Diligence Beats Following the Rules! (True Stories About 4 Famous People)

In this week’s issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter, I offer excerpts that I personally transcribed (inserting sub headings in relevant sections) from the audio clip of an edition of the Speaker Match Radio Series titled “Success Strategies for Speakers from the Pros”.

The host – Bryan Caplovitz – interviewed Burt Dubin – a 25 year veteran mentor of highly paid international speakers, on the theme: “What They Don’t Teach You at Speaking Business School”.

Burt tells four (4) powerful true stories to explain how diligence (which is often NOT taught at speaker schools), when employed by an individual in pursuit of a valued goal, can result in notable success.

NB: The Speaker Match Radio Series is described by Bryan Caplovitz as a live show where top experts from the Speaking Industry and business are interviewed to provide emerging speakers with marketing strategies and other business building advice. While listening live, you can participate in the call online by going to Speakermatch.com/radio. Learn more at www.speakermatch.com.

Click to read the post - 10 Valuable Lessons I Learnt About Blogging for Passive Income, from Yaro Starak’s 60 Minute Podcast Interview with Patrick Meninga

Patrick Meninga achieved fame as a blogger by building a $2,000 a month adsense website while doing a full time job, and then selling it for $200,000.

Between 6th and 7th March 2013, I spent over 12 hours typing out a 20 page verbatim transcript of Yaro’s wonderful 2012 podcast interview for my personal use. Then it struck me that others could find it useful as well.

So I’m distributing this free PDF eBook version, which begins with an article that discusses twenty-one (21) lessons I distilled from listening repeatedly (for a cumulative period of over 24 hours) to the interview.

I’ve published a blog post based on excerpts from my 21 lessons article from the ebook. It’s titled “10 Valuable Lessons I Learnt About Blogging for Passive Income, from Yaro Starak’s 60 Minute Podcast Interview with Patrick Meninga“.

Bryan: So let me just try and get a little bit more from you about this you know, the tenacity and what else is needed . So we’re talking about what they’re not telling you in speaking business school.

Burt: Exactly!

Bryan: In the speaker school they’re telling you that oh you need to get a demo CD, and you need to get a list of people to go after. You know you need to do the standard things to build your business. Ehm I guess it’s the tenacity part of it is just being willing to go out there and do what it takes to get those meeting planners on your side and to figure out everything there is to know about the business.

Talk a little bit more about what you really need to have in order to make this work. I’m assuming that most people that are trying to start a speaking business, at least have the skill to speak in front of an audience.

So, once you have that, what else do you need?

Burt: (Exhales.) Diligence. Let me talk to you about diligence.

Story 1: Jan Vermeer Painted Light

Some of our listeners may not have heard of Jean Vermeer (click to see his paintings, biography and quotes). He was a painter during the renaissance. And Jean Vermeer did something that all the painters of his time knew could not be done. And even today, no one has been able to what he does. And you can find his paintings in the great museums of the world. JV working diligently, discovered how he could paint light…L.I.G.H.T.

Look up some of Jean Vermeer’s paintings, wherever you can find them in art books or whatever, and you will see that I’m telling you the truth,. . No one else of his time could do it. And as far as I know, no one to this day could it. He did it with relentless diligence.

Story 2: Colonel Sanders Started Kentucky Fried Chicken, While Living On Social Security

I will give you a second example. Colonel Sanders (click to read biography). Harland Sanders. (Exhales.) When he was 65 years old, older I’m sure than many of our listeners, living on social security, he had nothing, but diligence and a recipe for Kentuck …for what he called Kentucky fried kitchen.

And he talked abut 11 herbs and spices which you can find in any kitchen cabinet. And he went around in the country in his old beat-up Volkswagen, the early Volkswagens from the early 1950s if you remember, trying to persuade restaurant owners to offer and to produce, in a pressure cooker actually, what he called his Kentucky Fried Chicken. He persevered for years, and finally broke through, and the only reason he broke through – this 65 year old man living on social security – was he was relentlessly diligent.

Now I have a Col Sanders story. A true story. I lived in the valley, San Fernando Valley. And Colonel Sanders lived in Encino I believe. That’s the valley too. I was in North Hollywood.

He drove a big Chrysler, the Chrysler Imperial. I drove a Plymouth. And twice in my life I pulled into the Chrysler agency in Van Nuys, by chance directly behind Colonel Sanders! Him in his Big Imperial and me in my (laughs) used ehm Plymouth.

And I watched him as he interacted with the service representative, in that white suit with the polo ties looking exactly like his pictures if anyone remembers those pictures.  He was so so courtly, so gentlemanly, so kindly, ah so gracious, and I had a chance to see him in real life – not on television, not on stage.

