The Secret to Making Research/Science Careers More Appealing to Black Students

Last night, Chima Ejiofor posted a cheering link on my Facebook wall with a query ( screenshot below). It was for a BBC interview granted by the renowned Prof. Geoff Palmer (OBE) – which brought back memories from my 7 year career journey in Guinness Nigeria (1994 to 2001).

Chima is of course right in assuming that I would know Palmer.

No one who claims to have been active for any reasonable period in the brewing industry during the past 3 decades can claim NOT to know Prof. Palmer!

His pioneering research work on the potentials inherent in Sorghum for instance, provided a useful foundation for companies like Guinness to respond to the Nigerian government’s ban on importation of Malted Barley back in the ‘90s.

Many brewery trials were done till they successfully developed a system for brewing international quality beer using 100% local raw materials i.e Maize & Sorghum. It was a significant achievement at the time, because Maize and Sorghum had historically been regarded as inferior ingredients in the international brewing industry. They had before then only been used sparingly, as “adjuncts” to complement the Malted Barley.

It was an exciting time to be in the company back then. I learned a lot that I apply TODAY, in helping farm businesses develop Best Practice systems to boost performance.

I have even written several articles documenting some of those lessons. Click here to read a recent one posted last year (2014).

But, here’s what really triggered my writing THIS article…

[NB: I discuss what follows below, with specific focus on Prof. Palmer’s on-going efforts in collaboration with others, to raise the interest of young blacks in becoming scientists, like him.]

You see, after reading the story Chima shared on my wall, my curiosity made me Google for more news about Prof. Palmer.

That was when I came across a September 2010 Guardian interview (read here) he granted.

It was however an anecdote shared by Palmer himself, in that Guardian story that really got me thinking…because it EXPOSED a weakness in conventional schooling systems that Robert Kiyosaki (whose work has GREATLY influenced me) has been WARNING parents about for years.

In my view, Palmer’s response to that comment about his “salary” is unlikely to convince most of today’s young black kids – anywhere in the world – to follow in his footsteps.

It’s true. One cannot argue with his achievements – and the many honours they have earned him.

However, the reality about what today’s world demands, stares kids in the face much earlier in life, than it did those who were kids some decades ago.

They learn much MORE quickly that money makes the world go round – and they see proof of that daily (I know I don’t need to give you examples, I’m sure)!

Kiyosaki said that as a kid, he never liked the fact that his parents never had enough money…and he always wondered why that was so – eventually asking. When his real Dad could not tell him why, he went looking to his friend’s Dad, who had LESS schooling but seemed to know how to make MORE money.

It took him time, but he eventually compared the views of both Dads and decided to LISTEN more to the man he later called Rich Dad in his book.

The problem we have today, as indicated in the comment made by the young boy about Prof. Palmer’s salary – compared to Rio Ferdinand’s earnings as a footballer – is that the life of a researcher effectively promises less security on the financial front.

When Palmer responded that despite not being wealthy, his scientific achievements had earned him “respect”, I believe he missed an opportunity to see things from the perspective of the kids.

What do kids see on TV and in society?

They see people who make a lot of money getting the most attention and recognition…and even respect, from the larger society – including heads of state (Read: Michael Jackson, Pele, Tu Face Idibia etc)..

Robert Kiyosaki wrote that his top educationist father, a presidential award recipient, struggled financially and that money (or the lack of it) was often at the centre of most fights between his parents.

Many people can relate to that from their own childhood, and as parents today!

The above is why I believe that the best way to “entice” or “attract” young blacks to become career scientists, will be to SHOW them that ways exist to get around what they may see as THAT major deal breaker i.e the possibility of significantly LESS monetary rewards.

Ideally, high profile black professionals excelling in scientific fields (like Palmer) would probably be best placed to DEMONSTRATE this via their own lives.

They could – for instance – read and apply recommendations by Robert Kiyosaki about Minding Your Own Business i.e. using MONEY you earn from the profession you are engaged in, to intelligently acquire and GROW Cash Flow Generating Assets, in your spare time, till you become a Cash Flow millionaire – who will keep making more money, long after s/he is retired…without needing to work.

Specific details will be found in Robert Kiyosak’s books, like Rich Dad Poor Dad, Why A Students Work for C Students and B Students Work for the Government, and others. [Full disclosure: I refer to these books because the results I get convince me the ideas they teach work. I do NOT get paid for this. In fact, Mr. Kiyosaki most likely does NOT know I exist!]

Today, in most societies, it does not matter how much you know, or how well recognized you are. If you don’t have ENOUGH money, life (and people!) may not to be so gentle with you.

In other words, you will NOT feel happy or fulfilled IF you lack money to do what you want to do.

Some people like to rationalize when it comes to this, but the fact remains that even the Creator wants us to be rich, because that way we are best able to GLORIFY him!

Our kids today are VERY uncompromising when it comes to choosing careers based on monetary rewards. That is why influencing them requires that we LEARN how to make enough money, and then SHOW them how to do same.

As one who is successfully applying Kiyosaki’s recommendations in my life, I share what I read from his books with as many people as will listen, all the time…

You MUST develop your financial intelligence, and use it to HOLD ON to money you make/earn…and also to make that MONEY work for you, by bringing MORE money into your pockets or bank accounts – without your needing to do more work.

That is the core of Robert Kiyosaki’s message. And he says – correctly too – that what he recommends can be successfully done by anyone, in or out of paid employment.

He also argues that today EVERYONE who wants financial security needs to do it. This is because with very few exceptions, most people will NOT save enough to be able to stop working when they retire from paid employment.

Indeed, if the signs of the economic times are anything to go by (as per welfare systems, and pension packages across the world), many people may retire and find themselves unsure of having enough money to spend in their retirement.

Kiyosaki explains that adopting his recommended approach can help anyone build his/her own financial fortunes, even while in paid employment, to achieve a secure financial future.

To make the idea of becoming scientists command the serious attention and interest of today’s young blacks, we MUST prove to them it CAN give them ALL THEY NEED to be HAPPY.

Being happy ultimately requires having enough of everything you need, to be able to do what you want, when you want, and how you want.

Achieving the above state of being, will often directly or indirectly depend on one’s financial situation i.e. whether or not you have enough money. People cling to poorly paying jobs today, because they want to feel secure that the little they earn from there WILL be available to meet their needs.

