Things are getting interesting here in Cotonou. This morning (Tuesday 17th Nov 2015), I had a meeting with 2 joint-owners/partners of a Commercial Export company.
[NB: I just walked in and up the stairs to their office – after reading signs they put up that told me my offer might interest them) and asked to see the CEO]
What started with guarded responses, quickly evolved into a lively discussion in which I fielded questions they threw at me (in French).
30 minutes later, both men were nodding and smiling in contentment, as we shook hands, having agreed to meet tomorrow morning to discuss what it will take to sponsor my FREE flagship micro-business start-up coaching clinic titled “How to Make Drinks You Can Sell, from Peels of Pineapples and 9 Other Fruits.”

***ABOUT MY PINEAPPLE PEEL BASED DRINKS AND CAKES***
In 2013, I developed a technique for making ready-to-sell low cost drinks at home, using Pineapple PEELS while living in Calavi, outside Cotonou. One of the students on the university campus named the drink “Boisson Tayo” (i.e. French for “Tayo’s Drink).
It got me noticed at the Nigerian embassy, and led to the head of the English department in Benin’s CEBELAE (a Professor who met me at the embassy) insisting on driving me to his house hours away in Kasato (another town AFTER Calavi).
There I was treated to a sumptuous meal, and then asked to show his wife and kids (undergraduates) what I was doing with the peels they routinely threw away.
I’ve since taught my kids to make the drinks and cakes, and they have successfully sold them.
Indeed they are able to make and sell the products with no supervision, confirming my claim that this is a good formula for a micro business that anyone can start with very little money: Waste fruit peels as a zero cost key ingredient for easily reproducible low cost drinks and cake making!.

In this issue I share insights I gained from using a self-marketing method based on implementation of 12 ideas for generating a reliable stream of new client enquiries, as discussed in an article written by AWAI’s Steve Roller (Read Steve’s awesome article at www.awaionline.com/2011/09/how-to-increase-your-harvest-of-new-clients).
In it, he recommended implementing ONE idea per month, over a year, then “Calculate the return on each and adjust accordingly.” I end my experience based analysis by suggesting you adopt Steve’s 12 ideas for use in your marketing in the incoming year…”and beyond”.
This analysis is based on a downloadable mind map I’ve created, that distills the wisdom from Steve Roller’s article into a diagrammatic one-page format (see below) for easy reference.

