To Succeed, Your Child Needs to Develop Purpose in Life

By “purpose”, I mean the ultimate, over riding objective that you set for yourself to achieve over your entire lifetime.

It has been said that a well-defined purpose is actually one that will keep a person busy trying to achieve it till he/she dies. However, that person would derive the greatest satisfaction and fulfillment not just from actualizing that objective, BUT also in the process of working towards that achievement.

As I said in my FREE auto responder e-course titled “Ten Ways You Can Use Self-Development To Create The Future You Want” that kind of “purpose” has been described by some as a “Magnificent Obsession”.

Now, if we think of highly successful people in our respective societies, we can reasonably deduce what purpose in life each of them has (or had).

In Nigeria, for instance, the late fiery Lawyer Gani Fawehinmi, seemed to be obsessed with fighting for the emancipation of the rights of the common people.

That is the masses, the downtrodden, the poverty stricken and the disadvantaged.

That his cause/purpose was his “obsession” could not be doubted when one saw the passion with which he spoke about it, every single time he had the opportunity.

It goes without saying that THAT was why he lasted so long in pursuit of that purpose. It also explains why he had such a huge following amongst Nigerians.

Same applies to Fela Anikulapo Kuti – who chose to educate us through his songs about the folly of our ways and those of our governments/leaders, as well as the need for us to avoid feeling inferior to others.

Fela died living the values he so fervently advocated.

Again, that was why he was so phenomenally successful – and acknowledged worldwide – in death – even by those he “preached” against!!

In effect, by “purpose” I refer to the special talent, skill, insight or ingenuity that a person (e.g. your child) might have to offer this world.

The exclusive niche s/he might end up – with proper guidance – carving for himself in the nation, on the continent – even across the globe.

That rare, unique quality which would make his/her name ring a familiar bell in the ears of people…

The way Mohammed Ali’s name today still rings very loud, familiar and pleasant bells in all our ears.

Ali is one man who, despite physical limitations imposed on him by ageing, as well as a nervous disorder, still continues to demonstrate the extraordinary courage and tenacity that has made many refer to him as the greatest Boxing Heavyweight Champion who ever lived.

He has indeed lived the dream he once had!

I challenge you TODAY to give your child also the opportunity to dare to dream BIG, and AIM HIGH, like those great people we all know…so s/he can over time, enjoy the excitement of striving to accomplish that dream.

As in the Olympics, the joy is not necessarily just in winning, but also in having participated. It is in having given it your best shot. And never having to look back with regret that you could have done better.

Let’s give our children that opportunity – even if we never got it when we were their age.

If you really love your kids, you will do this for them. And they will thank your for it…..all their lives.

To Succeed, Make Your Excel-VB Software Complement Others

“Tayo, what is your honest opinion about commercial off-the-shelf accounting software, compared with the custom applications you build?”

I am sometimes asked the foregoing question in various forms, by prospective clients trying to make up their minds about what option to choose (i.e off-the-shelf apps versus my custom Excel-VB application development service).

Here’s a typical example of the answer I normally give them…

I have helped clients (in different professions/industries) develop 100% custom Excel-VB Driven Software to overcome peculiar limitations of traditional software (or manual/paper-based) systems that they use for their financial and operational data handling/analysis and report generation .

Accountants/Finance Managers of large organisations in particular have so far made made the most demands for my services. Excel-VB afford you the advantage of being able to extend the capabilities of your existing software – or manual systems – using my 100% customisable Excel-based software that empower you to get more work done with LESS effort via efficient time/cost-saving automation.

In other words, my custom Excel Software COMPLEMENT rather than REPLACE your existing software and/or systems.

You therefore LOSE NOTHING since your prior investment in the latter is protected.

All that I have already said above is effectively what I tell prospects/clients in general.

However, for those in my part of the world (i.e Africa), I emphasise that I DO NOT build Accounting software – except a clients specifically requests it.

Instead my applications are custom Entreprise Information Systems(EIS) which help their owners manage operations (e.g. materials usages) &/or accounting data for more reliable business decision making:

1. The commerical accounting software work well for anyone whose needs are fully catered for by the various useful features and functions they offer.

I have seen many organisations – including schools – that have found this to be so. They confidently told me they did not have any unmet needs from using the programs they chose.

2. However, the accounting applications are built to prepare accounts in line with standard reporting formats used mainly in developed societies.

As a result, they often cannot accomodate the business/accounts data handling/report generation needs/peculiarities extant here. This is due to our largely unregulated environment in this regard. That’s why many who use the programs still find themselves periodiocally/repeatedly turning to programs like MS Excel to cater for areas not covered by their commercial software.

It is the above type of situation that creates a need for the solutions I offer.

In other words, if you have a software system in place and STILL find need to do some of your important work OUTSIDE of it, then a custom solutions development service like mine is likely to benefit you greatly.

3. For prospects who indicate interest, I go further to refer them to a very insightful/experience-based opinion expressed by a financial consultant which shows that MS Excel-based solutions can indeed help OVERCOME limitations that accounting software may have.

Incidentally, this is why you will hardly find any off-the-shelf  accounting software which do not offer the user an option to export data stored in them into MS Excel!

Final Words

Like I always tell my clients and prospects, if there is an alternative that works satisfactorily and is cost-effective, it would make NO sense to hire me.

It is when you have searched for one and found NONE, that my custom Excel-VB solutions development becomes relevant – and potentially VALUE adding. At this point, it WOULD be justifiable to invest in it.

I have read and still reading the business plan, while trying to understand the cash-flow, forecasts and balance sheet projections better as well. So grateful for th(is) beautiful and comprehensive proposal, which by God’s grace will definitely never be in vain.

I stumbled on this article of a major firm in Uganda, taking advantage of the lack of supply of poultry demands in the country, to establish the largest poultry settlement in the whole of east africa, meaning that this livestock business and agricultural practice in general, will continue to strive and flourish until the world ends..lol, the link is: <link removed>

Did You Notice I Did NOT Have to Wait to Get My Balance Paid?

I have said this in the past – about serving AUTHENTIC clients. Just devote yourself to delivering the VALUE you promise them, and they will return the favour.

BUT…it’s Not So Easy to Find “Authentic” Clients!

Indeed, it takes LOTS of practice – even trial and error – using your gut level instincts as guide.

There are however rules you can follow to increase your chances of finding such profitable clients.

