People Who Succeed Are Often Driven By A Compelling Need (True Story About My ExcelVB Income & Expense Manager – Get it for N1,000 instead of N5,000) – Offer Expires MNT Friday 31st July 2015

If this app could speak, it would tell you about a heartbreakingly prolonged, adversity filled period of my life during the last QUARTER of 2007(described in another article here – click)…

That was when I marketed that app, on a CDROM from door to door (via daily pavement pounding) in the Ogba-Ikeja area of Nigeria’s Lagos state.

I pushed myself so hard, that in November 2007, I sold over N41,000.00 (Forty One Thousand Naira) worth of it to micro, small and medium business owners in the above mentioned area. Funny thing is I NEVER thought about how much it was adding up to. I was just going out there each day, driven by a need to make money to meet the basic needs of myself and my dependents.

What I learned during that phase serves me well today, as I sell to high profile buyers from home – using the web.

How is this possible you ask?

You see, if you pay careful attention, you CAN learn a LOT about yourself and the psychology of selling to HUMAN BEINGS in the process of struggling and suffering to make sales!

When you KNOW that you have NO MONEY in your pockets or bank account to buy fuel into your car, or buy food for your wife and kids to eat at home, YOUR RESOLVE to close sales is likely to HARDEN!

Human beings like leisure, pleasure, comfort, fun etc. We do NOT like stressing ourselves when alternatives exist to take things easy. We love EASE.

We therefore need to have something that we simply cannot ignore happen to use, to DENY that love of EASE.

This is why many who succeed as sales persons tend to be those who are DRIVEN by a need they have (e.g. lack of money, hunger, poverty) which they know that CLOSING sales can help them meet

A guy who needs to cough up N150k to complete his rent renewal, will be DRIVEN to try closing more sales of his Web Marketing service (priced at N100k).

He will do so, in order to fulfill his rent obligation, and have a little left over to live on.

What I just said above is what has happened personally to me: October to December 2007 was an extremely challenging period of my life!

But there were many others…

Those kinds of circumstances are what I routinely found myself faced with, and often with NO ONE to help (Especially since close relatives had already been lending me money I never managed to return)!

Those painful, prolonged experiences of struggle and suffering forced me to grow faster than I would have, if I had HAD alternatives to fall back on every time.

For instance, my negotiation skills rapidly improved because of the constant need I had to return home with at least ONE sale of my N2,500 software, so as to provide for my family’s needs for the next day. We were basically living from hand to mouth back then.

Yet, I persisted. Actually I had no choice. My bridges were burnt.

So I had to steel myself (hat tip to Burt Dubin) and fight to get back on my feet.

And it worked: I came face to face with my other self(as promised by Napoleon Hill in Think & Grow Rich) i.e. the one that KNOWS that conquering adversity is necessary step for success achievement.

I consequently gained LOTS of confidence and selling skills refinement from selling my N2,500 app. I also got a LOT of ideas about WHO I could sell to, WHAT I could sell to them, and HOW to make them buy.

It all began to pay off within the first 8 weeks of 2008…

I won high paying projects building apps much more elaborate and sophisticated than the N2,500 app. The client companies (a hotel, as well as a hospital) hired me to develop custom apps for them after I did my demonstration of the smaller app.

Basically, the decision maker asked “Can you build something that works like this app of yours, to do what we do here in MS Excel?

And I simply replied: “Of course. Just tell and/or show me what you do, and how you do it, then tell me what you want the finished app to do. For best results, let me have someone to vet what I’m doing, to minimize rework, and you’ll have your app in the promised delivery duration.

By this time, my selling instincts from the painful periods of hardship had become keenly honed…

Among other things, I’d become adept at parrying any attempts to haggle about or beat down my fees unreasonably.

I was always clear in my mind about HOW MUCH I needed to get from each job, to ensure reasonable peace of mind for me and my family, until I got another project.

The result was that I got home with much more money in my pockets.

Today, I use what I learnt to close sales without even meeting clients face to face.

That’s how suffering helps you. When you have a NEED that you feel compelled to satisfy, and money is required, that NEED is likely to drive you to put in much more effort, than you normally would be willing to, in order to get the money that enables you meet it!

During the period when that need remains unmet, you may feel pain, stress or have to struggle. In other words, you may experience some suffering. But ultimely, if you persist, that NEED you feel is what will drive you to succeed.

That’s why I tell people all the time that suffering is good for us…like Jim Rohn said, “Adversity forces the human spirit to grow!”

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – An Unusual LIVE Event Strategy That Attracts Buyers at Zero Cost

The following short story about an event I attended in Benin Republic provides a background…

It was 6.00p.m Saturday 20th June 2015. I’d worked online since 10a.m before going to Tokpa motor part to try taking a taxi to Ouidah – a trip I’d long delayed since 2013.

But vehicles were few in coming. I waited still – eager to satisfy my curiosity about a town I’d heard so much about for it’s historical relevance from various sources e.g. tripadvisor.com.

By 8p.m I was told by a taxi owner at the park, who had just arrived from Ouidah, where, that the roads were in a particularly bad state due to the heavy rains, and that it was unlikely anyone would be willing to go that route.

I was disappointed. But I soon thought of another way to make use of the free time. So I went off to “le terrain” at Cotonou’s Stade de L’amitie…

I knew from my stay in Calavi back in 2013, that they often had open air music playing with food getting served to people etc, especially on weekend nights…

It turned out to be an excellent decision as I have a GREAT time watching a LIVE show outside one of the restaurants.

Amateur Beninese dancers of various ages took turns on stage to display exciting “Makossa” dancing moves (mixed with amazing acrobatic hip hop stunts)  individually and in teams of three.

One after the other they came on stage and did their thing…to the audience’s admiration.

Towards the end, one team of 3 young men in their 20s arrived and they were introduced as winners from a national competition held somewhere else earlier in the year.

By this time I was thinking of leaving…I thought I’d seen all the sickest possible moves by that time from watching previous dancers.

But by the time these 3 guys took over the stage, I quickly understood why they were chosen as national champions – they were truly awesome:

Their synchronized hips movement (you know the Francophone hip gyrations), punctuated with back flips and other stunts perfectly timed with the music, made me forget my need for sleep!

The show eventually ended around 2a.m or so.

But I was SOOO glad I was unable to make my much anticipated trip down to Ouidah, otherwise I would not have discovered this wonderful event!

