To Succeed Despite Misconceptions and Stereotypes, Let Your Work Speak For You (2 True Stories)

Yesterday I had a Skype chat session with a Pakistan based Poultry Farm CEO, about my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager. At a point, he wrote: “it is good to see that kind of work from Africa”(screenshot below).

I knew he meant it was rare to find an African based in Africa, selling functional, and customizable Excel-Visual Basic software to a global audience.

Incidentally, he was not the first to do say that to me. Others have expressed similar sentiments in the past.

For instance, I’ve been friends with a “Singaporean” professional Excel-VB developer for about 5 years now…for the same reason…

He’d found my Excel Heaven website, and after watching my video demos, sent me a web form message to express how impressed he was.

Below: This video demonstration of a Financial Reporting App I built for a large Lagos based hospital in 2007, was one of those that got his attention:

He also pointed out that I could make a few additions to some of my demos, for better effect.

In that regard, he was referring specifically to an enhanced version of an MS Excel workbook for engineers, that I’d downloaded from www.structural-engineering.fsnet.co.uk – which (I think) is now also accessible via www.structural-engineering.co.uk.

See screenshot below.

NB: I'll be putting up a video demonstration showing how the enhanced version of this simple workbook functions, on my Youtube channel next week. Subscribe to the channel, if you wish to be notified

I replied saying I really did not have much interest in doing more than I had already done, as I doubted that potential buyers in my target market (Africa), would be interested in that kind of solution.

My only reason for going as far as I had, was to “test” the idea that came to me after I’d browsed through the workbook. When I saw how the query interfaced I’d added really boosted the speed and reliability of data retrieval from the different spreadsheets, I decided to put it online.

I still recall sending a copy of the enhanced menu driven version of the workbook to the author of the original workbook (at www.structural-engineering.fsnet.co.uk), just to let him know what I’d done.

[NB: Back then, my spontaneousdevelopment.com domain was still active. So I’d sent it via tayo at spontaneousdevelopment dot com. As I’ve since explained on this blog, that 9 year old domain got taken over by Aplus.net, on 4th may 2014. Click here to learn why/how that happened.]

My Singapore based enquirer pressed further, saying that if I made the modifications he proposed, it would be MORE useful to others from developed societies.

I then told him I’d created that improved version and offered it for FREE download, only to give interested persons from any part of the world password free access to study what I’d done, and improve on it if they so wished.

At a point in our email exchanges, he expressed surprise that I claimed to be based in Nigeria (this was late 2007).

[NB: I’ve since relocated from Nigeria, and have been based here in Cotonou since 1st April 2013. ]

As he put it, he did not imagine anyone from that part of the world, could produce Excel-VB driven apps of the quality that he’d seen on my site.

I replied that I was indeed a Nigerian based in Nigeria.

He countered that he’d checked the headers in my emails and found they were coming from servers in the US.

I explained that I used a US based web host (Aplus.net at the time), and that that was why the headers showed GMT data suggesting my mails originated from that end.

To convince him, I offered to call him on the mobile phone number he’d supplied when he first submitted the web form message on my website.

This was so as to prove to him that I was indeed physically in Nigeria.

He agreed.

So, I dialed his number and on the first ring he picked up, and we spoke for about 20 seconds. I asked if he now believed me, and he said he did.

We then ended the call and returned to exchanging emails.

It was an interesting experience. Two developers from opposite ends of the world, more or less, establishing what would go on to crystallize into a long standing friendship.

Today, “KC” (his initials from his real name) is connected with me on one of the popular social media platforms.

And over the years we have shared all sorts of project ideas.

I recall one time I had a request from a large hotel in Allen Avenue area of Ikeja, in Lagos, Nigeria.

They wanted me to make my Excel-VB driven Hotel Records Management Software automatically tap into the electronic door key cards software database.

And they wanted it to link each guest’s name with my software’s modules for accommodation, restaurant, laundry etc. That way, each guest’s bill would be generated by my app without need for manual addition of corresponding records from the electronic door key cards software.

I tried to meet with the MD of the electronic door vendor company. He was initially reluctant to give me access to the disk for the software, so I could determine how best to connect to the database from my Excel app.

That is, until the Manager of the hotel told him they would NOT purchase the key card software, unless it was established that it would work with my app.

KC had offered some experience based suggestions…he’d been in the “business” much longer and had massive experience from developing custom high performing apps for use by clients in various industries – including oil and gas.

But by the time I was able to examine the software on the hotel PC, and the files on the installation disk, I discovered it was a normal MS Access database that the key card software used!

That made the task much easier than I’d thought it would be.

And I soon setup the needed code to dynamically connect my app to the database.

The point I’m making however is that if I’d needed support to do something much more advanced (which KC had thought would be the case), I already had a competent online colleague/friend I could reach out to.

And that happened courtesy of my decision to put my work online, from my small corner of the world right here in Africa.

As for my Pakistani Farm CEO prospect, his web form enquiry to me had indicated he half-doubted I actually had the competence my video suggested. See his exact words below…

My Youtube video for the Poultry Farm Manager had led him to me (See below)

But when I read what he wrote in the comments field, I knew again that the stereotype about people from my part of the world was causing some “noise” in my marketing message, for him.

So, when we finally had our chat session on Skype, I was not surprised when – after I’d supplied detailed responses to his queries – he wrote:

“it is good to see that kind of work from Africa”.

Non-Africans, from Asia, Europe and America especially, are so used to meeting people from our part of the world, who lack skills like those I display online.

Even what I do using my own brand of Web Marketing, to generate search engine based leads for myself, and my clients, is something I’ve had people from developed societies express surprise at.

I periodically encounter this (often involuntary) stereotyping online, and also offline when I meet non-Africans face to face – even here in Cotonou.

Over the years I’ve tried to interest fellow Africans I meet (especially colleagues and younger persons) in doing what I do, the way I do it, using PC and Internet technology…

But very few have been interested. Not even those who studied IT or some related subject. And those who showed interest never had enough passion to develop the needed proficiency to excel at it.

For some reason our people always want to take the “easy” route. Especially something that does not require much mental exertion.

Ironically, PC and Internet technology if well used, offer Africa – and Africans – the most cost-effective avenue to create jobs/employment and also generate income – as individuals, groups, and even as nations.

I am hopeful that the work being done by a few of us will over time inspire more of our people to wake up and take their destiny into their own hands, like we have done!

Achieve Parenting Success By Telling True Stories (Hint: About Your Childhood Failures & Successes)

I wrote my new book titled KUKURU DANGER™ for my kids. It’s a collection of 4 TRUE stories about my trouble filled years between the ages of 10 and 16. In this article, I explain why I decided to offer it to other children and their parents.

The book is subtitled “Adventures (& Misadventures!) of a School Age Child Trying to Make Sense of the World and his purpose in it!”

And I end each story in it with tips and insights based on my experiences, and achievements during that time, and since.

Stories have a powerful influence on people – regardless of age. Especially true ones…

I have been educated and empowered by stories of other people. Important lessons about how to win in life come from studying the mistakes as well as successes of others.

This knowledge drove me to invest many long hours (waking up at 3/4 a.m. sometimes, to do my recordings) into finishing the writing of this new book and creating the accompanying resources (the audio narrations).

You see, since I began spending more time away from my kids (after relocating to Cotonou, from Lagos 15 months ago), I’ve wondered how to continue the real world relevant coaching/preparation I’ve been giving them.

And so, the above desire was another source of inspiration I tapped into, to finish this new book.

It occurred to me that apart from entrepreneurship projects I periodically engage them in (e.g. making pineapple peel drinks and cakes which they now sell), I could also create learning resources for them to use via self-study.

That (i.e. self-tutoring) happens to be one of the many useful skills I’ve been coaching them to develop.

So I began to spend my quiet time, when free from client projects, recalling major episodes of trouble I got into back in my formative years.

Then I would sit down and record 30 to 45 minute audio clips narrating what transpired in elaborate detail. All the naughty things I did, along with school mates and peers. I left nothing out.

