I’ve met many “Carrot Danglers” (or CDs) – as friends, coworkers and especially as clients. They basically want to get something for nothing (or as little as possible) from YOU while pretending like they have something to give.
My advice: Avoid them. But do so tactfully.
The ideas I share in this article are based on personal experiences and observations as a DISCERNING adult in my interpersonal interactions over the YEARS.
[Note: I picked up the term “Carrot Danglers” (and its apt definition) from the article linked below, titled “Lessons in Discernment: Carrot Danglers” by Marina Michaels]

“A carrot dangler is someone who promises something—to help you out, to give you something, to introduce you to someone, or whatever—and never comes through. When you try to collect on the promise, there is always some reason why they can’t give it to you right then, though they tell you they will do it another time. But when “another time” comes along, that isn’t a good time either, and so it goes, until you give up on that carrot, and then they start to dangle another carrot. The underlying dynamic is that they are generally getting something they want from you, and they are making the appearance of offering something in exchange, but they never actually give anything in return.” – by Marina Michaels, http://www.thelighthouseonline.com/articles/carrots.html

carrot

When I suspect someone relating with me is a CD, I do NOT let on that I suspect what s/he is up to.

Instead I go out of my way to act the fool so that s/he feels safe to act out his/her true intentions each time we have to interact.

But that’s as far as I go – acting the fool. Sometimes, getting it right may require that I let him/her have his/her way – but only once, or at the worst, twice. Just so I can be sure that what I suspect is really what it happening.

Once that happens, in future interactions, I make sure to NOT give him/her what I see s/he wants, except s/he delivers what s/he puts forwards first.

For instance, let’s say s/he says s/he wants to buy my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager for a farm business s/he claims s/he plans to start “soon”, BUT URGENTLY wants me to set up a branded Facebook business marketing page for his/her Agro consulting outfit next week.

Usually, alarm bells go off in my head when I get requests couched in offers like this. If I sense it’s driven by a “Carrot Dangling” motive, I simply ignore the other thing s/he asks for (the Facebook page)  and focus on talking about the suspected carrot itself i.e. the Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager.

But I do it with tact – so s/he does not have reason to feel offended.

To illustrate, I could say:

“You know, now that you mention it, I could give you that Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager at 50% discount if you make a down payment of 5% of the discounted fee at the same time as that for THIS Facebook business marketing page you want done URGENTLY”

If s/he balks at THAT too-good-to-be-true counter offer, THAT would often be a  sign that s/he most likely NEVER intended to make that other purchase. Otherwise, a 5% down payment on a 50% discounted fee is a NO BRAINER for anyone. Especially when both parties are already connected via prior transactions. You can vary this to suit your unique circumstances and needs.

When you put the suspected CD on the spot in the above described manner, and s/he does not respond appropriately, chances are often good s/he was only dangling THAT carrot to get you to do the other thing (which is really what s/he needs) in the hope that your desire to have the carrot will make you give that thing s/he needs!

Nothing spells disrespect and manipulation more than THAT!

As a rule, I tactfully avoid people who do this in my personal and work life. They are the kind who can drain you dry.

I’ve been told that some CDs may not know they are doing it.

BUT I do NOT buy that argument or excuse!

Any conscious and emotionally intelligent adult MUST be sensitive to treating others right. That’s why we have BRAINS and EMOTIONS. We can think and we can feel. Our minds are unapologetic in telling us when we do wrong and when we do right. We only decide whether or not to listen – which is why some people act good and others do bad…like those who operate as CPs!

As far as I’m concerned, using and manipulating others for selfish gain is never justifiable! Anyone you love or respect should never have it done to them by YOU.

Anyone who makes the mistake of doing it to me, in a manner that leads me to conclude s/he is a CP, will get the “treatment” described above. Period!

school-good-question

So s/he begins life doing a job s/he does not like for its pay and possibly work conditions, but which s/he feels obligated to hold on to, until something better shows up.

Very rarely, does s/he ever seriously contemplate exploring the option of starting his/her own business – even though it frequently promises much better rewards!

The reason that happens is that our kids go through life being told they only need to get good grades and then get a good job, to make it in life.

Very few parents ever tell them another formula exists i.e. the route of self-employment or entrepreneurship. And THAT journey can be started more or less at the same time as formal schooling.

Some people argue that that a child should not engage in income earning activities while schooling – and even call it child abuse. I argue that THAT is not correct, because it is the “HOW” of it that matters.

I’ve schooled with orphans and indigent students (and I’ve also had clients who told me that as kids they) had to work to pay their way through school – for various reasons.

What I found out was that those experiences forced them to mature faster and develop competencies to arrive adulthood readier to succeed in spite of adversity in the real world, than many of their peers, who did not have to fend for themselves to complete their education.

Conventional schools are not telling learners the truth about what they need to know and have to achieve what Nigerian society defines as success.

That’s the key: First we need to define what society’s expectations of them will be!

[NB: This does not mean they have to accept those expectations. Instead, it’s about PREPARING the kids to deal with those demands and expctations psychologically or otherwise.]

Will their certificates and degrees be enough? Or will they be measured based on how much money they have regardless of their educational attainments?

Truth be told, the latter is the reality that confronts us today.

Most people in society pay MORE attention to how much material possessions and money you have, than they do to your academic qualifications or credentials.

It’s also why no one seems to care how others make money anymore. Once you have it, people fall in line and “respect you”. The well schooled person unable to function in a crooked society that does not recognize merit, then ends up being ridiculed about “blowing grammar and knowing too much book”

That’s why blatant bribery and corruption in schools and religious institutions is so rampant.

Smart best practice parents will focus on identifying what works, to ensure their honest, upright, do-things-the-right-ways kids don’t end up getting frustrated in the society after they leave school

My views on this subject have been shaped by my experiences as a product of the conventional schooling system.

