Over the past decade I have written articles, developed best practice systems and developed built low cost custom software to help farm CEOs.

To consolidate my efforts, especially as I continue to win clients (and subscribers) from within and outside Africa, I also compile my write-ups into eBooks, for easy reference.

A growing number of farm business owners (and those aspiring) have been asking for copies of several of my past articles. So this is a good way to help them find what they have in once place.

10 Practical Strategies To Help Your Employees Produce Better Results

To get your team members to put in their BEST efforts at all times, you need what I call a Workplace Performance Improvement philosophy. One that will inspire them to willingly do their jobs AND even take up MORE as the need to do so becomes obvious – without seeing it as extra work! I discuss ten (10) strategies you can employ to make the foregoing happen.

1. Promote Creativity

Encourage an atmosphere for creativity to flourish. This can be done by actively engaging the minds of employees by involving them in taking crucial decisions about issues concerning the way they do their jobs.

Additionally, requesting their contributions towards solving problems affecting their jobs – and recognising/rewarding them accordingly – would stimulate creativity. Invite them to make and/or send in ideas/suggestions.

Be receptive to them as they do so. Apply tact in rejecting “bad ideas” to avoid withdrawal.

2. Discourage “Blame”

You will need to explore effective ways of telling them what YOU want. It will also help greatly if you create an atmosphere where BL:AME is NEVER welcome and where instead the focus is on problem analysis/solving for IMPROVED productivity.

For instance you would encourage everyone to concern themselves with WHAT went wrong and WHY – and NOT with WHO DID IT.

In this way, when the WHO issue arises during problem solving, people responsible for the workplace activity/process under scrutiny will feel safe enough to admit where they erred, thereby helping the team QUICKLY UNDERSTAND and solve the problem.

3. Entrench Informal On-The-Job Coaching

What is your mental attitude about each employee’s ability? Do you believe you can help them become better or have you given up on them as “unchangeable” or ‘hopeless”?

I suggest you adopt the former attitude because NO one human being can come to you as a perfect employee. It will often be up to you to “guide” those who work with you to do so in THE manner you believe will help the organisation get the results it NEEDS.

You need to enhance the skills of your employees by providing (and encouraging) spontaneous job-based coaching to complement whatever formal training they are exposed to.

For instance you would latch on to ANY opportunity to carryout informal coaching of your reports etc, towards helping them understand how management utilises the information they document, and why it is so important for documentation to be accurate and complete.

4. Employ Multi-dimensional Peer Pressure To Enhance Best Practices

You could tactfully/subtly use peer pressure to inspire positive attitudinal changes amongst the workforce. It is normal in most workplace to have “Star” workers and average workers.

The challenge for you will be to find a way to make the “Star” worker share(or “infect” others with) his/her expertise, knowledge and positive work ethics. With proper encouragement, you will find that such individuals readily develop the instinct to help others perform better on the job.

The other average workers are likely to see the “recognition/respect” the “Star” worker enjoys, and consequently appreciate his/her efforts to help them. Plus they would be interested in acquiring improved competence through him/her.

Properly done, this strategy can greatly reduce the amount of direct effort you and other “leaders” need to put in to get improved on-the-job performances.

5. Insist That Everyone See The Big Picture

You will need to insist your team members ALWAYS remember to view their jobs from a broader perspective and not narrow into their micro activities.

Task each individual in a specific unit of the department for instance to study what goes on in the other units in the department even though s/he does not have to work there(yet). They should make it their business to know/understand what the next man’s job involves.

This is important because many times they have to interface with the person on the other side of the fence in doing their own jobs.If they understand what his/her job entails they will more readily appreciate how their actions (or inactions) can affect the person.

Getting them to do this will break down the mental barriers that many people build because they work in physically separate divisions or sections of the same organisation. .

The result will be that communication happens more readily/freely thereby making it possible for workplace activities to proceed more successfully to the company’s benefit.

6. Endorse ‘Leading” And Make “Bossing” Unfashionable

Make it obvious that “No bosses” are wanted in your workplace, and that only leaders are welcome.

The difference between these two types of people is that the former seek to DOMINATE others in a bid to get them to deliver results, while the latter work to INSPIRE others to perform.

7. Advocate Intelligent Mistake Making

You will need to discard the “Shoot the messenger” mentality – if it exists in any form. You MUST make it SAFE for people to make mistakes.

If you allow a blame culture to take root in your workplace, people will begin to HIDE their mistakes, and will rarely ever own up – causing major problems for the company.

Mistakes that do not get stopped via corrective feedback to those responsible will get repeated and lead to customer complaints, losses/wastes etc.