But they desire more at the same time, and if sure they will NOT lose, will take up any alternatives that offer more money.

Young people naturally feel the same way as adults, regarding the above. Little wonder their thoughts often readily touch on issues relating to “salary” and money, when they are considering career options!

Unlike the past, in today’s information age, rapid technology based developments make it possible for even 5 year olds to own businesses that make millions.

I once watched an edition of Oprah Winfrey’s show around 2004, in which she interviewed several child (some under 10) millionaires about how they developed their talents and ideas to into big money making ventures – even while still in early stages of schooling.

That was about a decade ago. It goes without saying that more is possible for such kids today!

The point therefore is this: Today’s child may NOT need many YEARS to find prosperity – especially if s/he is helped to discover and nurture his/her God-given genius early in life.

The reality is that most of today’s kids already know this (see sports/entertainment industries)!

Therefore, if we want today’s kids to LISTEN to the suggestion that they follow what their peers may regard as a less appealing career path, we must SHOW them doing so would be worth their while.

Telling them they will earn respect and honours is unlikely to convince many young blacks in today’s world.

You need to develop a solution/formula based on what Kiyosaki recommends.

Then let the kids SEE/MEET someone they admire LIVING well, based on use of that solution (e.g. a “researcher” earning much more than his/her “salary”, via EXTRA passive income – that lasts a lifetime – from cash flow generating assets that s/he continually GROWS in his spare time).

Once you do that, convincing them to follow in the footsteps of that person, will NOT be as much of a hard sell as it currently appears to be, when compared to proven alternatives!

PS: Everything I’ve said here is NOT to detract from the stellar achievements recorded by Prof. Palmer, or the great humanitarian work he’s gotten a lot of recognition for.

My purpose here is simply to offer what I hope will be considered a potentially useful perspective regarding the efforts to “excite black students” about careers in science, as mentioned in the Guardian article I read.

Simply put, THINGS will go wrong a lot, for you, before they eventually begin to go right (Except you cut corners, in which case your success would NOT be authentic)!

Yep. “The Process of Succeeding Is Messy”. That’s not just MY opinion. It’s a statement of FACT acknowledged by authentically successful people worldwide! You WILL make mistakes, look foolish, get laughed at, lack money and more – on the way to YOUR success.

Simply put, THINGS will go wrong a lot, for you, before they eventually begin to go right (Except you cut corners, in which case your success would NOT be authentic)!

But why does succeeding have to be so messy? [Case Study 1: Richard Branson]

It’s because succeeding is a learning process.

It’s not a one-off thing. You don’t just decide to – and become – successful at anything: at least NOT when you want exceptional, ABOVE AVERAGE, non-corner cutting success.

Sadly, many people fail to LOOK beyond the outer appearance of successful people they admire. As a result, they miss valuable opportunities to discover the CIRCUMSTANCES under which they succeeded.

For instance, we see Richard Branson, and LOVE the wonderful brands he represents: But many of us have not bothered to find out what his journey to success was like.

How many of us know that being Dyslexic, he found it difficult to succeed in conventional schooling, and eventually dropped out when he could not take it anymore?

That happened when he was just 15 years of age. He NEVER went back to school after that.

Instead, what he did was to start a micro business, buying and selling things…

However, that journey was also NOT a straight line. Many failures were recorded. Each time he fell, he dusted himself off, and went right back – in what must have been a messy process.

Yet he kept at it.

Today, he is a billionaire business owner – and boss to MANY who did well in conventional school!

But few of us KNOW what it really feels like to fail in the many ways Richard Branson has all these years. Even fewer understand what failing repeatedly has TAUGHT him about succeeding!

By reading up on, and studying Mr. Branson (and other successful people), I have learned a lot about what it takes to succeed.

Here’s one FACT: Those messy encounters and experiences he had, combined to make him the seemingly unstoppable success machine we know him to be today!

In other words, what I discovered to be common to virtually all successful people is that there was a time when they got MORE wrong, than they got right.

During that period, there was little to be admired about their efforts. But they knew enough to keep going, learning from the messy failures they had, and using what they learned to try again more intelligently – till success came.

The process of succeeding is necessarily messy [Case Study 2: Analogy using two popular action movie heroes]

If Arnold Schwarzenegger as Terminator, or Sylvester Stallone as Rambo, did not get bruised and battered, in beating bad guys, their movies would not be so interesting – would they?

Think about it. Why do people connect so deeply with those characters?

It’s not that they NEVER face adversity or fall/get wounded…NO!

Instead, it’s because they defy adversity in whatever form it comes to them…and go on to achieve their goals e.g. saving lives etc.

Human beings love people who can turn bad circumstances around for the better.

When the bad guys tried to take down Rambo, he came back with a vengeance.

Sometimes, it “looks” like the bad guys have actually succeeded in “killing” the hero.

But the hero, with his/her never-say-die attitude (what Burt Dubin calls “Bulldog blood”) digs deep and draws inspiration from his/her REASON for doing what s/he does.

Eventually, that helps him/her find the needed extra reserve of physical and/or mental energy to get right back up, and take the fight to the bad guys again…until s/he wins.

Let’s leave the movies, and come back to YOU…

As an expert in your field, if you want to excel at what you do, YOU need to choose challenging GOALS and go after them, no matter what, until you succeed.

Sadly, many people today do NOT want to get “dirty”, talk less of emerging at any point in the course of trying to achieve their goals, looking “bruised”.

Unfortunately, life’s reward systems designed by the Creator, do NOT work like that. You must be willing to VENTURE!

For instance, if you want to make more money, by selling more of your products or services, you need to develop your skills in Marketing & Sales.

Among other things you will need to LEARN how to go out and TALK to the RIGHT people, and to DEAL with rejection by NOT taking it personally.

In other words, you must develop the ability to BOLDY promote solutions you offer to those you IDENTIFY to need it, in a way that makes them gladly decide to buy.

When they say NO (and some will), that will be rejection.

The truth is rejection WILL happen often, and in sometimes embarrassing ways.

That’s why many people dread having to “sell”. It’s also why many competent experts struggle to find buyers for the products and services they offer.

But get this: If you go out to “sell” and end up meeting a LOT of people who say NO (some being nasty in doing it), that’s equivalent to an action movie hero emerging “bruised and bloodied” from an encounter with the “bad guys”.