The ultimate purpose is to give my kids a feel of what my childhood was like, and why/how my inspiration to live a purpose fill life like I do today, comes from there.

I’m using an app I found online to create promotional cartoon short story clips based on the book’s contents, which will be available for download from my website.

The photo below is a cartoon version of the original which was taken when I was about 8 years. I’ll be using this cartoon version on the book’s cover.

This is a cartoon version of an original photo of me, taken when I was about 8 years. I'll be using this cartoon version on the book's cover.
This is a cartoon version of an original photo of me, taken when I was about 8 years old. I’ll be using this cartoon version on the book’s cover.

The audio narrations are also ready. Every buyer of the book gets the audio version on an auto run DVD FREE (or via download as MP3).

Below: Another photo of me…this time more than 3 decades older than I was in the 1st photo above. This 2nd photo was taken this morning (25th July 2014) in Cotonou, Benin Republic at 8.30 a.m.

I’d just had a quick meal of spaghetti at my favorite spot on the way to one of the cafes I use.

And I have 6 of my own kids now. 3 of them between 11 and 15.

So, my decision to write my book came mainly from thinking of how to share my experiences when I was that age, with them.

I felt – from watching their reactions when I told them some of the stories – that we would connect better that way.

Experience has also taught me that doing this makes it easier to help people. They get to reflect on what they “learn” at their own pace.

Each of my kids owns an MP3 player with a memory card, that I bought a while back…

They listen to music most times on the devices, despite my warnings :-)

But I have also discovered that they do play the MP3 recordings I did of myself saying words in French and translating to English.

That’s actually one of the main reasons I bought those things – as part of their preparation to break the into learning the French language, towards joining me here in Cotonou.

When I meet them on my next visit, the MP3 versions of the stories from this new book, will be copied on to each child’s memory card, so s/he can listen and play back at will.

And each one will also get a copy of the complete book.

Final Words: I have big plans for my kids – And I feel every parent should have the same for their kids too!

I want my kids to make a better success of life than I did at their age. This will better equip them to be more competent in adulthood than they would be without such guidance.

It is my firm belief that parents need to play such roles in the lives of their kids, especially in today’s increasingly wayward world.

That’s why I urge you not to stop at just making sure they get “formal education”.

You need to give them a part of yourself, that will help them find meaning and direction in life.

It is to help other parents who may wish to do the above, that I decided NOT to limit my book and its audios to my kids.

Instead, I’ve chosen to publish it for purchase as a physical/print book that can be shipped to buyers anywhere in the world. Those who want a digital version in any of the popular formats will also be able to buy it from the same location – my online store i.e So, on Monday 28th July 2014,, I should be announcing the “release” (LOL!) of my “book of 4 true and educative childhood stories”: Kukuru Danger.

If you wonder what “Kukuru Danger” means, don’t worry, the promotional cartoon clips will soon make it known!

In the meantime, have a great weekend everyone. I know I will!

Readers Become Leaders ONLY If They Do The Right Kind of Reading!

Michael Angier once wrote that:

“Reading can be a powerful catalyst for thinking; it has the potential for stimulating wisdom.”.

I agree…but I would add that the “kind” of reading you do, will often be more important than the frequency at which you do it!

For instance, in talking about “reading”, I’m not referring here to gossip/entertainment magazines or even religious books!

Those can form part of one’s diet, but they should NEVER be the main course. Otherwise, one is likely to end up with a version of the “rickets of the mind” that Jim Rohn once wrote about.

In truth, if everybody spent their quality time only reading jokes, or books on religion, sports, comedy and entertainment in general, this planet would die a rapid death.

To get more leaders we need people to read MORE non-fiction texts. Indeed, even those who write fiction have benefitted from doing this!

It’s important to remember that many resources (e.g innovations) that make the world progress, were developed by people who spent (and spend!) their quality time THINKING up new and better ways of doing things.

And they do not do that by sitting in front of the TV, or going to comedy shows, or reading religious books round the clock.

Instead, they spend (and spend!) considerable time in research stations or other work spaces, to create, innovate and invent for mankind to take MORE quantum leaps forward.

That’s however not to say those who create and innovate, are only those who stay indoors to work…!

I’m just saying those who “lead” us in that manner often focus on thinking about how to make improvements happen, in their respective fields.

And very often, if asked, they will tell you they do lots of reading to help that process!

Interestingly, even the sportsmen and entertainers who excel at the highest levels in their fields, have reported that READING and THINKING played a great part in their phenomenal evolution.

Click here to read examples about the testimonials by legendary achievers from all walks of life, about the impact that reading Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich had on their personal and work related performances.

On the above page, celebrity boxers, basketball stars, music stars and even pastors(!), were quoted as saying great benefits accrued to them from reading “Think & Grow Rich”.

And yet that book is NOT about sports, or music, and certainly NOT religion!

However, we must give them credit for doing it right.

When they read that book, they did not stop there. Instead, they did what the author said, and went out to apply what they learnt from it. And that was what led them to success.

“Reading without thinking gives a disorderly mind, and thinking without reading makes one unbalanced” – Confucius.

I have also read “Think & Grow Rich”.

And in many of my past write ups, dating as far back as 2002, I have attested to the amazing insights it provides about achieving personal success – in ANY field.

The road map, and guidelines are clearly given.

You simply follow them, with unrelenting persistence and faith, to get the promised results.

Sadly, our educational system as it currently is does not really teach us to enjoy reading and thinking.

We all know that in many schools and institutions of higher learning today, the student only has to memorise notes given by the teacher, and do a “verbatim return to sender” to get full marks in class!

Whether the student can explain what he has written down, apply it in real life for a productive end is never an issue as far as the teacher is concerned!

Sometime in the past, I watched an inter-schools debate competition aired on a local TV station in Nigeria.

I was amazed by the ability of the students to make their arguments by reeling off one point after another, employing sophisticated vocabulary (that even university undergraduates would struggle with!) in the process.

The manner in which they delivered their speeches, however strongly suggested they were simply reciting what they memorized!

Typically, the teacher would write on paper for the student to “upload” to “memory”, for later “download” during his/her presentation.

As a result, the kids rarely made effort to understand what they read.

I believe that was why some of the students got totally confused, when they missed a line during their “recitation”!

That happened on more than one occasion during the debate event I watched that day.

My question is “what responsible school teacher or school owner would allow such damage to be done to students’ thinking abilities in order to win a competition?”.

In Robert Kiyosaki’s book “If You Want To Be Rich and Happy, Don’t Go To School?”, he wrote about how the traditional educational system was teaching American children to be “mindless parrots”.

He also quoted R. Buckminster Fuller on how each of us, and our children, can protect our minds from being “numbed” by such experiences.

Fuller stated that despite the fact that he was bothered by – and therefore questioned – many of the things he learnt in school, he found it necessary to give his teachers “their” answers in order to ensure he went through school successfully.

He however made sure he never stopped thinking along the lines of those things he felt to be true.

By so doing, Fuller was able to protect his own genius from the damaging impact of the traditional educational system. The rest of us can learn from this approach, and teach our kids to use it as well.

There is a frustrating dearth of real thinkers in Nigeria…and I dare say Africa in general

One great thinker we had who – unfortunately – has now passed on, was Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary Afro Beat Musician.

Even today, the lyrics of his songs show us how far ahead he had thought about (and “seen” into) the future of this country – and continent.

He had reflected deeply over the problems of the black race in Africa, and tried to open our eyes to the folly of the ways we chose (or were advised to follow).

A few of us listened, but the majority have missed it.

Why? Because those who missed it found it difficult to reflect on what he was saying and understand his concerns.

They simply stopped at enjoying his good music!

“The mind must be exercised if it is to grow and strengthen. The more you use your mind, the more it will improve your ability to think” – Jay Anderson

This inability (or unwillingness?) to think is not unusual. Long ago, Henry Ford said:

“Thinking is the most exacting job there is, which is why so few people engage in it”.

