THE FARM CEO (Issue 33): 13 Year Old Boy’s Invention Solves Key African Agricultural Problem, Agricultural innovations can help African farmers compete, boost food security, From Invention to Innovation in African Agriculture, Africa innovations: 15 ideas helping to transform a continent, Agriculture is a new critical market force

[Tagline: If it can help your farm business, you’ll find it in THE FARM CEO™ Newspaper ]

In this third issue for this year (2016), all five reports/articles showcased are from third party websites on the theme of “Innovation in African Agriculture”.

I believe too little attention has been paid so far to the role that innovation, driven by indigenous individuals and groups can play in taking African farming to the next level and beyond.

The articles showcased here offer insights into efforts being made in certain African markets to do a better job of bringing useful innovations into the spotlight and adapting them for profitable application in relevant enterprises.

We need to keep in mind the fact that ideas, simple as they are, and often costing little or nothing, can lead to massive positive changes in the fortunes of our business enterprises.

Considering that farm businesses generally tend to struggle with relatively low profit margins, it goes without saying that adopting innovative thinking in doing our farming will be the crucial key to making out businesses more successful in terms of profits made as well as time, effort and money expended.

The story of the simple innovative idea used by the Kenyan teenager featured on this page provides an excellent example of what ideas can do if properly harnessed. It’s time for farm business owners in 21st century Africa to begin investing some of their quality time into THINKING up new and better ways to do what they do.

Hopefully, for those of you who are subscribers to The Farm CEO™, this issue’s 5 reports will give you a few pointers/inspiration.

Richard Turere’s Lion Light system is made out of LED bulbs and a car battery to prevent lions from eating livestock.

By Daniela Walker – 1 march 2013

The Nairobi National Park lays four miles south of Kenya’s capital city, with just one fence keeping wild animals away from humans. This makes for a lot of human-animal conflict, especially between lions and cattle farmers.

The Thinking Required to Succeed With a Web Marketing System | WATCH VIDEO PRESENTATION & GET FREE PDF DOWNLOAD

UPDATE (VIDEO): The Thinking Required to Succeed With a Web Marketing System (WMS) – GET FREE PDF DOWNLOAD – Click to watch the video presentation

TheThinkingRequiredtoSucceedWithaWMSUPLOADGIF

The thinking behind the development and implementation of what I conceived as a Web Marketing System (WMS) differs considerably from that adopted for offline marketing purposes.

A WMS can be designed to attract prospects from widely differing (e.g African vs Western) cultures, with very different mental attitudes, especially with regard to their buying behaviour online.

I have used my WMS to sell to both groups for years, and I also help clients develop custom WMSs to do same.

The power of a WMS lies in its ability to screen out wrong prospects by design!

I study the client by observation and responses she provides to my multi item Content Copywriting Questionnaire.

Once I have the information and access to resources needed, I stitch it all together to create adynamic leads generating WMS.

Then the client is asked to review how it all fits together and ties in to her offline marketing efforts – helping to cut down time, effort and money expended.

A WMS can be a huge perfomance boosting addition to the arsenal of a client who is already good at recruiting clients offline.

The thing to note however is that what you need to succeed with using a WMS is fairly different and will require you to learn some new things and to monitor and measure performance indices like Website Conversion Ratio, Cost Of Customer Acquisition (COCA)…

At the risk of sounding arrogant, I’ll let on that I generally consider traffic to be over rated – especially for solutions of the kind I and most of my clients offer e.g learning and other intangible but high profile solitions. I also ignore indices like page rank. The results I get make it clear that more important indices exist.

A smart WMS, if used right, will make more of those who fit your target audience profile contact you for details.

Based on my hard won experiences selling to buyers in and out of Africa, online marketing success can happen at various levels.Rather than look to make people engage you in the normal ways, you can get them into the sales process earlier by offering low risk options they can sign up for remotely.

The best part is that if used right, a WMS keeps selling you to all those who contact you even if they buy nothing, so that sometime in the future they may stil be drawn in to return ready to buy.

