No. 131: To Succeed, Creatively Apply What You Learn

Albert Einstein underwent formal schooling. Did any of his school/class mates also become geniuses?

What about the legendary Afro Beat inventor, Fela Anikulapo Kuti (who studied music in a UK college)? Or Bill Gates? Richard Branson? Steve Jobs?

Why didn’t their classmates succeed like them?

Don’t Know About You, But I Have Always Wondered Why That Happens…

They all presumably attended the same classes, and were taught by the same teachers. And it’s not like those who became geniuses got extra coaching.

Indeed, quite a number of geniuses actually dropped out before completing their formal schooling.

So one would have imagined they’d have ended up worse off.

Instead, history shows they often did much better than those who finished school!

Why does this happen?

The Answer: Individuals Differ In Their Ability to Creatively Apply What They Know, and Learn

Genes may play a small role here, but it will not be a defining or limiting one.

This is why in societies across the world, we often come across many examples of people who achieve great things despite having little or nothing, in comparison to others who had everything given to them.

E.g. Persons who rise from rags to riches.

Knowing that they do not have anyone to depend on, they learn to look inwards and dig deep.

Sometimes they are so poor they cannot afford to attend school!

So they focus on their goals, and actively explore ways to progress, no matter how bleak things look.

And they never accept that what they want is impossible to get. This is a basic instinct that drives them.

They do not know how to give up!

Based on the Above, I Believe “Attitude” Is What Makes People Who Attend the Same Training, Perform Differently Afterwards

In 1997, while employed in Guinness, I attended a 3 day MS Excel training course, along with about 11 co-workers from different departments.

It was facilitated by a Microsoft Certified Professional.

On the last day, the facilitator held up a copy of a Microsoft Excel 97/Visual Basic Step by Step  guide written by Reed Jacobson, and asked “Which one of you is Tayo Solagbade here?”

I raised my hand in surprise. I had deliberately stayed quiet since the course began, despite my considerable MS Excel passion. So I was surprised that he knew my name.

Looking at me he said “The IT guys in headquarters said you’re the only one who will understand what is in this book. That’s why I did not bother discussing macros. But we’re giving a copy to each person anyway.”

You may wonder where they got that impression about me from (?)

Well, I’d gained company wide reputation for using self-taught skills to develop automated spreadsheet applications, that had boosted my department’s data handling and report generation performance.

And I’d done all that without having access to ANY formal learning resources.

No training. No tutorials. Just self-tutoring with MS Excel Help.

The IT guys in my brewery came to be good friends with me as a result. And word eventually reached Lagos etc.

Within a Month, I’d Devoured the Entire Reed Jacobson Manual…

I also explored all the CDROM Excel workbook samples that came with it, and promptly began creating more sophisticated apps for use in my department.

In contrast, those with whom I attended the 3 day course (despite each getting a copy of the manual, which was for everyday users), did little or nothing.

In other words, I was the only one who went away, and actually did something with what I was GIVEN!

But I Had to Do So “Creatively”, In Order to Succeed

It’s important that I emphasize the word CREATIVELY.

For instance, the examples provided in Reed Jacobson’s macro programming manual were for financial reporting.

I was however working as a shift brewer in the production department.

So I had to develop applications for recording, and analyzing brewing production data, for report generation and decision making in BREWING, and not FINANCE.

Those were two very different scenarios.

As a result, I could not copy and DIRECTLY use what was in the manual or the sample MS Excel files on the CDROM.

I had to sit down, study my unique situation, and then adapt what I’d learnt to suit my needs.

It was far from being easy.

And it was not something that could be hurried.

But I had the passion and desire to influence change. I’d identified a need to move from tedious manual report preparation to time saving automated PC based report generation.

And I could see that MS Excel could help me achieve my goal.

The above state of mind set me apart from my “course mates”.

In Virtually Every Area of Life, the Same Process Occurs

I read Michel Fortin’s Ten Commandments of Power Positioning for the first time, as a start-up entrepreneur in January 2002.

And I immediately realized the ideas in it could help me achieve long term marketing reach and impact in my business.

So I re-read it REPEATEDLY, as he’d advised, until I internalized the key principles he advocated.

Then I diligently put them to use in everything I did, to promote my products and services.

The success I’m recording today is in part due to my successful use of Fortin’s Ten Commandments.

Another example: If you decide to hire a fitness coach to help you lose weight, you’ll need to DO what he tells you, and apply your creativity, where relevant, to keep going.

For instance, if you are married with kids, and your trainer is single, don’t sit down and grumble saying:

It’s easy for him to say. After all he does not have to worry about a spouse and kids. Why won’t he have time to do sit-ups and push ups!

The truth is some people will be in the same situation as you, and still get it done!

Take my example…

For years while still based in Lagos, Nigeria, I adapted in whatever ways I felt necessary, to ensure I NEVER missed my daily exercise routine.

And that included waking up BEFORE the kids did, and also WAITING till they all went to bed.

But when it was not possible to avoid them, I soon found it was best to simply ask the kids to join me!

Along with other distractions they created, my 3 year old was fond of climbing on my back as I did my push-ups.

