One GREAT Place Many Online Service Providers FORGET to Look for Clients Today!

If you use the web a lot to find clients, you may be ignoring this potentially great source of “buyers” for your writing (or other) services. This happens because the Internet tends to seduce people into thinking they will be seen by all those they need to reach, once they’re there.

The hard (or harsh?) truth is YOU won’t!

Why? Because some potentially profitable buyers of your services could be “searching” for what you offer, but they may be offline! Yes, even in this day and age – and not just in my part of the world too!

What’s more, sometimes these offline (or web-indifferent) potential buyers many not even realise they need your help.

In other words, their need for your writing (or virtually any other) service would still be un-felt or unconscious. It is therefore only if/when you show up, and point it out, that they might decide it’s worth doing something about. Since they’re offline, your best bet to get their attention would be to look for them there i.e. offline.

I suggest 2 specific examples of such potentially profitable clients – likely – to be found offline.

1. Wealthy, Retired/Aged – But Offline – Persons With a Story to Tell, or Something to Teach

They’re rich, and have been that way possibly for decades. They probably did most of their wealth building the old fashioned way. For those that own companies, they probably don’t directly run them, and instead have young and smart CEOs who report to them periodically on the state of affairs.

Most will often say they’re too old to be bothered about straining themselves to use make elaborate use of computers and the Internet.

These kinds of people often have stories buried in them. Some may even nurse the desire to not just write a book, but also to offer coaching ideas for others.

Put your expertise to use here. Identify people like this and “sell” the idea of ghost-writing for them to achieve such goals. It could take some doing, but some could welcome this as an opportunity to purse a new dream or challenge, that would not require exerting themselves much.

Money will rarely be an issue. Just make your offer in a way that demonstrates benefits they want.

2. Successful – But Internet “Unfriendly” – Persons with a Story to Tell, or Something to Teach

This group typically use the net “grudgingly”. Some successful business owners I know only use email, and argue that the rest of the web is a distraction. You won’t find them reading articles on websites – they have their copies of newspapers and magazines delivered to them!

I once read an article about the Mexican billionaire declared to be the world’s richest man. The article revealed that he travels by public transport, does not use a laptop and rarely uses the web.

Someone like this may be hard to reach or “sell to” – using his company’s e-mail for instance.

His attitude towards the web makes it likely that reaching out to him offline would be a smarter move.

People who fall into this group often express a preference for direct interaction via phone or in person.

Interestingly, if you win them over, they could later let you take work you do for them online. And if positive benefits accrue to them that could get you assigned additional paid projects!

Successful Online Service Providers Today Still Use Offline Marketing – That’s a Clue!

This strategy is not new. It’s just little used, because people let the lure of the web blind them to it.

Notably successful service providers, who market online, still market offline, and done so for years.

Burt Dubin and Jason Leisterin that order – are two examples I have carefully studied.

For over 25 years, Burt has delivered certain special reports to interested persons via post or snail mail. You have to give him a real address to send it to. No emails or PDF downloads. It comes to you in an envelope. If I recall correctly, Burt even pays the postage – including international destinations.

Update (11th June 2013): Oops. Got that last bit wrong. Burt requires you to send a self-addressed stamped envelope to him. And if you’re outside the USA, you have to include a dollar to cover the postage. Otherwise the report is still free.

Jason Leister sends his own special report (The Rainmaker letter) on paper to each subscriber. And he swears by the effectiveness of this strategy.

If this strategy did not work, Burt would not have continued doing it for over 2 decades either!

Final Words

So, now you know.

It of course goes without saying, that adopting this strategy will not dig a hole in your pocket.

Moving around to meet such potentially profitable buyers of your “service” will require expenses on just a few phone calls, and some transportation. The rewards to be had are certainly worth it.

You will have to decide how wide you spread your net. Burt and Jason decided on “how”, based on a good understanding of their target audience, and what reward ONE sale could bring to them.

Meet “high value” prospects using this method. Those you can propose big budget writing projects to.

Use the web to make initial contact with the rest. After initial contact, you may make offline contact.

You can establish valuable face-to-face contact with real people, who have money to spend this way.

All sorts of good things can come out of that, if you play your cards right.

What Do Quotable Quotes Have to Do With Your Writing Success?

Everyone knows how to use quotes. Some of us also come up with a few that others end up using.

But certain people are responsible for producing some very profound ones (e.g. Emerson, Edison, Socrates, Plato, Hemingway, and many other great minds).

And we all accept that they were truly inspired.

But do people credited with voicing such memorable quotes just come up with them at will? Or is there a process they undergo that leads them to uncover such deep truths?

I once heard a radio presenter use the following quote (credited to a famous American celebrity):

“Success is the result of good judgement. Good judgement is the result of experience. Experience is the result of bad judgement”.

This quote means failures we experience (as a result of bad judgements), actually teach us the lessons we need to learn, in order to make better judgements that will enable us succeed

Edison himself once said:

Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

Anyone who knows Edison’s story, will readily acknowledge that he uttered those words based on very personal experience.

Today, Many Are Unwilling to Acquire Necessary Experience to Achieve Success

Today however, it appears many people are unwilling to view failure as useful in any way. They look down on anyone who fails – or appears to be failing.

They even avoid failure (by refusing to take any risks), and will often hide all evidence of it when it does happen to them.

What’s more, fewer people are willing to invest time and effort to acquire real or practical experience in their chosen vocations or fields of expertise.

