That is my ultimate purpose for conducting this CSI series. This is a public service, and I hope you will find it useful.

For every guest, I will be asking twelve (12) questions. However, the questions, for the most part will be personalized for each person, based on his/her unique area of expertise, as well as experience, achievements etc.
In other words, the questions will be designed to help us extract useful learnings that can be had from his/her experiences and achievements in life.
Do You Have Unique Experience Based Insights That Can Help Others Excel, Like YOU?
If YES, then I’d like to interview YOU on the CSI platform.
This post is designed to be an open invitation to ANY interested CEOs or experts who may wish to feature on the CEO Spotlight Interview.
From what I’ve said above, and the content of the interviews already available here, the requirements are easy to discern.
You simply need to have useful information and education, based on YOUR personal experiences and achievements, to share.
Most importantly, I am always on the lookout for new, original or innovative ideas, methods, strategies and techniques discovered, developed or adapted by the CEO or expert to achieve perfromance improvement in his/her personal or work life.
I’m featuring this excellent piece by Tim Newman (a British Expatriate) for much the same reasons I had for sending links to it, to 2 business associates I have (one in the UK and the other in the USA). My purpose is to give as many people as possible who are NOT familiar with it, a more accurate picture of what the socioeconomic environment is like in Nigeria.
Every time I’ve wanted to give a non-Nigerian an idea of what made me relocate to Cotonou, and begin to do 80% of my work via the web, instead of dealing directly with Nigerians in Nigeria, I’ve always tended to come across as bad-mouthing my people and country.
Well now, with this truly insightful and well balanced piece by Tim Newman, I no longer need to worry about being misunderstood.
Virtually every Nigerian at home and abroad who has read Mr. Newman’s article, and chosen to post a comment, has expressed full agreement with all he wrote!
Just the night before I read Tim’s article, I briefed my kids in a small meeting we had, about how the pains of petrol scarcity and erratic power supply even in December, are caused by many Nigerians choosing to collude with powerful others in high places.
YET the churches and mosques get filled up on Sundays, Fridays and even weekdays, just like Tim noted in his article.
I then pointed out to the kids that honest businesses are needlessly hit with hard times as a result, stifling business and economic activities – making it difficult, for my local clients for instance to take up offers they agreed to.
This is what has forced me to aim for more earnings in USD because the crash in value of the Naira (caused by more naughty behaviour by politicians and their wealthy friends) is making nonsense of my efforts to offer some of my services to Nigerians e.g. writing/blogging.
That’s why I’m refocusing such offers towards outside prospects who can pay me in USD. That way my time and effort expended will yield more useful returns.
My point: Nigeria is not a pleasant place to stay prolonged periods in. That’s why my resolve to move my family to Cotonou remains firm, no matter what.
I decided to share this because I feel reading Tim Newman’s piece might give you, the reader – wherever you may be, on this planet – an even better idea of what it’s like out to live/work from out here …compared to what you experience at your end.
A few years ago I vowed that I would get Nigerians who were refusing to give me a fair and impartial opportunity to sell my products and services, to send payment to me without setting eyes on me.
Many laughed at me when I said it (in 2011), especially since I claimed I would make it happen using the web.
It took me over 6 months of hard work, round the clock (thanks to constant power supply) to setup my Web Marketing System the way I knew it needed to be, and to begin getting the results I knew were possible.
Today, those who were laughing at me before 2012, are no longer laughing – and that’s despite the fact that I’ve yet to reach the “top” I’m aiming at.
It’s now obvious, to them, that it’s only a matter of time before I get there.
You see, my actions stemmed from a discovery that the mental attitude of Nigerians is completely different from that of people in developed societies.
And that applies even to many Nigerians in diaspora.
It took me thousands of hours over the years, to discover what works in selling solutions of the kind I wanted to offer to Nigerians – and Africans in general.
That discovery convinced me I needed to do LOTS of TESTING. It also guided me to understand that I would need to persist and be deliberate in digging deep to identify the 10% good Nigerians that Tim Newman mentioned in his article for me to work with.
Today, I try to share the insights I’ve gained, with authentic others from outside Nigeria, who I come across when they visit Nigeria – or who reach out to me about marketing “intellectual” products and services (e.g. consultancy, coaching, mentoring, software etc) in the Nigerian market.
I go out of my way to try giving them an accurate impression of what to expect. I do this because my experiences have taught me that most people do NOT believe the situation in Nigeria is as bad as it is. The reported reaction of Tim Newman’s French colleagues to anecdotes about happenings in Nigeria is a case in point.
So, for me, this is not about the money. I want to help those willing to come to Nigeria, from their own parts of the world, to boost their chances of making a lasting impact, as much as possible.
The key to making that happen is helping them get mentally prepared for what the culture shock they will most likely encounter.
That way, they stand a better chance of achieving their desired goals, which is likely to influence a change for the better in the mental attitudes of those Nigerians they work with – making them believe it is possible to fight the “cancer” they see consuming the society.
