Societies That Progress Make Their Best Talents Feel Wanted

Nigeria has wonderful talents that can add great value to the world. But they need a favourable environment to flourish. Today, I paid for a nice apartment (photos below) that -post refurbishing – my family will soon join me to live in here in Cotonou.

If I had a choice, I would have stayed in Nigeria…

That’s the truth.

Today, I paid for a nice apartment (photos below) that -post refurbishing - my family will soon join me to live in here in Cotonou.

If I’d not felt stifled while based in Nigeria, I would not have moved here in April 2013.

Unfortunately despite trying hard to patriotically build my brand from within my own country, I eventually had to admit to myself, that nothing was going to change anytime soon.

I had to put my wife and kids into consideration – as well as my dreams and ambitions.

Staying in Nigeria had been killing me “softly and slowly” – in terms of my ability to excel at what I chose to do for a living.

It was that bad.

Click here to read the article in which I outlined the combination of unfavourable factors that forced me to relocate.

When I muted the idea of moving next door to Benin Republic, in 2013, someone told me the problem was not Nigeria, but my attitude.

He was about twice my age, and he had run his own business for decades.

Normally, I should have taken his age, and years of experience into consideration. However, I had enough depth of insight to know his view was one-sided.

My insight came from years of carefully analysing my experiences, and comparing with what others reported in their societies.

Also, I had access to powerful books that articulated timeless success philosophies that had been proven to work regardless of geographical location.

All of the above pointed, very clearly, to the what I chose to do for a living, and my attitude of rejecting how “business” was done in Nigeria was not the “problem”.

Instead, the socio-economic environment I chose to work in was actually a major limitation to my ability to progress.

Thankfully, those books I read also proffered a solution.

And it was that sometimes one would need to change the environment from which one was trying to achieve success.

You could ask: But what about those who remained in Nigeria and succeeded?

My answer would be that what I do is different from what they do. And how I choose to achieve my goals may not be how they opt to pursue theirs.

I once read a wise quote which went thus:

“To be well adjusted to a sick society is no sign of good health.” – Anonymous

My experiences confirm the above to be a very accurate statement.

Some people – actually many people – in Nigeria, who run businesses, are good people. However, most of them do not engage in what can be called “ethical” or above board business dealings.

It is possible that not all of them want to do business that way. My interactions with them certainly suggest that they are willing to admit that giving “bribes” or other inducements to win contracts is not right.

However, most have convinced themselves there is no alternative.

In my case, I could not accept to do business that way. But that did not make me judge them.

Instead, I simply avoided going to places where I would encounter “requests” to do such things to get my products and services purchased.

Since the majority of people did not believe in my approach, that meant I got less patronage than I needed.

I was consequently often just limping along financially.

This local challenge made me begin to explore the use of the web to find more people willing to relate with me on my own terms.

But “they” again told me I was wasting my time.

That Africans were not ready to do business that way.

And all that.

When I was still in Nigeria, it appeared they were right.

I found I was not getting as much attention as I needed, despite stepping up my web marketing efforts.

However, I also noticed that I was limited in how much I could do by the fact that I had to use the generator 90% of the time.

In other words, if I got a client project, finishing it to the agreed deadline meant I had to run almost exclusively on generator power, as PHCN, Nigeria’s wonderful power company remained as unreliable as ever.

As you can imagine, fuelling and servicing the generator was no small expense. Apart from the hefty spending I had to do in that regard, there was the wear and tear, as well as the air and noise pollution to consider.

What was worse was that Internet connectivity was also both expensive and periodically expensive.

So, while in Nigeria, I had to incur expenses in multiple directions to finish ONE job. This made taking on multiple projects a potential nightmare.

It was hard to take on multiple projects, out of a fear that one would be unable to deliver as promised.

But that had nothing to do with my abilities. Instead, it had everything to do with the resources available in the environment I chose to work from.

Since relocating to Benin, I have demonstrated just that with my achievements!

For instance, I have repeatedly handled multiple Web Marketing Systems development and Excel-VB Software development projects.

And in between, I’ve travelled to give talks, and write research papers that I got paid for.

Not once did I miss any of the agreed deadlines. Indeed, I have consistently exceeded my clients’ expectations.

This explains why ONE client here in Cotonou has now given me 3 different high profile projects to handle in less than 14 months of meeting me!

Most interesting however is the fact that nearly 90% of sales I make for my products and services today, are to buyers based in Nigeria.

That is the SAME country I had to relocate from, in order to reach my full potential!

All of the above makes it clear that my environment was really a major limiting factor on my ability to excel while I was in Nigeria.

Just yesterday, I published my latest print/physical book.

It is over 80 pages thick but I only began writing it just 6 weeks ago.

If I had been in Nigeria, I really doubt I could have finished and put it online in 6 months, with confidence in the content QUALITY!

The above are key reasons why I had to take this painful decision to move my family to Cotonou.

Another reason is the massive difference in cost of living.

Cost of food here continues to amaze me here. I spend over 4 times LESS for a plate of food, compared to Nigeria.

Now, you can imagine what that means for my family’s upkeep.

I still earn income the same way, but I’ll be making HUGE savings when they get here.

But the savings here, when my family comes down, will not just be on feeding…!

Even getting a hair cut, transportation, photocopy, electricity, water etc costs so MUCH less in Benin. I offered some price comparisons in this article that explains why I relocated.

Even housing is much LESS expensive!

For my nice new apartment, which only needs painting and slight refurbishing, I paid 6 month’s rent, plus a one month “refundable security deposit”, and the agent’s commission (one month’s rent).

Now, at the expiration of the 6 month period, I only have to pay monthly.

Yet the money I paid for this nice place I rented is about half the rental of the place my family lives in currently in Nigeria!

Despite that fact, the space, and finishing of the property here in Cotonou is way better!

Also, in Nigeria, you pay for 2 years and afterwards you pay annually. People have to run around to raise funds to pay rent. Some subsequently struggle to feed their families for weeks, before they recover. Life is made needlessly harsh in Nigeria!

So far, the only major exception – in terms of costs – is my Blackberry subscription.

Here in Benin, I pay the equivalent of 1 month’s fee in Nigeria, for a week’s access.

But that is well covered many times over, by the multiple savings I make in virtually all other areas.

The reason we have this disparity in cost of living between both countries is the Nigerian Factor ™

The Nigerian Factor stifles Nigeria’s ability to make it’s gifted citizens willingly come – or stay – home. Here’s how I define it:

“The Nigerian factor is what makes things that work elsewhere fail to work in Nigeria. It is also what makes doing the wrong thing acceptable and doing the right thing condemnable” – Tayo Solagbade

I believes that anyone who truly loves Nigeria will want her to develop to the point where many individual Nigerians will no longer feel a need to flee for Europe and America (and in the case of people like me – Benin, Ghana or even Togo!) in order to achieve worthwhile goals.

Perpetuation of the Nigerian Factor currently makes this development process difficult, if not impossible.

I have a vision to provide information and education for re-orientation towards eliminating the Nigerian Factor.