Rather than get upset, I decided to use her as added weight – making my exercise regime tougher and at the same time fun-filled ;-)))

I’ve also used the same approach for getting my work done i.e. writing, and spreadsheet programming.

Don’t Expect Life to Present You the Same Challenges You Were Given in the Classroom (or Your Textbook)!

That would be naïve…and childish…and irresponsible :-))

Those who excel often refuse to let (what Burt Dubin calls) “sloth, indifference etc…” prevent them from creatively making the most of what they learn, to turn their circumstances around.

Read the life stories of Einstein, Brandson, Fela Kuti (who created, and used Afro Beat music to fight oppression) etc, and you’ll see what I mean.

They took what every other person already knew (or had access to), and used it differently (i.e. creatively), to achieve their goals.

In fact Fela’s legendary achievements – despite facing great adversity  for decades came mainly from doing that!

Successful coaches and mentors in all fields will confirm this to be true. Even in football.

Not every product of a football academy ends up being a Didier Drogba, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Very often, those who get to the top of the pile add creativity and persistence to the mix!

I’ve devoted countless hours to learning about writing and public speaking (e.g. from experts like Burt Dubin), towards developing strategies for marketing what I do.

At a point, my unique experiences trying to apply what I learnt, led me to develop what I call my Public Speaking for Business Marketing System™ (which I’ve used to win high paying clients).

I also wrote:Proven Techniques (And Strategies) You Can Use To Start and Finish Writing ANYTHING”.

These, along with other creative efforts, helped me relentlessly build marketing reach and impact on, and off the web. The resulting name recognition has led to sales of my products and services.

Key point: Rather than simply transplant them, I found ways to ADAPT the ideas I learnt about, to suit my unique situation!

And It’s a Continuous Process: Your Subsequent Efforts BUILD on Past Ones

That way, nothing is wasted!

As an expert in your field, you want potential clients to choose you over competitors.

Start creatively applying what you know, and anything you learn, so you can perform at a superior level.

This includes adapting whatever you pick up from a (formal or informal) mentor or coach, to suit the unique circumstances you encounter, at any point in time.

Do it right, and sooner than later, success will be yours.

Why 30 out of 31 Aspiring Speakers Do Not Succeed (2 Tips) – By Burt Dubin

According to Burt Dubin (who has mentored some of the highest paid International Speakers in the world – some becoming  CSPs i.e. Certified Speaking Professionals), it is a lack of the two qualities discussed in this issue that often makes 30 out of 31 wannabe speakers fail. What follows is my paraphrased version of Burt’s discussion. It’s based on excerpts transcribed from a SpeakerMatch Radio teleseminar hosted by Brian Caplovitz (the host). I call it a “mined transcript version”.

***************************************

1. They Lack Resolute Tenacity

The Speaking Industry Has Changed Over 30 Years, But the Need for RESOLUTE TENACITY Has Not

Bryan noted that Burt Dubin (his guest on SpeakerMatch Radio) had been around for about 3 decades. During this period, lots of changes had occurred in the speaking industry, in contrast to what obtained when Burt got started around 30 years earlier.

He added that one thing Burt said had not changed in all that time, was (and is) the need for tenacity – resolute tenacity.

From here on, I paraphrase Burt Dubin…

This Speaking Business (and you need to think of it as a business to succeed) is not an easy business. It is the most difficult business I’ve ever been in, and the most rewarding.

Most people do not succeed. I repeat: Most people do not succeed. My own rule of thumb –note that this is just empirical – is that about 30 out of 31 people that enter the business dreaming of success, big money fine restaurants and all of that, do not make it.

And the primary reason that people do not make is a lack of tenacity.

It’s takes tenacity. It takes bulldog blood. Now you may not know exactly what I mean by bulldog blood. So let me tell you a short story which will illustrate that:

Suppose there’s a bad guy approaching your house with an ominous look on his face – and you own a bulldog.

The bulldog sees this bad guy approaching, and attacks him, bites him hard in the ankle. Well this bad guy has a nice big knife. He stabs your beloved bulldog and sadly ends the dog’s life.

The dog is dead now. And he thinks well now I can get into the house and do my harm.

But that dog’s teeth do not let go their grip even in death! It takes the police finally with the jaws of life of the fire dept to pry those teeth away from his leg.

That is tenacity; it is never giving up regardless of what!

If You Give Up, You’ll Never Make It To The Big Time!

If you do give up as most people do, you doom yourself to live in the mire of mediocrity. You might make it to the K-marts of the speaking business, the low end programs in the darkest room or the farthest hall in the hotel.

I’ve done those in my early days :-)

But you never make it to the big room. You never make it to the big time. You never make it to not having to look on the right side of the menu (where the price is stated).

How To Develop Your Personal Tenacity

Now the question comes up – how to develop your personal tenacity?

It’s a matter of defying your demons.

What are these demons?

Anything in the way of your actualizing your potential is a demon. As a speaker, your purpose will be to make a difference in the lives of people and affairs of organizations.

Anything that gets in the way is a demon!

All you can do is be incorrigible to an extreme, letting nothing, but nothing, get in your way!

Only 1 in 30 i.e. 3%, have this quality. But anyone can develop it – including you.

2. They Lack Authenticity

Tenacity Is Not All That It Takes – You Also Need Authenticity.

