Category Archives: My Ideas for Making Nigeria Better

Stop Being Fatalistic: You Are Not Powerless – No One Can Exploit You, Unless You Let Them!

This article was inspired by a few comments I read (some reproduced below) on a Sahara Reporters news story discussion thread in which contributors warned a certain individual about the dangers of resisting attempts (as he’d proposed) by crooked Nigerian Policemen to illegally get money off you.

One wrote:

“never joke with nigeria police oooo they can. even sell you out to the ritualist its better to settle. them with immediate effect!”

Another shared:

“Most of them are hungry men. They can frame you up if you don’t cooperate with them.”

Both views and similar others are not just wrong, but they are also misleading – YES, even in Nigeria!

I just could not leave without posting my thoughts/sharing my experiences of how to do it right.

It’s a personal vision I have, to influence the thinking habits of others in dealing with real life challenges they come up against.

Too many people readily let their circumstances defeat them – especially in Nigeria.

The irony is these same people equally readily assert that the have “faith” in the almighty Creator – through whom they often loudly assert that they “can do all things”.

However, most of them fail to see this massive contradiction between the claim they make and the attitude they adopt to achieving their goals in life!

Someone has to tell – and help (not judge) them.

And that’s why I write stuff like this, and also walk my talk everywhere I go – to offer a real world relevant example they can relate to.

So I began writing with the intention of posting a comment. But I soon found myself being led, not for the first time, to elaborate in my submission so as to help those who read my words really understand how to do what I propose, and why doing so is ultimately in their best interest.

Before I knew it, I had a full bodied article written up, and I realized it would no longer fit in as a comment.

So, as has happened in the past, I decided to publish it on this blog and then post a preview/excerpt with the URL into the comments field in that discussion thread.

Here’s my take on how to think/act in dealing with agents of corruption:

No it’s not better to settle Police in Nigeria. Giving in to injustice of that kind is a sign that YOU do no know the power you have as a child of the Creator.

I’m 46 today, and I was raised in Lagos, where I now also have my own family even as I travel to/fro Cotonou.

I have had sooooooo many encounters with police and other men in uniform – within Nigeria and outside. While driving and on foot. At midnight and during the day.

Guess what? Not once have I ever given 1 kobo bribe – no matter their antics.

Most of them found me to be their worst nightmare.

At checkpoints, the border etc: My refusal to be cowed, and to boldly ask questions/assert myself without being combative, often made them let me be.

I once had angry armed uniformed policemen seize my laptop from me and placing it in the trunk of their unmarked rickety car drive off with it for over an hour, to God-knows-where, after trying without success to shake me down for money.

I refused to panic and just sat down on a bench where they’d left me. Eventually their superior officer, an inspector strolled into the area and asked what I was waiting for. I told him what had transpired. He replied that my “argumentative” attitude must have offended them, adding:

“you know they have been in the sun all day, so they may get easily irritated.”

When his men returned he called out and asked that they return my laptop to me. Then he gave me his mobile phone number, which I deliberately requested while the officers were still there – looking vexed!

Another time at the same Seme border, some immigration officers who I’d refused to give money to have my passport stamped said they suspected I was a State Security Service (SSS) agent or journalist under cover.

I always tell the truth: I am neither a security agent nor journalist, and I do not have connections anywhere.

Instead. I am just an ordinary citizen like any others.

But my faith in the Creator, makes me sure that He will always protect me against evil doers who try to hurt me.

That’s why I never hesitate to say NO to disagreeable demands from any quarters.

This includes potentially abusive clients/others who have tried in the past (unsuccessfully) to intimidate me into doing their will at my expense.

I’ve shared in a past article, for instance, the true story of a wealthy client who used his connections with corrupt police officers to cook up phony accusations against me in a bid to get me to do more work on a project without paying the fees I’d told him were due.

People told me not to, but I stubbornly refused to give in, and kept reaching out for help, until I was led via a Google search to discover a government funded agency who provided me zero cost support till the issue was resolved. And YES, I did get my payment, after which I formally notified the client via email that I no longer wished to serve his company anymore. The rest is history as they say.

Today, some of those uniformed agents who tried to extort money from me have become “friendly” with me, after they ended up losing out or looking stupid.