I excelled in paid employment – but encountered serious absence of fair and impartial systems to reward my efforts in entrepreneurship – until I developed a system that greatly reduced my need to interact directly with people in my society to make money I needed.

The pain and suffering I passed through taught me that Vocational Skills Based Schooling is the safest and most reliable way to educate a child for self-actualization – especially in Nigeria.

Any school system that cannot provide a real world relevant vocational (NOT hobbies) base for education of learners will NOT have access to my kids.

I see today’s conventional schooling not counting in society and honesty/integrity being ridiculed.

In Nigeria, this problem is compounded by the fact that those who have no work routinely have more money than those who do.

This is a fact that stares us in the face DAILY.

Yet we continue using an education system that fails to eliminate that embarrassing imbalance!

The question I continue to ask is: Must everyone pass through the same educational system? Does everyone NEED to pass through the same TRAINING?

The answer of course is NO. We all differ from one another – and our unique abilities will often determine what method of learning best suits EACH of us.

Like I’ve said in the past, human beings are not like livestock (poultry, pigs etc). We cannot be reared in uniform BATCHES based on the same menu of INPUT.

To do so would be to damage the individuality of each person.  Room has to be made for the unique needs of each person!

Our conventional schooling system tries to force ALL learners into the same mould – and THAT is wrong!

That’s why Sir Ken Robinson said it damage creativity.

Little wonder that many gifted kids emerge from it looking and acting clueless most times. It is also why we keep coming across trained medical doctors who switch careers late in life to finds success and fulfillment in professional soccer or fashion design!

In Nigeria, it is why our kids who graduate from our schools are getting described as “unemployable”. And it’s also why the idea of self-employment is so difficult for most of our graduates to comprehend!

The status update shown in the screenshot below, posted by Charles Ayo Dada features powerfully thought provoking rhetorical questions that underscore the point I’m making here…

pii-cad

Like he wrote: “…It seems our spirits are in recession. We suffer from lack in the midst of plenty.Click here to read the status update.

Once a child can read and write competently, s/he can learn any subject s/he has interest in.

I’m training my kids to develop a firm vocational skills “reflex” as a basis for their academic studies. In other words, they are being taught to identify vocations they LOVE and channel their academic energies towards theoretical and practical mastery of it i.e. killing two birds with one stone.

This will make them creative thinking self-directed learners.

Our schools are forcing kids to study subjects they often do not need to manifest their genius and find their purpose in life.

We fail to realize the real ultimate and most important goal of schooling. As a parent who was brilliant in passing thru the school system, the experiences I’ve had in life have taught me that our conventional schools focus on teaching too little of what matters the most in the real world – especially the hands-on practical stuff that have to do with living a successful life!

In today’s Nigeria, most people are just mindlessly doing what others have done, with regard to educating their kids, without checking to see if a better way exists.

Considering the fact that those who received similar schooling in the past, are today walking the streets struggling in spite of the obeying the “Every child must go to school” law, I wonder why this is so!

Ask yourself: What kind of schooling system has society made available? Does it give my child what s/he needs to succeed in the real world of the Nigerian society?

The answer my objective evaluation gave me was NO.

So I decided to develop a complementary program of my own that would give my kids a better foundation to protect their minds against future exposure.

Today we use a technology and exercise based model, with a vocational bias to progress. They carry out specific tasks including but not limited to book work.

I argue that taking exams is not the only way to evaluate learning achieved. Indeed passing exams is no guarantee of success anywhere in the world, especially outside paid employment.

Now, while we’re on the subject of exams…

It’s funny that I did not know about it earlier, but there are apparently societies that do not require kids to take exams at certain levels – yet the kids that pass through their schooling systems still excel internationally.

Sadly, many Nigerian parents don’t even know this truth.

And those who do already engage in crooked dealings they see others do to get ahead outside paid employment. As a result, they don’t care what schools do because they know they’ll be helping their kids cut corners like they did!

I’m therefore not concerned about such parents.

It’s those law abiding, hardworking and honest parents who fail to see this problem with the Nigerian school system and society, as it can (and often will) negatively affect their kids that I feel sorry for!

This is a precursor to our forthcoming Quick Start Guide Book titled “How to Cheaply Make Cup Cakes without an Oven or Cooker & Sell Them for Profit” – based on what we do, as a family.

[RECOMMENDED] Tackling the Rise of Fake Qualifications in Nigeria By Linus Unah on June 6, 2017

The truths stated in THIS report is why I INSIST on empowering my kids with real world relevant income earning VOCATIONAL SKILLS as a MAJOR priority – a strategy I advocate for adoption by other parents.

Tackling the Rise of Fake Qualifications in Nigeria By Linus Unah on June 6, 2017

The disease of forging education certificates has infected every sphere of public life in Nigeria, including politics. In fact, several politicians have been embroiled in scandals involving fake certificates.

“Certificates are a big deal in Nigeria. From parents to corporates and the civil service, people attach as much value to educational certificates as to the skills, experience and attributes one has to offer.

This obsession with certificates has created a culture in which most school-goers are much more concerned with getting good grades than they are with acquiring the actual skills and competencies that would stand them in good stead after graduation.

And this – the overwhelming desire to rack up excellent grades – has stolen the joy that comes from studying to acquire a firm grasp on an academic discipline. It has also led many people to falsify their academic records for personal gain.”

[RECOMMENDED] “You will never find white people wearing our hair” says Marah Louw, Former South African actress and singer

On Aug 1, 2014, I wrote my article titled: “Bleaching” Your Skin Insults Your Creator, and Makes You Lose Dignity (Message from Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Lupita Nyong’o to Black/African Parents & their Children)” – click here to read it.