And yet, this is an essential requirement for becoming more capable of making good judgments – as is confirmed in the above quote.

So many people seem to be in a hurry to succeed.

They have no time or patience to learn or apprentice. They just want to jump in and get made INSTANTLY. If the opportunity comes up they’ll even cut corners. Such bad judgement eventually leads them to failure. But they refuse to learn, and so repeat the mistake, again and again.

Incidentally, this problem is quite widespread amongst many who engage in writing as a vocation online.

That’s why we have people who engage in spinning articles, stealing content, plagiarizing others and so on. They simply cannot convince themselves to do the required honest work to get the results they want.

Authentic Success Cannot Be Had By Cutting Corners

Thankfully, Google, other search engines, as well as discerning internet users increasingly ignore them.

Like the earlier mentioned radio presenter pointed out, many successful people we know actually started by recording a lot of failures, till they learnt enough to succeed.

It’s so easy to use quotes. But DOING what the quotes say is a totally different proposition.

Those we quote, often drew from their own experience based knowledge to utter such deeply inspiring and/or enlightening truths.

By following the same process of doing, we can also develop noteworthy expertise in our various fields of interest. And we’ll eventually begin to discover – and share – truths that others will want to put on marble as quotable quotes!

Final Words: Quotable Quotes Come from Paying the Price of “Experience”

It won’t matter how much – or for how long – a person engages in self-delusion. Without practical experience, s/he is unlikely to achieve sustainable and noteworthy success, in any vocation.

When we hear quotable quotes, they often readily make sense. Sometimes we even wonder why we never thought of them ourselves.

And that’s often why they become quotable!

Those who utter them have often been exposed to visual, physical, psychological or even emotional experiences that made them arrive at such powerful insights.

Just like Quotable Quotes, Authentic Writing Success will only come to people who pay the price of experience…by doing it right .

And that, is what “quotable quotes” and “writing success” have in common.

I’ll leave you with the following quote by Ernest Hemingway (taken from Maria Popova’s article on Brainpickings.org). It offers insights relevant to the theme of this article:

“There are some things which cannot be learned quickly and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things and because it takes a man’s life to know them, the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave.” – Ernest Hemingway

Just like Edison, Hemingway’s life story reveals that he made the above assertion based on deep personal experience.

The rest of us would be wise to emulate them.

F-Y-I: Google Confirms Hacker Attacks On This Website

I’ve periodically announced the fact that I believe that – this website (spontaneoudevelopment.com) – is a target of selectively orchestrated online attacks. Well, this past Wednesday 22nd May 2013, I got a detailed email from Google Web master Support confirming some of my suspicions.

Below is the detailed hacker email alert sent me by Google, and also the email I’ve since sent to my web host – in line with the advice given by Google.

I’ve also already commenced taking action to clean out the mentioned sites.

(Yesterday a power blackout lasting from about 8.30a.m till 10pm across Benin Republic meant I was unable to start earlier).

Hi

Google just gave me this heads up (see forwarded email below).

A few days back, I got an email that suggested efforts were being made to

sabotage my website. This confirms it.

See a blog post I put up about it:

http://spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets/fyi-orchestrated-sabotage-campaign-against-this-website/

Can you give me any ideas of how to proceed in resolving this problem.

Would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks in advance,

With kindest regards,

Tayo

PS: Sometimes I even get the feeling my emails are being intercepted and

blocked. But again, I can’t prove it. Maybe this has something to do with

it.

Sincerely, Google Search Quality Team

Here’s My Understanding Of The Discovery Made By Google About Attacks On My Websites

I’m sharing all this information to help others, who now, or in future, may have similar experiences. It always helps to read about what others faced, and measures they took to recover.

The malicious code discovered on my websites by Google, was found to be (selectively) redirecting people who visit my website to possible scam – or spam – websites.

So, when someone visits my website from Google, they may even get a virus or malicious code warning about my website. And this will make the intending visitor quickly leave! They never arrive at that page. But I won’t know its happening.

In the meantime, Google will exclude that page from their searches – and I will receive less visits, enquiries and subscribers. That’s been happening – but my consistent blogging has helped cushion the effects a little bit.

See how complicated this whole issue is – and it’s devastating effect on my ability to earn more income?

Additional Insights Into The Negative Impact Of This Hacker Attack

It’s with this Google confirmation that I’m now able to put 2 and 2 together, to make sense of the strange experiences I’ve been having.

Burt Dubin has – as usual – kindly written in, on learning of this new development. My thanks to him – and my friends/family – for all the moral support, as I tackle these different efforts to pull me down (and they are MANY I tell you – without exaggeration).

There’s a consistent odd/tell tale trend I’ve noticed in these attacks. And those I’ve pointed it out to agree with me, that it is a good sign that these attacks are being done (or sponsored) by people who know me, and who want to discredit me. They are not the usual random attacks.

For instance, specific pages and documents on my website (e.g. my PDF resume, learning event PDF flyers and other pages specifically used to showcase my products and services for sale) are selectively attacked – not the entire website!

They also attacked my popular articles (which I still have on HTML pages) that attract a lot of readers. Those pages used to come up in Google, now they don’t.

The obvious purpose is to prevent me from gaining enough credibility to convert more visitors into buyers (like I did with the Canadian Farm Project Manager priest – to their surprise I’m sure).

It’s even affected my efforts to gain marketing traction for my learning events and new products here in Benin Republic. I’ve had so many in-person meetings that started out looking promising.

