[Now Available!] KUKURU DANGER™: 5 True Stories About the Adventures – & Misadventures! – of a School Age Child Trying to Find Purpose in Life.

In this unusual book, Tayo Solagbade narrates 5 true stories about a dizzying variety of (sometimes shocking) escapades he engaged in – while schooling – that repeatedly landed him in trouble, causing his parents avoidable heart breaks.

In the first story, Tayo suffers the embarrassment of having a female classmate falsely accuse him – to their class teacher – of peeping at her in the girls’ room!

He would however shake off the potentially traumatizing experience, to earn a double promotion into enter secondary school one year ahead of his class, in 1980.

At the age of 10, in his first year in secondary school, Kukuru Danger™ (Tayo’s alter ego) joins a notorious group of students, in a bid to escape frequent bullying from bigger and older classmates.

Over the course of the year, they routinely sneak out of school to eat meals at Mai Shai shops without paying, steal coins from trader’s slot machines, and catch crabs at the Lagoon front!

At a point, Kukuru™ begins stealing money from home, to play the slots. But he soon gets caught.

By the school year’s end his mother is shocked to read the principal’s comments at the bottom of his report card, saying “To repeat for cheating”.

The idea I reveal in this new PDF report is the solution to poverty and unemployment anywhere.

“Bleaching” Your Skin Insults Your Creator, and Makes You Lose Dignity (Message from Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Lupita Nyong’o to Black/African Parents & their Children)

One of Fela’s most popular songs when I was a child was :”Yellow Fever” – released when I was 6 years old, in 1976. I LOVED that song. Still do too(see Youtube video below)! He was basically challenging skin-bleaching black men and women, who wanted to become “white” by force, out of an inferiority complex, to change their ways.

Apart from his fierce defence of human rights, as being each person’s “personal property’ and therefore NOT to be “given” to us by others, Fela also launched “lyrical” attacks on corrupt governments/individuals.

And of course he constantly challenged the individual African to treat him/herself with respect.

I named my first child “OLUFELA” in 1999, in honour of Fela! Just like his daughter said in this pictured poster, he was – and remains – a major influence on my thinking about how to be a PROUD AFRICAN.

Sadly, many hypocritical parents/adults focused on his weed smoking as a convenient excuse to ignore his wise – and prophetic – counsel.

Most of Fela’s songs, always carried clear and powerful messages to either the common people, or the government of the day, or “colonial” powers.

As an adult African, and parent, today, one of the things that bothers me the most is the apparent self-hate that Africans/black skinned people seem to have for their skin colour…and hair.

Today, I travel around quite a bit, and I see that the problem is worse. Women especially, African WOMEN in particular, continue with this sickening habit.

I look around me and it appears every time I see 5 normal skinned black persons, at least ONE rainbow coloured skinned woman passes by as well!

In Lagos-Nigeria and Cotonou-Benin Republic, where I currently do most of my traveling, this skin “bleaching” trend is like some kind of competition!

And all sorts of crazy skin creams are arriving the markets, to feed this madness!

The sad thing is that they NEVER end up better off…as Fela points out in his lyrics.

He starts by explaining that there are 2 kinds of Yellow “Fever” – the Original one (i.e. the actual sickness) and the artificial (skin bleaching from black to lighter tone in an effort to look white)

Add to that the thirst by the same women to wear imported long straight hair, that the God they claim to BELIEVE in, never thought it wise to give them at birth, and you discover a pandemic of unimaginable proportions!

This need to avoid a loss of identity, as an African, is one of the reasons I have vowed to coach my own kids to be comfortable with who they are, and what they look like.

That is, to have what sane human beings know as SELF-ESTEEM.

It is why I’m publishing my new book titled “Kukuru Danger™ about my own childhood search for self-discovery and purpose.

I too suffered a need to belong, and to be accepted, right from my early years and even in my later adult years. But by listening to Fela’s lyrics, and also reading books about self-development, I learnt to believe in myself, and never feel inferior to any other human being.

Today, that mental attitude serves me well in my dealings with people – regardless of who they are, how important they are (or think they are) or where they come from – even if from MARS!

More Africans need to realize that the world appreciates them for being the way they are, MORE than it will ever appreciate them for trying to be what they are inherently NOT.

And if we ever needed proof of the above stated fact, well Lupita Nyong’o’s example perfectly fits the bill. And luckily for us, she herself shared a familiar story that proves she knows what others with her skin complexion pass through.

But she arrived on the world stage and discovered it was willing to accept her, if she accepted herself.

