PII 166: Had No Parents, No Education. Was Stubborn, Disobedient. But He Had Qualities and Inspirations to Succeed – Bob Marley’s True Life Story

“Don’t look sad and forsaken. When one door is closed. don’t you know another is open?” – Bob Marley, COMING IN FROM THE CLOUD

Bob (Robert Nesta) Marley’s life story is an excellent example of a real grass to grace journey to success.

Bob was born to a black teenage village girl (17 year old) named Cedella – who got impregnated by Captain Narval Marley – a middle aged British soldier well past fifty years of age at the time.

In 1944, Narval incurred the wrath of his family by taking the honorable and bold step of marrying Cedella – resulting in his getting disinherited from the entire family wealth.

Undaunted Narval took Bob from Cedella and secretly fostered him away to one Mrs. Greg at Heywood Street, after which he left,  never to be seen or heard from again.

It was years later by a rare stroke of luck that the child and his mother were reunited when the latter was led to Mrs. Greg’s foster home. There she reclaimed Bob.

But things were not really going well for Cedella, who was barely making a living in the slums of Western Kingston. This made it difficult for her to really give Bob the care and attention needed by a child of his age. He was forced to find his own way.

The harsh circumstances of his early growing up years shaped him into the man he would become.

During an interview, Bob recalled  as follows:

“I grew stubborn, you know. Grew up without  mother and father. No parents to have an influence upon me. I just grew up in the ghetto with the rebellious youths. Stubborn, obeyed no one. But we had qualities and were good to one another. I had no education, but I had inspirations.”

His mother, Cedella had migrated to Delaware in the United States, leaving Bob to become more or less a rolling stone, living on the streets without a home to call his own.

But even in the rough streets, there was good to be found and had.

One example was Rita Anderson, who was one of those that treated Bob nice. She was good to him and loved him so much – to the extent that she actually secretly moved him into her room in the No. 18 Greenwich Park home she lived with her aunt at Kingston.

The inevitable eventually happened, as the aunty discovered what she had been doing – and promptly threw them out.

But they stuck together. Their love was that strong – so that they got married on February 10, 1966.

Then they persisted together, defying all the adversity they encountered, along with Bob’s band members – The Wailers – till they arrived at the pinnacle of world music success.

Rita  Marley would lead the band’s chorus girls right until Bob passed away on May 111, 1981.

At the risk of stating the obvious, Bob Marley achieve legendary greatness despite spending less than 40 years on earth – having started out in life as a poor, disadvantaged child with no parents, or education.

What an inspirational life he lived!

Bob Marley’s achievement within the short time he spent on earth is one that leaves the rest of us NO ROOM to make excuses for any failures we record.

PII 161: You Need to be a Leader in Thought and Action [True Story: How I Created & Sold my “Employee Morale Gauge Quiz” to Local and International Buyers]

Many of my followers on this blog may not be aware of this, but I started out offering speaking and training services for career persons in paid employment ALONGSIDE my efforts to develop Farm Business Support Solutions for Farm CEOs. Over time I let the market’s response teach me which one to focus on MORE – hence my emphasis today, on serving Farm Business Owners in particular, and others in general.

In this issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, I discuss a tool I developed while still in paid employment, which I’ve since used to serve clients in both above mentioned markets, earning name/brand recognition, as well as income in the process. Just like other business owners, Farm CEOs often have to hire employees. This tool can help you get the best possible results from them, if used right. Read on to learn more.

In this issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, I discuss a tool I developed while still in paid employment, which I’ve since used to serve clients in both above mentioned markets, earning name/brand recognition, as well as income in the process. Just like other business owners, Farm CEOs often have to hire employees. This tool can help you get the best possible results from them, if used right. Read on to learn more.

I conceived and developed my popular Employee Morale Gauge (a 10 item attitudinal survey based) quiz in 1999, while working as a young brewer/manager in Guinness Nigeria PLC.

It was the product of many months of deep thinking driven by my need to understand what made employees adopt seemingly negative (or nonchalant) attitudes they displayed towards their jobs.

Back then as an employee, I was a self-motivated achiever who constantly sought ways to improve myself in order to deliver better workplace performances.

