PII 084: To Excel, Go Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

Succeeding in spite of adversity can be painfully hard and potentially traumatizing, but it can be done. One just needs to study, understand and abide by the universally applicable principles established in nature for us by the Creator.

What I’ve found from my experiences and observations over the past 2 decades as an adult working – initially – in paid and later in self-employment, is that many people miss this truth, and go running after rewards to be had, without doing the needed studying, understanding and abiding!

What I say here applies to ANY area of endeavour, no matter what it is you do.

Let me begin by stating, at the risk of sounding immodest, that I’ve routinely and repetitively defied various degrees of adversity to excel by following this rule in everything I have done, since I discovered it.

So the ideas I share here are based on real life achievements I’ve gotten under my belt. I KNOW what it takes, and am able to do it again and again, to achieve the results I want.

But I did not get to this level of proficiency overnight. It took time, and lots of hard work.

Initially I did most of it unconsciously, and then as I became a keen student of success philosophies, I honed my ability to do it consciously and at will.

My studies of success philosophies opened my eyes to the need to GIVE MORE than the average person does, if I want to reap more than others do.

It’s simple common sense isn’t it? Of course it is!

Yet one continues to see so many people who LIVE their lives doing the exact opposite and wondering why they never seem to achieve sustainable LONG TERM progress in their chosen fields of Endeavour.

Note here that the progress I refer to may be slow, but it will be measurable and it will be sustainable. You will KNOW that you’re experience it, and it will be clear, to you especially (others may be blind to it due to bias) that you are NOT retrogressing

So why do people want to get more without giving enough or more?

I argue that it’s what they learn from society as they grow up and live their daily lives.

Today, we live in an instant gratification world, where people indulge their impatient cravings by taking advantage of the PC and Internet technology driven conveniences available to be had.

This is why some employees show up at work and do the barest minimum specified in their job descriptions ALL year round, and STILL expect an end of year bonus in their pay slips.

Then when they do not get the bonus (some even demand a promotion based on how long they’ve been “there”!), they scream that they’ve been denied what it rightfully theirs.

That leaves the employer wondering if the employee is so afflicted by his/her entitlement mentality that s/he does not realize the company needs tangible contributions that go beyond the call of duty, to boost productivity and profits that can trigger bonuses and other rewards.

Now, some big companies that can afford it typically hand out some kind of fixed bonuses or increments at the year end. But that is the exception and not the norm.

Even in “rich” companies than can afford to dash out bonuses and extras, those who do more tend to get MORE than those who do not stretch themselves beyond the minimum.

Exceptional workplace contributions that boost the organization’s bottom line are what typically earn an employee such extra rewards.

It’s the same for those in the world of business, or self-employment: You need to add tangible value to get paid

Indeed, for this latter situation, the opportunities to get without giving enough or more are fewer, unlike the case of employee.

For the entrepreneur, when operating in a market where little or no corner cutting (like bribe giving or taking) is possible, the ability to go above and beyond the call of duty can become a most valuable asset for setting yourself apart from the competition.

The reason is simply because, just as it is with employees, people in business come from the society, and if society encourages them to give little to get a lot, they will display those traits in doing business with themselves and others.

The above understanding was what led me to focus on serving clients solutions I knew I had FANATICAL passion for providing

The need to do so became apparent to me after a few years as a startup entrepreneur in Nigeria’s Lagos.

My experiences made me realize even decision makers in organizations I was approaching seemed more interested something other than finding the best consultant to help the company they worked for!

So, I made up my mind that if I was to work with ANY client company, they would find me so resourceful and driven by relentless passion to go above and beyond the call of duty, to deliver what I promise, that they would not only give me repeat business (i.e. call me to do more), but also refer others.

And THAT has been my experience over the years.

This strategy I adopted is why I am able to boast, today, of client relationships lasting 7 years and longer – in a wide variety of markets starting from 2005/6 when I began to get a firm grip of what to offer.

Nothing beats being able to go above and beyond the call of duty to serve clients who VALUE and RESPECT you for what you do for them.

It goes without saying that I’ve had to weed out some bad “eggs” from my client list every now and then. Client attrition is a HEALTHY thing.

