Having A “Bad” Boss Can Boost Your Ability to Succeed

Who is a good boss? And when can you correctly say that your boss is “bad?” This is an issue that is subject to a lot of debate. Does the fact that your boss does(or makes you do) certain things you personally dislike, make him/her “bad?” I say NOT necessarily! This article explores the subject, using findings from a management research paper survey I conducted in 2001 as a basis for discussion.

In December 2001, I finished writing a (45-page) management research paper titled “Self-Development As A Tool For Achieving Career Advancement“.

In it, I referred to the observation Zig Ziglar made in his book – Over The Top – about certain employees who go to work each day without working to improve their abilities to do the job for which they are being paid. He accurately descried such persons as having one year’s experience repeated every other year, without making any effort to change the trend.

My paper’s research problems were stated in question form as follows:

1. What can the individual manager (employee) do to ensure career success or advancement in an organisation?

2. What can the organisation do to ensure an enabling environment is created for her managers (employees) to continuously achieve career success or advancement?

In trying to answer the above questions I administered(over a 3 month period) a structured questionnaire to respondents (managers in indigenous and multinational corporate organisations in two cities – Lagos and Benin).

I was particularly intrigued to note from the study’s results, that the managers strongly agreed that having a bad experience at work – such as working for a bad boss – could be beneficial for one’s personal development.

This was an interesting response because I had known many managers(including myself, early in my career as an employee) to complain bitterly if they had a boss that gave them what they interpreted to be “a hard time” at work. They would sometimes even wistfully express the desire to swop places with a colleague who they “thought” was having what they considered a better time since his/her boss never seemed to make life difficult for him/her.

What made it even more noteworthy was that when asked for details of why they thought their boss was bad, they would say things like “he never lets me rest – it’s always one assignment after the other, and its so difficult to satisfy him!“.

The truth, based on the experience of many successful executives is that in working with such a boss, many managers/employees have developed better capabilities than they would have, if they had reported to some more “passive” or less demanding kind of boss.

In fact, individuals like the “complaining” managers earlier described sometimes go on to get recognised/rewarded on moving to a new job or different department later on in their careers, for their seeming ability to produce good quality work under pressure etc. At that time the manager might begin to feel grateful to that “bad” or “difficult” boss from the past!

But then again, there can be instances when a boss is indeed bad.

Maybe he cheats, practices favoritism etc. In this case, the affected manger/employee could – among other possible actions – do well to note those qualities in the boss that he/she dislikes, and use them as a guide to avoid becoming like the boss in the future.

In other words, I am saying that by having a bad boss, a manager can learn how NOT to become one him/herself! Have you ever noticed that the people who set-up human rights or child abuse refuge centres etc are often people who themselves have suffered from that same problem before getting “liberated”?

To sum it up, the truth is:

1. That difficult persons can challenge us to put in more effort and deliver better results than we normally would, if they were not present – making their presence/actions a blessing of sorts for us.

2. We can sometimes learn how to be good from those who are bad – or not as good as they should be.

The above implies that having a bad boss can, to some extent, be a useful experience which ultimately equips us to achieve more of our potential than we normally would. The challenge is for you to make the most of the “bad’ situation: Study that boss, and learn how to manage him/her to achieve your desired goal(s).

As psychologists would say: The glass can be said to be half-full or half-empty. It all depends on how YOU look at it i.e. your mental attitude.

Stop Worrying Or Fail Frequently: How To Succeed With LESS Pain/Effort

Either do wrong or feel guilty but don’t do both. It’s too much work.” – Anonymous

Wherever You Are, Be There!

I doubt that there is any human being on earth that does not at one time or the other worry – even if only a little bit. Worrying, I believe is a part of our nature. But like all other things, we humans have the ability to CONTROL it.

Jim Rohn once said, “Wherever you are, be there”. A number of factors can cause a person to worry. Examples include financial difficulties, problems in the family or workplace etc. Sometimes we become so worried or pre-occupied by certain things that we inadvertently let them affect our behaviour or performance elsewhere. This is not only avoidable, but also often potentially harmful if not quickly checked.

Let Me Illustrate With The Following Analogy

Let’s say Mr. A has financial problems, which have caused – among other things – a strained relationship between him and his wife at home (not an uncommon occurrence!). Let’s assume his wife is a full time housewife, and as such does not currently contribute income towards the upkeep of the family.

When things fail to improve over time, Mr. A begins to worry about how he will cater for the family. So, he goes to work with this problem weighing so heavily on his mind that the “quality” of his workplace performance drops noticeably.

His boss (Ms B) who had been proposing to senior management that Mr. A be considered for a promotion tries repeatedly to get him to improve, but to no avail. When eventually Senior Management signals approval of Ms B’s proposal regarding Mr. A, she is no longer so sure he will be able to deliver in his present state of mind. His performance has not improved, and she is worried that it might do him more harm than good to get promoted to a higher, more demanding position at this time.

In summary, Mr. A ends up losing a long awaited opportunity for significant career advancement.

This happens because he allowed the discouraging developments in one aspect of his life to spill over, and negatively impact on another TOTALLY DIFFERENT aspect.

What makes this more tragic is the fact that Mr. A failed to realise that sustaining his good workplace performance could have led to a promotion or salary increase etc that would possibly have helped with his financial problems! And even if it did not help his finances, he would at least have still been rated highly by his boss and senior colleagues.

