This is not the first time I’ll be doing a verbatim audio to text transcription of this kind. In the past, I’ve created similar resources from interviews and presentations with other experts and professionals.

Two examples are Burt Dubin (who I represent as Sole Agent on the African continent, for his speaker mentoring products and services), and Patrick Meninga (the gentleman who achieved fame as a blogger by building a $2,000 a month adsense website while working full time, and then selling it for $200,000).

“But why do I do it?” many people are likely to wonder?

Is it to get publicity, or to get those I feature to notice me and give me jobs? What is my real motive?

1. My main reason is that I want to help people discover proven techniques and strategies they can use to IMPROVE themselves in whatever area of endeavour they are engaged.

That’s why I call myself a Self-Development/Performance Enhancement Specialist & Multipreneur.

I have a passion that has endured for over 20 years (right from my days as a student in the University, through my time as a high flying employee in Guinness Nigeria), to help serious minded and results focused individuals develop and implement practical strategies to do what they do better.

Due to my versatility, and quick learning ability, I have over the years proven myself to be a valuable addition to the arsenal of any group or organisation.

So many people find me to be a useful resource because my active search for practical information about what works enables me add value to them. Anywhere I go, whatever I see or read, my natural instinct is always to find ways to share it with others to help them improve their performance.

I’m the kind of person who cannot help HELPING others. I am naturally driven to be a catalyst. No matter who I interact with, I create the impression of increase. People generally find that they are better off when they leave, than they were when they met me.

Most of my clients often get much more measurable value from interacting with me, than they pay for.

I work this way not because I want to be Pope, or because I’m a priest, but because I LOVE to see people make the best use of their God-given abilities to achieve their fullest potential – NO MATTER what challenges they have to confront and overcome in life.

And that is why I pick on videos and presentations of authentic achievers, whose messages convince me they are who they say they are.

Due to the challenges of poor connectivity in my part of the world, I realise many who desire to benefit from the wonderful video and audio presentations available online may not get ready access to them – except via text transcripts like those I create.

This is why I create my verbatim transcripts and offer them free.

2. Another reason I make these transcripts is to contribute to the work done by those who create these FREE presentations.

Their willingness to share their knowledge and insights at no charge to the target audience, as a way of gaining name recognition and credibility deserves to be encouraged.

Doing so gives people who seek help, an opportunity to make more intelligent hiring or buying decisions. Their competitors or rivals, who do not offer such presentations naturally get challenged. They must show what they are made of in a similar way, if they wish to be taken seriously by the target audience.

Ultimately, a healthy atmosphere is created for “buyers” of their products and services to make safer and more rewarding purchases. By creating these verbatim transcripts I believe I contribute my own quota to the above, and I like that.

Of course, it goes without saying that all the parties involved also get to know me. And that will certainly help ME as well. But even if it did not, I would still do it.

3. A third reason is to demonstrate to the featured (and other) experts, an EXAMPLE of practical ways they can re-package and re-present the same material to achieve wider reach and impact.

In providing Web Marketing/Performance Enhancement services to clients, this is a habit I encourage them to develop. That is, to explore as many intelligent and cost-effective ways as possible, to present themselves to the target audience.

4. Lastly, I do it to distil useful learning summaries &/or develop Actions Plans for target audiences to adopt.

I am not unaware of the availability of software used for transcriptions. However, you see I also LOVE to learn – and to help others learn better. That’s why I extract or “distilled” lessons from each interview.

Forcing myself to do the manual transcriptions enables me listen REPEATEDLY to the material, until I internalise most of it. Then over a few days I let it “cook” within me, and soon enough, the “lessons” to be had from it become apparent.

I then write and publish it as a blog post – linking to the verbatim transcript. That’s what I have done with other transcriptions. And that’s what I will do with THIS one.

I have found that this method dramatically boosts comprehension rates of people. Not everyone can readily extract a useful summary of learnings, and develop action points by watching a video, or listening to an audio recording.