But my client recruitment process involves use of a series of screening systems that minimizes the need for me to do this often, as I tend to end up with people who are generally a good fit for me.

Once that happens, I know I it’s less likely that I’ll be wasting my time going above and beyond the call of duty to serve them.

Even if I provide the solution for FREE or at very low cost, I NEVER lose, because it’s my passion, and therefore always fun for me.

BUT…here’s the best – indeed my NUMBER ONE – reason for habitually going above and beyond the call of duty as a way of life:

This is my secret reason for doing this with so much relish…!

You see, routinely Going The Extra Mile (aka Going Above & Beyond The Call OF Duty) helps me GROW continually in my knowledge, skills and abilities, so that at any point in time, I am ALWAYS evolving into a smarter, stronger and more competent expert and person.

This makes me better prepared to serve EVEN more people than are already in my network. And all of that happens while I’m having fun doing what I LOVE!

See what I mean?

You simply cannot LOSE if you do this right:

I KNOW how to do it right – wand I’ve shared it in this piece (Need more? Click here to send me a message).

Start going above and beyond the call of duty, in anything you do, and you will enjoy the reward of being able to succeed in spite of (or defy!) adversity, in any form it may occur, and no matter how long it lasts,

Most people in the UK do not go to university – and maybe never will

Data suggests that the majority of the UK population will never go to university, finds Charlie Ball.

Almost everyone goes to university nowadays, everyone knows that.

Except that not everyone does and we rarely see accurate statistics about how many or what proportion of people actually do. It’s quite an important question, bound up with thorny issues of workforce skills, educational aspiration and, of course, how (and how much) the UK taxpayer funds our domestic higher education sector.

[FREE AUDIO PODCAST] True Stories About “Mind Games Playing” in Business – Including Tips About How to Protect Yourself Against Those Who Play Them! – by Tayo K. Solagbade, www.tayosolagbade.com

Mind games playing is more or less a way of life for MANY Nigerians – whether those living in the country or based abroad.

I say this based on YEARS of personal experiences and observations from interacting with people in Nigeria (often quite closely/for extended periods) in my business and personal life.

[TIP: You have a right to disagree with the assertion I’ve made above – feel free to jump up and down, and even tear your hair out. But if you wish to engage me in dicussion about the views I’ve expressed here, be sure to observe ALL the rules of polite and intelligent conversation. Thanks in advance :-)]

I’m NOT alone. There are others willing to say it like it is.

In particular, I’ve come across more than one non-Nigerian who has noticed this negative tendency while living/working with Nigerians.

For instance, an American expatriate who spent some years doing business in Nigeria, connected with me on Skype in 2012, after we’d met on LinkedIn. com and got talking about doing business in Nigeria.

What I liked about Greg M. (his real first name and initial for his surname) was that he was willing to NOT be Politically Correct or needlessly diplomatic.

He wasted no time in stating that one of the greatest frustrations he experienced (apart from erratic power supply) while still in Nigeria, as a business person was the preference most people he had to relate with, displayed for mind games of all kinds.

I could relate quite well with what he said, and I told him so. Today, very little has changed in that regard. Indeed, it’s that peculiar tendency that led to the pre-qualification steps I put in place in my sales leads generation process (which is now 100% online based) to screen people who reach out to me, so I can be sure they are NOT time wasters…or worse.

Click the link below this post to download my 1 hour Audio Podcast titled “True Stories About Mind Games Playing in Business”.

I bring my experience based knowledge and insights to bear in informing and educating relevant others, about the antics of naughty people in society, who play mind games with the intent to manipulate, deceive and exploit unsuspecting others.

These emotionally UN-intelligent individuals CAN (and WILL, if you let them!) use their mind games to (among other things):

  1. Make you work for them for LESS or NO pay…
  2. Get you to share your new/original ideas, so they can later pass them off as theirs to others (e.g plagiarism)…
  3. Establish a relationship with you, that they then exploit to make false claims to reap benefits they seek elsewhere (e.g a client that listed my name as an EMPLOYEE-in their business plan presentation for a bank loan without my knowledge or consent!).