However, and that’s how he became in his older life.

Something else about his older life many people don’t know. The last 20 years of his life, Colonel Sanders, the purveyor promoter of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Col Sanders was a vegetarian.

Bryan: Really?

Burt: Now few people know that. But keep in mind he wouldn’t have gotten there, had he not been diligent.

Story 3: Sylvester Stallone – Got the Rocky Movie Made Despite Countless Rejections

I will give you a third story. This is a story written by and acted out by Sylvester Stallone. The film was called Rocky. I don’t know how many of you know this, Sylvester Stallone was indeed a film writer many years ago.

He came up with this story called Rocky, went to peddle it to the studios and was told by all of the major studios they wouldn’t have it. Finally one said “Okay we’ll have it and we’ll create the stars”. Stallone said “No! If you want this picture, I star in it”. Well needless to say that was the original Rocky picture. There have been 7 of them now I believe. Something like that.

Diligence. Diligence. Diligence. None of these 3 people. Not Jan Vermeer, not Colonel Sanders, not Sylvester Stallone would have made it without diligence.

Story 4: Burt Dubin Relentlessly Endured Rejection 24 Out of 25 Times, to Win Speaking Gigs

Let me now tell you Bryan about my version of diligence. Let me get the time in California, I would get up at 4 in the morning. That’s 4 a.m California time  I’ll spare you what I did between 4 and 5. By 5 a.m I was at my phone making my east coast calls relentlessly Monday through Friday.

And as ehm…That’s 8 a.m east coast. And most decision makers for meetings are at their desks by 8 a.m. The whole idea is to get them early in the morning, while their day is fresh, before they have a million things on their mind. It was this kind of relentless diligence, being rejected 24 out 25 times, that remains the percentage these days.

24 out of 25 well placed phone calls, to decision makers with the budgetary discretion, the ability to hire you, the budget to hire you, and the need for what you can do, do not succeed, you fail: The 25th one you will make it!

That is not just my percentage. My numbers. Others in the business, including some CPAEs, top speakers, report that percentage too.  It’s a number game. That’s the way this business is. Relentless diligence, and you will absolutely make it.

Diligence is More Important Than Following the Rules

Bryan: It sounds like you’re also saying that diligence is much more important than following the rules? From some of the examples you gave, those people didn’t necessarily follow the rules for lets say how to start a restaurant…

Burt: Absolutely! You just…we go right back to being a bulldog! Relentless commitment that nothing, but nothing is going to stop you.

10 Valuable Lessons I Learnt About Blogging for Passive Income, from Yaro Starak’s 60 Minute Podcast Interview with Patrick Meninga

This is an excerpt from my new ebook, which includes my 20 page VERBATIM text transcript of Yaro Starak’s 29MB podcast – with headshots and time stamps.

Patrick Meninga achieved fame as a blogger by building a $2,000 a month adsense website while doing a full time job, and then selling it for $200,000. Between 6th and 7th March 2013, I spent over 12 hours typing out a 20 page verbatim transcript of Yaro’s 2012 interview for my personal use. Then it struck me that others could find it useful as well. So I’m distributing this free PDF eBook version, which begins with an article that discusses twenty-one (21) lessons I distilled from listening repeatedly (for a cumulative period of over 24 hours) to the interview.  You can request a FREE copy of the new ebook by sending me email via tayo at tksola dot com. Please share it freely with others!

1. BEING NEW TO BLOGGING IS NOT A FATAL HANDICAP

Patrick explained that he had been using the web, but not to earn income. He made it clear that his journey involved a lot of trial and error – a “Hit and miss” approach. He stressed that he did not know what he was doing . But he persisted and learned. But you’re lucky. We all are! Patrick’s formula is reproducible, and now documented in various formats for us to consult. With diligence, your journey should take less effort, time, and yield faster rewards.

2. LACK OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP EXPERIENCE CANNOT STOP YOU

Patrick noted that he had never run a business prior to starting his blogging venture. But he had a deep hunger to make a success of the business. He wanted freedom from “needing” a day job. So as the blog showed more promise, his determination to make it work grew as well, and he soon became an entrepreneur! The fact that you’ve never done business before should not stop you from doing this.

3. A FULL TIME DAY JOB CANNOT STOP YOU

Many people work day jobs and after closing, spend the rest of the day “resting” or “relaxing”. Patrick made smart use of his after work hours. He locked himself in and consistently wrote new content for his site: for well over a year. Then when he saw real income earning potential, he redeemed his accumulated vacation time, and pushed himself to the limits – churning out 25 articles per day! I’ve NEVER done more than 6 articles in one day (at 600 to 1000 words each). Patrick’s achievement tells me I can do better. And so can you.