Why?

Because I believe every business organisation will find her chances of survival and profitable existence threatened, if negative influences that prevent stabilisation of political and economic conditions persist.

Individuals are also guiltly of making the problem worse in Nigeria!

The irony is that those responsible for cutting corners in Nigeria for personal monetary gain are NOT all in government.

Some are individuals in society who think it is smart to exploit the existing loopholes.

Maybe that is why many Nigerians seem incapable of insisting that things be done as expected. They can ask for a while, but they soon give up and accept anything they are told hoping that the problem will resolve itself.

I believe that this LACK OF POLITICAL WILL (note that political will need not be demonstrated through violence) is what makes Nigerians continue to suffer the hardships they complain so much about.

The following quote reinforces this:

“Find out just what any people will quietly submit to, and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them” – Frederick Douglas

Even though I have chosen to work from outside Nigeria, I continue to make myself available to add value to Nigeria and Nigerians using my products and services.

I do this because I LOVE my country and want to help her develop.

However I am not naive enough to blindly put myself – and my family – in harm’s way, be it financially or otherwise, to “help” Nigeria!

My experiences have taught me that people willing to let Nigeria develop are in the minority, both in and out of government.

The majority have found a way to exploit the chaos in the country for personal gain. And so they don’t want things to “change for the better”, for obvious reasons!

So, I know this is not a battle that will be won quickly.

Howeve, with help from the creator, I know we who are of like mind, will join forces, over time, until we win!

[Now Available!] KUKURU DANGER™: 5 True Stories About the Adventures – & Misadventures! – of a School Age Child Trying to Find Purpose in Life.

In this unusual book, Tayo Solagbade narrates 5 true stories about a dizzying variety of (sometimes shocking) escapades he engaged in – while schooling – that repeatedly landed him in trouble, causing his parents avoidable heart breaks.

In the first story, Tayo suffers the embarrassment of having a female classmate falsely accuse him – to their class teacher – of peeping at her in the girls’ room!

He would however shake off the potentially traumatizing experience, to earn a double promotion into enter secondary school one year ahead of his class, in 1980.

At the age of 10, in his first year in secondary school, Kukuru Danger™ (Tayo’s alter ego) joins a notorious group of students, in a bid to escape frequent bullying from bigger and older classmates.

Over the course of the year, they routinely sneak out of school to eat meals at Mai Shai shops without paying, steal coins from trader’s slot machines, and catch crabs at the Lagoon front!

At a point, Kukuru™ begins stealing money from home, to play the slots. But he soon gets caught.

By the school year’s end his mother is shocked to read the principal’s comments at the bottom of his report card, saying “To repeat for cheating”.

No. 153: A “Formula” Schools Need to Teach, But Don’t! (FREE PDF Report)

Any school that teaches this “formula” will discover her products – who apply it diligently – will never beg for jobs, or experience “unemployment”, talk less of poverty. If you think that’s a reckless claim, I challenge you to read this report with an open mind. Unless you detest authentic success, when you’re done, you’ll be EAGER to learn and use the “formula” – and to also teach it to your child – or students!”

The idea I reveal in this new PDF report is the solution to poverty and unemployment anywhere.

Note however that is NOT my brain child. In fact, it came into use many years before I was born.

But, for some strange reason, even some of the best schooled people do not know it, or how to use it.

As a result, they go through life – in spite of all their education, and impressive qualifications – achieving BELOW their God-given potentials!

That’s why I consider discussing this amazing, but little known/understood formula, important enough, to make it the “subject” of this week’s issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter.

But just in case you wonder how this relates to public speaking, my argument is that expert-speakers who serve the EDUCATION industry at all levels (up to tertiary), need to develop “programs” to help schools adapt their curriculum to include this “formula” my report reveals.

I offer my report’s contents to help them get started.

And I’ve also resolved to begin offering my own “programs” towards helping interested institutions make the long overdue modifications to their teaching content.

As experts-who-speak, our key role is to be agents of positive change in society.

And one important area where our insights can make very useful impact on society is EDUCATION.

I hope you will join me in this worthy cause.

Come to think of it, your children – and mine – stand to benefit as well!

“Bleaching” Your Skin Insults Your Creator, and Makes You Lose Dignity (Message from Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Lupita Nyong’o to Black/African Parents & their Children)

One of Fela’s most popular songs when I was a child was :”Yellow Fever” – released when I was 6 years old, in 1976. I LOVED that song. Still do too(see Youtube video below)! He was basically challenging skin-bleaching black men and women, who wanted to become “white” by force, out of an inferiority complex, to change their ways.

Click to watch on Youtube here.

Apart from his fierce defence of human rights, as being each person’s “personal property’ and therefore NOT to be “given” to us by others, Fela also launched “lyrical” attacks on corrupt governments/individuals.

And of course he constantly challenged the individual African to treat him/herself with respect.

I named my first child “OLUFELA” in 1999, in honour of Fela! Just like his daughter said in this pictured poster, he was – and remains – a major influence on my thinking about how to be a PROUD AFRICAN.

Sadly, many hypocritical parents/adults focused on his weed smoking as a convenient excuse to ignore his wise – and prophetic – counsel.

Most of Fela’s songs, always carried clear and powerful messages to either the common people, or the government of the day, or “colonial” powers.

As an adult African, and parent, today, one of the things that bothers me the most is the apparent self-hate that Africans/black skinned people seem to have for their skin colour…and hair.

Today, I travel around quite a bit, and I see that the problem is worse. Women especially, African WOMEN in particular, continue with this sickening habit.

I look around me and it appears every time I see 5 normal skinned black persons, at least ONE rainbow coloured skinned woman passes by as well!

In Lagos-Nigeria and Cotonou-Benin Republic, where I currently do most of my traveling, this skin “bleaching” trend is like some kind of competition!

And all sorts of crazy skin creams are arriving the markets, to feed this madness!

The sad thing is that they NEVER end up better off…as Fela points out in his lyrics.

He starts by explaining that there are 2 kinds of Yellow “Fever” – the Original one (i.e. the actual sickness) and the artificial (skin bleaching from black to lighter tone in an effort to look white)

===

Original and artificial he dey!

Bom bom bom, tell me now…

Original catch you

Your eye go yellow

Your yansh go yellow

Your face go yellow

Your body go weak

I say but later if you no die inside

The yellow go fade away

Artificial catch you

You be man or woman

Na you go catch am yourself

Na your money go do am for you

You go yellow pass yellow

You go catch moustache for face

You go get your double colour

Your yansh go black like coal

You self go think say you dey fine

Who say you fine?

[Chorus]

Na lie, you no fine at all!

At all, na lie!

My sister, who say you fine?

[Chorus]

Na lie, you no fine at all!

At all, na lie!

Yellow fever

[Chorus]

You dey bleach, o you dey bleach!

