In this article, I explain what drives me to keep using my writing to share my experience based knowledge, ideas and insights on various areas of life, and why doing the same thing can help you succeed in your chosen occupation, as well as in parenting your kids!
A lot of what I do in coaching young people, and my kids, is greatly
influenced by the knowledge and memory of the pains visited on me because I got VERY little in form of proactive preparation for the REAL WORLD of the society into which I was born…until it was almost too late.
Instead I’d been trained to focus of developing my academic genius almost
without regard for my other abilities and with little or no effort being
made by those who raised me to ALERT me to the shocking contradictions extant in Nigerian society.
And when they do begin their journey, I intend to be THERE, always ready to give them the needed support without making them dependent on me, until they can carry on by themselves.
In the recent photos taken during our 2016 Lagos Bar Beach New Year celebration outing, five of my kids appear I.e 2 girls (6 and 9 years old respectively), and 3 boys (the 2 older ones are
12 and 14 years old respectively…while the little man will clock 2 years in
April). Click here to see the photos in the article I wrote.
It is instructive to note, that one child – the eldest in fact – is missing from the photos.
In other words the kids are 6 in total. He is my first son – Fela, and is 16 years old.
He did not go on that outing with us because he had to join his mother to take one of the Cockerels sent to me by a client, as a gift to his maternal grandmother.
On pages 4 and 8 of the calendar, you’ll see Fela, in a pose with the others – excepting the little man (Tayo Solagbade Junior).
These kids are the ones who inspire me on the home front, to do what I do the way I do it, especially with regard to my Best Practice Parenting Advocacy.
You see, just like I am passionately driven to be the best father I can be to my kids, I also remain unequivocally committed to making the most of myself vocationally and professionally.
In this regard, I have found Burt Dubin’s work to be of especially great value to my socio-psychological development towards achievement of my valued goals.
Like I’ve told Burt many times, his words/writings have inspired me for over a decade: Since way back in 2000, when I discovered him – and his famous Speaking Success System – via a series of classified ads in Michael Angier’s Success Digest newsletter!
Many MANY times, over the years, I’ve re-read Burt’s words to keep myself motivated to continue despite the delays and setbacks I suffered in trying to achieve my goals.
For instance, when I relocated to Benin Republic on 1st April 2013, I used a quote I found in one of Burt’s write-ups, to stay focused on my goal, by putting up an image version of it on my website then hosted on my spontaneousdevelopment.com domain (which later became defunct at 9 years, in 2014).
That same quote is the one I’ve put up on the cover of the above linked calendar.
The inspiration I’ve derived from reading the works of accomplished experts like Burt Dubin, Napoleon Hill, Zig Ziglar, Les Brown, Robert Kiyosaki, Wole Soyinka and Jim Rohn, is what encourages me to keep doing my own writing, sharing my own ideas and stories, in the
hope that they might serve as useful and timely inspiration for some other person(s) when they need it.
I hope that what I’ve written here will make you give serious consideration to sharing your own ideas and stories for others – includind your kids – to learn from.
[UPDATE: VIDEO NOW LIVE – CLICK HERE]
In the second issue of this interview series, my guest was Burt Dubin, US based veteran mentor of some of the world’s highest paid speakers.
One of the points I noted in the introductory notes was that despite that fact that he is 91 years old, he remains as active as ever, especially as a mentor to speakers. In that regard, I pointed out that Efe Ohwofasa was/is being mentored by Burt Dubin himself!

This is sad, and it needs to STOP:
I am seeing LOTS of “broken” men and women on and off the web…!
Recognizable from their “panic-fueled” words and actions, these people are obviously allowing gloomy predictions from dooms-day forecasters, to make them adopt a NEGATIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE towards perceived impending hard socioeconomic times, and it saddens/pains me so much.
I wonder how, with all the religious beliefs we profess in an ALL powerful creator, we can so easily forget that with FAITH in HIM nothing can defeat us?
Too many people are allowing themselves to be led into the defeatist mindset that they should simply dig in and expect the worst in the New Year
What misguided sentiments, from the same people who claim to worship a God that can do ALL things!
If you really believe in the Creator, how come you so readily accept that the worst can happen to you – a believer! – because some people said so??!!
