No. 215: Don’t Be So “Nice” That You Appear Incompetent (Hint: Sometimes It Pays to be Initially “Difficult” So as to be Successful Later)

When it comes to DELIVERING desired results, LOWERING YOUR STANDARDS (or COMPROMISING) in order to avoid being called “difficult” by clients (or representatives) unwilling to honour their end of the bargain, can end up making you look incompetent.

In this write-up I explain why doing the above to please others is never worth it, IF you want authentic and lasting success.

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – No.

Some people always want to cut corners, or give too little, if possible nothing, to get ALL they want!

In today’s NIGERIA, a person can easily get labelled wicked if s/he REFUSES to allow or tolerate wrong behaviour from those who report to him/her or who s/he has to LEAD.

The problem is widespread, and begins right from the schooling system, from primary to tertiary level.

For instance, today the following can earn a teacher/lecturer the label of “WICKED”:

1. Insisting students meet minimum required attendance, or get penalized.

2. Insisting students score required passing grade for a credit course, or repeat/carry over.

3. Refusing to entertain “pleas” that a student whose performance falls below cut-off level be allowed to advance to the next class.

Like I said, it’s everywhere…even on the Nigerian roads, the traffic offender thinks the same way. S/he will plead in the same manner after DELIBERATELY jumping the lights and getting caught.

They always believe they can plead (and if necessary BUY) their way out of any trouble. Quite often they also find enforcers willing to let them do just that.

In Nigeria, when people “BEG” you to bend the rules for them and you agree, they say “God Bless You”. When you refuse, they call you “WICKED”!

I argue that it becomes impossible to ensure the required high standards are met, and the DESIRED RESULTS achieved when we fail to enforce rules put in place to make that happen!

For instance, how do we turn out competent medical surgeons if we let those who fail tests designed to test “competence” to advance to the next class…because we don’t want to be WICKED, or we want to HELP?

The truth is that there are times when the best way to HELP people will be to make them pay the price for their wrong doing.

We need to challenge people to put in the needed effort to QUALIFY to move to the next level in pursuit of a reward they want.

The reason Nigeria has become home to “mass mediocrity” is because too many people are UNWILLING to EARN merit-based access to rewards they seek…AND too many people in decision making positions are WILLING to BEND the rules to let such people have their way.

We see the result in the pitiful state of our sports today, compared to our rich past!

Save for some individuals who are excelling in their fields using raw talent and drive (e.g. Table Tennis), our Sportsmen and Women today give us little or no reason to cheer.

Many people are getting picked to represent us through corner-cutting, and it’s preventing the BEST talents that we really have from getting to represent us.

It’s the same problem in other areas.

Merit gets second place most times in decision making when it matters most.

Until we change this harmful and shameful culture, Nigeria will continue to crawl in fields of endeavour where she should be SOARING high above other nations, in the skies of achievement.

I’ve been called DIFFICULT, UN-REASONABLE, RIGID (or even WICKED!) quite a bit in Nigeria…and I have NO PROBLEMS with it!

That’s because I do NOT tolerate mediocrity in any guise or form, and I constantly demand EVERYONE around me to pull their weight, and earn the right to access rewards they seek.

My kids will tell you this is true – and like I’ve told their grandparents, the results WILL be obvious in the abilities they manifest for the world to see in the VERY near future.

In the meantime, if YOU are a parent, I urge you to entrench a similar culture in your home, so your kids get the best preparing to excel in the real world.

They will arrive adulthood with the right mental attitude and discipline to make the most of opportunities that come their way!

Question: How do you serve clients successfully?

Answer: By delivering the results YOU promised them and which they agreed to pay YOU for.

It’s VERY unlikely that you can successfully serve clients by being NICE to them, while failing to do the above i.e. delivering what you promised!

This is why it’s crucially important that you avoid making the dangerous mistake of LOWERING your standards to please any client.

Let me explain using a personal example:

In developing and implementing Web Marketing Systems (WMS) for clients, I sometimes get asked to meet with and/or give a talk to decision makers (who pay to have that happen) on what I am to do for them.

During such interactions I spell out what I will do for them, as well as what they need to do on their own part, to meet me halfway, so that the solution works as expected.

But I don’t just stop at telling them…

When work starts, if/when I identify that a client is going off track in terms of delivering what s/he has agreed to enable me progress the work (e.g. sending me a profile, or articles to use in creating new content), I firmly, but politely remind him/her noting problems likely to occur.

Trying too hard to be “nice” with a client (or representative) failing to give you what you need to do YOUR work, can end up making YOU look bad at the end of the day.

How?

Myriad possibilities exist.

For instance, in order to be “nice”, you may say nothing about the delays to those who need to know. The problem is that the culprit could later turn around – when eye brows are raised, and say YOU did not ask/remind him/her – effectively blaming you!

So don’t take the business of being nice too far: You must think and act like a true professional at all times – IF you want the client to respect you.

Learn to assert yourself to get your work done.

No one is going to give you a pat of the back for failing to deliver. Remember that you’re getting paid!

If the decision maker has given you the go ahead, and some person(s) assigned to work with you are delaying things, find a way to set them right before they make you look bad.

