Beat Competitors by Doing Things Differently!

"It should be encouraging to know that practically all great fortunes began in the form of compensation for personal services, or from sale of ideas. What else, except ideas and personal services, would one not possessed of property have to give in return for riches?" – Napoleon Hill in "Think & Grow Rich"

Business marketing is more competitive today than ever before! Except you are a monopoly or you enjoy exclusive distribution/sales rights, you WILL have to compete DAILY with others who do what you do for every NAIRA the customer wishes to spend.

A question I believe every business owner should ask him/herself is:

Would it be reasonable to expect customers to choose to buy from you, when NOTHING significantly differentiates you – in a positive sense that is – from competitors who offer similar products and services? I doubt any CEO will say "YES"!

Let me use an analogy to drive this home. Think, for instance, about why YOU as a person typically choose to buy groceries from a particular store, and not another one. Even when the price and quality are the same, the fact that you get more courteous and personalized service from the former, could make you prefer to keep going back there. AND you would even refer others to the same place!

Which is exactly the point I am making. Most buyers if given a good reason will feel drawn to buy from you instead of another seller/provider.

As a business owner, becoming the preferred choice of potential customers will naturally appeal to you. But you are NOT likely to achieve that desirable goal if you keep doing the same thing your competitors (and/or others in your industry) are doing – especially in terms of marketing and advertising.

Discounts, promos and other incentive programs are not bad, but it is only when creatively combined with unique offers that potential customers find useful, (and which competitors find hard to duplicate), that you GAIN a competitive advantage – leading to increased sales leads!

The unique offer I refer to will be one that gives buyers in the market place a COMPELLING reason to buy from you, even when your price is higher than that of other sellers!

Without the above, most of your marketing/advertising will amount to calculated gambling with limited chance of yielding sustainable results. 

How to Make Yourself Preferred by Customers

One proven way to build the needed credibility that will make buyers prefer you is to embark on diligent provision of accurate and HELPFUL information that:

a. Empowers potential buyers to make better informed buying decisions.

b. Simultaneously demonstrates you have the expertise to facilitate that process, should they choose to buy from you.

It’s so obvious, that I often wonder why many business owners out here still do not see it!

Once people come to ASSOCIATE your name and/or that of your company with such helpful information and other resources you provide, they are more likely to think of you when eventually they have a need related to your products/services offer. 

TRUST is the basis on which most successful business transactions take place. The strategy described above enables you get that trust, and keep it for as long as possible.

To get started using this strategy, simply decide on the channel(s) you will use to reach out to potential buyers, with your HELPFUL information. Communication media like print newspapers, TV and radio readily come to mind and are often preferred by most people. 

The truth is however that compared to a "web marketing system", those traditional channels are not just expensive, but they also have much shorter shelf-lives. 

Web Marketing system includes Articles Marketing, Newsletter marketing, Branded Face book Page Marketing, Branded Information Products Marketing, Search engine optimization and others. 

The above combine to help you achieve your goal of getting name/brand credibility. 

The best part is you do NOT have to part with money to make use of them. All you need is an Internet Connection!

So, I urge you to try them before spending your hard earned money on more expensive alternatives.(Googling each of the aforementioned phrases could yield some ideas – but I also offer some of my own further down.)

Note that if you set up your web marketing system FIRST, any other communication channels (TV etc) you choose to use, will benefit from that. This is because your listeners, readers or viewers can be referred to your online system, increasing your chances of having those of them who go there, become customers!

STOP Procrastinating And START Achieving The Goals You Dream About!

Every January, many people announce new year resolutions, but by December achieve little or nothing. I’ve had some intriguing characters PAY me to teach them web design, or Excel-VB, ONLY to leave wondering why I’m chasing them to attend agreed sessions: Funny world indeed! This article explains why you must make procrastination your enemy, and how to defeat it.

Why People Procrastinate (The Problem Usually Starts From Teaching Methods Used In Schools)

Back in school, many of us learned sciences. We drew pictures of the butterfly’s life cycle as it occurs during metamorphosis. But how many actually got to see the entire cycle take place IN REAL LIFE?

I’m not sure about you, but I never got to see a real-life butterfly’s metamorphosis(i.e. from the eggs to the larva – or caterpillar – to the pupa, and then into the adult butterfly) take place, till I left school!

And when I did learn it, it was by accident. Briefly, I took a caterpillar into my bedroom one day, and placed it on a leafy branch(broken off the adult orange tree from which I picked the caterpillar), which was set in a bottle of water.

Over time, the caterpillar ate the leaves, and I replaced the branch until one day it disappeared!

Upon noticing this, I searched all over the table on which the bottle was placed thinking it had fallen off. Until I discovered, under the table top, in a corner joining the table top to the frame, the butterfly pupa covered in its cotton like cocoon!