These are people who live their lives manipulating others. And they need to be discouraged” – Tayo K. Solagbade

Like I stated in the audio, my ultimate purpose for sharing this post and podcast bundle is to provide a public service of sorts.

ALL the stories I’ve shared are 100% true (despite the shocking nature of some), and they happened to me, personally. So this is NOT based on hearsay.

Below: Sample verbatim text transcript excerpts from the audio podcact (click here to request download NOW)…

“…For those who are engaged in the habits I describe in this audio, the truth is that you’re NOT going to like what you’re going to hear now…but the truth needs to be said…”

“…I have this example I’m going to give you. Somebody calls up your phone line. That’s why I don’t do call backs (except it’s a number/caller I know). In developed societies when you see a missed call, there’s a rule. Generally you do a call back. If you’re really a smart business person you want to do a call back – because people don’t go around making…well do they have people who are crank callers, but when you’re in business, people don’t make a habit of, for example thing we call ‘flashing’.

It’s only in Nigeria we have flashing. The mobile phone came into Nigeria then people instantly developed a negative use for it. Somebody doesn’t have airtime to call you, and you want that person to pay you for product? He’s not willing to buy N100 airtime to call you and he flashes YOU, so that YOU can call HIM, and you think that person can do business with you?

That person is NOT qualified to do business with me. The mentality is already wrong.

Look, the things I sell are not cheap. But they are not expensive either. So, if somebody wants to buy something from me and cannot call me…There’s a missed call? So? Call me back! Call again!!

Let me see the effort before I begin to think I need to do a call back – because in Nigeria what happens is somebody who has absolutely no interest in buying anything from you just sees your profile on the web and says “Hmmm…look at this guy, na wao O. Let me just talk to him and even find out….bla bla bla…”

So he begins to tell you send me this, send me that (information etc), and you’ll think you’re talking to a human being – you won’t know you’re talking to some idiot who just wants to play with you. They do that a lot. There are people who don’t have better things to do with their time, than to just sit around and try to exert power over you.

They can make you jump through hoops because they think you are so (in need)…there is a mentality in Nigeria where people who are in business think they are supposed to jump through hoops to get business. (They think) that’s how to show that they are interested in getting business….

“…I have this series I wrote (see related articles below) some time ago. I think 2005, 2004, on a theme I titled “Entrepreneur Abuse’.  It was based on certain very nasty experiences I’d had (at the hands of clients/prospects) which I discovered were very commonly occurring in Nigeria, but which a lot of people in this part of the world just rationalize and assume saying ‘We don’t have a choice…we have to accept it”…

…(I say) You don’t have to accept it! I always tell people…even when I was crawling, when my brand was zero, when nobody knew me. When I did not have the kind of online presence that I have today, that enables me to get people to earn income from people who don’t see me in the flesh, I always told people:  YOU have a choice!”

PII 081: Whether You’re a Job Seeker/Employee or Business Owner You Need Marketing Skills

In this week’s issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas newsletter, I explain – based on my extensive studies and experiences in paid as well as self-employment, over the past 2 decades, why I believe smart MARKETING skills are crucial to success achievement in ANY area of life.

I once read somewhere that we’re all selling something. I agree.

Even if you’re not in business, you’re still selling something – and that’s often yourself and/or your ideas etc

In other words, we are all daily engaged in a continual process of interaction in which we try to get others to relate with us, in a way that we want.

You want your customer/client, friend, spouse, partner, kids and others you interact with – including the total stranger you meet – to think and act in ways you like or prefer.

When that happens, we generally feel satisfaction and pleasure – and our relationship with the individual concerned tends to experience a positive boost as a result.

In other words, the main purpose of marketing is to influence people to think and/or act in a way that YOU want.

The above can happen if you possess the needed skill and know how to use it.

Once you understand how to apply your marketing skills to your purpose, your chances of getting others to do (or give you) what you want, will be dramatically boosted.

From making people agree with you on a line of action to be pursued, to convincing them to pay you money for something you know or can do, the possibilities would be potentially limitless.

I say this as someone who succeeds by doing just that on a very regular basis. And I do it face to face as well as remotely (i.e. via phone, email etc).