I’ll start by saying that I was already doing some of the things Steve recommended. But his article woke me up to the need to be more results-focused/creative and less mechanical in using them. A few months after reading it in September 2011, I’d reinvented my online presence, to reflect my new focus – and a year later, I was fully engaged in “doing it”.
In April 2013, I relocated to Benin Republic and put even more effort into “doing it”, to achieve my goal of generating more income via passive channels from sales of my products and services.
Those who have followed my writing since that time will know that I’ve shared many stories about how I now earn over 80% of my income online based on the steady generation of sales leads by what I call my Web Marketing System (WMS).
Steve’s article was one of the key resources I studied, to gain the practical insights I used to improve my WMS to get the great results I enjoy today.
In his article, Steve said he would suggest “NO particular order” for implementation of the 12 ideas…
However, the results I’ve gotten from making practical use of them to find new clients for myself over the years convince me that one WILL reap optimal returns by:
1. implementing Steve’s 12 ideas in close to the order I’ve numbered them in my mind map.
2. implementing MORE THAN ONE of Steve’s 12 ideas simultaneously.
I will now explain what I mean for EACH of the 12 ideas…
Note that I’ve grouped them into 2 categories
Group A is what I call “The Foundation” and includes those ideas from Steve’s list that I numbered from 1 to 6:
If you want to generate sales leads with less effort, using less money and time, ensure you start doing ALL 6 as quickly as possible in the order they appear and/or simultaneously.
1. Write articles to establish your credibility
I’ve been doing this since 2005
2. Write a free report for your website.
I’ve been writing FREE downloadable reports for my target audiences since 2006
I published my Self-Development Bible as a paperback in 2005. Since then I’ve written other print as well as digital books which sell from my online store at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/sdaproducts
6. Guest blog
Steve is right. Getting published on high profile blogs can help you build name/brand recognition, and attract potential clients.
But to get taken seriously by a blog owner, you need to have some writing you’ve done, to SHOW him/her.
When you have a website/blog brimming with quality original content penned by you, plus free downloadable reports on your specialty, a newsletter, and a FREE chapter to a book you published, it will be much easier for blog owners to BELIEVE that having a Guest Blog by you can add value to their brands!
By the time you send you offer in, and they check you out, YOU will have less “work” to do convincing them. That’s what happened when I reached out to editor at Africabusinesscommunities.com, and I got 5 of my Farm Business articles published there.
Some clients who purchased my Farm Support software told me they found me through my Guest Posts on that website.
Group B includes those ideas from Steve’s list that I numbered from 7 to 12 in my mind map:
One or more of the above Group A ideas plays a role(s) in making the prospect take notice of you and/or get him/her into “buy-mode”. Take it from me when I say they can ALL be started up within ONE month. You can either do it yourself, or engage someone to do it for you.
Without putting the Group A based foundation in place, trying to implement the ideas in Group B (discussed below) will not go as well as it can.
Let me now give examples to explain my thinking with regard to each of the ideas in Group B in relation to those in Group A.
7. Send out a very narrowly targeted direct mail piece.
When you send out a direct mail piece, you want to give yourself the opportunity to achieve optimal impact with your offer. That will however be a function of the believability of the message you send.
Having Group A in place is a powerful way to achieve that. Without that foundation, or with a haphazard version of it, your target audience may find it hard to buy-in to your direct mail offer.
Put yourself in their shoes, and I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.
9. Join some type of business networking group, or start your own.
When you meet someone at a networking event, and chat for a while, you’ll probably exchange call cards, other contact details. Chances are good that at some point later, s/he’ll get around to Googling your name, to see what s/he can learn about you – possibly with regard to the service you offer.
What s/he sees in the Google results page, especially what turns up when the web links are clicked can make or mar your chances.
Group A’s 6 components, diligently implemented, can make you look as credible, and competent as you want him/her to know you are.
The result would be that s/he would end up giving you a call to take the relationship further. When you don’t have that kind of foundation, and you go networking, you’ll have MORE work to do to convince prospects to hire you.
10. Partner with professionals who have complementary services
I’ve not had much success doing this, but I continue to explore viable opportunities to do it. Having said that, teaming up with Burt Dubin to promote his speaker-mentoring products to experts across Africa has exposed me to persons who nursed interest in his solutions as well as some of mine. Some have gone on to become clients.
It goes without saying that having Group A components in place played a very important role in making that happen.
11. Join a trade association related to your niche.
What I’ve said in 9 above, applies here.
You will be joining with a purpose in mind. The question is what have you put in place to enable you maximize the opportunities that present themselves during your interactions with others in that association.
Having Group A in place gives you potential talking points you can subtly use to open sales conversations.
You could say the following to a prospect:
“I notice you have lots of knowledge and experience that can help others in your field. Have you ever considered writing a book based on your expertise, to use in your business marketing? My book on <xyz> has opened doors to new clients/speaking opportunities for me. If you lack the time or training, I offer a ghost-writing service for busy experts that you can use. “
Since my Group A elements include FREE chapter preview downloads, and generic offer PDFs on my website, if the prospect indicates interest in learning more, I simply offer to email him links to them.
Putting Group A in place implies doing a lot of the thinking up front and creating content that will lead your prospect to the end of the sale process.
12. Give a speech monthly related to your specialty.
Even if you’re offering to speak for FREE, potential attendees and meeting planners will want to be sure that coming together to listen to you will be a worthwhile experience.
So, don’t just go giving out flyers offering to speak. Others may be doing the same thing. Ensure that what you give out leads to other stuff you’ve setup that can help the decision maker pick you over others.
If you have the Group A foundation in place, including a video of yourself speaking, and a Speaker One Sheet(s) they can view, whatever you say in your interactions, will carry enough weight to get you invited to speak.
When you meet a potential client, it is not often that you get to walk away with cash in your hands or a signed cheque you can cash the very same day…
Quite often it tends to take a while before you both agree on what you can do that would be worth paying for.
What I’ve learned working from a socioeconomic environment, in which trust is not easy to establish is that having Group A in place can dramatically diminish the work you have to do to gain trust, and close sales!
Think about it and you’ll see what I mean.
Most clients/buyers I’ve won over in and out Africa basically came to me 80% convinced about hiring me, or buying from me – after getting exposed to my Group A foundation. In the course of interacting with them, I then did enough to get them to 100% – and close the sale.
When some were not so sure (maybe at 50%), the Group A foundation I had in place was what I intelligently deployed (in conjunction where applicable, with Group B ideas) at various stages of interaction, over time, till they bought..
Summary: My numbering of Steve’s ideas does not mean EACH idea has to be implement strictly in the order it appears.
There is plenty of room for overlap. But my point is some need to happen, or be in place, before others are implemented, to ensure optimal returns.
In particular, ideas 1 to 6 in Group A need to be implemented before any major effort is put into implementing 7 to 12.
Steve said: Write articles to establish your credibility – and he is SO right!
I read somewhere that article marketing is a timeless marketing strategy. My experiences since I began doing it in 2005 confirm it’s true.
Article marketing continues to be a truly rewarding endeavour for me. I actually consider it to be the most important of ALL the 12 ideas Steve listed.
WARNING: In writing for marketing, avoid fretting about content thieves. Focus instead on adding useful value to what exists!
Some experts are not keen on using their writing for marketing because they fear exposing their good quality and original content to possible theft
I can confirm that I’ve had to call out some website owners for using my articles from Ezinearticles.com without including my byline, or even my name.
There will always be content thieves lurking around.
But not doing it at all is like to hurt you more – because then few potential clients will ever get to KNOW just how awesome your writing content can be.
So, forget the negatives and focus on the countless positives that can accrue to you.
On the flip side, YOU must also watch yourself. Never be guilty of abusing the work of others.
Give due credit. Always.
PS: Note that I have never met with Steve Roller, or even interacted with him in any way.
In other words, he probably does not even know I exist.
But his ideas have helped me take my business forward. That’s why I created my mind map to share Steve’s wisdom – visually – with others who may need it, as we approach yet another new year of business.

I was then based in Calavi – a town outside Benin Republic’s commercial capital – Cotonou. In that email, he’d complimented me on the work I was doing online – through which he’d found me.
He later signed up for my newsletter. After some weeks we had a few Skype phone conversations in which we shared details of our backgrounds and experiences from our past lives. We struck it off right from the start – the synergy was almost palpable!
As time went on, he expressed an in interest in connecting with Burt Dubin (whose speaker mentoring products and services I promote), and that further deepened our relationship.

