Your Ability to Speak Another International Language Can Break Barriers For You [True Story]

Today, I visited the embassy of a Francophone African country on Victoria Island to make certain inquiries.

Right from the gate, I made a point of speaking ONLY French and in as formal a manner as possible.

For those who have been following my writing for some time, you most likely to know the story of how I learnt to speak, read and write the French language(click here to read it in a new window) .

I did so by taking an intensive 3 month course in 1999, while working shifts as a 29 year old shift brewer in Guinness Nigeria’s Benin Brewery in Edo State’s Benin City.

Then (with the help of my Cameroonian teacher (Valentine – who has since returned to Douala), I visited and lived in/moved around Douala, Yaoundé, Oballa, Mendong and other parts of Cameroon over a 3 week period.- during that same year (1999) during my annual leave.

Most entertaining to look back on, today, for me, however remains the part of my story about how I had to return to Nigeria (and my job in Guinness), penniless by boat under heavy rainfall!

TIP: I wrote the book, shown below, based on my learning experiences

Proven 5 Step Formula For Learning ANY Language In 3 Months (or Less)!
=========================================

But back to the story about my latest visit to the embassy.

Determined to ensure I did not get turned back or given the stiff diplomatic treatment that can sometimes be meted out, I put my hard won ability to speak French to use.

And it got me the results I wanted – up to a point.

Each officer that attended to me promptly referred me onward to the next. I eventually got to a senior official, who on speaking with me, promptly stated that that the fee required to get the document I wanted was the country’s currency’s equivalent of N6, 500.0.(Nigerian Naira).

Wasting no time, he instructed his assistant to give me the application form to fill, and to collect a copy of my passport photograph.

Then he left us and went upstairs.

Motioning for me to sit down, the lady pushed the form across to the table, while speaking to two colleagues about work and their activities during the past weekend.

By the time I read through the form however, I knew I had come to a point I was not likely to be able to move beyond!

It was (of course) written in French.

But that was not the problem.

Instead it was a question towards the end of the form that asked how long I had been in Nigeria and how much longer I planned to stay in the country.

Since I was a Nigerian, I knew that the form was NOT meant for me – and filling it would be a dishonest thing for me to do, since I would effectively be pretending.

The fact that they had offered it to me however indicated that they assumed that I was a citizen of their country.- and (since I had yet to give them my name.- which would have been an instant give-away) they most likely got that impression from the way I’d spoken the language.

At this point I looked at the lady and told her “Look, I won’t be able to fill this form – because I’m actually a Nigerian”

“Vraiment?” (Translation: Really?) She and her colleague exclaimed in surprise,

But how come you speak French so well?” she queried.

I replied by explaining (as I did earlier in this piece) how I’d learnt the language.

She responded by noting that her boss had obviously concluded I was THEIR citizen visiting Nigeria for a period, but added that since I was actually Nigerian it was unlikely that I’d be able to get the document I wanted, issued by them.

Despite saying that, she however still encouraged me to wait for him to return, so I could ask him directly.

While we waited, she and her colleagues chatted with me about the exchange rate between both countries, and possible alternative options I could pursue in the event that I got turned away.

Not long after, their boss descended the stairs, greeted a Nigerian lady who’d just arrived on appointment, and had been referred to the upper floor, before heading to his office.

Following his assistant’s que, I followed him into his office, and announced to him that my Nigerian nationality meant I could not use the form he’d referred to me.

The usual exclamation of surprise followed in which he said “Really? You’re a Nigerian? But where did you learn to speak French so well?”

After I’d supplied the usual answers, he told me I would have to get the document I wanted issued to me from the Nigerian end, and NOT from theirs.

I’d half expected this would be the case, but felt the best way to find out would be to try.

And now I had.

But even though I’d failed to get the document, I took consolation in the knowledge that I’d come away better informed about where to go and what to do,

What’s more I’d made new friends and created a positive impression that I believe can pave the way for me to see the BIG man upstairs, in the next visit I plan to pay them!

Starting tomorrow, I’ll visit the office I’ve been told will issue the document I need to me. If all goes the way they’ve told me it currently does, I should get it in 3 working days.

