[Tagline: If it can help your farm business, you’ll find it in THE FARM CEO™ Newspaper ]

In continuation of my year end efforts to focus more on areas often neglected by CEOs for achieving profit-making success in business, be it farming or any other. I feature articles on smart marketing.

PREVIEW

Just like I’ve said in recent articles, the loss of my 9 year old spontaneousdevelopment.com on 4th May 2014, has not limited my online sales lead generation via my tayosolagbade.com, which replaced it. The number of enquiries has risen to the extent that my Website Conversion Ratio has actually INCREASED.

This means that I’m actually getting MORE people contacting me about what I offer per traffic volume, than I used to.

NB: If you don’t know what a Website Conversion Ratio(WCR), or how to calculate it, I link below to an article I wrote in 2005, that explains (Note that my byline at the bottom of the article is yet to be updated to tayosolagbade.com. So you’ll find it still links to spontaneousdevlopment.com – which got taken over by Aplus.net in May 2014).

But how come I’m getting a higher rate of Website Conversion after losing my domain?

Here’s my experience based understanding. And I’ve taken time to study this via trends, to be sure.

Think Your Problem Is Worse Than Other People’s? Cheer Up & Use It As A Stepping Stone To Success!

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” –Arnold Schwarzenegger

Think your problem is worse than other people’s? If YES, then let me start by warning you that thinking that way is VERY likely to be a mistake. And if you go on thinking that way, you will end up believing that no one can help you. Funny thing about our thoughts, when repeated long enough, is that they tend to manifest in the physical just as we imagined them.

In otherwords, by thinking(to yourself) that there is NO solution to the problem(s) you have for instance, you could actually end up not finding any solution to it – no matter how much help you get!

In my language (Yoruba), we have a VERY wise saying that goes thus: “He that has a head has no cap, and he that has a cap has no head”.

The morale of that saying is that for each of us there will be different strokes or experiences. Life will dish out challenges to us according to our abilities.

We must therefore learn to avoid complaining and instead face whatever challenges we encounter head on. That way, we will not be overwhelmed by them. And if we hang in there long enough, we will breakthrough.

Jim Rohn wrote that even though life’s challenges will always give us reason to want to give up and/or complain, we must avoid doing either. And as he so rightly observes, complaining about our problems only “adds to the downward pull of life”. I think the irony of it all, is that just as you feel the struggles you are going through are the worst possible, there is quite often(if you look carefully and honestly enough) someone else who will tell you his/her own story and make yours look like a “fairy tale”!

A True Story

Let me briefly share with you the story of a fellow entrepreneur, who I will call Taiye, who during one particularly tough year(as he narrated it to me) had a barrage of bad luck thrown at him from every conceivable direction.

First, he – and his family – were thrown out by their landlady for not being able to pay rent. To earn income to supplement the little he brought in, his pregnant wife had to mount a stand along the roadside selling vegetables which he grew on a piece of land someone let him use.

Then one day she took ill(while still carrying the pregnancy), was admitted to the hospital, and for months barely hung on to life as he struggled to pay her mounting medical bills.

Despite all these he remained focussed, borrowed money when he could, did odd jobs and eventually his wife recovered, the baby was born safely etc. Looking back, he told me he never thought he would arrive where he is today. All those setbacks occurred at a time when business was really bad for him, making it all the more difficult and painful to go on.

It was – according to him – like a cruel conspiracy of fateful events had been visited upon him. Yet, he hung in there.

He also pointed out that his “hanging in there” successfully was made “easier” NOT because he never considered giving up, but because he had eliminated all possible sources of retreat (sound familiar?).

Use Bad Experiences As Stepping Stones To Succeed!(Another True Story)

I have had some nasty experiences driving along the Benin-Ore road(with my family in the car) on three unforgettable occasions. One time, my car stopped because of failed engine valves, a bad alternator and a resultant run down battery.

From 1.00pm in the evening till 10.00pm at night we were at Ore, where a team of “crack” roadside mechanics took my engine apart and put it back together – with me watching closely and asking questions(What I learnt that day about car engines, serves me well today!). After it all, we declined the offer to take up accommodation at a rundown motel there, and resumed our journey at 10.30 pm to get to Benin. I drove at over 150km/hr in the hope that armed robbers(if any) on the way would be too scared to stop us.

Apart from terrible potholes we ran into because of this, I also ended up losing a wheel cover. While sharing this experience with a colleague later on, I vividly recall him saying “I’ve never lost a single wheel cover since I started driving along that road.”

Although I did not take him up on it, that statement immediately struck me as rather naive. If a person measures his progress by the fact that s/he’s never had anything go wrong with his/her plans, then s/he is in big trouble. The only way nothing will ever go wrong with anything you do(or plan to do) is if you never do(or plan to do) something you have never done before! In other words you would be risk-averse. If you are, then you will also be success-repellent!!

My personal experiences as a person who has ALWAYS thrived(and often emerged better off) in the midst of problems and challenging experiences tells me you learn most, and mature faster, when you embark on intelligent risk-taking and mistake making.

So what if you never have a setback or nothing bad or embarrassing ever happens to you? That says nothing to anyone really.

If anything, it confirms that you will not be remembered for anything exceptional or outstanding either. Why? Because you would not have ventured beyond what you believe you can pull off. That would mean you will only be found doing those things you already know how to do – and most people are very good at that, so it wouldn’t be a great achievement by any means.

Summary

Athletes run up hills to build leg muscles and stamina. Running on level ground would have been “easier”, but would not push them to break new thresholds of performance. Those who work out – to build muscles – subscribe to the axiom “No pain. No gain” because they know if they do not continue to INCREASE the weight of dumb-bells they lift, their biceps/other muscles would NOT continue to grow in size!

The same rule applies in the intellectual realm:

“The brain that is not used suffers atrophy” – Thomas Edison

“The mind must be exercised if it is to grow and strengthen. The more you use your mind, the more it will improve your ability to think” – Jay Anderson

James Cook, author of the best selling book “The Startup Entrepreneur” called those bad experiences “Shrewd Instructors”. They teach hard lessons, which inevitably equip anyone who undergoes them, to succeed. A person who makes a habit of taking the short term comfort route by avoiding difficulty, adversity, hardship etc is likely to end up also “avoiding” long-term success, and may end up missing a chance(s) to achieve a worthwhile existence.

