Make MORE Money: Convert Your Custom Spreadsheets to Mobile Phone Apps [Hint: My New Spreadsheet to Mobile Phone App Conversion Service – See “Agricultural Field Inspection App” in test mode]

This is my first broadcast to members of my Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation Club in 2017 – and it is a special Audio Podcast.

In it, I reveal the many insights I’ve gained from over 6 months of careful research into the potential opportunities to be harvested from venturing into development of mobile phone apps using custom spreadsheets.

My message: Regardless of your field of interest or specialization, you can LEARN to create mobile phone apps you can sell, based on custom spreadsheets you use in your work!

My interest in doing this was first aroused after a series of clients asked me if my Excel-VB Ration Formulator and the Poultry Farm Manager software had versions that could run on mobile platforms.

At that time I waved off such inquiries as being from overzealous users. But later on, after I encountered a feed formulation app built to work on Android devices, I realized that not only would it be wise to explore building my own app to work on mobile devices, but that I could create a whole new range of products, based on spreadsheet customization – and even help other professionals using proprietary spreadsheet models they’ve built.

At the end of the audio, I announce my new Spreadsheet to Mobile Phone App Conversion Service.

Below: Screenshot of an Example “Agricultural Field Inspection App” – in test mode

xl-mobile-app-agric-insp2

It’s a mobile app for agriculture field inspections.

How It Works:

The app comes with 2 links that allow you to to install it on (a)  your mobile device and/or (b) run it in your web browser.

1. Users will use it to collect images, notes, and GPS locations while working/inspecting locations in the field.

2. The app automatically records date, time, and GPS location when a new record is posted.

3. It also allows the user capture up to two images and type in accompanying notes for each record.

4. This nifty app will come in especially useful for field workers/researches when they need to document specific issues while in the field.

NB: Variants of this app will be created for other applications. For instance, Primary Health Care Database Facilities Inspection etc.

Being Germ Free Can Make You UNHEALTHY [Hint: Why Intelligent Mistake Making Is the Key to Authentic Success Achievement]

In this piece, I discuss one very harmful mindset that can hold anyone back, from achieving authentic success.

By this I refer to the habit of avoiding mistakes.

Some people believe in avoiding mistakes at all costs. What they fail to realize is that a time tested way to learning quickly and effectively is by making mistakes – but doing so INTELLIGENTLY.

I call it IMM – Intelligent Mistake Making.

Some of the wisest people you can find are people who take risks to try new things.

People who have experienced the ups and downs of life. People who have made mistakes, learned their lessons/paid the price and moved on to success.

Sometimes they fail, have to get up and try again, and again, until they succeed. Indeed their are times they end up NOT succeeding. But the benefit is rarely ONLY in the final outcome. Quite often it is in the experience – what is learned in the process of trying and failing.

The minute a human being achieves a fault – or error – free status, I believe s/he needs to relocate to heaven.

There would be NOTHING else to remain on earth for. And that’s why I have little patience with persons who make too much of a big deal of mistakes. No one is ever going to be perfect – or free from defect. It is in fact our imperfect nature, which should give us a sense of purpose, if we wish to make our stay on earth worthwhile.

Nature itself offers lessons that buttress the above point. She demonstrates through our exposure to diseases, that we NEED to get a little dirty every now and then, in order to become stronger or “better”.

Let me explain: Those of use who live in Africa know that our children are born with marked natural immunity to Malaria, especially when compared to children born in places where that disease is not endemic.

Our children get their immunity from parents and also from exposure to malaria via mosquito bites. This same principle applies to the use of vaccines (which are produced using the disease causing organism which the vaccines is meant to act against).

In essence I’m saying that it is NOT beneficial to completely INSULATE ourselves from exposure to germs. Research evidence and real-life experiences confirm that 100% germ free environments may deny us the opportunity to develop some degree of natural resistance (via production of anitbodies in response to exposure) to common disease causing organisms, that we may encounter.

The implication of the above point was captured quite eloquently in a line I picked up from a martial arts movie I recently watched.

The star actor said:

“Water that is too pure, has no fish in it”.

I would put it this way:

“People who do not make mistakes, NEVER really achieve progress.”

And that’s the truth. But some people go through life claiming to be better than others, because no one sees them fail at anything.

Sometimes it’s NOT healthy to be too “clean”.

I argue that ANYONE who is not experiencing periodic failure (temporary defeat), is either NOT taking any risks, or is hiding those failures from others. Whatever the case, s/he stands to lose a lot from living that way.

As you start this new year, I ask you to face up to the challenge of getting yourself a little “dirty” (from failing/falling) as the opportunities present themselves (AND THEY WILL!). Your progress towards achieving self-actualisation will depend greatly on doing this.

On a final note, let me wish you joy, happiness, good health, and success in pursuit of your valued goals in 2017 and beyond.

A People’s Ability to Disagree Without Being Disagreeable is Crucial for Societal Advancement [Hint: Why Too Many of Today’s Nigerians Are Often Too Angry to be Reasoned With!]

It’s something that first began to really strike me when I visited Nigeria for the first time about 6 months after relocating to Cotonou.

I mean the fact that there are a LOT of (indeed too many!) VERY angry people within the geographical entity called Nigeria.

One time I was in the chauffeured 4 wheel drive of a Cotonou based Nigerian diplomat as we drove through the border town of Badagry, on our way to his farm house in Ekiti.

I could not help pointing out to the driver how readily one could see people shouting insults and curses at one another on either side of the road. Some were even fighting – right next to the highway, with most others simply walking past.

Motorists themselves acted no different as we continued. The tiniest misdeed on your part as you drove readily earned you a torrent of insults – or if you were lucky an impatient look of contempt!

This was in stark contrast to what I’d seen and experienced during the tough first 6 months I’d stayed in Benin Republic. Indeed, the only time I ever saw ANY form of aggression displayed by locals in Cotonou was when 2 robbers were given the beating of their lives, and left bleeding for the police to pickup, after they tried to rob a woman emerging from a bank around Etoile Rouge.

Look, as I’ve said in past articles, I once spent 3 months – in 2013 – living among undergraduates half my age, in a room on the National University campus Calavi, when I failed to find accommodation in Cotonou.

It was a last resort arranged by a friend I made which saved me from getting further duped of 2,000 FCFA multiples, by the greedy estate agents I naively trusted to take me around to see flats I could rent.

But my housing problem apart, I NEVER once saw a single fight occur on that campus all through my 90 day stay there. Not once – and believe me, I moved around a lot.

If anything, I discovered from being among those young Beninese male and female students, that theirs was an environment in which PEACE MAKING valued in the larger society, was not only actively promoted, but also strictly enforced.

Indeed, if you were heard or seen shouting at one another, without so much as physically touching one another, chances were good that those involved would get summoned and possibly disciplined.

I saw that happen at least once, before I left that campus.

One day in Cotonou, after I’d left Calavi and found my own apartment, I recall seeing a commercial bike rider accidentally splash water in a pothole on a man standing along the road.

The latter angrily called out to him, and the bike man stopped and retorted in like manner. Before they could do anything more, a 3rd person who was just passing by, stepped between both of them and said, in French “Ici au Benin, c’est toujours la paix!” (Translation: “Here in Benin, it is always peace!”).

Magically, that simple statement instantly deflated the anger in both men, and I marveled as all 3 men smiled, shook hands and parted ways!

That was the day I realized that citizens of a nation have the power to determine whether or not they get along – regardless of the antics their leaders may try to use to cause conflict among them.

Sadly, this is one more truth I see too many people in my country, Nigeria, simply do not understand: As a result, they routinely let their emotions get out of control in relating with one another, especially when holding opposing views, to the extent that understanding and peace become strangers in their societies.

I argue that we must “learn to disagree without being disagreeable“.

It’s hard to remember where I first read or heard the above phrase used, but it has stuck in my mind since.

Life would be a joke, or an exercise in deception if human beings did not periodically disagree with one another.

