A few years back, I read an article by a female IT professional who is an internationally recognized speaker from Africa…but whose business is based in the UK. She was complaining about what she called a dearth of “Made-in-Africa” speakers. I agree with her…

Public Speaking is a powerful weapon for achieving high impact business marketing promotion. Compared to conventional marketing, it yields multiple benefits in terms of product sales, name recognition, brand building and more.

So why don’t MORE business owners in Africa use it?

A few years back, I read an article by a female IT professional who is an internationally recognized speaker from Africa…but whose business is based in the UK.

She was complaining about what she called a dearth of “Made-in-Africa” speakers.

I agree with her.

It is HARD to find experts-who-speak across Africa – at least not like you have them in other climes in all of the SAME fields we practice here!

IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m talking now about the experts-who-speak and NOT people who only function as professional “motivational speakers”.

We have fashion designers, we have lawyers, and we have doctors, restaurant owners, financial consultants, real estate professionals, farm business owners, IT professionals and many others in various fields.

Some are engaged in provision of services, others retail or wholesale products and some are manufacturers.

They can ALL use public speaking as a business marketing tool IF they know how!

But don’t get me wrong now. There’s nothing wrong with being a motivational speaker.

I’m just saying that this piece is more about people who are hands-on professionals (i.e. practicing professionals in their various fields) adopting public speaking to find more clients and/or earn more income.

My argument is that we need more of the skilled professionals like those mentioned above, to get into the business of public speaking.

That way they can kill two birds with one stone: they market themselves and at the same time they educate people and add value to them.

Professionals are typically people who are already equipped with experiences and knowledge that can add value to the lives of others in their areas of expertise.

Therefore when they deliver talks or lectures based on what they know, they can help their audience gain improved knowledge and insights to do what they do better.

Doing public speaking WILL give a professional MORE credibility.

It is for this reason that public speaking is a powerful tool that can be used anywhere in the world. Indeed, it has been used – for decades – across the world as a zero cost or very low cost promotional strategy.

For some strange reason not much of that (i.e. experts-who-speak) is happening in Africa.

It is my considered opinion that the main reason for the above is that many independent professionals and business owners are scared of speaking before a formal audience (even when it is ONE person they face), and they need help.

That’s why many of them are NOT very comfortable with the Sales & Marketing that needs to be done to ATTRACT a continuous stream of new buyers or clients for the solutions they offer.

To overcome that problem, they hire employees and push them out to do the marketing for them. Problem is very often those ones get little or no structured guidance on what to do/how, to boost their chances of success.

I am on a mission to help “experts” that are willing break that mental barrier and move to the next level in the productivity as business persons.

“…If you want to succeed, you have to start living the way I tell you in this audio…”

“…Take a look around you. Some people don’t even worship God. Some societies don’t even acknowledge God the way we do in Africa, and yet they flourish, because God’s rules are scientific.

The law of gravity is not just a spiritual thing, it’s a scientific thing. That’s why we’re able to build aircraft that fly – because we understand gravity, and how to defy it.

So there’s a science to everything. That’s why we’re able to create drugs that get us to be well, when we are sick. We understand the science of medicine!

So, God is a scientist, as he is spiritual, and therefore everything he does has a scientific basis.

You must therefore understand that there is a science to success. And that science to success, if you understand that science, you will understand that no human being can stop you from achieving any goal you want to achieve!

Your thoughts alone control what you can succeed at, and what you fail at. You are the one that determines your success or your failure.

Please keep this in your mind. Please remember this at all times.

If you know you really want to succeed in life, it is important that you know how to control your thoughts.

Without control of your thoughts, nature will not work for you, because nature was created by God, and nature depends on what you think, to know what to give to you.

Nature will send what you think to you. If you think negative, the negative will come to you. If you think mean, mean will come to you. If you think positive, the positive will come to you. If you think pleasant, the pleasant will come to you.

There’s a law of nature. You’ve heard about Karma.

If you haven’t heard about it, I just told you about it. Karma is what goes around comes around. It will bring to you whatever you do to others. If you send out evil, evil will come back to you. They are laws that are scientific and cannot be broken.

God is the one that set those laws. If you want to please God and get him to give you what you want, you have to obey those laws. It’s as simple as that…”

Whether you’re in business or paid employment, if you feel you don’t earn enough, starting a new business or changing jobs may be too risky.