If they fail to change despite your best efforts, get the relevant decision maker involved.

THAT could get you labelled “WICKED” by any naughty mediocre minds involved. However, my experiences indicate that such a situation will only be temporary.

You see, taking such decisive action WILL often enable you deliver a solution works, just like you promised. When that happens, you’ll look good to decision makers WHO TRULY MATTER!

All others will simply fall in line and join in applauding you from them on!

Take it from me. I’ve been there countless times in paid as well as self-employment…

…as a shift manager leading over scores of men to achieve daily targets on bottling lines; as a shift brewer leading a dozen operatives to meet daily brewing targets; as Technical Training and Development Manager leading a team of Training Instructors and Engineering Trainees to serve the brewery with custom training, and also as Acting Production Manager, leading others (some 15 years my senior in the company) to achieve target brewing outputs.

Since becoming an entrepreneur over a decade ago, I’ve also been “there” countless times at an even more demanding level…

…as a multi-skilled Performance Improvement Specialist working – in person and online – with clients within and outside Africa, to deliver promised results.

Sometimes it’s not deliberate on the part of the client or representative. They tend to get so busy with their own business tasks that they “forget” or “de-prioritize” what they agreed to do for you.

But the problem created for you WILL always remain the same!

That’s why you need to call their attention, if/when they inadvertently fail to meet you halfway as agreed.

If you do not do so in a timely manner, you will be setting yourself up to look bad.

You have been warned!

Question: But who is Burt Dubin, and why do I (Tayo K. Solagbade) think you should you learn from

him?

Answer: Burt is a 3 decade veteran in the professional speaking business. After achieving top level cross continental success as an

expert-speaker, he has established a reputation for mentoring some of the highest paid speakers in the world. He owns SpeakingBizSuccess.com, SpeakingSuccess.com and BurtDubin.com.

Burt helps those he mentors (experts-who-speak) to Position, Package, Promote, and Present* themselves successfully to clients (*He calls

them the 4Ps). That’s why it’s no surprise that on Burt’s website, considerable space capital is devoted to useful business marketing articles as well as products.

It might also interest you to know that MANY years back, Burt established himself as one of the best marketing minds in the world. To really put this FACT in

proper perspective, I’ll provide more specific details in form of an example.

A few years ago, Burt contributed an article to a powerful publication titled “The Most Effective Articles Ever – By The World’s Top Marketers“. That 574 page ebook features timeless marketing advice from 71 of the world’s top marketers – including Jack

Trout, Joe Vitale, Yanik Silver…and Burt Dubin.

That’s ample proof that (in addition to Public Speaking), Burt would be a great resource to learn business marketing from!

Full Disclosure: I represent Burt as Sole Agent for his products/services, which means if YOU buy from him, I get paid.

But that’s NOT the main reason I represent and recommend him. I have benefited in many ways by learning from Burt. Through his writing, his audio recordings,

and from directly relating with him.

Before we teamed up in 2011, I’d been studying his work and adapting it to succeed in my work from way back in 2002. It does not matter what part of the world

you’re in. If you know how to adapt them to suit your peculiar local needs, Burt’s ideas and strategies WILL work for you. I am living proof of it!

That’s why I never tire of CONFIDENTLY recommending him to others.

If you need help putting the ideas shared above to use, let me know HERE.

Making Nigeria Work Again: We ALL Need to Beat The Nigerian Factor (BTNF) ™

“The Nigerian factor is what makes things that work elsewhere fail to work in Nigeria. It is also what makes doing the wrong thing acceptable, and doing the right thing condemnable” – Tayo Solagbade

Below is a screenshot of the home page of my – now defunct – Beat The Nigerian Factor (BTNF) ™ mini site, which I ran on a sub domain of my former, 9 year old website – www.spontaneousdevelopment.com.

btnf-home

I’m posting it along with excerpts from the home page featuring a definition I coined for the social anomaly called the Nigerian Factor – because this problem persists today, and remains a MAJOR hindrance to Nigeria’s progress on various fronts.

==Starts===

Nigeria has wonderful talents that can add great value to the world. But she needs to give those talents a conducive environment to flourish. Tayo Solagbade’s definition of the Nigerian Factor indicates how the Nigerian Factor stifles Nigeria’s ability to do the foregoing :

“The Nigerian factor is what makes things that work elsewhere fail to work in Nigeria. It is also what makes doing the wrong thing acceptable, and doing the right thing condemnable” – Tayo Solagbade

SDAc believes that anyone who truly loves Nigeria will want her to develop to the point where many individual Nigerians will no longer feel a need to flee for Europe and America,( these days even Ghana/Togo!) in order to achieve worthwhile goals.

Perpetuation of the Nigerian Factor currently (Jan 2006) makes this development process difficult, if not impossible.

a. BTNF Objective

The objective of this mini site is to provide education for re-orientation towards eliminating the Nigerian Factor. This is being done as a social development service.

Why? Because we believe every business organisation will find her chances of survival and profitable existence threatened if negative influences that prevent stabilisation of political and economic conditions persist.