There is a quote I once read that:

“Where everyone thinks alike, no one is doing any thinking!”

For some strange reason, people raised in the Nigerian society arrive adulthood with a notion (and a VERY faulty notion it is!) that one must accept the reasoning or thinking adopted by the majority.

Some will even parrot the popular saying (used most times out of context) that “majority carries the vote” – to justify going along with what others say, and demanding that you do the same.

Anatole France, the shipping magnate however wisely noted as follows:

“If a million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.”

Sadly, Nigerian society is a place where those willing to express divergent views on an issue often find themselves in the minority…

This is because most others would rather quietly align with the majority to avoid criticism, or worse, from others who have been taught o be viciously intolerant of opposing views.

It does not matter what the subject is – be it religious or intellectual. It does not matter how logical the arguments made need to be: If it so happens that some people are more “friendly” with one another, chances are good that they will simply gang up against those with opposing views – even if their own argument makes no sense!

After observing this happen for some time, and having it done to me several times, I conceived the following quote in an article published back in 2006, to describe those who allow themselves to be brow beaten and stifled by irrationally argumentative others who predominate in society.

“Some people join the crowd in order to become “hidden” or “protected” from criticism or scrutiny. Since they also take care never to voice contrary (and at times ANY) opinion, they are rewarded with the anonymity they seek – and the insignificance that results from it.” – Tayo Solagbade

I’ve done additional research on this subject and found that such irrationally argumentative people also exist in other societies around the word – including the wonderful US of America!

The difference I’ve noticed however, especially in the developed societies, is that those who hold divergent views from the irrationally argumentative group, generally REFUSE to give up their rights to FREELY EXPRESS their difference of opinion in public or private.

Not just that, the various sociopolitical structures extant in those countries make it literally impossible for ANYONE to stifle or intimidate others, even if they are a minority, from VOICING their opinions as and when they please, where and when they want.

It’s every human being’s fundamental right to speak FREELY what s/he believes about an issue. You do NOT have to accept it, but you must RESPECT his/her right to do so.

That is how a civilized society functions. We must never let our emotions blind us to the proper ways of doing things – or stop us from acting with consideration for the feelings of others around us!

It is my considered opinion that given what I see in today’s Nigeria, if Socrates had been born in our time, in our country, Nigerians would probably have lynched him to death before he could make a name for himself!

Yep. He would have probably been shouted down – or worse killed – for his adopted questioning technique, which forced those he debated with to furnish credible logic based arguments to defend their adopted positions on issues.

People intolerant of others unwilling to agree with them would find a person like Socrates simply intolerable!

Yet, if Nigeria is to evolve and mature into a progressive society, the QUALITY of debates we are able to have among ourselves, without rancour, really needs to improve.

I’ve witnessed lively debates on various issues under the sun by Beninese adults holding opposing views over the last 3 years, and NOT once have I ever seen it end in broken friendships, or harsh language. It seems to be something they’ve learnt to do from their youth – as my stay on their campus indicated!

Now here’s one quote I especially LOVE, because I think many people fail to realize how doable it is:

“I don’t have to agree with you to like you or respect you.” – Anthony Bourdain

You see, it is my considered opinion that unless a person you like, love or respect has done something UNWORTHY or UNBECOMING or simply BAD, you really have NO NEED whatsoever to CHANGE how you feel about him or her.

So, if s/he chooses to support a different candidate during the elections for instance, you will understand that s/he holds a different view of what that person is capable of achieving in office, compared to the candidate you prefer.

That should not stop both of you from remaining friendly with one another during or indeed after the elections are over.

I recall we used to say back in my undergraduate days that:

“We can agree to disagree”

Only people who take things too personally, fail to understand the need for this matured way of living. They believe they must either win you over to their line of thinking or stop liking you or speaking with you. Haba!

The quotes below provide a fitting end to this piece, and also throw a challenge to ALL of us, regarding our adopted attitudes towards debatable issues.

“I will never compromise Truth for the sake of getting along with people who can only get along when we agree.” – D.R. Silva

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” – S.G. Tallentyre, The Friends of Voltaire

“Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.” – (Essay to Leo Baeck, 1953) Albert Einstein

“It’s okay to disagree with the thoughts or opinions expressed by other people. That doesn’t give you the right to deny any sense they might make. Nor does it give you a right to accuse someone of poorly expressing their beliefs just because you don’t like what they are saying. Learn to recognize good writing when you read it, even if it means overcoming your pride and opening your mind beyond what is comfortable.” – Ashly Lorenzana

Final Words: The ability to act in line with the above admonition will often be a function of the DEGREE of Emotional Intelligence(EI) an individual possesses.

It’s a shame that in this part of the world many still do not realize that EI is more important than IQ for achieving success in life.

Actually most do not even know what EI is or means!

And the few who do fail to understand that unlike IQ, it can be improved by any person willing to make the effort. Indeed, many progressive societies are modifying their schooling systems to incorporate activities that help learners (especially kids) develop their EI.

Click here to read my widely syndicated article on EI – based on what I learned by reading Daniel Goleman’s similarly titled book back in in 2006.

Here’s one final quote to drive home my point…

Truth does not become more true by virtue of the fact that the entire world agrees with it, nor less so even if the whole world disagrees with it. – Maimonides, The Guide for the Perplexed

So, dear reader, I say this to you:

Engage in intellectually stimulating debates with others, without letting your emotions get out of control. And while doing so, be sure to remain objective in looking at the issues from all perspectives, while keeping an open mind to acknowledge possibilities you may not have considered previously.

Most importantly however, AIM to always end your debates on a positive note with him/her or them.

Make it your resolve to never take anything that is said personally. The world NEEDS diversity to evolve – but the truth, about all issues, even if initially hidden will eventually be revealed to all!!!

In the coming weeks, I’ll build on this foundation given them with MORE online tutorials and tips, until next month’s edition.

By way of interest, before the workshop went into full swing, I received 2 phone calls from potential buyers in the presence of my attendees….

One was from a Startup Farm CEO in Enugu who had contacted hours before, in the morning, via my website auto response message about my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager.

xlvb-ife1

The other was an individual who called – for this first time – using a UK mobile phone number.

24 hours later (i.e. on Sunday p.m.), the former had made a deposit into my account to take up an offer I’d made to him. I delivered his personalized version of the products to him this morning before leaving to resolve some issues with my bank.

xlvb-ife2

I mention the above incident, because that development served to further convince my learners that acquiring Excel-VB development skills like I had, would translate to significant income earning benefits for them!

This journey of building a club based follower ship began in May 2015. But to get this far, I’ve had to work hard on myself for YEARS!

I’m a self-taught developer of Custom Excel-VB driven Spreadsheet Software – and I’ve been developing custom spreadsheet solutions for business users in a very wide range of industries using my self-taught skills for 2 decades (starting with Lotus 1-2-3 before switching to Excel-VB in paid employment).

Initially, I did it while in paid employment, in my spare time – but it transformed my career and opened many doors of rapid career advancement opportunities that would NEVER have materialized otherwise.

Since I quit paid employment to do it for a living, in 2001, my work has evolved to a whole new level – with my products getting purchased by clients within and outside Africa.

All this has happened with only my self-taught skills. However, my self-development efforts in this regard have NOT been haphazard.

In order to improve myself, I studied – and continue to study – the works of experts recognized as established thought leaders and practitioners in Excel-VB Solutions development in the real world.

Examples of those whose works have influenced me are Pierre LeClerc, the fatherly gentleman based in Canada, whose approach to Excel-VB programming makes it so easy to rapidly improves one’s self via self-study, using resources he provides.

My encounter with his work, in 2005 changed the way I worked with Excel. He it was who really made me understand how to OPTIMIZE the Excel calculation engine, using it’s powerful spreadsheet functions and features, while enhancing my productivity by incorporating Excel-VB automation – where relevant.