The insights I gained equipped me to achieve several notable successes in the workplace (especially in leading others to get important work done), leading to senior management career advancement opportunities, less than 7 years after I joined the company as a Graduate Management Trainee (read details on the web based version of my resume on LinkedIn.com – click to view in a new window or download my PDF resume).

After he got wind of yet another career advancement opportunity that had yet again been awarded to me, in 1998, an older colleague who joined the company over a decade before me, asked: “Tayo, what is your secret”.

At the time I had not really articulated and distilled the insights I’d gained. So I just told him, I put in my best at all time.

But his question got me thinking and I began to string my thoughts together to arrive at a better, more useful answer. In the process, I came to the realization that many employees I interacted with in the company, and elsewhere, did not share a similar passion to mine.

The insights I gained helped me conceive the Employee Moral Gauge quiz to identify identify/measure how employees felt about their jobs, with a view to using the results to get them to do more, and do so happily.

You see, as an employee, I LOVED to challenge myself to make the best of whatever workplace situation I found myself in.

Not everyone likes that. Not everyone likes to be a problem solver.

Some people want the problems sorted out before they have to be there. They just want to show up and get told what to do, so they can do it, get out and get paid at the end of the month.

And that’s not bad. But such persons must also not expect to be made champions in the workplace, if they continue with such an attitude.

The irony is that such people will often turn around and complain when they get passed over, for career advancement opportunities, in favour of a self-driven achiever who makes the best of what s/he is given at all times!!!

Most of them often gave excuses and complaints for being unwilling to put their hearts and souls into work like they saw me do.

My informal conversations with them revealed a common theme – they felt the employer failed to provide working conditions they considered ideal.

Many times however what they told me they expected made little practical sense. And if I, as a fellow employee felt that way about their expectations, it was no surprise that the company’s management simply did not bother.

[Now here’s a bit of irony: Some of the people who fail to put in their best as employees, post-retirement, when running their own companies, are often the kind who demand greater effort from their own employees – the kind they refused to give to their own employers!]

The smart employer/manager/leader will know how to create workplace conditions that:

1. Continually inspire self-driven high achieving employees to keep putting in their best at work

2. Allow little or no room for naughty employees to get away with sloth, indifference or any other negative attitudes – and instead get them to deliver the results s/he is paying them for.

One instrument that can help employers/leaders accurately determine what they need to do to achieve the above, and more, is my 10 item Employee Moral Gauge Quiz.

Creating Awareness About my Quiz to Organizational Leaders – How It All Began

Having placed 5th (due to a mishap I caused myself) at the National Finals of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s Young Manager’s competition 2 years earlier (1997) where I presented a paper based on my real life workplace projects in the brewery titled “Statistical Process Control & Target Setting”, I wrote a management paper, to present my quiz to a formal audience.

Unfortunately, my 1999 paper failed to win the interest of judges at the competition, so I failed to go beyond the zonal competition.

But I was undaunted by that rejection of my new paper.

Indeed I was convinced that my paper and the tool I’d conceived had real potential for application in accurately evaluating employee morale.

So I chose to self-publish it for use in starting up my entrepreneurial journey.

In 2007, I published it online for the first time (on my flagship website – spontaneousdevelopmentdotcom) – in article format, ending with a reproduction of the questionnaire, with guidelines for its use.

Soon after, I published it on my Ezinearticles.com article marketing profile.

A lot of exciting benefits have since accrued to me, such as the following:

1. The article rapidly got lots of views and boosted my visibility in search engines, leading to visits to my website, and some enquiries about the questionnaire. But this was before I began aiming to sell my stuff online. I was not yet aware that I could do so. Instead I was focused on pavement pounding, looking for clients to hire me face to face.

2. India’s ICFAI university contacted me asking if I was the original author of the article and the questionnaire tool.

It took telling them repeatedly – as they asked repeatedly – that I was indeed the original owner of the intellectual work, before they went ahead to inform me that they wished to publish it in their journal titled “Employee Morale: Concepts and Cases”.

I never did get the copy of the journal that was promised. But they let me know the journal was published in their online store, with my paper listed as one of the entries. Click here.

3. I earned income selling the paper for $35 US Dollars on an author agency website (they took a commission from the earnings). My buyers were HR Managers and persons in similar roles.