My key purpose for sharing this story is to SHOW the reader how being able to speak another language can equip you to progress towards your goal beyond what you (or others) would normally have been able to achieve, without that ability.

I will add that I have successfully gotten access to people and places (in French speaking societies) that would have been otherwise impossible to reach, simply by DEMONSTRATING my proficiency in the use of French, while travelling across different West African nations.

Initially stiff – even hostile – encounters with government officials or even private individuals have often dissolved into very friendly exchanges, some of which now evolved into lasting friendships.

All because I was able to speak the language of the other person(s)!

You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose by learning to speak another language.

In my case, I have a vision to deliver solutions I offer to people fitting my target audience profile across the African continent – starting from West Africa.

And Francophone West Africa, being French speaking, makes it imperative that I develop and demonstrate my proficiency of the use of the French language, to inspire them to be more willing to connect with me.

Let your decision about what language to learn be informed by the goals you need to achieve and where you need to achieve them.

PII 088: To Succeed, an Entrepreneur Needs to Know Some Friends and Relatives May NOT Be On Her Side

I state truths that many will find uncomfortable in this piece. But they need to be said, because they are based on realities of life.

Bob Marley, the late Reggae music legend saw enough of it, to sing about it in his song “Who the cap fit”. So I know I’m in good company as I take the plunge to write this 😉

marley-worst-enemy

Let me begin by stating a bias that I have developed based on personal observations and experiences over the past 14 years, as follows:

To get along – and remain on good terms – with most friends and relatives, I would suggest that you DO NOT BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR.

Now, before I explain why I hold that opinion, I must ask you to note that owning a business enterprise will NOT necessarily make you an AUTHENTIC entrepreneur.

There are specific distinguishing attributes that set a real entrepreneur apart from the crowd of others that people may see in society.

Quite often an authentic entrepreneur would be one who makes a habit of straying from the established path or traditional ways of doing things.

S/he would be the one to fearlessly venture BEYOND the realms of the familiar to break new ground and test new ideas way outside what others consider sane or possible.

You know those kinds of people who try to do what no one has ever done before – and who refuse to let others, no matter how wise their counsel, tell them it’s IMPOSSIBLE.

Yes. Entrepreneurs are dreamers – and they are typically willing to go out on a limb, to put everything they own on the line, to pursue and achieve their dreams, even when NOT assured of success!

Since the larger majority of people in society tend not to be so willing to think and act as crazy as described above, most authentic entrepreneurs may tend to find themselves regarded as crazy or odd.

And so even though they would love to have people around most “normal” people would carefully avoid staying too long around them. As a result they would tend to be alone – at least until they achieve the inevitable breakthrough that makes them “famous” or successful. Then suddenly, in typical predictable human fashion, most people would suddenly want to be associated with them!

However, it’s the period before they arrive at “successville” that this article refers to, in discussing the kinds of people an entrepreneur needs to exercise caution in relating with

Failure to do so could cause him/her to get easily sabotage by people with ulterior motives – some of who could be close friends and relatives!

Yep. I say this without apology: Some so called friends/relatives can play roles that amount to sabotage in the life of an entrepreneur they claim to “love” or care for.

marley-worst-enemy1

I once read an article by an entrepreneur who in describing his startup experiences stated that after trying without success to get him to change his mind and venture into some other area they considered to offer more realistic chances of success, some close relatives “folded their hands and watched, waiting for him to fail”.

In other words, rather than give him the help he needed, they chose to leave him hanging. And what did he want? It was that they purchase equity in his business, or loan him money. Luckily he found willing others, who were more or less total strangers but who saw the potential in his business idea.

This happens more than most people realize. Relatives can be the most critical and unforgiving of those an entrepreneur may have to deal with. Especially when you are yet to achieve a sustainable breakthrough.

Under certain circumstances, in certain cultures, one could actually be right to assume that some friends/relatives could pose a DANGER to an entrepreneur’s ability to succeed (or keep succeeding)…

Those who fall into this category have the tendency to believe that being close to you, makes them an authority on what you can or cannot do.

You see, our close friends/relatives will often be the ones who SEE us when we fall, fail, make mistakes, have setback etc.