What I love most about the whole show was the variety:

For instance, we had some dancers I put at under 10 years of age.

You also had the pretty little twin girls dressed in matching attire – managed by their mother.

Then there was a crippled elderly man in a hand pedalled bike who sang beautifully!

None of them got paid (except possibly the champion trio, who seemed to come in as the main event).

So the payoff for most of the dancers was obviously the opportunity to possibly build a reputation, by performing before a large audience of high income earning elite:

A. who may hire them to dance at private events

B. Who, if impressed, may give them generous cash tips on stage (that happened a lot) or as they go round the tables with bowls and caps in hand (I noticed the champion dancers did not do this. Often only the really young kids and student dancers).

C. In addition, the dancers apparently love what they do so much, that they welcome every opportunity to show off new moves before any LIVE audience.

Another thing I loved was the excellent organization – and the way the event was integrated into the restaurant’s business model:

The truly gifted MC coordinated the visiting dancers superbly.

Some of the dancers travelled from afar (e.g. Seme, the border town, and other cities). Before letting each act perform, he did an introduction and often found a way to exchange some banter with them in a way that stirred even more interest.

While he did that,  members of his restaurant team went round seeing to the needs of seated guests – most tables ended up covered with plates, glass cups and bottles paid for and consumed by guests kept glued to their seats by the gripping LIVE entertainment that went on uninterrupted.

It was an open event of sorts, but I gathered that there was a screening process to evaluate an intending performer via an audition.

Based on the foregoing, here’s what made me write this article:

This restaurant operator conceived an excellent reproducible strategy for attracting and keeping large traffic of potential buyers, in an open air show open to anyone who passes screening.

That way it was more like a public service, making it unnecessary to offer rewards or remuneration to dancers. Yet he got to reap substantial sales of food and drinks mainly via stands setup along the perimeter of the open air arena.

This brings me to the point I wish to make:

Instead of paying for ads, flyers and posters, he setup a LIVE show that runs through Friday to Monday a.m, using resources already part of the business overheads to attract potential buyers.

This strategy can be adapted for use in virtually any business model – even farm business.

You just need to think of how to go about it: if you can’t do the thinking, challenge an employee to do it for you, OR hire an expert with relevant proven competence (like me) to help you.

Final Words: For experts-who-speak, this strategy has been in use for decades!

A bestselling book written decades ago by a famous author, now late, tells a true story about how one man used this strategy to achieve financially rewarding success, by running a VERY unusual speaking event across the USA!

I will add here that I’ve since adapted ideas I got from reading that story, for use in Nigeria – with success. It’s a near fool proof way to achieve speaking business promotion success at low to zero cost – while earning income via other channels at the same time.

he’s published.

Sell What You KNOW for Profit – by Presenting it Professionally (True Story)

“Thanks Mr. Tayo for the visit, timely n wonderful. Thankx. Mr. K (name removed for privacy).”

[Lagos, 6p.m] I just returned from a 5 hour long visit to Lagos’ Oko Oba-Agege’s equipment suppliers, vet shops and feed mills. The above message was sent to me by a poultry farming expert I consulted there. So why was he thanking ME, when I was the one who went to consult HIM?

SMS sent to me by a farm business expert I visited in Oko Oba - “Thanks Mr. Tayo for the visit, timely n wonderful. Thankx. Mr. K (name removed for privacy).”

Well, like I tell people all the time, I adhere to a success philosophy that requires one to CREATE AN IMPRESSION OF INCREASE to everyone s/he comes in contact with.

Read on to find out how I did that, to the extent that this gentleman felt obliged to send me a thank you message after I’d left (NB: I strongly recommend YOU form the habit of doing same)!

Mr. K is a poultry farm business consultant who specializes in helping people start-up/manage broiler and poultry enterprises.

I found him when I did a Google search for farm businesses located in Oko Oba. I do this all the time when I wish to save time in visiting an area. Most people simply get dressed and go around asking for directions.

I happen to know that more and more farm business owners are taking the pains to put their business online via one or more platforms – often free ones. Most are not very web savvy, but they know the web offers potential benefits that can help them make more money or reduce operational (e.g. sales and marketing) expenses.

My search threw up about 2 pages of useful addresses, one of which was an abandoned facebook page setup in about 2 years ago, by Mr. K for his business.

He had posted a few updates and then stopped. But his mobile phone number was still visible.

I was browsing on my Blackberry, so I clicked on the phone number, and after 2 rings he picked up.

I explained to Mr. K, that I wanted to visit Oko Oba to consult with him and a few others, towards getting information to prepare an elaborate Broiler and Poultry Farm Business Plan for an old client, who wishes to venture into both areas.

This is an independent consultant client I’ve known since 2007, and who has hired me to develop several Excel-VB software for him over the years.

Now, he’s planning to retire from consulting to a property in his home town, which he wants to run the poultry business on.

Mr, K agreed to meet with me, and promptly gave me directions to find my way to his office. Around 12 noon, I arrive there, and he readily gave answers to all my questions relating to the data I needed for the plan I need to prepare.

In my usual manner, I went out of my way to find out how I could also add value to him – as a way of giving back…

I asked why he’d not continued using his Facebook page. He explained that he’d launched it to promote a broiler production project for a client, and once that ended, he’d stopped.

When he said this, I pointed out the fact to him that our meeting would never have happened if he had not left his mobile phone number on that page. I then added that many Nigerians today, readily use the web to search for information on how to start-up poultry and other farm businesses and that most were looking to hire a competent expert to help them begin.

I went on to tell him that if they encounter even a simple Facebook page regularly updated with useful information along the lines of their interest, they are likely to connect with owner of that page – if not immediately, then over time.

Quite often they would start by LIKING the page and monitoring the updates from it.

What I was saying was not theory: I promptly showed him a real life example of a Facebook page doing just that from Ibadan, in South West Nigeria.

This chap basically has built a captive audience of fans for his business on his page, and regular conversations are visible, in which they ask for his products and services, in response to offers he makes. And sometimes they simply thank and commend him for the useful information he shared (e.g. a Facebook note on a topic of interest) on the page.

Like I told the owner of that page, when I called him late last year to make my usual no-strings-attached suggestions, he can do SO MUCH more and reap even better monetary rewards, if he were to setup a system to automatically capture and use the contact information of his fans to reach them OUTSIDE facebook. So far, it does not appear that he has acted on my suggestion.

