Sell What You KNOW for Profit – by Presenting it Professionally (True Story)

“Thanks Mr. Tayo for the visit, timely n wonderful. Thankx. Mr. K (name removed for privacy).”

[Lagos, 6p.m] I just returned from a 5 hour long visit to Lagos’ Oko Oba-Agege’s equipment suppliers, vet shops and feed mills. The above message was sent to me by a poultry farming expert I consulted there. So why was he thanking ME, when I was the one who went to consult HIM?

SMS sent to me by a farm business expert I visited in Oko Oba - “Thanks Mr. Tayo for the visit, timely n wonderful. Thankx. Mr. K (name removed for privacy).”

Well, like I tell people all the time, I adhere to a success philosophy that requires one to CREATE AN IMPRESSION OF INCREASE to everyone s/he comes in contact with.

Read on to find out how I did that, to the extent that this gentleman felt obliged to send me a thank you message after I’d left (NB: I strongly recommend YOU form the habit of doing same)!

Mr. K is a poultry farm business consultant who specializes in helping people start-up/manage broiler and poultry enterprises.

I found him when I did a Google search for farm businesses located in Oko Oba. I do this all the time when I wish to save time in visiting an area. Most people simply get dressed and go around asking for directions.

I happen to know that more and more farm business owners are taking the pains to put their business online via one or more platforms – often free ones. Most are not very web savvy, but they know the web offers potential benefits that can help them make more money or reduce operational (e.g. sales and marketing) expenses.

My search threw up about 2 pages of useful addresses, one of which was an abandoned facebook page setup in about 2 years ago, by Mr. K for his business.

He had posted a few updates and then stopped. But his mobile phone number was still visible.

I was browsing on my Blackberry, so I clicked on the phone number, and after 2 rings he picked up.

I explained to Mr. K, that I wanted to visit Oko Oba to consult with him and a few others, towards getting information to prepare an elaborate Broiler and Poultry Farm Business Plan for an old client, who wishes to venture into both areas.

This is an independent consultant client I’ve known since 2007, and who has hired me to develop several Excel-VB software for him over the years.

Now, he’s planning to retire from consulting to a property in his home town, which he wants to run the poultry business on.

Mr, K agreed to meet with me, and promptly gave me directions to find my way to his office. Around 12 noon, I arrive there, and he readily gave answers to all my questions relating to the data I needed for the plan I need to prepare.

In my usual manner, I went out of my way to find out how I could also add value to him – as a way of giving back…

I asked why he’d not continued using his Facebook page. He explained that he’d launched it to promote a broiler production project for a client, and once that ended, he’d stopped.

When he said this, I pointed out the fact to him that our meeting would never have happened if he had not left his mobile phone number on that page. I then added that many Nigerians today, readily use the web to search for information on how to start-up poultry and other farm businesses and that most were looking to hire a competent expert to help them begin.

I went on to tell him that if they encounter even a simple Facebook page regularly updated with useful information along the lines of their interest, they are likely to connect with owner of that page – if not immediately, then over time.

Quite often they would start by LIKING the page and monitoring the updates from it.

What I was saying was not theory: I promptly showed him a real life example of a Facebook page doing just that from Ibadan, in South West Nigeria.

This chap basically has built a captive audience of fans for his business on his page, and regular conversations are visible, in which they ask for his products and services, in response to offers he makes. And sometimes they simply thank and commend him for the useful information he shared (e.g. a Facebook note on a topic of interest) on the page.

Like I told the owner of that page, when I called him late last year to make my usual no-strings-attached suggestions, he can do SO MUCH more and reap even better monetary rewards, if he were to setup a system to automatically capture and use the contact information of his fans to reach them OUTSIDE facebook. So far, it does not appear that he has acted on my suggestion.

But even without doing what I proposed, it’s obvious the Ibadan based CEO is getting useful results from his Facebook page based marketing (click here to request the link to view his page)

I just do not like the rather manual, and non-viral/non-syndicated, Facebook limited nature of his model.

Having said that, I knew Mr. K would benefit greatly from adopting a similar model, which is basically zero cost. So, I showed him the Facebook page on my phone, and emailed him a link to it at the same time.

Then I forwarded 2 other emails containing links to other resources I send out to interested persons, which explain more about how to use what I call a Web Marketing System to boost marketing of your products, and also to sell your knowledge.

I told him that rather than simply let people make him prepare broiler production plans and have it free, promising to get back to him (which they rarely did), he could prepare a special handbook or guidebook on Starting a Broiler Production Business, and offer it for sale to those who contact him.