I’m determined to send a message to the 90% naughty Nigerians that change is here, and that merit, competence and excellence will be the standards cherished by a growing new generation of Nigerians I and willing others, will help develop.
The first step in making that happen, is to share the insights from Tim Newman, a british expatriate who got us all figured out in just 3 years!
Nigeria, and most of Africa remain places that baffle me in terms of how the large majority of locals fail to understand that the way they use the web is NOT the main way those in developed societies, who make it work, use it!
Later today, my Writers Submission Guidelines go LIVE regarding this offer (details here).
For now, a few thoughts about my purpose…
I’m on a personal mission to challenge web users, at least serious minded ones, out here, to begin thinking about its use more in terms of legitimate, creative income earning effort making, and LESS in terms of the silly hyped “become a millonnaire fast” or “make money without working”, often scam based offers most people out here settle for.
My brother in law (Segun Ogunlana, who is connected to me on on Facebook), as well as my sister (Tomi Ajayi) have been involved in getting royalties in USD to me from sales of my books, my ExcelVB software, and agent commissions from my US partner for quite some time now.
That is apart from a large payment I got paid by an international organisation in Holland, to write a 4,000 word case study research paper about adoption of my Ration Formulator software by farm business owners in and out of Africa.
Coming closer home, I get paid by clients in Nigeria, Benin and beyond, to ghost write articles, website copy and books on their behalf.
My STRATEGIC vision is to boost my earnings in USD by serving more international clients with my solutions.
My success so far has helped me weather the countless storms of erratic business climate in my local market in Nigeria especially.
It has also enabled me demontrate to those who supported me when I began, that I have something that works!
I have articles on my blog in which I’ve provided details of all these, and some are visble right now on my Facebook wall!
It is instructive to note that my offer is nothing like any other seen on ANY website in Africa.
Take it from me: www.tayosolagbade.com is the first ever website in Africa, to offer payment of this kind to contributors of good quality Guest Posts/Articles
Most will simply ask you to write for free, if at all.
My other reasons for doing this are stated in my blog post including the soon to be announced new Joint Venture partnership I’m starting with a famous US based Internet Marketing personality, who recently made me an offer of co-ownership of his website.
Let me make it clear that the USD funds I aim to use to pay authors who take up this offer comes from monthly passive income earnings I have been getting for a while, which I’ve now arranged, with the sender, to redirect part of towards this purpose.
Paying $50 USD out of it amounts to using about 30% of it. To me, that is a good investment.
Note that my offer has been emailed to my database of subscribers some being in Asia, America and Europe.
I will also be notifying leading blog and website owners in and out of Africa, with audiences fitting my target audience profile that I’m doing this, so they can spread the word if they wish.
In other words, this is intended to be a process that will yield QUALITY content I can feature to command better attention for my blog, with associated benefits.
Anyone thinking of taking up this offer must understand that I belong to a little known world of hard working experts who write (in my case I also code and sell software etc) for a living.
Keyword there = Hardworking.
Ever written a marketable 1,000 word article?
I mean an authoritative piece that made serious content publishers contact you for permission to republish in a journal to be put on sale, or even to pay you for rights to republish in their newsletter?
Well I have – many times. And writing such a piece is NOT easy, even though most of my clients continually comment that I make it look so. But I always remind them that I’ve been doing this for over a decade, and for many years I kept doing it even though I got no one offering to pay me!
That’s all changed now. Today, I belong to a world of silent success, where hard work, done with creative intellectual effort yields great ROI at low to zero cost.
By the time I accept and pay for the first Guest Post in January 2016, it will be clear to any doubting Thomases that THIS offer is no joke.
By the way, just so you know, paying for guest articles has been a widespread practice for YEARS in America especially.
I have benefitted (and continue to benefit) from that culture.
Now that I earn passive income in USD to support doing so, I intend to grow my brand to the next level by paying those willing to do the hard work to meet my stated requirements to submit useful content on my blog as well.
To illustrate, here’s an article that lists 79 websites that pay writers up to $100 USD.

Sadly, my smartphone camera acted up during that event, such that the video I recorded emerged “corrupted” while most of the photos came out blurred to various extents. I still cannot explain what happened.
However, all is not lost. I salvaged some photos and took time to create digital versions of materials I picked up from stands I visited. You’ll see them as you read the notes I’ve prepared below.
1. Farm CEOs Lack of Sales and Marketing Savvy REMAINS a major problem.
It’s a serious challenge limiting what I estimate to be over 90% of farm business owners and agro allied enterprises.
In less than 3 hours at the exhibition venue, the conversation I had with various stakeholders there proved most still do NOT understand that they have to THINK as entrepreneurs, with smart marketing drive, if they want to succeed with their agro based businesses.
My interaction with a VERY animated group of farm business owners was instructive in this regard. At the stand for a seeds production company, I silently waited to let them finish so I could move closer.
That was when one of them, a lady, said “Look, we’re buying all these stuff now. But what we forget is that after producing, finding buyers who will pay well will be the challenge”
The others nodded in agreement and began recalling previous unsavoury experiences at the hands of exploitative buyers.