The following quotes sum it up quite well. :-)

“If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing.” – Benjamin Franklin

“A knowledge of the path cannot be substituted for putting one foot in front of the other.” – M. C. Richards

So, now that you know(or have been REMINDED of) the above BENEFITS, are you done yet with mulling over your misfortune? You should be. It’s time you went back out there to make things happen the way you want them to!

Become A Habitual Peak Performer – Learn How To Get Into Flow Or – The Zone More Frequently

[This article was first published online on March 08, 2007 – on spontaneousdevelopment.com (now defunct) and Ezinearticles.com]

This Is NOT An Expert Paper On Getting Into “Flow”.

It is not a technical article on the psychology of sports and how the brain functions when a person is engaged in competition. I am not a zone coach or psychologist, neither do I pretend to have conducted any experiments or studies on people who have exhibited the traits of persons who could be said to have been in “flow” at any point in time.

What I aim to do in this article is to share my considerable experience in delivering exceptional performances in virtually every area of endeavour I have chosen to apply diligent and committed effort. Most of my achievements have been made possible by my self-taught ability to almost willfully get myself into “Flow”(an unconscious state of mind that facilitates seemingly effortless achievement of optimal learning and/or performance) whenever I felt the need to do so, in order to achieve a set goal(s).

Because I have experienced what it feels like to get into “Flow” or “The Zone” on many occasions(and I provide graphic details of some of those instances in this article), I am able to share THAT experience with the reader, and explain how s/he can achieve the same result, frequently and repeatedly, if s/he so desires.

As I have stated earlier, I make no claims to being an authority on getting into “Flow” or “The Zone”. However going by my personal experiences(which I need NO PhD degree qualifications to write or speak about), I strongly believe different individuals will find need to develop different levels of proficiency in their ability to get into AND STAY – for as long as may be necessary/desired – in “The Zone”. Improvement in mastery of this skill will depend on how well each person applies him/herself.

The challenge is therefore for you to use the ideas offered in this write up to build up YOUR OWN ability to get into – and stay in – “The Zone” in a way that enables you meet YOUR needs to achieve.

What Exactly Does It Mean To Get Into “Flow” Or “The Zone”?(My Handball Semi-Final Match Case Study)

Before I make references to what others have said, I will describe this experience in my own words by narrating what happened to me during the 1992 finals of the University Of Ibadan’s Inter-Halls Handball Competition. That year, I was captain of both the university team and the Independence Hall team. The latter had qualified – for the first time in their history – for the semi-finals of the inter-halls competition, and we were up against Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, our arch rivals.

The match commenced around 1.00pm when the sun was overhead and the heat was scorching. It was a very intense and closely fought battle. As one side scored a goal the other side replied almost immediately on the next attack. At half time my team led, by a single point. Although I had scored a number of goals en route to the finals, that first half had not witnessed a single goal by me.

However, because we had anticipated that some of our key players would be marked out by the opposition, our team had worked out an alternative plan that made it possible to create scoring chances for other players. This worked well, and we stayed ahead – but only just!

At a point, all I could think of was the single point lead on the score board and the voice in my head screaming that we needed to score another goal to avoid a tie. Each time I turned to receive or make a pass, I found I did not really see faces clearly. I saw the jersey colors and numbers, but the detailed features of each person seemed to be something of a blur…faded. Yet I could still tell my team mates from the opposition at any point in time.

Suddenly, for no obvious reason, the guy marking me out let me get COMPLETELY past him(for the first time since the match began) as a pass came to me from the left. In that split second, as I caught the ball, I saw a little space between the left foot of the goal keeper and the bottom left of the goal post. On reflex, I threw a hip shot with my right hand, and watched almost as if on TV, the ball fly into into the keeper’s far left corner of the goal post. All this while I had stopped hearing most of the noise from the spectators who had completely surrounded the handball court and were cheering wildly.

Then I felt someone grab me, screaming delightedly, while another team mate patted me on the back. I looked to the sidelines and saw the University team coach – Mr. Nwosu – raise his hands in the air shouting ‘Iyo”(a slang in my language Yoruba, meaning “Super!” even though – ironically – he was Ibo). That was when it clicked – at least enough for me to manage to raise my right hand in the air and jog back to the nine metre line of my team’s half. I realised I had scored a good goal, but I could not explain how – it had been done on instinct, and I could not even recall “thinking about doing” or “planning” it.

Not long after, the referee blew the final whistle, and we won. That year, someone using the pen name “Dancing Pen” wrote an article on me (which I still have a copy of in my files) which was pasted on the notice board in the hall titled “Tayo Solagbade – Steroid Man”*, in which the writer described the goal I scored as (to use his exact words): “the Fastest, Most Spectacular and Shocking Goal”. He also quoted the University coach as having said “Indy (i.e. Independence Hall), played the match of their lives, and Tayo was at his best”.

*(“Steroid Man” was a nickname given to me by colleagues in the University team, because I never seemed to get tired in a match, even when we were losing badly).

How Does This Relate To Getting Into Flow/The Zone?

Well the truth is every time I got on to the handball court, I made a point of forgetting EVERYTHING else. For those who took note, minutes to the start of the match, I would become a bit pensive, and withdrawn. During this period, I tended to re-run in my mind specific moves I had practiced during the training sessions leading up to the match, which I hoped to use. Even as I exchanged greetings with other players, I would keep my mind firmly fixed on this mental pre-match “ritual”.

Evidence that my achievements were recognised would come at the end of my final year in the University when I received merit awards from the university Sports Council and the Independence hall – in addition to graduating top of my class in my department. Not many active sports persons in the institution got to have the best of both worlds the way I did – and THAT was what caught the attention of the institution’s sports administrators. Looking back I realise that my “intense focus” enabled me get into “flow”(though I did not know the word/concept then) quite frequently while pursuing both my academic and sporting interests on campus, so that I achieve the “balanced” success I eventually recorded.

