In this issue I share insights I gained from using a self-marketing method based on implementation of 12 ideas for generating a reliable stream of new client enquiries, as discussed in an article written by AWAI’s Steve Roller (Read Steve’s awesome article at www.awaionline.com/2011/09/how-to-increase-your-harvest-of-new-clients).

In it, he recommended implementing ONE idea per month, over a year, then “Calculate the return on each and adjust accordingly.” I end my experience based analysis by suggesting you adopt Steve’s 12 ideas for use in your marketing in the incoming year…”and beyond”.

This analysis is based on a downloadable mind map I’ve created, that distills the wisdom from Steve Roller’s article into a diagrammatic one-page format (see below) for easy reference.

I’ll start by saying that I was already doing some of the things Steve recommended. But his article woke me up to the need to be more results-focused/creative and less mechanical in using them. A few months after reading it in September 2011, I’d reinvented my online presence, to reflect my new focus – and a year later, I was fully engaged in “doing it”.

In April 2013, I relocated to Benin Republic and put even more effort into “doing it”, to achieve my goal of generating more income via passive channels from sales of my products and services.

Those who have followed my writing since that time will know that I’ve shared many stories about how I now earn over 80% of my income online based on the steady generation of sales leads by what I call my Web Marketing System (WMS).

Steve’s article was one of the key resources I studied, to gain the practical insights I used to improve my WMS to get the great results I enjoy today.

In his article, Steve said he would suggest “NO particular order” for implementation of the 12 ideas…

However, the results I’ve gotten from making practical use of them to find new clients for myself over the years convince me that one WILL reap optimal returns by:

1. implementing Steve’s 12 ideas in close to the order I’ve numbered them in my mind map.

2. implementing MORE THAN ONE of Steve’s 12 ideas simultaneously.

I will now explain what I mean for EACH of the 12 ideas…

Note that I’ve grouped them into 2 categories

Group A is what I call “The Foundation” and includes those ideas from Steve’s list that I numbered from 1 to 6:

If you want to generate sales leads with less effort, using less money and time, ensure you start doing ALL 6 as quickly as possible in the order they appear and/or simultaneously.

1. Write articles to establish your credibility

I’ve been doing this since 2005

2. Write a free report for your website.

I’ve been writing FREE downloadable reports for my target audiences since 2006

3. Tie in auto-responders with your free report.

Visitors to my website submit a form which sends the FREE reports via auto responder. I recently launched the first of what will be a series of Scheduled Email Auto responder. Courses titled “Farm and Grow Rich”

4. Start a monthly e-newsletter.

I used to publish a Monthly Self-Development Digest from 2006 to 2012, but now publish this daily blog, THIS weekly FREE Speaking/Web Marketing IDEAS newsletter, and a weekly newspaper called The Farm CEO, for paid subscribers.

5. Write a book.

I published my Self-Development Bible as a paperback in 2005. Since then I’ve written other print as well as digital books which sell from my online store at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/sdaproducts

6. Guest blog

Steve is right. Getting published on high profile blogs can help you build name/brand recognition, and attract potential clients.

But to get taken seriously by a blog owner, you need to have some writing you’ve done, to SHOW him/her.

When you have a website/blog brimming with quality original content penned by you, plus free downloadable reports on your specialty, a newsletter, and a FREE chapter to a book you published, it will be much easier for blog owners to BELIEVE that having a Guest Blog by you can add value to their brands!

By the time you send you offer in, and they check you out, YOU will have less “work” to do convincing them. That’s what happened when I reached out to editor at Africabusinesscommunities.com, and I got 5 of my Farm Business articles published there.

Some clients who purchased my Farm Support software told me they found me through my Guest Posts on that website.

Group B includes those ideas from Steve’s list that I numbered from 7 to 12 in my mind map:

One or more of the above Group A ideas plays a role(s) in making the prospect take notice of you and/or get him/her into “buy-mode”. Take it from me when I say they can ALL be started up within ONE month. You can either do it yourself, or engage someone to do it for you.

Without putting the Group A based foundation in place, trying to implement the ideas in Group B (discussed below) will not go as well as it can.

Let me now give examples to explain my thinking with regard to each of the ideas in Group B in relation to those in Group A.

7. Send out a very narrowly targeted direct mail piece.

When you send out a direct mail piece, you want to give yourself the opportunity to achieve optimal impact with your offer. That will however be a function of the believability of the message you send.

Having Group A in place is a powerful way to achieve that. Without that foundation, or with a haphazard version of it, your target audience may find it hard to buy-in to your direct mail offer.

Put yourself in their shoes, and I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.

