To Achieve Authentic Success You Need More Self Belief Than Looks!

Success in any area of life will come to you more frequently if you believe in yourself – unwaveringly – and show it.

The foregoing FACT becomes even more important to keep in mind if/when you have to start-up or run a business of your own. Few endeavours in life, are as challenging as having to take a business idea from zero to rewarding success.

In approaching people you want business from, you must come across as self-assured/confident and enthusiastic.

If you don’t, they will have a difficult time believing you can help them – and so will be wary of buying from you

I have “entertained” many friends, clients (and even prospects) with the story of how, back in 2007, I endured major humiliation one fateful day when I (mistakenly?) entered an office in Ikeja, here in Lagos, to introduce my custom spreadsheet software development service.

The owner of the company was so amused to hear me say I could develop low-cost and time-saving automated spreadsheet software for him using MS Excel, that he burst out laughing many times, as I spoke.

Eventually, he turned to someone seated next to him, and pointing to me said “Can you imagine him wanting to teach me Excel? I know more Excel than he knows! What can he possibly teach me?” Looking at me, with a mocking expression on his face, he said with a tone of finality “Anyway, I wish you all the best”.

As I left that day I had to muster all the courage I could, to avoid feeling depressed. I shook off the embarrassment of that experience, and continued my foot-solider-marketing (i.e. pavement pounding).

And it was a good thing that I did so.

Guess what happened? Before the end of that day, I had won a project to build a custom application for a medium-sized company in Omole Estate, Phase 1 in Ikeja, Lagos. And I went on to sell THAT same application to a similar company – also in Ikeja – less than ONE month after finishing it.

Looking back, I realise that it was the way I carried myself that often “won” over the clients. I always presented my offer in an engaging manner.

Apart from showing that I was excited about getting an opportunity to tell them what I could do to help them, I was also careful to employ very graphic verbal illustrations, that instantly communicated the benefits they wanted.

Most importantly, I NEVER let unsuccessful sales attempts from my past faze me one bit – every time I had a new opportunity to make my sales offers. Anyone who wants to succeed in selling to others will need to be able to do likewise or possibly better.

To Borrow Other People’s Money, You Need to Answer Their “WIIFM?” Question

This article offers you a unique opportunity to access practical wisdom shared by a successful entrepreneur about raising startup capital. It is based on my handwritten notes, from a seminar I attended in the year 2000 (24 months before starting my own business).

From my undergraduate days I have honed my skill at taking near verbatim transcriptions of speakers’ utterances! Even clients often compliment me on my knack for documentation.

In addition to the actual notes I took from the seminar, I have also included REAL-WORLD relevant comments and annotations on the subject discussed, by drawing from my 10 years of experience in applying the ideas in starting/running my own business in Nigeria!

The seminar was titled “How To Start Your Business With Little or None of Your Own Money” and facilitated by seasoned entrepreneur I will call S.O.

This article treats one of ten principles explained: “How To Get Other People To Give You Money To Start A Business (ONE Big Mistake You MUST Avoid)”.

It is instructive to note that this veteran entrepreneur told the personal story of when he started out in business, to explain to us the concepts he wanted us to understand in order to increase our chances of succeeding.

S.O told us that between December 1983 and January 1984 he read two of Napoleon Hill’s books – “Think & Grow Rich” and “Positive Mental Attitude”. What he learned from them prepared him mentally for the journey he planned to embark upon into the world of self-employment/business.

In February 1984, he had no one to give him money to start his own business even though they had it.

It took a while, but eventually, based on hind sight, he discovered the main reason why no one seemed to want to give him the money he needed.

It was due to a mistake he was making. Simply put, he was NOT addressing the issue of WIIFM translated to mean “What’s In It For Me?”

So he spoke a while to us on “How to get other people’s cooperation”.

Basically, S.O explained that you have to think of the interest of the other person. Ask yourself – “What do I give in return for the money?” and /or “How will the person giving his money get it back out of the business?”

In March 1984, he decided to put his idea of starting a business of his own on the back burner.