But even without doing what I proposed, it’s obvious the Ibadan based CEO is getting useful results from his Facebook page based marketing (click here to request the link to view his page)

I just do not like the rather manual, and non-viral/non-syndicated, Facebook limited nature of his model.

Having said that, I knew Mr. K would benefit greatly from adopting a similar model, which is basically zero cost. So, I showed him the Facebook page on my phone, and emailed him a link to it at the same time.

Then I forwarded 2 other emails containing links to other resources I send out to interested persons, which explain more about how to use what I call a Web Marketing System to boost marketing of your products, and also to sell your knowledge.

I told him that rather than simply let people make him prepare broiler production plans and have it free, promising to get back to him (which they rarely did), he could prepare a special handbook or guidebook on Starting a Broiler Production Business, and offer it for sale to those who contact him.

That way, when they call, he can simply offer a brief cost-free consultation and they say “If you want more detailed information, buy my information pack or e-book etc”.

No serious minded enquirer will say no to this!

But even if s/he does say NO, you can still say “Okay, I offer a one hour consultation session for say N5,000 or N10,000”. In certain cases you may choose to apply your discretion, and waive this condition, if you perceive the person is not likely to pull a fast one on you. I do this all the time.

What is important is to have a formal procedure in place for dealing with people who come to you for INFORMATION and/or EDUCATION which your unique experience and expertise makes you qualified to give.

Do NOT give everything away: You have the right to sell what you KNOW for profit. It is the key to lasting success and profits.

What I’m saying here applies to ANYONE in ANY line of business.

The key is to know how to go about it.

Note however, that no textbook explains how, and no limits exist to what you can do and how. If you need help thinking up ways to apply what I’ve said here, click here to tell me your unique needs.

Final Words: If you are good at what you do, there is absolutely NO REASON why you should not monetize what you know, to earn useful passive income – for LIFE!

No matter your field of specialization or vocation, even if it’s painting or broiler farming, if you’ve been at it a while, there will be knowledge and insights you have, that others lacking your experience and exposure will want.

In other words, apart from the physical products you offer, you should be able to earn useful income, for the long term, selling your “knowledge” (NB: I have been doing this for years selling my Feed Formulation Handbook and other information products listed in my online store).

However, your target audience will NOT know you have what they want, or need, IF you do NOT let them know.

Which brings us to the logical question: How do you let those who need what you know, discover that you have it?

That is what I have tried to explained to you in this article. Hopefully you can take what I’ve told you and run with it by yourself.

Don’t Leave Yourself Defenceless Against Falsehood: Use Smart Technology You Already Own to Protect Yourself (True Story)

[LAGOS] Mr A. “That’s a fat lie! I never said I spoke to your mother on the phone. What I said was that your husband told me what your mother said!!”

Miss. B: “But I heard you clearly. Now that mother has said she has never met or spoken with you, on phone or in person, you’re tying to save face!”

I recently witnessed the above exchange, between 2 individuals, based on discussions they held at a previous meeting – in the presence of a neutral third party.

The truth is, we each owe ourselves a duty, to protect ourselves from being falsely accused. In today’s world, the fast pace at which technology makes things happen, tends to quickly cause potentially irreparable damage of reputations, if care is not taken.

Falsehood, when carefully crafted with malicious intent, can be rapidly propagated with devastating impact on even the most “squeaky clean” personalities.

In the past, it was not so easy to achieve such far reaching impact, with falsehood. Today, tools like Facebook and Twitter, used my massive numbers of people DAILY, puts power in the hands of ANYONE with “news”.

That’s why I find it amazing how so many people fail (or forget) to make FULL use of powerful (often costly) technology tools they own

Especially to PROTECT themselves against abuse, exploitation and other forms of negativity. Today, even the phones we carry around boast amazing capabilities that make doing what I propose quite easy.

For instance, (apart from a simple double SIM Nokia) I mainly use a Blackberry 9015 3G.

Not only do smart phones display or play multimedia, they also boast powerful audio and video recording capabilities.

Indeed mine does EVERYTHING I need. For example, taking photos, recording videos/audios for use in my work (e.g tutorial videos for my Excel-VB software on my Youtube channel), and also updating this blog – even as I travel to/from the borders of countries like Nigeria and Benin Republic.

Yet, I keep coming across (or hearing about) people who emerge from a meeting or gathering arguing about who said (or did not say) “ABCD” or “1234”!

This is why I believe we must all begin to make conscious effort to think ahead, deeply and carefully too, about every single situation we choose to put ourselves in.

Painstakingly study the personalities and character of those we interact with – new acquaintances or old friends – to be reasonably sure of what to expect from them.

In cases where/when we have doubts, it may prove VERY wise to take the precaution of protecting ourselves by finding a way to document the proceedings. That could be on paper, with signatures agreeing to the contents, or via some recording of some sort etc.

A recording can be especially handy in cases where what you see/hear transpiring is something you anticipate one or more relevant parties may choose to deny in future – and which you know can affect you negatively.

In the example I gave above, Miss. B went on to backup her claims about what she claimed Mr. A said by producing a verbatim typed/printed version of what Mr. A had during the previous meeting. She explained that it was a transcript from an audio recording she’d obtained using her smartphoneg as Mr. A was speaking…and offered to play it back!

Without that kind of proof, it will often be a case of one person’s word against another’s…and little progress will be made

Yet, sometimes, such lack of authentic, verifiable proof can land an innocent person in trouble (e.g damaged reputation or even jail)!

The irony is that most people never think it can happen to them – until it does.

I say the above based on experiences I have had, in which malicious lies were told against me by persons MUCH OLDER than me, in conjunction with persons who worked for them. Those experiences made me develop a survival instinct to ALWAYS keep good records (or letters etc) and always seek document what is said during interactions that I feel may be referred to in future.

This is one of the reasons that I have invested in additional smart technology tools, apart from my smart phone, to better take the needed precautions.

And I’ve also briefed a close associate who is a legal practitioner in Nigeria, about my concerns. Indeed, he has periodically coached me on aspects of the law, and how to make them work for one’s self, in terms of rights protection etc.

Most times today’s powerful technology driven news media, gleefully propagate “news” (especially “bad news), putting a person “accused” of doing wrong, at the mercy of the Court of Public Opinion (i.e. COPO).

Sadly, the COPO is subject to all sorts of biases. Very few people can get a “fair hearing” in it!