Your marketing purpose could be one of a number of things – such as selling them something, or getting them to give you something, or do something for you etc.

Dale Carnegie’s nifty little book titled “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is one of several classics that I’ve read in a bid to improve my marketing abilities as an entrepreneur.

That book (which, in my opinion, everyone should read) explains – using clear language and lots of true stories – how one can win the confidence of others with good diction, and enthusiasm/a pleasing personality.

People who develop the ability to make the above happen for themselves on a regular basis will tend to achieve their goals more often than those who do not.

The reason is simple:

When you are able to get people in agreement with you, chances that they will be positively disposed to doing what you want or ask will be greater.

It is a well known fact that in order to sell anything, including an intangible idea, to another person, one must first of all win his/her trust.

Without smart marketing skills, it can be difficult to win trust.

“Marketing skills act as a lubricant during interpersonal interaction, towards development of trust – which then makes ‘sales’ happen.” – Tayo K. Solagbade

  1. Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” discusses how a person seeking paid employment can use a variety of “self-marketing” tools (e.g. resume) and strategies (e.g. phone calls, office visits etc) to get employers interested in him/her.
  1. As already noted above, a business owner will use marketing to move prospects closer to buying.

Now, we will all at some point fall into one of the two groups referred to above.

I therefore argue that coaching and training in the art of self-marketing, and marketing in general is something that should be provided as early as possible by society through ALL levels of formal schooling or education.

In other words, our schools need to incorporate formal marketing education, relevant to the needs of different age groups in our learning institutions, with practical aspects that enable learners observe and possibly participate in marketing activities, to reinforce what they are taught.

Proof that this is needed can be seen in the frequent difficulties that many school leaver (from primary to tertiary), often have when they enter society and are faced with the task of finding jobs (if they seek employment) or winning buyers/clients (if they choose to run a business).

No matter how brilliant a person is, if s/he does NOT know how to win others over, using his/her interpersonal skills, there is a good chance s/he will not achieve his/her full potentials.

This is a bigger problem for most people, than they are willing to admit.

And that’s why we see many cases of brilliant persons who fail to earn as much as less brilliant others.

Too often it’s because the former devoted too much time and effort learning to be brilliant at doing what they do, forgetting to spare some to develop proficiency in getting others to BELIEVE in their brilliance enough to pay them well for it!

So, let me ask you: Are you able to market yourself successfully to those who matter, towards achieving your desired goal?

Do you know what to do to get them to do what you want?

Do you know how to do it?

What about “when”. and “where” to do it?

Your answers to the above at any point in time will depend on a variety of factors.

You will therefore need to ensure that you have the competence to answer and act based on the answers you give under different circumstances.

That requires some form of preparation and training – a lot of which is currently not available via the formal schooling channel I referred to above.

This implies that YOU will have to explore alternative self-help avenues, like the books I mentioned earlier in this piece, and others – including audios. videos, as well as live learning events – plus mentors/coaches etc.

In addition to constantly challenging the status quo and influencing positive work changes, he built a reputation for using self-taught spreadsheet programming skills (starting with Lotus 1-2-3, and later moving to Excel Visual Basic) – in his spare time – to develop Automated Spreadsheet Applications to computerize manual report generation processes in the departments he worked. Over four(4) of his applications were adopted for brewery level reporting.

Tayo holds a B.Sc degree in Agricultural Extension Services from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, having graduated top of his class – with Second Class Upper Division honors – in 1992. He is an Associate Member of the UK Institute & Guild of Brewing, a 1997 National Finalist of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s(NIM) Young Managers’ competition, a Certified Psychometric Test Administrator for Psytech UK, innovator of Spontaneous Coaching for Self-Development™ (SCfS-D™), and Founder of the Self-Development Academy (SDAc).

[IMPORTANT NOTE:====

On 4th May 2014, Tayo’s 9 year old domain (Spontaneousdevelopment dot com), which hosted his website, was taken over by Aplus.net.

Within a few days however, Tayo used his advanced self-taught web development skills to build a SUPERIOR “reincarnation” of it the website http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

But updates are still ongoing to URLs bearing the old domain name in most of the over 1,000 web pages, and blog posts he’s published.