Negative thoughts and confessions can – and do -become self fulfilling prophesies. The fact that you cannot see the process does NOT mean it’s not happening. There are laws set by the Creator to guide occurrences in the spiritual universe, by rewarding each person according to the QUALITY of his/her thoughts.
Some people are actually working towards the above right now, from what I see them doing and saying!
The Creator I believe in is NOT a God of scarcity, but of unending abundance…but He only rewards those who ACT with faith to achieve their goals! – Tayo K. Solagbade
It is at times like these that TRUE believers are identified, and the pretenders exposed.
What many are doing and saying today makes me wonder if they have considered the kind of example they are setting for their kids.
In case they don’t know, it is a BAD one, and kids will be the worse off for it, because they will lack the right mental attitude to deal with hard times!
Instead of – for instance -squeezing the fun out of your life by going into “hibernation mode” via mindless cutting of your spending in ways that threathen your socio-psychological well being(!), why not challenge yourself to explore NEW and IMPROVED ways to boost your income/earnings???
Why not do the above while praying to YOUR Creator, that you claim to believe in, for the wisdom and insights to succeed with your bold plans???
Isn’t that what one who is the “child” of an OMNIPOTENT Creator would be expected to do???
I stopped being religious in 1989 (over 2 decades ago).
Instead I’ve over time developed myself spiritually to successfully connect with the Creator so as to make the most of myself in life, no matter my circumstances.
In that process I discovered the truth about why I must never make the mistake of confessing negatively anywhere, or at anytime.
That is why I will continue to be a source of information, education, encouragement and inspiration to ALL who need it, now and into the never ending future!!!
What about you?
Forget the Gloomy Economic Predictions! Your Success is 99% Within YOUR Control
You take it for granted, but your kids don’t have a clue about it – even though they WILL have to deal with the reality in future.
I’m talking about everything you have to do, to provide for them and/or to pursue your goals in life.
That includes the STREET SMARTNESS to move around in YOUR society, without getting lost, losing money or possessions…or worse, falling victim to fraudsters, scammers and the like.
You know how to do all that today, having grown up in society learning from your mistakes and those of others. But do your kids have the same competence?
Can you confidently let them go out of your home, ALONE, without worrying about them till they return?
If you said NO, then this article suggests what you can do to equip them to develop the competence that will give you THAT peace of mind!
Right. I doubt any of us found it easy.
Yet most of us rarely consider that our kids will one day have to find their own way in the real world.
Evidence of this is seen in the way we let them move around in chauffeured cars, or hired taxis etc. We think of what is involved too simplistically, from our perspectives as adults who have already mastered the process – and fail to put ourselves in the shoes of our kids.
They do not have the benefit of access to our reservoir of YEARS of experience based insights to tap from for decision making!
This is why I write my articles on Best Practice Parenting – to warn parents who may not be aware – of the need to take deliberate conscious steps to give their kids real world relevant exposure to, and experience of various aspects of life that they will eventually have to deal with.
As usual I practice what I preach. Like I always say, no matter how successful you become in life, the success you achieve as a parent will ALWAYS be the most important success of all. Fail as a parent, then you’ve failed as a person – this is my belief.
It was meant to give them yet another dimension of real world relevant education I’ve been taking them through in their Personal Achievement Coaching.
We’d talked about going to the beach for weeks before then. But each time something always happened to make us shelve the idea.
However, my 2 daughters, who had no conscious recollection of all the previous family outings we’d had on the beach (because they had been too young back then) remained insistent.
That morning, after initially telling them I needed to rest, I finally gave in and we began cleaning up the house.
One big concern had been what to do about the 4 remaining Cockerels (from the 9 delivered to us as part-payment by a client who signed up for my Sales and Marketing Coaching program on New Year’s day), which needed to be delivered to buyers.
Eventually we found a way to pack them into one of the rooms in a large wooden box.
Then we cooked a large quantity of jollof rice, with cubed meat, and soon got on our way.
None of the kids had ever ridden on the famous Lagos BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses. So when I announced we would be going to Victoria Island and back via the BRTs, they were excited.
I felt it was important to let them compare traveling via BRT with going in private car as well as the rickety local transport buses.
Apart from discovering that the BRTs were more spacious, more comfortable, and FASTER, the kids were shocked to find (when buying their tickets) that the BRTs were 50% cheaper!
