Why You Need to Become a Master of Adversity to Achieve Long Lasting Success

Are YOU experiencing discouraging delays, disappointments, or setbacks in life, and struggling to deal with them? If YES, this article can help you.

“Ona kan o gba oja” – a Yoruba saying – translates literally as: “several routes can be followed to the market”. It is often used in a figurative sense e.g. if an entrepreneur’s marketing strategy fails to work, it suggests exploring alternatives – instead of beating one’s head against the wall.

That mental attitude CAN help you turn things around and make the most of even the worst situations.

Incidentally, that is what has helped me succeed in virtually every area of endeavour I’ve ventured in life.

One example: A few years ago, while still based in Nigeria as an entrepreneur, certain “failures” made me begin toying with the idea of using Web Marketing to find 80% of my clients.

I was still doing offline marketing, to win projects with offline clients at the time (around 2010). But several unpleasant experiences had made me decide there had to be a better way to earn a living.

Apart from not getting paid as well as I wanted, I was periodically exposed to abuse and exploitation in various forms (some I’ve touched on in past articles e.g my article titled “One Major Reason Why People Avoid Entrepreneurship[True Story]“).

I wanted a way that would expose less frequently to the unpleasantness I was experiencing.

The idea occurred to me that I did not need to meet people face-to-face before they would buy from me – even in Nigeria/Africa.

By this time, many people had been reaching out to me via my articles marketing on Ezinearticles.com. A good number were from outside Nigeria and some as far as Europe, America and Asia.

However, the mindset I had at the time was one that kept me from believing I could get those foreigners to look beyond the issue of my being in Nigeria, and buy from me.

My past efforts, back in 2004 to 2006, had made me believe people were not willing to risk sending payment to Nigeria – due to the reputation given us by email scammers etc.

But my dissatisfaction with the results I got from working exclusively with offline clients DROVE me to try harder.

I eventually gained enough insights/experiences about how to do it – though it would take time.

So I began making more deliberate changes to my website content offers towards “wooing” potential clients from ANY part of the world with the QUALITY of useful content I offered.

The main purpose was to build my mailing list, which I then planned to “mine” for sales – with periodic offers.

Today, I can tell you that plan has worked WAY beyond what I imagined possible.

Indeed it continues to work. I now have a growing number of clients within and outside Nigeria/Africa who have NEVER met me in the flesh.

Yet, these people who have sent me payments for many of my products, and services, remain on good terms with me till today.

And more are in the process of joining them as I type this e.g. via my new 2-in-1 poultry farm business plans offer and others.

When I first began trying to use web marketing the way I do today, people told me nobody would buy from me without meeting me in person.

Some even subtly insinuated that I was a comedian for thinking anyone would send money to buy my so called “Excel software” for 5 to 6 figures.

Well, they ALL know now that they were wrong!

It’s all on record that total strangers – Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike send me as much as N75K to purchase my apps (e.g. the Monthly Poultry Farm Manager) – without meeting me.

But it takes diligence, and patience to use web marketing to attract these kinds of buyers from this part of the world i.e. Africa.

[NB: To build custom Excel apps from scratch, I’ve had clients pay from over N50k to as much as 5 times more – depending on the project scope etc.]

Being competent at what you do matters little with regard to how well you will be able to “market” it online. You will have to LEARN a new set of skills to do the latter effectively.

When I was doing it, I had no one. I had to believe alone that it was possible to use the web to sell my unconventional products and services.

And I had to do that, because I had lost money doing the direct marketing stuff. So I had more or less no viable options beyond that…

For instance, I once placed an advert in Guardian newspaper, for a seminar in Lagos, then produced lots of flyers and handouts, and went sharing them all over the place.

The venue I paid for was a plaza (La Monarch) at Opebi, in the Ikeja area of Lagos-Nigeria.

That day, NOT ONE SOUL turned up, despite several enquiries, and even people who showed interest in my flyers.

Would you believe that I still went ahead and created a VIDEO of myself talking about that disaster?

In fact I later regaled audiences I got paid to speak to (e.g. 16 management trainees at the Tantalizers Fast Food Restaurant chain’s Festac Headquarters), about how to use such a setback as a stepping stone!

Not only did it get people to laugh, they also saw that I refused to let ANYTHING get me down – instead used it to challenge myself to find another way to stop it from being a total failure.

Are YOU experiencing discouraging delays, disappointments, or setbacks and struggling to deal with them, as you pursue your goal(s)?

If yes, let me tell you that what you are experiencing is NO BIG DEAL.

And do you know what? You can still succeed, if you adopt the mindset implied in the Yoruba saying earlier mentioned.

There are many routes you can follow to achieve that goal(s) you set for yourself.

The problem is you may NOT be seeing the other possible ways to go about it right now, because you have not given it the required thought.

If you do the needed thinking diligently, you are likely to discover that you only need to make slight modifications and inclusions to your strategy. Once you do that, new possibilities will become even more apparent to you – and then you’d simply need to take ACTION!

Like Burt Dubin says – “You’ve got to roll with the punches that life throws at you”.

If one strategy does not work, the way you first tried it, and then re-try in a different way, for the same or a different audience.

