Creating Your OWN Original Content is Definitely NOT Beyond YOU (Practical Ideas YOU Can Use)!

In a 2013 article (click here) I said: “The Fast-Food” Mentality Does Not Work in Business Related Writing”. That’s especially true online. This article contains MY near decade long experience based advice for website owners who may be struggling to find new, useful and original content to publish on their sites.

Even if 99.9% of other websites copy and paste other people’s content on their website, it is no justification for YOU to join them in doing it!

YOU were given a fully functional brain by God. Otherwise, you could not venture into an activity like website news “reporting” as a BUSINESS!

For heavens sake, when you’re publishing based on a BBC News report, let’s know it’s a BBC News report. Don’t borrow ALL the wordings from BBC and then say YOU are telling us a BREAKING NEWS STORY!

Incidentally, you can DEVELOP your God-given brain to its FULL potential, to come up with your own ORIGINAL wording for the same bit of news.

That way, when you publish on YOUR website, no one can accuse you of “copying and pasting”.(NB: Even then, you’re still better off stating your source!! )

The problem is our quick-fix culture today makes too many people, TOO much in a hurry to get results. So, they are often unwilling to spare the time to do the needed.

When you paraphrase another person’s original words/thoughts, if you did NOT originally CONCEIVE those “ideas” as your OWN brainchild, you MUST give due ATTRIBUTION: SAY SO e.g. “this was originally written or said by XYZ and I found it so compelling that I had to share it here on my website”.

Also an element of GREED is at play here, in the sense some people want to enjoy PRESTIGE and RECOGNITION from their fans and followers by passing off someone else’s “content” they gain privileged access to, as theirs!

It’s so bad now that many do not even know where/when to stop…

For instance, in another article I wrote 2013, titled “Young People Must Be Taught To Be Original! (click to read)!“, I narrated how I discovered a young blogger in Nigeria’s Anambra state using a “stolen and viciously manipulated” version of my popular Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas article titled “Producing Good Catfish is Important, But Finding Good Buyers Is Imperative” (click to read).

For instance, in another article I wrote 2013 (click here), titled 'Young People Must Be Taught To Be Original! (click to read)!', I narrated how I discovered a young blogger in Nigeria's Anambra state using a 'stolen and viciously manipulated' version of my popular Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas article titled 'Producing Good Catfish is Important, But Finding Good Buyers Is Imperative' (click to read).

Not only did he copy and paste it, without including my by-line on his blog, would you believe he also went as far as REPLACING my phone number with his, at the end, where I asked the reader to call me for help in making use of the ideas in my article???

I was so livid that I called him from where I was in a Cotonou cyber cafe and gave him a 24 hour ultimatum to remove the article. And I warned him that if he did not, I would lodge a complaint with regulatory bodies on the web – which would get his host to shut down his site.

Read the rest of the story here…

The truth, as I’ve said in past articles is that in certain climes (e.g Nigeria), there is a VERY severe disregard for intellectual property protection […in case you did not know it, I AM a full blooded 44 year old Nigerian, born and raised there].

Even religious leaders “borrow” other people’s content, and pass it off as theirs for use in preaching to their followers. I KNOW this because I have worked closely with some who did this right before my very eyes!

In order to protect myself (I’ve had many instances in which I had to chase down content thieves online in other parts of the world), about a year ago, I began using the Content Protection service offered by http://www.dmca.com/ on my blog.

Another thing I did to protect myself – from early on – was to DELIBERATELY seek to saturate the web with my articles via a syndication service like Ezinearticles.com

That way, if anyone tried to use my work, the search engines would be more likely to readily link the words with my name – since getting it accepted from me at Ezinearticles.com implied I had been verified to be the original author.

If you own a website, and you know you publish 100% original content, you may wish to do the same things I did.

1. Consider using the FREE version of the http://www.dmca.com/ service.

2. Also try doing some article marketing via Ezinearticles.com

3. Then, if you are willing to challenge yourself, try and be a bit more prolific in your writing. Be sure you write useful, good quality content though – NOT fluff!

4. Use Social Media channels to republish/propagate your content

The above will over time make the search engines, and people who come in contact with your work, recognize you, as the OWNER of your words – and TRUST you. Once that happens,. you should be reasonably safe from content thieves.

Even if a dispute come up, you WILL have a trail of evidence (in form of your relentlessly created volume of past writing/content) to present as proof that you have NO NEED to steal other people’s stuff!

It’s worked fairly well for me so far, which is why I READILY tell others that no website on EARTH can lay claim to ANY of the content on my websites!

On a final note, some funny characters have argued to my hearing, that when people choose to copy from you, it’s a form of flattery.

My answer has always been that when flattery HURTS me, I cannot see it as that (i.e flattery) anymore.

People who pass off my work as theirs DENY me the recognition and reward due to me as the OWNER and ORIGINATOR of that content.

It is certainly NOT something for me to smile about!

That’s why I agree with Debra Gould, who wrote the EXCELLENT article titled “Copying Web Content Isn’t Flattery – It’s Plagiarism(click to read)!”

PS: In case you wonder, here’s what qualifies me to speak competently on THIS issue!

I write a new article daily – from Monday to Saturday (sometimes Sunday) on this blog – and ONE of my key reasons (which I initially chose NOT to announce) was to PROVE to any doubters that I AM the original author of whatever appears on my blog.

Today, a lot of my content is widely syndicated online.

On this website – www.tayosolagbade.com – I have over 1,000 articles.

And each day that passes, at least ONE new article (or my weekly newsletter), or a new PDF report, or a Power Point Slide show, or You tube Video joins them.