I propose a SUPERIOR alternative used by millions worldwide, and which YOU can successfully adopt while still working full time.

What if you could continually “create” and sell a growing range of your very own BRANDED products to a worldwide audience? Even while you sleep? What if you could do this in a way that generates tangible income for you, over time, on a reasonably regular basis, with YOU being in 100% control? And what if you could achieve the foregoing (with money coming right in your pockets) even without having to quit your job?

Take your kids out to the beach, you do things …those are your free time!

They may not be more than 1 or 2 hours in day, maybe the weekends. You can use that free time in nurturing this business. You see, nature abhors imbalance. The Chinese talk of the Ying and Yang. You cannot take without giving. If you do, you create a vacuum that will eventually suck you in.

So, if you’re looking for success, be prepared to give something to get it.

Now, if you don’t want that, then please stop listening to this audio because I don’t have anything for you. But if you’re ready for that then what I’m trying to say is that you are about to learn a NEW way, NEW HABITS to earn income. And I’m saying that those habits do NOT require you to quit your job!

NB: By the way, if you’re thinking this is one of those autopilot schemes (or scams!)…IT IS NOT!

Indeed, to use this system I refer to, you WILL have to do what I do. And that is: Create the products/services that people will buy from you AND/OR or intelligently choose rebrandable ones available from others to sell.

Subsequently, you WILL have to invest QUALITY thinking time, and effort to make sales happen – EVEN while you sleep.

It’s NOT easy to do, but it can be done. I DO IT, and the good thing, for YOU, is that you will have ME to guide and support you every step of the way.

Imagine you were walking down the road and a haggard looking beggar, called out to you in PERFECTLY SPOKEN ENGLISH. Imagine s/he went on to state his/her request articulately, and in the manner of a person of fine education. Wouldn’t that make you hear him/her out? Or possibly do more?

In truth, most people would likely answer “YES” to my question. At the very least, even if you choose not to stop, there’s a good chance you’ll mention THAT beggar to the next “sane” person you meet.

That could be your friend, spouse or associate. It’s not something one sees everyday. It would STICK to your memory!

Dale Carnegie once wrote that a person’s diction can be his/her “passport into the best business circles“. He told the story of a man who secured a well paying job, with the help of a wealthy business owner, within 24 hours of speaking with the latter, even though he had walked in dressed like a tramp!

Carnegie’s “conclusion” could be rephrased for more “completeness” as follows:

“Your diction can be your passport to the best SOCIAL circles”.

I say this because my experiences and observations indicate that people love to listen to, and be associated with, a person who has a good command of their accepted or recognized language of communication.

And I must point out here, that what I’m saying is NOT limited to the use of the English language.

In Nigeria for instance, some radio, TV, print and other news media owners value hiring journalists, proficient in certain widely spoken local languages, such as Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa etc.

So, when there is a need to get valuable news stories from locals that are unable to express themselves in English, journalists with the ability to competently communicate with such “sources” tend to get better quality news reports in.

Over time, they get noticed by the BOSS …especially in crisis periods, when there is pressure on the media house to churn out latest updates ahead of competitors (Think Boko Haram terror bombings or kidnappings etc).If they continue to deliver, such individuals find themselves getting more face-time with those who matter. And their names get known. Their careers sky rocket.

In reality, sometimes, the guy who becomes the “local champion” – as described above – may not necessarily be “expert” at speaking the language.

S/he might just be the MOST (or the ONLY person) proficient or competent in the use of that language in the organization.As a result the responsibility for doing the “talking” naturally falls on him. Whoever is the formal “leader” in that social situation automatically has to reckon with this individual.

In other words. s/he gets noticed by the decision makers…AND the rest becomes history!

Lesson to Take Away: How good is your command of the language you have to use an expert in your chosen field?

Not just how well you speak it, but also in terms of how well you can read, and write in it (e.g. use of grammar and tenses etc), as well as how well you COMPREHEND it when others speak it to you?

If you’re not sure, get someone you trust to give you an objective assessment.

To help my clients, who I’m supporting to use Web Marketing Systems I develop for them, I’ve resolved to begin offering subtle (corrective) pointers and tips in this regard.