If you want people to develop on the job, you must be willing to accept that they WILL make mistakes on the job – because they are human! Your role will be to help them learn from those mistakes and work hard to AVOID repeating them.

Anytime a person fails or makes a mistake, s/he must be made to identity and understand the cause. S/he must learn to use failure as a learning platform.

8. Create Micro-Businesses

You could get individual departments to see themselves as mini businesses within the larger company. And the department heads can choose to regard the different units within their departments as MICRO businesses within each departmental MINI business.

Each micro business will have a MISSION which would basically be to achieve a RESULT that must be delivered. Or to complete a TASK that must be performed successfully.

All of which will enable other micro business(es) and the MINI business to achieve their own goals – which are all linked to the organisation’s overall purpose.

At each level (Macro, Mini and Micro), the relevant team members would decide on their individual mission statements – drawing from what they have to do within the bigger departmental unit.

This approach allows all members of the organisation to get a more tangible indication of what is required of them. They are therefore better able to understand what they need to do and why.

9. When Introducing Change(s), Ensure Those Affected UNDERSTAND Why

How do you go about introducing/implementing change that you deem necessary? When people do not understand why the way they work – for instance – is being changed, they can resist it sometimes in subtle ways that can have very harmful consequences for the organisation.

You need to take pains to explain to the team members – especially those affected (positively or negatively) by it – WHY the change is being made, so they ‘feel” involved and understand the THINKING behind the decision.

Over time, their appreciation of management’s expectations from them (and its “thinking”) in relation to their jobs will improve.

10. Make Open & Honest Communication A Well Advertised Policy

In many organisations – especially those with large workforces – sometimes the majority of employees tend to hold the (mistaken?) belief that the company’s profits are exorbitant, and that management is unjust and unfair.

This is what causes the typical situation where employees unions maintain a confrontational posture towards the company’s leadership – viewing decisions/policies with suspicion etc.

It would help if you – and others in senior/leadership positions – make a conscious effort to formally (and informally) communicate management’s positive sides. More importantly, your actions should inspire trust and confidence amongst the workforce.

Employees should for instance not (or no longer?) have to contend with what someone once described as “closed doors and tense, guarded statements“.

As one poster I came across on a factory wall once put it : “Limited Information or No Information = NEGATIVE information“.

When the employees speak with one member of the senior management team about “what’s going on”, the information s/he gives MUST be reasonably consistent with what another “senior” person would supply at any other time on the same subject.

FINAL WORDS : Central to all that I have said above is the need to create an atmosphere of mutual trust, respect and appreciation between and among ALL members of the organisation’s team

Make your people feel recognised – and reward them when possible – for the effort they make every day to do their jobs well.

Doing this, in addition to applying other ideas like those outlined above is very likely to make your employees deliver more VALUE on their jobs everyday they come in – without need for financial incentives of any sort.

Start Something You Never Need to Retire From (Hint: Why We All Need to Emulate Muhammad Ali – the BOXER, and the MAN!)

“When you saw me in the boxing ring fighting, it wasn’t just so I could beat my opponent. My fighting had a purpose. I had to be successful in order to get people to listen to the things I had to say.” – MUHAMMAD ALI, The Soul of a Butterfly

I recently watched a video – click here to watch now – of Muhammad Ali (at age 35) speaking to a large audience (comprising adults and kids). A young boy asked him “What will you do when you retire?” Ali’s answer proved his boxing genius was matched by an acute sense of “life purpose”.

Basically, Ali told the young mane and the listening audience how he’d emerged from deep reflection to realize that after he retired from boxing, the best way to spend his time would be helping others.

Now, he did not just state it simply in a few words. Ali – always a man who practiced what he preached – took the audience on what I would call an intellectual journey of self-discovery. Especially as it relates to finding one’s purpose in line with the creator’s will.

In order to prepare their minds, Ali started by asking if there were people in the audience who believed in God. Then he asked to see the hands of any who did NOT believe there was a God. In both cases there were hands raised.

To one of those closest to him amongst the latter group, Ali then used the analogy of how the different parts of the world came into existence.

But before that he took asked if man made objects we use daily – like cups etc – could have made themselves. The answer was no.

Following upon that, he then asked if those who claimed not to believe in God could explain how such well planned collection of parts that make up the earth came into being.

Ali went on to conclude that the amazing complexity of the earth itself provided ample proof that a superior and supreme form on intelligence, well above ours, was at work.

So, for him, he said that was why he was convinced of God’s existence.

And as a result, he knew there had to be a purpose for which God had made him. Ali added that if Hell – where those who fail to do God’s will are said to be sent – existed, he would rather work to NOT go there after he dies.