You need a lot more than tenacity. It takes among other things, being authentic on the platform. It takes revealing your true essence as you stand before audiences. Standing before them say psychologically unclothed. Here I am folks, warts and all, with all my human frailties.

You see it is not so much the words you say important though those words may be; it is not your stories, entertaining those stories may be; it is not your humor, hilarious though it may be.

What it is, is your essence…your core.

And you cannot hide this from people. It reveals itself…they just know it. Whether they’re looking at you or hearing you speak on the phone.

Your state of being is something you cannot conceal. Stand before people knowing you’re an imperfect being. Imperfect though you are, you may have wonderful ideas to share with them.

To Develop Your Authenticity, Make Yourself A Model of The Possible

And so the important thing is that you make of yourself as you stand before the audience, for that matter as you live your life, as a model of the possible.

Think of the Greek statues that you may remember from your ancient history. They were physically models of the possible.

Gene Houston – years and years ago – wrote a book called The Possible Human. I don’t even know if the book is still in print. However, if you make it your ideal, to be the possible human, the ultimate possible human…you will move ahead faster.

Again Mahatma Ghandi. A very famous quote, by Mahatma Ghandi – Be the change you want to see in the world. What is the population of the ideal world? How do the ideal people conduct themselves? Be that person.

Make yourself accountable for your presence here. In fact, be the authentic you, as you share your wisdom.

You can be an ordinary person (I’m an ordinary person) and you can share extraordinary concepts. Simple as that.

Summary

In essence I’ve talked about what they’re not telling you in speaking business school. In the speaker school you get told to make a demo CD and compile a list of prospects. That’s standard procedure to build your business.

What is however (often) left out is the need for resolute tenacity and authenticity, which I’ve highlighted here. You need those 2 to make your speaking business really take off.

Final Words: Once You Have Tenacity & Authenticity, What’s Next?

If you’re an aspiring speaker reading this, it is assumed that you at least have the skill to speak in front of an audience. (If not, join Toastmasters, and start learning, or get a competent mentor to help you.)

Once you have tenacity and authenticity, another quality you need to develop, in order to become one of the very few who succeed as speakers is described here (click now).

And while you’re at it, if anyone tells you that you can’t, read this past issue of the Speaking IDEAS newsletter titled “How to Do the Impossible (5 Tips You Can Use)” to discover why they would be wrong!

Success Is A Lousy Teacher – Bill Gates

The above title is a verbatim excerpt of the first of two phrases comprising an insightful quote credited to Microsoft founder, Bill Gates. When I first read it, I instantly said to myself: “That’s TRUE!” And Mr. Gates should know – having enjoyed years of continuous successes prior to his anti-trust experiences.

The quote reads in full as follows:

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.” – Bill Gates (Source: Page 163 of Readers Digest, readersdigest.com 8/2010)

No. 78: Success Is A Lousy Teacher – Bill Gates

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.sdacademy.org to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

The above title is a verbatim excerpt of the first of two phrases comprising an insightful quote credited to Microsoft founder, Bill Gates. When I first read it, I instantly said to myself: “That’s TRUE!” And Mr. Gates should know – having enjoyed years of continuous successes prior to his anti-trust experiences.

The quote reads in full as follows:

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.” – Bill Gates (Source: Page 163 of Readers Digest, readersdigest.com 8/2010)

Success Can Set You Up To Fail, If You’re Careless

Sometimes a person succeeds at first attempt in a chosen endeavour. It could be a totally new field or one previously existing. In some cases, she may inherit success from another e.g. a successful family business passed down from parent to child.

However, except proper orientation/coaching is given to her, there’s a real danger she may be unable to maintain that level of success, once she’s left alone.

That’s why I believe that a person who claims never to have failed (if he’s telling the truth) has yet to fully test himself in the sea of life’s challenges. Indeed I would argue that such a person is not yet fully formed, and can lay no legitimate claim to being successful in the real sense of the word.

This is because success on its own lacks the ingredients to deliver adequate useful instruction for its perpetuation. That crucial input is most often provided by failure. I say this from very personal experience – and also from studying the lives and writings of many successful people.

Below, I discuss 3 major areas in which I’ve found success to be a poor teacher:

1. Success Will Not Drive You to Constantly Create & Innovate

It’s failure that does that. When you become successful as a speaker, unless you’re disciplined about it, you may feel no need to keep creating and innovating. After all, you’ll be getting invited and well paid to speak. And you’ll be applauded often.

But that’s where the danger lies: Successful people tend to be in great demand. This leaves them less time to “think” of ways to improve. Some become complacent as a result, so that when more competent rivals show up, they end up losing out.

Question: Have you recently created any new speaking programs, materials, and other useful content that you can offer your target market? Do you have a plan for researching that, so you can always offer a constant flow of new content to attract meeting planners? Have you considered converting your content to formats that could generate passive income for you – and at the same time consolidate your brand presence?

Click here to view examples of thought leading information products created by Burt Dubin, with some of the world’s highest paid speakers attesting to the value he offers.

2. Success Will Not Compel You to Monitor Important Trends

Again it’s the experience of failure that does that. People who failed often admit looking back to analyze why. Upon identifying the cause of their setback, they formed the habit of monitoring relevant trends, to avoid a future mishap.