Examples of possible exceptions will be if an accuser recants…admitting s/he lied…or if a person “accused” of doing wrong produce verifiable evidence (e.g. a recorded video/audio) that demonstrates his/her innocence.

It is my considered opinion, in the light of today’s happenings that – at the risk of acting paranoid – more people need to make deliberate use of the powerful technological tools available to them, to protect themselves in the manner described above.

I have been doing it for quite a while now, and it has proved to be a VERY profitable line of action. Painful past experiences forced me to begin doing so.

Today, not only does it enable me punch holes in attempts to give me a bad name, or exploit me, it also sends a clear message to persons with such naughty intents, that success may NOT come easily for them. Sometimes, THAT can discourage such persons from making YOU a target.

Every smart thinking adult should take precautions to avoid being a defenceless victim of some others person’s “false accusations/lies”, “mistakes”!

It’s unlikely that one can completely eliminate the possibility of it happening. However, diligent preventive action, like that recommened in this piece, can greatly minimize the chances.

Don’t leave yourself defenceless: Use what you have to protect yourself against mean spirited evil doers…and TEACH YOUR KIDS to do so too!

If You Never Stop Believing in the Creator, Haters Will NEVER Stop YOU! (True Story)

On 4th May 2014 my 9 year old spontaneousdevelopment.com was taken over by Aplus.net. But within a few days I moved my content to what I boldly declared would be a SUPERIOR reincarnation at www.tayosolagbade.com.

As at October 2014, I’d surpassed ALL performance levels I achieved with my old domain spontaneousdevelopment.com.

Indeed, with the exception of traffic, when I wrote about this incident about 4 months ago, I was already recording more than double my old newsletter subscription rates, as well as sales leads generation and conversions.

However, website traffic on tayosolagbade.com was still much lower compared to what it used to be on my lost domain, which peaked into May 2014 at just under 2,500 visits per day. And I was feeling quite cool about it back then – especially since I was getting formal emails from advertising companies wishing to partner with me to post ads for my visitors.

Other than that, I’ve never been one to make much of a fuss about traffic.

It goes without saying though that attracting more traffic – especially if it is the right kind i.e. from a pre-qualified target audience – implies more eyeballs on your offers/content.

Over time, this does boost name recognition and search engine visibility as well.

I always knew the traffic to my website – especially the blog – would eventually pick up.

I knew this from past experience. It was just to be a matter of time.

If you’ve been a follower of my writing for a while, you most likely know that I have said that authentic success is always repeatable and reproducible.

And I have always been an advocate and keen practitioner of authentic success achievement.

You see, the key to achieving that kind of success is carefully studying what you do to find out WHY you succeed, then making diligent efforts to do those things that make you succeed, again and again.

Where possible, you will employ improved methods and strategies, to increase your rate and quality of success achievement.

If you do it right, it’s just a matter of time before you climb right back up to the former levels of success and eventually exceed them.

That is exactly what has been happening on this blog over the past month and a half.

In my usual habit of periodically checking to see how things are progressing, I’ve been monitoring the website visitors “Stats” auto generated by the WordPress  plug-in installed in the right panel of this blog.

[NB: I know this is not necessarily a finely accurate indicator of actual traffic. But it serves my needs because, what I use it mainly for is to get a “feel” for the difference (be it an increase or decrease) in visits over time.]

Since May 2014 when I moved my blog to tayosolagbade.com, I’ve had to start from zero visits showing on that widget.

Then for several weeks on end, I saw only single digit counts for Daily Visits. But gradually those numbers began to rise – though only to a few hundreds per day.

Rather than fix my attention on that however, I focused on creating new and varied content daily, as had been my practice with the old domain.

But this time around, I drew from the lessons I’d learnt from over a year of daily making DAILY blog posts.

Not too long ago – on 18th October 2014 – my eye caught an unusually high number of visits (over 3,000) for the day before (i.e. 17th). Also, the visits for that day itself were already above 2,000 even though the time  was still around noon!

It was the first time in a long time that I had bothered to look at the stats.

Weeks before then, I’d seen numbers around the 1,500 to 1,800 visits per day range.

But they never went up to 2,000 visits per day!

So this made me pay attention over the next few days, and that was when I realized how far my efforts had gone.

By the 21st October 2014, I was seeing visits shoot well over 5,000 per day several times, and generally stay above 4,000 for others!

Now, I hasten to note again, that I’m not so interested in traffic. I only discuss this development because it shows another way to measure the impact of one’s blogging efforts.

For me, since I don’t do adverts and do not get paid for “traffic”, it’s not my priority.

However such noticeable improvements provide useful feedback. I was keen to see which aspect of my content was getting that much attention.

So I began checking views per posts to establish some trends.

Eventually, I narrowed down to my weekly newsletter on public speaking and weekly blog posts on entrepreneurship (especially those on farm business), followed by those on parenting, and career development – in that order.

These are some of the categories under which I publish posts on this blog.

I believe most of the visits are from people with interests in those areas, and the experience based stories I often tell resonate with them – hence the growing interest.

Other than that, I cannot think of any other thing that could have generated that much interest.

This brings me to my main reason for recalling the above and writing this piece…

As with everything else in life, the above described positive development has also attracted some negative attention, from mean spirited individuals.

In this case I refer to hackers.

It’s nothing new. Most websites online, especially those deemed to be getting good traffic, ultimately become targets of hacking attempts.

Years ago, I had a spammer hack into my website (on spontaneousdevelopment.com) via a security flaw in the code contained in a CGI script I naively installed. He then used a spam robot to launch massive spam campaigns from my old domain – and that got my hosting account suspended by my webhost for a week at the time, because they assumed I had done it!

More recently, before I lost spontaneousdevelopment.com (my 9 year old domain), I wrote several blog posts sharing security issues I was alerted to by Google via email updates they sent me.

At a stage mid-last year (2013) I even had a case in which efforts were made – over several months – to use negative SEO strategies to discredit my website with Google etc.

For instance, some people went to great lengths to link BACK to different pages on my website from ADULT (i.e. pornographic) websites!

Yep. It happened!

Each time I discovered this during my checks, I would use the DISAVOW tools in Google Webmaster interface to try dislodging them.

But a week or two later, I would discover more simply got added!

Eventually, I chose to ignore them and instead began “fighting back” by focusing on publishing better content MORE often.

Over time, that problem went away. That happened with spontaneousdevelopment.com.