In order to achieve that goal of making heaven, Ali said he had thought of the active years in his life outside those spent sleeping etc – and decided he would use his fame and success to help others e.g. by partnering with NGOs and other support groups.

AND THAT, he said was what he would do after he retired from boxing.

What Amazing Foresight from a Man of Real Vision!

Today, everybody knows that Ali has kept his word with regard to what he said on that day. Several decades ago as a young man.

And his fame has not waned up till now. Neither has the respect and admiration AND love he enjoys from people across the world diminished. This is one man with the rare ability to make people forget their differences. The Muhammad Ali Centre continues to carry on the Ali legacy of helping those who need it.

And Ali remains a central figure – even now in his old age, and despite the health challenge he has had to deal with.

His words spoken over the past decades that get shared on the wall of his Facebook page continue to inspire millions across the world. I, for one continue to draw MASSIVE inspiration from this man’s words that I read as a fan on his page.

Each of Us Needs to Emulate Ali – By Choosing to Start Something We Won’t Need to Retire From

Ali did that. He looked beyond his vocation, to carve out a vision – and a mission from the vision.

He had a message for the world, and he was determined to share that message. But he knew the world would not easily pay attention to a person who was not NOTEWORTHY. So, he let that need to make them LISTEN to him drive his boxing efforts.

That led him to explore all sorts of creative ways to draw attention to himself while boxing.

For example, Ali’s habit of using rhyming poems to communicate – especially to opponents – was unique. Till date, no other boxer has succeeded in doing what he did so well.

As a result, even when he was not boxing, he remained in demand.

People wanted not just to SEE him. They also wanted to hear him speak. To know what he thought about issues affecting them. Even to know what his stand was.

Evidence that Ali’s thinking was as described above can be found in material he shares from his archives even today.

For instance, not long ago, he shared a photo of himself, with a quote that helped me better understand why he chose to adopt such a boldly vocal approach to his own brand of boxing.

When you saw me in the boxing ring fighting, it wasn’t just so I could beat my opponent. My fighting had a purpose. I had to be successful in order to get people to listen to the things I had to say. – MUHAMMAD ALI, The Soul of a Butterfly [Click here for source]

Each of us can do what Ali did i.e Use your VISION for the future, to drive yourself to EXCEL at what you do NOW!

No matter what it is. Think of how you can link what you succeed at today, to what you can do well into your later years that can make the lives of others better.

That desire to achieve your long term vision will help you do what it takes to excel in your more immediate pursuits.

Then later on, you will find that the platform of success you arrive on in future, will make it easy to carry on with your bigger vision/mission right into your old age.

That’s why Ali’s impact continues to be felt even today – LONG after he retired from boxing. Each one of us can make our impact felt the same way too – if we emulate the great Muhammad Ali!

“I try not to speak about all the charities I help, because I believe we can only be truly generous when we expect nothing in return.” – Muhammad Ali

Every Time You Achieve Success, Find Out Why, So That You Can Reproduce It.

I often groan when I hear a celebrity answer the question about the secret of his/her success by saying something like “Na God O!” (i.e. “It’s God’s handiwork!”).  You see, I also succeed with God’s help. BUT, I KNOW there’s more to success achievement than saying “Na God O!” suggests!

And this is where successful people in developed societies often differ from us.

Read an interview with them, and you’ll come away with practical ideas – sometimes step by step instructions – of how to proceed in trying to replicate the success they are celebrated for.

That is why they are able to write books that offer actionable advice on how to succeed the way they have. It is why they are able to demystify their own success achievement for those following them to learn from, and improve upon.

In our societies across Africa too many successful people rarely offer tangible insights into what made them succeed. But to be fair, sometimes they actually do not know – or have not given it enough thought to articulate it into any useful form.

The truth is NOT all those who say they worship God are able to produce performances that will make them become successful/celebrated personalities!

And that is because there are so many specific actions/steps that successful persons take that those NOT as successful do not take as frequently and/or as diligently.

When The Right Questions Are Asked, More Useful Answers Emerge

I believe that many of the interviewed authentic celebrities I refer to would have loved to give more insight into HOW and WHAT made them succeed, if the right kinds of “probing” questions had been asked of them.

Unfortunately, often times their interviewers are not alert to the need to do this for the enhanced benefit of their viewing/listening audiences.

Anyone who has read transcripts of the popular “Conversations With Millionaires” series will understand what I mean.

I refer to the ability of certain interviewers to ask “probing” questions that get answers OUT OF successful persons, IN A WAY that gives listeners more accurate insight into HOW and WHY the celebrities succeeded.

“Clearer Answers” which would then guide those aspiring to follow the same, proven path, even if with modifications or adjustments.