8. Build a second website focused on your niche.

My Excel Heaven website and Cost-Saving Farm Business IDEAS website are both located on sub domains of my flagship website – www.tayosolagbade.com

9. Join some type of business networking group, or start your own.

When you meet someone at a networking event, and chat for a while, you’ll probably exchange call cards, other contact details. Chances are good that at some point later, s/he’ll get around to Googling your name, to see what s/he can learn about you – possibly with regard to the service you offer.

What s/he sees in the Google results page, especially what turns up when the web links are clicked can make or mar your chances.

Group A’s 6 components, diligently implemented, can make you look as credible, and competent as you want him/her to know you are.

The result would be that s/he would end up giving you a call to take the relationship further. When you don’t have that kind of foundation, and you go networking, you’ll have MORE work to do to convince prospects to hire you.

10. Partner with professionals who have complementary services

I’ve not had much success doing this, but I continue to explore viable opportunities to do it. Having said that, teaming up with Burt Dubin to promote his speaker-mentoring products to experts across Africa has exposed me to persons who nursed interest in his solutions as well as some of mine. Some have gone on to become clients.

It goes without saying that having Group A components in place played a very important role in making that happen.

11. Join a trade association related to your niche.

What I’ve said in 9 above, applies here.

You will be joining with a purpose in mind. The question is what have you put in place to enable you maximize the opportunities that present themselves during your interactions with others in that association.

Having Group A in place gives you potential talking points you can subtly use to open sales conversations.

You could say the following to a prospect:

“I notice you have lots of knowledge and experience that can help others in your field. Have you ever considered writing a book based on your expertise, to use in your business marketing? My book on <xyz> has opened doors to new clients/speaking opportunities for me. If you lack the time or training, I offer a ghost-writing service for busy experts that you can use. “

Since my Group A elements include FREE chapter preview downloads, and generic offer PDFs on my website, if the prospect indicates interest in learning more, I simply offer to email him links to them.

Putting Group A in place implies doing a lot of the thinking up front and creating content that will lead your prospect to the end of the sale process.

12. Give a speech monthly related to your specialty.

Even if you’re offering to speak for FREE, potential attendees and meeting planners will want to be sure that coming together to listen to you will be a worthwhile experience.

So, don’t just go giving out flyers offering to speak. Others may be doing the same thing. Ensure that what you give out leads to other stuff you’ve setup that can help the decision maker pick you over others.

If you have the Group A foundation in place, including a video of yourself speaking, and a Speaker One Sheet(s) they can view, whatever you say in your interactions, will carry enough weight to get you invited to speak.

When you meet a potential client, it is not often that you get to walk away with cash in your hands or a signed cheque you can cash the very same day…

Quite often it tends to take a while before you both agree on what you can do that would be worth paying for.

What I’ve learned working from a socioeconomic environment, in which trust is not easy to establish is that having Group A in place can dramatically diminish the work you have to do to gain trust, and close sales!

Think about it and you’ll see what I mean.

Most clients/buyers I’ve won over in and out Africa basically came to me 80% convinced about hiring me, or buying from me – after getting exposed to my Group A foundation. In the course of interacting with them, I then did enough to get them to 100% – and close the sale.

When some were not so sure (maybe at 50%), the Group A foundation I had in place was what I intelligently deployed (in conjunction where applicable, with Group B ideas) at various stages of interaction, over time, till they bought..

Summary: My numbering of Steve’s ideas does not mean EACH idea has to be implement strictly in the order it appears.

There is plenty of room for overlap. But my point is some need to happen, or be in place, before others are implemented, to ensure optimal returns.

In particular, ideas 1 to 6 in Group A need to be implemented before any major effort is put into implementing 7 to 12.

Steve said: Write articles to establish your credibility – and he is SO right!

I read somewhere that article marketing is a timeless marketing strategy. My experiences since I began doing it in 2005 confirm it’s true.

Article marketing continues to be a truly rewarding endeavour for me. I actually consider it to be the most important of ALL the 12 ideas Steve listed.

NB: By way of interest, I adopted writing for business marketing after reading Burt Dubin’s Speaker Mentoring article titled “Why and How to Get Published”(click to read it) many years ago.

Today, I ghost-write for clients in different countries, via my freelance writing service I offer, and most of them found me through exposure to my writing (on this blog, via this newsletter, The Farm CEO newspaper, white papers/reports, books etc).

Apart from the money I get paid, my writing has also earned me extensive name/brand recognition over the years.

You can – and should – aspire to reap similar rewards with your writing.

