Every business wants increased profits, and each one goes about achieving that purpose in different ways: Some employ price increases. Others make promotional offers to boost volume sales.

The problem in the latter case tends to be that they still have to spend more to get more sales, and often if not well managed, there may not be any significant difference in bottom line margins achieved, especially when competitors launch a counter event.

I describe tested and proven ways by which anyone can intelligently implement Variable Costs (VC) Monitoring/Control and Reduction initiatives – supported by spreadsheet tracking/analyses – to increase chances of routinely recording optimal profit margins even when prices remain fixed and/or competition is fierce.

This Article Is Based On Proven Real-Life Practice

The ideas, concepts and strategies I advocate for adoption in this article are based on proven practice. In fact, the case study and specific analogies used are based on real-life activities that I personally partook in over a period of six years, as a manager in a large blue-chip multinational brewing company.

Read my article titled “Use Custom Automation Of Your Spreadsheet Reports To Drive Down Costs And Increase Your Profits” for additional details of my experiences in this area, while in paid employment.

What you learn from reading the above mentioned article, will hopefully encourage you to seriously explore ways to put the information provided in this article to good use for your business.

The principles described below can be successfully adapted to virtually any business operation – be it service or production based.

If you need any help with thinking up ways/means of putting them to use, I would be pleased to help out.

Case Study

“Because its purpose is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two – and only these two – basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and Innovation produce results. All the others are costs” – Peter Drucker

What follows is a bit of a simplistic example, but it serves the intended purpose of providing a basis for the following discussion. The logic on which this analogy is based can be applied to any situation.

African Arts Concepts Limited (a hypothetical company) uses three raw materials, A, B and C in producing their flagship brand Product Z – which sells for N14,000 naira (about $100 equivalent, using a N140.00 Naira to $1.00 US dollar currency conversion rate) per unit – in the following combination:

5 lengths of material A(N2,500.00) + 1 kg of material B(N1,500.00) + 20 pieces of material C(N,2500.00) = 1 unit of Product Z(N6,500.00 Naira or $46.43 US Dollars).

Assume other (say operational and marketing) expenses amount to N500 per unit of Product Z , the Cost Price for one unit would be N7,000.00($50.00) – approximately. That means whenever 1 unit of Product Z is sold, a gross profit of N7,000 (N14,000 – N7,000) or $50.00 USD is made by African Arts Concepts Ltd.

Table 1.0 – Costs Breakdown(Based On Normal Usage Of All Materials)

THE PROBLEM(Common To Many Businesses)

Now imagine that a staff of African Arts Concepts Limited begins to over use (and this does happen!) material B by say 0.5kg for every unit of Product Z. The usage cost for(i.e. cost of using) Material B per unit of Product Z produced will become N2,250(N1,500.00 plus N750.00).

5 lengths of material A(N2,500.00) + 1 kg of material B(N1,500.00) + 0.5 kg of material B(unrecorded N750.00 usage cost ) + 20 pieces of material C(N2,500.00) = 1 unit of Product Z(N7,250.00 Naira or $51.79 US Dollars).

Adding the other (operational and marketing) expenses of N500 per unit of Product Z, would bring the cost price/unit of Product Z to N7,750($55.4 USD), instead of N7,000($50.00 US Dollars). In otherwords, the company incurs an – unnecessary – N750 or $5.4 US Dollars additional cost to produce EACH unit of Product Z.

N7,750.00

*company incurs an – unnecessary – N750 or $5.4 additional cost to produce EACH unit of Product Z.

That extra $5.4 would most likely be LOST because:

(a). African Arts Concepts Limited may not detect it – except they have monitoring systems(e.g. a custom automated Variable Cost Analysis Spreadsheet) set up to alert them to such occurrences.

That batch of Product Z will therefore still be sold for $100.00 US Dollars per unit(a 20% LOSS!).

(b). Even if it is detected, little can be done to correct it for batches that would already have been produced BEFORE discovery/correction of the problem.

Multiple Negative Consequences

If continued unchecked, this over usage can quickly cause huge losses: Multiply the N750 naira ($5.4 USD) over usage by say 1000 units of Z produced in a month and you get N750,000($5,400 USD) – lost unknowingly.(That $5,400 USD over usage equates to losing 54 market ready units of Product Z!).

What will typically happen is that at the end of the month, the company would find that they have 500kg LESS of material B left than expected. This would subsequently require them to make an additional unplanned purchase of material B using money budgeted for other purposes – thereby disrupting cash flow etc.

The foregoing is one major reason why some businesses that appear to be doing well suddenly go under, or record low profits/losses! They fail to keep a grip on their real costs of operation. What has been described here is applicable to virtually any type of business – be it service or product based. One only needs to change the items of income and expenditure considered in delivering the relevant product/service.

Question: How Do I Prevent A Problem Like The One Above Happening To Me?

Answer: By Adopting Variable Costs(VC) Monitoring/Control Techniques.

I like to think of Variable Costs, from a lay man’s perspective, as those expenses you incur, which can(and do) vary depending on your ability to find cheaper yet equally – if not more – effective ways to do what you do, when compared to your current methods.

To implement a VC Monitoring/Control system, you can follow the steps outlined below – making needed adjustments to suit the peculiarities of your unique situation or need (Note that the use of spreadsheets is integral to the approach I recommend, as it facilitates sustainability of systems set up).

Step 1 : Collate Relevant Data in Spreadsheets :

Start recording and analysing your business revenue and daily operating expenses, including variable cost elements such as how much you spend on marketing, transportation, phone calls, materials usage etc.

You can easily do this by creating Excel spreadsheets with raw data entry interfaces linked to standard reporting templates(which generate meaningful output from formulas applied to your raw data).

For best results, you might find recording materials usages in the same spreadsheet, with their corresponding prices helps in deriving expenses relevant to materials usages(by simple linking of cells to be multiplied e.g.”Kgs” used by price per kg).

Step 2 : Benchmark Your Process :

You will also need to do some benchmarking by obtaining detailed industry data for businesses similar to yours. Using that data, you would derive weighted averages, upper and lower control limits etc.

These could then be charted in your spreadsheet using actual data you would periodically post. Your objective in managing your business/process would then be to ensure your Key Performance Indicators(KPIs) fall between the established control limits implying that it is performing optimally.

If during your daily, weekly or monthly recording and monitoring, you then notice any of your charted KPIs deviating outside the favourable range, you would be able to quickly investigate and correct the problem before it goes too far.

In the case study used above for example, if a target usage rate of material B per unit of Product Z produced had been routinely recorded in a spreadsheet, and plotted on say a Schewart chart, the CONTINUOUS over usage of 0.5kg per unit would have reflected in the slope of the chart – and therefore led to early detection.

Again, this is a simplistic approach. More effective methods(e.g. automated plotting of a Cusum – Cumulative Sum Deviation chart) can be easily employed using spreadsheets with about the same effort. I cover Cusum charts, and how to use them, in considerable detail in a new PDF report I’m working on.titled “Simple Performance Measurement/Process Control Tools You Can Use In Your Business”.

Question: Okay, That’s To Detect/Stop Things Getting Out Of Hand. But HOW Exactly Do I Go About INCREASING My Profits Without Raising My Prices?

Answer: By Applying Practical Variable Costs(VC) REDUCTION Techniques.

As I earlier stated, your variable costs are those expenses you incur, which can(and do) vary depending on your ability to find cheaper yet equally if not more effective ways to do what you do, when compared to your current methods.

By implication therefore, a VC REDUCTION Strategy is bound to make a difference to your bottom line profits.

Adopting this strategy means you will actively encourage/engage in the routine search for quick, easy, practical, inexpensive, and sustainable ways to drastically cut down on the expenses required to make and/or deliver your products and services to those who want them.

The foregoing underscores Peter Drucker’s assertion that Marketing and Innovation are the two basic functions in any business which can enhance its profitability. All others are costs.

Therefore To Increase Your Profits Without Raising Prices :

1. Increase Your Marketing (While Reducing Your VC):

Find more NEW customers more frequently. But in doing so, think up cheaper and more effective/efficient ways to reach more people who fit your target audience profile. Even if you already have a website, chances are there are still a number of viable ways you could use it to achieve this purpose, that you are YET to explore. Take it from me. I get so so much done at little or no extra expense using my website resources more creatively.

One reason why this is possible is because I have devoted hundreds of hours to learning web design, custom CGI programming and web marketing techniques.