One of my reasons for doing this is that years ago, I got emails asking “Are you really the one who writes that volume of stuff?”

That annoyed me a lot.

In reality, I’ve found that people who express such doubts often lack the Emotional Intelligence to stick to their purpose with integrity – especially if they feel they cannot see an immediate reward.

And since they can’t they find it hard to believe any other person can!

What they did not know was that all my life I had been succeeding by excelling in areas where few ventured to dare.

As an employee, over a 7 year period in Guinness Nigeria, I excelled using my self-taught spreadsheet programming skills to single handedly build spreadsheet software that replaced manual data recording and report generation processes in different departments I worked.

No one else could do what I did, and I gained rapid recognition across the company for it – including the IT department. Rapid career advancement opportunities resulted in the process.

As an online entrepreneur, I AM doing the same thing…e.g by building and selling custom MS Excel-VB Driven software, writing creative content for use by clients, on and off the web etc.

Not only do I create new and original content in various channels, I also happen to create stuff that gets me the positive attention and interest of PAYING clients within and outside Africa.

Plus, my work has also earned me “recognition” and acknowledgement from established experts online.

Achieving the above does NOT come easily.

It takes hard work and diligence to relentlessly create new and useful content to publish on such a regular basis.

I spend hundreds of hours THINKING up new ideas, then writing, and building new content based on them to promote my products and services!

It may interest you to know that over 80% of my buyers, find me online, on their own, without having ever heard from, or about me before. And it is my WRITTEN content which they encounter online – often via search engines – that brings them to me!

Let me add here that I have to do my own content creation, while STILL delivering similar material to my clients!

That’s not a vocation for the faint hearted – or lazy…OR intellectually indolent…!

But because I’ve been doing it for so long, and it is My PASSION, I get it done quite well, quickly – seemingly effortlessly.

So much so that I still find plenty of time to spend with my kids – and share valuable REAL LIFE skills with them (see example below)

It is the above – evidence of which is available on THIS BLOG and my other websites – that makes me VERY competent to comment on this pandemic of Content Abuse that plagues us in Nigeria.

I hope those concerned will have the dignity and self-respect to mend their ways from today!

Final Words: Here’s why ANYONE guilty of content abuse in any form should mend their ways…

You have been made in the IMAGE and LIKENESS of the Creator Himself.

Therefore a SMALL task like creating your OWN original content is definitely NOT beyond YOU!

Start Something You Never Need to Retire From (Hint: Why We All Need to Emulate Muhammad Ali – the BOXER, and the MAN!)

“When you saw me in the boxing ring fighting, it wasn’t just so I could beat my opponent. My fighting had a purpose. I had to be successful in order to get people to listen to the things I had to say.” – MUHAMMAD ALI, The Soul of a Butterfly

I recently watched a video – click here to watch now – of Muhammad Ali (at age 35) speaking to a large audience (comprising adults and kids). A young boy asked him “What will you do when you retire?” Ali’s answer proved his boxing genius was matched by an acute sense of “life purpose”.

Basically, Ali told the young mane and the listening audience how he’d emerged from deep reflection to realize that after he retired from boxing, the best way to spend his time would be helping others.

Now, he did not just state it simply in a few words. Ali – always a man who practiced what he preached – took the audience on what I would call an intellectual journey of self-discovery. Especially as it relates to finding one’s purpose in line with the creator’s will.

In order to prepare their minds, Ali started by asking if there were people in the audience who believed in God. Then he asked to see the hands of any who did NOT believe there was a God. In both cases there were hands raised.

To one of those closest to him amongst the latter group, Ali then used the analogy of how the different parts of the world came into existence.

But before that he took asked if man made objects we use daily – like cups etc – could have made themselves. The answer was no.

Following upon that, he then asked if those who claimed not to believe in God could explain how such well planned collection of parts that make up the earth came into being.

Ali went on to conclude that the amazing complexity of the earth itself provided ample proof that a superior and supreme form on intelligence, well above ours, was at work.

So, for him, he said that was why he was convinced of God’s existence.

And as a result, he knew there had to be a purpose for which God had made him. Ali added that if Hell – where those who fail to do God’s will are said to be sent – existed, he would rather work to NOT go there after he dies.

In order to achieve that goal of making heaven, Ali said he had thought of the active years in his life outside those spent sleeping etc – and decided he would use his fame and success to help others e.g. by partnering with NGOs and other support groups.

AND THAT, he said was what he would do after he retired from boxing.

What Amazing Foresight from a Man of Real Vision!

Today, everybody knows that Ali has kept his word with regard to what he said on that day. Several decades ago as a young man.

And his fame has not waned up till now. Neither has the respect and admiration AND love he enjoys from people across the world diminished. This is one man with the rare ability to make people forget their differences. The Muhammad Ali Centre continues to carry on the Ali legacy of helping those who need it.

And Ali remains a central figure – even now in his old age, and despite the health challenge he has had to deal with.

His words spoken over the past decades that get shared on the wall of his Facebook page continue to inspire millions across the world. I, for one continue to draw MASSIVE inspiration from this man’s words that I read as a fan on his page.

Each of Us Needs to Emulate Ali – By Choosing to Start Something We Won’t Need to Retire From

Ali did that. He looked beyond his vocation, to carve out a vision – and a mission from the vision.

He had a message for the world, and he was determined to share that message. But he knew the world would not easily pay attention to a person who was not NOTEWORTHY. So, he let that need to make them LISTEN to him drive his boxing efforts.

That led him to explore all sorts of creative ways to draw attention to himself while boxing.