That’s why we need to discourage ROTE Learning (i.e. cramming) in schools.

It is important for people to “understand” what they “learn” because we learn new things in order to apply them to productive purposes later.

For instance, you learn “how to drive” so that you can eventually drive your car around unaided.

As Robert Kiyosaki explained in one of his books, if we employed the “traditional” school approach, you would learn all the theory of driving by memorizing the steps involved.

But, you would actually spend little (if any) time practicing how to drive the car using your new knowledge!

When that happens, you end up unable to drive a car even though you’ve been to driving school! Thankfully that is hardly ever the case, because it is easy to assess the value of the training given you in a driving school.

When you complete your driving lessons (and IF you have been a diligent student), you should be able to drive a car by the time you are leaving.

If you can’t, then you would have a right to challenge your driving “teacher”.

Final Words

“A chapter a day, keeps failure at bay” – Anon.

I have personally met many graduates of computer science from Nigerian universities, who after graduation go on to enrol for courses in private computer schools to gain basic computer appreciation skills!!

This is often because they discover that in the real world, the things they’ve been taught are outdated, and irrelevant to current developments in the industry.

If the problem is from their “teachers” and the students are unable to (or unsuccessful in) getting them to change their methods, such learners MUST invest personal time and effort to LEARN using the proper methods.

And that would be by reading to understand, and then THINKING based on what they have read and understood.

Those who do so are the ones who succeed in today’s world. That’s because they emerge as independent learners i.e. person’s capable of learning and apply what they learn to productive ends in the real world.

In the 21st century and beyond, the world will be depending more on such people, for it’s evolution to new levels.

The above is why a visionary genius like Alvin Toffler once wrote as follows:

“The illiterate of the 21st century, will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn” – Alvin Toffler

Back Good Quality Website Content With Delivery of Value Promised, to Achieve Web Marketing Success (Special Offer: Buy My Ration Formulator Software, and get my Poultry Farm Manager Software FREE)

Just like I’ve said in recent articles, the loss of my 9 year old spontaneousdevelopment.com on 4th May 2014, has not limited my online sales lead generation via my tayosolagbade.com, which replaced it. The number of enquiries has risen to the extent that my Website Conversion Ratio has actually INCREASED. This means that I’m actually getting MORE people contacting me about what I offer per traffic volume, than I used to.

NB: If you don’t know what a Website Conversion Ratio(WCR), or how to calculate it, click here to read an article I wrote in 2005, that explains (Note that my byline at the bottom of the article is yet to be updated to tayosolagbade.com. So you’ll find it still links to spontaneousdevlopment.com – which got taken over by Aplus.net in May 2014. Click here to learn why/how it happened.

But how come I’m getting a higher rate of Website Conversion after losing my domain?

Here’s my experience based understanding. And I’ve taken time to study this via trends, to be sure.

You see, the 9 year old domain had been around quite a while. So a lot of my syndicated articles all over the web, on 3rd party websites have by-lines at the end linking back to it.

That was responsible (in part) for thousands of visits I got daily.  The other factor was the RSS feeds driven traffic I was getting.

But with the loss of that domain, tayosolagbade.com which is just a year and some months old does not have many such back links to feed off of. As such, my major source of traffic has tended to be RSS feeds, articles marketing and social media.

Now, what I have not openly made known is that I took the opportunity of the domain name loss to refocus my online efforts.

And this time around, I’ve used my years of experience to pitch my offers more directly to Farm CEOs. But I still offer to work with those in other industries as well (like the private university and a startup consultancy I’m about finishing web development projects for here in Cotonou).

So when you visit www.tayosolagbade.com (and this blog as well), you will notice the clear statements I make about my primary target audience.

Then I went to my Youtube video channel, and updated all the descriptive content to reflect the new development. Plus, I’ve begun putting up educational videos (on sales and marketing) for farm business owners, alongside the software product demos already present.

In addition, I’ve focussed a lot of writing more blog posts with deliberate slant towards farm businesses.

Whatever blog category I write on, I deliberately try to use examples related directly or indirectly to farm businesses, as often as possible.

This way, MORE of such people who encounter my work online are getting drawn in, more often than was the case with the old domain name.

And that is why I keep getting enquires via email, phone and social media – in addition to those that come via the website.

Over the past 10 days for instance, I have taken a call from a farm CEO from Uyo, and responded to an email from one in Uganda. Both are poultry farmers, and both were interested in my Poultry Farm Manager app.

This afternoon, an enquiry came in via my website contact from a Farm CEO based in Rivers State in Nigeria.

The individual had initially filled/submitted the 2 field form to access the free downloads on my website. Then he’d gotten the auto response which contained a link to a detailed web form, to request for a demo of my Ration Formulator.

However, he wanted the Poultry Farm Manager. So, he filled the form and sent it to me, asking for a demo of that app to be sent to him.

Within seconds of getting it, I decided to call him up – because of an entry in his submission which made me quite curious.

See the screenshot below – note the circled entry field.

Below: Screenshot of website contact form enquiry from a Farm CEO based in Rivers State, Nigeria – received this afternoon (19th July 2014)

Screenshot of website contact form enquiry from a Farm CEO based in Rivers State, Nigeria - received this afternoon (19th July 2014)

I was surprised that he wrote that he’d found out about me/my website from www.africanbusinesscommunities.com. This was because I knew all my guest posts/articles accepted for publication on that website still had my by-lines at the bottom linking to my old domain. So it was not possible for him/her to have used that to get to my new domain name.

I knew it was likely he’d “Googled” to find me. But I expected that he should have said that, if he’d done so, rather than mention the 3rd party website.

So, I wanted to ask him and hear him respond, just to be sure.

You see, I’ve been getting software developers sending enquiries to get access to “demos” from me, using all sorts of aliases. And they’ve been coming from within and outside Africa (especially India).

Their motives I cannot be sure of. However, I do not like to have my time wasted.

That’s why I make a point of calling to speak with each person just to be sure s/he is a serious farm business owner looking for a solution. I want to help farm CEOs – not make myself open to being used and dumped (which has happened before).

First time I called, he did not pick up.

So I sent him an email stating that I needed to speak with him, and asking that he let me know when I could call.

Below: Screenshot of my email reply to the website contact form enquiry from a Farm CEO based in Rivers State, Nigeria

Screenshot of my email reply to the website contact form enquiry from a Farm CEO based in Rivers State, Nigeria

Within a few minutes, he replied. I then called again and spoke with him.

Our conversation was brief. I explained that I offer a demo only of my Ration Formulator, which has been on sale since 2004. He then asked me to send details of the mini version I told him could be had at a lower fee.

I also got answers to my questions. He told me he’d first discovered me at africanbusinesscommunities.com and then decided to Google for details about me. If you do that, tayosolagbade.com comes up in the first page of results. So, that was how he found me.

The above account confirms what I’ve always said that when people want something badly enough, they will go out of their way to get it.

That conversation however inspired me to write this article…and to launch a special offer that will remain open to ANYONE willing to take it up(see at the bottom of this post).

My reason for doing this is that, from speaking with this latest Farm CEO from Rivers State, I could feel he was serious about making a buy.

He noted that my video demo on Youtube was impressive, but that it was not enough to make a decision.

My experiences however indicate lack of a demo WILL NOT stop people who are READY, from buying

And I have over 7 years of proof to back up that claim.

For instance, I only began to offer demos of my Ration Formulator in May 2014 (2 months ago).

Yet, I’ve been selling it since 2004 (offline), then in 2006 I put up my You tube video demo and began selling it online!

Below: Video Demo of my Excel-VB Driven Ration Formulator – Computing 30% Protein Content Feed Formula – Excel-VB Ration Formulator

Click here to watch additional demonstration videos of my Ration Formulator, and also get details of my popular Feed Formulation Handbook.

And I have since had buyers from all across Nigeria (no exaggeration) who today are friends on Facebook, and speak with me on phone like we’re old friends. Some have been subscribers to my mailing list for over 5 years.