Now, I must note here that THIS client, being a childhood friend, actually got certain concessions that others – even when I believe them to be authentic – rarely get.

For instance, I agreed to let him pay in 3 instalments – though the 1st 2 were the heftiest.

I did this because I knew him well enough to be sure he would honour our payment agreement.

The best I would offer most other clients, no matter how convinced I am that they are authentic, would be 2 instalments. And the first would be 80% of the total.

Details of why I operate as described above have been treated in past articles. And I’ll still share more insights in future write-ups. Hint: It’s manly due to chronic lack of integrity of many today.

The Above Emails from my Client Awoke Me to a Realization I’d Been Blind to For YEARS: About “How Your Public Speaking Competence Can Affect Your Ability to Sell Your Business Plan”

You see, from reading both emails he sent me, it was obvious he wanted to make sure he fully understood the plan’s contents ahead of the meetings.

And that’s smart thinking, because…

No Matter How Good Your Written Plan is, Using it to Raise Funds May Still Require YOU to Do a Formal Presentation to Prospective Investors

It won’t matter if the presentation is to a prospective investor who is your best friend, your former boss, or even your father.

Most people – even close relatives – won’t just dip their hands into their pockets and hand over the money you ask for. I doubt you would either!

We all want to be assured that we will not be throwing our money away by investing in another person’s business venture or idea.

But delivering a smart and convincing business plan verbal presentation – even to a familiar persons – can be a disconcerting experience.

And when you’re doing it before total strangers, it can get even more disorienting.

Your mind will constantly warn you s/he or they can say NO. And that possibility can make you nervous – to the extent that you botch your presentation.

But that will often ONLY happen IF you fail to prepare and practice ahead of that event!

The reality is that those who have to decide to “award” you funds will be expecting you to not only have a good written plan, but to also SPEAK about it convincingly.

Among other things, they will expect you to be articulate, and confident in responding to their questions or objections. If you’re stammering all over the place and fidgety, nervous or shifty eyed, they could quickly lose confidence…and interest.

So, How Can You Equip Yourself to Present Your Business Ideas Smartly Enough to Win Prospective Investor(s) Over?

What I recommend is quite simple:

1. First, know your subject inside out.

Do this by conducting a proper, real life market survey, and put together your business plan based on that.

2. Next, practice thinking and speaking about its contents relentlessly until it becomes second nature.

By this I mean, until it becomes something you can do without thinking, even when woken up from deep sleep.

A good way to achieve that end will be to enlist the help of your spouse and/or other competent persons to listen to you do the formal business plan presentation. Take on ANY questions they throw at you.

3. Repeat the exercise as often as necessary, until you feel at EASE doing it.

Once you can get yourself to do the above state of mind/competence, you’re likely to win more than passing attention from prospective investors genuinely interested in your idea.

It would just be a matter of time before you find one or more willing to give you what you want!

To Achieve The Above, Your Start-Up Idea Will Often Need to be A PASSION of Yours

Starting a poultry farm business, for instance, can be as risky as it is profitable.

Prospective investors would NOT be unaware of that fact. They would therefore want to be sure their money will be in capable hands most likely to deliver the promised returns on investment!

This is why it would be unwise to attempt starting a venture on other people’s money, IF it is not based on what I call a Magnificent Obsession (click here to read one of several articles in which I explain what having it means – for me)!

In certain ways, presenting a business plan to investors is similar to defending one’s university research paper, to qualify for graduation

By implication, you may find it useful to prepare your business plan, and presentation with a similar mindset.

For instance, you’d conduct a survey (field or literature review), then analyze – and interpret your data/findings. Following that, you would draw conclusions and make recommendations – or propose an action plan.

All of that would be written in your neatly bound document.

The way it happens varies across institutions. But you would typically have to do a formal presentation of your paper, to an academic panel who would have read it BEFORE you come before them to speak.

They would subsequently award a “pass” or “fail” rating – based on their impressions of your performance (taking into consideration the quality of your written paper).

It’s just like a prospective investor (or venture capital team) saying YES or NO to your request for funding – AFTER listening to your presentation!

The truth is not everyone finds it easy to communicate their ideas intelligently and convincingly, when in front of people they know will decide their fate!

I know people who really knew their stuff, and did all the hard work putting it together, only to stumble during their presentations.

In the process, they failed to win the support they needed.

Final Words: The Above is Why I Believe Everyone Needs Public Speaking Coaching!

At some point in life, we will each have to do a formal presentation of some kind. Why wait till you need to do it, to learn?

You’re much better off preparing yourself well ahead of time.

That way, having to think on your feet (which is a key requirement for success speaking) will be something you’re already comfortable doing. You would just need study the subject to speak on.

It is my considered opinion, that doing this will make much fewer people rate “public speaking” as their biggest fear (even ahead of exposure to life threatening danger), in research surveys!

I’ll be recommending the above line of action to my client in an email.

If he applies this idea diligently, I know his chances of impressing the prospective investors he plans to meet with, will greatly improve.

No. 156: To Succeed, Always Count Your Blessings During Adversity (Hint: Would You Work At Your Best If Power Supply Was Erratic?)

I am not sure how many of you on my mailing list
know what it feels like to endure YEARS of VERY erratic power supply
on a daily basis from your country’s power company.

That’s what Nigerians in Nigeria endure daily.

During my visits to Ghana (in 2005) and Cameroon (in 1999 and 2001) most people did not believe that in Nigeria, a person may go WEEKS without power – even as his neighbor continues
having it!

Why am I writing
about this?

Well, it’s because I want you all to understand
the conditions under which all the news, articles, reports and resources
you find on my website were created daily – especially from back in 2005, when I launched my former primary domain: spontaneousdevelopment.com

Today, due to the fact that I’ve relocated to Benin Republic (which also enjoys healthy uninterrupted power!), I do not have to endure the same hardship of working under the noise and discomfort of an electricity generator.

That is, except when I visit Nigeria for extended periods, as has been the case over the past 2 weeks!

In contrast to the way I work in Benin Republic’s Cotonou, many times here in Lagos, I have to work using generator power because the lights are often OFF longer than they are ON.

As
you can imagine, since I earn my living by building software, websites
and writing articles – all of which require a PC/access to the net and
of course electricity, I have to find a way to progress work given me
by paying clients if I want to make profits.

To make matters worse, since last week, the lights that went out have NOT come back on again. As a result we have to run the generator much more often.