That way, when they call, he can simply offer a brief cost-free consultation and they say “If you want more detailed information, buy my information pack or e-book etc”.

No serious minded enquirer will say no to this!

But even if s/he does say NO, you can still say “Okay, I offer a one hour consultation session for say N5,000 or N10,000”. In certain cases you may choose to apply your discretion, and waive this condition, if you perceive the person is not likely to pull a fast one on you. I do this all the time.

What is important is to have a formal procedure in place for dealing with people who come to you for INFORMATION and/or EDUCATION which your unique experience and expertise makes you qualified to give.

Do NOT give everything away: You have the right to sell what you KNOW for profit. It is the key to lasting success and profits.

What I’m saying here applies to ANYONE in ANY line of business.

The key is to know how to go about it.

Note however, that no textbook explains how, and no limits exist to what you can do and how. If you need help thinking up ways to apply what I’ve said here, click here to tell me your unique needs.

Final Words: If you are good at what you do, there is absolutely NO REASON why you should not monetize what you know, to earn useful passive income – for LIFE!

No matter your field of specialization or vocation, even if it’s painting or broiler farming, if you’ve been at it a while, there will be knowledge and insights you have, that others lacking your experience and exposure will want.

In other words, apart from the physical products you offer, you should be able to earn useful income, for the long term, selling your “knowledge” (NB: I have been doing this for years selling my Feed Formulation Handbook and other information products listed in my online store).

However, your target audience will NOT know you have what they want, or need, IF you do NOT let them know.

Which brings us to the logical question: How do you let those who need what you know, discover that you have it?

That is what I have tried to explained to you in this article. Hopefully you can take what I’ve told you and run with it by yourself.

No. 175: Why Speakers Who Barter Products and Services Will Make More Money

Unconventional ideas, used intelligently, can yield superior results compared to “popular” ones. Years of testing ideas advocated by myriad experts, in my search for success have taught me that what WORKS, and NOT necessarily what’s popular, is what REALLY MATTERS.

This has made me a fervent advocate of seasoned, and highly successful experts like Burt Dubin, Terry Dean, Dan Kennedy etc.

In studying their works, I found they possessed the rare ability to NOT care about conforming with the majority…

Instead, they displayed a readiness to go out on a limb, if necessary, to test and find out what worked for them, and once they found it, they fearlessly put it to use, and taught willing others to do the same.

With the exception of Burt Dubin, who I have represented as Sole Agent for marketing his Speaker Mentoring products and services for a few years now, the other 2 experts, probably do not even know I exist.

So this is not some attempt to curry favours or seek recognition on my part.

Instead, my purpose is to point out, as we start this new year, that sometimes, sticking with what everyone else knows and does, may do you more harm than good, in your business!

You need to get into the habit of TESTING what you are told, to see if it really adds value to you, in the way you want, so you can achieve YOUR valued goals.

The fact that it works for some big-name-expert, does NOT guarantee you will get the same results!

That’s why TESTING ideas and strategies to see how they work, for YOU, is so crucial!

Today, I have gotten useful experiences under my belt, doing tons of testing, and emerged with my own original concepts, ideas and strategies for achieving the kinds of success I seek on a regular basis (Note that I continue to TEST…it’s a never ending process!).

Now, a key area in which I have reaped the greatest rewards has been discovering the use of “barter exchange” – an ancient concept – but used in a modern way.

I have used it in the modern way now for years, since first reading about it in several of Burt Dubin’s articles and reports over a decade ago. .

Basically, you have to keep in mind that sometimes you can sell more, if you’re flexible and open minded about HOW you get paid your stated fee or price.

In his articles, Burt explains that when he was still a speaker (today, he’s a renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid speakers), he often let companies that invited him to speak, pay in kind and/or cash, to the tune of his full fee.

Sometimes he got part of his payment in form of hotel accommodation across a weekend, for him and his wife, in the city the event would hold. The client could have a hotel in the city in which a special arrangement enabled them get FREE rooms for a limited period, for their staff.

This tends to make it easy for the buyer/client company’s decision to commits, since s/he may have other things that limited funds need to be spent on.

Or better still, s/he could then use the savings from that barter exchange to purchase some other product or service YOU offer that they would not have had the funds for if they had paid your full fee in cash!

In other words, bartering your products and services can make it easier for you to not only close sales, but also to attract repeat – or additional purchases – from the same or other clients (since delighted clients are likely to tell potential others)!