Don’t Let Your Problem Give Birth To Babies!

Please note my emphasis on the singular: Problem …NOT Problems. Keep EACH and EVERY problem you have in its place. Don’t let it sneak out through the back door and jump into other areas of your life. Make sure it always has to ask for your permission to do so.

And like you would do with your child when trying to stop him/her doing something wrong, be ready to ALWAYS tell it NO, when it asks. Problems can be very naughty, and without staying alert to this reality about them, just ONE of them could literally mess up your day, week or entire life!

The way I drive home this point during my talks is this: Why should you let the fact that you had an unpleasant experience at home turn you into a “grouch” or incompetent person at work? What is the point of starting off with ONE problem (whether gigantic, big, small, tiny or even microscopic) in your home, and letting that negatively affect your ability to do your job and relate with people you meet when you leave home?

Why let it spill over to other areas of your life that could otherwise go on normally if you made conscious effort to control yourself?

Doing that does not help you in anyway. If anything, you actually worsen your predicament because your problem eventually multiplies itself (i.e. gives birth to – what can be VERY – fast-growing “babies”!) so that you upset other people, or do other things wrong, and get yourself even more worried!

Jim Rohn’s “Wherever you are, be there” to me, means leave that domestic problem at home, and face your job at work squarely or be yourself wherever else you go soon as you leave home. Do your job and relate with others as well as you would have – or even better than – if you did not have a problem at home. (This requires a lot of mental discipline and effort, but you will find it is well worth it).

When you get back home, you can then continue trying to resolve the home front problem.

That way, you will be able to lead a normal life in all other areas of your life and eventually, that could even help you focus better to sort out the problem on the home front – and vice versa.

Fail to do this, and your problem will assume multiple dimensions since you will allow it spill over to, and negatively affect other aspects of your life. If someone upsets you before you leave work, quickly put aside your feelings of hurt, anger etc once you leave there, and ensure you’re FULLY yourself again by the time you get home.

What If Someone Runs Into Your Car?(Based On A True Story)

If your car gets run into on your way to work, or to give a lecture or attend a meeting etc, ensure you get a grip on yourself BEFORE you arrive at the venue. Going there with a scowl or frown on your face will not be a new or unusual achievement.

Instead, arrive there smiling and looking at ease with yourself. Only mention what happened maybe at the end – probably if someone sees the car and asks. Or maybe someone asks why you were late. By the time you narrate whatever transpired as a result of the accident, you are likely to gain the respect of your listeners, because they will marvel at your apparent ability to put such an experience aside and still give a good showing at the event!

And just in case you’re wondering about the “car accident” example, I’ll have you know that this happened to me during my last few weeks as an employee in Guinness Benin Brewery back in late 2001.

What follows is a narrative of the experience as I told it in my management research paper on Self-Development titled “Self-Development As A Tool For Achieving Career Advancement(A Practical Guide Based On Experience)” which is available as a FREE download on my website at http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

~~~~~~~~~~~Start Of Excerpt~~~~~~~~~~~
“Let me tell a short story to illustrate the point I want to make here. I bought my first car only about 4 months ago, and yet in the last 3 months since I began driving it between Lagos and Benin City, I have had quite a number of major car problems. There was the case of a burnt alternator cut-out (resulting in a battery rundown around Ore in Ondo state), which combined with major engine valves failure, to cause me and my wife and two sons to arrive Benin City after midnight!
Then there was a master clutch failure on Benin-Sapele highway which took over 7 hours to resolve (by now you must know the car is “Tokunbo” i.e. “imported second hand”!), and a serious accident in which someone ran into me from behind and almost drove the trunk of my car into its back seat.
The last one took us two weeks to get the car back in shape. By that time, Nkechi (my wife) had become quite knowledgeable about panel beating and spray painting, having developed a rapport with the workers from staying with them while I was away at work.
In each case, after coming to terms with the reality of the problem, we simply settled down and got involved with the mechanic, panel beater, painter etc who were engaged to carry out the repair work on the car. I would help hold the spanner, wrench, torchlight etc – and keep asking them questions about why they were doing what they were doing etc.
My logic was this: If I was going to be stuck there from 1.00pm till 10.30 p.m. (as happened with the Ore incident) watching these guys take my engine apart and put it back again, I could as well come away from it with some new knowledge and skills that would prove useful tomorrow, to me – or someone else. After all, it’s not everyday you get to “enjoy” the luxury of having you car engine stripped down for you to see the insides!”
~~~~~~~~~~~End Of Excerpt~~~~~~~~~~~

That was the story. Now, about 10 minutes after seeing the bashed-in “behind” of my Toyota Carina, I was back to my usual self – cracking jokes and making fun of the guy who had run into me – telling him how I symapthised with him (his car was a write-off)! I later overheard one of my wife’s friends (who had stopped by upon seeing us) say to her: “And your husband can still laugh?!”.

Of course I could laugh. Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the late Afro beat Music legend, once sang(in his usual pidgin english) “Why I dey laugh? I no fit cry”(translated “Why am I laughing? I cannot cry!”). Yes, why not laugh it off? It’s happened already, so you might as well review the damage done and decide on the next line of action. There’s nothing to be gained by dwelling on time-wasting arguments or worrying about how it could have been avoided etc.

