Act On Your Instincts/Intuition to Achieve Success [True Story: How I Won a Paid Speaking Invitation At First Contact, With No Prior Planning, and at Zero Cost]

As the true story I share in this article illustrates, sometimes you need to follow your instincts/intuition, and take action to get what you want, without procrastinating, if you want to achieve important breakthroughs in life.

Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone in the classic Self-Help book titled “Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude” repeatedly emphasized to the reader, the importance of applying what they called the “Self-Starter”: DO IT NOW!

<h3>Here’s a quote from their book, that explains:</h3>

<blockquote>”…Now what is the secret of getting things done and what is the self-starter that forces you to use this great secret? The secret of getting things done is to act. The self-starter is the self-motivator: DO IT NOW!

As long as you live, never say to yourself, “DO IT NOW!” Unless you follow through with desirable action.

…Many persons have the habit of procrastination. Because of it, they may miss a train, be late for work, or even more important – miss an opportunity that could change the whole course of their lives for the better. History has recorded how battles have been lost because someone put off taking desirable action.

…Memorize the self-starter DO IT NOW!

DO IT NOW! can affect every phase of your life. It can help you do the thing you should do, but don’t feel like doing. It can keep you from procrastinating when an unpleasant duty faces you.” </blockquote>

<h3>True Story: How I Won a Paid Speaking Invitation At First Contact, With No Prior Planning, and at Zero Cost</h3>

One morning in 2012, before I relocated to Benin Republic, I was driving past the premises of a popular higher institution in Lagos, when – acting on impulse – as the thought flashed through my mind, I turned into the compound and drove down to the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development on campus.

I’d once read about the centre on the institution’s website and often wondered about opportunities for collaboration to be had there.

With no specific plan of what I wanted to say in mind, and carrying no promotional materials – not even business/call cards (which I stopped using in 2004) – I walked into the office of the centre’s director, having been shown the way by students I met outside the building, on the campus grounds.

<h3>I told the secretary in the front office my name and added that I had a suggestion that would help the director add more tangible real-world relevant value to content served students being taught entrepreneurship there.</h3>

What I said, the serious tone with which I said it, and the confident manner I carried myself, looking directly into her eyes, undoubtedly made an impression.

I say this because she promptly asked me to wait, then went in to announce my presence to the director, returning to usher me in within minutes.

I walked in while quickly thinking of possible topics to present as a basis for discussion that would capture the director’s interest. By the time we’d exchanged pleasantries, I still had not settled on anything specific.

So, once again, I followed my intuition.

I told her that I believed the unique socioeconomic environment in which entrepreneurs have to function in Nigeria is one that nothing in our classrooms can adequately prepare us for.

She nodded in agreement to that, and continued doing so as I gave personal examples of how I’d learnt that truth the hard way after I quit paid employment to venture into entrepreneurship as a Nigerian living in Nigeria.

<h3>I then made my pitch by saying her centre’s learners needed someone who had been through it, to share with them useful tips and insights towards minimizing trial and error to reach their respective goals</h3>

This, I added, was important in light of the need for them to make the most of limited time and resources they have access to – otherwise many would likely be discouraged and even quit due to the hardships lack of such know-how would visit upon them!

<b>Long story short, she responded by saying I’d come in at a time when she was musing over how to identify and invite a guest speaker for the annual entrepreneurial lecture due to take place in a month’s time.</b>

She asked for my business card and I told her I used none.

“Then what do you use?” she asked in surprise.

I replied that it was just my website, and that it had all the information she would need about me and what I offerred..

She promptly handed me a piece of paper on which I wrote the website address and gave to her.

She then gave me her complimentary card, promising that she would review the website and if satisfied, would recommend to the board that I be invited as guest speaker for the event.

<h3>Less than 2 weeks later, after I’d sent in the draft talk outline in response to her emailed request, I got an email from her, bearing a scanned version of the formal invitation on letterheaded paper advising that the board had approved my selection as guest speaker.</h3>

In the 2 weeks that followed, I gave the talk to an audience in a packed auditorium with students/top officers of the institution present and the print/TV/Radio media covering the event.

Everything went well, and I even got interviewed after the event. The icing on the cake was that I got paid – even though my offer had been to give a FREE talk!

Looking back, there is no doubt in my mind that applying the “DO IT NOW!” self-starter was the key to my achievement of that breakthrough.