I promptly put a mosquito net around the table, so that when the adult butterfly hatched/emerged from the pupa, it did not fly off before I was able to see it.

My apologies to the reader if you did not do much biology or Integrated Science in school, where the reproductive cycles of some lower animals might have been covered.

The point I made in the first paragraph is that sometimes, in our conventional schools, learners are forced to memorize photos, diagrams and sketches of the animals or organisms they are taught about in class – without being shown real life examples.

Experience-Based Learning Makes Cramming Unnecessary

Is it not funny that this learning should have happened for me the other way round, considering that parents send their kids to school to acquire knowledge that they can then come to apply in the real world?

I honestly believe that is why Robert Kiyosaki’s ideas for educational reform are so worthy of consideration by any serious parents or educational practitioners.

Question is how many of us will take action to use those ideas to make a difference in the lives of the kids we raise, teach or coach?

The children in many conventional schools are seldom taken outdoors into the real word (nor are they encouraged or challenged to go out of their way after class) to see the real thing.

Instead they are made to read about the activity, and learn to say it as they read it, instead of describing it as they felt while they DOING it. Now, the irony of this poor teaching method is that when one DOES make effort to get a “real” life experience, recalling all the important aspects of that particular process becomes considerably easier. Thus the need for “cramming” is more or less removed.

I sometimes ask people this question: “If you were told to describe the process of making a cup of coffee, would you need to look up the steps from a book to do it?”

The answer I always get every time is “No”. The reason: “You’ve done it many times before”.

And there lies my point. Once we get into the habit of gaining real-life experiences relevant to any new area of knowledge we wish to explore, we will find that our resultant understanding would be comprehensive – and we would no longer need to do so much “cramming”!

Those Who Procrastinate Become Professional Students

Back to goals achievement. Some people attend seminars or workshops, and read books on starting up their businesses but never really start anything worthwhile. Such people in effect become professional students.

They keep attending seminars, reading books, “start” to make the plans, then stop. They never really begin.

Then there are those who do start, but learn from a book/seminar that they need to make some changes in order for their business to move to the next level. However, instead of doing it, they keep procrastinating – and end up never achieving their full potential.

Examples of people who are caught in this kind of “trap’ surround us.

It is the same thing for people in paid employment who desire career advancement, but fail to take the needed actions to improve themselves. Ditto for the one who wants to lose weight but cannot find the will power to deny THAT urge to eat between meals or “miss” exercising regularly etc.

For those able to take action towards achieving the desired end, they ultimately “grow up” to reach higher levels. And go on to achieve authentic success. That’s why some entrepreneurs always seem to be growing in their ability to take their businesses to a higher level, while some others always appear stagnant.

There is a great deal of difference between having knowledge and applying it. The teacher asked. “What is Agriculture?” The pupil replied, “Agriculture is just like farming, but farming is doing it.” – W.F. Weiherman

You Must Continue Learning, IF You Want To Keep MOVING FORWARD!

In a separate article, I wrote about people who record a measure of achievement, and promptly assume they have arrived at the pinnacle of success in their chosen area of endeavour.

Not only is this a faulty notion to have, but it is also potentially damaging, because it leads directly to mediocrity – a state of mind whereby ability and performance that can STILL be significantly improved upon, is continually celebrated as if nothing else is left to be done.

Any one who wishes to achieve goals that are worth celebrating, and that others will acknowledge as worthwhile, needs to rid him/herself of mediocre thinking. The mediocre is the one who does a little, and thinks there is nothing left to be done.

Those who are serious students of success know that success has been correctly described as a journey – NOT a destination.

Also, a person who desires success needs to perpetually HUNGER for knowledge that will better equip him/her to achieve that success.

In other words, s/he cannot be averse to LEARNING new things.

Once at a public gathering, Einstein found himself sitting next to a teenager who failed to recognize the world-renowned theorist at his side. Delightedly Einstein engaged the boy in conversation, and after a while, the boy naively asked: “What do you do for a living?” With typical modesty, Einstein replied, “I study physics.” “What, at your age!” the boy responded incredulously, “I finished that two years ago!” – Edward Hoffman, Editor, The Book of Fathers’ Wisdom Birch Lane Press

Some people – like the boy in the above quote – learn a little bit about something, and immediately assume there’s nothing left to learn. In our society, we have people who finish from university and conclude that they’ve done all the studying they need to do.

One amusing thing they do to show this is to throw away their university notes!

I have never regretted keeping my university notes for instance, because most of the stuff I wrote in the management research paper (Statistical Process Control and Target Setting) that got me to the National Finals of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s Young Managers’ Competition in 1997, (5 full years after I left the university) came from studying some of the concepts in those books.

Summary: If you want to achieve the goals you set for yourself at work or in life, procrastination must become your number ONE enemy.