Again it takes being disciplined to keep this up once success has been achieved. For those who fail to establish that mindset, they end up losing when they least expect it.

Question: What’s changed (or changing) in your target market? How are events being organized or sponsored now, compared to last year or two? Is there something you can change in your marketing strategy to get better attention from potential clients? Are there new topics that seem to interest decision makers more, that you need to develop your expertise on?

Burt Dubin’s Speaking Success System is based on over 2 decades of relentless research on the latest developments and trends in the speaking business. Click here to learn more.

3. Success Will Not Challenge You to be Frugal

Success allows you to get easily reckless if you choose to. Unlike failure, which causes you to stop, step back and think more carefully, about all you did, and want to do.

Dan Kennedy once wrote that he had become convinced that being adequately capitalized can actually be more of a curse than a blessing for a business.

And that’s because human nature thrives most when a little deprivation exists. The truth is that an atmosphere of abundance does not evoke the desire to conserve resources.

A successful person is so described because she’s doing well. Quite often in society, that implies she’s getting handsomely rewarded in material and monetary terms. Such absence of lack can make the uninitiated individual fail to apply common sense. So you could have her failing to be prudent in spending/using resources.

Question: Does it make sense to go mailing out volumes of printed information pack to meeting planners you’ve never spoken with? Email can be used to make first contact and establish potential interest in your speaking services. So can the telephone. They help you reduce the number of people you may have to use expensive paper based correspondence to initiate contact with.

Everyone Needs Coaching – Even YOU

PREVEIW: This week’s issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter is based – in part – on excerpts from my latest ebook titled “Why You Keep Failing To Achieve Your Writing Goals!” – for which I recently published a press release.

Even if you’re on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there” – Anon

I’m good at learning and doing new stuff by myself. Yet, I readily take advantage of any opportunity to improve myself by learning from others. My personal philosophy is based on the principle of continuous improvement, and this corresponding definition of success:

“Success is a journey in the never ending pursuit of excellence – and not a destination.”

I happen to believe I can learn from anyone regardless of age, gender, race or any other factor. As far as I’m concerned, as long as that person knows (or can do) something I want to know (or be able to do) to become better, s/he can be my coach. Period. Those who know me will confirm I practice what I preach.

New EBook for Writers Uncovers 10 Often Overlooked Habits Keeping Many from Achieving Their Writing Goals

No. 63: Everyone Needs Coaching – Even YOU

This week’s issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter is based – in part – on excerpts from my latest ebook titled “Why You Keep Failing To Achieve Your Writing Goals!” – for which I recently published a press release.

This attitude has helped me achieve tremendous success in a wide variety of endeavours – to the surprise of many.

And that’s why I also make a point of giving credit to those who “coach” me to success in any areas of my life.

My First Personal Paid Coach

For instance, up till this day, I tell all who will listen, that my strong foundation in basic HTML, which proves so valuable – even today – in managing my websites and blogs, was developed way back in 1998.

Back then, over a period of about 8 weeks (of one-on-one personal paid coaching), Victor – a light complexioned teenage operative in Benin city’s Prest Cyber Cafe painstakingly taught me most of what I know today about HTML website design.

Understand this: I was a high performing middle level manager in a large corporate multinational. When the Internet “movement” came into town, I quickly saw the opportunities it could create for me.

So, in my usual early adopter manner, I went all out to find out what I could do to get competently involved in its use. A few visits to cyber cafes around soon made it clear there was a lot to learn before one could graduate from being just a content viewer/user on the Internet, to become a contributor (e.g. content publisher) on it.

And I instinctively knew I wanted to belong to the latter group. So, I dispensed with my advanced spreadsheet applications developer “bragging rights” earned inside my company, and accepted the humble cap of a “website developer wannabe” – with my teenage coach.

For me, it took only a few seconds to make this mental switch.

I however realise that for some people in a similar position (especially in my part of the world), it may take considerable effort to do what I did.

That is: to “travel by bus” – everyday – from my air conditioned office, to a run down cafe on the other side of town, to learn from a “small cyber cafe operator boy” who did not even have any formal credentials to show :-)

Build On What Your Coach Gives You

The way I saw it, all I needed to know was that he could create web pages using HTML code in notepad, and add (at the time) impressive looking GIF animations to them.

That was enough for me. And I knew that once I had learnt the basic stuff from him, my well developed aptitude for self-tutoring would take over.

It’s over 14 years afterwards, and that’s exactly what has happened.

Without attending any other formal coaching classes, I have successfully built on the foundation Victor gave me, to become highly proficient at developing websites, and other web based resources.

But even during that time, I’ve periodically identified a need to get coached by different people in other areas of interest. So, you see, it’s a continuous process.

And it should be that way for every person who wishes to operate at close to his/her fullest potential at all times. No one ever knows it all.

We must continually strive to improve ourselves – even when people already call us the best. That’s what keeps true champions at the top of their fields (or sports) for decades on end e.g Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Michael Jordan etc. You know their kind :-)

Not Everyone Can Successfully Self-Tutor: Coaching Support Can Take You To The Next Level!

