I’m a keen student of human nature…comparing people from different cultures, especially with regard to how they tackle problems.

Here’s a hard truth  I feel compelled to state: I’ve found many Nigerians/Africans unwilling to actively apply their mental abilities to solve everyday problems they face in the physical realm.

Our Culture Influences Our Attitudes Towards Thinking Up Lasting Solutions to Problems

Out here, even well schooled persons sometimes display an aversion for investing quality THINKING time to evolve more efficient solutions to daily challenges in society.

This is why so much dependence on solutions from foreign cultures (often not directly usable!) exists.

A culture where people are too impatient to stop and think of a better way to solve a problem, is one that will most likely stay stuck with outdated methods for a long time, or keep depending on others.

In contrast, one that encourages – and rewards – people to spend quality time thinking of better ways to do things, will evolve to higher levels…and keep leading others.

Many Business Owners Out Here Are Often In a Hurry…To Do Things They Same Way They’ve Always Done Them!

What I’m saying here relates to stuff as simple as fetching water, cooking etc. It’s nice to use “traditional” ways – sometimes….

But the gas cooker and water pump make life much easier don’t they?

Guess where they were invented? How many “inventions” have WE sent over there? Hmm….

One would imagine that business persons, entrepreneurs especially, can influence a change. But what I’ve seen over the past decade suggests otherwise.

When you ask if they ever thought of a better way to do what they do, they often impatiently respond along the lines of:

 “Look I don’t have time for that now. I’m too busy.”

But THAT tends to be the reason why they are always too busy…and rarely have time!

You see, they fail to make out time to THINK up more efficient ways to tackle their challenges. As a result problems mount and KEEP them busy!!

 [Remember…life is a matter of percentages. So I am NOT saying ALL Nigerians/Africans are like this!]

Some Examples to Illustrate My Point…

Tell a Nigerian/African business owner that employing an army of “marketers” to find buyers for the 12,000 broilers ready for market may not be a smart way to spend money/time, and s/he might say “I don’t have time for theory!” – e.g.  in reference to your suggestion that one marketer use a mix of offline and offline strategies to find high paying medium to long term bulk buyers.

Talk to him/her about using custom software to record data and generate performance indicators for decision making, and s/he’s likely to say “I don’t need it”.

Yet s/he and her staff could spend hours writing down farm data in books or posting them in manual Excel sheets, then struggling to analyse them into something sensible. That is, if they bother at all!

Quite often some give “cost” as an excuse for not buying.

But when cost is okay, and they buy, I’ve found many fail to USE what they buy! They “try” for a while, then dump it and go back to killing fires.

Here’s One Short But True Story, That Should Jolt You Into Taking Me Seriously…

I once had a Nigerian consultant client pay me N100k in full, up front to build an app for his building construction company.

For months later I tried to get a meeting to review the finished product with me, and he NEVER once made himself available.

So I dropped off the app on a CD, with user guide etc…

And till this day he has NEVER called me about it (even though we recently met at a social function, and I mentioned it…to which he just said – smiling in an embarassed manner – “Oh, you mean I never discusssed it with you?“)

“Amazing!”…is what you probably think about the above. “Scary” was what it was for me…!!!

The above is one of many experiences that made me decide to focus on serving Farm Business Owners. More of them use solutions they buy from me, and that gives me something to tell new prospects!

I’ve Seen This Happen Repeatedly: My Conclusion Is That It Boils Down to One’s “Mental Attitude”

This mental attitude “thing” is what made it possible for the “smallish” Bruce Lee, to fell opponents much MUCH bigger than himself, within seconds of combat…becoming a legend in the process.

Any martial arts expert who knows his/her stuff will tell you it’s not size that determines who wins.

And it’s not strength either.

Oh, you can have intelligence, speed, agility and all those other things.

But one thing which can outlast ALL those other strengths in your opponent, is an ability to use your God-given MENTAL abilities to THINK up creative ways to (and keep believing you CAN) WIN.

Below is a photo I took yesterday (Thursday, 22nd May 2014) in a Cotonou restaurant, with a Cameroonian client (Arnaud Franklin Nana), who – like me – is based in Benin Republic.