You dey bleach, o you dey bleach

African mother

You dey bleach, o you dey bleach

====

Read the lyrics to the song here (http://www.lyricsbay.com/yellow_fever_lyrics-fela_kuti.html)

Add to that the thirst by the same women to wear imported long straight hair, that the God they claim to BELIEVE in, never thought it wise to give them at birth, and you discover a pandemic of unimaginable proportions!

This need to avoid a loss of identity, as an African, is one of the reasons I have vowed to coach my own kids to be comfortable with who they are, and what they look like.

That is, to have what sane human beings know as SELF-ESTEEM.

It is why I’m publishing my new book titled “Kukuru Danger™ about my own childhood search for self-discovery and purpose.

I too suffered a need to belong, and to be accepted, right from my early years and even in my later adult years. But by listening to Fela’s lyrics, and also reading books about self-development, I learnt to believe in myself, and never feel inferior to any other human being.

Today, that mental attitude serves me well in my dealings with people – regardless of who they are, how important they are (or think they are) or where they come from – even if from MARS!

More Africans need to realize that the world appreciates them for being the way they are, MORE than it will ever appreciate them for trying to be what they are inherently NOT.

And if we ever needed proof of the above stated fact, well Lupita Nyong’o’s example perfectly fits the bill. And luckily for us, she herself shared a familiar story that proves she knows what others with her skin complexion pass through.

But she arrived on the world stage and discovered it was willing to accept her, if she accepted herself.

Today, she is celebrated by virtually everyone who is anyone in her industry…yet her complexion remains the same, and so does the hair on her head!

How I wish African women and their men (some tell me their women look “more beautiful” after bleaching!) will wake and rediscover the pride and essence of being who they are.

Some try to make it sound less nasty by calling it skin toning, and they refer to those with money (e.g female black celebrities) who “successfully changed” skin colours as justification for doing it too.

How lame! Goes right back to the lack of identity and self-esteem I started this article with.

Look, white skinned people get sun tanned skins by spending time in the sun, or using sun tan lotions. But the effects are never permanent. If they stop, their skin changes back to it’s natural white. But a black skinned person cannot get a white “tan”, you see. That’s why when a black skinned person goes “yellow” or “white”, s/he never changes back. Now, you can say it’s “toning”, if you like, but THAT, is what I call SKIN BLEACHING (to borrow Fela’s very apt terminology).” – Tayo K. Solagbade

By the way, last time I checked Oprah Winfrey remains globally acknowldged and respected, and I have NOT see her undergo any noticeable skin colour changes.

Should Oprah not be the role model we should all try to emulate in that (and other) respects???

The truth is that the world will be a much better place for us to live in, when we start respecting ourselves.

Only then will others really take us seriously and respect us as well. But if we keep acting as if we’re inferior (and we have NEVER been), then those who relate with us and who see that, will naturally treat us that way.

The choice is yours. What will you do? And what will you TEACH your child to do???

I know what I already do, and I have begun teaching my kids to do it as well. In my family/clan will always be black and proud sons and daughters of Africa!

Lupita ended her wonderful acceptance speech on black beauty with the following words…

“And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.”

I now offer those same words, as a parting message, to my fellow black skinned African women and men who may be tempted to “bleach” their God-given complexions lighter, to feel better about themselves.

Don’t do it. You insult yourself, and your creator if you do. And it will never be worth it!

No. 152: Do You Need Blogging To Achieve More Speaking Success?

I say YES, because to become an expert-who-gets-paid-to-speak, you NEED to establish yourself as a thought leader – indeed an authority – in the minds of your target audience. Blogging is a powerful (and zero cost) strategy that can be used to achieve that outcome for the long term.

I say this as an expert-who-gets-paid-to-speak, who has now been blogging Mondays to Saturdays (sometimes Sundays) for over a year and a half.

The results I’ve gotten in that relatively short period (like this recent one), prove that blogging, properly done, deliver significant, yet timeless self-promotion benefits!

Before I began blogging, I used to publish a monthly web based html newsletter (called the Self-Development Digest™) which I emailed to subscribers.

I did that – monthly – from 2006 right into early 2012.

Then in June 2012, I came across Patrick Meninga’s very educative 1 hour interview with Yaro Starak.

In it he shared the secret of how he started a blog, and through diligent and intelligent hard work, grew it to earn over $2,000 US dollars monthly via Google adsense..

And he also shared details of how he eventually sold the blog for an amazing $200,000 US dollars – becoming an Internet celebrity in the process.

Google “Patrick Meninga” to learn more.

After listening to Patrick’s MP3 interview, I distilled useful lessons I learnt from it, into an article on my blog – for others to learn from.

I did so because I realized blogging provided a much more effective means of promoting one’s work to a target audience. And could see it took much less effort, than I was expending in manually updating my HTML newsletter and website.

WordPress – being the powerful Content Management system that it is – makes the process of writing and publishing one’s ideas so much easier.

And it also lends itself much more readily to being indexed by search engine, by the very nature of its design.

As long as one publishes content that will be considered interesting or potentially useful by one’s desired audience, using WordPress can dramatically boost one’s visibility online in multiple ways e.g. via search engines, as well as on Social Media platforms.

Now, I had already experienced the benefits of writing useful content even with the manual HTML approach I was using (on my 9 year old former primary domain: spontaneousdevelopment.com)

I had also used article marketing via www.ezinearticles.com to boost the promotional reach of my writing.

Over the years, I’d seen my write ups get widely republished by other website publishers who picked it up via Ezinearticles.com. And the results had come in form of pre-qualified traffic to my website – some of which resulted in sales of my products.

Apart from the growing website traffic, I’d also over the years seen my books get purchased from my online store. Sales reports popping into my email in box, each week.

Then there were the websites that published reports, term papers and other resources, in which they quoted me on topics like Emotional Intelligence, based on articles I’d written.

In addition, I had the publisher of a university journal, in India, write me for permission to include my article titled “Are Your Employees Happy & Satisfied With Their Jobs? (A Ten Item Quiz That Can Help You Find Out). That journal has since been published and put on sale – my article was included, with my permission.

In essence I’m saying that I had seen how my relentless commitment to writing useful content enabled me build name recognition, credibility and authority status.

It therefore occurred to me that using blogging the way Patrick Meninga recommended it be done, would simply enable me take the results I was getting to a MUCH higher level.

Like I said at the start of this piece, as an expert in your chosen field, you are a potential thought leader.

But note the word I used there: POTENTIAL.

As long as you are competent and qualified, it means you have, in you the capacity, and capability, to become a thought leader in your field.

However, you must MANIFEST that potential. That is, you must put it to work for you.

The most effective way to do that will be to share your ideas, experiences, insights etc.

Now, a variety of ways exist to share what you know, in order to get accepted as an authority.

Speaking is a very obvious one of them…

However, you first have to get people to think highly enough of you to invite you to speak!

You have to SHOW them you know enough of something they desire to learn about.

To do that, you need to offer them “samples” of your knowledge and insights. And you have to do this on a regular basis, without relenting. That way, they will believe you have MORE to offer.

What’s more, if you do this right, they will actually assume you will be a better knowledge provider to connect with, compared to any competitors or rivals they are aware you have.

