Outsmart Competitors (& Earn More) Using Foreign Language Skills

This newsletter serves speakers, but service providers in general may periodically find some issues useful – like this one. Discover how developing ONE foreign language skill can help you (1) beat more competitors in your current market (2) win more business in new markets, and (3) make more money – despite harsh economic times.

This Will NOT Be Easy To Do!

I will not lie to you. What I propose in this piece will not be easy to do. But it can be done. I know, because I have done – and am still doing – it, even now. The long term benefits make it worthwhile.

So, you must purge yourself of any biases. Nothing in life that’s worth having is ever really easy – otherwise, everybody would succeed with little or no effort.

To outsmart your competitors (and earn more) using foreign language skills, I suggest 3 steps you can follow…

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.sdacademy.org to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

1. Become Bilingual: Learn a Foreign Language Your Target Audience Needs

If you’re really ambitious, become a polyglot by learning multiple languages. However, I’d say carefully choosing one language your target market(s) can reward you for is best i.e. aim to become bilingual, by developing ONE useful foreign language skill.

That will give you a unique competitive edge your rivals will find hard to beat. This applies to service providers in any field. Unlike other skills, many people (especially those who consider themselves busy) simply find it hard to commit needed time and effort towards developing reliable proficiency in a foreign language.

That unwillingness on their part creates a great opportunity for you. All you need to do is choose the right language, and work hard to learn it.

Hiring a bilingual employee could also work well. However I argue that having functional competence in reading, writing, and speaking that language, as the top decision maker is what will really do the magic.

I say this from closely observing self-employed professionals who operate in this manner in Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Cameroon.

2. Go into Markets Few Others Care To Visit

The global economic crisis has reduced opportunities available in immediate local environments.  Sometimes you’re in your home country and market, and have to compete for clients with an overwhelming number of people who do exactly what you do.

Finding profitable projects therefore tends to be quite difficult.

But just across the border, there could be a demand for what you offer – in a contrasting scenario. Sometimes even right in your market the demand could be there.

Potential clients could be desperate to find help in your area of specialty: The only problem is, these they speak a foreign language e.g. French, Chinese, Italian etc

One example: As a legal consultant your services could be useful to fresh immigrants arriving in your country, and also to intending investors with limited English proficiency. That is of course if you could communicate effectively in their own language.

No matter how good you are at what you do, they will likely prefer a rival with reasonable familiarity with, their language, and possibly their culture.

3. Offer Solutions Few Others Care To Provide

Here are a few ideas…

a. Reach out to foreign business owners, and organizations (e.g. multinationals) – existing, or just arriving in your country/market to start business – and offer your services.

Example: A French speaking partner to a bilingual legal consultant friend of mine (knowing he cannot wing it) often sends him documents in English for translation. As a result, my friend earns extra income from both colleague and clients by being bilingual!

b. Travel to countries where your learned foreign language is spoken, and offer your services as a bilingual service provider. You can win projects to be executed there – and also win projects to be done back in your own country.

Example: In a French speaking country, for instance, you’re bound to come across business persons and professionals looking to explore opportunities at your end of the planet, but have always been held back by a lack of English speaking competence.

They are likely to jump at the opportunity to achieve their goals with your guidance.

I’m sure you can come up with more ideas when you think about it.

How Can Any of these Help Experts-Who-Speak (or those Aspiring)?

Now if you’re (still) wondering about how any of this can help experts-who-speak, I offer some insights, as one who is currently doing it.

I’m already getting invitations to deliver my talks on entrepreneurship here in Benin. Most people in the first set of audiences I’ll be addressing, are English speakers with a desire to learn French (many being from Ghana and Nigeria).

I plan to deliver my messages to them in a mix of both English and French – sharing anecdotes about my experiences in learning French.

Interestingly, this same foreign language skill is what attracts French speaking career persons, professionals and entrepreneurs out here to me. Many have told me how they would love to make themselves understood in English, they way I do in French.

When I complain that my French is bad, and that I need to improve it, they counter “Mais tu parles deja!” (i.e. “But you speak already!”). So they insist I speak English to them.

