No. 116: We Are Poor – Not Because of God (Lessons from 7 True Stories)

As an expert in your field, know this: The creator made YOU. You therefore have the capacity, as well as an obligation, a duty.. indeed a calling (!), to be so creative in doing what you do, as to make the world a better place…and the most of yourself.

You CAN do this regardless of your colour, language, education, race, family history, upbringing, social environment, present circumstances or means.

No. 116: We Are Poor – Not Because of God (Lessons from 7 True Stories)

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

As an expert in your field, know this: The creator made YOU. You therefore have the capacity, as well as an obligation, a duty.. indeed a calling (!), to be so creative in doing what you do, as to make the world a better place…and the most of yourself.

You CAN do this regardless of your colour, language, education, race, family history, upbringing, social environment, present circumstances or means.

Many Ordinary People Have Already Done (and Are Doing) It

“We should’nt be poor. S.B. And don’t ever let me hear you say that it is God’s Will that we are poor. We are poor – not because of God. We a poor because father has never developed a desire to become rich. No one in our family has ever developed a desire to be anything else.” – S.B. Fuller’s mother speaking to him in his formative years. (Source: Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, by Napoleon Hill)

NB: S.B. Fuller was an African American man born to a father who was a tenant farmer in Louisiana, in the USA. S.B would later in life own controlling interest in 8 companies – including 4 cosmetic companies, a hosiery company, a label company, and a newspaper. And he attributed his success, to the above statement his mother often made to him.

We can all draw inspiration from the achievements of everyday persons, who made yesterday’s (seeming) impossibilities, today’s realities.

Here are examples that anyone can relate to:

1. Thomas Edison

Despite having only 3 months of formal schooling, he created the light bulb – after testing thousands of different metals without success.

For a man who was written off by school teachers as being retarded, and incapable of doing well in school, his life’s achievement of 1093 patents is no small feat!

Regarding the opinion of his teachers, Edison famously noted that his mother “was the making of” him.

This was because, when he told her what he overheard teachers saying to the inspector about him, she went with him to the school.

Then she loudly announced to all around, that her son was smarter than all the teachers put together.

Subsequently, she withdrew him from that school, and proceeded to home-school him.

Today, it’s quite obvious she knew what she was talking about…and what she was doing!

2. Henry Ford

He led the creation of a 6 cylinder engine that was unheard of in his time. It powered a “horseless carriage” (which we know today as a “car”) that non-affluent persons could afford.

That journey took him, and his engineers, many long months of hard work with repeated and frequent failures.

Note that Ford started out as a stark illiterate (according to Napoleon Hill in “Think and Grow Rich”).

3. The Wright brothers

They showed us how to “fly” – but had to endure many temporary failures before they arrived. Keep in mind that during their time NO ONE had ever made any successful flights.

And they literally had to continue by the force of their own belief – not that they were being cheered on by a crowd of “enthusiastic supporters”.

Yet, despite the risk of permanent injury or death, they continued – till they made it.

4. Robert Goddard

His works provided the foundation for rocket science, and ultimately space travel. But while alive he was ridiculed far and wide for doing that same work.

Only decades after his death, did his work get the recognition it deserved – causing America’s Space Center to be named after him

5. Tim Berners-Lee

He created “HTML” i.e. Hyper-Text Mark-up Language, which remains the fabric of the World Wide Web as we know it today).

That’s why he’s known as the father of the web.

Interestingly, he chose not to reap financial rewards from his creation. Instead he advocated keeping the web “free”.

6. Ben Carson

His world renowned “gifted” brain surgeon’s hands have saved countless kids, that even parents had given up on!

However, to achieve his amazing success, he had to endure years of crippling poverty.

Apart from the creator, he credits a powerfully supportive mother (who lacked formal education) as being his rock of support, during his formative years, and difficult times in life.

7. Fela Anikulapo Kuti

His incredible life story and unique Afro beat music, are now celebrated in a very successful broadway show, and also annually at an event aptly named “Felabration”.

The world’s most successful people in entertainment and human rights advancement (e.g. Jay-Z, Will Smith among others), actively partake.

While alive, Fela applied his God-given creativity to make his music a weapon for fighting oppression, corruption and other societal ills.

He went through great suffering for doing so. But greatness also became his reward.

Most who knew Fela were aware that he held his mother in the greatest esteem, and was devoted to her.

When she was killed during a raid on his Kalakuta republic, he waxed an album lashing out at the government he accused of complicity.

Today, his legacy is carried on by 2 competent sons (Femi and Seun), and other Afro beat and human rights advocates, in America, Europe, the Caribbean, Asia, and other parts of the world.

Two Things to Remember, From the Above Examples…

1. What You Lack Cannot Stop You

Edison did not attend formal schooling. Ford was a total illiterate.

Yet, they both achieved astounding worldwide fame.

And they did it by applying their God-given creativity – with unrelenting persistence.

2. People Who Believe In You Can Make You…Especially Mothers!

I confirm it’s true.

Mothers in particular are quite amazing in their ability to believe in, and inspire their children to super-achieve.

The above examples of S.B Fuller, Edison, Carson and Fela perfectly illustrate this point.

But it’s not just mothers that can have this kind of effect on a person…

Anyone who believes in you will do what s/he can to support you in your creative efforts. And that will lead you to success, eventually.

Final Words: You Are Good Enough!

If we all choose to strive daily to actualize our full potentials, as creative beings, like those mentioned above did, our individual societies would be dramatically transformed in a much shorter time.

Right now, some people seem to (wrongly) believe the creator made a certain group of people smarter. And that they are to WAIT on those people, to create what the rest of the world is to use.

That mentality, if not changed, will make a person a lifetime mediocre, and under-achiever, no matter how many hours s/he spends PRAYING to the creator for greatness.

As an expert in your field, especially when you are one who wants to be a “speaker” who addresses others, you MUST believe in yourself.

In other words, believe that YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH to stand on the platform, and/or that you’re eminently qualified to speak – face to face – with any important person in your industry, about your subject.

If you need help preparing yourself to do the above, Burt Dubin’s Speaking Success System can help you.

Here’s wishing you a MASSIVELY creative week :-)

If you provide farm support products and services, this issue of my weekly speaking IDEAS newsletter will interest you.

That includes experts working with private owned agro-allied companies, government agencies or even Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Yesterday, I listened to a top Ekiti state government official (on Nigerian TV) explaining how they are attracting young people to establish agri-businesses.

No. 114: Speaking IDEAS for Farm Support Experts

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

If you provide farm support products and services, this issue of my weekly speaking IDEAS newsletter will interest you. That includes experts working with private owned agro-allied companies, government agencies or even Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Yesterday, I listened to a top Ekiti state government official (on Nigerian TV) explaining how they are attracting young people to establish agri-businesses.

Instead of going into poorly rewarding subsistence farming, this new generation of farm owners are being empowered to start farm businssess at much higher levels. The officer noted that in a few years, with diligent effort, some can become millionaires!

You CAN Decide What Target Audience Level to Serve

I love the Ekiti state approach. It’s produces better results.

And the principle applies in all spheres of life.

For instance, your success level as a service provider will often depend on the target audience “level” you choose to serve.

There’s a saying that it’s wiser to fish in small ponds with large number of big fish (hungry for what you offer), than in big ponds with lots of smaller fish that are not that hungry.

Here are 2 rules that guide me in choosing those I serve:

Rule 1: Don’t target buyers who do not have the means to PAY you well for your product or service.

