How to Avoid Reinventing the Wheel

“Start hanging around people that are doing what you want to do. Look at the pros, the masters, the giants – and learn from them. Become a student in life. And then start doing little things that you can feel good about” – Les Brown

Why repeat other people’s mistakes when you can avoid them by taking known precautions others can tell you about? Each person you meet in life will have a unique blend of knowledge, skills and experiences that could potentially benefit others – including you.

Sadly, some people neglect to “tap” from other people’s experiences. And this causes them to go through needless pains in order to achieve their goals.

So, who are these people who can help you avoid re-inventing the wheel?

Some are your friends, relatives, colleagues etc. Others could be celebrity types you don’t have ready access to. They may have proven expertise in a particular activity you wish to engage in.

I once had to prepare a business plan towards my first attempt at raising funds for a fish-farming project. So I sought help from a former accountant colleague. He gave me useful details to make my plan/offer more attractive to prospective investors.

When he became unavailable to continue helping me, I quickly thought of someone else. Harvey MacKay’s saying that “Dig Your Well Before You Become Thirsty”proved quite useful to me.

While introducing my services to various companies, I had deliberately stayed in touch with certain executives, by giving them updates on progress I was making with my work. As a result, they were thus able to gauge my level of seriousness over time.

When I eventually needed help with my business plan, I approached one of them – a partner in a successful corporate training firm. On an agreed date, despite his extremely busy schedule, he took me through the basic elements of business plan preparation. It was one of the most enlightening experiences I had ever had.

Eighteen years of banking experience, combined with over ten years of management training and consulting experience. He drew upon all that, to give me a down-to-earth and realistic picture of how to prepare/present a business plan that worked.

But how do you go about meeting people who can help you, you might ask?

1. Remove the blocks from your thinking. Stop thinking you cannot get someone – even a stranger or an important person – to help you. Instead, think like this:He or she is only human – flesh and blood – just like me, so it can’t be that difficult”.

2. Find out who can help you. Make sure you are clear in your mind about the reason(s) why you think he/she can help you.

3. Develop an action plan for reaching out to her.

4. Be relentless in pursuing the person. You are the one who needs help, so you must be ready to accept whatever they tell you about their availability.

In the case of the training consultants I mentioned above, I repeatedly visited their office premises at least once every month (or twice at times) for over 10 months. Within that period, I never got to see any of them more than twice. Yet, by the time I needed help, that was enough to make one of them take me seriously.

Very few people(if any) will tell you they cannot spare the time to help you.

But they could ask you to make repeat visits before eventually granting you audience.

Follow up diligently, and put your thoughts together up front. Rehearse your points (write them down if you prefer), and use them to set the tone of the meeting. When they give you their attention, your presentation will determine how they respond to your request – and if they’ll want to meet with you subsequently.

So, be careful how you “sell” yourself. Be open, candid, very sincere – and let it show through. Your physical appearance matters a lot. You do not however need to dress expensively.

Strategic partnership can also help you avoid re-inventing the wheel

Another idea you can use: Join forces with someone whose skills, knowledge and resources complement yours. Someone who has something you lack, but which you need – and possibly cannot get on your own(at that point in time). It could be money, physical resources (like a building or office space) or experience in an area you wish to venture.

Strategic partnership can be exploited by an entrepreneur to raise needed funds. It can also save you the hassle of making avoidable mistakes, or enable you access useful resources to achieve progress.

One example: To launch a book publishing business, you could partner with an experienced book writing coach. In exchange for giving her clients special discounts to get published on your platform, she could guide you to setup your venture with minimal trial and error.

Final Words

In certain societies, people may not readily share what they know – or have – with others, even when promised equivalent benefit in return. As a result, more people are likely to end up making avoidable mistakes. But even in such cultures, you can still find persons willing to help you shorten your learning curve. Just persist – and look beyond the discouraging results that may show up. Doing so can help you avoid re-inventing the wheel, so that you can succeed faster.

You’ll Never Succeed If You Give Up!

If you’ve ever been told you’re trying to achieve the impossible with respect to a valued goal you’re pursuing, in business or elsewhere, and you STILL continued, then this article is for YOU!

And if you know anyone who fits the foregoing description, this write-up could help you gain a better understanding of what she’s about :-)

Do You Feel You’re Being Controlled By An Irresistible Force?

You don’t know how to explain it, but your pursuit of your purpose in life is no longer in your control.

Instead, it seems to have taken on a life of it’s own. And you now find yourself being more of a spectator as it acts itself out through you!

Your friends and loved ones no longer understand you. This…this…obsession of yours makes no sense to them. Yes, that’s what it is: a senseless obsession as far as they are concerned.

Your spouse or mother has probably asked you the following question (in a concerned and loving voice):

“Why won’t you see reason and give up this dream of yours that’s turning you into someone else?”

But all you do is go right back to chase your dream or goal…or obsession

You Don’t Seem To Know When You’re Beaten

Each time they’ve seen you get knocked over by repeated devastating setbacks, you have miraculously gotten back up, against their expectations!

But what they fail to realise is that each of those times, it was not you.

It was the power of your dream.

That insane obsession of yours. It’s given you an amazing ability to withstand the hardest knocks and bounce back in little or no time to resume right where you left off!

They do not know you are now firmly under the intoxicating influence of your magnificent obsession.

Before now, when you were just starting this journey, it was YOU who had to keep yourself going inspite of failures, temporary defeats, prolonged periods of intense anxiety, and other forms of adversity.

Back then, YOU had to muster the courage to continue, to grit your teeth and push back harder against those frequent negative experiences that kept befalling you.

You had to pass those shrewd tests of your resolve by the forces of nature. Eventually you broke through, and began making headway towards your valued goal.

You Celebrate Baby Steps of Progress – To The Amusement of Others!

It always amazes those around you, that just one tiny inch of progress you achieve at any time readily gives you unbelievable pleasure and sense of accomplishment.

Those baby steps taken closer to your dream mean the world to you, though others around you silently think they make no difference to your situation!

But that’s because they cannot see what you see. You’ve been doing this for a while now, and your conviction rather than waver, has grown stronger, because the faint visions of the future that you’ve been having, have since become much clearer.