If you experience any difficulties finding a page or document, email Tayo at tksola dot com.

Click “Tayo, What Happened to SpontaneousDevelopmentDotCom ?” to read a detailed narrative about how the above event occurred :-))

Here’s an article Tayo wrote, to inspire others to defy adversity, and bounce back to even greater reckoning at what they do EVERY time:

And he wrote the one below, to explain why losing a domain name, no matter how old, NO LONGER determines your online success or otherwise:

[EXCEL HEAVEN VIDEO] Part 7 – Using In-Cell Drop Down Menus to Offer Users Access to Name Lists etc | How to Use Best Practice Design to Track Expense Totals

NB: See email (sent to club members) to download and watch the 2 part video tutorial for this week, which continues from that for last week.

In Part 1 demonstrate how in-cell drop down menus, like those created last week, for safely choosing dates from a list, can be used to offer users access to other list types e.g list of names etc.
In part 2 I demonstrate how to apply best practice worksheet design considerations in adding TOTALS  to columns in the expense section of the Imprest cashbook. This is done in a way that enables the user quickly, easily and conveniently reconcile the changing totals for each columnwith those in the paper source (e.g ledger) as s/he posts the data into the cells.
The example workbook used to create this week’s video tutorial was also emailed to Excel Heaven Club members.

[RECOMMENDED] This Google spreadsheets guru makes $4,000 a month on online courses

Many accountants and finance professionals (especially in this part of the world) fail to realize that they massively shortchange themselves by failing to develop spreadsheet programming skills, which can boost their ability to serve clients – and make a LOT more money!

This true story is what I consider a “Wake Up Call” for such people…

Here’s an excerpt/preview – ending with a link to the full report:

This Google spreadsheets guru makes $4,000 a month on online courses

“The clients would have huge amounts of data,” he said. “We would be sitting between the clients and the lawyers to try to interpret their data and understand what was happening with the transactions and the finances. So all my time was working with data sets in Excel, and as the datasets started getting larger and larger we started using SQL,” a programming language used to manage data. Slowly but surely, Collins began expanding his programming skills as he learned to write SQL queries in order to manipulate the data. He also started dabbling in VBA, another programming language that allows you to build applications within Excel.”

[RECOMMENDED] The rise of self-education and individual investment

The message contained in the article previewed/linked below, WILL resonate strongly with ANY person who has reflected deeply on the inadequacies of our conventional education systems – in meeting rapidly changing, technology driven educational needs of today’s “learners”.

If the society refuses to make the required changes to education that can be had, I argue that every INDIVIDUAL can – and should! – make the changes necessary for him/herself…and EVERY parent should do same for his/her kids!

The rise of self-education and individual investment

With university tuition costs rising and a programming skill shortage, should students consider investing their time to help bridge the skill set gap?

Formal education certainly does not come cheap — with student fees rising and fewer university places available, but less traditional methods and a sharper focus on skill sets rather than formal qualifications could benefit job hunters more than a degree and a point score on their resume.

[RECOMMENDED] 4 Things Every Woman Should Know About Starting A Business – by Kim Kiyosaki | Thursday, July 20, 2017 | Read Time = 3 minutes

[Estimated reading time for this article is 3 minutes. I’m a male business owner, and I found it most enlightening. If you’re a woman and think you lack the time to read it, THAT is a sign that you’re probably too busy for your own good, and actually NEED to consider the ideas offered in it by Kim Kiysaki]

4 Things Every Woman Should Know About Starting A Business

Now is the perfect time to take the leap to entrepreneurship.

Whether you’re sick of the soul-sucking rat race that is Corporate America, you have an exciting product or service to offer that could disrupt the marketplace, you’re re-entering the workforce after raising a family, or you’ve been told a hundred times that you would make a great entrepreneur, there’s just no reason to settle for a job you hate and an uncertain financial future in this day and age.