If you actively work to find new customers, you create a growing pool of clients from whom you can generate referrals and repeat businesses resulting in higher sales volumes/turnover. Also, it helps you cover gaps that will occur periodically from client attrition or turnover.

ONE GOOD WAY – Use A Website:

Traditional methods of business marketing and advertising can be quite expensive especially when used for protracted periods. The dilemma of the business owner who seeks increased exposure therefore tends to be, finding a reliable way to stay in touch with(or visible to) her target audience without going bankrupt.

The answer, from my experience lies in learning how to intelligently leverage technology and the Internet to complement the marketing efforts being made offline, in a way that cumulatively lowers overall expenses incurred – resulting in increased profits over time.

Read my article titled “Zero Cost Methods To Boost Your Business Marketing and Cuts Your Costs Using Your Website” for tested and proven ideas, methods, tools and resources you can use.

2. Innovate More (By Reducing Your VC) :

Actively work to discover and implement quicker, cheaper and easier ways to deliver the same products/services to those who want them. Assume you previously could only turn out 1000 units of your product per month at a cost of $5.00 per unit(to sell at $5.75 per unit).

Then following a change in your procedures, suggested by one of your employees – who gets rewarded accordingly :-) – you are subsequently able to routinely churn out 1500 units per month at the same $5.00 cost per unit, the implications for your year end profitability are obvious.

Entrenching a continuous improvement culture in your operations will facilitate innovation – to your ultimate benefit.

Use Your Spreadsheet And Accountant

To reduce your VCs, you need to measure, record, analyse and trend your data. Many of the income and expense items you need to capture in your monitoring are likely to be the same ones your accountant/auditor would focus on in helping you prepare your end of year accounts for tax returns computation.

Therefore, at this stage you might find it useful to involve your accountant in generating the spreadsheet you want to use – or even have him give you one s/he uses, so you can adapt it for your purposes.

Justification For Using VC Reduction(Instead Of Price Increases) To Increase Profits

No matter how large your turnover or revenue is, control of your expenses is the only sure way to reasonably ensure your profits are maintained in the face of fierce/increasing competition, and/or market fluctuations. This is especially so, because you cannot raise your selling prices at will – else you price yourself out of the reach of your target customers.

Three(3) Practical Benefits Of Applying VC Monitoring/Control And Reduction Initiatives In Your Business

1. Long Term Affordability Of Your Products/Services

You will be able to price more competitively and still retain good profit margins even when market situations do not favour most other operators. You would have greater customer appeal. More customers are likely to be able to afford you i.e. your VC reduction efforts enable you price your products/service in such a way that they never become too expensive for your clients/customers.

Also, your ability to cut down your expenses without negatively affecting your product/service quality or delivery, will make it possible for you to offer lower prices/rates and depend on sales volume to sustain the same profit margins. The resultant increased customer base, will naturally afford you increased marketing opportunities, Enhanced ability to withstand/survive market place or industry fluctuations and so on.

This is easy to appreciate. A good example of a business that obviously has a competitive edge of this type in the market place is Richard Branson’s Virgin Airlines.

They offer some of the lowest rates available in the airline industry, often delivering about the same quality of service as their competitors – who may not all necessarily be too pleased about it :-). If Virgin did not have the means of sustaining this practice, while remaining profitable, they would have crashed out of business long ago.

I never get the accountants in before I start up a business. It’s done on gut feeling, especially if I can see that they are taking the mickey out of the consumer. – Richard Branson

2. Increased Assurance Of Sustainable/Increasing profits

Which would you prefer: More Revenue? Or more Profits? At the risk of stating the obvious, if you do not control your expenses, your revenue can increase without a corresponding increase in your PROFITS. One does not have to be in a business where billions need to be spent before knowing that this is true.

When two units – instead of one – of a raw material are used to produce 1 unit of your bottled juice, you are spending more to produce that bottle, hence your profit margin for that bottle will drop by the value of that extra unit of raw material used, be it with or without your knowledge.

Whether you know about it or not; whether you measure it or not is immaterial, and will not change the fact that you will earn a lower margin on that product.

If that then happens to many products(or a larger number of the same product), you may find at the month or year end, you get a shocking low profit declaration when you(or your accountant/auditor) reconcile expenses, revenues etc for the period.

Things could even fall apart before then. That’s when you see a company that gets plenty of business from old and new clients struggling to find money to run daily operations and make salaries payment(cash flow)!

This is why setting up a Variable Costs Monitoring/Control and Reduction System is important. It will help you keep a close watch on all the important measures of your business’ operational performance, so that you can easily, discover undesirable trends and nip them in the bud.

At the same time, you would be able to intelligently experiment with changes aimed at reducing your operations costs, and monitor their impact in order to decide whether or not make them permanent.

3. Greater Operational Efficiency In Using Labour/Resources/Time :

Uncover the invisible costs by using spreadsheet tracking. Some costs are more visible than others. It is those “invisible” cost channels that I refer to here. They are the “potential” profit drain pipes.

Do you know how to identify, monitor and control them in your business? Are you sure you’re not missing a few critical ones? Often times they are avoidable – should not be there – but because the business owner has no monitoring/control system in place, they build up over time, till they cause BIG problems.

Examples include theft/pilfering by outsiders or staff, materials over usages, idle/downtimes in different aspects of your operations, overstaffing, etc.

All these things can – and do – happen. The challenge is for the business owner or decision maker to setup monitoring systems to quickly throw up inconsistencies in the inflow/outflow etc of the concerned items.

Want To REMAIN In Business For The Long Term?

As more and more people go into business for themselves, every owner will have to contend with increased availability of the same products/services in the same market.

As has happened in the past, some will have done their operations management so efficiently that they will be able to drop their prices significantly below the market price(or refuse to increase them), and still make as much profit as (or even more than!) their rivals.

The latter on the other hand would struggle to match such price drops if their operating costs are higher – possibly resulting in their being forced out of the market.

This applies to one-man businesses as well as corporate multinationals, be they product manufacturers, distributors, resellers or service providers. The only people who don’t worry about cutting costs in order to give customers/clients stable or even lower prices, are monopolies(due to lack of competitors) and those who “buy their way” to new business.

For those who play by the rules, your ultimate objective, if your business is to GROW, will have to be to put money in your pocket, that you can spend without looking over your shoulder for creditors(or the IRS -. for taxes) and without running out of money to run your business(cash flow).

The wise owner will make a habit of continually exploring Variable Cost Monitoring/Control and Reduction initiatives, that will enable successful delivery of larger numbers of products/services at lesser cost, in lesser time, and using lesser resources.

I could go on, but I think the point I’ve made here is clear enough already. So much thinking/re-organisation will have to be done initially to develop the needed systems. But the process once started, can only get easier. And the positive benefits derivable from adopting this approach will be immediately obvious.

If You Remember Nothing Else, Remember The Following:

1. One good way to maintain and/or significantly increase your profits without raising your prices, is to reduce your Variable Costs(VCs).

2. You can reduce your variable costs by marketing more efficiently (getting more customers at lesser cost, AND maintaining them at lower expense).

I once read an article that proposed a new parameter COCS: Cost Of Customers Sold or Served). This could be adopted as a Key Performance Indicator(KPI).

3. You can also reduce your variable costs by innovating more(i.e. developing greater efficiency in your routine internal operations and/or product/service delivery).

That way, you would be able to produce/deliver more products and/or services with less effort, in less time, and using less resources. All of these would imply LOWER expenses/costs, leading to INCREASED profit retention per unit of product/service sold.

4. There is saying that : “You cannot manage something, if you do not measure it. Nor can you measure it, if you do not record it”.

Spreadsheet tracking will help you conveniently implement and sustain the process of monitoring, controlling and/or reducing your VCs. You will need to do this so as to constantly evaluate progress of your VC monitoring/control and reduction initiatives.

How to Avoid Wasting Money You Spend On Adverts

I sent huge amounts of my working capital down "newspaper advertising drainpipes", when I first started out, because I did not have a proper understanding of the important considerations for deciding on how and where to place my ads.

My thinking about advertisements, and how to use them to attract business for myself was terribly "confused".

As is very often the case when one has the benefit of hindsight, after making many mistakes and learning how it should NOT be done, I offer you the following ideas to consider in deciding how to go about getting marketing/advertising exposure for your business.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since we all differ in the way we look at issues, and of course in how we interprete the experiences we have, it is possible that you may not agree with some of the ideas offered in this article.

As I always say, THAT would be okay: Simply take what you need, and leave the rest for others to consider. Understand also that I make no promises or guarantees that the ideas you get from here will work for you.