Example 1: Last week, a Farm CEO from Kiev, Ukraine connected with me on Facebook, then called to answer my questions at my insistence – after we’d exchanged multiple Facebook messages over a 2 week period.

That’s the power a WMS gives you, to test the seriousness of a prospect. He wants my Poultry Farm Manager but says the price is high. In future I may send him a time limited promo offer.

Example 2: Just this past Monday one such prospect – a Farm CEO who called me in Cotonou a year ago about 1 of my ExcelVB apps – called to say he was ready to buy that app and 2 other products.

2 hours later, he’d done the transfer, then told me he had interest in my other solutuons and hoped to benefit from them with concessions as a client.

This is what I help clients acquire: A system that makes prospects from multiple markets come to you without your meeting or going to them, and yet be so convinced as to do what you ask on your terms, making your selling process so much easier even as it works better.

I call it Silent Success.

For WMS success we need to constantly create useful content and push it to appeal to each group.

Final words: What experience has however taught me is that the client that diligently and creatively uses her WMS the way I recommend , will succeed. It will just be a matter of time.

Those who are lazy, negligent/indifferent, or unwilling to exert themselves by going the extra mile will generally find it VERY hard to succeed like I do with my own WMS, talk less of doing better.

That’s not a curse. It’s a statement of fact.

Apart from developing and implementing the WMS, I coach the client to use it as a weapon for cutting down her Cost of Customer Acquisition while boosting her marketing reach and impact via name/brand recognition.

Part of that involves helping her see things as they are done online using the WMS from my perspective.

Achieve Greater Success by Being a Problem Solver

The Internet, if properly utilized to achieve what Michel Fortin describes as Power Positioning (click), can make people who fit your target audience profile, conclude YOU are the go to-expert for virtually anything they need as far as what you do is concerned.

In my case, I continue to marvel at how people from within and outside Africa continue to reach out to me, even when all they want is to gain access to some other resources outside of me.

They basically display a preference to have me TELL them where to go, who to speak with or email, and so on.

This has happened several times with Farm CEOs and those aspiring, who contacted me by phone, and email to ask how they could get in touch with – for instance – decision makers in the famous Songhai’s Integrated Agricultural Centre’s Benin Republic headquarters.

On other occasions, I have had some call to ask if I could give them the contact details or a name for anyone in charge of a Songhai-modeled facility in one of Nigeria’s states.

When we spoke, it was often obvious they assumed I would have the answers they needed.

Thankfully, many times I did have the answer, and on the few occasions I did not, I was able to send them to someone who did.

The above is why I remain diligently committed to staying up to date with as much relevant information as possible with regard to what I do as a Best Practice Farm Business Support Specialist.

My experiences from way back in paid employment have trained me to remember that people are naturally drawn towards persons they feel can SOLVE their problems or give them answers they seek.

So, I make a point of adding to myself with the above in mind, plus I SHARE what I know generously with them whenever they reach out to me.

The result is they go away feeling good about me, and often tell others.

Even better is the fact that those who go on to do business with me, often leave with WAY more value than they pay me for, and they say so.

Indeed, some return because of that to do repeat business with me.

Most importantly, we become and remain friends subsequently.

As a matter of fact, I am deliberately nurturing LONG term relationships with ALL who buy from me, so as to PROVE that my solutions not only work, but they remain relevant to the needs of those who invest in them.

In the past month, I’ve found myself having to email the information below, obtained from the Agra Innovate exhibition to 2 different Farm CEOs who in discussing with me on separate occasions eagerly asked that I send it to them.

They had plans that required connecting with some of the organizations. I gladly obliged, and then decided to publish it in a post to make it easier to send it to others who may request it in future. Also, this method makes it possible for those searching online to also find the information even without

Below, I share contact details and basic information about representatives of certain exhibiting organizations I had discussions with during my visit to the Agra Innovate Agricultural Exhibition on it’s last day in November 2015 at the Landmark Centre, in Lagos’ Victoria Island.

Like I said, I came in from Cotonou to attend the last day (Nov 28 or so) of this event at the Landmark Centre on Victoria Island.