So you find many people out here have to own
generators and buy fuel into kegs for use in these generators EVERY
single day.

But that would not be so bad if the fuel was always available
– but it sometimes tends not to be!

Every now and then Nigerians find that fuel shortages
cause long queues to build up at the fuel stations! A long vicious cycle
that affects this nation’s productivity and wealth generation severely.

I still recall coming home some months ago, earlier in this year. I had to buy fuel into 4 small plastic coke bottles at the border, to take home with me!

This was because of a prolonged fuel scarcity that made it impossible for my wife and kids to get fuel to buy. Yet I needed to do some work that night on arriving the house. So buying the fuel at N140 per litre (instead of N97 per litre) became necessary.

For those of you who live in countries
where your power supply is regular, it is likely you have no large markets
for generators and “kegged” fuels.

I want you to know how BLESSED you
are, that your country works that way, and you REALLY NEED to be grateful for it
!

The money that
should be left over in a barber’s pockets out here at the end of each
day very often gets spent on generator fuel and maintenance DAILY whether
s/he likes it or not!

At your end, the cyber cafe owner never has to
quickly run down stairs to switch on his generator because power supply
has suddenly gone off, and users browsing in his cafe may lose their
work online!

Now, this epileptic (or completely unavailable) power supply problem has always been a
feature of our lives here in Nigeria.

In the past two weeks, I estimate that I have not had light
for more than four hours in ONE single day – and even that was NOT for
a continuous stretch.

It is always a case of ON, then OFF, then ON again.
If you don’t believe me, come on a trip to Nigeria and stay in a hotel
for a few hours.

I assure you that’s all you’ll need – just a few hours),
and like a Ghanaian friend who was here on official work some years ago,
you’ll quickly learn that what I say is true from hearing the hotel’s
standby generator go ON and OFF, then ON and OFF …again and again!

On a lighter note, in your country the first
word that a baby learns to say may be “daddy” or “mummy”!

But in Nigeria, the problem is so severe that one of the first “words” a baby may learn to say is “NEPA!” – which
is what our power generation company(National Electric Power Authority)
is known by – though they now officially go by “PHCN” – whatever
difference that has made.

Having said all the above, despite all these challenges and limitations
in MY socioeconomic environment, many Nigerians keep forging ahead in
their work.

Like most other Nigerians in Nigeria, who were engaged in formal business, I had no alternatives while here (before I moved to Benin).

So I gritted my teeth (figuratively speaking) and focused on finding ways to get what I had to do DONE faster and cost-effectively by improving DAILY, for well over a decade.

The fact that I actually grew my client base and even began attracting attention from foreign based prospects from as far as Asia, Europe and America, indicates that I made progress in spite of this major limitation.

How
did I achieve all that despite these debilitating challenges posed
by the unpredictability of my social environment?

The answer is that I knew (and know) “How to habitually deliver peak performances by getting
into and STAYING in “flow” or the “Zone”.
If you want to know what that means, and how you can learn to
do the same thing, Google that article title and read it.

Final Words

I’ll end by noting that even though I made progress using the above, while in Nigeria, I knew I could make even better progress if I change my environment.

Eventually, I followed the creator’s guidance to relocate to Cotonou, on 1st April 2011, from where I have since taken my work to a whole new level – as can be seen on
my website and mini-sites on Excel-VB Software Development and Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas/Solutions.

My message is therefore that while you’re still unable to move to your preferred environment, resolve to make the most of what you have, where you are, like I did. The Creator who observes you will eventually lead you to discover and seize the opportunity that you need, like he did for me!

PS: In a Bid to Save Money, My Kids Have Learnt to Service the Generator Themselves

One more thing.

This power supply problem, I must say, has added some indirect benefits to my family. And I feel a need to highlight it, just to remind the reader that adversity often has some equivalent benefit that once can reap – if YOU pay attention.

When you’ve experienced severe lack of money like I did in the past, you come to see money as it should be seen: a guest that should be treated properly, so it stays LONG with you.

And that means watching your expenses and being frugal at all times. This made me detest the need to pay to have our little generators serviced by the mostly unschooled mechanics we called in every 2 to 3 weeks.

Each time I watched them at work, it struck me that they were teenagers like my first son. That told me he could also learn to do what they did.

So, whenever I came home from Cotonou, I began challenging him and his siblings to watch the generator mechanics at work to learn how to do what they did.

I told them to pay close attention so they could do it themselves.

And I promised to give them at least half of the money that would be saved if we no longer had to call the mechanics in: THAT of course got their attention!

As of today, 25th August 2014, they have not called in those guys for routine servicing of the generator for over a month.

Instead, each time it shows signs of faltering, my kids – the 15 and 13 year old boys specifically – (as I shared in a past article) take the generator apart, clean up the various parts, then re couple and start it: ALL by themselves!

And it’s working well.The way I see it, that’s one useful benefit my kids have derived from this nuisance of poor power supply.

At least they now have a set of real world relevant skills to add to their oven-less cake backing etc – that can open doors for them in larger society in future.

To Succeed, Let Your Reputation Precede and Speak for You

Today, I delivered a one hour talk to members of the media unit of (name removed for privacy) Foundation, in Ota, Ogun State Nigeria. It was a small group. But no speaking event is EVER small. As such, I prepared for it like I was going to speak to members of a CEOs club.

It pays to always show up as represented…and I share a true story that confirms this, in the rest of this piece…

Here’s something that’s very useful to keep in mind.

When potential clients are considering your services they often have fears that influence their decision making.

Among other things, they want to make sure they get what they pay for. And they also want to see how they can pay a reasonable fee (read: as little as possible) to get everything they want.

To get chosen by profitable clients, you have to make yourself stand out from the crowd, by having a unique offering that’s hard to ignore.

Let me explain by sharing details of a discussion I had with a “friend” who referred me to a new client. He said the client had received enquiries from potential partner organizations about teaming up.

However, the latter wanted to learn more about the client’s organization, so they could be sure they were on the right track. Not surprisingly, they asked for a website – among other things.

The client told my “friend”, who happened to be a member of the board. The latter went out to speak with several website developers. But, according to him, each one he spoke with did not say anything like what he knew I always told my clients I would do for them.

For instance, I explain that what I deliver as a website will, if used as I advice it should, help the client make more profits by LOWERING cost of sales leads generation, while boosting marketing reach and impact.

That’s a 2-in-1 offer right there.

