You Cannot Sell Web Marketing as a Commodity (Hint: Suggestions to SEO Service “Sales Persons” and Those Who Buy From Them)

[Update – 5th March 2016 at 19:28: Click here to listen a short audio recording I did on this subject BEFORE I wrote this article]

The views I express in this piece may rub some hard core SEO practitioners the wrong way. However, I urge you to keep an open mind as you read, so as to appreciate the often missed perspective I offer.

A few days ago, I got a call from a young lady who boldly announced the name of the company she worked for, and then asked:

“Are you Tayo Solagbade, the owner of thefarmceo.net?”

When I replied in the affirmative, she said “We can get thefarmceo.net to appear in the number one spot on Google. What do you think about that?”

At this point, I understood where she was headed with her line of questioning, and sighed as I realized the nuisance I’d endured for years via email, from so called SEO providers had come to me via yet another channel.

I proceeded to calmly and politely explain to her that thefarmceo.net was one of 5 domains I owned, and that I had no need to get it to appear in number one spot on Google.

I explained further that I did not do SEO in the conventional sense she proposed, where one aimed to appear on number one, for a fee. Instead I use(d) a zero cost Web Marketing System to achieve the search engine visibility I needed (via multiple sales pages indexed) , in a manner that brought me a regular stream of high quality prospects via search engine queries.

She asked some more questions, in a way that indicated she was trying to wrap her mind around the unusual point I was making. How come I did not do SEO?

I replied that I did some basic SEO, but that I focused more of my efforts on using my Web Marketing System to get noticed in a favourable way by the engines and my target audience. For instance, I told her thefarmceo.net, for me, does not need to appear in Google’s SERP at number one, because I use it mainly as a forwarder to a sub domain on my flagship website i.e. www.iff.tayosolagbade.com. I therefore place greater priority in getting TayoSolagbade.com top visibility in search engines results pages.

At that point I heard a click, and the line went dead. She was gone.

Whether she’d cut the call, or had run out of airtime, I had no idea. One thing was certain though: she would not be calling back, because all I’d said clearly indicated I would NOT be interested in buying the “commodity” of number one position in Google for a fee, that she wanted to sell.

It is my considered opinion, that outside standard SEO that most website owners know/do, the smartest, most effective way to attract attention from potential buyers online, is intelligent creation and propagation of useful, value adding and interesting content, on a regular basis.

I believe many supposed SEO service providers focus on selling commodities instead of solutions. That often serves them, with little or no benefit to clients.

For those who still don’t get it, here’s why an offer of that kind should NOT win you over easily:

1. Getting into number one can be achieved, depending on a variety of factors.

But that has to be done within a defined context relevant to your unique needs. Since they come telling you they can do it without even knowing what you’re about, how can you be sure they’ll make it happen in a way that will attract the right kind of people, you need to buy from you?

Getting into number one MUST be a means to an end YOU want to achieve.

If you get into number one for irrelevant search strings, you’ll make little or no sales. And if you get into number one for the wrong reasons, or you get into number one in the wrong “niche”…then you’re on a wild goose chase!

Those are the fine details these “vendors” never tell most uninformed clients (Sometimes I suspect even they (the SEO “vendors” – as I like to think of this breed – do NOT know those details themselves!)

They simply play the trick of massaging people’s egos.

Showing up on Google’s number 1 placing becomes a bragging right they encourage the client to aim for. The client is made to forget that THAT appearance is supposed to translate to quality sales leads can result in actual buying transactions taking place.

2. Staying at number one in the manner they propose will require that YOU pay THEM money to keep it so

It becomes a recurrent expenditure, once they lock you in. I say your money will be better spent most times!

There are website owners caught in this trap now, paying to stay in their so called number one placing, even though their leads generations is showing no significant improvement.

3. Web marketing when done right, can deliver timeless returns on your investment.

A person who comes offering to get you into number one, without asking for information to evaluate what your brand is about, does NOT care about you.

S/he is hunting for money.

Choosing the right expert, and paying him/her to handle your SEO can yield good results. However, it can be hard to find experts with integrity, and competence, who will not be a bit pricey.