And now, having kept at it for so long, the life purpose you pursue (which in some circles is called a Magnificent Obsession) now drives you, instead of you having to chase it!

You now instinctively sense the right way to think, and act, to make progress to the next stage. It’s almost like you’ve become psychic.

Where it concerns making progress towards your dream, you just seem to KNOW things without being told.

And sometimes very strange and powerful coincidences – consistent with needs you’re nursing – sometimes happen to the total amazement of even those who doubt you!

Your Success Is Close By

All of these happenings can be a little scary, but at the same time you find them reassuring.

A voice inside of you tells you this is a new level of self mastery you’ve arrived at.

Your persistence has paid off in form of a higher ability that now equips you to continue – more intelligently – in pursuit of your dream.

It won’t be long now, before the others, including the doubters – and especially the haters! – see that you have indeed arrived – and by so doing proved them wrong about you.

That’s why the last thought that should cross your mind right now is giving up, or quitting.

If you do that now, you’ll be kicking yourself for the rest of your life…or until you “kick the bucket”!

Hello,

This will interest you if you are:

a. preparing for retirement

b. an organisational decision maker who prepares employees for retirement

c. planning to start a business part-time, while remaining in paid employment

d. planning to quit your job to start/run your own business full time

Many people spend a substantial part of their lives working for their employer without giving thought to the day they will have to leave – often by way of retirement. There are of course those who resign to start their own businesses. And…there is that not so lucky group who get asked to leave :-(

The question is how prepared WILL the people who fall into the above categories BE, for the real world of their societies when they find themselves in it?

For many who have made that transition out here, in Nigeria, the experiences were often traumatising.

The truth is that in Nigeria, going from salary to self-employment is NOTHING like what obtains in America, or other developed societies! There are NO social security safety nets. Few “protection” bodies exist that diligently help those who get “knocked” down unfairly as often happens out here.

Which is why having access to INFORMATION and EDUCATION from a credible and reliable source
about what lies ahead, and how to proceed – by way of special reports, feasibility studies and even non-formal background checks/investigations, can be something of a God-send.

I nurse a special interest in this group of people and offer a customised range of products/services designed to help them prepare for that inevitable exit from paid employment.

No matter what anyone says, my experiences have taught me that apart from being COMPETENT, there is a serious need to develop the proper mindset needed for adapting to life without “steady salaried income”, as well as the need to “control bad/unhealthy spending habits” among a lot of other issues.

Most importantly, taking the decision about WHAT to do after you leave your job– and how to prepare for it, so as to increase your chances of success, is a major task to be given quality attention.

You need information – the RIGHT information.

Unbiased, down to earth, factual, and experience based observations (and up-to-date data) from someone who has been on the streets.

This is Nigeria. Many times what you read in papers and hear on radio/TV, especially about what business is good to venture into, is NOT so accurate.

Why not minimise the risks you expose yourself to? And the pain that frequently accompanies resultant losses?

You can do that by signing up for my confidential service in which I help you do all the ground work – running around to gather information, insights, data etc into reports and feasibility studies and other analyses you can use to make intelligent decisions?

The best part is that the required investment for this service entitles you to get – up to 25% discount – ALL my products/services (Custom Spreadsheet Software developmentWeb MarketingBest Practice Farm Biz etc) which are designed to support business owners.

Decision Makers? Invite Me To Speak To Your Prospective Retirees

Many responsible companies organise “Pre-Retirement Seminars” for their outgoing employees. I think it’s a great thing.

However, I have – in a past life – functioned as Training & Technical Development Manager in a large multinational manufacturer.

Looking back, I honestly believe – going by my experiences over the past 10 years as an entrepreneur – that most of those events rarely offer THE REAL-WORLD (NIGERIA) RELEVANT information or education, that is badly needed by these people.

That’s why I now offer to give specially developed talks and seminars for employees of interested companies. If you are a decision maker, please consider engaging my services. Your retirees WILL thank you.

Writing Is The Key To Business Marketing Success

One hasn’t become a writer until one has distilled writing into a habit, and that habit has been forced into an obsession. Writing has to be an obsession. It has to be something as organic, physiological and psychological as speaking or sleeping or eating.
Niyi Osundare

Writing when done effectively, can be used to get favorably noticed. And you can also use it to influence change.

It is because I’ve experienced the above powerful truth many times in different stages of my life that I am today simply unable to give up writing.

Without my writing I would not have achieved most of the success and progress I’ve recorded in paid as well as self employment.

What do you do when you have little or no money to spend on marketing and advertising to attract buyers?

When you don’t know any powerful, rich or connected persons to open doors for you to meet important decision makers(bypassing gatekeepers).

How do you establish credibility as an expert in your subject or field before a potentially global audience of readers and potential clients?

It is my experience based conviction that writing is the most cost effective and reliable way to achieve the above.

Indeed, I have achieved all the above through writing over the past ten years.

Even in a socioeconomic environment like mine, where trust can be so hard to earn, I’ve repeatedly generated high quality sales leads and won sales using nothing but my writing.

It has also earned me valuable paid speaking opportunities. I’m building more client relationships and partnerships with people I’ve yet to meet from across the country, and as far as Singapore, Canada and the USA.

If I had not adopted writing, especially web writing, I would NEVER have achieved any of the above. I know this for a fact.

And that’s why relatives close to me will tell you that if I had to choose between eating and finishing off a new article according to my schedule, I’d do the latter without giving it a second thought.

The quote credited to Niyi Osundare above perfectly describes what writing means to me. It’s essential to my progress in business and in life.

In Paid Employment, Writing Helped Me Attract Career Advancement Opportunities

It was in paid employment that I first discovered how powerful writing could be.

In Guinness Nigeria I was trained as a brewer and line manager. I joined the company as a graduate trainee in October 1994, and voluntarily left to become self employed in December 2001.

During that time I was widely recognised – and rewarded with rapid career advancement – for my ideas, initiatives and innovations which I used my writing to bring to the attention of key decision makers.

Quite often my ideas were developed in my spare time or as I went through each day. None of it was in my job description at any time. I just identified an opportunity to make a useful contribution, and simply followed my instincts.

I worked very hard and long hours then. Just like I still do when necessary today

My latest ebook is a product of that process.

I originally wrote it as a guest post to share my ideas about how I get my writing done.