Even farm business owners can use this barter approach (e.g to cut down Variable Costs) as I explain in my guest post on http://www.africabusinesscommunities.com titled “5 Proven Ways to Boost Farm Profits without Raising Prices“.

I have written several articles in the past, in which I shared stories about how I used the bartering technique to win client projects and walk away with physical products I went on to sell (see below).

True Story No. 1:

Some years back, a small Telecom & IT equipment installations company in Ikeja, Lagos, wanted me to build a Web Marketing System (WMS) for them.

When the CEO asked for a discount, I proposed a barter exchange that would enable them pay me part cash and part via a product they already had in stock.

He was open minded enough to let me explain further. They had a new subsidiary that did beautiful Heat Transfer prints on T-Shirts. I told him I wanted some branded T-Shirts made in bulk.

So we went to the printing room and I pointed out the white T-shirts they had in bundles, then showed then my high resolution Eyo Masquerade graphic on my flash drive, that I’d modified in Photoshop based on a friend’s Pointillism artwork.

My request was that they print my design onto enough of the T-shirts that would total 50% of my fee for developing the WMS for them.

The operatives did the calculations and announced that I would get 70 branded T-Shirts, ready to wear or sell.

That was good by me. I would NOT have to buy ANY materials, neither would I need to do any hard work printing anything. They would do it all and hand them over to me once I was done with the WMS.

So, it was agreed.

And here’s the best part: I got the 50% cash in advance, and the T-shirts were put on record as the balance I would get on job completion!

Since the work to be done in developing the WMS was a service that required no significant expenses (other than my internet costs and generator fueling), this meant I was more or less eating my cake and having it.

Yet, the client was also happy to be able to pay much less cash than he would normally have had to part with.

Isn’t that just great? I think it is!

There are no rules about how one can barter, or what one can barter!

Yep. And that means your only limitation is your creativity.

In my case, I’ve taken a lot of what I learnt from Burt, and added several twists, over the years, to come up with new ways of doing it. This especially to leverage my own unique skills as one who creates a unique range of high profile digital products like my Excel-VB software.

Which bring me to True Story No. 2:

Last month/year – on 1st December 2014, a Filipino gentleman (Nelson) who works with a company in Abu Dhabi, but runs a piggery business back home in the Philippines, purchased my Feed Formulation Handbook PDF from my Lulu.com online store.

He did so on my recommendation, after we spoke on phone.

In actual fact, he’d contacted me asking about my Excel-VB driven Ration Formulator software.

However, after speaking with him, I’d advised that since he did not have formal knowledge about the science of Feed Formulation and Compounding, that he first buy my handbook and read up on that.

But our conversation also revealed a potential problem, which has affected other international buyers.

Since he was outside Nigeria, in order to buy the software, Nelson would either have to send payment via Pay pal (through a 3rd party – my brother in law) or Wire Transfer (which is not so reliable and tends to take long).

Neither option sounded appealing to him, from the response he emailed me. He ended by saying he would get back to me, once he decided.

Later in the month however, I was sending out my usual Xmas/Year end promo offers to all past buyers and subscribers, when it occurred to me that I could ask him to pay for the software, by purchasing physical copies of some of my new paperback books that I just published with Lulu.com, and shipping them to me (through my brother in law who lives in London)..

The books are available in my online store for delivery to the doorstep of a buyer anywhere in the world.

I had been planning to order copies of some of them (like my Speaking IDEAS book and my Best Practice Parenting book titled “Kukuru Danger”).

This was because I wanted to give out as gifts to a few relatives and my kids. The opportunity to have the physical books without spending ANY money from my pockets therefore instantly appealed to me, and I quickly drafted a modified version of my Xmas/Year End promo and emailed it to Nelson.

Not only did my offer afford him a considerable discount, it was also a SAFER alternative compared to sending money directly to me – since he had to “buy” from Lulu.com’s secure platform.

On 30th December 2014, he sent an email confirming that he had taken up the offer and made the purchases, for delivery to my brother in law’s home in London as I’d requested. Click to see the screenshots of the invoice, he sent me in this article.

So, now we wait for confirmation that the books have arrived London.

Once that happens, I’ll simply email him the download link to his personalized copy of the Ration Formulator, its PDF user guide and the 4 video tutorials.

If I had not employed this barter strategy, it’s likely Nelson would probably still TODAY, have been trying to make up his mind how to send me payment for the software.

But this barter option I gave him helped him decide quicker. Plus, I’m now getting copies of my new books that I need!

Meanwhile all I have to give in exchange is my Excel-VB Ration Formulator software that I’ve been selling since 2004 – digital, zero cost item!

