The Secret to Winning Unsolicited Sponsors for Your Event or Project (Case Study: Global Konsult Group’s UMB Pageant in Cotonou)

Background

GKG is a Cotonou, Benin Republic based multidisciplinary company that supports start-ups and existing businesses with a variety of useful solutions. The CEO, NANA Arnold is also a director of the English arm of a 22 year old private university in Benin Republic – UPIB (see www.upib-eng.com).

Nana, as most people call him is a bilingual Cameroonian who is married to a Nigerian lady, with kids, and who has lived and worked in Cotonou for over six years now. A practising legal consultant, who obtained his first degree from a Cameroonian University, he nurses an enduring passion for developing youthful talent wherever he goes.

That passion led him to start-up the UMB in 2014, and from that small beginning it is rapidly growing into an Oak of sorts, that’s attracting lots of positive attention for the GKG brand, to the extent that they are being courted actively, by sponsors and prospective partners of all kinds both locally and internationally.

This year his company will host the 2nd edition of their University pageant.

For the maiden edition, they sent out MANY letters to potential sponsors. Most never responded.

A few sniffed but did not bite. None signed up.
Yet by the time the Grand Finale held in November 2014, at Palais De Congress in Cotonou, one sponsor – a multinational Telecoms company – showed up with promotional items and gifts for the winners.

This year, that multinational has come on board as a sponsor (without being asked). Some other companies have also done same. Plus, ONE group of companies signed an MOU with GKG.

This is all happening within a year of their start-up.Yet, when they began, things did not look as rosy as they do now! Indeed, it would not be wrong to say they looked, for most part up till the end, rather discouraging.

Don’t Let Charlatans Mislead You (Hint: Seek Out Authentically Successful Persons to Learn From)!

Today I took my 9 year old daughter and her 3 older brothers to attend a “mentorship conference” for CEOs where they got to hear some great minds share TRUE stories about success and how failure HELPS to achieve it. I’ll share details in my Monday newsletter to help aspiring/existing CEOs.

Like I tell people, this website – www.tayosolagbade.com – is NOT an ego trip.

It is based on authentic REAL world experiences. If you have doubts about the accuracy or reliability of ANYTHING you see here, ask me directly to request clarification. Jumping to uninformed conclusions can deny you MAJOR access to life changing information and education.

Ask me. Challenge Me. Check with someone else you think may also KNOW, and then use what you learn to take me up on ANYTHING I say here.

Jose Mourinho, who is today a renowned coaching success in international club soccer, did not play professional football prior to becoming a coach.

Unlike the Chelsea coach, I actually studied what I am engaged in – Agricultural Extension services – for five years at the University of Ibadan – graduating top of my class with a 2nd Class Upper division honors( 5.9 Cumulative Grade Point Average).

During the last three years of my stay on campus, I was a member of the SFRF, and in my final year served as supplies coordinator of that body. What I learnt from being in that group – comprising 98% Veterinary Medicine students – about livestock farming, many people would spend five years studying animal husbandry and still not know!

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING: Be Proficient In Your Preferred Language*

Imagine you were walking down the road and a haggard looking beggar, called out to you in PERFECTLY SPOKEN ENGLISH. Imagine s/he went on to state his/her request articulately, and in the manner of a person of fine education. Wouldn’t that make you hear him/her out? Or possibly do more?

In truth, most people would likely answer “YES” to my question. At the very least, even if you choose not to stop, there’s a good chance you’ll mention THAT beggar to the next “sane” person you meet.

That could be your friend, spouse or associate. It’s not something one sees everyday. It would STICK to your memory!

Dale Carnegie once wrote that a person’s diction can be his/her “passport into the best business circles“. He told the story of a man who secured a well paying job, with the help of a wealthy business owner, within 24 hours of speaking with the latter, even though he had walked in dressed like a tramp!

Carnegie’s “conclusion” could be rephrased for more “completeness” as follows:

“Your diction can be your passport to the best SOCIAL circles”.

I say this because my experiences and observations indicate that people love to listen to, and be associated with, a person who has a good command of their accepted or recognized language of communication.