As they say, “Success leaves a trail…”

Our celebrities need to be “helped” to “remember” what they did (& how), in the manner I propose above.

This is because many of them never really sat down (after having succeeded) to THINK about what they actually did to get the results they wanted – and for which they subsequently became celebrated.

In Africa, We Do Not Currently Investigate & Document Achieved Success ENOUGH

This is a fact.

In our society, if we want success to happen for MORE people, MORE frequently, we need to establish and rigorously maintain systems to INVESTIGATE and DOCUMENT what makes celebrated members of society succeed.

This is so that others who aspire can use the information recorded to achieve similar or greater successes – FASTER and with LESS EFFORT.

One over riding benefit is that society will as a result develop faster, contributing to a better world.

The problem is that in our society, we are too much of “DOERS” – and LESS of thinkers!

Each person is so self focused that s/he hardly ever gives a thought to how s/he can make the journey shorter, and less difficult for those who follow.

Tell him/her to GO for a particular goal, and s/he will.

But most often it will be done in a haphazard manner, and with little or no effort to ANALYSE experiences and document lessons learned for future reference/guidance.

The Result of Doing So Much Without Thinking Enough is: Poor Repeatability & Reproducibility Of Achieved Successes

Following from the above, when things fall in place, s/he takes it in his/her stride without sparing a thought for HOW to make those same things fall in place like THAT again in future – repeatedly.

A direct consequence of that inadvertent oversight, is that when things eventually go WRONG, s/he once again has to adopt the trial and error approach used in the past, until, if s/he is lucky, ANOTHER break through occurs.

For many who use this haphazard approach, it possibly works often. However, compared to the alternative proposed in this article, it can be quite costly in terms of time, effort, and even money.

Summary: Below I list three (3) compelling reasons to AVOID using such a haphazard approach:

1. The stress/strain that will arise from recovering from the problems occasioned by the use of a trial and error approach will wear you down – making the “journey to success” more PAINFUL than it should be.

2. You will be inefficient – because it takes you LONGER and costs you MORE time, effort, resources etc, to get the same results.

3. You won’t improve significantly – meaning you may never become good enough to beat your own “Personal Best”. Look at it this way: Only a sprinter who measures and knows her best 100 metres time is 9.99 seconds can AIM to run faster and therefore cross the line at LESS than that time. To achieve that goal, she will then have to CHECK what she can do better or differently to INCREASE her running speed, then TRY it out, UNTIL she succeeds.

The above potentially negative outcome of failing to investigate and understand why you succeed, is that you will LACK the means to EXPAND or GROW.

This could end up giving critics and/or cynics an opportunity to “question” your success.

Evidence to confirm that what I have said in this article is true, can be readily found when one looks at the number of World Champion Long Distance runners that have come out of an African country like Kenya.

Almost yearly, that country produces World Class athletes who gain quick prominence in international circles.

This happens because Kenya has a SYSTEM in place that enables it to REPEAT and REPRODUCE its athletic successes. I have listened to interviews conducted with athletes from that country, and the answers they gave to questions asked confirm this.

Final Words: Check Yourself – Do You Know How to Reproduce Your Success?

If you were to look at yourself, your organisation, your society or your country from a similar perspective, is it possible that there are areas where the success(es) achieved in the past now appear to have been just a “flash(es) in the pan”?

IF YES, maybe it’s time you (and/or others concerned), sat down to INVESTIGATE and DOCUMENT why you succeeded back then, so that you can REPRODUCE it NOW and into the future.

Deciding How Much Your Startup Poultry Farm Needs (Hint: Should Not Depend on How Rich Your Prospective Investor Is!)

What should influence your decision about how much funds to ask for in your start-up poultry layer farm business plan? Does the size of your prospective investors pockets need to be a factor in deciding what scale you start your enterprise at?

This article features excerpts from suggestions I emailed to a recent client on this theme.

It’s not just the money that concerns me, but also the experience and competence you will need “in-house” to handle the flock size to PROFITS (which is what really matters in the end!).

For instance, consider a business plan in which the poultry house will take up to 2,500 birds at P.O.L (i.e. Point Of Lay).

The question is would you be able to cope with that large a flock size in your 1st year and given your experience level (i.e. if you’ve not done it before)?

Poultry farming can be a delicate enterprise when one is still in a learning phase.

If you’re still holding down a 9 to 5 job – like more people venturing into it these days – it means you’ll have to do it part time.

You may not find it easy to to cope with day to day running for the first 15 month cycle, given that you’re still not fully free, plus you’ll be depending on a 3rd party.

My point is: the projections in a business plan are to serve as a guide. What happens on the farm may not be as straight forward.