However, whether you go on to succeed like a true hero, will depend on how much you let the “messy” state of affairs you find yourself in AFFECT you, as you pursue your success!

If you dwell on what others say…especially if/when they mock you, and let it demoralize you, chances are good that you WILL end up quitting.

Now, if that happens it will not be anything new. Most people are experts at quitting or giving up. You would NOT be the first or the last.

But imagine if Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator” was selling stuff, what would he say to rejection?

I’m willing to bet it would be: “I’ll be back!

That attitude is what makes a person achieve exceptional success others LOVE to talk about!

Have you noticed that the story of a person who kept going till s/he achieved success, despite facing massive odds, is one that people find interesting?

The story of the person who quit rarely excites anyone – for obvious reasons!

This is why some of the greatest stories in the world are those about people who succeeded in spite of exposure to great suffering and prolonged adversity e.g. South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, Nigeria’s Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and America’s Abraham Lincoln.

The above is why anytime I face rejection. I never let it get me down, or make me scared to try again. Instead I simply silently say: “I’ll be back!

The success I enjoy today is proof that this works.

While being messy, the journey to authentic success can also get lonely [Case Study 3: Glenn Cunningham]

So, if you want success, don’t expect others to be with you all the way. You may have to go it alone at some point – and that’s when it can get even messier!

The amazing story of an 8 year old boy who, despite getting badly burned in a fire (leading Doctors to tell his mother he would NEVER walk again)…went on to become the first human being to run the mile under 4 minutes!

That story graphically illustrates what I mean by saying “The Process of Succeeding is Messy!”

Glenn Cunningham for weeks and months, in a lonely environment, with no crowds to cheer him on, dragged himself, on the ground in the fields, with his limbs hanging useless behind him, until he managed to begin walking.

Imagine what Glenn Cunningham must have looked like every time he did that? Dirty, soiled clothes and body? Imagine how many stares of pity he must have had to ignore, to keep doing it again, and again and again.

Remember: he was doing it when no one believed it could help him.

So, it was not like he announced it on Facebook, and everybody clicked LIKE, giving him some moral support.

He was ALL alone. Only when he eventually succeeded, and went on to WIN, did he get the applause. By then however, he had so mastered the whole process that he made it look EASY, and he certainly did NOT look pitiful!

Final Words: If you don’t want to get dirty, don’t expect to reap lasting success!

I decided to write this piece because today I see too many people who want to succeed, without getting “dirty”.

I mean that literally and figuratively…

If you want to ALWAYS look “in control”, or “cool, calm and collected”, you are very unlikely to achieve exceptional success.

Learning precedes competence. To achieve success, you must be prepared to experience failure (i.e. you will make mistakes, fall, and get dirty), and use that to improve, till you succeed.

So, don’t fool yourself – and do NOT let anyone fool you…

You simply cannot get a FREE ride in a fancy car, on the way to authentic, non-corner cutting, exceptional success: if you want success, be prepared to get dirty!

In this article, I explain how you can get a FREE personalized copy emailed to you.

Since sending the promised copies to subscribers/clients who helped complete my questionnaire survey for the 2013 paper, I have periodically given out personalized copies of the FREE (PC screen viewing ONLY) version of it to Farm CEOs who contact me.

I do this to share my findings with them – and also to BUILD relationships that enable me stay connected with real practicing farm CEOs.

I began doing the above, following the experience had in the course of preparing the paper…

I recall being asked to supply detailed information about the farm owner data I used (including their contact details).

Luckily for me, I had elaborate details on EACH of my Farm CEO clients because they had all used my website contact form to reach out to me before buying…and I had downloaded their submitted data for preparing their PDF invoices.

But the fact that those details were requested, woke me up to the realization that the credibility of my paper depended on how REAL those I claimed to have sold my app to turned out to be.

As you may have guessed, since I got paid, that did NOT turn out to be a problem.

However, that experience made me setup a system to verify the status of every enquirer or buyer I take on…

It is for this reason that today, when a new prospect reaches out to me online, asking about buying any of my solutions, the first thing I do is request that s/he give me a date and time I (and mobile phone number if s/he sends a direct email, and does NOT use the contact form).

This is so that I can call him/her to ask a few questions. I make it clear that ONLY after I have asked my questions, and gotten the answers I need, will I be willing to respond to his/her enquiries about my product price, payment options etc.

I do this even with international enquirers.

As you can imagine, this approach is rather counter intuitive, since my business purpose is to make sales…!

However, the experience I had with above mentioned NGO made me realize it was important to establish the identity, and other key details about each person that reaches out to me.

That way, I will be able to speak more intelligently, and accurately, about the results I am getting.

Interestingly, I estimated that 7 times out of 10, the enquiries have gone on to buy from me, AFTER we’re done talking – and I’ve emailed them my responses to their enquiries.

In fact, what I have noticed is that my insistence on calling them, even when I know it will cost me, and I’m not sure they will buy,. actually inspires more confidence about doing business with me in their minds.

One of the things I make clear to them is that my calling at my own expense is NOT designed to put them under pressure to buy.

Instead I tell them I do it to be sure who I’m talking to, what s/he does by way of farming (or what s/he plans to do etc), how long s/he has been doing it, what size of operation etc.

Apart from getting those details, the way s/he responds to those questions also gives me a good idea of how familiar s/he is with the business. And that helps me in responding to the enquiry, especially in giving suggestions and advice on what to buy etc.

For instance, when I ask if s/he asked for the price for my Ration Formulator software, I would ask during my call, if s/he has a sound understanding of the science of feed formulation and practical compounding.

If s/he says NO, or does not come across as sure, I go on to recommend that s/he consider buying the Feed Formulation Handbook to go with the software – so that s/he can LEARN the needed theoretical principles that guide formulation of performance boosting rations for his/her animals.

Today, I have Farm CEO buyers of my apps who I called at my own expense in places like the Philippines, Tanzania, Uganda, Mexico, London and many MANY states across Nigeria.

It is for this reason that I have now decided to routinely request ANY willing Farm CEOs (whether or not you are a buyer), to help complete the same questionnaire survey I used for the research study.

This is so I can continue reviewing the data, to gain deeper and more potentially useful insights into the trends.