So, when you get offers of quick-fix SEO solutions, at “low prices” consider such offers with a big spoon of salt.

4. One more thing. I don’t know if I’m the only one who has noticed this…

When I was trying to reinvent my website marketing i.e. when traffic was close to nil, and I was starting this blog in 2012, I got few offers from these SEO guys.

But as soon as things began moving up for me traffic wise, especially from Google and You tube, in late 2013. When I’d built up some critical mass of blog posts, I suddenly started getting a rash of almost daily email offers to help me get more traffic and page 1 SERP placings!

That’s like offering me medication for an ailment I already cured myself of!

Apart from a few articles (like the one here and this one here) I’ve ignored them for the most part – until this phone call incident from a few days ago. The former link leads to an article titled “Open Letter To Intending SEO Service Providers – From Tayo Solagbade of the SD Nuggets Blog” in which I PREDICTED that I would succeed with my web marketing WITHOUT using their services, or adopting their methods.

I’ve since been vindicated many times over – including the time my domain got poached and I rebuilt my brand to even greater search engine relevance on a brand new domain less than 6 months! (Read A Proven Strategy to Find Profitable Buyers Regardless of Your Domain Name)

Here’s one of several analogies I use to drive home my point about the power of original and useful content in web marketing

Imagine putting up a (never-before-seen) page with a link to watch a video showing Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi trading tackles in a secret one-on-one match up, to see who could score more goals against the other, on a web page with ZERO SEO done to it!!!

I’m sure you’ll agree with me that THAT video will chalk up a massive number of views from soccer enthusiasts in no time – regardless of what platform the page owner chooses to announce it from.

Why?

Because the target audience, who are die hard soccer lovers, would watch and then tell one another, and possibly keep coming back to watch.

In the process, Google and other search engine robots would follow the “traffic” of visitors to that page and the video, and it would climb right into page 1 of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). And it would begin trending, then more people would get to know about it, and the cycle would continue.

We all know this is what happens. And that’s why I believe sometimes we go overboard in the way we talk about SEO.

Having said that, some highly competitive markets do require extra and more sophisticated SEO efforts to gain the slightest advantage.

However, those tend to be in the minority. Especially in my part of the world. The degree of needs sophistication regarding web marketing is much lower in Africa, compared to what obtains in developed societies.

A large majority of website owners out here are not so technical minded.

My experiences and observations also indicate that few are willing, talk less able, to pay competent hands to to do it for them. And that’s if any worthwhile returns – measurable and sustainable – can be had.

Unless it’s not too pricey and a one-off expense (both not likely) most of them would balk at doing it.

For me, as far as today’s web marketing goes, my experiences tell me once you know the demographics of those you want to attract, the rest is easy.

You would begin by doing
the standard SEO stuff e.g. add keywords, title and description tags to articles, images plus submit your domain to directories and search engines.

You would also follow key Google webmaster tools recommendations. Setup profiles on Google plus, You tube, and other social media platforms you consider relevant – being sure to use RSS feeds and URLs to link the aforementioned with your website and blog.

Such standard steps generally suffice.

Next you would focus on churning out useful and interesting information via
as many channels and in as many formats as possible, to meet your target audience’s needs

As you do that – and continue to do so – simply watch Google’s fair play algorithms do their magic in your favour. Your webmaster tools account would offer more insights into analyzing your performance, and you could use that to improve your efforts.

Apart from attracting a larger number of potential buyers to you, this approach also ensures they are more profitable as well!

Unfortunately, Africans in general, and Nigerians in particular still need to learn to NOT be so
egotistical and negatively competitive in both business as well as personal life.

Our way of life too often encourages people to think and act from Win-Lose (instead
of Win-Win) perspectives in relating with one another.

As a result, trust is a stranger amongst us, as is the true spirit of excellence
that thrives where negative competition is absent or minimal.

The above is why we often find ourselves looking to others from Europe and America
to help us develop, since our best people often find it hard to come – and stay –
together in lasting collaboration to make desired results happen.

In this field of Web Marketing for instance, this problem is one that I have
pointed out many times.