Back then I had not really come across any notable African celebrity who has spoken out against skin bleaching and other ills like Lupita Nyong’O had been doing.

So, when last month I came across this news report about an interview in which Marah Louw has done just that, I knew I would need to republish it on this blog.

black-pride-hair2

I am SO tired of seeing phony looking African females trying to  dress, look and sound like (what they consider) classy white women.

And I am equally tired of watching many silly and misguided African males showing illogical preference for lighter skinned females in defining beauty and choosing their partners.

To protect my sons and daughters from these warped values, I will continue to write about them and actively discourage their perpetuation. Recommending this report is one of several ways I do that.

Read the full interview with Marah Louw below:

[RECOMMENDED] “You will never find white people wearing our hair” says Marah Louw, Former South African actress and singer,

Marah Louw a South African singer and actress was this week a guest on the DJ Sbu Breakfast show where she shared her thoughts on the “bleaching phenomenon” and “black self-loathing”. She feels that weaves and bleaching go against people “insulting” what God has created.

She said that she has always been against it because it boils down to “low self-esteem and self-loathe”.

“You will never find white people wearing our hair the way we [wear] other people’s hair; going all out like that. You will never find white people wearing afro wigs, black afro wigs to go out and stuff, unless it’s a [themed] party or the circus,” she added.

“Low self-esteem made us black people hate the colour of their skin, it made us feel like we were [cheated] because we are black. Even in my time people used things like “Ambi cream” so that they became lighter, but I don’t understand why we are insulting the way God created us,” she said.

PII 067: Today, Millions Work Together Without Needing to Meet –And I AM ONE OF THEM [True Story: Audio to a Prospect Demanding to Meet Physically With Me]

In this issue of my Performance Improvement IDEAS (PII) newsletter, I share excerpts from an audio message I sent to a prospect Web Marketing client, who requested to meet with me, before we could take our discussions about my helping him develop a Web Marketing System further.

If you’re even remotely considering doing business of any kind with me and happen to share similar sentiments about meeting face to face, BEFORE you sign up, I strongly recommend you read THIS piece!

[Quick Tip] One thing I’m very conscious of as a Nigerian offering products and services 100% online like I do, from this part of the world, is the Nigerian “419 scam” stereotyping annoyance.

But I don’t devote any significant amounts of intellectual glucose to WORRYING about it, and how anyone may use it to interpret my insistence on working remotely, and getting paid to meet face to face.

But I remain conscious of it. So, when I do my stuff – especially with people from other countries – like Tanzania, Uganda and beyond Africa, I go to great lengths to ensure my brand is not tainted in any way. And that, for me, is all that is needed. Anyone who cannot connect with me AFTER that is simply not a good fit for me. We’re therefore better off not working together!

Below is the text of an audio message I sent to a gentleman with whom I once attended the same university (and even played in the same university team) – BUT have not met with since 1992 when I left the University…

Preamble: He had called me up and told me of his entry into the world of entrepreneurship,  in the insurance sector. At some point in our discussions, he mentioned that he wanted to get a car to facilitate moving around to find clients. I told him I could offer support by way of developing a WMS to drastically reduce the need for that, and save him considerable expense of funds.

One thing led to another, and I sent him some materials – including my trademark explanatory video and a draft Action Plan template – that he studied. Then he called me up and said he was interested in engaging me to develop the WMS I proposed.

BUT, he wanted us to meet, so he could “explain to me some things about the insurance industry”. I tried to explain that if he wanted that, he would need to pay a fee I required to meet with anyone – but I got the feeling it did not go down well with him. For me, however, there was no alternative to that. So, after the call ended I sent the message below:

====Start of Transcript Excerpt====

“Hi (name removed for privacy)…I got the impression that you have this feeling that you need to have a physical face to face meeting with me to explain anything to me about your industry.

I assure you that THAT is totally unnecessary.

The gentleman whose video I sent to you. Please you can contact him. We were all together in UI for your information. He graduated along with me in the same department – Agricultural Extension Services – in 1992!

He has not set eyes on me till today.

So you need to understand this.

And that’s just an example. I have so many clients that do business with me in and out of the country.

You do not have to believe me. It doesn’t matter. This is a due diligence update – not an attempt to win you over or convince you to sign up with me.

I’m doings this to give you some perspective on why I work the way I do, so you gain more accurate understanding and insights.

You see, what I’m offering to do for you is something I’ve been doing for years.

I never knew you were going to come to me, and I never knew you would have a requirement for this.

I only just reached out to offer help or support.

If you want to explain anything to me about your industry, you can ask Adesope about all the stuff I’m doing for him.

I got to a point that he was so busy he couldn’t do any writing. I said “..Sit  down with your Smartphone and record an audio for me, and I’ll transcribe it!”

I have transcribed entire books that are published – in print – and on sole via web stores, to a global paying audience

A legal consultant client of mine, who is based in a neighboring West African country for instance did not have to write a single sentence, to get his book written and published.

I simply did my research on him, and the book to prepare the initial content. Then I tracked him down to his office one day, after waiting endlessly for him to create free time from his busy schedule to write me what I needed, and I got him to record the audio while I was there.

But only did that was because I was physically in the same city at the time.

Another client, this time based in the UK, is someone I have never met with till this day!

Yet I ghost-wrote an entire book for him, before he then signed up for a promo version of my Web Marketing Systems development support service – for ONE year.

If he never returns, he’ll be denying himself an opportunity to achieve a valued goal, because he holds on to outdated ideas about how to do business with others!

There is also the fear of getting duped – but I argue that the way I present and position myself ALONE makes it clear that I’m not the kind.

I have worked with all sorts of clients in and out of the country, without the issue of meeting face to face with them stopping us from successfully completing the projects they paid me for.