Steve Roller’s 12 ideas provide a perfect blueprint – and my mind map will hopefully make it easier for you to remember them!

WARNING: In writing for marketing, avoid fretting about content thieves. Focus instead on adding useful value to what exists!

Some experts are not keen on using their writing for marketing because they fear exposing their good quality and original content to possible theft

I can confirm that I’ve had to call out some website owners for using my articles from Ezinearticles.com without including my byline, or even my name.

There will always be content thieves lurking around.

But not doing it at all is like to hurt you more – because then few potential clients will ever get to KNOW just how awesome your writing content can be.

So, forget the negatives and focus on the countless positives that can accrue to you.

On the flip side, YOU must also watch yourself. Never be guilty of abusing the work of others.

Give due credit. Always.

PS: Note that I have never met with Steve Roller, or even interacted with him in any way.

In other words, he probably does not even know I exist.

But his ideas have helped me take my business forward. That’s why I created my mind map to share Steve’s wisdom – visually – with others who may need it, as we approach yet another new year of business.

…and I have never even met him in the flesh myself???

It all seems like yesterday now, but almost 3 years have now passed since he sent me his first e-mail…

That happened about a month after I relocated to Benin Republic from Lagos-Nigeria in April 2013.

I was then based in Calavi – a town outside Benin Republic’s commercial capital – Cotonou. In that email, he’d complimented me on the work I was doing online – through which he’d found me.

He later signed up for my newsletter. After some weeks we had a few Skype phone conversations in which we shared details of our backgrounds and experiences from our past lives. We struck it off right from the start – the synergy was almost palpable!

As time went on, he expressed an in interest in connecting with Burt Dubin (whose speaker mentoring products and services I promote), and that further deepened our relationship.

He has since commenced a mentoring program under Burt Dubin’s tutelage, and is now dramatically boosting his name/brand marketing reach and impact, towards reaching his primary target audience: small and medium business owners.

But briefly here I’ll say my purpose is to distill ready–to-use wisdom from experiences shared by authentic achievers, into a format that others can learn from – regardless of their limitations.

You see, watching a 1 hour video on Youtube, even for people who have FREE Internet, may not always be convenient. Also, even when it’s convenient, or you have the time to watch it, not everyone will find it easy to EXTRACT useful lessons from what they see/hear in the video, to improve their lives.

As a Performance Improvement Specialist, I have a passion for studying people and processes, and identifying why one person may do better than another person, when both are exposed to similar preparation and opportunities. The insights I’ve gained from doing the foregoing, over the past 2 decades have taught me to offer useful information and education to those who need it, through as many different channels, and in as many different formats as possible.

People differ greatly in their styles – and rates – of learning, as well as in their abilities to apply what they learn to productive ends.

I believe this exceptional Nigerian expert’s success story perfectly illustrates the point I’m making…

It is my considered opinion, that a major reason why his success is so noteworthy is that his journey was far from smooth, and involved lots of interruption. Not many people who do what he does (as a speaker, business coach and marketing consultant), had to pass through similar trials before arriving.

The success and recognition he enjoys today proves that he both learned his lessons well, and also developed the ability to apply what he learned to excel in his chosen vocation – regardless of the adversity he faced.

Incidentally, apart from having Skype phone conversations with him, I have also listened several times to recordings of Efe delivering his trademark speeches to CEOs.

Without any attempt at exaggeration, I can confirm that he is a truly effective speaker. In other words, I share the sentiments expressed by those interviewed in the above video about him!

Final Words: Efe’s example proves ANY Nigerian/African can excel internationally as an EXPERT in his/her field

Like I said in a Facebook post last month, Efe’s rising profile and growing success as a Business Coach, Speaker and Marketing Consultant in the UK market and beyond is something that should make Nigerians and Africans proud.

Not only does his success make it obvious that being competent can work wonders, his story also proves that ANYONE can do it – no matter where you come from, or how disadvantaged your circumstances.

It’s true that not everyone offers solutions that are relevant to the needs of the international market place.

However, I’ve found that many Nigerian/African experts who DO HAVE such solutions rarely target the international marketplace.

Speaking with some of them revealed that MANY feel it’s impossible to win clients/buyers outside their immediate markets (Nigeria/Benin or Africa).

Yet, the Internet has made it so much easier today, to make powerful marketing impact across the globe, at low to zero cost!

A truly competent expert should be able to command serious attention, recognition and income in his/her chosen field or specialty – ANYWHERE.

All it takes is to set challenging goals that you then pursue vigorously, on a never-ending-basis. Then use the web – creatively and intelligently – to share your work with colleagues and potential clients/buyers in other parts of the world.