4. FIND A GOOD MOTIVE OR REASON

For many people, the reward of earning money is enough reason to start blogging. However, in Patrick’s case, his personal experience with drug addiction and how to beat it drove him. It kept him going even when income and traffic was not so encouraging. Find your own reason, and use it to challenge yourself to succeed.

5. GOOD WRITING AND TYPING SKILLS WILL GREATLY BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY

To type 3,000 word articles in 2 to 3 hours like Patrick says he does, will definitely require above average typing and writing competence! So, check yourself. How well do you write? How fast can you type – without errors? Improve your writing and typing skills. Get self study materials, if you’re good at self-tutoring. Otherwise, enroll for classes. Or find a coach to help you with either or both. They are not the same by the way: You could be a good writer, and have poor typing skills. Get it?

6. FORGET WEB DESIGN: WORDPRESS WILL DO. IT’S YOUR CONTENT PEOPLE WANT!

The days when “pretty” websites with drab content reigned are long gone. Today, websites must offer useful content to get – and hold – the attention of search engines, and their click-happy visitors. WordPress is a powerful all-in-one Content Management System used by millions worldwide. It lets even a novice get a dynamic and database driven website up and running within minutes. And best of all, it allows you to focus on the most important tasks e.g. creating what Yaro calls “Pillar Content”. Patrick also calls it “Epic Content”.

7. YOU’LL HAVE TO DO THE WORK – NO OVERNIGHT SUCCESS STORY HERE

Patrick’s narration of his journey showed clearly that it would be unrealistic to expect quick success in blogging for passive income. You’ll have to do the work, monitor the results you get, tweak things here and there as necessary, until you start getting the kinds of results you want more consistently. But you’ll have to give it time – be patient. If you’re in a hurry to start seeing big money, this is probably not the kind of business you want to do!

8. MINE YOUR STAT LOGS FOR GOLD

Patrick talked about the data mining he did that led him to discover how people visiting his website were finding him. Not just that, but by forming a habit of reviewing his stats logs, he identified search strings and long tail keywords that were bringing his website up in search engine results pages. Patrick actually said he wasn’t even using Google analytics at the time, and that all he had was the “stats counter”. I found this quite interesting. It’s like a simplified version of keyword research, but effective. And I’ve resolved to begin checking mine and using what I learn from it, in addition to anything Google analytics gives me. I expect that just like Patrick, I should be able to find out what’s keyword strings are bringing me visitors, and use then to write new posts.

9. WRITE FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES

I think this is really important. Most of my writing is experience based. And I’ve gotten great results for it. It’s actually easier, than when you try to write based on abstract concepts or ideas. Patrick said he “knew the material” and had many ideas that were not mainstream. Every human being is unique. That’s why writing from experience is the best way to stand out. “Boring” content drives visitors away!

10. BUILD LINKS PROFILE USING GUEST POSTING

Patrick built links to his website by doing guest posts on blogs he identified in his niche. He also did article marketing via Goarticles.com and Ezinearticles.com. Explore other options to boost the links profile – and ranking – of your website. However, you’ll probably get the best/ multiple returns for your time or effort by focusing on guest blogging in particular.

Your Child Needs to Decide What She Wants In Life

What would it take to have one’s child grow up and become a sports superstar, like Michael Jordan or a famous personality like Larry King? History has shown that it is possible to deliberately coach children, from a very early age, to develop their unique skills and talents towards excelling as adults. The Williams sisters in tennis and the Jackson 5 are two examples that readily come to mind. And it is also worth noting that at least one parent provided the driving force and the direction for the children to follow until they arrived.

Help Your Child Choose The Right Life Goal

As a parent I dream daily of seeing my children actualize their full potentials as adults, to become the best they can be. They may or may not become famous, but I’d like them to live their lives in a manner that will enable them command the respect and admiration of those they relate with.

But just thinking or dreaming won’t do any good. Reading the stories of the growing up years of the Williams sisters for instance, it’s clear that their father played a great part in preparing them to mount the world professional women’s tennis stage and begin to dominate it. Years of back breaking hard work were invested until they were ready.

You don’t of course need to set a goal as grand as winning Wimbeldon titles for your kids. But you do need to work with them to identify challenging ones they would like to achieve.

To do this successfully, you must have spent quality time with each one, to know what interests her or gets her juices flowing.

Make Sure You Help Them Push Their Dreams, and NOT Yours

Parents can sometimes let their emotions cloud their judgement where the child has to decide what she wants to be in life. That’s why some individuals become adults and then suddenly undertake a radical career change to pursue alternatives they are more comfortable with.