Summary : Control your thoughts!

Some of us have a natural tendency to worry about what “people” say (or will say) about us. For instance someone we know (or think?) dislikes us suddenly makes friends with one of OUR own “friends”. We immediately begin to worry that s/he might “poison” our friend’s mind against us.

I’m sure you know what I mean. In the corporate world for instance, there is what Robert Kiyosaki called “vicious backstabbing” that perpetually goes on between and amongst managers, executives etc.

The fact however remains that you can NEVER know who is going to do that to you next – or when (except you’re psychic!).

As such you won’t be helping yourself in any way by worrying about it. What you CAN do is to keep doing what you do as well as you can, and it will only be a matter of time before you’re vindicated through your work.

By then, your detractors would have been identified and known for what they are. On the other hand, sometimes things are not always as they seem and your fears may actually be unfounded. Maybe what you think is happening is not actually so!

My advice is: Control your thoughts, and steer them away from the negatives that will cause you to worry.

A healthy level of self-esteem will enable you permanently eliminate the influence of what others say or do on you – whether it be good or bad.

Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are” – Dale Carnegie

FINAL WORDS: Your personal situation may differ from those under which these ideas have so far been applied.

As a result, it is impossible to guarantee you will get the same results I have every time.

Nevertheless, I will say that EVERY SINGLE THING I have said in this article is based on what I have done VERY successfully from my days as a process manager in a challenging fast-paced manufacturing workplace (before then I was a “WCW” i.e. World Class Worrier!), right up till this moment in my own life.

It works, and I continue to reap great benefits from having applied this same philosophy since becoming an entrepreneur. I repeat: IT WORKS, so USE IT!

Why It’s Smart to Start a Business BEFORE You Quit (or Lose?) Your Day Job

You must be in business for yourself, you’ll never get rich working for someone else.” – J. Paul Getty in his book titled “How To Get Rich

Many business startups fail NOT because of the owner’s lack of “technical know-how”, but quite often due to their lack of insight into many not-so-obvious dynamics that affect businesses.

This article alerts the veteran employee(or career person) to the need to proactively prepare for life AFTER paid employment, by starting up a business BEFORE s/he retires…OR BEFORE s/he gets laid off/retrenched/fired!

The Current Situation

Too often we have seen many people spend a significantly disproportionate period of their lives working single mindedly for their employers.

Then one day, they come to the shocking realization that they have to leave the company having arrived at the prescribed maximum age limit.

Many find themselves confused, not knowing where to start from – even though they leave the company with substantial monetary and other retirement benefits. They are unable to come up with viable business ideas they are sure guarantee sustainable results.

Incidentally, the pre-retirement courses many prospective retirees are made to attend just before they leave their companies often stop short of giving them practical exposure to the real-life business opportunities and challenges they are destined to face.

The Problem

One could say this should not present much of a problem, as it should not be unreasonable to expect such retirees to find people who can help them decide what to do i.e. where to invest their hard earned retirement benefits etc. The sad reality is that many of the retirees stand the risk of being “taken to the cleaners” by unscrupulous individuals who might decide to exploit the latter’s lack of know-how in the areas of business they settle for.

In addition there is – in Nigeria – a frustrating dearth of information, learning resources and facilities to assist retirees in preparing themselves to enter into the “real world”. As a result, they tend to venture into businesses of all sorts – some of which are actually lucrative – without adequate preparation. The stress/pain resulting from the trial and error approach they are forced to adopt ultimately takes its toll on them, leading to frustration.

The Alternative Proposed

The above makes it quite obvious that a glaring need exists for prospective retirees to better prepare themselves to startup and run their own businesses when they re-enter the real world. It has been said that retirement becomes a burden when people are not psychologically prepared for it.

What we see in our society daily confirms that this foregoing statement is indeed true for very many people. What is therefore needed is an alternative that will henceforth save prospective retirees the unnecessary pain and frustration that many before now have had to go through.

Be Careful – What You Bring From Paid Employment Will Not FULLY Prepare You

Let me tell you this. No matter how many years of workplace experience you have acquired in paid employment. No matter how many board meetings you have chaired. Nothing and I do mean NOTHING can possibly FULLY prepare you for the very hard knocks you WILL get when you eventually leave the security of paid employment to attempt earning a living running your own business.

Nothing they teach in MBA school prepares you to deal with the unpredictability of the real-world. No one can teach you HOW TO persevere in the face of repeat marketplace rejection and daunting obstacles that “appear to” conspire to stop you from making a success of your new life.

Starting up YOUR first business after being in paid employment in my experience is like becoming a day-old baby and learning to crawl, then learning to walk and finally learning to run ALL OVER again. The difference is that the child often will only take some months to a year or so to do all that .

In your case, chances are (going by my experiences – and the opinions of veteran entrepreneurs like Robert Kiyosaki, James Cook, Michael Masterson and others) that it is likely to take you at least five(5) years to get your business fully off the ground.

Final Words: And THAT is why I honestly believe you would be VERY wise to start THAT business that you will fall back on post-retirement TODAY, NOW, if you know you want to be financially secure in your old age.

Take this advice from someone who once enjoyed a successful career in paid employment and subsequently chose to quit while still VERY far from retirement age(i.e. 31 years) to pursue a long standing dream of venturing into business.