Why You Should Write To Share Your Knowledge

For centuries, ideas that influenced societal happenings have been communicated in written form for others to read and reflect upon. Religious and political bodies use the written word to propagate their messages. You may not believe it. But there is something you know which some others NEED – if you would only write about it. In this article, I explain how – by writing to share what you know – you can make the lives of others better. And by so doing, you’ll contribute to the development of people in your society – and even beyond! .

What If Napoleon Hill Had Not Written Think And Grow Rich?

What would this world have been like if Hill had not written that wonderful book? Think back to all the successful people you know who have mentioned that reading THAT book transformed their lives. Imagine if they had never read the book i.e. it had not been written. The implications would be multiple fold. Let’s consider a few examples.

Maybe today, Dr. Walter Doyles Staples would not be the accomplished person whose works have been a source of education and inspiration for thousands of people worldwide. Robert Kiyosaki would probably not be the person we know today, whose personal childhood stories and reflections have influence a thousands to rethink their approach to the education of their kids. And the need for a reform of our traditional educational system, to help their kids succeed in life.

You Can Change Lives Through Your Writings

By writing, we give others the opportunity to embark, more intelligently, and therefore with greater chances of success, on a journey that we have made. Anyone who has applied honest and diligent effort to a particular cause, can write competently about what s/he has done. And it would benefit others who desire to pursue a similar goal.

Now here’s an interesting poser about Robert Kiyosaki. Millions of adults worldwide have bought his books and followed his advice about how to educate kids to achieve financial independence. And they did this even though they knew Robert and his wife(Kim) had kids of their own. Have you ever wondered about that?

Well, I have. And the ONLY logical explanation for what should have been an unreasonable action on that part of the parents is this: They (wisely) chose to look beyond Robert NOT being a parent. Instead, they focussed on the intuitive common sense logic of the ideas he presented. As many stated in their written testimonials about Roberts books, those ideas resonated with those they had themselves battled with, during their own childhood years!

When I read those commentaries/testimonials by people (including kids), I could not help wondering: Would they have ever taken any corrective action for their own kids’ sake, IF someone like Robert had not written about his experience? So again, we’re back to the questions with which I started this article: What if Robert had never written his books? One thing at least is certain: our thinking about how children should be educated to achieve financial success in life, would be worse han it is now. That is the value that Robert’s writing has added to millions of lives the world over – mine inclusive (the distance between our continents of residence notwithstanding).

Many People Who Should Write Are NOT Writing

In many societies, people undergo unique experiences of all kinds on a daily basis. For each person, the learning acquired through those experiences literally shapes who they become over time, and ultimately determines whether or not – or better still how well – they succeed.

Each one of us can draw upon such experiences, to teach others how to deal with them successfully, should they encounter similar challenges in their lives.

Each one of us has a distinguishing trait or quality that sets him apart from others who do what s/he does. Therefore if you were to write a (non-fiction) book or article based on your area of competence or experience, there’s a good chance that someone will find it useful.

It might help to inform (or remind) you, that even Napoleon Hill was initially plagued with self-doubt, when Andrew Carnegie first asked him to write "Think And Grow Rich". Hill worried – among other things – that he was not "qualified" or "competent" enough – at the time – to write it. But thankfully, he eventually brushed those fears aside, and did us all a favour by writing the book that today has changed millions of lives for the better.

You Don’t Need A Teaching Qualification To Share What You Know With People Who Need It!

Let’s say a person who survived years of isolation as a prisoner of war, decides to write a book about what he went through. Do you think he would need to get a writing degree to do that? Or indeed to speak to audiences in seminars about (a) what it feels like and (b) how to survive under such situations? Of course not. We’re talking about personal experience here. Nothing beats that. Not even the biggest academic qualifications in the world!

Now, even if you feel you cannot write the story by yourself, you can engage the services of a freelance writing professional. It is worthwhile to note however, that developing your writing skills would ultimately enable you do more spontaneous writing than you could if someone was doing the writing on your behalf.

You Can Write While Still In The Process Of Acquiring The Experience(s)

Incidentally we need not wait until we have achieved the goal we pursue, before we can write for others to learn from us. A person who never won the gold as an athlete at the olympics, could draw from his/her "failures" to coach a younger athlete with potential to win the gold.