You need to decide to stick with the target dates you set for achievement of each objective.

Use a checklist if necessary (e.g like my Planned Activity Tracking Sheet), and tick off each item as you achieve it. You will get a good feeling just from seeing a growing number of ticks on it! That feeling, over time, will encourage you to do more.

And before you know it, you will have a string of successes behind you, that can be a source of inspiration to others around you, who procrastinate, to break the habit once and for all :-)

“The stories you are about to read describe events that occurred during the turbulent early years of my life. I originally conceived this “story book” idea as a gift to my kids, to mark my 44th birthday anniversary.

The insights and tips I offer in the pages that follow, can guide you to make better preparations to coach your kids to succeed in adulthood.

In particular, the ideas I share can help you intelligently handle yourself and your child whenever s/he does wrong – no matter how bad. And in the long run, you are likely to be able to help him/her recover/bounce back, and move on to even greater heights.

It is my hope, that parents who read (and/or listen to audio narrations of) my stories, will do so with their kids, or challenge their kids to do it in their own time.

Doing so is likely to help you connect and bond better with one another. Reading/hearing me narrate how I goofed up – time and time again – as a child, and how, with guidance from my parents and responsible adults in society I was able to reform myself, can give you useful parenting insights.

And your kids will learn from my mistakes.

In other words, you will be better equipped to guide your child to navigate the potentially confusing jungle of his/her formative years’ experiences, to become a competent adult…

…I would NEVER want to see my daughter go topless anywhere, talk less on the cover of a magazine. I don’t care if a goddess or “Diva” does it, and gets rich in the process.

I know the Creator would never approve of it.

However, I also know I cannot force my child to LIVE right. Instead, I have to guide her develop similar morals, values, and the strength of character to stick with them, no matter what others say.

Let those who believe in doing what’s popular say you’re being old fashioned. It won’t matter, as long as you play your God-given role CORRECTLY in the life of the wonderful child the Creator gifted you!

I urge you to read this book to the end, and even give copies as gifts to your children and/or grandchildren, if you have them.

But don’t stop there. Like I’ve said towards the end, you will need to take diligent and consistent action to coach those kids you give, to make intelligent use of what they learn from reading the book, to keep going in the right direction.

In this unusual book, Tayo Solagbade narrates 5 true stories about a dizzying variety of (sometimes shocking) escapades he engaged in – while schooling – that repeatedly landed him in trouble, causing his parents avoidable heart breaks.

In the first story, Tayo suffers the embarrassment of having a female classmate falsely accuse him – to their class teacher – of peeping at her in the girls’ room! He would however shake off the potentially traumatizing experience, to earn a double promotion into secondary school one year ahead of his class, in 1980.

At the age of 10, in his first year in secondary school, Kukuru Danger™ (Tayo’s alter ego) joins a notorious group of students, in a bid to escape frequent bullying from bigger and older classmates.

Over the course of the year, they routinely sneak out of school to eat meals at Mai Shai shops without paying, steal coins from traders’ slot machines, and catch crabs at the Lagoon front!

At a point, Kukuru™ begins stealing money from home, to play the slots. But he soon gets caught.

By the school year’s end his mother is shocked to read the principal’s comments at the bottom of his report card, saying “To repeat for cheating”.

She eventually learns that Kukuru™ had let his friends copy his script during the exams. So, despite passing all subjects, the disciplinary panel decided he should repeat the year as well.

His disappointed parents decide he should start over in a new school. In 1981, he resumes first year in C & S College, Ilorin, and spends 4 years keeping his promise to his parents, to stay out of trouble.

Then he gets appointed Health Prefect in his final year. And suddenly, he goes haywire again.

This time, he and some friends begin missing classes to hunt bush rats, and at a point graduate to poaching the vice principal’s backyard poultry farm chickens!

Tayo’s brother tries to warn him to stop, but gets told off. Until one day, they are caught and sent on suspension. But they do not go home, and instead, they roam the streets, eating and sleeping in a stranger’s home, and later sneaking back to sleep in the hostels.

His guardian eventually visits the school, and Tayo is forced to go home, where his parents later meet him, and his father reads him the riot act.

Before the book ends, you are told how Tayo vows to redeem himself by passing the final exams.

But after the exams, he and a friend have a near death experience, when a violent “thug-like” student that Tayo got sent on indefinite suspension, came with armed gang members to confront him at the train station, on his last night in Ilorin.

The fifth and final story tells of how one year later, Tayo learnt the hard way, that fighting is NEVER the answer to conflicts.

While attending A-Levels in Government College Kaduna, he got beaten black and blue by a Form 5 student, who was technically junior to him.

However, by the end of the session, Tayo succeeds in earning the respect of that student and others, by accidentally employing a timeless strategy used by succesful people worldwide, for centuries!