For example, Ali’s habit of using rhyming poems to communicate – especially to opponents – was unique. Till date, no other boxer has succeeded in doing what he did so well.

As a result, even when he was not boxing, he remained in demand.

People wanted not just to SEE him. They also wanted to hear him speak. To know what he thought about issues affecting them. Even to know what his stand was.

Evidence that Ali’s thinking was as described above can be found in material he shares from his archives even today.

For instance, not long ago, he shared a photo of himself, with a quote that helped me better understand why he chose to adopt such a boldly vocal approach to his own brand of boxing.

When you saw me in the boxing ring fighting, it wasn’t just so I could beat my opponent. My fighting had a purpose. I had to be successful in order to get people to listen to the things I had to say. – MUHAMMAD ALI, The Soul of a Butterfly [Click here for source]

Each of us can do what Ali did i.e Use your VISION for the future, to drive yourself to EXCEL at what you do NOW!

No matter what it is. Think of how you can link what you succeed at today, to what you can do well into your later years that can make the lives of others better.

That desire to achieve your long term vision will help you do what it takes to excel in your more immediate pursuits.

Then later on, you will find that the platform of success you arrive on in future, will make it easy to carry on with your bigger vision/mission right into your old age.

That’s why Ali’s impact continues to be felt even today – LONG after he retired from boxing. Each one of us can make our impact felt the same way too – if we emulate the great Muhammad Ali!

“I try not to speak about all the charities I help, because I believe we can only be truly generous when we expect nothing in return.” – Muhammad Ali

Every Time You Achieve Success, Find Out Why, So That You Can Reproduce It.

I often groan when I hear a celebrity answer the question about the secret of his/her success by saying something like “Na God O!” (i.e. “It’s God’s handiwork!”).  You see, I also succeed with God’s help. BUT, I KNOW there’s more to success achievement than saying “Na God O!” suggests!

And this is where successful people in developed societies often differ from us.

Read an interview with them, and you’ll come away with practical ideas – sometimes step by step instructions – of how to proceed in trying to replicate the success they are celebrated for.

That is why they are able to write books that offer actionable advice on how to succeed the way they have. It is why they are able to demystify their own success achievement for those following them to learn from, and improve upon.

In our societies across Africa too many successful people rarely offer tangible insights into what made them succeed. But to be fair, sometimes they actually do not know – or have not given it enough thought to articulate it into any useful form.

The truth is NOT all those who say they worship God are able to produce performances that will make them become successful/celebrated personalities!

And that is because there are so many specific actions/steps that successful persons take that those NOT as successful do not take as frequently and/or as diligently.

When The Right Questions Are Asked, More Useful Answers Emerge

I believe that many of the interviewed authentic celebrities I refer to would have loved to give more insight into HOW and WHAT made them succeed, if the right kinds of “probing” questions had been asked of them.

Unfortunately, often times their interviewers are not alert to the need to do this for the enhanced benefit of their viewing/listening audiences.

Anyone who has read transcripts of the popular “Conversations With Millionaires” series will understand what I mean.

I refer to the ability of certain interviewers to ask “probing” questions that get answers OUT OF successful persons, IN A WAY that gives listeners more accurate insight into HOW and WHY the celebrities succeeded.

“Clearer Answers” which would then guide those aspiring to follow the same, proven path, even if with modifications or adjustments.

As they say, “Success leaves a trail…”

Our celebrities need to be “helped” to “remember” what they did (& how), in the manner I propose above.

This is because many of them never really sat down (after having succeeded) to THINK about what they actually did to get the results they wanted – and for which they subsequently became celebrated.

In Africa, We Do Not Currently Investigate & Document Achieved Success ENOUGH

This is a fact.

In our society, if we want success to happen for MORE people, MORE frequently, we need to establish and rigorously maintain systems to INVESTIGATE and DOCUMENT what makes celebrated members of society succeed.

This is so that others who aspire can use the information recorded to achieve similar or greater successes – FASTER and with LESS EFFORT.

One over riding benefit is that society will as a result develop faster, contributing to a better world.

The problem is that in our society, we are too much of “DOERS” – and LESS of thinkers!

Each person is so self focused that s/he hardly ever gives a thought to how s/he can make the journey shorter, and less difficult for those who follow.

Tell him/her to GO for a particular goal, and s/he will.

But most often it will be done in a haphazard manner, and with little or no effort to ANALYSE experiences and document lessons learned for future reference/guidance.

The Result of Doing So Much Without Thinking Enough is: Poor Repeatability & Reproducibility Of Achieved Successes

Following from the above, when things fall in place, s/he takes it in his/her stride without sparing a thought for HOW to make those same things fall in place like THAT again in future – repeatedly.

A direct consequence of that inadvertent oversight, is that when things eventually go WRONG, s/he once again has to adopt the trial and error approach used in the past, until, if s/he is lucky, ANOTHER break through occurs.

For many who use this haphazard approach, it possibly works often. However, compared to the alternative proposed in this article, it can be quite costly in terms of time, effort, and even money.

Summary: Below I list three (3) compelling reasons to AVOID using such a haphazard approach:

1. The stress/strain that will arise from recovering from the problems occasioned by the use of a trial and error approach will wear you down – making the “journey to success” more PAINFUL than it should be.

2. You will be inefficient – because it takes you LONGER and costs you MORE time, effort, resources etc, to get the same results.

3. You won’t improve significantly – meaning you may never become good enough to beat your own “Personal Best”. Look at it this way: Only a sprinter who measures and knows her best 100 metres time is 9.99 seconds can AIM to run faster and therefore cross the line at LESS than that time. To achieve that goal, she will then have to CHECK what she can do better or differently to INCREASE her running speed, then TRY it out, UNTIL she succeeds.