Sooner than later, they’ll begin to take positive note of you.

A branded Facebook business page (integrated with a response-generating website/blog) is a proven way: Potential clients (local or international) will often take what they see on YOUR page as indicative of value you have to offer.

If you use your marketing platform right, it will make potential clients take notice of, then connect with – and ultimately buy from – you.

My point is you can get noticed (and paid) for what you do, by people OUTSIDE your immediate/local market – who fit your target audience profile.

This is something I have done – and continue to do – myself, in the multiple disciplines I’m engaged in as a multipreneur.

I am regularly contacted online by – and have phone conversations with – enquirers from within and outside Africa (Uganda, Namibia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Canada, UK, Philippines, Australia, India, Israel, Pakistan, Argentine, Mexico etc), regarding products and services I offer (especially my growing range of Farm Business Solutions).

Every now and then, some go on to send payment to me from their respective countries…

That’s why I know what I propose works. I have countless stories I share with my clients and audiences on how it has worked for me for YEARS.

I learnt this strategy by studying Burt Dubin, who has served clients across multiple continents remotely, using the web for 3 decades.

Chris Guillebeau is one of my role models in Location Independent Entrepreneuring. I’ve found he also has a bias for doing more than one thing at a time – which has been a way of life for me for over 2.5 decades(in both paid as well as self-employment, as I’ve explained in past articles linked below)

And through him, I learnt the great Steve Martin achieved globally recognized successes by doing the opposite of what majority believe and advocate to us right from our you: by being a “Jack of Many (not ALL) Trades”…or Multipreneur!

Science Subjects are NOT Superior to the Arts: The Case for Self-Managed Schooling

Despite agreeing with virtually everything else he said in his THIS DAY newspaper article on the recent NBL sponsored Maltina Teacher of the year competition, I TOTALLY disagree with the sentiment expressed in that piece (see quote below) by Olusegun Adeniyi, that suggests he considers science subjects more important than those in the arts, humanities etc.

Nothing could be further from the truth, as I explain in this PDF white paper…AND as the above quote credited to Albert Einstein himself indicates.

[Video] Graduate Teacher Who Could Not Read Her Own Certificate, Nabbed by Gov. Adams Oshiomole At a Screening Session to Unmask Teachers With Forged Credentials.

The 1st time I watched this video of Gov. Oshiomole and the teacher who could not read her own certificate at a screening event monitored by the former, I truly was NOT surprised.

Why?

Because for years in the course of coaching staff of some client companies to use software and websites I built, I’d noticed a shocking deficiency in reading, comprehension and writing skills in many of the individuals assigned to understudy me.

And this despite the fact that they readily brandished “certificates” as proof that they’d successfully completed programs in various disciplines.

I believe the reason we don’t often “see” these quacks till they get exposed as happened in Edo state is that we, Nigerians, often refuse to employ critical thinking.

Take that teacher’s case for instance. Everyone seems so focused on her. We seem to have all missed the fact that she could not have perpetrated this fraud alone!

For instance, some person must have interviewed and recruited her, before giving her a PAID teaching position. Who was that person, and what criteria did s/he use?

I argue that the recruiter(s) most likely was(were) an insider(s) who helped her get in.

There’s more…

According to reports, she’d been teaching for 20 WHOLE years!

That means she must have had  colleagues, and bosses, to whom she reported to during that LONG period of time (??)

Are we to believe none of them noticed this serious deficiency she had in all that time?

Here’s what I think:

They knew…

But it’s likely many were no different from her. Each one had something(s) to hide.

Either that or she found a way to “bribe” them in cash or kind to keep quiet about it.

But what about the parents of the kids she must have taught?

One would imagine that one or two parents would have noticed inadequacies e.g. from checking through assignments given to the kids/talking to the kids, and even interacting with the teacher.

Yet, if we’re to believe what the reports say, in all of 20 years no parent ever complained!

Is that even possible?

I don’t know about you, but I’m tempted to believe it is…and here’s why…

Olusegun Adeniyi’s THIS DAY newspaper piece offers useful but shocking insights gained from his participation in the Nigerian Breweries Limited sponsored Competition to Choose the Best Teacher in Nigeria.

He mentioned how he, along with Prof. Pat Utomi, and other judges had to read through forms filled by contestants, which contents reflected poor reading, comprehension and writing skills on the part of many of the teachers.

Not just that, he said they learnt from interviewing the teachers that some schools were “miracle centres” where students routinely passed WAEC exams even when they knew nothing.

Using the above teacher’s story, you should be able to deduce how that is possible.