However, the decision by his then employer – a newspaper company (where he worked as editor) – to implement a 25% cut on staff salaries forced him to revisit the idea and eventually put in his resignation.

So, he converted his assets (mainly 6 professional cameras he used as a career sports journalist) to cash.

That got him N4,000.00 (Four Thousand Naira). Note that this was a significant amount of money back then in 1984!

S.O then went to an older friend/mentor, who without asking any questions gave him a N2, 500 cheque.

Summary

My experiences in trying to get money in my startup years, confirm S.O is right. Without offering WIIFM answers, people will either NOT help or they’ll STOP helping.

So, when you start planning to start your business, take time to THINK of useful benefits you will offer to those you intend approaching, in exchange for the capital, money or funds you need them to give you.

You could offer them a stake in the business – equity. Or promise to pay back at an interest rate attractive enough to make them feel justified in taking the risk to invest in your idea.

While making your offers and promises, be RESPONSIBLE – do not exaggerate the possibilities, and DO tell let them know the risks involved, as there will often be that chance that your idea might not get up and running instantly:-)

Very rarely will people be prepared to part with significant amounts of money, if they have nothing to gain in return for doing so. Cater to that identified need in people, and you WILL get ready cooperation from them most of the time.

Become A Leader At Work, By Making Your Company’s Decision Makers Take Favourable Notice Of You!

I don’t care how many management courses you have attended : management is and will always be a predominantly hands-on activity, that can only be fully mastered by DOING.

In other words, no matter what you learn through formal courses, until you get into the actual PHYSICAL act of managing people, operations and processes by yourself, you will not be able to develop any reliable proficiency in delivering results that will prove you worthy of career advancement opportunities in your organisation.

This article is meant for managers or employees who want to become leaders in the organisations they work.

YOU can do this by creating frequent and repeated opportunities for yourself to get considered or noticed for secondment – even promotion.

If that sounds impossible, let me assure you it is NOT: You just need to know how to go about it, which is something this article can help you learn.

Every Employee/Manager Wants To Get Promoted

Well, all kinds of people exist on the planet Earth, and they daily have different unique experiences that make them take decisions which may appear curious to others around them. So, I guess I could re-phrase the above heading a bit by starting it with “Under Normal Circumstances”.

By this I mean there is a possibility that someone, somewhere, may NOT (for reasons best known to him/her) want to get promoted from his/her current job position.

As for the rest of us, the phrase “Every Employee/Manager Wants To Get Promoted”, I am sure reasonably reflects expectations that a career minded person is likely to have – and many do actually have it.

However, the challenge for most people is often how to go about making their expectations become reality – and whether they can apply the sustained effort needed to succeed.

How does a supervisor or junior level employee get promoted to manager’s status? What will s/he have to do to be considered competent, by decision makers, for elevation to such a position in the organisation?

What will it take for YOU to get given that opportunity to relieve or replace YOUR boss(e.g the Technical Director about to go on leave or retire), having spent say the last ten years as head of your department, on what now appears to be a plateau in your career advancement path?

You, like any other person who aspires for career advancement, must consider these questions against the backdrop of information about the work to be done in the position you have set your eyes on, and the results expected to be delivered by the incumbent or post holder at any point in time.

I Successfully Used The Ideas Offered Here As An Employee – YOU Can Do The Same

This article offers very practical ideas, and somewhat unconventional thinking, about how any willing employee or manager can take personal action to regularly create opportunities for him/herself to win high profile career secondment opportunities and promotions in the workplace.

A lot of what I propose here is based on what I did(sometimes initially purely on instinct, until I made it a habit, having noticed the attendant benefits), quite successfully during my time in paid employment, and which I also observed others do equally – if not more – successfully. It also contains useful insights obtained from studies of the career lives of other persons who achieved significant successes as executives in high profile corporate organisations.