Rule 2: Make frequent use of strategies that let you market to large numbers of the right kinds of buyers at once.

Apart from enabling you win more buyers, doing the above will reduce your Cost of Customer Acquisition (COCA).

Get this: Choosing NOT to calculate your COCA, will NOT change the fact that you’re incurring that cost!!!

So I recommend you actively measure, and use it (i.e. your COCA) to identify your most cost-effective customer acquisition/marketing strategy!

That’s what I did to arrive at the conclusion that – in addition to using a Web Marketing System (where possible) – the following two(2) strategies can win more “farmer converts” for farm support experts:

1.  Be a Resource Person at “Events” for Farmers:

Burt Dubin live Burt’s Flagship Album

This is the product to own if you can own only one. Why? Because in it you discover principles of platform mastership available to you nowhere else at any price.

You hear performance strategies you can emulate. You shorten your learning curve. You see ways to engage and delight audiences with both content and stories . . . plus you experience a bit of fun.

With its Money back if not delighted Guarantee hardly any are returned.

Find out why

Last week, a past buyer of my Excel-VB driven feed formulation software told me he was travelling inter-state to attend a 2 day workshop for farmers.

He works as a Technical Sales Consultant, for an agro-allied company.

I’d called to ask if he would be willing to help complete a short MS Excel-based questionnaire survey I’m in Nigeria to administer to farm industry stakeholders. It’s partly to obtain information for the international research paper I’m writing on using ICT for Feed Formulation.

Now, I did not ask him if he would be giving a presentation at that event, but I suspect his company may have been the (or one of the) organisers.

So it’s likely someone from their team would have addressed the audience.

Even if you’re not the organiser, and have not even been invited, NOTHING stops you from thinking up ways to appear as a Contract Resource Person.

In other words, you’d think up a presentation you can offer that organiser would consider of potential value to their attendees.

I suggest offering a scaled down version FREE, and a full blown version for a negotiable fee.

My experiences suggest that doing so is likely to give you more credibility, than if you simply came all out offering to speak FREE. At least in this part of the world :-)

2. Offer Short, On-Demand Educational Talks to “Farmer Groups”

Presentation Magic - Speaking Business Success Presentation Magic

A live example, including a complete audio recording of a program Burt created from scratch–on a topic he knew nothing about and never, ever presented before! See how you, guided by your personal Learning Guide, (Presentation Magic), can do this too and thrill audiences as often as you want.

Presentation Magic Manual with new pages added plus 3 audio CDs.

more information

But don’t wait for others to organise events you’ll offer to speak at.

Create your own opportunities!

Think up a list of topics your target audience may find potentially useful or interesting.

Develop short-talks (15 to 30 minutes) based on each topic, and prepare speaker one sheets for each.

Print them out and insert into nylon sleeves, in a branded folder you’ll take physically with you as you work.

Also have PDF versions ready to emailed or downloaded online.

Next, reach out to decision makers of your target farmer groups (cooperatives, associations) etc.

Ask them to invite you to speak – FREE – to their members at their next meeting or event on your list of topics.

Minimize time, effort and money expense in doing the above.

For instance, unless distance is no issue, try using your phone, email to – if possible – finalize date, time, venue.

Only “travel distances”, if you’re reasonably sure, from phone/email interaction, that doing so would be worthwhile.

Tell them how the ideas you’ll share will help their members.

Explain why the work you do as a farm support expert makes you uniquely qualified to inform and educate them on those subjects.

If your list does not cover the topic they “prefer”, I suggest you offer to prepare that for a token fee :-)

Not everyone will say yes.

And don’t expect your first few efforts to yield” yesses” either.

You will have to persist.

But if you’ve done your homework well, some will bite.

And if you go on to deliver useful value to them, all sorts of good things can happen from there!

Even If You Offer FREE Solutions to Farmers, The Above Ideas Can Save You MONEY, Time and Effort!

more information

If you’re a farm support expert working with government or an NGO, it’s possible you offer FREE products and services, and therefore may not need payment from farmers.

You can still expend LESS effort, time and money, to make farmers adopt what you offer.

The above strategies can make you more cost-efficient.

You get to achieve multiple time and effort savings, plus greater marketing mileage for money you spend.

Those who provide you financial backing would be pleased with that!

Showmanship Stratagems

Discover these secrets of making your programs more interesting and valuable to your clients and audiences now.

more information

For all the above to work, give them something (information, education etc) they can put to productive use.

However, in doing that, use your creativity to subtly show how what you “sell” can also help them.

For instance, weave educational stories/examples from your daily experiences, in serving farmers, into your talks.

That often works magicPeople find you more believable, when you use real life examples.

Once that happens, it will only be a matter of time before they start looking to get more from you…and they’ll often be willing to pay, to get it!

No. 110: Why You Need to Think With Your Whole Body (and How)!

**********

What if you had something that could help you “sense” potential problems in relationships with new acquaintances, as well as established contacts? What if it could also give you useful hints towards achieving your valued goals?

AND, what if I told you that YOU ALREADY have IT in you?

I Ignored It for Almost 2 Years, & Paid a Painful Price

Most times that I’ve listened to, and/or acted on it, I’ve ended up much better off.

That’s why I always pay serious attention to it.

Whenever I’ve failed to do that, I’ve often experienced some stagnation – or even setbacks.

Example 1:

When I’m with people – new acquaintances or otherwise – it often subtly alerts me to insincerity, and even malice, that may be directed at me.

The uninitiated, who relate with me, may not know it.

But EVERYTHING that ANYONE says, thinks, feels or does (including writing) in relating with me, (most times) gets passed through that “filter” to get to me.

Many times that “feeling” (which actually permeates my entire being!) guides me to know what to believe, who to trust, when to say YES or NO etc.

And that has worked wonders for me in life.

Indeed, I continually succeed today, despite countless setbacks (and periodic attempts by detractors to pull me down over the past 10 years), because of it!

Example 2:

For almost 2 years – up till February 2013 – it kept telling me to relocate from Nigeria, to Benin Republic.

I kept “getting that feeling”, and yet I kept refusing to yield to it.

Guess what?

That roughly 20 month period was one of the most frustrating I ever had.

It was not that I did not do good work. But many things just never went right – often with the clients.

Over time, I began to avoid taking on new offline clients, and began focusing on online delivery of freelance writing and Excel-VB software development services, as well as products (e.g my books, and software).

But erratic power supply in Nigeria made working that way a punishing experience. It was so hard to carry on!

All this while, the subtle “hints” never stopped. It kept quietly telling me. At a point, I realized I had to “listen”, and do what “it” was telling me to do.

I eventually moved here in Benin Republic on 1st April 2013.

The first 3 months were tough.

My self-belief was pit to the test many times. But I held out, and eventually broke through.

Today, about 6 months on, the results I’m getting are much better than anything I got in the over 10 years I spent working from Nigeria.

That’s no exaggeration.

I enjoy much higher productivity. And I undergo less stress/strain. Mainly because I get more done with less effort, at less cost, in an environment devoid of perpetual annoyances!

And it’s mainly because I listened – and continue to listen – to IT.

What Is This “Thing” That’s Been Telling Me “Things”?

It’s called “Intuition”.

It can also be referred to as the “Sixth sense”.

I’d been haphazardly following its guidance for over 2 decades, without knowing it was often why I periodically excelled.

Then I began reading books that explained how making more conscious use of it facilitates better pursuit of one’s goals.

And I began doing it more deliberately.