We also believe we have a responsibility to contribute positively to the development of any environment in which we operate. Not all of us can get invited to high profile meetings with important dignitaries to discuss matters of national importance/security. :-)

Click here to learn about our adopted strategy, and how you can join us.

b. How Bad Is This Problem?

Our special report – “The Nigerian Factor UNMASKED!” – was originally written in June 2005. However events in the last quarter of 2005 – especially the unprecedented series of fatal aircraft crashes has revealed other areas where the problem has eroded any security persons in this country (Nigerians or foreigners) may be confident they have.

At the special emergency meeting of stakeholders called by President Obasanjo(and broadcast on TV), one of the delegates provided revealing insight into the issue of age, and airworthiness of planes bought and used Nigerian airline operators.

According to him, sometimes officers of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA) who travelled abroad to inspect planes to be bought by an airline operator, would have their estacode, flight tickets, accommodation fees paid by the airline operator(who wished to purchase the plane to be given a pass or fail mark by the NCAA officer!) – in addition to being provided a shopping allowance. How can one then expect the NCAA officer to objectively carry out the assigned job?!

The above more that anything else confirmed the President’s insistence on corruption as the root cause was not wrong. All this however only came to the fore AFTER multiple crashes claiming hundreds of lives within a few weeks (including those of 50 very young students on their way back to School) had occurred.

c. Individuals Are Also Guilty!

The irony is that those responsible for cutting corners in vetting/ buying the planes and who circumvent established routine aircraft maintenance regimes for personal monetary gain are NOT all in government. Some are individuals in society who think it is smart to exploit the existing loopholes.

Maybe that is why many Nigerians seem incapable of insisting that things be done as expected. They can ask for a while, but they soon give up and accept anything they are told hoping that the problem will resolve itself.

The SDAc believes that this LACK OF POLITICAL WILL(note that political will need not be demonstrated through violence) is what makes Nigerians continue to suffer the hardships they complain so much about. The following quote reinforces this:

“Find out just what any people will quietly submit to, and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them” – Frederick Douglas

===Ends==

The Nigerian Factor™ was behind what manifested as the Econet Wireless saga that Strive Masiyawa is currently writing a series on via his Facebook page and website.

And it was behind the shameful revelations that Olusegun Adeniyi highlighted in his THISDAY newspaper article titled “An adventure to discover the best teacher in Nigeria. Drama Galore…lol!” – about the rotten state of our educational system.

Simply put, the Nigerian Factor™ is the reason why Nigeria has failed to work for decades, compared to small neighbouring countries with only a fraction of its capacity or potential.

But there’s hope…especially with the new leadership Nigeria now has…

Especially when it is considered in conjunction with the vibrant and growing population of civil society crusaders who are using PC and Internet technology in creative ways to elicit more responsible behaviour from key actors in society.

Never has the time to do this been more relevant than now. A wind of change is really blowing across the Nigerian landscape.

Those of us who were mocked for trying to fight the  Nigerian Factor™, but who refused to be discouraged, are now the ones leading the way to show others how to do it.

Even though the material from the BTNF mini site was published way back in 2006 (over 9 years ago), it still remains VERY relevant to today’s Nigeria.

That’s why I’ve decided to deliberately republish relevant excerpts from the Beat The Nigerian Factor (BTNF) ™ mini site, on my SD Nuggets blog, to provide badly needed information and education for reorientation of those who will be on the look out for it.

Those who were misled into thinking there was no other way to do things, are now coming to the realization that it can no longer be business as usual – and they are searching for viable alternatives.

Guess what? This website – www.tayosolagbade.com offers information and education about several viable alternatives to the Nigerian Factor™.

If you’d like to know what those viable alternatives are, and how you can use them to achieve the progress you desire, no matter the obstacles you face, explore the articles on this blog – especially those in the “My Ideas for Making Nigeria Better” category.

Want to learn more, or discuss possibilities for making Nigeria better, click here to send me a message

[RECOMMENDED READING] An adventure to discover the best teacher in Nigeria. Drama Galore…lol!

I never re-publish other people’s writings on my blog, but I do link to those I find compelling. This piece by Olusegun Adeniyi titled “An adventure to discover the best teacher in Nigeria. Drama Galore…lol!” – published in THISDAY Newspaper perfectly fits that description: it is a truly compelling, and at the same time “painful” read, that confirms the serious ROT Nigeria’s educational system in in!

Learn Unique Performance Improvement Strategies for Achieving Sustainable High-Profit Farm Business Success with Peace of Mind

Week ONE (1)

Introduction

Except yours is an NGO or not-for-profit entity, your purpose for becoming a Farm Business Owner (or Farm CEO) is ultimately to make money and do so profitably.

Achieving that goal does NOT however start and end with being technically competent in the specific venture (e.g. poultry, fishery, piggery etc) you may settle upon.

This is the mistake too many people make in starting up their farm (and other) businesses.

Knowing how to do what is involved (e.g. planting/nursing/harvesting or breeding/feeding/slaughtering) is just one of several key requirements for success.