Final Words: Anybody can use the ideas I’ve shared above!

So many possible applications can be explored – and it will not matter what field you are in.

As an expert-who-speaks, you can really make profitable use of this “barter” approach to win over more clients, and rake in more money.

All you have to do is keep an open mind.

In 2015, the ability to do THAT (i.e. keep an open mind), and also constantly think outside the box, while NEVER letting yourself be limited by the opinions of others, will help you excel way beyond the limits you (think you) have!

An Online Presence is NOT the same as a website. It’s good to have the latter, but it’s BEST to have the former. Sadly, many business owners do NOT know the difference, and focus only on a website. I explain how they differ, and why investing in an Online Presence guarantees YOU Superior Selling Success in 2015, and beyond!

1. A website is one entity – a specific location online – where information about you and the solutions you offer can be found.

Typically, it will be accessible via a URL e.g. www.boostyourfarmprofits.biz (for my Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas website) or www.tayosolagbade.com (my flagship website).

If you have ONLY a website, potential buyers (who do not already know you) would need to discover that website to learn what you can do for them.

This can happen if it gets indexed by search engines, causing it to turn up in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

Many website owners take advantage of FREE website submission services provided by the engines – Google.com being the most popular. They also do submissions to FREE directories and also post FREE ads on forums etc. Some people also place ads online to make their websites get found, but I’m focusing here on zero cost website promotion tactics often used.

Having said the above, in today’s competitive marketplace, a website ALONE is no longer enough to generate the marketing reach and impact needed for selling success.

Some questions for you, if you currently have ONLY a website…

What does your website do for you?

Does it bring more money into your business or is it a drain pipe for your profits?

If you’d like it to help you make money, at zero cost, keep reading.

2. I define an Online Presence as a collection of specific locations online where information – presented in multiple friendly formats – about you and the solutions you offer can be found.

Notice the difference from a website?

In this case, there is more than ONE location where information about/related to you and what you do exists.

But not just that – the information is presented in a variety of formats.

Most importantly, unlike when you have ONLY a website, having an ONLINE presence means potential buyers (who do not already know you) would be able to find you and discover what you can do for them through a variety of different channels. That dramatically increases your chances of getting found – boosting the likelihood of sales conversations happening.

Every business owners wants that!

To achieve superior selling success, you need what I like to call an Effective Online Presence (EOP) or what I call a Web Marketing System.

By this I refer to a collection of intelligently interlinked locations online where information – presented in multiple friendly formats – about you and the solutions you offer can be found.

I like to call it a Web Marketing System (WMS) because that term, for me, better captures the value it delivers.

Now, like I have repeatedly said in many of my articles, a Web Marketing System (WMS) has several key components, four (4) of which I always recommend that EVERY business owner ensure s/he adopts.

Those key components are shown in the mind map displayed below:

From the above you can see that a website is only ONE of the key components of a Web Marketing System (WMS) or Effective Online Presence (EOP).

But it is not the most important. The website is just one of several platforms from which your sales and marketing information can be presented and propagated.

Note also that it’s not just any website we’re talking about here. In a WMS, what you have is called a Response-Generating Website i.e. one that gets the target audience to take the action that YOU want e.g. to contact you or at least leave his/her contact details (by subscribing to an offer on the site).

Now, more critical to the selling success of a WMS or EOP, are the other components i.e. Search Engine Attracting Article Writing, Sales Leads Generating Email Newsletter Marketing, and Traffic Building Blogging and Social Media Marketing.

The above mentioned, and others shown in the mind map, have the effect of boosting your ability to get noticed for what you offer, even when you are NOT there.

In other words, they present your content to potential buyers in a cumulative manner, so that nothing goes to waste.

For as long as you keep adding more to them, the new stuff gets put on the existing stuff, adding to the visibility and impact of your work. Simply put, each time a person considering buying from you encounters your WMS, s/he finds that there’s often something new and valuable that’s been added since the last time s/he visited.

Over time, the psychological effect of this is that s/he feels drawn to make contact with you.

I say all of the above based on the successes I achieve on an increasingly frequent basis using my own WMS or EOP.

Many of my clients today, within and outside Africa, found me via various parts of my WMS – my Google+ page, my Youtube Video Demonstration Channel, my Excel-Heaven Facebook page, my Daily Multidisciplinary Blog, Ezinearticles.com, my Guest Posts on other websites and even my Twitter page.