Today, she is celebrated by virtually everyone who is anyone in her industry…yet her complexion remains the same, and so does the hair on her head!

How I wish African women and their men (some tell me their women look “more beautiful” after bleaching!) will wake and rediscover the pride and essence of being who they are.

Some try to make it sound less nasty by calling it skin toning, and they refer to those with money (e.g female black celebrities) who “successfully changed” skin colours as justification for doing it too.

How lame! Goes right back to the lack of identity and self-esteem I started this article with.

Look, white skinned people get sun tanned skins by spending time in the sun, or using sun tan lotions. But the effects are never permanent. If they stop, their skin changes back to it’s natural white. But a black skinned person cannot get a white “tan”, you see. That’s why when a black skinned person goes “yellow” or “white”, s/he never changes back. Now, you can say it’s “toning”, if you like, but THAT, is what I call SKIN BLEACHING (to borrow Fela’s very apt terminology).” – Tayo K. Solagbade

By the way, last time I checked Oprah Winfrey remains globally acknowldged and respected, and I have NOT see her undergo any noticeable skin colour changes.

Should Oprah not be the role model we should all try to emulate in that (and other) respects???

The truth is that the world will be a much better place for us to live in, when we start respecting ourselves.

Only then will others really take us seriously and respect us as well. But if we keep acting as if we’re inferior (and we have NEVER been), then those who relate with us and who see that, will naturally treat us that way.

The choice is yours. What will you do? And what will you TEACH your child to do???

I know what I already do, and I have begun teaching my kids to do it as well. In my family/clan will always be black and proud sons and daughters of Africa!

Lupita ended her wonderful acceptance speech on black beauty with the following words…

“And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.”

I now offer those same words, as a parting message, to my fellow black skinned African women and men who may be tempted to “bleach” their God-given complexions lighter, to feel better about themselves.

Don’t do it. You insult yourself, and your creator if you do. And it will never be worth it!

I Flopped Badly At The National Finals! (A True Story About How NOT To Prepare For/Deliver An Important Presentation) – with Photos

No. 145: A Few People Can Make Life NEEDLESSLY Miserable for Many, IF Not Called to Order (Case Study: My Experiences at the Nigeria-Benin Republic Seme Border)

[NB: This issue of my newsletter is a public service edition.] Last Saturday a.m (7th June 2014), I published a blog about my near 12 hour traffic jam ordeal coming from Seme border to Mile 2 the day before (i.e Friday).

What I did not mention was that before that, I’d had unpleasant money-related “disagreements” with BOTH Beninese and Nigerian officials in crossing the border posts.

I Share My Experiences Below, to Warn Intending Travellers About What to Expect….

For over a year, since 1st April 2013, when I relocated to Benin, I’d crossed the border paying N200 at the Benin end to have my passport stamped, and N100 at the Nigerian end.

Yet a few weeks ago – on Sunday 25th May 2014 to be specific – the Beninese official responsible for stamping passports out told me to pay N500!

Surprised, I asked why. He said “C’est comme ça!” When I insisted that I’d always paid N200, he flung my passport at me and bluntly told me if I wanted I could leave without stamping my passport.

He then proceed to pointedly ignore me as I called out to him to at least tell me why.

Another Nigerian I met there lashed out verbally at him as he collected his stamped passport, saying “God will take that money back from you!”

I walked over to 2 armed uniformed officers next to the post, who looked senior to him and complained. They laughed in my face and told me to do whatever the other man told me.

One of them said today, you pay N500, but tomorrow we may ask you to go through without paying anything.

When I told him it made no sense, he angrily asked to move away from their end.

I called a senior officer I knew worked at the Nigerian embassy (in Cotonou) on his mobile line to protest about the treatment I was getting.

He sympathised with me, saying “It’s a pity they are doing that. It’s not supposed to happen.”

At that point I realised I had no choice but to pay up. So I did, making my displeasure clear from the way I snatched my stamped passport from the Beninese officer when he was done.

Still fuming, I arrived at the Nigerian end, and promptly expressed outrage at what had happened to me. The officer there casually told me to go to the Commissaire, if I felt that aggrieved.

Then he held out his hand and said “N100”.

That was what I’d always paid

(NB: It is instructive to note, that I’ve been told by embassy personnel and a lawyer client/friend that we are NOT even supposed to pay anything to get our passports stamped!)

I told myself, at least things were still normal at our end. As for going to the Beninese Commissaire, I decided I did not have the time to spare, since I was running late.

On my return from Nigeria, I got my passport stamped without eventualities. And I paid the normal N100 at the Nigerian end, and N200 at the Benin end.