Fifteen years of coaching people from different backgrounds and age groups, have however taught me that not everyone is comfortable with self-tutoring like I am.

This does not mean they are weak. We all just have different learning styles. Some of us do better when we have someone – constantly available – to guide and challenge us (and even cheer from the sidelines), as we aim for new heights of achievement.

Indeed, certain people who have already reached a respectable level of success may now need coaching intervention to revamp their “plateaued” careers!

For instance there are the seeming one-hit wonders in different fields e.g. The guy who made it big last year and has since “gone quiet”. Quite often coaching support can help such persons rediscover themselves.

A coach can guide you to effectively address factors that may be affecting your progress. In addition s/he can help you hone your skills so that you become better over time.

Even people who are already doing well, look for coaching support to improve themselves. This applies to all areas of our lives – including public speaking.

Avoid The Trap of Thinking You CANNOT Need Help

As experts-who-speak, there’s a real danger of assuming that because people look up to us for learning or information, we may not need anyone to learn from.

The reality is however very different. Majority of the world’s most productive people have been known to readily acknowledge specific people in their personal and work lives for providing them with valuable coaching feedback.

The relationship may be formal or semi-formal (like the one Oprah Winfrey shares with her popular fitness and health coach). At other times it could be informal – like the one Michael Jordan shared with his late father.

What is important to note is that these successful people realised they needed help to not only stay at their best, but also to improve on their achievements.

The minute you conclude you have nothing new to learn from anyone else, you set a trap of ultimate retrogression for yourself.

And it WILL show through eventually – because when you do not seek ways to add value to yourself, you will eventually run out of “value” you can add to others. And those who learn from you will eventually discover that you have less to offer.

When you no longer add value to audiences as a speaker, guess what will happen when next they seek a speaker for their event…? Your phone may probably not be the one that rings…I’m sure you know what I mean :-)

Final Words: Nature, Indeed Life As A Whole, Abhors imbalance!

The Chinese famously talk about the opposing “Ying” and “Yang” life forces. In science we learnt about action and the equal and opposite reaction.

You and I – we all – are a part of a balanced universal ecosystem. You cannot be different when it comes to this rule: you must strike a similar balance in your own life, otherwise you will struggle to achieve your full potential.

Yet again, the amazing (late) Jim Rohn comes to my rescue with another very apt quote:

“We could all use a little coaching. When you’re playing the game, it can be hard to think of everything.” – Jim Rohn

So, let me now urge you to take a deep and honest look today at yourself. Where are you NOW, in your career as an expert-who-speaks?

Ask yourself if you could do better than you are currently doing.

Then look around (online and off the net) for persons who can help you improve yourself.

It’s important to emphasise here that you do NOT necessarily have to make direct contact with the individual you decide to make your coach.

If s/he offers resources like websites, blogs, newsletters you can use to gain access to his/her “wisdom”, start with those. Then over time, gravitate towards making direct contact if/when you feel prepared to take your relationship to that next level.

Sometimes what you get through the remote resources may end up being all you need. At other times, you may discover you need more personalised attention via paid telephone mentoring and so on.

What’s important is that you take action to get the coaching help you need. By so doing, you’ll be better positioned to achieve your most valued goals. And one day you will look back with a sense of fulfillment at your worthwhile accomplishments.

No. 60: Should Your Market Something You Won’t Deliver?

I want to tell you a story (names, location etc changed for privacy). A real-life experience that I had very, very recently. At the end, I simply ask YOU to be the judge as to what really happened.

It was a Friday morning. I had gone out with my 3 year old daughter to make a few purchases at the computer village. On my way back to the car, I ran into a gentleman who managed a financial institution I periodically visited (let’s call him "Triks").

We exchanged pleasantries, then the following conversation ensued:

Triks: You know I’ve been thinking of inviting you to an event for some time now, but it’s always skipped my mind. We have a business meeting male members of our church normally hold on Saturdays that I really want you to attend. You know we all need to network to take our businesses to the next level.

Me: You’re right about that. Where’s your meeting taking place?

Triks: Oh, it’s at the popular Ikeja guest house over on Allen Avenue. I’m sure you’ll know it.

Me: Yes, I do know it. (Then sensing the details were incomplete, I asked) Are you sure it’s just a business meeting? Or is it one of these Business Men’s Fellowship things that many church organisations out here often hold?

Triks: Well ( that was actually more like "weeellllll") yes it’s a Business Men’s Fellowship, but actually we meet for mostly business – very little religious stuff happens. It’s not a service or any kind.

Me: Are you sure about that?

Triks: Of course. You just come and you’ll see what I mean

Me: Okay. What time does it start?

Triks: It starts at 2pm prompt. We are very strict on time. And it ends 3 hours later, by 5pm

Me: Alright then, no problem. I’ll be there. (I switch my daughter who I’m carrying, to my left arm, so I can shake his hand with my right. Then I start to leave).

Triks: Just a moment. Let me give you an invitation card. He fills my name, email address and phone number on to a bottom section that he tears off for himself. Then he hands me the upper part which has the venue address, and date/time printed on it.