Note that several of the above channels are automatically updated based on content I publish on my Daily Multidisciplinary Blog. This saves me major time and effort sharing new content I have – while giving me considerable visibility and name recognition.

But the most crucial job they do for me is that they work together to influence more of those who encounter my content, to contact me, thereby adding themselves to my database of Pre-qualified Prospects.

Pre-qualified Prospects are people who have already indicated interest – by reaching out to you – in the solutions you offer.

These people have let you know, by so doing, that given the right terms and conditions, they are likely to part with money to get your products/services.

If you really want to achieve selling success, your EOP or WMS must help you GROW your list of Pre-qualified Prospects. The more people who add themselves (with their contact details – name, email, phone numbers etc) to your database, the more people you have that you can make sales offers to, with increased assurance of making a sale.

Basically, you would be doing what I call “Subscriber Web Contact Form Data Mining” – see details in my article titled “Using Your Blog To Make Money – Little Used Strategies You Can Exploit – No. 4 of 4“(Click to read).

Once you have an EOP or WMS that enables you do the above, your ability to close sales will dramatically improve.

This is because you will basically have a captive audience of people looking for the solutions you offer. It will not be up to you to THINK up creative ways to MINE that database of subscribers for the sales you need.

PS: Key Assumptions on Which the Above Ideas are Based

In discussing the above options, I argue, and have done so for years, that business website owners from our part of the world (Africa), whose primary target audience is NOT in developed societies are not likely to get returns on paid online advertisement as rapidly and reliably as our those over there.

This is because the web based buying behaviour of people in Africa is very different from that of people out there. My experiences and achievements as an African who sells mainly digital products and services to buyers in both parts of the world convince me that I am right.

I have tested this repeatedly, and found that it is more prudent, for the long terms, to employ zero cost web marketing, like the one I advocate here, than to invest in paid online advertising, especially when seeking cost-effective and sustainable/long term selling success.

Keep the foregoing in mind in evaluating the ideas I’ve shared here.

To Succeed Smarter You Need a Do-It-Yourself Mentality

[Photos: House painting after Christmas day 2014, with my sons] Unlike when I relocated ALONE in April 2013, moving my family from this Lagos apartment, to join me in Cotonou, has (not surprisingly) been a less straightforward matter, on multiple fronts, from the kids to even their grandparents!

But it’s progressing, slowly. We’re disposing old stuff etc. 2 days ago (Xmas night – 25th Dec. 2014) from 8.30 p.m till 3.00a.m (Yes, past midnight!) we applied the first coat of paint to the outside walls, inside the kitchen, bathroom and toilet etc.Tired but hungry, we cleaned up, had our baths then ate pancakes and plantain, before going to bed. The kids were so excited! 6 hours later, at about 10a.m we were back at it, applying a second coat (see photos below).

But why paint a house we’re soon to move out of, you may wonder?

Well, you see, my rental experiences in the past 19 months (and 2 house changes) in Benin Republic have exposed me to a practice diligently adhered to by property owners and their tenants, which I find personally agreeable.

In the tenancy agreement signed by both parties, a clause is always inserted to the effect that before leaving, the tenant will restore the rented property to the original state s/he took possession of it at the start of his/her tenancy.

That will typically be determined via a joint pre vacation inspection. Sometimes only repainting of certain areas may be needed. At other times damaged fittings etc may have to be replaced.

Simply put, the exiting tenant has to hand over the property in as close as possible to the same state it was handed over to him/her.

Now, in Nigeria, this practice exists, but is not implemented in the same formal and detailed/elaborate manner as I’ve seen done in Benin Republic.

But, I have resolved to do it, as done in Benin even though the tenancy agreement I signed with the owner of the place we live in Lagos, does NOT require it.

Here are excerpts from a letter I sent to the agency, in September 2014, shortly after I spoke with him, when he came to do the pre vacation inspection:

My work is 80% PC and Internet based (See www.tayosolagbade.com). I need reliable power supply. And to be productive, I’d rather not have power and work against background noise of generators. This was why I moved to Cotonou, on 1st April 2013, and I’ve been able to work without those annoyances – with MAJOR progress as a result. And that’s why I’m moving my family to join me there.

But like I told <agency staff’s name> when we met on Saturday 16th August 2014, I already resolved to restore the apartment as close as possible to the condition in which it was when my family moved in.

Specifically, the broken fittings (sink, kitchen cabinet etc) will be repaired. And it will be repainted. As I explained to <agency staff’s name>, I believe it is only fair to <property owner’s name> that I do this. Incidentally, it is the practice here in Benin.