I have a client in Kano, whose website I revived on a defunct domain when they signed up for a promo version of my Web Marketing Systems Development Support Service in 2015.

Last week, the MD wrote the email shown below, expressing their interest in taking up my offer to build a Video Marketing/Company Introduction Trailer for them.

This morning I spoke with the Chairman (Abdul) of the company, about their interest in the offer, offering my support in any way they required it, to take up the offer.

We STILL have NEVER met face to face, yet Abdul and I talk on phone as if we’ve known each other forever. He’s been on my mailing list for over 5 years now.

Same applies to a Farm CEO in Jos, who works as a lecturer in UNIJOS.

He has continued to signup up for most of my offers, and we speak on phone like we’ve known each other for years.

An Accra based Rabbit Farm CEO who first connected with me one night while I was working in a Cotonou cybercafé is today one of my most fervent advocates,

He recently thanked me for the support I’ve provided to him in use of my Excel-VB Ration Formulator software that he purchased late last year via Guaranty Trust Money Transfer (GTMT).

Today, using a lot of the guidelines and information I gave him, he produces livestock feed – pelletted – for his rabbits, and also for other animals, which people come to buy from him.

I could go on, but the point I’m making, is clear by now, I’m sure!

I am able to work successfully with clients in the above described manner, because I am driven to make smart, time-effort-and-cost-saving use of PC and Internet Technology to get Optimal Returns in my personal and work life!

If you want to tell me anything special or unique about your field of expertise, or market of interest or focus, simply record an audio (or video if you want) in which you speak freely about whatever it is you have in mind, and send to me.

I will then download and listen to/watch it, then respond or take action based on its contents as may be necessary.

It’s that simple!

This is the 21st century: Millions of People Work Together Without EVER Meeting Face to Face!

This is how I choose to work.

Back when I was in Guinness I was in the forefront of using automation to boost workplace productivity. I developed several custom automated spreadsheet application to replace manual brewing data recording and report preparation (Click here to read details in my LinkedIn.com profile or in my PDF resume here)

Some were eventually formally adopted for official reporting in the company – specifically Benin Brewery where I worked. And departmental heads from other sections of the brewery sought me out to help them do what I’d done in the brewing department.

The result was that I became “slightly famous” in the company – as my work got my name to be known right up to senior management levels, Most noteworthy was the fact that I did ALL that work in my SPARE time, since I was not employed in Information Technology, but worked as young brewer in the Technical Function.

So, you see, this is not a new thing for me. I’m an advocate of performance optimization. That’s why I call myself a Performance Improvement Specialist.

I chose to become an entrepreneur because my drive to achieve my full potential exceeded the opportunities I felt I was getting in Guinness back then.

Today, I’m glad I took that decision because I’ve since been able to establish myself as a force to be reckoned with in provision of ready-to-use custom Spreadsheet Software serving an international audience.

It is in order to further remove any limitation to achieve my full potentials that I have embraced the use of PC and Internet technology in doing what I do.

And the success I enjoy today is one that I intend to consolidate. I have proof to back up all the claims I make about how I work and who I work for, as well as how I get paid.

The reality I describe in this article is one that my kids are well aware of, as they LIVE it with me.

The screenshots of email messages with recent paying clients offer details of what I do and how I do it (Click each image to view larger version)

ABOVE: A message submitted from my website by a CEO who watched the Youtube video for my software that he found through Google. He has since bought my software. See Proof 2 to 6 on the PDF pages (Click here to request download copy of the 6 page PDF) |

I have 3 main products that I sell:

  1. The Ration Formulator – tinyurl.com/RealRationDemo – used to formulate feed for farm animals.
  2. The 60 Page Feed Formulation Handbook : http://www.lulu.com/fr/fr/shop/tayo-solagbade/practical-livestock-feed-formulation-handbook/ebook/product-20817463.html
  3. The Poultry Farm Manager – tinyurl.com/15pfmVideos – used to manage Poultry Farms.

In the past, I drove my car around to market these products. In 2012 I decided to use only my WMS to find buyers. Today I sell them without needing to go out at all using the Internet! I provide real life evidence on the next page.

I sell without meeting the client. My Web Marketing System makes that possible. Over 80 percent of my sales happen online, because Google and other search engines make buyers find me, even though I do not spend money to advertise. My WMS is the secret weapon I use e.g when they type “software for managing a poultry farm” my video appears in page 1 of Google.

I can develop a Web Marketing System for your company to help you sell the way I do. IMPORTANT NOTE: A WMS is NOT a website. In fact, most of my clients already had websites when they hired me. The problem was that they were not getting buyers through the Internet. A WMS makes a website bring in customers through the Internet!  En savoir plus sur mon système de marketing Web à l’adresse

Above (Client No. 4): This client paid N85k into my account via bank transfer on 20th April 2017 (about 4 weeks ago). The payment was for my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager and a Bonus of 5 Audio Podcast Training Files sold at N10k, instead of N15k.

Below that is the email in which I delivered my Poultry Farm Manager software to client No. 4 on 21st April – 1 day after he sent payment (I have to personalize the software for each client – and that takes 24 to 48 hours)

Above (Client No. 5): This client paid N85k into my account via bank transfer on 28th April 2017 (about 3 weeks ago). The payment was for my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager and a Bonus of 5 Audio Podcast Training Files sold at N10k, instead of N15k. Below that is the email in which I delivered my Poultry Farm Manager software to client No. 5 on 30th April – 2 days after he sent payment (I have to personalize the software for each client – and that takes 24 to 48 hours)

Anyone who wishes to have me work on ANY project with him/her MUST be prepared to engage me based on how I prefer to work.

Should you wish to meet face to face with me, there will ALWAYS be a payment requirement to be met by YOU.