Then PUT IT BACK out there in the marketing space (making sure it’s the RIGHT one) and PUSH it in your target audience members’ faces with DOUBLE determination!

Now that is the spirit that sets REAL entrepreneurs apart from the “wannabes”!

Never let yourself get too easily upset when things go wrong. It’s NOT a good way to be if you want to succeed as an entrepreneur.

Big or small – all entrepreneurs are people who never let setbacks keep them down.

In fact WE thrive on it!

The truth is that those delays, disappointments and setbacks are just a taste of what is still to come: There will be many more, in different forms. How you respond to them is what matters.

Ignore what ANYONE – be they close to you or total strangers – may say or do, during this period of your struggles!

If they laugh, laugh with them.

If that’s too hard for you to do, calmly take a walk to get some fresh air and THINK up new ideas you can use.

No matter how bad you think it all looks RIGHT NOW, if you adopt the right mindset, YOU can still come away with a major win!

But, it may not be the way YOU planned to win…which is why OUR Creator is so great :-))

You see, while we’re looking east, He may have plans of success coming at us from the West!

I hope you see my point.

We don’t need to worry about what he’s cooking up for us. Instead, we just need to KEEP doing our own bit with diligence and integrity.

Just continue to take firm steps forward towards the goals we passionately desire, with faith and determination.

That’s what we need to do to play our part in the relationship we have with him. Once we do that, he will do the rest.

What I just said above is based on more than 2 decades of my personal experiences achieving the goals I set my heart on, by applying “Absolute & Unquestioning Faith”.

Every human being is capable of doing that. And if you do it with persistence, you WILL connect successfully with your creator, and He will help you OVERCOME any visitations of adversity!

Why More People Prefer Teaching Others, to Doing What They Teach

What I discuss in today’s article – in my experience based opinion – afflicts adults in both paid and self-employment – especially the well schooled ones. They typically possess great knowledge, and competence, but often lack the know-how to MONETIZE what they know/can do.

The seeds for that problem are however sown in them long before they arrive adulthood.

Their teachers, in conventional schooling systems drill them relentlessly on the need to focus on schooling to the near exclusion of virtually everything else. They get told to “wait” until they “graduate” and get their certificates, diplomas etc.

The problem is even those telling them to wait, and drilling them on subjects being taught, do not know better themselves.

In this regard I recall something Robert Kiyosaki said in one of his books that I read several years ago.

He explained that we need to bring people from the real world who know what they are talking about, to teach in our schools. This is the only way to successfully use formal schooling to prepare people to succeed in the real world.

But this problem of ineffective teaching does not end with schools: Even vocational outfits/trainers are making the same mistakes these days.

This is actually the main reason I’m writing on this theme today.

We have all sorts of adult-learning or coaching events happening all around us these days. From people learning PC and Internet related skills to those learning to make handicrafts (like carvings) and household consumables (like soap, disinfectant, air freshener etc).

Those teaching these adults I have noticed keep using the same approach used by the school teachers

In other words, they focus almost exclusively on teaching the subject, and rarely give useful attention to showing learners how to go into the real world and successfully apply what they learn.

Indeed, what I have even noticed, which concerns me the more, is that many of the so called vocational trainers seem to make MORE of their income from TEACHING others to do it, that they do from actually DOING IT.

The worst part is that for some strange reasons, those who learn from them rarely take notice. And the few who do are given the lame argument by the “teachers” that “we love helping others”…even when it is glaring that THEY have yet to NOT need help themselves!.

I’ll give 3 examples:

1. Catfish Farmer Who Earns Bulk of His Income Running Teaching Others

The guy gets a plot of land and builds a few ponds, then sets up an operation that enables him produce fish at different stages of growth e.g from fingerlings, to juvenile and ultimately table sized catfish.

Once he succeeds in making some amount of sales from a few batches, he begins offering training services to aspiring start-ups. As part of the training, he will create videos, manuals or handbooks, and possibly offer pond construction etc services.

As more people attend his programmes, he stops (or drastically cuts down) commercial production – to begin using the farm more for demonstration.

For instance, if a training event is due on Saturday, he would – few days before – prepare needed brood stocks for use in demonstrating spawning (production of fertilized eggs for hatching) to the audience.

After that, the resulting fingerlings would be sold to interested attendees or past attendees of his training.

In essence, most times he would be doing  little or no selling of his own products, except what the captive audience of learners buys from him. The rest of his income would come from doing training and more training.

2. Forex Trader Who Earns Bulk of His Income Teaching Others

The same scenario plays out with most of those offering  Forex Training. Rarely will you find one who has already made it big doing it himself. Instead, even the person who just began trading several weeks ago, will readily offer to train you for a fee, if you show the slightest interest.

I saw enough of this over several years, while I was still based in Nigeria.

My exposure made it easy for me to see through what most of them were doing. So, none of them wasted much time on me – they quickly got the message that I simply would not bite.

But the uninitiated kept biting, and after paying hefty sums, based on the promise of what the magical automatic trading robot would earn for them, they were also caught in the web of deceit. And most would eventually revert to trying to pull the same stunt on others.

As a result, what you tend to see, if you look carefully enough is A WHOLE LOT of teachers, who only just stopped being students in forex trading seminars.

Very few had any proof of major earning success to show!