Here’s a warning for those with “fast-food” mental attitudes:

This does not work instant wonders.

One must do it with persistence and diligence, over time to get the results.

There is a learning process.

So keep that in mind, and don’t expect overnight miracles.

To Use Your Intuition, You Must “Think With Your Whole Body”

Renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid International Speakers, Burt Dubin – in a Speaker Match Radio show with Brian Kaplovitch – once spoke in elaborate detail about how to use your intuition.

NB: I represent Burt Dubin as sole agent across the African continent, for sales of his speaker mentoring products and services.

That show’s edition was titled “Conquer Your Demons (What They Don’t Teach You At Speaking Business School)”.

Below is a verbatim transcript I made, of excerpts from the audio recording.

Read it, and apply the wisdom Burt shares in there.

NB: If you do so, YOU will NEVER be the same again. If the foregoing makes me sound like a preacher, take it as a sign that you should BELIEVE me :-)

====Start of Text Transcript of Burt Dubin’s Speaker Match Radio Message=====

“What most of us do not know is that your body – this is every person – not just you, everyone.

Everyone’s body is a sensitive receiver. Did you ever deal with someone and then say to yourself, “Oh that guy’s a pain in the butt”? Or a pain in the neck?

Your body is telling you there’s something wrong…what’s wrong with this picture?

Albert Einstein, the great Einstein said (when asked about the source of his cognitive skill), he said: “Well most people just think with their brain. I think with my whole body. I think with my whole body. “

I have learned that…now this is me speaking not Einstein, though I have his picture in my office, my grandmother gave me, an etching of Albert Einstein that she got way back…waaay way back 1932 when he spoke for her at Dorso Jephard (?) in Philadelphia.

That’s another great story, but we’ll set that one aside.

He said I think with my whole body.

Let me tell you what Emerson said. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

He said “What lies before you, and what lies behind you, are as nothing compared with what lies within you.”

Emerson was a brilliant, brilliant man.

And Dr Willis Harman, now alive and then the president of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, way way back before I was a member of NSA, I was a member of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology.

And I’d listen to him say these words, oh my lord late ’70’s – 1979 or 80 perhaps, into 82 to 83 and ah. And he gave a whole program on intuition.

And he said “Listen to no other voice”.

Now for whatever it may be worth, throughout my speaking career, as well as before my speaking career, this has been what guided every decision that I made.

Listening to my inner voice.

When 18 years ago Brian,  almost 19 years ago now, I was then a very successful speaker doing oh maybe 75 gigs a year for 3,500 to 5 o 6 sometimes 8.

And I got this intuition, saying I should no longer be doing this. I should abandon my speaking career and become a mentor for speakers. That was back in 1989…89!

I listened to the inner voice, I became a mentor for speakers and I may well be the best one in the world.

I’m not burdened with modesty. You know what Napoleon said? He said:

“Modesty is for people who have something to be modest about.”

So listen to your inner voice, and I’m saying this to everyone on the call.

Listen to your inner voice. Do what your inner voice tells you to do regarding your career, regarding your life, regarding your topic, regarding your market, regarding the speaking practice that you involve yourself in – all of that.

Listen to your inner voice – you will not be wrong.

I’ve written in the past on the above theme. Three of them appear below.

Interestingly, the second article listed, was written following a request by someone who read the first one on Facebook, and took part in the discussion that followed.

2. Sometimes You Need to Act Without Your Intuition (6 Tips)

3. To Succeed You Need Your Sixth Sense to Unmask Insincerity

You may wish to read these 3 pieces, for more insights on how to use your intuition.

Remember though, that no one can realistically aim to achieve perfection at this. But you can – indeed should – become proficient. And that will make you succeed more.

Good luck!

You already make money from your business. What if you could make extra money using your expert knowledge and skills – without needing to spend more?  Unless it is illegal or dishonest, a low/zero cost opportunity to gain additional (sometimes passive) income – or marketing exposure – should never be passed up.

Forget what others will say – or think. Below I explain zero/low cost ideas you can adopt to grow yourself, and complement your income.

This won’t apply to everyone – but reading it could just trigger ideas you may find useful. So, stay with me here!

This Applies to Solo entrepreneurs As Well As CEOs of Large Multinationals

I spent seven very useful years in Guinness Nigeria. During that time I saw how a deliberate strategy of Variable Costs Reduction, was used to turn the company’s fortunes around within less than 3 years.

But it took changing the way people worked to achieve that.

Even when we could afford to buy new plants, the decision makers challenged us to aim for savings in the production process, towards financing our planned purchases.

They made us implement the workplace organisation and best practice systems we were trained on, to churn out the same or better output at lower costs.

The results were amazing. What we initially thought impossible became daily realities we took for granted.

At a point, we achieved the year’s target volume output in 6 months!

In case you don’t see the link, that translated to doubling the company’s profit…ultimately.

The lesson I learnt was: Rather than dip your hands in your pockets, every time you need new inputs in your business, make the business generate the needed funds. You end up far better off that way.

The Same Philosophy Can Be Applied to Other Areas of Endeavour

Even in running the home. I know this from doing it myself. It’s just the HOW that differs a bit.

For persons in business, I discuss two examples below….

1. Writing for Money (and Marketing Exposure)

You’ve probably had moments when you’ve considered writing a book – or a special report – based on your unique knowledge and insights.

You do know you have knowledge, and especially insights, that others lack…don’t you? If you did not know it before now, then take it from me – you DO.

If truth be told, you probably know it, but are scared to own it. That’s the way most people are wired.

For instance, you’ve probably read stuff written by your peers that you privately consider “incomplete” or “inadequate”.

But you hesitate to voice your own opinion by writing or speaking on the same subject.

Stop doing that to yourself!

Make your views available for your target audience to read. They need to make better sense of the subject. You can help them do that, and reap useful benefits in return.

And if you do a good job, many will gladly pay to read what you write.

2. Speaking for Money (and Marketing Exposure)

Closely related to writing is the business of speaking for money.

I’ve written a lot about this over the years. With proper packaging, promotion and presentation of your “expert” self (to paraphrase Burt Dubin), you can get paid to speak to individuals and groups.

You can also use Public Speaking for Business Marketing.

With individuals, you would “speak” as a coach, mentor or consultant. With groups or organisations, you would act in the forementioned roles, and also a “lecturer, facilitator, seminar leader” etc.

Just as with writing, people will see you as a valuable provider of useful knowledge and information.

Enquirers about certain services I offer are asked to pay N10, 000 (about $60 USD) to speak with me for thirty minutes to one hour on it.

Now, some experts would call that peanuts. But in my local market – and to the audience that seeks that service – it’s proved just right.

What’s more, I use it mainly to ensure I do not have my time wasted. That’s why if they go on to hire me, they get the N10,000 refunded to them, via a deduction from fees they pay me for the full project.

Anyone who refuses to pay that fee has to go elsewhere. Those who take the leap of faith always get value for their money.

Note that most times these people find me via my written works e.g. articles, PDF e-books and reports.

In my write-ups, I mention the fact that I offer a speaking service. Likewise, in the promotional material for my talks, I announce the fact that I offer freleance writing (and other) serveces.

At speaking event venues I offer information products on CD/DVDs, and in print form in “back rooms”.

See how this works?

You Can Use Writing and/or Speaking to Directly or Indirectly Earn Income

Do a search online and you’ll see that people with similar expertise to yours already write in your field. Some author books reports (e.g. PDF, Epub mobile format) for free or a fee.