There is a lot more you MUST know, and do COMPETENTLY to achieve adequate and sustainable results to make your investment of time, effort and money worthwhile.

I help Farm CEOs identify and develop those other aspects they may be lacking in, which are often critically important for succeeding in farm business.

This e-course discusses 6 strategies ignored by most farm owners, which used together (and correctly), can boost farm business performance, at low to zero cost!

At the end of this course, you will know why you need to pay them the serious attention they deserve, if you want long term, high-profit farm business success with PEACE of MIND.

No. 213: To Achieve SIGNIFICANCE in Success, YOU Need to Resist Corruption! [Feature: Strive Masiyawa’s 5 Part Anti-Corruption Series on Econet Wireless in Nigeria]

Earlier today, Strive Masiyawa posted the first of 5 stories (view here) in his promised series on CORRUPTION regarding his experiences launching Econet Wireless in Nigeria.

The revelations are shocking, yet instructive.

As an expert in your field, if you desire SIGNIFICANCE in success, YOU MUST resist corruption, like Masiyawa has done for decades.

But you don’t need to be rich like him to do it, and still progress in life. I explain based on unique successes I’ve achieved by THINKING up a way around it!

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – To Achieve SIGNIFICANCE in Success, YOU Need to Resist Corruption!

Strive Masiyawa (Founder of Econet Wireless Telecom company) is the FIRST authentically successful African business owner I am consciously aware of, who has OPENLY narrated specific instances in which he has encountered and had to fight corruption.

Most others simply skirt around the subject – or refuse to comment on it at all. They pretend it’s not there, while sometimes either participating in it, or benefiting in one way or another from it.

Yet many such people want you to listen to and accept the advice they give you about succeeding in running your own business in Africa, like they claim to have done.

But they refuse to offer you valuable information and education, to DEAL successfully with CORRUPTION – which most times constitutes the BIGGEST obstacle to success that any entrepreneur has to face, especially in Africa.

I find that to be hypocrisy of the worst kind. And it annoys me that such business persons are in the majority in these parts. I KNOW MANY – some were once clients. Others are relatives.

I say this as one who has shared countless true stories of the stifling effects of corruption on my efforts to breakthrough, for years, as an entrepreneur.

It took taking the drastic steps of focusing on 80 to 100% online income generation and relocating to another country, to get the freedom I needed to begin to flourish.

As Masiyawa’s narratives indicate, corruption is EVERYWHERE.

However, in Africa it’s largely uncontrolled…and in Nigeria, it has simply gone viral!

Consequently, when you are starting up, and what you do requires interacting with others in the African environment – especially face to face – CORRUPTION is a reality you must deal with.

The problem – as many questions posted by young Africans on Masiyawa’s page indicate – is that most people start-up unprepared for the discovery of just how bad it is.

By the time they find out, they are already committed to doing business, and probably in dire straits financially, so that they feel too weak to resist the suggestion that they cut corners.

Masiyawa’s message is that there is a SPIRITUAL dimension to dealing with this problem, which can help ANYONE faced with the dilemma of deciding whether or not to engage in corruption.

I’ve been saying the same thing in many of my past articles in which I’ve shared my own very painful encounters with corruption (at my SMALL level compared to Masiyawa).

I found myself enduring prolonged periods of humiliation unable to fulfil my obligation as a husband and father. All because I would not bend.

My business remained stunted because my attitude towards corrupt advances meant I had LIMITED – very limited – opportunities I could reasonably pursue to earn income, especially via offline channels.

My stubbornness cost me so much. It strained my marriage relationship to breaking point, and caused conflicts with some clients, friends and close relatives who felt I was trying to do the impossible by fighting the system.

But I remained firm in my faith that I could advance without giving in to corruption in any form.

You will need uncommon courage and wisdom, to overcome every encounter you have with corruption

ONLY absolute faith in your Creator and  a willingness to persist perpetually in working hard to find creative ways to progress in spite of CORRUPTION induced adversity, will enable you succeed.

Read below, a comment (click here to view it on Facebook) that I shared on Masiyawa’s page as my contribution on 1st October 2015…

It offers insights into the mindset you can adopt in dealing with corruption, even if you lack resources like those used by the Zimbabwean billionaire to fight back (click here to read the post I responded to):

a comment I shared on Masiyawa’s page as my contribution on 1st October 2015 : It offers insights into the mindset you can adopt in dealing with corruption, even if you lack resources like those used by the Zimbabwean billionaire to fight back

Regarding what I said above, about moving to another country, it was Benin Republic.

As I’ve said in past articles, I did NOT go there to look for clients or business. No.

Instead I did so to access steady power supply and a saner environment, devoid of annoyances to achieve my goal of building my brand online so that I would no longer need to meet prospects face to face to sell my products and services.

For over 2 years, from late 2010 till early 2013 I had tried to do just that while still based in Nigeria.

But VERY poor power supply and consequent hefty DAILY expense on generator fuelling and maintenance, on top of high living costs made it impossible for me to invest the quality of effort and volume of time I needed to do anything tangible.

In contrast, between 1st April 2013 when I arrived in Cotonou and the end of the year, I was able to work most days virtually round the clock, to the point that my web marketing began generating powerful sales leads, 50 to 60% of which I was able to convert to sales.