The above is a major reason why trying to live out our fantasies through our kids will not work. Neither will attempting to use them to correct mistakes we feel we’ve made in the past.

The best thing to do is to carefully nurture the creative talents and abilities we identify in each of our kids, and show them how to improve over time.

Be Patient!

Coaching one’s kids to develop their unique talents and abilities can however be easier said than done.

That’s because it can literally take years before the work done begins to yield results – depending on the specific area of endeavour.

What’s more, if you’ve ever had to coach a child in a real world situation, you’ll know that unless she’s really interested, it can get quite frustrating.

But that’s not even the main problem.

The major challenge is that kids tend to have short attention spans and rapidly shifting interests.

So today, they could be excited about one subject or activity, and then one week later they’d have moved on to something else. Only with time will they gradually discover where their passions truly lie.

Final Words

Your role will be to guide your kids through the above mentioned process.

How well you do so will likely determine the results they get. If you do badly, they’ll probably end up as confused and dissatisfied young adults.

Nothing focusses the mind better than clarity of purpose.

Which is why once a child achieves a firm understanding of what she should be doing to actualize her full potential, she may never need help in that area again.

So, that’s the stage you need to get your child to in life. Once there, it will be up to her to make the most of the opportunites that appear, or that she creates!

To Succeed, Treat Even a “Demotion” As a Good Thing

Imagine you get a letter from your boss notifying you of management’s decision to temporarily redeploy you to a position that’s about 2 steps below your current management grade? If you’re like most people, you’ll most probably interprete such a career move as a demotion. This article presents a different perspective that you can adopt to achieve noteworthy career success.

Beware: Career Advancement Opportunies Can Come Your Way Disguised As Setbacks

Many people tend to measure progress only in terms of increases, positives, forward motion, upward movement and so on.

There is however a saying that sometimes one has to go backwards in order to move forward.

With regard to the seeming demotion highlighted above therefore, things may not always be what they seem.

Especially in companies that understand how to develop employees’ talents by deliberately exposing them to competence building on-the-job experiences.

Your company could plan such a temporary move for you into a lower position, if it believes gaining hands-on experience there will help you acquire knowledge, skills, information and insights that would make you more productive at a higher decision making level.

Certain Jobs Require Indepth Understanding of The Processes involved In Other Jobs

One example: To effectively manage the packaging department in a manufacuring company, a Factory Manager will often need to be familar with the procedures and processes carried out in, say the “Product Storage and Distribution” section for instance. Without this, her planning and decision making could end up being faulty, with costly consequences.

Let’s say you’re already on a grade senior to the Distribution Manager’s but below the Factory Manager’s.

If management has plans to make you the next Factory
Manager, and they feel you do not know enough about the Distribution section, that could make them decide to send you there as acting Distribution Manager, so you can gain needed hands on experience.

The company management may however not let you know their reasons or plans. And that would be normal.

What You Need To Do

Like I’ve said in past articles, except you’re convinced that the decision makers are not sincere, you are better off always giving your best performance at work, regardless of how you feel about a particular deployment or appointment.

Most times the interests of the organisation will be put first, and that could require your seeming “demotion” to get you to be more competent to take on bigger roles or higher responsibilities.

All you need do is maintain a positive mindset, and do any job you’re given as best as you can. Note that each time you successfully complete an assignment, it will mean you’ve become more competent than you were before.

In the long run, you’re likely to reap useful rewards in form of valuable career advancement opportunities that are likely to come your way.

Cheating Denies You The Opportunity to Improve Yourself

Tough times can be blinding. Hardship can be traumatizing. When things are not going the way we want, we humans, despite our high level of intelligence, can be so quick to forget the good times that preceded any bad ones that emerge. And so we complain and whine, asking “why me?. Those who feel they can no longer cope eventually decide to cut corners to escape further adversity.

Many Have Heard That Hardship Presents An Opportunity to Grow

You’ve most likely heard or read the above in one form or the other in the past.

I’ve however discovered that despite encountering this truth, many people find it hard to accept.

And so they actively explore ways to get what they want in life without experiencing difficulty hardship.

That’s why we hear of athletes who use performance enhancing drugs…

Of students who, instead of reading, bribe their way to exams success…

Or blog/website owners who buy links to boost their search engine rankings even when they know Google considers it illegal.

What these people fail to realize is that they’ll always lose out in the long run.

People Who Cut Corners Hurt Themselves

Probably due to fear and anxiety arising from the harsh economic times, some people are giving in to the urge to cut corners in their personal and work lives.