Having said that however, it is instructive to note that if I had not had an Effective Online Presence (EOP) that did what it was meant to do (which was to get visitors convinced that I’m the person they need) that self-starter would not have worked for me.

In case you wonder what I had that produced such an effect, I call it a Web Marketing System (WMS) – <a href=”http://tayosolagbade.com/smclub-nonfarm.html” target=”blank”>click here to learn more about it</a>

There is a saying that if you cannot be away from your business for fear of things not going right, that’s not a business – it’s a job.

Now, it is my considered opinion that if there is any kind of business that the owner needs to be able to get time away from, without fear of things going seriously wrong, it’s the farm business.

Why?

Because starting and running a farm business is a very demanding process, that requires investment of money, time, effort and resources by the owners and members of his/her team.

PII 020: A BOPMS™ Will Enable You Run Your Farm Business Profitably Even When You’re Away!

Quite often many owners and their farm hands/managers have to work long hours, round the clock into weekends and on public holidays to keep things running smoothly.

In this part of the world, majority of them have to contend with additional problems amounting to extremes of the above – leaving them even lesser time to be away from their businesses.

For instance, in Nigeria, where public water supply and electricity which others take for granted, are often very limited in availability, the owners frequently have to go the extra mile to provide themselves an alternative source – and that has direct and indirect implications in financial and non-financial terms.

Apart from that, the need to establish and maintain reliable medium to long terms sales outlets for products turned out by the farm enterprise also tend to keep the owners perpetually busy.

Many start out depending on the mass of market women and other small buyers who come directly to the farm gates. However, over time, for those whose output plans outstrip the demand from such groups, they sometimes find themselves limited in production output capacity due to an inability to locate bulk buyers.

Lacking formal systems for attracting bulk buyers into formal contract relationships, they end up being at the mercy of the small buyers, to the extent that they are forced to sell close to cost price or even at a loss, to keep production going.

The picture I have painted above is representative of what many farm business owners find themselves faced with in many parts of Nigeria/Africa.

I have spoke to several farm CEO clients who complained to me about various aspects of the above problem, and how it has limited them.

However, every time I have tried to talk to them about setting up SYSTEMS in their businesses, to reduce the unpredictability and variability in their operations, many have simply found it hard to appreciate.

When I say SYSTEMS, I mean having a tried and tested set of procedures and processes identified to be critical to the uninterrupted functioning of your business operations.

This SYSTEM is what would ensure that your farm business is able to consistently turn out the expected products using the prescribed inputs of manpower and other resources, over time.

We see systems in place around us all the time, but many of us lack the training to identify them for what they are. I like to call them Best Practice Systems.

Examples include those which make it possible for EVERY BMW model that comes off the production line to deliver performance and “aesthetic appeal” similar to others.

To put it another way, every person who goes to buy a BMW does so often with the expectation that s/he will not get anything less than what s/he has seen others get in the past.

Same applies to you when you buy an I-Phone, or Blackberry Smartphone. The makers have put in place SYSTEMS that ensure buyers get what they promise. Exceptions will arise – but they will be few, and the companies will have SYSTEMS in place to address them as quickly as possible to the satisfaction of the buyers.

As a farm business owner, having a Best Practice System in place CAN dramatically boost your enterprise’s productivity and profitability.

The system would be one that ensures your farm runs right regardless of changes in personnel, or variations in operational parameters.

A SYSTEM that enables you achieve such predictable performance in your farm business is what I call a “Best Operating Process Management System” (BOPMS) for Profitable, and Stress-Free Farm Business Management.

And it is something I offer to help results focused Farm CEOs put in place on their farms.

But use of a BOPMS is NOT for all comers. You must be ready to take your farm business to the next level.

Or if you’re just starting, you must have a vision to operate at an optimal level of productivity from the very beginning.

It means you want to be able to cut down time lost to trial and error over the long term. Instead you will be keen to have your operations “benchmarked” to identify the best ways to run them, to maximise desired output.

Then you want ALL your team members to be trained to adhere to that proven “way” of running the business – whether they are new on the job or old hands.

It is only when that kind of system is in place that you can be sure the business will run right even when you choose to stay away.

The best part is that a BOPMS will equip you with remote monitoring “instruments” that you can use to accurately determine what has happened while you were away, to the extent that you will be able to deduce what was done or not done, and any likely consequences.