I could be wrong, but it would appear tayosolagbade.com’s success has begun to attract some negative attention…

Something VERY strange and unusual has been happening.

This blog’s website statistics widget (which I earlier showed screenshots of) NOW periodically gets reset to zero!

I don’t know how or why it happens, but it has now happened several times over the past few weeks. And the frequency of occurrence is increasing.

In fact, earlier this afternoon, the abuse level had been taken up a notch:

Instead of just the day’s visit being reset, even the week and month’s visit have also been reset so the numbers now make no sense – see below.

I already know what I need to do, but I share “news” of this development here, only to point out that pursuing success will sometimes attract detractors, and negativity.

Rather than complain, we should always aim to use those attempts to pull us back or bring us down, to MOTIVATE ourselves to do even better than we are already doing.

Remember that if you were not doing well they would not bother about you.

You would be where they WANT you to be i.e. down, and out.

So, if they are coming after you, it can only mean they see that you’re going places – and that bothers them.

Be proud of yourself for achieving that!

Rest assured in the knowledge that as long as you keep your heart pure and your faith in the Creator strong, NOTHING they do can ever stop you.

They can hurt you, but it will only be temporary.

You WILL always bounce back to even greater reckoning if you don’t quit.

And if you keep doing that, your progress will ultimately take you out of their reach.

When Using Spreadsheets – BEWARE! (True Story About How a “Little” Data Entry Mistake Can Damage Business Reports!)

No one asked me to do it. I chose to do it of my own free will, where ever and whenever I saw the need for it.

I did not get any company award for using my spare time, over the course of 7 years, to develop a wide range of spreadsheet automation solutions, to boost data handling and report generation in different departments.

But I did get lots of commendation and recognition, and was rewarded with rapid career advancement opportunities.

It all began one year after I joined the company as a graduate trainee and was redeployed to Benin brewery from Lagos, where I had trained – as a brewer.

Within a matter of days I was soon relating one on one with senior managers on calculating company usage rates and other performance parameters. (I’ve written several articles about it all in the past. They will all be compiled into the book volume I’m now working on).

I had learnt from working with my expatriate training manager, Richard Chambers, to build elaborate, nested formulas into Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet cells . Lotus was the app we used from 1994, when I joined till 2000, when the company moved from Lotus Smart Suite to MS Office).

It was my ability to do the above, and my passion for data analysis and reporting, that helped me quickly come to grips with the complex array of performance indices that needed to be computed daily, weekly, monthly and for the year.

The work involved helped me appreciate why Chambers was developing an automated spreadsheet application to enable fast and reliable reports generation by breweries.

And that made me sensitive to identifying opportunities to do the same when I got to the breweries.

Now, he never sat me down to give me lectures on spreadsheet use. Instead my interest made me spend time watching him at work every day I got the opportunity.

Since I’d already gotten basic computer appreciation training before joining the company, I was able to then tutor myself, to do what I saw him do.

As time went on, Chambers would give me his laptop, and ask me to check the many nested formulas in massive spreadsheets he’d built into the brewery reporting application.

Following my training, Chambers had recommended to his colleague in Benin brewery that I could help them with problems they had with his app. After I did so, news had spread to Lagos, and so I got called up whenever they had problems in Lagos as well.

The above explains why this memo was written to me. As I said, most of this has already been narrated in several of my past articles.

Interestingly, the 2 memos shown on this page relate to that app built by Chambers, for use across the breweries.

Here’s the relevant excerpt from the secretary…

“Please find enclosed a diskette containing the problematic file on Ogba xxxx Monthly Report.

Our observation is that the usage rates column for April has the wrong formula thus producing wrong figures.”

Please assist in correcting the errors detected and where necessary on the file generally.”

Let me describe the application built by Richard Chambers a bit, to give you an idea of what it did and why it was so highly valued…

It enabled generation of a 4 page monthly report that captured everything from volumes outputs to Key Performance Indicators, Costs per product output etc. And it auto generated performance indicator charts, with a summary of materials over used and those underused!

That was really what excited me and made me fall in love with spreadsheet automation. I’d seen senior colleagues with years of experience pore over calculators and brewing books for days to finish month end reports. Then, with Chambers’ application, the same reports were generated in a matter of minutes – following data entry. Just a few clicks of the mouse and it would all be ready to print!

With those 4 printouts, a competent manager could readily deduce what had taken place in a brewery and come to an informed conclusion about its performance.

But that’s NOT why I’m showcasing this exchange I had with a user of Chambers’ app in Lagos at the time,

As you will soon note from reading my response below, I was in the process of handing over as Acting Technical Training & Development Manager (TTDM), when this request came in.

So, as usual I’d had to attend to the request in my free time.

Eventually, I found that rather than having a “wrong formula” as she suggested, the cell in question had a WRONG entry type. More on this below.

In other words, my intention for writing this piece is actually to point out how a little mistake in spreadsheet data entry, can cause major havoc in a business report.

As I said in my report titled “Using MS Excel Solver or Least Cost Feed Formulation Can Be Easy, But Also Dangerous (How to Protect Yourself)”, so many examples abound in the world of big, wealthy companies where one little spreadsheet mistake led to losses running into millions. However, you need not go that far to understand what I’m saying here…

The explanation I gave in my response to the memo – shown below – illustrates a very common mistake the average spreadsheet user is VERY prone to making

…and that includes YOU and ME!

Indeed, some of the most competent users of spreadsheet applications still make this error, so the need to avoid it cannot be over emphasized

The worst thing about this error is that if it happens that you’re very busy or distracted, or the workbook you’re working on is very large, you may NOT discover it for a long time, or at all!

So, what is this mistake I’m yapping about?

I refer to the inadvertent use of an apostrophe (‘) in posting a numeric value, meant for use in spreadsheet calculations.

Here’s an excerpt of my response to the sender of the request memo from Lagos:

[NB: HL = Hectoliters (volume of beer)]

“Upon making corrections to the formulas, I found that “Actual Volume Brewed” entry made on Page 1 (Key Production rations Sheet) i.e. the xxxxx hl, was made as a “label” entry instead of a number – in other words, an apostrophe (‘) was used to precede the number entry, thereby causing Lotus not to recognize it as a numeric entry.

This kind of error should be avoided as it would cause the usage rates not to appear on Page 2, even though the correct formulas will be there (sometimes it could be done inadvertently hence it is advisable to check entries after making them).”