My experiences and observations convince me that offering such “samples” to your target audience is best done by writing creatively.

By CREATIVELY, I mean not just writing randomly, but doing it in a way that is deliberate and constantly evolving

This belief was what I based my entry into blogging upon, back in June 2012 (and today, I’m reaping massive multi-dimensional rewards, even more than I’d imagined possible) .

I knew I needed to do as Patrick had said – share passionately, what I knew. And I was already used to doing that from the article writing I’d been doing for years.

But I was excited to see the organized structure that a blog would help me achieve. For instance, the archives facilitated review of what I’d written, and exploring book ideas from them.

In fact, my new book titled “Kukuru Danger™: Adventures (& Misadventures!) of a School Age Child Trying to Make Sense of the World and his purpose in it!”  which I will publish in my online store this week, was partly written using 2 articles I wrote on this blog last year.

And I’m already compiling material to publish a book on public speaking using a collection of my most read blog posts on the subject in a few weeks. [ See what I mean? And this is apart from the many successes (paid speaking/product sales wise) I’ve shared about in past articles.]

Those were the additional benefits of blogging that I foresaw. And they are what people who fit your target audience profile WILL SEE, when they check you out!

The writing you churn out via your blog (if useful) will gradually win them over, making them consider you ahead of your peers.

By the time decision makers contact you, and you “converse”with them in a manner that shows you’re as good as your written content suggests you are, chances are good they’ll choose to hire you over others.

It’s simple common sense. No meeting planner wants to hire a speaker who will under perform or disappoint.

So they always want to assure themselves you have the depth, and delivery, that is required to impress their members.

Your blog, with updated, and useful content gives them a good avenue to establish that, to a great extent.

I like to think of it as proactive/futuristic marketing, in which you’re writing now, to meet the needs and interests of potential clients, who are yet to “find you”.

By the time they do, you’ll have built a critical mass of useful content that will entice them to contact you!

But get this: If you do your blogging, as part of a Web Marketing System, such that videos, audios, and other “content” are accessible through it/via social media, you’ll achieve multiple benefits.

Final Words: Blogging – done on a consistent basis, to share useful content – boosts an expert’s credibility, and earns him/her authority status.

When that happens, s/he will naturally become an “attractive” option for meeting planners looking to hire an expert-who-speaks.

Note that apart from boosting your chances of getting hired to speak, “visibility” conferred by blogging can also attract new/repeat sales leads to you, for products and services you offer!

And that’s why many leading experts-who-speak, and even renowned mentors of highly paid speakers (like this one), use blogging for self-promotion.

Achieve Parenting Success By Telling True Stories (Hint: About Your Childhood Failures & Successes)

I wrote my new book titled KUKURU DANGER™ for my kids. It’s a collection of 4 TRUE stories about my trouble filled years between the ages of 10 and 16. In this article, I explain why I decided to offer it to other children and their parents.

The book is subtitled “Adventures (& Misadventures!) of a School Age Child Trying to Make Sense of the World and his purpose in it!”

And I end each story in it with tips and insights based on my experiences, and achievements during that time, and since.

Stories have a powerful influence on people – regardless of age. Especially true ones…

I have been educated and empowered by stories of other people. Important lessons about how to win in life come from studying the mistakes as well as successes of others.

This knowledge drove me to invest many long hours (waking up at 3/4 a.m. sometimes, to do my recordings) into finishing the writing of this new book and creating the accompanying resources (the audio narrations).

You see, since I began spending more time away from my kids (after relocating to Cotonou, from Lagos 15 months ago), I’ve wondered how to continue the real world relevant coaching/preparation I’ve been giving them.

And so, the above desire was another source of inspiration I tapped into, to finish this new book.

It occurred to me that apart from entrepreneurship projects I periodically engage them in (e.g. making pineapple peel drinks and cakes which they now sell), I could also create learning resources for them to use via self-study.

That (i.e. self-tutoring) happens to be one of the many useful skills I’ve been coaching them to develop.

So I began to spend my quiet time, when free from client projects, recalling major episodes of trouble I got into back in my formative years.

Then I would sit down and record 30 to 45 minute audio clips narrating what transpired in elaborate detail. All the naughty things I did, along with school mates and peers. I left nothing out.

The ultimate purpose is to give my kids a feel of what my childhood was like, and why/how my inspiration to live a purpose fill life like I do today, comes from there.

I’m using an app I found online to create promotional cartoon short story clips based on the book’s contents, which will be available for download from my website.

The photo below is a cartoon version of the original which was taken when I was about 8 years. I’ll be using this cartoon version on the book’s cover.

This is a cartoon version of an original photo of me, taken when I was about 8 years. I'll be using this cartoon version on the book's cover.
This is a cartoon version of an original photo of me, taken when I was about 8 years old. I’ll be using this cartoon version on the book’s cover.

The audio narrations are also ready. Every buyer of the book gets the audio version on an auto run DVD FREE (or via download as MP3).

Below: Another photo of me…this time more than 3 decades older than I was in the 1st photo above. This 2nd photo was taken this morning (25th July 2014) in Cotonou, Benin Republic at 8.30 a.m.

Another photo of me...this time more than 3 decades older than I was in the 1st photo above. This 2nd photo was taken this morning (25th July 2014) in Cotonou, Benin Republic at 8.30 a.m.

I’d just had a quick meal of spaghetti at my favorite spot on the way to one of the cafes I use.

And I have 6 of my own kids now. 3 of them between 11 and 15.

So, my decision to write my book came mainly from thinking of how to share my experiences when I was that age, with them.

I felt – from watching their reactions when I told them some of the stories – that we would connect better that way.

Experience has also taught me that doing this makes it easier to help people. They get to reflect on what they “learn” at their own pace.

Each of my kids owns an MP3 player with a memory card, that I bought a while back…

They listen to music most times on the devices, despite my warnings :-)

But I have also discovered that they do play the MP3 recordings I did of myself saying words in French and translating to English.

That’s actually one of the main reasons I bought those things – as part of their preparation to break the into learning the French language, towards joining me here in Cotonou.

When I meet them on my next visit, the MP3 versions of the stories from this new book, will be copied on to each child’s memory card, so s/he can listen and play back at will.

And each one will also get a copy of the complete book.

Final Words: I have big plans for my kids – And I feel every parent should have the same for their kids too!

I want my kids to make a better success of life than I did at their age. This will better equip them to be more competent in adulthood than they would be without such guidance.

It is my firm belief that parents need to play such roles in the lives of their kids, especially in today’s increasingly wayward world.

That’s why I urge you not to stop at just making sure they get “formal education”.

You need to give them a part of yourself, that will help them find meaning and direction in life.

It is to help other parents who may wish to do the above, that I decided NOT to limit my book and its audios to my kids.

Instead, I’ve chosen to publish it for purchase as a physical/print book that can be shipped to buyers anywhere in the world. Those who want a digital version in any of the popular formats will also be able to buy it from the same location – my online store i.e So, on Monday 28th July 2014,, I should be announcing the “release” (LOL!) of my “book of 4 true and educative childhood stories”: Kukuru Danger.