The above potentially negative outcome of failing to investigate and understand why you succeed, is that you will LACK the means to EXPAND or GROW.

This could end up giving critics and/or cynics an opportunity to “question” your success.

Evidence to confirm that what I have said in this article is true, can be readily found when one looks at the number of World Champion Long Distance runners that have come out of an African country like Kenya.

Almost yearly, that country produces World Class athletes who gain quick prominence in international circles.

This happens because Kenya has a SYSTEM in place that enables it to REPEAT and REPRODUCE its athletic successes. I have listened to interviews conducted with athletes from that country, and the answers they gave to questions asked confirm this.

Final Words: Check Yourself – Do You Know How to Reproduce Your Success?

If you were to look at yourself, your organisation, your society or your country from a similar perspective, is it possible that there are areas where the success(es) achieved in the past now appear to have been just a “flash(es) in the pan”?

IF YES, maybe it’s time you (and/or others concerned), sat down to INVESTIGATE and DOCUMENT why you succeeded back then, so that you can REPRODUCE it NOW and into the future.

To Succeed More, Develop Smarter Farming Methods – Then Teach Others (for FREE or a Fee)

My 7 year stay in Guinness Nigeria opened my eyes to best practice strategies I now use to help farm businesses boost their performance. If you wonder what beer production has got to do with farm production, keep reading, and it’ll soon be obvious.

I joined Guinness Nigeria as a Graduate Management Trainee in Brewing, following the ban on wheat importation, in late 1994.

And I was subsequently privileged to partake in an internally driven initiative to conduct on-site trials for viable alternative brewing ingredients.

They wanted to maintain beer quality at international standard and at the same time lower production costs. The problem was that with the ban, they had to achieve that goal using locally available cereals, which were of a lower quality.

They could have waited for some large research body somewhere to come up with an idea for using locally available cereals.

But the company’s decision makers knew they would be better off taking their destiny into their own hands.

And we eventually did get it right.

So much so that when in 2000, I and a senior colleague were sent as delegates to the International Brewing Course organized by the Institute & Guild of Brewing (IGB) in the UK, we were referred to by Tim O’Rourke (the organizer), as “experts in Sorghum brewing” from Guinness Nigeria!

Why? Well, at that time, we (Guinness Nigeria) were the only ones in the world successful in brewing “international quality” beer using Maize and Sorghum exclusively.

You must understand this: Other brewing companies used those same ingredients – but only as a complement (i.e. adjuncts) i.e. in small quantities.

The main ingredient recognised for beer production worldwide was Malted Barley. It was regarded as the best ingredient to get the best results.

Few people imagined that respectable quality beer could be produced without it – at least not by 100% exclusion of it in favour of poorly regarded ingredients like Maize and Sorghum.

Guinness’ success in doing just that led to a major shift in perspective – earning that style of brewing a mention in the formal brewing documentation.

Proof of that fact was made apparent when Tim asked I and my colleague to read through a draft manuscript being written, which had a section on Sorghum Brewing. He wanted us to check that it was consistent with what we did.

The above story shows it is possible to take ownership of how one’s business performance evolves, by choosing to innovate more actively in running it.

That’s what Guinness did.

Now, beer manufacturing is basically a batch production process. And that (i.e. batch production) is what farm businesses do too!.

In the case of farm business, a farmer who develops a new system for getting more eggs or meat from poultry, on a consistent basics, can – for instance – decide to offer a coaching program.

This could be made available to start-ups and those already established. Except it involves use of some proprietary formula, I do not see why this cannot happen.

And even if you do have to keep an aspect secret, you can still offer the service.

A Farm CEO in Nigeria’s Ibadan that I’ve referred to several times in the past, told me how he discovered a way to use up to 40% inclusion of cassava flakes – locally called “gari” – in rations he feeds to his catfish.

According to him, this has led to significant sustained cost savings with no noticeable drops in farm output!

But like I’ve told him, he’s only doing half of what I believe is possible…

The other half is sharing your discovery, having tested and found it to be enduring, with others – be it free or for a fee.

I happen to know other farmers who are searching for solutions like his. Some who reached out to me, I referred to him. But there are certainly many more who would gladly contact him IF they knew he had such solutions to offer

Two years ago, I mentioned speaking – on phone – with a Nigerian professor, who is a World Bank consultant…

He revealed that he earned additional income by “selling” feed based on a ration formula he derived using linear programming.

And he jokingly noted that many buyers of his feed had asked that he give them the formula, and he had naturally declined.

That proves what I’m proposing in this article is possible.

You just need to go about it creatively!

I recommend that every farm CEO who wishes to make MORE money (outside the direct sale of farm produce) adopt the ideas I advocate here.

In other words, work hard to develop improved cost-saving ways of running your farm production processes.

Aim to lower you cost of producing each batch of farm output for instance.

Then take some of your useful discoveries you make and MONETIZE them.

The ones you choose to share for FREE will inadvertently attract positive attention from your target audience.

That would give you an indirect way to promote your ideas, and get name recognition/credibility.

A timeless and cost-effective platform, to implement this strategy would be a website – with an email newsletter system built into it.

What I refer to above, is what I do with my work. Some aspects of my methods/discoveries I offer for free.

Others I make available ONLY for a fee:

A good example is the Poultry Layer Farm Business Plan I dispatched to a client in Nigeria last week. I’ve now re-packaged it in a generic form, for sale to interested buyers, with an option of including the multi worksheet Excel workbook with projection tables, and formulas. Click here to contact me, if you’d like to get a copy.