I got the following contact details on promotional materials and call cards freely given out by the respective company representatives:

1. GIZ

Christian Widmann is Head of Programme, Pro-poor Growth & Promotion of Employment in Nigeria (SEDIN) by GIZ, the German NGO who make chin chin from Cassava flour.

Mobile: +234-704 436 9589. Email: sedin at giz dot de.

Sunday Idahosa is Value Chain Advisor for GIZ’s “Agro-Allied & Commercial Cassava Farmers Association” in Ogun state.

His number is +234-703 729 2509.

2. Dangote

Ms. Lillian Sadoh is Group Head ITMIS & Strategy of Dansa Holdings Ltd.

I spoke to her at the exhibition about using Pineapple peels to make drinks. They have:

A. Dansa pineapple farms.

B. Dansa Oil palm farm with crude palm oil refinery.

C.  1,200 metric tonnes tomato paste factory

Lillian’s mobile is +234-811-393-6816 or +234-805-933-2211 and her email is lillian dot sadoh at dansaholdings dot com

3. PRESCO Plc

This Edo state based company I told you produced a unique range of specialized oils from different parts of the palm fruit alone!

They’ve been around for about 3 decades. I knew about them when I was based in Benin city.

Jalaj ARORA is Head – Sales & Marketing of PRESCO Plc. He is the one I called and spoke to after the Agra Innovate exhibition at Landmark centre, VI.

His mobile no is 0703 562 2750 and his email address is jalaj dot arora at siat-group dot com

No. 228: To Achieve Extraordinary Feats, Be Prepared to Overcome Extraordinary Trials! [Hint: That’s Why You Need Practical Guiding Philosophies to Pursue Success]

“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny” – C.S (Clive Staples) Lewis, 20th century British novelist, poet, literary critic, theologian, broadcaster, lecturer (November 29, 1898 to November 22, 1963)

The above C.S. Lewis quote was shared by a Facebook friend, on her wall, with a question asking if her observation that most successful people have often “been through the absolute worst times” was correct.

Something about the way she made wrote it got me thinking, that not everyone aspiring to success will readily understand why they should accept severe trials, and hardships as necessary stepping stones to achieve their valued goals.

So I wrote THIS piece to explain…

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – To Achieve Extraordinary Feats, Be Prepared to Overcome Extraordinary Trials!

In my case, I learnt that truth by studying books about authentic success achievement, during the darkest days of my struggles as a startup/struggling entrepreneur.

Without the insights I gained from doing that diligent self-education, and the understanding they helped me develop about the need to have a GUIDING PHILOSOPHY for pursuing the success I wanted, I am convinced I would NOT be succeeding the way I am today.

Over 12 years on, since I quit paid employment to start my own business, I am able to build on my successes with confidence and determination, regardless of delays, disappointments or setbacks I encounter.

Without the success philosophies I read and adapted to suit my needs, I would have fallen by the wayside a LONG time ago!

The harsh economic times we’re in are TESTING people to the limits of their confidence, patience and self-belief…

I draw from my personal experiences and studies/investigations, including references and quotes, to explain why, if you want great success, you will most likely, as a matter of necessity have to endure great adversity BEFORE you achieve whatever dreams you set your mind on.

I know this because I made out time to carefully investigate it from my early startup years as a novice entrepreneur.

Among other things, I did a lot of reading e.g. Napoleon Hill’s Think & Grow Rich, Cynthia Kersey’s bestseller “UNSTOPPABLE!” (which tell 45 amazing true stories of entrepreneurs who overcame great suffering to succeed) as well as James Cook’s New York Times Bestseller “The Startup Entrepreneur”.

What I learnt helped me learn how to deal with frequent and prolonged hard times I faced in my business till I gained mastery that enabled me succeed more often.

As time went on, I found, by reflecting on my own experiences, that the authors of those books were right.

In past writings, I’ve noted that James Cook stated in “The Startup Entrepreneur” findings from his personal experiences as an entrepreneur, as well as his research into the lives of over 500 successful entrepreneurs in America.

