Reducing Catfish Feeding Costs (A Secret Weapon)

This report is primarily a review of findings from research studies carried out by African researchers. It features Leucaena Leucocephala and other alternative feed ingredients proposed based on results of trials conducted.

By way of interest, Leucaena leucocephala is a species of small Mimosoid tree originating from southern Mexico and northern Central America. Most of us will have seen this very hardy plant around(see pictures below). And it has so many uses to which we already put it, which I cover in my paper. This paper presents technical guidelines for good aquaculture feed manufacturing practice.
The guidelines were compiled by a high profile international organization…concerning the selection and use of feeds and additives.

They cover a number of issues, ranging from ingredient purchasing, processing, bulk storage, handling, monitoring, and documentation, to issues such as employee training and safety, customer relations, and the delivery of finished goods to the farmer.

This document was produced based on “international collaborative effort with information drawn from Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa”.

This is a full length research paper published by a team of Nigerian researchers. It “reviewed critically the potentials of locally manufactured
fish feed in enhancing, improving and sustaining aquaculture development in Africa.

Various methods of processing employed were discussed and suggestions were made on how aquaculture growth can reach its maximum potential in the production of fish through utilization of locally available fish feed ingredients”.