[RECOMMENDED] Why You Should Encourage Kids to be Rule Breakers – by Robert Kiyosaki

[TIP: If you truly LOVE your child, and want him/her to make it in life – especially FINANCIALLY – you WILL stop and read THIS…right to the end]

Once again I find myself MOVED to share another powerfully insightful best practice parenting ideas article from Robert Kiysaki’s Rich Dad blog.

The following excerpt is just one of many parts of this piece that resonates so much with me:

“So, there are two problems. Our kids want to create jobs, which is a vital need for our country, and instead of teaching our kids how to create jobs, our schools teach them how to get jobs.

In the process, they build into them an employee mindset, which is one that is inclined to follow the rules instead of break them. This breaks their spirit, and it squashes their entrepreneurial dreams.” – Robert Kiyosaki, in “Why You Should Encourage Kids to be Rule Breakers” [Read the full article by clicking the link or image below]

It just amazes me how despite all the practical real world relevant, and life changing sense this many has continued to make with his writing, MANY MANY parents in this part of the world, who cannot claim NOT to have encountered his work, continue to put their kids, blindly through conventional schooling, with all it’s harmful aspects INTACT!!!

Suffice to say that MY kids will continue to spared THAT kind of damage…and you can be sure they ARE being TAUGHT to be unapologetic rule breakers…like I AM :-)

[RECOMMENDED] Fake LinkedIn profiles used by hackers | Facebook Now Automatically Detects Imposter Accounts

If you’re like most people you would welcome invitations from more people who want to connect with you on various social media platforms you use.

But – as recent experiences of many continue to show – if you indiscriminately say “YES” to such invites, sometimes some of those “people” may end up being “fake people” – using phony accounts.

Most of us know this can happen on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, but only few of us are aware that it ALSO happens on LinkedIn – and has been with increasing frequency over the years!

The challenge, for you, will be how to detect such imposters and avoid accepting them into your network, so they do not cause you major pain or worse, down the line.

I’ve compiled a listing of articles that share expert tips and strategies for detecting these fake users and protecting one’s self from them.

Below I publish preview of a feature article, ending with a link to the full piece as well as links to several others articles on the same theme:

1. Fake LinkedIn profiles used by hackers

Mr O’Brien had some tips for LinkedIn users worried that they might have befriended a hacker.
“You can do a reverse image search by dragging and dropping the profile picture into Google Images and see what it brings up.

“Copying and pasting the job information in Google can also reveal whether it has been taken from somewhere else.”

Iranian hackers
Twitter and Facebook also have problems with fake accounts but LinkedIn seems to be particularly attractive to hackers, said Mr O’Brien.

“It reveals the greater sophistication of cyber-criminals that they are prepared to play the long game by gaining information for future attacks in this way,” he said.
It is not the first time that researchers have pointed out the dangers of fake LinkedIn profiles.

2. Facebook Now Automatically Detects Imposter Accounts

A feature that will automatically alert you if someone is impersonating your Facebook profile is the latest security enhancement for users of the world’s largest social network. Approximately 75 percent of Facebook profiles are now automatically alerted when imposters use their profile photo and user name to create a fake account, Mashable reports.

If an imposter is detected, the system automatically alerts the real user account. That person can then flag the profile as an impersonation, and Facebook’s security team is notified to delete the account.

Impersonation is not a widespread security threat for Facebook users, but women in particular are vulnerable to imposters who create fake profiles to harass them.fbk-fake

Below are links to other educative pieces, written by competent experts, that I recommend you read, to be informed and armed to protect yourself against these phonies!

1. Fake LinkedIn accounts want to add you to their professional network

2. 3 Stunningly Good LinkedIn FAKE Profiles

3, How to spot a fake profile on LinkedIn

I’m on a mission to compile and feature as many informative and educative articles as I can find on this subject to help any interested persons.

Apart from the fact that it is the right thing to do, I also do this because I want to help others avoid the needless waste of time and effort those who do these silly things cause otherwise serious minded persons – like myself – to incur online.

Indeed, over the past few weeks I’ve had a rash of pranksters and prospective hackers try various ways to get at me, and it’s been most irritating. But I often know enough of what to do to protect myself. Yet I never stop taking up opportunities to learn more (hence my efforts to research and study this problem). I recommend you adopt a similar mental attitude.