3. Maker of Disinfectants, Soaps etc Who Earns Bulk of His Income Teaching Others

I consider this the worst. Almost everywhere one turns now, graduates of these “training events” can be seen selling (or should I say trying to sell), their products.

Unfortunately, they are all producing basically the same range/type of products, using the same methods (which are far from world class) .

Few if any are applying their own creativity to the production process they’ve learnt.

As a result, the buyers are having a field day down pricing their products, and basically paying them peanuts.

Margins are close to being microscopic for some of them as a result!

In most cases, those raking the big bucks home seem to be the persons who preoccupy themselves with teaching others.

The reason why this is happening is that both teachers and learners do NOT know how to monetize what they know PROFITABLY.

I keep hammering on the need to make this distinction in my articles on entrepreneurship.

You CAN make money without making profits. It happens all the time – but it’s rarely funny. People who do that barely manage to break even. They are often able to keep going, but very rarely make enough to have anything left over.

Like I said earlier, it happens both in paid employment as well as self-employment.

For instance, when discussing your pay with a new employer the mentality of taking what you are given, developed via the drilling from your schooling, makes you accept to be underpaid.

I agree that sometimes you may have to take up a job as offered, to at least get your foot in the door.

However, what I have learnt is that by diligently developing yourself to deliver superlative workplace performances, you can make the employer gladly give you BIGGER pay, again and again.

Or you can creatively negotiate conditions that will earn you MORE pay for delivering superior results!

The mistake most people make is to simply focus on working and working and working on their salary jobs,. That’s why they end up aging fast, and not having much to show for it in terms of what they get paid.

Now, for those persons outside salary jobs, I offer a similar message – but from a different perspective:

I’m talking here to those who know how to do “something”, but choose to make money by teaching IT, instead of doing IT.

I am also talking to those who learnt from those who TEACH how to do “something”, and are now struggling to make enough money DOING IT.

Both groups lack the same thing:

By this I mean they lack the know-how to successfully package, price, promote, and present their different products to the RIGHT buyers that will pay them enough to earn decent profits.

It’s the same mental attitude that prevents those in paid employment from THINKING up ways to make those they serve VALUE them enough to pay MORE, that’s hold these  groups back.

Another good example of where this happens is FREELANCE WRITING.

I need not give examples. Just think about it, and you’ll agree with me. It’s why many writers accept poor pay to write for exploitative clients in job forums!

Simply put they do NOT know how to achieve Power Positioning (PP).

PP enables you achieve what is called Top Of Mind Awareness (TOMA) with those most likely to need what you offers.

Once that happens, you stand a much greater chance of not only SUCCESSFULLY requesting profitable payment from them, BUT also having them choose to go for YOU, over others – including those who offer lower prices.

You can sell what you create (be it product or service) for MUCH MORE than you currently do.

In paid employment, you can successfully negotiate conditions that will make your employer positively disposed to paying you more, for adding superior value to the company.

Creating Your OWN Original Content is Definitely NOT Beyond YOU (Practical Ideas YOU Can Use)!

In a 2013 article (click here) I said: “The Fast-Food” Mentality Does Not Work in Business Related Writing”. That’s especially true online. This article contains MY near decade long experience based advice for website owners who may be struggling to find new, useful and original content to publish on their sites.

Even if 99.9% of other websites copy and paste other people’s content on their website, it is no justification for YOU to join them in doing it!

YOU were given a fully functional brain by God. Otherwise, you could not venture into an activity like website news “reporting” as a BUSINESS!

For heavens sake, when you’re publishing based on a BBC News report, let’s know it’s a BBC News report. Don’t borrow ALL the wordings from BBC and then say YOU are telling us a BREAKING NEWS STORY!

Incidentally, you can DEVELOP your God-given brain to its FULL potential, to come up with your own ORIGINAL wording for the same bit of news.

That way, when you publish on YOUR website, no one can accuse you of “copying and pasting”.(NB: Even then, you’re still better off stating your source!! )

The problem is our quick-fix culture today makes too many people, TOO much in a hurry to get results. So, they are often unwilling to spare the time to do the needed.

When you paraphrase another person’s original words/thoughts, if you did NOT originally CONCEIVE those “ideas” as your OWN brainchild, you MUST give due ATTRIBUTION: SAY SO e.g. “this was originally written or said by XYZ and I found it so compelling that I had to share it here on my website”.

Also an element of GREED is at play here, in the sense some people want to enjoy PRESTIGE and RECOGNITION from their fans and followers by passing off someone else’s “content” they gain privileged access to, as theirs!

It’s so bad now that many do not even know where/when to stop…

For instance, in another article I wrote 2013, titled “Young People Must Be Taught To Be Original! (click to read)!“, I narrated how I discovered a young blogger in Nigeria’s Anambra state using a “stolen and viciously manipulated” version of my popular Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas article titled “Producing Good Catfish is Important, But Finding Good Buyers Is Imperative” (click to read).

For instance, in another article I wrote 2013 (click here), titled 'Young People Must Be Taught To Be Original! (click to read)!', I narrated how I discovered a young blogger in Nigeria's Anambra state using a 'stolen and viciously manipulated' version of my popular Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas article titled 'Producing Good Catfish is Important, But Finding Good Buyers Is Imperative' (click to read).