It is why too many web development practitioners in these parts still continue
selling web marketing to clients as a “commodity” with a shelf life, when in fact it
needs to be delivered as a self-sustaining “solution” that is timeless in its
impact.

Since their clients don’t know better, they accept this inefficient and more
expensive approach until they can no longer afford it and/or the results no longer
justify the continued monetary investment.

These developers see a person preaching low to zero cost timeless marketing
strategies like me as a threat.

They believe I want to make them do more work for clients than
they are willing to. So, rather than reach out to learn from me, they begin to look
for ways to discredit me before clients who are often not savvy enough to see
through their antics.

And that’s why:

1. I offer web marketing educational resources for CEOs – to over time arm them with
insights to be more discerning in terms of what they accepts from providers –
including me!

2. Once in a while I also offer messages to other web development service providers
fitting the description given above, about the need to invest quality time to learn
better ways to serve clients improved results.

The pod cast I will publish on this blog tomorrow, offers content catering to both groups, that I believe they
will find to be a wake up call of sorts.

PII 003: Proven Web Marketing Ideas Your Travel and Tourism or Hospitality Business Needs

If you run a Travel and Tourism agency, or are in the hospitality (hotels, restaurants and bars) business, catering to travelers and tourists, the ideas I share below can help you achieve substantial and sustainable generation of quality sales leads at VERY low to zero cost.

As you read on, you’ll encounter a FREE instant download PDF “travel guide” (no signup needed), PLUS a Joint Venture proposal I’m making to help interested businesses.

I’ll start by saying, if you own (or are planning to acquire) a website for your business, the ideas I share in this piece (and another to follow tomorrow) can help you get the RESULTS you want at less cost, using less effort and in a sustainable manner too!

I recommend that you…

1. Conceive, Develop and Implement a Web Marketing Plan for your business towards generating more sales leads of potential clients.

2. In doing the above, consider creating a range of travel/information guides branded in YOUR company name (in both digital and print formats), that your company can use to build a following among people fitting your client profile. The guides/other publications would also be useful for reconnecting with past clients or customers so that they follow your activities with more interest, in addition to telling others about you.

In my experience, a custom Web Marketing System deployed in conjunction with Print On Demand (POD) publishing offers a very cost-effective avenue, to do the above, in a manner that generates sustainable zero cost sales leads for your business (apart from income you can earn if you decide to sell them!)

Visit this page (click here) to read details of what I mean by POD publishing and why I believe you can use it to transform your business marketing when intelligently integrated with a Smart WMS (Hint: More on WMS below).

NB: Note that my website URL was spontaneousdevelopment.com in 2005 when I put the revised version of the report online. That 9 year old URL became defunct in 2014, and was replaced by TayoSolagbade.com – which you’re on right now.

An Example You Can Use: Discovering South Africa [Downloadable PDF Travel Guide]

For instance, in 2003, I wrote an educational PDF guide (click here to download it – no signup needed) about tourism destinations in South Africa, using the contents from a bulky information package prepared by the South African Department of Trade and Industry(DTI).

Click to download - Tayo Solagbade's Performance Improvement IDEAS(PI Squared) Newsletter PII 003: Discovering South Africa [Downloadable PDF Travel Guide]

The DTI package came into my possession following an event hosted by the DTI in Abuja, at the time. I wrote it back then simply to “test” myself to see what I could come up with, in form of a potentially useful information product.

Travel is a passion I’ve always had, and creating that DTI document back then gave me lots of ideas. Over the years I’ve offered it as a download from my websites. But I’ve also taken action on some of my ideas to do more traveling, while seeking ways to document my experiences and observations.

My Joint Venture Offer to travel and tourism/hospitality companies across Africa

Today, I work as a Location Independent Multipreneur, currently traveling slowly across West Africa – but with my base in Benin Republic’s Cotonou.

One of my key objectives is to collaborate with interested organizations in the travel and tourism and/or hospitality industries (hotels, resorts etc) – or corporate entities in general – to produce guides on various subjects relevant to their target audiences.

For instance, local travel guides on specific destinations featuring brief history of the country/people in an area, pictures of historical landmarks, review of tourist attractions, recommended walks, listing of popular spots (i.e. place to see/be) etc.