Peak Performing As An Entrepreneur

Today, I build spreadsheet software and websites(among others) for a living – activities which require PC/Internet access AND electricity. Unfortunately, in order to make tangible profits, I have to DAILY explore ways to COST-EFFECTIVELY progress paying clients’ projects IN SPITE OF extremely erratic power supply from my country’s power generation company. Sometimes I do not have light for more than four(4) hours in a day – and even that iS often a case of ON…then OFF…then ON again, and not a continuous stretch.(FACT)

Despite these challenges, my client profiles have risen, and my fees quadrupled since the start of the new year! This has happened because I successfully transferred my ability to “peak-perform” by getting into flow, from my past life in school, sports, and paid employment into my present life as an entrepreneur. It did not happen overnight(took quite some practice/persistence because I had to LEARN all over again till I began to master my NEW vocation), but then nothing that has sustainable value ever does.

Getting Into “Flow/The Zone” Is NOT About Being(Or Becoming) Absent Minded!

In the process of pushing myself to achieve peak performance, I sometimes found myself being accused – especially by those I lived with(my wife being number one) of being absent minded – or even uncaring. Over time they however came to discover that it was not deliberate.

Being in “flow” is about getting into a state of mind that enhances your ability to perform at your best…your peak. Not everyone knows – or cares to call it – “flow” or “The Zone”. But many who have seen someone under its influence (or experienced it) often mention the same “signs” when describing it. I once read that William H. Carrier(inventor of the Air Conditioner) was said to have been “absent minded” to the point that he once boarded a train and completely forgot his destination, while thinking about a solution to a problem! THAT is the “intensity” of focus or concentration on a SPECIFIC activity that can get ANYONE into “flow”. No wonder James Cook referred to Carrier as belonging to the elite group of “Super Entrepreneurs”.

Thomas Edison was also reputed to have been rather “forgetful”. What I think many “critics” of these people failed to note however is the fact that these men – and others like them – were seldom, if at all EVER forgetful about their favoured vocations or interests! I am not aware for instance that Edison at any point in his life was unable to answer questions posed to him regarding his work because he “forgot”. Instead it was the daily routine stuff that had little to do with the work he had a passion for, that he “chose to forget”.

Many achievement-oriented people who feel the need to be at their productive best even do something that I like to call “Deliberate Forgetting“. In fact I recall reading about a teenage girl who became an excellent violinist saying that she achieved her proficiency through what she called ‘Planned Neglect”. She explained this term by saying that each day she would put off cleaning her room (or other chores) UNTIL she had put in what she considered ENOUGH practice into playing the violin.

Before adopting this approach she had been unable to find enough time/energy to practice, and as a result was not making the progress she wanted. This happened because she often started each day doing her various chores, using up a lot of energy/time. By the time she eventually began practice there would not be much time left – and she would tire easily from all the previous exertion. So she decided some things had to enjoy less of her attention in order for her to FOCUS on those things or THAT ONE thing she most desired to do – and do WELL.

Getting Into “Flow” During Intellectual Activity Results In “Mental Ecstasy”

When you get into flow while doing something intellectual(e.g. writing), from my experience what you feel is what I believe can be called “Mental Ecstasy”. You would feel “great pleasure” every time you are able to achieve that state of mind – even though the activity you are engaged in might require great effort or skill that would task other persons to the limits of their abilities! And that’s why it can get a bit addictive, leading to a person acting seemingly “uncaring” or “distant”.

To a considerable extent, getting into and STAYING in “Flow” requires that your mental attitude be almost the exact opposite of that required to be a caring, thoughtful and responsive partner to a mate or parent to a child etc. In my opinion however if a person can take the pains to learn how to control the process of deliberately going in and out of flow, s/he would live a more successful life.

You need to be able to strike a balance – delicate it might be, between being in flow and being human. Else what could happen is you end your sojourn on earth as having been one of the most exceptional performers in your chosen vocation in the history of mankind, but with the reputation of having been incapable of keeping a relationship or family together.

Daniel Goleman in his book on “Emotional Intelligence” explained that improving your ability to enter into flow is to become more emotionally intelligent. According to him getting into flow is the ultimate means of making use of one’s emotions in the pursuit of performance and learning. To put it simply, a person who KNOWS how to get him or herself into “Flow” or “The Zone” deliberately and repeatedly as the need arises demonstrates a high level of Emotional Intelligence. This is because being able to do so requires a level of self-mastery that is seldom achievable without the ability to harness one’s emotions effectively.

As is common knowledge today, your Emotional Intelligence and NOT your academic intelligence is MORE likely to determine your success in school and especially your adult life. Therefore to increase your chances of succeeding in life, you will want to learn how to get into “flow” more frequently, so as to boost your Emotional Intelligence.

Steps You Can Follow To Get Yourself Into Flow/The Zone Deliberately & More Frequently

1. Carefully think about and set SPECIFIC goals you want to achieve(in SPECIFIC areas of your vocation or interest) by getting into “Flow”.

2. Identify the TASKS you will need to execute or implement in order to achieve those goals.

3. Develop your proficiency in the task(s) you wish to achieve peak performance in to the point that you can do it(or them) with practiced ease. Some people would say “with your eyes closed”. I have watched labelling machine operators on a manned 45,000 bottles per hour bottling line feed labels into it almost without error continuously for over six(6) consecutive hours on a night shift. It takes plenty of PRACTICE to get to that level of competence.

And it is only after you have attained such a level of proficiency that you can reasonably expect to be able to deliberately/competently get in and out of “Flow”, while engaged in your preferred activity.

4. Actively work to find and/or create the kind of environment(physical and psychological) that you KNOW will enhance your ability to get into and STAY in The Zone. For instance, you will need to master the art of focussing intensely or concentrating HARD on your subject of interest such that you “force” yourself into “The Zone”. I often use this approach (especially) when I need to give a speech.

5*. Avoid the things/habits that keep you from getting into The Zone(e.g. undisciplined expenditure of sexual energy; worrying etc) and do more of those which boost your ability to “Zone Out”(e.g. staying fit through regular physical exercise, meditation etc).*

6. Engage as much as possible ONLY in tasks or vocations that you naturally ENJOY doing – else getting into flow and/or staying there will be VERY difficult. Your performance as a result will be erratic.