That person was me. And I believe that if it could have been as tough as it turned out to be for me, in spite of my relative youth and energy, ANYONE who retires after attaining the cut-off maximum age is likely to find it EVEN more difficult to endure the challenges needed to achieve business success.

No. 186: Champions Are Made of “HEART”, NOT Just Talented Muscle!

I explain below, why seemingly ordinary persons achieve exceptional successes, sometimes outdoing more talented contemporaries. You’ll understand why a lack of talent cannot STOP you from excelling. Indeed “pure determination”, mixed with relentless persistence can MAKE UP for ANYTHING you lack in talent.

How is this possible you ask?

It’s simple. The human being is a perpetual learning machine, capable of rapid assimilation of new information and acquisition of new skills. As long as there is sustained INTEREST on the part of s/he who desires to LEARN, nothing will be impossible for him/her.

This is the way we were made by the all knowing and all powerful Creator.

The problem is many of us do NOT know, and have never been told this truth before. Those who get told in most cases reject it, because the societal conditioning they have received all their lives make such a bold truth too scary to accept.

Burt Dubin says such people end up living their lives in “the mire of mediocrity”. I agree.

Do you want to be exceptional at what you do?

This is a very important question, and the answer you give to it will determine just how successful you become at ANYTHING you lay your hands upon to do with diligent commitment.

Last week, I watched the movie based on the amazing true life story of American gymnast – Gabby Douglas – who defeated major bouts of adversity through most of her early life, to become the first ever African American  Individual All-Around artistic gymnastics Champion at the London 2012 Olympic Games (See movie trailer here).

What I LOVE about American movies of this kind is that they rarely fail to capture the good, the bad and the ugly sides that occurred in the real life events dramatized.

And so, we got to see/hear how the young Gabby and her mother, and siblings daily struggled to scrape funds together to finance her need for regular gym training visits.

It was expensive, and their mother was all alone working round the clock to earn income to keep 4 growing kids.

We also saw/heard how her first coach repeatedly use subtle (and not-so-subtle) put-downs on Gabby, even right after she gave an excellent showing at a major competition!

She did not miss it, and made a point of telling her family about it, before using it to DRIVE herself to do better…until that got her noticed by the nationally recognized Coach Chow.

The latter would eventually be so impressed by Gabby’s natural talent and demonstrated drive, that he arranged for her to live with foster parents thousands of miles away from her family, so she could train at his gym, for the Olympic trials.

But the best part of the story was when she experienced her first major injury, followed by a woeful outing at a pre-trial meet.

That incident shook up Gabby’s confidence so badly that she did a complete career ambition u-turn and told EVERYONE she no longer wanted to go to the Olympics…she wanted to give up her Magnificent Obsession!

This is a kind of confidence crisis that every normal person experiences especially after facing unexpected setbacks or defeat. All who knew her were stunned to learn of her decision, yet none succeeded in making her rethink it.

I’ve been there – many times – as a sportsman, and in paid employment, as well as an entrepreneur. So I can tell you it can be most traumatizing.

Without the right emotional support from people around, experiences like that can BREAK a person, and keep him/her down for life.

This brings me back to Gabby and what she did to get past that phase…

Actually she was not the one who did it. Those she had around her, who loved her and had supported her from the very beginning, were the ones who helped her out.

Her coach, and especially her family played key roles.

The phone conversation with her brother, which ended with him asking her to open a parcel he’d sent to her, was however the key moment she rediscovered her passion.

In the parcel was a copy of a poster bearing affirmations that there mother had always taught them e.g. “Tomorrow will always be better than yesterday.”

The bigger version was always pinned up on their wall at home. During the really dark days they went through financially, they would draw inspiration and courage from reading it to keep going.

He told her NOT to give up on them (he actually began by calling her STUPID for wanting to quit at such a critical moment)…and then told her to pin the poster on her wall, ending by challenging her to bring home the Gold medal.

It was then that she REMEMBERED WHY SHE HAD BEGUN HER JOURNEY.

It all clicked back in place, and the next day, she walked back into the gym she’d quit from and smiling nodded at the coach that she was back and ready.

What followed next is now history.

But this story confirms what the coach told Gabby and her mother in his office the day Gabby stubbornly told them she was quitting.

He’d said (not exact words)…Champions Are NOT Just Made of Talented Muscle…Champions Are Made of HEART.

Looking at Gabby’s mother, Coach Chow had said: “Some athletes have it, some don’t. If she hasn’t got it, you can’t force it, and we can’t teach it.”

I believe that above applies to people in all fields – including public speaking.

Final Words: To be exceptional, regardless of challenges you face, YOU have got to have HEART!

If you really want to succeed badly enough at something, YOU WILL…and that will happen because when a human being REALLY wants something, s/he typically puts his/her HEART and SOUL into it.

Such persons can be formidable opponents to go up against in sports. And in business or other fields, having such persons in YOUR team can mean the difference between success and failure. As consultants or experts providing services of products, their clients will find them exceptional.

Do you want YOUR clients to call you exceptional and rave about you to others? If YES, then take a cue from the ideas shared in this article, and PUT YOUR HEART into what you do EVERYTIME!

To Succeed, Understand That Suffering Can Be Good for You!