But one thing to note here that is that getting the results you want WILL be plenty of hard work – and ONLY YOU will determine how fast and well you learn.

In other words, you must demonstrate the commitment to learn by doing the numerous exercises you will be assigned.

You will be required to manage your learning i.e. do the exercises you are given and spend as much time as prescribed (or more) practicing what you learn.

3 Things You Must Do to Succeed in ANY Area of Life (Advice from Thomas Edison)

“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile in life are first, hard work, second stick-to-itiveness, and third, common sense” – Thomas Alva Edison (1847 – 1931), Inventor

Many people will read Edison’s words above, and readily claim they understand the quote. In fact, some will even recite those words in a bid to teach or mentor others.

However, my experiences and observations of hundred of people – in different societies – over 2 decades in and out of paid employment, convince me that VERY few people actually APPLY the wisdom of Edison’s quoted words in their daily lives.

How do I know?

I know because I am a student of human behavior, with regard to personal success achievement.

One thing that remains of never ending interest to me is why people SEE the truth about what they need to do to succeed, and yet continue doing things that are bound to deny them the success they claim to seek.

Look around at those you know, who have told you the valued goals they want to achieve in life.

Study them carefully, in terms of their daily actions and habits.

How many of them are applying anything close to the 3 simple rules spelt out by Edison in his quote?

If my experiences are anything to go by, you will not need more than a few days to a week to come to a reasonably accurate conclusion about any individual you choose to scrutinize in the manner I propose here.

Now, having seen others for who they are, in terms of their demonstrated commitment to personal success achievement, HOW DO YOU assess or rate yourself in terms of your adherence to EACH of Edison’s 3 rules?

Like I said at the start of this piece, I have noticed that a large majority of people in society are guilty of NOT adhering to those simple rules. Even those who have read the rules or at least heard about them.

People who have read the amazing stories about Edison’s achievements as an inventor despite what should have been the limitation of ONLY 3 months of elementary schooling!

These people, who often possess superior academic qualifications compared to what Edison had, still fail to follow the simple rules he shared as the secret for personal success achievement!

The above explains why today people who achieve exceptional success are in the tiny minority across the world, while those who live average, ordinary lives, unworthy of special mention are in the large majority.

The question to ask then is: what group do YOU want to belong to?

One could argue that there’s nothing wrong with being average. However, being average equates to being mediocre, because in EACH of us exists the potential to be EXCEPTIONAL.

EXCEPTIONAL people are those who take action towards, and ultimately achieve outcomes that the “average” majority do not – resulting in the former being the object of admiration (sometimes envy) bythe latter!

That is how the Creator made every single one of us: To be like Him. And He is exceptional…like no other. We can therefore NOT be anything less, if we are to truly glorify him through our presence on this planet.

The truth is that we cannot actualize our God-given potential by sleeping in worship houses, praying round the clock, without going out into the real world to ACT along the lines we have prayed to Him about.

No matter how religious you are, no matter how many affirmations you recite, YOU cannot become exceptional, if you fail to TAKE PERSONAL ACTION to get what you want

You MUST take action to get what you say you want. And you must do so with diligent persistence, making intelligent modifications to your efforts as you continue.

This is where some of the average majority, who fail to fulfill their God-given potentials (despite being religious) are missing the point.

I recommend you start today taking personal action to achieve your goals, by adhering to Edison’s 3 rules as follows:

a. work hard (in my case I work hard to create passive income generating assets once and reap the rewards forever e.g. my Ration Formulator software, my Feed Formulation Handbook, my Audio DVD on Passive Income Generation etc)

b. stick-to-it (i.e. persevere till you make it),

c. common sense (make intelligent changes to a. and b. as/when needed)

If you do, it will ONLY be a matter of time before your EXCEPTIONAL achievements cause others to recognize and celebrate YOU!

 

The Kind of Parent You Need to Be, to Keep Your Child From Going Astray

Like I always say, I LIVE for my kids. Every day of my life is spent THINKING of how I can share with them, ALL that I know about how to function competently in EVERY aspect of life.

In the case of my son, for instance, I know he will interact with his peers, when I’m away. So I pay diligent attention to the kinds of friends he keeps (I request to meet them). We have had HARD sessions in which I got him to stop seeing certain friends who were a bad influence.

I do this because I know kids in their teens can be easily misled. The many mistakes I made when I passed through that phase remain vivid in my mind – and I’ve told my kids about them.

In spite of all my experiences however, I was shocked to my bones by the news story I read this morning, about the teenage boy (same age as my son!) who killed a 4-year-old boy In Lagos, removing his kidney and intestine”…

It was shared on Facebook by my friend Chima Ejiofor…

I was still trying to process that bit of news when another friend emailed me this link (click) to a news report from Ogun state titled “Baby stolen at naming ceremony. This second story had a wicked twist to it because as the baby was being looked for, freshly cut human body parts were discovered in the compound next to the venue of the naming ceremony!

If truth be told, this kind of macabre news has become commonplace across Nigeria for several years and it’s only getting worse as the offenders are getting younger!

Even in Benin Republic, where I live amongst people who are 80% animists and therefore do not attend church or mosque, I have NEVER once heard  of anything remotely resembling this – talk less of it happening with the frequency it does in Nigeria!!!

The above is what drives me to maintain a firm parenting hold on my kids, and to empower them with real world relevant knowledge, attitudes and skills.

Painful memories of the VERY humiliating experiences I had in the initial stages of my career as an entrepreneur, as well as the progressive societal decay mentioned above convince me I MUST do this for them.

Incidentally, this societal decay did not happen overnight. It’s been incubating for about 2 decades…

I don’t know about you, but I saw the signs…over 15 years ago. Others saw them too, but most of us ignored them since we were not involved. We failed to appreciate the negative impact it would later have on the society at large.

Today, the decay that began many years ago has turned Nigeria into a hell on earth for most people who would be considered NORMAL in other sane societies.

In my case, up till the time I chose to leave paid employment, I’d been able to leverage my formal schooling related abilities to excel. The environment in the corporate multinational I worked in particular was quite well managed to ensure that most times the MOST competent and deserving employees moved UPWARDS in the company’s hierarchy of positions.

Before then, during my time in the university, and before that time as well, I’d also experienced a reasonably normal society where lecturers rarely misbehaved (and if they did they got called to order accordingly) and one could be reasonably sure of the quality of learning to be had.