Not only did he copy and paste it, without including my by-line on his blog, would you believe he also went as far as REPLACING my phone number with his, at the end, where I asked the reader to call me for help in making use of the ideas in my article???

I was so livid that I called him from where I was in a Cotonou cyber cafe and gave him a 24 hour ultimatum to remove the article. And I warned him that if he did not, I would lodge a complaint with regulatory bodies on the web – which would get his host to shut down his site.

The truth, as I’ve said in past articles is that in certain climes (e.g Nigeria), there is a VERY severe disregard for intellectual property protection […in case you did not know it, I AM a full blooded 44 year old Nigerian, born and raised there].

Even religious leaders “borrow” other people’s content, and pass it off as theirs for use in preaching to their followers. I KNOW this because I have worked closely with some who did this right before my very eyes!

In order to protect myself (I’ve had many instances in which I had to chase down content thieves online in other parts of the world), about a year ago, I began using the Content Protection service offered by http://www.dmca.com/ on my blog.

Another thing I did to protect myself – from early on – was to DELIBERATELY seek to saturate the web with my articles via a syndication service like Ezinearticles.com

That way, if anyone tried to use my work, the search engines would be more likely to readily link the words with my name – since getting it accepted from me at Ezinearticles.com implied I had been verified to be the original author.

If you own a website, and you know you publish 100% original content, you may wish to do the same things I did.

1. Consider using the FREE version of the http://www.dmca.com/ service.

2. Also try doing some article marketing via Ezinearticles.com

3. Then, if you are willing to challenge yourself, try and be a bit more prolific in your writing. Be sure you write useful, good quality content though – NOT fluff!

4. Use Social Media channels to republish/propagate your content

The above will over time make the search engines, and people who come in contact with your work, recognize you, as the OWNER of your words – and TRUST you. Once that happens,. you should be reasonably safe from content thieves.

Even if a dispute come up, you WILL have a trail of evidence (in form of your relentlessly created volume of past writing/content) to present as proof that you have NO NEED to steal other people’s stuff!

It’s worked fairly well for me so far, which is why I READILY tell others that no website on EARTH can lay claim to ANY of the content on my websites!

On a final note, some funny characters have argued to my hearing, that when people choose to copy from you, it’s a form of flattery.

My answer has always been that when flattery HURTS me, I cannot see it as that (i.e flattery) anymore.

People who pass off my work as theirs DENY me the recognition and reward due to me as the OWNER and ORIGINATOR of that content.

It is certainly NOT something for me to smile about!

That’s why I agree with Debra Gould, who wrote the EXCELLENT article titled “Copying Web Content Isn’t Flattery – It’s Plagiarism(click to read)!”

PS: In case you wonder, here’s what qualifies me to speak competently on THIS issue!

I write a new article daily – from Monday to Saturday (sometimes Sunday) on this blog – and ONE of my key reasons (which I initially chose NOT to announce) was to PROVE to any doubters that I AM the original author of whatever appears on my blog.

Today, a lot of my content is widely syndicated online.

On this website – www.tayosolagbade.com – I have over 1,000 articles.

And each day that passes, at least ONE new article (or my weekly newsletter), or a new PDF report, or a Power Point Slide show, or You tube Video joins them.

One of my reasons for doing this is that years ago, I got emails asking “Are you really the one who writes that volume of stuff?”

That annoyed me a lot.

In reality, I’ve found that people who express such doubts often lack the Emotional Intelligence to stick to their purpose with integrity – especially if they feel they cannot see an immediate reward.

And since they can’t they find it hard to believe any other person can!

What they did not know was that all my life I had been succeeding by excelling in areas where few ventured to dare.

As an employee, over a 7 year period in Guinness Nigeria, I excelled using my self-taught spreadsheet programming skills to single handedly build spreadsheet software that replaced manual data recording and report generation processes in different departments I worked.

No one else could do what I did, and I gained rapid recognition across the company for it – including the IT department. Rapid career advancement opportunities resulted in the process.

As an online entrepreneur, I AM doing the same thing…e.g by building and selling custom MS Excel-VB Driven software, writing creative content for use by clients, on and off the web etc.

Not only do I create new and original content in various channels, I also happen to create stuff that gets me the positive attention and interest of PAYING clients within and outside Africa.

Plus, my work has also earned me “recognition” and acknowledgement from established experts online.

Achieving the above does NOT come easily.

It takes hard work and diligence to relentlessly create new and useful content to publish on such a regular basis.

I spend hundreds of hours THINKING up new ideas, then writing, and building new content based on them to promote my products and services!

It may interest you to know that over 80% of my buyers, find me online, on their own, without having ever heard from, or about me before. And it is my WRITTEN content which they encounter online – often via search engines – that brings them to me!

Let me add here that I have to do my own content creation, while STILL delivering similar material to my clients!

That’s not a vocation for the faint hearted – or lazy…OR intellectually indolent…!

But because I’ve been doing it for so long, and it is My PASSION, I get it done quite well, quickly – seemingly effortlessly.

So much so that I still find plenty of time to spend with my kids – and share valuable REAL LIFE skills with them (see example below)

It is the above – evidence of which is available on THIS BLOG and my other websites – that makes me VERY competent to comment on this pandemic of Content Abuse that plagues us in Nigeria.