If/when you meet that condition, I will gladly make myself available to meet with you.

If you are not willing to meet my conditions regarding YOUR request for a face to face meeting, I will interpret it to mean you do NOT wish to take the relationship with me further.

Then an online, web-based interaction will be the only way to go…otherwise we both agree to walk away.

That (i.e. agreeing to walk away) happens every now and then, and it’s NEVER a bad thing.

However, I would add that it happens only about 5 to 10% of the time. Most times, I have been successful in winning clients over to work with me via my preferred online channel.

If you want to come into my world, you have to be willing to believe – that I AM WHO I SAY I AM!

That’s the thing, I believe in the power of technology. And I live a life that is proof of it. Right here in Africa/Nigeria, I’m living a 100% digital lifestyle.

You don’t have to believe me, but that is the truth about my existence as I type these words. If you want to do business with me, you will have to accept the way I operate!

Therefore if you share similar sentiments with those who cannot decide until they’ve seen the other person in the flesh and/or touched him/her, to be sure s/he is real, then it means I will NOT be able to help you.

You don’t have to meet with me in the flesh to do business with me. You CAN, if you want. I’m NOT hiding away from anyone. But there is a payment requirement that must be met.

By way of interest, past prospects, some who went on to become clients did go through that process of paying to meet with me (They were ALL told the amount was 100% deductible, if they chose to purchase a solution from me afterwards)

I recall a CEO representing a group planning to start an elaborate agro based training school of sorts, flew in from Abuja about 2 years ago (2015) to meet with me for 1 hour in a Lagos branch of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). He’d paid N10k into my account several days earlier, in line with my request.

This payment requirement to meet with me, is a psychological hurdle any doubting Thomases will have to jump over, if they wish for me to take them seriously. They will need to take a LEAP OF FAITH to convince me I would not be wasting my time by agreeing to meet face to face with them!

As I have noted above, people have and do pay to meet with me in this manner. Some even pay to speak with me on topics in which I share my in-depth expertise.

Anyone unwilling to meet my terms in that regard will simply NOT get access to me. That is how confident I am of what I offer.

So even though I can be flexible with regard to certain areas of my work, there are aspects I simply will NOT budge on, because they are critical to my ensuring I connect with the RIGHT people as clients.

Now, if you’ve read the above and STILL want to do business with me, click here to let me know!

PII 066: There’ll be No Need to Force Kids to “Finish” School If They See MORE Formally Schooled People Doing Well Financially [Hint: 9 Questions That Indicate How Conventional Schooling Shortchanges Learners]

This week’s issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter features nine (9) key questions I strongly recommend every parent ponder seriously over, to accurately discern how well the schooling his/her kids get will prepare them to function as vocationally competent and financially independent adults in society.

The cartoon below, quotes Einstein, in illustrating the FACT that our kids (and us adults) ARE NOT not all wired to learn or achieve in the same way!

einstein

Here are some signs and symptoms apparent in today’s society that convince me most of our conventional schooling systems are NOT equipping learners to function as described above.

Young people who actively seek ways to get money off you without doing any work or adding any value to you. Adults who constantly scheme and plot to do the same thing.

Personnel in banks who manipulate the computerized systems in their workplaces to skim money off your bank balance, or apply illegal transaction charges to your account.

Telecom companies operatives who subscribe your mobile number to silly services you have no interest in, and/or deduct airtime from your phone for phantom services. These are a few examples of the kind of activities happening with ever increasing frequency in the Nigerian society.

Most of those people involved in doing the above naughty things are SCHOOLED people, often with at least University level education.

Yet they find it necessary to engage in crooked activities to make money for their companies and themselves.

Like I’ve said in a past article, schooled people who steal are manifestations of a cruel paradox.

I say this because we all know that we are told that if we want to end up well in life, all we need to do is go to school, get good grades and then get good jobs.

Sadly, what we see in society proves that many well schooled people who find good jobs with good companies, still go on to steal and cheat at work and in life.

That’s why they get sacked and sometimes sentenced to prison. It is why many of them demand and accept bribes where they work. Many MANY examples abound in the past and present history of Nigeria – as I am sure you, the reader, know!

But why do they do it? Why do well schooled people steal?

I’ve answered that question in an earlier article.

[See [Podcast] Real Reason Why Well Schooled People Commit Fraud (Tayo Solagbade’s “Difference Between Schooling & Education” Series)]

It’s because they do NOT know how to make money, or more money and they are AFRAID that the money that have is not (or will not be) enough.

You see, the schools did not teach them how to make money. Only how to work for money – as employees, trading time for money.

And that limits how much they can get. So when they want more, not knowing any better way, they often settle for crooked ways to get it.

Simply put therefore, conventional schooling shortchanges learners – but many do not know it!

The questions outlined below highlight glaring contradictions between what we are told “schooling” WILL deliver to learners, and the realities the learners end up facing upon graduation. Parents who truly love their kids will carefully study these questions and use the insights they gain to better guide their kids’ education.