When a meeting planner looking to hire an expert-speaker reads an article riddled with errors of all kinds, it can throw him/her off so much that s/he loses the initial interest in the expert that wrote it. Especially if that expert’s demonstrated ability to use the language is an important criterion used by the meeting planner to invite speakers or hire experts.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve also put up writing with such errors. So, it’s not like I’m trying to claim perfection here.

However, making many such errors is farm from being the norm for me. Success is said to be a matter of percentages. We all make mistakes, and no one is perfect, but we all need to strive for perfection!

I do so: Everyday. Starting today. I’m re-inventing myself in this regard as well, so I can do even better!

To get taken seriously, by potential clients, you want to do the same: Make serious, and consistent effort to minimize errors anytime you SPEAK. Or when you WRITE – especially formally e.g. on your website, blog, even Facebook. Read through AFTER you’ve published and if you notice errors, correct them. Someone may have seen the error(s), but the next person will NOT, and s/he will at least go away with a better impression of you!

If a 3 decade veteran mentor of highly paid international speakers thinks the web can serve his needs that well, you should seriously consider using it for your own speaking business too!

Even if you are NOT a speaker, nothing stops you from doing anything else you feel is worthwhile offline, to complement your online efforts.

What is crucial is that you keep your marketing related expense of money, time, and effort LOW. The Internet offers the best opportunities to achieve that purpose.

To Win More Often In Life, Master The Art Of Non-Combative Confrontation (6 Tips to Follow & 3 Benefits to Reap!)

We are often told, as kids, to be respectful/obedient to older others. In some cultures, however, the indoctrination goes deeper, such that youths become adults unable to challenge “bad behaviour” by older persons or bosses.

This article offers insights anyone can follow to overcome such a limitation – including 6 tips on what to do, and 3 benefits to expect.

I have however found that it is best to always enquire “to whom” I should be respectful and obedient, to what extent, and for how long – and WHY.

As much as possible I try to do this without showing disrespect to those I ask, but I never let fear of reproach keep me from getting a satisfactory answer.

Here’s a question to ponder: Would it make sense – and be in your best interest – for you to CONTINUE being respectful and obedient to a boss, parent, or other adult who REPEATEDLY deliberately puts you down, or even abuses you?

Are you for instance likely to have a successful career in a company where your boss connives with your colleague (who is his tribesman) to take credit for most of your creative input which help the department meet challenging targets that others miss?

You don’t want to rock the boat or cause any trouble. But they don’t seem to mind causing you pain by denying you long overdue recognition. (In fact they sometimes go as far as “setting you up” to take the fall for things that go wrong in the department!).

Do you think they will ever stop if you don’t take them up on their bad habits? I doubt it.

People who are small enough in their thinking to knowingly maltreat others are not likely to stop except they know there will be repercussions.

If you won’t consider making a change for your direct benefit, at least think of how you can use the ideas offered here to EMPOWER your child to deal with bullies and their likes that s/he WILL meet in life.

Imagine your child finds him/herself being bullied repeatedly in his/her new boarding school, even after reporting to senior students and teachers?

Will s/he put an end to it, by acting timid, submissive or subservient before those who torment him/her?

Not likely.

Will getting into fights with the bullies make any difference?

Maybe, but that would depend on how well s/he can fight, but ultimately, the cost/repercussions of violence may not be worth it.

A more intelligent approach would be for him/her to learn how to CONFRONT people who misbehave without being COMBATIVE.

In other words, s/he would master the skills needed to tactfully but firmly challenge others who behave badly in a manner that ensures they CORRECT their “bad” behaviour then/there, and into the future.

The sad reality however is that a lot of people dread having to confront others. Too many assume confronting others implies being combative or worse, being violent. It does not necessarily follow.

Here are 6 tips you can follow to successfully CONFRONT without being COMBATIVE:

1. You do need not to be aggressive or combative to get taken seriously.

Instead, simply learn to learn to assert yourself e.g. many times if you are simply NOT “shy” about telling people what you will NOT accept from them, they will respect you for it.

2. You must master your fear.

There is a useful quote I read somewhere that goes as follows:

“Courage is mastery of fear, not the absence of fear” – Mark Twain

Allowing fear to consume you to the point that you let others intimidate you into accepting their unjust/unfair treatment of you will lead many times to your having very “unhappy” relationships – at work and elsewhere.