And that’s just an example of many that I have done – and still intend to do.

I routinely announce my new discoveries/offers via my blog – which republished via RSS syndication to my website, face book twitter feed to visitors, fans and followers.

Plus, I send broadcasts periodically, via my email newsletter –and subscribers.

If you need help making use of the ideas I’ve offered here, to begin generating passive income outside your main farming business, click here to contact me.

Always Stand Up and Speak Truth on Behalf of Those Who Need It!

I spontaneously help others I identify to need it, without waiting to be asked. And I never expect to get thanked for it. I do not need it.

The only way anyone can thank me is by helping others in the same way!

I never let what anyone wants to do (or is doing) for me, influence my self-esteem.

You see, I fear no one, and am never intimidated by anyone’s success, influence or wealth.

That’s why those who know me accept that I will always speak my mind on ANY issue regardless of whose Ox is gored – even if it’s someone who just did me a favour.

I say this especially with reference to instances I’ve seen unfair treatment being meted out to another person by someone I knew.

You see, I believe every living being deserves to be treated with respect and consideration.

But what I have found out about this strange world we’re in is that too many people pay lip service to preserving values like those mentioned above.

It does not matter if a person is handsome/pretty, ugly, rich, poor or lives on the streets – treat him/her right!

I choose to relate with – and acknowledge – people based on who they are, and not some notion of their status.

For instance, back when I still lived in Nigeria, I often went out of my way – sometimes till well after 12 midnight – to help total strangers.

One time, an innocent Okada (commercial motorcycle rider) got wrongfully picked up by Police, just outside their command.

I followed them into the station, and insisted he be released, because I witnessed what happened and he was not at fault.

For over 3 hours, close to 11.30p.m, I left my car parked outside the police station, and engaged the officers in a debate, over the matter, until they agreed to let him go.

Acts like the above eventually earned me amazingly loyal friendships with some of those I helped.

They would later seek me out, and do things for me that others had to pay for.

Even when I tried to decline, they would insist.

This is what I teach to my kids to do as well…to stand up and speak truth on behalf of those they identify to need it!

Some people dislike me for it, but that’s the way life is.

Everyone cannot like you. But that does not mean we should fail to treat people right – or stand up for them, when we see them being treated wrongly.

My question to you is this…

Those who flock around you, who “like” you…how many are you sure will really stand by you when the chips are down?

I mean in bad times, when associating with you may be perceived as unwise by others, will they STILL stand by you?

What I have learnt is that many people can be amazingly good at hiding their true feelings.

Especially if they feel there is a useful benefit to be had by being on your good side.

So, even when they see you have qualities or faults they detest, they will stick around, and keep telling you they like you.

But that does not mean they will not stab you in the back if they find someone they feel they will benefit more from. Or that they will not look the other way, if they see you getting treated badly.

And what about YOU? Would you stand up for others you identify to be in need of your support?

I certainly hope you do. Like I tell anyone who cares to listen. Every time you do so for someone, you effectively make it possible for someone, at some time in the future, to also do the same thing for you – or for someone you care about!

Know what they about Karma? Well, it’s true. I know, because I have experienced it countless times.

Which is why I’m writing this article and recommending you do what I propose in it.

I’m hopeful that you’ll adopt a positive view of all that I’ve said here, and see if there is any truth in it, that you can act on for the future.

Final Words: This was NOT at attempt to judge or “lecture” anyone.

My purpose was simply to challenge the reader to RESOLVE to be more REAL in his/her interpersonal interactions.

Too many phonies seem to be around in society these days. As a result too few people are speaking and acting truthfully. The result is that we have a lot of dishonesty, deception, happening across society – and especially even within families.

Only those who take the conscious decision to be different, and to remain that way, will emerge unscathed in the end.

The rest, who indulge themselves in these naughty tendencies, will end up wondering why they never achieve sustainable progress at what they do.

This is because whether they like it or not, there are rules, set by the creator, to govern our conduct here on earth. And every person who flouts those rules will attract what could be considered “hidden penalties”.

That will happen because when they begin to manifest, time may have passed so much that we forget the wrong we did, that triggered it.

You don’t want that to happen to you, because it rarely ends well for those who do things that attract such penalties from the creator!

Defeat Traitors Using Compassion (Hint: Welcome a Judas into Your Life!)

FACT: You can be a genius and still fail due to a "close friend’s" betrayal.

This week, I’m teaching my kids about this. "Et tu Brutus?!" Caesar’s famous exclamation is one of the classic examples of how great people responded to discovery of acts of betrayal by those closest to them.

In my personal opinion, I believe enduring the betrayal of our closest allies, friends, relatives etc, and going on in spite of it, to achieve our important goals in life, is the greatest way to succeed.

Until you have had to deal with such a situation, you probably may never know for sure just how tough you are, or how much you really want to succeed. This article offers ideas for the interested individual about how to turn this type of situation to his/her advantage.

Have You Ever Had A "Judas" In Your Life?

Have you ever had to associate with certain individuals who you later sensed and went on to discover were in the habit of giving out your personal information, or even telling what you consider confidential or "secret" to others they knew from relating with you, you did not approve of?

Some would do this in order to gain the favour of those they passed the information to. Others could do it to spite you – for instance, maybe they feel they need to bring you down, for being (what they consider) ‘too proud" or "overconfident".