  1. Why is it that girls willing to dance seductively and/or half-naked in TV musicals today in Nigeria can end up earning a better living – income wise especially – than those who choose to find jobs based on their school qualifications, or even those who become entrepreneurs? This happens not because the latter career options don’t work, but because Nigerian society the ladies have to operate in gives LESS reward for such “work” compared to the former.
  1. Why is it that some of the world’s most celebrated sports achievers are from dirt poor homes that saw sports as an outlet to escape poverty, compared to formal schooling?
  1. Why is it OKAY (and not child abuse) for people who lose their parents in their formative years or who were born orphans, to work in their free time – as “kids”  and young adults – to pay their way through school? I know persons who did that right here in Nigeria. I schooled with them!
  1. Why do schools not give financial education to kids when the teachers know that understanding how to make money in and out of paid employment is often a determinant of how well people do in adulthood? Especially when money and how much of it they have will tend to be the primary criterion on which they will be rated – regardless of any other positive qualities they possess?
  1. Why don’t schools teach selling/self marketing skills when the ability to sell and sell one’s self will be crucial to the ability of the student to achieve desired progress in or out of paid employment AFTER s/he completes schooling?
  1. If the products of Nigeria’s formal schooling systems were doing so well in the large numbers they are being turned out, then why do we have armies of them roaming the streets with certificates in hand, looking for non-existent jobs, while being described by potential employers as unemployable? Also, why do so few of those who do well in our schools ever get to be voted to make good things happen for us in public office, with their brilliance?
  1. If the products of our conventional schools were doing so well in the real world, we would not have such growing number of kids unwilling to do the hard work of studying to pass exams without cheating – Or would we?
  1. Why do we have kids who want the benefits that can accrue from having a qualification, but do not want to go through the required process of “working/studying” to earn it? Why do they so eagerly “game” the system, in connivance with parents, teachers and examiners – the latter being the supposed custodian of the educational system being so raped?
  1. Have you noticed that the entertainment industry does NOT need laws or adverts to make adults of all ages eager to learn what it takes to partake and succeed in it? Does it occur to anyone that youths with all kinds of academic qualifications enroll and succeed in Project Fame and other reality shows etc? In other words, their academic schooling rarely matters to their ability to excel in this area – so why don’t we just find those who thrive best at it, and train them as early as possible in their lives?

What is happening with all these contradictions they see in society today, is that our kids are being “taught” that being the most academically brilliant with the best grades does NOT matter as much as being willing to cut corners to get what you want.

They see what we do – and refuse to listen to what we say, because they know the latter is NOT true.

Evidence of this is seen in the fact that our TV/Radio and newspapers give superior coverage to news about celebrities in various fields that are often drop outs or poorly schooled.

Out kids also see politicians accused of fraud walking free despite countless visits to courts – and even those who serve jail sentences for stealing being rewarded on their return with heroic welcomes!

While that is happening, they encounter honest and hardworking adults daily – including their own teachers – who never get rich or famous, despite being well schooled! And they also see those who chose to follow their own paths in life, rather than go the conventional schooling route, doing a whole lot better than schooled persons.

It is the mix of all the above that makes schooling so unattractive for kids over time, especially as they grow older – and that is why some choose to drop out.

If truth be told, would one need to force kids to study hard or attend school, like we did in our time, if they saw formally schooled people doing well in large numbers in society?

Case study: Shina Peter told his mum at age 8, that he no longer wished to attend school, choosing instead to live with and apprentice under Ebenezer Obey, so as to pursue his passion of learning to play the Guitar/music.

In a recent (2015) interview, Shina Peters was asked if he regretted not getting a formal education. He replied saying he had no regrets and that he had achieved so much success professionally and financially pursuing his dream as a self-taught musician that he employed well schooled persons, including PhD holders.

Now, THAT is a happy and fulfilled man speaking his mind right there. I believe BEING HAPPY AND FULFILLED is what matters most in life, and each of us as parents need to guide our kids to achieve that end.

Shina is NOT alone. There are  many like him. Their examples prove schooling is NOT an end in itself. It is a means to an end – the end being each person’s definition of happiness and fulfillment.

A person’s creative genius is a crucial ingredient needed to achieve that optimal state of being.

Any schooling system that does NOT enhance the learner’s ability to put that genius to use in achieving that state is NOT healthy for the child.

You have an obligation as a parent to challenge your society to do that for your child. If it does not, then you have a duty to find a way to fill in the gap created and if any damage is being done to your kid’s creativity, you must take steps to stop it.

This is what I have been doing for my kids, and I will continue to do it for them, showing them what matters, until I am sure they can carry on by themselves, taking necessary protective measures to preserve their creative genius.

What is your child’s genius? Do you know?

Many parents do NOT know that schooling is a means to an end, and NOT an end in itself.

That’s why they focus so much on “schooling” their kids, and pay little or no attention to EDUCATING their kids in readiness for real world relevant success outside school.

This is why we have so many people who leave school with brilliant grades and go on to struggle to make impact in life.

It is why (as Robert Kiyosaki notes in his book) we see C students becoming more successful and employing A students after they all leave school.

It is also why we see UNSCHOOLED persons or school drop outs doing far better in the real world than their schooled counterparts.

I argue, as a Best Practice Parenting Advocate, that a parent’s NUMBER ONE role in giving his/her child an education is NOT to pay school fees, uniforms, textbooks etc. Neither is it to pay for access to summer school and exams.

RELATED ARTICLE: Education is not ‘for’ anything – it is an end in itself –  by Dennis Hayes of Independent.co.uk | Thursday 4 October 2012 15:58

The knowledge and understanding of subjects has no moral purpose. It may lead to discontent.

Education is not about ‘preparation for life’. Nor is testing about ‘preparation for the tests of life’.  Education is not ‘about’ anything except education. Debates, lectures and discussions with the title ‘What is education for?’ are popular, but they embody an instrumental mistake about the nature of education: education is not for anything. It is an end in itself. If all the problems of economic and social life were solved and people did not even have to work, we would still seek knowledge. This is encapsulated in Socrates’ vision of eternal life as an endless series of conversations and debates with the greatest thinkers.

Do You Want to Make Your Spreadsheet Application Do Everything You want and Nothing You Don’t?

[This article is based on the contents of a one page flyer I used to promote the pavement pounding version of my Excel-VB Solutions Development service in my startup years back in 2005 = see photo below!]

flyer-xlh-2005

I’ve tweaked it a little to include details relevant to the 100% web based operation I run today.