I’d engaged a tall young man in the group in discussion by this time, but could not help over hearing what the others were saying.
At a point, as I listened to them, I could no longer help myself, and decided to speak up.
I began by saying I always felt really pained to hear farm business owners who had worked so hard to turn out products, complaining about being held to ransom by prospective buyers.
Then I told them the following true story, to illustrate…
Just a week before, while I was still in Cotonou, I’d called up a Farm CEO who’d taken up a promo to purchase my Poultry Farm Manager, and become a member of my Inner Circle in the process.
One of the benefits of Inner Circle membership is that I make periodic offers to help each member in any way I can. Sometimes I research, compile and send information across. At other times I go further to make hefty discount promo offers of products or services I discover a member(s) need(s).
In this gentleman’s case I’d called to ask if he was interested in having me ghost-write a book in his name on a topic related to his vocation or field of expertise (he works with a popular manufacturing multinational, and runs the farm in his spare time).
However, before I brought that up, I asked how the farm business was doing.
He sighed and replied that he was not happy.
I asked why, and he said “These market women are just making things difficult for me. I have money set aside to expand this business, but if I cannot sell and make good profit I don’t see any point in doing that!”
When I heard that, I wasted not time in telling him about a solution I was working on, to help members of my network attract profitable bulk buyers for their farm produce, AHEAD of the time they’ll need to sell.
His interest was piqued on hearing that. I promised to send him details of the offer, once the web page with details was ready.
By the time I finished that story, the farm business owners knew I understood.
With the exception of aspects having to do with using print on demand publishing, the rest of what I told them is more or less what I have written in my VERY popular article on this theme titled “Producing Good Catfish is Important, But Finding Profitable Buyers is Imperative!”
The ideas I share in that piece are universally applicable to all businesses. That’s why I often tell those I refer to it, to simply – in their minds – replace “Catfish” in the title, with “Products”.
Not long after I began, the lady suggested that they sit down to listen to me explain further. We moved away from the stand to an empty table. They got chairs, and arranged themselves into a semi circle.
By the time I was done, it was obvious that they could see that I was right in saying the POWER to find better buyers AHEAD of time, for their intended farm produce was 100% within their control.
As I left, the lady told me they would be in touch to tell me how they’re making successful use of the ideas I’d shared with them.
I replied that THAT would make me truly happy, because too many Farm CEOs let themselves get frustrated out of business because they lack these insights.

2. Products (e.g. Delicious Chin Chin made from Cassava – Going beyond Fufu, Gari and other basic food items.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) describes itself as “Nigeria’s partner for sustainable development since 1974”.
It’s a German Not-for-Profit which has established itself in Nigeria as a force to be reckoned with in supporting micro, small and medium scale farmers to develop sustainable strategies to process their farm produce into high profile products e.g. chin chin
I was given a package I have made digital copies of and offer download links to. If you want it, email tayo at tksola dot com.
They also gave me a sample of one of their cassava chips.
There was also a booklet on making Potato cakes.
The key here is taking basic farm produce and using processing to create new products that command superior pricing and yield better profit margins for the farmer.

3. Agro Nigeria: a 100% Nigerian magazine on Agriculture*
It’s amazing that MORE people are not talking about this magazine.
On my part, I’ve been buying magazines on Agriculture from local newsstands, which I found are actually published abroad – even though they have “Africa” in their titles!
With Agro Nigeria, what we have is a magazine whose content is devoted to our market, and designed to add useful value to help various sectors of our industry grow.
I spoke with the MD (Richard-Mark Mbaram), and we found several areas in which we shared similar sentiments about what is needed to move the industry forward.
Example: Nigeria’s Comatose Extension Services
I glimpsed a subtitle on an issue of the magazine that described Nigeria’s extension services as Comatose, while speaking with him
When I told him I agreed with the use of the word “comatose” to describe that state of Agricultural Extensions Services, I could see that I struck a chord.
The truth is very little REAL extension work is happening where it is most badly needed.
The reason is little exists on the ground to make competent extension professional willing to play their roles.
Many gladly take up appointment with international organizations or in foreign institutions. Lots of research work being done by Extension experts from these parts tend to be financed or sponsored by foreign governments with a mandate to generate findings relevant to their own economy, industry and markets – NOT ours.
What is to be done?
Well, WE also have to create similarly attractive working conditions locally, to make our own extension experts willing to stick around and put their hearts into doing what they’ve been trained to do, with the required dedication and professionalism!
*Before I left the stand, the young lady manning it requested I answer some questions (in an audio recording) regarding my view of the exhibition, as well as my opinion on the future of Agriculture in Nigeria.

4. 300 Ha Pineapple Plantation in Nigeria’s Calabar – Rivers State
I spent about 20 minutes talking with Ms. Lillian Sadoh, Group Head, ITMIS & Strategy, at the Dansa Agro stand (Dansa Agro Allied Limited – member of Dangote Group)
My interest was ignited when I saw their displays of pineapple fruit replicas and cartons.