We discussed business and also shared updates about our work etc – including stuff like this drama with my website…

I should point out that most of my authentic clients have similar relationships with me. We relate more like FRIENDS, than business associates. And that includes those I have NEVER met in the flesh!

By the time we parted ways he’d told me about 3 projects he wanted me to handle. Two for him. One for a private university he runs with Victor Ogar, his Nigerian partner of many years. All three relate to the Web Marketing based Hosting Service I provide.

It is my experience based opinion that succeeding or failing is often 99% of the time a mental game. That’s why succeeding continually requires one to develop a firm control of one’s mind state under ANY conditions.

It’s why champions in sports and life often have coaches, mentors and psychologists.

Everyone experiences setbacks in life. Including successful people. But not all who fall ever recover, talks less of achieving greater success.

But some people do. And many times they are far from being specially gifted. Indeed, quite often they tend to be average people!

This article explains why…ending with my offer to teach you how to defy adversity to achieve extraordinary success, even if you’re just an ordinary guy…or gal :-))

Let’s Start With Tiger Woods…

He took a major fall from grace to grass. But he systematically worked on himself, to climb right back to the very top of world Golf rankings.

If anyone tells you Tiger Woods did not need to do a MAJOR “psyche” job on himself, to maintain the state of mind needed for him to return to winning ways (despite the mental anguish of the media hyped scandal from his marriage) that person would be the biggest joker on planet Earth!

So, I’m saying it’s what you think about yourself, and your set goal, that determines if you’ll make it or not.

For me, 99% of the time, that’s what happens.

Your talents, and knowledge etc only make up the remaining 1% of what determines your success or failure.

This is why otherwise ordinary people achieve extraordinary success, leaving more talented, skilled and knowledgeable others biting the dust behind them. We see it happen all the time.

When they see it happen, some people wonder: “How come this guy who has nothing can succeed, or recover from a setback, and I can’t?”.

The simple answer is what that “guy” had in his heads, when things got tough. How he was thinking about what he wanted to achieve all through!

My Story: Building a Superior Incarnation of the 9 Year Old Domain I Lost Last Week

It was like a dream. One minute the blog was there on my laptop screen, as I published Issue No. 141 of my speaking IDEAS newsletter. A few minutes later, while walking out of the Lagos cafe, I tried to view the blog on my Blackberry.

I got a “gateway error”. So I refreshed the browser. Same thing. Twice, then thrice. No change! Maybe my connectivity is acting up again, I thought. So I checked Google. That showed up. I also checked a client’s website – which also showed.

At that point I knew the problem was specific to my website.

So I typed the primary domain name again: www.spontaneousdevelopment.com: THE domain I’d used for over 9 years, to get so much search engine visibility, credibility and recognition, for my work, and myself, both on and off the web.

And all that, within and outside the African continent too.

This time, the Blackberry’s browser, took me to a different page…and a million crazy thoughts began running through my mind…!

Long story short, I found out my domain had been taken over by my former web hosts – Aplus.net.

When I contacted them they explained what had happened and asked me to pay some fee to get it back.

But I basically told them to keep the domain name, and instead chose to move my website to tayosolagbade.com, which I’d just renewed for a second year (read the full story here).

The Rest Is Now History, As They Say…

I’ve since put all the expertise I have served my many clients with, into bringing about a re-incarnation of my online presence as a much MORE powerful brand, than when it was on spontaneousdevelopment.com.

When I began work on this new website last week – at www.tayosolagbade.com – I was still with my family in Nigeria.

That was my 6th week with them, following my arrival to welcome our new baby boy, who is now named “Tayo Solagbade Junior” :-))

However, as the message below, which I sent to a facebook friend (who wrote asking work was going on the new site) shows, working from Nigeria remains most unprofitable for me.

Only the love I had for my family, had made me stay that long.
And it had meant my having to give up a huge amount of daly productivity in the process.

But after this domain palavar began, I realised I needed to make rapid progress. So I left Lagos and returned to Benin Republic. Within a few short days of working from here in Cotonou, I’ve made massive progress in building the new website and blog!

So, rather than hurt me, this development has been an outright blessing!