I told the officials at the Benin check in post about the conduct of their colleague on the day I left the country. The lady officer apologised soberly to me, and asked me to forget it.

So I put it behind me.

But today, the nonsense not only came back, but it also began MUCH earlier – and with extra!

It began even before I got to the passport check-out post…

This was right at the first check point. The Beninese police officer after checking and seeing my passport was in order, asked me for money. I smiling told him I had nothing to give him.

He looked me over, and pointed to my travel bag saying he wanted to see its contents. I opened it up, and he checked. Finding nothing, he indicated my backpack. Same thing. Nothing.

Then he took my “Small Notebook Speaker” box and asked for the receipt.

I laughed in his face and old him he knew quite well that I did not need to carry a receipt for such an item on me.

His countenance showed he did not like my smart ass attitude of having an answer for everything he’d said to me. You see, even as we spoke, I could see my fellow country men being “shaken down” by his colleagues.

And in most cases those ones readily parted with as much as N500, at the slightest request. Now, one would imagine that was either because they were not well informed of their rights, or their travel documents were not in order.

But I actually saw well dressed, well spoken and reasonably schooled people giving in to the “harassment”.

Basically, the mentality of many Nigerians is that they are too busy to let a demand for a few hundred nairas DELAY them.

And so, those intending to get money off them simply play on that mentality.

Hold them back for the flimsiest of reasons, and even when they know they are not at fault, they’ll give you more or less what you ask.

Back to my uniformed friend. After I told him I did not need to show a receipt for my speakers, he went further to say “Now you’ll also have to produce a receipt for the laptop in your backpack”.

Once again, I made a point of laughing. Then I asked him if he would have asked me for a laptop receipt if I’d bought it online using my debit card. He looked at me in annoyance – I sensed he did not even understand what I’d said, but he knew it was something he could not contest.

By this time I was losing my patience. I told him I was going to call a senior officer at the Nigerian Embassy, where I was well known to tell him what I was being subjected to at the border.

As I made to pull out my mobile phone from my pockets, he angrily pushed my hand away, and said “This is my post. You cannot make a phone call here.”

That was of course not true…

But this guy carried a rifle that looked well maintained, compared to those I’d seen with his counterparts in Nigeria. So, I had the feeling it worked quite well.

Since he was this crooked already, I realised desperation could make him resort to doing something crazy.

He said “Look, it’s the way you talk that determines how I feel about letting you go. “

Then he smiled…as if to defuse the tension between us. He knew I was not going to give in.

So I smiled back, and asked him what he wanted to do…:-))

Seconds later, he handed me the speaker and I tapped him on the shoulder saying “A la prochaine mon frère!” (See you another time my brother!).

Getting to the Beninese Passport Stamping Out Post…

The same funny character from few weeks back, who’d asked for N500, was there. And he took one look at my passport and said “N500”.

I was expecting no less.

Paying up, I walked down to the Nigerian immigration stamp out section.

As the uniformed immigration officer recorded my passport details, he asked “How are you Sir?”

Before I could stop myself, my frustration came to the surface, and I said “Actually, I’m not fine at all!”

He looked up in surprise at me and asked what the problem was. I told him what I’d gone through at the Benin end.

Then I asked him why they could not stop their French speaking colleagues from subjecting law abiding Nigerian travellers to such harassment daily.

He shook his head sympathetically, and said “If you feel that strongly about it, just go to their Commissaire over there (pointing to the left of where I stood), and make a formal report.

Then he said “N200”. I felt like someone poured a bucket of cold water on my head.

I said “N200? But I always pay N100 at this end…”

He replied simply by stretching out his hand and saying “N200”.

Sighing, I gave him the money. Then I made to walk out, only to be called by anther officer seated just before the exit. He had a large register opened in front of him, into which passport details were entered.

He took my passport and said “N200”.

This time I almost exploded. I said “What this N200 for again? I’ve never paid twice before, in over a year of stamping out at this end! Can you please explain to me why I have to pay again?”

As soon as I said this, he looked me over and said “Take. It’s okay. You can go.”

I said “Look. I don’t mind paying, but I just want to know what I am paying for, because it’s never happened before. Can’t you just let us know what to expect?

Is there not some standard we can work with?”

Now impatient, he replied “Look I said if you don’t want to pay, just go with your trouble. Haba!”

As he said this, I heard another man who just came in telling the officer I was earlier with “No. How can I pay N500 to stamp my passport? What for?

I’m coming all the way from Cote D’Ivoire. You don’t even know how much money I have on me. How can you just tell me to pay such an amount. I’ve never paid such before, and I am not going to pay it today!” he finished, fuming.