Knowing How To Get Into The Zone Will Help You Deliver Desired Results Under Pressure

As you may be aware, some people thrive under, and respond positively TO pressure – often delivering their BEST performances when exposed to it. I happen to be one of such people. It is my considered opinion, based on my personal experiences and successes in school, sports, paid and now self-employment, that if you truly want to be a peak performer, you MUST master how to deliver optimal performances in your preferred vocation or activity EVEN when(especially when!) you are under pressure.

Fail to do this and your transformation will be INCOMPLETE. You would be like a potential Michael Jordan who fails to achieve his/her full potential on the court during game time. What’s that you ask? I mean everyone loved Jordan because he was a player who delivered when it mattered most(a “big match” player) – in the important games and at the MOST important time…scoring a match winning basket just a few seconds before the buzzer sounded. It takes an ability to DEAL with psychological pressure to do that. You CAN develop the ability to do it. If you learn how to get into “flow”, as suggested here, you WILL end up with the ability to do it unconsciously – AGAIN and AGAIN!(The key word there being “UNCONSCIOUSLY“)

Final Words: A Person In Flow/The Zone Will Make Doing What S/he Does Look Easier Than It Really Is

And THAT is something YOU can use as a measure of how well you have learnt to get into and STAY in the zone while doing what you do i.e when people start expressing surprise or even amazement about how well you do what you do, with some asking you “what is your secret?”.

Another way to measure your progress, will be unsolicited testimonials people will give about your abilities. Below, I offer two examples of unsolicited written testimonials about me from former colleagues:

Tayo, I honestly believe you are one of those who will succeed at anything he does… I don’t need to wish you good luck. You have the ability to make your own luck..“.

Read my article titled “Should You Quit Your Job Or Start Your Business Part-Time?” to read the full text of that handwritten message to me in December 2001 by the overall head(Operations Manager) of the brewery I worked in.

I once helped out a Utilities Manager colleague by automating his Engineering Services usage monitoring charts preparation using my skills in spreadsheet programming. This was done in respone to his request, after he saw what I had done in my spare time for my department. Well, here’s what he wrote (in part) to me via email from the new company – a multinational Oil Service company – he had resumed working for, some months after my departure:

————————

To:olufelatks@xxxxxx.com

Subject:WANT US TO MEET

Date:Wed, 26 Jun 2002 09:59:16 +0100

Hi Tayo,…my main reasons for my search for you are… to involve you in my new task of computerizing my departmental reports….I believe you have the competence to transform our reports having seen your Midas touches in Guinness. The report will be in Excel spreadsheet, segmented into sheets but to be viewed and accessed by macro buttons. The report should be able to auto print and shows graphs. Presently, we have two mains Computerized Maintenance Systems from which some data need to be downloaded. The report must be able to give quick predetermined checks for immediate management decisions. In pursuit of this goal, I want us to discuss and agree on the execution modalities and other things. I am proposing to be in Lagos this weekend and wish to see you…Shola”

————————-

What made him so sure that I could help him? The answer is obvious: I had shown that I could deliver the kind of results he wanted in the past and he had witnessed it.

Learn how to deliver peak performances routinely and repeatedly by getting into flow often, and you WILL earn similar testimonials from others around you.

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – To Write Productively, Develop the Ability to Do Your Best Writing At Will

If you struggle to do as much writing as you want (or need) to, the ideas I share in this article can help you banish that problem for EVER.

I’ll start by debunking a myth:

“The idea of finding the right time (and even place) to write is over-rated.” – Tayo K. Solagbade

I’m living proof of it, as demonstrated by my ability to produce quality writing content for clients. and myself ANYTIME I identify a need to do so.

The hard truth is that finding the right time/place for getting into the “mood” is a luxury a writer cannot afford, if s/he is to be productive – or better still, excel!

I say this as one working in a socioeconomic environment, where a myriad of annoyances routinely connive to scuttle a writer (or creative person)’s efforts to secure a conducive psychological atmosphere.

In other words, noise (in various forms) is a constant reality from which little chance of escape exists out here. Yet, some of us still produce results matching those of our contemporaries in less hostile climes.

We are able to do this, by drawing on the passion we have for what we do.

For most of us, it’s a passion so compelling, that we do NOT mind exerting huge amounts of EXTRA effort to nurture.

Some of our contemporaries in developed societies are not unaware of the harsh conditions under which we have to turn out the desired work quality and volume.

Especially those who have had the opportunity to visit us, and/or who were also born and raised here. Most of the latter relocated abroad to earn a living in more conductive socioeconomic environments (e.g. Europe, America, Asia etc)

Knowing what it’s like here, some openly express amazement at our ability to not just cope, but actually thrive, in the midst of such extreme negatives!

One Example: A few weeks ago, I had a international phone conversation with an African born expert-who-speaks, who lives and works outside Africa

At a point he asked me how – in spite of the constant loud chatter of generator noise – I was able to churn out the relentless stream of creative new content in form of write-ups, audios and videos for clients (like him) – and for my website.

He noted that years of being based abroad had made him quite needful of a controlled environment i.e. one devoid of noise and other extraneous influences that could disturb his concentration.

My response was that I had TRAINED myself to deliver needed results, in spite of the environment, knowing that I had NO viable alternative to being here.

I further added that if he had been in this part of the world, his passion would have PUSHED him to also ADAPT to the environment, and learn to turn out his best work in spite of any distractions around him.

And that’s the truth: Human beings can be extremely adaptable when driven by desire and passion!

When the human being is convinced that a course of action is necessary, s/he has the innate capability to creatively adapt his/her talents to carry it out, no matter the obstacles s/he may face.

This is why we were able to find ways to travel into space, where existing conditions did not permit our survival normally.

It is for this reason that I say the idea of finding the right time (and even place) to write is a luxury few writers can afford, if they really want to excel.

Forgive me for saying this, if you’re based outside Africa – especially for those of you living and working in places like Europe, America, UAE and Asia.