This “imperfect” language skill of mine already gets me noticed, making my offers compelling (especially since I also market a product to help others develop similar competence). But I refuse to rest on my oars. Using ideas described here, I continue working hard to improve.

Simply put therefore, a bilingual speaker often gets set apart from the crowd. She can explore opportunities (or joint ventures for learning events) in markets where her preferred languages are spoken. Her rivals who lack similar skills would be locked out.

Final Words: To Get Better Results, Do Something Radically Different

More importantly, to stay ahead of rivals and copycats, choose something they cannot easily replicate. In my opinion a foreign language skill would be a perfect weapon.

As I earlier noted, I’m currently practicing what I’m preaching, by traveling slowly across West Africa, as a Location Independent Entrepreneur.

We have more French speaking countries in West Africa, than English speaking ones. To explore Francophone markets for business opportunities, it therefore goes without saying that a working knowledge of French will come in quite handy.

Having learnt to speak, read and write French back in 1999, I’ve found it easy to functionally integrate into business life here in Benin Republic. And my newly launched Quick & Dirty English-French language guide for career persons and business owners is helping me connect faster with my target audience, resulting in new alliances and clients.

TIP: Make yourself a helpful resource to clients and prospects with language needs. Indeed to anyone with such needs. Doing so has endeared me to many English loving French speakers since I arrived here in Benin Republic. And they’ve introduced me to their networks of friends and associates, earning me increased visibility and credibility.

Interestingly, I’m now looking to return to Nigeria intermittently to offer my new range or products and services with a twist, that competitors will find hard to match!

You can do the same thing in your country and continent – wherever you may be. Learn French, Italian, Spanish or Chinese etc – to achieve the outcomes described above.

Good luck!

Parts 2 to 10 cover: Making enquiries (Renseignments), (Telling the time) Quelle heure est-il?, Numerals, Days/Months/Years, Market Transactions, Travelling Situations, Dining Situations, Emotional Expressions, Simple Sentences, Nouns related/connected to (1) the Human body (2) Animals (3) School (4) Farm (5) Human Relations; Common verbs and their conjugations etc.

PUBLIC SPEAKING EXERCISE – To Aid French Speakers learning the English Language!

In collaboration with my team members, a special event will be organised here in Calavi (Benin Republic) for persons who purchase copes of this guide i.e. French speakers who want to learn to speak English.

They will write short (one page) speeches in their favoured French Language, and we will help them translate to English. They will then be coached to deliver the English versions of their speeches to audiences as a way of helping them gain better grasp of the language.

This is an exercise I have personally benefitted from. My plan is to engage the support of sponsors – including my contacts in the local TV stations here, to publicise this event, to organise it for as many groups as are interested.

For details of how to get a copy of the guide (on CD/DVD or via download), send me a message via this form

What would you do if as the invited speaker for an event, you make the mistake of travelling (by air) to the right city, but in the wrong state, less than 12 hours to the event? That’s what happened to Burt Dubin in 1983!

As a mentor of world class speakers (for over 25 years), Burt encourages his protégés to be students of life – and to share their mistakes, in order to better connect with their audiences. In this teleseminar, Burt practices what he preaches by telling that story in a teleseminar hosted by Bryan Caplovitz of Speaker Match Radio.

What follows is a text transcript version I created from the audio.

Byran: In addition to being diligent and having tenacity, is that another key factor that you think a speaker needs to have? They need to be a great storyteller?

Burt: …I would say that yes, but more important than that, be a student of life. I have been a student of life, eh ever since my father abused me as a child when I was four years old. That’s another story I don’t think we’ll get into at this time, but I’ve always studied the human condition right from the time I was a child, wondering why things are as they are.

And from this study, the opportunity came to observe and I must say, to grow wise.

And it is important to allow yourself to grow wise about what’s going on in your world. What’s going on in your country, in your city, durng your times. And from all of these, you can take a step back, if you can take a step back out of the arena, if only for a few minutes a day and watch what you see. And…harvest such wisdom as there may be for you.

You see the world through your eyes.