Then we would part by exchanging cards, and the prospects would promise to visit my website as agreed, in readiness for a follow up meeting.

As you can imagine, a visit to the website that results in a virus warning or a scam offer will NOT inspire any confidence in a prospect to pursue furthr relations with the owner!

Now consider the REAL possibility that ALL those I’ve been sending my Guest Posts, English-French Guide CDROMs and Seminar proposals to have been having that experience?!!

Our Websites Need To Be Protected – And We Will Often Need All The Help We Can Get

I’m not giving details of the solution I’ve settled on.

But the trends I’ve noticed in these attacks strongly suggest implementing it will make a lasting world of difference. Where I’ve been using this planned solution, I’ve NEVER had this problem, so I intend to simply extend it to the rest of the website.

Sadly, all this has prevented me from building on my success from a few months back.

It took a lot of work to get that far. I’d continued work to build on it. But I found it so strange that everything just came to an almost complete halt.

Google has now helped show why this happened, with this email advice they sent me. I’m now working hard to clean up the entire website to (as they correctly put it) protect my visitors/users.

Most of what I’m trying to achieve in my business (online and off the web) depends on how my website presents me.

That’s where I put up most of my marketing material to support even my offline efforts. Today, people readily Google you, and check your website out to make up their minds.

Mine has helped me earn decent income (and achieve great marketing mileage/exposure) while spending VERY little – even from Nigerians who find it hard to trust themselves talk less of others.

They’ve sent me money from different parts of the country. I have CEOs in Lagos, Niger, Kano, Ibadan and other places who own businesses (e.g. farms, and other companies) that have bought my handbook and subscribe to my newsletter, and are now friends but we’ve never met!

Someone I’d never met before even sent N35,000 (approx. $230 USD) into my bank account, two full weeks before travelling from over 8 hours away in Akwa Ibom, to meet me in Lagos. It was on a Saturday, and I spent about 4 hours putting him through practical Feed Formulation at a feed mill in Oko Oba, late last year.

Why Would A Stranger Send Me Payment 2 weeks Ahead For An In-Person Training? It Was Simply Based On What He Read On My Website.

And That’s How Powerful Your Writing Can Be!

If you own a website, you probably depend on it to achieve similar goals.

That’s why when your website is not in a good state of health, your chances of making useful progress are limited.

So, this kind of attack is something we all need to protect ourselves against. And we will often need all the help we can get to do so successfully.

When focussing on the serious business of attracting clients for your services, it can be annoying to discover “hidden”
attacks like these diluting one’s efforts. This has been an on-going battle for close to 2 years now.

Everytime I
clean it out, they come right back. I’m determined to make this
the last.

I’m grateful for the support provided by Google via their Webmaster tools email alert, and for my web host (Hostgator)’s usual amazing support.

PS: Oh, by the way, I know the “bad guys” are on my newsletter mailing list, and also possibly tune in via RSS etc. So they’re always lurking, with malicious intent.

Well, Here Are Some FINAL WORDS for Those Haters to Chew On

A proverb in my language (Yoruba) says:

“Ota o le pa kadara mi da. Won kan le fa owo ago pada si ehin ni”

Literal translation: Enemies/haters/evil-doers cannot change my destiny. They can only pull the hands of the clock backwards”.

Contextual translation: “People who try to hurt/stop you can never succeed unless you let them. The best they can do is to slow you down. Eventually, if you don’t stop, YOU will wear THEM down.”

And of course, I hope you know that your “destiny” is what you make of it?

Yes it is!

Like Williams Jennings Bryan said

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, but of choice. Not something to wish for, but to attain.”

Sigh. If these guys knew where I draw my inspiration from, they would have quit long ago. But becasue they are so DAFT, they persist in wasting their time.

How do you stop a guy who simply does not understand how to give up?

Your best bet is: Shoot him…and make sure you don’t miss!

The problem you will have is MY creator will not let ANYONE succeed in doing that to me.

Evil can never triumph over GOOD. Falsehood can never defeat TRUTH. Period.

So “haters”, if you can find better things to do with your time, I’d really advise you do SO NOW. You will NOT win this war. I’m in this to the end – and by then I’ll be the last one standing. Believe it.

When YOU Love Writing Enough, It Will Reveal All Its Secrets To YOU!

Has anyone ever told you that YOU were born a writer? If no, then I just did. And I assure you that it is true.If you have never thought about yourself this way, that’s probaby just because, the conditioning you’ve received from society has made you forget. This article explains how re-discovering and embracing this inborn ability will help you uncover secrets you need to excel at writing.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said:

“The power that is in you is new in nature. And none but you know what that is that you can do. Nor do you know until you try.”

I’m Living Proof That It Is True

Once you have the ability to read, hear, think and reason, you can be a writer. It’s that simple. If you could ask any of those who knew me as a child or during my days in school, the last thing anyone imagined me doing was writing – the way I do today, for myself, and for clients .

I’ve since seen others who never showed any aptitude for – or interest in – writing, suddenly venture into it, and get hooked. That’s why we have medical doctors, musicians, fashion designers, photographers, scientists, and people in many unlikely fields who write. And they often do so seriously too – many getting well paid in the process as well.

But Why Should You Believe Me?

Well, you see I’ve used my writing to achieve all kinds of (what I used to think were impossible) goals – including getting people to part with money for different things I sell (e.g. custom Excel-Visual Basic Driven software, for feed formulation, payslip generation etc); print and eBooks, usage rights to articles, consultations etc).