But the truth is that in most cases, your socioeconomic environments are often like HEAVEN compared to what obtains in my part of the world.

I won’t bother giving many examples.

You watch enough TV to be aware of a few.

For instance, the lack of access to regular power supply plaguing Nigeria, makes perpetual use of noisy generators inevitable. Experts engaged in creative thinking tasks like writing and software development tend to feel the pains the most.

To make matters worse, there is little or no regulation of noise pollution in this part of the world,

That makes it easy for just about anyone to mount massive loud speakers right on your street, in front of his/her shop blaring loud music, in what is a crude yet popular strategy for attracting the attention of potential buyers.

In developed societies, few people would dare do that, because they have been trained to realize they cannot impose on others in that manner.

What’s more, the law enforcement agents would take swift action to correct such a person.

Out here, your protests are unlikely to go anywhere. If anything the culprit would accuse you of being jealous.

In other words, creatives out here are often people who have trained themselves to do what they love without letting their unfavorable environment negatively affect their output.

Most of us out here think nothing of it, but being able to block out “noise” to get our work done, is a powerful ability that ensures we can achieve desired outcomes under literally any conditions.

Imagine therefore, what would happen if we suddenly gained access to developed societies devoid of most such limitations we contend with? Our productivity would simply go through the roof!

Bamidele Onibalusi, now 21 years old (having launched a successful professional freelance writing career as a teenager, from Nigeria’s ancient city of Ibadan) is one of such creative persons, who gets work done for international clients, in spite of Nigeria’s harsh conditions.

My ability to do what I do – as a multidisciplinary solutions provider to international clients – at this level, is also proof that it is possible.

Having said that, even out here, we STILL differ in terms of the DEGREE to which we can thrive under hardship…

Some of us have to face more difficult challenges than others, in the course of doing our writing.

For instance, a number of us – like me – have to deal with an additional layer of “distractions” in form of kids we have to parent.

A writer who has no child and/or is unmarried will have LESS potential distractions to deal with, apart from the noise from his/her generators.

But not so for the writer who is a parent to kids yet to leave home.

From settling perpetual quarrels between teenage siblings, to giving a toddler the attention s/he needs (and other parenting tasks in between), the life of a writer with family responsibilities can be so much MORE difficult!

I say this as one who has had to live this VERY complicated life, for YEARS, to the extent that I have to get my writing done under crazy – and I do mean CRAZY – conditions.

I once had work on a client’s due blog article in a General Hospital in Lagos, while waiting for blood test results for my son who had suddenly taken ill.

You should have seen odd looks I got from other parents sitting seated near me. I had to “relocate” myself into the car, to finish it off and send to the client.

It goes without saying that I could have called the client to say my kid took ill. However, my assessment of the situation convinced me I could still get it done – especially since we were only waiting for the results.

Having agreed that the final article would be sent to the client for review that Friday, towards the Monday launch, I wanted to do what I could to avoid derailing the set plans.

Luckily, my efforts paid off. My son got the right diagnosis and treatment, and the site launch took off as planned on Monday. I never told the client the circumstances under which I sent him that piece. What mattered was that things went according to plan.

On another occasion, I had to write a blog post due for publishing on my blog, while inside the chauffeur driven jeep of a Cotonou based Nigerian diplomat client, at 11.30p.m. We were stuck in a traffic jam on the way back to Seme border, after a visit to his farm in South West Nigeria.

In each instance, described above, the prevailing conditions mattered little to me. All I just needed was enough space to open the laptop and begin to do my writing.

Once the article was completed, I copied it to my smart phone and used the latter’s browser to upload it to this blog.

Interestingly, that same night, while still in the car, I was forced to prepare a PDF invoice I’d promised to send another client, and email it as an attachment using my Blackberry, just to avoid failing to get it to him before the next day, as I’d promised.

As you can imagine most of the clients never knew (and possibly would have cared less), how I got what they wanted done for them.

Clients will expect you to do what it takes – no matter what challenges you may come up against.

No excuses. No complaints. Just get it done.

That’s the attitude that wins the respect (and admiration), as well as the CONFIDENCE of clients.

That attitude convinces them that hiring you was not (and will not) be a mistake, because they know you will go the extra mile as often as necessary to deliver what you promise.

And once clients are convinced, you can be sure they’ll reward you with repeat business, and or testimonials/referrals.

The above implies that to deliver desired results consistently, you must become able to do your BEST writing, at will.

The question then is HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

My answer is simple:

By learning how to get yourself into flow or the zone.

First of all you need to come to the firm understanding that, if you let it, your mind can – and WILL – play tricks on you, about your ability or readiness to write.

Most times when we feel we’re not in the “mood” to write, it’s our mind that’s telling us we’re not.

In reality, all it takes to get started with writing at WILL, is to do just that: GET STARTED!

You CAN put yourself in the perfect mood to write, simply by STARTING and sticking with it.

By the time you’ve been at it a while, you’ll suddenly discover you’re getting along with much less effort than when you began.

Most productive writers anywhere in the world will confirm this: Stephen King, renowned for his prolific writing, says its true!

At the point when you find yourself achieving this kind of breakthrough, it would often mean you are in flow, or the zone.

Take it from me. I’ve done this for over a decade, and I can tell you that’s what happens.

NB: Only a person who lacks relevant knowledge, and.or experience of the subject, from which to do the writing effectively, will be unable to do this.

It so happens that I have a widely syndicated article that explains how to do just that (i.e. get into flow).

It has even been referenced in research papers.

The article is titled “Become A Habitual Peak Performer – Learn How To Get Into Flow Or – The Zone More Frequently

In it I describe what I do to produce the writing results that continually impress my clients.

To record similar – or better – writing success, I recommend you diligently apply what you learn from reading that article.

A more recent article I wrote on the same theme is titled “To Effortlessly Do More, Get Into Flow (Or The Zone)!

Yet another resource that can help you is my FREE PDF report titled “Proven Techniques/Strategies You Can Use to Start & Finish Writing ANYTHING“.

Question: But who is Burt Dubin, and why do I (Tayo K. Solagbade) think you should you learn from

him?