Viewing adversity in a positive light(be it in business or everyday life) can sometimes amount to asking too much of some of us. As soon as a problem/difficulty appears to go on for longer than we feel we can tolerate. Or if it happens once too often for us to rationalize, we begin looking for someone or something to blame. Then the “Devil”(poor guy) gets accused of trying to make us fail.

Or someone in the “village” is fingered for “using remote control” to make our fortunes go sour. It can get worse – sometimes friends/relatives tell the affected person s/he must have done something wrong and ask him to pray for God to stop demonic attacks etc. This article presents timeless wisdom (based on testimonies by entrepreneurs of repute), and a narrative of a personal experience, that completely invalidate these frequently perpetuated myths.

Some People (Wrongly) Believe “Suffering” Only Comes To Those Who Do “Wrong”

Certain people wrongly believe that difficulty should never come the way of a person who strives honestly to achieve success – especially if s/he proclaims faith in God. Yet the evidence all around us proves irrevocably that it is often those who have passed through difficulty successfully, that end up achieving the successes they desire.

To drive home the point I’m trying to make here, I will refer to the very illuminating insight offered by a veteran entrepreneur – James R. Cook – in his best selling book “The Start up Entrepreneur”. He said that based on elaborate studies he had done of the lives of hundreds of entrepreneurs, he had come to the conclusion that there is a correlation between the amount of suffering a person undergoes before succeeding, and the degree of success s/he eventually achieves.

Going further, he explained that persons who set big goals for themselves should look forward to enduring long drawn periods of worry and painful adversity, adding that as the amount of suffering endured increases, so is the success ultimately recorded likely to increase too.

What Is The Purpose Of Suffering?

Any aspiring entrepreneur with a sound understanding of the “purpose of adversity” at the back of his/her mind, will be able to face squarely the business of paying his/her dues, ultimately, earning the right to enviable heights of success aimed for.

Jim Rohn advises that we should learn to view life as requiring us to succeed in spite of adversity and not in its absence. This is because, if there is no adversity, there cannot be achievement! Sounds simple – yet it CAN be so difficult to remember when one is going through adversity(I KNOW this because I have been “there” many times!). Which is why reading – as a habit – is essential. Reading helps to maintain mental stamina through repeated contact with words that communicate truths like those Jim Rohn shares, to us, so we can stay strong in those times of true testing.

A Personal Experience

I think I should give a personal example here. Some years ago, I placed an advertisement in The Guardian newspaper for a seminar, only to have a ZERO turnout of attendees on the scheduled date! After discussing about it for a while with a friend, I was able to arrive at 4 major faults with my plans/preparations that could have led to the problem. But rather than leave it at that, I decided to document the experience for use in future seminars as an EXAMPLE of how things can go wrong.

So, while still at the venue, I got my video cameraman to do a 10 minute recording of me, speaking about what had happened and what we believed had led to it. We deliberately added humour to the video clip by showing all the EMPTY seats in the seminar hall, and finally focusing on the wall clock, which showed it was already 1.00pm(planned seminar start time was 11.00am!).
You see, I made up my mind to use the lessons learnt from that “failure” to make myself better in every way possible. The memory of that failure DROVE me to be extra prepared for every project I undertake. And this has helped me win more high profile clients in my work.

It’s a habit I developed years ago – and it made me quite successful when I was in paid employment. Read my article titled “How To Turn A Major Blunder At Work Into A Career Advancement Opportunity ” to learn more.

Summary

So, let me challenge you. From today, stop asking why your plans are not going as well as another person’s. Begin to understand and appreciate the fact that you will have to find YOUR own unique path to achieve YOUR own success, which will require you to periodically deal with the challenge of unpleasant situations, in form of diverse visitations of adversity.

Know today that suffering – or adversity – is not bad – except you see it as bad. The perspective you adopt is what determines whether a particular experience is bad or good for you. If you choose to actively search for, and utilise the (ever present – but often hidden – potential equivalent) benefits of every experience of suffering you undergo, you will be better off for it over time.

PS: This article is based on a piece that was first published online on

Don’t Let ANYONE Give Up On Your Behalf!

Ever tried to pursue a goal that others were skeptical about/voiced their doubts to your hearing? If YES, do you recall how painful it was to hear them express a lack of faith in your ability to do something YOU BELIEVED was within your capacity to do?

When you had a setback(s), delay(s) or disappointment(s), what kinds of looks did you get from those who felt they had “warned” you not to embark on your “journey”? What comments did they make to your hearing? (You’ll probably never know what they said behind your back!).

Were you able to overcome THE “temporary defeat” (that’s what it is, you know – “temporary”), to eventually achieve the goal?

I certainly hope so, because if you did not, that means you chose to STOP because some tactless, “know-it-all”, arm chair theorist “dream killer” decided to give up on your behalf, and YOU LET HIM/HER!

1. It’s All About Perception

When human beings decide to embark on some meaningful endeavour, they usually try to share the “dream” with those they care about, and whose opinions they value.

The problem sometimes however is that people we care about measure us based on the “inside” knowledge they have of our foibles. In ironic contrast, total strangers who observe us(without bias) in passionate pursuit of our goals tend to become our greatest fans, and most fervent advocates.

Why? Because their perception of us is NOT coloured by what they KNOW (or think they KNOW) about us!