Considering my part of the world from which I’ve done it, I believe this achievement becomes even more significant.

What’s more, I’ve continued all this, despite relentless sponsored efforts to sabotage my work online.

A few years ago, my name was not known in certain circles. In my own country, many who knew me did not take my writing seriously.

But today, relentless use of my writing to boost name recognition and marketing reach has gotten me massive positive benefits.

And it cost me nothing more than the effort and time spent writing the relevant pieces.

And I’ll do more with time – the efforts of any detractors notwithstanding.

I Say The Above Not to Massage My Ego, But to Show You Can Do the Same

Just like me, you can (and probably already) do something similar – or better (like 19 year old Bamidele Onibalusi, who I love to brag about all the time). The problem, for some people, may however be that they do not yet believe they were born to write.

So, I’m going to say it again: You were born to write. Everybody was born with the innate instinct – and capacity – to write!

However, not everyone keys in to that realization early on in life. Some of us take a while to discover and take ownership of that inborn ability. Others may never, possibly because their interests and vocations (sometimes their fears!) won’t let them go in that direction.

When You Love Writing Enough, It Will Reveal All Its Secrets To You

I coined the above phrase from a quote used by Burt Dubin (which he credited to an author I cannot recall) during an interview.

The original quote went thus:

“When you love something enough, it reveals all its secrets to you.”

Burt Dubin is a renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid professional speakers. So he commands the attention of listeners when he speaks on the subject of achievement.

He also shared some useful information about Leonardo Da Vinci, as written by a biographer (in the encyclopedia Britannica):

“From his earliest days, he flung himself upon his studies with an unprecedented ardor of delight and curiosity.”

Based on the above Burt rightly advocates immersing yourself in your vocation, with the ardor of a lover, if you want to excel at it.

He noted that that was how Da Vinci developed the concept of submarines, aircraft and more, “hundreds of years before they were invented”.

Burt further noted that that was how he (i.e. Burt) developed his unique grasp of the speaking business.

It goes without saying, therefore, that that IS what YOU need to do as well, if you want to excel at writing – or indeed any other vocation that catches your fancy..

Like I said when I started this piece, you were born to write. Therefore, to paraphrase Mr. Dubin, “Surrender to Your Purpose”!

The results won’t appear overnight. But as you continue, you’ll gradually begin delivering amazing writing output. And those who read your work will confirm it.

Good luck!

A Useful Story to Remember Whenever Things Go Wrong

Setbacks are bound to happen. Whenever you experience one in your writing business or any other area of your life,  maintain a positive mindset. Things will eventually get better. In fact, sometimes things turn out better than before, as a result of that “seeming” setback or “bad luck”!

The story you’re about to read illustrates this perfectly. You may therefore find it useful to recall or reread it to boost your morale anytime you’re down.

I’ve heard a similar story before, but this version recently narrated to me by Moumouni Toure (a Beninese friend here in Calavi), distills the lesson about what we term “good” and “bad” luck much better. Read it, and you’ll agree with me :-)

A King Discovers The True Meaning of Luck

What is luck? And when is it right to call it “good” or “bad”? Or how is “good luck” different from “bad luck”? At what point does one become the other? This interesting story basically shows that luck is what we make of it. There is really no good luck or bad luck. Read on to understand.

There was once a King who had a trusted servant/body guard who served him diligently and faithfully.

The servant held very strong beliefs about God, and especially adversity. He always gave gratitude to God whenever anything good happened. And when something bad happened, he would say “It’s God’s will. There is a purpose for it, though we may not know it now”.

The King Loses a Finger…Due to Bad Luck?

One day the king went hunting with the servant. At a point he was attacked by a group of wild animals. The servant valiantly fought off the animals and managed to save the king – who however lost a finger.

With the animals chased off, the king looked at his missing finger in horror. To his extreme annoyance however, the servant (predictably) said “It’s God’s will. There is a purpose for it, though we may not know it now”.

Thoroughly vexed, the injured king had the servant locked up in prison as soon as they got back to the palace. He simply could not see how any good could come from his loss of a finger!

The King’s Missing Finger Saves His Life

Some months later, the king went hunting again, but this time alone.

Unfortunately, he got captured by a group of savages who were looking for a human being to sacrifice to their gods. He was taken to their king, who asked them to prepare him for the ceremony.

But when the medicine man examined him to be sure he was free from any defects (a requirement for the sacrifice to be accepted by the gods), they discovered he was missing a finger.

When the king of the cannibals heard this, he ordered the immediate release of the nine-fingered prisoner. His continued presence threatened to nullify all the preparations to appease the gods!

Greatly relieved at being set free, the king hurried home, thinking how right his servant had been.

He Frees The Servant – And Learns An Even Greater Lesson About (Seeming) Bad Luck!

Getting back home, the relieved king promptly ordered the release of his servant from prison.

The latter arrived and immediately asked why the king had freed him. The king explained how his missing finger had prevented him from being used as a sacrifice, noting that the servant had been right all along.

He had indeed lost that finger for a good purpose that he could not see at the time!

At this point the king proceeded to apologise to the servant for sending him to jail.

But the servant quickly stopped him, pointing out that had he not been in prison, he (the servant) would have accompanied the king on the hunt. And the savages would have found him perfect for the sacrifice i.e. he would have been killed!