Answer: Burt is a 3 decade veteran in the professional speaking business. After achieving top level cross continental success as an

expert-speaker, he has established a reputation for mentoring some of the highest paid speakers in the world. He owns SpeakingBizSuccess.com, SpeakingSuccess.com and BurtDubin.com.

Burt helps those he mentors (experts-who-speak) to Position, Package, Promote, and Present* themselves successfully to clients (*He calls

them the 4Ps). That’s why it’s no surprise that on Burt’s website, considerable space capital is devoted to useful business marketing articles as well as products.

It might also interest you to know that MANY years back, Burt established himself as one of the best marketing minds in the world. To really put this FACT in

proper perspective, I’ll provide more specific details in form of an example.

A few years ago, Burt contributed an article to a powerful publication titled “The Most Effective Articles Ever – By The World’s Top Marketers“. That 574 page ebook features timeless marketing advice from 71 of the world’s top marketers – including Jack

Trout, Joe Vitale, Yanik Silver…and Burt Dubin.

That’s ample proof that (in addition to Public Speaking), Burt would be a great resource to learn business marketing from!

Full Disclosure: I represent Burt as Sole Agent for his products/services, which means if YOU buy from him, I get paid.

But that’s NOT the main reason I represent and recommend him. I have benefited in many ways by learning from Burt. Through his writing, his audio recordings,

and from directly relating with him.

Before we teamed up in 2011, I’d been studying his work and adapting it to succeed in my work from way back in 2002. It does not matter what part of the world

you’re in. If you know how to adapt them to suit your peculiar local needs, Burt’s ideas and strategies WILL work for you. I am living proof of it!

That’s why I never tire of CONFIDENTLY recommending him to others.

If you need help putting the ideas shared above to use, let me know HERE.

Send Me 14 Photos, and I’ll Use Them to Create a Branded PDF Calendar/Meeting Planner for YOU (Hint: But DO THIS FIRST!)

2 days ago I sent out an email offering to create a FREE branded PDF calendar/meeting planner for EACH of my clients, using photos/images they send me(click here to download my 2016 FREE Calendar).

Screenshot of pages from my FREE 2016 Branded PDF Calendar/Meeting Planner - click to download it now

If you’re a client, and plan to take up my offer, then as you read the reproduced email message excerpts below, imagine that I’m “speaking” to YOU.

Once you’ve done that, take steps to ensure the images you send to me, are optimized using any of the options I’ve outlined in my message.

If you don’t do that, I’ll have to reply saying I cannot create the promised PDF for you.

This post spells out requirements any client interested in taking up my offer to create branded PDF calendar/meeting planner using images s/he supplies MUST conform with.

I realized I should have put up this information BEFORE sending out my offer, after having difficulty downloading images sent to me by one of those who responded.

This happened due to their rather large sizes, and the unfortunate development of erratic connectivity around the same time I began trying to access them. We’ve since gotten the PDF done, but I’m publishing this post, for others to read, so they know how their images need to reach me.

What follows below is based on the verbatim email message I sent to the client whose images I had the problem with.

Like I always tell my readers, I sometimes deliberately write my email messages to clients in “explanatory mode”, if I feel what I’m telling them would be useful to share with others. That way, when I dispatch the email, I can later return to use it as the “body” for a blog post to share with others I anticipate may find the information useful

Hi Taiye,

About 3 of the images gave me download problems due to their rather large sizes.

I (made) repeated attempts to download, but what I ended up with were versions in which the images were only partially displayed.

I tried improvising by combining 2 to make 1 image (see page 4 – February), and also cropping out the bad sections in others.

Unfortunately, 2 pages STILL remain without images I can use i.e. December 2016 and January 2017.

So I think it’s best you find a way to get them to me at reduced sizes).

They were in the email titled “3rd Batch 4 Pictures, which you sent via tayo at tayosolagbade dot com

The filenames are:

1. 20150819_105844.jpg (7.5 MiB)

2. 20150526_133145.jpg (5.4 MiB)

3. _DSC0246.JPG (7 MiB)

There’s something I neglected to mention yesterday, that could have prevented this from happening.

Attached are 2 examples of BEFORE and AFTER versions (named “taiwo…”.jpg) of images you sent me.

You’ll notice they are many times smaller than the ones I downloaded from your email.

The article linked below is one that I wrote several years (on September 03, 2007) back…

It’s meant to guide persons intending to email images or photos on how to reduce the sizes of the images, to make it easyfor the SENDER to attach and send them, and also for the RECEPIENT to download them.

My decision to write it back then was due to a client’s staff sending me over 50 HUGE photos and images meant for a web design project, that could have been trimmed down, with NO loss of display quality using the techniques I mention in the article.

The steps I enumerate in it are those that I followed to create the smaller versions of the images attached to this email.

Click to read it on my Ezinearticles.com profile

In case you do not have ready access to Photoshop or Corel Draw, ask a friend you know to be familiar with graphic editing.

Alternatively, go to Google.com and search for “Free website to reduce the size of my photo” – or something along that line.

You should get a web link to a web based FREE service that will enable you create much smaller sized versions of the photos without damaging the quality.

Once you have those reduced images, just email them to me and I’ll generate the complete PDF calendar and email to you.

****Now, in case none of the above options is convenient for you, consider purchasing the editable MS Word template for $150 USD.

Once you make payment, I would email the template to you, with VIDEO instructions on how to insert your own photos, add quotable quotes etc.

The advantage of taking up this option is that you not only get to make multiple calendar versions for yourself, but you will also be able to create calendars for others.

THE FARM CEO (Issue 28): Are You a CEO/Expert With Useful Insights to Share? [Hint: CEO Spotlight Interview Invitation], Automate Your Records Keeping & Accounting For Profitable Farm Planning, Every Farm Business, No Matter How Small, Needs PC-Based Record Keeping & Accounts Automation, 14 Key Issues To Consider In Order To Choose (& Successfully Startup) The Right Farm Business

[Tagline: If it can help your farm business, you’ll find it in THE FARM CEO™ Newspaper ]

As the year draws to a close, we have 2 more issues to go before January 2016. So I’ve decided to focus on the critical yet often neglected aspects required for achieveing success in business, be it farming or any other. I refer to the need to be entrepreneurial.