Others get paid to write for print magazines or websites. Many of course write for themselves on their own websites.

They also get invited for paid speaking gigs. Many times meeting planning decision makers use their writing to assess the potential value such experts can deliver as speakers.

That’s why to boost your chances of making money from speaking, you really want to do lots of writing!

Avoid Fooling Yourself Into Thinking You Don’t Have Time to Write

The problem you’ll have will rarely be a lack of time.

Believe me. Every month, I publish a new article on my Self-Development (SD) Nuggest blog daily from Mondays to Saturday (sometimes Sundays).

During that same period I often write for clients on widely differing themes like education, legal consulting, poultry farming, hearing and speech improvement etc.

For myself, I also write and sell information products on different subjects/themes.

Yet, not once have I ever been found wanting by any client.

The key is proper self-management, planning and discipline – backed by passion for what you do.

The marketing exposure I get from doing all the above, increases the appeal of my range of products (custom spreadsheet software) and services (web marketing, farm business support, freelance writing etc).

That enhanced appeal got me chosen to be guest Speaker at the 2012 edition of the Annual Entrepreneurial Lecture, organised by Yaba College of Technology’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development.

The above ideas can enable you make more money faster, with less effort/expense, doing what you love!

Final Words: To Get Started, Do What I Did

I made a habit of visiting this guru’s website, and reading ALL his articles on speaking, writing and marketing. He’s been around for over 3 decades, and is recognised worldwise as an authority on all those topics (read what accomplished experts say about him in this PDF).

By creatively adapting what I learnt from reading (and listening to) his – and some other people’s – stuff, I developed the ideas I’ve shared above. Do what I did, and you’re bound to come up with even better ideas to sell yourself successfully.

…plus, if you really want to fly high, invest in a few of his products and services, and the sky may not even be your limit!

NB: Today, I represent him as sole agent on the African continent.

No. 105: Chasing Clients Will Cost You Profits (A True Story)

I returned from Nigeria, where the events described in this write-up took place, 14 hours ago. Sales leads “follow up” – when “over done” – can sometimes erode one’s “credibility”.

Potential buyers start thinking you need them more than they need you. Then insisting on your best fees/prices becomes difficult!

That’s why it’s wiser to make THEM chase YOU instead. This issue of my newsletter describes a subtle strategy you can adopt.

No. 105: Chasing Clients Will Cost You Profits (A True Story)

I returned from Nigeria (where events described in this write-up took place) 14 hours ago.

Use “Power Positioning” to Make Prospective Buyers Chase YOU

Business owners who achieve more marketing success rarely chase prospects or clients around. Usually, they get called by prospective and existing clients. Their established reputations and brands makes those who want the solutions they offer, seek them out.

Anyone can achieve this level of marketing competence, but s/he must be ready to develop and nurture it over time. It does NOT happen overnight.

What you need is to carefully articulate the products and services you offer, and actively promote it to the right target audience. You will do this persistently, being sure to constantly specify what sets you apart (makes your solutions superior) to any others your audience may encounter.

You will use an intelligent mix of promotional strategies to achieve this outcome over time.

As Michel Fortin (whose Ten Commandments of Power Positioning FREE ebook I read, and incorporated into my Web Marketing System) says, Power Positioning enables you achieve Top of Mind Awareness.

In other words, people who need what you offer, will believe only you can help them. And will often be very unwilling to look elsewhere!

The obvious benefit to you is that selling to them then simply becomes a simple, stress-free process.

You’re UN-likely to find yourself debating your fees or prices with such persons. More often than not, their conviction is so great they’ll pay whatever you ask them to pay. In fact, they’ll simply say “send me the payment details, and I’ll send the money now.”

I’ve Had This Experience More Times Than I Can Count

And today, the frequency of occurrence increases. Before the one below, just last Friday, I got a web form request titled “Poultry layers feed formulation” from a Ugandan working in Tunisia as a Caterer, regarding my Feed Formulation Handbook. It read as follows:

“Dear Sir/madam,

I’m a Ugandan working in Tunisia and running a poultry farm in Uganda, and I wish to get your feed formulation to improve my poultry.”

While I was still reading the message this person sent from my website, I got a Facebook friend request from him on my Blackberry!

See how this works?

REMEMBER: Selling is a process – and a key part of it is “pre-qualified leads generation”.

Not every enquirer will buy at first contact. So make them “connect” with you (e.g. via giving you their email addresses, names, phone number and making friends with you on social media) for starters.

Then over time, continuously expose them to your marketing information, until they move to “buy-mode”.

In a past article I explained how a prospect (named Dipo) stayed on my mailing list for over 3 years, before eventually buying my handbook and software that he’d originally telephone me about.

Today, we communicate like friends via email and phone, but have still NEVER met face to face, in the flesh!

A Recent True Story That Illustrates The Benefits of Using Power Positioning

One morning, about a year ago, when I was still based in Lagos, Nigeria, a gentleman – Uche – called my mobile line to enquire about my Livestock Feed Formulation Handbook. I’d noticed two missed calls from him very late the night before (around 11.30p.m).

We spoke for about 15 minutes. He had seen the video demonstration of (what is now the old version of) my Ration Formulation Software, and also read the article about the handbook I sold with it.

Among other things’ he wanted to know what animals he could compound rations for using the handbook’s illustrated Pearson Square Computation method.

As I gave answers to his questions, he would “grunt” at intervals and say “Hmm…okay…” – then ask another.

Eventually, he told me he would get back to me. I encouraged him to take his time. And he did (or so I thought) – because I never heard from him again.

I relocated to Benin Republic on April 1st 2013. Since then I’ve only visited Nigeria once i.e. between 3rd and 10th of August. While there, I was unable to use my Nigeria mobile line which Uche had called. My provider had disabled the line based on “inactivity”.

So I used my wife’s phone line, till I managed to reactivate mine. But that did not happen until the Monday morning I was to return to Benin Republic :-)

Unknown to Me, Uche Had Been Trying to Reach Me for Months!

I just returned from my second trip to Nigeria yester night (Sunday 1st September 2013) night, around 10pm, from a visit to a client’s farm in Ekiti state.

He had his driver transport me down there on Friday night, and his farm manager put me up in the farm house. We spent the major part of Saturday going around the farm, as I asked questions to get details I needed to build a custom Excel-VB driven Farm Management application for him.

That first night we arrived, I’d discussed with the farm manager until about 1.00a.m in the morning. Just as I was about to go to sleep, I noticed 4 missed calls – and one SMS – on my (now functional) mobile phone line.

They were all from Uche! His text message simply read:

“Good morning Mr. Tayo, please send me your email address.”

There was no name, but I knew it was him, because I ALWAYS “tag” my prospective buyers (by saving their phone numbers/other contact details with special acronyms).

I’ve profited greatly doing this with every prospective buyer who actually gets to the point of discussing PRICE with me. It enables me recall what stage we’ve reached in our sales discussions when next we have to speak.

Each specific acronyms indicates what “sales” stage each person is at.

In Uche’s case, the acronym I saw his number saved under instantly reminded me of our long question and answer session.

So, when I saw his message, I was almost 95% sure I knew why he’d made contact. I was also not surprised that his call/message came around the time of my return to the country.

NB: You may wonder how he knew to call just as I arrived in the country. I’ve written about “strange coincidences” that happen, when people practice the science of getting rich diligently. Read my most recent article on that amazing principle here.