And so I left, and soon arrived at the motor park, where I joined a Taxi, which after getting 2 other passengers took off for Lagos around 5.00 p.m.

Why I Choose to Write About My Seme Border Experiences…

My purpose is simple. If what I continue to experience along with other travellers on both sides of the Nigeria-Benin border is in line with official procedures, announcing it here should bother no one.

However, I have also travelled across the Aflao border to Ghana, from Nigeria, just as I have crossed the Nigerian-Cameroon border in the past. At no time did I make ANY of my trips without valid papers. Yet, during my trips I never had an experience of that sort with ANYONE – uniformed or otherwise.

If what’s going on there is however NOT supposed to happen, my hope is that highlighting it like I’ve done here can bring it to the attention of those who can do something about it.

It’s possible writing about all this can get me some negative attention from those I talk about…and/or “others”…

The truth is however that I fear no one and nothing – except my Creator.

So, anyone who has a problem with my truth telling can take ANY action s/he pleases.

I am 100% certain that nothing the Creator has not consented to, can happen to me as I do his will.

Period.

It’s So Sad That Nigerians, and Some Africans Persist In Unedifying Acts

Interestingly, one of the Beninese officers in uniform at the border last year asked me if I was “Jesus Christ” when he tried to make me pay more than N200 to “stamp in”, and I asked why.

He said I was acting as if I did not know that it happened all over Africa!

Arm twisting others to get money, in what has become a vicious cycle, is more or less a way of life in Nigeria.

Some of Nigeria’s neighbours who are not disciplined, “catch the bug” from years of prolonged contact.

That appears to be what’s happening at Seme border. The Beninese guys there, in my opinion have learnt bad habits from their Nigerian counterparts. Contact with them can give a VERY wrong impression about what people in Benin Republic are really like. 

You see, I’ve lived in Benin Republic for over a year now. They are not perfect, but random daylight harassment and extortion does NOT happen in that country. I live AMONGST these people, and I find them VERY humane – a huge contrast to Nigerians!

In this regard, it might also interest you to know that the Beninese officials do NOT subject, Beninese citizens (their people) who cross the border to the treatment they give to Nigerians!

As you arrive at their post, if they are not sure of your nationality, they start by asking “Vous êtes Beninois?” Your response then determines how you are “treated”.

I’ve seen this many times. They apparently have taken a cue from the way our own officials extort money from us, before we get to them.

Plus, many Nigerians are often so ready to just “pay” when asked, without asking questions!

Apart from the needless daily abuse they subject people to, their actions also stifle trade and commerce…

And that’s having serious negative effects on regional economic development.

I’ll end by stating the obvious fact, that if leaders of both countries really want faster progress, they will take pains to eliminate the nonsense happening at the Seme border immediately!

Below is a photo I took yesterday (Thursday, 22nd May 2014) in a Cotonou restaurant, with a Cameroonian client (Arnaud Franklin Nana), who – like me – is based in Benin Republic.

We discussed business and also shared updates about our work etc – including stuff like this drama with my website…

I should point out that most of my authentic clients have similar relationships with me. We relate more like FRIENDS, than business associates. And that includes those I have NEVER met in the flesh!

By the time we parted ways he’d told me about 3 projects he wanted me to handle. Two for him. One for a private university he runs with Victor Ogar, his Nigerian partner of many years. All three relate to the Web Marketing based Hosting Service I provide.

Earning Income Working From Anywhere (True Story)

Yesterday, I was in a Cotonou taxi headed for the Benin Republic-Nigeria border, when Alhaji Usman S., CEO of a pelleted livestock feed manufacturing company in Nigeria’s Kano State, called, and we spoke like old friends…even though we have NEVER met.

I’ve been having such conversations weekly, with increasing frequency since last year…

If truth be told however, I could not have taken my work to the level it is today, if I’d stayed in Nigeria.

Erratic power supply, and other annoyances would have drastically held me back.

So, the insight that led me to relocate to Benin Republic, from Nigeria, now looks great (on hindsight). I’ve been able to work often uninterrupted for 20 hours daily for most of the past year.

And that’s now yielding fruits that I describe in the rest of this article.

NB: Interestingly, some misinformed persons who write me, assume I either buy articles – or have a team of writers working for me. Nothing could be further from the truth. I ALONE create ALL the content on this site. I’ll address this fully in my next article.

But back to Alhaji…

He first called my MTN Nigeria mobile, last September (2013) after coming across my Ration Formulator video on Youtube. Only 6 months ago.