NB: In my experience however, if someone who has “inside” knowledge about us chooses to be mischievous, s/he can use it to “discourage” the “strangers” who admire/cheer us (and THIS does happen), so that the latter also begin to think/act like the former.

Everybody has shortcomings, inadequacies, or weaknesses. What sets one person apart from another will be his/her ability to ACHIEVE in spite of whatever limitations s/he has. Now, to achieve in spite of your “missings”, you will need to BELIEVE in yourself. Those who know you, unfortunately (for THEM) may not be willing to do the same.

By the time you start out in pursuit of your challenging goal some will cheer – initially – while others may fold their hands to “wait and see”.

When the inevitable delays, disappointments and setbacks begin to come, you may start discovering that NOT all those who are with you are really WITH YOU!

Having said that, the truth is you do not need others to believe in you FIRST before you can succeed. What you must however avoid is a situation where those who do NOT believe have the FINAL say about whether you should keep going or give up when things get tough.

You must NEVER put that kind of power in the hands of others – especially NOT people who do not believe like you do, in your dream/vision.

2. Deciding If YOUR Dream Is Still Worth Pursuing:

To keep going, you will come up with a new plan based on learnings from each one that fails, and summon courage to mention it to those who are still around, and who are magnanimous enough to pay you ANY serious attention. With some you may have to grit your teeth to ENDURE their heavenward “rolling of eyeballs” and sighs/looks of boredom. Oh yes, I’ve been there before – believe me! :-)

If you’ve been at it a while, you will probably have gotten used also to walking into a room and having those seated at a table suddenly stop talking. In this regard, a perpetual nagging feeling that you were being “discussed” may not be altogether unfamiliar!

The point being made is that you could end up completely ON YOU OWN at some point, with no one else believing in you, or your cherished dream – except YOU! THAT would be the ultimate test of YOUR own self-belief.

If you are the kind of person who judges whether something is worth doing based on the number of OTHER persons interested in doing (or willing to do) it, then you are UNLIKELY to stick with it till you achieve your purpose.

This is because THEIR loss of interest would be likely to cause you to lose your motivation to DO IT, even though you could actually succeed.

Self-Belief is what makes it possible for a small David to defeat a BIG Goliath in real-life.

VERY often it’s not size that matters, but ABILITY.

Funny thing is that regardless of our size, as influenced by our genetic make-up, we can ALWAYS hone our SKILLS so that our ability to ACHIEVE is improved. And frequently, when we back our IMPROVED ability with determination and SELF-BELIEF, it becomes extremely difficult for us to LOSE.

3. Quick Example – Law Degree At Age 60 Years(True Story)

I once read an article by Valerie Young in which she mentioned how a 60 year old Beverly Goodman whose marriage just ended, (ignoring discouraging comments from others that no one would hire a lawyer her age) attended law school while holding a full time job.

She subsequently passed the bar exams, and went on to land a job with a law firm at an age(61) many assume retirement is inevitable!

Goodman reportedly said “I thought this age stuff was baloney”. She believed – in spite of THEIR unbelief – that she could do it!

4. Don’t Engage “Fickle Minded”/”Failure-Phobic” Supporters!

Napoleon Hill advised that when you choose members of your mastermind team (persons you “recruit” to support you in pursuit of your valued goal), MAKE SURE you DO NOT choose persons who take defeat seriously.

Let me repeat that: Do not bring on board or share details of your plans’ progress with people who have a NEGATIVE view of “failure or adversity”.

Don’t engage “cry babies” i.e. the perpetual worriers and fickle-minded persons who see every little problem as a catastrophe, and who readily conclude that ALL is lost without being willing to join in to find solutions.

Fickle minded people are driven – even RULED – by their FEARS.

This makes them VERY risk averse, and consequently they never venture beyond what they already know, to try anything new in their own lives. The result is that they live lives of mediocrity till they pass on.

If you have such people in your team, they WILL be the first to throw their hands up the minute any little problem crops up.

By the time the BIG problems come, they will be screaming for everyone to “abandon ship”.

If you have many of them on board, they’ll all jump off leaving you behind. If they happen to be the ones you depend on for financial support, and/or access to other resources, you will find it difficult getting ANYTHING out of them at critical periods.

That, and NOT the fact that your situation is hopeless is what could ultimately cause your plans to fail PERMANENTLY. At that point, THEY would have successfully given up on YOUR behalf!

Your dreams are too IMPORTANT to the world, for you to let that happen.

So PLEASE avoid enlisting the support of these kinds of people – who can sometimes come in the shape of your closest relatives and friends. In case you discover one or more such persons in your team, plan to “offload” them As Gently As Possible (AGAP) and ASAP!

Trust me – you’ll be glad you did.

To Truly Succeed, Help Others UNCONDITIONALLY

[Tip: The quote below, credited to the Dalai Lama inspired me to write this article] No matter the individual wealth we accumulate or personal achievements we record, as long as we fail to help others struggling/suffering around us find their own places in life (NOT necessarily by giving them money), we WILL ALL be failures – ultimately.

“Each one of us is responsible for the whole of human kind. We need to think of each other really as brothers and sisters and to be concerned for each other’s welfare. Rather than working solely to acquire wealth, we need to do something meaningful, something directed seriously towards the welfare of humanity as a whole.” – Dalai Lama

Why so many people fail to understand this truth beats me…especially when many claim to be SPIRITUAL?