Your perception of truth is indeed your truth. And it is important Bryan, when we stand before audiences to share our perceived truth based on such wisdom as we may have.

And if you share it with passion. If you share it with enthusiasm. If you share it with deep belief. If you share your perceived truth with real ah enthuse..(ehm I’m looking for a certain word…I guess I’ve used the word).

It is this passion that carries your message home. You may not be right – so to speak – in the eyes of everyone in your audience, especially if you have  a political view. However at least they will be able to see that this is your perceived truth.

So we go back to authenticity.

It is importsant that YOU, the speaker, whoever the speaker may be – this is for everyone on the call – speak with authenticity about matters which you know well. Speak with authenticity about matters which you know well.

You may not always be right, but your perceptions are yours.

And what about when you make a mistake?

Oh heaven knows everyone of us makes mistakes. I’ve made 10,000 or more. We’ll take that word apart. Mistake. MIS – TAKE. A mistake is only a MIS – TAKE: what do they do in the movies, when there is a MIS – TAKE?  they do it over.

I’ll give you an example.

I remember the time  I showed up (laughs) in the right city but the wrong state to present a program. This really happened. 1983.

Bryan: Right city, wrong state?

Burt: (Laughs) Ha…Right city, wrong state. You wanna know what happened in that?

Bryan: Sure

Burt: It really did. I showed up in Burlinghton, Vermont, because I was working with a travel agent at the time. I was speaking 4 or 5 days a week. And I had my travel agent do all my bookings. And I got all my booking cities from the person in charge of  the seminar company for which I was then working, way back then.

And she always gave me my cities by name of city only. So I went to my trusted OAG – Official Airline Guide – and there was only one Burlington in the OAG, and it was in Burlington, Vermont!

So I had my travel agent book me into Burlington, Vermont ten o’clock one night. Called the Howard Johnson, and asked if they had transportation from the airport. The first thing I noticed was they had the wrong area code.

I’m not such a dummy. I was in line when the brains were given out!

I realized they did not have the wrong area code. I was in the wrong area code! So, ten o’clock at nite, they roll up the sidewalks in Vermont at nine o’clock at nite. No flights out until the next morning. I am in big trouble!

I find a room for the night. I don’t get to sleep, and I wake up the seminar coordinator, and I say “Hey where am I supposed to be this morning”. And she said it was a different Burlington. It happened to be Burlington Massachusetts!

Thank God it wasn’t Burlington Illinois, it woud have been really serious.

So in the middle of the night, I did what I had to do. Called Air Vermont, got a flight out at 6a.m, from Burlington Vermont, to Logan airport, in Boston, from which I could get a limo and an hour later I could be in Burlington, Massachusetts (Laughing) to do the program.

I went througth all of that. But I turned it into fun.

I happened to like… happen to love Vermont maple syrup – and I’m in Vermont! So I got up very early – I didn’t even go to sleep, I slept about an hour – and put on my clothes.

I found a coffee shop – an all nite coffee shop, and at 4 O’clock in the morning, I had hotcakes with Vermont maple syrup  – Oh boy was that perfect!

Then I hightailed it to the airport. I got to Logan airport by 7a.m. Got to the venue by 8a.m and they all said “Where are you? Where’ve you been Where did you sleep last nite?”(Laughing)

Anyway the program I presented on adrenaline – just adrenaline – I got no sleep – was one of the best programs I ever did (Laughs). I thought you might like that little story.

Bryan: (Laughs) Ha ha…at least you remember it that way!

Burt: No..hey man that’s the way it was!

Bryan: So, that is another example of telling a great story. Do you includes stories like this of your life experiences, even when presenting your standard workshop or something?

Burt: Always. You see they are the lubricants. They…You know lubricant makes the wheel of commerce go round. These are the lubricants, they humanize you.

People love to hear about your mistakes!

FREE PDF REPORT: How to Get Kick As* Clients – By Jason Leister (www.artofclients.com)

FREE REPORT: How to Get Kick As* Clients - By Jason Leister (www.artofclients.com)

Just as I was putting finishing touches to the 15th April 2013 issue of this newsletter, Jason Leister’s e-mail broadcast to subscribers popped into my Blackberrry messages window.