For instance, I had to repaint the bathroom of the self-contained apartment I vacated after staying there a year – in line with my tenancy agreement. In the larger apartment I’ve now moved into, in another part of town, the same clause exists in the agreement I signed. Since I plan to own my own property in the near future, I want to treat others the way I would like my property to be treated.

Now, another reason why this painting exercise in particular appealed to me is that it provided a useful opportunity to teach my kids to do it i.e house painting.

Most people in our part of world don’t know much about painting, and few are keen to learn.

Indeed some believe it to be beneath them to engage in such an activity that can get rather messy. So they prefer to pay others to do it.

I however believe that attitude is a mistake.

On my part, I tell my kids how learning to do stuff like that by themselves can help them save money to be paid to painters. I also point out how learning to do it can even equip them to make quick money on the side, in future, by doing simple painting jobs for others who are unwilling to do it themselves.

You see, it is my considered opinion that not only do we need to develop our DIY (Do-It-Yourself) abilities, to succeed better, we also owe our kids an obligation to equip them to do the same.

Simply put, I’m saying we can boost our ability to succeed in the world by learning to do more for ourselves, by ourselves.

My conviction is not baseless. I have relatives and friends living in the UK and USA, and while in Guinness Nigeria, I worked closely with several senior colleagues/bosses from the UK.

I also traveled across England, Wales, Scotland and other parts of the UK in 2000, attending an international brewing course organized by the UK based Institute & Guild of Brewing.

My conversations with those relatives, colleagues and associates revealed that most people in their societies strive to develop a DIY habit because of the high cost of skilled labour.

A former expatriate British boss in Guinnes once told me he owned his own welding machine because the fees one had to pay to call in a welder were prohibitive. That made it cost-effective to own the equipment and learn to use it.

Another expatriate senior colleague whose home I visited in London showed me his kitchen cabinets, which he proudly told me he built and fitted by himself. My own older brother, who lived in London at the time, when he later moved to Lagos, to start a new business, displayed a propensity for fixing things in his home by himself, for the same reasons.

I still recall watching with a mix of amusement and curiosity each time he opened his toolbox and took out/began using electric drills etc around his apartment. He told me the same things the other persons said: he adopted a DIY approach because it was prudent to do so – financially and otherwise.

Back home in Nigeria/Africa, because most people who do jobs like carpentry, plumbing, painting etc, are often not well schooled, we know we can get their services relatively cheaply, or so we think.

What I have however learnt is that in the long run it all still adds up.

That’s why today I also employ the DIY approach as often as possible – and it’s paying off.

This is Tayo Solagbade and today is 22nd of December 2014.

We’re approaching the new year, and in my normal end of year ritual, I’ve been calling a lot of my subscribers and past buyers – farm CEOs mainly, who use my products, my software especially for farm business management – maybe the Excel-VB driven Ration Formulator or Poultry Farm Manager.

And some have bought my handbook on Feed Formulation and things like that. As I normally do every year, I call on them and ask what their plans for the new year are, what goals they have, how I can help…and of course I usually make an offer:

I call it a Christmas Gift offer in which I just give some ridiculous crazy discounted rate for them to acquire one of my products or services or products and services. The objective is to forge a closer connection with each one of them, and of course to just get them talking about me.

So I’ve been doing that in December. I’ve been in Nigeria now for at least roughly 4 weeks and a half or so, and it’s been interesting to talk to them about this year’s offer, because over the years, I’ve come to the realization that a lot of farm CEOs.

Note that the ones I work with are not the ones that carry hoes around(no offense intended – just clarifying).

Most of my clients or buyers or members of my Farm Business IDEAS club are people who run medium sized to large sized farms, and mostly in livestock production, especially fish farming and poultry farming.

And many of them have…they use smart phones they use laptops, they are technology friendly and more often than not, these days I have found that more and more of them are actually people in paid employment in big companies who are running businesses part time, probably managed by their spouses, and they are generally people who travel a bit.

So these are guys that I feel can operate at the level I operate, and I realize that they need to understand that they can use technology much more intelligently, to succeed better at what they do.

And many of them don’t realize this.

I think one of the big challenges we have in our part of the world here in Africa, especially Nigeria is that people don’t know that farm business doesn’t have to be same old crude, drudgery filled activity that the peasant farmers are known for.

If you’re going to …I mean a lot of these guys make millions in a month…okay maybe hundreds of thousands in a month, producing these animals, these farm products.

So, nothing stops them from reaching out to buyers who will give them better returns for their efforts.