The screen shot below of an example I created, shows 2 tables with the same data being added by a sum formula.

You can see in the formula bar that the “1,000” entry in the second table (on the right) has an apostrophe next to it. As a result the total sum at the bottom is different from that for the first table – even though on the surface both look to be adding the same values.

Now, this is a simplistic example. It’s easy to narrow down to the problem cell when the entries are few. But lots of business users have hundreds to thousands of cells with data. When this kind of wrong entry happens they may NEVER see them, and the affected value could be in millions.

The lesson: when using spreadsheets, beware!

Why You Need “Sales & Marketing Education” – Even If You’re a “Job Seeker” or Employee! (Based on a True Story)

I sat down for one week in 2002 (my start-up year), and wrote what is now my popular Feed Formulation Handbook (photo below). It was based on my knowledge/experience as a key member of the self-funding Student’s Farm Research Foundation (SFRF) in the University of Ibadan. But…my first sale did NOT happen until 2004! (NB: But it came early, and with feedback that led me to build the Ration Formulator software that now accompanies the app).

By way of interest, my decision to write the book came after I read Michel Fortin’s “10 Commandments of Power Positioning” and “Burt Dubin’s Why & How to Get Published”(click that link if you want to know what those guys said that made me decide to write a book).

Holding a Ready-to-Dispatch Print Copy of My Popular Practical Feed Formulation Handbook

It took me just ONE week to type all 65 pages in MS Word – but 2 years to make my first sale!

I know several people who’ve written books but keep waiting to get it published with a big name publisher, to make the “selling” process easier. Well, in my case, I could not be bothered. I went into selling mode as soon as I got it printed out from MS Word onto A4 paper, and spiral bound (more on this later).

Like I said, it took 2 solid years to make my first sale of that book.

I KNEW the subject inside out, having been involved in formulating and compounding rations for livestock we (SFRF) reared commercially on the university’s research and teaching farm.

We never had to beg for patrons to give us money etc.

It was also 100% run by us, the students. We had lecturers as patrons, but they only gave advice. They never interfered.

And we had a bank account, managed by elected executives who ran the foundation’s affairs competently.

I know all this, not just because I was a member, BUT because I was an active one. In fact, within ONE year of joining, I got so active that in my second year as a member (a year before my graduation), I was elected (without my indicating interest in contesting!) as “Supplies Coordinator”.

That executive position enabled me get to see the inner workings of the executive team.

It was impressive to observe the professionalism that undergraduates displayed in their affairs back then. As Supplies Coordinator, I often had to work out the ration formulas or get them from the Project Coordinator (the overall head) and then get the needed funds to visit the feed mill to have them compounded.

I would then return with a pick up van of compounded and bagged feeds to be used for 2 or more weeks. An exciting experience it was!

Sometimes I would be told a particular ingredient was in short supply, and I would have to use my knowledge of ration formulation to choose a suitable substitute ingredient to replace it in the ration without significantly affecting the ration’s formulated balance etc.

You must understand that despite being a “foundation” we were PROFIT focused. So, it was important to get things right as often as possible.

To ensure we could repeat our success, we kept good records. We frequently reviewed the performance of our chicks, layers, broilers, cockerels etc, over time, against different batches of formulated ration fed to them.

That guided us on what ration formula to use in future. And it was that diligence that led us to make healthy profits by keeping our feeding costs low while boosting productivity.

These are the same factors I try to point out to Farm CEOs. They are not complex, but they require diligence to get right. And that was why I wanted to explain in my book, how we derived such cost-effective ration formulas to reap healthy profits.

We did so well, that we were able to organize end of year parties, and even give ourselves gifts of eggs and chicken to take home!

When you have seen and experienced something on such a deep personal level, it’s NOT hard to talk (or write!) about it…

That was why the contents of that book that’s still purchased today by Farm CEOs (and those aspiring) for N8,000.00 came pouring out of me in just ONE week!

But selling the book proved to be much more difficult than writing it!

Once I was done, I went out and printed/spiral bound a copy.

Then I printed flyers and began visiting farm businesses all across Lagos.

Each day, as I found free time from my other business startup activities, I drove to farms in Ipaja, Egbeda, and even as far as Epe, then back to Oko Oba in Agege.

I even went to farm support experts in the Ministry of Agriculture. And YES I did meet with leaders of farmer groups/associations about introducing my book to their members…but nothing ever came of it, other than “Ok. No problem. Call me later, and let’s talk“, then “Ah, let me call you back after I leave the meeting I’m going for now“…LOL!

In essence, I was unable to make a sale!

Stupidly, I tried placing small classified ads in some newspapers and magazines. For 2 years I tried selling it that way.

Even then, NO SINGLE enquiry came in!

Have you ever experienced being SURE that something will work, but having to contend with the reality that it just is NOT working?

Well, that was my experience with my Feed Formulation Handbook in those startup years.

I knew the contents would be cherished by livestock farm owners looking to lower their costs of feeding, and boost their farm output.

And that was why I felt it was best to go straight to them and show them the book: Makes a lot of sense that way doesn’t it?

Well, I found out the hard way, that it was NOT the best way to go about it!

But I did not know what I was doing wrong until the rejections and lack of sales FORCED me to go back and re-read Michel Fortin’s book and Burt Dubin’s articles…

I read a few others too…

Then I sat down and did some deep reflecting on what I had read.

Within a few days the insights began to come to me…in trickles. I realized I had been doing the marketing bit completely wrong.

I had read those write-ups the first time around without INTERNALIZING the most important lesson…

That lesson was that you MUST ESTABLISH authority status FIRST, to make profitable buyers seek YOU out – and so that YOU don’t have to go looking (or is it “hunting”?) for them!

I’ve since learnt those lessons well, and even come up with a few of my own.

The book has been on sale via my online store as a downloadable PDF for years now. I sell it as a spiral bound book, and also email it as a PDF attachment to buyers from within/outside Nigeria who send payment directly to me, instead of using my online store.

All I had to do was change the way I was trying to sell.

I did NOT need to go back to school, or get another degree to make that happen.

Instead, I only had to pick up some Unconventional Sales and Marketing Education – the kind that is NOT taught in schools!

And it so happens that one of the 2 main gurus I learnt what to do from (who is world renowned in his field, and recently turned 80 years) describes himself as a high school drop out!