Whatever other content the Joint Venture partner wants can be included. Where possible, I’ll research interesting anecdotes and other useful information to make readers see multiple reasons to want to OWN and keep (even give out) copies.

This partnership can be implemented locally or remotely. In other words, I do NOT even need to be locally or physically present in the same location as the Joint Venture partner to develop the agreed resources.

Today’s PC, Internet and Mobile technology makes it possible for me to get ALL the information and resources I need to create solutions of this kind for clients, without needing face to face meetings. I’ve worked like this for years.

Payment can be both monetary and in kind. Products/service barter is a method I have used for years to make it easy for clients/buyers to gain access to cost-effective solutions I offer.

For instance, I do A LOT of freelance ghostwriting for clients within and outside Africa (e.g. the UK), and in many cases, have had to work remotely, while on the move, using Skype, email and phone to communicate with an interview clients, to get their articles, white papers and digital as well as print books published.

I have a time-nurtured vision to help more African business owners learn how to use my methods to dramatically cut down their operating and marketing expenses, while at the same time boosting their marketing reach and impact.

Apart from work I do for clients, I also maintain a growing library of – multidisciplinary themed – information products (in both digital and print formats) available to a global paying audience, via my online store.

If my proposal of a Joint Venture partnership as outlined above interests you, click here to send me a message.

I believe you would greatly benefit from using the ideas I advocate in this pod cast in conjunction with POD publishing to create a SERIES of income generating Information Products (i.e. reports, books, audio/video products) that will also attract clients to your physical business.

Smart use of the strategies I advocate can help you earn more, beyond the income that accrues to you from direct sales in your physical business.

This strategy is one that enables me continue making sales even when offices are closed on public holidays.

It is my considered opinion that too many business owners limit themselves in terms of the channels through which they earn income.

For those who are willing, I offer FREE information and education, as well as formal support in various pocket-friendly ways, to help them achieve similar outcomes to mine – and even better.

PII 002: Deliver Promised Quality Consistently, and Buyers Will Feel No Need to Look for Alternatives

This week’s issue was inspired by Pius Adesanmi’s 2006 article titled “Ibo Made” republished on Facebook on Feb. 20, 2016 (click).

It was very articulate, and loaded with solid points. Definitely a good read.

However I refuse to let my patriotic zeal blind me to the root causes I’ve identified to contribute in no small way to the problem highlighted in Pius’ article:

Yes it’s true that many Nigerians tend to look down on “Ibo Made” products AND it is indeed true that our markets are flooded with substandard products imported from China – stifling local production…BUT is it (NOT) also true that some of “us” go to China to demand that imitations of original products be made to lower quality specifications for sale in Nigeria(?)

We’re not kids here!

The Chinese export worldwide.

We all know the high standards they have to meet for their products to get accepted for sale in markets like the USA and other developed societies. Let’s not delude ourselves.

Nigeria is NOT the only export destination Chinese manufacturers have.

So, if they’re sending substandard products to Nigeria, we have to ask ourselves why they are not able to do the same thing elsewhere.

FACT: They are not exporting similar quality to the USA!

I use America as a reference point for other developed countries, who have an established quality control system designed to protect their consumer population.

In the USA, any product that fails to meet the minimum specifications gets locked out. No amount of begging, lobbying or offers of settlement, will help.

Ask Nigerians who got products rejected for failing to meet the specs specified under the African Growth Opportunities Act (AGOA) program, and they will tell you.

No matter how badly, the USA wants to help other nations via trading, they will NOT lower their quality standards, endangering their consumers, to do so!

In Nigeria, even drugs used for medical purposes are sometimes imported without the proper checks, causing substandard versions or outright imitations to get in!

How is that even possible???

Considering the fact that majority of the importers of these items watered down Chinese made items are mostly our very own brethren, does that not amount to our shooting ourselves in the foot???

Word actually has it that many of our own people, involved in large scale imports, go abroad and instruct their suppliers to make substandard versions to lower costs, so they can reap higher margins when they sell them locally at normal prices!