In narrating each story, Tayo offers potentially useful insights for both parents and their kids based on his successful self-reformation. This book is ultimately about dealing with peer pressure. So it is sprinkled with quotes on peer pressure – for people of all ages – to help add perspective.

Use Joint Venture Marketing Partnerships to Achieve Greater Marketing Success

The use of Joint Venture Marketing Partnerships to boost sales is a time tested strategy. Sadly, not many people understand how it works, and/or how to use it successfully. This article offers explanations and insights interested persons can use.

How It Works: The example of a well known publisher of a business magazine

This gentleman is well known for what he does, and I’ve studied his model quite closely.

Let’s call him Mr. S.

He periodically brings a variety of experts under one roof, to share their know-how with paying attendees (mostly readers of his magazine) in a week long series of workshops and seminars.

Basically, what happens is that individuals or groups who have specific areas of business expertise approach Mr. S to explain what they offer, and how it can help the magazine readers.

He evaluates their “knowledge products” (training or otherwise) for its potential usefulness to his readers.

Note the italicized reference to “his” readers in the preceding sentence.

Majority of those who will attend many of the seminars during the week will often be readers of his magazine.

This is because all the seminar offerings will be advertised in Mr. S’ business magazine some weeks before the event is due to hold.

So, for prospective resource persons/trainers he accepts to partner with, the difficult business of advertising to reach their target audience is made quite easy.

The business magazine’s readers are most likely to be people who own their own businesses or plan to start theirs.

As a result prospective seminar facilitators are sure that the right people will be reading the adverts they’ve placed. And they are likely to be interested in attending the events.

Mr. S in effect “endorses” the resource persons to his list of trusting readers who “believe” that anything they read in the magazine must be useful to them.

In exchange for his willingness to share advertising access to his readers, (and also organizing the week long event, taking administrative stress off their necks, the prospective facilitators/resource persons give a percentage of their earnings from the seminars to Mr. S.

According to Marc Goldman, who calls this technique “The Most Powerful Marketing Method Ever Invented”, the norm in terms of percentage of the profits one could expect for doing something similar to what Sunny does is 50%.

But he adds that the person giving others access to his network of buyers has the right to demand whatever percentage of the sale s/he wants.

The reason for that is that the “seller” being endorsed by you, to your buyer list or network is going to gain new customers. And s/he will go on to make MORE money from them in future that you will NOT get a piece of!

That is why if YOU are the one providing the referral opportunity in a Joint Venture Marketing Partnership arrangement, you should aim to capitalize on the profits made at the very first run.

Just in case you’re already challenging the above, let me quickly help make the point even clearer.

Let’s imagine you are one of those experts intending to offer a seminar to Mr. S’ readers.

The truth is that without Mr. S allowing you to advertise to his readers through his magazine, it would be quite difficult for you to find so many people potentially interested in buying your products/services (or attending your training) all in one place!

And even if you did find a medium like Mr. S’ magazine, would the readers readily attend your seminar/hand over their hard earned money to someone they do not know (i.e. YOU) – and have no reason to trust?

Do you see why Mr. S’ endorsement is worth a hefty sum of money now?

You see, Mr. S offers you the “unfair advantage” of instant credibility before the readers of your advertisement in his magazine.

That’s one of the benefits you’ll pay for, by giving up as much as 50% of what you make through him.

Final Words: If you can find someone to work with in a Joint-Venture arrangement, you are likely to boost your marketing efforts tremendously.

It would make you quickly gain good ground and acceptability in the market place with your product and/or service.

Also, and depending on the kind of business you go into, you will find that at a point, you will be able to offer another person access to your own customer list, and in the process make good extra income for yourself, almost without lifting a finger – like Mr. S does!

At the age of 10, in his first year in secondary school, Kukuru Danger™ (Tayo’s alter ego) joins a notorious group of students, in a bid to escape frequent bullying from bigger and older classmates.

Over the course of the year, they routinely sneak out of school to eat meals at Mai Shai shops without paying, steal coins from trader’s slot machines, and catch crabs at the Lagoon front!

At a point, Kukuru™ begins stealing money from home, to play the slots. But he soon gets caught.

By the school year’s end his mother is shocked to read the principal’s comments at the bottom of his report card, saying “To repeat for cheating”.

Entrepreneurs Need Opportunities To Serve For A Profitable Fee – NOT Handouts Or Pity!

What would be your reaction if an individual just starting up, or in the difficult early stages of running, his/her business (e.g a book writing and publishing support service) approached you, asking you to consider purchasing part-ownership in it? Would you look objectively at his/her ability, the market potential of his (hopefully) unique offering and other relevant details, in taking a decision?

In other words – if it was there – would you be willing to see an opportunity for a potentially rewarding/mutually beneficial relationship?