Business Men’s Meeting Becomes Business Men’s Religious Service

The event day arrives, and as is my usual habit, I pick on one of my sons to go out with me, just to see what my world is like. This time, it’s my second son, EWe arrive at the guest house venue at 2.05pm.

Right at the double doors, a well dressed young man is seated behind a desk. He smiles warmly at us and pushes a form across the table for me to fill. After that he hands my son a gift pen, and offers me one as well. I politely assure him the one for my son will do for us both.

We are ushered into the meeting room, which has seats that I quickly estimate would take about 30 to 40 persons. As we take our seats close to the front of the room, I note the time is  2.15 p.m.

A casual look around the room indicates that Triks, who invited me, is yet to arrive. But I soon realize there’s something to while away the time with, as a young pretty lady with an amazingly powerful voice begins singing song after song (church type), accompanied by a pianist/vocal support chap.

Time flies by quickly – thanks to the excellent singing by the duo mentioned above. When check again, it’s 3.05p.m!

I decide it may be time to leave, because no serious business meeting could be that delayed without any formal announcement. All I had seen from our arrival was some strange obsession by most of the few people present (including some officers) to take photos of us as we registered, and then as we sat down. Not just of us – but we got a decent share. And that had me wondering for a bit…

So, I whisper for E to follow me, as I get up and walk briskly towards the door. Out of the corner of my right eye, I see a figure quickly approach, and tap me on the shoulder. It’s Triks.

Me: Oh, so you’re here at last.

Triks: Yes, I’m sorry I came late. Something came up last minute. We’ve not started the meeting because we’re actually waiting for the pastor…

(As he spoke, I could not help wondering what the pastor’s absence had to do with starting a supposed "business meeting" organized for members of his church. And then again there was the issue of a total disregard for time keeping by either him or the meeting planners or both. We were over 1 hour behind schedule – judging from the start time printed on the card I was given and NOT ONE WORD had been said about it!).

Me: You told me the meeting would start at 2 pm, and now it’s after 3 pm and nothing.

Triks: Well actually, we start at 3 pm. We only print the 2pm on the card to provide time for the musical interlude etc, and allow people to get here.

(Even as he said this, the seats were far from half filled, and members were still trickling in. If anyone was concerned about keeping to time, they certainly were not showing it! "What manner of business men are these exactly?" I asked myself)

Me: Look, I came because I gave you my word, and did not want to break a promise. But I’ve actually had a long day, and really need to get back home for some rest. Your meeting looks like it’s running late, and I don’t think I can wait anymore.

Triks: No, no, no! Please wait. I’m sure we’ll start soon. Sorry about the delay.

Me: Okay, let’s wait another 30 minutes. (By this time it’s already 3.30pm – 1.5 hours lost!)

As I return to my seat with my son, I notice heads turned in our direction, with people nodding politely at us in greeting. I respond accordingly, and we finally get seated again.

Thankfully, a flurry of activities commences, ending with a plump looking middle aged man stepping up in front of the room. The first confirmation of my suspicion that the event may not be what I think it is comes when he raises a massive looking Bible in his hands and shouts "Men, praise the Lord!"

Ten minutes later, I’m wondering to myself "Where did the business meeting go?" – because I discover I’m in the middle of some kind of fellowship pre-Sunday sermon delivery. In fact the closest thing to business I noticed anyone had with them were Ipads – but even those featured electronic bibles and not business related stuff.

It’s Time To Leave

Turning to E, I ask "Does this look to you like a business meeting?"

He replies "No."

"Let’s go", I tell him, and we once again head for the door. Not surprisingly, Triks is seated right at the exit (or for my purposes, "the escape"…lol!).

Triks: Oh, you’re leaving. Well I know you’re tired as you’ve said. So you need to take a rest. Thanks for coming in all the same.

Me: Yes, I really do need to get that rest. But the main reason I have to leave is that you told me this was to be a business meeting, Triks. What I see happening is a sermon or fellowship of some sort!

Triks: Yes. Actually we always start with this kind of quick service and then towards the tail end there is a short session on business.

Me: Oh, really. Well I guess I’m going to have to miss that then. Maybe another time.

We smile, shake hands and separate.

Trickery Kills Trust!

Now, like I promised at the start of this piece, let me ask: what is YOUR impression of what happened? Do you think that Triks was sincere, candid, direct, open and honest in the way he got me to attend his event?

Did he give me an accurate picture of what the event was about? Or was he economical with some aspects of the truth, possibly to make me more willing to attend?

Whatever conclusions you draw, my main reason for sharing this story is to encourage the reader to act with honesty and integrity at all times.

This becomes even more important when you are a speaker marketing to prospective or potential clients.

Marketing and sales go together. You can have multiple products or services. But you need to focus on delivering the specific ones a potential buyer expresses interest in AFTER you’ve shown him ALL you have to offer for instance.

To me, that implies that if someone phones me for 2GB flash drives, and I only have 1 GB flash drives in my computer store available at that time, I should tell him THAT. And not tell him I have 2 GB flash drives that he needs, then when he arrives try to pressure him to buy them saying "It’s the same thing. You only need to use two instead of one to get 2GB capacity you need."

Why not let the intending buyer decide that? Why not tell him/her the truth so s/he can decide whether or not to buy what you have, or move on.