Among other insights, Cook found that there is a direct correlation between the degree of suffering an entrepreneur goes through and the height of success s/he eventually achieves.

According to him, the greater the suffering, the greatest the height of eventual success achievement.

Jim Rohn, in one of his book explained why the above happens by saying:

“Be grateful for adversity, for it forces the human spirit to grow…there cannot be achievement in the absence of adversity.” –
Jim Rohn

Anyone who wants to achieve sustainable long term success in any area of endeavour in life needs to understand, accept and apply these truths and philosophies in his/her life.

Those who do never feel a need to complain when the going gets tough, because the know it’s going to make them better equipped to succeed.

What I’ve found is that many people do NOT know this truth before they embark on their journey into tough, unpredictable world of business/entrepreneurship.

And that’s why most of the allow hard times they encounter to discourage and make them quit.

Napoleon Hill noted that it’s important to have a guiding philosophy you adhere to (like that outlined in his classic bestseller – Think and Grow Rich), in pursuit of your valued goal, especially to keep you going through adversity or failure which is also known as “Temporary Defeat”.

Question: But who is Burt Dubin, and why do I (Tayo K. Solagbade) think you should you learn from

him?

Answer: Burt is a 3 decade veteran in the professional speaking business. After achieving top level cross continental success as an

expert-speaker, he has established a reputation for mentoring some of the highest paid speakers in the world. He owns SpeakingBizSuccess.com, SpeakingSuccess.com and BurtDubin.com.

Burt helps those he mentors (experts-who-speak) to Position, Package, Promote, and Present* themselves successfully to clients (*He calls

them the 4Ps). That’s why it’s no surprise that on Burt’s website, considerable space capital is devoted to useful business marketing articles as well as products.

It might also interest you to know that MANY years back, Burt established himself as one of the best marketing minds in the world. To really put this FACT in

proper perspective, I’ll provide more specific details in form of an example.

A few years ago, Burt contributed an article to a powerful publication titled “The Most Effective Articles Ever – By The World’s Top Marketers“. That 574 page ebook features timeless marketing advice from 71 of the world’s top marketers – including Jack

Trout, Joe Vitale, Yanik Silver…and Burt Dubin.

That’s ample proof that (in addition to Public Speaking), Burt would be a great resource to learn business marketing from!

Click here to read TONS of Burt’s useful articles on professional public speaking and business marketing.

While there, be sure to download his audio experiences (MP3) on the right. Most importantly, take a few moments to use the link provided on the top right, below the banner, to send Burt a message, about your needs and interest in his mentoring solutions.

Full Disclosure: I represent Burt as Sole Agent for his products/services, which means if YOU buy from him, I get paid.

But that’s NOT the main reason I represent and recommend him. I have benefited in many ways by learning from Burt. Through his writing, his audio recordings,

and from directly relating with him.

Before we teamed up in 2011, I’d been studying his work and adapting it to succeed in my work from way back in 2002. It does not matter what part of the world

you’re in. If you know how to adapt them to suit your peculiar local needs, Burt’s ideas and strategies WILL work for you. I am living proof of it!

That’s why I never tire of CONFIDENTLY recommending him to others.

If you need help putting the ideas shared above to use, let me know HERE.

[Tagline: If it can help your farm business, you’ll find it in THE FARM CEO™ Newspaper ]

In this second issue for this year (2016), I feature on this first page, excerpts from a book review published by the National Academy of Sciences of a book titled “Nutrient Requirements of Laboratory Animals”. It’s a worthwhile read.

PREVIEW

1 General Considerations for Feeding and Diet Formulation

A laboratory animal’s nutritional status influences its ability to reach its genetic potential for growth, reproduction, and longevity and to respond to pathogens and other environmental stresses.

A nutritionally balanced diet is important both for the welfare of laboratory animals and to ensure that experimental results are not biased by unintended nutritional factors.