You see, it’s the Creator at work AGAIN in helping me find my true path in life i.e. the direction I need to follow…which I’ve been so conflicted about for months now.

What I need to do is now crystal clear to me: Take a look at tayosolagbade.com‘s evolving shape and form – and see how adversity can bring out the best from anyone who chooses to use it for that purpose, with persistence, determination and ABSOLUTE FAITH in the Creator!

You Can Learn How to Defeat Adversity

Today, defying adversity comes more or less naturally to me.

But I did not start out that way.

For decades I’ve diligently applied myself to mastering adversity in any form it has presented itself. And that has made me emerge a real champion in every area of endeavour I have even ventured.

Those who have direct contact with me during such periods often get convinced that I “cannot fail”.

Many see me fall, again and again. But every time they think I won’t get back up, I not only do, BUT I also come back with a bigger bang, at a higher level, than before. After seeing me do it for a while, they naturally stop expecting anything less from me!

I would say – at the risk of sounding immodest – only those who really do not know me, will make the mistake of thinking I could ever give up!

Andy R. Jones was Brewery Operations Manager in Guinness Benin Brewery, located in Edo state, back in December 2001, when I resigned to start my own business.

During a speech he gave about me, he repeatedly told the audience at the send forth party organized for me that “Tayo simply refuses to fail!”

Yet this gentleman had had less than one year to see me in action as Training & Technical Development Manager, and later Acting Production Manager to draw that conclusion.

However, in that time, I’d delivered certain performances that exceeded not just his expectations, but those also, of my direct boss Nick Bathie.

This explains why he went further and wrote in two separate cards sent to me:

“Tayo, I honestly believe you are one of those who will succeed at anything he does. Your commitment and effort has been outstanding….Thanks for all your hard work since I’ve been here – you will be sorely missed. You see, I’m going that far back to bring up these comments, to show that success really does leave a trail. I did not become this way overnight.

I could go on. But my purpose is not to brag. Instead I only offer the above as proof that what I tell you is true.

That you can also defy adversity, indeed defy failure(!), repeatedly, to achieve ANY goals you set your mind on. Like I continue to do.

No. 140: Knowledge Without “Know-How” Rarely Yields Success

Knowing “what to do” is crucial. However, knowing “HOW to do it” is the key to ultimate success. The former has to do with your knowledge. The latter relates to your ability to apply that knowledge to achieve results you want i.e. your “know-how”.

Your success in life depends on being able to develop the latter!

To illustrate my point, I’ll use analogies that we can all relate to.

As an employee, your on-the-job “know-how” will determine your success or otherwise.

For instance, a sales person would “know” that s/he needs to meet the monthly sales target set by the boss or company.

That could be to sell one thousand crates of farm eggs for instance.

But “how” to do that, may not be something s/he would be very clear about.

So many ways exist to go about “selling” anything. And without a clear idea of which “way” would yield the best results (i.e. actual – not credit – sales that put money in your pockets), “knowing” what to do can be quite useless sometimes!

This is why sales people attend (or get sent on) Sales and Marketing Training course. The hope or expectation is that they will come away with the additional ability to find profitable PAYING customers to sell to.

That’s what often separates top sales persons from all others.

But not everyone “knows how”. And that includes those who provide “training” or “lectures” on sales and marketing!

Trainers lacking “know-how” (and those who learn from them) tend to focus on “theory” (i.e. knowledge). They ignore the hands-on element/practical that cements learners’ “know-how”.

As an Entrepreneur, Your Selling Success Depends On Your “Know-How”

You most likely know your stuff inside out, backwards and forwards – like Burt Dubin suggests.

If you don’t please make out time to do so. It’s a basic requirement for successfully selling yourself as an expert-who-speaks.

But knowing your stuff is just one side to it.

“Knowing HOW” to sell yourself to – and subsequently IMPRESS – paying clients is however another thing entirely.

Sadly, I see too many people who think they can simply jump in the pond and start “catching the fish”.

They fail to realize that careful planning and implementation of a tried and tested METHODs is best for recruiting good buyers.