Taking this further, a person who has "failed" in a bid to achieve a goal could, with a positive mental attitude, articulate a set of learning points about what caused him/her to fail. S/he would then use them to teach others (one-on-one or through a book or article) about what to do to increase their chances of success.

You do not need to wait till you become the Managing Director of the company you work for, before you begin to share the useful learnings about achieving career advancement, that you pick up along the way. This is because while you are busy "climbing", others coming after you will be in the process of taking the decision to start "climbing". And compared to you, they will be less experienced or knowledgeable about what to expect.

Many of them are likely to appreciate hearing from you, up front, some hints about what they will face during their journey. And how you dealt with the challenges that cropped up – including what you think they can do to make good progress.

In my case, I am sharing insights gained from my experiences as an entrepreneur, through writing articles and books, and in daily interactions. Begin documenting as much of your own experiences as possible. This will equip you over time, to share useful learning with others, and make their journey less difficult.

No one person has the duty of teaching others about how to succeed in life. Every one of us can teach what s/he knows to those who need to know. And one effective way to do it is by writing. And unlike speaking, it is also more enduring: once you’ve written it, you will not need to write it again. And all who want to read it, will always be able to do so, when they go to the library, bookstore or website where it is available to get their copy.

I Found Supporting Evidence That "You Need To Write", In Dr. Spencer Johnson’s Book: "Who Moved My Cheese"!

Who better to tell you what it feels like(or takes) to survive as a start-up entrepreneur, if not someone currently in the struggle – or recently out of it?

If you wanted to get an authentic update on the socioeconomic situation in Nigeria, would you ask your “Professor Uncle” who travels once-a-year to Lagos on official visits? Or would you ask your Aunt who lives in Lagos, and visits New York on business every other month? The latter of course.

The above is why I chose to start writing about my experiences early in my entrepreneurial career, rather than wait till I get “up to the very top” before doing so. But I got even more convinced that this was the right thing to do, when I read the little book titled “Who moved my cheese?” written by Dr. Spencer Johnson.

The Book’s Parable About Hem & Haw(2 little people) As Well As Sniff & Scurry(2 Mice)

The book narrates an engaging parable about 4 characters – Sniff and Scurry (2 Mice) and also Hem and Haw (2 little people). The parable illustrates the various ways different people react to unexpected changes/setbacks that occur in their lives on a daily basis.

It admonishing us to learn to laugh at ourselves, and the mistakes we make in life – so as to be able to learn from them and “move on” with our lives. Dr. Johnson uses the analogy of “moving cheese” to illustrate how our circumstances/situations in life will inevitably change. He argues that we all need to be prepared for those changes when (not “if”) eventually they occur. If we’re prepared, and we respond quickly and intelligently to them (instead of protesting and complaining), we will often find that we end up being better off in the long run.

Dr. Johnson takes the reader through a series of scenarios in which the 4 characters employ various methods to deal with the unexpected changes. The 2 little people – Hem and Haw – unlike the mice, had major problems getting over the setback (not surprising is it? A typical human reaction!) and moving on with their lives. Hem in particular remained adamant that it was “unfair” for the cheese to have been moved. And he prevailed on Haw (who over time became more disposed to trying to find a way out of the fix they were in), to stay with him till things “returned to normal” – or until “someone gave them an explanation” for moving their cheese.

Remember! It’s a parable. If you think about it, sometime in the past(or possibly even now) some of us may have been just like Hem. Never seeing any good in a change that affected us (in our opinion) “negatively”. An example: a lateral movement from your job to another seemingly less glamorous one in your company.

"Haw" Starts Writing To Share What He Learns BEFORE He achieves Success

And here’s the lesson I picked up from the book: At a point, Haw decided that since the mice had taken off in search of another cheese almost immediately the initial cheese had moved, he would do the same. So, he left Hem, (after trying without success to get him to go along), sitting and complaining, and began his search.