It was not that I did not try to get help or advice from those I believed would know, but it was that – with the exception of a few – most people I met with did not somehow manage to get around to telling me(that is of course if they knew) what they knew about the subject, much as they tried to help.

Let me tell you a few things I have since learnt about cost-effectively getting marketing/advertising exposure for my self, through sometimes quite painful(AND "pocket-draining"!) experiences.

1. It Is Often Not How Big They Are, That Matters

Consider this true story. Back when I was in my teens, I was actively involved in competitive school/state level handball. At one time we had a team mate who was rather smallish(compared to the rest of us).

But he was so skillful that virtually everyone he played against had to make extra effort to keep him for scoring on EACH attack his team made. Over time he earned the nickname "Small but mighty" and all who had faced him in "battle" agreed that he was!

As I said in my article titled "How To Choose The Right Web Design Company", size does not necessarily equate to competence – or as is more appropriate to this article: "An advert’s big size will not necessarily make it more potent or effective".

It’s not so much the size that really matters, but how well crafted the message contained in the advert is. To arrive at what would be a well crafted ad, you will need to have built for yourself, in your mind, a clear "profile" or your target audience – demographics like age, income group etc.

Sounds simple and obvious doesn’t it? Which is why I felt stupid for not knowing it.

Looking back, I think I missed it because it required doing A LOT of up front THINKING before going out to pay for ANY advert. Unfortunately, THAT(i.e. "thinking") was not something I did not do much of in those early days after leaving a salaried job.

I just thought I needed to get out there, place the ads, and start responding to enquiries that resulted. Well, my empty bank account soon taught me to slow down – and learn!

What I write in this article, can save you needless, avoidable pains like those I had to endure.

2. You Need To Determine The Right Placement/Location

The placement/location of a well-crafted advert in the medium chosen can make or mar the advertiser’s efforts of getting the maximum possible exposure through it. Classified ad boxes can deliver quite good returns depending on your intended target audience.

You might want to study the different newspapers and magazines to see what type of adverts people place in them. A little 4.5 x 5cm ad box(like one of many that I came across in an edition of the UK Magazine "Management Today"), if placed on a page(s) readers know they can find advertisement, can get sighted/read as frequently as one that is a big as a quarter of a page.

But that’s not all. That kind of box advert very often has the potential of generating even greater returns for the advertiser, if complementary e-mail/internet marketing is used to support it.

3. Research/Use The Right Advertising Medium For Your Target Audience

You need to place your advert in the right news medium. Instead of putting it in a general subject news medium like many of the dailies, consider getting better exposure in a smaller, less widely circulated publication which is mainly consumed by persons likely to be interested in your product or service.

For instance you are likely to get better results by advertising in a paper newsletter titled "Weekly Insights For HR Professionals" sent out to HR Managers of companies in your area, than placing the same ad in a general subject weekly publication.

So, depending on the area of business you’re into, you will have to study extensively the most economic and effective medium of advertisement to use. A good method would be to approach those who have been using them and ask their opinion.

That most people use Tuesday Guardian does not mean you should. Sometimes, that edition can get too crowded that an advert not strategically placed to catch the eye as pages are turned will probably not be seen by any of those who need to see it!

4. What’s The Shelf-Life Of Your Intended Advertising Medium ?

Another factor to consider is the shelf-life of the medium you wish to place your advert in.
You must try to analyse how long you think it will take those you want to reach, to sight the advert. Most publications have a shelf life of 24 hours to one week depending on the type (some are weeklies).

You will have to consider this in placing your advert, because you want to be sure that as many as possible of the kind of people you want, get to see it before another edition is published and the old one becomes obsolete.

Summary – AND A Warning!

Most times you need to do A LOT OF THINKING BEFORE you decide on what advert type to place, and where. My experiences at a point made me decide upon adverts that announced my Excel VB products/services or Speaking/Coaching programs without date/time indication.

My website and auto responder addresses included in those adverts invited interested persons to find out more. This advert was then placed in a monthly publication whose readers generally had interest in the area advertised, and who often read old issues of the magazine.

Since the advert did not reflect a date or time, any reader of the old edition still found it appropriate to follow it up – getting me the prolonged exposure I sought.

Note that these techniques I have described/strongly advocated, help you to cut down drastically on your advertising expenditure. In many cases you might find that using website and e-mail marketing techniques effectively could on their own generate multiplier effects however, that is of course if the kind of people you need to patronise your business use the Internet/e-mail.

A FRIENDLY WARNING! Just in case you are "fortunate" enough to discover your intended target audience are NOT THE kind just mentioned above, I have this to say to you:

Going by the fact the fact that most advancement in societies/businesses across the world today, is technology driven, I would PERSONALLY be wary of spending much of my marketing/advertising budget targeting prospects who have an aversion for using PC/Internet resources!

Email to a Farm CEO About Powerful Reasons For Using a Blog

Today I sent an email message to a new Farm CEO client, who’d purchased my Monthly Poultry Farm Manager app.

The email was however NOT about the app or his farm.

Instead it was about a blog I discovered he created in 2012, then later abandoned, which I wanted him to know could be VERY useful to him, if used right.

If you’re not sure why, and how regular writing and/or blogging – done intelligently and with purpose – can help you, this article offers insights you can use.

Here’s the message

“Ekene”.

I just browsed through your blog experiment, and felt compelled to send you my impressions, and a suggestion…

I know your last post indicated you got the maiden posts contents from your course work.

However, from what I read, I get the impression that you’re likely to make a good go of non fiction writing in particular, and blogging in general.

The thing is that it takes time and plenty of DOING to get the hang of it, and make it 2nd nature.

But once you succeed it can prove a powerful self (and business) promotion tool – when done right.

I say this based on the many dimensions of name recognition, and sales/marketing benefits my regular article and email newsletter marketing brings me.

That’s why I wonder why you’ve not continued with “Beyond Quarantine” and other ideas you hinted at since 2012?

If it’s due to zero comments or reactions, to the ones you did, let me assure you it does not mean anything.

For many months after I started my blog in 2012, I got very few readers and not a single comment.

But I focused on adding new useful content weekly. Then later I began doing it daily.

However, I did not stop there.

I also went outside the blog to add useful creative content in satellite websites (e.g Youtube, G+, Facebook etc), using different media (e.g audio, video, infographics, slideshows etc) to attract more of my target audience to my blog and website.

Eventually, views ramped up, and some people began commenting, but most important and useful were the sales enquiries via my email address and website contact forms for my services and products.

It’s now over a year and a half since you did this blog project.

You could be thinking you don’t need it or the time is not right. Believe me when I say you would be wrong to think either.

Give what I’ve said some thought.

From what I’ve read in your posts, you only need to narrow down to the subject and theme you’re passionate about (mine is “Best Practice Performance Improvement in Key Areas of Personal and Work Related Lives” of my target audience members).

Once you know what to write about, and identify a niche of people who want it, and who would go out of their way to get it(including buying something from you), your writing/blogging success in ANY market or industry will be INEVITABLE.

Just my heart felt opinion…

HOW I FOUND THE BLOG?

If you wonder how I found your blog, it’s thanks to Google who sent me a notification asking if I knew “Ekene N……” and 2 other persons.

I followed the link to your Google+ profile and saw the blog posts and URL to the blog.

Amazing how the web works isn’t it?

Used correctly it can reliably deliver subtle, and timeless, yet potentially powerful content propagation at zero cost.

That’s why I use it so dedicatedly!

I urge you to do the same Ekene. And there’s no better time to do so than NOW.

In your service.

Protect Your Debit Card from Online Fraudsters…or This Could Happen to You (True Story) [Lost & Re-Published Post]

This article was first published on this blog 3 months ago, on Friday 23rd May 2014 (see browser history screenshot below). Today, when I tried linking to it, to post a comment on Facebook, I got a “Page Not Found” error on my blog. A MySQL database check soon revealed it was GONE: “Yepa!”!

This article was first published on this blog 3 months ago, on Friday 23rd May 2014 (see browser history screenshot below)

But I suspect no foul play. It’s quite likely it “got lost” during the back and forth cross-database updates from my old to new hosts following the loss of Spontaneousdevelopment.com (my former, 9 year old domain name).

Whatever the case, here’s the FULL article republished.