If you wonder what “Kukuru Danger” means, don’t worry, the promotional cartoon clips will soon make it known!

In the meantime, have a great weekend everyone. I know I will!

Readers Become Leaders ONLY If They Do The Right Kind of Reading!

Michael Angier once wrote that:

“Reading can be a powerful catalyst for thinking; it has the potential for stimulating wisdom.”.

I agree…but I would add that the “kind” of reading you do, will often be more important than the frequency at which you do it!

For instance, in talking about “reading”, I’m not referring here to gossip/entertainment magazines or even religious books!

Those can form part of one’s diet, but they should NEVER be the main course. Otherwise, one is likely to end up with a version of the “rickets of the mind” that Jim Rohn once wrote about.

In truth, if everybody spent their quality time only reading jokes, or books on religion, sports, comedy and entertainment in general, this planet would die a rapid death.

To get more leaders we need people to read MORE non-fiction texts. Indeed, even those who write fiction have benefitted from doing this!

It’s important to remember that many resources (e.g innovations) that make the world progress, were developed by people who spent (and spend!) their quality time THINKING up new and better ways of doing things.

And they do not do that by sitting in front of the TV, or going to comedy shows, or reading religious books round the clock.

Instead, they spend (and spend!) considerable time in research stations or other work spaces, to create, innovate and invent for mankind to take MORE quantum leaps forward.

That’s however not to say those who create and innovate, are only those who stay indoors to work…!

I’m just saying those who “lead” us in that manner often focus on thinking about how to make improvements happen, in their respective fields.

And very often, if asked, they will tell you they do lots of reading to help that process!

Interestingly, even the sportsmen and entertainers who excel at the highest levels in their fields, have reported that READING and THINKING played a great part in their phenomenal evolution.

Click here to read examples about the testimonials by legendary achievers from all walks of life, about the impact that reading Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich had on their personal and work related performances.

On the above page, celebrity boxers, basketball stars, music stars and even pastors(!), were quoted as saying great benefits accrued to them from reading “Think & Grow Rich”.

And yet that book is NOT about sports, or music, and certainly NOT religion!

However, we must give them credit for doing it right.

When they read that book, they did not stop there. Instead, they did what the author said, and went out to apply what they learnt from it. And that was what led them to success.

“Reading without thinking gives a disorderly mind, and thinking without reading makes one unbalanced” – Confucius.

I have also read “Think & Grow Rich”.

And in many of my past write ups, dating as far back as 2002, I have attested to the amazing insights it provides about achieving personal success – in ANY field.

The road map, and guidelines are clearly given.

You simply follow them, with unrelenting persistence and faith, to get the promised results.

Sadly, our educational system as it currently is does not really teach us to enjoy reading and thinking.

We all know that in many schools and institutions of higher learning today, the student only has to memorise notes given by the teacher, and do a “verbatim return to sender” to get full marks in class!

Whether the student can explain what he has written down, apply it in real life for a productive end is never an issue as far as the teacher is concerned!

Sometime in the past, I watched an inter-schools debate competition aired on a local TV station in Nigeria.

I was amazed by the ability of the students to make their arguments by reeling off one point after another, employing sophisticated vocabulary (that even university undergraduates would struggle with!) in the process.

The manner in which they delivered their speeches, however strongly suggested they were simply reciting what they memorized!

Typically, the teacher would write on paper for the student to “upload” to “memory”, for later “download” during his/her presentation.

As a result, the kids rarely made effort to understand what they read.

I believe that was why some of the students got totally confused, when they missed a line during their “recitation”!

That happened on more than one occasion during the debate event I watched that day.

My question is “what responsible school teacher or school owner would allow such damage to be done to students’ thinking abilities in order to win a competition?”.

In Robert Kiyosaki’s book “If You Want To Be Rich and Happy, Don’t Go To School?”, he wrote about how the traditional educational system was teaching American children to be “mindless parrots”.

He also quoted R. Buckminster Fuller on how each of us, and our children, can protect our minds from being “numbed” by such experiences.

Fuller stated that despite the fact that he was bothered by – and therefore questioned – many of the things he learnt in school, he found it necessary to give his teachers “their” answers in order to ensure he went through school successfully.

He however made sure he never stopped thinking along the lines of those things he felt to be true.

By so doing, Fuller was able to protect his own genius from the damaging impact of the traditional educational system. The rest of us can learn from this approach, and teach our kids to use it as well.

There is a frustrating dearth of real thinkers in Nigeria…and I dare say Africa in general

One great thinker we had who – unfortunately – has now passed on, was Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary Afro Beat Musician.

Even today, the lyrics of his songs show us how far ahead he had thought about (and “seen” into) the future of this country – and continent.

He had reflected deeply over the problems of the black race in Africa, and tried to open our eyes to the folly of the ways we chose (or were advised to follow).

A few of us listened, but the majority have missed it.

Why? Because those who missed it found it difficult to reflect on what he was saying and understand his concerns.

They simply stopped at enjoying his good music!

“The mind must be exercised if it is to grow and strengthen. The more you use your mind, the more it will improve your ability to think” – Jay Anderson

This inability (or unwillingness?) to think is not unusual. Long ago, Henry Ford said:

“Thinking is the most exacting job there is, which is why so few people engage in it”.

That’s why we need to discourage ROTE Learning (i.e. cramming) in schools.

It is important for people to “understand” what they “learn” because we learn new things in order to apply them to productive purposes later.

For instance, you learn “how to drive” so that you can eventually drive your car around unaided.

As Robert Kiyosaki explained in one of his books, if we employed the “traditional” school approach, you would learn all the theory of driving by memorizing the steps involved.

But, you would actually spend little (if any) time practicing how to drive the car using your new knowledge!

When that happens, you end up unable to drive a car even though you’ve been to driving school! Thankfully that is hardly ever the case, because it is easy to assess the value of the training given you in a driving school.

When you complete your driving lessons (and IF you have been a diligent student), you should be able to drive a car by the time you are leaving.

If you can’t, then you would have a right to challenge your driving “teacher”.

Final Words

“A chapter a day, keeps failure at bay” – Anon.

I have personally met many graduates of computer science from Nigerian universities, who after graduation go on to enrol for courses in private computer schools to gain basic computer appreciation skills!!

This is often because they discover that in the real world, the things they’ve been taught are outdated, and irrelevant to current developments in the industry.

If the problem is from their “teachers” and the students are unable to (or unsuccessful in) getting them to change their methods, such learners MUST invest personal time and effort to LEARN using the proper methods.

And that would be by reading to understand, and then THINKING based on what they have read and understood.

Those who do so are the ones who succeed in today’s world. That’s because they emerge as independent learners i.e. person’s capable of learning and apply what they learn to productive ends in the real world.

In the 21st century and beyond, the world will be depending more on such people, for it’s evolution to new levels.