Six Practical Steps You Can Take To Get Favourably Noticed By Decision Makers

1. Forget What They Teach You In (Management) Courses:

Okay, maybe you shouldn’t “forget”, but don’t let it hold you back at work. (Management) School studies present issues in an orderly manner. Real-life situations often present themselves in the EXACT opposite way, even as they demand YOUR prompt action!
I suggest you identify individuals you look forward to relieving, and focus on studying what they do that makes them competent to occupy their positions. Also, read books based on real-life studies/true stories about successful career persons. Apply what you learn.

2. Remind Yourself Of Your Boss’ Expectations/Act On Them & She Will Tell Others:

Ask yourself what role you need to play to help him/her and the entire team, succeed. Do this often enough and you will soon be thinking like him/her(i.e. as it relates to getting the job done in line with legitimate requirements), sharing his/her concerns – and taking appropriate action to get the desired results.

It will only be a matter of time before s/he stops “worrying” about following up with you to be sure you’re doing what s/he NEEDS you to do in order that s/he might deliver the results management expects.

Evidence of this will reveal itself in how readily s/he leaves you in charge – justifying doing so to superiors if necessary – whenever there is a need for him/her to go away for long periods(e.g on leave, unexpected temporary re-deployments etc).

3. Demonstrate(And Act Based On) Keen Awareness Of The Company’s Priorities – And You’ll Get Noticed:

If you can work hard enough to understand WHAT is important to your boss/company, WHY it is important, and HOW you can do YOUR own job to help achieve those important goals, you WILL ALWAYS be a valuable member of the team.

Do this long enough, and s/he(plus “others” who watch) will be unanimous in recommending you for assignments or secondments to higher positions.

4. Master Your Area Of Interest Or Intended Activity – And Word Will Spread About You:

Your demonstrated competence on the job and proficiency in implementing related tasks will boost your chances of doing well when you get the opportunity to act in a higher position.

This is why you MUST work HARD on yourself – relentlessly. In addition, make it your number one priority to gain as deep an understanding/insight as the person you know to be BEST in each area you expect to be responsible for, if/when you go on secondment.

For instance, if there is a particular problematic machine whose performance determines how well your department will perform in terms of output, you want to find out ahead of time:

(1) What is required to keep it working with minimal stoppages?

(2) Who the best hand(s) is(are) to get it back in working order if it does stop working?

(3) What alternative options are available to you in the event that it REFUSES to work despite efforts to revive it?

Pssst: Here’s a secret.

Many times the old hands, usually in the lower cadres or rungs of the ladder know the answers you seek. Not because they have more education, but because they’ve been around so long, and seen so much of it happen again and again, with the benefit of also witnessing what solutions worked and WHO came up with them.

Get them on your side, and they will open doors of insider information/pockets of wisdom frequently inaccessible to persons unwilling to get down from their high-horses.

5. Always GTEM(TM)(i.e. Go The Extra Mile):

But Do It Intelligently. Going the extra mile when necessary, specifically to the extent that it helps achieve the organisation’s goals without incurring avoidable/unjustifiable losses or other negative consequences, will set you apart from the crowd.

Majority of employees typically do about enough to meet their obligations as employees.

And I don’t just mean resuming at exactly 9.00am and closing at 5.00pm sharp. GTEM(TM) goes beyond – or may not even include – exceeding normal working hours(which some people exploit to earn overtime pay, even though there was no reason to stay that long!!), to things like say…following up the phone call you made – 5 minutes to the close of YOUR shift – to the laboratory technician about the beer tank sample which needs to be IMMEDIATELY analysed so the bottling line does not run out of beer, in another half hour.

In this regard, it could in fact mean YOU stopping over at the laboratory, AFTER closing your shift/on your way out of the brewery, to get the result(confirming the beer is good for bottling) and reading it over the phone to the bottling hall operator so s/he can connect the new tank to the line and avert the impending line stoppage.

You would do this because you KNOW it is important to do all that YOU can to help the company team – which you are a part of – do well by meeting the set target output.

You would not do it out of fear that you could be blamed if you did not. (After all, technically speaking, it would not be you ON DUTY, if the lines stopped bottling because the results of the beer in the next tank for bottling are late in arriving!)