Either way, the client knows such a website is likely to leave him/her better off at any point in time. And s/he will not be willing to pass it up.

However, I don’t just say it with words. I actually offer real life examples, case studies and true personal stories, to back up my claims. This was what my friend knew, that made him struggle to accept what the website developers he spoke with told him.

He told me the enquiries from the prospective partners indicated only a website with the features I described would be best to present to them. So he told the client it would be best to contact me, and find out what it would take to have me build such a website for them.

We had a meeting, and the client upon speaking with me, decided he wanted me to handle development of what I told him would be a Web Marketing System.

Everything I have said above relates to the NGO I spoke in this afternoon. And the “friend” I mentioned is actually a relative (my uncle to be specific).

At the end of the talk, I began preparing the following files to burn on to the DVD I promised to leave for them to study:

1. The Power Point presentation file (which I never used) for my talk titled “Now That Your Website Is Up,. What Do You Do Next? Practical Ideas for Making Profitable Use of a Response Generating Website”.

2. Three MP3 audio files for my 3 part series titled “Why You Need a Web Marketing System(WMS)”

3. A PDF version of my article (on which the talk is based) titled “Now That Your Website Is Up,. What Do You Do Next?”

While I was burning the files on to the DVD using my laptop, the client walked up and said “What will you need to get started on building the website”…and I told him…

You will agree with me, that he would NOT have asked that question if I had failed to deliver a talk that convinced him going ahead would be okay.

And that’s what it means to show up as represented!

First, he was told about me by someone else. Then during a first meeting, I impressed him enough to make him ask how much it would cost to have a WMS developed and implemented for his organization.

What’s more, he was so enthused about the ideas I shared that he requested that I deliver a PAID talk to members of his team, so they could adopt the required mind set I told him was needed to make effective use of the WMS.

Then after I delivered that talk, he was satisfied enough with what he’d heard, that he went on to ask what I would need to start work on the website!

See how it began as a probable sale, and now it’s headed towards a full sale. At each stage I simply had to show up as represented.

If you want to be able to boost your chances of winning prospects over (even if you’re a NGO, this applies!), use this approach. It never fails.

Final Words: If you want to really do it right, you WILL need to develop and implement a WMS with which you will subtly “sell” yourself.

Most of what I said to my client at our first meeting, and the audience during my talk, was based on successes I achieved with my WMS.

I simply told one relevant story after another to reinforce the points I had to make at every stage. And it worked. It will always work. You just need to know how to use it.

To Succeed, Extract Useful Lessons from Your Travel Experiences

You arrive in a new country at night, and check into a hotel. Then at 10a.m you meet your business associate, for a meal. You talk business, and then fly out. Get this: You have NOT really “been to” that country!

If your schedule makes doing the above necessary, I do not quarrel with that.

However, when someone says I’ve “been to” X number of countries, I always wonder if the above example describes the visits s/he’s made.

If it does, I would NOT want him/her to give ME travel tips to any of those places!

A Real Visit Will Go Beyond Interacting With An Isolated Group of Associates Based On a Tight Schedule

For instance, you want to make out quality time to see the sights and learn a little history about them.

You also would want to sample the food and drinks, try out their cultural outfits, and follow local news. Or even listen to folk tales while watching locals at work and/or play etc.

You would do the foregoing over a few hours, to a day or a week – depending on how long you’re there.

Doing the above will make you depart with a more accurate impression of that society than if you’d just breezed through!

I Call It Getting “Immersed” In Your Travel Experiences

Take it from me: Apart from yourself, exposing your child to the above kind of travel, can greatly boost his/her real world relevant intelligence, and know-how, in a way that directly leads to exceptional success in adulthood.

I say this based on my years of personal achievement, and from studying the lives of similar others.

For instance, I’m writing this article in a Cotonou Cyber Café a bit far away from Lagos, in my home country Nigeria.

By 1st April 2014, less than 10 days from now, I’ll have been here for a year, since relocating last year .

What I’ve learnt in that time, enabled me develop new strategies that’s taken my work to the next level.

If I had not travelled down here, those eye opening insights would never have come to me!

I Was Privileged to Benefit From Exposure to Travel Based Education Early In Life

And that’s even when the “travelling” was within the city I lived as a child!

In other words, I use the word “travel” in its normal, as well as a simplistic sense.

Basically, I’m saying MOVE yourself to explore the unfamiliar or unknown places, and people, around you!

At the age of 10, I began leaving home and “travelling” about 2 hours from Olodi Apapa area, to Ojo town as a first year student in Government College Ojo (where Lagos State University is today).

At that age, many of my peers walked short distances from home to their school, or their parents dropped them off at their school gates.

In my case, I got to do it all on my own EVERY weekday.

And those experiences shaped me into the fiercely independent person I am today.

The only regret I have about those early days is that I got into a bit of trouble by joining bad company. But looking back, even that “bad” experience further shaped me for later success!

For Over 3 Decades, I’ve Further Explored Benefits from Travel Opportunities of All Kinds…

This interest in travel was a major factor that influenced my decision to engage in competitive sports from the age of 12.

I’d been told it would involve travel at zero cost to me. I went on to play competitive handball, for school, state and university for about 10 years.

Plenty of interesting travelling happened in that time.

My Studies Also Afforded Me Varied Travel Experiences As Well…

I spent 5 years in a secondary school in Kwara State, in North West Nigeria. Then I did one year of Higher School Certificate (HSC) studies in Kaduna (travelling overnight by train from Lagos, between 1986 and 1987).

Then I moved to Oyo state in the South West for 5 years in the University of Ibadan. After that, I spent one year in Niger state’s remote Vatsa village in Nigeria’s middle belt area, observing my compulsory National Youth Service (NYSC).

It did not end there.

After NYSC I got a job with Guinness that eventually saw me being deployed to serve 7 years in their Ikpoba Hill based brewery in Edo State’s Benin City.

During 7 Years of Paid Employment In Guinness Benin, More Travelling Happened…

I made short visits of a day to 3 weeks to places like Port Harcourt, Owerri, Lokoja, Cameroon and Benin Republic.

Those trips were self sponsored.

On certain occasions, during my journeys, I slept overnight at motor parks in places like Lokoja, Owerri, within Nigeria.

One night, in Kumba, a border town on the outskirts of Cameroon, I slept – along with 11 other passengers – in a mini bus from 11p.m till 5a.m.