No One is Born With “Know-How”…

None of us is. However some of us arrive more equipped to demonstrate “know-how”, than others.

In reality, anyone so willing, can successfully develop it to achieve ANY goal s/he desires. All that is required is the conviction to do what it takes, for as long as may be needed.

I say this based on my achievements as an entrepreneur over the past decade. My conviction also comes from studying and relating with significant others who have achieved great feats by developing their own “know-how”.

One of them is Burt Dubin. Through exposure to him, my ability to “sell to ” and “impress” my target audience has greatly improved.

It is noteworthy, however, that I had to ADD my own uniqueness to the mix, to make it work.

In other words, developing “know-how” requires learning proven ways, and adapting them to your unique skills/needs.

Two Ways I Believe “Know-How” Can be Developed

If you desire significant long term success, aiming for methods that yield sustainable results is best.

This is why developing your “know-how” relevant to achieving your goal(s) is so crucial. I discuss two possible ways to do that…

1. Developing “Know-How” Via Trial and Error:

I personally consider this the hard way. It involves trying out different ideas, concepts, strategies and techniques untill you narrow down to what works, then refine – and perfect – it.

An Example: I’ve been interacting with some Farm CEOs about my new Sales and Marketing Coaching and Support Service.

What I’ve noticed is that a few who contact me think my FREE Power Point Slide show presentation contains everything, which means they don’t need me.

Burt Dubin, in one of his articles, referred to such people as “free loaders”. Those not really interested in the solution I offer. They only seek to get what they can without paying.

The truth is however that my slide show’s content is simply a condensed version of ideas I’ve shared in past Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas articles.

Basically, it tells you as a Farm CEO WHAT you need to do, to find profitable buyers.

But the HOW is not specified. And it’s the HOW that really matters. That’s what determines your success.

The “HOW” (of finding profitable buyers) is what Farm CEOs need my help with!

It goes without saying that you can work out “how to” by yourself.

But you may not have the benefit of saving time, effort, and resources, AND also being sure that you’re on the right path.

You would, by implication, be towing the “Trial and Error” line.

There would be nothing wrong with that, if you don’t mind the negatives that could result.

However, for those keen to make more productive use of their time and effort, the next option below, will appeal more to them…

2. Developing “Know-How” Via Tried & Proven Systems:

This option involves tapping into the experience based real world relevant guidance of others who have done what you wish to do – or something similar.

You can achieve this learning through studying books, audios, videos, articles, reports etc prepared by successful others you identify to offer the wisdom you seek.

In some case, you may also be able to connect directly with such persons for personal coaching or mentoring.

All or some of that could be free, or for a fee. Either way, access to their expertise in this regard would be available.

Typically, these would be accomplished experts in your area of focus/interest. And they would have condensed their knowledge and “know-how” into a form others can learn from.

Quite often, many would have used the “trial and error” method mentioned in 1. above – out of necessity – to succeed.

Now, being a Best Practice and Performance Improvement advocate, I believe in NOT reinventing the wheel.

That’s why I prefer this second option (of using proven “systems” to develop the “know-how” I need to achieve long term success.

I’ll conclude this write-up by describing one such system…

Is It (Sometimes) Good To Have A Bad Boss?

Who is a good boss? And when can you correctly say that your boss is "bad"? This is an issue that is subject to a lot of debate. Does the fact that your boss does(or makes you do) certain things you personally dislike, make him/her "bad"? I say NOT necessarily!

This article explores this subject, using findings from a management research paper survey conducted in 2001 as a basis for discussion.

In December 2001, I finished writing a (45-page) management research paper titled "Self-Development As A Tool For Achieving Career Advancement".

In it, I referred to the observation Zig Ziglar made in his book – Over The Top – about certain employees who go to work each day without working to improve their abilities to do the job for which they are being paid.

He accurately descried such persons as having one year’s experience repeated every other year, without making any effort to change the trend.

My paper’s research problems were stated in question form as follows:

1. What can the individual manager (employee) do to ensure career success or advancement in an organisation?

2. What can the organisation do to ensure an enabling environment is created for her managers (employees) to continuously achieve career success or advancement?