Or are you likely to conclude s/he is just someone you can feel sorry for, and help out with say, some money? This article can help prospective investors or clients/customers – especially those in developing societies.

How?

By making them understand why a TRUE entrepreneur will PREFER to request a fair and impartial opportunity to deliver a solution to you, for a fee, you’re WILLING to pay.

It also offers experience based ideas for entrepreneurs who may be plagued with self-doubt arising from poor responses from prospective clients/customers and investors.

True entrepreneurs prefer to EARN what they make through honest and intelligent effort, and typically abhor offers of “handouts” or favours.

Many people in developed societies have enough around them to help them understand that entrepreneuring can be prestigious, and investing in, or patronising an entrepreneur can be quite rewarding.

The fact is that the clients/customers or investors who have to consider what a first-time startup entrepreneur has to offer them, may NOT have the benefit of access to his/her business track record.

That’s because it would be his/her FIRST time. And so there may be no family pedigree or “sensible” ideas to help them make up their minds about the potential benefits of buying from him.

They will therefore have to take something of a “leap of faith” in starting a relationship with him/her.

They would have to carefully evaluate all that s/he is offering them as investors or prospective clients/customers. Then they would use that to decide whether or not the total picture they can see, and the potential rewards promised can justify the monetary or other commitment s/he asks for.

They would, in essence, have to demonstrate a belief in his/her ability to deliver what s/he promises.

The above is actually why this article was NOT written primarily for persons who live/work in DEVELOPED societies.

In advanced societies people have been doing it for decades. Many successful enterprises exist out there today, because investors and customers put their faith – and hard earned money – in an individual who had little or nothing more than an idea, when starting up.

This article has instead been written mainly for the benefit of persons in DEVELOPING societies.

Startup entrepreneurs who also have little or nothing more than an “idea” may approach them to consider investing in or purchasing a product or service.

Specifically, I draw from over four years of experience as an entrepreneur in a developing country – Nigeria. There, in my opinion, there is a generally poor understanding of what the relationship between entrepreneurs and their prospective clients/customers or investors ought to be. Many African nations also share similar traits, incidentally.

The Situation/Problem

1. Quite often the entrepreneur is NOT seen as a provider of valuable – possibly badly – needed solutions to the clients’ NEEDS.

Instead s/he tends to be seen as the unfortunate individual who made the mistake of thinking s/he could earn a decent living outside the security of paid employment…or without access to the right connections.

Those s/he approaches via marketing consequently adopt a position of superiority over him/her – feeling s/he needs them more than they need him/her!

2. As a result of 1. above, many supposed entrepreneurs – out of desperation – agree to sometimes outrageous proposals

This often happens when they deal with greedy, and corrupt individuals in prospective client companies. In some cases, they get the job that way, but earn little in terms of profit, since they share what is paid them with those who influence/approve it.

In no time at all they are back begging for another opportunity.

That certainly conflicts with the Be Your Own Boss concept that starting one’s own business is about doesn’t it?

Who Loses Out/Suffers In The Long Run?

The entrepreneur of course – IF s/he gives in. S/he will lose her dignity and status before clients.

If s/he gets used to it(as has happened to many) s/he’ll probably decide to secure more “easy” jobs and become lazy from getting mostly un-earned income.

Some people have accused me of exaggerating the problem. Others say I want too much change in too short a time.

The truth however is that I see very little effort being made by very few people to do anything about it. Yet, evidence of its presence and ill-effects daily torment hardworking, competent and honest people.

I CANNOT keep quiet in the face of all that. If it is all I can do, I will create awareness about it, and propose workable solutions for the sake of others – including my own children.

Note: This problem occurs in some developed societies. But that – going by the obvious prestige associated with entrepreneuring in many of them – if often the exception, NOT the norm, as tends to be the case out here.

Of course, not everyone here is guilty of doing the naughty things mentioned above either. But majority are…and a large number of those who are not, are often afraid to say or do anything about it.

Don’t Compromise Your Values Or Be Subservient To ANYONE!

To the entrepreneur, I will make this challenge.

Accepting shabby treatment from clients will not make you gain stature before them.

If anything, you will lower your credibility and worth in their eyes, and those of others who observe your subservience. If you find any client trying to treat you shabbily, you may want to seriously consider walking away from that relationship, as it could end up doing you more harm than good.

Think about it this way: What are the chances of a guy who keeps putting you down, delaying your payments and trying to get you to do more for less – or nothing! – giving you any word-of-mouth referrals/testimonials that result in PROFITABLE jobs?

Read Donna Gunter’s article titled “7 Signs That It’s Time to Fire a Client” () to learn more about why you may need to “fire” a naughty client(s).

Also, I strongly believe it is better to spend your time doing things that IMPROVE your ability to win profitable clients, than to allow abusive clients repeatedly underpay and exploit you!