Have you ever discovered that a certain person you allowed to get close to you/confided in, turned out to have sought you out so as to gain your confidence and then betray you to those who "sent " him/her? This happens all the time – especially between people or groups that compete against one another. Individuals and large corporations, nations etc all play this game in one form or the other. This article offers ideas for the interested individual about how to turn this type of situation to his/her advantage.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You may not be consciously competing with anyone. However, those who observe you may feel what you are doing affects them one way or the other. This could make them decide YOU are THEIR competition. That makes YOU a target! How do you deal with that situation when it develops? Read on for some ideas.

Welcome A “JUDAS” Into Your life!™

Let me make what should (hopefully) be a humorous addition to this chapter that might make it easier that story and you will find that it was said that Judas was "chosen".

In life, you can decide to see each person that chooses to play "antagonist", "critic" or "enemy" as the "unfortunate Judas" in your own life who is destined to help you achieve another level of success or greatness though one or more acts of "betrayal"!

Now, I will tell you that in my experience, this really does happen. And many times I have personallydiscovered that the "Judas" of my life at any point in time usually lives or works in fairly close proximity to me – denying me the convenience of avoiding him/her! As a result, I am forced to find a way to relate with the person without compromising my position.

Your Judas Will NOT Be Your "Friend" But S/he Can Help You GROW!

The truth based on the above, about the individuals described is that event they they made out to be your "friends", their actions were not those a friend would take. They were in fact more consistent with what an "enemy" would do!

So, what do you do, when you find them out? I say it depends on the circumstances. In my other articles titled, "Do You Know How To Deal With Those Who Mock And Ridicule You?" and "Why You May Want To Rejoice When Others Mock You", I suggested that the reader consider limiting his/her contact with persons who adopted a negative stance of mockery and ridicule toward him or her.

However, in this article, I am referring to persons who have taken it upon themselves to go against you – not just to taunt, mock and ridicule, but to bring you down or even harm you. Such persons would be correctly described as enemies. But rather than run away from them or hide, I want to ask you to see them as quite useful to have around!

The Dalai Lama Believes We Need Enemies

The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet, who has (I understand) been in exile for some decades now, since the Chinese occupation of his country. There is a quote I read somewhere credited to this great sage, that have personally found quite instructive:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enemies test our ability to feel compassion, and strengthen us in doing so” – Dalai Lama.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Dalai Lama Is Right

It is my belief that we need "enemies" or antagonists in our lives. They help us to keep our heads from going into the clouds, and by so doing help us stay "human" especially when we’ve been successfully forging ahead in pursuing our magnificent obsessions!(To learn what I mean by "Magnificent Obsession", read the article version of my 113 page self-help print manual titled Ten Ways You Can Use Self-Development To Create The Future You Want.)

Personally, I would “get worried” if everyone around me keeps saying they like me, and I never run into anyone who feels or acts differently. I once heard it said that “a little dose of paranoia is healthy”. My point is that it would be folly for anyone to expect that everyone else would like her. I said this earlier and I’m saying it again: there will always be people who will not like you (or will not want to work or cooperate with you). You MUST prepare – and learn how – to deal with such people.

Also, it is my opinion that we need the periodic ”tests” of our abilities posed by those people who refuse to “like” us and who give us a hard time. Just imagine if everybody liked you and always gave you an easy run. Imagine if everybody said you were their favorite and there was no single person who expressed reservations about you, or was cynical about what you could or could not do (?).

What If We Stopped Having Bad People Or Bad Things In This World?

Maybe I’ll take it a bit further – what if we suddenly stopped having "bad people" or "bad things" happening in the world? It would be quite boring and unchallenging to continue living here wouldn’t it? We lock our cars because someone could gain easy entry if we didn’t. We watch what we say because a mischievous person might report to others when we say things that are not exactly "nice" about them.

Simply put, “bad” people – or the possibility of a bad thing happening – keep us alert and “on our toes”. It is this same consciousness that makes us teach our children what they need to do to stay safe and out of trouble when they are away from us. Without the knowledge gained from the previous so-called "bad" experiences in society, we would not be wiser about how to live in this world – talk less of being able to advise our children – would we?

Now, a person that perpetually antagonizes us might eventually push us to a point where we actually develop an intense dislike (or hatred) for him. The Dalai Lama however challenges us NOT to harbour such feelings towards anyone – even when it is someone that obviously takes delight in causing us pain or discomfort. It’s ironic that most religions actually advocate this philosophy for adoption by believers and YET, many believers find that they are often unable to really practice it!

Why? Because they are human, and it actually takes tremendous effort and commitment to maintain a compassionate disposition to people who make things difficult for us, or do not like us! It’s so much easier, for instance, to read the portion of the bible where the believer is asked to "turn the other cheek" than to actually do what it says. I am sure many who read the foregoing statement will understand what I mean. When it comes to "doing" it , a lot of people “struggle”.

The secret to mastering the art of feeling compassion for one’s "enemies" or "antagonists" is to ALWAYS remember this:

Without the "threat" of a bad thing or person coming around to do us "harm", we are likely to relax to the point where we lose grip of the things we already have in control. Think about sports – the team or individual that usually wins is not necessarily the one that scores first. No, it is often the one that gets in the lead, then STAYS ALERT to – and thwarts – all attempts by the opponent to equalise till the game ends!

Like I said earlier, the Dalai Lama is right because ALWAYS, at the end of it all – maybe when I’m moving on – I find that I have become stronger due to the perpetual presence of my "Judas(es)".

Some typical benefits include increased "mental stamina", "thickened skin", "self-control" etc.

This has been my personal experience.

I am sure you will find that yours will be similar (or better) if you adopt this philosophy towards your "enemies" or "antagonists".