But just before you read it, here’s my comment on recent newspaper reports on this theme, which made me want to link THIS article from Facebook in the first place:

Punch Newspaper Headline (27th Aug. 2014): Fraudsters shop abroad with cloned Nigerian ATM cards

This is not the first such headline I have seen. When I saw one for the first time few days after arriving Lagos, from Cotonou (2 weeks ago), I found report headlines like the above hard to comprehend.

But now it’s all starting to make sense.

For fraudsters to successfully clone ATM cards, they will need insider help. And my recent personal experience equips me to piece together key parts of the puzzle…

This is why despite picking up my new ATM/debit card on arriving Nigeria about 2 weeks ago, I’ve been VERY reluctant to put it to use for my international web hosting and other payments online.

You see, just few months ago, the previous (now expired) card from the same bank, which I’d actively used without issues for 3+ years mysteriously got hacked and an attempt was made to use it for shopping by one “Rabbi” in “New York”.

Luckily, the card was not directly linked to an account that had enough funds to cover the transaction. That was a due diligence precaution I’d proactively taken earlier in the year.

But these guys were persistent (and wretched!) as they kept reducing the amount charged to the card, till they took out the less than $13 USD balance left over in the linked account from the last domain name registration and web hosting payments I’d funded it for.

I never understood how my card got compromised, and my bank also had no answer. So I waited for my card to expire – and it did on 31st July 2014. Since then, I’ve been too wary to start using the new one!

Then I came back here (Lagos) and began reading newspaper reports claiming some bank staff have been implicated in using customer cards online…and I told myself: EUREKA!

See article I wrote to warn/alert others to the potential danger:

===Now go on and read below===

Protect Your Debit Card from Online Fraudsters…or This Could Happen to You (True Story)

If you use a debit/credit cards, you may want to read about this experience I had within the last 24 hours. Why? Because doing so could just help you avoid leaving yourself open to having someone drain out your bank account!

I spent yesterday morning corresponding via phone and email with my bank in Nigeria…

It had to do with 3 International Transactions on my debit mastercard by fraudsters.

They began by applying a charge of $218 fee to my GTB MasterCard.

Since I use a Blackberry, I saw the alert announcing “Transaction Declined due to Insufficient funding” as soon as it came in.

They began by applying a charge of $218 fee to my GTB MasterCard.

Luckily for me, the account linked to the card (which is the one I also use to make payment for hosting renewal etc) is one that I keep almost at NIL balance.

I chose to do this based on past experience when I inadvertently let my Skype subscription autorenew when I did not need it.

Otherwise, that attempt would have gone through – and these crooks would have gotten away with it.

A bank account officer called me yesterday evening to discuss what steps I could take, after I emailed a complaint to them,

A bank account officer called me yesterday evening to discuss what steps I could take, after I emailed a complaint to them,

We agreed that I would continue what I’d doing, by keeping funds NIL until I need to use it, then once loaded I make payment to return it to NIL status.

That way, the fraudster would stand no chance of getting funds out if they try again.

As explained above the first attempt (for $218 USD) did not got through.

What I did not know was that my last transaction had resulted in about N1,500 being left as balance!

After discussing with the account officer who called me from Nigeria yesterday, the crafty guys charged $9.51 and then $5 USD overnight (between 2 a.m and 5a.m) successfully!

After discussing with the account officer who called me from Nigeria yesterday, the crafty guys charged $9.51 and then $5 USD overnight (between 2 a.m and 5a.m) successfully!

You see, I did not know my last online payment had left a balance that much, otherwise I woudl have spent it.

Normally I try hard to use up any balance to the barest minimum by loading funds to a reseller account I run for my web hosting service. But my exchange rate calculation for $50 USD equivalent was off, and I ended up leaving some funds behind, that the guys took out.

They must have kept lowering the applied charge all night or soemthing, until it went through.

Each alert I got, I sent an email to the bank, requesting that they do a reversal.

My account manager replied my email this morning saying I should authorize the bank to block the card.

My account manager replied my email this morning saying I should authorize the bank to block the card.

The problem is that I have 2 web hosting clients I need to do renewals for in July.

A new debit card may not be ready for me to use before then.

So after thinking about it, I’ve decided I’ll pursue one of 2 options:

a. Continue with my strategy of keeping my balance close to NIL, until I need to make payment, then fund it and use up at once.

b. From discussions I had with a banker friend, I can purchase a virtual Mastercard I can make use of on a one-off basis.

The second option appeals to me more.

Interestingly, I used to do that about 8 years ago. And it was always a much safer way to spend online. I guess I should thank the fraudsters for pushing me to THINK of a better way!

In case you wonder, I still have no idea how they got my card details.

I’ve always tried to be very careful these past 4 years of using it.

I’m not sure if this was done by Nigerian fraudsters or not. But the location on the transaction notices has been in the USA.

Lesson you can take away: Beware of linking your debit card to an account that has a FAT balance!

It would be better to be safe than sorry. I never imagined this could happen to me, and it has. Plus, I found out nothing could really be done short of disabling my card. In other words, even your Nigerian bank cannot help you.

Compare the case of my brother in law who lives in the UK. He simply told his credit card company to back charge or reverse the charge when it recently happened to him.

But that did not mean he would not be able to use his card anymore. Or that he would have to pay to get a new one!

Which is what my bank in Nigeria has told me. Not very helpful is it…!

So, if you’re in Nigeria, or using a Nigerian bank’s card for online payments, it would be safter to AVOID this kind of problem altogether, by not letting it happen in the first place.

Onee again the message is: Beware of linking your debit card to an account that has a FAT balance!

Please pass this on!

Why I Convert Video/Audio Interviews & “Informal Narratives” by Other Experts Into Downloadable PDF/Slideshow Versions for EVERYONE – Tayo K. Solagbade

This new personal philosophy paper offers download access to four (4) useful PDF documents I recently created using videos, audios or informal “writing” originated by competent experts I reckon with. They are Efe Ohwofasa (UK), Patrick Meninga (USA), Richie Parker (USA) and Charles Ayo Dada (Nigeria).

The first 3 can be downloaded from www.tayosolagbade.com.

“But why do I do it?” – many people are likely to wonder…

Why do I go out of my way to create these kinds of elaborate resources without being asked, and without seeking ANY kind of remuneration?

Is it to get publicity, or to get those I feature to notice me and give me jobs? What is my real motive?

  1. My main reason is that I want to help people discover proven techniques and strategies they can use to IMPROVE themselves in whatever area of endeavour they are engaged.

That’s why I call myself a Self-Development/Performance Enhancement Specialist & Multipreneur.

I have a passion that has endured for over 20 years (right from my days as a student in the University, through my time as a high flying employee in Guinness Nigeria).

My passsion is to help serious minded and results focused individuals develop and implement practical strategies to do what they do better.

Due to my versatility, and quick learning ability, I have over the years proven myself to be a valuable addition to the arsenal of any group or organisation.

So many people find me to be a useful resource because my active search for practical information about what works enables me add value to them.

Anywhere I go, whatever I see or read, my natural instinct is always to find ways to share it with others to help them improve their performance.

I’m the kind of person who cannot help HELPING others. I am naturally driven to be a catalyst. No matter who I interact with, I create the impression of increase.

People generally find that they leave me better off than when they meet me.

Most of my clients often get much more measurable value from interacting with me, than they pay for.

I work this way not because I want to be Pope, or because I’m a priest. I do so because I LOVE to see people make the best use of their God-given abilities to achieve their fullest potential.

NO MATTER what challenges they have to confront and overcome in life. And that is why I pick on videos and presentations of authentic achievers, whose messages convince me they are who they say they are.

Due to the challenges of poor connectivity in my part of the world, I realise many who desire to benefit from the wonderful video and audio presentations available online may not get ready access to them – except via text transcripts like those I create.

Yesterday, I uploaded the 3 part demo video (see below) I created using data supplied by the Algerian PhD student enquirer I mentioned last Saturday. Below, I share excerpts from the explanatory notes I then emailed him. If you own my Excel-VB Ration Formulator, or plan to get it, READING this post can help you greatly!

First Screenshot Demonstration Video of the Ration Formulator – Posted on YouTube on 27th Nov. 2011 [Over 53k views]

[NB: In case the videos are not clear enough, I’ve now uploaded ALL 4 clips of the much larger 4 part video to replace the ones below. Here they are…(the previous versions are still further down). Note that Video 2 of 4 and Video 3 of 4 are the MOST important ones you have to watch in order to fully understand how I formulated the ration]

New Video Part 3 of 4 – Ration Formulation using data supplied by an Algerian PhD Student Enquirer

New Video Part 4 of 4 – Ration Formulation using data supplied by an Algerian PhD Student Enquirer

The challenge I’ve had is that recent poor connectivity from providers out here makes it near impossible to upload the original videos “as is”. So I have to use conversion apps to reduce the sizes of my videos. Sometimes they turn out ok. Sometimes they don’t. When they don’t I do my best to upload the larger videos – IN YOUR SERVICE :-))]

Hi Hakeem,

Watch the 3 part video I’ve created showing how I formulated a ration using your supplied data below:

Note that I had to change the “comma” used as decimal point in your version of Excel to “periods” in my copy of Excel.