But then, not everyone has the courage to risk prolonged humiliation that may(initially) come with taking this kind of stance – and the following quote predicts their fate:

“Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them.” – Frederick Douglass

There is a solution – BUT only for those who are willing to pay the price. .

The solution I propose, is for an entrepeneur confronted with the problem(s) described in this article to:

(a). develop additional income earning competencies

(b). explore opportunities for earning income through channels that do NOT allow third parties influence the decision making process. At least not without s/he being given a fair and impartial opportunity to bid.

S/he can do this while continuing to explore the available openings for a fair and impartial opportunity to bid for business.

Countries like India have shown that it can be done e.g. self-employed persons providing digital services(freelance writing, software development, help desks etc) via the Internet.

My achievements as an online provider of high profile products and services, for years now, also confirm persons in Africa, CAN do it as well!

Of course, not everyone will find this a suitable alternative. Though I dare say that now, and in the future, virtually anyone who is serious about earning income with less effort will need to give this alternative MORE serious consideration!

For now, I guess the question will have to be whether those who need this alternative, will be prepared to make the requird long term commitment, to bring their dreams to reality.

Incidentally, success in doing a. or b. above – apart from making him/her more versatile – would further boost the entrepreneur’s sales leads generation!

Hopefully, from reading this article, if you ever need to buy from – or invest in – and an entrepreneur, you won’t make the mistakes highlighted above.

Except s/he is NOT an authentic, vision-driven entrepreneur, it is highly unlikely s/he will want you to feel pity – or give him/her some handouts.

Especially when you are willing to buy (invest in) the product/service(or returns) s/he claims to be capable of delivering!

If you have read this as an entrepreneur(or one aspiring), I will ask you this question:

How will you deal with the possible lack of interest or patronage from your target audience?

Will you compromise and settle for a one-sided relationship in which people feel they are just doing you a favour by doing business with you?

Or will you work hard to adopt the alternative solution along the lines of that provided above so as to command profitable earnings, credibility and recognition in your line of business?

In my case, when I wrote this article over 8 years ago, I had already made my decision. And you’re reading this artcile, on this blog, today, because it worked for me. Today, I enjoy the consideration and respect of clienrts from diffeent countries, who find me on their own and request my products/services.

As a rule I DO NOT chase clients. Instead I take diligent daily actions – mostly online (and some offline) – that make them come to me.

And they keep coming to me. By phone, email, Skype, Facebook, Youtube, Google+ and even Twitter!

99% of the time they are total strangers. They do not know me, and I do not know them. And yet by the time we’re done conversing, 60%of the time, they go on to send me funds via various agreed channels.

This past week, it has happened three times. In fact I have to travel to Nigeria to meet one of such CEOs soon.

If you want to achieve similar results to mine, you’ll need to learn to do what I do. But first you MUST decide that you are ready to adopt a new approach that will help you command the respect of prospects and clients.

“Bleaching” Your Skin Insults Your Creator, and Makes You Lose Dignity (Message from Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Lupita Nyong’o to Black/African Parents & their Children)

One of Fela’s most popular songs when I was a child was :”Yellow Fever” – released when I was 6 years old, in 1976. I LOVED that song. Still do too(see Youtube video below)! He was basically challenging skin-bleaching black men and women, who wanted to become “white” by force, out of an inferiority complex, to change their ways.

Apart from his fierce defence of human rights, as being each person’s “personal property’ and therefore NOT to be “given” to us by others, Fela also launched “lyrical” attacks on corrupt governments/individuals.

And of course he constantly challenged the individual African to treat him/herself with respect.

I named my first child “OLUFELA” in 1999, in honour of Fela! Just like his daughter said in this pictured poster, he was – and remains – a major influence on my thinking about how to be a PROUD AFRICAN.

Sadly, many hypocritical parents/adults focused on his weed smoking as a convenient excuse to ignore his wise – and prophetic – counsel.

Most of Fela’s songs, always carried clear and powerful messages to either the common people, or the government of the day, or “colonial” powers.

As an adult African, and parent, today, one of the things that bothers me the most is the apparent self-hate that Africans/black skinned people seem to have for their skin colour…and hair.

Today, I travel around quite a bit, and I see that the problem is worse. Women especially, African WOMEN in particular, continue with this sickening habit.

I look around me and it appears every time I see 5 normal skinned black persons, at least ONE rainbow coloured skinned woman passes by as well!

In Lagos-Nigeria and Cotonou-Benin Republic, where I currently do most of my traveling, this skin “bleaching” trend is like some kind of competition!

And all sorts of crazy skin creams are arriving the markets, to feed this madness!

The sad thing is that they NEVER end up better off…as Fela points out in his lyrics.

