Today I purchased an excellent 2 part audio DVD product (titled “Know Your Rights in Dealing With the Police/In Court”) at a microbusiness sales shop. But each disk cost me N100 (One Hundred Naira) – and to me, that price was criminally LOW! I told the sales lady so, noting that my audio DVD products sell for a minimum of N1,000 (most from N2,500), and I do NOT even pay for a rented outlet!!
Curious, I asked the lady, if the sales recorded covered the rental overheads and other expense they were incurring.
Not surprisingly, she told me her boss, the brilliant lawyer who had produced that 2 part audio series – and many other products lined up in boxes in the shop – had dispensed a lot of his personal funds trying to get buyers.
According to her, people keep telling them to bring down their price – yet, even at N100 for both the DVDs and the book versions, sales are only trickling in!
Figures.
Buyers in these parts are like that. Listening to them in deciding your pricing is equivalent to commiting business marketing suicide. A long time ago, I learned to IGNORE prospective buyers who are too fixated on my PRICE to the exclusion of other considerations.
Before leaving, I told the lady to tell her boss to give me a call.
If he calls I intend to give him a FREE consultation on what he is doing wrong, and why he needs to completely CHANGE the selling arrangement he currently has in place, if he wants to command SALES befitting the quality of product he offers.
I have listened to the first part of the DVD, and it’s obvious that it was professionally produced in a studio. What’s more, each DVD has a label, and a sleeve – all branded.
As you can imagine that must have cost quite a bit, to do.
Consider also that he has over 10 other products similarly produced all stacked in boxes in the retail shop.
The problem is – as I told the young lady – only people who PHYSICALLY come across the shop, and who can spare the time to stop over are most likely to make purchases.
Yet, the truth remains that MANY people would most likely be positively disposed to purchasing a product that offers RELIABLE information of YOUR RIGHTS in dealing with the police, and in court.
It’s a subject, especially in Nigeria, that is worth learning a bit about, given the erratic nature of Nigeria’s society.
I should add here that she mentioned they have a website, but their offline efforts are not in anyway complemented by what is online. As a result, little synergy is being achieved.
If my experiences are anything to go buy (and I KNOW from what I’ve done for other clients and myself that they are), waiting for people to discover you in a corner shop, where you have books and DVDs in boxes for sale, is unlikely to yield tangible, talk less sustainable results over time.
What you are selling is INFORMATION in various formats that people can buy. It is imperative, if you wish to be profitable, that you drastically cut down the costs you incur in FINDING or attracting potential buyers.
Indeed, I always recommend for people in this field, that they employ a system that makes people who need their products find and come to them. This is because that ensure the most serious of them come to have sales discussions with you.
This lawyer, I learnt, in a bid to make more sales at a point has even paid “marketers” to go out to the streets hawking the products.
Wrong move.
That will hurt you much more than it can help you – if at all!
Take it from me. I have seen so many people end up with zero results to show from using this strategy.
The minute you adopt that approach, you make yourself and what you offer look ORDINARY – and that will only attract the worst kinds of potential buyers: those looking for bargains at ANY cost. Those who do NOT appreciate quality or value.
If you want to make good profits in business, it is important to make up your mind to attract ONLY people who will be willing to pay what you ask (or something close) to get the QUALITY solution you offer.
That’s why you need to adopt a system that is repeatable, and reproducible, which will work for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and all round the year – even when you are sleeping – to make serious minded potential buyers discover and contact you!
This kind of system can however NOT be developed overnight.
You will need to invest quality time and effort, to get it up and running.
But the minute it’s in place and working well (and you keep WORKING it) you will be able to reap the SALES rewards as promised, with MINIMAL cost overheads.
Indeed, in the case of the lawyer, like I told his sales person, he would be abe to SHUT that rented shop permanently, and still be able to make MUCH more money selling ALL his products than he ever did BEFORE he adopted the system I propose here.
Simply put, this system is a timeless marketing weapon that will generate sales leads for you, making those who need your information products find and CONTACT by themselves, to get it.
The best part is most times they will come VERY prepared to part with the money you tell them to pay !