That day, I was in Lagos, conducting questionnaire surveys for my agribusiness case study research paper. He spoke with me for almost 30 minutes, expressing his appreciation for, and interest in my work. We ended that conversation, with him insisting I send him payment details so he could send funds for the handbook and software.

A day later, I did that, but never heard from him.

But a Farm CEO based in Uyo, who recently purchased my Ration Formulator and Feed Formulation Handbook, told me he needed information about manufacturers of feed packaging bags. It occurred to me that Alhaji might have useful contacts that could help my client. So, I reached out to him.

He confirmed that he had such contacts, and readily offered to help my client.

But before we ended the call, he brought up the issue of the products he wanted to buy, explaining that he’d traveled right after asking me to send payment details.

By the time I hung up, he’d reconfirmed the payment details. This afternoon the payment came through. Tomorrow, I’ll send his pack, containing the Ration Formulator CD and Handbook, via ABC Transport courier service.

Once again, another total stranger has taken a leap of faith to buy from me – even though I have no office, and shuttle between 2 countries!

Exactly ONE year ago today, I left my family in Lagos-Nigeria and relocated to Cotonou in Benin Republic, to work as a Location Independent Multipreneur.

It was the first lap of a journey I’d resolved would take me across the entire West African region. Indeed, I’m now preparing to MOVE ON to another Francophone African nation, though Cotonou may remain my base.

I’d planned to celebrate this maiden anniversary by opening my small brew pub in a larger rented Cotonou property, which my wife and kids would eventually join me to run.

So far however, it’s been hard to find a property owner willing to let me use the rented residence the way I plan. At least that’s what those I’ve met have said. I’m thinking they have some fears as well. So I’m thinking I’ll just get a larger place, bring my family down, and simply start by offering home delivery and pick up service.

I’m writing this from my home in Lagos, today 1st April 2014.

Apart from coming down for a meeting with a new Web Marketing client (who used to be the accountant of a company that has been using my Payslip Generator since 2007 – but has now launched his own consultancy since  January), TODAY – like I said earlier – makes it EXACTLY ONE YEAR since I relocated to live and work from Cotonou, Benin Republic.

So, I wanted to spend the day and the rest of the week with my loved ones. I wrote THIS article for my blog as part of the “celebration”.

The benefit of hindsight shows clearly that my decision to relocate was a good one.

For instance….

1. Yesterday, a Farm CEO from Tanzania, who bought my Ration Formulator software last year, wrote me an email that he wanted to buy my new Feed Formulation (and Compounding) Home Study Video Package.

This is my latest product, and it includes the popular feed formulation handbook and a 4 hour video tutorial in which I explain the theory and practice of feed formulation using my handbook’s pages as a reference on the screen.

I’ve since replied him to confirm that the price of the Home Study Package is N25, 000. And it includes the software, a physical copy of the handbook, and the DVD containing the 4 hour video series, PLUS the PDF user guide for the software etc

As a member of my Farm Biz Ideas club, however, he will only pay N15k, since each member get a 40% lifetime discount on ALL my other products and services .

2. Last Friday, a consultant in Kenya (who had been corresponding with me for over 3 weeks), emailed me confirmatory details of payment sent by his Farm CEO client, to purchase the lower priced, monthly/mini version of the more pricey full fledged Poultry Farm Manager software.

However, my online account failed to reflect the payment, right up till today, even though they’d sent me the automatic transcript generated from the bank transfer process in Kenya.

Luckily, I was in Lagos, when he wrote in this morning to say the bank in Kenya had told his client that the account information I’d supplied was not complete/accurate.

So I replied that I would visit the bank in the morning, and have them sort it out for me.

By 4p.m today, I was able to send him detailed feedback supplied by the bank. Basically, they found out that I’d sent the wrong account details to Kenya. All things being equal, the Farm CEO will be able to make payment when he tries again.

Having said above, it’s the fact that they stuck with this effort to send payment that I want to highlight…

Neither the consultant, nor his client has ever met me in person.

We only spoke for the first time last Friday.

I called the consultant to discuss specifications of features for a hatchery module they are looking to have me develop, and integrate with the existing app, if they are satisfied with the latter, post usage.

Final Words: A Great Way to Celebrate!

In other words, I’m saying all these farm owners and stakeholders reaching out to me only have my Web Marketing System to work with.

But when they make contact, I show up as represented, and that convinces them to go ahead and send payment – and some return again!

There’s no better way, than THAT, to celebrate one’s first anniversary as a Location Independent Multipreneur!

