To Achieve Web Marketing Success, You Need Persistence

The maiden issue of my first ever newsletter – called the Self-Development Digest – was published on Mon 5th Jun 2006 and it was titled Bad/Embarrassing Experiences CAN Help You Succeed!

Today makes it 8 years since that issue was published. But the newsletter has since evolved into this blog (Daily Multidisciplinary Self-Development Nuggets).

It takes having undiluted passion to keep going, month after month, after month (as happened 8 years ago), and day after day (as happens now), doing something of this sort in a place like Nigeria.

Many who start content publishing (online or off the web) often fail to keep it going this long.

I mean here in Nigeria/Africa. Visit many Nigerian/African owned websites, and you will see what I mean.

Many times, the newsletter issue available for viewing is rarely a current one – and if there is a blog, it will often have irregular or outdated posts. I’ve seen this happen MANY times!

Why is this so?

I believe it’s due to the mental attitude of our people.

We are too focused on getting the benefits FIRST. We want the results we desire to come quickly, and if they don’t we begin to discontinue any tasks or activities we feel cost us too much time, effort or money compared to whatever benefits they bring us.

What those who quit in this manner fail to realize is that most times a little persistence, and diligent refining of our methods and strategies will lead to the results we want.

I am living proof that this is so.

My newsletter subscriber base keeps growing, and I keep getting surprised by the "increasing profiles" of those who choose to join. More and more Nigerian/African professionals, corporate executives and CEOs now subscribe to my mailing list.

In the past, I had mainly people from South Africa, America, Ghana, Cameroon, Singapore, China etc.

But that’s not all – Nigerians/Africans now get back to me – and refer my work to others. As a result, I have discovered websites and discussion forums from that part of the world referring to my websites, and seen traffic coming my way as a result.

Most importantly, people now readily make payments for different products and services I promote via my website.

It’s so great to see people willing to take such huge leaps of faith – sending money into my account, and then WAITING for 24 to 72 hours to get emails carrying my spreadsheet software, PDF user guides etc that they paid for.

Bello H,. became a subscriber to my mailing list in 2011 and paid N13,000.00 into my bank account from a bank branch in Abuja for my Feed Formulation Handbook and the Automated Ration Formulation Spreadsheet software. 24 hours later, I emailed a zipped folder containing the software and a detailed PDF user guide, with PDF invoice to him. So many other buyers from across Nigeria and some parts of Africa and North America have also followed, and it continues.

There must be something I know – that others who say it does not work DON’T!

Do you need to get word out about yourself/what you do to others?

I urge you to start your own web based newsletter – and also a blog – today.

Make sure you have a professional mailing list management software (I use a FREE one – Mailchimp.com, that is extremely powerful) to send it out to subscribers.

It costs almost nothing when compared to printing of flyers. Yet it can get you more tangible results. If you need help, click here to let me know.

[Hope for Nikel] Let’s help Nikel Lakise (Patrick Meninga’s Friend) to Beat Leukemia

Most regular readers know that Patrick Meninga is the popular US based blogging expert whose blogging strategy I adapted (in 2012) to make this blog succeed: and we’ve since become friends. Yesterday, Patrick emailed me this link (http://www.hopefornikel.com/), about a care-giver colleague he says he’s worked with for 5 years:

It’s about Nikel Lakise’s story of battling with Leukemia. As soon as I read it, I decided to share it, as one of several ways I plan to play my part in helping her get the help she needs.

The linked page describes several different ways by which anyone can help Nikel – even YOU!

How to Choose the Right Website Design Service Provider (4 Tips)

Are you trying to choose a web designer to build a website for your business? You may not realize it, but today, great design skills are NOT all you need to check for. In this article I list 4 important issues you MUST consider before parting with your hard earned money to put your business on the net.

1. Size does not equate to competence

People sometimes assume a company with more money, employees, office space etc will be more capable than one with less. This is not necessarily correct. In fact much smaller businesses (or individuals) if they apply themselves intelligently/effectively, are often likely to be able to deliver better quality-and more personalized-services than bigger ones.

My advice it that you get authentic proof of competence in form of past web design projects (website addresses) the individual or company you want to choose has handled. Go one step further, if possible and request for client contact details so as to verify the claims made.