But it was over 3,500 words long, attracting requests to trim down and refine it.

It was while I was rewriting it that I discovered I needed to submit a finished ebook for the October 2012 AWAI Writing Challenge I’d enrolled for.

The thought just struck me that my long article could do well as an ebooklet at least. Since I did not have any other content in readier form, convincing myself to go this route was easy :-)

But I was not lazy about it. I took time to flesh out relevant parts, and rewrite some. Then I prepared a cover and setup the online store.

Completing that process was more important to me than winning any reward.

Here’s an example of how following my instincts led me to use my writing to influence change in paid employment:

2 years after joining Guinness Nigeria Benin Brewery, I wrote a series of papers as a green horned brewer, arguing that a faulty formula had been used for years in computing a performance parameter called “Brewhouse Turn Around Time(TRT)”.

Using spreadsheet examples based on real brewing data, I proved my point, and proposed an adjustment to the formula to eliminate the error.

I ruffled a number of senior colleagues’ feathers, as you can imagine, but my conviction gave me the courage to push my ideas through to senior management.

The changes were eventually accepted.

Later in 1997, I wrote a management research paper based on my experiences for entry into the (now defunct) Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM)’s Young Manager’s Competition. After placing 5th at the national finals in Lagos, I discovered many senior executives suddenly knew my name.

I would later learn that my boss at the time, Greg, had announced my achievement at the brewery management meeting.

Interestingly, my entry to that event was self sponsored while I was on leave. He only got to know because after winning at the zonal finals, I’d resumed work, and had to request days off to travel to Lagos for the national finals.

What I’m trying to say here is that it was a personal goal I set for myself. I just saw the newspaper advert, and – again – followed my instincts. It was never my intention to let my boss know.

But he eventually did. And I got recognised in my company as a result of my efforts to use my writing to share ideas I had from my workplace experiences, with the outside world.

A year later, in 1998, I returned with a paper to senior management proposing the adoption of a brewery performance measure.

I called it “Brewhouse Efficiency%”(BHE) and used the weighted formula I derived for it on five years of real data, with charts.

My argument was that BHE provided a more balanced measure of the overall performance of the brewing department, unlike the TRT which only looked at one of three contributory aspects.

This paper got the attention of top management, and was discussed at the Monthly Technical Review Meetings for 6 months.

During that time, the Lagos brewery was asked to test the formula using their own brewing data. I still recall taking calls from Chizzy Uduanochie, who was then in Lagos Harp Brewery at Ogba, to explain how to go about getting correct raw data to feed into the formula.

During that year I was seconded twice to act as Training & Technical Development Manager.

I have no doubts in my mind that my 1997 and ’98 achievements influenced top management’s decision in that regard.

This especially since other more senior and experienced candidates were passed over in the process. A lot more of that would happen right into the year I left.

The above results are just a few examples of the unique experiences that opened my eyes to the power that writing effectively can confer on anyone.

So, going into self employment, especially after reading online about information publishing, I was convinced I could use my writing to earn income.

Writing Can Also Be Therapeutic – For Coping With Adversity As A Startup

A writer never has a vacation. For a writer life consists of either writing or thinking about writing.
Eugene Ionesco

It’s common knowledge that hard – and harsh – times that new entrepreneurs inevitably encounter often lead many to quit and return to the security of paid employment for instance.

I know what it feels like to enter the proverbial “university of hard knocks” (i.e the real world), from a salaried job, and suddenly find yourself struggling with a perpetual scarcity of money.

And I don’t mean big bucks. No. I’m talking about small money. The kind that I used to give away to others without a thought knowing that I had more than I needed from regular salary payments.

The idea of actually running out of cash never really seemed real to me. Until when I spent the last naira from the entitlement paid to me by Guinness following my decision to resign despite great career prospects ahead of me.

You must understand that I had my kids and their mother to worry about. Having relocated from Benin, we were living in my parents’ home till I could find a place.

Unfortunately business had not gone as planned, and I’d exhausted the funds meant for renting a place in pursuing leads and covering expenses!

The embarassment and humiliation was one I felt could kill me. And that was just the beginning.

I have since gone on to experience not having money to get prescribed malaria drugs for my child, and having to watch him suffer pains and high fever all night till I was able to borrow money the next morning.

It’s amazing how a lack of cash can help one achieve mental clarity. You initially feel a strange sense of terror. But if you keep calm and let the realisation of your situation wash over you, it won’t seem so bad.

During this period the words supposedly utterred by a few former colleagues from Guinness came back to haunt me. I’d heard that they’d called me “mad”, for choosing to resign at a time when I was doing so well.

But I refused to let that bother me. Even in my pain right then in 2003, I knew I would not be happier doing anything else.

Working a 9 to 5 job had become too limiting for me. I wanted the freedom to use my ideas and energies to serve a larger audience, without the restrictions of a structured workplace.

So I turned to reading the books that had inspired me. Napoleon Hill’s Think & Grow Rich and James Cook’s “Startup Entrepreneur” were my favorites.

Out of desperation, I began highlighting phrases and other blocks of text (e.g anecdotes about hardships other successful people experienced and survived) that I found especially helpful.

At a point, I decided to type the highlighted text in MS Word, so I could re-read them to boost my morale. Later I began writing my own anecdotes and experiences into it.

NB: By early 2004, it had grown into an 80 page ebook titled “Entrepreneur’s Survival Reference Manual(25 Avoidable Mistakes No One Will Warn You About In Starting Your Own Business In Nigeria)”.

But I did not put it up for sale. It was mainly for my personal use. Whenever I needed a boost, I got on my PC and opened the PDF.

James Cook wrote that “the entrepreneur needs no samaritans.” I decided to look inwards.

That day in 2003, I got the idea to write my 70 page Feed Formulation Handbook. Not long after, I wrote my “Proven 5 Step Formula for Learning Any Language In Three Months or Less”.

Both books were experience based. I was following the advice in Mr. Hill’s book. I had no money, but I knew stuff that I was convinced people would pay me money to get.
I did not have money to get them published normally. But rather than let that stop me, I chose to print them out, then make neat photocopies which I gave to those who paid.