That PDF’s introduction section explains why I go to such lengths to transcribe video recordings to text version. But briefly here I’ll say my purpose is to distill ready–to-use wisdom from experiences shared by authentic achievers, into a format that others can learn from – regardless of their limitations.
You see, watching a 1 hour video on Youtube, even for people who have FREE Internet, may not always be convenient. Also, even when it’s convenient, or you have the time to watch it, not everyone will find it easy to EXTRACT useful lessons from what they see/hear in the video, to improve their lives.
As a Performance Improvement Specialist, I have a passion for studying people and processes, and identifying why one person may do better than another person, when both are exposed to similar preparation and opportunities. The insights I’ve gained from doing the foregoing, over the past 2 decades have taught me to offer useful information and education to those who need it, through as many different channels, and in as many different formats as possible.
People differ greatly in their styles – and rates – of learning, as well as in their abilities to apply what they learn to productive ends.
I believe this exceptional Nigerian expert’s success story perfectly illustrates the point I’m making…
Despite myriad obstacles he had to face in his formative years, right into his early 20’s, he doggedly explored a variety of learning avenues, to find a path to the success he wanted. [NB: You can read the story here – &/or download the PDF]
It is my considered opinion, that a major reason why his success is so noteworthy is that his journey was far from smooth, and involved lots of interruption. Not many people who do what he does (as a speaker, business coach and marketing consultant), had to pass through similar trials before arriving.
The success and recognition he enjoys today proves that he both learned his lessons well, and also developed the ability to apply what he learned to excel in his chosen vocation – regardless of the adversity he faced.
THAT, is what makes him exceptional – and it’s the reason why he’s been chosen to host a BCTC seminar, which is the first of its kind in the history of the Chambers!
Incidentally, apart from having Skype phone conversations with him, I have also listened several times to recordings of Efe delivering his trademark speeches to CEOs.
Without any attempt at exaggeration, I can confirm that he is a truly effective speaker. In other words, I share the sentiments expressed by those interviewed in the above video about him!

All it takes is to set challenging goals that you then pursue vigorously, on a never-ending-basis. Then use the web – creatively and intelligently – to share your work with colleagues and potential clients/buyers in other parts of the world.
Sooner than later, they’ll begin to take positive note of you.
A branded Facebook business page (integrated with a response-generating website/blog) is a proven way: Potential clients (local or international) will often take what they see on YOUR page as indicative of value you have to offer.
If you use your marketing platform right, it will make potential clients take notice of, then connect with – and ultimately buy from – you.
My point is you can get noticed (and paid) for what you do, by people OUTSIDE your immediate/local market – who fit your target audience profile.
This is something I have done – and continue to do – myself, in the multiple disciplines I’m engaged in as a multipreneur.
I am regularly contacted online by – and have phone conversations with – enquirers from within and outside Africa (Uganda, Namibia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Canada, UK, Philippines, Australia, India, Israel, Pakistan, Argentine, Mexico etc), regarding products and services I offer (especially my growing range of Farm Business Solutions).
Every now and then, some go on to send payment to me from their respective countries…
That’s why I know what I propose works. I have countless stories I share with my clients and audiences on how it has worked for me for YEARS.

ONE EXAMPLE: Just yesterday (Sunday 1st Nov. 2015), I met for the first time with a Farm CEO – Mr. Tunde O.<surname removed for privacy>- who bought my Ration Formulator Software and Handbook bundle (for N20,500.0) about 4 months ago.
That happened at a Feed Mill in Oko Oba area of Agege, owned by Engr. Olopade (an elderly but very knowledgeable man) – who I’d also NEVER met before that day!