In other words he noted, getting put in jail had turned out to be a run of good luck disguised as bad luck!

Final Words: When Bad Things Happen, It May Be for Our Own Good

You may have heard of the concept of the glass cup filled to the middle, which an optimist would call “half-filled” and a pessimist “half-empty”.

How we think when things go wrong in our lives can influence how far we progress towards our goal. When you lose a client, miss a deadline or make a major mistake in a write-up you submit, don’t beat yourself up so bad that other things you need to do suffer.

Some good may still come of it. You can even create that benefit yourself. For instance, to prevent a future occurrence of such mistakes , you could decide to develop ruthless focus in doing your work in future. As a result, your work quality may go through the roof. And your fees would follow suit!

I’ve never been one to rationalize my failures. However, my study of the Science of Getting Rich eBook  tells me I may not get something I want when I try, not because I’m incompetent, but because I’m not ready for it.

There are forces working on our behalf, to prepare us for every stage of advancement in life. When they keep us from going in a direction we want, at a particular point in time, it can be painful or frustrating.

However, later on, the benefit of hindsight could make it apparent, that we are better off.

Remembering this can help us deal more successfully with inevitable ups and downs we experience in life. We will understand that it will often be to a useful end.

I’ll end with the following words of wisdom from Jim Rohn:

Smile at adversity and act quickly to eliminate it. Expect adversity for it shall surely appear. Be grateful for adversity for it forces the human spirit to grow – for surely the human character is formed not in the absence of difficulty, but in our response to difficulty. All things, even adversity, have their worthy purpose.

Earlier LinkedIn.com locked my account accusing me of “suspicious activity”.

This has been a serious running battle for me for a while.

A group of people are orchestrating these attacks to stop the obvious growth of my website traffic, and my profile.

These are mostly sponsored attacks. And it’s difficult to trace them

See (below) the links to articles I’ve had to publish on my website each time I’ve been punished for what I did not do as above.

Below the links is a message I included in an application I just submitted to a network. It gives details.

I need to say this.

I’m having a running battle getting some bad guys off my back with regard to my website and blog. It’s costing me access to income earning and reputation building networks.

If you accept me into this forum PLEASE know that I do NOT do any kind of spamming, scamming or illegal stuff online.

LinkedIn.com and now constant-content.com (where I used to earn income as a writer) have recently locked me out of their websites.

I still do not know why – but LinkedIn replied to say they noticed “suspicious activity” in my account.

Just this evening I got a fake lottery email I apparently sent to myself from my domain based email (tayo at spontaneousdevelopment.com)!

Then it began to make sense!!

Basically they use my emaill address in place of the name for the sender.

Except for Internet savvy recipients, who think to check the email BEHIND the sender name (which they used my email to replace) most people will conclude the scam message came from my email, click to label it spam – and my website gets whacked by Google and co.

The problem is I don’t know how to stop them from sending those messages out to others – who will naturally think it’s me.

I’m saying all this here UPFRONT to help you decide if you’re comfortable having me on. There are orchestrated attempts being made to destroy my work online.

This is not the first time. I remain focussed on my goals.

And it’s even one of the reasons I relocated from Nigeria to Benin Republic.

Each time this problem has cost me tangibly (E.g. linkedIn and constant-content) I’ve written a blog post about it.

It’s the only form of defense I can think of. If after reading ALL this you’re OK with having me around, I’ll be glad to be a useful contributor to your forum – as (name of ebook) is one reason why I’m still alive and kicking despite the concerted efforts of people who want to pull me down.

Sorry about the epistle.

How to Unmask & Defeat Blood-Sucking Vampires!

How to Produce Your Best Writing, Even When Upset (3 Steps)

Everyone gets upset. A quarrel with your spouse, a friend or even your teenage kid could be the cause. Sometimes it could be a mistake you made, that causes you to be angry with yourself. Maybe it cost you money you had plans for. The loss of a valuable client can also get you upset – for obvious reasons.

Except you belong to the tiny minority with exceptional self-management abilities, your state of mind can affect your performance of tasks – regardless of how competent you already are.

How You Handle Yourself AFTER You’ve Been Upset Is Important

Getting upset is inevitable. But if you do a bad job of managing yourself, more things could go wrong, and you’d get even more upset. And then even more bad things would happen. You get the message I’m sure.

The truth is that we all know this. It’s simple common sense. But it can be difficult to remember in real life.

You may have scheduled writings tasks you need to get done – for yourself, or possibly your boss or a client. If you’re someone who lets things that happen in one area of your life spill over into other areas, your writing will be prone to suffer – a lot.

And if you’re unlucky to be around rivals, or mischievous others who know that you’re vulnerable in that manner; they could deliberately upset you to give themselves an unfair advantage over you.

That’s why it can be useful to know useful steps you can follow to RECOVER if/when you get upset.

I Suggest 3 Steps You Can Adopt When The Need Arises

We all write at different rates, but to ensure we deliver quality writing output as and when required, it’s often best to leave enough time to proof-read and tweak our original draft, until it’s just right.

When you’re upset, you’re likely to need more time to do the above properly. The following steps can help you:

Step 1: Get Away (and/or Lock Yourself In) Till You Calm Down

It does not matter who or what upset you…or how. Once you identify you’re upset, and do not feel sticking around will make it easy to calm down, find a place to be alone.

You can plan to speak with that person later, if it’s something you need to resolve.