And I must point out here, that what I’m saying is NOT limited to the use of the English language. 

In Nigeria for instance, some radio, TV, print and other news media owners value hiring journalists, proficient in certain widely spoken local languages, such as Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa etc.

So, when there is a need to get valuable news stories from locals that are unable to express themselves in English, journalists with the ability to competently communicate with such “sources” tend to get better quality news reports in.

Over time, they get noticed by the BOSS …especially in crisis periods, when there is pressure on the media house to churn out latest updates ahead of competitors (Think Boko Haram terror bombings or kidnappings etc).If they continue to deliver, such individuals find themselves getting more face-time with those who matter. And their names get known. Their careers sky rocket.

In reality, sometimes, the guy who becomes the “local champion” – as described above – may not necessarily be “expert” at speaking the language.

S/he might just be the MOST (or the ONLY person) proficient or competent in the use of that language in the organization.As a result the responsibility for doing the “talking” naturally falls on him. Whoever is the formal “leader” in that social situation automatically has to reckon with this individual.

In other words. s/he gets noticed by the decision makers…AND the rest becomes history!

Lesson to Take Away: How good is your command of the language you have to use an expert in your chosen field?

Not just how well you speak it, but also in terms of how well you can read, and write in it (e.g. use of grammar and tenses etc), as well as how well you COMPREHEND it when others speak it to you?

If you’re not sure, get someone you trust to give you an objective assessment.

To help my clients, who I’m supporting to use Web Marketing Systems I develop for them, I’ve resolved to begin offering subtle (corrective) pointers and tips in this regard.

When a meeting planner looking to hire an expert-speaker reads an article riddled with errors of all kinds, it can throw him/her off so much that s/he loses the initial interest in the expert that wrote it. Especially if that expert’s demonstrated ability to use the language is an important criterion used by the meeting planner to invite speakers or hire experts.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve also put up writing with such errors. So, it’s not like I’m trying to claim perfection here.

However, making many such errors is farm from being the norm for me. Success is said to be a matter of percentages. We all make mistakes, and no one is perfect, but we all need to strive for perfection!

I do so: Everyday. Starting today. I’m re-inventing myself in this regard as well, so I can do even better!

To get taken seriously, by potential clients, you want to do the same: Make serious, and consistent effort to minimize errors anytime you SPEAK. Or when you WRITE – especially formally e.g. on your website, blog, even Facebook. Read through AFTER you’ve published and if you notice errors, correct them. Someone may have seen the error(s), but the next person will NOT, and s/he will at least go away with a better impression of you!

Yesterday (Mon 6th April 2015), I DELIBERATELY did NOT publish what would have been Issue No. 188 of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter (view last week’s issue here) …because I decided to RE-INVENT myself in celebration of 2 years since I  relocated to Benin Republic on 1st April 2013.

As a Performance Improvement Specialist, I believe in actively pursuing Continuous Improvement in EVERY area of endeavour I am engaged in.

The result of that exercise is that I now have 2 newsletters, instead of one, with a major modification in the nature of content and offers I will be making to my readers.

Newsletter No. 1: The Speaking/Web Marketing IDEAS Newsletter

Next Monday, 13th April 2013 (AFTER Nigeria’s Governorship Elections are over), the original Speaking IDEAS newsletter will return with NAME – and CONTENT – CHANGES.

When I launched the Speaking IDEAS newsletter, in 2011, it was to promote speaker mentoring products and services offered by Burt Dubin, who I represent as Sole Agent across Africa.

Over the years, I have modified my approach and strategy based on what I observed to be the trends in subscriptions and feedback from readers.

Yes, “Google” became a verb a long time ago. It means typing your name in Google.com and clicking SEARCH to see what results are returned. My apologies, if you knew this already, but my experiences have taught me that so many people still do not.

If you have never Googled your name before, try it NOW. Do you like what you see in the results? I certainly hope so.

As a business owner, you are an extension of your company/brand. In today’s world, most people will readily settle for Google (to learn more), after meeting, hearing or reading about you for the first time. You need to make sure they see MORE of the kind of things that will present you the way you want.