That’s not all. I have also had buyers from outside Nigeria – like Tanzania, and as far as Canada…who also NEVER asked for a demo!

All of these people took the decision to buy from me without getting (or even asking for) a demo of the app.

Indeed, many have NEVER met with me in the flesh till this very moment.

One such buyer who simply did a bank transfer online to my account, is a Nigerian based in Saudi Arabia, who owns a Feed Mill and Farm in a Northern State in Nigeria.

He was in Nigeria for a few days, came across my Ration Formulator’s Youtube video, and simply wrote me an email asking for payment details.

I sent him the details, and less than an hour later, I got an email alert announcing the transfer from him!

So many have happened like that.

And after the payment, they ALL got the product (via email), and we discussed further via phone, email etc.

Incidentally, in recent times, I’ve even had some buyers send additional payment, to cover the extra expense of having me send the products physically to them via courier (Fedex and DHL, so far) on CD/DVD.

After getting the products, some of them have requested that I help them find reliable hands to hire to manager their farms, or locate suppliers of bags for feed, or laboratories where feed ingredient analyses can be done etc.

I share the above details to indicate to the reader that I aim to build LASTING RELATIONSHIPS with my buyers.

So, when this prospective buyer said the video demo for my Poultry Farm Manager was not enough to take a decision, I knew he belonged to a minority.

However, because I’d gotten an impression that he was sincere, I decided to come up with an offer to help MORE people like him take the leap of faith to buy.

And that new offer is what I now end this article with.

If you, or anyone you know, are thinking of getting my Poultry Farm Manager app, this offer is one you want to take up – while it lasts.

Starting today, I offer a FREE (customized) copy of the mini version of the Poultry Farm Manager app, to any Farm CEO who makes payment for 1, 2 and 3 listed below:

1. My Feed Formulation Handbook (N8k)

2. My ExcelVB driven Ration Formulator Software (N12.5k) View 2013 upgrade version here

3. One year of web hosting/domain registration (N7.5k) – view my webhosting service website here.

NB: Using item 3, I will build – at zero cost – a 5 page powerful Joomla based website for the CEO’s farm. This website will be specially designed to be updateable by even a web novice. And I’ll send the CEO a PDF userguide on how to manage/update the site as well.

Adding 1 to 3 gives N28k (Twenty Eight Thousand Naira)

That means, all an interested Farm CEO has to do is pay N28k, to me, and s/he’ll get the mini version of my Poultry Farm Manager (N25k value) as a 100% FREE bonus, in addition to 1, 2 and 3 outlined above.

And I will provide zero cost support in addition to supplying a detailed PDF user guide.

Note however, that this offer is only open to real life farm owners…NOT to persons “planning” to start, but persons ALREADY running their own farm businesses.

A Powerful Tool for Solving Your Website’s RSS Feed Problem (Based on a True Story)

When I posted my video based blog last Thursday, no RSS feeds appeared for it on my Facebook wall. But I assumed it was a glitch from the RSS syndication service I use. When it happened again the next day, I knew it was time to be concerned! This article explains how I spent 2 hours investigating and eventually rectifying the problem.

RSS feeds can be powerful tools for driving (actually “PULLING”) traffic to your website

That is, if they are properly setup and used.

And also if you churn out content that’s perceived as useful by your target audience.

I estimate that mine have always brought me over 80% of my website traffic. When you publish a blog post, and within seconds you see the number of views rise, it’s often due to people subscribed to your RSS feeds.

They see your published feeds much more readily than others. But you will rarely know who they are, except for those who choose to signup to your mailing list.

A growing number of people today want to avoid adding to the avalanche of e-mails they get. So they prefer to use RSS feeds to decide who to follow and what to read.

Smart website owners realize that maintaining valid RSS feeds is crucial to their ability to PULL traffic in…

This is why they always check that their RSS feeds are working.

In my case, every now and then I click the link to my Feed burner managed RSS link, and watch to ascertain it loads correctly.

The screenshot below shows what it normally looks like.

In my case, every now and then I click the link to my Feed burner managed RSS link, and watch to ascertain it loads correctly.
In my case, every now and then I click the link to my Feed burner managed RSS link, and watch to ascertain it loads correctly.

But even if I did not click on the RSS link, another readier way I can check is by watching my feeds on Facebook.

Having setup my RSS feeds to appear on my Facebook profile each time I post a new blog, all I have to do is check that the preview for that new post appears on my wall.

The screenshot below shows an example.

Having setup my RSS feeds to appear on my Facebook profile each time I post a new blog, all I have to do is check that the preview for that new post appears on my wall.
Having setup my RSS feeds to appear on my Facebook profile each time I post a new blog, all I have to do is check that the preview for that new post appears on my wall.

Well, last Thursday, that did not happen: Nothing appeared on my wall!

When I noticed that, I shook it off as being due to a possible glitch in the syndication service I use (i.e. RSS Graffiti).

But the next day when I posted another blog, and my wall was again left bare!

At that point I knew there was a problem – and its impact on my posts was immediately obvious.

The one from the day before had recorded less than 5 views. Normally, there would have been at least 20 to 25 views within 24 hours.

Indeed before I lost my 9 year old former domain (spontaneousdevelopment.com), most of my posts would have gotten up to 50 or more views within 24 hours.

These are of course not big numbers, but their fidelity is rarely in question. And I periodically get sales leads that I sometimes convert to sales via this channel – from within and outside Africa too.

That’s why I would say an RSS feed is a reliable indicator of the quality of your web content.

You don’t know them. So they don’t have to worry about you feeling offended if they do not read your stuff.

If it’s good they will click and come over to read.

If it’s not, they’ll ignore it.

Which is why I reckon more with people who have large RSS feeds in partcular – and to some extent those with large mailing lists. Both often have prequalfied prospects (or potential buyers) in there…

As for people who brandish huge website traffic figures, I believe that’s not as useful an index of performance as the aforementioned. And I say this from experience. Traffic regardless of source makes no sense. We want human beings potentially interested in what we offer.

Getting traffic by any means is not an efficient way to get such people. And it can often cost more than it saves or makes for you. My experience based opinion of course :-))

To find out what was wrong, I went to my blog and clicked the RSS link. Sure enough, I got a scary error message.

Here is it (in part):

“Error on line 200 at column 331. Input is not proper UTF8…indicate encoding…”

I did not know what to do. It had never happened to me before. And I had never read about it either.

But I knew I needed to take corrective and timely action fast. So, like the rule on the web says, I began “Googling it!”

I Googled everything I could think of relating to “repairing RSS feeds” (like this and this). All sorts of website articles came up (like this and this). And I also came across nifty Word press plug-ins (like this one) developed to solve a certain kind of RSS feed problem.

As you can imagine, I hungrily read through the various articles sharing tips about how to solve RSS feed problems the author had encountered.

I also watched videos (like this one) created by website owners who managed to find solutions to their own RSS feed problem version.

But none of the solutions I found online worked for me. Not a single one!

At this point I began to get a bit scared.

I felt like someone who’d been told by a doctor that there was no cure for the ailment he’d been diagnosed with.

But something told me to keep searching. So I Googled some more.

That was when an article appeared in which the author recommended using the popular RSS Feed Validation service, to check what exactly the problem with my feed was.

I’d used that service 2 years back, in checking that my RSS feed was valid.

But I never knew it could be used to TRACE the cause of an invalid feed.

So, this turned out to be a useful learning experience for me!

Within a few seconds of getting to the Feed Validation Service website, I’d generated a report that yellow-highlighted the HTML content in EACH of the blog posts featured in my RSS feed.

And it indicated what line numbers the invalid entries were on.

If you’re familiar with Word press, you know that when editing a post in TEXT mode, you can see the HTML code for the content in it.

If you’re familiar with Word press, you know that when editing a post in TEXT mode, you can see the HTML code for the content in it.