How can you be spiritual, when you lack the ability to feel EMPATHY.

When you lack EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Too many people love to feel big and accomplished when they see others looking up to them in envy and begging for help. What they fail to realise is that what they have which they allow their egos to get bloated over, has been given to then in TRUST.

The right thing to do, is to SHARE it with others, so as to complete the circle.

We must understand that we are not here to compete, but to create, and improve the lives of one another.

Do you know that if we – in Africa especially – were to start living our lives guided by the words of the Dalai Lama, we would TOTALLY eradicate backwardness, poverty, suffering and wars from our continent?

Check yourself – look around your neighbourhood, and social groups.

What do you see? Is there something you can TEACH someone, to equip him/her to become self-dependent and more fulfilled TODAY?

As always, I walk my talk. I do not ask people to do what I cannot or will not do.

I’m already doing my bit. And you know what I’ve discovered?

You really won’t need a grant from the Ford Foundation or World Bank, to make a lasting poitive impact in the lives of people who need your help!

Just share what you know – teach others how to succeed the way you have.

Give of yourself – unconditionally.

Open doors of opportunities.

Create a level playing field for aspirants to a position.

If you are in a position of influence or authority, give everyone a fair and impartial opportunity to get what they want, based on merit and competence.

And one more thing: Don’t tell people you wish to help that they must first give up their religious beliefs

For instance, asking a Muslim to become born again, as a pre-condition for helping him/her.

Doing this would defeat your purpose.

Let your deeds speak volumes for your religious convictions.

Those who are touched will on their own get converted.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with “phony” converts who only join you because they want what you are offering – and NOT because they truly believe.

Sooner than later, they will cause you major embarrassment!

Once again, let me ask you to read the wise words of the Dalai Lama:

=Starts=

“Each one of us is responsible for the whole of humankind. We need to think of each other really as brothers and sisters and to be concerned for each other’s welfare. Rather than working solely to acquire wealth, we need to do something meaningful, something directed seriously towards the welfare of humanity as a whole.” – Dalai Lama

Lincoln Self-Studied Public Speaking, and So Can You! (3 Tips)

Preamble: Don’t Waste Time Waiting To Find a Speaking School!

Many people I have spoken with out here about learning public speaking have demonstrated this bias. Whenever I explained to them that there are many self-study learning resources they can adopt to learn public speaking, they expressed reservations about adopting a similar method.

I am not saying it is wrong to attend public speaking classes or school, if you can find – and afford – them. However, my studies have revealed to me that some of the best speakers the world has known actually learnt via self-study.

Here’s how they achieved that feat:

1. They Read Books:

They read extensively about master speakers still alive and those who had passed on. They studied their biographies to identify what made those speakers successful.

Then they used what they learnt as a guide in developing their own unique skills and styles as public speakers. You do NOT need to be in a formal learning environment or class, to read books and learn from them. It is usually done better when you are alone!

2. They Thought Deeply:

To succeed as a speaker, you must have a message you want to pass to anyone who will listen. To do really well, you have to be VERY passionate about your subject – feel deeply and strongly about it.

It is this passion for the subject that will make you think deeply about it, so that you generate powerful messages destined to impact your audience and make them appreciate you. Thinking deeply about issues does NOT require being in a formal learning environment. AGAIN, it is usually done better when you are alone!

3. They Practiced:

And they did not wait until they had an audience to do it. Abraham Lincoln reportedly practiced as he walked to and from his home, office etc. He gathered people around him to listen to his talks. When possible, he took part in debates.

He sat alone in his room and read aloud speeches crafted in line with what he had read, and thought up, revising it till it sounded right. Sometimes he silently imagined himself delivering his talk – visualising the event the way he wanted it to take place.

Today, with availability of audio and video recorders built into various devices such as phones and computers, you have more options for practicing in the absence of an audience!

Dale Carnegie recommends recording your planned talk or speech and playing it back to hear yourself. It provides excellent avenue to improve your delivery. Practicing does NOT necessarily require being in a formal learning environment. You can use the above strategies, and also gather family members or close friends together to critique your talk.

Here’s more advice:

In an article I read, Les Brown recommended that one Speak for FREE until you are sure you’ve got the hang of it. Burt Dubin agrees, having passed the same route to success himself. In the introduction video on his website, he says “If I, a high school drop out can do it, then so can YOU! ” I would add that IF Abraham Lincoln, with all the odds stacked against him could have done it, via self-study (and in spite of myriad failures), then so CAN YOU!

I followed Burt’s advice from his many articles and newsletters, back in 2002, and before the end of that same year, I successfully negotiated and got paid for my first speaking outing here in Lagos.

Summary

Not every one will have access to formal institutions providing public speaking training or coaching. If that applies to you, know that you will NOT be the first person with that seeming limitation. Abraham Lincoln’s example is especially compelling. He walked miles to borrow books and read under candle light late into the night, and as dawn broke, woke up to continue.

He had only a few months of schooling, and so lacked access to formal learning institutions to pursue his passion for speaking. But this did not deter him. He adopted self-study methods, and practiced endlessly. Today he is remembered as one of the greatest speakers the world has known. So, sometimes it could actually be a blessing in disguise that you have to self-study.

Indeed, access to public speaking training school does NOT guarantee you will become a successful speaker!