She explained that they have over 300 hectares planted with Smooth Cayenne and MD 2 varieties of the fruit, and that they export their produce.
I was surprised to hear that and told her so. I never knew Nigeria had any Pineapple plantations, talk less of one that exported the fruits.
By the time I left her stand, I’d told her as much as I could about my idea to get companies like hers, engaged in using the fruit to make drinks, to consider going a step further to use the peels at that large scale to make another range of drinks products. This would be done at low to zero costs, since the processing overheads would be the same.
I later ran into a young lady who showed interest in my flyer about the pineapple peel drinks, and noted that she’d visited Blue Skies, a UK company operating out of Ghana, engaged in processing and export of fresh cut fruit.
According to her, the company, when she visited it had begun making use of the peels to produce drinks. But she could offer no specific details.
I’d known about Blue Skies in the course of developing my ideas for making drinks using the pineapple peels, back in 2013.
Then I’d found a PDF document authored by the CEO, with impressive details of the company’s performance, including the fact that they got an award from the Queen of England herself.
For me, I continue to look for ways to get more people at various levels, to develop interest in getting more of the pineapple fruit, by using its peels for drinks/cake making like I’ve proven can be done.
NB: I’ve embedded some photos of the items mentioned above. If you want the full package, email tayo at tksola dot com or fill/submit the form at http://tayosolagbade.com/contact.htm
[PS: In case you’re not aware, I plan to launch a family business with my kids and we will be using my specially developed production process to produce own unique range of branded specialty drinks and cakes, for sale.
It all began when I tried to show some Beninese women pineapple sellers on the university campus in Benin Republic’s Calavi, that they could make drinks to sell, using the large quantities of peels they kept throwing away at the end of each day’s sales.
My kids now make the drinks using charcoal stoves. I’ve also taught them to bake pineapple peel based cakes without ovens.
I’ve known about this Presco Plc since I worked in Guinness Nigeria Plc – Benin Brewery (Oct. ’94 to Dec. 2001)
They are based in Edo State.
But I never really had any clear idea of the nature of business they did – especially how they extract specialty oils of about 7 kinds from different parts of the palm fruit.
My ignorance ended when I saw the glass jars put on display at their stand during the last day of the exhibition.
I was one of several people who looked in wonder at the different coloured oils, in a row of jars, as one of the company’s 2 employees manning the stands explained how the oils were made.
Yesterday (Tuesday 1st December 2015), I placed a call to the company’s Head of Sales and Marketing – Jalaj ARORA, and I suggested that the company consider employing low to zero cost Web Marketing to create more awareness about this interesting ways the palm fruits gets used to produce the range of high quality oils Presco Plc is known for.
Done right, this can really create buzz about the company and boost more awareness and recognition for them, in a way that would enhance public perception, and lead to better business opportunities.
He told me he liked the idea, and asked that I do a write-up on what I proposed, and send it in so he could forward it to the Head Office.
However, I did some thinking and decided to create a mind map to share with readers here on this blog, using this idea as a Case Study. As is my habit, I want to kill as many birds as possible with one stone. This way, others who have similar needs can use the ideas from here.
So, the mind map will FIRST be shared here, and then to my email subscribers, AFTER which I’ll send him a link to download it from here.

PS: Since I’ve only featured 4 companies I visited in this report, I imagine you’re thinking THIS:
Question: But Tayo, what about the other companies that were present at the exhibition? Don’t you have any information about them and what they put on display?
My Answer: Well, I got a copy of the Agra Innovate brochure which offers useful information about all the exhibitors, the sponsors, media partners and so on.
To get a zipped folder containing digital versions of ALL the pages in that document, email me via info at the farm ceo dot net or fill/submit the form at http://tayosolagbade.com/contact.htm
*I could have uploaded all the digital versions of the items I referred to above, but I simply do NOT have the time or patience to do that. Plus, there is a potential bandwidth issue to consider. That’s why I’d prefer to email the zipped folders to any interested persons. So, if you want it, let me know!

Yesterday, after returning from the Agra Innovate Exhibition on Lagos-Nigeria’s Victoria Island, I stopped at the office of a small firm to see the CEO.
While waiting, I overheard a young female employee voicing the following truly hilarious definition of Black Friday sales based on a Jumia.com TV ad being shown on the office TV about their (then impending) Black Friday (today’s) sales offers:
“These people are not serious with this Black Friday thing they are doing. So they plan to only sell products that have patches of black on them? What is the sense in that?”
I was still trying to get my jaw that had dropped to go back into its normal position, when her equally clueless male colleague said:
“Nooo, that’s not why they call it Black Friday O. It began in the USA to encourage black people who did not have enough money, by selling at low prices on that day.”
“Haba, this is serious misinformation!” I exclaimed to myself.
But just then I was called to see the CEO and never got to suggest they try using Google to learn the right meaning for the expression.