The above is why a visionary genius like Alvin Toffler once wrote as follows:

“The illiterate of the 21st century, will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn” – Alvin Toffler

A Powerful Tool for Solving Your Website’s RSS Feed Problem (Based on a True Story)

When I posted my video based blog last Thursday, no RSS feeds appeared for it on my Facebook wall. But I assumed it was a glitch from the RSS syndication service I use. When it happened again the next day, I knew it was time to be concerned! This article explains how I spent 2 hours investigating and eventually rectifying the problem.

RSS feeds can be powerful tools for driving (actually “PULLING”) traffic to your website

That is, if they are properly setup and used.

And also if you churn out content that’s perceived as useful by your target audience.

I estimate that mine have always brought me over 80% of my website traffic. When you publish a blog post, and within seconds you see the number of views rise, it’s often due to people subscribed to your RSS feeds.

They see your published feeds much more readily than others. But you will rarely know who they are, except for those who choose to signup to your mailing list.

A growing number of people today want to avoid adding to the avalanche of e-mails they get. So they prefer to use RSS feeds to decide who to follow and what to read.

Smart website owners realize that maintaining valid RSS feeds is crucial to their ability to PULL traffic in…

This is why they always check that their RSS feeds are working.

In my case, every now and then I click the link to my Feed burner managed RSS link, and watch to ascertain it loads correctly.

The screenshot below shows what it normally looks like.

In my case, every now and then I click the link to my Feed burner managed RSS link, and watch to ascertain it loads correctly.
In my case, every now and then I click the link to my Feed burner managed RSS link, and watch to ascertain it loads correctly.

But even if I did not click on the RSS link, another readier way I can check is by watching my feeds on Facebook.

Having setup my RSS feeds to appear on my Facebook profile each time I post a new blog, all I have to do is check that the preview for that new post appears on my wall.

The screenshot below shows an example.

Having setup my RSS feeds to appear on my Facebook profile each time I post a new blog, all I have to do is check that the preview for that new post appears on my wall.
Having setup my RSS feeds to appear on my Facebook profile each time I post a new blog, all I have to do is check that the preview for that new post appears on my wall.

Well, last Thursday, that did not happen: Nothing appeared on my wall!

When I noticed that, I shook it off as being due to a possible glitch in the syndication service I use (i.e. RSS Graffiti).

But the next day when I posted another blog, and my wall was again left bare!

At that point I knew there was a problem – and its impact on my posts was immediately obvious.

The one from the day before had recorded less than 5 views. Normally, there would have been at least 20 to 25 views within 24 hours.

Indeed before I lost my 9 year old former domain (spontaneousdevelopment.com), most of my posts would have gotten up to 50 or more views within 24 hours.

These are of course not big numbers, but their fidelity is rarely in question. And I periodically get sales leads that I sometimes convert to sales via this channel – from within and outside Africa too.

That’s why I would say an RSS feed is a reliable indicator of the quality of your web content.

You don’t know them. So they don’t have to worry about you feeling offended if they do not read your stuff.

If it’s good they will click and come over to read.

If it’s not, they’ll ignore it.

Which is why I reckon more with people who have large RSS feeds in partcular – and to some extent those with large mailing lists. Both often have prequalfied prospects (or potential buyers) in there…

As for people who brandish huge website traffic figures, I believe that’s not as useful an index of performance as the aforementioned. And I say this from experience. Traffic regardless of source makes no sense. We want human beings potentially interested in what we offer.

Getting traffic by any means is not an efficient way to get such people. And it can often cost more than it saves or makes for you. My experience based opinion of course :-))

To find out what was wrong, I went to my blog and clicked the RSS link. Sure enough, I got a scary error message.

Here is it (in part):

“Error on line 200 at column 331. Input is not proper UTF8…indicate encoding…”

I did not know what to do. It had never happened to me before. And I had never read about it either.

But I knew I needed to take corrective and timely action fast. So, like the rule on the web says, I began “Googling it!”

I Googled everything I could think of relating to “repairing RSS feeds” (like this and this). All sorts of website articles came up (like this and this). And I also came across nifty Word press plug-ins (like this one) developed to solve a certain kind of RSS feed problem.

As you can imagine, I hungrily read through the various articles sharing tips about how to solve RSS feed problems the author had encountered.

I also watched videos (like this one) created by website owners who managed to find solutions to their own RSS feed problem version.

But none of the solutions I found online worked for me. Not a single one!

At this point I began to get a bit scared.

I felt like someone who’d been told by a doctor that there was no cure for the ailment he’d been diagnosed with.

But something told me to keep searching. So I Googled some more.

That was when an article appeared in which the author recommended using the popular RSS Feed Validation service, to check what exactly the problem with my feed was.

I’d used that service 2 years back, in checking that my RSS feed was valid.

But I never knew it could be used to TRACE the cause of an invalid feed.

So, this turned out to be a useful learning experience for me!

Within a few seconds of getting to the Feed Validation Service website, I’d generated a report that yellow-highlighted the HTML content in EACH of the blog posts featured in my RSS feed.

And it indicated what line numbers the invalid entries were on.

If you’re familiar with Word press, you know that when editing a post in TEXT mode, you can see the HTML code for the content in it.

If you’re familiar with Word press, you know that when editing a post in TEXT mode, you can see the HTML code for the content in it.
If you’re familiar with Word press, you know that when editing a post in TEXT mode, you can see the HTML code for the content in it.

So, all you have to do is search for the offending bit(s) of code (identified by the Feed Validation Service) in each post, and either modify, or delete it.

Then save that post, and click to view the RSS feed again. If you’ve removed all invalid ones, the feed will display normally.

Also, clicking “Check” on the Feed Validation button for your RSS feed will generate a new results page with this message:

Congratulations! This is a valid RSS feed.”

And I also promised to explain how I did it.

Hope you found it useful.

And if you have any questions, do let me know what they are, in the comments.

I wish you well!

PS: The Feed Validation also noted some minor improvements I could make by removing items that could impede “interoperability with the widest range of feed readers”. I’m already working on that.

No. 150: 4 Tips on Successful Public Speaking…from Muhammad Ali!

Muhammad Ali gave us his gift of beautiful and entertaining boxing. However, I believe an even greater gift he gave us was his unique brand of eloquent & impact-FULL public speaking. Ali remains one of the most widely quoted celebrities to ever grace this planet.

I doubt many will disagree with that sentiment.

Ali, in his prime, was an extremely proficient public speaker…

His many famous one-liners (e.g. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”) earned him incomparable fame worldwide.

Certain insightful experts have however rightly pointed out Communication researchers have often missed the opportunity to examine Ali’s public speaking performances, to distil useful lessons others can learn from them.

I agree.

One of my greatest passions is analyzing successes by authentic achievers. That is persons confirmed to have done it without cutting corners.

Muhammad Ali happens to be one of such persons. And he made it look so easy!

That’s why I want to be like him when I “grow up” :-))

This probably explains why many who admire and celebrate him, do not know that Ali actually spent a series of years barred from boxing. So, he could not box to earn a living.