I have to say though that I was lucky, to have persisted in digging long enough to find out where I was going wrong. Otherwise I would have probably ended up frustrated – or concluded I was a failure…

Now, hat I’m saying here applies to job seekers, as much as it does to those who choose to start their own businesses

Most people often miss this…Sales & Marketing Education – of the right kinds – can often help with Passing Job Interviews!

In other words, with the right experience based sales/marketing “education”, YOU can record better results in searching for jobs than those who lack those abilities.

Among other benefits, your “know-how” will guide you right from when you write and submit your resume, to what you do and say when invited for the job interview!

Look around you, and you’ll see signs that this is true

Carefully observe people as they relate with one another – and you will see that WE ARE all in the business of WINNING one another over.

Maybe it’s to make them like you, or to make them give you something you want. We are all trying to “influence” one another!

Every now and then you are trying to “sell” a point of view or perspective to others, in a way that makes them LEAN towards your line of thinking. That makes them TRUST you more.

And when they trust you more, they are more likely to make decisions in YOUR favour.

This is why companies pay celebrities handsomely to “front” for their products by making them BRAND ambassadors. They know fans will tend to “adopt” something if they see that someone they admire, respect or trust (e.g. a celebrity), ENDORSES it.

So, to succeed, just LEARN how to gain the positive attention, interest, and ultimately TRUST, of those you need to decide in your favour.

It could be a prospective employer, or a potential client…a pretty girl or handsome chap…

Once you can win their “trust”, you will find that those who really need you, or what you offer, will choose you more often, over any others they may be considering.

And that’s what results in success…

In my case, that’s what leads to successful selling of my Feed Formulation Handbook, my other books, in addition to my Excel-VB software as well as other solutions I offer.

Yet, you must remember, that I basically had to go and discover how to succeed like this on my own. I had to re-learn and unlearn MANY things I was taught in school in the process too!

So, here’s my challenge to you: ASK YOURSELF...

Why don’t our schools teach US what we need to EXCEL in the real world?

Why do we so often leave school and then find we need to go and learn so many others things in order to succeed in the real world?

[NB: A possible exception is if we find paid employment that readily suits formal schooling we got. But that’s harder to find these days]

And why is it that when we retire, resign or get kicked out of our jobs, and we start our own businesses, one thing we struggle the most with is how to profitably MARKET whatever we offer???

To take this further, let ME now ask YOU this…

Don’t you think that our schools should be teaching us “sales and marketing that works” LONG before we are due to enter the real world?

Isn’t that what school is meant to do i.e. to EQUIP us with the knowledge and skills to care for ourselves in the real world ?

Even YOU in paid employment right now…these thoughts also apply!

For instance, should you NOT be learning “sales and marketing that works” in preparation for your inevitable departure from your salaried job???

After all, when that happens (e.g. you retire), you may have to “open a grocery shop, or supermarket”…or even start a consulting firm or cookies factory (ALL of which will benefit and do better with effective sales and marketing)!

The implications are however more far reaching that most people readily see…ASK YOURSELF this second set of questions:

What is school teaching MY own kids right now????

What has school BEEN teaching MY own kids since I began sending them there???

Does any of it include the stuff mentioned above, that is likely to determine their ability to succeed by profitably “sell” themselves???

If NO, what can I do to “CORRECT” that deficiency in the “education” my kids are getting???

Now that I’ve gotten you thinking all these (scary?) thoughts, what will you do?

Or should it be what CAN you do?

I say CAN, because there is indeed something you CAN do to change things if your questions reveal the need for that to happen!

Let me refer to myself from this point on…

Here’s what DRIVES me, to keep writing on this theme at every opportunity.

It’s also pushing me to TAKE concrete action to coach my kids to be better prepared for the real world.

Example 1: Their recent Selling Skills Development Project

At the end of August 2014, I made my go out to try marketing their cup cakes, to compare with how they sell to their classmates in school. It was a most revealing experience for them. I shared photos in my Facebook album.

Just before leaving Nigeria during my last visit earlier this month, I got them together to quickly record a video in which they demonstrated the process they follow in making their cup cakes using only a pot and charcoal stove.

I’m now using the photos and video clips in writing a book that we will jointly publish as co-authors, for sale in my online store.

This is a precursor to our forthcoming Quick Start Guide Book titled “How to Cheaply Make Cup Cakes without an Oven or Cooker & Sell Them for Profit” – based on what we do, as a family.

You see, dear reader, EVERY single day that passes, I ask myself: What can I do to SPARE my kids the painful hassle of re-learning – AFTER SCHOOL – in order to succeed in life that I experienced???

Hassles that made me a clueless “job seeker” post graduation.

Humiliating hassles that made me a “clueless” startup entrepreneur for years after I quit my job to run my own business in the real world!

These are HARSH truths, but I use them to keep myself awake to the realities my kids are bound to face, if I leave them to learn based on the SAME system that I passed through!!!

That’s what makes me determined to show them that a better way exists.

In fact, let me share a secret with you: If I have my way NONE of my kids will EVER become an employee.

I’ve told them this already, and we are all agreed on it in principle.

Judging from the way things are going for us right now, we’re already headed in that direction e.g. with our plans for a family based business.

The text on the above page explains how I single-handedly created the market for my apps in Nigeria. Since then, I’ve gone on to win buyers even outside Africa.

In 2002, I became self-employed with the intention of using my IDEAS about spreadsheet automation to inform, educate and possibly inspire others in paid employment

I wanted them to achieve spectacular results like those I recorded while an employee in Guinness (click here to read details in my resume).

During that 7 year period, I basically functioned as an in-house custom spreadsheet software solutions developer. Wherever I worked, if I noticed spreadsheet automation could improve data recording, handling and report generation, I wasted no time in using my skills to make it happen.

But it was an informal role the company never asked me to play – and I never got paid for it. But I LOVED doing it.

Since I never bothered anyone to give me anything to make my ideas work, I rarely encountered any resistance from anyone.

Indeed, due to the fact that the solutions I developed very often addressed areas of pressing need in terms of report generation accuracy and speed, most times they ended up being formally adopted for use.

I succeeded in the above manner because in addition to my ideas, I had the know-how to make my ideas work.

In life, sometimes a person will have an IDEA, but s/he may not have the know-how to implement it successfully. This is why some people need to recruit others with the know-how, to whom they then explain what they believe is possible (in form of their IDEAS).