Sometimes it’s because they have dependants to cater for.

But cheating and/or corner cutting can be intoxicating. Once you’ve fallen into the trap, getting out becomes difficult and will often require a rare brand of courage and determination.

Cheating denies you the opportunity to improve yourself. It makes you lazy, because psychologically you no longer feel pressured or challenged to exert or stretch yourself.

Over time you’ll discover you no longer have the hands on competence to match, or compete effectively with others who don’t cheat.

Your self confidence will suffer greatly, and you’ll become fearful that they’ll discover you’re not as competent as they think you are.

That the numerous articles getting churned out from your blog, which you claim to have authored by yourself, were actually written by a writer you secretely hired.

We know creating content on your blog will not necessarily be all you. It’s accepted that content can be purchased.

But when you begin telling others that you personally wrote content you know you purchased, that’s when you cross the line.

What You Can Do

Good times are unlikely to push people to cheat or cut corners. When things are going the way we want we don’t complain.

The only time we do that is when we don’t like what’s happening to us.

So the key to preserving your integrity, self respect and discipline is to stand firm. Refuse to compromise your values or integrity, no matter what happens.

Instead, dig deep and challenge yourself to find legitimate and honourable ways to overcome the bout of adversity.

In the short run it may look like an unwise move. But in the long run you’ll be better off. Indeed, if you’re sincere, you may be pleasantly surprised by a solution that could come to you. Your creator who sees your heart will provide a viable alternative for you.

Do You Have To Be Popular To Get Rich? (Case Study: Michael Jackson vs Warren Buffet)

“Quiet Success” vs “Loud Success”: Which Is Better? If you think that’s an odd question, bear with me as I explain. Generally, wealth acquired through creative endeavours (like entrepreneuring, sports, entertainment) are especially popular measures of success. In contrast, less widely followed avenues to success (like investing) can often be more lucrative, even as they require less “work”. Yet they get ignored by majority of society’s members seeking success. This probably happens because most people assume a popular endeavour will be more profitable than one which is not.

Very untrue!

How “Loud Success” Differs From “Quiet Success”

Let now clarify what I mean by the above mentioned terms.

Most adults today know the story of Michael Jackson’s success from his childhood days as a member of the Jackson Five (I’ve been a huge fan since I was old enough to think).

He was a child prodigy, the likes of which we may probably never see again. And he grew up to achieve mega levels of fame and success as an adult.

The world’s media showcased his massive talent till he became a household name, and probably the most recognizable musician worldwide.

I call that “Loud Success”.

“Loud” here is not used in a negative sense. It’s simply meant to indicate that the success achieved was widely publicised and followed by a large majority of the population.

In contrast to the above, most people around the world (who were aware of MJ’s growing success) knew little or nothing about Warren Buffet until well into his adult years, when he was declared one of the world’s richest men.

Even today, we rarely see or hear this man on TV or radio, as was the case with MJ.

To make money Mr. Buffet (unlike his musically gifted counterpart/fellow countryman) did/does not have to dance and sweat for hours under hot stage lights.

Crowds of fanaticals fans did/don’t follow him around screaming his name and pleading for autographs. We don’t have life size posters and pictures of him being briskly sold at various places.

Most interestingly, he is known for living frugally and giving away most of his wealth to charities and other causes.

And yet this man, Warren Buffet, is worth billions of dollars – more than MJ ever owned.

I call that “Quiet Success”.

“Quiet” is used here to indicate the considerably less popular nature of the route (i.e. investment) followed by this financial genius to achieve his own version of success.

(NB: I note here that MJ did get into the Guinness Book of records for his charitable giving. As an entertainer however, living frugally must have been difficult to do, even if he’d wanted to. Fame of the kind he had comes at a steep price).

A Career or Vocation Does Not Need to Be Popular to Be Profitable

Think about what I’ve said above for just one moment. I’m sure you’ll readily identify a few examples you know of, that validate my argument.

Human beings love to follow what’s considered by the crowd to be “trending”. Sometimes this can be good. But many times it can be a very unwise thing to do.

In “Gifted Hands”, his bestselling book, Dr. Ben Carson – the world famous brain surgeon – highlighted this problem with specific reference to the career choices being made by inner city African American kids.

He rightly pointed out how highly the odds are stacked up against those seeking success through playing sports without completing their education.

A lucky few make it, and those are the ones the media puts in our faces round the clock. What we often forget is that so many others who pursue success through this channel never make it to the big leagues where riches can really be had.

On the other hand, a sound education provides something to fall back on that you can exploit to build riches. It equips you to learn any vocation and succeed at it via persistence.