You see, Pierre explains that a competent Excel-VB Solutions Developer will have a real world relevant problem solving mind set  – as different from the world view adopted quite often by people called “Programmers”.

Indeed, most times an Excel-VB developer will have a background in management, which will guide his/her intelligent use of MS Excel and its VBA back end for real world relevant problem solving.

This philosophy has helped me escape the trap that many others fall into, of wanting to CODE the life out  of every problem in an unconscious effort to show how skilled one is in programming.

The authors of Professional Excel Programming – which I call the Excel Bible – agree with this line of thinking. Indeed, in the first part of their book, the actually described 5 categories of Excel Developers – and they named those with the above tendency: “VBA Developer”

At the bottom of this piece is a diagrammatic representation, with notes, of those 5 categories – which reflects LEVELS of Excel-VB proficiency of a user.

I have chosen to base the coaching support I offer my target market on use of this model.

For the market I serve, I’ve found out that most users will most likely fall into Levels 1 and 2. My vision is to help those interested to move up to Level 4 – through the one-on-one experiential coaching I offer as well as the generic coaching I provide via my Excel-VB club.

But one problem I anticipate is that of the VBA developer types of business users and/or those with such a mind set

Excel-VB Solutions Development is NOT about ego tripping. We are not people obsessed with displaying our programming or coding prowess. Instead, we make intelligent use of our coding skills to ENHANCE our work productivity as it relates to our data recording, analysis and report generation for timely decision making.

That’s why I have examples of automated workbook reports (like this one build for the National Distribution Manager of a Large Multinational Telecom Company) that do NOT use a single line of VBA code, and yet cuts down report generation time by over 80% – compared to status quo!

Those who want to learn from me or engage my services must be willing to adopt this perspective, otherwise it would be impractical for us to work together.

A recent enquirer sent me some code he was having problems getting to run normally and asked that I help out. I was due to run my first workshop for my Excel-VB club members at the time, so I told him I’d create a video tutorial based on it later.

As I type this, it’s 3.24 a.m. Monday 22nd March 2016 and I just took my first real look at the code after pasting it into the code window of a new workbook.

What I saw INSTANTLY screamed “VBA Developer” to me.

Why?

Because some of the code sentences showed he was using code in VBA to do things that would have been better handled using Excel’s spreadsheet functions.

Whoever wrote that macro procedure/subroutine did a lot of coding overkill.

It pays to LET EXCEL BE EXCEL, if you want to get a solution that gives the user best results.

With what I’ve seen, I’ve decided I’m going to ask the gentleman to show me the data he wishes to handle, so I can gain better insights into what he wants to do with the code.

Then based on that perspective, I’ll point out the inadequacy of the coding approach adopted and propose an alternative more consistent with best practice.

In order to sell custom Excel-VB software as a profitable business in a socioeconomic environment where it did NOT previously exist (Nigeria), I’ve had to adapt ideas from developers in Europe and America to suit my needs.

The priority I’ve had to pay attention to has been the mental attitude of business users out here who balked repeatedly at any efforts to deliver solutions with a DIY provision.

In other words, they did not want to learn how to do what I’d done for them or how to maintain or improve on it.

Instead, what they wanted was for me to deliver what amounted to a “dummy-proof” range of solutions – that did not even require them to know ANYTHING about using MS Excel!

This is why today, in my promotional messages, for my Excel Heaven brand, I say “If you can use a mobile phone, you can use my custom Excel-VB apps”.

The above experiences have made me realize that users in these parts especially, or those with similar backgrounds to them will best be helped to develop interest in learning Excel-VB automation by using what is called a Case-Study based Experiential Coaching Approach.

Basically, this means that I offer to teach them Excel-VB programming by focusing on using the work they consider important as a basis on which to provide my tutorials, in such a way that at the end of each session they will leave with something they can immediately begin to apply to improve their work related productivity.

This strategy of Experiential Coaching necessarily makes it difficult, if not impossible to provide a one-size-fits-all range of tutorials for learners.

Instead, I have step-by-step video and PDF tutorials meant to introduce every learner to foundational concepts of Excel-VB programming.

These will give him/her the needed sound footing to build up his/her skills in BEST PRACTICE Excel-VB coding.

But to ensure s/he is able to make good progress without losing enthusiasm, I will use information I obtain using my Needs Analysis Questionnaire to identify – in liaison with him/her – key work based tasks that we can use as Case Studies for his/her learning.

Based on what I learn from his/her questionnaire responses, and our interactions as the coaching progresses, I can go on to create a special range of tutorials for him/her to use for home study.

This is my approach, based on the needs of my target market/audience, identified over the past decade.

Click here to learn more about my Home/Self-Study Tutorials used in my One-on-One Experiential Coaching

It is basically a custom solution in which I create learning “content” for YOU based on needs I identify you have. Access to this option requires joining my Inner Circle.

This is different from the arrangement in which I offer general coaching via short weekly tips and tutorials to members of my Excel-VB club (click here to see my members-only private/closed Facebook page for club members).

The required investment for the former (which is $500 USD via my Inner Circle) is different from that for the latter (which is $65 USD per annum – for membership of my Excel-VB club – click here for details).

It goes without saying that the one-on-one coaching option is more intensive than the Excel-VB club alternative. You will need to decide which one you will be best able to cope with – because I WILL CHALLENGE you to stick with agreed milestone targets/dates!

Click here to see the course content for my 4 day Excel-VB Programming Coaching LIVE Workshop

By way of interest, I offer to produce a home study video tutorial version of what I would normally teach during the above mentioned LIVE event – for interested persons – be you a one-on-one learner or member of my Excel-VB club.

But again, since not everyone will have similar needs, the specific examples I will use will vary depending on the individual’s identified needs.

Below: A mind-map showing 5 levels of Excel-VB Solutions Development Competence I offer support to achieve

ExcelVB-Levels - A mind-map showing 5 levels of Excel-VB Solutions Development Competence I offer support to achieve. I came up with this diagram based on categorizations made in Professional Excel Development – the massive Excel-VB programming bible written by 3 of the world’s foremost developers i.e. Stephen Bullen, Rob Bovey and John Green.

Each has delivered high profile commercial Excel-VB software solutions to the world’s largest corporations.

Note that my experiences over the years indicate that majority of business users want something around the Power User level – especially career persons in paid employment in this part of the world – as against what obtains in developed societies.

Having said that, my goal is to use my Excel-VB club platform to gradually encourage more users in and out of paid employment, to over time build their competence to the level of Excel Developer – and possibly beyond i.e. to Professional Excel Developer.

True Story: Responding to last week’s request for Excel-VB coding help from a business user in India

Last week, I published a blog in which I shared details of the above mentioned request I got from an Indian gentleman at about 12:53 p.m. on Tuesday 15th March 2016 (Read it here).

Early this morning, at about 4.30a.m or so, I got up and checked out his code, then wrote in modifications my first instincts led me to use – and they worked.

Then, just as I’d promised the gentleman, I proceeded to record a screen shot demonstration tutorial in which I explained what I’d done, and why. In the video, I gave him my opinion about the intended purpose of the code snippet he’d sent to me, noting the fact that better use of the Excel object model could minimize the need for VBA use for the task in question.

Below are screen shots of the original code he sent, and the modified one I sent back, PLUS email/facebook exchanges we’ve since this morning…

This is the original code snippet he sent me at about 12:53 p.m on Tuesday 15th March 2016 - click to read last week's article about our first conversation

This is the modified code I sent back to him this morning - Monday 21st March 2016 before 5a.m

Above is the lower part of the message I sent him, with my modified code workbook attached. Below is the message I sent shortly after, telling him I’d emailed the explanatory video I promsied to his GMAIL addreess

This is the email I sent him with the modified code workbook and explanatory video attached this p.m

This is the response he sent to me after seeing my modified code module, and test running it successfully - today Monday 21st March 2016 at about 3p.m

Above: Email in which he replied (after seeing my code) expressing satisfaction with what I’d sent him.