So, all you have to do is search for the offending bit(s) of code (identified by the Feed Validation Service) in each post, and either modify, or delete it.

Then save that post, and click to view the RSS feed again. If you’ve removed all invalid ones, the feed will display normally.

Also, clicking “Check” on the Feed Validation button for your RSS feed will generate a new results page with this message:

Congratulations! This is a valid RSS feed.”

Hope you found it useful.

And if you have any questions, do let me know what they are, in the comments.

I wish you well!

PS: The Feed Validation also noted some minor improvements I could make by removing items that could impede “interoperability with the widest range of feed readers”. I’m already working on that.

Many People Who Should Write Are NOT Writing – and YOU Are Probably One of Them (Read This to Learn Why) – Part 2 of 2

Who better to tell you what it feels like(or takes) to survive as a start-up entrepreneur, if not someone currently in the struggle – or recently out of it? To get an authentic update on the situation in Nigeria, would you ask someone who travels once-a-year to Lagos on official visits – or would you ask your Aunt who LIVES in Lagos, and visits New York on business every other month?

The foregoing is why I chose to write about my experiences early in my entrepreneurial career, and not wait till I got “up to the very top” before doing so.

I wanted people who needed it to get it raw and undiluted, as I like to say (I also wanted to use my writing to put on record the struggles I passed through, and had to learn to overcome). It’s more useful that way!

NB: This is the second and final part of this article. Click here to read part 1 of this 2 part series.

Incidentally we need not wait until we have succeeded in achieving the goal we pursue before we write for others to learn from us.

For instance a person who never made it to the finals of the Olympic 100m, could use THAT thought to motivate him/herself to draw from his/her “failures” and coach a younger athlete with potential to win the gold.

Taking this further, a person who has “failed” in a bid to achieve a valued life goal could, with a positive mental attitude, articulate a set of learning points about what caused him/her to fail.

And s/he could use them to teach others(one-on-one or through a book or article) about what to do to increase their chances of success.

You do NOT need to wait till you become the Managing Director before sharing useful learnings about how to pursue career advancement that you pick up along the way.

This is because while you are BUSY “climbing”, others coming after you will be in the process of taking the decision to START “climbing”. And compared to you, will be LESS experienced or knowledgeable about what to expect.

Many of them are likely to appreciate hearing from you, up front, some hints about what they will face during their journey. They would also be grateful to learn how you dealt with the challenges that cropped up, plus what you think THEY can do to make good progress.

In my case, I began sharing insights gained from my experiences as an entrepreneur, back in 2002, my startup year – through writing articles and books, and in daily interactions.

Today, I’ve gotten lots of failures and successes under my belt that enrich my writing and speaking even more. And I have HIGH QUALITY tips I can give, based on what I’ve discovered works, and does not work.

I implore you to begin documenting as much of your own experiences as possible. This way, you can also become equipped over time, to share useful learning with others, and make their journey less difficult.

No one person has the duty of teaching others about how to succeed in life.

Every one of us can teach what s/he knows to those who need to know it by writing about it. The best part is that once you’ve written it, you will not need to write it again. All those who want it will only then have to go to the bookstore or website where it is available and get their copy.

I Found Supporting Evidence That “You Need To Write”, In Dr. Spencer Johnson’s Book: “Who Moved My Cheese”!

Now, here’s something interesting…

I got even more convinced that writing as early as possible in my journey was the right thing to do, when I read the little book titled “Who moved my cheese?” written by Dr. Spencer Johnson.

What follows below are insights I gained from reading it, which I believe will benefit you as well…if you keep an open mind that is ;-))

The Book’s Parable About Hem & Haw(2 little people) As Well As Sniff & Scurry(2 Mice)

The book narrates an engaging parable about 4 characters – Sniff and Scurry (2 Mice) and also Hem and Haw (2 little people).

The parable illustrates the various ways different people react to unexpected changes/setbacks that occur in their lives on a daily basis.

The author’s parable admonishes us(readers) to learn to laugh at ourselves, and the mistakes we make in life, (so as to be able to learn from them and “move on” with our lives).

Dr. Johnson uses the analogy of “moving cheese” to illustrate how our circumstances/situations in life will inevitably change.

The moral of the parable is that we all need to be prepared for those changes when (not “if”) eventually they occur. If we’re prepared, and we respond quickly and intelligently to them (instead of protesting and complaining), we will often find that we end up being better off in the long run.

Dr. Johnson takes the reader through a series of scenarios in which the 4 characters employ various methods to deal with the unexpected changes.

The 2 little people – Hem and Haw – unlike the mice, had major problems getting over the setback – and moving on with their lives. Not surprising is it? A typical human reaction.

Hem in particular remained adamant that it was “unfair” for the cheese to have been moved. And he prevailed on Haw (who over time became more disposed to trying to find a way out of the fix they were in) to stay with him till things “returned to normal”. Or at least until “someone gave them an explanation” for moving their cheese.

How familiar does that sound. Don’t we humans have that habit…!!!

Remember! It’s a parable, and if you think back to our lives as humans, you should’t have much problems recalling those occasions when you’ve been a complainer.

Sometime in the past(or possibly even now) you may have been just like Hem – who never saw any good in a change that affected you(in your opinion) “negatively”.

An example of such a change is a lateral movement from your job to another seemingly less glamorous one in your company.

Lest I reproduce the entire book here, I will get straight to the point I wish to make. At a point, Haw decided that since the mice had taken off in search of another cheese almost immediately the initial cheese had moved, he would do the same.

So, he left Hem, (after trying without success to get him to go along), sitting and complaining, and began his search.

“Haw” Starts Writing To Share What He Learns BEFORE He achieves Success

As he journeyed, he made a lot of new discoveries, gaining new and fresh insights that excited him a great deal. In fact, he found the learnings he picked up while trying to find new cheese so profound that he decided to write each learning on the wall(in form of a short phrase).

This was so that anyone who was coming along after him, would benefit from the knowledge he had discovered.

Examples of the phrases he wrote are: “If you do not change, you can become extinct”; “When you move beyond your fear, you feel free”; and “Imagining myself enjoying new cheese even before I find it, leads me to it”.

I have chosen to adopt the method used by Haw, by writing to share my experiences so far, for the benefit of others who might wish to also go into entrepreneuring.

Even before he found new cheese, Haw began to share the little knowledge he was picking up along the way/during the journey. He felt (quite rightly too) that there was no point waiting till he got to the “end” of his journey, and found new cheese, before he shared the little he already knew.

This was because he recognized that he was experiencing useful – though sometimes painful – lessons that could benefit others tremendously, if they knew them before facing similar challenges.

Final Words: Writing About Your Experiences, To Help Others, Will Rarely Be Easy…But It Will Be Worth It

I personally believe that it takes strength of character – and tremendous self belief – to repeatedly make out time to do this. Writing like I propose here involves sharing (sometimes) painful lessons learnt (through writing, and/or speaking), in the pursuit of a challenging goal(s), especially while still working to achieve it(them).

Another lesson we can take away from Dr. Johnson’s book, is that we can each move our own cheese(become “masters of our fate”), instead of waiting for others to do it for us.

Over a decade ago, I chose to “move my own cheese” by leaving the comfort of what should have been a comfortable job in a corporate organization, to follow my longstanding vision of running my own businesses.

I also decided that I wanted to spend much of my time, sharing with others about how to do the things I have achieved in various areas of my past, present and future endeavours.

We need to share information/knowledge and discoveries about life, and how to live it better, with each other.

We need to do so regularly, and with plenty of excitement and passion. Our actions in this regard must be borne out of a genuine desire to enrich the lives of others, and help them get ahead like we are doing.

The result would be a society in which mutually beneficial exchange of information takes place among people in a way that enhances social development, making life more fulfilling for every member.

A society where this happens continually, and spontaneously, would be a very successful one. Many developed countries are already on the path toward attaining this futuristic state.