The only difference is that even when you begin succeeding, people may not pay you the kind of attention they devote to those in engaged in the popular vocations.

At least not while you’re yet to achieve a major breakthrough. That was the experience Ben Carson had.

But if you practice continuous improvement, and persist diligently (like he did), you’ll eventually achieve noteworthy recognition and success, with relevant financial rewards to show for it.

By way of interest, Robert Kiyosaki used a similar analogy in one of his books, contrasting Bill Gates’ route to success, with Michael Jordan’s relatively “louder” journey to success.

Final Words: Which Is Easier Or Better?

Regarding which type of success is “easier” to achieve, I believe it’s a matter of personal perspective.

Judging from my experiences, the difficulty of any task depends mainly on the perspective of the individual who has to carry it out.

Many times a task one person considers difficult (because he does not enjoy doing it), could be seen by another (who loves doing it) as easy.

It’s the same thing in business. And that’s why we’re advised to choose careers or vocations that we have a natural interest in or flair for.

As for which is “better”, I’d say for most people, the less popular route that leads to quiet success will probably prove more rewarding in the long run.

Of course, nothing stops any adequately motivated person from exploring both channels.

You could for instance try out first for success in a “loud” or popular vocation, and if unsuccessful switch to the less popular alternative.

Ultimately, your choices and decisions should be guided by a sound understanding of the distinctions between the two routes to success discussed here.

That will help you strike an intelligent balance in your pursuit of emotionally fulfilling, financially rewarding, and long lasting success.

What If a TV Reporter Requests To Interview YOU Live?

Can we ask you a few questions?“. What if the foregoing question was suddenly directed at you at a formal public event, by a TV reporter holding a microphone, followed closely by a colleague with a camera?

A live interview (on an important subject in your area of expertise), right on the spot. No opportunity to collect your thoughts. No prior warning. It can happen to anyone – including YOU.

I know this because it’s happened to me – more than once.

It pays to know your subject. But it pays even better, to know how to speak in a way that attracts powerful opportunities for zero cost media exposure, like the one mentioned above. I share my personal insights on this theme, in this week’s issue of my public speaking ideas newsletter.

It Can Happen to You (A Real Life Example)

I love listening to the radio. Compared to television, I find it gives me more value for my time. Both media have always been useful for getting the word out about almost anything or indeed anyone. Only their rates can be prohibitive for most small businesses or solo entrepreneurs.

That does not however stop us from listening to, or watching them. And it certainly does not mean we cannot get useful exposure on either medium for FREE.

Have you ever considered that? Instead of listening and watching others on those media, YOU could be the one others listen to and watch!

It could happen anytime, in one of a number of ways.

For instance, a journalist could pick on you after an event you attended, in which you’d made useful contributions as a member of the audience.

That’s one way in which it’s happened to me.

She was from a national TV network. Their branded equipment made that obvious – even before she introduced herself. I’d seen them moving around taking pictures and recording since before the start of the event – at the popular MUSON (Musical Society of Nigeria) centre on Lagos Island.

The event was an anniversary lecture. The guest speaker had discussed reasons why Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria often struggled to succeed, and how they could make better progress.

He was eminently qualified, boasting an impressive resume that revealed he’d worked over 2 decades in private and public service supporting businesses with financial services. And he did a great job with his talk.

This subject was however one that I felt (and still feel) strongly about. So much so that I’ve written many articles about it. So, as I listened to the speaker, I readily identified specific action steps MSMEs were not taking, that I felt could boost their progress faster, if adopted.

Like I’ve always said in this newsletter, when you have an opinion that’s based on your convictions about an issue, do NOT keep it to yourself. And don’t wait to become the guest speaker at a formal event to say it either. Sometimes, voicing it from the audience stand can be just as effective. And it’s always better than saying nothing. What’s more it could get you invited to say more!

For me, especially based on my experiences from years operating as an entrepreneur in the same environment, I knew more MSMEs needed to stop waiting on the government or other bodies to solve this problem for them.

My long standing opinion has always been that we (Nigeria – and possibly Africa – based business owners and decision makers) collaborate and cooperate too little. Instead we compete needlessly when it would mutually benefit us to form alliances.

When the guest speaker called for questions from the audience, I wasted no time in raising my hand.

I spoke for just about one minute. Only 60 seconds.

But what I said during that short interval – and HOW I said it – derived from the passion I had for the subject. And I really wanted those listening to use the insights I offered to use. It was not an ego trip for me.

To get my message across, I illustrated with examples of my experiences in relating with other MSMEs owners as clients and associates. The real life examples (not surprisingly – at least for me anyway) resonated strongly with many in the audience.