“I’ve been calling your number for so long!” He Exclaimed

I was too busy to get back to Uche due to the tasks I had to do for my visit. So it was only on Sunday morning, that I called him on phone.

He immediately exclaimed “I’ve been calling your number for so long and never got through!”

TIP: Think about the fixed determination he must have had, to keep trying – over months – to reach me. That’s the impact of Power Positioning. It makes them sure YOU have the solution they need.

In Uche’s case, by the time we spoke, he simply said “I need your feed formulation software and handbook urgently. Send me your account number and email address. I want to make the payment first thing tomorrow morning.

I told him I would, and then went out to the farm to take photos and other notes on the farm prior to our departure. Due to some delays, it was only about 2p.m that we eventually began our return journey to Benin Republic.

Uche called me at 3p.m to say he was still waiting for my text message. I explained that the needed information was on my blackberry line which would not be active until I returned to Cotonou.

I eventually sent him the details just after midnight. And just this morning, I replied to the Ugandan as well.

Now, I’ve left it to them to make the next move.

Update (12.07p.m): Uche just called me from Nigeria, as I was proof-reading this article, to say he’s about to make payment. He made a special support request, which I’ve agreed to provide. Isn’t this a wonderful way to sell? I think it is!

Final Words: Power Positioning Will Make More Buyers Choose You Over CompetitorsLike THIS EXPERT!

About 10 days ago, a Saudi Arabia based Nigerian (while visiting Nigeria) requested payment details, after watching the video of my upgraded Ration Formulator software.

He then made the N20, 500 (about $136 US dollars) payment via bank transfer within 24 hours.

48 hours later, I’d sent him the “Feed Formulation Handbook PDF, along with the Ration Formulator Software Excel-VB workbook. This was in addition to the promised “FREE” copy of my 30 page PDF annotated pictorial introduction to livestock feed formulation ingredients.

We’ve only spoken once since then, and he’s promised to let me know if he has any issue making use of it for his feed mill based in his home state.

In all our interactions, I never had to chase any of them with emails or phone calls to take the next step (At the most, I could get in touch to ask “Did you get the xyz detail I sent at your request?”…but no more than that).

They all simply acted based on their own convictions – derived from exposure to my Power Positioning.

You, as an expert who also speaks to earn income, can attract more profitable clients by reading (and adhering to) the Ten Commandments of Power Positioning.

THIS EXPERT has used Power Positioning to make himself a foremost provider of Speaker Mentoring products and services, over 3 decades (Learn more)!

No. 100: Nothing Can Stop YOU…Except Greed

This issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter includes a true story of how, last weekend, a young man tried to “hire” me to “insert” an image of himself, into the photo of a giant aquarium he downloaded from the web! His purpose? To send the “Photo-shopped” version, with a quote, to a prospective client he’d told he could build giant aquariums!

In the rest of this piece, I highlight the fact that our true beliefs manifest when difficulties confront us, or when we want something badly. And I emphasize the need to NOT  let difficulties we face, or needs we have, “push” us to do the opposite of what we profess to believe!

If You’re Diligent, Honest, and Consistent, You’ll Always Get The Results You Want – ALWAYS!

I’m writing this from my home in Lagos, Nigeria. This is the first time since I left the country, on Fool’s Day – April 1st, 2013, that I’m working from here.

One of the main reasons I moved was the need for access to steadier power supply. And that has really paid off. My productivity has quadrupled as a result of that singular move. I exaggerate not.

But another reason was the annoyance of scam artists who operate a lot from here. The stigma still affects me even in my new base, in Benin Republic. But at least I run into those guys less often.

Having said the above, I have never let that problem bother me. My reasoning has always been that sooner than later, my target audience will realize it’s safe to do business with me.

And I’m NOT going anywhere. So when (not if) they do come round, they’ll find me right where they left me, doing what I do – ready to put my unique expertise and insight to work for them.

Rather Than Worry or Go Crooked, I Did Two Things, Repeatedly & Consistently

In essence, I’ve NEVER stopped believing that nothing can stop me. And that’s why today I’m achieving the amazing results people now recognise me for, within and outside Nigeria. And I continue doing them even today…now in fact…regardless of the recognition and accolades I’m getting.

1. I Took Regular Action to Make Tangible Progress Towards My Ultimate Goal

In case you do not know it, my ultimate purpose – through my Self-Development Academy Online platform – is to become the foremost provider of products and services (especially information and education) relevant to Self-Development, Workplace Performance Enhancement, Custom IT Solutions and Business Best Practice Systems Development in Africa – and one of the best in the world.

It has not changed since 2005, when I put it up on the About page on my website (click).

That is not an easy goal to accomplish. When I started www.spontaneousdevelopment.com in June 2005, very few (if at all any) who knew me, believed I could achieve anything worthwhile with it.

But my attitude has since won most of them over. Most have now become trusted sources of support!  In other words, I did not get here all by myself.

But, I had to FIRST of all show others that I believed in myself, to make them believe in me.

2. I Rejected Any Attempts to Lead Me Off My Preferred Moral Track

In simple English, I refuse to let greed, and desire for quick success, make me submit to the influence of dishonest others.

Here’s a brief but true story of a recent experience I had within 6 hours of arriving here in Lagos:

My 2 daughters insisted on accompanying me to a neighbourhood café, where I needed to finish work on a Joomla! project for a new client.

The 60 year old gentleman is a diplomat serving in Benin Republic. I was introduced to him for the first time in his office, less than a week ago. Twenty four hours after we met, he’d written me a cheque to move his farm business website into Joomla!, the dynamic and database driven Content Management System.

Interestingly, my purpose for visiting the embassy was actually to introduce samples of my Pineapple peel based drink, and request their support for my plan to give lectures to interested persons!

Can you see how taking real action in the above manner, opened doors of opportunities for ME in a totally unexpected way? I tell people this all the time: Just take action to do something!

But that’s not the “true story” I actually wanted to share with you…

You see, while at the café with my daughters, a heavily built young man walked in. I looked up, our eyes met, and we recognised one another. But I could not recall where we’d met.

As we shook hands, he told me “Hello Sir, I used to be an attendant at the Cyber café you frequented in Allen Avenue, Ikeja”. Then I remembered. It had been at least 3 years ago.

He said he needed a job done in Photoshop. I asked him to see the attendant. He returned to ask my help as the Cyber Café did not offer the service.

He told me it was urgent, and that he needed to send it to a client before midnight. In a bid to help him, I asked for details. He began showing me pictures – on his smartphone, of walled aquariums, obviously downloaded from some website. Then he came to a picture of himself standing next to a wall.

He then explained that he wanted that photo of himself to be “cropped”, and placed next to a beautiful walled aquarium in the other picture!

Oh oh…red lights began jumping around in my head :-)

I found myself wondering how stupid this guy thought I was. For one thing, if he truly built such aquariums, there would no need for this “doctoring” of photos.

He’d simply go to a past client and request permission to stand (possibly with the client), next to his handiwork, and take a picture to send to his prospective client.

I did not need a “seer” to tell me this guy was trying to win a contract for a job he could NOT do!

His likely plan was to get the advance payment and disappear. We hear these stories all the time.

To save my limited time, I simply told him I lacked the skills to do such “complex” work, and advised that he go down the street to the next café. He thanked me, and left.

People like that young man are driven by greed. And 9 times out of 10, those who get duped by them are often controlled by greed (e.g. the desire to pay what they know is a grossly LOW price, for something they know is worth much more).