4. Some websites have published syndicated versions of the paper – and some business organizations even adopted it for formal use:

Now, I’m pleased they chose to use my paper in serving their website visitors…

However, it would have been better, if they had respected the rules for republishing from my Ezinearticles.com profile, which include leaving my byline at the end of the piece, so readers can read and click links to learn more about me.

5. The CEO of a medium sized manufacturing client company I worked for in 2008 paid me to administer the Employee Morale Gauge Quiz to his factory employees, as part of the implementation of a Best Operating Process Management System project he hired me to implement.

I could not help but notice how eagerly he read through the ratings and comments on each (anonymously filled) form to get an idea of how the staff “felt” about working in his company.

What I Want You to Take Away…

My purpose for sharing the above is not to brag.

Far from it.

Those who follow my writing on this blog most likely will have noticed that I share my experience based achievements mainly to inform, educate, inspire and entertain my target audience, towards helping them IMPROVE themselves to do what they do better.

In particular I am keen to help as many as are willing WAKE UP to the realization that EVERY ONE of us has genius within him/her. You just need to discover what yours is, so that you can share it with the world.

When you do so, you manifest the full potential embedded in you by the Creator, and in the process BLESS others, thereby making the world better than it would have been, if you had NOT done it.

The story about how I conceived my quiz and wrote a paper to explain how to use it, after which I promoted it through as many channels as I could think of, proves that anything is possible, if one is willing to believe, and take action based on that belief.

My message to you therefore is that YOU NEED TO find your own genius, and believe enough in yourself to use it to meet a need in the world.

Whatever your current job, vocation or profession is, you can dig deep, think hard to create/innovate/invent new or better ways of doing what you do. Aim to be a leader in thought as well as action.

Resolve to constantly challenge yourself to generate new ideas that open doors for new levels of achievement to be reached.

Never accept to be one of the crowd. Always aim to make impact and set yourself apart.

I realized that whatever solution I settled upon would need to address all of them, if it was to be successful.

Most importantly, I wanted the solution to be one that ANY INDIVIDUAL could implement ON MY OWN as an individual, without need to depend on others.

LEARN COUNTING FROM 1 TO 1,000 IN YORUBA LANGUAGE USING THIS CUSTOM MENU DRIVEN SPREADSHEET APP [With Optional MP3 Audio files]

6 months ago, I began toying with the idea of creating a spreadsheet application to help my daughters better understand how to count in our native Yoruba language.

Just yesterday, I published a new blog recommending the article titled “College is Dying, Design Your Own Education – by Jonny of Hackernoon.com”. In it, I linked to 3 other write-ups from several years earlier (two of them – one of which is a 62 page White Paper – written by me) on the same theme.

My eyes were opened to this problem through reading and listening to VISIONARY THINKERS like Robert Kiyosaki (author of If You Want to be Rich and Happy, Don’t Go to School and Why A Students Work for C Students and Why B Students Work for the Government) and Sir Ken Robinson (TEDx talk titled Schools Kill Creativity).

It goes without saying that OUR numbers are growing i.e. those of us who SEE the harsh reality and are unafraid to say what others also SEE but are too scared to say or admit.

Like it or not, you – as a parent, teacher, or policy maker – will at some point (if you are yet to) come to ACCEPT that things need to change completely.

Our so called “education systems” no longer work well enough to support our individual societies.

We need to overhaul them and adopt a new system that is tried and tested. One which requires education to be DECENTRALIZED and customized to suit each child’s peculiar needs.

So much reinventing needs to be done – and societies that fail to make the needed changes WILL be left FAR behind by others that do!

It’s that simple.

Many of us use spreadsheets in our personal and work lives. But most of us NEVER consider the dangers of doing so, in the routine data handling and report generation we do for often serious (especially financial) purposes in various areas of endeavour.

Below is a paraphrased excerpt from my 4,000 word case study paper, which highlights the potential dangers of using MS Excel.

“Software automation can make the process of feed formulation less tasking and more reliable in terms of accuracy, compared to the error. But feed formulation software tend to be pricey…

In addition, some – due to legal requirements – limit ingredient types usable…

That’s why some farmers now adopt manual Excel platforms developed by researchers/extension specialists. But using MS Excel MANUALLY for a serious (and sensitive) task like feed formulation requires sound Excel user skills.