Amazingly – in a theme consistent with that issue – he announced that he’s giving away his highly rated “How to Get Kick As* Clients” PDF report for FREE. Not optin required. Nothing.

Now Jason’s email offer’s arrival is an excellent example of one of those “coincidences” I mentioned will happen IF you take diligent action!

All he asks in return is that we spread the word about his PDF. That’s why I’m doing this. And it’s also why I’ll be creating a permanent link to it via a thumbnail image on my website.

Yes, that’s how much value I place on it: You see, in a tribute blog I published last year, I listed Michel Fortin as one of 5 mentors whose works really influenced me (another is Burt Dubin). It so happens that Michel has read Jason’s PDF. His review tells me it’s a gold mine. Period.

I intend to do my bit to see that Jason gets rewarded for his generousity. So click here to get your copy now – and don’t forget to spread the word. That’s ALL he asks. It’s the least we can all do…and it’s good Karma too :-)

What If a TV Reporter Requests To Interview YOU Live?

Can we ask you a few questions?“. What if the foregoing question was suddenly directed at you at a formal public event, by a TV reporter holding a microphone, followed closely by a colleague with a camera?

A live interview (on an important subject in your area of expertise), right on the spot. No opportunity to collect your thoughts. No prior warning. It can happen to anyone – including YOU.

I know this because it’s happened to me – more than once.

It pays to know your subject. But it pays even better, to know how to speak in a way that attracts powerful opportunities for zero cost media exposure, like the one mentioned above. I share my personal insights on this theme, in this week’s issue of my public speaking ideas newsletter.

It Can Happen to You: A Real Life Example

I’ll be sending out links to the video narrated version of the above presentation in a few weeks. It’s an Educational Commercial designed to help experts (sales/marketing experts, business executives, entrepreneurs etc) understand the tremendous promotional benefits of public speaking.

It features a special message from Burt Dubin, a renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid speakers. There’ll also be a video message from Claude Moller, a highly sought after conference speaker and coach, based in South Africa, who enjoys national and international level success that proves the ideas advocated in this presentation work.

No. 79: You’ve Been Invited to Speak on TV

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.sdacademy.org to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

It Can Happen to You (A Real Life Example)

I love listening to the radio. Compared to television, I find it gives me more value for my time. Both media have always been useful for getting the word out about almost anything or indeed anyone. Only their rates can be prohibitive for most small businesses or solo entrepreneurs.

That does not however stop us from listening to, or watching them. And it certainly does not mean we cannot get useful exposure on either medium for FREE.

Have you ever considered that? Instead of listening and watching others on those media, YOU could be the one others listen to and watch!

It could happen anytime, in one of a number of ways.

For instance, a journalist could pick on you after an event you attended, in which you’d made useful contributions as a member of the audience.

That’s one way in which it’s happened to me.

She was from a national TV network. Their branded equipment made that obvious – even before she introduced herself. I’d seen them moving around taking pictures and recording since before the start of the event – at the popular MUSON (Musical Society of Nigeria) centre on Lagos Island.

The event was an anniversary lecture. The guest speaker had discussed reasons why Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria often struggled to succeed, and how they could make better progress.

He was eminently qualified, boasting an impressive resume that revealed he’d worked over 2 decades in private and public service supporting businesses with financial services. And he did a great job with his talk.

This subject was however one that I felt (and still feel) strongly about. So much so that I’ve written many articles about it. So, as I listened to the speaker, I readily identified specific action steps MSMEs were not taking, that I felt could boost their progress faster, if adopted.

Like I’ve always said in this newsletter, when you have an opinion that’s based on your convictions about an issue, do NOT keep it to yourself. And don’t wait to become the guest speaker at a formal event to say it either. Sometimes, voicing it from the audience stand can be just as effective. And it’s always better than saying nothing. What’s more it could get you invited to say more!

For me, especially based on my experiences from years operating as an entrepreneur in the same environment, I knew more MSMEs needed to stop waiting on the government or other bodies to solve this problem for them.