2. Do they have a business philosophy that protects you, the client?

Customers naturally often complain about unreliable service providers -including Internet-related service providers. The “newness” of the website concept sometimes can lead to uninitiated business owners getting less than they pay for.

For instance, websites could be built with little or no effort made – by the designer – to help the owner understand how to use it to reduce advertising/marketing expenses while increasing sales leads generation. Such costumers would subsequently lose faith in the use of websites for low cost, high impact marketing saying “It doesn’t work!”.

Ask the designer for details of what they will do for you, to help your website succeed, that others will not. Use the responses you get to compare with others you are considering – it will not be difficult to identify who is offering you the most tangible benefits.

3. What can they do to make managing your site easy and convenient for you?

Is the individual or company you are considering willing to (search for and) incorporate useful tools/resources(e.g. relevant and appropriate automation) that will equip your website to deliver the results you want at less cost, in less time and using less resources? Ask them for examples of useful automation they have setup on websites-and specific ones they can adapt to suit your biz needs.

Without the intelligent integration of appropriate automation on a website, the challenge of using the website to achieve increased business productivity will, over time become overwhelming.

The website should make it cheaper and easier to put information about your business in front of a wider range of prospects almost effortlessly. Website automation using server-sider custom CGI(Common Gateway Interface) scripting is one of the most common and effective ways to do this.

Ask your prospective web designer if s/he is conversant with the use of this technology (or another as effective or better). If he does not, ask if he has reliable access to someone who does. If you get a “No”,MAKE SURE you find someone else who can take care of that aspect.

4. Do they have a web marketing strategy for you?

This is the most important one. A competent web designer must demonstrate the willingness to study(and aptitude to understand) your business – including the goals you aim to achieve.

Most importantly s/he must be able to tell you – in simple, non-technical English – how the website can be used to further your business goals and objectives. So, ask if s/he has a Web Marketing Strategy in mind to enable you maximise the Returns On Your Investment in the website. If s/he struggles to answer, be very worried.

What is a Web Marketing Strategy?

A web marketing strategy is basically a step-by-step plan(that should be developed) based on an understanding of the ultimate purpose you intend to use your website to achieve. If well conceived, it will guide you on the specific things to do – daily, weekly etc – in order to leverage your website to get the intended results.

Without a web marketing strategy, you will soon find yourself struggling to justify the money you have spent(and will spend) to keep your website online. I’ll be a bit blunt here. Traditional methods can no longer satisfy today’s business marketing needs. If you do not have a web marketing strategy, your business WILL become extinct – and that’s putting it mildly too!

One of the many performance metrics currently used by serious business website owners is the Website Conversion Ratio(WCR)

It is computed by dividing the total number of visitors to your website by the number of those visitors who eventually take action subsequently to do business with you. The WCR will vary from one website/industry to the other.

For instance on the net a typical target WCR is about 3.0% – which means for every 100 visitors to your site, you will expect only about 3 persons to eventually do business with you.

This is why you must have a good marketing strategy to ensure that only the “right” visitors(i.e who fit the “profile” of your target audience) visit your site. The “right” visitors will constitute your “pre-qualified target audience” i.e people already interested in what your website offers.

A web marketing strategy makes more of the “right” people visit your site giving you a greater chance of getting contacted by more of your potential customers, so you get a chance to “close the sale” and record an increased WCR.

Another way of looking at the WCR is by seeing it as a measure of what I like to call the Return On Your Investment(ROYI) in a business website.

One Analogy: A website featuring a product that makes hair grow on bald heads will not interest a person who regularly visits the barber for a full hair cut!

The process involved in developing a web marketing strategy will help you craft marketing messages that make those who NEED your product or service recognize the unique benefit your website offers – and therefore subsequently visit it.

Summary – Start with these, but learn some more..

The above is not an exhaustive list. I have only highlighted four of the most important issues which if properly addressed should make your adoption of a web designer end up making you look good in the long term.

You might want to visit the www.google.com and type the question “How to choose a good web designer to build my website” or a similar query. You will come up links to other useful articles written on the subject.

If you think you’re too busy, get someone to do it for you. The time you spend on this preparatory stage could save you from making costly mistakes!