In otherwords, you would readily do necessary work to move the company forward regardless of whether you’ve closed for the day or not!

Your colleagues, reports and bosses will notice this selfless, team oriented behaviour, and decision makers will ultimately consider it a quality that gives you potential to succeed in a higher leadership position.

6. Show That You Are NOT Scared Of Taking Tough Decisions, Intelligent Risks And/Or Initiating Change.

Collin Powell once said “Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off.” To convince decision makers that you can hold important positions, you MUST show that you can take needed decisions/actions – regardless of who is affected.(This of course does not mean you would be insensitive to the needs and feelings of others).

Also, you must not suppress your creative instincts in doing the things outlined in 1 to 5 above. Successful companies know their progress depends on periodically re-inventing themselves internally and externally.

That’s why they value people who DEMONSTRATE that they have the guts to break from established traditions, to develop new ways of thinking and doing things – which inevitably equip the company to better pursue its goals.

Actively(and responsibly) explore opportunities to introduce useful change. Sometimes your instincts will tell you the recommended “way” will not yield the best results, and a different solution would pop into your head.

If you have worked hard enough on yourself as suggested above, you will KNOW when it would be right to follow YOUR instincts. Anytime you feel that way, DO IT! When you succeed, the news will get around.

Sometimes you may not succeed :-).

But that would not be bad. You would have learnt something useful. If your boss is smart, s/he will acknowledge you for taking a decision that required courage. Decision makers could even take that to be evidence that you have the makings of someone who can lead others/occupy higher positions(YOUR desired goal)!

Summary

If you were to take all that I have said here and summarise it in ONE single sentence, it could be something along the following lines: If you want decision makers to give you MORE frequent opportunities for career advancement, work hard, but responsibly, to DO THINGS that will GET YOU FAVOURABLY NOTICED by them.

By “thing”, I mean what you will do that helps the company move forward, even as it also makes you look good, BUT as much as possible, without deliberately making any other person(s) look bad.

If you can do that successfully, your organisation’s leaders will show their faith in you, by repeatedly demonstrating (through choices they make) a preference for you, over others who may otherwise be considered equally talented, qualified or competent.

Understanding How Ruminant Livestock (Like Cattle) Digest High Fibre Feeds

Many of us know (or have heard) about the ability of a group of animals called Ruminants to digest cellulose which we, and other non-ruminants would be unable to utilise in our own nutritional systems.

This article provides a brief insight into the features possessed by ruminants, and the complex processes that occur within their bodies, to enable them perform that unusual feat, seemingly without making any noticeable effort.

1. Ruminants do not have any incisors on the upper jaw, but instead have a dental pad.

However, they do have molars on both jaws.

When a ruminant swallows its food, it does very little chewing and the first place the roughage goes is the RUMEN, where bacteria and protozoa (microorganisms or microbes) produce enzymes to digest the cellulose and protein in the plant.

2. The food is later regurgitated by the anti-peristaltic movement from the rumen back to the ruminant’s mouth where the animal then “chews the cud” i.e. gives the food a thorough chewing which further breaks down the food.

Each mouthful of “bolus”, or mass of “ingesta” is thoroughly chewed and swallowed again, before another mass is regurgitated from the rumen. This process continues until the mechanical breakdown of the fibrous feed is completed.

3. The ingestion is passed into the RETICULUM and OMASUM where these parts of the stomach aid in the physical breakdown of coarse plant parts, that may have escaped the chewing which takes place in the rumen.

4. Finally, enzymatic breakdown (by digestive juices secreted from the wall of the abomasum) occurs in the abomasum which is similar to the stomach of the non-ruminants.

Babatunde Raji Fashola has been hailed both locally and internationally, for achieving unprecedented success as Lagos State Governor.

Little wonder Lagosians had no problems voting Fashola in for 2 consecutive terms, with many either wishing he could stay longer as governor, or be supported to contest for election into office as President.

In other climes, that latter option (Fashola contesting for the Presidency) would have been a logical next step

But this is Nigeria, where logic often takes time to sink in, and register.