Developing countries which desire to achieve similar progress, will need to challenge MANY MORE of their members to write MORE OFTEN. This would at some point translate to giving (more) public speeches, conducting seminars, practical workshops, coaching programs.

All of which would be done based on authentic experiences they have had, that when shared could empower others to succeed in pursuit of their life goals.

Here’s the mistake none of us should make. Let us NOT wait for the government, or those in “power” to start this. Let each of us begin to do what s/he can from his/her own corner of influence.

And let us who are like minded and agreed on this course, selflessly work together to do more of it over time.

Sooner than later, those in government will take a cue from us and either get involved or organize similar efforts to consolidate ours!

Many People Who Should Write Are NOT Writing – and YOU Are Probably One of Them (Read This to Learn Why) – Part 1 of 2

For society to develop fully, it MUST encourage members to write – and read – as frequently as possible(especially non-fiction).You can influence society’s progressive evolution, by acquiring qualitative experiences in pursuit of challenging goals, and sharing what you learn with others.

This article explains (in part) why I have written so dedicatedly, since 2002. And it highlights multiple reasons for you to do the same.

Writing is a powerful way to communicate useful knowledge,e acquired through years of experience and sometimes painful effort, by the writer, to others.

Recent feedback from a long time subscriber to my email
Recent feedback from a long time subscriber to my email newsletter.

Many ideas that are used to influence happenings in society are often communicated in written form for others to read and reflect upon. Religious and political organizations send out written material “preaching” the ideals they want their followers to imbibe in order to actualize a vision of the future.

In this article I explain why each one of us needs to look deep within him/herself and discover the unique area of experience based knowledge s/he has, to offer others who lack it, which s/he can then start sharing TODAY by writing.

You may not believe it, but there is something you know, which some others NEED and would therefore be glad to read/learn about. But that’s if you would only write about it!

What would this world have been like if Hill had not written his book: “Think And Grow Rich”?

Think back to all the successful people you know who have mentioned that reading THAT book transformed their lives.

Imagine if they had never read the book, because Hill never wrote it. The implications would have been multiple fold.

Let’s consider a few examples

Maybe today, Dr. Walter Doyles Staples works would not have become a source of education and inspiration for thousands of people worldwide.

Robert Kiyosaki would probably NOT be the person we know today. A man whose message about proper education of children, and the need for a reform of our traditional educational system, opened the eyes of many parents to what they can do to help their kids succeed in life.

These powerful influencers noted that they read, and were influenced by Think and Grow Rich, while starting out!

That book helped them make the most of their own experiences, so that they were able to achieve their own purpose in life.

Coming closer home…

Without Wole Soyinka’a writing, I am almost convinced that I would not know as much as I do about aspects of Nigeria’s history. Especially events that occurred around the early years of Nigeria’s independence – including the civil war – that most of my peers seem disconnected from. Same applies to Chinua Achebe’s writing.

Many others exist on this part of the divide. And they have all enriched the lives of millions by choosing to write based on their experiences.

My point is that when people who undergo useful/authentic experiences (or who make contact with those who do so), write in order to share their acquired knowledge with others, significant positive social development can quite often take place as a result.

This will happen especially if those who read the written works, actually take action to diligently apply the knowledge they acquire from doing so in their personal lives.

You Too, Can Change Lives Through Your Writing…!

By writing, we give others the opportunity to embark, more intelligently, and therefore with greater chances of success, on doing something we(or persons we closely studied) have also done in the past and/or are still doing. Anyone who has applied honest and diligent effort to a particular cause, can write competently about what s/he has done in a way that can benefit others who wish to pursue a similar goal.

While we are on the subject, here’s something noteworthy…

Millions of parents worldwide have bought books by Robert Kiyosaki, and followed his advice about how to educate kids/prepare them to achieve financial independence.

And they continue to do this even though Robert clearly stated in the books that he and his wife(Kim) had no kids of their own!

To me, the ONLY logical explanation for what should have been an unreasonable action on the part of the parents is this…

They (wisely) chose to look beyond Robert NOT being a parent, to the intuitive and common sense logic of the ideas he presented, which resonated with those they had themselves battled with, during their own childhoods.

That’s why when you read some of the re-printed testimonials in Robert’s bestseller titled “If you want to be rich and happy, don’t go to school?”, you will notice many of those people quoted said things like “That’s what I think”; “puts into words what I have been thinking for a long time” etc.

I wonder if they would have ever done anything about what they were “thinking”, IF someone like Robert had not written it all in a book by himself?

Again, back to the questions with which I started this article: What if Robert had never chosen to write any of his books?

One thing at least is certain: our thinking about how children should be educated and prepared to pursue success in life as independent adults, would be worse off than it is now.

That is the value that Robert’s writing has added to millions of lives the world over – mine inclusive(the distance between our continents of residence notwithstanding).

Many People Who Should Write Are NOT Writing

In many societies, people undergo unique experiences of all kinds, every day, that those around them may never have the opportunity of going through.

For each person, the learning acquired through those experiences literally shapes who they become over time. And that ultimately determines whether or not – or better still how well – they succeed.

We can each draw upon the knowledge and insight acquired through such experiences, to teach others how to deal with them successfully, should they encounter something similar.

What I have just stated is the reason why I am convinced we can never have too many public speakers in the world.

It is not possible to have too many pastors, or preachers or trainers in the world either.

I speak with regard to the possibility of a situation arising where you end up with many individuals, who do the same thing in exactly the same way EVERY time, so that if you have seen one, you would have seen all the others.

No two public speakers can have exactly the same audience appeal, and effect on people when they speak.

Think about it. If you heard that Zig Ziglar (when he was still alive) was going to speak at an event, your expectation would be different from what you would have, when another speaker’s name is mentioned.

Each one of us has a distinguishing trait or quality that sets him apart from others who do what s/he does.

Another analogy: Not matter how many stand up comedians perform on one show, each ONE of them will always have at least ONE joke that is different from those told by his/her counterparts.

And s/he will also have a peculiar “style of delivery” that is unique to him/her – except of course s/he unwisely chooses to mimic a role model, mentor etc.

If all of the above is true, it then logically follows, that if an individual were to write based on his/her area of competence or experience, there is a possibility that a person looking for such information will find it a useful, if not entertaining, read.

It might help to inform (or remind) you, that even Napoleon Hill was initially plagued with self-doubt, when Andrew Carnegie first asked him to write the book(Think And Grow Rich).

Hill worried among other things that he was not “qualified” or “competent” enough – at the time – to write it.

But thankfully, he eventually brushed those fears aside, and did us all a favour by working hard to write the book that today has changed millions of lives for the better.

No One Needs A Teaching Certificate Or University Degree To Share His/Her Experience-Based Knowledge With Others Who Need It

Consider a person who – through great will power and endurance – survived years of isolation as a prisoner of war. And there have been people like that.

I doubt such a person would ever be required to get a writing degree, or teaching certificate, before s/he could write or speak to audiences about:

(a) what it felt like and

(b) how to survive under such situations

At the least, if you feel you cannot write it yourself, get help to do it!

For instance, engage the services of a freelance professional, who will work with you to produce a worthwhile summary of your experiences in your chosen area of interest or competence.

Having said that, however, I believe that developing your writing skills would not be a bad idea.

That’s because it would enable you do more spontaneous writing, than you could if you needed someone to take notes from you.

The second and concluding part of this post will be published tomorrow.

Why Farm CEOs Need to Read Non-Farm Related Articles (Hint: Like the multidisciplinry articles on THIS blog)

I believe, from over 2 decades of observation/experience, that one major mistake being made by conventional farm support specialists is that they focus mainly – sometimes exclusively – on farm related issues, in serving farm business owners.

This can be self-defeating, because other aspects of the farm owner’s life can – and do! – interfere with his/her ability to make progress with the farm!

Farm CEOs are human beings like the rest of us: they have to balance different aspects of their lives!

That means virtually everything that we have to contend with in life, outside their core vocation is what they most likely also have to deal with.