Don’t ask me how they get through the country’s ports without this being discovered by the regulatory bodies that conduct required checks. Or maybe it’s discovered and they “settle” it among themselves.

What matters is that they Do get into the Nigerian markets regularly!

Another perspective: Among producers of made in Nigeria items, I see the absence of a DRIVE to deliver promised VALUE in a way that will make Nigerian buyers feel no need to look for “imported” alternatives

It’s a problem of the wrong mental attitude.

Now, in discussing this issue of the mental attitude of the Nigerian maker of products at any level, I refuse to focus on people in section or geographical region of Nigeria.

Like I’ve said in a previous post (click here to view) Nigeria can and should promote products creation from micro to SME and higher levels across the entire nation if s/he wants to see progress.

It makes no sense to create the impression that people from a certain region of the country are to engage in certain vocations to the exclusion of others.

We also need to provide technical/best practice education to those who choose to go this route so they appreciate the importance of producing to meet internationally accepted standards as a minimum requirement!

The truth is that right now, buying many made in Nigeria items (especially those with imported alternatives) can be like gambling with money.

Today it may end well for you, but some other day you end up feeling like you’ve been ripped off (I’m just being conservative here…it’s often not just a “feeling”).

It’s so hard to trust and believe in made in Nigeria products, when the makers themselves do no invest emotionally in their brands!

For instance, what happens when you take a bad product back to the maker or seller in Nigeria?

Quite often they refuse to replace or fix it, and will rarely offer a refund. The best you’re likely to get is an invitation to “add a little money” so they can sell you another one.

I was born and raised in Nigeria and have experienced/observed this with providers of products and services – both schooled and unschooled. People do business with a win-lose mentality most times.

If they can get money off you without giving you any product they’ll take the chance: And once your money ends up in their hands, getting them to pay you any more attention can prove quite difficult. Except you come to make an additional purchase, their after sales behavior can make you feel like you’re being a nuisance e.g. when you complain about faulty or bad product etc.

It’s hardly any different on the service provision front…

For instance, try getting your money paid for 1 year’s rent refunded by an estate agency in Nigeria after you discovered unacceptable defects contrary to what you were promised, and it will often take a serious tug of war!

Yet in Cotonou, just like my Beninese friends had always assured me was standard practice, last year, I got my money for an apartment I quit, handed back in full (less agreed expenses) within days in an amicable setting with the agent.

Same applies to buying products from markets in Benin Republic: The locals openly brag about the fact that they will never cheat their buyers.

Not once have I experienced the opposite.

[Don’t get me wrong. Issues do arise sometimes, but they are the exception NOT the norm!]

On one occasion a trader agreed to meet with me on Sunday, even though shops never open on that day, when I phoned to say the pair of Jeans he’d sold me on Saturday evening as they rushed to close shop, turned out to be too small.

That kind of mental attitude and behavior in response to an after sales request , inspires trust and confidence in the buyer’s mind. Little wonder that I’ve continued buying from that same trader since 2013!

People want to know they will get value for the money they pay you!

In many cases, many sellers in the Nigerian space are unable (unwilling) to invest the time and effort needed to inspire the trust and confidence needed to attract and retain buyers.

Most who behave in this manner make the excuse that they face too many challenges, do not have time, and/or are worried about clients/buyers exploiting them.

Much as I agree that some of those fears may be valid, the truth remains that they stand to benefit a whole lot if they changed their mental attitudes.

Once majority of Nigerian producers across all levels, begin to provide solutions that local buyers verify to deliver value for money, such buyers will ignore imported alternatives

This idea is not far fetched.

Think about our music industry, and how it was 2 to 3 decades ago.

The quality of musical works produced by most of our musicians at the time (exceptions being artists like Fela) did not match what came in from the foreign music scene. As a result, our corporate organizations kept importing foreign acts for shows while local ones saw little or nothing of the big money.

Today, our musicians have proven they can make music matching that from other climes – and now Nigerians are putting their monies into the pockets of local artistes at a dizzying rate without needing to be asked.

Visit any Nigerian party – locally or abroad – and you’ll have a hard time hearing a foreign artiste’s song enjoying major playing time – if it gets played at all!