I hope those concerned will have the dignity and self-respect to mend their ways from today!

Final Words: Here’s why ANYONE guilty of content abuse in any form should mend their ways…

You have been made in the IMAGE and LIKENESS of the Creator Himself.

Therefore a SMALL task like creating your OWN original content is definitely NOT beyond YOU!

Start Something You Never Need to Retire From (Hint: Why We All Need to Emulate Muhammad Ali – the BOXER, and the MAN!)

“When you saw me in the boxing ring fighting, it wasn’t just so I could beat my opponent. My fighting had a purpose. I had to be successful in order to get people to listen to the things I had to say.” – MUHAMMAD ALI, The Soul of a Butterfly

I recently watched a video – click here to watch now – of Muhammad Ali (at age 35) speaking to a large audience (comprising adults and kids). A young boy asked him “What will you do when you retire?” Ali’s answer proved his boxing genius was matched by an acute sense of “life purpose”.

Basically, Ali told the young mane and the listening audience how he’d emerged from deep reflection to realize that after he retired from boxing, the best way to spend his time would be helping others.

Now, he did not just state it simply in a few words. Ali – always a man who practiced what he preached – took the audience on what I would call an intellectual journey of self-discovery. Especially as it relates to finding one’s purpose in line with the creator’s will.

In order to prepare their minds, Ali started by asking if there were people in the audience who believed in God. Then he asked to see the hands of any who did NOT believe there was a God. In both cases there were hands raised.

To one of those closest to him amongst the latter group, Ali then used the analogy of how the different parts of the world came into existence.

But before that he took asked if man made objects we use daily – like cups etc – could have made themselves. The answer was no.

Following upon that, he then asked if those who claimed not to believe in God could explain how such well planned collection of parts that make up the earth came into being.

Ali went on to conclude that the amazing complexity of the earth itself provided ample proof that a superior and supreme form on intelligence, well above ours, was at work.

So, for him, he said that was why he was convinced of God’s existence.

And as a result, he knew there had to be a purpose for which God had made him. Ali added that if Hell – where those who fail to do God’s will are said to be sent – existed, he would rather work to NOT go there after he dies.

In order to achieve that goal of making heaven, Ali said he had thought of the active years in his life outside those spent sleeping etc – and decided he would use his fame and success to help others e.g. by partnering with NGOs and other support groups.

AND THAT, he said was what he would do after he retired from boxing.

What Amazing Foresight from a Man of Real Vision!

Today, everybody knows that Ali has kept his word with regard to what he said on that day. Several decades ago as a young man.

And his fame has not waned up till now. Neither has the respect and admiration AND love he enjoys from people across the world diminished. This is one man with the rare ability to make people forget their differences. The Muhammad Ali Centre continues to carry on the Ali legacy of helping those who need it.

And Ali remains a central figure – even now in his old age, and despite the health challenge he has had to deal with.

His words spoken over the past decades that get shared on the wall of his Facebook page continue to inspire millions across the world. I, for one continue to draw MASSIVE inspiration from this man’s words that I read as a fan on his page.

Each of Us Needs to Emulate Ali – By Choosing to Start Something We Won’t Need to Retire From

Ali did that. He looked beyond his vocation, to carve out a vision – and a mission from the vision.

He had a message for the world, and he was determined to share that message. But he knew the world would not easily pay attention to a person who was not NOTEWORTHY. So, he let that need to make them LISTEN to him drive his boxing efforts.

That led him to explore all sorts of creative ways to draw attention to himself while boxing.

For example, Ali’s habit of using rhyming poems to communicate – especially to opponents – was unique. Till date, no other boxer has succeeded in doing what he did so well.

As a result, even when he was not boxing, he remained in demand.

People wanted not just to SEE him. They also wanted to hear him speak. To know what he thought about issues affecting them. Even to know what his stand was.

Evidence that Ali’s thinking was as described above can be found in material he shares from his archives even today.

For instance, not long ago, he shared a photo of himself, with a quote that helped me better understand why he chose to adopt such a boldly vocal approach to his own brand of boxing.

Each of us can do what Ali did i.e Use your VISION for the future, to drive yourself to EXCEL at what you do NOW!

No matter what it is. Think of how you can link what you succeed at today, to what you can do well into your later years that can make the lives of others better.

That desire to achieve your long term vision will help you do what it takes to excel in your more immediate pursuits.

Then later on, you will find that the platform of success you arrive on in future, will make it easy to carry on with your bigger vision/mission right into your old age.

That’s why Ali’s impact continues to be felt even today – LONG after he retired from boxing. Each one of us can make our impact felt the same way too – if we emulate the great Muhammad Ali!

No. 162: You Need Childish Enthusiasm to Achieve Uncommon Success

I am VERY childishly excitable and I SHOW IT. Not all my clients understand IT, but most like IT, because (IF I take on their project) IT makes me DELIVER what I promise them.

Unlike Most “Mature & Enlightened” Adults (Whatever That Means), I Don’t Act “Cool, Calm and Collected” When I’m EXCITED!

Many “schooled” adults often argue that one must act reserved to command respect.