Simply put, teachers like the one Oshiomole found incapable of reading, would be the ones teaming up, often with similarly-minded parents (who probably also bought their own certificates), to cheat in the exams!

Yesterday, my 16 year old son and I visited a gentleman whose 6 month manual typewriting course he (my son) had attended at weekends back in 2011.

It turned out he’d suffered a broken ankle 3 months ago, courtesy of a hit-and-run Okada who ran into him from behind as he was walking along the street. As a result, he had been hobbling around on crutches.

We talked about that accident, and the decayed values that made the culprit fail to stop, after causing such injury to another.

Then our friend began to regale us with shocking anecdotes to illustrate just how bad things are – based on what he sees in attending to people who come to enroll for his training or to pay for typing services.

2 examples he gave held my interest:

a. A young lady who brought a computer forged copy of a well known university’s degree certificate and asked him to help her type in her name, so she could make copies to submit to a recruiting company.

He declined and tried to dissuade her. She told him off and went elsewhere to get it done. A mutual friend later told him that she got the job, as she had insiders who helped her beat the screening despite her forged papers.

b. In another incident, something similar to the above happened, but this time it was a forged NYSC certificate the individual wanted to have a name typed on!

According to our friend, his is just one of many examples that occur regularly.

No wonder we keep seeing school leavers and graduates who can’t defend their qualifications.

But here’s why/how this situation affects most of us NOT involved in these acts…without our knowing it…!

You see when such people with forged papers get into decision making positions, they will naturally feel threatened by competent others (e.g. YOU, or your kids), and block their entry into the organization.

Instead they will seek to recruit those who are like them, who will NOT come in and then turn around and call them out for being “incompetent”.

We see this already in public (and some private) sector organizations where appointment of misfits into positions, and mediocrity in work processes seems to be the order of the day.

Today, these kinds of people are often in the majority, while those not like them are the minority, and therefore an endangered species!

That’s why I argue that for every one of these crooked people that gets caught, there will often be several others hoping not to get noticed.

The following Yoruba proverb illustrates the point I’m making here.

“Eni ti won ba mu ni Ole” – Yoruba proverb

Translation: It is only the person who gets caught that is called a thief.

And I mean even right NOW, today, as I type these words!

Olusegun Adeniyi’s article based on observations from an event completed less than a month ago, confirms it. The video of the teacher who could not read went out last year – so, in all that time, not much has changed…!

If we let this continue, there may come a day when they’ll outnumber us nationally, and vote one of them as PRESIDENT. Then we’ll have to watch him/her struggle to read his/her speeches at public functions (locally and overseas) – just like that Edo state teacher did!

As an expert-who-speaks, YOU CAN use the Edo state teacher’s story to challenge yourself to improve

Apart from your speaking skills as an expert, your reading comprehension/writing skills also play a crucial role in your ability to demonstrate competence.

It’s possible the Edo state teacher was/is well spoken. If so, THAT could explain why outsiders (e.g. parents) who met her did not find her out.

They could have assumed that since she spoke well, she could also read as well. This is the same thinking those YOU relate with as an expert-who-speaks may adopt!

Question: Do you know YOUR reading speed?

If YES, what is it?

Tony Buzan in his book on Speed Reading estimates that most adults who pass through formal schooling read at about 200 to 300 words per minute on the average.

He however points out that THAT is not enough: For productive reading, at least twice that speed is needed.

Thankfully, you can google “Learn Speed Reading” to learn techniques you need (like I did to become able to read over 400wpm).

Here’s why your reading speed matters…

As an expert who is also a knowledge provider, your rate of learning affects your output.

If you’re a slow reader, that means it will take you longer to get through written material you need to read, in doing your research or reviewing client materials.

You may have to plough through large volumes of written material, in paper form, or on your PC screen.

Slow reading speed could cause you to delay others who need your feedback to progress their own jobs.

In relating with a client representative, that could put you in an embarrassing situation where the affected individual is forced to complain to his/her boss that you’re holding him/her back!

Apart from reading, your “writing”/”TYPING” skill/speed also comes into play.

What is your typing speed? Do you know?

Estimates have it that the average adult types about 40 words per minute.

I’d say aim to do at least 50 wpm and every now and then, push yourself to increase by 10 wpm till you can do up to 80 wpm or more, which I exceed when in flow (Typing Tutor software can help you with this).

If you’re slow in writing/typing it can limit your ability to function at a higher level of productivity e.g. when a client requests for a written “proposal” or some other document that you have to put together.

Unless you have no deadline to deliver to, or your workload is so low there’s enough time to take it slow, being slow in writing/tying can do you in!