The truth is I’ve known about Black Friday for years, and it always comes the day after Thanksgiving Day in the US (I.e the 4th Thursday in the month of November)
According to Wikipedia, it generally signals the start of the festive Christmas shopping season.
I’ve actually taken advantage of Black Friday sales to buy products at 90% discount from online merchants, especially those based in the US.
But I’ve never had a Black Friday promotional sale of my own – before today, that is!
The key principle in Black Friday promotional selling is the surprise element: Buyers do not get to know exact details of the offers to be unveiled, until the D-day, otherwise they could plan ahead and the sellers would be shortchanged.
That’s why I’ve not given any hint of my plans before now.
However, in my usual habit of putting a twist to any idea or concept I adopt from other cultures, I’ve been calling up individual clients I’ve made offers they’ve not taken up, to subtly sound them out.
Most responses I got told me it would be good to make a Black Friday offer to them.
So here’s my hacked Black Friday blanket promotional selling offer:
1. Regarding services I offer, I’ll I’m sending phone SMS Black Friday offers to sweeten the deal for clients I made offers. For those I can’t SMS, I’ll call them up to get the required Yes or No response.
The time is now 2a.m.
If you’re a client and have not received my Black Friday offer by 10a.m Nigerian time, send me SMS on +234-803-302-1263 or call.
2. Regarding products I offer:
A. For clients/past buyers:
Get any product(s) of your choice at 70% discount throughout today.
Arrived from Cotonou yesterday p.m and managed to visit Landmark Centre, venue of the Agra Innovate exhibition on Victoria Island here in Lagos.
The event certainly proved to be great for networking. Almost got myself dragged to do a full lecture on Farm Biz marketing with a group. Before then I’d run out of flyers I could give out!
I’ll write in more detail by weekend. But here’s an appetizer of talking points I’ll be focusing on, based on my discussions and interactions with various stakeholders.
1. Farm CEOs Lack of Sales and Marketing Savvy REMAINS a major problem.
It’s a serious challenge limiting what I estimate to be over 90% of farm business owners and agro allied entreprises.
In less than 3 hours at the exhibition venue, the conversation I had with various stakeholders there proved most still do NOT understand that they have to THINK as entrepreneurs, with smart marketing drive, if they want to succeed with their agro based businesses.
I’ll be sharing highlights from my interaction with a VERY animated group of farm business owners who found my ideas in this regard so compelling that they arranged themselves into a semi circle, to listen to me explain further.
2. Products made from Cassava – Going beyond fufu, gari and other basic food items.
I came across a German Not-for-Profit which has established itself in Nigeria as a force to be reckoned with in supporting small and micro scale farmers to develop sustainable strategies to process their farm produce into high profile products e.g chips.
I was given a package I will make digital copies of and put on my website for viewing. They also gave me a sample of one of their cassava chips. There was also a booklet on making Potato cakes.
The key here is taking basic farm produce and using processing to create new products that command superior pricing and yield better profit margins for the farmer.
3. AgroNigeria – a 100% indigenous magazine on Agriculture
It’s amazing that MORE people are not talking about this magazine. On my part, I’ve been buying magazines on Agriculture from local newstands, which I found are actually published abroad – even though they have “Africa” in their titles!
With AgroNigeria, what we have is a magazine whose content is devoted to our market, and designed to add useful value to help various sectors of our indistry grow.
I spoke with the MD, and we found several areas in which we shared similar sentiments about what is needed to move the industry forward. I intend to highlight a few when I write my full report on this outing.
There’s more, but these are the main ones I felt most impacted me. If you were there, maybe you could say a word or two in the comments, now, or when I post my full report on this. I intend it to be a downloadble PDF so as to send it to other stakeholders who may find the information useful.

I’ll start by saying that I was already doing some of the things Steve recommended. But his article woke me up to the need to be more results-focused/creative and less mechanical in using them. A few months after reading it in September 2011, I’d reinvented my online presence, to reflect my new focus – and a year later, I was fully engaged in “doing it”.
In April 2013, I relocated to Benin Republic and put even more effort into “doing it”, to achieve my goal of generating more income via passive channels from sales of my products and services.
Those who have followed my writing since that time will know that I’ve shared many stories about how I now earn over 80% of my income online based on the steady generation of sales leads by what I call my Web Marketing System (WMS).
Steve’s article was one of the key resources I studied, to gain the practical insights I used to improve my WMS to get the great results I enjoy today.
In his article, Steve said he would suggest “NO particular order” for implementation of the 12 ideas…
However, the results I’ve gotten from making practical use of them to find new clients for myself over the years convince me that one WILL reap optimal returns by:
1. implementing Steve’s 12 ideas in close to the order I’ve numbered them in my mind map.
2. implementing MORE THAN ONE of Steve’s 12 ideas simultaneously.
I will now explain what I mean for EACH of the 12 ideas…
Note that I’ve grouped them into 2 categories
Group A is what I call “The Foundation” and includes those ideas from Steve’s list that I numbered from 1 to 6:
If you want to generate sales leads with less effort, using less money and time, ensure you start doing ALL 6 as quickly as possible in the order they appear and/or simultaneously.