Notice in his last email response, above, that he said he looked forward to requesting more of my “help” in the same manner…

And interestingly, he stated that he was sure I would give it…being the “nice sir” that I am of course…hee hee!

Unfortunately, I do NOT do flattery. I do NOT need it.

I also do NOT feel ANY need to prove myself in terms of my Excel-VB coding (or any other) competence.

So, one thing I KNOW will NOT be happening again is ME doing any such thing for him again.

Either he joins one of the countless free forums, or he enrolls for a course online. Or he could join my Excel-VB club.

But even when if he joins my club, I will NOT be doing coding for him. I do NOT code for any of my members. Instead I teach them concepts, tips, techniques they need to know and then guide them to THINK up ways to use what they learn to solve ANY problem they raise for use as a case study.

That’s why I call my approach Experiential Coaching.

Some people believe that if you really know something, the best way to prove it is to TELL the learner. They argue that “using questions” and prompts, like I do suggests I’m not confident or competent or both – and that THAT is why I hide behind that approach.

My response is that I have a library of commercial Excel-VB apps that I’ve been selling to an increasingly global paying audience for over 10 years now. Not only did I build them – and find buyers – ALL by myself, I also provide LIFETIME after sales support 24/7 to ALL my buyers.

And that is ALL the proof I need!

If you’re a business user of Excel in Nigeria/Africa and you represent a group, organization or association of business users, and would like to gain access to the learning solutions I offer with regard to the above, click here to contact me.

You Cannot Sell Web Marketing as a Commodity (Hint: Suggestions to SEO Service “Sales Persons” and Those Who Buy From Them)

[Update – 5th March 2016 at 19:28: Click here to listen a short audio recording I did on this subject BEFORE I wrote this article]

The views I express in this piece may rub some hard core SEO practitioners the wrong way. However, I urge you to keep an open mind as you read, so as to appreciate the often missed perspective I offer.

A few days ago, I got a call from a young lady who boldly announced the name of the company she worked for, and then asked:

“Are you Tayo Solagbade, the owner of thefarmceo.net?”

When I replied in the affirmative, she said “We can get thefarmceo.net to appear in the number one spot on Google. What do you think about that?”

At this point, I understood where she was headed with her line of questioning, and sighed as I realized the nuisance I’d endured for years via email, from so called SEO providers had come to me via yet another channel.

I proceeded to calmly and politely explain to her that thefarmceo.net was one of 5 domains I owned, and that I had no need to get it to appear in number one spot on Google.

I explained further that I did not do SEO in the conventional sense she proposed, where one aimed to appear on number one, for a fee. Instead I use(d) a zero cost Web Marketing System to achieve the search engine visibility I needed (via multiple sales pages indexed) , in a manner that brought me a regular stream of high quality prospects via search engine queries.

She asked some more questions, in a way that indicated she was trying to wrap her mind around the unusual point I was making. How come I did not do SEO?

I replied that I did some basic SEO, but that I focused more of my efforts on using my Web Marketing System to get noticed in a favourable way by the engines and my target audience. For instance, I told her thefarmceo.net, for me, does not need to appear in Google’s SERP at number one, because I use it mainly as a forwarder to a sub domain on my flagship website i.e. www.iff.tayosolagbade.com. I therefore place greater priority in getting TayoSolagbade.com top visibility in search engines results pages.

At that point I heard a click, and the line went dead. She was gone.

Whether she’d cut the call, or had run out of airtime, I had no idea. One thing was certain though: she would not be calling back, because all I’d said clearly indicated I would NOT be interested in buying the “commodity” of number one position in Google for a fee, that she wanted to sell.

It is my considered opinion, that outside standard SEO that most website owners know/do, the smartest, most effective way to attract attention from potential buyers online, is intelligent creation and propagation of useful, value adding and interesting content, on a regular basis.

I believe many supposed SEO service providers focus on selling commodities instead of solutions. That often serves them, with little or no benefit to clients.

For those who still don’t get it, here’s why an offer of that kind should NOT win you over easily:

1. Getting into number one can be achieved, depending on a variety of factors.

But that has to be done within a defined context relevant to your unique needs. Since they come telling you they can do it without even knowing what you’re about, how can you be sure they’ll make it happen in a way that will attract the right kind of people, you need to buy from you?

Getting into number one MUST be a means to an end YOU want to achieve.

If you get into number one for irrelevant search strings, you’ll make little or no sales. And if you get into number one for the wrong reasons, or you get into number one in the wrong “niche”…then you’re on a wild goose chase!

Those are the fine details these “vendors” never tell most uninformed clients (Sometimes I suspect even they (the SEO “vendors” – as I like to think of this breed – do NOT know those details themselves!)

They simply play the trick of massaging people’s egos.

Showing up on Google’s number 1 placing becomes a bragging right they encourage the client to aim for. The client is made to forget that THAT appearance is supposed to translate to quality sales leads can result in actual buying transactions taking place.

2. Staying at number one in the manner they propose will require that YOU pay THEM money to keep it so

It becomes a recurrent expenditure, once they lock you in. I say your money will be better spent most times!

There are website owners caught in this trap now, paying to stay in their so called number one placing, even though their leads generations is showing no significant improvement.

3. Web marketing when done right, can deliver timeless returns on your investment.

A person who comes offering to get you into number one, without asking for information to evaluate what your brand is about, does NOT care about you.

S/he is hunting for money.

Choosing the right expert, and paying him/her to handle your SEO can yield good results. However, it can be hard to find experts with integrity, and competence, who will not be a bit pricey.

So, when you get offers of quick-fix SEO solutions, at “low prices” consider such offers with a big spoon of salt.

4. One more thing. I don’t know if I’m the only one who has noticed this…

When I was trying to reinvent my website marketing i.e. when traffic was close to nil, and I was starting this blog in 2012, I got few offers from these SEO guys.

But as soon as things began moving up for me traffic wise, especially from Google and You tube, in late 2013. When I’d built up some critical mass of blog posts, I suddenly started getting a rash of almost daily email offers to help me get more traffic and page 1 SERP placings!

That’s like offering me medication for an ailment I already cured myself of!

Apart from a few articles (like the one here and this one here) I’ve ignored them for the most part – until this phone call incident from a few days ago. The former link leads to an article titled “Open Letter To Intending SEO Service Providers – From Tayo Solagbade of the SD Nuggets Blog” in which I PREDICTED that I would succeed with my web marketing WITHOUT using their services, or adopting their methods.

I’ve since been vindicated many times over – including the time my domain got poached and I rebuilt my brand to even greater search engine relevance on a brand new domain less than 6 months! (Read A Proven Strategy to Find Profitable Buyers Regardless of Your Domain Name)

Here’s one of several analogies I use to drive home my point about the power of original and useful content in web marketing

Imagine putting up a (never-before-seen) page with a link to watch a video showing Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi trading tackles in a secret one-on-one match up, to see who could score more goals against the other, on a web page with ZERO SEO done to it!!!

I’m sure you’ll agree with me that THAT video will chalk up a massive number of views from soccer enthusiasts in no time – regardless of what platform the page owner chooses to announce it from.

Why?

Because the target audience, who are die hard soccer lovers, would watch and then tell one another, and possibly keep coming back to watch.

In the process, Google and other search engine robots would follow the “traffic” of visitors to that page and the video, and it would climb right into page 1 of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). And it would begin trending, then more people would get to know about it, and the cycle would continue.

We all know this is what happens. And that’s why I believe sometimes we go overboard in the way we talk about SEO.

Having said that, some highly competitive markets do require extra and more sophisticated SEO efforts to gain the slightest advantage.

However, those tend to be in the minority. Especially in my part of the world. The degree of needs sophistication regarding web marketing is much lower in Africa, compared to what obtains in developed societies.

A large majority of website owners out here are not so technical minded.

My experiences and observations also indicate that few are willing, talk less able, to pay competent hands to to do it for them. And that’s if any worthwhile returns – measurable and sustainable – can be had.