Well, that’s never worked for me. Instead my willingness to “let myself go” has helped repeatedly record superlative performances in EVERY area of endeavour I have ventured in life.

And believe me, they are many.

Luckily for me, this has always come naturally.

Unfortunately for many I come across however, if they ever had such instincts in them (which I argue they were actually born with as children), society made them GROW out of it, to “qualify” to be called “mature adults” (again; whatever THAT means!)

I’m not asking you to go goofing around in your suit and tie – although I would argue that one should do a bit of that every now and then :-))

Highly successful people like Richard Branson, who alternately does VERY cool, and sometime goofy stuff, have shown that it helps to connect to your target audience in ways that build trust and credibility much faster.

To this end, I am actually planning a series of my own special publicity stunts to be implemented and shared via social media over the next few months.

Let me share with you a massive truth I discovered over 2 decades ago from applying my above mentioned instincts to relentlessly succeed at school, at work, and in life.

I AM Living Proof That Indulging In “Childlike Imagination and Wonder” Yields Superior Performance

What’s more my extensive studies done DEEP into the successes of many well known figures that caught my interest have repeatedly confirmed that many of them also share my sentiments.

A few quotes I’ve inserted in this article offer examples, but many more abound.

As an expert in your field, nurturing and preserving this mindset of childish enthusiasm and awe towards life, and its LIVING, can prove CRUCIAL to “dusting” any competition you have.

Like I already mentioned above, it is what has helped me excel very many times in various – often unrelated – vocations.

Many of the stories I’ve told on this blog – including my current string of Location Independent Multipreneuring based successes (since I relocated from Nigeria to Benin Republic), – offer verifiable proof.

In case you are a client or have been one in the past, what I say here should (hopefully) help you understand why I always seemed as excited – sometimes MORE! – than even you were about the project YOU hired ME to do for you!

Because I choose to “remain childish” in the way I embrace new discoveries, and new opportunities and new learning, I excel!

That basically sums it up really.

Each time I connect with a client (old or new), I always check to see if a proposed project is one that EXCITES me.

If I do not get a feeling of anticipation, or surge of adrenaline just contemplating it, the hindsight of past experiences often warn me that I may not do well in it.

On the occasions that I have “forced” myself to take on such jobs, I struggled to finish them to MY satisfaction.

Ironically, the  clients expressed satisfaction with the finished work – yet I felt I had not done “enough”!

And that feeling came from knowing that I’d not been on “fire” in doing it i.e that I could have a WHOLE lot more (You see, I have a principle I adhere to, of “under-promising” to “over-deliver” – to each client).

Today, I try hard to avoid taking on such jobs when clients request my services.

Generally, I avoid telling such a client “I’m too busy”. It’s not polite, and can offend.

Instead, if it’s an old client that I hesitate to simply walk away from, I would subtly show my reservation by “delaying” in giving a response to the question of “how much will it cost?

Usually I simply say…”Hmm, let me think about it and get back to you”. Then I generally “forget”. Sometimes s/he may ask again.

If it happens I have another project in hand from the same client, I could tactfully try to redirect his/her attention to an aspect, as an excuse.

If s/he persists, I give him/her a “fee” on the HIGH end that I know is likely to make him/her balk. This last tactic often works – and s/he may eventually choose to find someone else…and I of course NEVER ask about it afterwards!!

By freeing yourself from doing work that does NOT excite you, it will only be a matter of time before clients offering projects YOU consider exciting – with GREAT pay on top of it – begin to seek you out.

And when that happens, don’t lock up your “childlike imagination”!

They key to “wowing” those clients will be unleashing it.

Plunge into the project with a determination to re-discover even those things you (think you) already know.

In choosing a niche subject to speak about in your industry, I recommend you let follow your – childlike – intuition/instincts.

How you feel about each topic or subject, should inform your choice.

Final Words: Wherever You Find Yourself Feeling “Awe & Wonder” At Possibilities to be Had in Any Area, Be “Childish” Enough to EXPLORE Them Till You’re S-a-t-i-a-t-e-d!

It could take time before you find a speaking “topic” worth developing for your target niche as an expert-who-speaks.

Sometimes you may need to look closer, dig deeper, and/or even polish or refine what you find.

But eventually, the subject or theme you make your flagship offering should be the one you find most exciting.

Your chosen subject should be the one you feel most UN-inhibited thinking, reading and speaking about.

In other words, the one for which you feel the greatest – shameless – ENTHUSIASM. i.e. that which you are most comfortable responding to questions about – and which comes most naturally to you.

Quite often, going about using the above described approach will lead you to establish yourself as an authority in less time than others who do what you do.

And you would do it with much less effort too!

Now, since meeting planners and audiences always want someone with proven competence, that authority status will make YOUR speaking service offer MORE compelling than whatever most others offer.

The above is why this approach helps those who adopt it to EXCEL:

If you put it to diligent use, it will help YOU EXCEL too!

Every Time You Achieve Success, Find Out Why, So That You Can Reproduce It.

I often groan when I hear a celebrity answer the question about the secret of his/her success by saying something like “Na God O!” (i.e. “It’s God’s handiwork!”).  You see, I also succeed with God’s help. BUT, I KNOW there’s more to success achievement than saying “Na God O!” suggests!