Click HERE to download a copy of the data.xls workbook containing the table I created and extracted data into.

Below: Screenshot of the app’s interface after the ration had been formulated:

Screenshot of the app's interface after the ration had been formulated
Screenshot of the app’s interface after the ration had been formulated

Like I told you, users must first understand how the app works, and then use it as recommended.

I deliberately showed the steps I followed from the very start, in a manner consistent with the instructions in the PDF (see pages 8 to 18 in particular) and annotated image guides I’ve sent you.

Click the links below to download the PDF guide and the annotated JPEG screenshot image guides:

File name = screenshots_RATIONFORMULATOR.pdf (place it in same location as the app)
A. guide-1-nutrient composition table.jpg
B. guide-2-Computing a Ration Formula Using the Excel-VB Driven App.jpg
C. guide-3-Error Handling to Ensure You Get Reliable Ration Formulas
D. guide-4-The App Generates THIS Print-Ready Pearson Square Formula and Diagram Page.jpg
If you wish, you can click the “STORE THIS FORMULA…” button on the spreadsheet, to load a stored formula that I already prepared, and try making changes to it, to get a feel for how the app works.
NB: See 2 additional screenshot images (PNG) I created to support the 2013 upgrade version
E. rf-flyers1.png
F. rf-flyers2.png

You will notice from the copy of your workbook that I returned to you, that I appended my app’s ingredient table format to the bottom of yours.

Then I used a function to extract relevant data from your table to fill the table for the app. (NB: The app can be extended/customized to accommate ALL the other parameters you have in your table – if you request that be done.)

Having done that, I then copied the extracted contents, now in the format matching the app’s “update feed ingredients” table, and pasted it into the table in the app.

[NB: DO NOT delete the “Mixture” label from the description field in the ingredients table. It needs to appear in the drop down menu on the form, so you can select it when you’re using MORE than one protein source.]

Next, I used the main menu to navigate to the Ration Formulation Interface, and began using the in-cell drop down menu to choose the different ingredients I wanted to use in the ration.

See the videos for the rest.

Remember: The key to making successful use of the app is to follow the recommended procedure for using it. The video I have just sent you shows that. I have stored the formula I derived, so you can recall it and play around with it (see my demonstration of how to call up the stored formula using the “Store This Formula” button on the spreadsheet.

Then you should be able to try deriving the same ration by doing what you saw me do in the video. Once you get the hang of it, you can then decide to formulate a different ration. In the video, you will see what I meant by usign the Pearson Square to derive the quantities of key variable ingredients you choose that will yield the target protein you want.

But that only helps you get started. You post those derived quantities into the computation table fields for each ingredient, then begin making adjustments to accomodate other variable and fixed ingredients needed to make the complete balanced ration.

That is where the TWEAKING I referred to comes in.

The app is meant to be interactive. You make changes and check the results, then using your knowlegde of the ingredients nutrient composition, and your desired target values (min and max) for key nutrients, you will reduce some and increase some until you get the nutrient ranges you want in the final ration. Again, you see me do that in the video.

Note that this version of the app can be extended:

(a) to cater for ANY number of nutrients in the ration and

(b) to do Least Cost Ration Formulation

(c) to carry out other data analysis and reporting functions you may request.

The reason I’ve left the app “as is” is because I let the market guide my development efforts.

So far, very little interest has been shown by my buyers/clients/users to adopt, for instance, a Least Cost Formulating version when I’ve asked them.

So, even though I began work on it over a year ago, I’ve not put much effort into developing it further.

I’ll end by saying what I said in the video: This video demo using your data, is the best I can offer. If you’re still NOT convinced the app can help, you I recommend you continue searching online for a suitable alternative.

I wish you well.

With kindest regards,

Tayo

Hakim responded that he’d successfully followed my instructions and formulated the same ration I had done using his data – but the app was NOT what he wanted. See his email below…

My thinking was always that if he could have those challenges comprehending my offer, and the solution, then it would be in my interest to produce material to aid him, and others who may have a similar challenge.

Yesterday, I got a call from one of 2 new Farm CEO buyers based in Portharcourt, and I told him I would be sending him the link to THIS post, and also to the smarter videos I will soon have uploaded to Youtube.

I am sure more people will find it useful, and in the long run, the time and effort it will take me to “sell” to prospects will be greatly reduced!

No. 156: To Succeed, Always Count Your Blessings During Adversity (Hint: Would You Work At Your Best If Power Supply Was Erratic?)

I am not sure how many of you on my mailing list
know what it feels like to endure YEARS of VERY erratic power supply
on a daily basis from your country’s power company.

That’s what Nigerians in Nigeria endure daily.

During my visits to Ghana (in 2005) and Cameroon (in 1999 and 2001) most people did not believe that in Nigeria, a person may go WEEKS without power – even as his neighbor continues
having it!

Why am I writing
about this?

Well, it’s because I want you all to understand
the conditions under which all the news, articles, reports and resources
you find on my website were created daily – especially from back in 2005, when I launched my former primary domain: spontaneousdevelopment.com

Today, due to the fact that I’ve relocated to Benin Republic (which also enjoys healthy uninterrupted power!), I do not have to endure the same hardship of working under the noise and discomfort of an electricity generator.

That is, except when I visit Nigeria for extended periods, as has been the case over the past 2 weeks!

In contrast to the way I work in Benin Republic’s Cotonou, many times here in Lagos, I have to work using generator power because the lights are often OFF longer than they are ON.

As
you can imagine, since I earn my living by building software, websites
and writing articles – all of which require a PC/access to the net and
of course electricity, I have to find a way to progress work given me
by paying clients if I want to make profits.

To make matters worse, since last week, the lights that went out have NOT come back on again. As a result we have to run the generator much more often.

So you find many people out here have to own
generators and buy fuel into kegs for use in these generators EVERY
single day.

But that would not be so bad if the fuel was always available
– but it sometimes tends not to be!

Every now and then Nigerians find that fuel shortages
cause long queues to build up at the fuel stations! A long vicious cycle
that affects this nation’s productivity and wealth generation severely.

I still recall coming home some months ago, earlier in this year. I had to buy fuel into 4 small plastic coke bottles at the border, to take home with me!

This was because of a prolonged fuel scarcity that made it impossible for my wife and kids to get fuel to buy. Yet I needed to do some work that night on arriving the house. So buying the fuel at N140 per litre (instead of N97 per litre) became necessary.

For those of you who live in countries
where your power supply is regular, it is likely you have no large markets
for generators and “kegged” fuels.

I want you to know how BLESSED you
are, that your country works that way, and you REALLY NEED to be grateful for it
!

The money that
should be left over in a barber’s pockets out here at the end of each
day very often gets spent on generator fuel and maintenance DAILY whether
s/he likes it or not!

At your end, the cyber cafe owner never has to
quickly run down stairs to switch on his generator because power supply
has suddenly gone off, and users browsing in his cafe may lose their
work online!

Now, this epileptic (or completely unavailable) power supply problem has always been a
feature of our lives here in Nigeria.

In the past two weeks, I estimate that I have not had light
for more than four hours in ONE single day – and even that was NOT for
a continuous stretch.

It is always a case of ON, then OFF, then ON again.
If you don’t believe me, come on a trip to Nigeria and stay in a hotel
for a few hours.

I assure you that’s all you’ll need – just a few hours),
and like a Ghanaian friend who was here on official work some years ago,
you’ll quickly learn that what I say is true from hearing the hotel’s
standby generator go ON and OFF, then ON and OFF …again and again!

On a lighter note, in your country the first
word that a baby learns to say may be “daddy” or “mummy”!

But in Nigeria, the problem is so severe that one of the first “words” a baby may learn to say is “NEPA!” – which
is what our power generation company(National Electric Power Authority)
is known by – though they now officially go by “PHCN” – whatever
difference that has made.

Having said all the above, despite all these challenges and limitations
in MY socioeconomic environment, many Nigerians keep forging ahead in
their work.