Unless it’s not too pricey and a one-off expense (both not likely) most of them would balk at doing it.

For me, as far as today’s web marketing goes, my experiences tell me once you know the demographics of those you want to attract, the rest is easy.

You would begin by doing
the standard SEO stuff e.g. add keywords, title and description tags to articles, images plus submit your domain to directories and search engines.

You would also follow key Google webmaster tools recommendations. Setup profiles on Google plus, You tube, and other social media platforms you consider relevant – being sure to use RSS feeds and URLs to link the aforementioned with your website and blog.

Such standard steps generally suffice.

Next you would focus on churning out useful and interesting information via
as many channels and in as many formats as possible, to meet your target audience’s needs

As you do that – and continue to do so – simply watch Google’s fair play algorithms do their magic in your favour. Your webmaster tools account would offer more insights into analyzing your performance, and you could use that to improve your efforts.

Apart from attracting a larger number of potential buyers to you, this approach also ensures they are more profitable as well!

Unfortunately, Africans in general, and Nigerians in particular still need to learn to NOT be so
egotistical and negatively competitive in both business as well as personal life.

Our way of life too often encourages people to think and act from Win-Lose (instead
of Win-Win) perspectives in relating with one another.

As a result, trust is a stranger amongst us, as is the true spirit of excellence
that thrives where negative competition is absent or minimal.

The above is why we often find ourselves looking to others from Europe and America
to help us develop, since our best people often find it hard to come – and stay –
together in lasting collaboration to make desired results happen.

In this field of Web Marketing for instance, this problem is one that I have
pointed out many times.

It is why too many web development practitioners in these parts still continue
selling web marketing to clients as a “commodity” with a shelf life, when in fact it
needs to be delivered as a self-sustaining “solution” that is timeless in its
impact.

Since their clients don’t know better, they accept this inefficient and more
expensive approach until they can no longer afford it and/or the results no longer
justify the continued monetary investment.

These developers see a person preaching low to zero cost timeless marketing
strategies like me as a threat.

They believe I want to make them do more work for clients than
they are willing to. So, rather than reach out to learn from me, they begin to look
for ways to discredit me before clients who are often not savvy enough to see
through their antics.

And that’s why:

1. I offer web marketing educational resources for CEOs – to over time arm them with
insights to be more discerning in terms of what they accepts from providers –
including me!

2. Once in a while I also offer messages to other web development service providers
fitting the description given above, about the need to invest quality time to learn
better ways to serve clients improved results.

The pod cast I will publish on this blog tomorrow, offers content catering to both groups, that I believe they
will find to be a wake up call of sorts.

For Web Marketing Success You Need to Tell Compelling Stories [Hint: How Educational Commercials Can Help You]

I create Educational Commercials (EC) for clients in various markets, and continue to do so for myself as well. It’s a resource I have found to be quite versatile in that it can be used both on and off the web to establish expert authority status and generate potential sales leads.

However, not many business owners I meet, who own websites of their own, are aware that this kind of publication can help them.

[TIP: Click here to download one of my most popular Educational Commercials, titled “Proven Techniques (& Strategies) You Can Use to Start & Finish Writing ANYTHING“]

Simply put, an EC helps you present potentially useful information and education in a manner that makes potential clients feel you can help them – even though you are not directly marketing your solutions to them.

You can do this by using a storytelling approach to communicate the ideas and strategies you advocate for adoption. Or you could adopt a white paper based format in which you offer insights and recommendations based of formal investigate research you’ve done into the theme or subject of the EC.

There are countless ways you can use prepare an Educational Commercial. I have however found storytelling to be especially effective, because many times the stories resonate with the readers who fit my target audience profile.

This is why I always advise my clients to tell true stories about experiences they have in their personal and work lives, making sure to find creative ways to weave in subtle references to what they do, in a way that alerts readers to the solutions they offer.

It can take a while to et the hang of it, of course, but when eventually you do, you WILL be amazed by the results you will get – in form of people reaching out to you as if they’ve always known you. Potential clients will call you and eagerly demand for details of solutions you offer, based on what they’ve read in your writing.

Having said the above, I must add that writing the EC is one thing, but getting it found and read by those you NEED to do so, is quite another thing!

This is because regardless of the shape or form your EC takes, you need to develop and implement a smart Web Marketing System to effectively promote it to your target markets.

My experience and success with Web Marketing prove that it pays to intelligently break down one’s story into different reusable parts, so as to appeal to one’s target audience in as many ways as possible.

I’ve studied experts who tell their stories to sell their books and services like Kiyosaki, and noticed that some of his books offer more details about his “story” that other books he’s written do not. I also noticed that he uses the details to determine the marketing slant he adopts for the book.

At my own small level, I have done the same thing with aspects of my own life story e.g. for my parenting articles/books compared to my career development articles/books or my entrepreneurship articles/books – and it’s worked so well for me.

I am convinced, based on my experiences over the years, and the success I enjoy with my Web Marketing today, that anyone who diligently follows the guidelines I specify, will achieve similar, if not better results compared to mine.

Recommendation: Listen to My Web Marketing Pod cast Series

A few days ago, I published the first pod cast in my new series on this (Web Marketing) theme.

Click this link to listen to it at https://soundcloud.com/tayo-solagbade/making-money-with-your-online

What I say in it are examples of what I do for myself, and for my clients.

All of that is however something that YOU can also learn to do by yourself, for yourself – IF you have the time and the needed training.

Those who hire me often do NOT have the time or the training, and/or prefer to engage my experience and expertise to boost their chances of getting sustainable results faster.

Educational Commercials Will Boost Your Marketing

A Smarter and Cheaper Strategy for Earning Foreign Exchange [Hint: It’s NOT Related to Crude Oil or Agricultural Exports…But It’s Cheaper And More Sustainable]

It’s become more apparent that we as a people in Nigeria still refuse to GET IT, when it comes to identify SMARTER strategies for earning TANGIBLE foreign exchange on a sustainable basis to boost our economy.

Since I became a child capable of intelligent thought, growing up in Nigeria, most times the subject of foreign exchange earnings has been discussed, it has always been MAINLY regard to sales of Crude Oil, and Agricultural Exports.

Fast forward many decades later, and I’m approaching my 46th birthday, yet nothing has changed.

Both the leadership and followers in Nigeria still cannot see that there are MANY more reliable alternative ways today, to earn substantial amounts of foreign exchange, on a long term sustainable basis, at much less cost, using much fewer resources, and in much less time!

This is the Information Age we’re in for heaven’s sake. A time in which PC and Internet technology drives virtually every area of our lives – even including the exploration of our crude oil (which now commands pitiful selling prices in the market) as well as our agribusiness endeavors.

I recently got a browser error message displayed in my attempt to make online renewal payment for a client’s website hosting using my Debit card, linked to my Paypal account.

The message shown advised that my card been “denied by the card issuer”: I had no clue what that meant.

By the time I called the bank’s support arm, they checked and announced that the funds paid in by my client were insufficient. In reality however my hosting provider platform was working with Nigeria’s N200 to $ 1 USD official exchange rate showing that I have well over the required amount.

Long story short, by the time I voiced the above fact, the bank customer service operator told me that N300 to $ 1 USD rate was set for online card transactions, due to the continued fall of the Nigerian Naira, was responsible!

Yet, NO notification was sent out to card users to that effect.

So users discovered that fact only at the point of payment! By implication of the above, my client, who’d I only recently hit with a price increase, to adjust for an earlier value drop, now has to absorb yet another hike to make the payment possible.

My point however is that this is all happening because Nigeria’s major means of earning sustainable amounts of foreign exchange is via crude oil and agricultural sales, for the most part. With the former providing the bulk of the earnings, effectively making us a mono-economy for decades, we were NOT ready for the drastic change in fortunes when it happened.