One survey I read said over 80% of net users depend on Google.com to find information. The way I see it (based on the Pareto principle), if you get yourself presented right in Google, you’re likely to have little to worry about from all the other engines!

WHY YOU MAY WANT TO CONTROL WHAT GOOGLE SAYS ABOUT YOU: READ THIS STORY

Recently, I had some interaction with a gentleman who functions as a professional public speaker – and also coaches others to do the same, right here in Nigeria. In the course of studying a report he made available online, I was so impressed that I decided to “Google” his name and see what else there was to know about him Incidentally, I had no viable alternative to Google, since he only supplied a mobile phone number in the PDF report, for some strange reason!

Guess what happened?

The first results page Google pulled up, had over 5 different individuals bearing the same first name and surname as my MAN!

But what really made it bad – for him – was that one particular namesake, who featured more often in the results than others, came NO. 1 – It was a BBC website report that described him as having been “busted” for high profile fraud (the one we call 419) in a famous overseas city.

And that was what got me and this public speaker talking. He admitted to me that he had always known of his criminal “namesake”, but had felt that except he changed his name, there was more or less nothing he could do about it.

Then I told him a Hotel CEO was able to get rid of a greatly embarrassing web based result (a malicious article written about HIM, by someone using a phony name, and published on certain naughty blogs) that kept popping up in Google, whenever his name was used.

He asked how? I told him a Web Marketing System (WMS) was developed and implemented for him. It did (and does) NOT work overnight, but it gets the job done – making stuff you put out, and that others generate in syndicating or referring to your stuff, come up AHEAD of any others.

I also told him the story of another CEO (in medical practice) who was able to leverage a Web Marketing System to define and differentiate himself online from a (this time GOOD) namesake, who is a fairly well known preacher in Nigeria.

Initially, each time this CEO’s name was Googled (and he confirmed people often told him so), this other preacher person dominated the results. This created problems for prospective patients, for instance, who could not understand why he was depicted as a preacher, and there was no reference to his medical practice.

Following implementation of a web marketing system for his business, Googling his name NOW ensures he dominates the results that come up on the first page.

It goes without saying, of course, that things may not necessarily happen in such a straightforward manner for each person. What is certain, however, is that with diligent effort and competent know-how, the desired results can be achieved.

So, What Is A Web Marketing System(WMS) & How Can You Get Yours?

A Web Marketing System is a self-sustaining combination of web based marketing strategies and resources designed to complement your OFFLINE efforts, and make more of those who need your products/services come to you on their own – even if you do not know you and you did not place a paid advert.

A WMS will comprise at the very least, the following 3 basic components:

1. A Regularly Published Website Newsletter(s)

2. A Value Adding Articles Marketing Campaign

3. Diligent Social Media (especially Facebook) Marketing Online using material from 1 and 2.

You can develop and implement 1 to 3 by yourself.

You Really Do NOT Need a Website: What You Need Instead is a Web Marketing System (WMS)

I’m sure that title GRABBED your attention. That’s why I used it – and I AM serious: You really do NOT need a website. What you need instead is a Web Marketing System(WMS). You see, a WMS can help you establish a timeless marketing Effective Online Presence (EOP) that will do the following for YOU:

a). Makes visitors contact you via the channels you create (e.g. contact forms and other platforms etc)

b). Makes potential customers – fitting your target audience profile – find you via search engines (i.e. your search engine visibility increases – your website, youtube channel, facebook/twitter pages, Google+ etc)

c). Make visitors become subscribers to your online newsletter.

d). Give your company superior leverage in the minds of potential customers via Power Positioning™. By this I refer to the way you can make your website RESPONSE GENERATING via the web marketing systems that cause you to have dramatic increase in name recognition – both offline and online.

I have had clients argue with me about this as I started out working on their existing websites to incorporate a custom web marketing system for them.

That YOU are the expert in your field is NOT in doubt. However, unavoidable changes in the demographics of potential customers in your market over time, will likely make it imperative that you adopt a web marketing SYSTEM and not just a website.