This happened in July 1999.

The driver told us it was necessary, to avoid bandits who ambushed night travellers on the road. We were headed, at the time, to Douala, from Ekok, a town sharing a border with Nigeria’s Ikom in Calabar.

I spent 6 weeks travelling across England, Scotland, and Wales, and after that, another week in Cameroon. In these latter cases, the trips were company sponsored.

In All the Cases Mentioned Above, I Actively IMMERSED Myself, to Maximize the Experiences I Had

By this I mean that I went out of my way to explore the environment, speak with the people, taste the foods, ask how to say things in the local languages, learn how to cook local meals, and of course make friends.

I did not simply sit back and look out from the window of the car or bus or train.

Instead I resolved, each time, to gain a clear idea of what the place and the people were like.

This habit proved invaluable to me when I ran into people who had been there before – or who were from there.

Within a few seconds of conversation, I often got complimented on my demonstrated familiarity.

In other words,  I learned to appreciate the diversity of people and their cultures, and to welcome it. Nothing breeds tolerance and understanding than being “immersed” in travel experiences like that.

The people you do that to also feel good about meeting you.

And that could make them welcome someone they learn is from your country even more warmly!!

Final Words: The Benefits You’ll Get Are Multi-Dimensional – Here’s One Example…

In 2001, I was discussing with delegates from other countries on the final day of a one week course on Workplace Coaching Conversations in Douala’s Hotel Akwa Palace.

A colleague from Guinness Nigeria had asked what places could be visited over the weekend and I’d offered some ideas based on my 3 week stay in 1999.

A Guinness Cameroon manager expressed surprise that I’d visited Mendong and Oballa, two places he – who lived in Cameroon – had never been to, saying “Tayo, you have really visited Cameroon!

That day, he insisted on having me over as a guest in his home for the weekend with his family.

The course facilitator also suggested since I could speak French and had been there before,  I’d be in the best position to join the Camerooninans in implementing their run of the course!

And that’s just one of many ways travel based exposure can open doors of opportunity for you: you become more INTERESTING to others…an essential quality for success achievement!

No. 133: To Succeed, Find Correctly Motivated Buyers

Why do people who buy YOUR services do so? Do you know? In this article, I explain why knowing the answer to that question, is the key to your long term selling success, as a service provider.

The insights I share can make you more effective in selling your services for the long term, IF you apply them.

Societies Differ In the Value They Place on Specific Types of Solutions

This applies to both products and services, but more to the latter in my experience.

A person can easily make a living as a chiropractor in the USA. But s/he could literally starve trying to sell the same service in my home country, Nigeria.

Unless s/he’s smart enough to find enough of the few people who value such a service e.g. expatriates from societies where such a service is valued. Most Nigerians, even wealthy ones, would NOT pay worthwhile fees (if at all they show any interest) for such a service.

Possible exceptions would be instances when they see it as an opportunity to show off, or prove they belong to a prestigious social class.

Now that, could catch the money spending attention and interest of some who can afford it.

They would typically be people who buy to prove a point, and not because they need the service. They are people who sometimes spend to avoid being outdone by others. Crazy? Maybe. But it’s true!

Which brings me to the issue of buyers’ motives…

Let Me Illustrate With a Personal True Story

One morning, a few years back, a real estate expert I’d interacted with over a series of months, initially by phone and later in person, called me up.

After we’d exchange pleasantries, he said:

“Look, I need you to come down so we can finalize and get started on building my website. I really need it now. When can we meet?”

For me, I had been a bit surprised. He’d always spoken as if he considered having a website a waste of time. So when we met, I asked him why he suddenly decided he was ready to use a website.

His reply confirmed his ego was still in the driving seat of his decision making. For me, that was NOT good!

He said “Come, let me show you this website” motioning for me to come to his side of the table, and look at his laptop screen display.

There I saw a beautifully designed real estate website with pretty pictures of properties for sale. It had all the bells and whistles installed. You know the type :-)

I said “Is this the kind of website you want?”

“No. I want something better!” he replied, looking at me as if to say “How can you even ask me that?”

Then he added “Do you know the guy who owns this site, started out only few years ago. Last time we met, he was not doing anything special. But if he can own this kind of website, then I must have mine, or people will start thinking he’s bigger than I am!”

As he said those words, I knew it was potentially one of those nightmare projects that would never go well. So, I offloaded him gently, by pushing my fees higher than normal, to a point I knew he’d balk at :-)

Over time, I’ve found that in my part of the world, farm business owners tend to be the most authentic of clients one can find. Most times their motives are based on the need to get real results – otherwise their investments go down the drain. And so, most times they take you seriously when they hire you.

A Web Marketing System (WMS) Will Increase Your Chances of Getting Found By Buyers with the Right Motives

It has been my experience that buyers with the right motives, tend to be fewer in number. For that reason you need to use more rigorous marketing strategies to find and attract them. This is why depending mainly on face to face, networking and “connections” to promote your service is not wise.

And that’s why I recommend using a combination of strategies.

At the core of your marketing arsenal, should be the intelligent use of what I call a Web Marketing System (WMS).

It does not give results overnight.

But done right, it will help GROW your name recognition and credibility as an expert at what you do.

I’m living proof of that fact …and I offer some recent examples to illustrate that fact:

This past weekend, I got a web contact form enquiry from a business owner from Barbados (a first…see below), for my Feed Formulation Products.

I also received a phone call from a UK based Nigerian, who told me he was just reading one of my articles, and wanted to know how to pay for my Ration Formulator™ software.

Then at 4.00a.m this morning, a chap who’d had a Facebook chat session with me, a year ago, about buying my Payslip Generator (or learning to build it himself), returned to post a request on my wall (see below):

Earlier in the week, I’d gotten a call from a Farm CEO based in Uyo, who confirmed he’d received the Feed Formulation learning package I’d sent him via DHL, following his payment.

Those are just a few examples. A number eventually result in actual sales. Some are good friends with me today, even though we’ve still never met.

There’s ONE main reason total strangers reach out to me, REPEATEDLY in the ways described above.

And that’s because I’ve used my WMS to put out credibility boosting information about the solutions I offer – in various formats (e.g. Ezine articles, Youtube videos, ebooks and free download resources of all kinds) – using a variety of channels (e.g. my website, on Facebook, Twitter, PInterest etc).

And this is not something I just did once, and sat back to enjoy benefits from.