Then I went for my National Youth Service Corps assignment in Niger state…

There I found myself getting mocked by SS3 students for saying I would NOT come to tell them the answers during the exams proper.

When I got back to Lagos and raved about the fact that I saw the head teacher of the school I served actually standing in the middle of the hall reading out answers to the students (just like they’d told me he would).

My sister who I told laughed in my face and told me Lagos had even more graphic examples (she had just taken the exams herself at the time), and that it was “normal”.

But I still refused to believe it was that bad: this was way back in 1993!

Well if I was shocked by what I saw back then, what I see today, in 2015 simply leaves me numb – every time.

Just when I think I’ve seen or heard the worst story of social decay, someone hits me with news of yet another one on a higher scale.

If you’re a Nigerian living in Nigeria, I am sure you know what I mean by the above.

When I got into trouble between the ages of 10 and 16, adults who did not even know me or my parents were the ones who disciplined me and notified my parents I was keeping bad company.

Today, I am a positive change agent because those (mostly nameless) Nigerian elders/adults chose to set me right, when my own parents were not there.

In contrast to what obtained back then however, today it’s difficult to find adults with the strength of character to set young people on the right path, when they stray…

If anything what we tend to see at an alarming rate, are adults who CORRUPT innocent youths by engaging them to do all sorts of wrong things.

It’s happening at all levels of Nigerian society too!

What most people fail to realize is that many who were corrupted by BAD adults, 10 or more years ago as kids, are TODAY now parents to their own kids!

As you can imagine, most of them cannot but teach their kids the BAD things they learnt from those corrupt adults. In many cases, it’s often all they know how to do. Indeed many of them would have used those BAD habits to get to their current stations in life.

That’s why today we see people in various positions in public and private sectors of Nigeria misbehaving in unspeakable ways.

The LOVE of money is ONE major reason why this mess is happening!

Our collective unwillingness as a people to look beyond material possessions, and carefully scrutinize the moral character of every member of our society, has led us to this DARK place.

The worst part, for me, is however the fact that the few among us who still retain our sanity now find ourselves to be an endangered species.

Those who do the rubbish that’s killing our society see those of us who do NOT conform as a threat, and they instantly make us a target to be dealt with at the slightest opportunity.

I have experienced such discrimination and attacks VERY many times…

In my earlier years as an entrepreneur, I suffered major harassment and abuse at the hands of certain clients in the mould of the idiots I mentioned above. It took me great courage and determination to fight back and free myself from their clutches.

Those experiences, which I vowed I would never expose myself to again made me POUR my heart and soul into building a Web Marketing System that – today – enables me earn 80% of my income online, without having to work on client premises or meet face to face with most of them.

The above is what makes me determined to equip my kids with knowledge, skills and abilities that will make it UNNECESSARY for them to ever have to work for anyone.

Yes.

That is my goal. It is the best protection I can give them against the MADNESS I see taking place daily in the Nigerian society that they have had to grow up in.

It’s also why I am resolved to ensure they relocate with me to Benin Republic so they can experience a contrasting socio-cultural environment to Nigeria’s insane version.

Since many of their peers in Nigeria have already been sucked into that MAD culture (note that it begins with the THINKING HABITS they adopt), I know my kids need something to enable them RESIST the pull.

That “something” is a healthy level of self esteem based on sound awareness of their spiritual connection with God for guidance.

That “something” also includes the experience based confidence and ability I will help them develop to get whatever they need by themselves, without cutting corners.

The key to successfully coaching a child to succeed in life, is to SHOW him/her – via practical involvement – as often as possible, and as early as possible in life – how to do EVERYTHING s/he will need to do in adulthood.

Smart parents of today teach their kids as much as possible about life early on in their lives.

Let them SEE the world through your eyes, and let them LEARN through you how to DEAL effectively with pressures that will be imposed on them as they grow up and relate with peers.

You will periodically NEED to PUSH them HARD (e.g. scolding even punishing: my son and I have boxed and wrestled!) at various stages, when they display character FLAWS you know can be exploited.

You will need to do the above so as to toughen them up. When they leave home, that is ALL they will have to draw upon. And if nothing is there to draw upon, they WILL go astray!

Stop thinking they have to finish school before you tell them about people asking for and giving bribes at job recruitment centres, examination venues or police check points.

Don’t wait till they finish school (NOT even primary school!) before you start teaching them about money and what they can do to earn it…especially outside salaried employment.

In other words, waste no time in helping them develop entrepreneurship abilities.

Why? Because the MADNESS we see today in Nigeria is mostly due to people desperate to make money by any means!

You see, if you coach your child to develop his/her talents and abilities to MAKE money – especially outside paid employment – s/he will feel no pressure to use crooked ways to get it!

Only parents who do this hard work when it matters most, during the formative years of their kids, can look forward to having reasonable peace of mind when their kids grow up.

They are the ones who will be reasonably confident that their kids will do the right thing, even when others do the wrong thing. They will be confident that their child is telling the truth (and therefore support him/her) when s/he says “I did not do it” if/when falsely accused by others.

That is the kind of parent I want to be: I want to CLONE myself in each of my kids so that they can go into the world and function as positive change agents in every society they venture…like I DO or even better than me!

If more Nigerian parents were to adopt a similar philosophy, ALL this madness that we see around us – like the 2 news stories mentioned above – WILL die out in no time!

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – To Succeed, Speak to Solve Problems!

One proven way to succeed is to develop viable solutions to problems others will gladly reward you for. By implication, your success as an expert-who-speaks will be determined by how well your message empowers your audience to solve the problem(s) they face.

The reason: Human Beings dislike problems & often want to eliminate them QUICKLY!

As a result, people always welcome anyone who offers a speedy resolution.

That’s why it is said that if you want to get rich, find a solution to a real problem being experienced by people in your society or market.

In Nigeria for instance, lack of constant power supply creates a unique challenge not faced in most other countries…

So you’ll find, in Nigeria’s markets, all sorts of alternatives to public power supply – from generators to power banks, solar power generators, inverters etc – on sale/actively purchased.

For obvious reasons, the above solutions command much less attention from paying buyers in neighbouring Benin Republic, who ironically buy their electricity from Nigeria!

So, compared to their smaller/poorer Beninese neighbours Nigerians in Nigeria have to spend EXTRA money daily to buy and fuel generators to power their homes and offices.