Quite often some of them will be the ones who help us get back on our feet – or at the least they will be witnesses to the PROCESS we went through, to find our feet again.

Now, until we hit it big and achieve that crucial breakthrough into the big leagues, so long as we’re still not up there, people like that can develop what amounts to a SUPERIORITY complex of sorts.

Lacking the insights to understand that the failure we experience are TEACHING us how to succeed, many of them typically sit back in their armchairs passing comments and judgments about how they “warned” so and so, but s/he would not listen.

Then when you achieve some notable success, they conveniently pretend not to hear about it, and so do not pas THAT bit of news to the fan club they’ve been talking about you to.

Why? Because if they did, then it would look like they did not know what they were talking about earlier when they criticized you to them!

And that’s what makes these kinds of people potentially dangerous!

What I have learned from YEARS of personal experience as well as careful study and observation, is that even your so called close friend or relative can feel threatened by your success if, for instance, s/he believes it will make him/her lose face!

So, if/when s/he finds him/herself in a position to play a role that can determine if you achieve THAT major breakthrough, to success that you’ve announced you’re capable of (and which s/he has told everyone you’re not up to), s/he could choose to BLOCK it.

A relative you do not see eye to eye with during family gatherings, and who you make a point of calling out for bad behavi0ur, could insist to others that your disposition to him/her implies you would not be able to relate well with clients. And based on that justification would discourage them from buying into the business you wish to start – arguing that your customer relations would be lacking to keep clients.

That of course does NOT follow – but people like that who secretly have an axe to grind with you, would latch on to any opportunity to pass judgment on you in that manner.

Beware of The Ones Who Pretend to Believe!

marley-worst-enemy2

I prefer people who let you know what they think, to those who hide their true feelings just to take advantage of you.

Most times you would never get to hear what they did. But every once in a while, you would meet get wind of what they said through an innocent third party, that was present, but who may  not even know you’re related to the person they heard it from – and that YOU were the subject of the discussion!

Some people are skilled in pretending to be on “your side” – so they can fool you into letting them come close and gain access to inside information about what you’re doing, and how you’re getting on.

Then they take that information obtained via privileged access to you, and go sharing it with others that you’re not as close to – using it to get bragging rights.

However, they never speak on your behalf – and actually share the negative views about you, or your chosen path, that are held by the others – only they do not say so to YOUR FACE!

If you have a friend or relative like that, you’ll have to work hard to unmask him/her!

Such people are called “Anchorless Social Chameleons” in the bestseller titled “Emotional Intelligence”.

There is a real danger that you may not discover you have an Anchorless Social Chameleon in your inner circle, until you’ve been dealt a painful “blow” of sorts by such two-faced or duplicitous individuals!

I recall the story told to me by the relative of a diplomat I once worked with. He explain that a cousin of his, who was a niece to the man, had gotten admission to study overseas in a US university.

They had run around to get the needed funds and when they needed a passport, had naturally reached out to this diplomat relative to help with THAT.

To their amazement, he not only failed to help process the application, but actually SAT on all the documents claiming he’d misplaced them, offering no alternative for them to pursue, UNTIL the time for submission elapsed.

The girl’s mother never forgave the man. It might interest you to know that this person had BOTH his own kids already schooling/working abroad – so it was not that it was a new experience for him. Like the young man who told me the story, that was the reason for the bad blood I’d asked him about that I noticed between the man and his less well-to-do sister (the girl’s mother).

Except you’re psychic, it’s impossible to know if a particular person(s) harbor(s) ill feelings towards you e.g. what they say when you’re not there i.e. behind your back.

It goes without saying though that NOT ALL friends/relatives will be like this.

Of course not!

The challenge will however be for you to LEARN how to identify those who can be TRUSTED and to what extent EACH can be trusted.

Life can be so complex and confusing sometimes. Why can’t things be so simpler? Why do human beings have to be some difficult to predict.

Well, I’ve asked myself those questions so many times over the years as I dealt with the backlash of gossip, innuendo, even vicious backstabbing from those I least expected it: close friends and relatives.

And I’ve come to the conclusion: You’d have to become GOD to fully answer those questions!