Like they say, it takes two to tango.

Nothing Can Stop You From Achieving Lasting and Authentic Success – Except Greed

Greed blinds people to legitimate channels they can explore to achieve lasting success.

The desire to get something by cheating, or taking advantage of others is greed.  In other words, you want to get more than your fair share. Or to get what you are not entitled to.

I learned very early on in life that greed offers only a few “benefits” – all of which are short term. But it results in countless long term regrets!

So I trained myself to ignore it…a long time ago.

Greediness is a learned habit. Therefore anyone who wants to do so can unlearn it.

Check yourself.

Do you have any area of your life in which greed controls you?

Does it make you do what you know you should NOT?

If yes, take the firm decision today, to GET RID of IT from your life…permanently!

No. 96: Amaze Clients By Being Extraordinary!

**********

What you’re about to read is a simple – but very effective – formula for impressing people who pay for your services.

People who do extraordinary things often get called “amazing”. If YOU can learn how to habitually deliver extraordinary results, clients will call YOU amazing! It’s that simple.

This issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter describes a 3-part strategy you can use to achieve that goal.

1. First Agree a Scope of Work Using a FRS

In carrying out projects for clients, always agree a scope of work to guide you. This is always a good thing to do.

It gives a clear idea of what the client has paid for, and when it is to be delivered. That way, you avoid the uncomfortable situation, in which extra UN-PAID work, outside what was originally agreed, gets added to your schedule (i.e scope creep).

I learnt from painful experience never to leave that aspect untreated. As a result, today, most projects I work on for clients are based on a Functional Requirements Specification (FRS) document.

That instrument provides the formal basis, on which the client is to assess the final work I deliver.

And I found that clients who engage me often align their expectations to what we sign off on the FRS.

They rarely expect anything beyond what is on that signed document. And they also often accept that the job will be finished within the duration specified e.g. 20 working days.

2. Then Use The FRS as a Guide to Over-Deliver (3 Tips)

Now, the above state of mind YOU get the client into, is what eventually provides YOU with a unique opportunity to impress him/her. You just need to look carefully for those viable aspects to explore.

Here’s what I mean…

In the FRS, the delivery duration and specific deliverables (tasks to be accomplished) are outlined. As each one is delivered, the client is able to verify and tick it off.

Opportunity A: Firstly, what if you deliberately worked to deliver the finished work 5 working days earlier?

And I mean, the finished job – free from errors or defects that could cast doubt on your work quality.

Wouldn’t that be a pleasant surprise for the client? Quite likely!

Opportunity B: Secondly, what if you also threw in one or two extra services s/he knows would have cost a handsome sum, as a bonus – FREE?

Imagine you did this without saying you would. In other words, let it come as another pleasant surprise benefit to the client – who was not expecting it.

This would be a client who was already happy with what s/he was getting for the money s/he paid YOU.

Judging from my experiences, that bonus is like to make her feel even better about choosing YOU over any other person s/he may have considered.

Should the need to do so arise in future, it’s likely she’ll want to choose you, to feel that way again!

Opportunity C: Thirdly, what if in implementing tasks on the FRS, you went an extra mile for each one?

For instance, as Burt Dubin recommends to experts-who-speaker, after doing your normal program, you offer to do a FREE breakout session at no extra charge?

Or as a writer, instead of ten 700 word articles paid for by the client, you wrote twelve – and let her have the extra two write-ups at no extra charge? Plus, you made sure the articles you wrote were so good, that s/he could not help calling to say:

“Wow, they were all so beautifully written! I honestly cannot thank you enough. You’ve really exceeded my expectations. God bless you!!”

Wouldn’t that be a great feeling to have…in addition to that which would have come from getting paid your desired fees?

It certainly would!

I’ve had that experience more times than I can count. And I know it’s a great way to do what one loves.

Indeed, I’ve already had that experience many times since arriving here in Benin Republic 3 months ago.

Here’s an example in form of a real email compliment from a web marketing client in Cotonou:

Screenshot of an example in form of a real email compliment from a web marketing client in Cotonou:

3. Make Sure You Have the Competence to Over-Deliver In A Manner That Attracts Such Feedback!

To elicit such extremely positive reactions from clients, you must FIRST be really good at what you do.

The question therefore to ask is: “Are you that good right now?”

If you’re not, please DO NOT try to over-deliver for now. Instead, start working to improve yourself.

There’s a saying that “one must learn to crawl first, before trying to walk”. I recommend you do that…unless you don’t mind making yourself look like an ass :-)

Then again, some people actually learn how to be amazing that way too. It just happens to be more painful!

But if you are already reliably proficient at what you do, you can get started using this strategy I’ve described. Creatively develop variants to suit the way you work, or the people you serve.

Final Words: Be Consistent, and You Will Be Rewarded

This is a strategy I use with clients I serve, in my different areas of expertise e.g. Web Marketing Systems Development, Freelance Writing, Spreadsheet Solutions Development etc.

I developed my ideas mainly by studying and adapting advice provided by Burt Dubin in his writing, to suit my needs.

Burt used basically the same strategy, to rise from zero to success in real estate, sales/sales management, public speaking, and mentoring.

That’s why he strongly recommends delighting one’s clients in a similar manner i.e. by delivering incomparable performances, and unexpected extras.

Keep your fees intact. But give more than anyone who does what you do would in their right minds.

Do that consistently, and sooner than later, they are bound to call you AMAZING!

All three will get you to your desired destination of “speaking success-ville” – so long as you meet the requirements/play your part well (your fare, abide by the set guidelines etc). During the “flight”, the seat you have will determine how much personal service attention and preference the provider will accord you. It’s that simple :-)

So, make your choice:1. Top Shelf [Click here] | 2. Mid Range [Click here] | 3. Budget Delight [Click here]

No. 92: Caution – A Prospect With Money May Be Bad For YOU! (3 Tips)

**********

People are not the same in the way they approach pursuit of set goals and objectives. You may be willing to be focused and committed. But your prospect may not.

That’s why even when they have money, some people may not be good for you as clients. And if you take them on, things could end badly for you. You therefore need a reliable system to evaluate prospects, so as to choose clients who are a good fit for you.

This issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter discusses 3 checks you can use to protect yourself.

Human Beings Are Unpredictable

If you’ve been reading my speaking IDEAS newsletter, you know I advocate using public speaking as a business marketing strategy. So, in addition to pocketing a fee for speaking, it can get you hired to do what you do as an expert.

Delivering a speech requires you to be in control of yourself. That’s relatively easy.

However, working with people to achieve a preferred outcome can be more challenging.

And that’s because it involves the unpredictable human variable – outside of yourself.

Three (3) Checks You Can Use to Avoid Taking On a Wrong Client

First, I assume you’ve already established that the client has the means, and is willing, to pay you.

What follows are 3 useful checks you would be wise to do before saying yes to such a client – even if s/he offers loads of money.

If you want long term success, and would like to build on your successes, adopt them for use with clients.

1. Willingness to Commit Required Time & Effort?

You need the commitment of a client as the decision maker in her company, to get your work done. If she’s a solo entrepreneur, you’ll need her to be available to supply agreed data, finish tasks, review progress or take other decisions.

Get formal agreement on this. Else you may end up being accused of failing to deliver to the deadline, when in fact you lost time chasing her around to keep appointments with you.

This happened to me more than once. I’ve learned my lesson well!