What do you currently do with spreadsheets that you wish you could do FASTER, MORE ACCURATELY and with LESS EFFORT than you currently do?

My name is Tayo Solagbade – Creator of the Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation Club and Competition

I work with individuals and businesses/organizations to develop Custom, Pre-programmed Excel-Visual Basic Applications with Graphical User Interfaces that make using Excel to do what you do less cumbersome.

If you would like me to work with you, to make that spreadsheet or workbook easier to use and more accurate in the output it returns, click here to contact me today.

Alternatively…

You can watch my FREE Home Study tutorial videos and Screenshot demonstration user guide videos for some of my commercial quality spreadsheet applications at www.excelheaven.tayosolagbade.com or www.excelheaven.biz

You will notice from doing so that I how I put use intelligent and creative coding to and design, to put smart customization and POWER at the user’s mouse tips, in the solutions I develop.

Don’t Be Quick to Assume You’ve Seen This Before!

For the first 2 to 4 years after I started out in 2002, when the market for solutions of this kind were practically non-existent in Nigeria, 99% of the time, those I introduced to my work often readily assumed they knew what I was talking about i.e. especially when they heard the word “automation”

That is UNTIL they saw a demo of one of the real life software I offered for sale, and a video of an elaborate home study tutorial I’d created for an advanced learner I’d coached

That was why my VERY first client in 2004 paid me N100k (about $600 USD) at the time, to have me develop a custom Excel-VB driven application branded with his company’s logo and other details, for a high profile client – and Oil Exploration company.

My client was so convinced of my ability to deliver, that he paid the entire amount (i.e. 100%) upfront.

And I DID deliver – within the agreed TEN (10) days of starting the job.

Since then, I’ve gone on to do even bigger jobs for clients in various markets that paid more than twice that amount.

Today, I build and scll custom apps to meet the needs of clients -and get paid for doing so by clients within and outside Africa – especially Farm Business Owners. One of my most popular ready-to-use products for Farm CEOs earns me about the same amount I used to get paid to BUILD apps for clients when I first started out.

I CAN HELP YOU SAVE MONEY, TIME AND EFFORT!

I have a vision to help individuals and businesses get maximum returns from using Microsoft Excel in their work.

With my help, you/your organization might just be able to save money your spend to the tune of many thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands, that you could otherwise spend on an EXPENSIVE commercial off-the-shelf application that could end up not meeting all the peculiar needs of your team members/business.

Why not contact me and see if I can WORK WITH YOU via my remote web based service, to develop an application that does all the things you would like to do – at an affordable price.

Incidentally, I also support train and coach in Advanced Excel and ExcelVB Programming.

In fact, I run an Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation Coaching club which caters for business users and kids.

The 4 plus minute video clip linked below features a presenter engaged in a debate of sorts with an audience member, who expressed disagreement with some things she (the presenter) had said about Global Warming.

logic-debate

In making her point, the audience member argued saying 98% of scientists held a particular view she supported, on the issue.

That led the presenter to embark on what I consider a most illuminating exposition on how logic works, and why the use of expressions like 98% cannot be done without basis.

I share the transcript excerpts below, because I believe MANY of us make the mistake she (I’ll call her “Logic-Lady”) points out here, when we want to drive home our points. And we need to know we are NOT proved right by it!

But let’s just look at what she said…it’s really worthwhile.

So she said that 98% of scientists agree that global warming is a major problem

Everyone in this room has gone to college, so you’re gonna like the logic of this.

If we say 98% of something, there must be a 100%. So somewhere there must be a list. There must be a list of all the scientists that exist.

My first challenge to this lady is to give me the list of all the scientists that exists in America, in the world, because if they do, that is how you can use the word 98 percent.

If there isn’t a definitive list, there is no such thing as 98 percent

Number 1 – logic!

Number 2: Science does not proceed by consensus. Science is not democratic!

At one time in history, it was the consensus that the earth was flat. Everyone believed in that. Everyone agreed on that. One man said that THAT was not true.

Anybody who says to you “The majority agree with it so it’s true, is not a scientist.”

I don’t know what they are, but they are not a scientist!

The laws of gravity do not get agreed by a consensus, by a vote, by a democracy.

Science is not democratic. Science is about truth.

One person can be correct

The person who quotes 98% of scientists is someone who knows you’re already losing.

So they are sung “illogic”.

98% of all scientists – unless you have an index of all scientists.

It doesn’t really matter how big the list is – it doesn’t  matter!

Because the truth is the truth. It’s not done by majority.

We can’t all vote in this room about the laws of physics and then make it right.

Click HERE to download the full video and listen to the rest of the debate they had, which ended with the logic-lady “educating” her counterpart about how the American experiment compared to the European experiment.

How can we use what she has taught us here?

I say that each of us in our field must realize that since science is based on truth, and ONE person can be right, then IT COULD BE US, as individuals in our respective fields of specialization.

In my case, I can relate to this in several ways.

One way has to do with my decision to commence offering custom spreadsheet software development services in the Nigerian/African market.

I had no role models o emulate, and no one I approached, in computer or business schools, saw any value in what I was trying to do. Business owners initially asked “Who is going to pay you for that?”.

I also got routinely mocked by those who knew what I was trying to do, during the times when I was still struggling to create my niche market in Nigeria.

Today, I enjoy name/brand recognition as a trusted provider of unique custom Excel-VB driven software to buyers in and out of Africa.

Those who told me it could only work in America, and who kept telling me to go do something else know better today.

So, I was right, but I had to act with faith and determination, coupled with relentless persistence to SHOW that I was. And in so doing, I proved that the many pointed opinions voiced by individuals and groups, to me, about the workability of my idea of selling automated workbooks to people in Nigeria, were wrong.

One needs to remember the words of this lady, and the quotes I started this piece with, which are reproduced below, if/when we find ourselves having to consider going a route no one else seems willing to go.

Anatole France, the shipping magnate once said:

“If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.”

Several years ago, I coined the following quote on the same theme:

“Some people make the mistake of equating consensus with truth. That you, and others who think like you, agree among yourselves that a centipede is a millipede wearing a metal coat, will not make the centipede become a millipede.” – Tayo Solagbade

Many people have difficulty being objective in their views about issues, so they struggle to employ logic. This is because a biased mind cannot produce logical reasoning!

The Logic-Lady’s above stated explanations about science as it relates to logical reasoning is VERY relevant to our realities as individuals in society.

Today, there are too many people unwilling to apply critical thinking and logic in their daily interactions. As a result, they depend on group-thinking, whereby they force their narrow views down other people’s throats by using the power of numbers and consensus e.g those who share similar views gang up and overshadow others who may actually have better ideas to offer.

What you know or the experience based insights you have could be telling you something that others may not easily see or hear.

You owe yourself, and the rest of society to NOT let yourself be intimidated into silence or inaction by consensus wielding individuals or groups.

That’s what the man who showed us all that the earth was not flat did. He spoke out, and stuck to his argument, even though he was the only one.

You can do the same!

[VIDEO & Mind Map] How Tayo Solagbade’s Customizable Zero Cost Web Marketing System Generates Zero Cost Sales Leads for YOU

Earlier today, I sent the 2 emails reproduced below to several CEOs whose marketing or business promotion materials/resources I came in contact with during a recent event.
My purpose was simply to offer suggestions I felt would benefit them in getting more marketing mileage for their brands.
What I did was to call each person up, mention how I got his/her materials and then ask a few questions about how s/he currently did his/her marketing.
After getting what I felt were enough insights from the responses provided, I would then offer an introduction regarding the use of a WMS, and propose sending the explanatory no-strings-attached email followup, with his/her permission.
Each CEO said YES – and so I sent him/her the promised emails.

Below, I share excerpts from the emails I sent them, in the hope that others in need of ideas may find them of some benefit. If you need more details or specific help, click here send me a message.

Hi,

Our phone conversation earlier today refers.

Like I said, I’m NOT selling anything.

Instead, I feel led to offer some suggestions to you (and some others) whose marketing materials I picked up, from their stands at the recently concluded event.

There’s a lot of other stuff I’ve written about how a Web Marketing System can be used to achieve timeless marketing based name/brand recognition and zero cost sales leads generation. {Hint: Google “tayosolagbade.com: web marketing system” – or just click preceding link)

My approach is to use MY NAME as a basis for promoting my brand, That’s why I noted that you could make people who Google your name discover your brand that way.
However, using an “alias” also works as well, – especially if your day jobs makes it imperative that you avoid openly linking your name, or yourself with income earning activity outside that with your employer.
Ok…on to my “suggestion”:

You may find it useful to view this mindmap and watch the video explanation (click here to request download access) for what I NOW believe will best suit your needs.
wms-video
I call it a Zero Cost Web Marketing System (WMS) or an Effective Online Presence (EOP)

Below is a generic message I use to explain what it is all about:A. Find attached a mindmap image (see it here) that shows key components of what I call a customizable Web Marketing System (WMS).

A WMS, setup right, can be used to boost your business marketing reach/impact, measurable over time in terms of:1. time, effort and money you WILL save

2. Quality sales leads/enquiries you will generateB. Find attached a zipped folder containing a video (click here to request download access) for you to watch offline, in which I explain what the WMS components are about and how they benefit businesses that use them.

To watch the video, REMOVE or EXTRACT the 2 files in the zipped folder, and place them in the same location on your PC.

Then use either Option A or Option B to playback the video:

Option A: Double click on the web page file (the one with the browser icon) among the two, to watch the video in your browser. If you get a prompt to activate “Adobe Flash Player” click on the prompt to activate it by following the instructions that appear. This method typically applies to PCs with older versions of Windows Operating System.

Option B: In newer versions of Windows, and/or on PCs with VLC players, ignore the web page file and simply double click the much larger SWF file – the video should start playing immediately.

Let me know if you need help/have questions or require clarification.
I hope you find it useful – and wish you more success with the creative work you’re doing!
With kindest regards,

=====

I followed the ABOVE email message with the one shown below, containing links to a complementary educational resource I felt would benefit the CEOs:

Hi again…

As a follow up to my preceding email suggestion that you adopt a custom Web Marketing System to promote your brand at zero cost…

I recommend you read this article linked below. I wrote it late last year.
Watch the video explanation I did on my Youtube channel:
Download and study the mind map I created as a basis for the article:
Understanding the ideas I share in the above resources will help you make more intelligent use of the WMS you develop and implement for your busines – especially in terms of how you make use of your time to find potential clients.
I wish you well.

Final Words: This is a Public Service of sorts…so do share this post to your networks if you know anyone who may benefit!

Every once in a while I come across persons in business with whom I feel led to share  ideas. Many times I readily LEARN from such persons, even though they may not have gone out of their way to try teaching (or sharing with) me.
That’s how I’m wired – constantly SEARCHING for ways and means to improve my ability to do what I LOVE doing. So, whether you like it or not, if I encounter you in person or online I CAN learn from you – and I WILL, if I see cause to.
But I’ve learnt that others may not be able to function like I do. Indeed very few are driven like I am to actively explore continuous improvement avenues to take what I do to the next level.
So, whenever I feel the need, I try to give of myself in a CSR kind of way. Just offering to give back by sharing what I feel can help the other person, with him/her in a no-strings-attached manner.
That’s what I’ve done via email with the CEOs mentioned – and in this post for possible others.
Good luck with your marketing!