For instance, the local CMS bus conductor we spoke with on our way to the BRT terminal had told us the fee was N300 per head. We ended up paying only N150 [NB: Official exchange rate is N200 to $1 USD, but black market is about N270 to $1 USD]
This was an important lesson I hammered into their heads i.e. the fact that the benefits superior comfort and speed do NOT necessarily have to come at a higher cost!
Indeed, as most people who work on the Island will confirm, many car owners find it makes more sense to go via BRT and leave their cars at home. Not only do they expend less money, they also save precious energy and time too from driving their own cars in the troublesome Lagos traffic – which NEVER affects the BRTs, since the latter have their own lanes!
Below: It’s NOT easy to take steady shots while in a fast moving BRT bus…so I ended up with several blurred images. What I offer below are the best I could salvage from the lot. I must say though that I really missed my Blackberry 9015 Pearl camera. In this kind of situation, it NEVER failed me!
Er…we tried HARD to ignore the “messy” environs during our short stop over here – I was to their right, after easing myself. We spent some time watching people get on the speed boats behind us get transported to the rig. One of the boat’s engines stalled just before we left, and another was dispatched to help out.
I took that opportunity to tell my kids about my trip across the Atlantic Ocean in 1999, on my way back from Cameroon’s Douala. It was past midnight and our motor boat engine propeller got caught in a mass of water hyacinth right in the middle of the sea. It took the boat man over 1 hour to get it free, before we could continue our 12 hour journey to Oron in Nigeria. During that time, I said all sorts of prayers…lol! Click here to read the full story.
A few thoughts crossed my mind while I was in there e.g. where did the “flushed” stuff go?
The arrangement I saw there suggested it all went into the Lagoon…but I refuse(d) to believe that!
What do you think….???
Trust kids – by the time I came out, THAT was the first thing they asked me: “Tayo, where does all the poo poo go?“
My answer: “I haven’t the slightest clue!”…then we all burst out laughing, because we were ALL thinking the same thing….:-))
Is someone from Lagos state government reading this?
If YES, it would not be a bad idea if you guys check out that public toilet facility and ensure what’s happening there is not something that could cause a major health problem.
This is after all the “Centre of Excellence!”
Indeed the last time I was on the beach, with the family was back in December 2011.
A LOT has changed since then, especially due to the efforts made by the government to control the flooding from the sea, which sometimes covered the roads and even swallowed the lower floors of buildings close tot he beach.
As a result, the beach we knew was no longer accessible, having been sealed off using a barrier setup by the construction company engaged to put in the reinforcements to check the waves and erect structures on various parts.
The kids were disappointed.
We were forced to join other families who had resigned themselves to playing on the narrow strip of concrete left accessible.
After they gobbled up the jollof rice (including half of mine!) the kids went for ice creams, drinks, horse riding (our smallest member VERY reluctantly!), till night fell.
The girls were the main agitators all through that outing: they wanted a horse ride, so I let them have it. Pity the photos of them actually riding away turned out blurred (Once again, I miss my Pearl 9105 camera).
They kept asking for one treat or the other, and I made a point of letting them have it, to the intermittent consternation of the boys :-))
Then we began strolling around the whole place, taking photos, chatting, just to get some variety. Like I said, we just had to make the best of what we had…lol!
NB: The beach was to our left…notice the fence
BELOW: Tayo Solagbade Junior – Protesting vigorously and with real terror in his eyes, as he was being put on the horse he’d just watched his sisters dismount from! He had the same reaction to the Cockerels we brought home until they were down to the last one, at which point he got bold enough actually touch it…!
The rest of the clan have a nickname they coined for him which I’m NOT at liberty to share here. Here he is after we finally got him to stay long enough on the horse to have his photo taken (phew!)
By 7.30p.m, the girls were still saying “let’s wait a little longer” when I reminded them the last BRT would leave by 8p.m – meaning we would have to take the local buses if we were late.
That got their attention: none of them wanted to go back in the small, rickety, cramped buses.
We hired a Keke Marwa (commercial tricycle) to take us back to the TBS (Tafawa Balewa Square) BRT terminal, and boarded a BRT back to our locality.
The kids were especially excited on mounting this return bus because it was one of the new ones, and the air conditioning as well as on board TV was still fully functional.