In trying to answer the above questions I administered(over a 3 month period) a structured questionnaire to respondents (managers in indigenous and multinational corporate organisations in two cities – Lagos and Benin).

I was particularly intrigued to note from the study’s results, that the managers strongly agreed that having a bad experience at work – such as working for a bad boss– could be beneficial for one’s personal development.

This was an interesting response because I had known many managers (including myself, early in my career as an employee) to complain bitterly if they had a boss that gave them what they interpreted to be "a hard time" at work.

They would sometimes even wistfully express the desire to swop places with a colleague who they “thought” was having what they considered a better time since his/her boss never seemed to make life difficult for him/her.

What made it even more noteworthy was that when asked for details of why they thought their boss was bad, they would say things like “he never lets me rest – it’s always one assignment after the other, and its so difficult to satisfy him!”.

The truth, based on the experience of many successful executives is that in working with such a boss, many managers/employees have developed better capabilities than they would have, if they had reported to some more “passive” or less demanding kind of boss.

In fact, individuals like the “complaining” managers earlier described sometimes go on to get recognised/rewarded on moving to a new job or different department later on in their careers, for their seeming ability to produce good quality work under pressure etc. At that time the manager might begin to feel grateful to that “bad” or “difficult” boss from the past!

But then again, there can be instances when a boss is indeed bad.

Maybe he cheats, practices favoritism etc. In this case, the affected manger/employee could – among other possible actions – do well to note those qualities in the boss that he/she dislikes, and use them as a guide to avoid becoming like the boss in the future.

In other words, I am saying that by having a bad boss, a manager can learn how NOT to become one him/herself! Have you ever noticed that the people who set-up human rights or child abuse refuge centres etc are often people who themselves have suffered from that same problem before getting “liberated”?

To sum it up, the truth is:

1. That difficult persons can challenge us to put in more effort and deliver better results than we normally would, if they were not present – making their presence/actions a blessing of sorts for us.

2. We can sometimes learn how to be good from those who are bad – or not as good as they should be.

The above implies that having a bad boss can, to some extent, be a useful experience which ultimately equips us to achieve more of our potential than we normally would. The challenge is for you to make the most of the "bad’ situation: Study that boss, and learn how to manage him/her to achieve your desired goal(s).

As psychologists would say: The glass can be said to be half-full or half-empty. It all depends on HOW YOU LOOK AT IT i.e. your mental attitude.

The Story of an Employee Whose Cup was “FULL” (How Thinking You Know It All, Can Cost You/Your Employer!)

As a keen student of human nature, I’ve noticed that once (we think) we’re doing well, many of us have a tendency to conclude no one can tell us anything new.

Last week, I encountered a young lady afflicted with this problem while visiting my bank. I’d overheard her giving marketing tips to a new (female) recruit, regarding how to relate with prospective clients (towards selling personal insurance policies offered by the bank’s subsidiary).

At a point she said “Look. If you want these people to sign up for a policy, you have to chase them. Get their phone numbers, and call them all the time. Follow up with them by visiting them at work. Even try to go out to lunch with them. By the time you persistently follow up with them like this, they will have no choice but to buy from you. That’s how I started. It was not easy, but I made my sales target. Look where I am today? You can also do the same…”

After listening to their conversation for a little while longer, I could not help asking if I could make a few comments. She readily agreed.

I began by expressing the view that “chasing” prospects down in the manner she’d described is used by many conventional sales people to win buyers. I then noted that it however has a tendency to result in resentful buyers, who end up feeling they were harassed into making a purchase.

Basically, such persons would have made the purchase out of frustration, to put an end to the relentless chasing by the sales person.

This is why many such buyers rarely do repeat purchases with the sales person. Instead, they would have made the purchase to say “I hope now that I’ve bought it, s/he will leave me in peace!”

Next, I told her I believed the company needed to consider providing members of the marketing/sales team, a platform for building relationships with prospects, towards converting them to clients over time.

Specifically, I referred to the fact that their flyer indicated they had a Facebook page, and website. Adding a blog linked – via RSS feeds – to the website and social media outlets, AND would be a low cost, but potentially high impact platform to attract potential clients.