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know I’ve been connecting with past buyers of my Feed Formulation Products so they can attend my on-demand FREE workshop
But it’s not been easy to put things together.
Many of those who’d indicated interest had chosen widely differing dates, making it virtually impossible to get the minimum of 5 persons required to justify doing a run of the group training/workshop.
So, I decided to offer them the opportunity to come down on an agreed date for a one-on-one session (still FREE) and/or to buy my Home Study Feed Formulation Video Tutorials DVD.
Most of those who’d indicated interest chose the DVD option. One is yet to get back to me.
But Tunde O.
made it clear he wanted the one-on-one option, as well as the DVDs.
So we agreed Saturday (31st October 2015) which he’d chosen.
However, when I called him on Friday (30th October 2015) he told he was at the time in Portharcourt, and would be taking the next flight back to Lagos, but that he had an unexpected change of plans, and so would not be able to make it for Saturday.
In case you wonder, we were trying so hard because he’d told me he would be going on an overseas trip (he’s a Geophysicist and runs the farm part-time with help from relatives and trusted hands), so this FREE window was the best shot we had – and we’d been planning this for close to a month!
Knowing that, I was not ready to let all our hard work go to waste…:-))
We talked a bit more, and eventually agreed to try and see if we could meet for a short version of the session on Friday by 1 p.m. Our projection that his 45 minute flight would end before then if it took off on schedule.
Unfortunately, by the time his flight arrived from PortHarcourt, where he’d gone for an event, it was already 3p.m – and we were not too keen on braving Lagos traffic to the Oko Oba end, where the feed mill to be used as venue is.
So I began making calls to CEOs of feed mills in the area to ask if they opened Sundays.
They all said NO.
I’d known that would be the likely answer…
But I’m always a never-say-never kind of person. So I began calling feed mill CEOs to ask if they would consider opening briefly & explained our peculiar need.
It took almost all day as I did other work, but last night at 10p.m, I finally reached one CEO (Engr. Olopade) who graciously accepted to personally open the feed mill for us at 4p.m the next day – Sunday, since the mill would naturally NOT be open for work, and the staff would not be around!
I recall telling Tunde – and Chuks – another past buyer that I’ve met once that I’d resolved to find a way to thank Engr. Olopade, for being so flexible minded and obviously humble/unassuming. His kind are truly rare in my experience.
It might interest you to know that I called up to 15 CEOs whose numbers I got from online directories, but NONE said YES to my outrageous proposal…
My never-say-die attitude kept me going despite all the blunt refusals I got from each person I spoke with.
THEN I got to Engr. Olopade…whose mobile number I also picked off an online directory of feed mill business CEOs in Oko Oba…and the story changed…!
It was about 10p.m when we spoke. I requested that he allow me use his Feed mill for a one-on-one training for Tunde, explaining the peculiar circumstances.
Note however that before I called him, we had NEVER heard of one another, talk less of speaking.
In other words were 3 total strangers agreeing to meet!
With the exception of Tunde, who had at least seen photos of me from visiting my website, I and Engr. Olopade had no idea what the person we were to meet looked like.
In fact a funny incident occurred when Tunde parked his car at the Abattoir bus stop outside the Police Station, to wait for me.
When I got there, I began trying to call his number to ask where he was parked.
But I kept getting a busy signal. So I had to redial repeatedly.
While doing that my eyes periodically caught an air conditioned blue Honda parked just beside me with a tall heavyset man at the wheel, and a female passenger next to him.
But each time I dismissed the idea of knocking on the window to ask if it was him, because I could not see him holding a phone to his ear. It was only when my call went through and I told him where I was standing that he looked round and our eyes met.
Then we knew! (Hint: Apparently he’d been using the hands-free feature during the previous call he’d been on!)
Long story short, 24 hours later, we were talking like old friends inside Engr. Olopade’s (he’d driven down in a 4-wheeler) feed mill – which turned out to be equipped with a VERY impressive modern milling system, complete with an extruder etc.
Before leaving, Tunde had taken Engr. Olopade’s business card, promising to get in touch (regarding milling his feeds there), while I stayed back to discuss several areas of potential collaboration with our host.
Believe it or not, we (Engr. Olopade and I) were together for well over an extra hour, sharing experiences and exploring possibilities!
See how the power of intuition and intelligent use of the web can combine to connect you with your target audience of buyers and potential partners??!!
Among other reasons, I share this story as an example of how not giving up/keeping an open mind/thinking outside the box can enable one make progress to achieve one’s purpose when it seems most unlikely.

This story also illustrates the importance of getting your business online via as many platforms as possible.
If Engr. Olopade had NOT put up his company’s details on the directory I would never have found him.
It enables me earn over 80% of my income via online channels, selling my unique range of 100% original products/services.
Now I’m going to be helping Engr. Olopade setup and promote a branded Facebook business marketing page – at NO CHARGE to him – as my way of saying THANK YOU to him, for his generosity.

What you see happens because of the Web Marketing System (WMS) I use.
But getting found is just one way a WMS helps.
A well implemented WMS goes further to make you pop up again and again, when varying search strings are used, related to YOUR offering! That process in which you show up repeatedly then makes the “searcher” believe you are likely to be the one with the most value-adding solution s/he needs.
EXAMPLE [TRUE STORY]: Last night I got an email from Yemi A.<surname removed for privacy> a Farm CEO who’d contacted me via my website about my Ration Formulator back in August 2014 (i.e. over a year ago).
I was in Cotonou (my base) at the time and we’d spoken on phone for quite a while. In the course of our discussions, we found we had something in common. Around 1991, he’d worked in Guinness Benin Brewery, with a senior colleague of mine – Sola Adeniran.
I however arrived as a Graduate Trainee Brewer in 1995, by which time he – the Farm CEO – had left the company. So we never met. But Sola was still around and we ended up working together on several occasions. So as we ended our phone conversation, I responded to his query about how I got into software development, despite lacking an IT background, by telling him to ask Sola.
In order to help him understand, I explained that I enjoyed rapid career success for 7 years in Guinness mainly due to the recognition I got for developing custom applications to replace manual reporting systems, using Spreadsheet programming.
So, when we spoke on phone this morning, the CEO told me he’d attended an event 6 months ago with Sola. I did not ask, but I sensed he must have asked Sola. But this guy was NOT fully satisfied.
After I’d answered all his technical questions about my software, and feed formulation (note that I was – as is my usual habit – the one calling him – the enquirer – at my expense), he asked me to tell him how my app compared with others in the market.
At this point I laughed, and gently teased him saying: Why don’t you just Google “feed formulation software” – I’m sure you’ll get answers readily to that question. You see, I don’t compete. I simply tell people what I offer and leave them to explore available alternatives to make up their minds.
He replied that he’d tried Googling but most of what kept coming up included links to me, which was why he’d come back to me via the last emails we’d exchanged since August 2014 i.e. over a year ago.
That, right THERE, was proof of the power of a Web Marketing System when used the right way on a consistent basis!!
I told him I could not help him any more than I had, and explained that others had found me the same way – including international organizations.