Some exchanged phone numbers with me while asking if I was a lawyer or activist!

FACT: If your hands are clean and your heart is free from guilt, the Creator will never let evil people dominate you

The Creator has never let me down. And He never will. if you are true to Him, you’ll enjoy the same rewards.

Like I’ve said in a past article, you simply cannot claim to believe in an all powerful omnipresent creator and at the same time claim it’s impossible or risky to challenge/resist corrupt demands made of you.

if you are afraid to say NO, then where is your faith?

Those who TRULY know the Creator will have no problems doing what I advocate here.

It’s just a matter of walking your talk!

Final Words: It is “fear” that drives the fatalistic mental attitude of “powerlessness” many people out here tend to have.

This is why they remain unwilling to stand up and fight against societal ills like corruption, injustice etc visited on them or others around them.

I have spent my entire life living successfully and achieving my life goals without ever giving to any of that nonesense. It goes without saying, that the periods of prolonged pain, deprivation, suffering, and humiliation that most people told me I would pass through for being this way, have NOT killed me till now.

Since I have also repeatedly succeeded in intervening to stop others from having their rights trampled upon using the ideas I offer here, then you can understand why I can confidently assert that what I propose is doable!

I’ve done it for decades without ever having cause to regret doing so. If I can do it, without putting my faith in any man, then anyone can do it – IF s/he is willing to think/act with faith in the Creator!

PS(Full Disclosure):

Note that I do not do religion I.e I attend neither church or mosque or indeed any other.

What I’ve said here has to do with your spirituality and NOT your religious preference.

NEW FRAUD. PLS BEWARE!! [Phony Kidnappers Playing Mind Games Over The Phone to Get Money]

Last week I heard the audio of a truly audacious 419 fraudster trying to impersonate an online banking support officer over the phone (click link below to listen).

419 over the phone. What an embarrassment to Nigeria! – YouTube

Since then I’ve become convinced that anything is possible in today’s Nigeria.

That’s why I share this on my blog – better safe than sorry as they say.

NEW FRAUD. PLS BEWARE!!

Given below is what happened to someone & he has narrated this in his own words:

” I received a call from someone claiming that he was from my mobile Service provider and he asked me to shutdown my phone for 2 hours for 3G update to take place. As I was rushing for a meeting,I did not question, but just shut down my cell phone. After 45 minutes I felt very suspicious since the caller did not even introduce his name.

I quickly turned on my cell phone and saw several missed calls from my family members and the others were from the number that had called me earlier –I called my parents and I was shocked that they sounded very worried asking me whether I am safe.

My parents told me that they had received a call from someone claiming that they had me with them and asking for money to let me free. The call was so real and my parents even heard ‘my voice’ crying out loud asking for help.

My father was at the bank waiting for next call to proceed for money transfer. I told my parents that I am safe and asked them to lodge a police report .Right after that I received another call from the guy asking me to shutdown my cell phone for another 1 hour which I refused to do and hung up.

They kept calling my cell phone until the battery had run down. I myself lodged a police report and I was informed by the officer that there were many such scams reported. MOST of the cases reported that the victim had already transferred the money! And it is impossible to get back the money.

Be careful as this kind of scam might happen to any of us!!!Those guys are so professional and very convincing during calls. If you are asked to shut down your cell phone for updates by the service provider, ASK AROUND!

Your family or friends might receive the same call. “Be Safe and Stay Alert! Please pass around to your family and friends !!!v

[Preliminary Highlights!] Maiden Edition of Efe Ohwofasa’s Lifestyle Business Conference, held Saturday 25th June 2016 in Nigeria’s Sapele!

It was a most exciting day for attendees at the first ever edition of Efe’s Lifestyle Business Conference, held this past Saturday 25th June 2016, at Peemos Place, Sapele-Delta state, Nigeria!

To say they were WOWed would be an understatement, as Efe literally poured out his heart to the audience!

To add more emotion to the event, there were among them some who knew him from back when he actually hawked groceries on the streets in that same city years back, while they schooled together.

What a reunion that was!

You can imagine how inspiring it was for them to see him stand and speak to them on stage in his new status as an internationally recognised business coach. Little wonder that the testimonials came pouring!

PII 020: A BOPMS™ Will Enable You Run Your Farm Business Profitably Even When You’re Away!