Not just that, a well developed and implemented BOPMS will include reliable systems for securing profitable sales outlets for farm produce on a medium to long term basis.

With such a system in place, it goes without saying that you, as the owner, will feel more comfortable staying away from the farm, if and when the need arises. You would worry less about coming back to discover things gone – or going – wrong, that would require killing of fires.

The above scenario tends to come across as being too good to be true for some Farm CEOs, and I understand why: They have not known any other way from the one they are used to.

Some have seen others doing it the same old fashioned way for decades – and they’ve not done badly.

I however argue that you can do more – or even better. Especially by “gifting” yourself the opportunity to work less, and having your business work more for you – even when you’re away.

This is why I offer interested Farm CEOs an opportunity to have me develop and implement a BOPMS for their farm businesses.

If the benefits described above appeal to you…if you would like to experience what it feels like to really own a business that does NOT feel like a job…that gives you peace of mind…click here to request details of how I can help you [I’ll send you the one page mind map showing key components of a BOPMS – with annotations and notes].

[TRIBUTE] Muhammad Ali: Builder of People & Bridges Between People!

This article is based on excerpts from a message I recently sent to a friend, in which I shared my feelings about how Muhammad Ali influenced me. It’s a short piece – especially by my standards – but it’s just right for the personal tribute I’ve been meaning to publish on this blog in commemoration his recent passing :-)

<H3>Like many people around the world who’ve watched the video of the popular “15 Rounds” tribute done by Billy Crystal 36 years ago to Muhammad Ali, I also found it very moving and inspirational.</H3>

<a href=”http://www.sportingnews.com/other-sports/news/muhammad-ali-billy-crystal-impression-15-rounds-retirement-ceremony-1979/164ofgktedjhf133vv24zxcf06″ target=”blank”>Click here to read one of several articles featuring the video version of that tribute</a>.

Like many have noted since his burial, that tribute (which Billy Crystal released on social media after Ali’s death was announced) reflected, among other things, the fact that Ali brought out the best in everbody – regardless of their differences.

He was a builder of people and bridges between people.

Ali didn’t stop at just being good at what he did. Instead he went further to act as a Social Change Agent against problems he identified in his society.

<H3>Politics did not interest him. So being politically correct was never something he tried to be </H3>

Instead he said whatever he felt needed to be said, no matter whose Ox was gored. And he neither played favourites, nor allowed narrow or irrational sentiments to influence his expressed views.

Quite often Ali was practical and realistic in making his points on issues.

Racial discrimination was one subject he really spoke passionately about. His personal experience of getting thrown out of a white owned restaurant (where they told him “we don’t serve blacks here”) in his home town of Louisville just after he returned from winning the gold medal in boxing at the 1960 Rome Olympics, fueled his drive and passion to influence a change in society!

There is no doubt that because of the way he used his fame to speak against racial discrimination in the USA for instance, changes in segregation practices happened faster in that society than they would have, if he’d chosen to keep quiet and focus on the profession at which he was exceptionally gifted and successful.

<H3>I’ve long followed Ali as he spoke against racism etc despite the risks/pains it cost him. </H3>

His life story is a testimony to the power of faith and self-belief. Despite being just one man, he succeeded in unifying people across racial, religious, language and other socio-cultural barriers.

The Muhammad Ali Centre he founded has helped many thousands of disadvantaged people while he lived, and continues to do so.

Incidentally that centre was setup to fulfil the dream he described when he answered a little boy’s question: “What will you do when you retire from boxing?”

See <a href=”http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2QE9XBovMk0″ target=”blank”>the video in which he gives his answer to that question – click here</a>.

That video and the one for the earlier mentioned tribute, as well as those in which he spoke in interviews against racism and his views of how society should be run without discrimination, are why I made him one of my role models in life.

<b>Muhammad Ali set a great example for how to excel professionally/personally and then use one’s success to make a useful impact socially in people’s lives.</b>

Our respective societies will be much better off if we can EACH emulate this man’s wonderful qualities in the way we live our lives and relate with one another.

To Achieve Massive Self-Marketing Impact, You Need Google Plus [Hint: Save Time/Effort by Auto-Publishing New Client Attracting Posts On It]

If you’re a self-marketing professional, a Google+ profile can help you get noticed and ultimately attract paying clients to you.