Remember: THAT which you fear the most will eventually consume you.

So, conquer your fears – learn to speak your mind about HOW you FEEL to those who make you unhappy – but do so tactfully such that no one will be able to accuse you of being emotional or combative.

3. Stop thinking everyone needs to like you.

It makes no sense to want to be liked by people who do not wish you well or who will not treat you with respect and consideration. Remember, as great as Martin Luther King Jnr. was, some people did not like him, and felt strongly enough to kill him. Same for Jesus Christ, Mahatma Ghandi…all advocates of non-violence!

Do you REALLY think you are going to be different. Answer is NO – except of course you choose to become a “hypocrite” or “Social Chameleon” who tells people what s/he thinks they want to hear, and not what s/he really thinks. In which case, the ideas discussed in this article would be irrelevant to you.

4. Learn to ask questions.

You can use intelligent questioning to demonstrate why those you wish to correct need to change their ways. When people know you are going to ask them questions that expose their bad intentions, they are likely to avoid acting that way often – especially where you are concerned.

Examples of questioning styles you can use: “Why did you just say that to me?” or “Is there any reason why you asked XYZ to go for the audition from this department when both of us applied with similar qualifications – and could have been given the chance to contest for the available slot?”.

5. Build A Reputation

Sometimes making a point of doing what you do WELL every time and being committed/reliable in whatever you are engaged in can make it more difficult for others to try to make you look bad. So, if you make up your mind to show yourself to be consistently up and doing, without playing to the gallery, it could help you build a loyal following among a large number of people who watch from the sidelines – who will feel more inclined to treat you with fairly, rather than let themselves be influenced to do the opposite.

6. Act the fool.

At the end of the day, you will find that no matter what you do, some people live to upset others. From what I have seen in my adult life, if they cannot malign/mal-treat others, they never really feel “happy” with themselves. So trying to make them stop never really achieves any permanent benefits. In this case, one would be better off – in my opinion – choosing to act the fool with this type of people.

Here’s one suggestion: When they do their naughty acts, prepare to mock them in return

For instance, if someone chooses to talk loudly in front of your visiting friends about one of your “highlight workplace career mistakes”, you can take it in your stride by choosing to THANK him/her for “helping you remember THAT interesting experience you would like to share”.

Then make a point of describing the details of one of those mistakes in as humorous a manner as you can, making sure to end by explaining how that incident helped you gain additional competence to do your job (which is what always happens in real life).

By acting in this manner, you are likely to end up looking good via an opportunity created by your “tormentor” – the exact opposite of what s/he intended! Believe me, very many of those who misbehave in the ways discussed in this article, cannot endure being mocked. They are very likely to avoid crossing you in future, you when they discover you repeatedly demonstrate the ability to match them in the manner I suggest.

Three (3) Benefits You Can Expect To Reap by Confronting Without Being Combative

The truth about the kinds of people I have described in this article is that they often get their boldness from the (mistaken) assumption that others will be afraid to challenge them. By doing just that, even if you are unable to stop them, you achieve – at least – three benefits:

1. You put FEAR/DOUBT into his/her mind that that he can get away with treating you like that next time. This will make him/her think twice in future before crossing your path again.

2. Your action can give others useful confidence boosting evidence that it is not impossible to stand up to such persons if one goes about it the right way. Some may decide to follow your example if/when they find themselves faced with a similar predicament.

3. You could end up building a silent followership that over time may grow to a point where others will be willing to JOIN forces with you – as a group – to resist the advances of these “bullies” and their likes, on weaker members of the society.

In summary, you can – and should – learn to assert yourself in your relationships

You do not have to let others push you around just because you don’t want to upset them.

Remember: If they are upsetting you, or some other defenseless person, then they need to be TOLD to stop it.

You must be prepared to consider the possibility that they they do not know or refuse to be bothered. Either way, if YOU don’t take action, they may not stop. Keeping quiet and waiting for someone else to do it for you will often lead to needlessly prolonged suffering on your part.

You deserve better than that!

Teaching Kids “Practical Problem Solving” Through a Cake Baking Mishap!