3. The most important goal of a website is to make people contact you – that is to generate potential sales leads.

For it to do that, you need to put up NOT JUST your product/service information, but also offer potentially USEFUL CONTENT through a variety of channels, that entices the visitors while on your website to take action to do business with you.

4. Not everyone will be ready to buy when they visit your website!

Indeed we know that rarely do people buy anything on first contact with the seller online. So, ensuring you can STAY in touch with people who come to your site, will enable you persuade them to buy – over time.

Here’s ONE tangible benefit to be had:

Would it not be better if over a period of months, you build a database of email subscribers to whom you can ALWAYS send email notices via your website newsletter about your new products and services? If you say YES, then it follows that you must be prepared to let your website incorporate functionalities that will transform it into a web marketing system for you – such as conspicuously displayed newsletter signup forms etc.

I will end by saying that your website design constitutes less than 20% of what makes up your web marketing system.

Things like newsletter marketing, articles marketing, search engine optimization are MORE crucial in importance for the success of your site.

You will need to accept this reality, if you want your website to pay for itself (recall you WILL be paying money ANNUALLY to renew its hosting).

You Cannot Beat Competitors If You Keep Doing The SAME Things They Do!

Business marketing is more competitive today than ever before! Except you are a monopoly or you enjoy exclusive distribution/sales rights, you WILL have to compete DAILY with others who do what you do for every NAIRA (or DOLLAR) the customer wishes to spend.

A question I believe every business owner should ask him/herself is:

Would it be reasonable to expect customers to choose to buy from you, when NOTHING significantly differentiates you – in a positive sense that is – from competitors who offer similar products and services?

I doubt any CEO will say “YES”!

 

Let me use an analogy to drive this point home.

Think, for instance, about why YOU as a person typically choose to buy groceries from a particular store, and not another one. Even when the price and quality are the same, the fact that you get more courteous and personalised service from the former, could make you prefer to keep going back there. AND you would even refer others to the same place!

Which is exactly the point I am making. Most buyers, if given a good reason, will feel drawn to buy from you instead of another seller/provider.

As a business owner, becoming the preferred choice of potential customers will naturally appeal to you. But you are NOT likely to achieve that desirable goal if you keep doing the same things your competitors (and/or others in your industry) are doing – especially in terms of marketing and advertising.

Discounts, promos and other incentive programs are not bad, but it is only when creatively combined with unique offers that potential customers find useful, (and which competitors find hard to duplicate), that you GAIN a competitive advantage – leading to increased sales leads!

The unique offer I refer to will be one that gives buyers in the market place a COMPELLING reason to buy from you, even when your price is higher than that of other sellers!

Without the above, most of your marketing/advertising will amount to calculated gambling with limited chance of yielding sustainable results.

HOW TO MAKE YOURSELF PREFERRED BY CUSTOMERS

One proven way to build the needed credibility that will make buyers prefer you, is for you to embark on diligent provision of accurate and HELPFUL information that not only empowers potential buyers to make better informed buying decisions, but also simultaneously demonstrates you have the expertise to facilitate that process, should they choose to buy from you.

It’s so obvious, that I often wonder why many business owners out here still do not see it! Once people come to ASSOCIATE your name and/or that of your company with such helpful information and other resources you provide, they are more likely to think of you when eventually they have a need related to your products/services offer.

TRUST is the basis on which most successful business transactions take place. The strategy described above enables you get that trust, and keep it for as long as possible.

To get started using this strategy, simply decide on the channel(s) you will use to reach out to potential buyers, with your HELPFUL information. Communication media like print newspapers, TV and radio readily come to mind and are often preferred by most people.

The truth is however that compared to a “web marketing system”, those traditional channels are not only expensive, but they also have much shorter shelf-lives.

A Web Marketing system includes Article Marketing, Newsletter marketing, Branded Face book Page Marketing, Branded Information Products Marketing, Search engine optimisation and other components.

The above – when used properly – can combine to help you achieve your goal of getting name/brand credibility. The best part is you do NOT have to part with money to make use of them – especially at the start. All you need is an Internet Connection! So, I urge you to try them before spending your hard earned money on more expensive alternatives. (Googling each of the aforementioned phrases could yield some ideas – but I also offer URLs to some of my own further down.)