My long standing opinion has always been that we (Nigeria – and possibly Africa – based business owners and decision makers) collaborate and cooperate too little. Instead we compete needlessly when it would mutually benefit us to form alliances.

When the guest speaker called for questions from the audience, I wasted no time in raising my hand.

I spoke for just about one minute. Only 60 seconds.

But what I said during that short interval – and HOW I said it – derived from the passion I had for the subject. And I really wanted those listening to use the insights I offered to use. It was not an ego trip for me.

To get my message across, I illustrated with examples of my experiences in relating with other MSMEs owners as clients and associates. The real life examples (not surprisingly – at least for me anyway) resonated strongly with many in the audience.

So, after we closed I had a few people walk over to commend me, ask what I did etc. I believe the impact I made may have been one of the factors that made the reporter seek me out for that interview.

TV/Radio Presenters Who Speak Poorly?

That young lady was quite impressive in the way she went about it all. Her questions were intelligent and delivered in an articulate manner.

And that struck me as not so common these days. I mean out here in this part of the world. The quality of speaking one hears on radio/TV (and the writing in print publications) is not confidence inspiring.

There was a time when I listened to presenters on TV and radio out here, to learn new words, how to pronounce those I already knew – and even how to speak well. People like John Momoh (owner of the award winning Channels TV), in his days as a news presenter made listening to the news quite pleasurable – for me.

Not surprisingly, his TV station today stands out from others because the training given his presenters makes them deliver to a similar standard when they come on air.

Sadly, too many others seem to have stumbled into TV/radio presenting. It would not be so bad however, if they took action to improve themselves. Instead, these individuals routinely come on air to display a disappointing lack of fluency, and an appallingly limited vocabulary.

For example, apart from periodic incoherence, a good number punish listeners by “hmm-ing, ehm-ing and aah-ing” at random. Such distractive speech mannerisms make listening less pleasurable for any audience. (For many with this problem, investing in Public Speaking Training could be a wise move.)

And that’s why whenever I’ve identified a presenter with such limitations, I routinely tune to a different station (or turn off the radio/TV), when s/he comes on air.

The above digression was done to show that regardless of the highlighted fallen (or falling) standards, developing speaking proficiency is still a wise thing to do. Especially if you anticipate speaking on radio/TV, either as the interviewer or the interviewee.

Presenters May Have Time To Redeem Themselves: You May NOT!

But it’s not just journalists who need to hone their speaking skills. Those who have to be their “guests” – even for short interviews – will also find public speaking expertise helpful.

Many people who present TV and radio programs do so on a regular basis. So, for those who work hard to improve on the shortcomings I highlighted above, there’s a chance they’ll eventually overcome them, and make more useful impact on their listeners.

When YOU are approached for an interview by a reporter, YOU may NOT reasonably expect to get another chance. I don’t mean a situation in which you’re in your car or on the street, and someone asks you what you think about a trending topic.

Instead, I refer to a case where your expert opinion on a serious topic is sought by knowledgeable journalists who may feature it in a report to be aired on TV/radio: An excellent opportunity to achieve valuable name recognition, and more.

You can make make the most of it, or blow it. To do the former, you need to be prepared.

I assume you are a master of your subject. If you’re not, that’s the first problem you need to address – FAST. Once that is done, your public speaking proficiency will determine how well you do with a sudden “interview” opportunity (You could get quoted, and possibly invited for longer sessions).

Public Speaking mastery implies knowing how to manage fear, anxiety, and thinking on your feet, to competently address a formal audience, your area of expertise.

Are you comfortable doing that yet?

If you are, I propose you learn to do it even better.

If you’re not, I suggest you seriously consider getting public speaking training today!

Everyone Needs Coaching – Even YOU

PREVEIW: This week’s issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter is based – in part – on excerpts from my latest ebook titled “Why You Keep Failing To Achieve Your Writing Goals!” – for which I recently published a press release.

No. 63: Everyone Needs Coaching – Even YOU

This week’s issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter is based – in part – on excerpts from my latest ebook titled “Why You Keep Failing To Achieve Your Writing Goals!” – for which I recently published a press release.