He starts by explaining that there are 2 kinds of Yellow “Fever” – the Original one (i.e. the actual sickness) and the artificial (skin bleaching from black to lighter tone in an effort to look white)

Add to that the thirst by the same women to wear imported long straight hair, that the God they claim to BELIEVE in, never thought it wise to give them at birth, and you discover a pandemic of unimaginable proportions!

This need to avoid a loss of identity, as an African, is one of the reasons I have vowed to coach my own kids to be comfortable with who they are, and what they look like.

That is, to have what sane human beings know as SELF-ESTEEM.

It is why I’m publishing my new book titled “Kukuru Danger™ about my own childhood search for self-discovery and purpose.

I too suffered a need to belong, and to be accepted, right from my early years and even in my later adult years. But by listening to Fela’s lyrics, and also reading books about self-development, I learnt to believe in myself, and never feel inferior to any other human being.

Today, that mental attitude serves me well in my dealings with people – regardless of who they are, how important they are (or think they are) or where they come from – even if from MARS!

More Africans need to realize that the world appreciates them for being the way they are, MORE than it will ever appreciate them for trying to be what they are inherently NOT.

And if we ever needed proof of the above stated fact, well Lupita Nyong’o’s example perfectly fits the bill. And luckily for us, she herself shared a familiar story that proves she knows what others with her skin complexion pass through.

But she arrived on the world stage and discovered it was willing to accept her, if she accepted herself.

Today, she is celebrated by virtually everyone who is anyone in her industry…yet her complexion remains the same, and so does the hair on her head!

How I wish African women and their men (some tell me their women look “more beautiful” after bleaching!) will wake and rediscover the pride and essence of being who they are.

Some try to make it sound less nasty by calling it skin toning, and they refer to those with money (e.g female black celebrities) who “successfully changed” skin colours as justification for doing it too.

How lame! Goes right back to the lack of identity and self-esteem I started this article with.

Look, white skinned people get sun tanned skins by spending time in the sun, or using sun tan lotions. But the effects are never permanent. If they stop, their skin changes back to it’s natural white. But a black skinned person cannot get a white “tan”, you see. That’s why when a black skinned person goes “yellow” or “white”, s/he never changes back. Now, you can say it’s “toning”, if you like, but THAT, is what I call SKIN BLEACHING (to borrow Fela’s very apt terminology).” – Tayo K. Solagbade

By the way, last time I checked Oprah Winfrey remains globally acknowldged and respected, and I have NOT see her undergo any noticeable skin colour changes.

Should Oprah not be the role model we should all try to emulate in that (and other) respects???

The truth is that the world will be a much better place for us to live in, when we start respecting ourselves.

Only then will others really take us seriously and respect us as well. But if we keep acting as if we’re inferior (and we have NEVER been), then those who relate with us and who see that, will naturally treat us that way.

The choice is yours. What will you do? And what will you TEACH your child to do???

I know what I already do, and I have begun teaching my kids to do it as well. In my family/clan will always be black and proud sons and daughters of Africa!

Lupita ended her wonderful acceptance speech on black beauty with the following words…

“And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.”

I now offer those same words, as a parting message, to my fellow black skinned African women and men who may be tempted to “bleach” their God-given complexions lighter, to feel better about themselves.

Don’t do it. You insult yourself, and your creator if you do. And it will never be worth it!

No. 152: Do You Need Blogging To Achieve More Speaking Success?

I say YES, because to become an expert-who-gets-paid-to-speak, you NEED to establish yourself as a thought leader – indeed an authority – in the minds of your target audience. Blogging is a powerful (and zero cost) strategy that can be used to achieve that outcome for the long term.

I say this as an expert-who-gets-paid-to-speak, who has now been blogging Mondays to Saturdays (sometimes Sundays) for over a year and a half.

The results I’ve gotten in that relatively short period (like this recent one), prove that blogging, properly done, deliver significant, yet timeless self-promotion benefits!

Before I began blogging, I used to publish a monthly web based html newsletter (called the Self-Development Digest™) which I emailed to subscribers.

I did that – monthly – from 2006 right into early 2012.

Then in June 2012, I came across Patrick Meninga’s very educative 1 hour interview with Yaro Starak.

In it he shared the secret of how he started a blog, and through diligent and intelligent hard work, grew it to earn over $2,000 US dollars monthly via Google adsense..

And he also shared details of how he eventually sold the blog for an amazing $200,000 US dollars – becoming an Internet celebrity in the process.

After listening to Patrick’s MP3 interview, I distilled useful lessons I learnt from it, into an article on my blog – for others to learn from.

I did so because I realized blogging provided a much more effective means of promoting one’s work to a target audience. And could see it took much less effort, than I was expending in manually updating my HTML newsletter and website.

WordPress – being the powerful Content Management system that it is – makes the process of writing and publishing one’s ideas so much easier.

And it also lends itself much more readily to being indexed by search engine, by the very nature of its design.