So, I began telling friends and relatives about both books. The language book quickly earned buyers. I did more thinking and took a copy to Ola Fajemisin, the TV producer for NTA 2 Channel 5 whose name I’d seen scrolling across the screen for years.

I’d never met or spoken with him before. But when he arrived in his office to meet with me, I spoke to him with all the enthusiasm I could muster, proposing a weekly French language show based on my book.

When I finally shut up, he flipped through the spiral bound copy I put on his table, looked at me, and said “I think it’s a good idea. But let’s get you to appear and discuss the book on Saturday’s Morning Ride Show” and see how people call in. We’ll use that to decide whether or not to go ahead.”

That was a show many paid handsome sums to appear on. He put me on it free. My sister called to tell me her friend saw me being interviewed on TV and wanted a copy of my book. So I made more sales. And I knew I could do more.

The TV show idea did not make it due to poor response, but I’d earned useful achievement to put on my resume, and on the book’s sales page: Featured on NTA 2 Channel 5′ Morning Ride. Many clients till today refuse to believe I never paid a kobo to get that exposure for my tiny book!

In 2005, my relentless search led me to use Print On Demand publishing.

Not long after, I discovered article marketing and began using it to promote my books and services.

As An Entrepreneur Writing Has Helped Me Achieve Low Cost Name Recognition & Leads Generation

I’ll be 43 in July. This month 10 years ago, I was starting out as an entrepreneur, distributing spiral bound copies of my paper (Self-Development As A Tool for Achieving Career Advancement(A Practical Guide Based On Experience) to the HR/Training Managers and key executives in over 40 organisations across Lagos.

Notable examples included Lagos Business School’s Pat Utomi (he was not yet “Prof.” then) and Dr. J. Maiyaki of Center for Management Development, among others.
I’d typed the entire 45 page management research paper during my final weeks on the job I’d resigned from as Training and Technical Development Manager.

My plan was based on ideas I’d gotten from reading Michel Fortin’s “10 Commandments of Power Positioning” ebook.

Knowing that I needed low cost avenues to get my training and speaking services noticed by my target market, I’d excitedly adopted Fortin’s recommendations.

Using writing to attract potential clients was central to the message in his ebook.

Apart from Utomi who had his PA invite me to meet with him over my management research paper, only Dr. Maiyaki and his team went further to invite me to deliver a lecture (for which I was paid a honorarium).

Final Words: Web Writing Offers Financial Security In Today’s Uncertain Economy

Since then I have achieved even greater progress in my business using my writing – especially online.

The results I’ve gotten led me to recently sign up with constant-content.com as a writer offering my articles and services for sale.

In June 2012, I reinvented my online presence to revolve around THIS new blog as a central point for promoting my products and services.

As it is with everything else in life, one has to learn new ways to get more of the results he wants. I was excited when Constant Content sent me payment for my first and so far only sale.

But I know I need to master the art of writing what buyers want to read out there. I’m reading up on that.

Same applies to my sales on Lulu.com. I’m keen to get back to the times when I recorded sales of my books monthly.

There’s nothing more gratifying than being able to earn income from what you write or have written. The overheads are so low. And the margins potentially limitless.

I am also driven by a vision to show others how to earn income in this manner.

Especially people in parts of the world (like mine) with limited alternatives. And I’ve already started by teaching my kids what I know.

One thing is certain. I can never stop writing because I know it is the key to my dream of achieving financial freedom, especially via passive income streams from sales of my written works.

The way you define yourself as a writer is that you write every time you have a free minute. If you didn’t behave that way you would never do anything.
John Irving

Don’t Depend on Applause to Succeed

The Absence Of Applause May Not Mean You’re Failing

If everybody had seen upfront, what Thomas Edison’s inventions would do for the world, there’s no doubt they would have applauded and rooted round the world for him right from first day he began his research work.

But no one saw his breakthrough coming.

In the lonely confines of his laboratory, he kept on labouring with his assistants through over 9,000 failed attempts, until they found the tungsten fllament and the first light bulb glowed in their faces.

Unlike A Marathon, In Life Sometimes No One Can See the Finish Line!

The problem with striving for success can sometimes be that no one has done what you want to do before i.e in your socioeconomic environment.

That lack of precedent can make people stubbornly unbelieving when you tell them the goal you want to achieve.

Even when you point out the true story of another who succeeded in doing it elsewhere, they would scoff and say “Get real: That’s XYZ country or society. Ours does not operate based on their rules!!”

Let’s think about this for a moment.

Spectators standing near the finish line of a Marathon event can tell which runner is closest to victory.

In life however, spectators around you as you work towards your goal do not enjoy a similar advantage.

They cannot see into the future – obviously.

As a result, every day, week, month or year they see you working diligently at achieving your goals, that’s mostly all they’ll see: YOU.

And in their minds they could interprete what they see as “you slaving away trying to achieve a futile goal” :-)

It goes without saying, that the above “perception” of you would naturally not make them applaud you!

For some people, that would be okay i.e. no big deal.

But if you’re like Celia (i.e. the young lady described in the movie I’ve written about below), you’d probably be psychologically and emotionally devastated as a result of the lack of attention and applause.

The Story of A Young Lady Whose Desire for Applause/Attention Probably Got Her Killed

I once watched a movie in which detectives had to interview suspects and friends/acquaintances of a homicide victim.

The deceased young lady had been a member of a notorious church-styled cult which the police were already investigating using under cover agents.

While the police were questioning one of her female friends who had made a successful exit from the fold a year before, she told the agents “Celia needed to be liked. She needed people a little too much. And that’s why she was never able to leave.”

From reading through the books Celia had read, a police consultant later discovered scribbled notes in her copy of the founder’s published book: the notes indicated that she had been having issues with some of the church’s dogma.

That drew to mind the friend’s comment about her needing people too much.

“Could it be that she’d finally found the courage to voice her reservations openly?” they wondered.

“Maybe she was trying to leave the cult based on those grounds? Was she murdered to keep her from leaving?”

The above suggestions were logical possibilities. However, like all good stories, the movie took an unexpected turn that revealed the killer to be a non-member of the cult.

It was a legal consultant appointed by the founder himself. He did it to stop her exposing details of the affair he’d had with her, despite her being engaged to another member.