"To Laugh Often And Much, To Win The Respect Of Intelligent People And The Affection Of Children, To Earn The Appreciation Of Honest Critics And Endure The Betrayal Of False Friends, To Appreciate Beauty, To Find The Best In Others, To Leave The World A Bit Better, Whether By A Healthy Child, A Garden Patch, Or A Redeemed Social Condition; To Know Even One Life Has Breathed Easier Because You Have Lived. This Is To Have Succeeded!" – Ralph Waldo Emerson

So, are you ready to welcome a Judas into your life today? It could be the start of your climb to a new level of personal success!

To Succeed More, You Need a Real World Understanding of the Meaning of Intelligence

We often hear (or read) this word – “intelligence” – being used in different situations by different people e.g an intelligent "writer", intelligent "student", intelligent "speaker", intelligent "artist", PLUS on a less approving note, an intelligent THIEF ! :-)

In this article, I advocate the adoption of what I consider ONE all embracing, and real-world relevant definition of intelligence, which can help those who use it live more successfully.

The word intelligence basically refers to some form of ability to do things. In conventional use for instance, the term typically describes a person’s (academic) aptitude regarding the use of words, figures, and various forms of computation.

A broader application is inclusive of body skills (e.g. an intelligent footballer), familiarity with concrete materials, ability to adjust to new conditions and/or facilities in solving new problems etc.

But, What Exactly Is Intelligence?

The brain can be developed just the same as the muscles can be developed, if one will only take the pains to train the mind to think” – Thomas Alva Edison

Intelligence is also used to describe how a person deals generally with people, things, ideas and events.

Research has shown that about 20% variation in the Intelligence Quotient (IQ – expressed as a ratio of an individual’s mental age to her chronological or real age) of individuals is caused by factors like quality of nutrition; health; sleep; experience; social contact; drugs taken by mother and general upbringing.

But age has been found to have little influence on the level of intelligence as measured by IQ.

In fact it’s been found that maximum mental growth is achievable at age 13, stabilizing at about 70. Also, and contrary to societal myth, modern brain research has now shown clearly that mental abilities of human beings do not reduce with ageing.

Tony Buzan (inventor of the world-famous Mind Maps®) is widely regarded as a world authority on the brain, memory, creativity, and speed reading, reports. In his Speed Reading book, Tony stated that Dr. Marion Diamond of the University of California confirmed via research findings that “there is no evidence of brain cell loss with age in normal, active and healthy brains”.

It was found that if a person actively uses and “trains” her brain (Buzan’s Centers and books teach HOW), there is a “biological increase in its inter connectivity complexity resulting in a significant rise in the person’s intelligence”.

This explains why after people in their sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties are “brain trained” at Buzan’s centers, measurable, statistically significant and permanent improvements are achieved by the old people in every area of mental performance!

By the way, one (long-discovered) way of training your brain is by frequent reading and thinking – according to geniuses like Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein.

Most debated probably has been the issue of how Sex and Race affect intelligence. It was once believed (and some still do today) that the black race was less intelligent than their white counterparts, and females less than males.

There is however no research evidence to support those assumptions.

A Definition I Advocate For Adoption(Using "Academic Performance", "Murder Investigations", And "Interpersonal Communication" As Case Studies)

Over the years it’s been agreed that IQ is limited as a measure of intelligence – even in the academic dimension. Intelligence has increasingly become recognized as a result of one’s total life experiences.

This means intelligence tests results express how well one has learnt to achieve in the areas, which are being measured by the test. This is why I believe that Robert Kiyosaki’s father’s definition of Intelligence, as “the ability to make finer distinctions” is most appropriate for real-life use.

1. Schooling: When Robert Kiyosaki was ten years old, his friend and classmate Andy was announced to the class(after an IQ test the entire class had taken), as a “genius with a high IQ”.

But Robert’s father in response to his son’s subsequent queries about the definition of intelligence simply told him it referred to a person’s "ability to make finer distinctions”.

Robert said he learnt from his Dad’s explanation that Andy his friend was smarter than him in the classroom because he could learn better there, but that did not mean Andy was smarter than Robert(THAT was the "finer" distinction"). This understanding went a long way to make him finish his schooling instead of dropping out for fear of being called stupid etc.

"A person does not need to go to college to learn facts. He can learn them from books. The value of a liberal arts college education is that it trains the mind to think…Imagination is more important than knowledge.” – Albert Einstein

2. Murder Investigations: In the society I live/work in some types of law enforcement agents are renowned for their aversion for "making finer distinctions".

For instance, when one of them sees a dead body, a knife and a man seemingly "loitering" nearby, s/he immediately decides the loitering man MUST have killed the dead person – else what could s/he be doing there at that point in time(God help us all!).

So s/he conveniently puts the "loiterer" in jail and tells his/her boss a suspect has been found. Soon (except the poor "loiterer" has providence on his side), the case is announced as solved, and a possibility innocent person sentenced to time in prison!

Why do they do this? One school of thought has it that maybe because that option requires the least thinking – or quickly satisfies people that justice has been done, and frees the agency from having to answer questions about how far investigations have gone and so on.

Under different circumstances, a murder investigation would be prosecuted more thoroughly. Typically, the lead detective/investigator will go the extra mile to do some thinking.

Often s/he would try to establish a “motive”, and in the process probably discover something others missed and (maybe) end up finding the “true” killer.

The logic is that except a person is confirmed mad or insane, he/she would have had a “convincing enough reason”(motive) for committing a crime.