That outcome depends mainly on your INTEREST, DESIRE, and PASSION – demonstrated in the energy you will pour into doing all the studying, thinking and practicing that will make you develop into a good speaker. You alone ultimately determine how good you will become – and NOT necessarily your attendance of a public speaking school.

FINAL WORDS: A PERSONAL Mentor CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOU:

I honestly believe that if available, the quality of INSTRUCTION your receive in the art of public speaking can make a difference in how you turn out as a speaker. A competent mentor will know how to help you discover and develop your FULL potential. S/he will guide you, drawing from his/her past personal speaking experiences and also from studying other speakers.

But you know what? S/he, i.e. your mentor, does NOT need to meet with you physically, to play this important role. Indeed, today’s technology makes it much easier to receive instruction on almost any subject, regardless of distance or geographical location – public speaking being a good example.

In case you’re looking to get started with a mentor, one that I strongly recommend (and who I represent as Sole Agent) is Burt Dubin – who mentors experts who want to be speakers, and speakers who want to be masters. Click here to visit his Speaker Mentoring Products and Services website.

New Autorun Multimedia DVD Information Product: Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep

They LOVED it. However, I’ll write later on about the intriguing events preceding the talk I delivered yesterday, at Sherryville Arcade-Lagos, to a group of CEOs and Network Marketing Professionals. (Hint: I came in right from Cotonou border, but arrived over 1 hour late, despite hiring a taxi, due to crazy Lagos traffic)!

To make it up to attendees who waited (those who had to leave get the DVD), I gave an EXTRA hour of information, education, tips and insights based on multiple true stories!

Now, I’ve bundled the DVD with the 2 hour MP3 recording of the talk (along with other educational audio recordings on Web Marketing) for sale as my latest Information Product.

Screenshot of autorun DVD menu for 'Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep.'

The DVD’s contents include…

1. Two FULL Hours (4 MP3 Audio Recordings) of my Talk delivered yesterday – on the subject:

“Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep.”

2 Questions I asked the audience…

1. How much money do you spend using the web monthly?

2. How much money do you MAKE from using the web monthly?

None of them could say he was making MORE than he SPENT on the web!

[Note to reader: If YOU also spend MORE, this DVD recording of the talk can help you!]

Imagine you are a shareholder in a company, and learn the CEO is continually SPENDING on a marketing activity that yields less than the money spent, without making changes to get better results – month in, month out.

Would you not challenge the CEO to do better, or possibly even demand that s/he be replaced for reckless spending?

That’s why YOU need to LEARN what to do to attract buyers at zero cost, by listening to these DVD audio recordings!

Key talking points I discussed using multiple true stories about myself/my clients were:

a. What to do to MAKE more money than you spend using the web for your business

b. What you should be selling that you are not (NO MATTER what business you do).

c. How to continue selling even during holidays, when offices and banks are closed.

d. How to make smart use of technology to cut your marketing costs by 25 to 50%.

e. How to find the right kinds of buyers for your products/services.

f. Why you need to educate your prospects and clients if you want to sell MORE profitably.

g. Why website traffic is NOT what you need to monitor, if you want web marketing success.

h. How a Web Marketing System can make ALL the above happen even while you sleep.

This auto run DVD contains MP3 recording (4 parts totaling over 2 hours) of EVERYTHING I said about each of the above.

In addition, there is screen shot video presentation which explains the 9 key components of a Web Marketing System (WMS).

Plus, you also get my 3 part educational MP3 audio series:

“Why You Need a Web Marketing System”(see “Audio 1”, “Audio 2” & “Audio 3” on DVD menu.

All buyers of the DVD get FREE 30 minutes Consultation Session with me, on what to do & how to get started, to achieve zero cost marketing successes.

Price = N5,000 (Five Thousand Naira)

That meeting held today (Wednesday) for approx. 5 hours, on how to use potential promotional materials from their ground breaking events, (which already have corporate sponsors eagerly teaming up with them – see www.globalkonsultgroup.com/fbk) to take their Web Marketing to the next level, so they can better create client attracting awareness.

Yesterday (Tuesday 3rd March 2015) p.m, I arrived Cotonou-Benin Republic for a meeting with the CEO (Barr. Arnold NANA) of Global Konsult Group, a multidisciplinary client company.

Tomorrow, Thursday 5th March 2015 by 4p.m, I will be back in Nigeria (at Sherryvile Arcade, Berger bus stop- Lagos (opposit First Bank Plc, speaking to Small Business CEOs and Network Marketing professionals on THIS same theme.

2 Questions for YOU…

1. How much money do you spend using the web monthly?

2. How much money do you MAKE from using the web monthly?

NB: If – for you – 2 is LESS than 1, you REALLY NEED to attend my talk, or get the DVD recording.

Key talking points I will explain using true stories about myself/my clients:

Question: Why LEARN FROM ME?

Answer: Attracting profitable buyers at zero cost even while one sleeps, is what I do, as a Location Independent Multipreneur.

Over 95% of my clients have NEVER met me in the flesh, and yet some have been buyers of my products/services for over 7 years from locations across the length and breadth of Nigeria (Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Niger, Oyo, Ekiti, Plateau, Delta, Enugu, Rivers etc)… as well as within and outside Africa (Canada, Abu Dhabi [UAE), Tanzania, Benin Republic, USA, Holland etc).