PS: This article was first written/published online in 2005, via www.spontaneousdevelopment.com (see it also on Ezinearticles.com). I find it simply AMAZING that so many business owners continue to let “experts” setup their online presence for them in the WRONG way. If you need help making use of the ideas I’ve shared here, click here to send me a message.

Why You Need to Mix Things Up Periodically – Even in Business (Hint: There Are Many Ways to Get Results You Want)

Even though you use the web for marketing, it PAYS to periodically connect with “humans” offline e.g. via phone and face to face. BUT not with intent to sell. Doing so once got me invited – in May 2012 – as Guest Speaker at Yaba College of Technology’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development’s Annual Semester Entrepreneurial Lecture in Lagos.

Quite often, you’ll be better off connecting offline with people to boost your name recognition, and credibility as an authority at what you do.

I do this all the time, and every now and then, and it wins me the expected results. Sometimes it ends up winning me income earning opportunities even though I did not start out with that in mind.

The above is why I recommend mixing it up every once in a while. Don’t just stick with one way of doing things. Change things up after a while, and you may be pleasantly surprised by what happens.

Note however that you must truly go out with an honest intent to serve or help others. Really make up your mind that you WILL give of yourself without being bothered about whether or not those you give to, choose to reward you in any way.

I do not know what you do. But I offer an example of what I do, below, so you can use it as a basis of deciding how to go about doing it for yourself.

Yesterday, while waiting to meet with an old client who hired me to setup a blog on his website, with articles I’ve ghostwritten for him, I flipped through the pages of a popular newspaper, and came across a interesting column on using Email Signatures.

The author was a young lady, and she did a great job of it.

After reading it I checked the contact details she provided and noticed her office address was just a walking distance from my client’s office, in the Allen avenue area of Ikeja, in Lagos-Nigeria.

When I left my client’s office, just before making my way to Guaranty Trust bank, I stopped over at the address, and used the lift to reach the 4th floor she’d supplied.

However, it turned out that she was not around – the attendant at the serviced offices firm told me to try calling her on phone.

This morning, around 10:30a.m, I called and spoke with her on her mobile line. Our conversation went well, and she expressed an interest in getting to know more about me, and the ideas I proposed, which she found interesting.

I promised to send her URLs to a few resources, in an email later on.

Below are excerpts from that email, which I have now dispatched to the email address displayed on her column. I share them here to help any persons interested in adopting this strategy for their own purpose. If you need help getting started, click here to let me know..

Hi <name removed>,

It was great speaking with you earlier today.

Like I told you when I called, I believe VERY MANY business owners in our part of the world are shortchanging themselves in the way they use their online presence.

By this I mean NOT just their websites, but the other web based resources they periodically make use of in a bid to promote the products and services they offer.

Your write-up in the <newspaper name> in which you shared tips for using an Email Signature told me you possessed insights that indicated you would appreciate the bigger picture of web marketing that I paint for clients I work with.

As I said, I am NOT trying to sell anything.

Instead, my purpose for reaching out to you (and others I’ve connected with in the past) is to point out other complementary tools, techniques and strategies that can be used in an integrated self-sustaining manner to generate a continuous stream of quality pre qualified prospects/leads, that one can convert to buyers/sales.

To address your request for details about me, I’ve included links below to some of the generic resources I use in my work…

1. Below is a link to an article on my blog that offers prospects insights into what I mean by a Web Marketing System (WMS):

http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/what-you-need-to-achieve-web-marketing-success-4-tips/

2. Click the link below to view a 2 page PDF that uses a mind map to provide an overview of who I am, and what I do – with links to related resources including a resume that describes my background from a past life over a decade ago, in paid employment.

http://tayosolagbade.com/uploads/WhoIsTKS.pdf

3. Here’s a link to a PDF speaker-one-sheet for a talk I’ve recently begun offering, following my observation that so many CEOs still do NOT get it:

http://tayosolagbade.com/uploads/wms-talks-offer.pdf

Click to download - PDF Speaker One Sheet for Tayo Solagbade's ONE HOUR TALK titled 'Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep!'

The contents of the PDF highlight additional ways I advocate more business marketing decision makers THINK, and ACT if they want to reduce their Cost Of Sales/Cost of Customer Acquisition (COCA) – which is a useful way to BOOST PROFITS without needing to raise prices of one’s products/services.