The investigator has to establish what that motive was, and get concrete evidence to support his findings. If he cannot, the law prevents him from holding on to the suspect longer than a specified period. So he continues digging. This method has helped detect people being “framed” or who decided to own up to crimes they did not commit so as to protect loved ones.

Agatha Christie’s suspense filled detective stories provide an excellent example of how deep thinking is(and should be) applied by investigating officers in solving cases of crime. The lead character – Inspector Hercule Poirot – solves cases by applying deductive reasoning and making finer distinctions.

The moral here: Actually derives from looking at the methodology employed by the investigators. They get information, then subject it to logical reasoning against the background of prior information, and based on that make deductions which then guide them on deciding what action to take – leads to follow etc. It takes people who do plenty of deep thinking and strive to make finer distinctions(so as to avoid jumping to wrong conclusions) to work like that.

Sometimes the obvious thing is not always the correct or most important thing.” – Tayo K. Solagbade

3. Interpersonal Communication: Successful communication has occurred when the words I write/speak to another person(s) are received and understood by my target audience exactly as I intended it.

However there are two sides to the communication process – that of the "communicator" and that, of the "communicatee". If the former does a good job of passing her ideas across, it does not necessarily follow that the latter will receive(or “admit“ receiving) the intended communication!

This may be so for 2 main reasons. One, the communicatee may unconsciously have “noises” (like biases, preconceptions, past experiences etc) interfering with his interpretation of the message. Secondly, he may simply deliberately feign misunderstanding to make a point.

Both cases happen all the time. Sometimes it is said that people will hear only what they want to hear – no matter how many times you tell them what you actually mean. (Re: Inter-tribal, ethnic or racial conflicts).

This almost hopelessly booby trapped situation that anyone who has to communicate with others faces, I believe is what led Dan Kennedy to refer to what he called a "Communication Minefield".

For a sincere hearer to truly understand a message, he/she must be objective, listen actively(and not pretend to) and be able to make those finer distinctions i.e. apply intelligence.

But then not everyone knows how to do the last part i.e. make the distinctions.

And that’s why I am writing this article( to impress upon the reader the NEED for him/her to begin to do this from now on). It is also why we must thank Robert Kiyosaki for sharing his father’s definition.

A reporter once asked Albert Einstein: “What is the speed of sound?”, to which the genius replied: “I don’t know. I don’t carry information in my mind that is readily available in books”.

Always Weigh "The Evidence" Or "Information" Or "News" About A Person/Issue Against Your Personal Observations BEFORE Taking A Stand!

Let me put it this way. A Police investigator that arrests, jails and get conviction of an innocent person for a crime the latter did not commit will likely be called “stupid” or “unintelligent” by his boss if/when eventually his error is revealed.

So, to appear intelligent, you must not only strive to employ objective, deductive reasoning and thinking, but you must also have the courage to follow your resultant insight/convictions right to the end, so that your actions end up being appropriate and justified. Let’s face it there is hardly anyone who doesn’t’t want to be called intelligent !

So when next someone comes up to you, for instance, with some "gossip" or negative information about another person, you might want to (and I do mean "literally"!) pick up up a teaspoon of salt and put it in your mouth.

The objective will be to jolt your senses, and help you remember to "make finer distinctions" in assessing the person you have been told about. I have seen many highly educated and otherwise extremely intelligent persons so readily draw conclusions about someone they have NEVER even met, based on negative information fed to them by another person.

It is my considered opinion, that evidence of a persons true intelligence – and education – can be readily seen in how s/he weight information available about a person or issue against actual observations s/he is able to make through deliberate personal effort.

Many times those who fail to look below the surface fall victim of deliberate manipulation by devious persons against their perceived rivals or opponents I do not like being used, and will never try to use anyone against another.

However societies tend not to be lacking in people who readily resort to campaigns of calumny to discredit someone they dislike.

And this works quite well when those they feed the bad information fail to "apply their powers of discretion and discernment" by checking to confirm that what they have been told is a true and accurate representation of the person or issue in contention.

The result: reputations are ruined; characters assassinated and lives/careers destroyed. If not for anything else, I urge you – for the sake of your own good name – to begin making finer distinctions today, in deciding how to use information that those you meet or relate with pass to you.

Chances are great that over time, you will not only discover those around you whose word cannot be depended upon, BUT you will also avoid being named as one of those responsible for spreading falsehood about others.

Final Words: Some People’s Egos Keep Them from Learning!

And that’s because they hold faulty definitions of intelligence in their minds. They think being intelligent means appearing to be “cool, calm and collected”; never making mistakes, failing or being at fault i.e. always being right.

In fact they MAKE SURE of this by doing everything possible to hide away ANY and EVERY evidence of their failures or mistakes, so no one ever gets to know!).

But that does not really work in the end, as the limited and mediocre, accomplishments they record in their lives very often attest to the fact that they have not been sincere in their past actions!

"When you fearlessly pursue excellence by repeatedly failing and learning from those failures in order to succeed at newer and higher levels in life, you ALWAYS gain an edge over those who choose to play safe." – Tayo K. Solagbade

Learning is a never-ending journey. Yet after one little achievement, some people “hang up their gloves” and go ahead to live on THAT “old glory” till they die. Worse still they seem to be able to find others who praise them for doing so!

The reverse obtains where there is an entrenched culture of striving perpetually for excellence. In such successful societies, people have a habit of "making finer distinctions" – and so never settle for average, since they always realize they can do better if they try harder.

To achieve our full potentials as individuals and as a nation, we must adopt the right definition of intelligence, and begin to make finer distinctions in our everyday pursuits so as to achieve sustainable progress.