That plaform would be used to provide information and education to make such prospects willingly take action to sign up for (or make enquiries about) insurance policies on offer.

At this point, she got up impatiently shaking her head saying:

“Thanks for your suggestion. But you see, our company is not a small company. If you visit our website, you will see that we have offices all over the world. We only teamed up with the bank here in Nigeria, to access its customer network and save expenses on overheads. But we’re not begging for customers. Look if you listen to radio and TV we have adverts running daily…”

I gently countered saying:

“If I go by what you’re saying, I may be tempted to conclude you don’t even need a marketing team. Indeed, we might assume that customers are banging down your doors daily. Which makes me wonder why your talk with your new recruit involved asking her to do so much chasing…I would have expected it to be the other way round. Potential customers should be chasing you guys so hard that you won’t even have time, or need to chase ANY clients!”

She replied that she was not saying they had excess customers, but that he company had no need to go cap-in-hand (figuratively speaking) to potential customers.

To her, what I proposed in terms of the more subtle, stealth based, less direct marketing to attract customers, amounted to “begging”.

In her view, her company was too big for that.

Listening to her, I got the impression that she believed the marketers only needed to go with their “offers” to “viable prospects” they identified. Then they would tell the latter their company is the biggest player in the market, and that s/he should feel grateful they are chasing him/her!

We eventually agreed to disagree, and she left.

I could not help feeling sorry for her though. She’d let her ego deny her an opportunity to possibly harvest useful insights.

Insights that could be channeled back to her company, or even put to use by her, to achieve improved client recruitment results. If nothing else, removing the labour intensive process from winning new buyers would be worthwhile.

I say this as one who sells products and services to buyers, who over 90%  of the time come to me, by themselves.

Very rarely do I have to reach out to potential buyers.

The same strategy I tried to describe to her is what I’ve used for years and continue to use today. And many individuals and businesses of all sizes, which have smart thinking decision  makers at the helm of affairs use this same approach.

Even right here in the Nigerian marketplace, companies of various sizes do it. But she was just too blinded to see!

Sometimes, all we have to do is listen. I do it a lot.

It has not always been my nature to listen, but the pain and suffering I reaped from NOT slowing down and listening, especially in my startup years, forced me to LEARN to do so!

This is why every now and then I gain new insights, even from persons younger than me, that I put to use, with great results to show.

Ego tripping rarely does anyone ANY GOOD!

My Encounter With the Above Mentioned Insurance Lady, Reminded Me of A Story I Once Read Many Years Ago

It’s about a young man who traveled a very long distance to see a wise old man in order to learn the secrets of success.

Upon arriving at the old man’s house the young man expressed his desire to learn what he needed to do in order to become successful.

The old man proceeded to share his wisdom and knowledge about the secrets of success with the young man by giving step-by-step guidelines for the latter to follow.

However each time he mentioned a step, the young man would say he had tried that and it did not work!

This went on for some time, till the old man paused and asked, “Would you like to drink some tea?”

The young man replied in the affirmative.

The old man then brought out a teacup on a saucer, placed it in front of the young man and began pouring hot tea into it.

When the cup got full, the old man kept on pouring the tea so that it began to overflow into the saucer.

The young man screamed, “Stop! Can’t you see the cup is full?”

To which the old man replied: “Yes, I know. You see, the cup is just like you – you are too full of yourself for me to add anything to you.

So I’m sorry, but I cannot help you. You need to first of all empty yourself of yourself, before I can then put any knowledge into you”.

I believe the story is self-explanatory and the message very clear.

You must never let yourself get to the point where you think no one can teach you anything new.

Even those not as successful as you can teach you plenty that you do not know!

You only need to “open your eyes and ears” to learn from them.

Never let your cup be full…or you might wind up with EMPTY POCKETS!

No. 136: Stop Taking Failure Personally!

People who take failure personally, often fail to succeed. Some who succeed fail to continue succeeding, for the same reason!

Most people want things to work the way they want all the time. And when that doesn’t happen, they give up on themselves.

But people who succeed often do so, because they NEVER take failure personally!

Your mental attitude towards things that go wrong with your plans determines how each venture you embark upon in your life ends.