So I’ve learned instead to keep my own counsel, guarding myself and my vision as I pursue achievement of my valued life goals.

But whenever the opportunity presents itself, I do not hesitate to give direct feedback to any persons I find guilty of acting without integrity in relating with me – along the lines discussed in this article.

That is the best one can do – as life cannot be lived without these potentially negative experiences. Truth be told, they ultimately build us up, forcing us to grow and mature in ways we would otherwise probably NOT have done.

Here’s wishing you good luck as you continue in your pursuit of success, while learning to handle relatives who may play roles that test your limits and/or your patience!

[RECOMMENDED] DIY Africa: Empowering a new Sierra Leone – Kelvin Doe, Self-Taught Engineering Teenage Whiz From Sierra Leone, Wows MIT Experts (VIDEO) – As seen on CNN, HuffingtonPost, Wikipedia etc

In this special edition of my RECOMMENDED blog post series, I feature previews from high profile news reports about a young African’s amazing achievements – from when he was 13 years old – of using 100% self-taught engineering skills to innovate and invent PRACTICAL solutions to everyday problems in his own community.

His accomplishments have since led him to set records of all kinds – including becoming the “youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT” at age 15 – and meeting globally known public figures like the President of Harvard University – and even Hilary Clinton!

Below, I offer a menu of excerpts ending with links to the full reports

1. “Kelvin Doe, now 16, became the youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT, according to CNN….MIT discovered Doe during Innovate Salone, a national high school innovation challengeheld in Sierra Leone by an international organization called Global Minimum. Doctoral student David Sengeh recognized his skills right away.

2. “Kelvin Doe (born 26 October 1996 in Freetown), also known as DJ Focus, is a Sierra Leonean engineer. He is known for teaching himself engineering at the age of 13 and building his own radio station in Sierra Leone, where he plays music and broadcasts news under the name “DJ Focus.” He was one of the finalists in GMin’s Innovate Salone idea competition, in which Doe built a generator from scrap metals. Doe would constantly use discarded pieces of scrap to build transmitters, generators, and batteries, as well.[1][2]

3. (CNN) — When Kelvin Doe, a then-13-year-old from Sierra Leone, saw that off-the-shelf batteries were too expensive for the inventions he was working on, he made his own at home. Kelvin did not have the privilege to do his project in a school environment. Rather, he was compelled to act by necessity and for the joy of solving practical problems. Kelvin combined acid, soda, and metal, dumped those ingredients in a tin cup, waited for the mixture to dry and wrapped tape around the cup to make his first battery. He failed several times before completing a final, working prototype. He hasn’t purchased a battery since.

4. [Maker Faire] Mention Africa and many of us westerners immediately conjure up images of war, famine, and genocide. But Sierra Leone’s 16-year-old Kelvin Doe is conjuring up something something altogether different.

Kelvin, AKA DJ Focus, helped create a DIY youth radio station made from discarded consumer electronics salvaged from local garbage bins. He designed his own generator to power the station’s amplifier and other components. The station’s 12-volt generator is made from a home-made battery which in turn is  charged by broken DVD players. In his spare time, Kelvin DJs at kids’ birthday parties.

===Start of Transcript Excerpts====

Hi there, this is Tayo Solagbade and it’s about 4.54a.m. I’m recording this special update just to announce some slight modifications to the way I’ll be providing my solutions to everybody in my network.

Now please note that what I’m about to say here applies to you whether you’re already a client or whether you’re just a subscriber in my network, or maybe you’re just on my contacts list and I sent it to you.

But in the email I would have spelt out the same terms I’m about to describe in this audio, and it’s just designed to let everybody be on the same page.

Starting from Monday, the 9th of October 2017, I will be launching a new system for sending out offers to people in my network. And this will be a blanket system. In other words I will NOT be making special concessions to ANY particular groups of people anymore.

Instead I’m going to just be giving a blanket system of offers to make what I used to call “Crazy Promos”…there will no longer be called “crazy promos.

Instead I’m going to just have promos, because like I said I’ve tested all kinds of things this year, and what I’ve learned is that at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you should make your offers with integrity, but at the same time make them to have as much of a human face as possible.