Self-Direction Is A Valuable Asset To Have

The above narrative illustrates how an individual’s lack of independent thinking and self-direction can make her prone to manipulation and exploitation at the hands of dishonest others.

When you do not have a mind of your own, others will do your thinking for you. Some will even try telling you how to act or react to the experiences you have; what to believe etc.

The truth is that you need to assert – and believe more in – yourself.

Don’t be too eager to seek the consent of others before you pursue a line of action that appeals to you.

Even better, dismiss any urge you may feel to court the approval and applause of others around you whenever you choose to follow your instincts and “do your own thing.”

Final Words

I want you to understand this: even when you’re inches away from achieving your goal, that fact may not be readily obvious to you, or your spectators.

Only when it happens does it become your reality.

That’s why when others are not applauding or commending you, it’s crucial that you do not take that to mean you’re not making progress.

Those others could be acting based on a lack of both insight and vision.

What you need to do is stay focussed on achieving what matters most i.e your goals.

Eventually they’ll see you succeed and a useful precedent would have been set.

Consequently, others after you could begin earning applause from spectators BEFORE they get to their individual finish lines.

But even if they get none, their knowledge of YOUR story could inspire them to continue until they also succeed!

Anytime you announce a plan, idea or intention you have, and someone says it’s impossible, be very careful in paying attention to him/her.

It does not matter who the person is.

In my experience, the fact that you conceived your goal or dream, is often a strong indication that you can achieve it.

That’s why I personally never listen to nay sayers.

It’s almost like many are programmed to act that way, meaning they often do very little reasoning to decide when to say something is impossible!

When Conceiving Your Goals Or Dreams, Reject Impossibilities

I hate the word “Impossible” with a passion. It’s been thrown at me so many times from my days in secondary school up till as recently as yesterday afternoon.

What I find most annoying, is the fact that those who use it often do so with no personal experience against which to measure the accuracy of what they say!

Yet they throw their opinions around with misguided confidence.

Sadly, some unsuspecting individuals take such advice to heart and give up their dreams or valued goals, only to live the rest of their lives feeling miserable.

The Human Mind Is More Powerful Than Most People Know

Yes. Your mind is a very powerful asset given you by the creator.

Napoleon Hill apparently understood this truth when he said “Whatever the mind can conceive, it can achieve.”

But most people do not believe the above truth. And that’s why many underachieve throughout their lifetimes.

You Can Do The “Impossible” – If You Believe You Can!

The above is not an idle claim.

History is replete with examples of people who recorded achievements that had previously been considered impossible.

And that’s why I dislike that word so intensely. By dictionary definition, it means something that cannot happen or that cannot be done.

A Few Quick Examples Of How The Impossible Has Been Made Possible In The Past

1. Roger Bannister:

Before Bannister did it, generally accepted wisdom subscribed to by well educated, intelligent and “reasonable” people was that it was IMPOSSIBLE for a man to run a mile under 4 minutes.

Today, many men do it effortlessly. And women do it too!

2. Fred Smith:

When Smith came up with the concept of overnight delivery in a term paper submitted to his professor, the latter said it was a nice idea, but that it would never work.

And he gave compelling reasons based on his “expert” knowlege to justify his position.

Smith was smart enough to realise that his professor could not be right about everything.

So he followed his instincts instead.

Today, many of us are better off because Fred Smith chose to ignore wise counsel about the impossibility of his concept(on which Fedex courier was established.)

3. Usain Bolt:

I read somewhere that the speeds attained by Bolt during a race, are illegal for cars in certain countries.

I would add that great sprinters from 10 years before Bolt, would insist that the amazing times he’s clocking today are impossible for any human to attain!

Two Personal Examples

In my case I’ve successfully done what many told me was impossible, more than once.

Here are 2 examples you can reflect upon.

1. Zero Cost Print Book Publishing:

While visiting a neighbouring West African nation some years ago, I told the leader of a group of writers that it was possible to get a book published in print at zero cost.

I could see the doubt on his face, as he challenged me to produce a printed copy of mine to show him.

A few months later, I’d ordered and received my first ever copies of my Print On Demand published book, and sent one across through a friend(Chris).

Chris later wrote me an email telling how many people who had seen my new book refused to believe it was written and print published by an African like them (me).

That reaction was a bit understandable due to the realities facing writers in these parts.

But at the same time it’s that kind of mental attitude that holds such people back from making timely and productive use of new opportunities as they appear.

2. Low Cost Browsing On Your PC Using A Blackberry Smartphone as A Tethered Modem:

Yesterday, while visiting the Ikeja Computer village, I got into a discussion with a young phone repairs apprentice.

When I told him my Blackberry had replaced my Starcomms wireless Internet modem for browsing on my laptop, he got interested, and began asking questions, including how much he could pay to learn how to do it from me.

As we chatted, one of the more experienced phone repairs engineers overheard and walked over to listen closer.

Suddenly he said “Oh, that idea of using a Blackberry as a modem is impossible. We’ve tried it and it does not work!

For some reason, the young apprentice ignored him, and went on to pay me the discounted “quick coaching” fee. Today I took him through the steps for setting up the smartphone for use as a modem.

And he saw that it worked. So much so that he’s decided to acquire a smartphone for use as a modem on his netbook.

That’s not all.

He also agreed to have his photo taken for use with an audio testimonial he provided.

It is also my intention to do a video interview in which I’ll ask him more detailed questions and also let him further share his impressions about how effective it is to use a Blackerry smartphone as a tethered modem on a PC.

I’ll be posting the video on this page via Youtube.

##############################

Final Words

If the young apprentice had listened to that nay sayer, he would have missed out on the above benefits.

And that’s why I believe a person who wishes to really excel in achieving her dream in life, should eliminate the word “Impossible” from her vocabulary.

That way when you encounter it, it would have little or no meaning.

And your dreams and goals would be safe from premature death!

You Alone Are Responsible For Your Fortunes

For many of us the past year brought us a mix of both good and maybe not-so-good fortunes.

I’m happy about certain things, and feeling unfulfilled about others. You most likely nurse similar feelings.

Take Responsibility For What Happens To You, Even When Someone Else Is To Blame

However, where many of us may differ is with respect to how willing we are to TAKE responsibility for anything that did not go the way we wanted last year.

And that’s why I’m writing this piece.