Guess what? Over 80% of those sales were to Nigerians living in Nigeria, who sent payment via my bank account.

The icing on the cake was that I ended that year on a high by getting paid by an International NGO to write an Agribusiness case study paper based on one of the products I sell to Farm CEOs within and outside Africa: the Excel-VB Ration Formulator.

To this day (indeed this morning!) I continue to record such online sales that afford me the peace of mind and convenience that I NEVER enjoyed when I had yet to put in place the Web Marketing System I setup on relocating to Benin.

Now that my 24-7 leads generation system is in place, I am able to earn income regardless of where I am. I do NOT need to meet anyone face to face.

That means LESS contact with corrupt individuals – at least as far as doing what I do for a living goes. In other areas, where and when I do encounter them, I resist them as is my habit.

In case you wonder, the core of a Web Marketing System that makes it generate sales leads via search engines and other online platforms for you, is YOUR CREATION OF USEFUL INFORMATION AND EDUCATION in as many formats as possible, for consumption by people that fit your target audience profile.

Creating such content requires LOTS of thinking, with a focus on problem solving for those you wish to sell to.

I could not do that with any degree of consistency back then in Nigeria: It cost too much money and effort. When I got to Benin, I was able to work online from 8a.m round the clock till close to midnight, even beyond, where some café’s permitted it. I only took breaks to rest while eating.

That was a brutal period!

I pushed myself to the limits, adding more web marketing content to my online presence until it reached “critical mass” and began to produce repeat leads.

Today, I continue creating new content almost DAILY, but it now takes me MUCH less effort than it used to, because I have gotten so proficient at it that I do it almost without conscious effort i.e. spontaneously.

The point I’m making by sharing the above details is that since I lacked the resources Strive Masiyawa had, I had to THINK up a different way of doing what I wanted to do, that would make it UNNECESSARY for me to accept the corrupt ways of others!

It was not easy, and it did not happen overnight…

BUT I succeeded eventually, and today, I am better off as a result.

No one can dictate to me, or demand that I give him/her any form of gratification to get paid for what I sell. I would simply laugh in his/her face.

The way I have positioned myself makes it IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to do that to me.

It’s either you see what I offer via my Web Marketing System, and decide you want it badly enough to send payment, or you move on.

I won’t even know you were there unless you send me an email or call my number.

And if you do either, the system I employ in responding to enquirers will QUICKLY make it obvious there is no room in my space for nonsense of that kind.

A Point to Note: Today when I say I sell my custom Excel-VB software and physical books online, as an African living in Africa, people readily accept it because they SEE evidence of it…BUT I did not enjoy such acceptance at the start!!

You see, when I began trying to earn income without going out anymore, using the web as my main marketing platform, to sell what I used to sell offline, virtually EVERYONE I told, or who knew about it told me it could not work.

Their argument was that Nigeria/Africa was NOT ready for it.

And they often said it with relentless emphasis!

The same people now see me doing it daily, and succeeding MORE than I ever did when I drove my battered car around all over Lagos, visiting prospective clients for possible projects!

Hopefully, that tells you something about the wisdom of taking too much advice, when you’re trying to break new boundaries.

What you can see, most people will likely be unable to see!

Final Words: To free yourself from the annoyance of corruption and those who engage in it, you MUST invest quality time to THINK UP a solution for yourself like I did.

It does not matter what you do, so long as you have FAITH in the Creator, you can always find a way around corruption.

He will guide you to discover what will work for you, like He did for me.

In fact, forget about me: He will do it for YOU, like He did it for Dr. Strive Masiyawa!

As parents, our primary role is to COACH (and not just verbally lecture) our kids, to prepare them to be competent, financially independent adults in life. To succeed in playing that role, we must do what a professional coach in any other area of life would do.

Simply put, we must create an environment, physically, emotionally and intellectually that enables them learn all they need to succeed in adulthood.

The above implies the need for BALANCE in the education we give them.

Sadly, too many parents leave their kids to get a one-sided preparation for life…

This happens because they focus their efforts on giving them mainly – or ONLY – formal schooling.

Very little in terms of character forming and vocational skills building education is provided. The result is what we see a lot in today’s society.

Young products from schools across the three tiers of education unable to demonstrate real-world relevant awareness, and competence outside what their certificates say they studied.

In fact, today some young people even go around with certificates they cannot demonstrate academic competence to defend.

The way I see it, parents who want their kids to fare better than that CANNOT just throw money at their kids’ education. Formal schooling, no matter how advanced or expensive, is simply NOT enough to give children what is needed to succeed as adults in today’s fast changing world.

You must be in the driving seat of your child’s education as the NUMBER ONE COACH – and NOT his/her teacher(s)!

The mental attitude you adopt must be that of a professional coach who has a sound understanding of what his/her coachee (your child) is going to face in the real world.

You must be a coach who uses his/her insights about life to create learning experiences that prepare YOUR CHILD for life away from YOU!

That’s what I’m doing for my kids…

Incidentally, I’ve done it for other people’s kids BEFORE I had mine – so I’m really PUMPED up about THIS run!!