Final Words: To attract, win and serve more – and higher profile – clients, demonstrating proficiency in your reading/writing skills (in addition to your speaking skills), will be key

Depending on the market you serve, and the emphasis placed on competent use of the language, higher profile clients (e.g. decision makers in corporate organizations) will expect you to possess a decent mastery (spoken and written) of the language of communication.

Apart from speed, writing proficiently (using correct grammer, spelling and tenses) also matters.

So, anything you send to a client will be read with that expectation in mind. Meeting it can dramatically boost his/her rating of you, leading to repeat business, referrals etc.

It goes without saying that no one is infallible or perfect, so one may miss the mark once in a while.

However, those should be few and far between in occurrence – if at all.

However, in light of the VERY different date preferences being expressed by intending attendees to the 6 tentative dates I sent out, it’s become obvious that getting up to the minimum of 5 persons needed to hold even one session will be difficult.

It’s not the first time this is happening.

Now read the rest of my argument/thoughts below…

Apart from article marketing which attracts buyers for my Custom Excel-VB Farm Business Support software and books, I also get paid to ghost-write for clients (I currently have 2 such projects in hand). That’s something I’m now coaching my older kids to do based on their talents and passions.

In this regard, I’m looking for role models – beyond myself – for my kids.

By this I mean AUTHENTIC achievers whose successes are not only EXPLAINABLE and VERIFIABLE, but also REPEATABLE and REPRODUCIBLE by anyone who follows guidance they (such achievers) offer.

These are successful people who readily offer information, education, ideas, tips and even coaching/training on HOW to do what they have done – and possibly do better.

The challenge in identifying role models like the above, is that so much “noise” is out here about “blogging”, “bloggers” and those “making it” amongst them – especially in the Nigerian space!!!

For the uninitiated, the “noise” can make it difficult to choose right.

Thankfully, for me, no such problem exists: I know exactly what to look for, to choose right!

In the rest of this article, I offer ideas to help interested persons accurately identify the right role models.

My (never ending) search for such role models to complement my efforts towards coaching my kids, has led me to VARIOUS places locally…and internationally, offline as well as on the web.

Regarding the international aspect, where I have since recorded the greatest successes in my searches, it’s all thanks to the Internet:

I struggled to find AUTHENTIC role models that could be reliably emulated locally. So I turned my attention to the web and voila: I found more than I’d dreamed possible!

The best part was that virtually all of those I found online had useful resources (often in form of write-ups and books) that I could have at no cost. That wonderful opportunity was one that I embraced and it helped me grow my business in various ways.

I’ve since paid tribute to some of those mentors in this article titled: Paying Tribute To 5 Experts Who Made Me and more recently in this article about Patrick Meninga, whose blogging strategy I adopted to find success: 10 Valuable Lessons I Learnt About Blogging for Passive Income, from Yaro Starak’s 60 Minute Podcast Interview with Patrick Meninga.

It is instructive to note however, that since most of my adopted role models were in foreign countries (mostly the USA, Canada etc), I was not able to directly transplant what I learned from them for use locally…

I tried to do that several times, but failed woefully each time.

Eventually, the hardships I faced as a result of my failures FORCED me to do more creative thinking in the use of what I’d learned, till I successfully developed adaptations based on a BLEND of all I’d learned, to meet my unique needs.

The above process enabled me begin to build my success to what I now enjoy today. And that experience is what’s guiding me now in the choice of role models to point my kids to!

Today, I’m giving my kids Personal Achievement Coaching to identify and choose role models whose success stories they can VERIFY. In other words, they are being taught how to identify achievers with traceable roots…and NOT overnight successes whose only testimony is what THEY say…!

I seek for my kids authentic successes through whom they can learn how to succeed with honesty and integrity. These would be potential mentors who also LIVE their lives – publicly and more importantly privately – in a manner that reflects the values they publicly claim to uphold.

In addition, I want my kids to look for role models that enjoy the HEALTHY respect and recognition of their peers or counterparts INTERNATIONALLY – evidence of which would be seen by way of MENTIONS they get in relevant high profile circles!

That is what I seek for my kids, and I’ve told them NEVER to settle for anything less.

Every day, I strive to make myself FIT the above description of role models they are to seek…

At the risk of sounding immodest, I’d say I’m not doing badly on that front, for a guy who’d had to climb back up from repeated setbacks and failure in business for YEARS while carrying the load of a wife and kids.

 

Having lived with me all their lives, during the times when I struggled to provide for them (to the point that relatives had to bail me out repeatedly), they KNOW I’ve overcome countless odds to establish my brand.