If you enrol for a professional exam and fail, it’s natural that you feel bad about it. However, it does you no good to use that experience, or any that may follow it, no matter how many times they occur, to imply that you are a failure.

Now, one of the things that tend to happen is that others could do things to make you feel like one.

I mean people around you who witness or hear/read about your unsuccessful attempt…or multiple unsuccessful attempts.

They could say things to your face or behind your back that suggest they consider you a failure.

Like any other human being, you are likely to find such feedback painful.

In some cases, such individuals may even go as far as putting you down, and even publicly mocking you. Indeed, those who do such things can often be loved ones e.g. relatives, close friends etc who have access to the details of your efforts and failures.

Typically, they are the ones who would have seen you fail more often than they have seen you succeed.

Many times such individuals will get to a point where they even consider themselves experts of some sort on you, and what you’re capable of achieving.

The irony is that virtually every one of us has a potential tendency to be guilty of doing the above. For instance, imagine you have a brother/sister, or son/daughter or friend who you know to be clumsy. Maybe s/he even stammers a lot as well.

Then one day s/he announces a plan to become a professional singer and dancer. How would you react? Especially when most of your memories of time with him/her are about his/her intermittent stammering, and also falling, or tipping things over?

The automatic response most of us would give is that we would never make fun of, or put anyone down.

But it’s our body language that gives us away to the person most times. The involuntary rolling of the eyes or raising of eyebrows, indulging smiles etc.

Those given such treatment will often not miss it, and it can do major negative damage to their sense of self-worth.

The truth is however that YOU alone can determine how you let others make you feel. And if you learn to believe in yourself, no matter what people say, or what happens to you, or what you do wrong, you’ll will ALWAYS end up better off.

When your plans go wrong in any areas of your life, understand that it NEVER means you’re bad or something is wrong with you.

Instead, know that it’s a sign that you need to go back and check what you need to do better or differently, and then try again.

I did not come up with the above piece of insight. It came from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. From the first day I read it and began to apply it in my life, I learnt to EXTERNALIZE failure.

By this I mean that I came to understand that nothing I failed at defined me. That it did not matter how others saw it.

What matters is, and will always be how I see it. And if I do not see what happens to me as the end of the world, then it will not be.

This mental attitude helped me successfully pass through years of prolonged hardship and suffering, as an entrepreneur, till I began to find success.

It equipped me to confidently pick myself back up each time I fell flat on my face in my efforts as an entrepreneur. It gave me to courage to start all over again, time after time, after I’d failed to succeed in taking my business to the next level.

When I found myself unable to fulfil my responsibilities to my wife and kids, to the point that I had to swallow my pride and ask for help from relatives, it helped me stay confident in my ability to bounce back.

Today, all who stood by me, and those who watched from a distance, while I struggled, acknowledge that I AM a success, and not a failure.

But I first had to FIRST think of myself as NOT being one, before they could see me that way, through the results I achieved.

You can succeed the same way too. Just stop taking your failures personally. They will happen, but they can never determine what you will become. They can never keep you from success.

Remember that always, and you’ll eventually have great success stories to tell…like I do on this website!

To Sell with Your Writing, Touch on Different Areas of Your Target Audience’s Life

Successful selling in any area of life requires gaining the trust of the prospective buyer. If you think about why YOU buy things, you’ll likely discover multiple factors often influence your final decision.

For instance, I have bought tutorial CDs and books on a variety of subjects, because I felt they would be useful for my kids’ education.

But not classroom education now.

I refer here to my plan to make them acquire real world relevant knowledge about vocations one can venture into. Examples include various aspect of cooking e.g. baking. And this is why today, they bake cakes without using an oven, which they sell during break time in their school.

So I buy products and services with my kids, their mother, or other loved ones in mind.

But I also look out for items that offer potentially useful value me, in my personal life, as well as for the work I do.

Many people who want to sell will benefit by adopting a similar holistic perspective in thinking about their potential buyers.

The truth is you can make your sales offers by carefully presenting them from a variety of angles that touch on the target audience’s potential interests.

I’ve been doing this for years. My realization of what makes me buy, led me to an epiphany of sorts about how to sell to others.