As part of their homeschooling, they watch specially selected educational videos on various subjects they need to master academically, as well as vocationally.

Then they are challenged to go out into the real world to put as much as possible of what they learn to use, as the opportunities present themselves.

To stimulate their minds, I subtly “put ideas into their heads”, about how they can make use of what they learn.

Then I wait to see what happens…and they rarely disappoint.

Kids are amazing: Once you succeed in winning their interest, getting them to learn becomes so easy.

Basically, what excites them is when you teach them something they can immediately try their hands on in real life.

They love DOING – especially where they are allowed to apply their creativity without restriction. That’s the environment I have created for my kids and it’s yielding fruits (no pun intended).

What you see in photos below are other trial crops the boys planted…

It all began when I told them the garden space in the compound could be used to raise vegetables we could eat (i.e. putting ideas in their heads)

One day they got some bad tomato fruits their mother disposed, and asked me if the seeds would sprout. I told them it was likely, so they planted and began watering and tending them with great seriousness.

Later on they got seeds and stems from other crops and planted them.

Over time I noticed a dense layer of Water Leaf vegetables and told them to pluck some for making vegetable stew. I pointed out the fact that the quantities we harvested were equivalent to those sold for N50 in the market: which meant we were saving money.

I noted in passing that they could plough back into the soil, stems left behind after the leaves were plucked, to replenish the nutrients to helping the plant grow new leaves.

They began doing that immediately: Like I said, kids are eager learners, and doers, once their interest is triggered!

It might interest you to know that they actually planted and harvested a yam tuber (small though – but they cooked and ate  it) in that narrow stretch of soil in our compound.

One day I came home and the 12 year old showed me a maize cob, he’d harvested. It was not well developed, but the boy was still excited that he’d grown maize and gotten the cob without spending money.

Later on they told me the tomatoes were producing fruits. I was surprised, not having been aware they’d planted tomatoes.

Seeing signs suggestive of the presence of disease causing microbes on some leaf edges, I told them to get charcoal ash and spread generously over the leaves of the plants. They asked me why, and I explained that ash has anti-microbial characteristics which help to stop onset of common diseases on the plant.

As the weeks passed we watched the fruits grow bigger. Just a few days ago, we were discussing how they were gradually turning red.

Yesterday I came home and saw that they’d plucked some ripe, fully red tomatoes, which their mum was planning to use for a meal. The other plants – as shown in the photos on this page – still have a decent number of fruits yet to ripen.

I asked the kids if they knew how much those plucked tomatoes would go for in the market. Not surprisingly (because I’d asked then similar question in the past), they’d already asked around, and had been told they would cost about N200 ($1 USD) or more.

The looks on their faces told me they knew what I was thinking.

Having a backyard garden can help many homes cut down costs on purchase of certain items used regularly. The small amounts spent to buy them really adds up over one week to a month.

Yet it just takes making a little effort to setup the needed space and taking a little time, every now and then to nurture the plants/crops.

If one wants, even mini-livestock like poultry, rabbits, fish could also be kept in a small backyard area.

Sadly, many homes today spend too much on simple food items they can easily grow themselves – especially in Nigeria, where most foods are so expensive!

Many such homes have kids who do not have a clue how foods they eat come about e.g How they are grown, processed, stored or even cooked.

Long ago, I resolved that my male and female kids would be coached to know, and be able to do all that.

The 2 oldest go to the market to buy foodstuff and prepare meals for their siblings(thanks to their mother’s coaching).

We as parents don’t need to be there to make this happen.

They’ve also learnt to plant crops and make their own drinks/cake products using fruit peels – which they’ve been able to package, sell, and also give out as gifts. We’ll be doing a lot more of this when we get to Benin Republic.

This varied mix of real-world relevant experiences, combined with formal schooling, gives kids a truly balanced education.

In essence, I’m saying it’s great that your kids already attend school. But that’s not all they need.

Coaching them to plant some of their own food, or even run their own micro-farm business (e.g rearing/breeding rabbits for sale, along with growing useful crops like Tomatoes etc), can equip them to live and eat well, at a lower cost – by making the best use of space in their homes.

They would thus spend less to buy food (and possibly sell some of what they grow) – boosting their chances of KEEPING more of the money they earn, to build real, lasting wealth: unlike others who, not knowing how(despite attending school), will have to ALWAYS buy all they eat!

Your Child Needs Strength of Character to Successfully Resist Corruption

No matter how intelligent/well schooled, creative, competent, well spoken and nice a person may be, if s/he does not have strength of character, all those aforementioned qualities s/he possesses will not matter.

Why?

Because it takes having upright morals/values and strength of character to navigate the good and bad, as well as right and wrong in the real world. And how well you do that ultimately determines how authentically successful you become in life.

But no one is born with strength of character, or the right conception of morals and values.

It’s society that teaches each of us what they are. Right from childhood in our parents’ homes through school, till we arrive adulthood in larger society.