[Hint: Most people fail to realize it’s easier – MUCH easier(!) – to deal with failure, and grow your success, when you’re single/unmarried and especially if you have few or no dependents to feed or spend the income you earn on. I intend to write a book on that!]

Today, my children  are aware that I enjoy growing high profile international recognition within and outside Africa for what I do. We often talk about how I am increasingly getting opportunities to rub shoulders with some of the best known minds in my fields of professional occupation and interest.

But it’s not just recognition….

On a progressive basis, my work now earns me income in multiple currencies, without my needing to travel. Indeed over 80% of income I earn today is via passive channels for products I create(d) and sell online to buyers within and outside Africa.

I’m now preparing my kids to learn how to do – but with special focus on discovering THEIR own natural God-given talents, passions and abilities.

The objective is for them to leverage those strengths to become competent to function independently in society while still in school-age.

Why make them start earning income that early?

Because today’s world requires kids to be better prepared to meet the challenges it presents.

Fewer job opportunities are a reality more and more school leavers will face. Kids who get the kind of preparation I refer to – especially one based on identifying and emulating the right role models – will stand a much better chance of succeeding – and excelling.

For my kids, the ethos in their “coaching” program is therefore self-employment…

Seeking long term or career paid employment will simply NOT be a priority for them, and will only be considered as a temporary stepping stone to owning their own businesses.

Today, countless opportunities exist for young people to own their own businesses without giving up formal schooling. Especially when PC and Internet technology is involved.

Regarding the above, about 4 years ago, I found a wonderful young Nigerian making waves internationally as a Freelance Writer/Blogger that I told my kids is a worthy role model for them.

I actually discovered him while on a blog owned by an American Writing Coach familiar with his work. My attention was piqued when his credentials were being raved about this group of high profile freelance writing experts.

Especially because they said he was a Nigerian living in Nigeria and just 17years old but already earning over $5,000 USD monthly, serving international clients in Asia, America etc!

Today, he is 21 years old…and now owns a large catfish farm, which he personally runs with hired hands. He started it by taking a one year break from writing to learn about, and invest some of the money from his freelance writing business into owning a Catfish Farming business.

Imagine that?

Such a wise head on his young shoulders.

Robert Kiyosaki advises making your money work for you – and he stresses that Cash Flow Generating Assets (e.g. businesses) are a proven means to achieving that.

This chap learned enough to know that it was better to sink the money from his online writing business, into a lucrative offline venture like catfish farming, to boost his cash flow generation – rather than spending directly from his writing business’ earnings.

But that’s not all he’s done. Remember I said that authentic achievers always display a readiness to share what they know with others?

Well, just as he has done for years, writing educational articles for other writers to learn from, this young man is already writing articles with a similar focus, for other farm business owners and those aspiring, to learn from!

Apart from articles, he’s also creating video tutorials freely available on his Youtube channel.

See what I mean when I say he’s an authentic role model?

In case you wonder how he began, get this: He is not the only one who knows or tells his story.

I have read articles about him written by others within and outside Nigeria/Africa (some are top names in international blogging!) which provide details about how he began in his early teens – after losing his Dad, and having to drop out of school.

Google the name “Bamidele Onibalusi” and begin reading to discover the authentic success story of a Nigerian living in Nigeria’s Ibadan City, who over 5 years ago made himself a globally recognized authority in Freelance Writing and Blogging – without any money or connections of any sort.

This young man is an excellent example of the kinds of people we should encourage our kids to adopt as role models – especially towards achieving financial success using just PC and Internet Technology.

In case you missed it. Oni (as most people call him online) built his brand to what it is today, from his early teens, by working thousands of hours in those formative years, under harsh living conditions with a mother struggling to feed him and 4 other siblings.

Today he’s pursuing university education without stress  – but ONLY because he used the web to find financial success to return to school. At his age (21), I was in my 4th years, and got money for my undergraduate studies from my parents, since I had NEVER worked for a single day’s pay in my life!

 

The Yoruba’s have a saying: Ki a ro idi mo aso, tabi ki a ro aso mo idi. Ki idi sa ma pa ofo”

Literal Translation: It does not matter if you tie your bottom around your wrapper or tie your wrapper around your bottom – as long as your bottom is not exposed”

Contextual Translation: Whether you complete your formal education early on in life, or you do so a little later, what matters is that you find a way (income-wise) to get it done.

The moral: Since one needs money on a regular basis to pursue formal education in most societies, you’ll get kicked out of school anyway if you want to continue schooling but cannot pay your fees.