[Video] Graduate Teacher Who Could Not Read Her Own Certificate, Nabbed by Gov. Adams Oshiomole At a Screening Session to Unmask Teachers With Forged Credentials.
The 1st time I watched this video of Gov. Oshiomole and the teacher who could not read her own certificate at a screening event monitored by the former, I truly was NOT surprised.
Why?
Because for years in the course of coaching staff of some client companies to use software and websites I built, I’d noticed a shocking deficiency in reading, comprehension and writing skills in many of the individuals assigned to understudy me.
And this despite the fact that they readily brandished “certificates” as proof that they’d successfully completed programs in various disciplines.
I believe the reason we don’t often “see” these quacks till they get exposed as happened in Edo state is that we, Nigerians, often refuse to employ critical thinking.
Take that teacher’s case for instance. Everyone seems so focused on her. We seem to have all missed the fact that she could not have perpetrated this fraud alone!
For instance, some person must have interviewed and recruited her, before giving her a PAID teaching position. Who was that person, and what criteria did s/he use?
I argue that the recruiter(s) most likely was(were) an insider(s) who helped her get in.
There’s more…
According to reports, she’d been teaching for 20 WHOLE years!
That means she must have had colleagues, and bosses, to whom she reported to during that LONG period of time (??)
Are we to believe none of them noticed this serious deficiency she had in all that time?
Here’s what I think:

But it’s likely many were no different from her. Each one had something(s) to hide.
Either that or she found a way to “bribe” them in cash or kind to keep quiet about it.
But what about the parents of the kids she must have taught?
One would imagine that one or two parents would have noticed inadequacies e.g. from checking through assignments given to the kids/talking to the kids, and even interacting with the teacher.
Yet, if we’re to believe what the reports say, in all of 20 years no parent ever complained!
Is that even possible?
I don’t know about you, but I’m tempted to believe it is…and here’s why…
Olusegun Adeniyi’s THIS DAY newspaper piece offers useful but shocking insights gained from his participation in the Nigerian Breweries Limited sponsored Competition to Choose the Best Teacher in Nigeria.
He mentioned how he, along with Prof. Pat Utomi, and other judges had to read through forms filled by contestants, which contents reflected poor reading, comprehension and writing skills on the part of many of the teachers.
Not just that, he said they learnt from interviewing the teachers that some schools were “miracle centres” where students routinely passed WAEC exams even when they knew nothing.
Using the above teacher’s story, you should be able to deduce how that is possible.
Simply put, teachers like the one Oshiomole found incapable of reading, would be the ones teaming up, often with similarly-minded parents (who probably also bought their own certificates), to cheat in the exams!
Yesterday, my 16 year old son and I visited a gentleman whose 6 month manual typewriting course he (my son) had attended at weekends back in 2011.
It turned out he’d suffered a broken ankle 3 months ago, courtesy of a hit-and-run Okada who ran into him from behind as he was walking along the street. As a result, he had been hobbling around on crutches.
We talked about that accident, and the decayed values that made the culprit fail to stop, after causing such injury to another.
Then our friend began to regale us with shocking anecdotes to illustrate just how bad things are – based on what he sees in attending to people who come to enroll for his training or to pay for typing services.
2 examples he gave held my interest:
a. A young lady who brought a computer forged copy of a well known university’s degree certificate and asked him to help her type in her name, so she could make copies to submit to a recruiting company.
He declined and tried to dissuade her. She told him off and went elsewhere to get it done. A mutual friend later told him that she got the job, as she had insiders who helped her beat the screening despite her forged papers.
b. In another incident, something similar to the above happened, but this time it was a forged NYSC certificate the individual wanted to have a name typed on!
According to our friend, his is just one of many examples that occur regularly.
No wonder we keep seeing school leavers and graduates who can’t defend their qualifications.
But here’s why/how this situation affects most of us NOT involved in these acts…without our knowing it…!
You see when such people with forged papers get into decision making positions, they will naturally feel threatened by competent others (e.g. YOU, or your kids), and block their entry into the organization.
Instead they will seek to recruit those who are like them, who will NOT come in and then turn around and call them out for being “incompetent”.
We see this already in public (and some private) sector organizations where appointment of misfits into positions, and mediocrity in work processes seems to be the order of the day.
Today, these kinds of people are often in the majority, while those not like them are the minority, and therefore an endangered species!
That’s why I argue that for every one of these crooked people that gets caught, there will often be several others hoping not to get noticed.
The following Yoruba proverb illustrates the point I’m making here.
“Eni ti won ba mu ni Ole” – Yoruba proverb
Translation: It is only the person who gets caught that is called a thief.
And I mean even right NOW, today, as I type these words!
Olusegun Adeniyi’s article based on observations from an event completed less than a month ago, confirms it. The video of the teacher who could not read went out last year – so, in all that time, not much has changed…!
If we let this continue, there may come a day when they’ll outnumber us nationally, and vote one of them as PRESIDENT. Then we’ll have to watch him/her struggle to read his/her speeches at public functions (locally and overseas) – just like that Edo state teacher did!
As an expert-who-speaks, YOU CAN use the Edo state teacher’s story to challenge yourself to improve
Apart from your speaking skills as an expert, your reading comprehension/writing skills also play a crucial role in your ability to demonstrate competence.
It’s possible the Edo state teacher was/is well spoken. If so, THAT could explain why outsiders (e.g. parents) who met her did not find her out.
They could have assumed that since she spoke well, she could also read as well.This is the same thinking those YOU relate with as an expert-who-speaks may adopt!
Question: Do you know YOUR reading speed?
If YES, what is it?
Tony Buzan in his book on Speed Reading estimates that most adults who pass through formal schooling read at about 200 to 300 words per minute on the average.
He however points out that THAT is not enough: For productive reading, at least twice that speed is needed.
Thankfully, you can google “Learn Speed Reading” to learn techniques you need (like I did to become able to read over 400wpm).
Here’s why your reading speed matters…
As an expert who is also a knowledge provider, your rate of learning affects your output.
If you’re a slow reader, that means it will take you longer to get through written material you need to read, in doing your research or reviewing client materials.
You may have to plough through large volumes of written material, in paper form, or on your PC screen.
Slow reading speed could cause you to delay others who need your feedback to progress their own jobs.
In relating with a client representative, that could put you in an embarrassing situation where the affected individual is forced to complain to his/her boss that you’re holding him/her back!
Apart from reading, your “writing”/”TYPING” skill/speed also comes into play.
What is your typing speed? Do you know?
Estimates have it that the average adult types about 40 words per minute.
I’d say aim to do at least 50 wpm and every now and then, push yourself to increase by 10 wpm till you can do up to 80 wpm or more, which I exceed when in flow (Typing Tutor software can help you with this).
If you’re slow in writing/typing it can limit your ability to function at a higher level of productivity e.g. when a client requests for a written “proposal” or some other document that you have to put together.
Unless you have no deadline to deliver to, or your workload is so low there’s enough time to take it slow, being slow in writing/tying can do you in!
Final Words: To attract, win and serve more – and higher profile – clients, demonstrating proficiency in your reading/writing skills (in addition to your speaking skills), will be key…
Depending on the market you serve, and the emphasis placed on competent use of the language, higher profile clients (e.g. decision makers in corporate organizations) will expect you to possess a decent mastery (spoken and written) of the language of communication.
Apart from speed, writing proficiently (using correct grammer, spelling and tenses) also matters.
So, anything you send to a client will be read with that expectation in mind. Meeting it can dramatically boost his/her rating of you, leading to repeat business, referrals etc.
It goes without saying that no one is infallible or perfect, so one may miss the mark once in a while.
However, those should be few and far between in occurrence – if at all.