There is a saying that if you cannot be away from your business for fear of things not going right, that’s not a business – it’s a job.

Now, it is my considered opinion that if there is any kind of business that the owner needs to be able to get time away from, without fear of things going seriously wrong, it’s the farm business.

Why?

Because starting and running a farm business is a very demanding process, that requires investment of money, time, effort and resources by the owners and members of his/her team.

Quite often many owners and their farm hands/managers have to work long hours, round the clock into weekends and on public holidays to keep things running smoothly.

In this part of the world, majority of them have to contend with additional problems amounting to extremes of the above – leaving them even lesser time to be away from their businesses.

For instance, in Nigeria, where public water supply and electricity which others take for granted, are often very limited in availability, the owners frequently have to go the extra mile to provide themselves an alternative source – and that has direct and indirect implications in financial and non-financial terms.

Apart from that, the need to establish and maintain reliable medium to long terms sales outlets for products turned out by the farm enterprise also tend to keep the owners perpetually busy.

Many start out depending on the mass of market women and other small buyers who come directly to the farm gates. However, over time, for those whose output plans outstrip the demand from such groups, they sometimes find themselves limited in production output capacity due to an inability to locate bulk buyers.

Lacking formal systems for attracting bulk buyers into formal contract relationships, they end up being at the mercy of the small buyers, to the extent that they are forced to sell close to cost price or even at a loss, to keep production going.

The picture I have painted above is representative of what many farm business owners find themselves faced with in many parts of Nigeria/Africa.

I have spoke to several farm CEO clients who complained to me about various aspects of the above problem, and how it has limited them.

However, every time I have tried to talk to them about setting up SYSTEMS in their businesses, to reduce the unpredictability and variability in their operations, many have simply found it hard to appreciate.

When I say SYSTEMS, I mean having a tried and tested set of procedures and processes identified to be critical to the uninterrupted functioning of your business operations.

This SYSTEM is what would ensure that your farm business is able to consistently turn out the expected products using the prescribed inputs of manpower and other resources, over time.

We see systems in place around us all the time, but many of us lack the training to identify them for what they are. I like to call them Best Practice Systems.

Examples include those which make it possible for EVERY BMW model that comes off the production line to deliver performance and “aesthetic appeal” similar to others.

To put it another way, every person who goes to buy a BMW does so often with the expectation that s/he will not get anything less than what s/he has seen others get in the past.

Same applies to you when you buy an I-Phone, or Blackberry Smartphone. The makers have put in place SYSTEMS that ensure buyers get what they promise. Exceptions will arise – but they will be few, and the companies will have SYSTEMS in place to address them as quickly as possible to the satisfaction of the buyers.

As a farm business owner, having a Best Practice System in place CAN dramatically boost your enterprise’s productivity and profitability.

The system would be one that ensures your farm runs right regardless of changes in personnel, or variations in operational parameters.

A SYSTEM that enables you achieve such predictable performance in your farm business is what I call a “Best Operating Process Management System” (BOPMS) for Profitable, and Stress-Free Farm Business Management.

And it is something I offer to help results focused Farm CEOs put in place on their farms.

But use of a BOPMS is NOT for all comers. You must be ready to take your farm business to the next level.

Or if you’re just starting, you must have a vision to operate at an optimal level of productivity from the very beginning.

It means you want to be able to cut down time lost to trial and error over the long term. Instead you will be keen to have your operations “benchmarked” to identify the best ways to run them, to maximise desired output.

Then you want ALL your team members to be trained to adhere to that proven “way” of running the business – whether they are new on the job or old hands.

It is only when that kind of system is in place that you can be sure the business will run right even when you choose to stay away.

The best part is that a BOPMS will equip you with remote monitoring “instruments” that you can use to accurately determine what has happened while you were away, to the extent that you will be able to deduce what was done or not done, and any likely consequences.

Not just that, a well developed and implemented BOPMS will include reliable systems for securing profitable sales outlets for farm produce on a medium to long term basis.

With such a system in place, it goes without saying that you, as the owner, will feel more comfortable staying away from the farm, if and when the need arises. You would worry less about coming back to discover things gone – or going – wrong, that would require killing of fires.

