1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING: Why “Made-in-Africa” Experts-Who-Speak Are Hard to Find (Hint: And Why YOU Should Become ONE!)

Public Speaking is a powerful weapon for achieving high impact business marketing promotion. Compared to conventional marketing, it yields multiple benefits in terms of product sales, name recognition, brand building and more.

So why don’t MORE business owners in Africa use it?

A few years back, I read an article by a female IT professional who is an internationally recognized speaker from Africa…but whose business is based in the UK.

She was complaining about what she called a dearth of “Made-in-Africa” speakers.

I agree with her.

It is HARD to find experts-who-speak across Africa – at least not like you have them in other climes in all of the SAME fields we practice here!

IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m talking now about the experts-who-speak and NOT  people who only function as professional “motivational speakers”.

We have fashion designers, we have lawyers, and we have doctors, restaurant owners, financial consultants, real estate professionals, farm business owners, IT professionals and many others in various fields.

Some are engaged in provision of services, others retail or wholesale products and some are manufacturers.

They can ALL use public speaking as a business marketing tool IF they know how!

But don’t get me wrong now. There’s nothing wrong with being a motivational speaker.

I’m just saying that this piece is more about people who are hands-on professionals (i.e. practicing professionals in their various fields) adopting public speaking to find more clients and/or earn more income.

My argument is that we need more of the skilled professionals like those mentioned above, to get into the business of public speaking.

That way they can kill two birds with one stone:  they market themselves and at the same time they educate people and add value to them.

Professionals are typically people who are already equipped with experiences and knowledge that can add value to the lives of others in their areas of expertise.

Therefore when they deliver talks or lectures based on what they know, they can help their audience gain improved knowledge and insights to do what they do better.

Doing public speaking WILL give a professional MORE credibility.

It is for this reason that public speaking is a powerful tool that can be used anywhere in the world. Indeed, it has been used – for decades – across the world as a zero cost or very low cost promotional strategy.

For some strange reason not much of that (i.e. experts-who-speak) is happening in Africa.

It is my considered opinion that the main reason for the above is that many independent professionals and business owners are scared of speaking before a formal audience (even when it is ONE person they face), and they need help.

That’s why many of them are NOT very comfortable with the Sales & Marketing that needs to be done to ATTRACT a continuous stream of new buyers or clients for the solutions they offer.

To overcome that problem, they hire employees and push them out to do the marketing for them. Problem is very often those ones get little or no structured guidance on what to do/how, to boost their chances of success.

I am on a mission to help “experts” that are willing break that mental barrier and move to the next level in the productivity as business persons.