1. Write articles to establish your credibility
I’ve been doing this since 2005
2. Write a free report for your website.
I’ve been writing FREE downloadable reports for my target audiences since 2006
I published my Self-Development Bible as a paperback in 2005. Since then I’ve written other print as well as digital books which sell from my online store at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/sdaproducts
6. Guest blog
Steve is right. Getting published on high profile blogs can help you build name/brand recognition, and attract potential clients.
But to get taken seriously by a blog owner, you need to have some writing you’ve done, to SHOW him/her.
When you have a website/blog brimming with quality original content penned by you, plus free downloadable reports on your specialty, a newsletter, and a FREE chapter to a book you published, it will be much easier for blog owners to BELIEVE that having a Guest Blog by you can add value to their brands!
By the time you send you offer in, and they check you out, YOU will have less “work” to do convincing them. That’s what happened when I reached out to editor at Africabusinesscommunities.com, and I got 5 of my Farm Business articles published there.
Some clients who purchased my Farm Support software told me they found me through my Guest Posts on that website.
Group B includes those ideas from Steve’s list that I numbered from 7 to 12 in my mind map:
One or more of the above Group A ideas plays a role(s) in making the prospect take notice of you and/or get him/her into “buy-mode”. Take it from me when I say they can ALL be started up within ONE month. You can either do it yourself, or engage someone to do it for you.
Without putting the Group A based foundation in place, trying to implement the ideas in Group B (discussed below) will not go as well as it can.
Let me now give examples to explain my thinking with regard to each of the ideas in Group B in relation to those in Group A.
7. Send out a very narrowly targeted direct mail piece.
When you send out a direct mail piece, you want to give yourself the opportunity to achieve optimal impact with your offer. That will however be a function of the believability of the message you send.
Having Group A in place is a powerful way to achieve that. Without that foundation, or with a haphazard version of it, your target audience may find it hard to buy-in to your direct mail offer.
Put yourself in their shoes, and I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.
9. Join some type of business networking group, or start your own.
When you meet someone at a networking event, and chat for a while, you’ll probably exchange call cards, other contact details. Chances are good that at some point later, s/he’ll get around to Googling your name, to see what s/he can learn about you – possibly with regard to the service you offer.
What s/he sees in the Google results page, especially what turns up when the web links are clicked can make or mar your chances.
Group A’s 6 components, diligently implemented, can make you look as credible, and competent as you want him/her to know you are.
The result would be that s/he would end up giving you a call to take the relationship further. When you don’t have that kind of foundation, and you go networking, you’ll have MORE work to do to convince prospects to hire you.
10. Partner with professionals who have complementary services
I’ve not had much success doing this, but I continue to explore viable opportunities to do it. Having said that, teaming up with Burt Dubin to promote his speaker-mentoring products to experts across Africa has exposed me to persons who nursed interest in his solutions as well as some of mine. Some have gone on to become clients.
It goes without saying that having Group A components in place played a very important role in making that happen.
11. Join a trade association related to your niche.
What I’ve said in 9 above, applies here.
You will be joining with a purpose in mind. The question is what have you put in place to enable you maximize the opportunities that present themselves during your interactions with others in that association.
Having Group A in place gives you potential talking points you can subtly use to open sales conversations.
You could say the following to a prospect:
“I notice you have lots of knowledge and experience that can help others in your field. Have you ever considered writing a book based on your expertise, to use in your business marketing? My book on <xyz> has opened doors to new clients/speaking opportunities for me. If you lack the time or training, I offer a ghost-writing service for busy experts that you can use. “
Since my Group A elements include FREE chapter preview downloads, and generic offer PDFs on my website, if the prospect indicates interest in learning more, I simply offer to email him links to them.
Putting Group A in place implies doing a lot of the thinking up front and creating content that will lead your prospect to the end of the sale process.
12. Give a speech monthly related to your specialty.
Even if you’re offering to speak for FREE, potential attendees and meeting planners will want to be sure that coming together to listen to you will be a worthwhile experience.
So, don’t just go giving out flyers offering to speak. Others may be doing the same thing. Ensure that what you give out leads to other stuff you’ve setup that can help the decision maker pick you over others.
If you have the Group A foundation in place, including a video of yourself speaking, and a Speaker One Sheet(s) they can view, whatever you say in your interactions, will carry enough weight to get you invited to speak.
When you meet a potential client, it is not often that you get to walk away with cash in your hands or a signed cheque you can cash the very same day…
Quite often it tends to take a while before you both agree on what you can do that would be worth paying for.
What I’ve learned working from a socioeconomic environment, in which trust is not easy to establish is that having Group A in place can dramatically diminish the work you have to do to gain trust, and close sales!
Think about it and you’ll see what I mean.