That’s why it sometimes makes practical sense (or circumstances could force you, like the passing away of Oni’s rich dad did) to take a break from school to develop the needed income earning competence to enable you meet the requirements for completing any formal schooling you want.

The above is why I advocate that Personal Achievement Education is a better way to go compared to conventional/formal education.

But briefly, Personal Achievement Education (PAE) is what Oni literally empowered himself with. And countless others who rose from grass to grace did the same thing in different parts of the world, to achieve their successes.

PAE is superior because it incorporates Academic Education while exposing learners to information, ideas, opportunities, and experiences designed to enable them identify and develop their real world relevant income-earning talents/abilities/passions to support themselves through life.

PAE is what I’m giving my kids now, and like I’ve told those who’ve raised issues with my approach, especially relatives, the results they get will demonstrate to MANY parents that it’s the BEST way to go, in this 21st century and beyond.

A WORD  OF ADVICE: No matter how old you think you are, or how much you think you know about Freelance Writing or Blogging, stay open to LEARNING from others…even if they are DECADES younger than you are!!

In my case, within days of discovering Oni’s YoungPrePro.com (now www.writersincharge.com) a few years back, I wasted no time in subscribing to his newsletter (using an email forwarder I setup via my tksola dot com domain to my GMAIL box for my first son), so as to see possible learnings I could pick up, to boost my efforts to win freelance writing clients, and also to coach my kids.

By way of interest, I knew I was 20 years older than him, but my attitude to life has always been to learn from even a 1 year old…if it helps me. Many Africans struggle to scale this mental hurdle and it hurts them!

Accepting to learn from a younger person does not mean you’re inferior to him/her. It simply means you have enough self-esteem to NOT feel inadequate acknowledging that others may know things in certain areas, that you need to learn!

I soon began sharing Oni’s emails with my first son (who had not long before that time just completed a 6 month weekend practical manual typewriting course).

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I was unsuccessful in using most of the ideas I got from reading Oni’s blog to get hired to write.

Try as I could, I was unable to get even one Guest Posting opportunity (maybe I did not try hard/long enough)…

But I knew that was not Oni’s fault. I knew it was not that Oni’s tips were not useful.

Instead, my analytical thinking helped me discern what the likely problem was…

My primary target market (farm business) and audience (farm CEOs), coupled with my multidisciplinary profile makes me a fairly unusual case…and that’s why a more flexible approach to blogging (like the one I learnt by studying Patrick Meninga’s model) was eventually what helped me achieve my goals in blogging.

In line with Patrick’s advice, I focused on writing on this blog DAILY, and to use multiple content syndication tools to propagate it to as many channels as possible, to boost my marketing reach and impact.

That strategy has since worked perfectly for me – leading to more sales leads (for my custom f software, information products and ghost-writing services) being generated via Google’s results pages and other channels.

For instance, I currently have 2 Ghost-writing projects in hand (one for a UK based client, and the other for an Abuja based Farm CEO client) – both came from clients I have NEVER met in the flesh.

And that’s apart from passive income I regularly earn from sales of my products – to online buyers..

No matter how you look at it, even if it did not get me hired in the conventional way, my exposure to Oni’s work at least indirectly benefited me…and I know a lot more about blogging as a result…!

As you can imagine, I’m determined to make sure my kids learn from him as well.

Sadly, so many older persons in this part of the world let their egos and concerns about being “older” than another person (e.g they’ll think and even say “s/he is a small boy or girl”) stop them from learning from – or at least being positively influenced by – those who can help them…

My advice: If you want to get ahead in life, DROP that retrogressive mind set, or you’ll have yourself to blame!

The Missing Element Needed to Equip More School Leavers/Graduates to Excel In Life

If you are a parent to school age kids, mark my words:

You need to get yourself firmly into the driving seat in terms of “educating” them.

Exposure to formal academics, especially via conventional schooling is only one part of what is required to equip young people for the real world.

There is another important but often ignored factor.

To illustrate what I mean, have you ever stopped to ask yourself what happened to the classmates of geniuses like Einstein, Achebe, Soyinka, Chimamanda Adichie etc?

How many of them are famous for being exceptional today?

Few if at all any.

The difference is in an intangible non-academic element identified by Edison in his quote above: “imagination and creativity.”

But money cannot be used to buy it. You have to DEVELOP that aspect of yourself. For your kids, you have to support them to develop it too.

Their teachers will rarely be able – talk less willing – to do it.

That’s why it’s up to you to make it happen, if you want your child’s true genius to be unleashed so her full God given potential can be actualized.

The following quote by Einstein provides a fitting end to this write-up by further underscoring the points made here:

I recommend you take a cue from Einstein.