I believe it’s important to psychologically challenge ourselves to take responsibility for any failures we experience.
Just like we readily claim credit (and demand recognition) for successes we achieve :-)

And I suggest doing this even when you know that the intervention of a particular person for instance led to your failure in that area.

Doing so will keep you in a position of psychological control in matters relating to your personal development and progress.

Examples Of How Professional Sportspersons Frequently Take Responsibility

.

In long distance running for instance, it is not uncommon for athletes to accidentally trip or get tripped during a race.

When that happens, an athlete who gets tripped will often have two main options.

She’ll either:

A. get back quickly on to her feet and resume running to catch up with the others. (Some athletes who do this, even end up finishing among the top 3).

B. or she’ll stay down on the assumption that there’s no way to make up the lost ground.

However, even athletes who choose to quit, generally look beyond pointing accusing fingers at whoever it was that tripped them.

Instead, they set out to train themselves towards avoiding a similar misfortune in a future race.

In other words, the athletes generally choose to do what they can to improve their abilities to stay in control of what happens to them in a race.

The same mental attitude frequently guides professionals in other sports e.g Soccer.

From watching the English Premier League matches, one can easily see that players, teams and coaches always try to focus on the big picture.

And for top clubs like Man U, Man City and Chelsea for instance, that “big picture” is often winning the task of getting as many goals and match points as possible in subsequent matches.

They know they have an entire season to battle the other teams. So, even when they’re protesting the loss of a match to another team due to a goal they scored being wrongfully disallowed, Chelsea FC for instance will still go on to play their other scheduled matches .

At the press conference, the coach would likely lament the unfortunate incident.

But most times he would end by indicating that his team would “push forward” and try to recover the lost points in the next match(es).

Note that the coach would likely say the above, even if he expected the FA to reverse the referee’s decision and award the match to his team.

And that’s because professional sportspersons by the nature of their vocation, are conditioned to constantly work hard to control the outcome of every game they play.

So, when there’s a setback, they challenge themselves to explore new ways to recover the lost ground by doing better in the next outing.

What they rarely do is to sit down and moan or whine about how a particular unfortunate incident caused by another person(s), has cost them or limited their chances of doing well.

Yes, they talk about it, and sometimes even make formal complaints to relevant bodies.

But most of them never dwell on it or let it get them down.

Instead, they pick themselves back up with firm resolve to get back on top.

Final Words: Start Taking Responsibility For Your Failures, No Matter Who Caused Them!

A careful study of the careers of those we’ve come to recognise as long term champion sports-persons will reveal that the above point generally holds true for them.

In fact, it is often the key ingredient responsible for their success: I mean their habit of taking responsibility for any misfortune that befalls them, and working hard to overcome it – even when they know someone else caused it.

Anyone who successfully develops the ability to function in the above described manner, will become hard to outdo in any area of endeavor she’s engaged.

Why not adopt this approach in pursuing your goals for this year?

Do so, and you’ll be better off at the year’s end.

Believe me.

You’ll achieve amazing progress inspite of any setbacks you encounter.

And if you really appIy yourself, you’ll discover you’ve become virtually “unstoppable”. Those you relate with, will be unable to hide their “amazement”.

I know this, because I’ve experienced it in form of multiple emails and phonecalls asking me “How do you do it?”.

You have so much to gain, and nothing to lose by making that change from today!

You Need Conviction To Succeed!

Are you struggling to make progress towards a valued personal or business goal?

Does it feel like you don’t have enough of the things you need to succeed?

This article narrates a true story that illustrates the fact that sometimes NOTHING, other than a lack of adequate conviction, can hold you back, if you really set your mind to it.

You will learn how having a firm conviction, and acting on it with unwavering faith and enthusiasm can (magically) open doors leading to the opportunities you seek, until you achieve success.

Discovering The Business Of Webdesign As A Struggling Startup

When I first picked up the November 2003 issue of a glossy covered professional webdesign magazine from Rotciv’s table, little did I know that less than 3 months later, I would be earning substantial income providing formal webdesign services to clients.

It all began with a casual comment I made to Rotciv as I flipped through the mag’s thick pages, at the back of which the publishers had included a “How To” CDROM with sample designs, free software etc for use by readers.

He had accumulated multiple editions of the magazine in his office as the subscriptions arrived, but never gotten round to doing anything with them.

From reading through the one in my hand, I discovered that the tutorials, exercises and resources in it were authored by world class webdesign professionals in different areas of specialisation.

My interest was instantly aroused, because I knew that studying the techniques used by such highly paid experts, was bound to set one’s work apart.

Another reason I got interested was that my Excel-VB driven custom software development business was still in it’s infancy at the time. I was struggling to find prospects willing to consider my unusual spreadsheet automation service in my local market.

I have since successfully carved a unique marketplace niche for myself as a provider of custom Excel solutions, but back then, it was a hard sell.

In contrast to my Excel automation service, the business of webdesign was one that appealed to a large segment of the population.

Just thinking about it as I sat there, I knew I could find clients readily, if I could become reasonably proficient in webdesign. And that would mean badly needed income would come my way.

So, I said “You know Rotciv, I’m sure if I studied the collection you have here over a few weeks to a month, I’d be able to build a decent professional website for clients. Infact I’m sure I could build one for your Communications company.”

He replied saying “You really think you can learn enough within one month to be able to build a professional website, and even get paying clients?”

“I don’t see why not” I said. “These tutorials and the accompanying resource CDs are packed with easy-to-follow practical examples and illustrations. Any serious minded person who is not lazy, should have no problem doing so.”

And Rotciv responded:

“Well then, if you’re that convinced, why not go ahead and do it. The mags have been lying around for months anyway, and I’ve never really had the time to read them.

It would be great if you put them to some use – and even better if you can deliver a usable website for my company in the process.

That’s actually been on my mind a while, but I’ve not had the funds to do anything about it. Your idea gives me an opportunity to get something decent online for free!”

Learning Webdesign Via Self-Tutoring

And so between November and December 2003, I diligently spent every bit of free time I could find reading and practising tutorials from multiple issues of the webdesign magazine.

Sometimes I worked round the clock over the weekend for 48 consecutive hours. Most times, I stopped only to take my meals or have my bath. The rest of the time, I simply buried myself in the tutorials.