As he journeyed, he made a lot of new discoveries, gaining new and fresh insights that excited him a great deal. In fact, he found the learnings he picked up while trying to find new cheese so profound, that he decided to write each learning on the wall (in form of a short phrase). This was so that anyone who was coming along after him, would benefit from the knowledge he had discovered.

Examples of the phrases he wrote are: “If you do not change, you can become extinct”; “When you move beyond your fear, you feel free”; and “Imagining myself enjoying new cheese even before I find it, leads me to it”.

I have chosen to adopt the method used by Haw, by writing to share my experiences even before I get to the "top" as an entrepreneur.

Even before he found new cheese, Haw began to share the little knowledge he was picking up along the way/during the journey.

He felt (quite rightly too) that there was no point waiting till he got to the “end” of his journey, and found new cheese, before he shared the little he already knew.

This was because he recognised that he was experiencing useful – though sometimes painful – lessons that could benefit others tremendously, if they knew them before facing similar challenges.

Summary

I personally believe that it takes strength of character and tremendous self belief, to repeatedly share painful lessons learnt in the pursuit of a challenging goal(s), especially while still working to achieve it(them).

Another lesson we can take away from Dr. Johnson’s book, is that we can each move our own cheese (become “masters of our fate”), instead of waiting for others to do it for us.

Years ago, I chose to move mine by leaving the comfort of what should have been a comfortable job in a corporate organisation, to follow my longstanding vision of running my own businesses. I also decided that I wanted to spend much of my time, sharing with others my achievements in various areas of my past, present and future endeavours.

We need to share information/knowledge and discoveries about life, and how to live it better, with each other. We need to do so regularly, and with passion. Our actions in this regard must be borne out of a genuine desire to enrich the lives of others, and help them get ahead like we are doing.

A society where this happens continually, and spontaneously, would be a very successful one. Many developed countries are already on the path toward attaining this state.

Developing countries which desire to achieve similar progress, will need to challenge many more of their members to share more often – and selflessly.

Writing is a powerful and cost-effective way to do this. Any society that wishes to develop fully, MUST encourage her members to write – and read – as frequently as possible (especially non-fiction). You can play a role today in the development of your own society. Do this by acquiring qualitative experiences in the pursuit of worthwhile goals, and writing to share what you learn to help others do the same .

A Key To Livestock Farming Success

Many livestock farmers out here frequently start out with little knowledge of animal nutrition. And yet some successfully manage their businesses with profit for reasonable periods of time. Seasoned extension specialists and farm business support experts have variously made this observation over the years.

The above shows just how much potential exists to do even better, if such farmers were to improve their level of know-how.

In Tough Times, Farmers With Know-How Rule

And if there was ever a time for such farmers to step up their game, it’s now. Hard times are forcing businesses to re-invent themselves. With tough times persisting, farm business owners with better know-how, are the ones who stand a better chance of surviving – and even prospering.

Their sound knowledge equips them to develop more efficient farm management processes. And that includes formulating least cost rations – as against lowest priced rations.

A Least Cost Ration Should Not Be Confused With a Lowest-Priced Ration

They sound alike. But that’s where the similarity ends. The least cost ration is what any smart farmer, who wants his/her commercial farm animals to flourish, will strive to prepare for them. And s/he will understand that such a ration is unlikely to be the cheapest to make.

Not-so-smart (or penny wise…) farmers tend to fall into the trap of going for lowest priced rations. That mistake ultimately costs them via poor performance of their farm animals.

Every farmer who wishes to make the most of formulating rations for his/her animals needs to understand what a least cost ration is, and why that is what s/he should aim for.

A least cost ration is the lowest cost formula that contains all the nutritional ingredients needed for optimal performance of the animals to be fed with it. 

The lowest priced feed formula is usually NOT one that will produce optimal performance, since performance depends not only on price but also on efficiency of utilization.

Summary

It therefore goes without saying that to get the best performance from your farm animals in a commercial livestock farming situation, you must aim to produce least cost rations.

That will enable you supply an optimal mix of balanced nutrients to your livestock at the least possible cost – ensuring you can maximize your production output, without spending excessively on feeding.