For those who do not know, running a farm business requires that you become an agro-entrepreneur, and not just an agriculturist. This is because technical and/or farming skills are NOT all you need to make a success, especially financially, of your farm business.

This may sound obvious as I say it here, but the actions of MANY MANY farm CEOs indicates most do NOT realize it. And quite often most of those who fail, do so because of that failure to acknowledge this fact.

The article below offers potentially useful insights…

PREVIEW

In this article I explain why ANYONE starting a farm business needs to realise that s/he MUST become an entrepreneur in order to succeed.
For many people this will require changes in spending habits, use of personal time, friendships kept- and most importantly THINKING HABITS !

Automate Your Records Keeping & Accounting For Profitable Farm Planning

In this article, I explain the importance of establishing and maintaining reliable farm records keeping/accounting systems as it is a crucial requirement for successful planning & profitable management of your farm business.

As they say, if you do not record it you cannot measure it.

And if you do not measure it, you cannot control it. Which is the same thing as saying you cannot plan for it. In essence, I am saying that keeping detailed and accurate farm records and accounts is a crucial requirement for effective and profitable farm planning.

Your Farm NEEDS Diligently Kept Records/Accounts

One thing lacking in most agricultural entreprises out here is detailed and accurate records of activities that take place as operations are carried out.

For peasant farmers who are usually illiterate, it can possibly be considered pardonable if they can’t say what inputs (herbicide types, quantities etc) they used the past year. But for the growing population of literate farmers, there cannot be any excuse. Then again literate or otherwise, every farm owner who wishes to enjoy reasonably predictable profits MUST as a matter of priority keep and analyse detailed farm records.

Without detailed and accurate records, farm business planning and management effectively becomes a game of guestimations and unguided assumptions which rarely produce desired results with consistency.

To effectively manage a farm, the farmer needs to have ready access to extensive information concerning past costs and returns, input use, production levels, existing financial situation, including the physical conditions of the farm. S/he also has to know about likely future costs, future returns of production etc.

This information can be acquired from farm records and accounts, as well as from all farm sources like research/experimental stations, demonstration plots, universities etc.

In essence, the farmer needs to have records of what has happened before, is happening now and what is likely to happen in future.

What Exactly Can Farmers Do With Farm Records/Accounts?

The following are specific BENEFICIAL uses farmers will readily find for diligently kept farm records and accounts:

1. Farm Planning & Budgetting:

The most realistic way to plan farm production and prepare accompanying budgets is to refer to estimates based on historical data available from past periods of operation. If it’s a new farm, then other sources will be referred to.

2. Farm Performance Evaluation:

Without accurate physical and corresponding accounting records, it will be practically impossible to accurately establish how well a farm entreprise has performed over a defined period. With accurate physical records and corresponding records, evaluation of the farm performance is easy, simple and a matter of routine, PLUS one is sure of progress of the farm business over a time period.

Specifically, accurate records and accounts show how, within a period of time, labour costs or feed costs for example have either been increasing or decreasing, and how revenue from various entreprises has been increasing or decreasing either because of price changes or changes in physical production.

3. Daily Farm Decision Making:

Farm records and accounts are essential for day to day decision making especially because they show the strong and weak points in management. A farm entreprise may not be doing well because of a particular factor of production, but such a factor may be difficult to identify/isolate in the abscence of good records and accounts.

For instance in pig farming, it is reported that good farm performance depends on large and frequent litters, economical use of feed, mortality rate, marketing the pigs at the right weight etc. Without accurate records and accounts therefore, it would be dificult to identify which of these factors is contributing to low profits for instance. The records will show which areas need improving upon.

4. Securing Credit/Loan Support:

There is probably no bank which will not require a farm business to produce adequate physical records with the corresponding accounting records and the overall farm plan, before it can give credit/loan support.

Incidentally, this requirement helps both parties: the bank uses it to know the current state of the farm as well as offers advice. The farmer on the other hand will work to achieve his/her goals in order to fulfill his/her obligation to pay back the extended credit.

Banks need to be convinced that money given out will be used for what is being asked for, and that can only be done by presenting records of what one has already been doing.

5. Taxation & Insurance Purposes:

To avoid over or underpaying taxes, good records and accounts are essential. Insurance on relevant farm assets can only be done properly if records are available and accurate.

Summary

a. By keeping farm records and accounts, you, the farmer will be equipped to periodically evaluate your overall farm performance using three (3) simple but powerful ratios which I describe in full detail in my customisable on-demand talks on Best Practice Farm Performance Measurement and Improvement (Call 0803-302-1263 for details).

b. You will know where to place emphasis (using the 80:20 Pareto principle), and will be able see dangerous trends earlier and take needed evasive action.

c. Diligently kept farm records and accounts will help you determine where and/or when you are under (or over) estimating your farm costs (or sales/gains).

d. Good farm records and accounts help reliably measure the impact of unexpected market changes on the farm business’ bottom line e.g. policy and price changes announced by government.

In relation to the above last part, the use of custom software automation for records keeping would enable you punch in the new input prices and quickly see how badly it affects your planned/projected production and/or sales margins – as well as other key performance indicators.

Do you own – or plan to own – a farm business? Why not consider automating your farm records keeping and accounting using a custom software application like those that I build for my clients?

You will be able to cost-effectively and efficiently realise all the benefits outlined above in the body of this article.

The Hood Does Not Make the Monk. School Uniforms Don’t Guarantee Learning!

"Clothes don’t make a man" – said Jay-Jay’s mum to him in an episode of the popular ’80’s American sitcom – Good Times.

The hood does not make the monk. School uniforms don’t guarantee your child is learning all s/he needs. Don’t abdicate your primary parenting responsibility, which is to teach him/her what s/he needs to know.

Check and confirm that your child’s teachers/school are giving him/her the right QUALITY of learning.