This is why we have people who launch their poultry farms with no business plans, and they do well, while some others don’t.

The difference is often in the daily hands on management.

Handling 2,000 laying birds to make profits takes a lot more than handling 1,000.

The way I see it, you would be better off trying out for say 500 birds in one scenario and 1,000 birds in the other.

With each, you can tell prospective investors that you plan to scale up by 50% in the 2nd year.

This would be more realistic, given your experience.

Starting conservatively will often be a wise thing to do – even if you have the funds to start with twice as much

Incidentally, several of the clients I have now requesting my software told me they started with 500 to 1,000, and are now “expanding” after the 1st or 2nd year with those numbers.

Hence their need to formulate their own feed (using my ration formulator) and/or also track and trend the birds performance (using my poultry farm manager)

As your flock size increases in year 2 or 3, cost of feeding will need finer control to boost profit margins, hence you would aim to buy less commercial feed and make more of your own formulated feed at feed mills.

Doing the above will require closer hands on management that I anticipate you may need time to master from your 1st year, given that it’s your first outing.

Hopefully you see what I mean.

The concern I have is to get you to understand why your decision of scope or scale to startup should NOT be informed by how big the pockets of your prospective investor are.

Instead you should dwell on how good your chances of making a success of the venture are!

Incidentally, a smart thinking investor with integrity (e.g. one who worked hard, smart and honestly to make his money) is likely to appreciate the need to start conservatively, as being proposed here, for the first year, so you gain valuable know how and experience to scale up more profitably in the 2nd year.

This is livestock rearing my brother – profitable, but potentially risky as well!

Here’s a true story to help you put this in perspective:

A single oversight which led to an outbreak of Salmonella infection in a past client’s farm somewhere in South West Nigeria, last year left him struggling to get 25% egg laying from 4,000 birds that had been laying 70 to 80% each day for months before then!

At a point he was spending more than he was getting from them, on feeding, medication etc. And they were still dying!

Eventually, to cut the losses, they slaughtered most of them, and focused on a new batch of P.O.L they had luckily been rearing from day old.

Now imagine if he had been using investors funds and not his own money?

That unplanned setback would have delayed paying any returns to the investor.

And it happened because of
poor management e.g. birds found a way to drop from their (old) cages into the droppings on the floor and began pecking and walking around in the droppings etc!

Instead of isolating them, some farm hands put those same birds back in the cages with others. This kept happening with no one thinking anything of it.

It was a disaster waiting to happen. And it eventually did, with a sudden marked drop in eggs output for about 2 weeks, followed by a rash of deaths.

My client was still in paid employment then, in a distant location – many hours away in another country. By the time I got to the farm (he asked his driver to take me down), the deep freezer was filled with hurriedly slaughtered layers!

The farm manager told me they were almost begging people to buy the frozen ones to free up space to keep more. And she was a trained graduate of agric, who had been managing the place for about 2 years (plus pigs and fish farms)!

So no one is immune to making mistakes. It’s hands on diligence that counts most, and ultimately determines success or failure with livestock – especially poultry.

And that explains why some people who did not even study agric, and who also had no business plans at startup have often succeeded in livestock farming.

They do it hands on, diligently, and take no chances – because their life savings are often invested!

My purpose here is to get you to understand that we’re dealing with living things here, which if not well handled can under perform or even die.

This is a very different scenario from investing in contract supply of imported rice, mobile phone, laptops or diesel – as you can imagine!

My role as a consultant is to offer my insights based on experience and know-how, to guide my clients in making what will hopefully be wise and profitable choices in the long run.

Once I’ve done that, my conscience stays clear.

So to round up, I’m asking you to think more CAREFULLY about what you can realistically handle to deliver profitable returns on – based on the plan I’ve given you, and what I’ve told you here.

When you succeed 1st time around, there will be an established basis on which to ask your investor to shell out more – if needed. And he’s likely to do so gladly, if the results you have to show are encouraging!

That’s how I see it: Prove yourself with a little first e.g. 500 and 1,000 as the 2 start-up scenarios.

Then you’ll be able to scale up, building on valuable experience you’ve gained – and even your investor will see good reason to go along with you.

Having said all the above…it will ultimately be YOURS to decide. If you wish to start big, go ahead.

Just be sure to proceed as carefully as possible.

Know also, that whatever you decide to do, will most likely have irreversible consequences in the end.

Hopefully, you’ll like what you get.

Good luck!