Over 2 and a half decades of developing and implementing custom automated spreadsheet solutions driven by code, while supporting business users locally and internationally (via www.tayosolagbade.com), have exposed me to the shocking FACT that many serious errors go undetected DAILY when people use spreadsheets manually!

The above web contact form submission is just one of many hundreds, I have received for well over a decade, since I began using the web. And especially since 2013, when I focused my efforts on generating sales leads for solutions I offer primarily from the Internet.

That enquiry was sent in on the 13th of January. However, I did NOT see/respond to it, until the 1st of February (last week). In other words, it took me over 2 weeks to get back to him.

Definitely not an ideal way to handle sales enquiries, and for those who know me, it is very out of character. However, I had no way of knowing he had made the enquiry, because his was one of those affected by the yet-unexplained disabling of email delivery from the script handling web contact forms on tayosolagbade.com

I mentioned in a previous newsletter that this has been happening for about 4 months now, making me unaware of over 30 enquiries sent to me using my web contact forms. Only an accidental incident led to my discovery of the submissions.

I have since begun implementing the alternative system I’ve thought up, to ensure I no longer have to worry about missing enquiries like this one.

But I mention this particular gentleman’s enquiry because it shows how a smart Web Marketing System (WMS) can motivate the prospect to:

  1. actively pursue you – sometimes using multiple alternative channels for answers about how s/he can buy from you
  2. patiently wait, to get response from you about what to do and how
  3. diligently go the extra mile to make the payment using whatever options you recommend.

Let me warn here that the intention is not to present the prospective buyer as one who is begging the seller for access to the latter’s solution.

Far from it.

Indeed the exact opposite is the case, and THAT is why the prospective buyer is often willing and able to act along the lines mentioned in a, b and c above.

In other words, a Web Marketing System makes those who fit your target audience profile SEE that you offer what they consider not only a valid solution to a need they have, but also that gaining access to you and your solution would obviously be in their best interests, because it would be apparent to them that YOU are an authentically passionate solution provider who delivers what s/he promises.

All of this can be inferred from a well developed and implemented Web Marketing System, without your saying a single word to a prospective buyer of ANY solution you offer.

An even better example of how a WMS can motivate prospects, can be seen in the case of the Malawi based Farm CEO who first emailed me on 23rd September 2018 but had to persist in exploring ways to send me payment – right up till 8th February 2019 (well over 4 months) last week!

Like many others before them, the Farm CEOs whose enquiries and conversations with me are reproduced above have experienced what it feels like, to be on the receiving end of my Web Marketing efforts.

It should be noted that the UK based Nigerian tried reaching me on phone, without success and that was why he settled for sending a web form enquiry.

Imagine therefore, if I had failed to provide a web contact form on my website?

Some people make that mistake. Others have the web contact form on their site, but it does not work.

I have used web forms for years and never let any of mine exist without functioning as they should. This new experience I’m having with non delivery of submissions to my email is one that I have studied and adopted an alternative solution to, so as to ensure I stop having delays in seeing messages sent to me.

The point I’m making therefore is that the foundation for a successful Web Marketing System is a fully functional response generating website.

Without it, you will most likely be pouring water you fetch, into a basket – to paraphrase a Yoruba saying which implies WASTING your efforts,

Having said all of the above, I now offer you the key message I want to pass on in this issue of my newsletter, which is that I have not been doing anything resembling the volume of writing I did from April 2013 to mid 2018, in a long while now.

Back then I wrote at least ONE new article daily, to promote various aspects of my multidisciplinary range of solutions. This was a well established routine that earned me great search engine visibility, generating leads/enquiries that I converted to sales.

Yet, despite the fact that I have not been doing as much active writing for marketing purposes online, as before, I have notched that enquiries have continued to come in for various solutions I offer.

If you have been following my writing over the years, you will have noticed that I share LOTS of true stories about sales conversations, and client support experiences I have quite often.

The reason I do that is to SHOW to my readers that far from being on an ego trip, with regard to what I offer online via www.tayosolagbade.com and other platforms I use, I am actually engaged in high profile money making interactions that add value to the lives of those I engage with.

This is why majority of those I relate with, both on and off the web, take me seriously. They SEE that I am the REAL DEAL, That I offer solutions that work, which I regularly, provide useful information and education about, to help them make up their minds.