Most clients/buyers I’ve won over in and out Africa basically came to me 80% convinced about hiring me, or buying from me – after getting exposed to my Group A foundation. In the course of interacting with them, I then did enough to get them to 100% – and close the sale.
When some were not so sure (maybe at 50%), the Group A foundation I had in place was what I intelligently deployed (in conjunction where applicable, with Group B ideas) at various stages of interaction, over time, till they bought..
Summary: My numbering of Steve’s ideas does not mean EACH idea has to be implement strictly in the order it appears.
There is plenty of room for overlap. But my point is some need to happen, or be in place, before others are implemented, to ensure optimal returns.
In particular, ideas 1 to 6 in Group A need to be implemented before any major effort is put into implementing 7 to 12.
Steve said: Write articles to establish your credibility – and he is SO right!
I read somewhere that article marketing is a timeless marketing strategy. My experiences since I began doing it in 2005 confirm it’s true.
Article marketing continues to be a truly rewarding endeavour for me. I actually consider it to be the most important of ALL the 12 ideas Steve listed.
WARNING: In writing for marketing, avoid fretting about content thieves. Focus instead on adding useful value to what exists!
Some experts are not keen on using their writing for marketing because they fear exposing their good quality and original content to possible theft
I can confirm that I’ve had to call out some website owners for using my articles from Ezinearticles.com without including my byline, or even my name.
There will always be content thieves lurking around.
But not doing it at all is like to hurt you more – because then few potential clients will ever get to KNOW just how awesome your writing content can be.
So, forget the negatives and focus on the countless positives that can accrue to you.
On the flip side, YOU must also watch yourself. Never be guilty of abusing the work of others.
Give due credit. Always.
PS: Note that I have never met with Steve Roller, or even interacted with him in any way.
In other words, he probably does not even know I exist.
But his ideas have helped me take my business forward. That’s why I created my mind map to share Steve’s wisdom – visually – with others who may need it, as we approach yet another new year of business.

The Farm CEO Spotlight Interview (FCSI) series is designed as a public service to give other Farm CEOs access to ready-to-use experience-based information and education from fellow farmers who make discoveries or develop unique solutions/ideas they believe can help others.
The purpose is to promote experience-sharing amongst farmers, about Indigenous Knowledge Systems (aka IKS) they develop, to boost performance.
Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) are tried and tested practical techniques/methods developed by individual (or groups of) farmers, to get improved results, often through innovative modification of existing procedures.
This maiden edition of the FCSI features (questions/answers, with photos and audio excerpts) Roseline Imoudu – owner of a Recirculating Aquaculture System (aka RAS) based Seed Catfish Production Farm Business in Ibadan-Nigeria.
She shares insights from her first run of a newly installed RAS system, mainly from a diligent record keeping and best practice perspective.
Especially noteworthy is her true story about how good management helped her record surprisingly minimal losses, when her RAS experienced severe water shortage due to a prolonged borehole pump fault.
She also offers tips to aspiring Farm Business Owners, which existing farm owners may also find useful.
=====Interview Starts====
1. The Farm CEO™: What kind of Commercial Catfish Farming System do you operate?
Roseline Imoudu: The Fish Farming System I am operating for production of seed catfish is the Recirculatory Aquaculture System; also known or referred to as RAS. And I am using plastic chemical tanks for it.
2. The Farm CEO™: What informed your choice of this system and how long have you been running it?
Roseline Imoudu: Well, I started with the flow-through system about November 2014 after an internship with a farm at Moniya Ibadan. I was making an average sales of about 3,500 to 5,500 seed catfish in a production. I happened to pay a visit to the poultry farm of one of my husband’s friends and I got introduced to RAS and its basic flow operation and privileges.
I witnessed one production run and saw:

In this issue of my Speaking/Web Marketing IDEAS newsletter, I feature a UK based Nigerian expert who overcame the perpetual discouragement and frustration of being born into potentially crippling poverty (that saw him hawking groceries on Nigerian streets between the ages of 13 to 21 years!), to become a highly recognized and successful international Speaker, Business Growth Coach and Marketing Consultant.
To give you an idea of the impact he’s making in his immediate market, consider this:
You don’t get asked to host an event of that status unless organizers are convinced you know your stuff!
So, not only does this rare breed Nigerian expert know his stuff, but he is also exceptionally gifted at communicating what he knows in a manner that enables others easily learn from him.
How do I know all this you wonder?
Especially since I’m NOT based in the UK??
…and I have never even met him in the flesh myself???
I was then based in Calavi – a town outside Benin Republic’s commercial capital – Cotonou. In that email, he’d complimented me on the work I was doing online – through which he’d found me.
He later signed up for my newsletter. After some weeks we had a few Skype phone conversations in which we shared details of our backgrounds and experiences from our past lives. We struck it off right from the start – the synergy was almost palpable!
As time went on, he expressed an in interest in connecting with Burt Dubin (whose speaker mentoring products and services I promote), and that further deepened our relationship.
He has since commenced a mentoring program under Burt Dubin’s tutelage, and is now dramatically boosting his name/brand marketing reach and impact, towards reaching his primary target audience: small and medium business owners.