Most people do not think about it, but many times stuff that happens in other parts of our lives can – and do – affect our ability to function effectively and successfully in our chosen vocations.

Indeed, many of the most successful people in the world get to be that way because they develop strategies to keep firm control of other areas of their lives, so that nothing interferes with their ability to focus on the core purpose they have.

That’s why many top sportspersons have personal managers, and other people they pass their routine chores to. Down to getting their laundry done, these guys readily pay good money to have someone else handle such tasks.

Farm CEOs can also get very busy, and quite often their work may require spending long periods trying to set standards in place, and study trends to take the right decisions. If they have other areas of their lives going out of control, this becomes more difficult to do.

That’s why this blog’s articles categories are multidisciplinary: I like to see the big picture and offer complete solutions

It goes without saying that some visitors to www.tayosolagbade.com will have wondered why I don’t just write ONLY farm business related stuff all over my website.

Well, the above case in point is the major reasons.

My multidisciplinary write-ups are designed to offer potentially useful best practice information and education, on different aspects of life, in a way that enhances people’s ability to succeed.

Those who pay attention will notice I often use farm related explanations in most of the examples I discuss in my articles.

But as with everything else, the lessons offered can be applied or adapted to suit the needs of people in other fields. And they are. Which is why I also get feedback and enquiries from prospects and clients in non-farm related fields.

Below, I discuss each of my blog categories, and how they are relevant to farm business owners, and their workers.

NB: It’s quite likely that many of them who have visited in the past probably never thought of it this way before. So, I guess I should say: “Now you know!”

1. Parenting

With the exception of those yet to have offspring, Farm CEOs typically have spouses and kids they live with. Whatever happens in that home can – and does – affect the farmer’s state of mind.

Kids in particular, can be a challenge for any adult. I say this as a father of 4 boys and 2 girls. And I also say it as one who has had to endure years of being unable to independently provide for them – while struggling to establish myself as an entrepreneur in Nigeria.

Parenting has little to do with how financially well off you are. After all we know of many people who are financially successful today, whose parent(s) raised them while battling crippling poverty.

However, the training instilled in the kids by the parent(s) helped them develop the character needed to later achieve financial success in life.

The story of Ben Carson, the famed American Neurosurgeon in his book – “Gifted Hands” – describes an excellent example of what I call World Class Parenting – by his mother.

My articles are experience based.I draw from what I went through in my childhood years, as a very naught teenager, before I reformed myself. And I add to that what I did to coach other people’s kids to achieve excellence in my early adulthood.

Lastly, there’s the VERY challenging experience I’m, having currently as a parent to 2 teenage boys, and their siblings.

Some of those who have read my articles on parenting have commented on how useful they found them. Several of my articles have been syndicated on parenting websites outside Africa – in the USA for example. I believe that’s a sign that there’s value to be had in them.

As a farm CEO, with kids, these articles are for you to study, in order to do a better job of parenting your kids. Make use of them.

2. Career Development

I have noted in the past that a growing number of Farm CEOs purchasing my products are persons who hold day jobs. A good number actually work with large companies (e.g. oil service multinationals), and run their farm businesses on the side.

They often use the salary they earn – and/or loans or grants from their employers – to finance their farm businesses. It goes without saying therefore, that their continued good performance at work is crucial to the long term survival of the farm.

Of course, at some point, with good management, the farm business is bound to become self-sustaining. However, depending on the kind of enterprise it is (e.g. poultry layers, broiler, piggery etc), some need for the security of “extra income” to meet periodic shortages may remain for a while.

And even if that’s not the case, discussions with some such farm CEOs suggest they are planning to keep running their farms on the side till retirement – which is not due for 5 or more years.

I have a track record of high performing success from my 7 year stay in a world class multinational. I started as process manager, and later become a people manager  – competently holding senior management positions.

What’s more, I received exposure to a wide variety of high profile training on best practice performance improvement and people coaching in the workplace. All of this equips me to help others.

So, Farm CEOs pursuing careers during the day can really benefit from reading my Career Development write-ups.

Many of them have been extensively syndicated online. Some got me invited to speak in places like the Centre for Management Development, while others have been published – with my permission – in international journals.

3. Entrepreneurship

I have written severally in the past about the need for farm CEOs to realize that they need to think like entrepreneurs, if they want to succeed – indeed excel.

My ideas have gotten me invited to speak to audiences at events like Yaba College or Technology’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development.

That’s apart from many which have been republished across the web, since I began using article marketing in 2005.

With Farm CEOs, I have hammered on the need to develop competent sales and marketing know how. Too many of them still thing traditionally. They focus on producing and then start waiting for buyers to come. If you want the best prices, and you want to make timely sales, so as to maximize your farm output capacity, this is an aspect you cannot ignore.

My articles on entrepreneurship can help you.

4. Writing/Blogging

If you’ve been reading my writing for a while, you will know that I have repeatedly stated that farm CEOs need to adopt writing as a strategy for “farm business promotion”. Apart from being zero cost, more or less, it also helps them develop marketing credibility and ultimately achieve authority status.

Why is this important you ask?

Well, we are not all equally ambitious. But why come to the match if you don’t intend to give it your best shot? I argue that farm CEOs should aim to generate income via multiple channels – including those NOT directly related to farm product sales.

How? Well, sell your expertise as a Farm Business Expert. You are effectively already a consultant, by virtue of your being a farm CEO!

Get started by WRITING regularly, to share your experiences. Use a blog – at the least.

Don’t stay on paper – you’ll achieve less reach and impact. Tell readers about successes and failures and what you did to get there. As your writing evolves, package yourself to offer solutions to those aspiring to do what you do, or others who have begun, but need help.

E.g. business plan preparation, farm start-up consultations, feasibility studies, farm personnel training. You could write manuals to help others who come to you – they would pay – gladly too.

Because you already have a farm, they are likely to take you seriously. And when you ask them to pay, they will.

I say this as someone who still has not started a farm business, and yet get farm CEOs from within and outside Africa sending me payment for products and services I offer them.

5. Public Speaking

And lastly, people may wonder what concerns Farm CEOs with public speaking. Some may even ask how a farmer can possibly expect to be a speaker.

Well, I argue that if tie-wearing agriculture experts, who only lecture and do not run their own farms, can get paid to address audiences of farmers on farm business, then Farm CEOs can do the same too.

The thing is that too many people fail to think outside the box. Should farm owners, with the right training and preparation, not be able to SPEAK to audiences about what they do. Should they not be able to SHARE their experiences with researchers and farmers from other parts?

Think about it. Some farmers are making smart improvements in the way they run their businesses that others could benefit from.A Farm CEO who can prepare, package, promote and present his/her ideas attractively CAN get invited – as a paid speaker – to international conferences, to share his/her story.

You can plan to do it locally, and also internationally, making intelligent use of the web. And this can open doors to finding better (and bulk) buyers for your farm products in the process.

This is why I offer articles on public speaking. Read them and apply what you learn.

6. Self-Development

The study of 1 to 5 above will more or less be an exercise in self-development.

But it goes beyond that. Your physical, mental and emotional fitness also need attention. Regular physical exercise, along with diligent investment in leisure to eliminate stress is crucial to keep yourself going. You cannot afford to let yourself break down.

So many of my articles on Self-Development have been widely read and republished. You would do well to study them.

Final Words: As you can see, Farm CEOs will find some of the above useful at various times in life.

As with everything else, you may not have career concerns today, but a parenting challenge could be on your mind as you drive to your farm.

If you’re lucky, browsing through the parenting articles archives on this blog may turn up something useful (try it now).

Some other day, you may have received an invitation to deliver a talk on Poultry Farming to students in a university…..and you may be wondering how to go about it. The archives section of my Public Speaking IDEAS newsletter may come in handy.

In other words, I am saying that if you’re a farm CEO, virtually all the major products and services on tayosolagbade.com are created with YOU in mind. (No offence to my other clients in various industries, but farm businesses are my primary target audience.)