Indeed, some of them found me because some other person who knew about me, but had up till then never needed to buy from me, recommended that they do so. Did you get that?

A person who has only heard of you, or followed you online, but neither met with you in the flesh or hired you him/herself,  recommends you so strongly to another person seeking a solution you offer, that the latter decides to buy from you…sometimes to the tune of over N50k!

It takes a rare kind of marketing effectiveness to get that sort of response from totals strangers. This is why I so boldly proclaim to any who will listen that a Web Marketing System, used the way I recommend is the ultimate, most cost effective and efficient marketing tool ANYONE can hope to have access to.

PII 151[TRUE STORY]: Use Relentless Web Marketing to Achieve Selling Success Inspite of Adversity – Bonus Commandment No. 1

Everything I share in this 10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success series is experience based wisdom – insights from the University of Hard Knocks (UHK) aka LIFE – and NOT textbook theory.

Far from being something I picked up from ANY textbook or classroom, it’s something I conceived by applying myself diligently to thinking about and intelligently, analyzing failures and successes I experienced over years of marketing my multidisciplinary range of products and services.

Then I distilled those experiences into a system that I could put to use practically, to solve the problem of finding prospects or potential clients/customers and making them buyers.

Let me begin by stating an important fact you need to keep in mind, if you want to succeed in winning profitable paying clients using MY Web Marketing System.

You may be doing your marketing, but it may not immediately give you the kind of results you want.

Then again, even when it is giving you the results you want, it may not continue to do so indefinitely, Typically, you may get to a point when it suddenly stops doing so as well as it used to, or even stops doing so completely – for a time.

As you can imagine, this would feel like a total disaster happening in your business life and you would wonder to yourself saying “I thought I had this all worked out before?”

The truth is sometimes the lessons we need to learn are not given to us at once.

Sometimes we need to learn in phases. Success happens in levels or to put it differently, there are different levels of success.

You may be at a certain level of success, and assume you’re home free or made, when in reality there are still other lessons you need to learn. By the time those lessons become necessary; some people wrongly assume that it’s something entirely negative.

The wrong mental attitude they’ve adopted makes them think they’re subfreezing needlessly.

But the truth is that such an experience will often be an opportunity for growth.

It will equip you to deal with adversity mentally.

So your success in marketing is unlikely to simply be continuous and uninterrupted. Nothing in life is ever that way.

What is more likely to happen is that you will experience what are called PEAKS and TROUGHS in your marketing.

The PEAKS are the periods when you rise high and you achieve and things are going well.

But there will always be TROUGHS in the life of an entrepreneur. Those are the down times you have. But those down times usually will come because there is something you don’t yet know, that you need to know to add to the body of knowledge, skills and abilities you have.

So you need to maintain a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) during those periods when things are slow, when things are not looking good, because those are the periods when the lessons are there to be harvested.

It is very important to have the right mindset towards your marketing, so that you can make the most of the experiences you are going to have, because nothing is ever going to happen in a straight line.

In life, you cannot avoid adversity. Instead it is how you respond to adversity that determines how you succeed in the long run.

So, you need to make adversity your friend. Embrace it. Jim Rohn said “Adversity forces the human spirit to grow”.

I agree.

I’m a product of adversity – and every day I remain a student of adversity, learning continually.

It’s NOT easy, and it can be very psychologically an emotionally challenging, BUT I have found that I always emerge wiser and stronger afterwards – and that makes it worthwhile!

Now, here’s why I had to give the above admonition as a preamble…

It’s because if you do not have mental attitude described above, it will be near impossible for you to achieve the kind of authentic success I will now go on to describe, based on a recent true story, about the use of my Web Marketing System (WMS) to attract and win over buyers.

Late last year – specifically, on the 27th Nov. 2018 (2 months ago today) – I got an email from a Cameroonian gentleman based in Ghana, regarding my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager Pre-Built Custom Automated Workbook software Application.

As he stated in the email screenshot below, he was looking to purchase the app in preparation for a Poultry Layer Farm Business Start-up in Ghana.

Now, he’d gotten my email address (tayo at tksola dot com) from the demonstration video I’d published in my YouTube channel, announcing the PFM app to potential buyers searching for solutions of that kind.

Members of my Web Marketing for CEOs club will recall I’ve mentioned several times, the need to create promotional materials that include what is called a Call To Action – CTA.