As a child I spent my early years (10 to 16) getting into – often spectacular! – trouble (causing my parents major embarrassment) because despite being given the right exposure at home, I repeatedly let peer pressure and influence push me to act contrary to what I’d been taught about doing right and wrong.

Luckily for me, the Nigerian society back then still practiced what I like to call “Societal Parenting” – in which a child that misbehaves away from home gets promptly corrected by other adults/parents/strangers.

They then report his/her misconduct to his/her parents who go on to reinforce the corrective feedback to the child.

I share 5 such true stories from my childhood, in my Best Practice Parenting book titled (Kukuru Danger).

The book is dedicated to all those uncompromising adults and parents who diligently pulled me back in line each time I derailed while I was away from my parents.

Without their efforts, I doubt I would ever have gotten the awakening that has since led me to reform myself into an uncompromising stickler for doing right at all times, no matter how hard it may be.

Doing the above requires a clear sense of right and wrong.

The moral upbringing given me by my parents and the larger society helped cement my character, which in adulthood now equips me to do right when it matters, regardless of the circumstances I may find myself.

For instance, my ability to overcome years of prolonged heartbreaking struggles as a start-up entrepreneur unwilling to do crooked business in a society where that prevailed, is due to that foundation of sound character that I established in my formative years.

Today I enjoy authentic non-corner cutting success providing my unique range of unconventional Excel-Visual Basic software (like my popular Ration Formulator and Poultry Farm Manager apps), Information Products (like the Feed Formulation Handbook), and services to a global paying audience.

To get where I am now however, I had to fight many attempts to make me compromise and do crooked business – especially during those years that I still focused my efforts exclusively on selling offline.

As a result, I suffered severely prolonged lack of money and humiliation as a result, to the extent that I could not fulfill my obligations to my wife and kids.

I’ve shared true stories in past articles about this, and how my siblings and parents had to bail me out time and time again.

If you’ve read some of them, you’ll know that I described myself as being the “Bambiala” (aka beggar) of my family during that phase.

I also noted how some friends and relatives repeatedly told me I could not make useful progress if I insisted on NOT doing things like over-invoicing to get assigned projects by decision makers in some (not all) companies. But I refused and kept looking for alternatives.

Eventually, through a process of trial and error in using the web, coupled with creative thinking in showcasing solutions I offered offline to an online audience of pre-qualified prospects, I’ve gradually built a passive income generating system that continues to evolve today(which I now teach others about)!

Using it has helped me limit exposure of myself to the offline annoyances I faced in the past, and I am better able to reap rewards for the work I do, without needing to compromise on my morals or values.

All this courtesy of the positive character moulding impact of Societal Parenting on me, from my childhood.

Sadly however, things have seriously deteriorated – on the Societal Parenting front, since I had my childhood experiences.

It’s so bad now that adults and parents today often openly engage in teaching kids to do wrong e.g. to tell lies, bear false witness, deceive, scheme, and to be lazy or detest hard honest work for reward etc.

And it shows in what we see daily around us.

Youths who prefer to cheat to pass exams (actively aided by parents in collaboration with invigilators), who enjoy living on the wrong side of the law doing email fraud. Young female students who engage in sex for money or marks, and male counterparts who become campus cult members and inflict bodily harm on peers or even kill them when they disagree.

That’s to mention just a few!

Simply put, today’s Nigeria is brimming with human beings the larger majority of whom have seriously warped morals and values. This distorts or clouds their view of what constitutes right and wrong, effectively making them unreliable where decision making to uphold the law in words or action is required.

Now, apart from the nuisance they cause, the presence of this majority also poses a danger of corrupting influence on the impressionable minds of kids.

Not just their own kids, but more importantly the kids of the minority who still uphold the right morals/values and who teach their kids to do the same.

I happen to belong to that minority, and my concern about the above makes me limit my kids’ interaction with their peers in the Nigerian society. To do this I have taken certain drastic steps that’s gotten close relatives worried that I’m being too extreme.

But engaging the kids in discussion about societal happenings has revealed very clearly that my concerns are NOT unfounded.

Let me share one true story to illustrate what I mean…

I recently asked my 16 year old son if he knew about special centers where exam mal-practices were openly carried out in the country.

This is something that’s earned Nigeria Number 1 ranking amongst ALL countries that enroll students in the West African Examinations Council exams. The media regularly reports it.

He replied that some of his friends had told him about such places and practices, but that he had not personally seen any instances where it happened.

I then asked him if he felt what he’d heard that people like parents and invigilators did there (telling students answers to exam questions), was right.

His answer confirmed my suspicions about how open occurrence of wrong doing can make young people who grow up in such an environment, come to accept them as normal.

He said (his exact words):

If it was not right, I don’t think they would do it so openly.

I could not believe my ears.

He had said it with an innocent look in his eyes which confirmed he actually did not know what was being done in those centers was wrong!

But I understood why he saw it that way. The impunity with which it was all done, and the fact that there was rarely any news that culprits were caught or punished made it appear to him that it was okay!

Unregulated exposure of impressionable minded children to unethical acts on a regular basis, can cause them to get so used to it that they think it’s normal.

That day, my determination to counter the corrupting influence of the society on them was renewed as a result of that incident.