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – No. 215: Don’t Be So “Nice” That You Appear Incompetent (Hint: Sometimes It Pays to be Initially “Difficult” So as to be Successful Later)
When it comes to DELIVERING desired results, LOWERING YOUR STANDARDS (or COMPROMISING) in order to avoid being called “difficult” by clients (or representatives) unwilling to honour their end of the bargain, can end up making you look incompetent.
In this write-up I explain why doing the above to please others is never worth it, IF you want authentic and lasting success.
Some people always want to cut corners, or give too little, if possible nothing, to get ALL they want!
In today’s NIGERIA, a person can easily get labelled wicked if s/he REFUSES to allow or tolerate wrong behaviour from those who report to him/her or who s/he has to LEAD.
The problem is widespread, and begins right from the schooling system, from primary to tertiary level.
For instance, today the following can earn a teacher/lecturer the label of “WICKED”:
1. Insisting students meet minimum required attendance, or get penalized.
2. Insisting students score required passing grade for a credit course, or repeat/carry over.
3. Refusing to entertain “pleas” that a student whose performance falls below cut-off level be allowed to advance to the next class.
Like I said, it’s everywhere…even on the Nigerian roads, the traffic offender thinks the same way. S/he will plead in the same manner after DELIBERATELY jumping the lights and getting caught.
They always believe they can plead (and if necessary BUY) their way out of any trouble. Quite often they also find enforcers willing to let them do just that.
In Nigeria, when people “BEG” you to bend the rules for them and you agree, they say “God Bless You”. When you refuse, they call you “WICKED”!
I argue that it becomes impossible to ensure the required high standards are met, and the DESIRED RESULTS achieved when we fail to enforce rules put in place to make that happen!
For instance, how do we turn out competent medical surgeons if we let those who fail tests designed to test “competence” to advance to the next class…because we don’t want to be WICKED, or we want to HELP?
The truth is that there are times when the best way to HELP people will be to make them pay the price for their wrong doing.
We need to challenge people to put in the needed effort to QUALIFY to move to the next level in pursuit of a reward they want.
The reason Nigeria has become home to “mass mediocrity” is because too many people are UNWILLING to EARN merit-based access to rewards they seek…AND too many people in decision making positions are WILLING to BEND the rules to let such people have their way.
We see the result in the pitiful state of our sports today, compared to our rich past!
Save for some individuals who are excelling in their fields using raw talent and drive (e.g. Table Tennis), our Sportsmen and Women today give us little or no reason to cheer.
Many people are getting picked to represent us through corner-cutting, and it’s preventing the BEST talents that we really have from getting to represent us.
It’s the same problem in other areas.
Merit gets second place most times in decision making when it matters most.
Until we change this harmful and shameful culture, Nigeria will continue to crawl in fields of endeavour where she should be SOARING high above other nations, in the skies of achievement.
I’ve been called DIFFICULT, UN-REASONABLE, RIGID (or even WICKED!) quite a bit in Nigeria…and I have NO PROBLEMS with it!
That’s because I do NOT tolerate mediocrity in any guise or form, and I constantly demand EVERYONE around me to pull their weight, and earn the right to access rewards they seek.
My kids will tell you this is true – and like I’ve told their grandparents, the results WILL be obvious in the abilities they manifest for the world to see in the VERY near future.
In the meantime, if YOU are a parent, I urge you to entrench a similar culture in your home, so your kids get the best preparing to excel in the real world.
They will arrive adulthood with the right mental attitude and discipline to make the most of opportunities that come their way!
Question: How do you serve clients successfully?
Answer: By delivering the results YOU promised them and which they agreed to pay YOU for.
It’s VERY unlikely that you can successfully serve clients by being NICE to them, while failing to do the above i.e. delivering what you promised!
This is why it’s crucially important that you avoid making the dangerous mistake of LOWERING your standards to please any client.
Let me explain using a personal example:
In developing and implementing Web Marketing Systems (WMS) for clients, I sometimes get asked to meet with and/or give a talk to decision makers (who pay to have that happen) on what I am to do for them.
During such interactions I spell out what I will do for them, as well as what they need to do on their own part, to meet me halfway, so that the solution works as expected.
But I don’t just stop at telling them…
When work starts, if/when I identify that a client is going off track in terms of delivering what s/he has agreed to enable me progress the work (e.g. sending me a profile, or articles to use in creating new content), I firmly, but politely remind him/her noting problems likely to occur.
Trying too hard to be “nice” with a client (or representative) failing to give you what you need to do YOUR work, can end up making YOU look bad at the end of the day.
How?
Myriad possibilities exist.
For instance, in order to be “nice”, you may say nothing about the delays to those who need to know. The problem is that the culprit could later turn around – when eye brows are raised, and say YOU did not ask/remind him/her – effectively blaming you!
So don’t take the business of being nice too far: You must think and act like a true professional at all times – IF you want the client to respect you.
Learn to assert yourself to get your work done.
No one is going to give you a pat of the back for failing to deliver. Remember that you’re getting paid!
If the decision maker has given you the go ahead, and some person(s) assigned to work with you are delaying things, find a way to set them right before they make you look bad.
If they fail to change despite your best efforts, get the relevant decision maker involved.
THAT could get you labelled “WICKED” by any naughty mediocre minds involved. However, my experiences indicate that such a situation will only be temporary.
You see, taking such decisive action WILL often enable you deliver a solution works, just like you promised. When that happens, you’ll look good to decision makers WHO TRULY MATTER!
All others will simply fall in line and join in applauding you from them on!
Take it from me. I’ve been there countless times in paid as well as self-employment…
…as a shift manager leading over scores of men to achieve daily targets on bottling lines; as a shift brewer leading a dozen operatives to meet daily brewing targets; as Technical Training and Development Manager leading a team of Training Instructors and Engineering Trainees to serve the brewery with custom training, and also as Acting Production Manager, leading others (some 15 years my senior in the company) to achieve target brewing outputs.
Since becoming an entrepreneur over a decade ago, I’ve also been “there” countless times at an even more demanding level…
…as a multi-skilled Performance Improvement Specialist working – in person and online – with clients within and outside Africa, to deliver promised results.
Sometimes it’s not deliberate on the part of the client or representative. They tend to get so busy with their own business tasks that they “forget” or “de-prioritize” what they agreed to do for you.
But the problem created for you WILL always remain the same!
That’s why you need to call their attention, if/when they inadvertently fail to meet you halfway as agreed.