Even if you’re on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there” – Anon

I’m good at learning and doing new stuff by myself. Yet, I readily take advantage of any opportunity to improve myself by learning from others.

My personal philosophy is based on the principle of continuous improvement, and this corresponding definition of success:

“Success is a journey in the never ending pursuit of excellence – and not a destination.”

I happen to believe I can learn from anyone regardless of age, gender, race or any other factor. As far as I’m concerned, as long as that person knows (or can do) something I want to know (or be able to do) to become better, s/he can be my coach. Period.

Those who know me will confirm I practice what I preach.

This attitude has helped me achieve tremendous success in a wide variety of endeavours – to the surprise of many.

And that’s why I also make a point of giving credit to those who “coach” me to success in any areas of my life.

My First Personal Paid Coach

For instance, up till this day, I tell all who will listen, that my strong foundation in basic HTML, which proves so valuable – even today – in managing my websites and blogs, was developed way back in 1998.

Back then, over a period of about 8 weeks (of one-on-one personal paid coaching), Victor – a light complexioned teenage operative in Benin city’s Prest Cyber Cafe painstakingly taught me most of what I know today about HTML website design.

Understand this: I was a high performing middle level manager in a large corporate multinational. When the Internet “movement” came into town, I quickly saw the opportunities it could create for me.

So, in my usual early adopter manner, I went all out to find out what I could do to get competently involved in its use. A few visits to cyber cafes around soon made it clear there was a lot to learn before one could graduate from being just a content viewer/user on the Internet, to become a contributor (e.g. content publisher) on it.

And I instinctively knew I wanted to belong to the latter group. So, I dispensed with my advanced spreadsheet applications developer “bragging rights” earned inside my company, and accepted the humble cap of a “website developer wannabe” – with my teenage coach.

For me, it took only a few seconds to make this mental switch.

I however realise that for some people in a similar position (especially in my part of the world), it may take considerable effort to do what I did.

That is: to “travel by bus” – everyday – from my air conditioned office, to a run down cafe on the other side of town, to learn from a “small cyber cafe operator boy” who did not even have any formal credentials to show :-)

Build On What Your Coach Gives You

The way I saw it, all I needed to know was that he could create web pages using HTML code in notepad, and add (at the time) impressive looking GIF animations to them.

That was enough for me. And I knew that once I had learnt the basic stuff from him, my well developed aptitude for self-tutoring would take over.

It’s over 14 years afterwards, and that’s exactly what has happened.

Without attending any other formal coaching classes, I have successfully built on the foundation Victor gave me, to become highly proficient at developing websites, and other web based resources.

But even during that time, I’ve periodically identified a need to get coached by different people in other areas of interest. So, you see, it’s a continuous process.

And it should be that way for every person who wishes to operate at close to his/her fullest potential at all times. No one ever knows it all.

We must continually strive to improve ourselves – even when people already call us the best. That’s what keeps true champions at the top of their fields (or sports) for decades on end e.g Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Michael Jordan etc. You know their kind :-)

Not Everyone Can Successfully Self-Tutor: Coaching Support Can Take You To The Next Level!

Fifteen years of coaching people from different backgrounds and age groups, have however taught me that not everyone is comfortable with self-tutoring like I am.

This does not mean they are weak. We all just have different learning styles. Some of us do better when we have someone – constantly available – to guide and challenge us (and even cheer from the sidelines), as we aim for new heights of achievement.

Indeed, certain people who have already reached a respectable level of success may now need coaching intervention to revamp their “plateaued” careers!

For instance there are the seeming one-hit wonders in different fields e.g. The guy who made it big last year and has since “gone quiet”. Quite often coaching support can help such persons rediscover themselves.

A coach can guide you to effectively address factors that may be affecting your progress. In addition s/he can help you hone your skills so that you become better over time.

Even people who are already doing well, look for coaching support to improve themselves. This applies to all areas of our lives – including public speaking.

Avoid The Trap of Thinking You CANNOT Need Help

As experts-who-speak, there’s a real danger of assuming that because people look up to us for learning or information, we may not need anyone to learn from.