Now that the oil market is no longer so lucrative, our leaders and people are turning to Agriculture – which is not bad. However, in doing so they are adopting the same mental attitude employed in handling our generation of Forex earnings from crude oil sales.

By this I mean, for instance, that they are working to setup large plantations, agricultural estates, farm settlements and the like.

To be fair to them, such models are proven to be viable and in some areas are already working. The problem I see, which many of those involved seem not to, however, is the fact that this adopted approach takes A LOT of time, money, effort and resources.

This is why despite the lucrative prospects of venturing into agribusiness, so many who want to, have not been able to. And since government itself is no longer exactly swimming in a pool of free-to-spend cash, they are unable to give out as much financial assistance as they would like to.

Add to that the massive hole smashed into Nigeria’s coffers, by the political looters, most still being chased for possible recovery, and it becomes obvious that this capital and resource intensive strategy used for so long is simply not worth making our main focus.

We need to put in place something that can work faster, with much less (if possible zero cost) requirements, while at the same time impacting a larger number of our people.

Such a solution exists and has been in existence for decades.

But it is ALIEN to our society, for the most part. We are simply not used to functioning in such dimensions.

That is why it is understandable that up till this moment, despite ALL the pain, suffering, and lack visited on majority of us, we and our leaders still choose to ignore it or pretend it’s not there.

Yet if we were to adopt it, massive benefits can accrue to us a nation, within a much shorter period, and on a much more sustainable basis compared to what we currently have in place!

This solution requires deliberate use of the Creative Mind, the brain, the thinking faculties – in as many varied ways as possible, to earn income.

To some extent one could argue that we have elements of that happening already in Nigeria. That would be with regard to our entertainment industry. I won’t waste time explaining much.

One example should suffice.

What do David O, Tuface, Olamide, Sunny Ade, Wiz Kid, Seun and Femi Kuti, Lagbaja and so many other musicians getting international recognition do to make money?

Simple. They think up songs and strategies to deliver those songs to their target markets in a way that gets them invited to perform, and also earns them royalties from records sales.

But let’s get real here. Most Nigerian artistes don’t really know what it feels like to live on royalty earnings. The system we have here simply does not protect their interests that well in the respect.

As a result, they depend heavily on LIVE shows for their living. However Lagbaja, the Anikulapo-Kuti Brothers, Asha and other Nigerian acts who have established themselves by traveling and recording internationally, can boast of such royalty benefits being significant. Fela Anikulapo Kuti did that so well, that his albums continue to generate earnings for his offspring toda, MANY years after he’s passed on.

Most people in Nigeria don’t get it but THAT is another way foreign exchange earnings enter Nigeria.

Having said that however, even the music or entertainment creation model does not offer as much rewards to a large population like ours, compared to the solution I have in mind.

Among other things, getting started in music can often require having access to scarce funds. And this has caused some great talents to NOT take off in that industry.

The solution I advocate for adoption has much fewer barriers to adoption – even age is almost no limitation!

The fact that Nigerians in general have not adopted this solution I have in mind, does not imply we are dumb, blind or stupid.

No. It’s more of a problem of one-sided thinking caused by years of exposure to an environment in which VERY little critical thinking is done.

That is why we all think the same way about subject like these. We keep saying oil prices affect our dollar earnings. We forget some countries don’t even have Crude Oil to sell, yet they earn BILLIONS in US dollars annually!

A good example is India.

The Indians are leaders worldwide in software development and sales, and it earns them huge volumes of foreign exchange annually.

Unlike us, they did not sit around waiting for oil wells to be dug and oil to be drilled from them for sale to other countries at the huge expense we all know it takes to do it.

Instead, several decades ago they invested quality time and money to bring in top programmers to teach coding to Indian youths from primary school level on a formal basis.

It was a deliberate strategy that they diligently pursued until they began to turn our armies of young programmers, with the marketing skills to take whatever solutions they created and use the web to reach their target buyers.

Today, we know that many organizations in Nigeria use Indian software, which they often purchase RENEWABLE user licenses for – at premium rates in US dollars, all of which goes right into the Indian economy.

Yet I know of no single digital solution conceived and developed by Nigerians in Nigeria, that is purchased for use by Indians in India – whether as individuals or organizations.

It is also instructive to note that this happens with comparatively less effort and money being expended by the Indians – when compared to the costs we incur to get our crude oil to buyers!

In other words, the Indians (and other nations like them) are making low to zero cost use of the creative intellect of their nationals, across various age groups, to create foreign exchange earning solutions needed on a regular basis by people across the world.

[Hint: Note that I say the above as one who has made sales of my customizable Excel-VB Ration Formulator software to buyers in places like Canada, Philippines, England, Tanzania, Uganda and other countries but NOT ONE sale to anyone – so far – in India. Yet, over 90% of the enquiries posted under one of the most viewed videos for this aforementioned app were made by Indians who repeatedly request in their posts that I send them the app FREE…for some strange reason!]

If we in Nigeria are really serious about getting ourselves out of the mess we are in, with regard to having adequate foreign exchange earnings, we WILL have to look beyond the traditional capital intensive methods we’ve gotten so used to.

We will have to do something similar to what the Indians, Americans and many other developed countries are doing.

We will have to invest MORE time in using the creative intellect of our people, which comes at low to zero cost, to create solutions we can sell to a potentially unlimited global paying audience of eager buyers, just like the Americans and Indians have been doing to us for years.

Once we begin doing that, our own army of creatives will generate solutions that will attract buyers from abroad to pay in foreign currency.

Over time, that will add up like it does for India, giving us enough reserves to NOT have our currency fall so badly in value that prohibitive exchange rates stifle our ability to make online payments for what we want.

No. 228: To Achieve Extraordinary Feats, Be Prepared to Overcome Extraordinary Trials! [Hint: That’s Why You Need Practical Guiding Philosophies to Pursue Success]

“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny” – C.S (Clive Staples) Lewis, 20th century British novelist, poet, literary critic, theologian, broadcaster, lecturer (November 29, 1898 to November 22, 1963)

The above C.S. Lewis quote was shared by a Facebook friend, on her wall, with a question asking if her observation that most successful people have often “been through the absolute worst times” was correct.

Something about the way she made wrote it got me thinking, that not everyone aspiring to success will readily understand why they should accept severe trials, and hardships as necessary stepping stones to achieve their valued goals.

So I wrote THIS piece to explain…

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – To Achieve Extraordinary Feats, Be Prepared to Overcome Extraordinary Trials!

In my case, I learnt that truth by studying books about authentic success achievement, during the darkest days of my struggles as a startup/struggling entrepreneur.

Without the insights I gained from doing that diligent self-education, and the understanding they helped me develop about the need to have a GUIDING PHILOSOPHY for pursuing the success I wanted, I am convinced I would NOT be succeeding the way I am today.

Over 12 years on, since I quit paid employment to start my own business, I am able to build on my successes with confidence and determination, regardless of delays, disappointments or setbacks I encounter.

Without the success philosophies I read and adapted to suit my needs, I would have fallen by the wayside a LONG time ago!

The harsh economic times we’re in are TESTING people to the limits of their confidence, patience and self-belief…

I draw from my personal experiences and studies/investigations, including references and quotes, to explain why, if you want great success, you will most likely, as a matter of necessity have to endure great adversity BEFORE you achieve whatever dreams you set your mind on.

I know this because I made out time to carefully investigate it from my early startup years as a novice entrepreneur.

Among other things, I did a lot of reading e.g. Napoleon Hill’s Think & Grow Rich, Cynthia Kersey’s bestseller “UNSTOPPABLE!” (which tell 45 amazing true stories of entrepreneurs who overcame great suffering to succeed) as well as James Cook’s New York Times Bestseller “The Startup Entrepreneur”.

What I learnt helped me learn how to deal with frequent and prolonged hard times I faced in my business till I gained mastery that enabled me succeed more often.

As time went on, I found, by reflecting on my own experiences, that the authors of those books were right.