Incidentally, it was some of you who told me this – who requested for this and asked, “Oh why can’t you make it a bit longer. These are short” and all of that. And what I found out over the years, from experts that I studied in developing my model, is that it’s always a smart thing to test. If people tell you they want “this”, TEST it! Don’t just be (like some clients used to tell me I was…lol) “rigid”.

So I said, OK – they say I’m rigid, let me see – just how flexible can I be, that they will be able to take it up…

So, I tried being flexible, and I noticed that the more flexible I tried to be, not everybody would respond to the effort being made to be flexible.

Some people still, there was always something!

So I said OK, the African and Nigerian environment is peculiar. People have challenges they are facing that are not normal. Because they are not like Americans, where everybody has their credit cards and you can just be charging their credit cards, every month, like some of my Oyinbo mentors that I’ve studied.

Some people are dealing with price changes of maize every week. So when they are talking about subscribing to your offer – when they say YES last week, by this week, they’ll say “Ol boy that YES don turn to MAYBE” lol!

And so I said to myself, that I have to find out something. that will be convenient for everybody and that would be FAIR! But I realized in the process of trying to do that, testing all kinds of approaches, practically with each person, especially those people who were already my clients and I felt I knew them and that it would be unfair not to give the guy a chance. I found out that there could be a varying degree of commitment even after you’d made these modifications.

So, eventually what I’ve come to is the conclusion that a person who really wants something (and that’s something I’ve actually always known), if he wants something badly enough, he’ll find away to get it.

All you have to do it to be fair in how you make the offer. Once you’ve done that, then your own part is played and it’s left to the person to decide.

And so, long story short, what I’m announcing to all of you is:

Starting Monday (9th October 2017), there will not be any crazy promos. They will just be FLASH PROMOS – which are promos that are (tightly) time limited.

So, the time limit can be in 3 forms.

The first form or first dealing will be 24 hours

That price will be crazy but I will not call it a crazy promo.

It’s just going to be at a flash promo price. You take it up in 24hours you get that price. You go beyond 24 hours, you’re going to have to deal with DOUBLE that price which will be applicable for 24 hours.

Then after that it goes back to (for instance if the thing was supposed to be ) N100k and I gave it to you at N5k, then you would actually have to pay N10k if you missed the 24 hour deadline, and then after the 48 hour deadline, you would have to pay the N100k…or comot eye lol!

Now, it’s important to note, that what I’m talking about here, there are no exceptions to it.

It does not matter if you’re a member of my Farm Business Ideas club or Web Marketing for CEOs club or whether you’re just a subscriber or you’re a member of my Inner Circle. It won’t matter.

(Not) even if you’re a member of Club Zero – because (unlike how I initially started it) I have revised the terms of Club Zero to be SPECIFICALLY for farm business owners.

The reason is this:

I would say that about 80% of my clients are Farm CEOs!

So those are the people that helped my brand to be what it is today, and it is for those people that I offer Club Zero – PRIMARILY.

It took me time, but I eventually decided that THAT was how I wanted it to be.

So anything outside Farm Business Support Solutions would NOT be a Club Zero thing. Therefore you won’t be able to get it at a zero price.

[RECOMMENDED] Why online courses are trending

This report highlights a reality that people are coming to accept all over the world – including Africa – about the increasing popularity of online courses amongst people seeking tertiary level education. As tuition fees keep rising, those who cannot afford them are embracing the use of remote learning web based resources that a growing number of institutions now offer.

Why online courses are trending

Hundreds of university students in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa and other African countries took to the streets last year to protest against high tuition fees, lack of equal access to education and inferior learning environments at their learning institutions. The clashes, which disrupted the universities’ academic calendars, highlighted the harsh conditions students face on the continent.

To put it into perspective, only about 6% of young people in sub-Saharan Africa are enrolled in higher education institutions, according to a 2015 report by the Africa-America Institute (AAI), a US-based organization that seeks to foster relations between Africa and the United States through higher education.

PII 085: Succeed by Doing Things Differently and Better

Life is destined to be a story of achievement in spite of adversity, not in the absence of adversity; for without adversity, achievement could not exist…. Smile at adversity and act quickly to eliminate it. Expect adversity, for it shall surely appear. Be grateful for adversity for it forces the human spirit to grow – for surely the human character is formed not in the absence of difficulty but in our response to difficulty. All things, even adversity, have their worthy purpose.” – Jim Rohn

I defy adversity.