Smart Web Marketing Wins Profitable Farm Business Buyers [Hint: Poultry Farm Business Plan Preparation Service]

2 days ago I got a pleasant surprise when a “Production Metallurgist” with a Namibian firm sent me this message via TayoSolagbade.com:

“My boss gave me your ebook on the 25 articles on self-development as a present. However, I am struggling to contact you in order to get the links in the book to become functional. Can you possibly e-mail me the contact form so that I can send you a copy of the invoice. As it stands, I do not have access to all the articles in the ebook.”

It was the first time ever that I would be getting a message from one of many who had bought my 25 Articles PDF Ebook collection from my www.lulu.com/sdaproducts online store – since 2006!

Click now to visit the online store

Before now, I only got the payment alerts sent by Lulu.com. Not once have I ever been able to identify those who purchased my books.

The Lulu.com system – for obvious security reasons – does not permit that. However, it does allow us sellers to setup auto response messages in our online stores, to be delivered to buyers.

In mine, I invite the buyer to contact me if s/he needs help making use of the book etc.

Below: The web form message sent to me by the buyer…

Hi,

Thanks for your message.

Send me the invoice via this email address.

Or if you prefer, the main website contact form is at www.tayosolagbade.com/contact.htm

It would also help if you:

A. Attach the ebook you got from your boss as a gift

B. Provide further clarifications about your needs. For instance you indicated your “subject of interest” in your form submission (below) to be “poultry farming”. But my 25 articles ebook, which you got, caters to a multidisciplinary theme that does not directly deal with farm business, talk less poultry (?).

Look forward to your response.

Hi Tayo,

Attached, please find the ebook and the invoice. I originally became interested when I read your article – Practical Farm Business Performance Calculations and thought that I could find an example of the work you done on excel in this regard. I viewed your video last night but I would appreciate it very much if you could probably forward me the following information:

1) A copy of the Poultry Laying Business Plan with calculations which you once wrote for a customer (I intend to start up with 2500 layers) and could possibly use your plan to guide me.

2) A List of parameters (apart from the 3 parameters you already alluded to in your article) which I can use in my spreadsheet to optimally manage my laying business.

I really enjoyed the ebook and downloads from your website.

Regards,

<name removed for privacy>

When I got his above response, with the attached PDF he had purchased and the invoice sent to his “boss”(who purchased it on his behalf) by the Lulu.com payment system, I knew I was dealing with the right person

Next, I sent him the first of a planned 2 part response as follows:

Subject: Re: Re(Your Enquiry): 25 Articles Ebook…

Thanks for getting back <name removed>

Seen the file, invoice, and your request.

First off, I think the intro in the pdf may have been a bit misleading.

All 25 articles are actually already included full length in the pdf ebook. That’s why its length is over 140 pages.

Simply keep scrolling downwards and you’ll eventually come to the first of the 25 full length write-ups.

The preview section in the ebook was only included to give an idea of the other articles that were available on my website at time.

I’ve since moved them to my daily multidisciplinary blog at http://www.tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets

When I respond in my next email to your other requests, I’ll attach an updated version of the 25 version of the ebook, with click able links to the other articles in their new locations.

I’ll also add links to much more recent farm business articles I’ve since written, that you may find useful.

With kindest regards,

Tayo

The above situation turned out to be a good opportunity to do something I ought to have done a long time ago i.e. to update URLs and other contact details in the PDF ebook.

Since I lost my 9 year old domain – spontaneousdevelopment.com on 4th May 2014, I have been unable to find extra time to do the needed cleaning up in my other information products.

Ironically, one reason for this is the fact that since I adopted my tayosolagbade.com domain name, and began re purposing my website content on it, the leads generation I’ve been getting has really shot up.

I’ve said that much in subsequent articles – like THIS one (click).

My online sales (orders from buyers in my online store for my books and payments from clients for my Excel-VB software and services (e.g. business plan writing, web marketing etc) have increased.

Add to that the demand for my web marketing services by 2 new clients here in Cotonou, and you may understand why I’ve NOT been able to clean up my bylines in my Ezinearticles.com articles, talk less of updating the same in my e-books.

Thankfully, this buyer reaching out to me with my ebook made me dig in and do an much needed update. Now, I just have to make out time to upload it to replace the old one in my online store.

For now, I’ve sent the updated ebook to the above mentioned lady, as an email attachment.

And I also addressed the 2 requests he made…

Below: This afternoon, 2 days after sending him part 1 of my response, I followed up with the 2nd part of my response – see below

Excerpts from the response I sent to him, which I believe other farm business enthusiasts will find useful – hence my decision to share it here.

Hi <name removed for privacy>

Thanks for your requests.

First of all, find attached a cleaned up version of the 25 Articles PDF Ebook you bought.

I hope it makes for a more friendly reading experience.

When I can find the time, I will upload it to replace the one still in the online store.