For me, it’s been interesting to study this gentleman whose story of rising from grass to grace is so compelling.
By way of interest, this is NOT the first time I’m writing about this Nigerian in diaspora.
Back in 2013, I actually transcribed a 1 hour video interview he granted Andy Brine, into a verbatim text based PDF transcript, which remains available on this blog (click here) for download by interested persons.
That PDF’s introduction section explains why I go to such lengths to transcribe video recordings to text version. But briefly here I’ll say my purpose is to distill ready–to-use wisdom from experiences shared by authentic achievers, into a format that others can learn from – regardless of their limitations.
You see, watching a 1 hour video on Youtube, even for people who have FREE Internet, may not always be convenient. Also, even when it’s convenient, or you have the time to watch it, not everyone will find it easy to EXTRACT useful lessons from what they see/hear in the video, to improve their lives.
As a Performance Improvement Specialist, I have a passion for studying people and processes, and identifying why one person may do better than another person, when both are exposed to similar preparation and opportunities. The insights I’ve gained from doing the foregoing, over the past 2 decades have taught me to offer useful information and education to those who need it, through as many different channels, and in as many different formats as possible.
People differ greatly in their styles – and rates – of learning, as well as in their abilities to apply what they learn to productive ends.
I believe this exceptional Nigerian expert’s success story perfectly illustrates the point I’m making…
Despite myriad obstacles he had to face in his formative years, right into his early 20’s, he doggedly explored a variety of learning avenues, to find a path to the success he wanted. [NB: You can read the story here – &/or download the PDF]
It is my considered opinion, that a major reason why his success is so noteworthy is that his journey was far from smooth, and involved lots of interruption. Not many people who do what he does (as a speaker, business coach and marketing consultant), had to pass through similar trials before arriving.
The success and recognition he enjoys today proves that he both learned his lessons well, and also developed the ability to apply what he learned to excel in his chosen vocation – regardless of the adversity he faced.
THAT, is what makes him exceptional – and it’s the reason why he’s been chosen to host a BCTC seminar, which is the first of its kind in the history of the Chambers!
Incidentally, apart from having Skype phone conversations with him, I have also listened several times to recordings of Efe delivering his trademark speeches to CEOs.
Without any attempt at exaggeration, I can confirm that he is a truly effective speaker. In other words, I share the sentiments expressed by those interviewed in the above video about him!
Final Words: Efe’s example proves ANY Nigerian/African can excel internationally as an EXPERT in his/her field
Like I said in a Facebook post last month, Efe’s rising profile and growing success as a Business Coach, Speaker and Marketing Consultant in the UK market and beyond is something that should make Nigerians and Africans proud.
Not only does his success make it obvious that being competent can work wonders, his story also proves that ANYONE can do it – no matter where you come from, or how disadvantaged your circumstances.
It’s true that not everyone offers solutions that are relevant to the needs of the international market place.
However, I’ve found that many Nigerian/African experts who DO HAVE such solutions rarely target the international marketplace.
Speaking with some of them revealed that MANY feel it’s impossible to win clients/buyers outside their immediate markets (Nigeria/Benin or Africa).
Yet, the Internet has made it so much easier today, to make powerful marketing impact across the globe, at low to zero cost!
A truly competent expert should be able to command serious attention, recognition and income in his/her chosen field or specialty – ANYWHERE.
All it takes is to set challenging goals that you then pursue vigorously, on a never-ending-basis. Then use the web – creatively and intelligently – to share your work with colleagues and potential clients/buyers in other parts of the world.
Sooner than later, they’ll begin to take positive note of you.
A branded Facebook business page (integrated with a response-generating website/blog) is a proven way: Potential clients (local or international) will often take what they see on YOUR page as indicative of value you have to offer.
If you use your marketing platform right, it will make potential clients take notice of, then connect with – and ultimately buy from – you.
My point is you can get noticed (and paid) for what you do, by people OUTSIDE your immediate/local market – who fit your target audience profile.
This is something I have done – and continue to do – myself, in the multiple disciplines I’m engaged in as a multipreneur.
I am regularly contacted online by – and have phone conversations with – enquirers from within and outside Africa (Uganda, Namibia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Canada, UK, Philippines, Australia, India, Israel, Pakistan, Argentine, Mexico etc), regarding products and services I offer (especially my growing range of Farm Business Solutions).
Every now and then, some go on to send payment to me from their respective countries…
That’s why I know what I propose works. I have countless stories I share with my clients and audiences on how it has worked for me for YEARS.
I learnt this strategy by studying Burt Dubin, who has served clients across multiple continents remotely, using the web for 3 decades.
Efe Ohwofasa was featured as one of the invited speakers at http://www.embracelove.co.uk/the-speakers.html (alongside Camilla Carr, Sue Stone, Noel Lockyer-Stevens, Sarah Haywood, Juliet Vorster, Dr Krishan Ramyead, Victor Chetcuti and Paul Newton)