An Indigenous African Church Leader Who Makes World Class Talking Automobiles (Incl. Engines!) From Scratch, Using Local Materials in Ghana: Meet Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo

I’ve been studying and researching him for some time now and have downloaded articles, videos and audios by reporters from BBC, Al Jazeera, AFP, CNN etc, based on visits they made to his facility in Ghana, to see his amazing locally made talking SUVs and other tech products like TVs that go off when you clap, and doors that speak when you knock and open ONLY if someone is in.

Over 2 decades ago, Ghana’s Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo began producing hand-built SUVs made using over 80% locally fabricated parts, including branded engine blocks molded in his foundry, using an ingenious process involving crushed palm kernel shells. Today, his Made-in-Ghana cars are gaining international attention.

A true Man Of God!

The best thing about this man is that he continues to train thousands of Ghanaian youths in his hands-on training school, regardless of their religious beliefs or preference.

Note also that this Apostle’s church, with branches across Ghana is 100% indigenous and self funding via a chain of businesses from which he finances the motor manufacturing arm, and also give out scholarships and free homes to citizens in need.

Would you believe the dashboard, bumpers and other parts of the cars he and his team build are made from locally crafted wood and formica with superb finishing that mimics plastic used in imported cars but is much much cheaper?

In fact only the tires (and I think the radiators) used in his cars are imported. When he began years ago, he worked with a small team over 6 months to build one single SUV by hand.

I have watched one of the training videos. It is amazing.

If Nigeria’s Innoson – which mostly assembles imported cars – can adopt a similar strategy, he won’t be affected by lack of government patronage.

Apostle Safo was ignored by Government and private sector investors in his country for decades. Only in the last 3 years or so has he begun to get major attention from them.

Before then he refused to be discouraged and simply channeled funds from his multiple businesses into the car making.

Note that he does not hold a university degree in engineering!

Today, his son who is a licensed pilot runs the company and is now leading a move to export their unique range of cars, which now enjoy patronage from local celebrities and others.

It’s amazing that Nigerians and Africans are not celebrating this guy, and sending people to learn from him!!!

Improve and Sustain Your Crop Farm Land Productivity By Cultivating Nitrogen Fixing Legumes

Apart from artificial sources (e.g. inorganic nitrogen fertilizers like urea, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate etc) as well as limited natural resources from rain water, the fixation of nitrogen by free living bacteria, supplies the balance of nitrogen needs of the soil.

The best known example of such fixation is demonstrated in the symbiotic relationship between higher plants called “legumes” and a group of bacteria (also called Rhibozium). The symbiotic activity takes place in the root nodules of the plant.

The continuous cultivation of non-legumes (which some farmers are guilty of) depletes soil fertility over time, and this condition is NOT reversible by fertilization of the soil with phosphorous, potassium or trace minerals.

Legume cropping does the opposite of the above. In other words, it does NOT result in depletion of the land’s productivity. Indeed, non-leguminous crops that are planted on land previously cropped with legumes, actually benefit from the nitrogen fixation that would have been substantially facilitated by the growth of the legumes!

It must be noted however, that the nitrogen status of legume cropped soil is ultimately determined to a great extent by the cultural farm practices employed on it.

The following are three possible scenarios:

1. When a crop is ploughed under, full nitrogen gain is realized – meaning a high nitrogen status is achieved.

2. When the cropped legumes are fed to farm animals, the gain is NOT as great as what obtains in 1. above, but it is still quite appreciable.

3. Removal of the above ground portion (known as “stober”) of the crop, in contrast, leads to little improvement in the nitrogen status of the land.

What use can you make of this?

Well, I suggest you consider mixed cropping of non-legumes with leguminous crops like cowpea for instance. Apart from the yield of useful farm crops for sale or in feeding livestock, you will be able to prolong the “life” of your soil – That’s when compared to a situation when you did not crop any legumes.

It is instructive to note that even though they give “quicker” results and are easier to “use”, inorganic or chemical fertilizers tend to leave harmful residues in the soil with attendant side effects.

As such, they must be used with proper care and preferably in combination with natural methods like legume cropping.

Also, consider this: if you diligently plant legumes on your land post-harvest of your crops, they would help to replenish the soil before the next planting cycle begins.