So, even when you see an article title that does not relate with farming, REMEMBER that you are first and foremost a human being. And you well being, your state of mind, will have an impact, directly or indirectly on your ability to run your farm business competently.

As such, anything that can affect you inn that regard needs to be carefully nurtured. This is why feeding yourself with useful tips, and information, to take care of those areas of your life would be a wise thing to do.

The Secret to Getting Things Done, Even When Busy (3 Tips on Smarter Self-Management for CEOs, Top Managers/Executives & Others)

Some CEOs, top managers or executives get so busy they suffer exhaustion. I make no claims to being perfect, but NO JOB I’ve done in paid employment, or as an entrepreneur, has EVER overwhelmed me. Indeed, despite being often accused of doing too many things, I – very frequently – get it ALL done on time!

I share my “secret”(?) in this article :-)

It was so when I worked in Guinness Nigeria: Yet I outperformed, and got promoted over, those who criticized me…!

And it has been so, since I became an entrepreneur. Yet I have often DELIVERED to deadlines on most projects I’ve taken on – WITHOUT needing to stop my own personal activities.

As you read this, I have 2 new client projects I’m working on: It so happens that out here in Cotonou (in addition to clients in Nigeria), I recently won 2 additional client companies.

These 2 opportunities did not come my way by accident. As the saying goes, success leaves a trail.

You see, last year, a legal consultant – who happens to be a director with the above  mentioned private university – hired me to build an elaborate Web Marketing System based website for him.

He  (along with his founding partner who also saw the finished work I did for him) took the decision to hire me to handle the university’s website project.

If I had not impressed them last year, I doubt they would have done that.

That’s not all.

Even the second client company is a result of a referral from the same person!

He is the CEO of the start-up outfit, and again decided he wanted me to handle it.

What’s more, he had no qualms making FULL payment for both projects, to me, 100% upfront!

If that’s not proof of unshakeable confidence in my abilities, I don’t know what else to call it!

The reason my client was so confident in hiring and paying me upfront to start 2 projects (and he’s NOT the only one who’s done so), is that he’s seen me do SO MANY different things at the same time, and NEVER get overwhelmed.

Not that I’m perfect, or a magician.

It’s just that we all have our strengths. Mine happens to be multi-tasking. I am a VERY quick learner, and very early on in life, I trained myself to be a quick thinker.

Then, by leveraging my physical fitness training from over a decade of playing competitive handball, I have enhanced my ability to push myself to deliver superlative work performances literally at will.

Let me try and paint a picture of my typical work week:

Every week I write at least ONE 500 to 2,000 word article per day, which I publish on this blog, each day. Sometimes I customize my Excel-VB Ration Formulator and my Feed Formulation Handbook for a client who orders it.

On certain occasions I may have a meeting with an offline client that requires being away from my work for 4 or more hours. On some days, sometimes consecutive, I have to respond to email enquiries that require a lot of thought, and sometimes a “presentation” page or two.

At other times I may be working on a website project or two (like right now). During the same week, I could travel to/from Nigeria, and still NOT miss publishing ANY articles while on the road!

Then of course I always find time to post marketing material and connect with others on social media. Those efforts on social media periodically yield sales leads that sometimes convert to actual sales.

Here’s a true story that illustrates my point: During a 2 month period late last year, I had to travel and conduct questionnaire surveys in Nigeria

It was for a 4,000 word agribusiness case study paper that I wrote and got paid 2,500 Euros for, by a European Union funded NGO based in Holland.

I wrote that paper and sent it in within the deadline. Then I had to re-write it to address feedback sent me by the reviewers, until it was accepted for publication. Yet, I NEVER stopped writing my daily article, weekly newsletter or any other tasks, all through that time.

Even when I’m feeling dead tired at 11:45 p.m, if I know I need to get an article out before midnight, or that I need to send out a list of names extracted from 89 questionnaires to a client, I NEVER stop until I achieve that goal.

That’s the power of smart self-management!

I could go on, but you get the drift!

How do I do all that and NOT get overwhelmed or exhausted?

The truth is that it’s not at that moment that I do what enables me deliver such performances.

I often do most of what helps me Go The Extra Mile (GTEM) ™ like that, WAY before then…

Indeed, some of the personal routines and “rituals” I engage in early in the morning, and all through the day before, often end up being what enable me succeed like I do, much later on.

That’s why, rather than feel tired, I start each new day rearing to go, and I NEVER need special drinks or medication.

The Problem: Many CEOs/top decision makers, by nature of their roles/responsibilities, cannot avoid being busy…

They often have so many people demanding their time and attention. And when those people depart (say after close of work) they frequently find themselves faced with mountains of paper work they have to plough through.

Most of it can rarely be done absent-mindedly, as doing so could result in potentially costly errors.

So, the tired top man or woman begins to give up some hours sleep, and at a point gives in to the need to depend on Coffee – or some other “helper” – to keep going.

The next day, the lack of sleep, and use of caffeine based drinks leaves the CEO feeling a bit dull on the way to work. To overcome that feeling, and get into the mood for work, s/he may reach for some other “helper” e.g. an energy drink, and is soon feeling ”better”.

But if truth be told, the body will NOT be denied what it needs

No matter how strong or tough you are, and no matter how refined the stuff you ingest is, the truth is that ANYTHING that prevents the human body from getting the proper rest it needs is BAD for it.

It will just be a matter of time before the body takes its revenge on the owner who abuses it that way!

That’s when we hear of the boss landing in hospital from exhaustion, or a mild illness graduating into something that requires him/her to stay away from work for prolonged periods.

But how can one avoid – or overcome – this scary problem?

The solution is to adopt a disciplined NATURAL approach to self-managed performance delivery.

What does this entail?

Simple really. Here are basic steps I recommend, based on what I have done for over 2 decades, in the course of delivering high performing work related output:

First:

Adopt a daily routine of simple, but intense 10 to 30 minutes of physical exercise FIRST thing in the morning.

Combine that with eating strictly natural foods eating all day. Cut down on the fancy fast food stuff!

Add to that, an uncompromising commitment to giving your body SLEEP whenever it asks for it.

Second:

Adopt the smart use of PC and Internet technology to make your personal and work life easier.

Either you commit to learning how to use them to get more work done, as creatively as possible, or you get someone who knows how to become your personal work assistant.

Whatever you decide, the objective will be to REDUCE the hours your spend doing anything routine and repetitive or mundane – especially paper work.

Three:

Make an investment in developing personal productivity skills like Speed Reading, Brain Training, and use of Mind Mapping.

This can boost your ability to think and get work done as much as 4 times over. I do NOT exaggerate.

Many times I have had to explain to others reading on a PC screen along with me, why I’d scrolled to the next page when they were not even half way down.

Busy people at top decision making levels often have to read a lot of documents, which require good comprehension, before action can be taken.

Those who are slow readers suffer a lot because of this. An investment in learning speed reading can make a world of difference to their productivity.

Clients are often shocked at how quickly I consume material they give me, and turn around to creatively use it generating website copy/content for them!

That’s because I am a speed reader. Become one, and you’ll COMPETENTLY get through any pile of papers in record time, compared to how you do now!

And for those who have to remember a lot of things…!

For instance, instructions they’ve given to subordinates, what they promised their kids or spouses, things they want to check online or on the company premises:

Mind Maps can be VERY useful. Especially when combined with what I call “Planned Activity Tracking Sheets”.

The above are key tools and strategies I use in an ever changing series of combinations to continually deliver a high level of performances, without letting my health suffer.

It is because of them that I am ALWAYS able to honour invitations to social events, without suffering any negative effects in my work afterwards.

They are also why I am consistently able to make out time to plan and implement all sorts of coaching exercises for my kids.

Very rarely do I visit home, even when it is for work, without getting them started on something new and exciting that I’ve found out.

And I also rarely fail to check their progress with past projects, pushing them to move to the next level.

Final Words: It is crucial that we maintain a healthy balance in our personal and work lives!