It rarely happens anymore, what with my increasing name/brand recognition for what I do…but several years ago, it happened fairly often. I mean people calling me a “Motivational Speaker/Author” – based on aspects of of my writing or learning events they were exposed to.
But whenever it happened (or happens), I made (or make) a point of promptly correcting the person, by stating that I am a Self-Development Educator/Performance Improvement Specialist.
So, what’s the difference, you ask?
In this paper I explain why calling me a Motivational Speaker would be most inaccurate and potentially deny those who can benefit from me (possibly persons you care about!) the opportunity to discover that I can help them.
Yes, there is a motivational dimension to what I do, but my basic aim is to help people achieve Mental Emancipation™, by (re-) orienting them about what they (think they) know; how they see themselves/their society; and what they believe they can (or cannot) do.
You could in fact call it “Philosophical Re-Orientation”.
I have gained deep insight into the socio-cultural situation in Nigeria, and wish to share my ideas with others. My objective is to influence people to positively change the way they think/act towards getting what they want in life. That’s why I also describe my role as that of a Social Change Agent.
We all (should?) take time to reflect on our experiences, and develop our own philosophies about life.
We should also be unafraid to voice/discuss them with others, even if they differ from what the majority hold to be true. This is especially important, if our ideas can help others.
It is my considered opinion that many harmful myths, values etc are held in our society today, causing major damage to the self-perception of the average Nigerian
I believe that correcting this damage will enable many Nigerians (re)discover themselves, and achieve more personal successes to the overall benefit of our country.
You can help an individual become motivated to achieve success in a chosen area of life, but if the wrong “education” about himself/his society is not corrected by helping him re-think or unlearn certain things, his chances of achieving sustainable successes are limited.
The phrase “know yourself” becomes relevant here.
Many Nigerians – motivated or not – do not know themselves. For instance, many believe the only way to get respect is to have a white man as a friend…Or to be based in “Jand”(i.e. overseas), and visit Nigeria every once in a while.
I have worked with white people (from England/South Africa etc), right here in Nigeria. Some expressed unease with how most Nigerians treated them “special” for no obvious reasons.
A few wondered why we treated ourselves shabbily/with contempt! Our own Fela once sang “Let us think say, Oyinbo no good pass me”(translation: “Let us stop thinking the White man is better than us“). I guess most of us heard the music, but didn’t listen to the lyrics!
In certain ways, I see myself as a non-singing ideological equivalent of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Through his lyrics, I discovered myself, and became passionately proud of being Black, Nigerian and African. (I named my first son after Fela, for this/his other good sides). My objective is to help others achieve similar Self-Discovery.
Think about Fela’s messages and you’ll find that just as he entertained with good vibes, he also motivated and often educated his listeners. For example he once sang about the white colonialists:
“…Na we open dem eyes. Na five hundred years slavery cause am. Dem meet us we dey do plenty things. I say we teach dem plenty things. No be me talk am, na books dey talk am. No be the yeye books you dey read, for the yeye school for your town. Na those colonial books from dat London..”
(translation: “We were the ones who opened their eyes. Five hundred years of slavery caused it. They found us doing many things. I say we taught them many things. It is not I who said it. It’s the books that say it. Not the rubbish books you read, in the rubbish school in your town. It’s those colonial history books in London..“).
So “Who” is a Self-Development Educator? And how does a Self-Development Educator differ from a Motivational Speaker? Here’s my personal definition of a Self-Development Educator:
A person who provides practical information about what people can do by themselves for themselves to achieve their goals in life.
Specifically, he/she will consider 2 major aspects to developing/empowering people: (a) Motivational – I help people see/believe they can achieve goals they set for themselves in life. (b) Educational – I actively challenge, (what I consider) any limiting sets of values, belief systems etc they hold, deriving from their environment or elsewhere.
I tell them why it is important to be Self-Educated and Emancipated Thinkers™, if they wish to empower themselves to achieve sustainable successes. Lastly, I SHOW them(through articles, special reports, talks, coaching programs and other learning events) – often using lessons from my experiences, and other real-life case studies – HOW TO empower themselves to go about pursuing their set goals in a way that increases their chances of success.
In showing people how to empower themselves, I work hard to make them INDEPENDENT of me, by helping them develop confidence in their own abilities to come up with solutions that work for them.
For instance in my article titled “A System That Can Produce Millionaire African Writers” (which has been read over 5,600 times since I republished it on this blog back in May 2014), I provided an example of how my adopted approach benefits the larger society:
“It is my strong conviction that empowerment of individuals to be multi-skilled, independent minded creatives, who are able to leverage technology and the Internet in ways that require little or no capital, for the purpose of offering value adding products and services for which they will paid, is the most realistic, and viable solution for Africans living in Africa. I was just preparing my kids for another day’s run of the Personal Achievement Coaching for Kids (PACK) program I developed for them based on a unique Home schooling arrangement.
Less than 10 minutes later, I was done with my response, and back with the kids for our session.
However, that only happened because I had anticipated MONTHS ago, that some Farm CEOs clients/subscribers I’d told about potential cost-saving/performance enhancing benefits of Daphnia (and Earthworm) rearing would want to know more.