Note that if you set up your web marketing system FIRST, any other communication channels (TV etc) you choose to adopt for promoting your business, will benefit. This is because your listeners, readers or viewers can be referred to your online system, increasing your chances of having those of them who go there, become customers!

A Massive Blind Spot That’s Making Some Facebook Biz Page Owners Miss Getting NEW Fans

For anyone to SEARCH for and find your Facebook fan page, or indeed your personal profile on Facebook s/he MUST be logged into Facebook. This implies that s/he would ALREADY have a Facebook account. And that’s the BLIND SPOT – not everyone has a Facebook account – yet, especially in Nigeria. Compared to our adoption of Yahoo! and Hotmail email accounts, our use of Facebook is still relatively LOW.

Yet, most Nigerian businesses want to appeal to a large segment of society.

Is there not a danger that in the process of assuming that people can find you on Facebook by simply searching in it, you will routinely “lose” out on an opportunity to get MORE people to visit your Facebook business page?

The answer is a BIG, FAT YES.

And that’s why the lively hosts of Supersport’s 2010 South African World Cup magazine show “Harambee” routinely announce their Facebook page URL on air. Coming home, some Nigerian corporate organisations and businesses have also adopted a custom Facebook fan page username/URL to increase brand/name recognition, as well as make themselves easier to find on Facebook – especially for members of their target audience who are NOT yet converts.

The purpose of marketing is to boost awareness about you and/or your brand. You therefore need to make it easy for people who develop “interest”, to easily and quickly gain access to resources that will enable them learn MORE about you, without getting “lost” in their search for those details.

This is why it is advisable that you get yourself a “A Custom Facebook URL For Your Brand Name”. The foregoing phrase is the title of one of many articles freely available on the net that give you step-by-step guidance to create your own custom Facebook URL within a few minutes.

The steps to create your own custom username are as follows:

1. Login to your Facebook account

2. Type “http://facebook.com/username” into in your browser URL entry bar

3. You will be taken to a page with radio button options next to suggested usernames for your profile. I found it made sense to choose the one that used my first name separated from my surname with a dot.

4. Follow the instructions provided to SET the username you have chosen.

5. If you have a Facebook page attached to that profile, you will also want to set a custom username for it. Usually, a “Create a custom username for your Facebook page” link will appear below the prompt that confirms your custom profile username has been created.

6. If you do not see such a prompt, type the name of your Facebook page in the Facebook search bar and press ENTER. The icon for your page should appear before you finish typing the name – so click on it, to get taken to the page.

7. If the icon does not appear before you finish typing (be sure to check your spelling is correct), simply press ENTER and then click on the correct link/image in the Facebook search results that are returned.

8. You will be taken to a page with a drop down menu holding the names of any pages you have under your profile. Choose the name you want to set a username for, and follow the instructions provided to check availability and ultimately set it.

Summary: It’s about leveraging your name/brand effectively in all media you choose to use online. Don’t just let Facebook create an unwieldy, long and difficult-to-remember URL for your profile or business page. Make it easy for interested persons, potential customers, as well as existing clients, and even friends and relatives to find you on Facebook. Get yourself a custom Facebook URL today!

UPDATE: Since writing the above article in 2010, I have gone on to create custom URLs based on my domain name, leading to my Facebook (www.tayosolagbade.com/fbk) and Twitter (www.tayosolagbade.com/twit) pages.

And I do the same for EVERY client I develop a Web Marketing System for. This has proven to be even better for achieving the needed marketing impact of impressing one’s online presence in the minds of the target audience.

By making it possible to type a special URL based on your domain name, to reach your social media (and other channels), you effectively make it easier for people to REMEMBER how to get there.

…and that can translate to increased and sustained visits, with greater chances of sales leads etc!

 

 

Does Your Website JUSTIFY the Money You Spend?

[NB: This article was first published online on June 25, 2009] I have decided to focus more attention on helping business owners develop and implement low cost web marketing systems and strategies that will increase their marketing mileage, while lowering their expenses.