One of the things that has driven me to this year make the offer of helping them to make more use of technology, especially the use of the Internet to find buyers, at zero cost, so as to cut down their Cost Of Customer Acquisition (COCA) is the story I read in the Vanguard newspapers earlier in the year, where a group of farmers in Plateau state …I think it was the Poultry Farmers Association approached the MD, the Managing Director of Grand Cereals and requested his help in mopping up what they called an excess production of eggs, because they said they had a glut in Jos or Plateau state as a whole.

And I recall feeling very odd when I read that report. I said the Nigerian market doesn’t even have enough eggs. So what do they mean that they have a glut? Where is the glut?

So, I called up some of my clients who is based in Jos, I spoke to one of them – Bitrus – and I said “Look what is this thing about a glut not enabling you sell, and then you needing somebody to mop up eggs from you at all cost so you can keep producing?”

And he was telling me “You know Tayo when you go from 2, to 3 here in Jos here, you will find 2 houses or homes they have poultry farms.”

I said “So what? The thing is must you sell only to buyers in Plateau state or Jos? Why can’t you reach out to buyers outside your state.”

And he didn’t initially get what I was trying to say. I said:

“Look, nothing stops you from reaching out to buyers outside your state and getting them to come and pick up eggs from your farm.That’s one. Then two: Even within your state, it is possible that you’re missing the point. You don’t need to make yourself vulnerable and exposed to people who are going to come and buy units of egg trays from you.

You can actually reach out to organizations and individuals or businesses that require eggs in large quantities or bulk periodically, and then have an arrangement with them to pick up eggs from you, on the understanding that they will get some price concession or benefit. The point is you don’t have to go the traditional route to sell your farm product.”

So, when I said that he said okay. I told him I would send him some materials as a gift.

So I sent him, I think it was a story, about a gentleman somewhere in South West Nigeria, who used one of the online forums …popular online Nigerian forum, to – over a period of about 9 months – build up what you could call a thread of conversation, in which people began to request to have him send his truck, his bus, to supply them eggs in different parts of the country.

It didn’t happen overnight, but over a period of about 9 months, what he did was to successfully attract people using this platform, free.

Not his own website now, some discussion forum, where people were responding to pictures he posted of eggs he had, which were quite big and then the offer he made to supply in bulk at reduced price, and all of that. He’d bought a brand new bus and put the picture of the bus, and he did this.

I followed the thread of the discussion from 2012 into 2014, and it was amazing to see that in 2014 when he got somebody who now came and said he wanted him (the Farm Owner) to supply eggs to them in, probably I think PortHarcourt or something, he had to respond and say:

Look I’m overbooked. I have people who come now to the farm and pick up the eggs at agreed rates, and there’s actually a queue of people. And so if you know you want to get on board you will have to come and do the same thing, because I no longer supply to people off farm. They come and pick it up.

Now you can imagine what that would mean for that man. First of all the Cost of Sales would drastically drop. The stress, the amount of work, time, effort that would go into marketing and selling his eggs would have dropped considerably. I’m sure that would mean major, major, major gains in terms of profit margins retained in the business. And most importantly the headache, the worry about how are you going to get these eggs sold off would have been eliminated for this man.

So unlike other farm business owners who produce eggs and birds and then begin to worry about how they are going to sell them off, because those market women come and begin to give them all these ridiculous conditions to buy the eggs and chicken off them, this other person is actually finding himself in a position where as he produces, the thing is being mopped up.

Now that’s the way a farm business should run, because if you’re going to maximize the capacity, that is maximally utilize the capacity of your farm business, for instance your poultry farm enterprise, you need to be able to have a ready outlet for the eggs you’re producing, and the birds that are ready for sale.

Be it table birds like broilers, or turkey or whatever else. And of course the old layers you need to get rid of because you need to bring in the next batch Point Of Lay birds – Pullets – to start production again. If you have a farm enterprise, you’ve got to be able to ensure that your Turn Around Time or Cycle Time, is optimal. That’s when you’ll really be able to reap the possible maximal returns on your business investment.

A lot of people don’t have that.

If you don’t have control of your marketing, of your sales, you’re going to have big problems running a livestock business enterprise.

If you don’t secure that ahead of time, when you start producing, way before the products or birds are ready for sale, you’re going to have big issues making your money back.

You’re going to find yourself sometimes feeding birds that are supposed to have been sold out, or unable to find space to stock your eggs because you can’t get them sold at the same rate at which you’re producing.

In today’s world, there’s no reason why any farm CEO should have to go through that.