Reason: The music this new generation of artistes makes gives good value for money!

The same thing needs to happen with our made in Nigeria products and services, otherwise we will continue to complain like we’re currently doing!!!

In case you wonder, I practice what I preach …I deliver promised quality and value to ALL who pay me!

I have done so through most of my adult life – starting when I was in paid employment in Guinness Nigeria. There I excelled by doing a whole lot more than I was paid for, leading to rapid career advancement to Senior Management positions, ahead of my peers in less than 6 years of joining Guinness Nigeria).

Since quitting to pursue my dream of being self employed from 2002, I’ve diligently defied failure and adversity at various points over the past decade, to establish myself as a trustworthy international provider of a unique range of customizable solutions.

Example: Yesterday afternoon, I made my kids sit in (as part of their Personal Achievement Coaching session) on the second day of a Skype phone call support session I had with a Farm CEO based in East Africa’s Tanzania country, who had purchased my Excel VB Ration Formulator software by paying via Western Union last month (January 2016).

By the time he’d told me what other issues he was having, I deduced that he needed to watch the 4 part step-by-step video tutorial I’d created 2 years ago, for an Algerian PhD student who’d reached out to me.

I knew the in depth explanations I provided in that video series were likely to address most – if not all of – those remaining issues he was having.

So, after the call ended, my kids watched me put together an email containing instructions for downloading my 4 part tutorial, which I then sent to the Farm CEO.

This evening, I was typing this message, I got the email shown in the screen shot below from him:

Tayo Solagbade's Performance Improvement IDEAS(PI Squared) Newsletter PII 002: Email screenshot - This evening, I was typing this message, I got the email shown in the screen shot below from my Farm CEO client based in Tanzania

You will agree with me, that the message in that email -as well as its tone – is indicative of a person who is happy with the results he has since.

As the above story illustrated, not only do I work hard to ensure my products perform as promised, I also work hard to support ALL buyers to make the most productive use of them – thus giving those who buy from me value for money they pay me.

My mental attitude makes me persistently seek to give more than I get from others. It makes me constantly go the extra mile to be a source of increase and improvement in the lives of others.

With the exception of a few insincere ones – those I connect with often acknowledge and appreciate me so much that we become friend and they tell others about me!

It goes without saying that doing the above can be VERY hard work, but that’s why we’re told it’s best to choose a vocation that you have a passion for.

That way, even when things get hard, you will NOT feel it’s more than you can take.

This is the habit that Nigerians who want to succeed using the philosophy I advocate in this article, need to adopt.

Without it, we are VERY unlikely to make tangible progress as a nation.

PS: Regarding the valid point made by Pius that the “Ibo Man”‘s buyers often expected him to have 2 versions of what he sold i.e. original and the fake (where original was considered the one imported from abroad and fake, the one made by “Ibo Man”)

I argue that YOU alone can determine how your buyers treat you.

If they want to call you a name you’re not, RESIST it, and confidently let them know how you prefer to be addressed and/or treated.

In doing my business both on and off the web, I have never been afraid to apply this principle, and anytime a client or buyer has been unwilling to deal with me on my stated terms, I’ve ALWAYS taken it as a good sign that s/he was NOT a good fit for me.

Over time, I’ve attracted to myself people fitting my definition of ideal clients/customers, with whom I ENJOY relationships of mutual respect and consideration today.

My advice to Pius’ “Ibo Man” and others who aspire to success in dealing with buyers, to adopt a similar assertive disposition, if they want to achieve sustainable long term success at what they do. Period.

Issue No. 001 goes LIVE on Monday 15th February 2016

What if you could print your own money – anytime you need it? What if you developed the ability to be able to make the money you need come into your possession, wherever and whenever the need arises.

Many who practise the christian religion, and who read the bible may be familiar with the phrase “God will meet you at the point of your need”.

I was brought up in a strong christian home, and bible study was an activity strictly enforced by my parents – my father especually. That foundation was what exposed me to a lot of the “promises” that christians “claim” and pronouce in their frequent affirmations.