But in doing this, I have noticed the following trend amongst many Nigerian business owners and decision makers. Please note that those I refer to here are people whose businesses lend themselves naturally to marketing via the web right here in Nigeria.

1. Denial:

Many are rather defensive when approached about using a website or adopting web marketing adapted for the Nigerian environment. They often say they don’t need either, or that “Nigerians’ don’t use the Internet” to the extent that makes it worth investing in marketing to them through that medium.

I say, even if that were true (which it is NOT), you would be better off being one of the first to use web marketing to promote your products/services to Nigerians, since that would make you stand out, and get you noticed. Isn’t marketing ultimately about “creating awareness” about what you offer, at least in the initial stages?

It’s a pity some Nigerians feel they must be able to physically “touch” what they invest in for business!

2. Lack of Understanding:

Some do not understand, and refuse to be bothered. They can afford to be like this, because their competitors are either the same or like those in 1. above.

But here’s the danger: One day, one or more of those not bothered today, will suddenly “discover” the power of marketing intelligently to Nigerians via the web, right here in Nigeria, and begin to use it – gaining a competitive edge, and possibly driving the rest under.

What I find most amusing is that many of these decision makers usually readily say they have websites, and that it is working for them.

But you never see their web addresses displayed anywhere on their company premises, or even signs. In many cases, they even place adverts on radio/TV and even newspapers without including the URL of the website they spend money to keep online annually!

Believe me, I do not exaggerate. I once found myself having to ask a client why he had left out his website address from a – far from being cheap – quarter page advert he had placed in a national daily!!

In essence, I am saying “Your Website Needs To JUSTIFY The Money You Spend” on it. Basically there are two ways to confirm if it does. You will check to see if it either (a). Saves you money/time or (b). Helps you make more sales or – even better – if it does both.

Now, to get your site to do the above, you need to adopt intelligent website marketing systems.

Below I provide two examples of businesses that would benefit greatly from active use of intelligent website marketing systems:

Example 1: Bookshops in Nigeria

…are perfect candidates not just for website ownership, but more importantly for intelligent web marketing. If you own or run one and do not use web marketing to complement your offline marketing, here in Nigeria, YOU ARE LOSING GREAT potential customers, and SPENDING MORE THAT you need to.

Think about it for a minute: All those books, videos, tapes by great authors, with wonderful messages on various powerful subjects of interest.

If you were to do a publication that reviewed different book titles periodically to a list of opt-in subscribers, you would over time build interest in some of them, to call in and place orders.

Call me and I will tell you how you can go about it

Example 2: Estate/Properties Management

Any decision maker in a company engaged in sale and management of properties, especially where so many companies compete, NEEDS to look for NEW, and unique ways to separate hers from the crowd.

Think about it. These days, most of these companies use similar looking flyers, banners, bill boards, cars, and even (for those who bother) websites!

Yet EACH one wants busy potential customers (with little time to “explore” every “good” offer in making up their minds) to see it as offering better value than the others.

The truth is most customers simply go with their instincts – or a friend’s suggestion. However, if they had the opportunity to get MORE detail about what each company is about, what it offers etc, over a period of time, they could end up choosing a different company!

Such details could be obtained via subscription for instance, to a website newsletter; and/or a PDF report on “Choosing the Right Home or Property”; and/or an electronic course on “How To Value Property” etc.

Any company that offers the above, and actively uses intelligent web marketing to promote them to win new customers, greatly increases its chances of getting found by new customers who will ultimately take action to do business with it.

Summary

Your business can spend LESS than it currently does on marketing, if you adopt intelligent web marketing systems of the type I advocate.

There is a WAY to make this happen. It’s not just about writing something and sending it out. And it’s not about getting a super graphic web designer to put all the flash designs and animations in the world on your website!

You NEED the know-how to do it right, and make it work.

Like I tell a lot of people, Google, in my opinion is the ugliest (or “blandest”) site on the net. Yet, it makes billions of dollars through people who keep going back to it – and it’s not because they get to see fancy graphics on the site! Get it?