The above notwithstanding, we have a viable and complementary alternative to Fashola, in the person of General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB). The best part is that Fashola, as well as others who think like him, in and out of government, agree that GMB should be our next President.

Since we already know Fashola is trustworthy, reliable and competent – with good reasoning capabilities to boot – it only makes sense to follow his lead in choosing our next President – especially if we want to see and experience real progress.

In the chequered history of our nation, GMB and the late Tunde Idiagbon set a record for setting clear ambitious goals that they achieved within the short 20 month or so stay they had in office

They were not perfect, but they were effective and the results they got made useful impact in the lives of the masses.

There was aversion for crime, indiscipline, corruption and many other vices. Smart handling of key aspects of the economy also ensured our currency stayed strong. And our debt burden was diligently investigated and reviewed, after which an agreed plan was resolutely followed to reduce it.

Mistakes were made in a few areas, and with a few innocent people. Yes. But they got most of it right, and back then the Nigerian on the street could see, and feel it!

That’s why even though Facebook did not exist back then, most people who experienced that period are still able, over 2 decades later, to speak with specific details about what was achieved by GMB!

Simply put, in his brief tenure as Head of State and Commander In Chief, GMB tamed a wayward Nigeria

If we’re honest with ourselves, we, today, as a people and nation once again need taming. Not all of us, but certainly an unprecedented majority.

I strongly believe the best qualified and best equipped person to tame the wild among us, while simultaneously working to improve our fortunes, without breaking his stride is GMB.

He’s done it before, and everything we’ve heard about his personal conduct since he left office confirm he still has the strength of character to do it again.

And he certainly wants to – this being his 3rd attempt to get elected to do it. Read and feel the passion in his words:

“Allow me prove to you that in your lifetime, you can be proud of this country. Let me make you this promise today: We will protect your children. We will protect your wealth. Today, we keep seeing Facebook photos and videos from the nation’s goverment, that show progress that has supposedly occurred right where we and our loved ones live and work. Yet we struggle to see, talk less feel, most of it!

That’s “GOVERNMENT MAGIC” (apologies to Fela) – and we must reject it!

I’d rather go for the real thing, not the more you look the less you see. I want real change and tranformation in my life and those of my kids and fellow citizens, not endless promises and rebased achievement numbers that do not impact me positively.

That’s why i’m voting GMB. If you want the same things I’ve stated above, I urge you to vote GMB as wefl, and tell others why they need to do so too!

I believe it’s time I embraced my God-given gift for helping people in this manner.

The achievements I’ve recorded in life, since those troubled early years, are based on corrective guidance received from my parents and other well meaning adults while I was growing up.

I built on the hard lessons of my past, and applied the principles and philosophies I learnt by studying books like Think & Grow Rich.

That has helped me record successes in virtually every area of endeavor I’ve ventured since then – with support from the Creator.

And every step of the way, my resolve to continue being a source of pride to my parents has never wavered. Neither has my passion to continue being an exemplary role model parent in the life of my kids.

No. 178: To Achieve Marketing Success at Low Cost, You Need a List of Potential Buyers

The more I “data-mine” my website mailing LIST of subscribers, and some actually go ahead and buy my products/services (sometimes years after signing up), the more I tell other business owners this:

“The money is IN the LIST”!

Curious to know what I mean? Keep reading then!!

Incidentally, I first read that phrase (“The money is in the list”) above 10 years ago, in an article written by an American Internet Marketing expert (his name misses me now), who pointed out the importance of channelling ALL of one’s marketing efforts towards BUILDING a list of potential buyers.

Even with established brands, sales rarely happen instantaneously!

It’s funny how some business owners, when they have to buy from others, act the exact same way their own target audience do, and yet, they forget to THINK the same way when they want to sell.

Let me explain.

I suffered the same affliction for years as a start-up. To find a way out, I read widely, and paid attention to what I was doing, based on what I read, until I identified where I was going wrong.

In trying to sell a service or product, the typical business owner, confident that s/he offers “good quality” simply announces to a potential buyer, that it’s available, (wrongly) expecting the other part to readily believe him/her!