Okay, , that’s all I have…just my humble suggestions of possible perspectives you can adopt in informing and educating your readers to make more successful use of the web for their businesses.

As I noted when we spoke, I’m hoping you’ll find something useful in the materials relating to web marketing that I’ve referred you to, that may help you better articulate other ideas you decide to share with your column’s readers.

The results I get from using this approach, at zero cost, convince me many African business owners are denying themselves TOO MANY zero cost opportunities to make the most profitable use of the Internet access and websites they PAY good money for.

If you have any queries or need clarifications, let me know.

With kindest regards,

Tayo

PS:

a. By the way, I should add that I came up with most of my own ideas/concepts from YEARS of trial and error trying to apply what I learnt from studying some of the top web marketing minds in the world.

What I now call a Web Marketing System is the condensed version of what I found worked for me, as a business owner in Africa’s peculiar market, dealing with Africa’s peculiar buyers (whose web based buying behavour is VERY different from that of counterparts in developed markets/economies.)

To achieve the above, I had to become comfortable with BREAKING the rules and coming up with my own ways of getting the results I wanted. It is, for instance, why my signature is often VERY long (I have several signatures, for different target audiences).

I mention the above because of the tip you gave in your write-up, about the length of an email signature. The one I’ve used here is the generic version that goes out with ALL my website contact forms’ auto response messages.

b. Once again, I must emphasize that there are no strings attached to this offer of mine. I’m NOT trying to sell anything to you. You do NOT even need to mention me. What I hope to see is MORE information and education being given out to readers from informed columns like yours, so that more African businesses can get better results using PC and Internet technology.

No. 169: Achieve Superior Success by Acting Locally While Thinking International

“Have noble intentions. A grand plan. A mission. An objective that makes a difference. A major difference. Something transcendent everyone you know assures you cannot be done, at least not by you. Many people who know you and love you do not believe you have what it takes to reveal the greatness they do not see through the prism of their misperceptions about you.” – Burt Dubin, renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid experts-who-speak, and Creator of the Speaking Success System

I first came across the above quote way back in 2001 – my last year in Guinness Nigeria.

Burt Dubin, by writing the above words, in one his many articles that I’ve read, touched and inspired me to get where I am today. Every time I felt I could no longer go on, quotes like the above, by him, and others, are what I reread to keep myself going.

If you’re an entrepreneur, you’ll understand what I mean. If you’re aspiring, you’re bound to understand sooner or later, if you diligently apply yourself to the pursuit of authentic success.

Aiming for an international standard of achievement, will automatically boost your local success

It’s simple common sense. What I propose here will equip you to make the products/services you offer – and the way you package and promote them – much more compelling than if you did NOT deliberately cater for an international audience in putting them together.

I’ll give an example, based on what I’ve done over the past 12 years:

My noble intentions include…

a. Building low cost customizable Excel-VB apps for sale to individuals and businesses to help them do what they do better.

b. Training creative MS Excel-VB solutions developers, who will help those who need it to improve their personal and business performance, like I did while in Guinness for 7 years, and like I have been doing for clients within/outside Africa, over the past decade.

c. Using public speaking to inform and educate my target audience about how to do what I do, and also to help interested others learn to make money doing it like I do.

In several past articles, I’ve shared stories about how many laughed at me over the years, whenever I told them about my above mentioned plans…

When I began, I struggled to find clients to pay me to develop apps, or to provide training or give talks on Excel-VB solutions development. Soon, I found myself coming under criticism. Close relatives asked me to consider doing something else.

Not surprisingly, what they proposed most times was what they saw others doing. They wanted me to aim for something they considered more believable and that was familiar.

A close family friend who owned a business asked me “Who’s going to pay you to do that with MS Excel?

I recall telling him what I’d done in Guinness and how it had earned me wide recognition and career advancement opportuntie4s. He replied that I would not find such interest in the Nigerian market.

I thanked him, but refused to accept what he said. Instead, I went back and did more deep thinking and decided to begin putting my stuff on the web. I knew Excel-VB solutions development was big business in many developed markets.

My experiences with Guinness also convinced me I only needed to SHOW proof of how Excel-VB solutions I offered could help businesses in Nigeria/Africa, to win paying clients.