There MUST be a purpose to your marketing. Your CTA will be used to effect that purpose.

Be it videos, audios or written materials/resources, you must ensure your message ends with a specific request, offer or invitation to the target audience that comes into contact with it. Something they have to do that will draw them into your sales process – resulting in a “Sales Lead”.

In my videos, I usually recommend at the end that the viewer interested in knowing more send me an email via tayo at tksola dot com or that s/he call me on either +234-803-302-1263 (in Nigeria) or +229-66-122-136 (in Benin Republic).

This was what led the Farm CEO to send me the email he did.

In response, I told him to call me on my Nigeria line, so I could ask him a few questions (see email screenshot below).

I make this request as a strategy to screen out potential time wasters.

Put in place a screening system to help you make effective use of your time.

My experiences have taught me that some people (especially out here) can be mischievous. Some people may just call to chat you up for the sake of it, just to see what you will say.

I used to call people at my own expense in the past. But after I discovered that a growing number of those I was having to respond to were just curious, I realized I needed to modify my strategy.

Then in Nigeria, there are people who habitually engage in the silly practice of flashing – they call your line, let it right briefly, then end the call, so that YOU feel drawn to call back.

I used to do such call backs, but soon learned it was not worth my while. So I stopped and focused on identifying serious prospects by requesting they call me.

Since 2013, I’ve had enquirers call me, as a prerequisite for getting a response from me. I estimate that I close over 70% of sales opportunities that come to me through this process.

It actually makes them see that I take myself seriously, and that boosts my credibility + makes them come to me believing I can really help them.

My argument is this:

The products I sell are not very expensive, but they are not dirt cheap either. If you’re unwilling to spend the little amount that would enable you speak with me for 1 to 3 minutes on phone, I don’t see any reason why I should believe you are a serious potential buyer for my products that cost MANY times more!

Back to the Ghana based prospect:

When he got my email asking him to call me, he replied that he would and did so about a day later.

I still recall that I was visiting my parents in their home when the call came in. Less than 5 minutes later, we were done. He’d given me the answers to my questions and had asked me how much the app cost.

In responding, I offered to make him a time limited discount offer.

He however declined, noting that he was still looking around, trying to make up his mind, and that he could not make any concrete buying decision until January 2019.

I encouraged him to take his time and we ended the call.

By this time, in line with my recommended best practice for Web Marketing, I had 2 important items of information from him, which equipped me to safely and cost-effectively follow up with him:

a. His Mobile Number:

This I plugged into my Phone Contacts and used to find him on WhatsApp

b. His Email Address:

This I added to my General Contacts who I periodically forward copies of my published newsletter

As you can see, there is a method to my Web Marketing “madness” :-)

My approach helped me check and confirm reasonably, that the prospect was to be taken seriously. Then I stored the 2 key contact details I would need to take him/her to the next level in MY sales process, and proceeded to WAIT for ideas to come to me.

As the year approached its end, I sent out newsletter broadcasts via WhatsApp and email.

One carried the download link to an Excel-VB Greeting Card Workbook that I’d adapted from a source version downloaded from the web.

I’d embellished the workbook with code that got it to do more, plus a floating form featuring my photo, logo and clickable command buttons – including one that opened an offer page for discounted signup for membership of my MS Excel Heaven VB Programming Club.

Just before the year ended, I sent all my past enquirers a GIFT PDF copy of the 4,000 word Case Study I got paid 2,500 Euros to write, by a European Union Funded NGO based in Holland. There was also an offer of a special MP3 audio podcast series.

All of these were sent out using a clear no-strings-attached approach.

Recepients knew they were not being pressured to respond to anything, even as they took ownership of the FREE gif

[TIP] It is instructive to note, at this point, that I kept sending out my broadcasts, regardless of whether or not I got any responses. This is critical to successful selling. Marketing is the life blood of any business and it MUST happen continously, for the best chances of sales leads generation to be had.

I did some thinking, early in the New Year, and decided to send out a special FLASH PROMO offer of my Feed Formulation Bundle at 50% off with a deadline that expired midnight of the same day.

Why?

Because I knew most of those on my mailing list were Farm CEOs, or those aspiring, who had yet to purchase my Feed Formulation products.