Like most other Nigerians in Nigeria, who were engaged in formal business, I had no alternatives while here (before I moved to Benin).

So I gritted my teeth (figuratively speaking) and focused on finding ways to get what I had to do DONE faster and cost-effectively by improving DAILY, for well over a decade.

The fact that I actually grew my client base and even began attracting attention from foreign based prospects from as far as Asia, Europe and America, indicates that I made progress in spite of this major limitation.

How
did I achieve all that despite these debilitating challenges posed
by the unpredictability of my social environment?

The answer is that I knew (and know) “How to habitually deliver peak performances by getting
into and STAYING in “flow” or the “Zone”.
If you want to know what that means, and how you can learn to
do the same thing, Google that article title and read it.

Final Words

I’ll end by noting that even though I made progress using the above, while in Nigeria, I knew I could make even better progress if I change my environment.

Eventually, I followed the creator’s guidance to relocate to Cotonou, on 1st April 2011, from where I have since taken my work to a whole new level – as can be seen on
my website and mini-sites on Excel-VB Software Development and Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas/Solutions.

My message is therefore that while you’re still unable to move to your preferred environment, resolve to make the most of what you have, where you are, like I did. The Creator who observes you will eventually lead you to discover and seize the opportunity that you need, like he did for me!

PS: In a Bid to Save Money, My Kids Have Learnt to Service the Generator Themselves

One more thing.

This power supply problem, I must say, has added some indirect benefits to my family. And I feel a need to highlight it, just to remind the reader that adversity often has some equivalent benefit that once can reap – if YOU pay attention.

When you’ve experienced severe lack of money like I did in the past, you come to see money as it should be seen: a guest that should be treated properly, so it stays LONG with you.

And that means watching your expenses and being frugal at all times. This made me detest the need to pay to have our little generators serviced by the mostly unschooled mechanics we called in every 2 to 3 weeks.

Each time I watched them at work, it struck me that they were teenagers like my first son. That told me he could also learn to do what they did.

So, whenever I came home from Cotonou, I began challenging him and his siblings to watch the generator mechanics at work to learn how to do what they did.

I told them to pay close attention so they could do it themselves.

And I promised to give them at least half of the money that would be saved if we no longer had to call the mechanics in: THAT of course got their attention!

As of today, 25th August 2014, they have not called in those guys for routine servicing of the generator for over a month.

Instead, each time it shows signs of faltering, my kids – the 15 and 13 year old boys specifically – (as I shared in a past article) take the generator apart, clean up the various parts, then re couple and start it: ALL by themselves!

And it’s working well. The way I see it, that’s one useful benefit my kids have derived from this nuisance of poor power supply.

At least they now have a set of real world relevant skills to add to their oven-less cake backing etc – that can open doors for them in larger society in future.

On 4th May 2014, Tayo’s 9 year old domain (Spontaneousdevelopment dot com), which hosted his website, was taken over by Aplus.net.

Within a few days however, Tayo used his advanced self-taught web development skills to build a SUPERIOR “reincarnation” of it the website http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

But updates are still ongoing to URLs bearing the old domain name in most of the over 1,000 web pages, and blog posts

he’s published.

Use Prospective Buyer Requests to Beef Up Your Marketing Portfolio (Hint: Features All In One User Guide for Tayo Solagbade’s Excel VB Ration Formulator)

At about 8pm this past Wednesday(20/08/14), I had a 10 minute phone conversation with Hakim, an Algerian Phd Student who’d contacted me (from Algeria) via my website about my Ration Formulator. By the end of the call, I sent him a 3 day time limited demo of the app, for him to test run. However, 24 hours later, he replied that he could not formulate a ration.

That was unusual. But I seized the opportunity to prepare additional comprehensive notes with links to all my demonstration videos, PDFs and annotated JPEG images for the Ration Formulator.

This article now offers a verbatim version of the notes I sent to Hakim – for use by others who may be interested in the Excel-VB driven Ration Formulator.

Hakim.
Thank you for your message.
I took my time to deliberately interact with the copy of the app’s demo I sent you, JUST to be sure it works OK.  And I can confirm that it does.

So I ask:
Did you download and unzip, then CAREFULLY read the through the 4 large JPEG diagrammatic step-by-step guides I sent you?

If YES, you should not have a problem using it, because they contain easy to follow instructions of how to use the app.
You must keep in mind that you need to FIRST understand how the app works BEFORE you can make successful use of it.

My Ration Formulator has been sold to buyers within and outside Africa since 2004. It has evolved to incorporate improvements that make it Excel-novice proof and VERY user friendly, based on feedback from past buyers.
Therefore what you got is actually a superior version of what I began with a decade ago.

It does NOT matter how you know how to do ration formulation. (You cannot enter formulas or modify formulas in my app. There is no need to. Simply post your data and use the controls provided to generate the formula you want.)

What matters is that you give the app what it needs to generate a ration formula you want.  Then if you want to check if the app’s result is CORRECT, use YOUR OWN method of deriving ration formula to DOUBLE CHECK and verify if what the app gives you is CORRECT or not.

This is what many other buyers have done, and even used to evaluate ration formulas given to them by university professors – with success!

However, my over 2 decades of experience developing apps for use by busy, working adults, who often are pressed for time, has taught me to make my user guides as easy to comprehend as possible.

And I also learnt to present the user guides in as many different formats as possible. The ones I sent you are the ones most people used to make up their minds in the past.

In light of the challenges you seem to have getting up to speed with using the app, I refer you to ALL of the guide resources now…

1. VIDEO TUTORIALS/DEMONSTRATION:

The following videos detail the sequence of steps to follow in order to use the app successfully, and correctly.
Pay careful attention to what is demonstrated, then use what you learn.

A. Starting up the app
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8B1yX8e-GY

B. Updating the feed ingredients table
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwm2evN7x50

C. Computing Feed Formula
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YWbqmh0MpA

2013 UPGRADE version – In January 2013, I sent out FREE copies of the improved version of the app, with features demonstrated in the videos below. Those features also appear in the PDF and JPEG images attached to this email.

D. Free Upgrade version that Stores and Exports Your Derived Formulas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99xm1EQJJdo

E. Free Upgrade version that Enables Ration Formulation 7 Additional Rows of Feed Ingredients
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChaF2MP0zEk

The above videos are found in my Youtube channel at:
youtube.com/user/TKSolagbadeSDAc

2. Detailed 20 page PDF User Guide Document: See attached to this email

File name = screenshots_RATIONFORMULATOR.pdf (place it in same location as the app)

http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/screenshots_RATIONFORMULATOR.pdf

3. ANNOTATED SCREENSHOT IMAGE GUIDES

If you did NOT download them using the 2nd link in the email I sent yesterday, find them attached as individual files to this email as follows:

A. guide-1-nutrient composition table.jpg

http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/guide-1.jpg

B. guide-2-Computing a Ration Formula Using the Excel-VB Driven App.jpg

http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/guide-2.jpg

C. guide-3-Error Handling to Ensure You Get Reliable Ration Formulas

http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/guide-3.jpg

D. guide-4-The App Generates THIS Print-Ready Pearson Square Formula and Diagram Page.jpg
http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/guide-4.jpg

If you wish, you can click the "STORE THIS FORMULA…" button on the spreadsheet, to load a stored formula that I already prepared, and try making changes to it, to get a feel for how the app works.

NB: See 2 additional screen shot images (PNG) I created to support the 2013 upgrade version

E. rf-flyers1.png http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/rf-flyers1.png

F. rf-flyers2.png http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/rf-flyers2.png

Note that you have to understand the requirements for making successful use of it. And those are explained in the video as well as the JPEG image guides and also my PDF screen shot tutorial guide.

If you DO NOT take the pains to patiently study the various guides and understand how the app works, and how you are to use it to get the desired ration formula, you will encounter difficulties.

However, if you still need help, I offer you a SECOND OPTION below…

While you do the above, you can also take me up on the offer below. Your choice…

If you wish, I am prepared to get ANY data you have from you, and record a video in which I use YOUR supplied data to generate a ration formula for you.

In other words, you can tell me what you wish to achieve (say you have your own ingredients with their respective nutrient compositions, and you want to derive a ration using those materials with a particular protein content %, Energy content etc.

Simply send me ALL the data you wish to use in deriving that ration formula, and I will record a video of myself posting the data you sent me into the app, and then go on to demonstrate how to use the app, working with YOUR data posted into it, to generate the ration formula.