It would not be easy, I knew, but I was sure it would be worthwhile in the end.

As I continued trying out all sorts of ideas, I became increasingly convinced that the best way to win high profile paying clients would be to use the web to attract their attention to me. I began reading up on how to promote my offers online – and I discovered article marketing.

Since I had lots of experiences from my time in Guinness to tap from, I began writing articles that narrated true stories about how I used Excel-VB to solve real life problems in the manufacturing workplace.

Later on, I began adding short tutorials/case studies supported with video demonstrations.

All the time I did these, I kept studying how internationally recognized experts whose work I admired, were doing their own self-promotion.

Then I adapted the ideas I got from studying them, in a way that I felt would appeal to my target market.

It did not happen overnight, but eventually, the enquiries began to come – from local as well as international visitors. Some were small business owners, others were independent consultants, and a few were decision makers in companies – even multinational manufacturers and oil service companies.

For instance, in 2009, I got a phone call from a Dutch expatriate working as a senior manager heading a department in an international oil service firm.

He asked to meet with me at Eleganza’s premises in the 7-Up area of Ikeja, Lagos-Nigeria.

There he told me how they’d been searching for the right MS Excel expert to help them with an in-house problem without success. They’d had many people come in, but after meeting with them found they lacked the needed depth of expertise to solve the problem they had.

One day he decided to do a Google search and my MS Excel Heaven website came up.

The fact that the search engine result indicated I was based in Nigeria caught his attention. When he spoke with me later he noted that the videos and demo apps on my website convinced him I was likely to be able to help them. [NB: I’ve am currently building a new version of that website, to suit the content repurposing I’m doing since replacing spontaneoudevelopment.com with tayosolagbade.com].

After our meeting, he arranged for me to visit the finance department for a meeting with the department’s head and an assistant on Lagos Island.

There was a large and important MS Excel workbook built for heavy tax computation data handling and report generation. The author had suddenly left the company, and no one else knew how to use the workbook.

They wanted me to help re-build the workbook to make it more user-friendly. I spent about 1 hour with the gentleman. By the time I left, we were discussing my fees, when I would start, how long it would take me to finish etc.

The next morning, I got a call from the PA to the Dutch expatriate saying the finance department had found my conversation with them quite useful and that they’d said they wanted me to start. I however eventually ended up not doing that job, because we were unable to agree on certain aspects regarding my payment.

Having said that, the point remains that I got found and contacted – at zero cost to me – by a top decision maker in a local office of a large, and well known international oil Service Company!

And that happened because of the approach I adopted in promoting my services and products – I chose to make myself LOOK bigger than I was, and to appeal to a global audience.

The oil service company that contacted me was one that MANY local experts I’d met had tried countless times to gain access to, without success. Those who learnt I got invited by them asked me what connections I’d used. I told them all I did was use my web marketing system to intelligently achieve what Michel Fortin calls Power Positioning™.

Doing so using my website, made me stand out from other providers in my local market – most of who ONLY had brochure websites, stating what they did and little else.

Many Experts Lack the Insights to Achieve Outcomes Like the Above…

They feel adopting “foreign” techniques and strategies like those I describe here would be over kill.

Maybe when not properly adapted to suit local situations that would be the case.

Otherwise, creative adaptation of “foreign” ideas can help you achieve superior marketing results locally. The results I get confirm this is so.

And here’s the best part: In the long run, this strategy is can actually reward you with patronage from international buyers, if you do it right. I am proof that this happens, because, when I started doing it, I initially got responses ONLY from Nigerians. But over the years, I have not only been getting enquiries from various countries/continents (including Australia), but I have won buyers from within/outside Africa.

In several cases, international enquirers (from North America/Asia especially) who contacted me expressed surprise on learning that I was African and based in Africa.

My phone conversation with a US based farm CEO enquirer just 2 days ago is a good example.

I should however add that in some cases, announcing to them that I’m a Nigerian, SCARES them off (I’m sure you know why)!

Now, if my offers can be so compelling that international prospects reach out to me, often thinking I’m based in THEIR part of the world, local ones are likely to be even more impressed.