Understanding this not-so-subtle difference explained above, can determine whether or not your livestock farm business fails or succeeds.

THE MARKETING SECRET YOU NEED TO KNOW

Marketing is like throwing mud at a barn wall. After a while, some of it begins to stick.

I got the above phrase from reading an excellent bestselling book titled “Startup Entrepreneur”, written by James R. Cook.

It was a bible of sorts for me in my first few startup years. I told anyone I met about how great the book was.

One day, someone visited me, and some hours after he’d left, I could no longer find it…LOL!

But I must have read it 10 times or so. As a result, even though I no longer had the print copy, I could literally recite passages from it by heart.

On the morning of Thursday 30th August 2012, I got a call from a lady official of the Ministry of Agriculture, who told me she had read some of my Farm Business Ideas articles on the web.

We met later that same day, to discuss work they are trying to do, to support farm business owners out here.

It was a very useful session, and she gave me great details about a World Bank assisted project they’re implementing to support farm owners with grants and capacity building resources.

I’m preparing a special report that will be made freely available online on this great opportunity for farmers.

My main reason for mentioning the above however, is really to point out

how VERY powerful intelligent web marketing can be, for getting yourself noticed, if diligently applied.

Too many business owners out here fail to understand that marketing requires diligent commitment and patience – and that smart use of the Internet can equip you to keep at it, cost-effectively, to get the results you want, in multiple folds :-))

Make sure you choose a vocation that you have a passion for. It is the key to your success in life.

Ideas for Exploring Low Cost Feed Ingredients, When You Have No Laboratory On Your Farm

This article is a follow up to my earlier report titled “Reducing Catfish Feeding Costs (A Secret Weapon). At the end of that piece, I indicated my intention to address objections I anticipated would arise about the workability of the ideas advocated in it.

This Article Is Based On Real Life Case Studies

Nothing is better than real life proof to back the workability of new ideas proposed for adoption. Indeed, in our society, social pressures make people unwilling to invest effort in “testing” research findings. They want ready-to-use ideas. My understanding of this mental attitude in many farm business owners out here, informed my decision to provide this case-study based follow up.

In this article, I narrate 2 real-life Nigerian “Success Stories” – that demonstrate how resourcefulness, creative thinking, a little persistence, and a willingness to adapt, can help anyone overcome unfavorable or unexpected circumstances.

I also go further, to offer suggestions based on the success stories that you can use, to achieve your goal of adopting low cost alternative ingredients for making the rations you feed your catfish, in order to record substantial savings.

Don’t Try To Kill A Fly With A Hammer

Sometimes it pays to keep things simple. Most of the farm businesses in our society fall in the category of small or medium (even micro). Yet, they produce most of the farm produce consumed in this country. It goes without saying that they will not have the resources to run their own analytical laboratories.

But that does not mean they cannot successfully carry out trials using the identified alternative feed ingredients. We must learn to think out of the box.

And who says you have to build your own labs? What stops you from forming an alliance with a company that has interests to sponsor your efforts, for instance?

What’s more, a lot can be done before the need to test and analyze becomes necessary.

We must learn to operate the way developed societies do. Our farmers need to explore opportunities to collaborate with companies and institutions with a vested interest in utilization of their output. Need specific ideas? Call me.

Two Case Studies You Can Relate To

I have seen Nigerian based operations successfully do what I propose you do. In both cases you are about to read, I had the unique privilege of being an insider, working as an a actively involved employee.

I am hoping you can take away enough to help you implement an action plan for your farm business, to successfully adopt one or more lower cost alternative feed ingredients.

a. Wines Made From 100% Pawpaw Pulp in Matori, Lagos.

Early in 1994, I worked for 6 months as a trainee Sales Coordinator in a medium-sized wine manufacturing company in Matori area of Lagos. Pawpaw fruits were processed – via simple brewing, fermentation, and aging – into a popular range of fruit-based wines distributed (by GB Ollivant) across the country.

All we had in the small factory was a simple laboratory used to check key quality parameters at a basic level like color, sugar level etc. Uninhabited expanses of interstate land heavily populated with wild pawpaw plants, provided a seemingly endless supply of the factory’s major input.