Now, to the other requests you made…

Your Question 1 – You asked that I forward to you:

“A copy of the Poultry Laying Business Plan with calculations which you once wrote for a customer (I intend to start up with 2500 layers) and could possibly use your plan to guide me.”

===

Attached is a zipped folder named “Riaan-Question1.zip” containing the generic business plan preview documents I will be offering for FREE download on my website in a few days – once I finish setting up the sales/squeeze page:

Take a look through. I have taken out certain sections and left others in – but mostly blank tables and labels.

[Note to reader: If you’d like to view the above mentioned zipped folder’s contents, click here to send me a request.]

Note that the performance indicators featured in the tables are discussed in the articles I’ve linked to in response to your second question below.

You see, it so happens that the business plan I dispatched to the client is what I have already repackaged as a template to be sold to interested Farm CEOs (and those aspiring).

Due to the in-depth nature of this particular client’s project, I came to the decision that I can use a smart MS Excel projections workbook, in conjunction with a market survey questionnaire I developed, to help clients prepare comprehensive business plans.

All they need to do is purchase the template bundle (the full 24 page generic business plan with a one page micro version. Once that happens, I then send the buyer a questionnaire with which to collect data I will need for updating the dynamic projection tables in MS Excel.

The questionnaire will also get responses relevant to the client’s industry and market description etc, which are needed to complete other sections of the plan.

Using that info, I will customize the full plan, and produce a micro version, which will both be dispatched to the client in editable MS Word format. I will also send the MS Excel workbook containing all the projection tables with the data and formulas intact.

The client will be able to make changes as s/he may wish.

On the offer/sales page I will state the above benefits and process.

You are getting to know about it ahead of time because of your enquiry.

If you’d like to take up this offer, it’s for a FEE of N50, 000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) – payment required 100% up front.

You may use www.xe.com or www.coinmill.com to do a conversion to your currency.

====

Your Question 2 – You asked that I forward to you:

A List of parameters (apart from the 3 parameters you already alluded to in your article) which I can use in my spreadsheet to optimally manage my laying business.

Below is the download link to a zipped folder named “Riaan-Question2.zip” – containing 2 workbooks:

Riaan-Question2.zip- Click to download now

A. 5PowerfulTools.xls

This contains a sample template that explains how to compute certain Farm Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) discussed in an article I submitted to a 3rd party website in 2012.

Here’s the link to the article titled “5 Powerful Tools for Accurately Measuring Your (Farm) Business’ Health”

http://nigeriabusinesscommunities.com/features/5-powerful-tools-for-accurately-measuring-your-farm-business-health.html

The article uses the contents of the workbook to explain the calculation of each KPI – offering a download link at the end for the reader to view the workbook.

B. Figures1to4.xls

This workbook contains screen shots (4 of them) from different interfaces of my Excel-VB Driven Poultry Farm Manager software.

Click the link below to watch 16 video tutorials that show the app at work – including an automated chart generation interface for trending Hen Day Percentage (HDP) for layers

Incidentally, that software was built to automate the routine DAILY, WEEKLY and MONTHLY computation of the parameters described in my Practical Farm Business Performance Calculations article that you read.

This Figures1to4.xls workbook is actually linked to, from a more recent article titled “5 Essential Poultry Layer Farm Production Records” – that I got approved as a guest post in 2012 on Africabusinesscommunities.com. Click below to read it.

http://nigeriabusinesscommunities.com/features/five-essential-poultry-layer-farm-production-records.html

The article highlights calculation methods for 5 important farm production records I recommend every poultry farmer diligently capture.

Doing so will enable him/her take timely farm planning decisions that will result in the best possible performance.

PS: Due to my domain name change from spontaneousdevelopment.com to tayosolagbade.com – the links in those articles no longer work.

I’ve informed the webmaster for Africabusinesscommunities.com about the need to change the URLs, but have gotten no response.

But I plan to use both articles in special e-book collection I’m working on. So, it’s kind of a blessing in disguise :-))

Now, in case you’ve not read it, click the link below to learn what happened to my previous domain:

Final Words: My new template based Poultry Farm business plan preparation service will soon go live!

In yesterday’s article, I announced that I was preparing a special business plan preparation service bundle – and that it was based on the recent elaborate business plan preparation project I recently completed for a new client in Nigeria.

Now, like I said in the email above, this new service will soon be formally launched here on www.tayosolagbade.com

When the sales page goes up, I will announce it on this blog, and also via a newsletter broadcast to my email subscribers.

UPDATE: The service is LIVE. Click here to visit the sale page.