They were glued to the TV for most of the trip, as different content flashed across its screen – including music videos, promos, news, interview etc.
Any doubts I had that they understood the news reports in particular were however cleared when – after we got back home – I heard them tell their mom about the report about a lady who got her finger cut off by robbers who wanted her gold ring!
A good example was the truth about how to move around safely in the real world of our society, and what to look for before asking for directions; who to ask for directions; where to ask for directions etc.
These may seem obvious to us as adults, but in a place like Lagos, our kids in their innocence will rarely realize asking questions in the wrong manner can make dubious characters focus on you as a potential victim or target!
School cannot teach them that.
Neither can reading of books.
They simply need to go out and DO IT.
What better way for them to do so, than with their own parent(s)!
PS: When we eventually relocate to Benin Republic’s Cotonou, we’ll be doing something similar, to get the kids familiar with moving around in THAT society.
[NB: This is a transcript of my New Year audio message]
This is Tayo Solagbade, and I want to challenge your thoughts a bit in this short audio clip I’m doing, with regard to the issue of jobs availability, unemployment locally in Nigeria, in Africa, and loss of jobs by people who are Africans based abroad in diaspora, and who are being probably sent home, losing their jobs and having to return home after decades working overseas.
All of those theories…that’s why I’m doing this audio:
I want to pass a message to the individual who fits any of those descriptions…
Maybe you’re somebody locally in Nigeria or Africa who cannot find a job, lost your job, are looking for a new job, or a better job…
Or you’re somebody who has been abroad, and you’ve lost your job, cannot find a job, are looking for a job…
Wherever you may be operating from or may have been operating from, I just want to tell you something:
I am not God – of course! – and I am NOT a magician.
But I am telling you this because it is the way I have lived my life, and I’ve seen the results every day: My life is a miracle, and my life is proof that the Creator will reward those who put in the effort to make themselves better, with faith and persistence.
So I want to tell you, that no matter what anybody is writing in the papers, on the Internet, or saying on radio or TV, the truth is that YOU are the master of the ship of YOUR life!
This is NOT a motivational talk. I am going to give you specific ideas you should take and apply in your life, if you know you don’t want to be one of those sorry statistics they’re gonna reel out at the end of the year saying "Oh it was a rough and tough year for people".
The truth of the matter is this: Because you are a child of God, YOU and WEALTH have an affinity for each other.
All of that is just "story". It does NOT apply to everybody. It applies to those who accept it as their reality.
If you don’t accept it as your reality, and you take ACTION to make it NOT be your reality, it will NOT be your reality.
Now specifically, what I wanna tell you is this:
You need skills – and you need to acquire and develop skills that the market in which you are going to function – or the market you want to target – will appreciate enough to pay you profitably for.
If you are NOT willing to do that, then FORGET about dealing with hard times or winning in hard times or overcoming hard times.
Because life is NOT a straight line graph. Life is not a bed of roses. We know this and yet we behave as if we expect it to be like that.
You cannot say you want to be successful, in spite of fluctuations in fortunes of societies and people around you, and then you still sit around doing what you were doing last year, 2 years ago.
You have to be willing to study trends, anticipate changes, and adjust yourself accordingly to make the most of waves that are going to come your way – or get thrown your way by life.
So skills are the key to your survival.
When I talk about skills (I mean) skills in any area of endeavour whatsoever. Whatever your talents, whatever your abilities are, you need to be able to identify skills that are marketable, that can make people pay you money to apply those skills for them – to their benefit.
Okay?
You will always know that all you need to do is to apply yourself, make changes to your strategy, and still apply yourself again, and you will get the results you want.
I’m gonna give you a specific example.
For Africans in particular…as a matter of fact, for anybody anywhere in the world, the truth of the matter is that the Internet, PC and Internet technology, in conjunction with the use of smart phone technology and all of that – all the telecoms resources that we have today, that make this world such a rapidly changing marketplace.
If you can find a way to link what you do to the use of PC and Internet resources, you are going to succeed no matter the area of endeavour you are in.
It’s just going to be a matter of you using your creativity.
a. the use of PC and Internet technology
b. the use of PC and Internet technology to achieve their offline goals.
If you can do one of those 2 things, you will not have a problem finding income that you need to live well, even in the hardest of times.