Not surprisingly, over 80% of my buyers are Nigerians, who have NEVER met me in the flesh – and who send payment even after learning, from me, that I am based in Cotonou…outside Nigeria!

Final Words: Set Yourself Apart from the Crowd by Acting Locally, While Thinking International!

If you want to set yourself apart from your rivals or competitors, in a way that makes potential buyers choose you over them, I recommend you adopt a similar strategy of “Acting Locally While Thinking International”.

And if, while you’re at it, doubts creep into your mind, remember the quote below:

“I have never started a company that, at some point, didn’t cause me to have doubts. This must be a stupid idea because no one else is doing it. Why don’t people get it? Maybe there is nothing there” We all have self doubts, but as entrepreneurs we don’t let these thoughts stop us. It is only a sanity check and is a normal thing.” – Fran Tarkenton (Former American Football Star/Millionaire Entrepreneur)

[IMPORTANT NOTE:====

On 4th May 2014, Tayo’s 9 year old domain (Spontaneousdevelopment dot com), which hosted his website, was taken over by Aplus.net.

Within a few days however, Tayo used his advanced self-taught web development skills to build a SUPERIOR “reincarnation” of it the website http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

But updates are still ongoing to URLs bearing the old domain name in most of the over 1,000 web pages, and blog posts

he’s published.

If you experience any difficulties finding a page or document, email Tayo at tksola dot com.

Click “Tayo, What Happened to SpontaneousDevelopmentDotCom ?” to read a detailed narrative about how the above event occurred :-))

Here’s an article Tayo wrote, to inspire others to defy adversity, and bounce back to even greater reckoning at what they do EVERY time:

And he wrote the one below, to explain why losing a domain name, no matter how old NO LONGER determines your online success or otherwise:

A Proven Strategy to Find Profitable Buyers Regardless of Your Domain Name

Don’t Leave Yourself Defenceless Against Falsehood: Use Smart Technology You Already Own to Protect Yourself (True Story)

[LAGOS] Mr A. “That’s a fat lie! I never said I spoke to your mother on the phone. What I said was that your husband told me what your mother said!!”

Miss. B: “But I heard you clearly. Now that mother has said she has never met or spoken with you, on phone or in person, you’re tying to save face!”

I recently witnessed the above exchange, between 2 individuals, based on discussions they held at a previous meeting – in the presence of a neutral third party.

The truth is, we each owe ourselves a duty, to protect ourselves from being falsely accused. In today’s world, the fast pace at which technology makes things happen, tends to quickly cause potentially irreparable damage of reputations, if care is not taken.

Falsehood, when carefully crafted with malicious intent, can be rapidly propagated with devastating impact on even the most “squeaky clean” personalities.

In the past, it was not so easy to achieve such far reaching impact, with falsehood. Today, tools like Facebook and Twitter, used my massive numbers of people DAILY, puts power in the hands of ANYONE with “news”.

That’s why I find it amazing how so many people fail (or forget) to make FULL use of powerful (often costly) technology tools they own

Especially to PROTECT themselves against abuse, exploitation and other forms of negativity. Today, even the phones we carry around boast amazing capabilities that make doing what I propose quite easy.

For instance, (apart from a simple double SIM Nokia) I mainly use a Blackberry 9015 3G.

Not only do smart phones display or play multimedia, they also boast powerful audio and video recording capabilities.

Indeed mine does EVERYTHING I need. For example, taking photos, recording videos/audios for use in my work (e.g tutorial videos for my Excel-VB software on my Youtube channel), and also updating this blog – even as I travel to/from the borders of countries like Nigeria and Benin Republic.

Yet, I keep coming across (or hearing about) people who emerge from a meeting or gathering arguing about who said (or did not say) “ABCD” or “1234”!

This is why I believe we must all begin to make conscious effort to think ahead, deeply and carefully too, about every single situation we choose to put ourselves in.

Painstakingly study the personalities and character of those we interact with – new acquaintances or old friends – to be reasonably sure of what to expect from them.

In cases where/when we have doubts, it may prove VERY wise to take the precaution of protecting ourselves by finding a way to document the proceedings. That could be on paper, with signatures agreeing to the contents, or via some recording of some sort etc.