So, after we closed I had a few people walk over to commend me, ask what I did etc. I believe the impact I made may have been one of the factors that made the reporter seek me out for that interview.

TV/Radio Presenters Who Speak Poorly?

That young lady was quite impressive in the way she went about it all. Her questions were intelligent and delivered in an articulate manner.

And that struck me as not so common these days. I mean out here in this part of the world. The quality of speaking one hears on radio/TV (and the writing in print publications) is not confidence inspiring.

There was a time when I listened to presenters on TV and radio out here, to learn new words, how to pronounce those I already knew – and even how to speak well. People like John Momoh (owner of the award winning Channels TV), in his days as a news presenter made listening to the news quite pleasurable – for me.

Not surprisingly, his TV station today stands out from others because the training given his presenters makes them deliver to a similar standard when they come on air.

Sadly, too many others seem to have stumbled into TV/radio presenting. It would not be so bad however, if they took action to improve themselves. Instead, these individuals routinely come on air to display a disappointing lack of fluency, and an appallingly limited vocabulary.

For example, apart from periodic incoherence, a good number punish listeners by “hmm-ing, ehm-ing and aah-ing” at random. Such distractive speech mannerisms make listening less pleasurable for any audience. (For many with this problem, investing in Public Speaking Training could be a wise move.)

And that’s why whenever I’ve identified a presenter with such limitations, I routinely tune to a different station (or turn off the radio/TV), when s/he comes on air.

The above digression was done to show that regardless of the highlighted fallen (or falling) standards, developing speaking proficiency is still a wise thing to do. Especially if you anticipate speaking on radio/TV, either as the interviewer or the interviewee.

Presenters May Have Time To Redeem Themselves: You May NOT!

But it’s not just journalists who need to hone their speaking skills. Those who have to be their “guests” – even for short interviews – will also find public speaking expertise helpful.

Many people who present TV and radio programs do so on a regular basis. So, for those who work hard to improve on the shortcomings I highlighted above, there’s a chance they’ll eventually overcome them, and make more useful impact on their listeners.

When YOU are approached for an interview by a reporter, YOU may NOT reasonably expect to get another chance. I don’t mean a situation in which you’re in your car or on the street, and someone asks you what you think about a trending topic.

Instead, I refer to a case where your expert opinion on a serious topic is sought by knowledgeable journalists who may feature it in a report to be aired on TV/radio: An excellent opportunity to achieve valuable name recognition, and more.

You can make make the most of it, or blow it. To do the former, you need to be prepared.

I assume you are a master of your subject. If you’re not, that’s the first problem you need to address – FAST. Once that is done, your public speaking proficiency will determine how well you do with a sudden “interview” opportunity (You could get quoted, and possibly invited for longer sessions).

Public Speaking mastery implies knowing how to manage fear, anxiety, and thinking on your feet, to competently address a formal audience, your area of expertise.

Are you comfortable doing that yet?

If you are, I propose you learn to do it even better.

If you’re not, I suggest you seriously consider getting public speaking training today!

How To Make Your Writing Effortless

Writing can be hard. I know this from over a decade of doing it as an entrepreneur. But I’ve learnt how to do it easily, almost effortlessly. I do it faster and better with each passing day. This article exposes the real reason why writing gets too hard for some people to continue. Read it to discover how to make your writing happen with less effort.

Writing Is Hard
Only When You Have No Reason For Doing It

I’ve sometimes worked with individuals of different ages and backgrounds, to help them develop a regular writing habit like mine in their areas of interest. Nine out of ten never made it.

They said it was hard. And they were right. But the funny thing was, that was not why they could not do it!

I think deeply about things a lot. And it’s helped me gain insights that have resulted in my ability to literally achieve any goal I set my mind upon in any area of endeavour – including writing.

Here’s what I learnt.

Writing, like any other challenging task or activity, will get too hard for you to continue doing only if you have no reason to keep at it.

Think back to your days in school. With few exceptions, most people endured the rigours of reading and writing endlessly, only because they wanted to earn their certificates and degrees. And not because they liked studying hard and taking exams!

You probably had moments in school when you felt you could not keep up. But the thought of disappointing your family may have kept you going. Or maybe you wanted to get qualified so you could get a good job and live in a big house, drive a fancy car…you get my drift I’m sure :-)

And that’s how most of us human beings are really wired. We need to have a reason to keep doing anything that requires us to exert ourselves on a regular basis.

Can You Find A Good Reason To Write?

If you’ve ever contemplated giving up writing, search yourself.

Do you have a good reason for wanting to write?

Are you considering the right topic or theme? One that you have a compelling reason to write on?

If no, then that’s why writing can be too hard for you.