I promptly called his siblings to join him and proceeded to explain to them why such practices were VERY wrong, and why it was important that they ALL never accept to see them as being otherwise.

To encourage them, I told them of the many instances I had suffered harassment in my personal and work life for refusing to do wrong that others did, and how staying firm that the Creator would open alternative doors for me to follow, yielded positive benefits for me, time and time again.

What could be worse than a brilliant child with wonderful God-given talents and abilities who grows up learning to see hard work as needless and corrupt enrichment as worthwhile?

I refuse to let it happen to my kids.

And I will continue to take every step I feel necessary to TEACH them why they must not be that way, and also shield them from such corrupting influences, UNTIL such a time that I am convinced that they have developed enough strength of character to RESIST it all.

I suggest you seriously consider doing the same – IF you want to have peace of mind regarding your child’s LONG after s/he leaves home.

Those who do it right will never be afraid of getting news that their adult children have been found engaging in unbecoming conduct.

They will confidently say: MY SON OR DAUGHTER would never do that, and stand by their child no matter what.

I want to be able to do that.

Do you?

Authentically Successful African Billionnaire Shares True Life Stories In a Series About Fighting Corruption to Succeed in Business [Econet Wireless Founder, Strive Masiyawa Sets an Example Worth Emulating by Business Leaders Worldwide]

Strive Masiyawa, billionnaire founder of Econet Wireless recently began writing a beautifully eye opening and educative series on the subtle shapes and forms in which corruption happens in business here in Africa – and I’m ecstatic he’s doing what he promised!

Thank heavens he’s a globally reconized billionnaire who rubs shoulders with authentically successful others (like Richard Branson) AND he’s also well known for being very pious and strictly honest in all his dealings.

If not for the above, coupled with well known true stories about how he successfully defeated corrupt state sponsored attempts to stifle his business right from his startup years, Masiyawa would by now have probably been accused by those with vested interests, of being “jealous” or “bitter” or “frustrated” etc.

That’s what those who benefit directly or indirectly from corruption readily say about those who speak out against it.

I’ve written about this great man in the past, noting that he is one truly authentically successful entrepreneur billionnaire African that I reckon with.
.
Most of the others are phonies: What he is saying about corruption is how they make their own money!

Hopefully the young Africans who eagerly click LIKE on Masiyawa’s anti-corruption anecdotal series on Facebook, will remember to walk their talk when faced with the social pressures back in their respective societies and communities.

I say this as one who has had to pay the price for doing so in my personal and business life for over a decade, and gotten mocked or criticized for doing so by most of my peers and younger others.

It is NOT easy to do.

Incidentally, some of the youth want to understand better how corruption happens and why they must resist it.

For instance one young Nigerian, few weeks back, when Masiyawa announced his intention to start this series, had commented that he looked forward to reading about why Masiyawa’s Econet Wireless business failed in Nigeria.

It’s the same question another billionnaire – Richard Branson – has had to respond to, in discussing the demise of the Virgin Nigeria venture he once operated in a partnership with that country’s government.

I certainly hope Masiyawa shares the details of what happened during that period he ran Econet Wireless in Nigeria!

Now, I hinted at it above, and Masiya himself has noted also, that following this true and honest (zero-tolerance-for-corruption) path will not be easy. He pointed out that you may lose friends, lose business/money and it could even cost you your life. Yet he recommends that you stay firm and do it anyway!

I agree with him, and the growing success, and significance I enjoy today for what I do, though long in coming, is proof that anyone who stands boldly against corruption with firm faith in the Creator, combined with a willingness to work hard and be creative, will NEVER fail.

Click here to read his 2nd anecdote, about corruption that happens when Commission Agents win goverment contracts by cutting crooked inside deals on behalf of “foreign partners” they represent.

For me, Masiyawa now stands head and shoulders above many other business owners in the world for being willing to stick his neck out in this manner, to EXPOSE inside details of corrupt dealings he has encountered and rejected on the way to becoming a billionnaire.

Through him, more Africans will learn that it is possible to get truly rich without engaging in any corner cutting – unlike what so many misguided friends, clients, and even very close relatives, some elderly too, kept trying to force me to accept.

I never did, and some resent me for it, to the extent that they still look for ways to pull me down, till this day.

Yet I’m doing better than ever, because I used my creativity, with lots of hard work, coupled with blind and unquestioning faith in the Creator to develop a unique system that enables me earn over 80% of my income online.

I recall that at a point back in 2004 or so, I took my fight against corruption online by launching what I called a Beat The Nigerian Factor (BTNF) mini site, where I published examples of corruption I encountered.

That’s why I love what Masiyawa is doing so much!

Anyone who is willing can find a way around corruption. The way I see it, Strive Masiyawa’s accomplishments offer the needed inspiration to do it, and his zero cost “lectures” provide the required guidelines you can follow to succeed

.

That means you now have no excuse to NOT do it.

The ball is in your court.

Will you join us to help kick corruption permanently out of Africa?

I hope you do, and the following quote by Masiyawa indicates he does too:

It’s time to play by a different (ethical) set of rules”