Of course, we will be assuming here that the data you send me will include ingredients with the right combination of nutrient values to enable derivation of the desired ration formula.

Note that if you choose to have me do the above, I WILL subsequently put up the finished video on my channel (and website) for others to watch, so they can learn.

If this additional option appeals to you, send me the data required to make it happen, and I’ll get back to you within 24 to 48 hours with a link to the new video, and I will also email you a spreadsheet containing the final ration computation table generated.

FINAL WORDS: I always support all my buyers to make successful use of my products.

So many people have purchased this app, and I maintain contact with most of them till this day.
Many actually call to discuss alternative cheaper ingredient types they can use in formulating rations with my app.

In other words, it works for them. It will work for you if you take the pains to learn how it works and use it as recommended.
Like I said above, if that option interests you, send me your data and I’ll do a recording showing how to use them with my app.

With kindest regards,
Tayo

PS: If it happens that you have specific additional needs that the app does NOT currently cater for "as is", that would be a different matter. In such a case, I offer a development service to "extend" or "customize" the app to more than it currently does, or to do what it does differently to suit a buyer’s peculiar needs.

PPS: In anticipation of the possibility that some other prospective buyer in future may have similar challenges to yours, excerpts from the above email to you will be published as a new article on my blog. And I’ll subsequently email the link to such a person to read and act upon. This is why I NEVER find it hard to invest quality time and energy to address requests for information/support from anyone. 99% of the time, I end up better off, because I come away with NEW and USEFUL content to offer on my website.

Do let me know if you have any further queries.

Hakim did get back to me with a workbook of his data yesterday…Friday 22nd August 2014.

This afternoon I created a detailed 3 part video demonstration in which I used his data to formulate a ration towards set of target nutrient values he specified.

I will be uploading them tomorrow after which I will email him the links and publish a blog post with the videos on this blog.

As you can see, I’ve used this exchange with Hakim to begin creating an additional library of useful resources to further promote my Ration Formulator to new buyers.

This approach is what I have always used, with great results to show, over the past decade.

To succeed at what you do, I recommend you adopt a similar strategy.

No. 155: To Excel, Avoid Rigid Routine & Focus on GETTING RESULTS THAT WORK!

Last Friday (15th August 2014) a.m., at Mr. Biggs’ Maryland outlet in Lagos-Nigeria, I met – for the FIRST time ever in 2 years – with Enuenwemba Chukuyenum (Chuks) – a past buyer of my Ration Formulator app.

We shook hands, hugged, then held each other like old friends (see photo below), while my 15 year old son (who accompanied me as part of coaching I’m giving him) took a photo of us!

The Internet Is an Amazing Resource that Eliminates Boundaries

For those who have followed me online for a while, you most likely know I’ve come a long way since January 2002, when I left Guinness Nigeria to become self-employed.

And especially since July 2005, when, while on a 2 week exploratory business trip to Accra-Ghana, I commenced using article marketing on a formal basis to promote my products and services to a global audience.

Since then, I have developed my own brand of online marketing, which I call a “Web Marketing System” (WMS). And it has been instrumental to my ability to achieve increasing “marketing” visibility – leading to enquiries/sale to buyers within and outside Africa.

That WMS was what led Chuks (who provides high profile extension support to farm CEOs) to discover – via search engine results pages – the Farm Business Support solutions I offer.

We agreed to meet on that day, to discuss further about potential benefits of my Poultry Farm Manager software (watch 16 videos here), and a FREE talk I offer Farm CEO groups, titled “3 Zero Cost Strategies to Attract Profitable Buyers for Your Farm Products!

Isn’t it amazing how we’ve arrived at this serious level of formal business relationship, based ONLY on the use of my Web Marketing System?!

To Market Unique Solutions, Traditional Marketing Techniques May Not Work for You

To get where I am today, I learnt the hard way that promoting the unique range of products and services I offer rarely works via traditional channels.

In marketing software development and freelance writing solutions (like I do) even those who can afford to use them rarely reap profitable returns on their investment in TV, Radio, and Print media.

I quickly learnt the hard way, when I exhausted my limited funds placing ads in newspapers as a start-up.

The desire to do better however drove me to painstakingly test a huge variety of alternative channels.

Until I discovered I needed to develop the skills to leverage the web as a primary low cost business marketing tool.

Today, over 90% of my sales leads come via e-mail, face book, website contact forms, newsletter subscriber referrals etc.

Most of those who reach out to me in this manner often tell me they discovered me via Google. Especially through my articles or PDF reports, books and especially my SD Nuggets blog and You tube video channel (which hosts tutorial/demonstrations for some of my popular Excel-VB driven software products).

It Is NOT Easy to Succeed Using Unconventional Methods, But When Done Right, They Yield Profitable and Lasting Results

Now, I must say that even though the results today appear to be coming rapidly, it was NOT like that in the early days when I started out.

It has taken me lots of diligent and intelligent hard work.

To achieve similar results, you must be willing to work hard as well, and to also explore UNIQUE ways to apply your creativity.

Marketing is ultimately about creating positive perceptions in the minds of your target audience, to make them believe YOU can help THEM.

It does not really matter what you do or how you do it (so long as you’re ethical).

The RESULTS you get, especially in terms of the desired reaction you successfully elicit from your buyers, is what really matters.

The interesting thing is that most of what you need to do will rarely have been taught to you before you leave school!!

Below I use the true stories of 2 well known achievers to illustrate my meaning…

1. Breaking the Rules to Succeed in Business (The James Brown Example)

Over the weekend I (along with my kids) watched the movie about the life of James Brown: the Godfather of Soul.

In one scene, a member of his band who played the guitar questioned Mr. Brown’s instruction that they all play their instruments at the same time – like “drums”. He noted that some instruments, based on what he learnt in music school had to be played to “follow” some other instruments.

James Brown looked at him and said “How many hit songs do you have son?

The silence from the guy gave the answer everybody already knew: NONE.

Then Brown turned round and asked the rest of the band “Does it sound good?”(in reference to the unconventional playing of instruments he made them adopt).

They said “YES!”

And based on that he said they would play it the way he’d told them to.

We all know James Brown’s music influenced the evolution of MANY great musicians – including Michael Jackson, and our own Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

That’s proof that his approach produced the desired results, making others choose to LEARN from him!

2. Breaking the Rules to Succeed in Business (The Henry Ford Example)

The lesson I learned from watching the above mentioned move is the same as what one can easily take away from the story of Henry Ford, about the time when a group of journalists tried to use questions to make him look stupid.

As I read it, they argued that Ford being an illiterate was really not responsible for the success of Ford Motors. That he actually knew nothing and was in essence ignorant. And they believed it was the trained and educated engineers he employed who made him successful.

Each time they asked him questions relating to technical aspects of automobile manufacturing, Ford simply called in one of his employees who he knew was competent in that area, and asked him to answer the journalists.

Eventually, he told them he did not need to know such details about what it took to make the cars.

Instead what was important was for him to know how to find those who knew what was needed to get the different aspects done correctly, and then to organize them to work together to achieve that goal.

It was an answer that proved Ford to be a man of real education. One who knew that knowledge applied to productive ends matter more than abstract knowledge

James Brown – like Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison – had little or no formal exposure to classroom education.

Yet, each of these men succeeded by tapping deep into his/her creative God-given talents, and using it to supervise and organized formally schooled others, to achieve challenging goals they fearlessly set for themselves.

Each man demonstrated an impressive capacity for developing successful models that enabled them “sell” their products and services successfully.

For instance, the James Brown movie revealed how he readily challenged the “promoter” who marketed his records and shows.

At a point, rather than “stick with making music” and leaving the business to the promoter, he literally took over the promotion of his music, by (as he loved to say) “flipping it” – injecting his own money – to achieve unprecedented street smart marketing success in selling his music/shows.

Anyone Can Succeed Using Unconventional Business Methods

That’s a FACT. So, this is not something you have to go and enroll for some new course or workshop to learn.

Just be willing to search for useful information of low to zero costs strategies for marketing products/services on and off the web.

Then read and creatively put what you learn to use.

Develop the habit of testing what you try out in as many different ways as possible – until you find something that works. Then tweak that until you get it working optimally. Once that is done, find a way to replicate and reuse it again an again.

This is what I did, and still do today, to succeed.

I learnt to do so, by studying many others and creatively adapting what I learnt they did, to suit my purposes.

No matter how much success comes, however, one must NEVER feel s/he knows it all. It’s always a constant learning process!