And this is where successful people in developed societies often differ from us.

Read an interview with them, and you’ll come away with practical ideas – sometimes step by step instructions – of how to proceed in trying to replicate the success they are celebrated for.

That is why they are able to write books that offer actionable advice on how to succeed the way they have. It is why they are able to demystify their own success achievement for those following them to learn from, and improve upon.

In our societies across Africa too many successful people rarely offer tangible insights into what made them succeed. But to be fair, sometimes they actually do not know – or have not given it enough thought to articulate it into any useful form.

The truth is NOT all those who say they worship God are able to produce performances that will make them become successful/celebrated personalities!

And that is because there are so many specific actions/steps that successful persons take that those NOT as successful do not take as frequently and/or as diligently.

When The Right Questions Are Asked, More Useful Answers Emerge

I believe that many of the interviewed authentic celebrities I refer to would have loved to give more insight into HOW and WHAT made them succeed, if the right kinds of “probing” questions had been asked of them.

Unfortunately, often times their interviewers are not alert to the need to do this for the enhanced benefit of their viewing/listening audiences.

Anyone who has read transcripts of the popular “Conversations With Millionaires” series will understand what I mean.

I refer to the ability of certain interviewers to ask “probing” questions that get answers OUT OF successful persons, IN A WAY that gives listeners more accurate insight into HOW and WHY the celebrities succeeded.

“Clearer Answers” which would then guide those aspiring to follow the same, proven path, even if with modifications or adjustments.

As they say, “Success leaves a trail…”

Our celebrities need to be “helped” to “remember” what they did (& how), in the manner I propose above.

This is because many of them never really sat down (after having succeeded) to THINK about what they actually did to get the results they wanted – and for which they subsequently became celebrated.

In Africa, We Do Not Currently Investigate & Document Achieved Success ENOUGH

This is a fact.

In our society, if we want success to happen for MORE people, MORE frequently, we need to establish and rigorously maintain systems to INVESTIGATE and DOCUMENT what makes celebrated members of society succeed.

This is so that others who aspire can use the information recorded to achieve similar or greater successes – FASTER and with LESS EFFORT.

One over riding benefit is that society will as a result develop faster, contributing to a better world.

The problem is that in our society, we are too much of “DOERS” – and LESS of thinkers!

Each person is so self focused that s/he hardly ever gives a thought to how s/he can make the journey shorter, and less difficult for those who follow.

Tell him/her to GO for a particular goal, and s/he will.

But most often it will be done in a haphazard manner, and with little or no effort to ANALYSE experiences and document lessons learned for future reference/guidance.

The Result of Doing So Much Without Thinking Enough is: Poor Repeatability & Reproducibility Of Achieved Successes

Following from the above, when things fall in place, s/he takes it in his/her stride without sparing a thought for HOW to make those same things fall in place like THAT again in future – repeatedly.

A direct consequence of that inadvertent oversight, is that when things eventually go WRONG, s/he once again has to adopt the trial and error approach used in the past, until, if s/he is lucky, ANOTHER break through occurs.

For many who use this haphazard approach, it possibly works often. However, compared to the alternative proposed in this article, it can be quite costly in terms of time, effort, and even money.

Summary: Below I list three (3) compelling reasons to AVOID using such a haphazard approach:

1. The stress/strain that will arise from recovering from the problems occasioned by the use of a trial and error approach will wear you down – making the “journey to success” more PAINFUL than it should be.

2. You will be inefficient – because it takes you LONGER and costs you MORE time, effort, resources etc, to get the same results.

3. You won’t improve significantly – meaning you may never become good enough to beat your own “Personal Best”. Look at it this way: Only a sprinter who measures and knows her best 100 metres time is 9.99 seconds can AIM to run faster and therefore cross the line at LESS than that time. To achieve that goal, she will then have to CHECK what she can do better or differently to INCREASE her running speed, then TRY it out, UNTIL she succeeds.

The above potentially negative outcome of failing to investigate and understand why you succeed, is that you will LACK the means to EXPAND or GROW.

This could end up giving critics and/or cynics an opportunity to “question” your success.

Evidence to confirm that what I have said in this article is true, can be readily found when one looks at the number of World Champion Long Distance runners that have come out of an African country like Kenya.

Almost yearly, that country produces World Class athletes who gain quick prominence in international circles.

This happens because Kenya has a SYSTEM in place that enables it to REPEAT and REPRODUCE its athletic successes. I have listened to interviews conducted with athletes from that country, and the answers they gave to questions asked confirm this.

Final Words: Check Yourself – Do You Know How to Reproduce Your Success?

If you were to look at yourself, your organisation, your society or your country from a similar perspective, is it possible that there are areas where the success(es) achieved in the past now appear to have been just a “flash(es) in the pan”?

IF YES, maybe it’s time you (and/or others concerned), sat down to INVESTIGATE and DOCUMENT why you succeeded back then, so that you can REPRODUCE it NOW and into the future.

Deciding How Much Your Startup Poultry Farm Needs (Hint: Should Not Depend on How Rich Your Prospective Investor Is!)

What should influence your decision about how much funds to ask for in your start-up poultry layer farm business plan? Does the size of your prospective investors pockets need to be a factor in deciding what scale you start your enterprise at?