The enterprising owner also wisely got people to collect and supply the fruits to his factory for a fee.

Now, get this: At the gate, we would negotiate a lower price based on over ripe pawpaw fruit in the pickup supply truck. The suppliers had no way of knowing that the over ripe ones were the ones we preferred for our process.

But since they knew no one would buy that from them anyway, they were glad to still earn income for supplying what would be considered “spoiled” fruit elsewhere. As a result, they always left happily, to return with another supply few days later. It’s not surprising that almost 2 decades after, this company is still going strong!

b. Switching From 20% To 80% Sorghum – With Massive Cost Reductions (Lessons from Guinness Nigeria)

As a young brewer in Guinness Nigeria Plc, I had the unique opportunity of participating in the amazing series of events (between 1995 and 1997) that led the company to gradually replace expensive and less available maize, with much cheaper (and more available) sorghum in the brewing process.

This became necessary due to the government’s ban on wheat importation. Apart from brewing plant (and process) modifications, the main thing done was to conduct a series of “trials”. Increased amounts of sorghum were added to the brews, to replace Maize, and the final product tested, with steps being taken to identify needed changes. Eventually they got it right. And the savings were enormous.

What You Can Do

Both case studies prove it can be done. You could argue that you do not have the resources Guinness did. I would counter that the owner of the wine company started as a very small one-man operation in his office, based on this approach.

And that’s one way to go about this. Look for ingredients that are not likely to be in demand for use by too many other interests, and work them into the preparation of your catfish feed. The research findings discussed in my first paper offer a useful starting point.

What is crucial is your mental attitude – you have to be willing to give it a try, with an open mind. The alternative is to complain and wait – probably futilely – for the government or some other group to come up with a solution. That’s not happened in decades. You can take your destiny into your own hands.

Here Are A Few Suggestions:

1. Explore Strategic Partnerships: Approach private sector companies that own labs for possible use of their facilities. Explore ways to offer win-win relationship e.g. assure them of preferential supply at special rate. You’ll be amazed what people assured of useful benefits will agree to. I say this from personal experience.

2. Collaborate With Others: Consider exploring the use of the alternative ingredients as a group. You can do this alone, or work at it with a group of fellow farmers. Get together with like minded farm business owners and discuss ways to conduct real-life pilot scale trials on your farms.

As a farm business owner you are an authority at what you do. It is YOU who should be telling the rest of the world – including the researchers from the academia – what works for your animals and your farm.

Your willingness to conduct pilot trials will equip you to better advise them about what you need from them to make their research findings work better for you.

 

3. Approach Farm Service Centers: Going by what I see the Lagos state government doing out here, this could be a wise thing to do.

Getting support from the Farm Service Centre located along Oko-Oba road, towards pursuing this strategy could make it easier to make 1 and 2 (above) happen. The government operated centre could facilitate the process.

Considering that there are already efforts being made by government to develop alternatives to traditional ingredients, this may not be a far fetched idea.

4. Liaise With Research Publishers: You can also reach out to the researchers who published the findings mentioned in my first paper which led to this.

In many of the papers (which I linked to in the PDF version of my paper), the corresponding author’s contact email is usually supplied right at the top. These people did the research because they want to help farmers succeed better.

I believe they’ll be excited to work with you, in implementing the findings on your farm. It would be a win-win for you, and them. And the country – or indeed the continent – as a whole would benefit!

The Customer Will NOT Always Be Right: Don’t Be A Victim Of Entrepreneur Abuse™!

I do not know what your experiences so far in business have been, but mine and those of a surprising number of others I have read – this year alone – tell me that the market in which we look for clients and prospects is awash with all kinds of characters. I have as a result adopted a philosophy that contradicts what the popular saying “The customer is always right” suggests. My purpose for writing this article is to: a). Help entrepreneurs who read my writing learn how to protect themselves from exploitation while trying to meet clients’ needs (b). Help those who patronise entrepreneurs learn how NOT to behave if they are to avoid being guilty of Entrepreneur Abuse™.