Imagine a public speaking training service provider, who starts posting Facebok page status updates of his products descriptions and prices, with little or no other details to help prospects make up their mind(like the example below):

E.g. “Attend my 2 day workshop of Public Speaking –and become a Star Speaker earning 6 figure speaking fees in no time. Pay <amount> to <bank account number>. Then Send SMS to <phone number> with your bank teller details.”

The question is why should anyone believe s/he can do this for them?

Except a prior relationship exists, most people would have difficulty BELIEVING such a promise, especially when there are others who offer something similar (and there are countless others who offer public speaking training with promises of all sorts)!

Unless his name is Burt Dubin (renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid speakers), the above expert needs to give aspiring speakers a GOOD reason(s) to BELIEVE that he can deliver what he promises.

Even if he publishes a list of events at which he has spoken, along with raving reviews/testimonials from attendees at his speaking events, it may not be enough to win majority of the target audience over.

In fact, he could publish a lot of testimonials with photos, to support his claims that may still NOT convince majority to take him up on your offer.

Why?

Well, it’s because many others who offer similar solutions do the same thing…and the prospect has limited means to verify their claims!

Don’t get me wrong though. The above listed steps could make some people come forward to contact you and even enrol for his program.

However, they may do so with a tentative disposition – to give him a try and see how it goes…

In other words, they may not come in with a readiness to confidently invest in what he offers, based on a firm conviction that he can solve their problem (which could mean fewer sales for him).

To make potential buyers take a full leap of faith to trust you, and make big purchases, FIRST “build a relationship” with them!

That’s the key to selling profitably in any field.

Trust is crucial for making sales, as well as for earning repeat business, and word of mouth recommendations.

The process of building relationships helps to EARN trust in the minds of potential buyers.

That’s why my experience based recommendation is that you minimize giving  “come and buy” invitations, and instead focus on putting out information and education, likely to be considered VALUABLE by your target audience via as many channels as possible!

The best way to do the above at low cost, quickly and with little effort, is by implementing an intelligent Web Marketing System (WMS), as I conceive it – click to view mind map.

Your WMS will make those who encounter your work, over time, “feel” pulled to reach out to you. If properly setup, the WMS will ensure such people rarely leave without dropping their contact details with you, with permission for you to reach out to them in the future.

Every time that happens, you add to your list of potential buyers, and will then be able to take the relationship to the next level, by following up with more useful information, laced with attractive sales offers.

Over time, if you deliver good quality in the content you send out to those on the list, they will come to see you as a valued/trust advisor, indeed an authority, at what you do. For each person, the process will happen at different rates – they will NOT all arrive at that reckoning at the same time. This is not batch production of beer or poultry!

What is however certain is that once they arrive at that stage of conviction, about you, they will be more willing to BELIEVE you can deliver on ANY promise you make to them.

This is why, for those of us who have mailing lists of prequalified prospects (or potential buyers) selling tends to be a most fulfilling experience for both parties

Some of them run their own businesses part time, while still in paid employment. Others are still in full time employment. A few a 100% self-employed.

Final Words: If you run a business, you CAN get the same benefits of selling more via YOUR own mailing list!

We all know it’s EASIER to sell to people who already know you.

But that does not mean you should go chasing down you friends and relatives…

Indeed, many times, you’ll find that few of them fit your target audience profile, and most would NOT make good clients!

That’s why I recommend, in this article, that you cost-effectively make potential buyers who often start as strangers, get to KNOW you well, till they can confidently buy from you.

Well begun they say is half done and hence the need to ensure a good start for chicks (broilers or pullets) in order to be able to realize their genetic potentials and of course optimum profit for farmers.

The commercial poultry farmer is interested in optimum performance of his birds, which would in turn lead to maximum profits. The best time to express this concern in the care of the birds is during the brooding period. Many farmers do not pay attention to the details until the birds are matured – by which time dramatic interventions have become rather late. With birds (as with other things in life), well begun is actually half done.