Nine times out of ten, selling involves explaining benefits to people.

And that requires talking, or writing, or doing both…as creatively as possible.

A look at how I do my multidisciplinary writing on this blog provides a good case in point.

Most of your prospects will have interests that cover different aspects of life. They cannot help it, as long as they are human.

Writing on different categories, however works better if one weaves in references, where relevant or possible, to solutions you offer.

It can be done. You just need to do some creative thinking.

If you’ve ever wondered why I write on seemingly unrelated multiple categories on my blog, the above is why I do it.

1. Business Owners Often Interested in Entrepreneurship…So I Write About It

Basically I share true stories and experiences about my life as an entrepreneur.

From my goof ups to my big wins, I creatively present information and education to help others.

Not only does this cement my credibility as a hands on entrepreneur in the minds of readers, it also moves those interested in solutions I offer, closer to connecting with me by making enquiries or buying.

2. Some of My Prospects Have Full Time Jobs…So I Write About Career Development

So many of my recent buyers have turned out to be people working full time in well paying jobs, who have chosen to start their businesses part time.

Most times they use what they earn from their jobs to finance their business start-up and expansion.

This implies that if they keep doing well, or better at work, they’ll have more money to channel into their part time ventures.

And possibly at some stage grow it big enough to go full time in it.

By sharing my experience based ideas about succeeding in paid employment, such individuals can discover me. And in the process, some also discover I offer products they need to run their part time businesses better.

Examples include my feed formulation handbook and/or software, my poultry farm manager, my payslip generator, Self-Development Bible etc.

3. Some of My Prospects Have Kids…So I Write About Parenting

An oil company engineer, whose wife just had a baby boy, may suddenly develop an interest in parenting. Before then, when he was a bachelor, he would have had little or no interest.

In other words, an effort to learn more by reading ideas on parenting, could make a visitor discover a solution s/he has been looking for, on the site offering the parenting ideas.

I’ve been writing parenting articles for over a decade, but not because I want to use it as a strategy for selling myself or my products and services.

Instead, it’s a passion I have, to help parents get the best out of their kids. So I demonstrate the power of my parenting ideas by exposing my kids to them, and sharing the results we get.

This way, readers gain insights they can apply in their own homes. They appreciate it so much that some email me to say thanks, while others signup to get more via my newsletter.

In the process, some may discover solutions I offer, and make contact. See examples in the screenshots of some emails I received below…

Final Words: Use Your Writing to Touch on Different Areas of Your Target Audience’s Life

The above examples are based on successes I’m achieving in my use of multidisciplinary writing, to attract potential buyers of my unique range of products and services.

The increasing rate of success proves that it pays to be less direct – subtle in fact – when marketing your solutions.

Years ago, I learnt – the hard way – that people resist being “sold”.

They prefer to feel they did the buying on their own, and not because it was forced down their throats.

Stealth is another word that describes this approach.

To succeed often, write about subjects that interest those who fit your target audience profile.

The truth is however that such subjects may not necessarily relate in any way to what you even sell.

Instead, make sure what you write is truly useful to those who read it.

That will make them like you, and take you seriously.

Over time, they’re more likely to trust you…

And when people trust you, they will often buy from you.

You’ll consequently be able to tell friends and associates, about your rapidly increasing sales conversions…like I did in exceprts below from an email I sent out today:

"Right till close of work Friday 4th April 2014, I was tidying video tutorials to go with courier packs for 3 Farm CEOs who sent payment from Kano (Feed formulation Handbook and software), Jos (Poultry Farm Manager) and Warri (Feed Formulation Home Study Pack)…

I sent 2 of the packs off via Fedex at 5.15p.m, at Ikeja’s Toyin street. The 3rd goes out Monday a.m once I get the handbook copy made.

My new product offers are bringing in much more sales…

I still have a past buyer from Tanzania asking for payment details too (for my home study video), while the Kenyan CEO is working to repeat the bank transfer (for my Poultry Manager app), using the corrected domicillary account details I got by visiting my bank on Tuesday."

But to reap such rewards, my experiences strongly indicate one must keep doing it for the long term.