A recording can be especially handy in cases where what you see/hear transpiring is something you anticipate one or more relevant parties may choose to deny in future – and which you know can affect you negatively.

In the example I gave above, Miss. B went on to backup her claims about what she claimed Mr. A said by producing a verbatim typed/printed version of what Mr. A had during the previous meeting. She explained that it was a transcript from an audio recording she’d obtained using her smartphoneg as Mr. A was speaking…and offered to play it back!

Without that kind of proof, it will often be a case of one person’s word against another’s…and little progress will be made

Yet, sometimes, such lack of authentic, verifiable proof can land an innocent person in trouble (e.g damaged reputation or even jail)!

The irony is that most people never think it can happen to them – until it does.

I say the above based on experiences I have had, in which malicious lies were told against me by persons MUCH OLDER than me, in conjunction with persons who worked for them. Those experiences made me develop a survival instinct to ALWAYS keep good records (or letters etc) and always seek document what is said during interactions that I feel may be referred to in future.

This is one of the reasons that I have invested in additional smart technology tools, apart from my smart phone, to better take the needed precautions.

And I’ve also briefed a close associate who is a legal practitioner in Nigeria, about my concerns. Indeed, he has periodically coached me on aspects of the law, and how to make them work for one’s self, in terms of rights protection etc.

Most times today’s powerful technology driven news media, gleefully propagate “news” (especially “bad news), putting a person “accused” of doing wrong, at the mercy of the Court of Public Opinion (i.e. COPO).

Sadly, the COPO is subject to all sorts of biases. Very few people can get a “fair hearing” in it!

Examples of possible exceptions will be if an accuser recants…admitting s/he lied…or if a person “accused” of doing wrong produce verifiable evidence (e.g. a recorded video/audio) that demonstrates his/her innocence.

It is my considered opinion, in the light of today’s happenings that – at the risk of acting paranoid – more people need to make deliberate use of the powerful technological tools available to them, to protect themselves in the manner described above.

I have been doing it for quite a while now, and it has proved to be a VERY profitable line of action. Painful past experiences forced me to begin doing so.

Today, not only does it enable me punch holes in attempts to give me a bad name, or exploit me, it also sends a clear message to persons with such naughty intents, that success may NOT come easily for them. Sometimes, THAT can discourage such persons from making YOU a target.

Every smart thinking adult should take precautions to avoid being a defenceless victim of some others person’s “false accusations/lies”, “mistakes”!

It’s unlikely that one can completely eliminate the possibility of it happening. However, diligent preventive action, like that recommened in this piece, can greatly minimize the chances.

Don’t leave yourself defenceless: Use what you have to protect yourself against mean spirited evil doers…and TEACH YOUR KIDS to do so too!

Writing Can be Great Therapy to Deal With Adversity [Hint: FREE Workshop – “25 Avoidable Mistakes No One Will Warn You About In Starting Your OWN Business”]

When facing hard times, READING to educate, inform and inspire yourself to weather the storms of your life WILL help you. However, WRITING about your experiences CAN help you even more – as I explain below.

I say this from over 10 years of personal experience…

For over a decade as an entrepreneur, I have repeatedly overcome prolonged periods of heart breaking struggles in my pursuit of personal achievement and success.

When delays, disappointments, setbacks and failure relentlessly come at you as sometimes happens in life, there is a serious tendency to get overwhelmed.

Even the strongest of us can get demoralized and disillusioned when hard times hit!

Indeed, persons who others normally look upon for inspiration and encouragement, being human themselves, sometimes in their life also end up needing others to do just that for them too.

And if they do not get it, that could mark the onset of a downturn in their fortunes. NOT because they lack the physical ability or strength to recover, but because they are mentally and/or emotionally spent, or defeated.

You may have heard about the principle used by martial arts practitioners about winning a fight without even fighting.

In other words, you can defeat an opponent mentally before you have to engage him/her physically.

How?

Simply by doing things that either make him/her lose self-confidence or interest. Once you can successfully create such an internal state of affairs in the mind of your opponent, his/her ability to focus on the task of winning against you becomes much more difficult.

Generally in warfare or confrontation, the above principle is used successfully by smart warriors or fighters.

Muhammad Ali is one famous example of a fighter who use psychological warfare as a weapon to weaken his opponent before the actual fight took place in the right.