By that statement I mean that I have made REFUSAL to give in to difficulty, hardships, delays, disappointments or setbacks MY way of life.

Indeed, you could even call it my personal motto!

In the rest of this piece, I explain, using my experience based achievements, why I believe it pays to make DEFYING ADVERSITY a way of life, and how doing things differently and better can help you successfully defy adversity to succeed – repeatedly.

Before I begin, let me make it clear that I NEVER compare myself with others – neither do I seek to compete with anyone.

Instead, as my popular article on the same theme explains, I focus on competing against myself.

Read: Compete ONLY Against Yourself & Enjoy the Benefits of Being a Truly Liberated Mind

In sharing my ideas here, therefore, I want YOU – the reader – to understand that when I say “doing things different and better”, i refer to my ability to IMPROVE on what I do/did, over time.

In other words, I’m saying that I have a keen drive and passion to pursue continuous improvement of myself in what I do, so that at any point in time I am able to evolve newer, better and therefore  (even if minutely) different ways of doing what I do, in a manner that benefits my target audience.

And if you’re going to use the ideas I offer here, I recommend you adopt a similar disposition.

Having provided the above clarification, I discuss below, 2 examples of how to succeed by doing things differently and better – based on what I do…

  1. Creating and Delivering Your Products/Services

When people order your product, what is the experience that they come away with, or the feeling they have after interacting with you to purchase it?

Do they end up thinking they’ve been had? Or do they feel their money has been well spent – and/or even express interest in buying more from you?

My primary focus is always to make every buyer feel s/he has gotten more value than s/he paid for. And that mindset is one that constantly drives me to think up new and different ways to give value to each buyer that will make him/her feel that way.

This is why most buyers of my multidisciplinary range of products and services EACH rarely have the same buying experience, as I AM constantly offering new variants for them to choose from.

As a result, 2 people may buy my Excel-VB Ration Formulator software in a month, but end up getting special discount (or even FREE) bonuses on top of the standard offers they ordered, via time limited promos.

I’ve done this with great success countless times, and it has often endeared me to many of my buyers, because they usually get stuff they want at MUCH lower fees than my standard pricing would have allowed them to.

Since I DO NOT offer other people’s products for sale, and often create my own products, including those to be given free or for a low fee as bonuses, it goes without saying that my buyers end up with something that cannot be had elsewhere.

In addition, since I generally insist on interviewing most prospective buyers before I sell to them, I am able to gain good insights into what they are likely to need or appreciate. And that consequently influences what offers of extras or bonuses I make to them.

The result of this strategy has been that many times I end up selling other solutions to my buyers, that they would otherwise not have purchased – and earn more in the process

So, how does my habit of defying adversity help me with creating and delivering products and services?

It’s simple really.

That mentality equips me to CONTINUE creating and delivering solutions that add value to my clients, no matter how hard things get or how slow progress may seem to be!

Now THAT is NOT as easy to do as it is to say, I can tell you!

Many people simply do NOT have the mental toughness (what I call MENTAL STAMINA) to keep creating and innovating when adversity knocks and it shows in the way they act during tough times.

Those periods when things fail to go as planned e.g.  When they fail – repeatedly – to make sales and money does NOT come into their hands, pockets or bank accounts!

Instead of “steeling” themselves, and digging in to create and innovate with more intensity, based on intelligent analysis of potential opportunities in the seemingly unresponsive marketplace, they withdraw and adopt a WAIT and SEE attitude .

I’ve seen many people do this countless times. It’s almost as if they’re challenging “life” to give them a break they consider worthwhile before they put in extra effort. Some even speak as if to give “God” an ultimatum to show them a sign by IMPROVING their circumstances BEFORE they feel it’s worthwhile to put in more effort!

Little do they know that exactly the opposite mental attitude is what they need to adopt, IF they really want to succeed in spite of adversity!

Their attitude towards adversity shows in results they get = LITTLE sustainable progress.