No.

I’ve been doing it regularly for years. That’s the key: doing it over and over – but adding new content CREATIVELY.

That increases the mass of useful information linked to me, that’s relevant to what buyers with the right motives want. And so they get in touch.

Use Careful Observation, Combined With Critical Thinking, to Detect Buyers with the Right Motives

Why do companies hire Motivational Speakers to address their employees for one to a few hours? Why do meeting planners for trade associations invite experts-who-speak to deliver their trademark programs to their members?

Ideally, they want such speakers to help their members/employees perform better. Rarely would bias or favouritism be allowed to influence the process of choosing the RIGHT speaker for their event.

The reality in the real world I’ve had to offer speaking services as a Self-Development and Performance Improvement Specialist, has however tended to be a bit different.

You see, as a multipreneur, I offer a variety of solutions to different target audiences.

However, as stated above, I’ve found Farm Business Owners to be the most profitable group. So in line with the Pareto principle, I spend at least 80% of my marketing time/effort reaching out to them.

In whatever free time I have left, I try to connect with other groups. And I periodically make sales.

But between 2002 and 2005, my early start-up years, I’d not gained the above insights.

So I wasted (based on hindsight now) a lot of effort on marketing my Self-Development and Spontaneous Coaching™ learning events.

My objective was to get invited as a speaker and trainer in organisations.

What I discovered was that many (please note: NOT all) of the decision makers had different motives for engaging learning service providers.

Quite often, only people who were willing to play certain games (mostly unethical), or those who knew someone (who knew someone!) up “there”, got hired.

As a result, I found that I got repeatedly ignored.

Yet, I knew I could add value to many employees and their companies with my ideas. So I began putting them on the web via articles, special reports, a flagship Workplace Performance Improvement seminar offer, my Self-Development Bible etc.

Today, that strategy has paid off in some ways.

Take the example of my 10 item customisable Employee Workplace Morale Survey Quiz (approx 23.5KB).

I call it the “Employee Morale Gauge (available as an MS Excel workbook). I wrote an article based on it, titled “Are Your Employees Happy & Satisfied with Their Jobs? (A Ten Item Quiz That Can Help You Find Out)“.

In 2008, it was republished – with my permission – by India’s ICFAI University (with Sangeetha K. as author) in their 252 page journal titled “Employee Morale: Concepts and Cases” now on sale here(see item 14).

The article/10 item quiz has also been purchased by the Human Resource Development Manager of a US company, and at least one company in the UK currently offers it as a download for clients on their website.

Few Organisation in My Local Market Have Ever Shown Interest…Strangely (?)

Apart from speaking at the Centre for Management Development in 2002, and a few other gigs, I got little success as a speaker in my local market.

On the few occasions I got hired, I knew upfront before the decision came. I was basically able to sense that the decision makers wanted results.

They wasted no time on mind games of any sort! (See below)

But such opportunities were too few and far between.

So I gradually shifted towards serving farm owners more.

With the progress I’ve so far made, I’m now working on learning resources (e.g. my Practical Feed Formulation and Compounding Home Study Video Package ), and events.

Examples: My 4 to 6 hour Feed Formulation workshop, and keynote speeches on Best Practice) for Farm Business Owners groups and associations.

Final Words: Use a Similar Strategy to Succeed as an Expert-Who-Speaks

Form the habit of asking probing questions.

NB: I paraphrased Burt Dubin in that preceding sentence. He recommends getting decision makers to tell you what results they expect to see AFTER you are done (he teaches his students specific questions to use).

Then use careful observation (trust your gut instincts!), to intelligently choose who you invest time and effort in promoting your services to/respond to enquiries from…

…and HOW far you go to do so.

That way, you’re likely to pick the right clients to serve cost-effectively, and efficiently in terms of time and effort.

The best part is, you’ll be sure of not only getting well paid, but also getting great reviews, that you can use to promote yourself to others.

To Succeed, Make Working in Your (Farm) Business More Attractive to Employees

What impression will a new employee in your company get about available career advancement opportunities? Will s/he see that anyone who delivers good performance gets rewarded? Or will s/he discover no reliable rewards/recognition system exists?

Small Business (Including Farm) CEOs Must Pay Closer Attention to Employee Development…

My passionate desire to help career persons succeed in the workplace, derives from the 7 years of high level success I achieved in paid employment.

I want to help others find ways, get ideas, and learn about strategies they can use to make their way up the organisational ladder. Like I successfully, and repeatedly did, in a fast paced multinational corporation.

This is why I write my articles on Career Development.

It’s however important to avoid making the mistake of assuming that  what I offer is only relevant to corporate organisations.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

My articles in this category are actually relevant to every kind of business, no matter how small, or large.

And that includes farm businesses – my main target audience.

I have seen too many small businesses suffer major lack of growth, because they provide poor (or sometimes NO!) career development opportunities for employees.

In addition, the owners display poor managerial skills, with regard to employee development and supervision.

Quite often, the above problems arise because many such owners have never worked in a structured organisational workplace before. As a result, they have little knowledge of how to go about it.

You Need to Create a Workplace Environment That Makes Employees Want to Stay & Serve You Well

Small business  – as well as large organisational -decision makers need to understand this.

If you don’t not know how to empower people to give their best on the job, there will be direct negative implications for your company in terms of growth.

Your employees must be able to give their best when they come to work.  For them to do that, they have to feel  that doing so will not be a waste of time.

YOU must therefore show THEM, that their continued presence, and the efforts they put in, can lead to useful attractive benefits for them.

Very Often, Giving Money Will NOT Give Long Term Employee Satisfaction

That’s a fact that many research findings have proven. So keep that in mind.

This is why whatever benefit you offer, must be attractive not just to you (i.e. in your eyes), but also in the employees’ eyes.

They have to feel that it would be worth their while, to put in effort to do whatever it is they are supposed to do, as employees in the company. E.g: To earn a salary, and also to grow in knowledge/skills; to get promoted, to have opportunity to travel etc.

If you do not create such an environment, and you hire people to work with you…there will be problems.

Remember: You alone have the vision for your business. You alone have the passion. You have to make others buy into YOUR vision, and to develop/share YOUR passion for it with you.

If you don’t do that and you bring people in, what will happen is that they will continually think they’re giving more than they’re getting.