That has multiple implications: The avoidable extra expense of buying, servicing and replacing generators, the noise and smoke pollution associated with using generators, and the LOSS of pure profit by way of the extra expense associated. These annoyances face the average Nigerian in business – and general society.

The inadvertent extra spending directly impacts on the bottom line for a business owner, or disposable income for a salary earner in Nigeria. Both consequently end up with LESS money than they should, in their pockets or bank accounts every single month.

As you can imagine, for people who are forced to incur EXTRA expenses generating power, ANY opportunity to cut down on spending in other areas would be welcome.

To achieve speaking success with your target audience, address them where they “hurt”!

Identify your client’s unique situation and challenges. Add whatever you find out, to whatever s/he tells you is/are the “goals”.

Then come up with workable ideas and strategies to us in solving the problems/achieving the goals.

a. For instance, in reaching out to individual or organizational clients with my speaking solutions, I typically offer to share ideas and strategies for getting more done, with less effort, in less time, and at less cost.

All of that translates to making them more productive, at increasingly lower cost.

The above is a key reason why over 80% of my Feed Formulation Handbook and Software sales are to Nigerian Farm Business Owners. Many of them tell me their main reason for buying is to learn how to make their own feed, and cut down the huge sums they spend on feeding their livestock.

b. Here’s another perspective: More members of my target audience are inquiring about and purchasing information products, talks and services I offer on passive income generation.

Most already make money doing what they do, but they WANT to make even MORE money, without necessarily having to do more work.

It goes without saying that people all over the world have the same preferences. Everybody wants that kind of benefit.

However, the Nigerians in Nigeria are under much greater pressure to find ways to earn more, without spending, because a chunk of the INCOME they earn is ROUTINELY spent in generating power that government should normally provide them…!

Since no viable short/medium term alternative exists for them to stop spending on power generation, the opportunity to earn MORE money without needing to run their generators for LONGER periods is one that appeals to them.

That’s why I always say the following to my target audience:

“No matter how much money you are making on your job, or in your business, creating passive income streams to COMPLEMENT your efforts WILL leave you better off!” – Tayo K. Solagbade

People LIKE that kind of message. You telling them they don’t need to keep spending time/effort/money in order to keep making money.

People LOVE anyone who can give them a solution to the challenge of not-enough-money.

In speaking to your target audience, you must give them workable ideas to use in solving:

(a) The problems they tell you they face

(b) The problems your own diligent research and investigations tell you they need to address.

In my case, I often go out of my way to find out where the shoe pinches EACH client/member of my target audience – especially those in Nigeria…

Basically, for most of them, their profit margins (in business) and disposable incomes (in paid employment) are LESS than they should be…

That knowledge guides me in speaking to them, so that I know what to say to MAKE THEM feel a need to take action and hire (or buy from) me!

I doing so, I share my tested and proven ideas for getting things done, and making MORE money in the process, without necessarily having to spend ANY money.

One example: Last week, I told the story about a 2 part audio DVD product I purchased, at what I called a criminally LOW price of N100 (half a dollar) per disk.

To make matters worse, I was told that 3rd parties were paid to prepare the audio recording in a studio, and to mass produce the branded labels and jackets used.

Unfortunately, after the heavy spending, sales barely trickled in for months. The sales shop had boxes of unsold disks and books (in thousands) stacked on the floor when I visited.

The staff explained many potential buyers kept asking them to LOWER the price, but despite dropping prices to as low as N100 (about $0.5 USD) per disk, nothing had changed!

I told them to tell their boss…

a. That they needed to take the price back up to something more respectable, noting that my lowest priced audio DVD product sells for N1,000.0…and that, despite the fact that I do NOT use a rented sales shop.

b. That they could have saved A LOT of money by doing some of their product development in-house (at least for starters)…

In this regard, I explained that ALL my branded DVD labels and book covers were designed by me, using Photoshop, on my laptop. I also noted that ALL my audio pod casts and video tutorials/demos are recorded on my laptop.

What’s more, I use my laptop’s DVD drive to burn the needed copies of ALL my products to CD/DVD, which I then label and put in sleeves or plastic casings etc.

Now, don’t get me wrong. In other climes, it could be smarter to give this out to some “provider”…

But when you are an individual or micro to small business in a market like Nigeria, where buyer attitudes make selling of products like this difficult, it’s best to minimize the expense overheads to give yourself the best possible chance of earning tangible profits per sale.

Then over time, as your brand becomes more established, nothing stops you from outsourcing any areas you want, so long as you’re sure you’ll remain profitable.

There’s also the relatively higher cost of doing it. For instance in Cotonou, I print ONE A4 page in black and white for N8, but in Lagos, it costs me N50…over 10 times more!

NB: In case you’re wondering “What if the numbers of disks to be duplicated are many?” the answer is simple: purchase a CD duplicator!

It will pay for itself many times over. I know this because of the results being enjoyed by a young Beninese friend in Cotonou, who I encouraged to revive his own CD duplicator, which he’d abandoned in his parents’ home for months.

Today, he uses it in a business centre he’s opened in that spare room in the family house!

Moral: The fact that you have money does NOT mean you have to spend it to get MORE of the results you want.

Quite often, deep thinking and analysis of how you currently do what you do, can help you conceive superior ways to IMPROVE the results you get – at zero cost!

As you can see from the above, in speaking to my clients, I offer to share ideas and strategies, about how to earn MORE, and SPEND LESS money, time, and effort in doing what they do better.

In other words, I describe to them practical solutions to problems they face…and every now and then, that leads them to hire (or buy from) me.

If you adopt a similar problem solving focus in speaking to your clients(be it as individuals or in groups), you’ll dramatically boost the response generating impact of your sales/marketing messages on them!

People Who Succeed Are Often Driven By A Compelling Need (True Story About My ExcelVB Income & Expense Manager – Get it for N1,000 instead of N5,000) – Offer Expires MNT Friday 31st July 2015

That was when I marketed that app, on a CDROM from door to door (via daily pavement pounding) in the Ogba-Ikeja area of Nigeria’s Lagos state.

I pushed myself so hard, that in November 2007, I sold over N41,000.00 (Forty One Thousand Naira) worth of it to micro, small and medium business owners in the above mentioned area. Funny thing is I NEVER thought about how much it was adding up to. I was just going out there each day, driven by a need to make money to meet the basic needs of myself and my dependents.