Those who respond to adversity by INTELLIGENTLY doing more, in defiance of it often tend to achieve breakthroughs that others rave about.

Proof of this is apparent from the testimonies of many successful people who have readily attributed their success to those periods when they had to overcome exposure to prolonged and potentially traumatizing periods of adversity, to succeed.

The quote by Jim Rohn about how to deal with adversity, that I began this writeup with,  perfectly sums up the benefits to be had from persisting in the face of adversity

TIP: Scroll up and read it again – so it can sink fully into your consciousness 😉

  1. Handling Customer Complaints

Nobody is perfect, and it is impossible to maintain a 100% success rate indefinitely.

Every once in a while, something(s) will go wrong. You can aspire to perfection, BUT it will be a continuous endeavor.

What matters is how you deal with the experience when it happens. How do you respond to buyers who tell you they are not happy with their purchase?

I’ve experienced that with both my products and services in various markets.

The last thing you want to do is react negatively.

For me, it’s always been easy to NOT reach negatively, because I put my heart and soul into creating, testing and delivering the solutions I sell.

As a result, I am usually reasonably confident that when complaints come, it will often be something I can clarify for the buyer, and NOT require me to do any rework.

Over 90% of the time, THAT has been the case with most of the complaints I’ve gotten from my buyers.

However, when the problem has indeed been found to be from my end, I’ve always gone out of my way to ensure the client never feels s/he made a wrong buying decision.

As a result I’ve often won the respect and trust of the complaining client – who in some cases even return to make other purchases from me, over time.

Regarding doing things differently and better, I constantly reflect on every client complaint I get, and diligently try to outdo myself in terms of how I handle future occurrences.

In addition, I use the feedback from the client coupled with the insights gained from handling the complaint, to improve on the product and/or service.

So, even though customer complaints may not come with a selling opportunity, I choose to use my attitude of defying adversity to turn the experience into a positive one for both myself and the buyer.

And sometimes doing so has actually led me to make additional sales – like I noted earlier.

In summary, therefore, what I’m saying is that people just need to be sure you CARE enough to make sure they get value for their money.

Once they see that, they will buy more readily from you.

Succeeding in spite of adversity can be painfully hard and potentially traumatizing, but it can be done. One just needs to study, understand and abide by the universally applicable principles established in nature for us by the Creator.

What I’ve found from my experiences and observations over the past 2 decades as an adult working – initially – in paid and later in self-employment, is that many people miss this truth, and go running after rewards to be had, without doing the needed studying, understanding and abiding!

PII 084: To Excel, Go Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

Succeeding in spite of adversity can be painfully hard and potentially traumatizing, but it can be done. One just needs to study, understand and abide by the universally applicable principles established in nature for us by the Creator.

What I’ve found from my experiences and observations over the past 2 decades as an adult working – initially – in paid and later in self-employment, is that many people miss this truth, and go running after rewards to be had, without doing the needed studying, understanding and abiding!

What I say here applies to ANY area of endeavour, no matter what it is you do.

Let me begin by stating, at the risk of sounding immodest, that I’ve routinely and repetitively defied various degrees of adversity to excel by following this rule in everything I have done, since I discovered it.

So the ideas I share here are based on real life achievements I’ve gotten under my belt. I KNOW what it takes, and am able to do it again and again, to achieve the results I want.

But I did not get to this level of proficiency overnight. It took time, and lots of hard work.

Initially I did most of it unconsciously, and then as I became a keen student of success philosophies, I honed my ability to do it consciously and at will.

My studies of success philosophies opened my eyes to the need to GIVE MORE than the average person does, if I want to reap more than others do.

It’s simple common sense isn’t it? Of course it is!

Yet one continues to see so many people who LIVE their lives doing the exact opposite and wondering why they never seem to achieve sustainable LONG TERM progress in their chosen fields of Endeavour.

Note here that the progress I refer to may be slow, but it will be measurable and it will be sustainable. You will KNOW that you’re experience it, and it will be clear, to you especially (others may be blind to it due to bias) that you are NOT retrogressing

So why do people want to get more without giving enough or more?

I argue that it’s what they learn from society as they grow up and live their daily lives.