Explore the picture “story” below of my kid’s continuing charcoal stove (no oven) cake baking …this time around decorating with icing. And what an experience it’s been…with a MAJOR mistake caused by an oversight on my part [As I type this, they’re having to bake ANOTHER set to make up]!!

Below are a series of “ghastly” looking photos from yesterday’s activities, which ended with my discovery, AFTER asking why the cakes looked shrunken/hard, that they had added water to the butter/flour/sugar/vanilla mixture …because they felt it looked too thick!!!!

Photo 1: Argh…the icing I can understand. This was a first attempt, and we’d not really done the due diligence of studying the many downloaded pages on “how to”. But the cake seems to be “hiding” above.

Photo 2: The cup cakes in the pot mounted on the charcoal stove – African style! Without the umbrella of mushy icing in photo 1 they look awful…especially considering that the kids have been baking them (even in my absence or without my supervision for over a year)!

Photo 3: During the egg beating and initial mixing I’d been around. But later on I’d left to visit the cafe. Then I returned 2 hours later and decided to take a nap…

Photo 12: I was desperate to get a set that looked passable…so this shot was taken of selected pink capped ones…still NOT good enough…lol!

So What Happened? Well I’d been so confident based on our many previous efforts that they’d gotten used to the recipe, having done it many times in the past.

So, upon returning from the cyber cafe, I’d gone in to take a nap.

Well, it turned out they’d forgotten the exact order in which the ingredients were to be added and mixed. As a result, things got a bit confused. By the time they brought the cakes to me, so I could take the photos it was too late.

Did you notice also the icing?

That was their first attempt at preparing/applying it, using the gun we bought.

Far from perfect. Ironically, despite the fact that we downloaded many pages of step-by-step instructions from different websites on preparing and apply icing to cakes, I failed to get them to read and follow those instructions.

Having said the above, no matter how not-so-great they look, the cakes certainly taste great…and we’ve been munching away since yesterday – including birthday boy himself!

But they’re giving it another go this afternoon (at my insistence), to make the more presentable kinds we’ve successfully made many times in the past.

It’s been a problem-solving experience in establishing best practice procedures to get consistent results in a specific activity.

Having seen the result of my poor leadership of the kids, especially in their excited states of mind, I called them together and we talked.

I noted that last September they’d made a perfect set of cakes in their grandparents’ home and asked what WENT WRONG this time around. They argued – a lot! Not so much blame or buck passing, but voicing different opinions about how things should have been done.

That was when I knew I WAS the one at fault…with all my self-proclaimed experience in training, I’d overlooked the need to put in place formal written instructions in form of a recipe, for them to follow in order to ensure the product turned out was consistently to the desired standard.

So, I played back the video (see below) I recorded with my Blackberry of their September 2014 project we did in their grandparent’s home

We watched the stages when they were doing the mixing in which I asked in what order the ingredients were being added. By the time we were done watching, their eyes were bright with excitement, as they recalled what had been done wrong.

Not surprisingly, when I subtly suggested they go back and try making another set, they jumped at the opportunity. Luckily for us, virtually all the ingredients needed were still left over – enough to make another set of cakes. Including the icing. I left them back home, preparing to do this, to come for a meeting here, at the cafe, where I am now typing this piece.

Suffice to say THIS latest exercise has once again ended successfully, with the kids picking up valuable new knowledge and insights, as I’d hoped.

1. Why I DO THIS?

It’s to empower my kids with real world relevant skills that complement whatever formal schooling they are exposed to, in a way that ensure they can hold their own ANYWHERE, without being at the mercy of others. Be it financially or physically.

Cake baking is just one of many skills I am working to ensure they acquire. Every smart thinking parent will do same for his/her kids …especially if you want to give them the best chances of success in life.

2. Why I TALK ABOUT it?

It’s because I have a God-given vision and mission to share my insights and know-how with others who may need it, so they can benefit and use to advance their own lives.

This is why I write articles explaining what I do with my kids, what works, and what does not, so they can be better informed about what to do and how.

I offer various resources, some free, others paid – such as books and even self-tutoring DVD products, like my 10 Storyfied Yoruba Proverbs for Childrenm and other Leaders DVD as well as my Best Practice Parenting book titled “Kukuru Danger” -which is based on my true life experiences as a teenager.