What I learned during that phase serves me well today, as I sell to high profile buyers from home – using the web.

How is this possible you ask?

You see, if you pay careful attention, you CAN learn a LOT about yourself and the psychology of selling to HUMAN BEINGS in the process of struggling and suffering to make sales!

When you KNOW that you have NO MONEY in your pockets or bank account to buy fuel into your car, or buy food for your wife and kids to eat at home, YOUR RESOLVE to close sales is likely to HARDEN!

Human beings like leisure, pleasure, comfort, fun etc. We do NOT like stressing ourselves when alternatives exist to take things easy. We love EASE.

We therefore need to have something that we simply cannot ignore happen to use, to DENY that love of EASE.

This is why many who succeed as sales persons tend to be those who are DRIVEN by a need they have (e.g. lack of money, hunger, poverty) which they know that CLOSING sales can help them meet

A guy who needs to cough up N150k to complete his rent renewal, will be DRIVEN to try closing more sales of his Web Marketing service (priced at N100k).

He will do so, in order to fulfill his rent obligation, and have a little left over to live on.

What I just said above is what has happened personally to me: October to December 2007 was an extremely challenging period of my life!

But there were many others…

Those kinds of circumstances are what I routinely found myself faced with, and often with NO ONE to help (Especially since close relatives had already been lending me money I never managed to return)!

Those painful, prolonged experiences of struggle and suffering forced me to grow faster than I would have, if I had HAD alternatives to fall back on every time.

For instance, my negotiation skills rapidly improved because of the constant need I had to return home with at least ONE sale of my N2,500 software, so as to provide for my family’s needs for the next day. We were basically living from hand to mouth back then.

Yet, I persisted. Actually I had no choice. My bridges were burnt.

So I had to steel myself (hat tip to Burt Dubin) and fight to get back on my feet.

And it worked: I came face to face with my other self(as promised by Napoleon Hill in Think & Grow Rich) i.e. the one that KNOWS that conquering adversity is necessary step for success achievement.

I consequently gained LOTS of confidence and selling skills refinement from selling my N2,500 app. I also got a LOT of ideas about WHO I could sell to, WHAT I could sell to them, and HOW to make them buy.

It all began to pay off within the first 8 weeks of 2008…

I won high paying projects building apps much more elaborate and sophisticated than the N2,500 app. The client companies (a hotel, as well as a hospital) hired me to develop custom apps for them after I did my demonstration of the smaller app.

Basically, the decision maker asked “Can you build something that works like this app of yours, to do what we do here in MS Excel?

And I simply replied: “Of course. Just tell and/or show me what you do, and how you do it, then tell me what you want the finished app to do. For best results, let me have someone to vet what I’m doing, to minimize rework, and you’ll have your app in the promised delivery duration.

By this time, my selling instincts from the painful periods of hardship had become keenly honed…

Among other things, I’d become adept at parrying any attempts to haggle about or beat down my fees unreasonably.

I was always clear in my mind about HOW MUCH I needed to get from each job, to ensure reasonable peace of mind for me and my family, until I got another project.

The result was that I got home with much more money in my pockets.

Today, I use what I learnt to close sales without even meeting clients face to face.

That’s how suffering helps you. When you have a NEED that you feel compelled to satisfy, and money is required, that NEED is likely to drive you to put in much more effort, than you normally would be willing to, in order to get the money that enables you meet it!

During the period when that need remains unmet, you may feel pain, stress or have to struggle. In other words, you may experience some suffering. But ultimely, if you persist, that NEED you feel is what will drive you to succeed.

That’s why I tell people all the time that suffering is good for us…like Jim Rohn said, “Adversity forces the human spirit to grow!”

Your Response to Life’s Challenges Determines How Well You Succeed

The Challenge-Response (C-R) Model

I learnt about this model in a course I took during my third year of undergraduate study in the University of Ibadan’s Agricultural Extension Services department.

As I recall it, the C-R model is based on the premise that people from some societies, which today are regarded as “developed”, in the early days on earth, were confronted by very harsh environmental conditions.

They had – among other things – extreme weather variations (e.g. Snow during which time most plants either died or hibernated, leaving little if any fruits and animals for humans to eat). Also phenomena like Hurricanes, Blizzards, and Earthquakes etc were repeatedly visited upon them and often claimed many lives.

The frightening possibility of extinction forced them to search for ways to “control” their environment.

Over many years, concerted efforts led to various inventions which progressively made it possible to control their environment better (Electricity, Air-conditioning, weather monitoring and control equipment etc). Man-made creations, designed to make life on earth safer and easier, were thus initially produced as a means to ensure survival.

However, in the process of responding to nature’s life-threatening challenges, they also discovered a previously unknown part of themselves. They had come to realise an inherent ability as humans to achieve practically anything they set their minds to.

So they began applying the learnings obtained from trying to survive, to making their existence even more pleasurable. In effect science and technology was born, and evolved over the years to meet their needs – and those of the rest of the world!

At about the same time, in the other groups of societies, which today are considered to be “developing” or “under-developed”/”third world” etc, however (i.e. during those early days), the C-R model posits that the environment was generally very conducive for human existence.

For instance in many places, trees with juicy, edible fruits were rarely ever in short supply -and when they did get limited in availability, the people simply moved on to other areas where things were still “rosy”!

Also, weather variations – in most parts – rarely approached the extremities recorded in the societies, which are today called “developed”.

So, the proponents of this sociological “theory” posit that the favourable environment – at that time – in the societies today regarded as “under-developed” made the people there adopt a relaxed – passive – attitude to life wherein they felt no pressing NEED to control their environment (at least not like those in the relatively “harsher” environments which today are considered “developed”.

Unfortunately, this absence of frighteningly challenging external stimuli (believed to have motivated the now developed societies (back then – and even today!) to actively seek to control their environment), is what the proponents of the C-R model believe led to the relative underdevelopment of those less developed today.

Analogy: Application of the C-R Model In Sports

Now, I have no interest in debating whether or not this model is correct. What I am interested in is the logic of the argument it presents. World Class athletes will tell you that when their rivals are not in a race with them, they often find it difficult to put in the extra effort needed to break old (or set) new records. It is not uncommon to hear a professional athlete say she needs someone to “pace” her.