Today, we live in an instant gratification world, where people indulge their impatient cravings by taking advantage of the PC and Internet technology driven conveniences available to be had.

This is why some employees show up at work and do the barest minimum specified in their job descriptions ALL year round, and STILL expect an end of year bonus in their pay slips.

Then when they do not get the bonus (some even demand a promotion based on how long they’ve been “there”!), they scream that they’ve been denied what it rightfully theirs.

That leaves the employer wondering if the employee is so afflicted by his/her entitlement mentality that s/he does not realize the company needs tangible contributions that go beyond the call of duty, to boost productivity and profits that can trigger bonuses and other rewards.

Now, some big companies that can afford it typically hand out some kind of fixed bonuses or increments at the year end. But that is the exception and not the norm.

Even in “rich” companies than can afford to dash out bonuses and extras, those who do more tend to get MORE than those who do not stretch themselves beyond the minimum.

Exceptional workplace contributions that boost the organization’s bottom line are what typically earn an employee such extra rewards.

It’s the same for those in the world of business, or self-employment: You need to add tangible value to get paid

Indeed, for this latter situation, the opportunities to get without giving enough or more are fewer, unlike the case of employee.

For the entrepreneur, when operating in a market where little or no corner cutting (like bribe giving or taking) is possible, the ability to go above and beyond the call of duty can become a most valuable asset for setting yourself apart from the competition.

The reason is simply because, just as it is with employees, people in business come from the society, and if society encourages them to give little to get a lot, they will display those traits in doing business with themselves and others.

The above understanding was what led me to focus on serving clients solutions I knew I had FANATICAL passion for providing

The need to do so became apparent to me after a few years as a startup entrepreneur in Nigeria’s Lagos.

My experiences made me realize even decision makers in organizations I was approaching seemed more interested something other than finding the best consultant to help the company they worked for!

So, I made up my mind that if I was to work with ANY client company, they would find me so resourceful and driven by relentless passion to go above and beyond the call of duty, to deliver what I promise, that they would not only give me repeat business (i.e. call me to do more), but also refer others.

And THAT has been my experience over the years.

This strategy I adopted is why I am able to boast, today, of client relationships lasting 7 years and longer – in a wide variety of markets starting from 2005/6 when I began to get a firm grip of what to offer.

Nothing beats being able to go above and beyond the call of duty to serve clients who VALUE and RESPECT you for what you do for them.

It goes without saying that I’ve had to weed out some bad “eggs” from my client list every now and then. Client attrition is a HEALTHY thing.

But my client recruitment process involves use of a series of screening systems that minimizes the need for me to do this often, as I tend to end up with people who are generally a good fit for me.

Once that happens, I know I it’s less likely that I’ll be wasting my time going above and beyond the call of duty to serve them.

Even if I provide the solution for FREE or at very low cost, I NEVER lose, because it’s my passion, and therefore always fun for me.

BUT…here’s the best – indeed my NUMBER ONE – reason for habitually going above and beyond the call of duty as a way of life:

This is my secret reason for doing this with so much relish…!

You see, routinely Going The Extra Mile (aka Going Above & Beyond The Call OF Duty) helps me GROW continually in my knowledge, skills and abilities, so that at any point in time, I am ALWAYS evolving into a smarter, stronger and more competent expert and person.

This makes me better prepared to serve EVEN more people than are already in my network. And all of that happens while I’m having fun doing what I LOVE!

See what I mean?

You simply cannot LOSE if you do this right:

I KNOW how to do it right – wand I’ve shared it in this piece (Need more? Click here to send me a message).

Start going above and beyond the call of duty, in anything you do, and you will enjoy the reward of being able to succeed in spite of (or defy!) adversity, in any form it may occur, and no matter how long it lasts,

Most people in the UK do not go to university – and maybe never will

Data suggests that the majority of the UK population will never go to university, finds Charlie Ball.

Almost everyone goes to university nowadays, everyone knows that.

Except that not everyone does and we rarely see accurate statistics about how many or what proportion of people actually do. It’s quite an important question, bound up with thorny issues of workforce skills, educational aspiration and, of course, how (and how much) the UK taxpayer funds our domestic higher education sector.