2. Clearly Defined (and Realistic) Expectations?

What is the final outcome to look like? Does she know what she wants? If yes, is it something you can deliver? If no, let her know. Propose viable alternatives.

You’re the expert. Show that you know your stuff.

Don’t let the lure of money being offered trick you into saying YES, when you should say NO!

I use an MS Excel based Functional Requirements Specification (FRS). The client fills in the fields. We review the list together. In certain cases I point out something I do not think can be delivered (or measured) as specified. Or one not covered by the original scope of work.

Eventually we sign off the FRS. The client later uses it to check that I’ve delivered what s/he paid for.

If you cannot get a prospect to complete this process with you, it would be unwise to start work.

Indeed, this process can guide you to quote a better fee for your remuneration – and get her to accept!

3. Readiness to Take Ownership?

What about when you finish the job and hand it over?

Will she put your solution to use or implement the agreed actions as prescribed?

Let’s say you’re a physical fitness/weight loss expert for instance. And you’ve spent 12 weeks with an obese client – providing lessons on proper nutrition, and conducting physical fitness training sessions.

How can you be sure this client will CONTINUE to apply what s/he has learnt from you?

You could say it’s not your business. I however argue that if you indiscriminately take on clients who don’t follow through, you’ll end up shooting yourself in the foot.

Question: How?

Answer: They are likely to make you look like what you offer does not work.

You’ll consequently have fewer success stories to tell future prospects.

Consider also, the real possibility that such people may choose to deny they’re at fault, by claiming your methods did not work for them!

Final Words: Always Check to Be Sure You Can Help a Prospect Succeed Before You Say YES

Take Burt Dubin for instance.

He has helped many wannabes become highly paid international speakers over the past 25 years.

But to achieve this feat, he does not take on all comers. People actually have to apply for consideration!

Here’s what Burt said while speaking with Clarissa Burt on her show:

“You can’t just send me money. I have to feel I can help you succeed.”

It is this precaution he takes, that enables Burt guarantee success in the speaking business to clients. He KNOWS those he picks will diligently invest needed time and effort, to get results that will earn them MORE than they pay him!

I believe all service providers should emulate Mr. Dubin.

So, next time somebody comes waving money in your face for your services, don’t get so carried away.

Take your time to check that the person will be a good fit for YOU, as a client. Your success depends on this.

In the long run, you’ll be glad you did, because like Burt, you’re likely to have tonnes of testimonials and success stories for use in winning over more “good fit” clients.

Outsmart Competitors (& Earn More) Using Foreign Language Skills

This newsletter serves speakers, but service providers in general may periodically find some issues useful – like this one. Discover how developing ONE foreign language skill can help you (1) beat more competitors in your current market (2) win more business in new markets, and (3) make more money – despite harsh economic times.

This Will NOT Be Easy To Do!

I will not lie to you. What I propose in this piece will not be easy to do. But it can be done. I know, because I have done – and am still doing – it, even now. The long term benefits make it worthwhile.

So, you must purge yourself of any biases. Nothing in life that’s worth having is ever really easy – otherwise, everybody would succeed with little or no effort.

To outsmart your competitors (and earn more) using foreign language skills, I suggest 3 steps you can follow…

No. 88: Outsmart Competitors (& Earn More) Using Foreign Language Skills

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.sdacademy.org to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

1. Become Bilingual: Learn a Foreign Language Your Target Audience Needs

If you’re really ambitious, become a polyglot by learning multiple languages. However, I’d say carefully choosing one language your target market(s) can reward you for is best i.e. aim to become bilingual, by developing ONE useful foreign language skill.

That will give you a unique competitive edge your rivals will find hard to beat. This applies to service providers in any field. Unlike other skills, many people (especially those who consider themselves busy) simply find it hard to commit needed time and effort towards developing reliable proficiency in a foreign language.

That unwillingness on their part creates a great opportunity for you. All you need to do is choose the right language, and work hard to learn it.

Hiring a bilingual employee could also work well. However I argue that having functional competence in reading, writing, and speaking that language, as the top decision maker is what will really do the magic.

I say this from closely observing self-employed professionals who operate in this manner in Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Cameroon.

2. Go into Markets Few Others Care To Visit

The global economic crisis has reduced opportunities available in immediate local environments.  Sometimes you’re in your home country and market, and have to compete for clients with an overwhelming number of people who do exactly what you do.

Finding profitable projects therefore tends to be quite difficult.

But just across the border, there could be a demand for what you offer – in a contrasting scenario. Sometimes even right in your market the demand could be there.

Potential clients could be desperate to find help in your area of specialty: The only problem is, these they speak a foreign language e.g. French, Chinese, Italian etc

One example: As a legal consultant your services could be useful to fresh immigrants arriving in your country, and also to intending investors with limited English proficiency. That is of course if you could communicate effectively in their own language.

No matter how good you are at what you do, they will likely prefer a rival with reasonable familiarity with, their language, and possibly their culture.

3. Offer Solutions Few Others Care To Provide

Here are a few ideas…

a. Reach out to foreign business owners, and organizations (e.g. multinationals) – existing, or just arriving in your country/market to start business – and offer your services.

Example: A French speaking partner to a bilingual legal consultant friend of mine (knowing he cannot wing it) often sends him documents in English for translation. As a result, my friend earns extra income from both colleague and clients by being bilingual!

b. Travel to countries where your learned foreign language is spoken, and offer your services as a bilingual service provider. You can win projects to be executed there – and also win projects to be done back in your own country.

Example: In a French speaking country, for instance, you’re bound to come across business persons and professionals looking to explore opportunities at your end of the planet, but have always been held back by a lack of English speaking competence.

They are likely to jump at the opportunity to achieve their goals with your guidance.

I’m sure you can come up with more ideas when you think about it.

How Can Any of these Help Experts-Who-Speak (or those Aspiring)?

Now if you’re (still) wondering about how any of this can help experts-who-speak, I offer some insights, as one who is currently doing it.

I’m already getting invitations to deliver my talks on entrepreneurship here in Benin. Most people in the first set of audiences I’ll be addressing, are English speakers with a desire to learn French (many being from Ghana and Nigeria).

I plan to deliver my messages to them in a mix of both English and French – sharing anecdotes about my experiences in learning French.

Interestingly, this same foreign language skill is what attracts French speaking career persons, professionals and entrepreneurs out here to me. Many have told me how they would love to make themselves understood in English, they way I do in French.

When I complain that my French is bad, and that I need to improve it, they counter “Mais tu parles deja!” (i.e. “But you speak already!”). So they insist I speak English to them.

This “imperfect” language skill of mine already gets me noticed, making my offers compelling (especially since I also market a product to help others develop similar competence). But I refuse to rest on my oars. Using ideas described here, I continue working hard to improve.

Simply put therefore, a bilingual speaker often gets set apart from the crowd. She can explore opportunities (or joint ventures for learning events) in markets where her preferred languages are spoken. Her rivals who lack similar skills would be locked out.

Final Words: To Get Better Results, Do Something Radically Different

More importantly, to stay ahead of rivals and copycats, choose something they cannot easily replicate. In my opinion a foreign language skill would be a perfect weapon.

As I earlier noted, I’m currently practicing what I’m preaching, by traveling slowly across West Africa, as a Location Independent Entrepreneur.

We have more French speaking countries in West Africa, than English speaking ones. To explore Francophone markets for business opportunities, it therefore goes without saying that a working knowledge of French will come in quite handy.