Why risk having someone resent you for using "trickery" or deception to waste his/her time???

As A Speaker, Deliver What You Promise

Which brings me to my message for this week. Let me ask you this question:When you market your products and services as a speaker, what do you PROMISE to deliver? And how does that compare to what you eventually deliver?

If you are profess to being a change management speaker, how much of your content/material delivers satisfactory change management education EXPECTED by your client’s audience. Do they leave your events wondering where all those promises went? Or do they emerge raving about how you exceeded their expectations?

I have attended an event where a speaker spent over 80% of the time quoting bible passages, instead of sharing quality experiences/insights about SPECIFIC steps he took to achieve success as an entrepreneur. And yet, the latter was what the event topic promised. Personally, I left that event feeling disappointed!

Here’s A Real Life Example Of How Not Meeting Expectations Can Cost You:

I will never forget how a former expatriate boss of mine told me to suspend a particular external training service provider. He had examined handouts the consultant gave out to the brewery engineering tradesmen on maintenance of pipes used for beer transfer, and he discovered the manual bore the name of the oil company it was originally prepared for!

Get this: Pipes used to transfer crude oil are COMPLETELY different from those used for beer (consumable beverages!) transfer.

For a consultant to promise to provide training for maintenance operatives in a food processing company, and then turn around to use training materials from a crude oil processing outfit was unpardonable. Ethically, and in any other sense. And it was a breach of trust that could not be over looked.

In an environment where merit and quality performance are valued, using trickery to market yourself will only hurt you in the long run. You will look bad, lose face, lose people’s trust – and ultimately lose relevance.

So, even when others seem to be getting away with it, don’t do it. You’ll build a rock-solid reputation of integrity that WILL eventually lead to multiple rewards later on, from those who appreciate it.

Final Words: The Need To Keep An Open Mind On Religion

Just in case anyone’s taken offence (though I doubt it), please sheath your swords. This is NOT an anti-religion piece. I simply use it to offer clarity of thought to those who may need it.

All who know me, and who read my writing, will likely know I am NOT religious. I do not attend church, mosque or any religious meetings in order to worship the creator. But despite that, I keep an open mind. I honour invitations when I can. But not to have myself "sold" on what to believe.

For decades since my third year in the university, when I stopped attending church (more on that in a future write-up), I have found keeping an open mind this way to be beneficial in many ways.

You learn so much more because you are not blinded by some baseless need to promote (or defend) your religion as being better or preferable to others. I mean, does God really need anyone to defend (or fight for) him. Really?? I doubt it.

A few years back, I attended an interesting anniversary programme organized by the Rosicrucian church (AMORC), at the Airport Hotel in Lagos. I was invited by a friend – AK – who had returned from the US with his Austrian wife. They had both told me about their interest in meditation, and other related spiritual stuff.

When AK discovered I was not a church-goer he began to refer to me as a "Seeker". And he would get books of all kinds on spirituality, astrology etc, for me to read and "discover truths". I did read them, but nothing I read swayed me enough to "join" their group in order to feel closer to the creator. I had established my own way of doing that many years ago, and only sought to improve on that method.

Proof of this is reflected in the confidence with which I readily entertain others who choose to engage me based on their beliefs. I never feel threatened or fear that they will "convince" me to go against my beliefs.

The only way that can happen to anyone is if you do NOT know or are not really convinced of what you believe. Once you have conviction, nothing that comes your way can shake you. You will handle ALL with ease.

Sometimes we’ll agree. Other times we won’t. In the latter case, we would simply agree to disagree :-)

Leaders like the Dalai Lama understand the need to maintain this kind of mind set. It’s therefore no surprise that they enjoy the respect, and followership, of millions of people worldwide who individually nurture wide ranging religious beliefs and preferences.

I refuse to accept that the creator needs a particular religious sales and marketing campaign to sell him to others. God is NOT for sale. And God does not practice or advocate a religion. All human beings are equal and the same before the creator. Your actions or inactions are not measured based on the religion group you belong.

This is an entirely spiritual process – not subject to human biases. It all happens between each human spirit and the creator’s. More people need to understand that THAT is why they must find their own way to connect with their maker.

Going around trying to trick others to join your movement will only make those who are well grounded in their own beliefs stop trusting you.

Let me end by paraphrasing the late Gani Fawehinmi based on what he once said about a certain contemporary leader:

Certain people have such a bad reputation for being deceptive, that when they say ‘Good Morning’ to you, it’s wiser to look out the window and check FIRST that it is really morning, BEFORE you respond to their greeting!

Hi,

Please find below the latest issue of my weekly Public Speaking Ideas page for 2012.

=====

No. 56: When to Walk Away…

Not every prospect or client that comes along with an offer will be a good fit for you. Knowing when to walk away is therefore a valuable skill.

If you accept work from everyone who makes an offer, there’s a good chance you’ll hurt your business eventually.

Many business owners make this mistake at least once. And it can be quite hard to get over. Sometimes they make the mistake because they need the business. Or because they got carried away by a wave of success and let their defenses drop.

So, they fail to notice the obvious warning signs that appear during their discussions with a prospect or client.