The reality is however very different. Majority of the world’s most productive people have been known to readily acknowledge specific people in their personal and work lives for providing them with valuable coaching feedback.

The relationship may be formal or semi-formal (like the one Oprah Winfrey shares with her popular fitness and health coach). At other times it could be informal – like the one Michael Jordan shared with his late father.

What is important to note is that these successful people realised they needed help to not only stay at their best, but also to improve on their achievements.

The minute you conclude you have nothing new to learn from anyone else, you set a trap of ultimate retrogression for yourself.

And it WILL show through eventually – because when you do not seek ways to add value to yourself, you will eventually run out of “value” you can add to others. And those who learn from you will eventually discover that you have less to offer.

When you no longer add value to audiences as a speaker, guess what will happen when next they seek a speaker for their event…? Your phone may probably not be the one that rings…I’m sure you know what I mean :-)

Final Words: Nature, Indeed Life As A Whole, Abhors imbalance!

The Chinese famously talk about the opposing “Ying” and “Yang” life forces. In science we learnt about action and the equal and opposite reaction.

You and I – we all – are a part of a balanced universal ecosystem. You cannot be different when it comes to this rule: you must strike a similar balance in your own life, otherwise you will struggle to achieve your full potential.

Yet again, the amazing (late) Jim Rohn comes to my rescue with another very apt quote:

“We could all use a little coaching. When you’re playing the game, it can be hard to think of everything.” – Jim Rohn

So, let me now urge you to take a deep and honest look today at yourself. Where are you NOW, in your career as an expert-who-speaks?

Ask yourself if you could do better than you are currently doing.

Then look around (online and off the net) for persons who can help you improve yourself.

It’s important to emphasise here that you do NOT necessarily have to make direct contact with the individual you decide to make your coach.

If s/he offers resources like websites, blogs, newsletters you can use to gain access to his/her “wisdom”, start with those. Then over time, gravitate towards making direct contact if/when you feel prepared to take your relationship to that next level.

Sometimes what you get through the remote resources may end up being all you need. At other times, you may discover you need more personalised attention via paid telephone mentoring and so on.

What’s important is that you take action to get the coaching help you need. By so doing, you’ll be better positioned to achieve your most valued goals. And one day you will look back with a sense of fulfillment at your worthwhile accomplishments.

Hi,

Please find below the latest issue of my weekly Public Speaking Ideas page for 2012.

=====

No. 56: When to Walk Away…

Not every prospect or client that comes along with an offer will be a good fit for you. Knowing when to walk away is therefore a valuable skill.

If you accept work from everyone who makes an offer, there’s a good chance you’ll hurt your business eventually.

Many business owners make this mistake at least once. And it can be quite hard to get over. Sometimes they make the mistake because they need the business. Or because they got carried away by a wave of success and let their defenses drop.

So, they fail to notice the obvious warning signs that appear during their discussions with a prospect or client.

This can lead to a humiliating experience for them. For instance, they could end up negotiating in a needy manner…allowing the client dictate what to pay, how to pay and when to pay (to paraphrase Jason Leister) – and even how the work is to be done.

I’ve made these mistakes many times in the past. I sometimes did so because I wanted to “help” the clients. Unfortunately, some clients interprete such willingness to imply you’re desperate for work. And they naturally seek to make the most of the opportunity.

If you give in, you only set yourself up for a figurative uppercut from greedy clients. Not a smart way to do business. Such clients ONLY care about themselves. They will say – and do – anything to get what they want. And that includes telling bare faced lies.

Here are three warning signals to watch out for:

1. Carrot Dangling: An elderly prospect once said to me…

“Look, the board hasn’t released the main funds yet. So, we’re not exactly buoyant right now. If you speak for a low price now, there’s a big conference we’re planning to do in a few weeks. We’ll simply award it to you. Let’s just get to know each other with this one by using it as a run up to the main job you’ll be doing for us.

I’ve heard this line from CEOs of hotels, the training manager of a government agency and even church leaders. Not one came through with the promised follow up work!