If you’re somebody that is creative, then you can develop solutions that are digital that people can buy from you, and that has nothing to do with what you studied. It has nothing to do with whether or not you’re in paid employment. You can do this at night, and resume at work by 8 and still do it when you get home at night again.
This is the thing. You need to stop thinking conventional. You’ve got to be able to think outside the box – in fact just get rid of the box completely!
But if you’re willing to think the way I’m talking about, then I assure you nobody can stop you from growing your brand, no matter what area of endeavour you’re in.
And you will always find yourself thanking God, living a life that is glorifying to him, because people will be asking you: "What is your secret?"
Because even when people are complaining, you will not be complaining , you will be giving thanks. You will be expressing gratitude.
So, don’t let anybody tell you that there is one gloomy prediction that is going to apply to you. It is a decision you can take. You have the power in your hand to decide how your future will be – with faith in God, and with the willingness to apply yourself with persistence.
If you do these things I describe in this audio, or those that you find when you check out my website – www.tayosolagbade.com – your story will be different from others.

“In the race for excellence, there is no finish line” – Malcolm Baldrige
In a past edition of Philip Humbert’s(http://www.philiphumbert.com) TIPs newsletter, he wrote that persons building their businesses should always strive to make the systems they setup sustainable.
Sustainability, he explained, is what will ensure a business started up today can endure weeks, months or years of struggles till it eventually becomes what many(who are often unaware of the prolonged periods of struggle endured) call an “over-night-sensation”.
Philip’s expressed insight captures the essence of this article. Many times we think only about what we need to do to overcome the challenges of starting up a business.
We fail to think of what will be needed to successfully keep it going – profitably – for as long as we want it(or should I say “forever” i.e. long after we’ve passed on like Ford, Carnegie etc?).
If it was not for the use of Best Practice/Continuous Improvement Systems they developed in order to achieve sustainability, many Japanese companies would not be as efficient as they are known to be today.
Robert Kiyosaki once wrote that these sustainable systems keep many Japanese companies running on low operating expenses while achieving optimal efficiency in production.
They are consequently able to sell higher performance products at lower prices, thereby attracting more paying consumers – and increasing their retained profits.
“The world steps aside for the man who knows where he is going” – Abe Lincoln
It is important that you make it easy for yourself to stay on track towards achieving your business purpose. I once read somewhere that success is the never ending pursuit of perfection or excellence.
Stop and think for a minute about many successful businesses that you know have been around for as long as you can remember – IBM, General Electric, Ford, BMW, Mercedes. There is hardly anyone of them that has not gone through some evolution over the years from when it started till today.
Decision makers running these companies have to ensure they keep looking for cheaper and more effective ways of making the companies succeed. And in doing this, they would need to be able to accurately relate every action they take to the results they get, so as to competently decide on the best way(or combination of ways) to proceed. How well each company does this, determines how successful, and relevant it remains over the years.
The same requirement for big companies just described applies to small ones – and even individuals.
It can help you stay focussed towards achieving your set objective(s), and at the same time ensure you can review your achieved progress to determine modifications/changes you may need to make to your plan(s), in order to continue towards your purpose.
You can download an Acrobat PDF copy of my personal “Action Plan/Progress Evaluation Checklist Template”, from my website – TayoSolagbade.com.
1. Use a spreadsheet to produce a blank editable version of the PDF document. (You can make any changes you want to the headings to meet your peculiar needs).
2. Decide on your Purpose/Goal – type it in the space provided on the blank checklist. IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to be certain about what you write here. If you are not sure how to accurately decide what your Purpose/Goal should be, read “The First Way – DEVELOP A MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION” in my article “Ten Ways You Can Use Self-Development To Create The Future You Want”.
3. Under the “Year” column, enter the year in which each sub-Goal(see 4. below) is to be achieved. Try making entries according to the order in which each sub-goal is to be tackled relative to others.
4. On a piece of paper, list the specific key tasks/actions you will need to take in order to achieve your purpose or goal. These would be your sub-goals or mini-goals.
5. Next, you will number/type each Sub-Goal from 4. above under the “Sub-Goals” column in the checklist table, leaving a few rows between it and the next. This is necessary to allow for entry of description details for each sub-goal. (Note that you can have more than one sub-goal in a year – email the checklist template to yourself to see).