Final Words: Ignore Rigid Routine & Focus Instead on GETTING RESULTS THAT WORK!

To end, I recommend that you avoid wasting valuable time trying to rigidly follow rules set by others.

For instance, some people say you must “get enough capital” before you start out.

The truth is however that so many people have achieved business greatness by building their wealth from the ground up. Most started out having absolutely nothing, except their desires!

Look back in history, and you will see that rules rarely remain determine success into the future.

You have a God-given ability to “sense” what will work for you. IF you immerse and diligently apply yourself in pursuit of your valued goal, that ability will become finely developed – or honed – over time.

By the above, I refer mainly to your intuition..or your sixth sense.

You were born with it. But you must DEVELOP it until it becomes a reliable “weapon” for use in narrowing down to solutions that will work for you.

So, if you “feel” the urge to change the ways things are done, to suit YOUR need to achieve, do NOT hesitate to do so.

Worst thing that can happen is you’ll fail – and that would only be temporary defeat. A few checks on where you went wrong and you’ll soon be able to try again, and again, and again, UNTIL you get it right.

Dan Kennedy, a revered expert in business marketing wrote a book titled “How to succeed in Business by breaking all the rules”.

The contents of that wonderful book further reinforce the points I’ve made above. You would do well to get a copy and read it from cover to cover.

For now, on the thorny issue of finding capital (to promote your products and services for instance)…

Below: Screenshot of some wise quotes – about capital/funding – from Dan Kennedy, that guided me to develop unconventional business marketing strategies responsible for a lot of success I record today:

[IMPORTANT NOTE:====

If you experience any difficulties finding a page or document, email Tayo at tksola dot com.

Click “Tayo, What Happened to SpontaneousDevelopmentDotCom ?” to read a detailed narrative about how the above event occurred :-))

Here’s an article Tayo wrote, to inspire others to defy adversity, and bounce back to even greater reckoning at what they do EVERY time:

And he wrote the one below, to explain why losing a domain name, no matter how old NO LONGER determines your online success or otherwise:

A Proven Strategy to Find Profitable Buyers Regardless of Your Domain Name

STOP Procrastinating And START Achieving The Goals You Dream About!

Every January, many people announce new year resolutions, but by December achieve little or nothing. I’ve had some intriguing characters PAY me to teach them web design, or Excel-VB, ONLY to leave wondering why I’m chasing them to attend agreed sessions: Funny world indeed! This article explains why you must make procrastination your enemy, and how to defeat it.

Why People Procrastinate (The Problem Usually Starts From Teaching Methods Used In Schools)

Back in school, many of us learned sciences. We drew pictures of the butterfly’s life cycle as it occurs during metamorphosis. But how many actually got to see the entire cycle take place IN REAL LIFE?

I’m not sure about you, but I never got to see a real-life butterfly’s metamorphosis(i.e. from the eggs to the larva – or caterpillar – to the pupa, and then into the adult butterfly) take place, till I left school!

And when I did learn it, it was by accident. Briefly, I took a caterpillar into my bedroom one day, and placed it on a leafy branch(broken off the adult orange tree from which I picked the caterpillar), which was set in a bottle of water.

Over time, the caterpillar ate the leaves, and I replaced the branch until one day it disappeared!

Upon noticing this, I searched all over the table on which the bottle was placed thinking it had fallen off. Until I discovered, under the table top, in a corner joining the table top to the frame, the butterfly pupa covered in its cotton like cocoon!

I promptly put a mosquito net around the table, so that when the adult butterfly hatched/emerged from the pupa, it did not fly off before I was able to see it.

My apologies to the reader if you did not do much biology or Integrated Science in school, where the reproductive cycles of some lower animals might have been covered.

The point I made in the first paragraph is that sometimes, in our conventional schools, learners are forced to memorize photos, diagrams and sketches of the animals or organisms they are taught about in class – without being shown real life examples.

Experience-Based Learning Makes Cramming Unnecessary

Is it not funny that this learning should have happened for me the other way round, considering that parents send their kids to school to acquire knowledge that they can then come to apply in the real world?

I honestly believe that is why Robert Kiyosaki’s ideas for educational reform are so worthy of consideration by any serious parents or educational practitioners.

Question is how many of us will take action to use those ideas to make a difference in the lives of the kids we raise, teach or coach?

The children in many conventional schools are seldom taken outdoors into the real word (nor are they encouraged or challenged to go out of their way after class) to see the real thing.

Instead they are made to read about the activity, and learn to say it as they read it, instead of describing it as they felt while they DOING it. Now, the irony of this poor teaching method is that when one DOES make effort to get a “real” life experience, recalling all the important aspects of that particular process becomes considerably easier. Thus the need for “cramming” is more or less removed.

I sometimes ask people this question: “If you were told to describe the process of making a cup of coffee, would you need to look up the steps from a book to do it?”

The answer I always get every time is “No”. The reason: “You’ve done it many times before”.

And there lies my point. Once we get into the habit of gaining real-life experiences relevant to any new area of knowledge we wish to explore, we will find that our resultant understanding would be comprehensive – and we would no longer need to do so much “cramming”!

Those Who Procrastinate Become Professional Students

Back to goals achievement. Some people attend seminars or workshops, and read books on starting up their businesses but never really start anything worthwhile. Such people in effect become professional students.

They keep attending seminars, reading books, “start” to make the plans, then stop. They never really begin.

Then there are those who do start, but learn from a book/seminar that they need to make some changes in order for their business to move to the next level. However, instead of doing it, they keep procrastinating – and end up never achieving their full potential.

Examples of people who are caught in this kind of “trap’ surround us.

It is the same thing for people in paid employment who desire career advancement, but fail to take the needed actions to improve themselves. Ditto for the one who wants to lose weight but cannot find the will power to deny THAT urge to eat between meals or “miss” exercising regularly etc.

For those able to take action towards achieving the desired end, they ultimately “grow up” to reach higher levels. And go on to achieve authentic success. That’s why some entrepreneurs always seem to be growing in their ability to take their businesses to a higher level, while some others always appear stagnant.

There is a great deal of difference between having knowledge and applying it. The teacher asked. “What is Agriculture?” The pupil replied, “Agriculture is just like farming, but farming is doing it.” – W.F. Weiherman

You Must Continue Learning, IF You Want To Keep MOVING FORWARD!

In a separate article, I wrote about people who record a measure of achievement, and promptly assume they have arrived at the pinnacle of success in their chosen area of endeavour.

Not only is this a faulty notion to have, but it is also potentially damaging, because it leads directly to mediocrity – a state of mind whereby ability and performance that can STILL be significantly improved upon, is continually celebrated as if nothing else is left to be done.

Any one who wishes to achieve goals that are worth celebrating, and that others will acknowledge as worthwhile, needs to rid him/herself of mediocre thinking. The mediocre is the one who does a little, and thinks there is nothing left to be done.

Those who are serious students of success know that success has been correctly described as a journey – NOT a destination.

Also, a person who desires success needs to perpetually HUNGER for knowledge that will better equip him/her to achieve that success.

In other words, s/he cannot be averse to LEARNING new things.

Once at a public gathering, Einstein found himself sitting next to a teenager who failed to recognize the world-renowned theorist at his side. Delightedly Einstein engaged the boy in conversation, and after a while, the boy naively asked: “What do you do for a living?” With typical modesty, Einstein replied, “I study physics.” “What, at your age!” the boy responded incredulously, “I finished that two years ago!” – Edward Hoffman, Editor, The Book of Fathers’ Wisdom Birch Lane Press

Some people – like the boy in the above quote – learn a little bit about something, and immediately assume there’s nothing left to learn. In our society, we have people who finish from university and conclude that they’ve done all the studying they need to do.

One amusing thing they do to show this is to throw away their university notes!

I have never regretted keeping my university notes for instance, because most of the stuff I wrote in the management research paper (Statistical Process Control and Target Setting) that got me to the National Finals of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s Young Managers’ Competition in 1997, (5 full years after I left the university) came from studying some of the concepts in those books.

Summary: If you want to achieve the goals you set for yourself at work or in life, procrastination must become your number ONE enemy.

You need to decide to stick with the target dates you set for achievement of each objective.

Use a checklist if necessary (e.g like my Planned Activity Tracking Sheet), and tick off each item as you achieve it. You will get a good feeling just from seeing a growing number of ticks on it! That feeling, over time, will encourage you to do more.

And before you know it, you will have a string of successes behind you, that can be a source of inspiration to others around you, who procrastinate, to break the habit once and for all :-)