With those lessons in my experience bag, I now give the following polite response to others who try using the same line on me:

That’s okay. Let’s just do what you can afford to pay for now. When your funds are released, we can always continue from where we stopped. I personally prefer working on the bird in hand.

And like I’ve written elsewhere, I always do it with a big smile on my face. Some still take offense though, telling me I’m too rigid. Hmm…I hear you!

2. Reluctance to Talk Money: Sometimes you’ll meet a prospect or client who talks all about the work s/he wants done, and asks a battery of questions to confirm you are competent.

But s/he never asks what your fees are, or how much it will cost to deliver your talk program. When this happens, watch out!

Such persons usually come unprepared to offer worthwhile remuneration. And when you do bring it up, they’re likely to favour haggling as opposed to negotiating. Most times, such exchanges will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

If you notice the above warning signal, prepare to walk away. The client and his/her offer may not be a good fit for you.

3. Tag Teaming: Some prospects/clients may try to put you in direct competition with another provider, who more often than not WILL be in on the game they’re playing. They create the impression that someone else is ready to do the job for next to nothing. This is so as to force you to accept a much lower fee that you normally would.

Here’s a real-life example of how you can handle an attempt to treat you this way:

We were discussing details of the final aspect of a project he wanted to assign to me, which I was to give him a quote for.

But Tayo, the other guy who does my programming can also do this, and I’m sure he’ll do it for next to nothing.” said the client.

Then he went out to the outer office, brought back the other guy, and went through the motions of explaining what the issue was, to him.

The “programmer” (not surprisingly) said “Of course I can do it. In fact, the method I’ll use will produce equally good, if not better reports”.

The client (now literally drooling at the thought that I’d cave in) said:

That’s what I was just saying. The only difference is that Tayo’s method is a bit faster. Otherwise, your method can deliver the same output that his does. In fact I’m thinking maybe Tayo should hold on and let me try your way first.”

As I watched them, I knew it was time to walk away. I’d seen a “Tag team act” before. And I disliked the exploitative intention.

So, I said “I have a better idea. Why not simply use his solution? There’s no point killing a fly with a hammer. Once his solution already meets your needs, why pay to get mine?

Both men looked up at me in surprise. I pretended not to notice. “No, no. You don’t understand. I think I’ll still need to come back to you” the client blurted out.

I countered by saying: “But why? From what your man here has said, he has a solution that will work just like you want. To be honest, I’m a bit relieved and also happy for you. At least you won’t have to spend too much to get what you want.

I threw in a few jokes for effect, as we debated the matter. But I gently pressured them to accept my proposal. Their smiles were noticeably strained as I shook hands with them and departed. But I was done. I wasn’t going to let anyone keep me dangling on a string.

However, it did not end there.

Three weeks later, the client called. By some strange coincidence, I was right across the road from his office at the time. So, when he asked if I could pop in, I agreed.

I arrived to learn they had some issues manipulating Excel database records using the other guy’s method. He needed to query the database to isolate unique records. “What’s the problem?” I asked. He said “When I do it, I keep getting duplicates in my results.

I replied “Well I initially had a similar challenge, and found a way around it. Just specify additional criteria from the database fields to enable you eliminate the duplicates. Unfortunately, I don’t know your method. But you understand what I mean, right?

He nodded and smiled uncomfortably, mumbling something about the data provided by the client not being “clean”. I pointed out that I’d had to contend with that same challenge. “Do what I did – help him clean it where possible!” I said with a smile.

At this point I thought: “I don’t want to be pulled any further into this. The sooner I get out of here, the better.” So, I politely excused myself and left (with the client saying “Ah, you’re always in a hurry. Anyway, I’m still going to call you etc”).

Conclusion

Once again I had known when to walk away – with my dignity intact. I’d shown my willingness to clarify issues relating to the work I’d already done. But as soon as I’d established that the problem they were having had nothing to do with me, I knew it was time to leave. If the client wished to bring me in, we would have to discuss that.

Not knowing when to walk away can set you up to be exploited. You’ll come away feeling used and dumped. And you’d have no one to blame but yourself. I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end. And I’ve learnt to protect myself. You should too.