And they will, nine times out of ten, keep looking for ways, to either game the system: in other words, they will aim to get more for  what they’re doing, without telling you, because they feel they’re being cheated…

Or they will think of ways to just use your place as a stepping stone to go elsewhere.

They will never see themselves as long term partners in the growth of your organisation.

Now, for a farm business, that’s not a very healthy scenario. For any small business, that’s not good.

For any organisation of whatever size actually, that doesn’t work very well for growth in terms of long term success.

So you need to address that fundamental problem. And I offer ideas in my articles that can help you.

Think of this article you’re reading now as a re-introduction of my offering as a professional in the Workplace Performance Improvement field.

My career development articles are not just an extra addition to this blog, or to my work.

I believe every client with employees, that I work with, needs to develop his/her human resources or workforce members.

S/he will need to create career development opportunities to make employees feel that what they’re doing is actually worth doing well.

Only then can every other thing I do for you, and that you seek to achieve, work the way it should.

If you don’t do that, you’re really going to struggle to succeed.

So I’ll End This by CHALLENGING YOU, to Do Some Good Quality Thinking From Today…

Especially about what steps you need to take, to make working in your company a more attractive proposition for every single member of your team.

But I do believe you will also need to do a Google search, to get other useful ones on how to give your employees the best possible experience while working with you.

Ideas about how to make them stay and commit to giving you the best of themselves – for example.

Why didn’t their classmates succeed like them?

Don’t Know About You, But I Have Always Wondered Why That Happens…

They all presumably attended the same classes, and were taught by the same teachers. And it’s not like those who became geniuses got extra coaching.

Indeed, quite a number of geniuses actually dropped out before completing their formal schooling.

So one would have imagined they’d have ended up worse off.

Instead, history shows they often did much better than those who finished school!

Why does this happen?

The Answer: Individuals Differ In Their Ability to Creatively Apply What They Know, and Learn

Genes may play a small role here, but it will not be a defining or limiting one.

This is why in societies across the world, we often come across many examples of people who achieve great things despite having little or nothing, in comparison to others who had everything given to them.

E.g. Persons who rise from rags to riches.

Knowing that they do not have anyone to depend on, they learn to look inwards and dig deep.

Sometimes they are so poor they cannot afford to attend school!

So they focus on their goals, and actively explore ways to progress, no matter how bleak things look.

And they never accept that what they want is impossible to get. This is a basic instinct that drives them.

They do not know how to give up!

Based on the Above, I Believe “Attitude” Is What Makes People Who Attend the Same Training, Perform Differently Afterwards

In 1997, while employed in Guinness, I attended a 3 day MS Excel training course, along with about 11 co-workers from different departments.

It was facilitated by a Microsoft Certified Professional.

On the last day, the facilitator held up a copy of a Microsoft Excel 97/Visual Basic Step by Step  guide written by Reed Jacobson, and asked “Which one of you is Tayo Solagbade here?”

I raised my hand in surprise. I had deliberately stayed quiet since the course began, despite my considerable MS Excel passion. So I was surprised that he knew my name.

Looking at me he said “The IT guys in headquarters said you’re the only one who will understand what is in this book. That’s why I did not bother discussing macros. But we’re giving a copy to each person anyway.”

You may wonder where they got that impression about me from (?)

Well, I’d gained company wide reputation for using self-taught skills to develop automated spreadsheet applications, that had boosted my department’s data handling and report generation performance.

And I’d done all that without having access to ANY formal learning resources.

No training. No tutorials. Just self-tutoring with MS Excel Help.

The IT guys in my brewery came to be good friends with me as a result. And word eventually reached Lagos etc.

Within a Month, I’d Devoured the Entire Reed Jacobson Manual…

I also explored all the CDROM Excel workbook samples that came with it, and promptly began creating more sophisticated apps for use in my department.

In contrast, those with whom I attended the 3 day course (despite each getting a copy of the manual, which was for everyday users), did little or nothing.

In other words, I was the only one who went away, and actually did something with what I was GIVEN!

But I Had to Do So “Creatively”, In Order to Succeed

It’s important that I emphasize the word CREATIVELY.

For instance, the examples provided in Reed Jacobson’s macro programming manual were for financial reporting.

I was however working as a shift brewer in the production department.

So I had to develop applications for recording, and analyzing brewing production data, for report generation and decision making in BREWING, and not FINANCE.

Those were two very different scenarios.

As a result, I could not copy and DIRECTLY use what was in the manual or the sample MS Excel files on the CDROM.

I had to sit down, study my unique situation, and then adapt what I’d learnt to suit my needs.

It was far from being easy.

And it was not something that could be hurried.

But I had the passion and desire to influence change. I’d identified a need to move from tedious manual report preparation to time saving automated PC based report generation.

And I could see that MS Excel could help me achieve my goal.

The above state of mind set me apart from my “course mates”.

In Virtually Every Area of Life, the Same Process Occurs

I read Michel Fortin’s Ten Commandments of Power Positioning for the first time, as a start-up entrepreneur in January 2002.

And I immediately realized the ideas in it could help me achieve long term marketing reach and impact in my business.

So I re-read it REPEATEDLY, as he’d advised, until I internalized the key principles he advocated.

Then I diligently put them to use in everything I did, to promote my products and services.

The success I’m recording today is in part due to my successful use of Fortin’s Ten Commandments.

Another example: If you decide to hire a fitness coach to help you lose weight, you’ll need to DO what he tells you, and apply your creativity, where relevant, to keep going.

For instance, if you are married with kids, and your trainer is single, don’t sit down and grumble saying:

It’s easy for him to say. After all he does not have to worry about a spouse and kids. Why won’t he have time to do sit-ups and push ups!

The truth is some people will be in the same situation as you, and still get it done!

Take my example…

For years while still based in Lagos, Nigeria, I adapted in whatever ways I felt necessary, to ensure I NEVER missed my daily exercise routine.

And that included waking up BEFORE the kids did, and also WAITING till they all went to bed.

But when it was not possible to avoid them, I soon found it was best to simply ask the kids to join me!

Along with other distractions they created, my 3 year old was fond of climbing on my back as I did my push-ups.

Rather than get upset, I decided to use her as added weight – making my exercise regime tougher and at the same time fun-filled ;-)))

I’ve also used the same approach for getting my work done i.e. writing, and spreadsheet programming.

Don’t Expect Life to Present You the Same Challenges You Were Given in the Classroom (or Your Textbook)!