Story: After Resolving Layers Feeding Problems, Selling Increased Eggs Output Became a Headache!

A young couple tackles unexpected challenges in running their commercial layer farm. This story illustrates how Cost-Saving Best Practice ideas, tools and strategies, can be used to solve problems, and boost long term farm performance/profits.

=Story Begins=

Chike looked at the growing layers of egg crates in the farm shop. They were rapidly running out of free space to put new arrivals from the farm.

Ever since they returned to using the right quality ingredients – based on their derived ration formular – their 8,000 layers had been producing eggs at a Hen Day Percentage (HDP) of between 70 to 75% daily.

And this had translated to over 25% increase in egg collections, compared to what they were getting before.

To keep track of the farm’s Key Performance Indicators(KPIs), Chike and Shade (his wife), had always used their Poultry Farm Manager software.

In addition to other KPIs, it auto-computed the daily HDP for each of the layer pens.

Then it plotted the daily value for each layers pen into ONE line chart. This made it possible to compare the performance of the groups of birds in the different pens.

So far the plotted lines remained fairly close together, and had now stayed above 70% for over 4 weeks.

This assured Chike that the birds were all doing fairly well.

But the situation had been quite different, over 2 months earlier.

The couple had noticed a progressive downward sloping of the plotted HDP lines.

From well above 75%, the points plotted had dropped under 70% and plunged below 60% within 2 weeks!

It was an alarming change, and did not appear to be slowing down at the time.

Shade had posted data from the Farm Production Records Form filled by the farm hands, into the spreadsheet software on the Monday starting the 3rd week of the drops in HDP values.

What she saw had made her quickly call Chike on the phone

“I think we have a problem. The HDP just dropped below the 60% lower limit. These birds are not doing well at all!” she said

“But we’ve checked and confirmed there’s no sign of infection. We’ve diligently used all relevant medication in their feed.  What else can we do? “ Chike replied.

Shade said “Chike,  think it’s time we took a look again at what we’re feeding them dear. I know we asked Jero the last time and he said he was using the ration formula we gave him.

But I have a feeling we’re still missing something at that end.

Look, even when one has a good ration formula, you know compounding the ration properly is another matter entirely. How are we sure the feed being bagged for us, is actually properly compounded to deliver the benefits of our ration formula?”

Chike was quiet for a while. Jero was his friend, and he felt it would be unfair to subject him to suspicion in a way that could damage their relationship.

But he also realized that his wife was making a good point.

So he agreed.

And they paid Jero an unannounced visit at his feed mill on a day/time he’d mentioned he would be producing the next 2 tonne batch of feed for their farm.

They were shocked to discover that Jero had quietly changed the composition of feed agreed, to reduce costs, while still selling to them at the normal prices.

This was their long term supplier, with whom they had had a contract arrangement to produce bagged feed, since they started out 4 years earlier!

They also found out he’d been using weevil infested maize grains from an isolated silo, to compound rations for unsuspecting farmers.

That explained the growing presence of weevils they’d noticed in some batches of feed.

It was heart breaking for Chike especially.

He and Jero went way back.

Jero tried to explain. His operating costs had risen due to the fuel scarcity crisis. He’d had to run his diesel generator for much longer periods, and the costs had really eaten deep into his cash flow.

That was when he recalled the isolated silo of grains.

Normally he would never have considered using it, but he was running low on the good quality stock of maize.

So he decided to mix a little from the infested one with each batch of feed. Then when he got no negative feedback, he’d increased the amount added.

It was the eventual impact of poor quality ingredients on the bird’s performance that led to Chike and his wife paying him the visit.

Chike and Shade had always felt they needed to have their own feed mill.

They knew it would enable them have closer quality control on the feed manufacturing process for their birds. And they’d been pursuing funding with their bankers for that purpose.

Following their discovery of Jero’s deceit, they renewed their efforts.

Their bankers eventually agreed to finance the setup of a 2 tonne feed mill.

The feeding problems soon became a thing of the past: And then another problem reared its head!

They were not the only ones who had eggs to sell. What was more, two new farms had also commenced operations on the other side of town.

With the couple’s own dramatic increase in production, a glut of sorts had occurred.

Unfortunately, there was no festive season around the corner to look forward to.

Normally, festivities meant purchases would increase, and they could quickly sell out excess stocks of eggs.

But it was just late August. Christmas was still far away.

The couple’s farm shop store rarely got half filled. This was because the market women often came daily to buy between 5 to 50 crates (in groups).

However, these women always bargained hard. And they had no loyalties to anyone.