But right then when you’re both still upset, it’s best to go away and calm down.

If however you have a level of self-mastery that enables you consciously calm yourself down without going away, do so, and move to step 2 below.

Step 2: Blank Your Mind and Focus ONLY On Your Writing Goal

Forget everything that’s happened. Stop thinking about anyone who was directly or indirectly responsible.

Focus your mind exclusively on your goal of getting started with your writing.

Concentrate hard.

If you do this right, you should – within 1 to 2 minutes – find that you’ve freed your mind.

If it takes you longer those 3 minutes, I would say you’re not doing it right. I mean that: 3 minutes is actually a LONG period of time when you spend it doing focused thinking.

Try it and you’ll see I’m right. No matter what it is that’s upset you, it is important that you are willing to let go of it (if only temporarily) to get this step right.

Once you do that, you’ll be able to free your mind in 2 to 3 minutes tops.

Step 3: Start Writing No Matter How Unprepared You Feel

Once you’ve succeeded with step 2 above, this final step will be easy.

Anytime you don’t feel like writing; when nothing feels like it’s up there for you to write down – just get yourself seated behind your computer.

Crack your knuckles if you think that will help :-)

But just get behind the keyboard, and start typing.

Again, I mean that seriously.

You may not realize it, but your mind can rapidly regurgitate useful records it keeps of subconscious knowledge you pick up from your daily activities. All you have to do it ask (or search) it.

When you follow this procedure, and keep at it for up to 60 seconds, I assure you that ideas will start popping into your head.

Soon, everything else will recede into the background and you’ll start writing.

NB: I say the above on the assumption that you will be writing on a subject that you are already familiar with, and/or have done adequate research on previously. If that is not the case, simply apply the same principle to doing the needed research. You’ll be surprised how well you’ll fare.

The Un-initiated May Not Believe How Well This Works Until They’ve Tried It

I know this works because I’ve used it successfully countless times, to get my writing done – during periods when I’ve been seriously upset (to my pleasant surprise as you can imagine).

The best part is that you actually end up with a finished piece that’s unique and original.

Try this method and you’ll see how well it works. Your writing will never be the same again!

Deliver to Deadlines, Even After a Setback, Using This Smartphone Based Productivity Hack for Writers

Imagine you have a write-up that needs to go online before a deadline expires, but your trusted Internet connection suddenly disappoints. Plus there’s no place you can go to use another. What do you do when that happens (other than running out in your underpants to bang on your neighbour’s door)?

This article describes a tried and tested solution you can adopt. It assumes you own a smartphone, with bluetooth functionality, and internet connectivity enabled. If you don’t, I strongly suggest you get one, to be at your productive best as a writer.

Like I explained in a previous post, apart from helping me write smarter and faster, my smartphone has saved my butt too many times to count. The true story I share below describes one such instance.

My Internet Connection Fails – Hours to a Midnight Deadline!

Since 1st November 2012, I’ve published a new post from Monday to Saturday, on 6 different topics according to my blog schedule – sometimes on Sundays too. And I have a strict rule I try to follow, of publishing each one before midnight – no matter how busy I get.

That night I did not expect anything could go wrong (which proves how naïve I was!). So I took my time tweaking the write-up. Then at 10.30p.m I logged on to the web from my laptop, to publish the article to my blog.

But it was not to be!

Thirty minutes later, I’d rebooted my laptop twice – thinking the problem was from my end. But I could not even load a Google search page. It was that bad. When I finally called the ISP, they explained they were having problems. The young man said “it could take a few hours”.

It was already past 11.30pm, so I knew I needed an alternative. I thought…fast and hard. “There has to be another way” I told myself.

NB: The series of events described below, happened at a fast pace – mostly within seconds.

I Try Using My Smartphone’s Data Cable – But Something Goes Wrong…AGAIN!

I’ve often used my Blackberry’s data cable to transfer new article content (or files) from my laptop to the smartphone, from where I’ve published posts, sent files as email attachments etc.

At a point I remembered I could do that. Heaving a sigh of relief, I took out my data cable, and connected the USB end to the laptop. But when I plugged the other end into the phone’s charging port, the unthinkable happened: the port broke and came loose! I was horrified.

“What on earth is going on here tonight?” I thought to myself.

More Hard Thinking Leads Me to Explore Using Bluetooth Technology

Checking the time on the laptop status bar, it was 11.45 pm. Time was running out. I did more hard thinking.

Suddenly, it occurred to me that I could use Bluetooth. A quick look at the time showed it was 11.47p.m. Two more minutes had passed. They felt like eons.

Here’s a point worth noting:

My latptop was a not-so-new Toshiba Satellite that did not have an in-built Bluetooth facilitiy. But a month earlier, I’d done an online search on how to use Bluetooth on a laptop that did not come pre-installed with it. Results returned showed that a USB driven adaptor could be purchased. I found one for less than $5 USD.

That proactive investment paid off on this trouble-filled night, because the Bluetooth adaptor made it possible to get my smartphone to communicate with the laptop. Without it, this following alternative line of action would have been impossible to pursue :-)

10 Steps That Got My Write-Up Online Less Than 2 Minutes Before my Self-Impossed Blog Update Deadline

The steps described below are based on what I did using my Blackberry smartphone. Before this time, I had only ever sent files from my phone to my laptop using Bluetooth – never the other way round. However, each time I did so, I’d often noticed a second option to “Receive using Bluetooth” on the phone.