6. Enter bullet point descriptions under the “Action Plan” column, of the specific Action Plans (Tasks/Activities) you will need to implement in order to achieve each sub-Goal.
7. Indicate the specific date you expect to complete each task under the “When” column.
8. Indicate completion status for each task by entering “Yes, No or Ongoing” under the “Done?” column.
9. Decide on a reasonable time interval during which you will routinely review your progress(each time updating your entries to reflect the current status. It might help to print out and file each updated version to track progress made).
You will also be able to record DATE ACHIEVED next to each task successfully completed.
As you pursue your goals, this document can help you easily keep track of what has been done, and what needs to be done next. You will also find it to be an extremely useful reference material much later – especially when you need to revisit your startup/other experiences in the future (possibly in coaching someone else).
In the long run, the Action Plan/Progress Evaluation Checklist will provide you a detailed historical record of what you did to produce the results/achievements you recorded, making it potentially valuable for better decision making(and/or knowledge sharing) in the future.
With regard to the foregoing, and to end on a lighter note, writing a book – in future – about HOW you succeeded in business might just turn out to be easier than would be normally expected, if you have diligently used your Action Plan/Progress Evaluation Checklist!

In 48 hours, I’ve TOTALLY overhauled the look & feel of my flagship website incorporating smart content marketing automation without writing ANY code (see before/after screenshots below). The Joomla! Content Management System installed on my web hosting account, which my website runs on, made it ALL possible.
Be in control of your web marketing. Joomla! is NOT easy to learn, BUT it IS worthwhile to know!”
I explain why this is so below, and end with an offer to help you learn how to use it.
I help clients develop intelligent Web Marketing Systems as active sales leads generation tools.
Over 80% of clients who have requested this service already owned websites, but they went ahead and hired me to make their online presence more effective in doing what they wanted i.e. generating high quality sales leads on regular, reliable basis.
Between Nov. 03 and Jan 04, I taught myself to build commercial quality websites using Industry standard software viz: Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash etc.
I evolved my service such that clients only had to pay me to provide them a unique Web Marketing Systems based on my analysis of their needs.
Clients have purchased this service from various industries e.g. Health (Audiology), Real Estate, Information Technology, Environmental Services, Hotels, NGOs etc.
My elaborate website presence (at TayoSolagbade.com) attests to my ability to deploy wide ranging web solutions to achieve a variety of business marketing/branding objectives.
In many cases, I have used one or more of my own websites, to convince a prospect to hire me.
I then TEACH them to use the website systems I build for them, the same way I do. Those who do away with sloth and indifference, and apply themselves DILIGENTLY to making it work (like they see me do), reap sustainable rewards.
In 2016, I intend to begin offering quick-start hands-on training in use of Joomla and WordPress Content Management Systems. My primary target audience will be business/website owners. But others are welcome – including web developers who may be interested.
Let me state categorically that I have VERY high proficiency in use of both Joomla! and WordPress – especially in the creative application of their various features and functions for web marketing purposes.
That’s something you simply cannot learn from going through Joomla or WordPress tutorials online. My methods make me super productive, such that I’m able to implement multiple projects in a short space of time.

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” –Arnold Schwarzenegger
Think your problem is worse than other people’s? If YES, then let me start by warning you that thinking that way is VERY likely to be a mistake. And if you go on thinking that way, you will end up believing that no one can help you. Funny thing about our thoughts, when repeated long enough, is that they tend to manifest in the physical just as we imagined them.
In otherwords, by thinking(to yourself) that there is NO solution to the problem(s) you have for instance, you could actually end up not finding any solution to it – no matter how much help you get!
In my language (Yoruba), we have a VERY wise saying that goes thus: “He that has a head has no cap, and he that has a cap has no head”.
The morale of that saying is that for each of us there will be different strokes or experiences. Life will dish out challenges to us according to our abilities.
We must therefore learn to avoid complaining and instead face whatever challenges we encounter head on. That way, we will not be overwhelmed by them. And if we hang in there long enough, we will breakthrough.
Jim Rohn wrote that even though life’s challenges will always give us reason to want to give up and/or complain, we must avoid doing either. And as he so rightly observes, complaining about our problems only “adds to the downward pull of life”. I think the irony of it all, is that just as you feel the struggles you are going through are the worst possible, there is quite often(if you look carefully and honestly enough) someone else who will tell you his/her own story and make yours look like a “fairy tale”!