Having learnt to speak, read and write French back in 1999, I’ve found it easy to functionally integrate into business life here in Benin Republic. And my newly launched Quick & Dirty English-French language guide for career persons and business owners is helping me connect faster with my target audience, resulting in new alliances and clients.

TIP: Make yourself a helpful resource to clients and prospects with language needs. Indeed to anyone with such needs. Doing so has endeared me to many English loving French speakers since I arrived here in Benin Republic. And they’ve introduced me to their networks of friends and associates, earning me increased visibility and credibility.

Interestingly, I’m now looking to return to Nigeria intermittently to offer my new range or products and services with a twist, that competitors will find hard to match!

You can do the same thing in your country and continent – wherever you may be. Learn French, Italian, Spanish or Chinese etc – to achieve the outcomes described above.

Good luck!

3 Reasons YOU Need To Learn Public Speaking

It may sound like I’m pushing it a bit here. But I honestly feel, based on over ten years of personal experience, that the practice of public speaking confers multiple life changing benefits on. In this issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter, I outline 3 specific ways in which learning public speaking can help you make the most of YOUR life.

Important Note: By the term “public speaking”, I am not restricting myself, in this piece, to acts in which a speaker has to step up on a platform to deliver a formal speech. Instead, I refer as well to those instances in daily social life, in which individuals use their speaking skills to exert influence and leadership on others – directly or indirectly. And this includes one on one interactions, as well as small or large group situations.

Having made that clarification, let’s get started.

No. 87: 3 Reasons YOU Need To Learn Public Speaking!

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.sdacademy.org to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

From our early years in school, to the working years and even after retirement (when we become “senior citizens”), the ability to speak acceptably attracts rewards and benefits in various forms. I explore 3 key examples below:

1. Increased Friendships and Personal Influence

“Speakers – especially successful ones – are often people who tend to know a lot of other people from various walks of life. And that effectively gives them access to potentially powerful channels of influence – even power” – Tayo K. Solagbade

A natural outcome of being a public speaker (especially if you deliver results) is that you’ll get invited to many different places. After every event, it’s likely that new connections will be made during the interactions that follow after the event.

Think about any public speaking personality you know. You’ll agree with me that many literally grow a wide network of often influential friends, and contacts as they go along.

The best part is that you can never be sure who will be in your audience. Sometimes you’ll speak at an event and afterwards get called to meet with a known name or influential personality in your field or industry, who happened to be attending that event.

If you impress often enough, such people may begin to refer to you in interactiing with others. Over time, you’ll find yourself being courted by others based on those references.

Just as this can happen for self-employed speaking professionals, it can also work for career persons who deliver presentations to senior colleagues in organizational settings. In the same way, young people in tertiary institutions (and even high school) can achieve similar results.

Every opportunity you have to address influential others in groups, or as individuals, can be exploited to achieve interpersonal impact that gets you noticed.

If you do it right, that impact can attract useful friendships to you, increasing your sphere of personal influence. For instance, a simple mention of your name – or sighting of your face – could make someone waive a rule (or fee) for you to get something you want.

2. Leadership and Career Success

In school participating in class, engaging in club activities, contesting for elective office, and so on. All require speaking and influencing other students. Deliberate study and practice of the art of public speaking by any school age person – possibly with coaching provided by reasonably competent adult (e.g. parents) – will equip her to excel amongst her peers.

It is assumed here that she will of course have the needed competence to carry out relevant tasks in each area of endeavor. In some cases, as key ability required for success will be that same public speaking competence e.g. as president of the student’s union or debating society, articulating convincing arguments in favor of position or cause.

A young person who does the above – even if not successful – will have received good preparatory foundation on which to build when she enters adult society. Quite often she will have a competitive edge over her peers in this area.

It is worth noting that recruiting companies usually prefer to young people who demonstrate evidence of having been active in that manner during their schooling years. Reason: It shows they already have useful skills and experience in leading and influencing others by asserting themselves.

3. Recognition and Fulfillment

One of the most powerful ways public speaking benefits a person is the opportunity it gives you to serve others by helping them succeed by sharing what’s worked for you.

In my opinion, there’re nothing better than being able to help others discover how to improve themselves using your ideas and knowledge. That kind of investment never fails to yield returns in multiple fold – not just to you, but also to your offspring.

“It is only as we develop others that we succeed permanently” – Harvey Firestone.

A good example of the goodwill that notable public speaking accomplishment attracts is the goodwill that Femi Kuti (and his younger brother Seun) enjoy as the offspring of the legendary Afro beat musician and firebrand Nigerian human rights activist – Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

In the same way, Tom Ziglar is accorded significant recognition today as Zig Ziglar’s offspring. None of this diminishes in any way, the accomplishments of these individuals in their own right. The point being made is that the public speaking successes of their parents provided a unique competitive advantage for them to launch their own careers successfully.

And such parents, more often than not, experience significant fulfillment while alive. I believe that’s a noble goal to aim for. That is, to achieve success, recognition for ones self, that can be built upon by those who come after us – like our offspring.

Final Words: This True Story Illustrates How Speaking Competently Can Literally Open Doors for YOU!

I feel it would be appropriate to include an example of how the above benefits can manifest. As usual I use personal examples not to brag, but to re-enforce my message.

In late 2002, I appeared on a popular Saturday morning show in Lagos, Nigeria called “Morning Ride” on NTA 2 Channel 5.

Mr Tunde Fajemisin, then Programmes Manager had put me on the show to answer questions about my little book titled “Proven 5 Step Formula for Learning ANY Language in 3 Months or LESS!”. I wrote that book based on my experiences in learning to read, write and speak French in 1999.

During the show, I had to field random questions, asked in rapid fire fashion, from a veteran presenter Sadiq Daba. At a point, Sadiz said “Oh, you’re an interviewer’s delight!” – his exact words. That told me I’d done a fairly good job with his questions

That Outing Was To Yield A Quick Pay Off On The Following Monday

(NB: I should note that it actually yielded results before Monday because my sister called me that weekend that her friend called her to say she saw me on TV, and wanted a copy of my book. Same happened with my mother, whose friend called her. And others.)

2 days later, I visited a bank in Surulere area of Lagos to cash a client’s cheque. But the security operative announced that it was after 4pm, and that they had closed to customers.

Now, I’ve never been one to take NO for an answer. It’s a habit that has gotten me many unexpected rewards. So I requested that he let me speak with one of the bank officers. He protested that nothing could be done. I politely insisted. Eventually, he went in to try.

To my surprise, the gentleman he returned with took one look at me and said “Hey, you were on Morning Ride on Saturday!” in an excited voice. Quite surprised, I replied that he was right. And that was all –he told the operative it was okay, and we went back in together, while he chatted with me about the show – and the book.

Now I know it’s not like anyone gave me a bag of money :-)

But at least I did not have to leave the bank without achieving my purpose for coming there. The next day I was able to set out without having to plan to re-visit the bank to cash that cheque!

In essence, I got what I wanted, when I wanted it. And it happens like that quite often, to competent public speakers.

Based on the above, you can see that you have more to gain – and nothing to lose – by investing a little time and effort to learn public speaking. A good place to start is by joining a toastmaster chapter in your area.

At some point, you may decide to step out of the amateur leagues to become an expert-who-gets-paid-to-speak, even internationally.

When that happens, consider learning from someone who – for over 25 years – has been a mentor of some of the highest paid speakers in the world. His name is Burt Dubin. Click here to send him a message. Tell him I sent you, and you’ll get a surprise offer.