Sometimes people tend to be ready at different times, to take up specific kinds of offers. Timing matters, in making offers.

When I sent out my offer, I got some responses – and was NOT surprised.

One of them was from the gentleman in Ghana…

The screenshots that follow below are self-explanatory, and show how I was able to successfully close THAT sale to him, using Guaranty Trust Bank’s Money Transfer (GTMT).

Another Selling Opportunity Opened Up…

In an interesting turn of events (which I’d actually thought could occur) he came back – see screenshot below – while still expecting his payment to reach me, to ask about the PFM app which he had originally reached out to me for!

You see, I’d offered him a different product (Ration Formulator software etc), which has a lower price tag, at a discount, to get my foot in the door, with the intention to them up sell the actual product he’d indicated interest t in to him.

Not surprisingly, he asked about THAT other product – the PFM – on his own.

This request from him gave me legitimate reason to then make him another offer, this time for the PFM.

Do you see now, why it always pays to keep an open and flexible mindset when marketing?

Never be too rigid in presenting your offers. Learn to watch the prospective buyer’s “body language” when you communicate with him/her. You can do this even when you are NOT physically with them. How they respond when you speak on phone, or even what they say in email replies or WhatsApp/Messenger chats can give you insights into how to get them to buy!

I’ve honed my selling instincts and skills in this regard for years and it has helped me get total strangers convinced enough to send me money from in and out of Africa, without EVER meeting me in person.

So this system I use, and recommend to you, works – if you know how to use it.

The first step is for you to ensure you have a solution that your target audience wants and which they will consider worthwhile AFTER you deliver it to them.

“I literally dream about shoes, all the time.

I live, sleep, eat, drink fashion.

It’s not something I separate. I’m like always designing.

Historically, both in ready to wear and in shoes and accessories, it has been men.

I’m kind of the new garde, which is “wait minute, why shouldn’t a woman know what a woman wants when it comes to footwear?”

I’m always telling young designers, who are very creative coming out of art schools:

“You’ve got to learn the business. In the world we live today, you can’t just sit in the corner and draw shoes, for example. You have to know how to market the shoes. You have to know how to sell the shoes. You have to know how to cost the shoes. You know…you don’t design into a vacuum.

To be an entrepreneur, you don’t have to be like myself – the LEAD entrepreneur.

You know, the people who work for me, they all have to be entrepreneurs. So it’s really a way of thinking. It’s an empowering way of thinking. It’s an accountability. It’s you can make a difference. It’s going to your job and not just thinking that you’re a cog in the wheel. It’s thinking like you could affect the wheel. You can innovate the wheel. You can make it a better wheel. That kind of thinking is so important for any type of job, any type of career – and especially design.

I think having my entrepreneurship background gave me that confidence that I could go out on a limb and innovate. “

PII 148: Commandment No. 10 – You Shall Constantly Equip Yourself to Tackle Negative Competition [10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success]

In this tenth and final commandment, I explain using several personal true stories and examples, how negativity from others – both those close to you, as well as people you may not even know or be consciously aware of – can cause potentially serious damage to you, in a way that could stop you from achieving the valued goal you set.

Dispense with any rose colored glasses through which you may be tempted to view the world. Some people, including those you love, may choose to make things difficult for you, as they observe your progress.

What you need to do is PREPARE yourself for that possible eventuality. Otherwise you could just end up getting derailed from achieving your dream.

PII 148: Commandment No. 10 – You Shall Constantly Equip Yourself to Tackle Negative Competition [10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success]

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to eliminate all the negative people from your life. Your mother or father, a business associate, a best friend or even your spouse might be a negative influence. And since any of these people have known you for years, they probably think of you in terms of your past experiences and not in terms of who you are today, or the person you can become.

The saying “A prophet has no honor in his own home” couldn’t be truer, Sometimes it’s easier to find support from a complete stranger. A stranger doesn’t carry preconceived notions about what you can or cannot do…everyone needs someone to believe in him or her, and those who are closest to you may not be the best people to fill that role.

The key is to find someone who does…Negativity works like poison in the bloodstream: If you give in to its power, it will weaken your confidence and kill your dream. Your goals are simply too important to let that happen.” – Cynthia Kersey, Author of UNSTOPPABLE 45 Powerful Stories of Perseverance and Triumph from People Just Like You