They kept communication links with competitor farms through friends and other sellers.

Chike knew they often compared prices offered from his shop with that of other farm owners, and used that to negotiate concessions etc.

He did not mind giving in, as bulk sales often made up for it.

However, during glut periods, the women tended to really get mean.

That had been the case since the start of this week. They had been coming around but not buying.

Instead they would claim Mr. A’s farm was offering them N10 less or even lower.

The women knew many farmers were scared of letting the eggs get spoilt from over staying in storage.

Their farm shop stores were not built for long term storage. Poor circulation of air and presence of rodents were a major concern.

And this often made farmers accept exploitative offers from the market women during glut periods.

Chike Naturally Felt Betrayed, and a Little Bitter

These women had been buying from him for the 4 years since he and his wife started their farm business.

He had often let them take products away without in full, sometimes without paying at all – so they could pay later.

Some had even come so close that he loaned them money to pay their kids school fees, and they paid back as they sold the eggs they collected on credit.

Yet, during periods like this, some would gang up and basically try to eat their cake and have it.

If one was weak, s/he would end literally giving the farm away out of fear of being stuck with excess eggs no one would buy.

As he stood thinking, the mini van – filled with another load of eggs from the farm – arrived with his wife behind the wheel.

They’d let the driver go a month before. He’d complained about the work load and demanded an increase in salary they could not afford at the time.

They were now wondering if that had been a wise decision, as it was beginning to tell on them.

The bus was filled with eggs from yesterday’s production.

And as she joined him, Shade handed him the Farm Production Records form. The handwritten entries showed the birds were not relenting in churning out more eggs as at the the second collection for the day.

It was the only time he’d ever found himself wishing the layers would NOT do so well!

“What are the women saying dear?” Shade asked

Chike replied saying: “The same thing they said yesterday. They basically want us to sell to them at cost price, or they’ll not buy as much as they normally do. They claim some other farm is offering more. I’ve asked them to consider the cost of transportation to get the eggs from that other farm. But they insist it does not matter. But you and I know it does. They just want to take advantage of the situation” he replied in resignation.”

As he said those words, Chike recalled a conversation they’d had with Bello (their Farm Business Best Practice Consultant), about their sales and marketing strategy.

Bello had pointed out that it was risky to depend too heavily on individual, low price buyers, especially as they (i.e Chike and Shade) aimed for much higher farm output.

He noted that apart from the stress of handling smaller transactions, there was also the challenge of emptying the store in a timely manner, to avoid build back to the farm.

It occurred to Chike that THAT was exactly what they were facing.

Bello had advised reaching out to businesses that made regular use of eggs and chicken meat (for disposal of old layers).

He’d recommended that Chike and Shade make special bulk offers to such businesses (e.g. hotels, restaurants, bars, catering outfits etc) – possibly with an agreement to either let them pick up the products from the farm shop, or to transport it to their premises for a fee.

The objective would be to establish a long term arrangement with as many such potential bulk buyers at possible. That way, as they found need for more buyers, they could simply call them up.

Bello had warned that succeeding with the strategy would require some persistence. But he’d also assured that it would work quite well, once in place.

Now resolved in his mind, Chike grabbed Shade by the arm, and said “You know. I think we can do better than what we’re doing now. At the level we’re operating, we cannot simply let these women hold us to ransom like this. Do you remember what Bello told us to try doing?”

“You mean reaching out to owners of hotels and restaurants to buy from us on contract basis?” asked Shade

“Yes. I think it’s what we need to do. Apart from ensuring we no longer run out of possible buyers, we’ll also be able to sell out faster, since these kinds of people would buy in bulk” said Chike.

Shade said “Hmm. I think you’re right. But it won’t be easy, as Bello said. However, given the experience we’re having in the hands of these women, I think we now know it’s better for us to explore that option. In fact, even if there was no glut situation, selling out faster in bulk appeals to me.

It means we’ll have more free time, and worry less about managing large stocks of eggs in the stock. We’ll just need to keep those we approach informed of the next availability of bulk eggs stocks for purchase.”

“Well, we better get started then.” Chike said, with a note of excitement in his voice.

“Let’s begin with the hotel near the roundabout on the way to the Governor’s office. When I was still working with Business Machines Limited, we used to hold our sales training sessions in their meetin ghalls. We might be able to strike something off with him.”

Take Away: Do Your Marketing BEFORE You’re Ready to Sell!

The above message is not necessarily jusf for poultry farmers.

If you’re a farm business owner, I doubt that I need to say much more here.