I doubt that I need to give you examples of what that great man did, and how. Most of us readily recall them. He’s a legend today because of how he did it.

We can all learn by reading about people like Muhammad, and how they came back from defeat, and exposure to prolonged periods of adversity. Just like Ali did through those years of being stripped of his title and banned from boxing, to come back and WIN again.

I have done that, and as one writer noted, I discovered that reading does indeed help to “strengthen the mind”.

However, I also discovered that writing about my experiences, especially based on what I read, and the lessons I learnt, had a powerful healing effort on me.

That brings me to the message of this article.

You see, I got to a point in reading a wide range of books that there were gems of insight and experience based wisdom, anecdotes etc, that I wanted to be able to read and re-read those “special sections” without having to flip through each book all over again to find them.

Some of the books included the following…

1. Napoleon Hills’ Think and Grow Rich, and Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude

2. How to Win Friends and Influence People – by Dale Carnegie

3.  The Startup Entrepreneur – by James R. Cook

4. How to Succeed in Business by Breaking All The Rules – by Dan Kennedy.

…and several others

Each book at different stage of my life as an entrepreneur, offered me useful inspiration and education that helped me keep going in spite of hardships I encountered.

I found myself using highlight pens – very often – to mark specific sections I wanted to remember…

One day it occurred to me that I could extract those special “blocks of text” from each book and condense them into a separate document for my personal consumption. That way I would be able to come back and reread them as often as I needed to, whenever I felt down.

The idea to do this came to me one day as I reread the final chapter in James Cook’s book in which he admonished to reader, to pick up and read Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich ANYTIME s/he felt like giving up. He assured that doing so would help him/her rediscover the sense of purpose, inspiration and passion to keep going – adding that THAT was what he did, that led him to eventual success.

I realized that I had several books in which certain sections really helped me, each time I read them.

So I began typing them into an MS Word document that I names Starting a Business – the theme reflecting the phase I was passing through.

As the weeks progressed, I soon discovered that I was inadvertently adding my personal experiences in my writing, to support the excerpts I was taking from the book.

At a point, it occurred to me that beyond helping myself, I could deliberately continue writing in a way that would enable me help others.

This was because most of the experiences I was having were what I knew others had had in the past, and which many more would still have.

Yet, nothing in the Nigerian marketplace – books especially – really offered any formal guiding philosophy for them to follow.

I felt I could use myself as a guinea pig to fill that gap.

Over a 2 and half month period I continued writing based on the experiences that had made me extract those book excerpts.

Then I would append the excerpts at relevant points in my writing, sharing relevant explanations and insights.

By the time I was done, I have typed almost 80 pages!

I then read through and edited it, till I was satisfied – splitting the contents into chapters, and naming them according to the key lessons I felt each one taught me.

Later on, I rephrased the titles as “mistakes” to be avoided. More and more, I began to see the 80 page document as a book.

One day, after reading through it again and getting the much needed relief, the thought occurred to me that the book was helping me SURVIVE the hardships of my new life as an entrepreneur.

That was when I knew I could help others. If the book did that for me, then it could do the same for others. So, I called it the Entrepreneurs Survival Reference Manual. That basically described how I had been using it.

However, I soon made that the subtitle and instead adopted what I considered a more catchy title: 25 Avoidable Mistakes No One Will Warn You About In Starting Your OWN Business – in Nigeria.

However, my desire to help others made me include an offer on the cover I designed, of a FREE 4 hour workshop, for all buyers of the app.

That FREE Workshop offer remains open to this day – especially with the growing wave of interest in entrepreneurship now happening (click here to request details)

More schools and universities are including some form of entrepreneurship education/training in their formal curricula.

We are seeing more and more Centers of Entrepreneurship Development springing up.

I however believe most of them need to get REAL life authentic entrepreneurs to come in as external facilitators (at the least).

This will give their students an accurate impression of what awaits them in the real world, when they “graduate” – and HOW to survive, until they can flourish and excel.

As for other entrepreneurs who may struggle to do same, I recommend you consider using the approach of writing as a form of self-therapy, that I’ve described here.

It will help you “create” a formal body of original material you can use to offer YOUR own experience based information, education and inspiration to aspiring others!