Documented records indicate that he came close to financial ruin while pursuing the historic case he eventually won as a Conscientious Objector (CO), after he was accused of dodging the draft to the US Army.

Ali thus became – and remains – the most high profile CO from the military draft in the history of the United States.

He obtained this status, under the law, when the courts ruled that his objection to military service on moral or religious grounds was legitimate.

What I find most noteworthy however, is that Ali used his famed doggedness, and adaptability, to survive financially, during the period of the ban.

For instance, during the years of his ban from boxing (for refusing to fight in the Vietnam war), he went across the U.S. giving speeches at various venues – including university campuses – on race, racism, inequality, non-violent civil disobedience etc.

In other words, he wisely used his celebrity status to attract invitations to speak his mind, and challenge the status quo.

We can all learn from that.

Aside from your core skills or expertise, can you think of any other abilities you can fall back on, in the event that you are temporarily unable to do what you do best?

Sometimes, this can prove to be “life saving”. For Ali, his speaking ability “saved” him!

Do you have a skill, or ability you can fall back on in the same way, should the need to do so arise?

If no, I suggest you start working at it NOW…: honing your public speaking skills might not be a bad idea…to start with…:-))

And that brings me to the message for this issue of my newsletter.

My study of Ali’s story, so far (there’s so much exciting stuff written about this great man!), has revealed potentially useful lessons I believe experts-who-speak can learn from Muhammad Ali’s public speaking exploits.

1. He Always Knew His Subject(s) Well Enough to Impress, & Be Remembered

Both in the ring and out of it, whenever he was speaking, Ali never had to pause to think or refer to notes. He knew what he needed to say, how to say it, and when to say it!

It’s why most of us remember his rhetoric so well.

We have no evidence of it, but Ali must have devoted some quality time to thinking up and planning his delivery.

His passion added fuel to his drive, because he truly believed what he was saying in the boxing ring (e.g. “I am the greatest”).

Outside the ring, Ali did his research and spoke truths based on facts. Here’s an example no one could argue with back then:

“I buy a lot of bullets, at least 3 bombers a year, and pay the salary of fifty thousand fighting men with the money they take from me after my fights”.

Wow, what a wonderfully VISUAL speaker. He used picture words right there. Ali wasn’t “just a boxer”. He was an educator!

In other words, there was MORE to him than just his boxing.

Google “Muhammad Ali videos” and watch him speak. The words basically poured out of him. He had a message to deliver on each topic – boxing, racism, equality, non-violence etc.

If you can be that way, no audience will forget what you tell them!

2. He Believed He Was Good Enough

This is one big grouse I have with formal schooling. Especially in one’s formative years.

There is this requirement for everyone to be like everyone else, to avoid being called a wet blanket or anti-social.

It can be good for controlling people – which benefits teachers and school administrators. But it can often kill the creative and spontaneous instincts of those exposed to it.

And this is why so many people leave formal school with a fear of being different.

The result is that even when they see things they know better about, that they can add useful value to, they shy away, for fear of being criticized or looking different.

Ali had no problems with being different.

Many others of his kind had already been drafted. He knew that.

And it goes without saying that some of them would have wondered what his problem was.

But that did not bother him. Instead, when it came to finding an alternative vocation, he settled on public speaking. And his self-belief enabled him do so well that he became sought after.

If you want to succeed in impacting audiences you address, BELIEVE you are good enough.

In fact, believe you are the best!

That’s what Ali did, and he kept saying it (while also working HARD towards it).

Below: A screen shot of Muhammad Ali’s quote that I posted on my wall yesterday, in which he said:

“To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are.” – Mohammed Ali

A screen shot of Muhammad Ali's quote that I posted on my wall yesterday, in which he said...'To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you're not, pretend you are.' - Mohammed Ali

3. He Was Not Afraid

The fear of public speaking is common among adults across the world (ever noticed kids rarely harbor such fears?). Like others before you, that fear can be overcome, with effort.

Experts out here need to stop hiding behind the excuse of being “too busy” to make out time to speak, or write. I do both, and it does not keep me from competently serving my wide variety of clients!

If you think you’re too busy, to add speaking/writing to what you do, what you need is better self-management. I can help you with that, email tayo at tksola dot com.

4. He Did Not Expect (or Wait For) Someone Else to Do it

Now, apart from fear, I’ve found some experts believe others should do the speaking. They actually think speaking should not concern them.

As a result, their interest in developing their public speaking skills is low.

Ali did not do that. He did not decide to leave the speaking to Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. Or to Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr.

He did not think or say “I’m a boxer, not a speaker”.

Ali was smart enough to understand that his public speaking could be used, simultaneously, as a powerful promotional strategy, and a subtle psychological weapon against his opponents.

He also knew his fame gave him a unique advantage to reach larger audiences, with his message about race and equality, better than the other activists.

In developed societies, one can find practicing professionals offering speaking services in their various fields.

Even within the same field, experts brand themselves by identifying a market niche they want to serve as speakers.

So in addition to providing their expert services, these savvy individuals also offer learning solutions (talks, seminars, workshops) and products (books, videos, audios etc) for a fee!

By so doing, they make themselves more complete solution providers.

They do not assume some other persons will do the speaking. Rather, they step up and offer themselves…and get paid sometimes MORE than they earn for doing what they are expert at!

More experts in this part of the world (Africa) CAN – and should – adopt a similar strategy.

I use it, and it helps me achieve multiple benefits.

Apart from getting paid to speak, I also get to market my products/services to many people at the same time – achieving name recognition/credibility!

Final Words: Ali Chose to Be a Public Speaker, & The World Was The Better for It!

Because Ali chose to speak, people got educated about history, race, equality, non-violent civil disobedience, human rights etc.

Not just that, we also got entertained with poems, and memorable one-liners such as those in the screen shot below:

Memorable one-liners from Mohammed Ali

Source: http://www.muhammad-ali-boxing.org.uk/witty-quotes-by-muhammad-ali.htm

That last quote – on the benefit of hindsight – was quite prophetic, wasn’t it? Today’s boxing is nothing compared to Ali’s era.

What a speaker he was: truly INSPIRED!

Many People Who Should Write Are NOT Writing – and YOU Are Probably One of Them (Read This to Learn Why) – Part 2 of 2

Who better to tell you what it feels like(or takes) to survive as a start-up entrepreneur, if not someone currently in the struggle – or recently out of it? To get an authentic update on the situation in Nigeria, would you ask someone who travels once-a-year to Lagos on official visits – or would you ask your Aunt who LIVES in Lagos, and visits New York on business every other month?

The foregoing is why I chose to write about my experiences early in my entrepreneurial career, and not wait till I got “up to the very top” before doing so.

I wanted people who needed it to get it raw and undiluted, as I like to say (I also wanted to use my writing to put on record the struggles I passed through, and had to learn to overcome). It’s more useful that way!

Incidentally we need not wait until we have succeeded in achieving the goal we pursue before we write for others to learn from us.