In past writings, I’ve noted that James Cook stated in “The Startup Entrepreneur” findings from his personal experiences as an entrepreneur, as well as his research into the lives of over 500 successful entrepreneurs in America.

Among other insights, Cook found that there is a direct correlation between the degree of suffering an entrepreneur goes through and the height of success s/he eventually achieves.

According to him, the greater the suffering, the greatest the height of eventual success achievement.

Jim Rohn, in one of his book explained why the above happens by saying:

“Be grateful for adversity, for it forces the human spirit to grow…there cannot be achievement in the absence of adversity.” –
Jim Rohn

Anyone who wants to achieve sustainable long term success in any area of endeavour in life needs to understand, accept and apply these truths and philosophies in his/her life.

Those who do never feel a need to complain when the going gets tough, because the know it’s going to make them better equipped to succeed.

What I’ve found is that many people do NOT know this truth before they embark on their journey into tough, unpredictable world of business/entrepreneurship.

And that’s why most of the allow hard times they encounter to discourage and make them quit.

Napoleon Hill noted that it’s important to have a guiding philosophy you adhere to (like that outlined in his classic bestseller – Think and Grow Rich), in pursuit of your valued goal, especially to keep you going through adversity or failure which is also known as “Temporary Defeat”.

Question: But who is Burt Dubin, and why do I (Tayo K. Solagbade) think you should you learn from

him?

Answer: Burt is a 3 decade veteran in the professional speaking business. After achieving top level cross continental success as an

expert-speaker, he has established a reputation for mentoring some of the highest paid speakers in the world. He owns SpeakingBizSuccess.com, SpeakingSuccess.com and BurtDubin.com.

Burt helps those he mentors (experts-who-speak) to Position, Package, Promote, and Present* themselves successfully to clients (*He calls

them the 4Ps). That’s why it’s no surprise that on Burt’s website, considerable space capital is devoted to useful business marketing articles as well as products.

It might also interest you to know that MANY years back, Burt established himself as one of the best marketing minds in the world. To really put this FACT in

proper perspective, I’ll provide more specific details in form of an example.

A few years ago, Burt contributed an article to a powerful publication titled “The Most Effective Articles Ever – By The World’s Top Marketers“. That 574 page ebook features timeless marketing advice from 71 of the world’s top marketers – including Jack

Trout, Joe Vitale, Yanik Silver…and Burt Dubin.

That’s ample proof that (in addition to Public Speaking), Burt would be a great resource to learn business marketing from!

Click here to read TONS of Burt’s useful articles on professional public speaking and business marketing.

While there, be sure to download his audio experiences (MP3) on the right. Most importantly, take a few moments to use the link provided on the top right, below the banner, to send Burt a message, about your needs and interest in his mentoring solutions.

Full Disclosure: I represent Burt as Sole Agent for his products/services, which means if YOU buy from him, I get paid.

But that’s NOT the main reason I represent and recommend him. I have benefited in many ways by learning from Burt. Through his writing, his audio recordings,

and from directly relating with him.

Before we teamed up in 2011, I’d been studying his work and adapting it to succeed in my work from way back in 2002. It does not matter what part of the world

you’re in. If you know how to adapt them to suit your peculiar local needs, Burt’s ideas and strategies WILL work for you. I am living proof of it!

That’s why I never tire of CONFIDENTLY recommending him to others.

If you need help putting the ideas shared above to use, let me know HERE.

ONE EXAMPLE: Just yesterday (Sunday 1st Nov. 2015), I met for the first time with a Farm CEO – Mr. Tunde O.<surname removed for privacy>- who bought my Ration Formulator Software and Handbook bundle (for N20,500.0) about 4 months ago.

That happened at a Feed Mill in Oko Oba area of Agege, owned by Engr. Olopade (an elderly but very knowledgeable man) – who I’d also NEVER met before that day!

[NB: The photos of the 3 of us – shown below were taken, at my request (after the session ended) by Tunde’s “madam” who accompanied him in his car to the venue]

Click to view larger image - The photos of the 3 of us - shown below were taken, at my request (after the session ended) by Tunde's

However, the story behind our being able to meet up (3 total strangers!) on a Sunday at a feed mill owned by one of us is a real testimony to the power of intelligent Web Marketing….

****Starts****

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know I’ve been connecting with past buyers of my Feed Formulation Products so they can attend my on-demand FREE workshop

But it’s not been easy to put things together.

Many of those who’d indicated interest had chosen widely differing dates, making it virtually impossible to get the minimum of 5 persons required to justify doing a run of the group training/workshop.

So, I decided to offer them the opportunity to come down on an agreed date for a one-on-one session (still FREE) and/or to buy my Home Study Feed Formulation Video Tutorials DVD.

Most of those who’d indicated interest chose the DVD option. One is yet to get back to me.

But Tunde O.

made it clear he wanted the one-on-one option, as well as the DVDs.

So we agreed Saturday (31st October 2015) which he’d chosen.

Email screenshot - Tunde O. made it clear he wanted the one-on-one option, as well as the DVDs. So we agreed Saturday (31st October 2015) which he'd chosen to attend my FREE one-on-one Feed Formulation Coaching

However, when I called him on Friday (30th October 2015) he told he was at the time in Portharcourt, and would be taking the next flight back to Lagos, but that he had an unexpected change of plans, and so would not be able to make it for Saturday.

In case you wonder, we were trying so hard because he’d told me he would be going on an overseas trip (he’s a Geophysicist and runs the farm part-time with help from relatives and trusted hands), so this FREE window was the best shot we had – and we’d been planning this for close to a month!

Knowing that, I was not ready to let all our hard work go to waste…:-))

We talked a bit more, and eventually agreed to try and see if we could meet for a short version of the session on Friday by 1 p.m. Our projection that his 45 minute flight would end before then if it took off on schedule.

Unfortunately, by the time his flight arrived from PortHarcourt, where he’d gone for an event, it was already 3p.m – and we were not too keen on braving Lagos traffic to the Oko Oba end, where the feed mill to be used as venue is.

So I began making calls to CEOs of feed mills in the area to ask if they opened Sundays.

They all said NO.

I’d known that would be the likely answer…

But I’m always a never-say-never kind of person. So I began calling feed mill CEOs to ask if they would consider opening briefly & explained our peculiar need.

It took almost all day as I did other work, but last night at 10p.m, I finally reached one CEO (Engr. Olopade) who graciously accepted to personally open the feed mill for us at 4p.m the next day – Sunday, since the mill would naturally NOT be open for work, and the staff would not be around!

I recall telling Tunde – and Chuks – another past buyer that I’ve met once that I’d resolved to find a way to thank Engr. Olopade, for being so flexible minded and obviously humble/unassuming. His kind are truly rare in my experience.

It might interest you to know that I called up to 15 CEOs whose numbers I got from online directories, but NONE said YES to my outrageous proposal…

My never-say-die attitude kept me going despite all the blunt refusals I got from each person I spoke with.

THEN I got to Engr. Olopade…whose mobile number I also picked off an online directory of feed mill business CEOs in Oko Oba…and the story changed…!

It was about 10p.m when we spoke. I requested that he allow me use his Feed mill for a one-on-one training for Tunde, explaining the peculiar circumstances.

Note however that before I called him, we had NEVER heard of one another, talk less of speaking.

In other words were 3 total strangers agreeing to meet!

With the exception of Tunde, who had at least seen photos of me from visiting my website, I and Engr. Olopade had no idea what the person we were to meet looked like.

In fact a funny incident occurred when Tunde parked his car at the Abattoir bus stop outside the Police Station, to wait for me.

When I got there, I began trying to call his number to ask where he was parked.

But I kept getting a busy signal. So I had to redial repeatedly.

While doing that my eyes periodically caught an air conditioned blue Honda parked just beside me with a tall heavyset man at the wheel, and a female passenger next to him.