This can lead to a humiliating experience for them. For instance, they could end up negotiating in a needy manner…allowing the client dictate what to pay, how to pay and when to pay (to paraphrase Jason Leister) – and even how the work is to be done.

I’ve made these mistakes many times in the past. I sometimes did so because I wanted to “help” the clients. Unfortunately, some clients interprete such willingness to imply you’re desperate for work. And they naturally seek to make the most of the opportunity.

If you give in, you only set yourself up for a figurative uppercut from greedy clients. Not a smart way to do business. Such clients ONLY care about themselves. They will say – and do – anything to get what they want. And that includes telling bare faced lies.

Here are three warning signals to watch out for:

1. Carrot Dangling: An elderly prospect once said to me…

“Look, the board hasn’t released the main funds yet. So, we’re not exactly buoyant right now. If you speak for a low price now, there’s a big conference we’re planning to do in a few weeks. We’ll simply award it to you. Let’s just get to know each other with this one by using it as a run up to the main job you’ll be doing for us.

I’ve heard this line from CEOs of hotels, the training manager of a government agency and even church leaders. Not one came through with the promised follow up work!

With those lessons in my experience bag, I now give the following polite response to others who try using the same line on me:

That’s okay. Let’s just do what you can afford to pay for now. When your funds are released, we can always continue from where we stopped. I personally prefer working on the bird in hand.

And like I’ve written elsewhere, I always do it with a big smile on my face. Some still take offense though, telling me I’m too rigid. Hmm…I hear you!

2. Reluctance to Talk Money: Sometimes you’ll meet a prospect or client who talks all about the work s/he wants done, and asks a battery of questions to confirm you are competent.

But s/he never asks what your fees are, or how much it will cost to deliver your talk program. When this happens, watch out!

Such persons usually come unprepared to offer worthwhile remuneration. And when you do bring it up, they’re likely to favour haggling as opposed to negotiating. Most times, such exchanges will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

If you notice the above warning signal, prepare to walk away. The client and his/her offer may not be a good fit for you.

3. Tag Teaming: Some prospects/clients may try to put you in direct competition with another provider, who more often than not WILL be in on the game they’re playing. They create the impression that someone else is ready to do the job for next to nothing. This is so as to force you to accept a much lower fee that you normally would.

Here’s a real-life example of how you can handle an attempt to treat you this way:

We were discussing details of the final aspect of a project he wanted to assign to me, which I was to give him a quote for.

But Tayo, the other guy who does my programming can also do this, and I’m sure he’ll do it for next to nothing.” said the client.

Then he went out to the outer office, brought back the other guy, and went through the motions of explaining what the issue was, to him.

The “programmer” (not surprisingly) said “Of course I can do it. In fact, the method I’ll use will produce equally good, if not better reports”.

The client (now literally drooling at the thought that I’d cave in) said:

That’s what I was just saying. The only difference is that Tayo’s method is a bit faster. Otherwise, your method can deliver the same output that his does. In fact I’m thinking maybe Tayo should hold on and let me try your way first.”

As I watched them, I knew it was time to walk away. I’d seen a “Tag team act” before. And I disliked the exploitative intention.

So, I said “I have a better idea. Why not simply use his solution? There’s no point killing a fly with a hammer. Once his solution already meets your needs, why pay to get mine?

Both men looked up at me in surprise. I pretended not to notice. “No, no. You don’t understand. I think I’ll still need to come back to you” the client blurted out.

I countered by saying: “But why? From what your man here has said, he has a solution that will work just like you want. To be honest, I’m a bit relieved and also happy for you. At least you won’t have to spend too much to get what you want.

I threw in a few jokes for effect, as we debated the matter. But I gently pressured them to accept my proposal. Their smiles were noticeably strained as I shook hands with them and departed. But I was done. I wasn’t going to let anyone keep me dangling on a string.

However, it did not end there.

Three weeks later, the client called. By some strange coincidence, I was right across the road from his office at the time. So, when he asked if I could pop in, I agreed.

I arrived to learn they had some issues manipulating Excel database records using the other guy’s method. He needed to query the database to isolate unique records. “What’s the problem?” I asked. He said “When I do it, I keep getting duplicates in my results.

I replied “Well I initially had a similar challenge, and found a way around it. Just specify additional criteria from the database fields to enable you eliminate the duplicates. Unfortunately, I don’t know your method. But you understand what I mean, right?

He nodded and smiled uncomfortably, mumbling something about the data provided by the client not being “clean”. I pointed out that I’d had to contend with that same challenge. “Do what I did – help him clean it where possible!” I said with a smile.

At this point I thought: “I don’t want to be pulled any further into this. The sooner I get out of here, the better.” So, I politely excused myself and left (with the client saying “Ah, you’re always in a hurry. Anyway, I’m still going to call you etc”).

Conclusion

Once again I had known when to walk away – with my dignity intact. I’d shown my willingness to clarify issues relating to the work I’d already done. But as soon as I’d established that the problem they were having had nothing to do with me, I knew it was time to leave. If the client wished to bring me in, we would have to discuss that.

Not knowing when to walk away can set you up to be exploited. You’ll come away feeling used and dumped. And you’d have no one to blame but yourself. I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end. And I’ve learnt to protect myself. You should too.