Let me briefly share with you the story of a fellow entrepreneur, who I will call Taiye, who during one particularly tough year(as he narrated it to me) had a barrage of bad luck thrown at him from every conceivable direction.
First, he – and his family – were thrown out by their landlady for not being able to pay rent. To earn income to supplement the little he brought in, his pregnant wife had to mount a stand along the roadside selling vegetables which he grew on a piece of land someone let him use.
Then one day she took ill(while still carrying the pregnancy), was admitted to the hospital, and for months barely hung on to life as he struggled to pay her mounting medical bills.
Despite all these he remained focussed, borrowed money when he could, did odd jobs and eventually his wife recovered, the baby was born safely etc. Looking back, he told me he never thought he would arrive where he is today. All those setbacks occurred at a time when business was really bad for him, making it all the more difficult and painful to go on.
It was – according to him – like a cruel conspiracy of fateful events had been visited upon him. Yet, he hung in there.
He also pointed out that his “hanging in there” successfully was made “easier” NOT because he never considered giving up, but because he had eliminated all possible sources of retreat (sound familiar?).
I have had some nasty experiences driving along the Benin-Ore road(with my family in the car) on three unforgettable occasions. One time, my car stopped because of failed engine valves, a bad alternator and a resultant run down battery.
From 1.00pm in the evening till 10.00pm at night we were at Ore, where a team of “crack” roadside mechanics took my engine apart and put it back together – with me watching closely and asking questions(What I learnt that day about car engines, serves me well today!). After it all, we declined the offer to take up accommodation at a rundown motel there, and resumed our journey at 10.30 pm to get to Benin. I drove at over 150km/hr in the hope that armed robbers(if any) on the way would be too scared to stop us.
Apart from terrible potholes we ran into because of this, I also ended up losing a wheel cover. While sharing this experience with a colleague later on, I vividly recall him saying “I’ve never lost a single wheel cover since I started driving along that road.”
Although I did not take him up on it, that statement immediately struck me as rather naive. If a person measures his progress by the fact that s/he’s never had anything go wrong with his/her plans, then s/he is in big trouble. The only way nothing will ever go wrong with anything you do(or plan to do) is if you never do(or plan to do) something you have never done before! In other words you would be risk-averse. If you are, then you will also be success-repellent!!
My personal experiences as a person who has ALWAYS thrived(and often emerged better off) in the midst of problems and challenging experiences tells me you learn most, and mature faster, when you embark on intelligent risk-taking and mistake making.
So what if you never have a setback or nothing bad or embarrassing ever happens to you? That says nothing to anyone really.
If anything, it confirms that you will not be remembered for anything exceptional or outstanding either. Why? Because you would not have ventured beyond what you believe you can pull off. That would mean you will only be found doing those things you already know how to do – and most people are very good at that, so it wouldn’t be a great achievement by any means.
Athletes run up hills to build leg muscles and stamina. Running on level ground would have been “easier”, but would not push them to break new thresholds of performance. Those who work out – to build muscles – subscribe to the axiom “No pain. No gain” because they know if they do not continue to INCREASE the weight of dumb-bells they lift, their biceps/other muscles would NOT continue to grow in size!
The same rule applies in the intellectual realm:
“The brain that is not used suffers atrophy” – Thomas Edison
“The mind must be exercised if it is to grow and strengthen. The more you use your mind, the more it will improve your ability to think” – Jay Anderson
James Cook, author of the best selling book “The Startup Entrepreneur” called those bad experiences “Shrewd Instructors”. They teach hard lessons, which inevitably equip anyone who undergoes them, to succeed. A person who makes a habit of taking the short term comfort route by avoiding difficulty, adversity, hardship etc is likely to end up also “avoiding” long-term success, and may end up missing a chance(s) to achieve a worthwhile existence.
The following quotes sum it up quite well.
“If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing.” – Benjamin Franklin
“A knowledge of the path cannot be substituted for putting one foot in front of the other.” – M. C. Richards
So, now that you know(or have been REMINDED of) the above BENEFITS, are you done yet with mulling over your misfortune? You should be. It’s time you went back out there to make things happen the way you want them to!
“The world steps aside for the man who knows. where he is going” – Abraham Lincoln