Think back to competitions you have witnessed, and you will realise that records have often been set, as a result of two or more strong contenders for the first place in a race struggling to beat each other to the finish line. When an athlete knows she has outpaced the rest of the field, there is sometimes less motivation to keep going at maximum speed, since no physical evidence of a threat to clinching first place is apparent.

The foregoing shows that the logic of the C-R model could (and I do mean could!) be right. If we apply it to our individual lives, it implies that our difficult colleagues, bosses, and friends actually present us with challenges that we can CHOOSE to deliberately USE motivate ourselves to strive for continuous improvement in our personal and work lives.

So, every time they refuse to help, try to obstruct us, criticise (or ridicule) us, we should deliberately draw strength from the thought of eventually achieving our objective(s) DESPITE their efforts!

Generally, those who go through life too easily or comfortably are often ill prepared to deal with difficulties and disappointments – especially psychologically. As a result, they are typically incapable of withstanding adversity or recovering from (temporary) setbacks or failures.

On the other hand, people who have always had to struggle through life often emerge “toughened”, and demonstrate this by being resilient even in the face of difficulties, hardships, setbacks etc caused by difficult people or circumstances around them.

Summary: To be successful in life, one needs to develop an ability to accommodate and tolerate others who differ from – or disagree with – us in any number of ways.

In the same way, we need to be able to ADAPT to those inevitable periods when we will find ourselves in inconvenient, difficult, uncomfortable environments or circumstances that we are NOT so used to, or that we totally dislike. Our ability to ENDURE, and make the most of such “opportunities” will ultimately determine our success – or otherwise.

These are examples of REAL-LIFE challenges you will have to deal with daily. As I have said elsewhere, development of a positive mindset, mental stamina and visualisation are the three most CRUCIAL requirements for ANYONE to succeed in ANY area of endeavour in life.

It’s not easy to do and you may not like it, but in my opinion nothing teaches greater discipline (and builds you UP better) than having to periodically struggle, and WORK hard to OVERCOME unexpected difficulties or challenges that confront you in your society and/or environment.

Master this skill, and you will be well on your way to becoming truly UNSTOPPABLE!

Why You Are Not Making (Enough) Sales!

Today I purchased an excellent 2 part audio DVD product (titled “Know Your Rights in Dealing With the Police/In Court”) at a microbusiness sales shop. But each disk cost me N100 (One Hundred Naira) – and to me, that price was criminally LOW! I told the sales lady so, noting that my audio DVD products sell for a minimum of N1,000 (most from N2,500), and I do NOT even pay for a rented outlet!!

Curious, I asked the lady, if the sales recorded covered the rental overheads and other expense they were incurring.

Not surprisingly, she told me her boss, the brilliant lawyer who had produced that 2 part audio series – and many other products lined up in boxes in the shop – had dispensed a lot of his personal funds trying to get buyers.

According to her, people keep telling them to bring down their price – yet, even at N100 for both the DVDs and the book versions, sales are only trickling in!

Figures.

Buyers in these parts are like that. Listening to them in deciding your pricing is equivalent to commiting business marketing suicide. A long time ago, I learned to IGNORE prospective buyers who are too fixated on my PRICE to the exclusion of other considerations.

Before leaving, I told the lady to tell her boss to give me a call.

If he calls I intend to give him a FREE consultation on what he is doing wrong, and why he needs to completely CHANGE the selling arrangement he currently has in place, if he wants to command SALES befitting the quality of product he offers.

I have listened to the first part of the DVD, and it’s obvious that it was professionally produced in a studio. What’s more, each DVD has a label, and a sleeve – all branded.

As you can imagine that must have cost quite a bit, to do.

Consider also that he has over 10 other products similarly produced all stacked in boxes in the retail shop.

The problem is – as I told the young lady – only people who PHYSICALLY come across the shop, and who can spare the time to stop over are most likely to make purchases.

Yet, the truth remains that MANY people would most likely be positively disposed to purchasing a product that offers RELIABLE information of YOUR RIGHTS in dealing with the police, and in court.

It’s a subject, especially in Nigeria, that is worth learning a bit about, given the erratic nature of Nigeria’s society.

I should add here that she mentioned they have a website, but their offline efforts are not in anyway complemented by what is online. As a result, little synergy is being achieved.

If my experiences are anything to go buy (and I KNOW from what I’ve done for other clients and myself that they are), waiting for people to discover you in a corner shop, where you have books and DVDs in boxes for sale, is unlikely to yield tangible, talk less sustainable results over time.

What you are selling is INFORMATION in various formats that people can buy. It is imperative, if you wish to be profitable, that you drastically cut down the costs you incur in FINDING or attracting potential buyers.

Indeed, I always recommend for people in this field, that they employ a system that makes people who need their products find and come to them. This is because that ensure the most serious of them come to have sales discussions with you.

This lawyer, I learnt, in a bid to make more sales at a point has even paid “marketers” to go out to the streets hawking the products.

Wrong move.

That will hurt you much more than it can help you – if at all!

Take it from me. I have seen so many people end up with zero results to show from using this strategy.

The minute you adopt that approach, you make yourself and what you offer look ORDINARY – and that will only attract the worst kinds of potential buyers: those looking for bargains at ANY cost. Those who do NOT appreciate quality or value.

If you want to make good profits in business, it is important to make up your mind to attract ONLY people who will be willing to pay what you ask (or something close) to get the QUALITY solution you offer.

That’s why you need to adopt a system that is repeatable, and reproducible, which will work for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and all round the year – even when you are sleeping – to make serious minded potential buyers discover and contact you!

This kind of system can however NOT be developed overnight.

You will need to invest quality time and effort, to get it up and running.

But the minute it’s in place and working well (and you keep WORKING it) you will be able to reap the SALES rewards as promised, with MINIMAL cost overheads.

Indeed, in the case of the lawyer, like I told his sales person, he would be abe to SHUT that rented shop permanently, and still be able to make MUCH more money selling ALL his products than he ever did BEFORE he adopted the system I propose here.

Simply put, this system is a timeless marketing weapon that will generate sales leads for you, making those who need your information products find and CONTACT by themselves, to get it.

The best part is most times they will come VERY prepared to part with the money you tell them to pay !