Do this by interacting with your child based on what s/he is expected to know and be able to do. If you notice any shortcomings, especially in aspects relating to important foundational concepts, call the attention of the teacher/school to it. Then wait, watch and check again for changes. If none, or too little, either do it yourself or hire a COMPETENT private tutor.

Personally I recommend doing it yourself. Today, even finding competent private tutors that can give reliable value for money is not easy.

What’s more, quite often, doing it yourself produces other benefits beyond improved learning in your child.

And if you doubt that YOU can teach your child successfully, take it from me when I say you were born to be a teacher to others, young or not, starting with your own kids.

Indeed as a parent you are your child’s best teacher!

Incidentally, after attended university in Nigeria, many of us observed our compulsory year of post-graduation national service working as school teachers.

It was often not up to us to choose. We simply reported to our respective place of primary assignment, and if it turned out to be a school, or locality where school teachers were in short supply, you were most likely to get posted to serve as a teacher for one or more subjects.

As a matter of fact some of us actually taught students in preparation for their final qualifying WAEC exams.

I observed my service year in Gulu-Vatsa village in Lapai LGA of Niger state. There I found myself officially assigned to GSS Gulu teaching Maths, and Agriculture.

But not for from that school was GGSSS where I later got drafted to teach the same subject as word spread about my habit of putting in extra hours to help the students catch up on several areas they were yet to cover.

Note here that I taught mainly final year students preparing for the WACE examinations, and so had to test them with questions at that level. What I found out was that they had VERY little in terms of their foundational knowledge to get them successfully through the exams.

Yet I recalled that at 16, I’d successfully self-studied for, and passed my WAEC exams just a few months after returning from a 2 week suspension.

The suspension followed a blitz of bad behaviour in which I, as a School Health Prefect, along with another prefect, and some seniors, began to routinely miss classes, while playing all sorts of pranks.

The pranks included catching, slaughtering and roasting the Vice Principal’s backyard homestead chickens).

One day we got caught in a trap specially set by the school authorities for us, and it was all over.

What saved me – enabling me fulfil my promised to my disappointed parents, that I would redeem myself by passing the exams – was my sound grasp of the basics of every subject I’d learned.

This derived from the strong reading, comprehension and writing skills I had developed from YEARS of exposure to a mother who took it upon herself to COACH each child till s/he developed reliable proficiency.

To facilitate that process, she created a home environment where books of ALL kinds that were relevant to our study needs were readily available.

Having done that she regularly encouraged us to engage in self study. The result, especially for me, was that I developed the ability to self-teach myself on virtually any subject, and therefore learn any topics I chose to, from the syllabus, even if the school teacher had yet to cover it or was not even around.

Only one compulsory subject gave me problems – both when I was in class as well as when I tried to self-study. It was Maths – and the 5 credits I got from my exams did NOT include it.

Since my mother did not teach that subject, she had not been able to help me with it.

When I got a P7 in the exams, I think my parents asked around and eventually arranged for me to attend private coaching classed at Translat Training Centre, not far from the University of Lagos gate.

It was there that I met a wonderful Igbo gentleman teacher, who took me under his wing and taught me how to overcome my Maths challenge. By the time I took the Nov/Dec GCE exams, less than 6 months later, I scored a distinction (A1).

I should add that I’d become so confident of my Math skills that I’d predicted the "A1" score to my mother, but she’d gently smiled and replied "Tayo, just get a credit. That will do" – apparently thinking of how I had always struggled with the subject.

But something had changed, and that was how I thought about the subject. My new teacher had opened my eyes to see a new way that enabled me apply the intelligence everyone knew I had to succeed at it.

Now, my parents were not the ones who taught me to get over my Math problem. But it’s obvious from the above story that they were the ones who did the thinking, and ultimately identified a competent person or provider (the Training Center), to help me overcome that single limitation.

It was a serious limitation that threatened to hold me back from pursuing further studies at university level – because a CREDIT in Maths was a minimum requirement to continue at that level.

My story illustrates the powerful role parents need to play in their children’s "learning" while they are in their formative years.

The idea is for you to understand that you do NOT need to know EVERYTHING your child needs to learn – and I don’t just mean academics or school work alone.

Instead, you need to get involved in checking or testing to ensure s/he demonstrates a convincing grasp of what s/he is expected to know and be able to do at the right stages of his/her life.

If I were you, however, I would also make a point of including life skills acquisition in the "learning menu" I present to him/her during our interactions when s/he returns from school. That way, the delicate balance in information and education for school and for life is more likely to be achieved.

Today, more than ever, book knowledge alone in NOT enough!

Letting yourself and/or your kids feel satisfied with wearing uniforms, and going to learn academic subjects in school, may be a dangerous game that prevents you from fully preparing them for life AFTER school.

You should remember that your child will one day need to leave home to function as an independent income earning adult away from you.To do that with minimal avoidable setbacks, in today’s world, s/he needs to complement his/her formal schooling with real world relevant knowledge, and skills.

Here’s a tip: Think back to what you have had to LEARN that formal schooling never taught you, but which you’ve found crucial for making your way in the world successfully, in caring for yourself and your family.

Whatever comes to your mind are possible examples of what YOU as a parent may need to add to his/her life skills LEARNING menu, to complement whatever formal schooling s/he gets!

PS: If you have kids and are reading THIS, know that I say the above from VERY personal experience as a child from my years with my parents, as well as a parent today, to my own kids.

Do the above, and the results you get will make you thank me for telling you to do it.

He is a veteran mentor of some of the World’s Highest Paid Speakers and Creator of the Highly Acclaimed Speaking Success System sold for decades to professional speakers across 5 continents. I was Burt’s Sole Agent promoting his solutions to Africa based experts for several years.

However, what makes his achievements most impressive and compelling is the fact that he dropped out of high school as a teen, to take up paid employment in order to support his mother and siblings. Then he returned to the SAME high school to graduate with a set of students who were 4 years behind him when he dropped out!

And THAT was all he needed to go on to mentor professionals across the world – some PhD holders! – to achieve the highest levels of success in their fields. Watch Video Part 1 of 4 of my interview with him (scroll down) to hear him respond to my question about how he found the courage to return to complete his High School education.