I say this as one who has reaped such benefits from using it for self-marketing.

For some strange reason, many business persons I’ve checked out often stop at creating a Google+ profile, but never progress beyond putting in few basic details about themselves into it.

The result is that they unknowingly deny themselves potentially valuable opportunities for high quality zero cost marketing exposure via the Google search engine!

<I>[NB: Apart from a “Personal Google+ Profile” there is also “Google Plus for business” through which you can setup and utilize company pages to promote your business <a href=”https://blog.hootsuite.com/create-a-google-plus-page/“ target=”blank”>Click here to read an article by Hootsuite</a> about how to do that]</I>

<b>I decided to write this piece after I accidentally stumbled on the Google+ profile for a recent prospect with whom I had preliminary interactions. </b>

The very bare appearance of his page shocked me – especially given the fact that as a real estate sales professional, a platform of this kind offered him ample opportunity for self-marketing.

So I went out of my way to send him a message via email with links to references, followed by a 4 minute Whatsapp audio suggesting simple ideas for updating the “About” page as well as the “Posts” on his Google+ profile.

<h3>What I proposed to him was based on what I did to set mine up (see link below) – and what I do to keep it updated/alive, in a way that periodically generates sales leads for me</h3>

The “About” page’s fields have been filled with descriptive content written in a way that communicates the solutions I offer.

Like I always tell my Web Marketing System (WMS) clients, it’s very important to visibly display references to your key offerings and contact details in as many different formats (text, image, video etc) as possible.

That was why I made sure to design and upload a banner (in the space provided at the top of the profile page) featuring highlights of my flagship URL, and products, alongside my headshot and email address.

Most important however, is the fact that I setup my profile page to be “alive”, so that it never gets stale, and is therefore able to do its job of attracting potential clients to contact or at least connect with me.

Indeed, a review of my posts will reveal that some persons in the past published enquiries about my products/services upon reading them. Today, a number of those enquirers have become my clients.

Yet this happen(ed) despite the fact that I never had/have to sit in or stay on my Google+ profile to create updates. Instead the posted updates happen automatically from my blog at www.tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets – so it’s not like I have to come there and make entries.

<h3>Having said the above, note that you need to creatively populate your blog and profile with useful content that can make you get found – due to the interest it generates in the minds of your target audience.</h3>

It goes without saying that doing THAT is not easy. Compared to putting in your “About” page details, it’s a lot of hard work.

But if you do it right, it will work for you.

Among other benefits, when people search Google using your name, a more comprehenive Google+ profile page, complete with visuals you’ve put up will appear in the results page. And that has a way of boosting your credibility in the minds of those who see it.

By the time they click to learn more, the quailty of information and education they encounter will further draw them closer to taking action to contact you, or at least add you to their circles – both of which get you nearer to your intended goal of selling to them!

If you’d like to have those benefits, I recommend you work on your profile asap so it can start working for you – like mine does for me.

To attract more clients at zero cost, you need to leverage your Google+ profile – and other zero cost self/business promotion platforms to boost the marketing reach and impact of solutions you offer.

It is however instructive to note that I’ve gone further to incorporate intelligent automated content updating systems on my website, that auto-publish my new content updates from this blog to my Google+ profile.

I do the above for my Web Marketing System (WMS) clients, and also coach them to do what I do for them, by themselves, over time – as members of my Web Marketing for Farm CEOs (WM4CEOs) club.

Those Who Make False Claims About Their Abilities Frequently Reap Failure in Return [Do Your Achievements Confirm What YOU Claim You Can Do?]

Many adults know the “joke” about parents (especially fathers) who tell their kids that they (the parent) always came first in class (even when they did not) during their schooling days. They then use that “claim” to demand that their kids deliver similar performances.

The irony is however often that the achievements of most of such parents in real-life, post-school, tend not to justify the claims they make, and some of their kids, who are perceptive enough, readily notice that.

Some people seem to feel a need to impress others by making false claims about their abilities and/or past accomplishments. The point I am making is that adults, often taking a cue from prevailing societal preferences and values, sometimes feel pressured to present themselves in a manner that will win them approval from a larger audience.

That is not bad in itself, IF the person then takes steps to ACQUIRE the knowledge/competencies that will confer on him/her the ABILITY to achieve at the level of proficiency s/he wishes to be acknowledged for.