The above scenario tends to come across as being too good to be true for some Farm CEOs, and I understand why: They have not known any other way from the one they are used to.

Some have seen others doing it the same old fashioned way for decades – and they’ve not done badly.

I however argue that you can do more – or even better. Especially by “gifting” yourself the opportunity to work less, and having your business work more for you – even when you’re away.

This is why I offer interested Farm CEOs an opportunity to have me develop and implement a BOPMS for their farm businesses.

If the benefits described above appeal to you…if you would like to experience what it feels like to really own a business that does NOT feel like a job…that gives you peace of mind…click here to request details of how I can help you [I’ll send you the one page mind map showing key components of a BOPMS – with annotations and notes].

In addition to constantly challenging the status quo and influencing positive work changes, he built a reputation for using self-taught spreadsheet programming skills (starting with Lotus 1-2-3, and later moving to Excel Visual Basic) – in his spare time – to develop Automated Spreadsheet Applications to computerize manual report generation processes in the departments he worked. Over four(4) of his applications were adopted for brewery level reporting.

Tayo holds a B.Sc degree in Agricultural Extension Services from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, having graduated top of his class – with Second Class Upper Division honors – in 1992. He is an Associate Member of the UK Institute & Guild of Brewing, a 1997 National Finalist of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s(NIM) Young Managers’ competition, a Certified Psychometric Test Administrator for Psytech UK, innovator of Spontaneous Coaching for Self-Development™ (SCfS-D™), and Founder of the Self-Development Academy (SDAc).

[TRIBUTE] Muhammad Ali: Builder of People & Bridges Between People!

This article is based on excerpts from a message I recently sent to a friend, in which I shared my feelings about how Muhammad Ali influenced me. It’s a short piece – especially by my standards – but it’s just right for the personal tribute I’ve been meaning to publish on this blog in commemoration his recent passing :-)

Like many people around the world who’ve watched the video of the popular “15 Rounds” tribute done by Billy Crystal 36 years ago to Muhammad Ali, I also found it very moving and inspirational.

Click here to read one of several articles featuring the video version of that tribute.

Like many have noted since his burial, that tribute (which Billy Crystal released on social media after Ali’s death was announced) reflected, among other things, the fact that Ali brought out the best in everbody – regardless of their differences.

He was a builder of people and bridges between people.

Ali didn’t stop at just being good at what he did. Instead he went further to act as a Social Change Agent against problems he identified in his society.

Politics did not interest him. So being politically correct was never something he tried to be

Instead he said whatever he felt needed to be said, no matter whose Ox was gored. And he neither played favourites, nor allowed narrow or irrational sentiments to influence his expressed views.

Quite often Ali was practical and realistic in making his points on issues.

Racial discrimination was one subject he really spoke passionately about. His personal experience of getting thrown out of a white owned restaurant (where they told him “we don’t serve blacks here”) in his home town of Louisville just after he returned from winning the gold medal in boxing at the 1960 Rome Olympics, fueled his drive and passion to influence a change in society!

There is no doubt that because of the way he used his fame to speak against racial discrimination in the USA for instance, changes in segregation practices happened faster in that society than they would have, if he’d chosen to keep quiet and focus on the profession at which he was exceptionally gifted and successful.

I’ve long followed Ali as he spoke against racism etc despite the risks/pains it cost him.

His life story is a testimony to the power of faith and self-belief. Despite being just one man, he succeeded in unifying people across racial, religious, language and other socio-cultural barriers.

The Muhammad Ali Centre he founded has helped many thousands of disadvantaged people while he lived, and continues to do so.

Incidentally that centre was setup to fulfil the dream he described when he answered a little boy’s question: “What will you do when you retire from boxing?”

See the video in which he gives his answer to that question – click here.

That video and the one for the earlier mentioned tribute, as well as those in which he spoke in interviews against racism and his views of how society should be run without discrimination, are why I made him one of my role models in life.

Muhammad Ali set a great example for how to excel professionally/personally and then use one’s success to make a useful impact socially in people’s lives.

Our respective societies will be much better off if we can EACH emulate this man’s wonderful qualities in the way we live our lives and relate with one another.

PII 019: Success is NOT Hereditary – and There is NO Gene Associated With Poverty [Hint: That’s Why This Former Street Hawker Turned International Business Coach Is Launching an Academy to Help Others Succeed!]

“Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.” – Norman Vincent Peale (NVP)

Life is not a bed of roses. Good fortune does not just fall into people’s laps.

As many who have succeeded authentically in this world will tell you, it takes work, often a lot of hard work, to make it in life.

It does not matter how talented, gifted, intelligent or connected you are. If you’re going to make a memorable impact in any area of endeavour you venture in life, you WILL have to push yourself to do more than the average person does or will do. That is what it takes to stand out and excel.

The above is why the kids of many rich and wealthy people do not always go on to be successful in their own right. Many end up squandering the wealth and resources, even the goodwill built by their parents over the years, once the latter pass on. I’m sure you can point to one or two examples you know in your society – or indeed your neighbourhood.

So, success is not hereditary. We cannot pass it from parent to offspring. In the same way, there is no scientific evidence to indicate that there is a gene associated with poverty.

This explains why some people become stupendously rich in their adult lives, despite having been raised in conditions of near crippling poverty.

In essence therefore, what I am saying is that success is not something that can be predetermined or prevented for any person. The individual determines whether or not s/he will succeed. To paraphrase the famous saying: S/he is the master of her fate – the captain of her soul.

Whatever you become in life will be the result of the efforts you were willing to make to achieve your God-given potential. Nothing outside of you can stop you from manifesting your fullest potential and accomplishing any goals you set for yourself.

The key to leveraging the foregoing truths is however your ability to THINK the right way to attract the success you seek, and to BELIEVE that you can bring your thoughts to manifest the reality you desire.

That was what NVP meant in his quote that I began this piece with.

So, if you want to succeed in spite of any obstacles you may ever encounter in life, there are 2 main things you must do at all time:

 • Don’t Have/Keep an Empty Head

This means you need to be a thinker. The book “Think and Grow Rich” has been read by many millions and counting. It has made most who applied what they read in it, to achieve success beyond their wildest dreams. The testimonials cut across societies, cultures, and races.

You need to know how to take control of your thoughts and channel them in a way that attracts what you want to you, while repelling what you do not want from you.

Get that book and read it. I read it over 20 times from cover to cover, until I internalised most parts of it to the point that I could recall them as needed for inspiration. The result was that I developed the ability to progress no matter what. Read that book. You will thank me later!

 • Don’t Have an Empty Heart

Having an empty heart means lacking passion. When you do not do what you love, you will not be able to put what we call your “heart and soul” into it. When you cannot do that, it will often be difficult to continue doing that activity that you are engaged in.

This is the nature of the human being. We need passion to be able to persevere in doing something – especially during the inevitable difficult times!

So, if you want success, you must invest quality thinking time to identify what your heart tells you is your PASSION. That will be something that you enjoy and WILL enjoy doing, no matter how bad things may ever get for you. No matter what you lack, or what you lose, you will REMAIN ever so passionate about doing it.

Only this way will you be sure of keeping yourself HUNGRY to succeed in any area of endeavour you choose to venture.

No matter how badly life treats you, doing the 2 things mentioned above CAN – and WILL – help you turn your fortunes around for the better, IF you do them right.

There are so many successful people who have told their life stories that confirm the accuracy of the above statement.

You can come up with a few names yourself I’m sure. Both in your country and out of it. It goes without saying that I know a good number myself, and have studied many of them to build my own success despite the severe visitations of prolonged adversity I encountered, especially over the past 14 years in self-employment.

However, every now and then I come across a true story of someone who applied the above steps to succeed, and the details of the experience he had really impress me.

One such person is UK based Business Coach, Professional Speaker and Marketing Consultant – Efe Ohwofasa.

Efe is a client whose work I’m promoting, because I believe in his brand.

We’ve never met in the flesh since he reached out to me in 2013. I’ve now worked remotely with him now for about 8 months on 2 projects.

His amazing rag to riches success story has really touched me, and when he told me about his project to give back in Africa, I decided to go the extra mile to do my bit to help out.

Below is a message I’ve been sending out.

If you can spare the time from your busy schedule – help spread the word if you know any persons or groups/associations/organisations in the Benin – Delta area that may be interested.

There are plans to roll out in Lagos, Abuja and other cities. So we’ve been trying to connect with partners.