I gradually gained proficiency in the use of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash, as well as Adobe Photoshop.

Then I went online to learn about adding web contact forms powered by CGI scripts. I studied free tutorials provided by developers on how to upload my completed website files using FTP tools like CuteFTP etc. I also learnt to install CGI scripts on servers, use CHMODing to set file permissions etc.

Getting Ready To Find Clients

By the second week of January 2004, I felt reasonably convinced I knew enough to do a decent job of building a functional website for a paying client.

So I Googled to learn how to market my services to find my first few clients.

One article recommended offering to do a free job, to get some experience handling a real life project under my belt.

The idea appealed to me.

I had yet to work on a real life server on a paid hosting account. The closest I’d gone was in using Yahoo!’S free Geocities and some ad sponsored free hosting service providers. These had limitations in terms of what I could do, especially at the server end.

My First Client Projects

So I went out in search of a willing non-paying client, and found one in Ikeja under a week.

Two weeks later the completed site was up.

The client ran a professional UK exams coaching clinic. And he made weekly TV appearances on a local show as a consultant.

I suggested that he have the website’s URL appear on screen below his name whenever he came on air, so viewers would see it. He agreed.

Within a few weeks, he’d begun getting web form enquiries like I’d (enthusiastically) told him would happen. He gladly provided the testimonial I requested.

Armed with that, and with promotional flyers referring to the TV show featuring the first website I’d built, I went hunting for paid clients.

As I searched, I still made out time to study more to improve my new skills. I already saw aspects of the work I’d done on the first website, that I needed to improve on.

Rotciv had become quite enthused about getting his own site up as well, by this time. However he chose to first test my work on his Geocities free hosting account.

Like I did for my first project, I again used an adapted version of Michel Fortin’s webdesign and content copywriting questionnaire to extract the essential information I needed from Rotciv. Again, things went well.

Working in this manner would later prove quite effective in delivering to the client’s satisfaction, while avoiding the dreaded scope creep :-)

By mid february, I won two projects – each for N100,000.00 (about $800 USD at the time).

A Setback: I Lose Access To The Laptop I Borrowed

All this while, I’d been using a borrowed laptop, just like the magazines I’d been studying.

Unfortunately, about one week after I began work on both projects, the laptop’s owner demanded for its return!

I was devastated that despite my appeals, he did not budge. But after thinking it over, I became convinced that I could find an alternative.

One of my two new clients was a PC assembly and repairs service provider. I told him the challenge I was facing, and proposed that he use my remaining balance of N50,000.00 to build me a desktop PC I could use to finish his website.

He agreed, and I went on to finish both jobs – using my newly built PC!

Before the end of 2004, I successfully won and completed another two projects.

And I was also able to put up my own first website (on Geocities), for marketing my Excel software.

Once again, my demonstrated enthusiasm, conviction and self-confidence won over one of my webdesign clients. And he hired me to build a custom Excel application for his company.

At that point, I “tasted blood”!

I immediately began exploring ways to use my website to cost effectively find buyers for my Excel solutions.

Today, my conviction and persistence has helped me establish a tested and proven Web Marketing System to cost-effectively promote my work.

This has repeatedly helped me win buyers for my Excel-VB software and other products and services I offer.

Final Words: A Firm Conviction Can Save You!

I’ve definitely come a long way since that fateful day in November 2003. Without a firm conviction about my ideas, and my abilities, I would probably never have made it this far.

No one I knew could really vouch for me in any way back then. They had yet to see me do those things to be sure themselves.

I alone knew what I was capable of.

Sometimes that’s all you need to make things happen for you i.e a firm conviction that you can do it!

In my case it was ALL I had at the time I was starting out. I had no money, and no computer!

Today, many who know me readily vouch for me. Some even give their unsolicited endorsements and recommendations in professional business circles we belong e.g LinkedIn.com.

Without my acting persistently based on my convictions over the past years, none of that would be happening today.

Adopt a similar approach as you work towards achieving your own valued goals, and you’ll be amazed at the results you get!

Paying Tribute To 5 Experts Who Made Me

Note: This article is dedicated to the memory of the late – great – Zig Ziglar.

The list below includes experts whose ideas have influenced my development and progress, in a significantly positive way since 2001. It’s not exhaustive, and so I’ll likely do a sequel at a later date.

Why Am I Writing This Now?

I think it’s been about three years since I learnt of Jim Rohn’s passing. I felt bad that I never paid him tribute for the inspiration and education I got from reading his works. So, when Tom Ziglar announced that Zig had passed on, I resolved to write this piece, BEFORE all those I wanted to put on it passed on!

But no. The purpose is not to draw attention to myself.

That’s not how I’m wired. In fact, that’s why I’ve not really bothered to trim the length to make it more “appealing” to more people who likely prefer to read short (700 word) articles.

Sorry, if this is too long for you, but I have a lot to say about the great people I’ve mentioned here :-)

More seriously though, I’m writing this to tell others who – like me – are following in these experts’ footsteps, why they must NEVER stop doing what they are doing.

The road to becoming a “meaningful specific” (thanks to Zig!) can sometimes be hard and lonely. Achieving name recognition and relevance is unlikely to come easy. When you’re in the trenches, all muddied and bruised, it can be difficult to imagine anyone would be inspired by what you say or write.

Yet the irony of life – as Jim Rohn frequently pointed out – is that such suffering is what brings out the best in us. “It forces the human spirit to grow” to paraphrase Jim.

So when we share the wisdom from our tough experiences, others will often find them profoundly impactful. And they would be eager to read or hear more!

That’s why I’m writing this piece now.

To let you know that by continuing your work and never giving up, you’ll be helping others. The way the following experts helped me by doing the same thing!

5 Experts Who Help(ed) Me Achieve My Goals

1. Zig Ziglar – www.zigziglar.com

I read only two of Zig’s books: See You At The Top. And Over The Top.

Both made a tremendous impact on my thinking. I fully imbibed the philosophies advocated by Zig. To the extent that I quoted from him in a management research paper I published and presented at the Centre for Management Development. Later on, hungry for more, I subscribed to his online newsletter.

Zig lived what he preached in many ways. His kids are living proof of that. Tom Ziglar, for instance, is the closest to a case of re-incarnation I have ever come close to believing.