That night, I made use of that second option for the first time. Thankfully, it worked without a hitch.

Most Blackberry phones have similar interfaces – so if you own one, you should be able to duplicate these steps. Other smart phones also have Bluetooth and internet capabilities. If you don’t already know how, spend a little time learning to enable yours communicate with your PC via Bluetooth. It could be well worth the effort.

NB: As you can imagine, the screenshots provided below are NOT for the post I published that night. I’ve produced these simply for illustration.

1. I plugged in the Bluetooth adaptor to a USB port on the laptop.

2. The article was already formatted, so I simply switched to HTML code view, copied the contents into a Notepad file, and saved it to my desktop.

3. On the smartphone I turned on Bluetooth. Next, on the home screen of the smartphone, I selected Media. Then I pressed the Blackberry menu button again, to bring up the Media short cut menu. Scrolling down, I clicked “Receive using Bluetooth”.

A prompt was displayed indicating that the phone was waiting for the transfer from the PC. Note here that in my case they were paired, since I’d been using the bluetooth feature

NB: If doing this for the first time, navigate to “Manage Connections”, turn on Bluetooth, then click “Setup Bluetooth”and follow prompts that appear.

Conclusion: Treat Deadlines With Serious Respect – Develop Smart Alternatives To Get Client Projects Done!

Clients don’t appreciate excuses. They expect us to be equipped to deliver optimally at all times (e.g. meet deadlines as agreed). We must therefore actively explore alternative ways to get our work done, in spite of setbacks we may encounter. No stories.

I’m not the only one who thinks this is important: A valuable exhange of insights between Sue Campbell and Devon Ellington, in the comments section of her “How to Get Editors to Break Their Own Rules – and Be Glad They Did” post, highlights a need for writers to deliver on promises they make to meet client specifications and deadlines.

This blog post has described a real life experience I had, in which my Smartphone enabled me overcome a major setback, to meet what was a personal (but could have been a client project) deadline.

Knowing smart alternatives (time and effort saving tips, tricks and/or hacks) for getting your work done, will boost your productivity many times over. That would help you keep your credibility intact before clients, even when things go badly wrong.

What about you? Do you have any personal experience to share on this subject? Are there some other points you feel can be added, to help persons looking for answers? Please share your thoughts!

Why Being “Dis-organized” Can Make You a Better Writer

The above title is not a play on words. This article highlights an often missed truth that determines how productive we can be each day.

Creative types (writers, developers etc), often go through psychological peaks and troughs, that affect their output.

There are those times when you find yourself in the zone, and relentlessly churn out awesome content, to the delight of your readers – and possibly clients. But there are also times when you feel “empty” of ideas.

Suddenly, you’re unable to get anything useful written, and you don’t know why!

Most Writers Can Relate To The Above Scenario. Some Call It “Writer’s Block”.

Maybe it is. But from years of writing, and studying what many successful writers say about writing, I have come to the firm conclusion that you can immunize yourself against that notorious affliction.

It however takes great mental stamina, and self-discipline, to overcome that problem. And if you do, you’ll ultimately arrive at a point where you can achieve consistent output.

There are so many factors that can negatively affect your ability to write productively at any point in time. Fundamental is your interest in, and passion for the subject. You will also commit to doing intelligent research to cover any gaps in your knowledge.

Having said that, even after all that is in place, many writers still get periodically stuck, unable to finish what they start writing.

One possible cause is the way they plan their writing.

The most successful writers carefully study the conditions that help them achieve the best writing output at any time. Then they work hard to replicate it those conditions as often as possible.

Over time they develop a tried and tested system for creating those ideas conditions literally at will. Most of this is really a mental process.

However, at a point certain physical activities can greatly impact – negatively too – on a creative person’s ability to get the needed work done as and when required.

The Following Narrative (Based On a True Story) Illustrates the Above Point

I once read about a teenage girl who got a standing ovation after playing the violin before a sold out concert audience.

When asked afterwards about how she managed to develop such great prowess in playing the instrument, she replied that her success secret was “Planned Neglect”.

According to her, when she first started learning to play the violin, she tried to please her parents by doing her chores BEFORE retiring to practice. After a while however, she noticed that each time she did this, she often got tired too early to practice as well as she knew was necessary.

So, she decided to do it the other way around i.e. practicing first, and only doing her chores or any other tasks AFTER she was satisfied with her practice efforts. She became a child prodigy in the process!

There’s more.

Documented accounts have it that geniuses like Edison and other great minds often worked in rooms that looked disorganized, and which they rarely let anyone “organize” for them.

Yet they were reportedly able to find anything they needed, by themselves, in those same chaotic environments.

For them, the priority was their work. The business of neatly arranging their social spaces came in second place.

Guess what? The world was better off for it!

Is It Possible Your Writing Suffers Because You’re TOO ORGANIZED?

Most writers determine where, when and how they work.

Their clients trust them to make the best use of their time to get the writing project done to the right standard, and on time.

As a writer, are you too organized to be productive? Do you, for instance, obsess over house keeping? Do you always want to make sure everything is in its place before you can settle down to write? There’s nothing wrong with that. As long as you’re sure it will not wear you out before you can get some decent work done, keep doing it.

If, on the other hand, it’s making you less productive than you’re capable of being, consider adopting the “planned neglect” strategy described in this article.

You could, for instance, hire someone to do those tasks for you (if you can afford it), so you can save physical and mental energy to focus on achieving your primary goal.