Henry Ford did that with the enginerrs he employed to build his first car engine. But not all of us will have employees we can challenge in that manner

When you are an independent consultant or solo entrepreneur, it may not be as straight forward as that …

Typically, you will have to reach out to some other person with the know-how.

Sometimes however, such a person (typically called an “expert”), may be limited by training or bias, from seeing what the person with the IDEAS (who can be called the “visionary”) is seeing.

That happened to me a lot in those early years – until I decided to become self-sufficient.

I had ideas about new and better ways spreadsheet automation can be used to solve real life problems. And I was convinced they could work.

So I invested hundreds of hours developing the ABILITY to implement my ideas e.g. building Excel-VB apps to formulate rations for livestock, to automate Payslips Generation, to Manage Poultry Farms etc.

Then I also learnt how to PROMOTE them successfully to the right target audiences for profit.

The above led to my eventual success – and that’s why I argue that to succeed more, it’s best to intelligently acquire the know-how to make your ideas work.

One of the reasons I quit my job in Guinness over a decade ago (despite the great pay and career promise), was that I kept feeling stifled with regard to using my ideas.

I often got spreadsheet automation (and other) ideas I wanted to implement. But due to the limitations imposed by roles and positions, I had to hold back or even abandon them.

It wasn’t that anyone stopped me.

Instead, going further was seldom easy to justify with regard to my job description and formal responsibilities.

Even the spreadsheet automation solutions I’d gotten adopted had initially earned me stinging criticism from colleagues and superiors who failed to see the potential.

The situation made me feel like I needed more room to apply the ideas I had – especially with regard to spreadsheet automation.

It became clearer to me that I would always be limited in terms of how far I could go, if I remained in paid employment. As time went on, a series of other events led me to the conclusion that I needed to be free of the restrictions imposed by a 9 to 5 job, to really explore the implementation of the ideas I had.

Eventually in December 2001, I quit my job and went out to offer my Spreadsheet Automation Solutions to the bigger world.

I soon found out within a few months, however, that even “experts” who taught “Advanced MS Excel” in business schools, did NOT have an inkling of what MS Excel-VB automation could do for business users!

It was a rude awakening: My initial thinking had been that I would easily find willing allies amongst such people – and even those who ran software programming schools – to implement my ideas.

In fact, I even (VERY wrongly) assumed I would meet some who could comprehend what I did with Excel-VB code.

To my astonishment, they often ended up speechless on seeing my apps!

Some were however not impressed – like one Indian faculty head of a popular ICT school in Ikeja, Lagos-Nigeria, who bluntly told me (after I proposed teaching MS Excel-VB there):

“No one will buy software you build with MS Excel – that’s not even real software! Come and register with us to learn real programming!”

I smilingly thanked him and left – knowing that he was wrong, and determined to prove it.

You see, I had the unique advantage of having ALREADY developed such solutions for serious business use in a multinational. So I knew I only had to find the right audience in the real world.

It is on record today that my custom Excel-VB driven software get purchased by buyers from both within and outside Africa (and in case you didn’t know it, Professional Excel Programming has been big business worldwide for decades).

Indeed, my MS Excel Heaven Facebook page has over 60% of its fan base from Asia – especially India!

Here’s another point worth taking note of…

Employees in client companies have approached me to teach them Excel-VB – and some revealed they attended certification courses in the same ICT School I mentioned above!

Yet they ended up working as employees in IT departments of my client companies!

Out of curiosity I asked them why they did not start their own businesses…

Their answers showed they lacked the know-how to monetize their expertise in the programming languages they learnt, by creating solutions they could sell profitably.

Their “school” did not teach them that “small” but crucially important bit!

So you see, they had the knowledge and skill – but lacked the know-how to monetize it!

As a result, the best they could do was to take up paid employment.

That was the difference between me and them.

But unlike them I did NOT have a single ICT certification or qualification.

Yet, I was able to successfully take my self-taught “programming skill” and monetize it.

I continue to do that today(e.g yesterday I published part 1 of 4 in my new Ebook series on Best Practice Farm Business Management, which is a compilation of past articles, and related MS Excel calculation workbooks. Click here for more

The best part is that (unlike when I was in paid employment) I do NOT have to wait for anyone to give me permission to do any of the above.

When I started out, I knew I had to be able to “promote” my ideas effectively. So I began searching for information and education that could help me – such as articles, reports etc.

The Internet proved very useful in this regard.

Indeed the web remains my number one self-development resource till date [Tip: By the way, before you spend ANY money learning ANYTHING, try searching to learn it free online…you’ll be surprised how much money you save!].

Now, since I knew what I was trying to do was a bit unconventional, I focused on finding write-ups that offered insights beyond the usual stuff.

With regard to MS Excel-VB Solutions Development, I actively studied experts online who offered their insights.

One man really stood out for me: Pierre LeClerk.

His easy-to-understand tutorials, and sample workbooks opened my eyes to better ways to offer my solutions in the real world. And he told lots of real life stories based on his decades of experience working with internation clients that inspired me.

His website has tended to morph in name and form over the years. Last time I checked, it was at http://www.excel-vba.com/ – but you may do well to simply Google his name.

Apart from LeClerk, the big fat book titled Professional Excel Development that I purchased online in 2007, helped me take my know-how to a whole new level

On the aspect of “finding buyers”, painful past experience had taught me that placing adverts in print newspapers about my Excel Automation Service was a total waste of time.

Even today, despite the fact that I have created a lucrative niche market for my Excel software, I would still NOT place an advert in any print medium (or indeed online) to sell them.

That’s because conventional “advertising” does NOT work well with solutions like mine!

What I have found works is contained in business promotion write-ups by experts like Michel Fortin, and especially Burt Dubin.

Both preach(ed) the importance of using your writing to set yourself apart from the crowd, in a way that makes those who need anything you want, find your offers compelling.

I quickly devoured every write-up on that theme that I could find from both men.

They were a lot, but when you are HUNGRY to learn, “a lot” will rarely be enough. For instance…

a. Michel Fortin’s “Ten Commandments of Power Positioning” remains a bible or sorts for me.

b. Burt Dubin’s “Why and How to Get Published” taught me to use my writing to profitably promote myself/my works at zero cost.

It is the wisdom from their works that has enabled me successfully grow my income by creatively monetizing my ideas and my know-how again, and again, and again – for YEARS!

I’ve written in more detail about what I learnt from those 2 gentlemen in a past tribute article.

My recommendation is that you study their works, if you want to get similar results.