Zig seems to have successfully “transferred himself” into Tom. I personally get the feeling from reading the email broadcasts he sends out even now, that Zig is still there, somewhere, speaking through him.

It’s proof that Zig’s coached his kids well – effectively setting an example on successful parenting for the rest of us to follow. It’s not just about our lives, but the lives we help our children to create for themselves.

As his fellow Americans would say: Way to go Zig!

2. Burt Dubin – www.burtdubin.com

I’ve not put Burt on this list because I represent him in Africa, or due to my direct relationship with him.

Anyone who has read my writing, will see clearly that long before 2011, when we came together, I have often referred to him by way of quotes and excerpts from his works.

That was how compelling I found Burt’s wisdom. He is renowned as a mentor of paid international speakers. But as I have said to him, what he gives to people is MUCH more than that. Burt helps you make the most of who you are.

What I find most amazing is that if you apply yourself, just reading and applying his written ideas WILL make you achieve this outcome!

I know because I have done just that over the years. Most of the marketing strategies I have used to create a unique income generating niche for myself in a very difficult business environment were adapted from reading Burt’s ideas.

I have no apologies for listing Burt here.

His ideas, in my experience, transcend geographical and economic boundaries. They work ANYWHERE a person willing to diligently apply them can be found. And he’s stuck around – just like the others listed here – for quite some time, to the benefit of many…like me.

3. James R. Cook (Author of The Startup Entrepreneur– New York Times Best Seller)

Strange is what I would call my obsession with James Cook.

I have never even seen a picture of him, or read any other piece of writing by him. Just this one book he wrote – and that I bought in 2001, makes him a strong presence in my list of experts whose ideas helped me get where I am today.

Yet, when a journalist asked me what book I would recommend for a person starting out in business back in May 2012, I readily recommended James Cook’s book. I call that book “The Missing Chapters In Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich”. I’ve referred to him many times in my writing.

And I always emphasise that despite being written by an American who succeeded in business in America, the ideas in the book WILL help ANY diligent entrepreneur in an environment as harsh as mine.

To show how useful I found the book, today (years after losing my only copy), I can literally recall paragraphs from different pages of James’ book by heart.

I must have read that book from cover to cover, at least 10 times. Honestly! During my darkest periods as a startup, I got valuable guidance from the practical advice and instructive anecdotes in Mr. Cook’s book.

For that I am truly grateful to James R. Cook.

4. Jim Rohn – www.jimrohn.com

The late business philosopher is a legend in my estimation.

Up till now on Facebook, the quotes turned out on his page continue to resonate with me. I am constantly finding meaning in the messages contained in Jim’s books and on his website. Just like it happened with the other experts, most of his words simply got cemented into my consciousness.

I can regurgitate chunks of his writing that – in moments of adversity – so captivated my imagination with their relevance, that I memorised them.

Many who have related with me in person – friends, relatives and clients will confirm this.

When it comes to Jim, Burt, and James, you may not need to look for the book or article if you have me around.

Except I’ve never read it before. No exaggeration.

5. Michel Fortin – www.successdoctor.com

Now this man I discovered through his wildly popular eBook titled “Ten Commandments of Power Positioning”.

After Burt Dubin, I would say Fortin’s work – especially the voluminous eBook mentioned above – really helped me hit the ground running as a service provider back in January 2002.

My self-marketing materials were prepared based on diligent application of the concepts of Power Positioning and Top Of Mind Awareness described in his eBook.

From choosing the name of my company, the logo, tag lines, to my business cards etc. All of it was done with constant reference to that eBook.

And I have been so impressed with the results I’ve gotten from applying Fortin’s ideas. So much so, that I tell EVERY Web Marketing client I work with, to read that eBook at least twice, and then put the ideas s/he gets to immediate and consistent use.

Don’t STOP: Someone Out There Needs YOU To Keep Going!

The experts I acknowledge above, through their writing, gave me the education, and inspiration to keep going until I established my own momentum.

It was hard to keep up with them over the years though, as I struggled to establish myself in the harsh business environment of my society.

At one time, when I lacked the means to keep renewing it, I had to let my personal domain tksola.com (the email with which I subscribed to most of these experts’ mailing lists) expire.

As a result, I stopped receiving most of their mailings.

Two years ago, I revived the domain (and email address) when I re-launched my Speaking Service.

During those tough periods, I found it easy to keep going in spite of myriad challenges and setbacks, just from knowing that the experts listed above never stopped.

If they had, I would probably not have found (or re-discovered) them or their works to benefit from.

And as I’ve “kept on keeping on”(to paraphrase Burt Dubin) over the years, email and phone conversations with my readers (some have become customers), have revealed to me, that some people are depending on me NOT to stop as well!

They value what I am doing so much, that they talk about me to others. The latter visit my website and signup as well – stating “Referred by a friend” in the “How did you find this website field” on each of my website request forms.

That’s why it’s important NEVER to think lowly of yourself – or your efforts to achieve a worthwhile outcome. It may seem hard to believe, judging from the realities surrounding you at any point in time.

Know, however, that what you’re doing matters to some person(s) out there.

Keep going and you’ll give them a stab at success through learning from you. One day, one or more of them may just go out of her way to acknowledge you. Like I’m doing here for the above experts.

Final Words: See You At The Top!

I’ve come a long way since those early startup years. And I’ve gained a lot of experience and exposure as an entrepreneur, as well as content publisher and online marketer.

But without the foundation I built using the ideas I gleaned from the writings of the experts mentioned above, I may never have progressed the way I have.

I’m sure most – if not all – the above listed experts (with the possible exception of Burt) probably never even knew I existed all these years.

And that is the beauty of it all. You being able to impact other people who need help, from your own corner of the world. Without needing to know or meet them in person.

That’s what the late – great – Zig Ziglar did for me. So did Jim Rohn and the others listed above.

Most importantly, I’m already getting proof that I’m making a difference for others through my work.

I’m sure you know – from reading the above – that the same thing can happen to you too.

So, NEVER give up. NEVER stop.

No matter what anyone says. No matter who says it. Keep On Keeping On!

And soon, you’ll experience the fulfillment that comes from making the most of yourself!