As I grew up however, especually during my 3rd to final year in the University, I saw A LOT of things that made me change my views about religion.

By the time I graduated, I’d chosen to carry out without formally practising any religion. Instead, I devoted myself to reading books to gain a better understanding of the difference I sensed existed between religion and spirituality.

The latter appealed to me greatly. I instinctiely felt it would better equip me to connect with the creator, by living my life in accordance with the universal laws setup by Him to reward us on earth.

Today, over 2 decades later, I have become proficient in doing just that, and the results I achieve in my personal and work related activities provide ample proof that I regularly use to back up my claims.

Especially noteworthy has been my “romance” with lack of money, that became full blown within 2 short years after I quit the security of paid employment in Guinness Nigeria, at the height of my career success, to pursue my long standing dream of being self-employment.

All through the 7 years I’d been in that company, I’d enjoyed rapid career advancement opportunities, with exciting salary remuneration. Money had never been a problem for me. As a bachelor, I did not womanize or drink.

Instead I spent most of my money on furnishing my apartment and acquiring self-development resources e.g. books, home study video CDs, attending seminars, traveling to other states/countries etc.

Saving was NEVER something I gave any thought to. Since another month;s salary always came in to plug the gaping hole from the last month’s thoughtless spending blitz. I was a driven career man who spared no expense in achieving his personal goals.

The goals were worthwhile, but I did not go about achieving them with PRUDENCE, especially with regard to my spending.

That habit would later cost me A LOT in my early startup years, to the point that I exhausted the funds I left Guinness with, under a year. Then the REAL test began. And that test went on for MANY years filled with prolonged periods of delays, disappointments and setbacks.

I just could not earn money enough. For a long time, I struggled to make even the smallest amount. But I dug in, and read far and wide, as many books as I could. The question I kept asking myself was how I could set my brand up to ensure I always earned new money, to add to what I already had, so as to NEVER run out of cash again.

That become an obsession for me, and I studied ALL the experts who gave even the slightest indication that they knew how to do that. Eventually I discovered books on passive income – especially those by Robert Kiyosaki.

And later I read one in which he talked about being able to print your own money. Then it clicked. I understood that I could make it happen for myself. But I also realized I would have to do something VERY different from what I had been doing before – and from what others in my field were doing.

Today, I DO print my own money. And I am highly frugal in spending it, so as to get more done, with less.

In other words, I have setup a system that enables me earn money on a regular basis even when I do NOT have ANY client project in hand; even when I am sleeping; or out with my kids. And in 2016, I’m taking it to the next level already.

And I have also developed a system to ensure I do not waste it.

However, I do not want to stop there. I also realize, as I’ve said in recent articles, that the Creator wants me to start giving back by helping others succeed like I’m doing. And that’s why I’m launching this Performance Improvement IDEAS newsletter as a replacement for my Speaking/Web Marketing IDEAS newsletter.

Starting next week, in Issue 001 of this new Performance Improvement IDEAS (PI Squared) newsletter, I’ll be sharing insights to help you do what you do better, especially in your ability to excel at what you do, and earn more in the process.

For those of you who want to really excel, I WILL end every issue with a formal invitation to signup for access to my Password Protected Performance Improvement audio-visual home study library of resources.

There, you will gain access to audios/videos and ebooks in which I spell out how I print my own money, and how you can do the same.

See you next week!

About the Author 63

AUTHOR (Hope Agwulonu’s) NOTE

“Catfish farming is serious business. Not just by virtue of the lucrative returns it yields when done right, but also due to the heavy demands it places on the owner to keep it running that way (i.e. profitably!) for the long term. In my experience at Providence Farms Ltd, not everyone can make a success of catfish farming. Certain qualities are required which are more important than just having the money or required capital. This book highlights the key attributes you need to succeed in Catfish farming, and also discusses theoretical requirements in conjunction with practical considerations you will need to provide for, if you wish to successfully start and run your own profitable Catfish farming business, without stress, and with peace of mind.” – Hope Agwulonu, CEO, Progidence Farms Limited

Using LinkedIn – The Required Mindset For Best Results

Back in 2012, I had a discussion with a new member (let’s call him Nhoj) in one of the groups I belonged to on Linked In. He pointed out a worrying trend he had observed.