A. On page 1 you’ll see a preview with links to a 2 part Guest Post I got published with a high traffic 3rd party website in 2012.
Suffice to say that I would not have been able to respond so promptly with an answer that fully addressed the CEO’s questions – and then some – if I’d NOT prepared it ahead of time!
Now, the uninitiated tend not to get it, but doing the above, despite NOT resulting in ANY new sale, doing so, actually puts me in a BETTER position to sell.
Here’s why:
A. It makes my clients happy they connected with me, when they get access to deeper insights about how to do what they do better, at low to zero cost.
B. Such happy clients inadvertently say good things about me to others in their networks, boosting my name/brand recognition.
At some point in the future one or more of those positive benefits to them will lead in the long run to more tangible direct/indirect benefits for me – including repeat sales and/or referrals!
Adopting the strategy I recommend here requires that you develop a mental attitude of Self-Reliance

Take this from me, as a person who successfully uses a strategy of self-reliance based on intelligent preparation, to defy adversity in any form.
I have done so in both paid employment as well as self-employment, for close to 2 decades.
Forget about trying to climb on others’ backs – especially by way of using “connections” or “favours” from supposedly powerful others etc
That is NOT a reliable strategy, and can sometimes lead to putting yourself in an inferior position before others, that ultimately undermines your ability to actualize your full God-given potentials.
What I propose here WILL enable you advance by yourself, and with help from others willing to give unconditional support, without losing your freedom, or your dignity.
The key here is being able to accurately visualize where you need to go, and then putting in the work needed to get there – when and how it most matters.
I know this because I’ve experienced it – more times than I can count.
And that’s why I make BEING PROACTIVELY PREPARED such a fanatical habit of mine..!
Every single day that passes, I reflect deeply on new ideas based on what I read, see or hear and use the insights that come to me, from doing so, to prepare new problem-solving resources to meet my target audiences needs.
If you’d like to continue wowing those who buy from you, long after you take their money, especially so that they never make the mistake of experiencing buyer’s remorse, THEN …I recommend you adopt a similar strategy to what I’ve described in this write-up.