The above statement refers to farming situations in which land may be left “idle” after cropped produce has been harvested. In the old days, we were told the “rest” or “fallow” period would allow the land recover. However, in intensive crop farming systems such rest periods may not result in significant nutrient status improvement – except something extra is done. An example of that something extra would be to deliberately plant legumes on the farmland for the duration of the so called “rest” period, which would then be trimmed/weeded or removed once planting of the main crop (s) is to resume.

Depending on how long the rest period is, and the legume type adopted, a reasonable improvement in nitrogen status of the soil can be expected if this is done.

Summary

This article has tried to impress upon the crop farmer, the need to lean more towards natural methods for crop farm land fertility replenishment and sustenance, as against short term benefits of exclusive or major use of chemical fertilizers, which often lead to serious soil damage in the long run.

If you plan to stay in business for the long term, producing profitable crop output from your farm land, it is imperative that you give serious consideration to the use of the strategies described here.

Handle Your Problems Without Drama!

One Yoruba saying I really LOVE goes thus:

Gbogbo alangba lo da inu de ile. A ko mo eyi ti inu nrun.

Literal Translation:
Since all lizards go around with their stomachs on the ground, we cannot tell which one is suffering from stomach trouble.

Contextual Translation:
The fact that others are not screaming to your hearing about the challenges they are facing in their lives does NOT mean they have none. So stop thinking you are the only one with problems and that others are better off, or have no clue what you’re going through.

Quite often there will be some who not only know what you’re feeling, because they’ve been down that road before…

However even those persons may actually – at that point in time- be going through an even worse experience, but have TRAINED themselves to take it in their stride, and use it as a stepping stone to achieve their goal.

These thoughts often come to my mind every time I come across people who readily complain about their inability to have one or more things they want in life, and who choose to moan and complain about how unfair life is, INSTEAD of devoting intelligent, creative effort t think up viable ways to turn their circumstances around while seeking help from the Creator via prayer.

It has been my experience that those who complain in this manner the most, are often people who are actually situated in socioeconomic environments that afford them MUCH greater access to multiple comforts, conveniences and benefits.

In other words, these people are often living in more conducive circumstances compared to others who are NOT complaining.

I argue, and historical evidence abounds to back it up, that for every bad experience YOU find yourself having, someone out there will have gone through, or is currently going through something that is MUCH worse.

The fact that you may not be aware of it is no justification for you to assume it is not happening. Indeed, as I mentioned above, it could be happening to someone around you, that you see everyday, but s/he may choose to deal silently – and courageously – with it, instead of falling apart and burdening everyone around with the problem.

That is not to say one should not ask for help or support, or seek outlets for venting. That can be therapeutically beneficial at times.

What I am however against is adopting the disposition of a victim or trying to make yourself look like you’re suffering more than you should.

Like I always tell people I coach, you will NEVER be presented with a challenge in your life that will be beyond your ability to overcome it. All you need to do is harden your resolve and focus on finding a viable solution to the problem. That mind set will NEVER fail you.

But while you’re passing through that phase, the whole world need NOT know about it. They have their own problems to worry about – and to be honest, no one is likely to give you an award or pat on the back for knowing how to moan and complain about how badly life is treating you.

So, get real: Take a cue from the lizards mentioned in the Yoruba quote I began this piece with.

Choose to be discrete about how you share information about whatever you think your pains or difficulties are. You are better off working to eliminate them and THEN offering to share HOW you did it with others who may be facing similar issues.

That way you add VALUE to the world: which will make people want to have you around. No one wants a complainer for a friend. They may not say it, but they most certainly THINK IT!

I’ll end this piece by sharing a quote from Jim Rohn, which perfectly captures the mind set I always adopt in dealing with adversity, and which I recommend anyone one who wants to become UNSTOPPABLE adopt as well:

Learn to hide your need from the world and show your skill.” – Jim Rohn

Simple and easy to remember isn’t it?

Yeah…but it is sooooo tough to apply.

Yet those who master the DOING of it end up with the uncanny ability of being UNSTOPPABLE.

That’s what I AM….

What will YOU be???