This article features excerpts from suggestions I emailed to a recent client on this theme.

It’s not just the money that concerns me, but also the experience and competence you will need “in-house” to handle the flock size to PROFITS (which is what really matters in the end!).

For instance, consider a business plan in which the poultry house will take up to 2,500 birds at P.O.L (i.e. Point Of Lay).

The question is would you be able to cope with that large a flock size in your 1st year and given your experience level (i.e. if you’ve not done it before)?

Poultry farming can be a delicate enterprise when one is still in a learning phase.

If you’re still holding down a 9 to 5 job – like more people venturing into it these days – it means you’ll have to do it part time.

You may not find it easy to to cope with day to day running for the first 15 month cycle, given that you’re still not fully free, plus you’ll be depending on a 3rd party.

My point is: the projections in a business plan are to serve as a guide. What happens on the farm may not be as straight forward.

This is why we have people who launch their poultry farms with no business plans, and they do well, while some others don’t.

The difference is often in the daily hands on management.

Handling 2,000 laying birds to make profits takes a lot more than handling 1,000.

The way I see it, you would be better off trying out for say 500 birds in one scenario and 1,000 birds in the other.

With each, you can tell prospective investors that you plan to scale up by 50% in the 2nd year.

This would be more realistic, given your experience.

Starting conservatively will often be a wise thing to do – even if you have the funds to start with twice as much

Incidentally, several of the clients I have now requesting my software told me they started with 500 to 1,000, and are now “expanding” after the 1st or 2nd year with those numbers.

Hence their need to formulate their own feed (using my ration formulator) and/or also track and trend the birds performance (using my poultry farm manager)

As your flock size increases in year 2 or 3, cost of feeding will need finer control to boost profit margins, hence you would aim to buy less commercial feed and make more of your own formulated feed at feed mills.

Doing the above will require closer hands on management that I anticipate you may need time to master from your 1st year, given that it’s your first outing.

Hopefully you see what I mean.

The concern I have is to get you to understand why your decision of scope or scale to startup should NOT be informed by how big the pockets of your prospective investor are.

Instead you should dwell on how good your chances of making a success of the venture are!

Incidentally, a smart thinking investor with integrity (e.g. one who worked hard, smart and honestly to make his money) is likely to appreciate the need to start conservatively, as being proposed here, for the first year, so you gain valuable know how and experience to scale up more profitably in the 2nd year.

This is livestock rearing my brother – profitable, but potentially risky as well!

Here’s a true story to help you put this in perspective:

A single oversight which led to an outbreak of Salmonella infection in a past client’s farm somewhere in South West Nigeria, last year left him struggling to get 25% egg laying from 4,000 birds that had been laying 70 to 80% each day for months before then!

At a point he was spending more than he was getting from them, on feeding, medication etc. And they were still dying!

Eventually, to cut the losses, they slaughtered most of them, and focused on a new batch of P.O.L they had luckily been rearing from day old.

Now imagine if he had been using investors funds and not his own money?

That unplanned setback would have delayed paying any returns to the investor.

And it happened because of
poor management e.g. birds found a way to drop from their (old) cages into the droppings on the floor and began pecking and walking around in the droppings etc!

Instead of isolating them, some farm hands put those same birds back in the cages with others. This kept happening with no one thinking anything of it.

It was a disaster waiting to happen. And it eventually did, with a sudden marked drop in eggs output for about 2 weeks, followed by a rash of deaths.

My client was still in paid employment then, in a distant location – many hours away in another country. By the time I got to the farm (he asked his driver to take me down), the deep freezer was filled with hurriedly slaughtered layers!

The farm manager told me they were almost begging people to buy the frozen ones to free up space to keep more. And she was a trained graduate of agric, who had been managing the place for about 2 years (plus pigs and fish farms)!

So no one is immune to making mistakes. It’s hands on diligence that counts most, and ultimately determines success or failure with livestock – especially poultry.

And that explains why some people who did not even study agric, and who also had no business plans at startup have often succeeded in livestock farming.

They do it hands on, diligently, and take no chances – because their life savings are often invested!

My purpose here is to get you to understand that we’re dealing with living things here, which if not well handled can under perform or even die.

This is a very different scenario from investing in contract supply of imported rice, mobile phone, laptops or diesel – as you can imagine!

My role as a consultant is to offer my insights based on experience and know-how, to guide my clients in making what will hopefully be wise and profitable choices in the long run.

Once I’ve done that, my conscience stays clear.

So to round up, I’m asking you to think more CAREFULLY about what you can realistically handle to deliver profitable returns on – based on the plan I’ve given you, and what I’ve told you here.

When you succeed 1st time around, there will be an established basis on which to ask your investor to shell out more – if needed. And he’s likely to do so gladly, if the results you have to show are encouraging!

That’s how I see it: Prove yourself with a little first e.g. 500 and 1,000 as the 2 start-up scenarios.

Then you’ll be able to scale up, building on valuable experience you’ve gained – and even your investor will see good reason to go along with you.

Having said all the above…it will ultimately be YOURS to decide. If you wish to start big, go ahead.

Just be sure to proceed as carefully as possible.

Know also, that whatever you decide to do, will most likely have irreversible consequences in the end.