Remember: If you fail to turn in your written works to specification, and ahead of agreed deadlines, the client is unlikely to call on you in future.

2 Lessons on Writing…from Tom & Jerry Cartoons!

Yeah, I know. What on earth can Tom and Jerry cartoons teach anyone about writing? But that’s the irony of life. I don’t know about you, but simple, yet powerful insights used to elude me a lot in the past. As a result I often ended up dwelling on needlessly complex alternatives. This cartoon series helped me overcome that limitation, making me more productive. These 2 lessons make simple common sense. And they’ve gotten me hired by clients to develop Web Marketing Systems based on Article Marketing for them. I share them below, in the hope that you may also find use for them:

1. Keep It Simple for Your Audience to Follow

Tom and Jerry do not speak – most times, except when they have to scream in pain or hoot in laugher. Yet, everyone who watches them leaves with a clear understanding of what transpired in each episode.

In my opinion, that’s non verbal (and non-written) communication at its very best.

To achieve the above outcome, the script writers and producers employ easy to follow plots that the average member of their target audience can relate to. And that includes children. For instance, we all laugh at the same scenes while watching – both adults and kids.

As writers, we are told to keep our target audience in mind. On the web, there is the generally accepted rule that you need to write in a way that someone in the 6th grade can understand.

It’s simple common sense. Yet sometimes we forget. Or decide to ignore that rule.

Consider the possibility that one of your readers could have a BIG purse, but relatively poor comprehension of English. If s/he’s looking to hire a writer, what happens if s/he cannot understand what you write?

Simple answer: You most likely will not get hired – at least not by him (or her).

Today, many business owners from non-English speaking countries seek increasing access to buyers in English speaking markets. Some actively hire English competent writers and marketing professionals to handle their web marketing content for their manufactured products and/or services.

But they often seek writers who use English in a way that they can understand.

That convinces them that people with limited grasp of English – like them – would not be alienated by the content you create. No client will hire (or retain) a writer who produces content that potential buyers struggle to comprehend.

Hopefully you see what I mean here.

2. Relentlessly Deliver Useful Value – Mixed With Entertainment – to Readers

I could be wrong, but I believe Tom and Jerry cartoons have been around since before I was born. I’ll be 43 in July. So that’s a fairly long time. Yet there is rarely a time – even now – that I watch an episode from that cartoon series that I do not laugh or at least smile.

And I know I’m not alone. Forgive me being so cheekily presumptuous :-)

Each time these guys make us do that (i.e. laugh), they succeed in their objective of delivering entertainment, in exchange for our money. Amazing how well they’ve perfected that art, isn’t it?

For decades on end, generations of people across the world have continued to watch these two cartoon characters without losing interest. That’s because they fulfill their promise to meet our expectations of being entertained. Period.

When we write, it’s important to set out to add value by doing one or more of the following: informing, educating, inspiring or entertaining and so on.

We must never forget to think of the reader. Answering the “What’s In It for Me” question to meet the needs of our readers’ is the best way to succeed.

The more often we achieve our goal of adding value as outlined above, the better we succeed in our writing. Writing in this manner does not often produce instant results, but it eventually does produce useful, financially rewarding results.

Here’s a point worth noting: Quite often many writers focus too much on the “getting hired to write” kind of benefit.

My experiences have howver taught me that so many other channels of rewards exist that you can look forward to exploiting. Indeed some will lead to a chain of beneficial events happening to and for you.

To give a personal example, I have – in the past – won projects with clients by referring them to a piece of writing I produced.

In one case, a client mentioned a problem they faced in passing. Recalling that I had once written an article (with videos and screenshots) of how to solve that problem, I simply e-mailed the CEO a link to it.

More often than not, they would succeed in using the information in my article to solve the problem (sometimes they could call me to clarify aspects). Weeks later, I used the example of that solution they got from reading my article, to convince the CEO to hire me. The project was to develop and implement a Web Marketing System (with an Article Marketing component) for their already existing website.

Final Words: Build Up Readers’ Anticipation for the Future

In addition to other performance indicators which I discussed in seperate posts on this theme, evidence of success will be increased volume/quality of website traffic.

For instance, before I left Nigeria on April 1, 2013,, I was getting 450 to 1,300 visits per day on this blog. Today (less than 4 weeks later) I get 900 to over 1,800 visits per day. Not just that, the rate of subscription to my newsletter has jumped.

Here’s one of the main reasons: Ready access to electricity here in Benin republic has helped me improve the quality of my writing. I am able to spend more time thinking up and creating quality content. The feedback from visitors to my website reflects that fact.

Now, by achieving 1 and 2 above, what Tom and Jerry end up doing in the long run is to build anticipation and interest in viewers minds, to watch more. That’s why both adults and children are often ready to purchase new releases of the cartoon series.

Using lessons 1 and 2 above, avoid focussing on writing in a way that makes YOU look good. Instead devote your energy to producing write-ups make them better equipped to do what they want to do better.

In the process, you WILL look good to them. And that will make them decide to return to read more of what you write.Over time, they will tell others about you, and send feedback to you by way of emails, sometimes comments etc. At some point some who need help writing content for their own businesses, may decide to contact you. And suddenly, you would have come full circle.

Your goal of getting hired would have been achieved. But you would also have gotten there by being useful to others, thereby gaining powerful marketing traction for yourself.

The long term benefits of that will be tremendous, and definitely worth the effort.