But each time I dismissed the idea of knocking on the window to ask if it was him, because I could not see him holding a phone to his ear. It was only when my call went through and I told him where I was standing that he looked round and our eyes met.

Then we knew! (Hint: Apparently he’d been using the hands-free feature during the previous call he’d been on!)

Long story short, 24 hours later, we were talking like old friends inside Engr. Olopade’s (he’d driven down in a 4-wheeler) feed mill – which turned out to be equipped with a VERY impressive modern milling system, complete with an extruder etc.

Click to view larger image - The photos of the 3 of us - shown below were taken, at my request (after the session ended) by Tunde's

Click to view larger image - The photos of the 3 of us - shown below were taken, at my request (after the session ended) by Tunde's

Before leaving, Tunde had taken Engr. Olopade’s business card, promising to get in touch (regarding milling his feeds there), while I stayed back to discuss several areas of potential collaboration with our host.

Believe it or not, we (Engr. Olopade and I) were together for well over an extra hour, sharing experiences and exploring possibilities!

See how the power of intuition and intelligent use of the web can combine to connect you with your target audience of buyers and potential partners??!!

Among other reasons, I share this story as an example of how not giving up/keeping an open mind/thinking outside the box can enable one make progress to achieve one’s purpose when it seems most unlikely.

This story also illustrates the importance of getting your business online via as many platforms as possible.

If Engr. Olopade had NOT put up his company’s details on the directory I would never have found him.

That’s the power of intelligent Web Marketing!

It enables me earn over 80% of my income via online channels, selling my unique range of 100% original products/services.

Now I’m going to be helping Engr. Olopade setup and promote a branded Facebook business marketing page – at NO CHARGE to him – as my way of saying THANK YOU to him, for his generosity.

Later on a Web Marketing System will follow 😉

If you’re an independent professional (e.g. expert-who-speaks or consultant etc) looking to reach potential buyers/clients at low to zero cost, an intelligent Web Marketing System(WMS) is what you need

It is what has enabled me attract clients/buyers from places like Tanzania, Uganda, Canada, Benin Republic, UK, USA, Philippines, and across Nigeria (from states like Lagos, Delta, Kano, Gombe, Zamfara, Abuja, Oyo, Ekiti, Plateau etc) for my services as a Custom Excel-VB Software developer (especially my Farm Business Software), Freelance writer, Web Marketing Specialist, and Expert-Who-Speaks.

They come to me, without my needing to pay for ANY advertising, or distributing flyers etc.

To get an idea of how my Web Marketing System makes prospects find me, click http://www.google.com (it will open in another window) and type the following words into the search string entry bar, then click SEARCH (or click this: “feed formulation software”)

Unless something changed really suddenly – and BADLY, you’ll see that at least 2 of the 10 results Google presents to you on the first page are about me – with respect to the same software i.e. my Ration Formulator.

BELOW: See the screen shots from the Google results page I generated for “feed formulation software” today – Monday 2nd November 2015 – at 14:48 Lagos-Nigeria time:

Click to view larger image - See the screenshots from the Google results page I generated for 'feed formulation software' today - Monday 2nd November 2015 - at 14:48 Lagos-Nigeria time

Click to view larger image - See the screenshots from the Google results page I generated for 'feed formulation software' today - Monday 2nd November 2015 - at 14:48 Lagos-Nigeria time

What you see happens because of the Web Marketing System (WMS) I use.

But getting found is just one way a WMS helps.

A well implemented WMS goes further to make you pop up again and again, when varying search strings are used, related to YOUR offering! That process in which you show up repeatedly then makes the “searcher” believe you are likely to be the one with the most value-adding solution s/he needs.

EXAMPLE [TRUE STORY]: Last night I got an email from Yemi A.<surname removed for privacy> a Farm CEO who’d contacted me via my website about my Ration Formulator back in August 2014 (i.e. over a year ago).

Email screenshot - [TRUE STORY]: Last night I got an email from a Farm CEO who'd contacted me via my website about my Ration Formulator back in August 2014 (i.e. over a year ago).

I was in Cotonou (my base) at the time and we’d spoken on phone for quite a while. In the course of our discussions, we found we had something in common. Around 1991, he’d worked in Guinness Benin Brewery, with a senior colleague of mine – Sola Adeniran.

I however arrived as a Graduate Trainee Brewer in 1995, by which time he – the Farm CEO – had left the company. So we never met. But Sola was still around and we ended up working together on several occasions. So as we ended our phone conversation, I responded to his query about how I got into software development, despite lacking an IT background, by telling him to ask Sola.

In order to help him understand, I explained that I enjoyed rapid career success for 7 years in Guinness mainly due to the recognition I got for developing custom applications to replace manual reporting systems, using Spreadsheet programming.

Over 4 of my apps were used for formal reporting. Sola himself had requested my help to develop an automated chart-plotting/reporting application for his Utilities Department!

So, when we spoke on phone this morning, the CEO told me he’d attended an event 6 months ago with Sola. I did not ask, but I sensed he must have asked Sola. But this guy was NOT fully satisfied.

After I’d answered all his technical questions about my software, and feed formulation (note that I was – as is my usual habit – the one calling him – the enquirer – at my expense), he asked me to tell him how my app compared with others in the market.

At this point I laughed, and gently teased him saying: Why don’t you just Google “feed formulation software” – I’m sure you’ll get answers readily to that question. You see, I don’t compete. I simply tell people what I offer and leave them to explore available alternatives to make up their minds.

He replied that he’d tried Googling but most of what kept coming up included links to me, which was why he’d come back to me via the last emails we’d exchanged since August 2014 i.e. over a year ago.

That, right THERE, was proof of the power of a Web Marketing System when used the right way on a consistent basis!!

I told him I could not help him any more than I had, and explained that others had found me the same way – including international organizations.

I noted further that in December 2013, a European Union funded NGO paid me to write a 4,000 word Agribusiness paper about the rate of adoption of this same app (my Ration Formulator), by small farm business owners.

Final Words: You can have similar low to zero cost marketing success stories to tell, IF you adopt a custom WMS

I’ve been selling the Ration Formulator mentioned above (with upgrades) since 2004, and most of those I’ve sold it to found me via Google or Youtube, but have NEVER met with me till today, despite buying it.

It’s the same way I sell my Feed Formulation Handbook – which I wrote in 2002.

That’s also how I get hired to ghost-write books for clients.

My WMS is the glue that fits all of them together!

When used correctly, a custom WMS can help you attract eager potential clients/buyers for ANY solution you offer.

It’s like having ROBOCOP on steroids as your 24/7 business marketing manager working to generate sales leads/enquiries even while you sleep!

Do you want to have a similar system working for you?

PS: Burt Dubin‘s Web Marketing System Has Brought Him Clients For His Speaker-Mentoring from Multiple Continents for OVER 3 Decades!

Burt Dubin is mentor to some of the world’s highest paid speakers. And those who have learned from him, as well as those who continue to learn from him (including yours truly) found his via his own equivalent of what I call a WMS.

He evolved and refined it over MANY years to the point that it began generating VERY comfortable passive income streams for him. It was by studying systems like Burt’s that I developed what I call a WMS today.

If a veteran like Burt can use a WMS, it goes without saying that you should as well!

And for as long as that stable sociopolitical climate does not exist, every person running a business will probably have to sleep with one eye open.” – Tayo K. Solagbade

==== [IMPORTANT NOTE:====

On 4th May 2014, Tayo’s 9 year old domain (Spontaneousdevelopment dot com), which hosted his website, was taken over by Aplus.net.

Within a few days however, Tayo used his advanced self-taught web development skills to build a SUPERIOR “reincarnation” of it the website http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

But updates are still ongoing to URLs bearing the old domain name in most of the over 1,000 web pages, and blog posts

he’s published.

If you experience any difficulties finding a page or document, email Tayo at tksola dot com.

Here’s an article Tayo wrote, to inspire others to defy adversity, and bounce back to even greater reckoning at what they do EVERY time:
