No. 89: No Mentor Can Shield You from Mistakes

This is a universal truth. Any self-respecting mentor will acknowledge it. Whoever says s/he can help you avoid making mistakes is lying to you. A mentor can guide you to minimize mistakes you make.

But you WILL have to make some to gain full mastery or competence.

This week’s issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter explains why and how you can use mistakes to intelligently discover what you need to know, to succeed.

No. 89: No Mentor Can Shield You from Mistakes

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.sdacademy.org to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

This is a universal truth. Any self-respecting mentor will acknowledge it. Whoever says s/he can help you avoid making mistakes is lying to you. A mentor can guide you to minimize mistakes you make. But you WILL have to make some to gain full mastery or competence. This week’s issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter explains why and how you can use mistakes to intelligently discover what you need to know, to succeed.

1. Sometimes Re-Inventing the Wheel May Be Necessary

Man giving a lecture - related to quote: 'Teachers have it wrong. The right answer doesn’t mean anything. Learning comes from mistakes.' - Robert Kiyosaki

Not everything your mentor or teacher/coach tells you will work as expected. And except s/he’s psychic, s/he may not tell you all you need to know.

That won’t make him/her incompetent. It would simply mean s/he’s not all knowing. So, there’s a chance you’ll encounter a challenge you’ll have to find your own solution to.

Under such circumstances, finding what works for you will become inevitable – and could even involve re-inventing the wheel.

I say this based on personal experience.

I’ve taken many (crazy) risks over the years, in relation to my academics, career, business and even personal safety. On a number of occasions, doing so led to massive blunders. And in each instance I had to endure the pain, embarrassment and humiliation to recover.

Today, being wrong or failing does not bother me. Why? Because every time I’ve made mistakes I’ve always emerged smarter, stronger and/or better skilled.

And it’s those qualities that make me effective in pursuing any goal I set my sights on. It may take a while to get there, depending on a variety of factors. But I often do.

So, for me, making mistakes is process – a journey – you undertake in order to narrow down a list of possible options to find what works – for you.

EXAMPLE: Learning from My Mistakes With Domain Names (www.tksola.com, www.sdacademy.org, www.webmarketingsystemsdemo.com, and www.cbstudio.biz)

To learn from mistakes, we must accept that we’ve made them.

I practice what I preach.

Last year I almost did not renew any of the above 4 mentioned domain names. But I decided to keep them for an extra year and see what value I really got from each one.

This year (last week) I’ve chosen to renew only www.tksola.com – the URL that forwards to my speaking service website. Between February and last week, I’ve let the others expire as they came due. My checks show they no longer add tangible value to me.

What I’ve learnt from doing these “tests” will help me in future. All my work is now consolidated on www.spontaneousdevelopment.com (tksola.com points to a sub-domain).

2. Minimize Trial & Error: But Go Out & Make Your Own Unique Mistakes!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“The reason I know so much is because I have made so many mistakes”
– R. Buckminster Fuller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

No matter how much you learn from others in order to minimize trial and error, you must make YOUR OWN mistakes. Otherwise your development will be incomplete.

Don’t try to get to the finish line by avoiding mistakes.

Learning from a guru or mentor will not protect you from mistakes. If you think it will, you set yourself up for mediocre accomplishments.

For instance, the wisdom you share in your speaking events will lack unique flavor that resonates with audiences who hear, or read your messages – as their response will show.

There’ll always be something missing: and it will be your lack of authenticity.

Without making your own mistakes, you will find it literally impossible to develop authenticity. You will not really have a “message” that you truly own. Audiences will often tend to see you as one who “borrows” from those you learn(t) from, or refer to.

Some of the greatest speakers – in various areas of life – famously use (or used) stories to communicate their messages.

There are 2 kinds of stories you can tell your audiences: yours or other people’s.

Certain schools of thought argue that talking about yourself makes you appear boastful.

I recommend using your initiative to decide what approach to use at any point in time.

Don’t be over humble. When YOUR story will do a better job, tell it without apology!

Share anecdotes about how you fought your own battles in various phases of your life.

Someone in your audience may be at a stage in her own life when the ideas, and lessons you share, may be what she needs for inspirationNOT stories about historical figures.

You will do this not just in formal settings, but even during informal interactions.

It’s a powerful way to build credibility and influence with others.

3. What Works Today, May Not Work Next Year: So Use Mistakes To Evolve Solutions for the Future

Woman conducting quality control checks - related to quote: “Avoiding mistakes makes us stupid, and having to be right all the time makes us obsolete. When I finally discovered that I learned more by making mistakes than by having the right answers all the time, I set out to perfect the art of making more mistakes faster”.

The way I see it, succeeding means you’ve reasonably mastered a level of competence. And that implies you now need to move to the next level – and NOT to rest on your oars.

Here’s why: Sometimes you’ll find that the strategy that works for you today, or this year, may not work so well next year.

That’s why doing new things, and actively learning from mistakes made in the process, is a valuable strategy.

Doing so implies stepping out – again – of your comfort zone.

Consider a high jumper. Each time she scales a new height, the bar is raised. It’s the same with a weight lifter. With each successful lift, new weights are added.

Mistakes will help you learn smarter ways to get the results you want, no matter how often things change. And that will effectively guarantee you long term success.

Outsmart Competitors (& Earn More) Using Foreign Language Skills

This newsletter serves speakers, but service providers in general may periodically find some issues useful – like this one. Discover how developing ONE foreign language skill can help you (1) beat more competitors in your current market (2) win more business in new markets, and (3) make more money – despite harsh economic times.

This Will NOT Be Easy To Do!

I will not lie to you. What I propose in this piece will not be easy to do. But it can be done. I know, because I have done – and am still doing – it, even now. The long term benefits make it worthwhile.

So, you must purge yourself of any biases. Nothing in life that’s worth having is ever really easy – otherwise, everybody would succeed with little or no effort.

To outsmart your competitors (and earn more) using foreign language skills, I suggest 3 steps you can follow…

**********

1. Become Bilingual: Learn a Foreign Language Your Target Audience Needs

If you’re really ambitious, become a polyglot by learning multiple languages. However, I’d say carefully choosing one language your target market(s) can reward you for is best i.e. aim to become bilingual, by developing ONE useful foreign language skill.

That will give you a unique competitive edge your rivals will find hard to beat. This applies to service providers in any field. Unlike other skills, many people (especially those who consider themselves busy) simply find it hard to commit needed time and effort towards developing reliable proficiency in a foreign language.

That unwillingness on their part creates a great opportunity for you. All you need to do is choose the right language, and work hard to learn it.

Hiring a bilingual employee could also work well. However I argue that having functional competence in reading, writing, and speaking that language, as the top decision maker is what will really do the magic.

I say this from closely observing self-employed professionals who operate in this manner in Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Cameroon.

2. Go into Markets Few Others Care To Visit

The global economic crisis has reduced opportunities available in immediate local environments.  Sometimes you’re in your home country and market, and have to compete for clients with an overwhelming number of people who do exactly what you do.

Finding profitable projects therefore tends to be quite difficult.

But just across the border, there could be a demand for what you offer – in a contrasting scenario. Sometimes even right in your market the demand could be there.

Potential clients could be desperate to find help in your area of specialty: The only problem is, these they speak a foreign language e.g. French, Chinese, Italian etc

One example: As a legal consultant your services could be useful to fresh immigrants arriving in your country, and also to intending investors with limited English proficiency. That is of course if you could communicate effectively in their own language.

No matter how good you are at what you do, they will likely prefer a rival with reasonable familiarity with, their language, and possibly their culture.

3. Offer Solutions Few Others Care To Provide

Here are a few ideas…

a. Reach out to foreign business owners, and organizations (e.g. multinationals) – existing, or just arriving in your country/market to start business – and offer your services.

Example: A French speaking partner to a bilingual legal consultant friend of mine (knowing he cannot wing it) often sends him documents in English for translation. As a result, my friend earns extra income from both colleague and clients by being bilingual!

b. Travel to countries where your learned foreign language is spoken, and offer your services as a bilingual service provider. You can win projects to be executed there – and also win projects to be done back in your own country.

Example: In a French speaking country, for instance, you’re bound to come across business persons and professionals looking to explore opportunities at your end of the planet, but have always been held back by a lack of English speaking competence.

They are likely to jump at the opportunity to achieve their goals with your guidance.

I’m sure you can come up with more ideas when you think about it.

How Can Any of these Help Experts-Who-Speak (or those Aspiring)?

Now if you’re (still) wondering about how any of this can help experts-who-speak, I offer some insights, as one who is currently doing it.

I’m already getting invitations to deliver my talks on entrepreneurship here in Benin. Most people in the first set of audiences I’ll be addressing, are English speakers with a desire to learn French (many being from Ghana and Nigeria).

I plan to deliver my messages to them in a mix of both English and French – sharing anecdotes about my experiences in learning French.

Interestingly, this same foreign language skill is what attracts French speaking career persons, professionals and entrepreneurs out here to me. Many have told me how they would love to make themselves understood in English, they way I do in French.

When I complain that my French is bad, and that I need to improve it, they counter “Mais tu parles deja!” (i.e. “But you speak already!”). So they insist I speak English to them.

This “imperfect” language skill of mine already gets me noticed, making my offers compelling (especially since I also market a product to help others develop similar competence). But I refuse to rest on my oars. Using ideas described here, I continue working hard to improve.

Simply put therefore, a bilingual speaker often gets set apart from the crowd. She can explore opportunities (or joint ventures for learning events) in markets where her preferred languages are spoken. Her rivals who lack similar skills would be locked out.

Final Words: To Get Better Results, Do Something Radically Different

More importantly, to stay ahead of rivals and copycats, choose something they cannot easily replicate. In my opinion a foreign language skill would be a perfect weapon.

As I earlier noted, I’m currently practicing what I’m preaching, by traveling slowly across West Africa, as a Location Independent Entrepreneur.

We have more French speaking countries in West Africa, than English speaking ones. To explore Francophone markets for business opportunities, it therefore goes without saying that a working knowledge of French will come in quite handy.

Having learnt to speak, read and write French back in 1999, I’ve found it easy to functionally integrate into business life here in Benin Republic. And my newly launched Quick & Dirty English-French language guide for career persons and business owners is helping me connect faster with my target audience, resulting in new alliances and clients.

TIP: Make yourself a helpful resource to clients and prospects with language needs. Indeed to anyone with such needs. Doing so has endeared me to many English loving French speakers since I arrived here in Benin Republic. And they’ve introduced me to their networks of friends and associates, earning me increased visibility and credibility.

Interestingly, I’m now looking to return to Nigeria intermittently to offer my new range or products and services with a twist, that competitors will find hard to match!

You can do the same thing in your country and continent – wherever you may be. Learn French, Italian, Spanish or Chinese etc – to achieve the outcomes described above.

Good luck!

3 Reasons YOU Need To Learn Public Speaking

It may sound like I’m pushing it a bit here. But I honestly feel, based on over ten years of personal experience, that the practice of public speaking confers multiple life changing benefits on. In this issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter, I outline 3 specific ways in which learning public speaking can help you make the most of YOUR life.

Important Note: By the term “public speaking”, I am not restricting myself, in this piece, to acts in which a speaker has to step up on a platform to deliver a formal speech. Instead, I refer as well to those instances in daily social life, in which individuals use their speaking skills to exert influence and leadership on others – directly or indirectly. And this includes one on one interactions, as well as small or large group situations.

Having made that clarification, let’s get started.

No. 87: 3 Reasons YOU Need To Learn Public Speaking!

**********

From our early years in school, to the working years and even after retirement (when we become “senior citizens”), the ability to speak acceptably attracts rewards and benefits in various forms. I explore 3 key examples below:

1. Increased Friendships and Personal Influence

“Speakers – especially successful ones – are often people who tend to know a lot of other people from various walks of life. And that effectively gives them access to potentially powerful channels of influence – even power” – Tayo K. Solagbade

A natural outcome of being a public speaker (especially if you deliver results) is that you’ll get invited to many different places. After every event, it’s likely that new connections will be made during the interactions that follow after the event.

Think about any public speaking personality you know. You’ll agree with me that many literally grow a wide network of often influential friends, and contacts as they go along.

The best part is that you can never be sure who will be in your audience. Sometimes you’ll speak at an event and afterwards get called to meet with a known name or influential personality in your field or industry, who happened to be attending that event.

If you impress often enough, such people may begin to refer to you in interactiing with others. Over time, you’ll find yourself being courted by others based on those references.

Just as this can happen for self-employed speaking professionals, it can also work for career persons who deliver presentations to senior colleagues in organizational settings. In the same way, young people in tertiary institutions (and even high school) can achieve similar results.

Every opportunity you have to address influential others in groups, or as individuals, can be exploited to achieve interpersonal impact that gets you noticed.

If you do it right, that impact can attract useful friendships to you, increasing your sphere of personal influence. For instance, a simple mention of your name – or sighting of your face – could make someone waive a rule (or fee) for you to get something you want.

2. Leadership and Career Success

In school participating in class, engaging in club activities, contesting for elective office, and so on. All require speaking and influencing other students. Deliberate study and practice of the art of public speaking by any school age person – possibly with coaching provided by reasonably competent adult (e.g. parents) – will equip her to excel amongst her peers.

It is assumed here that she will of course have the needed competence to carry out relevant tasks in each area of endeavor. In some cases, as key ability required for success will be that same public speaking competence e.g. as president of the student’s union or debating society, articulating convincing arguments in favor of position or cause.

A young person who does the above – even if not successful – will have received good preparatory foundation on which to build when she enters adult society. Quite often she will have a competitive edge over her peers in this area.

It is worth noting that recruiting companies usually prefer to young people who demonstrate evidence of having been active in that manner during their schooling years. Reason: It shows they already have useful skills and experience in leading and influencing others by asserting themselves.

3. Recognition and Fulfillment

One of the most powerful ways public speaking benefits a person is the opportunity it gives you to serve others by helping them succeed by sharing what’s worked for you.

In my opinion, there’re nothing better than being able to help others discover how to improve themselves using your ideas and knowledge. That kind of investment never fails to yield returns in multiple fold – not just to you, but also to your offspring.

“It is only as we develop others that we succeed permanently” – Harvey Firestone.

A good example of the goodwill that notable public speaking accomplishment attracts is the goodwill that Femi Kuti (and his younger brother Seun) enjoy as the offspring of the legendary Afro beat musician and firebrand Nigerian human rights activist – Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

In the same way, Tom Ziglar is accorded significant recognition today as Zig Ziglar’s offspring. None of this diminishes in any way, the accomplishments of these individuals in their own right. The point being made is that the public speaking successes of their parents provided a unique competitive advantage for them to launch their own careers successfully.

And such parents, more often than not, experience significant fulfillment while alive. I believe that’s a noble goal to aim for. That is, to achieve success, recognition for ones self, that can be built upon by those who come after us – like our offspring.

Final Words: This True Story Illustrates How Speaking Competently Can Literally Open Doors for YOU!

I feel it would be appropriate to include an example of how the above benefits can manifest. As usual I use personal examples not to brag, but to re-enforce my message.

In late 2002, I appeared on a popular Saturday morning show in Lagos, Nigeria called “Morning Ride” on NTA 2 Channel 5.

Mr Tunde Fajemisin, then Programmes Manager had put me on the show to answer questions about my little book titled “Proven 5 Step Formula for Learning ANY Language in 3 Months or LESS!”. I wrote that book based on my experiences in learning to read, write and speak French in 1999.

During the show, I had to field random questions, asked in rapid fire fashion, from a veteran presenter Sadiq Daba. At a point, Sadiz said “Oh, you’re an interviewer’s delight!” – his exact words. That told me I’d done a fairly good job with his questions

That Outing Was To Yield A Quick Pay Off On The Following Monday

(NB: I should note that it actually yielded results before Monday because my sister called me that weekend that her friend called her to say she saw me on TV, and wanted a copy of my book. Same happened with my mother, whose friend called her. And others.)

2 days later, I visited a bank in Surulere area of Lagos to cash a client’s cheque. But the security operative announced that it was after 4pm, and that they had closed to customers.

Now, I’ve never been one to take NO for an answer. It’s a habit that has gotten me many unexpected rewards. So I requested that he let me speak with one of the bank officers. He protested that nothing could be done. I politely insisted. Eventually, he went in to try.

To my surprise, the gentleman he returned with took one look at me and said “Hey, you were on Morning Ride on Saturday!” in an excited voice. Quite surprised, I replied that he was right. And that was all –he told the operative it was okay, and we went back in together, while he chatted with me about the show – and the book.

Now I know it’s not like anyone gave me a bag of money :-)

But at least I did not have to leave the bank without achieving my purpose for coming there. The next day I was able to set out without having to plan to re-visit the bank to cash that cheque!

In essence, I got what I wanted, when I wanted it. And it happens like that quite often, to competent public speakers.

Based on the above, you can see that you have more to gain – and nothing to lose – by investing a little time and effort to learn public speaking. A good place to start is by joining a toastmaster chapter in your area.

At some point, you may decide to step out of the amateur leagues to become an expert-who-gets-paid-to-speak, even internationally.

When that happens, consider learning from someone who – for over 25 years – has been a mentor of some of the highest paid speakers in the world. His name is Burt Dubin. Click here to send him a message. Tell him I sent you, and you’ll get a surprise offer.

Hi,

Please find below the latest issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter.

PUBLIC SPEAKING EXERCISE – To Aid French Speakers learning the English Language!

In collaboration with my team members, a special event will be organised here in Calavi (Benin Republic) for persons who purchase copes of this guide i.e. French speakers who want to learn to speak English.

They will write short (one page) speeches in their favoured French Language, and we will help them translate to English. They will then be coached to deliver the English versions of their speeches to audiences as a way of helping them gain better grasp of the language.

This is an exercise I have personally benefitted from. My plan is to engage the support of sponsors – including my contacts in the local TV stations here, to publicise this event, to organise it for as many groups as are interested.

For details of how to get a copy of the guide (on CD/DVD or via download), send me a message via this form

What would you do if as the invited speaker for an event, you make the mistake of travelling (by air) to the right city, but in the wrong state, less than 12 hours to the event? That’s what happened to Burt Dubin in 1983!

As a mentor of world class speakers (for over 25 years), Burt encourages his protégés to be students of life – and to share their mistakes, in order to better connect with their audiences. In this teleseminar, Burt practices what he preaches by telling that story in a teleseminar hosted by Bryan Caplovitz of Speaker Match Radio.

What follows is a text transcript version I created from the audio.

Byran: In addition to being diligent and having tenacity, is that another key factor that you think a speaker needs to have? They need to be a great storyteller?

Burt: …I would say that yes, but more important than that, be a student of life. I have been a student of life, eh ever since my father abused me as a child when I was four years old. That’s another story I don’t think we’ll get into at this time, but I’ve always studied the human condition right from the time I was a child, wondering why things are as they are.

And from this study, the opportunity came to observe and I must say, to grow wise.

And it is important to allow yourself to grow wise about what’s going on in your world. What’s going on in your country, in your city, durng your times. And from all of these, you can take a step back, if you can take a step back out of the arena, if only for a few minutes a day and watch what you see. And…harvest such wisdom as there may be for you.

You see the world through your eyes.

Your perception of truth is indeed your truth. And it is important Bryan, when we stand before audiences to share our perceived truth based on such wisdom as we may have.

And if you share it with passion. If you share it with enthusiasm. If you share it with deep belief. If you share your perceived truth with real ah enthuse..(ehm I’m looking for a certain word…I guess I’ve used the word).

It is this passion that carries your message home. You may not be right – so to speak – in the eyes of everyone in your audience, especially if you have  a political view. However at least they will be able to see that this is your perceived truth.

So we go back to authenticity.

It is importsant that YOU, the speaker, whoever the speaker may be – this is for everyone on the call – speak with authenticity about matters which you know well. Speak with authenticity about matters which you know well.

You may not always be right, but your perceptions are yours.

And what about when you make a mistake?

Oh heaven knows everyone of us makes mistakes. I’ve made 10,000 or more. We’ll take that word apart. Mistake. MIS – TAKE. A mistake is only a MIS – TAKE: what do they do in the movies, when there is a MIS – TAKE?  they do it over.

I’ll give you an example.

I remember the time  I showed up (laughs) in the right city but the wrong state to present a program. This really happened. 1983.

Bryan: Right city, wrong state?

Burt: (Laughs) Ha…Right city, wrong state. You wanna know what happened in that?

Bryan: Sure

Burt: It really did. I showed up in Burlinghton, Vermont, because I was working with a travel agent at the time. I was speaking 4 or 5 days a week. And I had my travel agent do all my bookings. And I got all my booking cities from the person in charge of  the seminar company for which I was then working, way back then.

And she always gave me my cities by name of city only. So I went to my trusted OAG – Official Airline Guide – and there was only one Burlington in the OAG, and it was in Burlington, Vermont!

So I had my travel agent book me into Burlington, Vermont ten o’clock one night. Called the Howard Johnson, and asked if they had transportation from the airport. The first thing I noticed was they had the wrong area code.

I’m not such a dummy. I was in line when the brains were given out!

I realized they did not have the wrong area code. I was in the wrong area code! So, ten o’clock at nite, they roll up the sidewalks in Vermont at nine o’clock at nite. No flights out until the next morning. I am in big trouble!

I find a room for the night. I don’t get to sleep, and I wake up the seminar coordinator, and I say “Hey where am I supposed to be this morning”. And she said it was a different Burlington. It happened to be Burlington Massachusetts!

Thank God it wasn’t Burlington Illinois, it woud have been really serious.

So in the middle of the night, I did what I had to do. Called Air Vermont, got a flight out at 6a.m, from Burlington Vermont, to Logan airport, in Boston, from which I could get a limo and an hour later I could be in Burlington, Massachusetts (Laughing) to do the program.

I went througth all of that. But I turned it into fun.

I happened to like… happen to love Vermont maple syrup – and I’m in Vermont! So I got up very early – I didn’t even go to sleep, I slept about an hour – and put on my clothes.

I found a coffee shop – an all nite coffee shop, and at 4 O’clock in the morning, I had hotcakes with Vermont maple syrup  – Oh boy was that perfect!

Then I hightailed it to the airport. I got to Logan airport by 7a.m. Got to the venue by 8a.m and they all said “Where are you? Where’ve you been Where did you sleep last nite?”(Laughing)

Anyway the program I presented on adrenaline – just adrenaline – I got no sleep – was one of the best programs I ever did (Laughs). I thought you might like that little story.

Bryan: (Laughs) Ha ha…at least you remember it that way!

Burt: No..hey man that’s the way it was!

Bryan: So, that is another example of telling a great story. Do you includes stories like this of your life experiences, even when presenting your standard workshop or something?

Burt: Always. You see they are the lubricants. They…You know lubricant makes the wheel of commerce go round. These are the lubricants, they humanize you.

People love to hear about your mistakes!

FREE PDF REPORT: How to Get Kick As* Clients – By Jason Leister (www.artofclients.com)

FREE REPORT: How to Get Kick As* Clients - By Jason Leister (www.artofclients.com)

Just as I was putting finishing touches to the 15th April 2013 issue of this newsletter, Jason Leister’s e-mail broadcast to subscribers popped into my Blackberrry messages window.

Amazingly – in a theme consistent with that issue – he announced that he’s giving away his highly rated “How to Get Kick As* Clients” PDF report for FREE. Not optin required. Nothing.

Now Jason’s email offer’s arrival is an excellent example of one of those “coincidences” I mentioned will happen IF you take diligent action!

All he asks in return is that we spread the word about his PDF. That’s why I’m doing this. And it’s also why I’ll be creating a permanent link to it via a thumbnail image on my website.

Yes, that’s how much value I place on it: You see, in a tribute blog I published last year, I listed Michel Fortin as one of 5 mentors whose works really influenced me (another is Burt Dubin). It so happens that Michel has read Jason’s PDF. His review tells me it’s a gold mine. Period.

I intend to do my bit to see that Jason gets rewarded for his generousity. So click here to get your copy now – and don’t forget to spread the word. That’s ALL he asks. It’s the least we can all do…and it’s good Karma too :-)

Why I’ve Told LinkedIn to Delete My Profile (Talk About Trying to Give a Dog a Bad Name to Hang It)

UPDATE: Isn’t it just amazing? I sent the request for linkedIn.com support to delete my tayo@spontaneousdevelopment.com profile at 13.05pm on 19th April 2013, and after failing to reply my previous email sent more than 24 hours earlier, I get a response confirming my request has been carried out at 13.11pm on the SAME day.

An amazingly quick reply from Linkedin.com - a record judging by my experience with their support department - funny they should do this in response to my request to have my account deleted...LOL!

Wow! Talk about SELECTIVELY speedy response. Oh, by the way, she also added: “If you change your mind, just let us know”. Sigh…what a pity!!!

=====

It’s unfortunate, but this post has to happen – because the guys at LinkedIn.com seem unprepared to be fair and impartial in their dealings with me – for whatever reason. I’ve never been shy about voicing my opinion. And the last thing ANYONE can ever succeed in doing is put me down or intimidate me. Those who have had dealings with me know this for a fact. I also have a habit of going out of my way to help others I discover to be on the receiving end of any form of abuse, or unfair treatment.

As I type these words, I have not heard from them with regard to my request for details of the “suspicious activities” they claim they noticed in my account.

How difficult can it be to specify EXACTLY what it was they saw that was a violation of their terms of use?

I have asked them, they have not replied. I thought it had to do with the discovery I made this week – see below – but in the response they gave me, it is apparently not. Yet, they will not tell me what it is I did wrong.

Now what’s that about I ask???

Ever since I wrote my post titled “If You Can’t Find Me On LinkedIn.com, Here’s Why…” last month, I have patiently waited to hear from them about removing the restriction placed on my profile. This was after I’d sent the the copies of my passport as requested within 48 hours of receiving their email.

Guess what? A few days ago, I wrote to inform them I noticed I’d received a surprising email update via my olufeltks at yahoo dot com email address from LinkedIn.com.

As you will notice in the screenshot below, I noted that that was an account I’d opened over 10 years ago, and never used. It was therefore surprising that I was getting updates on it – it did not even have ANY data on the profile page!

Asking them to delete that old profile, I noted that the updates for that account and my real account at tayo at spontaneousdevelopment.com could have both been coming into my blackberry (since I setup my smartphone to receive mails from them).

I told them it was possible that was what they saw as “suspicious” activity in my account – since I may have clicked on a link on it accidentally before making this discovery that the notification was for a different address. Having said that, considering I’ve been using my blackberry with LinkedIn.com for over a year now, I expect a problem would have come up BEFORE now if the old account had been sending me messages like this.

The way I see it, this only began recently – possibly last month. I am VERY careful in dealing with such notifications – which is why in my first post on this last month, I was able to detect the scam LinkedIn notifications that I displayed in it.

Note that I also mentioned in my email to them, that in the 10 years since that profile was created I had NOT logged in even once – I did not even know it still existed and even if I tried I would be unable to recall the password.

More importantly, I only began trying to use LinkedIn for business about 3 years ago – via tayo at spontaneousdevelopment dot com

What really got me ticked off was the reply I got from the LinkedIn rep. She wrote back confirming she had deleted the yahoo! email based profile as I requested and then proceeded to REPEAT the same message they had originally sent me about the “suspicious” activity they claimed to have noticed in my real account.

What was worse, she then requested that I send a scanned copy of my passport to them: something I’d done and inserted screenshots of in my post dating back to 19th of March!

To cap it off, I’ve NOT heard a word from her since I sent an immediate reply. In that reply, I forwarded a copy of the mail I’d sent with the passport on 19th March, asking why she was AGAIN requesting me to send it, without even acknowledging the one I’d sent before!

Not one word from her up till this moment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When I sent that first email on Monday 15th April telling them about the 10 year old profile, I got (as I have always gotten) an autoresponse confirming the email reached them). But when I sent my second email in which I pointed out that I got autoresponse confirmation when I sent in copies of my passport on 19th March, and that I was sure it reached them, guess what happened? THE AUTORESPONSE FOR THAT EMAIL NEVER CAME TO ME!

The Yoruba’s would say “Ejo eleyi oni owo ninu O!” Translated contextually, that means: “There’s more to this than meets the eye!

As you will find from reading the screenshot copies of the 2 emails I sent them this week, I made it clear that if I did not hear from them, by today 19th April 2013, that this matter had been resolved, I would want them to delete my profile PERMANENTLY from their website.

This post is therefore meant to notify visitors to this website not to henceforth bother clicking on the LinkedIn.com share icons provided. I’ll be exploring ways to get rid of it. But in the meantime, please do not bother clicking on it.

One thing I’ve learnt from using the web is that it’s NEVER smart to put yourself in a position where others can dictate what happens to you. That’s why smart people don’t set themselves up to be messed up by the next Google algorithm overhaul.

In my honest opinion, I believe these guys made up their minds I was guilty without even trying to verify if that was so. They took action without regard for the impact it would have on my image as a person promoting myself and my products for others to buy from me.

That’s unfortunate. Like they say in my language (Yoruba), there are many routes that you can follow to get to the market:

I no longer wish to follow the LinkedIn route. Period.

Below: Screenshots from the emails exchanged with the representative this week:

Final Words

Did you notice that in her first – and only – response above, she said she looked forward to my response in order to further assiste me.

Well, like I said  above, when I responded this time around, protesting that I had proof that my email bearing image copies of my passport had reached them last month, no autoresponse came, and she has not replied since.

This is exactly what happened last month (see my first post on this), when I sent the passport images the first time. They never replied – even though I go the autoresponse. And they still did not reply when I wrote a follow up 2 weeks later , to which I also go an autoresponse. A screenshot copy of that follow up email is provided  my first post on this issue.

Like I said above: Ejo eleyi oni owo ninu O!

I’m done here :-)

Use Persuasion to Save (or Make) MORE Money (3 Tips)

The core message in this week’s issue of my newsletter is that you never know what you can get, until you try…or ask. If you always accept what you’re told – be it price or options – you may end up shortchanging yourself in life.

Virtually everything can be negotiated. And if your persuasion skills are well honed, great bargains or deals can be yours. The fact that you have the money does not mean you should spend it! If an opportunity exists to pay less, take it. Nothing is cast in stone.

Remember that, when you’re buying, selling, leasing, renting – indeed in all your interactions. This article 3 ideas you can use, including examples my recent experiences out here in Benin Republic (full details – with photos – in an update I’ll publish here).

1. Save Money When Buying Products & Services

Who says you always have to pay what the seller gives you as the official or standard price? Indeed who says you have to pay at all?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not asking you to go around trying to cheat people. Instead I ask you to think before you shell out cash for everything you want. Quite often, there will be a viable alternative to spending cash – that even the seller you confront may LIKE, but has not yet thought of. Challenge him on possible alternatives. You could be surprised.

The self-confidence you develop from public speaking can help you get what you want at low or even zero cost. Asking is not a crime. Just open your mouth and ask if there’s a way you can have a product, service or item at something other than the stated price.

I’ve successfully applied variants of this strategy to get what I want at low – sometimes ZERO – cost. And that includes getting myself featured on TV (twice), and in a newspaper (half-page feature).

Examples/Suggestions:

a. After 2 weeks here in Benin Republic, I’ve already applied this strategy to secure rented accommodation for myself at a fourth of the going rate – with ALL the normal facilities included. It took some searching, but it was well worth it: No more hotel bills!

b. Do you know that you do NOT have to hire space for every speaking event? No you don’t. I know because I’ve done it – and seen others do it. Simply do some thinking – and research – to discover potential venues. Then approach them with proposals to pay low to zero cash via some form of barter exchange.

c. Be sure to approach those who do not even offer their properties for such use. It’s possible they have not thought of it. When you make your proposal to them, the opportunity to make extra income could appeal to them. And most times, they will be willing to accept less payment than those who do it commercially!

d. The above also applies to staying in hotels. Under certain conditions, you can get FREE room in hotels.

I’ve got many ideas you can use. Get in touch if you want specific details.

2. Make More Money From Clients/Buyers

In every business the need to negotiate fees or prices will periodically arise. It could be with an old client or a new prospect. Knowing how to articulate your arguments is essential to a successful negotiation.

For long term benefits, you must leave the other party feeling good even when you have your way. That means you must be good at expressing the benefits accruable to her in a way that persuades her it’s a win-win.

Your speaking proficiency will be an asset in this regard. How well you do it, can determine how much you make. It goes without saying that your offers will be good!

TIP: When a prospect demands for a price reduction, don’t just cave in. Remember to offer options of other useful benefits as an added incentive, to keep the price the same. Many people will be glad to pay what you ask if they perceive that that extra is worthwhile.

In addition, sometimes – as Jason Leister notes (get a FREE copy of his highly rated “How to Get Kick As* Clients” PDF below) – you can even use questions to help a client discover other services you offer, that can help her achieve a valued goal. And that could make her gladly extend the project scope: meaning more money for you!

3. Generate Additional Income Via Passive Streams

The more you speak, the more people will know you in your market or niche. Public speaking is a reliable way to get “famous” in your target market – for what you know/do.

As your name recognition grows, you can use it to sell items that generate passive income for you even when you do not speak. This would be by producing learning resources based on your expertise – and drawing from speaking events you host.

Examples: Video and audio versions of your talks, or other learning programmes, as well as educational resources (books, courses, reports etc).

Every expert-who-speaks can – and should – do this. Otherwise, you waste a valuable opportunity to earn more with little or no extra effort. If you’re good enough to get invited and paid to speak, you’re good enough to have your products purchased even when you do not speak!

Final Words: There Are Forces Waiting To Help You – But Only If You Act!

Everything I’ve said above has to do with persuading others. Your speaking proficiency will be your greatest asset in doing this. The more effective you are as a speaker, the greater will be your chances of saving or making money by persuading others.

If you’re not currently doing any public speaking, you’re missing out on an excellent opportunity to earn more, and spend less, while expending little effort and time.

You don’t need any special qualifications to succeed as a speaker. Just develop expertise on a subject you have a passion for.

Burt Dubin, widely acknowledged today as a leading authority on the business of public speaking, points out on his website that he’s a high school drop out. Like he says “ Oh boy, if I can do it, then so can you!

With solid preparation (which a seasoned mentor, like Burt, can help you with) and a message that won’t stay untold, you can get paid to speak to audiences locally and even internationally.

LASTLY, an important point that must be highlighted:

With the right mental attitude, each of one of us can earn support from providence, to achieve our goals. Just play your part by diligently implementing your plans. Then watch the “coincidences” happen (scroll down to read a real-life example of a “coincidence” that happened just before I sent this newsletter out to you!)

My recent comment on a Facebook thread (screen shot below) provides additional insights, and a fitting conclusion with regard to the foregoing:

My recent comment on a Facebook thread (screenshot below) elaborates on how each of us can earn support from providence

FREE PDF REPORT: How to Get Kick As* Clients – By Jason Leister (www.artofclients.com)

FREE REPORT: How to Get Kick As* Clients - By Jason Leister (www.artofclients.com)

Just as I was putting finishing touches to this newsletter, Jason Leister’s e-mail broadcast to subscribers popped into my Blackberrry messages window.

Amazingly – in a theme consistent with this issue – he announced that he’s giving away his highly rated “How to Get Kick As* Clients” PDF report for FREE.

Why 30 out of 31 Aspiring Speakers Do Not Succeed (2 Tips) – By Burt Dubin

According to Burt Dubin (who has mentored some of the highest paid International Speakers in the world – some becoming  CSPs i.e. Certified Speaking Professionals), it is a lack of the two qualities discussed in this issue that often makes 30 out of 31 wannabe speakers fail. What follows is my paraphrased version of Burt’s discussion. It’s based on excerpts transcribed from a SpeakerMatch Radio teleseminar hosted by Brian Caplovitz (the host). I call it a “mined transcript version”.

According to Burt Dubin (who has mentored some of the highest paid International Speakers in the world – some becoming  CSPs i.e. Certified Speaking Professionals), it is a lack of the two qualities discussed in this issue that often makes 30 out of 31 wannabe speakers fail. I’ll also be offering more of what I call “mined transcript versions” of certain audio messages that offer useful valuable knowledge for persons looking for speaking success

***************************************

1. They Lack Resolute Tenacity

The Speaking Industry Has Changed Over 30 Years, But the Need for RESOLUTE TENACITY Has Not

Bryan noted that Burt Dubin (his guest on SpeakerMatch Radio) had been around for about 3 decades. During this period, lots of changes had occurred in the speaking industry, in contrast to what obtained when Burt got started around 30 years earlier.

He added that one thing Burt said had not changed in all that time, was (and is) the need for tenacity – resolute tenacity.

From here on, I paraphrase Burt Dubin…

This Speaking Business (and you need to think of it as a business to succeed) is not an easy business. It is the most difficult business I’ve ever been in, and the most rewarding.

Most people do not succeed. I repeat: Most people do not succeed. My own rule of thumb –note that this is just empirical – is that about 30 out of 31 people that enter the business dreaming of success, big money fine restaurants and all of that, do not make it.

And the primary reason that people do not make is a lack of tenacity.

It’s takes tenacity. It takes bulldog blood. Now you may not know exactly what I mean by bulldog blood. So let me tell you a short story which will illustrate that:

Suppose there’s a bad guy approaching your house with an ominous look on his face – and you own a bulldog.

The bulldog sees this bad guy approaching, and attacks him, bites him hard in the ankle. Well this bad guy has a nice big knife. He stabs your beloved bulldog and sadly ends the dog’s life.

The dog is dead now. And he thinks well now I can get into the house and do my harm.

But that dog’s teeth do not let go their grip even in death! It takes the police finally with the jaws of life of the fire dept to pry those teeth away from his leg.

That is tenacity; it is never giving up regardless of what!

If You Give Up, You’ll Never Make It To The Big Time!

If you do give up as most people do, you doom yourself to live in the mire of mediocrity. You might make it to the K-marts of the speaking business, the low end programs in the darkest room or the farthest hall in the hotel.

I’ve done those in my early days :-)

But you never make it to the big room. You never make it to the big time. You never make it to not having to look on the right side of the menu (where the price is stated).

How To Develop Your Personal Tenacity

Now the question comes up – how to develop your personal tenacity?

It’s a matter of defying your demons.

What are these demons?

Anything in the way of your actualizing your potential is a demon. As a speaker, your purpose will be to make a difference in the lives of people and affairs of organizations.

Anything that gets in the way is a demon!

All you can do is be incorrigible to an extreme, letting nothing, but nothing, get in your way!

Only 1 in 30 i.e. 3%, have this quality. But anyone can develop it – including you.

2. They Lack Authenticity

Tenacity Is Not All That It Takes – You Also Need Authenticity.

You need a lot more than tenacity. It takes among other things, being authentic on the platform. It takes revealing your true essence as you stand before audiences. Standing before them say psychologically unclothed. Here I am folks, warts and all, with all my human frailties.

You see it is not so much the words you say important though those words may be; it is not your stories, entertaining those stories may be; it is not your humor, hilarious though it may be.

What it is, is your essence…your core.

And you cannot hide this from people. It reveals itself…they just know it. Whether they’re looking at you or hearing you speak on the phone.

Your state of being is something you cannot conceal. Stand before people knowing you’re an imperfect being. Imperfect though you are, you may have wonderful ideas to share with them.

To Develop Your Authenticity, Make Yourself A Model of The Possible

And so the important thing is that you make of yourself as you stand before the audience, for that matter as you live your life, as a model of the possible.

Think of the Greek statues that you may remember from your ancient history. They were physically models of the possible.

Gene Houston – years and years ago – wrote a book called The Possible Human. I don’t even know if the book is still in print. However, if you make it your ideal, to be the possible human, the ultimate possible human…you will move ahead faster.

Again Mahatma Ghandi. A very famous quote, by Mahatma Ghandi – Be the change you want to see in the world. What is the population of the ideal world? How do the ideal people conduct themselves? Be that person.

Make yourself accountable for your presence here. In fact, be the authentic you, as you share your wisdom.

You can be an ordinary person (I’m an ordinary person) and you can share extraordinary concepts. Simple as that.

Summary

In essence I’ve talked about what they’re not telling you in speaking business school. In the speaker school you get told to make a demo CD and compile a list of prospects. That’s standard procedure to build your business.

What is however (often) left out is the need for resolute tenacity and authenticity, which I’ve highlighted here. You need those 2 to make your speaking business really take off.

Final Words: Once You Have Tenacity & Authenticity, What’s Next?

If you’re an aspiring speaker reading this, it is assumed that you at least have the skill to speak in front of an audience. (If not, join Toastmasters, and start learning, or get a competent mentor to help you.)

Once you have tenacity and authenticity, another quality you need to develop, in order to become one of the very few who succeed as speakers is described here (click now).

And while you’re at it, if anyone tells you that you can’t, read this past issue of the Speaking IDEAS newsletter titled “How to Do the Impossible (5 Tips You Can Use)” to discover why they would be wrong!

Update: Checked into hotel (Why I’m keeing my destinations and location secret for now)

Hi,

I’ve just checked into a hotel room in the capital of a Francophone West African nation. You have take my word for it for now that I AM really outside Nigeria :-)

At least my family knows I’m telling the truth – as does Burt Dubin who I’ve already emailed from my Blackberry on arrival.

About Blood Sucking Vampires

Later in the week I’ll explain why I’ve kept my destinations and location a “secret” for now: it’s due to the activities of people Chris Guillebeau says a friend of his called “Blood sucking vampires who want you to fail”. More on this later in the week.

Thanks to Burt Dubin for letting me know the link to the newsletter in the first email broadcase that went out this morning  was bad. Here’s the newsletter proper.

I hope you enjoy reading it.

Hunting for the Super Star Commercial Rabbit Farmer

I’m going out to find my 700,000 rabbit breeding entrepreneur based in this city tomorrow morning. My plan is to request an interview with him, which I’ll publish as a video, audio and text. Then I also intend to see if I can get his consent to use photographs from his facility (which I’ve seen in videos) in my work in progress guide on Commercial Rabbit Farming.

Hooking Up With Handballers

I’ve discovered Handball courts looking in excellent condition out here – and a lot of people seem to know about the game. That’s great because I intend hooking up with active players to see if I can join them in training. That’s a strategy I’ve found quite effective for breaking myself in whenever I’ve travelled. When people see that you’re a lover (better still a  competitive player) of their sport, they warm up to you.

There’s Power Supply!

Oh yeah…in case you’re in Nigeria, and wondering: YES, there’s electricity. And YES the people take it for granted. They expect to have it. I’m certainly glad I don’t have to plan to stop over at the fuel station this evening to buy fuel into  kegs for my generator!

Got some work to do tonight – have to create a slideshow presentation for meetings I’ll be having later in the week.

See you later – will upload the photos I’ve taken later in the week.

How to Jump Start Your Speaking Career (7 Steps) – By Burt Dubin

NEWS (Nigeria) : Expert Jump Starts International Speaking Career by Traveling Across West Africa as a Location Independent Entrepreneur.

This issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter is based on text transcript excerpts I created from Burt Dubin’s recorded responses to a question from a caller to a SpeakerMatch teleseminar.  Sandy (according to the host – Brian Caplovitz) called in saying “she was a great speaker but no one knew her, and she wanted to know what steps she could take, to jump start her career”.

From here on, you have my partly paraphrased version of Burt’s response…

Now this will not be an encyclopaedic answer…It will be the best I can give you in a couple of minutes.

1. You Absolutely Must Have, Must Have, Must Have A Website

No. 83: How to Jump Start Your Speaking Career (7 Steps) – By Burt Dubin

**********

NEWS (Nigeria) : Expert Jump Starts International Speaking Career by Traveling Across West Africa as a Location Independent Entrepreneur.

This issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter is based on text transcripts excerpts I created from Burt Dubin‘s recorded responses to a question from a caller to a SpeakerMatch teleseminar. Sandy (according to the host – Brian Caplovitz) called in saying “she was a great speaker but no one knew her, and she wanted to know what steps she could take, to jump start her career“.

From here on, you have my partly paraphrased version of Burt’s response…

Now this will not be an encyclopaedic answer…It will be the best I can give you in a couple of minutes.

1. You Absolutely Must Have, Must Have, Must Have A Website

I’m not going to tell you how to build a website here. But do research. See what other speakers’ websites are about. Look at my website burtdubin.com – well it’s not so much a speaker’s website, as a speaker’s mentor’s website.

There are however principles there. Among the principles, be live on your website. I’m live on my website! You’ll see me there. And say the things to respond to the interests of the people who are your market.

Don’t talk about how good you are. Rather refer to the various ways in which you make them look good and be good. Speak about benefits for them, and not about you.

2. Start an E-zine

For example I have an e-zine. Mine happens to be a monthly. It’s out there every month normally as a rule. Usually goes out the first Tuesday of the month (I sometimes miss by a couple of days).

So have an e-zine, and in that e-zine address issues and concerns of interest to the market that you serve. And somewhere in there, invite them to contact you to talk about engaging you, to speak, to train, ah to educate – whatever it may be that you do.

To signup for my e-zine, see the end of this article.

3. Develop Personal Qualities That Will Make You Succeed

You need to deeply believe in what you do. You need to have character. Strength of character. You need to have authenticity.

You also need to have integrity. Resolute integrity: There are no degrees in integrity. There’s no such…there’s no such thing as a partial virgin. You are or you aren’t. Well that’s how integrity is. You have it or you don’t!

If you have all of these things, and if you have “Fire in your belly”. If you absolutely will not give up – you will be reasonably equipped to get off to a good start.

Now on top of all that, there’s something else too…

4. Make Yourself An Expert On Something

Be an expert on something. Don’t be an expert on something people won’t pay for.

Be an expert on something the world needs.

If you deal on personal development, be an expert on something that helps people develop. If you deal with organizations and most of us do, then you must think in terms of what’s going on within the organization.

What do they want? Well let me tell you something about what organizations want.

Number one: They want return to shareholders. In other words they want to make money so they can pay their stockholders money.

Number two: They want the presidemt, the CEO, the managing director to look good.

These are the two top concerns.

There’s a third one: The Chief Executive, the CEO of the organization wants to look good himself or herself as the case may be.

How does this happen? By enhancing productivity. By enhancing profits, By enhancing sales. By market penetration.

Now I have just named 4 things: Productivity, profits, sales, market penetration by enhancing the ability, relationships, communication.

Now these are various topics which any speaker can learn about by doing research. Make of yourself an expert at some aspect of something organizations want.

Make yourself so skilled at understanding that, and then tie that in with what’s going on in that organization, within their market, among their people.

And do it with fluency, with passion, with deep belief.

5. Know The Major Market for Speakers & What Their Decision Makers Want

For speakers the major market is the Association Market – Professional and Trade Associations (especially in North America).

Let me tell you what is on the mind of the decision maker who can hire speakers for trade and professional associations.

More than anything else, they want perpetuation of dues income. Write that down. Perpetuation of dues income.

Why? Because dues are the oxygen of the organization.

Without dues they’ve got nothing. What do you do? What will you say that will help them get their members to renew every year?

What else do they want? They want members to come to the meetings.

This is because most associations…my own the National Speakers Association for instance, generates more revenue from their annual meetings than from their dues!

That’s how most associations are. Now if they want members to come to the meeting, what must they do?

They must give members value. They must invite speakers that will address issues close to the hearts, the interests, the needs, the challenges the concerns, of the people who are coming to the meeting.

6. Get Useful FREE Resources from My Website

If you want to be added to my list click here. You’ll see a little sign in form.

And not only will you start to receive the current issue when the next issue comes out. But there will be a place there to go to see on my blog, a year or 2 of past issues, all of which are free. All of which are good. All of which reek of wisdom, as does this transcript of my teleseminar call as a guest on Brian Caplovitz’s SpeakerMatch Radio.

I know you know that. No ego in that. It’s simply the truth.

Also on my website, you’ll find 35 downloadable and printable articles by me, all full of more speaking business wisdom. This is a passion of mine. This is what I’ve studied with the ardour of a lover. I don’t know how to put it, I just love this business!

And I love seeing people succeed in this business, and make the difference they wanna make in the world. And so get all of that stuff which is FREE – FREE, FREE, FREE! I won’t even know you’ve gotten it, because I don’t see who goes and downloads my stuff.

7. To Get Started Even Faster, You Can Hire Me!

And if you want, I am a Mentor for Speakers in Africa and across the world. You can send me an email and enquire(click now).

I have products that you can invest in, all with a one year money back guarantee. All of that. I won’t let anyone lose when they do business with me.

My clients succeed as you may know. You’ll see a bunch of blurbs by my clients (click here to view now  – some of them earning several hundred thousands dollars a year. And I’ll tell you this – with phone numbers by the way, these are real people!

So, get started jump starting your career…and Good luck! (If you need more inspiration, read this past issue of the Speaking IDEAS newsletter titled “How to Do the Impossible (5 Tips You Can Use)

**********

Many self-confident people seem to fear nothing. They often act as if they recognize no limitations. Even when they encounter rejection, or setbacks, they never take it personally. And they seem to be able to talk to anybody.

Are you self-confident? If no, think what it would mean personally to you i.e. limitless possibilities! In this week’s issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter, I offer ideas to help you build self-confidence that can change your life for better, and forever.

Being Self-Confident Will Make You Better in Every Area of Your Life

It’s amazing how people get drawn to someone who displays self-confidence. We see it happening all the time. People like someone who appears to be sure of him or herself.

You will reap rewards useful in your business.

As an expert or professional, if people who see and hear you get the impression that you’re not sure of yourself, you’ll lose credibility before them. The success of your business marketing depends on your ability to speak and act with self-confidence.

Not just in person, but also over the phone – and even when you do audio and video presentations.

So, for you as an expert, being seen by others to be self-confident means more potential clients/customers are likely to be attracted to you, boosting sales leads.

And you will also reap socially beneficial rewards.

Many confident often earn informal and sometimes formal leadership status in their personal and business circles. They get chosen to lead teams, to represent others, to champion causes etc.

These roles inadvertently help them achieve valuable name/brand recognition. Think about every successful speaker that you know. The above is true for them.

Here are three simple steps you can follow to build your self-confidence:

1. Start By Confronting & Conquering Your Fears

It’s an interesting irony – but it’s also the truth. What is it that scares you in your business or personal life? To gain self-confidence, go out and do those things. From today – now.

A common challenge for many experts is going out to speak to others about their products and services. Standing and speaking convincingly about what you know – without fear or anxiety – to strangers takes hard work (i.e. preparation) and courage.

But if you will yourself to do it the first time, and then keep on doing it afterwards, you’ll eventually stop feeling fear or anxiety.

Experiencing the thrill of standing before an appreciative audience can boost your self-esteem greatly. It makes you say to yourself: “Wow. I really can do this! People appreciate that I know this stuff!!

So, next time around, that exciting realization will drive you to prepare even better. And with each little “victory” (even if you’re not getting paid…yet), you’ll gain self-confidence. It’s as simple as that. Just like learning to walk as a baby :-)

2. Then Get Varied Experiences Under Your Belt

Some things may not scare you. Yet doing them could help you develop additional know-how, and that would boost your self-belief…your self-confidence.

In other words, to develop greater confidence, aim to explore new frontiers in life by having as many varied experiences as possible.

By this I mean hands-on experience.

If you lack insights gained from engaging directly in the practice or study of your subject, you will not be convincing when you speak: Your audiences will respond accordingly.

Speakers who succeed often tell stories and use analogies to explain their concepts or ideas to audiences. Now, many times a speaker’s choice of stories and analogies may not even be directly related to the theme of his/her message.

For example, in explaining the importance of diligence for persons seeking speaking success, Burt Dubin told stories about Jan Vermeer (a painter), and Colonel Sanders (the founder of Kentuck Fried Chicken).

If one were adopt a puritanical (or narrow) point of view, neither of those two stories has anything to do with helping someone learn how to be a better speaker.

However, by referring to Vemeer’s and Sanders’ diligence in pursuing their goal, Burt used their stories to illustrate how diligence can lead to success in the speaking business.

By implication therefore, a speaker who exposes himself to a wide variety of experiences (in real life, and through books) will harvest useful wisdom with which to communicate more effectively with audiences.

3. Go Out And Take Daily, Repeated Action

Do items 1 and 2 above, daily, weekly, monthly – as frequently as possible. Sooner than later, you will forget your fears, and develop unconscious familiarity with your subject.

You would have become one with your message, and would be bursting with the urge to share it, knowing that you have a limitless well of insights to give.

That’s when even if you’re woken up at 2 a.m, you would still be able to speak convincingly on your subject without rehearsing.

Once you attain that state of mind, your self-confidence will manifest itself spontaneously, anytime you perceive a speaking opportunity, be it with an individual, or before a packed auditorium!

Final Words: Speakers Are Self-Confident People – To Succeed, YOU Must Be That Way Too!

Professional public speakers are some of the most self-confident people one can find anywhere. To do what they do, as well as they do it, they have to be that way.

Yet many will tell you they were never always like that. Indeed before achieving success, quite a number admitted lived in morbid fear of ever having to stand before others, to give even the shortest speech.

That means it is doable for YOU too. The truth is, you will NOT succeed as a speaker if you constantly come across as being insecure and/or unsure of yourself!

Having said that, you become self-confident by just thinking about it. Start putting the ideas you’ve read here to immediate use. Then get more from reliable sources like this one. And you’ll soon be well on your way.