And that’s what I’m trying to say here to farm CEOs. They need to begin to think intelligently. A lot of them use Smart phones – pretty powerful devices, laptops, they are Internet connected and everything. And yet they don’t leverage the Internet to do this.

It’s nobody’s fault. This is not to say they are not as smart as they should be. The point is they just don’t know the power they have in their hands.

And this is where I come in.

What I’m trying to do starting from now into 2015 and beyond, is to begin to let farmers see that they can use the Internet intelligently, to achieve better marketing output.

And not just that, but also to position themselves in a manner that will enable them generate passive income streams for themselves.

Look, a farm CEO is a consultant. If you run a farm business that is profitable, you are an authority at what you do. What you’re doing is what somebody else who is in paid employment is worried about establishing and succeeding at.

It therefore means that if that person wants to come out, you are in a perfect position to provide consultation – PAID consultation – service to that person. You can train people, you can give people induction to be able to succeed in their own farm businesses based on your own experiences and achievements.

But how do you get them to know that you can do that for them?

If you use a properly setup web platform, you will be able to offer that and generate what is called PASSIVE INCOME. Active (non passive) income is the one that you’re generating when you have to work, you have to run the farm, you have to supply the eggs to the buyer in order to get money in.

But what about the one when you’ve done all the work that needs to be done, and then people just come and say I’d like to have it and they just pay?

Like you write a handbook on what it takes to run a farm, a poultry farm, right from the day old bird to the date the birds have to be sent out for sale.

What if you could do that, and you had it as a handbook?

I’ve been selling my Feed Formulation handbook since 2002. I wrote it in 2002, it’s just 65 pages thick, but I sell it as a PDF for N8,000 (Eight Thousand Naira).

I recently (3 weeks ago) had somebody, a Filipino guy, who is based in Dubai working in a company, but he has a pig farm back in the Philippines.

And he sent me a message through my website, after finding me through Google. Then I called him and we spoke. He wanted to buy my feed formulation software. I now asked him if he knew anything about feed formulation and he said not really much.

Then I said : “you have to understand the practical side of Feed Formulation and Compounding, first of all, before you use the software, because if you don;t you won’t have a basis for making proper use of the software to formulate rations for your animals.”

So he said “What do I do?”

I said “Well, you need to buy my Feed Formulation handbook first of all.”

And he went to my online store and bought it for $82 USD (Eighty Two US Dollars).

Think about that. I wrote that book in 2002, and I got somebody to buy it for $82. I can tell you I have other books like that.

Now, as a farm CEO, you are an authority at what you do. The thing is you now have to know how to take your knowledge and expertise, and convert it to money.

You have to be able to monetize what you know. If you can do that, it means people coming to buy your farm products may just take a look and say “Can I buy your book? Can I have that your DVD audio training CD?”

You can convert your knowledge into all forms like I do. I sell all kinds of things. Most of them are just stuff I create from my head, because I know my subject.

Farm CEOs can do the same thing.

We are moving towards an economy in which Agriculture is taking centre stage again. You guys who are farm CEOs are going to be the like the pivot for the progress and development of Nigeria and the rest of Africa.

If you can begin to leverage the Internet properly the way I do, believe me, you will get to a point where you will actually be making much more money selling your knowledge via the channel of passive income generation, that you would even from the farm you’re running.

(This is) because you will get to a point where you will even be invited and get PAID to SPEAK to audiences of people who are prospective retirees. They want to hear from you because they want to do farm business.

Farm business is going to be one of the most lucrative areas to go into, in the near future in this country and across this continent.

So, if you can begin to use the Internet the way I recommend, by using what I call a Web Marketing System, you’re going to be set for life – and then you’re going to be able to help other people do the same.

That’s what I’m trying to do here. You will become a point of contact to help other people to develop the ability to stand on their own two feet as against looking for salaried employment.

So people coming out from school will actually be able to come to your farm, and you can even offer residence based programs. People will take up rooms on your farm, and they would actually be on apprenticeship with you. And they would pay, up front, 100% in advance.

I know what I’m saying. I already do a lot of that – and I’m going to have a Farm Research and Extension Advisory Services centre to do more from.

But I want to help farm CEOs do the same thing because I cannot do it alone.

Now, I’m speaking like this because I realize that a lot of farm CEOs when I make this offer to them, they don;t get it.

Read through the thread to see how a concerned parent searching for competent expert help, is having to deal with unreliable advice from people with no training as well as an overzealous professional!

Imagine if a competent speech therapist had a blog with articles to inform and educate such person on what to do, where to go etc