The problem however is that some of these people are NOT prepared to work that hard to get such results. They prefer instead to take shortcuts that win them the rewards they seek without the PAINS.

So they LIE.

That’s when a job applicant states military experience in his resume dating back to before he was born! Or an interviewee presents samples of past completed works, which turn out – by a twist of fate – to have actually been those done by his INTERVIEWER!!

It would interest you to know that the examples I just gave are REAL and were obtained from the published results of a recent survey conducted in the US titled “Who lies more on resumes?”. Visit the link below to read the full report.

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/career/?p=381&tag=nl.e101.

People who get ahead by using these dishonest methods are often quite adept at generating excuses for the subsequent poor performance they inevitably deliver. It’s either they were not told on time, that the task or assignment was urgent/time bound. Or a power glitch damaged their PC/flash drive just at the moment they wanted to email the finished work or print it out. :-)

Also, these people will usually be the first to kick against attempts to define roles/responsibilities clearly for proper accountability in their teams. This is because they know their survival depends on ensuring they stay hidden from scrutiny, while they ride on the efforts of other members.

No one is (and no one can be) perfect, but in order to continually function at our best, it is good to strive perpetually towards perfection. I suggest ways to avoid falling into the trap of feeling the need to claim you CAN when you KNOW you do not have the competence to DO SO.

1. Learn to speak TRUTH. A lie is a lie. When you prevaricate, it is still a lie! Learn to say exactly what you can do, and DON’T put any icing on it. If you can build simple spreadsheets with formulas, don’t claim you can also use VBA code, with Windows API calls to create top end custom Excel-VB driven spreadsheet software like those you saw on a website last month! You never know who will remember what you said, and come calling some time in the future to ask you to do something THAT advanced for them.

2. Know What You Want. When you acquire skills and knowledge related to what you WANT to do, you will usually need no push or prodding from others to keep doing so on a consistent basis. By implication, you will easily stay on the cutting edge of latest developments in your field. Telling others you can do something in relation to that area, will therefore not pose any risk to you or your integrity.

3. Believe In Yourself. You must develop your self-esteem to the point that you KNOW, and are thoroughly convinced that it is not what others say (or how they feel about you, or act towards you), that determines if you are good or not good at what you do. Learn to feel good about yourself regardless of what happens outside of you.

This is something that is very hard for a lot of people to do. Yet, working hard at it will actually end up making you come across as self-confident, assertive and at ease with yourself. The foregoing are all qualities that most people are attracted to – meaning you still end up winning not just the approval of others, but also their respect and admiration. In essence, you would have achieved the same end result, BUT without having to use dishonest methods.

In life, the people who end up succeeding with integrity, are those who are true to themselves EVERY day. Make a point of ALWAYS ensuring that you say ONLY what you can do, and DO what you say you will do. Doing so will earn you a reputation that will make others believe in, and respect you EVERYWHERE you go.

[RECOMMENDED] 5 Steps To Get The Best Eggs Possible (from www.hobbyfarms.com)

<I>[Tayo Solagbade’s note to reader: Every week I search the web for potentially useful articles on farm business management. This write up by HobbyFarms.com offers practical wisdom that any poultry farmer looking to boost farm performance profitably will appreciate. By “TLC” the author of this article means “Tender Loving Care”]</i>

Treating your layer hens to a little TLC will mean delicious, golden-yolked eggs for your morning breakfast.

Back in the days before my layer flock came to enliven life on our farm, I would have picked the egg for sure—or maybe the egg carton. After all, the runny, pale-yolked eggs I cooked came from cartons sold at the grocery store, not from any chickens that I could see. My perspective changed, however, when I brought home our first fuzzy chicks, watched them grow into gawky pullets and waited—and waited—with bated breath for our first farm-fresh eggs to magically appear.

I eventually learned that not only did you first need chickens to have eggs (obviously), but to start getting eggs, you also needed your pullets to reach about 20 weeks of age. And to get an ongoing supply of good eggs, your chickens needed the right food, clean nest boxes, sufficient daylight and more. In other words, because an egg’s quality reflects the care and management the hen receives, getting good eggs takes some work—and not just on the chicken’s part. Take it from anyone who has ever kept a layer flock, the delicious results are well worth the effort.