My message is this:

a. Adopt Best Practice based Continuous Improvement Systems in your farm business, to help you avoid and/or resolve potentially serious problems.

b. Do your marketing well ahead of when you will have need for buyers to take your farm products off you!

That way, you’ll make better profits, and also go through less stress.

Achieve Writing Success by Reading More Frequently and Deliberately

Late last year, I decided to begin writing short story pieces. Click here to read my first ever (500 word) attempt titled “The High School Students Street Fight”, which I entered for the GKBCinc Short Story Competition on 31st December 2013.

I intend to write many more short stories. Most will be based on real life experiences I’ve had, but written in a language that will appeal to kids as well as adults.

My plan is to challenge myself by deliberately entering each piece for ANY available online competitions. Or offline ones that do not require much registration hassle.

Why This Interest in Writing Short Stories?

You see, I’ve noticed that people love to read stories…often fiction or part fiction. They love to read novels – be it fiction or those based on real life events.

I happen to have lots of stories from real life experiences to share.

Over the years, I’ve noticed formal non-fiction writing does not appeal to all those who stand to benefit from the lessons offered in my writing.

But I’ve observed that most people react positively to true story pieces I write.

So, I’m deliberately adopting the use of short stories, to reach out to more members of my target audience.By infusing more entertainment – and less formality – into my writing, I aim to succeed more often in getting my message across to people who need to “hear” it.

I’ll be doing it based on the categories I focus on (e.g. career development, self-development, parenting, entrepreneurship, writing/blogging etc).

To this end, I have now created a Short Stories category to aid people who may wish to search for my write-ups that fall into this new area.

I’m Also Doing It to Help My Kids Become More Competent Writers and Readers

You see, I pay a lot of attention to what my kids tell me about school. I ask them questions about what they learn, their teachers etc.

What I learn convinces me I need to help my kids learn to use self-study techniques to complement whatever they get in school.

My passion for self-education drives me to challenge them to work hard at developing self-tutoring skills.

Succeeding with self-tutoring requires forming a healthy reading habit.

The problem is traditional schools, the way they operate, often make learners develop an aversion for reading.

When reading is not felt to be pleasurable, by the learner, s/he will avoid it wherever/whenever possible. And that will happen a lot when s/he is outside school …where it is unlikely to be “formally required”.

I noticed this was affecting my kids. They did not like being told to read – except it was a comic or magazine with fun content.

So I began encouraging them to think up and write short stories of their own.

To give them ideas, I suggested they read short story books by other authors, and to refer to narratives of traditional African folk tales.

The process has been slow, but so far I’ve gotten the 14 year old to complete one short story, while the 10 and 12 year olds are working to finish their first pieces.

Starting a Parent and Children “Self-Publishing Venture”

I have decided we’ll publish – both online and off the web – a collection of our short stories as a family, in one book, that will be offered for sale.

Years of experience working with kids and young people tells me this strategy can help me boost their natural interest in reading and writing.

I believe when my kids see their names and stories in print, they’ll get excited. Then even if only ONE sale happens, it will inspire them to think of writing more!

And that desire to write more, with coaching I provide, will make them want to read more as well.

Why will this happen?

It’s because the writing process often benefits greatly from reading that is done by a person. And they will discover that, as they participate in this exercise.

Many Great Writers Are Reputed to Have Started Out as Great – Often Voracious(!) – Readers

This is true. And it makes a lot of sense does it not? Very common sense I might add!

But one thing to note is that the quality of what is read is crucially important.

When you read “junk”, your development as a writer is likely to suffer. That’s why great writers recommend reading books by great authors…and nothing else.

Again, it’s just simple common sense.

I’m going to apply that common sense in coaching my kids to develop sound reading/writing skills.

And I aim to help them acquire the ability to earn tangible income using those skills.

Publishing My First Ever Short Story Is the First Step

As I’ve mentioned earlier in this piece, I intend get “The High School Students Street Fight” published as one of a collection of short stories to appear in a book by me and my kids.

Read my 14 year old son’s article titled “The Fool Who Thought He Was Wise (A 14 Year old’s Useful Story About HIV Aids Prevention)”. It will also be included…possibly with changes to make it a more compelling read.

I’ll try and make our collection of stories have illustrations to make each one interesting, especially to kids.

Today’s advanced PC and Internet technologies make doing the above relatively easy, convenient and affordable.

In fact it can even be done very cheap or at zero cost – if you choose to use Print On Demand Publishing – like I do, and which I strongly recommend.

That’s why I believe more parents may find it useful to adopt a similar approach, to help their kids develop more real world relevant reading and writing skills.