I have many reasons for writing as if I’m possessed, or as if my life depends on it.

Those who live with me will tell you I sometimes keep reading and writing for 18 to 20 hours non-stop – without pausing to eat – if I have a deadline to meet.

The very thought of not finishing ahead of my target date or time drives me to work in that manner.

But actually, my underlying motive is not an obsession with deadlines. Instead it’s my desire to deliver results I promise my clients that motivates me.

Then again, that’s not my most important reason for writing with passion like I do.

I do so because I have an irresistable urge to share what I know with others who may find it useful.

I’ve learnt so much from reading what others who knew chose to share by writing. Over the years I’ve learnt that it’s important to do the same thing.

And since I began doing so over a decade ago, I’ve enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing my writing interest and help others. That’s in addition to having it repeatedly earn me substantial income.

All of the above serves to inspire me to do even more writing, and to improve my ability to do it.

Final Words: Find Your Reason & Start Writing With Ease!

When you find a compelling reason to do something, a magical thing happens.

You stop thinking about how hard it is – and you just start doing it. And you’ll keep doing it until you get the result you want. No matter how long it takes or how hard it gets.

So if you want to make writing easy for yourself, think deep and hard, to find a good reason to do it.

If you succeed you’ll never find writing too hard to do again.

Writing is the hardest work in the world. I have been a bricklayer and a truck driver, and I tell you – as if you haven’t been told a million times already – that writing is harder.  Lonelier. And nobler and more enriching.

Train Your Kids To Do Housekeeping Chores & They’ll Thank You For It

Proper upbringing of children across the world’s societies generally involves teaching them to uphold good values like truth, honesty and integrity. It also involves telling them the importance of putting family first, as well as being comfortable doing housekeeping chores.

Yes. You read that last part right: It is my experience based opinion that one of the wisest things you can do is to get your kids familiar with doing housekeeping activities.

I benefitted tremendously from that kind of home training, so I know it works.

What’s more, my eldest child who clocks 14 years in a few months also knows because I told him.

He is followed by 4 siblings : 2 boys aged eleven and nine, as well as 2 girls aged six and three respectively. They are all daily coached (the eldest three especially) by their mother and myself, whenever the opportunity arises, to carryout a wide variety of housekeeping chores.

Examples of what they are taught include, but are not limited to: washing their own clothes, sweeping the floor, cutting grass in the garden, fetching water from deep wells, even cooking.

Apart from empowering both male and female kids to be able to competently manage their own homes when they start living alone, such training will also prepare them to care for you, as their parent, in your later years, if/when the need to do so arises.

For the Sake of a Child’s Proper Upbringing, Hired Helpers Must Be Discouraged from Being At Her Beck and Call

We’ve seen it happen many times. The over indulged child whose parents raised to believe the world owes her a life of comfort and ease.

So she goes through life barking orders at hired hands who ordinarily are sometimes old enough to be her parents.

If by the time she leaves her parents’ home, her mentality remains the same, but she cannot find the means to sustain her priviledged lifestyle, she would end up resenting having to accept the sobering reality that life will not be a bed of roses.

It is at this point that frail minded kids sometimes derail into reckless living.

In contrast, kids who have been routinely tasked with character forming and skill building housekeeping chores are often likely to be able to dig deep when faced with a similar situation, till they achieve the goals they want.

The above often happens because the very act of regularly doing house work instills discipline, mental stamina, and a strong sense of responsibility in kids. That’s why I say it is potentially character forming.

When kids who have been raised that way have their own kids, they often ensure the latter get training similar to what they were given as kids.

Well Trained Kids Will Care for You In Your Later Years

Growing old can be a challenging experience for many adults, especially for those who led active lifestyles throughout the period of their youth.

For them, spending time sitting around doing little or nothing will rarely be an acceptable option. People like that may rebuff attempts to treat them like fragile or delicate beings. Not even when their own offspring make the offer.

I know one soon-to-be-eighty year old man who behaves exactly as described above

But his now grown up kids, being well trained, understand him and wisely avoid making offers he will reject. Instead when visiting, they focus on getting other chores or tasks done for him.

I happen to be one of them.

When we were younger and still living with him, he would sometimes send us out to help relatives and neighbours with various tasks and chores.

This happened due to the latter not having kids. Or in some cases their kids had not been taught to do such work.

Those experiences helped us appreciate the great value of the training and discipline he (and our mother) had instilled in us.

The above is why I believe the least I can do is to give my own kids similar training.

I suggest you make out time to do the same thing for your kids. It’s a good way to boost their chances of success in the real world.

If we really love them, deciding to do this will be easy.