As long as one publishes content that will be considered interesting or potentially useful by one’s desired audience, using WordPress can dramatically boost one’s visibility online in multiple ways e.g. via search engines, as well as on Social Media platforms.

Now, I had already experienced the benefits of writing useful content even with the manual HTML approach I was using (on my 9 year old former primary domain: spontaneousdevelopment.com)

I had also used article marketing via www.ezinearticles.com to boost the promotional reach of my writing.

Over the years, I’d seen my write ups get widely republished by other website publishers who picked it up via Ezinearticles.com. And the results had come in form of pre-qualified traffic to my website – some of which resulted in sales of my products.

Apart from the growing website traffic, I’d also over the years seen my books get purchased from my online store. Sales reports popping into my email in box, each week.

Then there were the websites that published reports, term papers and other resources, in which they quoted me on topics like Emotional Intelligence, based on articles I’d written.

In addition, I had the publisher of a university journal, in India, write me for permission to include my article titled “Are Your Employees Happy & Satisfied With Their Jobs? (A Ten Item Quiz That Can Help You Find Out). That journal has since been published and put on sale – my article was included, with my permission.

In essence I’m saying that I had seen how my relentless commitment to writing useful content enabled me build name recognition, credibility and authority status.

It therefore occurred to me that using blogging the way Patrick Meninga recommended it be done, would simply enable me take the results I was getting to a MUCH higher level.

Like I said at the start of this piece, as an expert in your chosen field, you are a potential thought leader.

But note the word I used there: POTENTIAL.

As long as you are competent and qualified, it means you have, in you the capacity, and capability, to become a thought leader in your field.

However, you must MANIFEST that potential. That is, you must put it to work for you.

The most effective way to do that will be to share your ideas, experiences, insights etc.

Now, a variety of ways exist to share what you know, in order to get accepted as an authority.

Speaking is a very obvious one of them…

However, you first have to get people to think highly enough of you to invite you to speak!

You have to SHOW them you know enough of something they desire to learn about.

To do that, you need to offer them “samples” of your knowledge and insights. And you have to do this on a regular basis, without relenting. That way, they will believe you have MORE to offer.

What’s more, if you do this right, they will actually assume you will be a better knowledge provider to connect with, compared to any competitors or rivals they are aware you have.

My experiences and observations convince me that offering such “samples” to your target audience is best done by writing creatively.

By CREATIVELY, I mean not just writing randomly, but doing it in a way that is deliberate and constantly evolving

This belief was what I based my entry into blogging upon, back in June 2012 (and today, I’m reaping massive multi-dimensional rewards, even more than I’d imagined possible) .

I knew I needed to do as Patrick had said – share passionately, what I knew. And I was already used to doing that from the article writing I’d been doing for years.

But I was excited to see the organized structure that a blog would help me achieve. For instance, the archives facilitated review of what I’d written, and exploring book ideas from them.

In fact, my new book titled “Kukuru Danger™: Adventures (& Misadventures!) of a School Age Child Trying to Make Sense of the World and his purpose in it!”  which I will publish in my online store this week, was partly written using 2 articles I wrote on this blog last year.

And I’m already compiling material to publish a book on public speaking using a collection of my most read blog posts on the subject in a few weeks. [ See what I mean? And this is apart from the many successes (paid speaking/product sales wise) I’ve shared about in past articles.]

Those were the additional benefits of blogging that I foresaw. And they are what people who fit your target audience profile WILL SEE, when they check you out!

The writing you churn out via your blog (if useful) will gradually win them over, making them consider you ahead of your peers.

By the time decision makers contact you, and you “converse”with them in a manner that shows you’re as good as your written content suggests you are, chances are good they’ll choose to hire you over others.

It’s simple common sense. No meeting planner wants to hire a speaker who will under perform or disappoint.

So they always want to assure themselves you have the depth, and delivery, that is required to impress their members.

Your blog, with updated, and useful content gives them a good avenue to establish that, to a great extent.

I like to think of it as proactive/futuristic marketing, in which you’re writing now, to meet the needs and interests of potential clients, who are yet to “find you”.

By the time they do, you’ll have built a critical mass of useful content that will entice them to contact you!

But get this: If you do your blogging, as part of a Web Marketing System, such that videos, audios, and other “content” are accessible through it/via social media, you’ll achieve multiple benefits.

Final Words: Blogging – done on a consistent basis, to share useful content – boosts an expert’s credibility, and earns him/her authority status.

When that happens, s/he will naturally become an “attractive” option for meeting planners looking to hire an expert-who-speaks.

Note that apart from boosting your chances of getting hired to speak, “visibility” conferred by blogging can also attract new/repeat sales leads to you, for products and services you offer!

And that’s why many leading experts-who-speak, and even renowned mentors of highly paid speakers (like this one), use blogging for self-promotion.