3. Why not just send them to a vocational school to learn? That will come for whichever one of them decides s/he is interested enough to want to get formal training. Otherwise, my key purpose is to empower them to become self-tutoring or Independent Learners…like I AM.

In other words, these exercises and coaching I am giving my kids are designed to help them develop the mental attitude to pursue self-improvement.

Just like I have done over the past 2 decades successfully teaching myself EVERY single income earning skill or knowledge I possess today as an entrepreneur,

That would make them literally unstoppable (regardless of the severity or duration of adversity that comes up) like I AM!

Yesterday (Mon 6th April 2015), I DELIBERATELY did NOT publish what would have been Issue No. 188 of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter (view last week’s issue here) …because I decided to RE-INVENT myself in celebration of 2 years since I relocated to Benin Republic on 1st April 2013.

Fearlessly Share Your God Given Genius and Experience Superior Success

In certain societies announcing your plans to others can attract resentment, envy and criticism (e.g that you’re a show-off). Some may even plot to pull you down. This explains why a childhood friend recently expressed concern about an update I posted on Facebook of my plans to move my family to Cotonou.

Read my response below, in which I explain that I’ve done it for years, to defy haters, and also inspire others to do same, so that society can progress.

Good point .

However what you noted is EXACTLY why I do things the way I do them. You see certain aspects of our culture, for me, need overhaul. One of them is what you referred to about people’s attitude. I’ve successfully defied them for years (not without struggle/pain of course) and will continue doing so.

The Americans especially are my role models. Everything Nigerians see me succeeding at today is because I refuse to let negative attitudes of others dictate how I do my thing.

My heroes (like Fela, Branson, Dan Kennedy, Kiyosaki) had the habit of breaking rules and being contrarian, yet succeeding despite bad belle.

My Facebook postings are aimed at showing others how to deal successfully with society’s negativity to achieve worthwhile goals in life.

We in Nigeria fail often to understand that we need to look beyond ourselves, and seek to make a difference in society for the benefit of others.

The irony is that Facebook is being used by millions all over the world to do just that!

In my case my Facebook presence is an extension of my Web Marketing System. Unlike many others, my Facebook is a key component of my business marketing arsenal.

Proof of this is evident in the fact that over 25% of my Facebook friends actually started as buyers of my solutions and/or subscribers to my website (including several non Africans).

A look at my Facebook profile and cover photos both indicate that I want my business interest to feature on my Facebook presence.

For me therefore, anyone who wants to be in my Facebook space will simply have to put up with whatever I post. If they dislike a particular one, they can either click away, or unfriend me. No be by force ke!

You see, there’s no value to be had in keeping friends who cannot accept you unconditionally and share in what pleases you, as you do with them.

My plan to relocate is not just personal. It is the next step in the evolution of my plan to boost my growing name and brand recognition in a way that will win me speaking invitations across the continent.

The young man I’m mentoring on Web Marketing here in Lagos was with me yesterday evening and we discussed his balance payment to join my Inner Circle, and next steps on learning Joomla and WordPress. He earns a living selling GNLD and similar products from door to door.

When he found out how I sell without even going around physically, he told me he wanted to be able to do the same. And that’s how we started!

By deliberately posting news of my plans and progress (as I’ve done for years) I document real life examples of how I built my brand for others like him to learn from. The timeline helps me show my success did not happen overnight!

There are many like him across Africa looking for guidance like the one I offer.

So, for me, being on Facebook is not an ego trip.

Indeed this is bigger than me. What I’m doing is based on a God given vision and mission. Most of what you see me post are often stuff that I just get inspired to write on the spur of the moment.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that God is using me as a vessel to pass messages to others, to wake them up to do what he expects of them.

And what he expects is that each of us will not “hide our lamp under a bushel” but instead boldly maximize our God given potential for others to be inspired, and for Him to be glorified.

I think the quote below perfectly sums up what I’ve tried to say above

In reality, sometimes, the guy who becomes the “local champion” – as described above – may not necessarily be “expert” at speaking the language.

Lesson to Take Away: How good is your command of the language you have to use an expert in your chosen field?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve also put up writing with such errors. So, it’s not like I’m trying to claim perfection here.