To Succeed More, Develop Smarter Farming Methods – Then Teach Others (for FREE or a Fee)

My 7 year stay in Guinness Nigeria opened my eyes to best practice strategies I now use to help farm businesses boost their performance. If you wonder what beer production has got to do with farm production, keep reading, and it’ll soon be obvious.

I joined Guinness Nigeria as a Graduate Management Trainee in Brewing, following the ban on wheat importation, in late 1994.

And I was subsequently privileged to partake in an internally driven initiative to conduct on-site trials for viable alternative brewing ingredients.

They wanted to maintain beer quality at international standard and at the same time lower production costs. The problem was that with the ban, they had to achieve that goal using locally available cereals, which were of a lower quality.

They could have waited for some large research body somewhere to come up with an idea for using locally available cereals.

But the company’s decision makers knew they would be better off taking their destiny into their own hands.

And we eventually did get it right.

So much so that when in 2000, I and a senior colleague were sent as delegates to the International Brewing Course organized by the Institute & Guild of Brewing (IGB) in the UK, we were referred to by Tim O’Rourke (the organizer), as “experts in Sorghum brewing” from Guinness Nigeria!

Why? Well, at that time, we (Guinness Nigeria) were the only ones in the world successful in brewing “international quality” beer using Maize and Sorghum exclusively.

You must understand this: Other brewing companies used those same ingredients – but only as a complement (i.e. adjuncts) i.e. in small quantities.

The main ingredient recognised for beer production worldwide was Malted Barley. It was regarded as the best ingredient to get the best results.

Few people imagined that respectable quality beer could be produced without it – at least not by 100% exclusion of it in favour of poorly regarded ingredients like Maize and Sorghum.

Guinness’ success in doing just that led to a major shift in perspective – earning that style of brewing a mention in the formal brewing documentation.

Proof of that fact was made apparent when Tim asked I and my colleague to read through a draft manuscript being written, which had a section on Sorghum Brewing. He wanted us to check that it was consistent with what we did.

The above story shows it is possible to take ownership of how one’s business performance evolves, by choosing to innovate more actively in running it.

That’s what Guinness did.

Now, beer manufacturing is basically a batch production process. And that (i.e. batch production) is what farm businesses do too!.

In the case of farm business, a farmer who develops a new system for getting more eggs or meat from poultry, on a consistent basics, can – for instance – decide to offer a coaching program.

This could be made available to start-ups and those already established. Except it involves use of some proprietary formula, I do not see why this cannot happen.

And even if you do have to keep an aspect secret, you can still offer the service.

A Farm CEO in Nigeria’s Ibadan that I’ve referred to several times in the past, told me how he discovered a way to use up to 40% inclusion of cassava flakes – locally called “gari” – in rations he feeds to his catfish.

According to him, this has led to significant sustained cost savings with no noticeable drops in farm output!

But like I’ve told him, he’s only doing half of what I believe is possible…

The other half is sharing your discovery, having tested and found it to be enduring, with others – be it free or for a fee.

I happen to know other farmers who are searching for solutions like his. Some who reached out to me, I referred to him. But there are certainly many more who would gladly contact him IF they knew he had such solutions to offer

Two years ago, I mentioned speaking – on phone – with a Nigerian professor, who is a World Bank consultant…

He revealed that he earned additional income by “selling” feed based on a ration formula he derived using linear programming.

And he jokingly noted that many buyers of his feed had asked that he give them the formula, and he had naturally declined.

That proves what I’m proposing in this article is possible.

You just need to go about it creatively!

I recommend that every farm CEO who wishes to make MORE money (outside the direct sale of farm produce) adopt the ideas I advocate here.

In other words, work hard to develop improved cost-saving ways of running your farm production processes.

Aim to lower you cost of producing each batch of farm output for instance.

Then take some of your useful discoveries you make and MONETIZE them.

The ones you choose to share for FREE will inadvertently attract positive attention from your target audience.

That would give you an indirect way to promote your ideas, and get name recognition/credibility.

A timeless and cost-effective platform, to implement this strategy would be a website – with an email newsletter system built into it.

What I refer to above, is what I do with my work. Some aspects of my methods/discoveries I offer for free.

Others I make available ONLY for a fee:

A good example is the Poultry Layer Farm Business Plan I dispatched to a client in Nigeria last week. I’ve now re-packaged it in a generic form, for sale to interested buyers, with an option of including the multi worksheet Excel workbook with projection tables, and formulas. Click here to contact me, if you’d like to get a copy.

And that’s just an example of many that I have done – and still intend to do.

I routinely announce my new discoveries/offers via my blog – which republished via RSS syndication to my website, face book twitter feed to visitors, fans and followers.

Plus, I send broadcasts periodically, via my email newsletter –and subscribers.