Specifically, he expressed concern that a rather unhealthy majority of people in that particular group were openly “hard selling” to other members, making little or no effort to add value by sharing ideas and contributing to discussions.

Nhoj had effectively spoken my mind. I told him so, adding that before joining the group he had complained about, I already belonged to three other groups on Linked In: One for speakers, another on speaker marketing, a third on book writing. Within days of joining the first group however, I discovered – just like he did – a massive difference in the quality of interaction amongst its members, compared to the other three.

It Is Important To FIRST Add Value, Build Relationships & Gain Trust

For instance in the other 3 groups I joined, aspiring and competent experts continually shared ideas and experiences/insight in a mutually rewarding – and collaborative – atmosphere. Very rarely was ANY hard selling done. There was so much sincerity. A win-win atmosphere.

In contrast, I found that the members of the group Nhoj referred to, relentlessly bombarded themselves with pushy sales messages, day in, day out. There was great activity (e.g. volume of posts), but very little quality interaction.

It was obvious that majority of the members of this group were “programmed” to TAKE from others. Most of them were just there to sell something.

Unfortunately, people with this kind of mindset are competitive minded about the WRONG things. The truth however, is that if they want to succeed, they’ll need to adopt a more collaborative approach in their interaction with other group members.

Being willing to collaborate with others does NOT mean you’re weak or less competent. Quite often, doing so can help you overcome limitations you’ve had while working alone.

Business persons who understand the ethical way to use social media, often appreciate the need to first of all establish a mutually beneficial (or as Nhoj put it – “symbiotic”) relationship with others, in order to make meaningful progress.

We have plenty of historical evidence that proves that it pays to follow this enlightened path. A high profile example is that of the late Steve Jobs, who partnered with competitors like Microsoft, to take the industry to the next level (as Richard Branson, another genius of similar temperament, recently recalled in one of his syndicated articles).

No One Says You Should NOT Try To Sell – Just Don’t “Hard Sell”!

Now, in case you’re reading this, and wondering, I’m NOT asking you to engage in some selfless altruistic gestures of helping others out, just for the sake of it. On the contrary, I actually believe it pays to focus on making money or building revenue through Linked In. After all, Guy Kawasaki, in a 2007 article, provided statistical proof, that Linked In was widely acknowledged to be the best no-nonsense medium to do just that, when compared to its peers.

The point I AM making, is that Linked In, being a professional networking environment, should NOT be abused by using it as a trading center (e.g. Google Trader), where people come with the primary motive of simply putting their stuff up for sale for others to buy.

In a place like Linked In, the culture is more refined – with emphasis on building trusting relationships via quality interactions.

There is emphasis on first offering useful value of some sort, with a twist or spin off that could yield potentially beneficial returns, to one or more of the participants.

Most important is the willingness of all members to contribute, with honesty and integrity, even when they KNOW there is a chance, that NO DIRECT benefits will accrue to them from doing so. In essence, I am saying each member should participate on Linked In, FIRST, with the intention of being of use/service to fellow members. In the course of doing so, s/he will become known, recognised and appreciated for the quality of his/her contributions. THAT would be one benefit.

Also in the process of serving in this manner, opportunities for showcasing what s/he offers, will present themselves (e.g. articles, reports).

As s/he continues to build credibility, “trusting” members would find it easy to “consider” his/her products/services or refer others. Even better, some may propose joint ventures, or partnerships of sorts, with attractive benefits.

The result would be that COMPETENT business people, with win-win dispositions, would continue to discover opportunities to progress together via groups that operate as described above. TRUST would be established, and this would ease the way for useful interactions to take place.

The first group Nohj referred to, did NOT seem to have many members who understood the need to operate in this manner. And THAT is the major difference between them and members of other groups. That shortcoming is very likely to deny many of its members, the long term benefits enjoyed by compliant groups.

FINAL WORDS

Even though I’ve used Linked In as a case study, the point I’ve made in this piece actually applies to the use of other social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter etc) for business purposes.