For instance a person who never made it to the finals of the Olympic 100m, could use THAT thought to motivate him/herself to draw from his/her “failures” and coach a younger athlete with potential to win the gold.

Taking this further, a person who has “failed” in a bid to achieve a valued life goal could, with a positive mental attitude, articulate a set of learning points about what caused him/her to fail.

And s/he could use them to teach others(one-on-one or through a book or article) about what to do to increase their chances of success.

You do NOT need to wait till you become the Managing Director before sharing useful learnings about how to pursue career advancement that you pick up along the way.

This is because while you are BUSY “climbing”, others coming after you will be in the process of taking the decision to START “climbing”. And compared to you, will be LESS experienced or knowledgeable about what to expect.

Many of them are likely to appreciate hearing from you, up front, some hints about what they will face during their journey. They would also be grateful to learn how you dealt with the challenges that cropped up, plus what you think THEY can do to make good progress.

In my case, I began sharing insights gained from my experiences as an entrepreneur, back in 2002, my startup year – through writing articles and books, and in daily interactions.

Today, I’ve gotten lots of failures and successes under my belt that enrich my writing and speaking even more. And I have HIGH QUALITY tips I can give, based on what I’ve discovered works, and does not work.

I implore you to begin documenting as much of your own experiences as possible. This way, you can also become equipped over time, to share useful learning with others, and make their journey less difficult.

No one person has the duty of teaching others about how to succeed in life.

Every one of us can teach what s/he knows to those who need to know it by writing about it. The best part is that once you’ve written it, you will not need to write it again. All those who want it will only then have to go to the bookstore or website where it is available and get their copy.

I Found Supporting Evidence That “You Need To Write”, In Dr. Spencer Johnson’s Book: “Who Moved My Cheese”!

Now, here’s something interesting…

I got even more convinced that writing as early as possible in my journey was the right thing to do, when I read the little book titled “Who moved my cheese?” written by Dr. Spencer Johnson.

What follows below are insights I gained from reading it, which I believe will benefit you as well…if you keep an open mind that is ;-))

The Book’s Parable About Hem & Haw(2 little people) As Well As Sniff & Scurry(2 Mice)

The book narrates an engaging parable about 4 characters – Sniff and Scurry (2 Mice) and also Hem and Haw (2 little people).

The parable illustrates the various ways different people react to unexpected changes/setbacks that occur in their lives on a daily basis.

The author’s parable admonishes us(readers) to learn to laugh at ourselves, and the mistakes we make in life, (so as to be able to learn from them and “move on” with our lives).

Dr. Johnson uses the analogy of “moving cheese” to illustrate how our circumstances/situations in life will inevitably change.

The moral of the parable is that we all need to be prepared for those changes when (not “if”) eventually they occur. If we’re prepared, and we respond quickly and intelligently to them (instead of protesting and complaining), we will often find that we end up being better off in the long run.

Dr. Johnson takes the reader through a series of scenarios in which the 4 characters employ various methods to deal with the unexpected changes.

The 2 little people – Hem and Haw – unlike the mice, had major problems getting over the setback – and moving on with their lives. Not surprising is it? A typical human reaction.

Hem in particular remained adamant that it was “unfair” for the cheese to have been moved. And he prevailed on Haw (who over time became more disposed to trying to find a way out of the fix they were in) to stay with him till things “returned to normal”. Or at least until “someone gave them an explanation” for moving their cheese.

How familiar does that sound. Don’t we humans have that habit…!!!

Remember! It’s a parable, and if you think back to our lives as humans, you should’t have much problems recalling those occasions when you’ve been a complainer.

Sometime in the past(or possibly even now) you may have been just like Hem – who never saw any good in a change that affected you(in your opinion) “negatively”.

An example of such a change is a lateral movement from your job to another seemingly less glamorous one in your company.

Lest I reproduce the entire book here, I will get straight to the point I wish to make. At a point, Haw decided that since the mice had taken off in search of another cheese almost immediately the initial cheese had moved, he would do the same.

So, he left Hem, (after trying without success to get him to go along), sitting and complaining, and began his search.

“Haw” Starts Writing To Share What He Learns BEFORE He achieves Success

As he journeyed, he made a lot of new discoveries, gaining new and fresh insights that excited him a great deal. In fact, he found the learnings he picked up while trying to find new cheese so profound that he decided to write each learning on the wall(in form of a short phrase).

This was so that anyone who was coming along after him, would benefit from the knowledge he had discovered.

Examples of the phrases he wrote are: “If you do not change, you can become extinct”; “When you move beyond your fear, you feel free”; and “Imagining myself enjoying new cheese even before I find it, leads me to it”.

I have chosen to adopt the method used by Haw, by writing to share my experiences so far, for the benefit of others who might wish to also go into entrepreneuring.

Even before he found new cheese, Haw began to share the little knowledge he was picking up along the way/during the journey. He felt (quite rightly too) that there was no point waiting till he got to the “end” of his journey, and found new cheese, before he shared the little he already knew.

This was because he recognized that he was experiencing useful – though sometimes painful – lessons that could benefit others tremendously, if they knew them before facing similar challenges.

Final Words: Writing About Your Experiences, To Help Others, Will Rarely Be Easy…But It Will Be Worth It

I personally believe that it takes strength of character – and tremendous self belief – to repeatedly make out time to do this. Writing like I propose here involves sharing (sometimes) painful lessons learnt (through writing, and/or speaking), in the pursuit of a challenging goal(s), especially while still working to achieve it(them).

Another lesson we can take away from Dr. Johnson’s book, is that we can each move our own cheese(become “masters of our fate”), instead of waiting for others to do it for us.

Over a decade ago, I chose to “move my own cheese” by leaving the comfort of what should have been a comfortable job in a corporate organization, to follow my longstanding vision of running my own businesses.

I also decided that I wanted to spend much of my time, sharing with others about how to do the things I have achieved in various areas of my past, present and future endeavours.

We need to share information/knowledge and discoveries about life, and how to live it better, with each other.

We need to do so regularly, and with plenty of excitement and passion. Our actions in this regard must be borne out of a genuine desire to enrich the lives of others, and help them get ahead like we are doing.

The result would be a society in which mutually beneficial exchange of information takes place among people in a way that enhances social development, making life more fulfilling for every member.

A society where this happens continually, and spontaneously, would be a very successful one. Many developed countries are already on the path toward attaining this futuristic state.

Developing countries which desire to achieve similar progress, will need to challenge MANY MORE of their members to write MORE OFTEN. This would at some point translate to giving (more) public speeches, conducting seminars, practical workshops, coaching programs.

All of which would be done based on authentic experiences they have had, that when shared could empower others to succeed in pursuit of their life goals.

Here’s the mistake none of us should make. Let us NOT wait for the government, or those in “power” to start this. Let each of us begin to do what s/he can from his/her own corner of influence.

And let us who are like minded and agreed on this course, selflessly work together to do more of it over time.

Sooner than later, those in government will take a cue from us and either get involved or organize similar efforts to consolidate ours!