That would be naïve…and childish…and irresponsible :-))

Those who excel often refuse to let (what Burt Dubin calls) “sloth, indifference etc…” prevent them from creatively making the most of what they learn, to turn their circumstances around.

Read the life stories of Einstein, Brandson, Fela Kuti (who created, and used Afro Beat music to fight oppression) etc, and you’ll see what I mean.

They took what every other person already knew (or had access to), and used it differently (i.e. creatively), to achieve their goals.

In fact Fela’s legendary achievements – despite facing great adversity  for decades came mainly from doing that!

Successful coaches and mentors in all fields will confirm this to be true. Even in football.

Not every product of a football academy ends up being a Didier Drogba, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Very often, those who get to the top of the pile add creativity and persistence to the mix!

I’ve devoted countless hours to learning about writing and public speaking (e.g. from experts like Burt Dubin), towards developing strategies for marketing what I do.

At a point, my unique experiences trying to apply what I learnt, led me to develop what I call my Public Speaking for Business Marketing System™ (which I’ve used to win high paying clients).

Start creatively applying what you know, and anything you learn, so you can perform at a superior level.

This includes adapting whatever you pick up from a (formal or informal) mentor or coach, to suit the unique circumstances you encounter, at any point in time.

Do it right, and sooner than later, success will be yours.

To Succeed, Stop Waiting For a Perfect Moment or Idea

“No enterprise worthy of accomplishment would ever begin, if all obstacles were first to be overcome” – Napoleon Hill.

This article narrates a true story about how the foregoing words of wisdom helped me get my books published – and sold – in print as well as digitally, even when I had NO MONEY!

It All Began in Late 2002, My Start-up Year

I’d been delivering my 1 hour flagship talk in different organisations and their branches. And it was very well received everywhere I went. I got back lots of filled feed back forms with rave testimonials.

One day it occurred to me that I needed to find a way to use the web to promote my speaking service and message to more people.

I did not however have the funds I could commit, to paying for web design and hosting (at this time I’d not learnt web design).

Yet I Knew the Web Could Enable Me Get Word Out About My Talks at LOW to Zero Cost

So I began searching online in a café. A few later I discovered “scheduled auto responders” – and www.getresponse.com stood out with a FREE version packed with great features for beginners.

That was when the idea struck me: I could offer a weekly auto responder course without a website!

And it was perfect for my talk which was titled “Ten Ways You Can Use Self-Development to Create the Future You Want”.

Since it had 10 parts, I could make each part go out on a particular week. In effect, I ended up conceiving a 10 week auto responder email course!

Excited, I Quickly Sat Down and Wrote Out The Text of the Talk

I’d up till then delivered it using ONLY a 5 page (2 parts to a page) outline.

So, to write it out, I basically thought back to my outings and recalled the key points I discussed and wrote them down. Within 2 weeks I had written over 100 pages, comprising an introduction, all 10 chapters (or parts) and a conclusion/summary.

Next, I created a FREE account on www.getresponse.com (not sure if they still offer it today though) and setup the course using the content I’d written up.

Each “part” was to be delivered to a subscriber’s inbox weekly. After the 10th week, each person would get a final message thanking him/her. There was a short “blurb” announcing that I was available to speak etc. My phone number, email etc were appended.

I Had Something to Say, & Was Determined to Be Heard!

Looking back I believe I was able to succeed like I did because I focussed on using my experiences.

I drew inspiration by reflecting on the successes I’d achieved both in formal schooling (where I almost got a first class degree despite heavy extracurricular activities), and in paid employment (where rapid career success came via multiple self-taught skills I had).

I wanted my listeners/readers to know they could do what I’d done.

And I also intended to prove my ideas worked, by applying them in my new career as an entrepreneur (my successes since then confirm they do!)

Not surprisingly, my message resonated greatly with the audiences.

But I did not expect it would catch on as quickly as it when I put it online…

Within a week, over 20 people had signed up for the 10 week auto-responder e-course!

And I noticed about 40% of them were non-Nigerian, from the UK and one from the US. All of those “foreigners” indicated they were “referred by a friend”.

As you can imagine, by this time I’d tasted blood.

I began testing offers of different kinds, including training courses, talks, e-book writing services etc.

Guess what?

Some subscribers to the e-course wrote back asking if I could help them create digital versions of books they wanted to write, or already had on paper.

One such person travelled all the way down from Makurdi, Benue State, in the north of Nigeria, to meet with me in Lagos.

He brought with him a beautiful book manuscript which he wanted made into an e-book.

We’ve been friends on Facebook for years now.

But it all clicked for me when three different subscribers, at different times, after reading the latest “part” delivered to them, wrote to me asking:

“Is it possible to get the complete book, instead of having to wait a full week to read the next part?”

I was stunned.

Not once had the thought of writing a book occurred to me!

Then as I read those requests, it occurred to me that I’d ALREADY written THE complete book!

Parts 1 to 10 made up the different chapters.

All I needed was introduction/forewords and possibly a “summary” to end with.

So, once again, I settled down and did just that.

Like I always did when speaking, I made sure I wrote from my heart.

When it came to getting my “book” in print however, I soon discovered traditional publishing could cost an arm and a leg!

As usual, my stubborn attitude made me think there had to be another way.

Persistent searching eventually led me to discover Zero Cost Print On Demand publishing.

To cut the long story short, that book has been selling as a 113 page physical manual that I call the “Self-Development Bible” online since 2005.

And I’ve since added other books, in digital form – including my popular Livestock Feed Formulation Handbook – which just 2 days ago, recorded yet another sale from my online store.

Final Words: My Advice to You

Stop waiting for a perfect moment, or for everything to fall in place, or for your manuscript or idea to be perfect.

Start with what you have, where you are.

You’ll be surprised that whatever you need to dot your I’s and cross your T’s will spontaneously appear as, and when, you need it.

The key is to GET STARTED first!

PS: In 2004 I taught myself to build websites using Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop (with the aid of some international professional web design magazines – and CDROM tutorials that came with them).

Apart from building websites for clients, I’ve since built and maintained this multi-disciplinary website – www.spontaneousdevelopment.com – which I launched in June 2005.

Today, I focus my efforts on using Content Management Systems like Joomla! and WordPress, to build and maintain websites, while employing intelligent Web Marketing Systems to create and propagate their content for business promotion.

All of that continues to boost my search engine visibility – leading to more sales of my books and other products (like my Ration Formulator Software)!
