PII 129: These Ideas Will Help You Defy Any Adversity to Succeed Anywhere, Doing Anything! [FREE PDF DOWNLOAD]

Even though I discuss this subject with specific reference to succeeding in business, the ideas I share in this 1,000 word (<5 min read) piece apply to achievement in ANY endeavour. I know that because I have used them successfully in paid as well as self-employment.

Indeed, for those who know me and have wondered how I have continually succeeded in achieving my goals, despite repeated visitations of adversity, what I share here provides the answers to your unasked questions!

First, let me begin with a quote I have always found powerfully insightful and inspiring:

“I have no special talents, and in high school I was far below average. I believe that the writings of (Napoleon) Hill sparked my rise, changing the way I thought about my inadequacies and removing many self-imposed limitations. I have no other explanations for the startling success of a person who had been so mediocre.” – James R. Cook, Millionaire Entrepreneur, in his New York Times Bestseller, The Startup Entrepreneur

You need to read Cook’s book (no pun intended) see it on sale here – to get a REAL feel for what he meant in the above quote.

But basically, the story in his book reveals how he went from neophyte entrepreneur, falling flat on his face many times for years, after quitting a salary job and starting a business without a business plan.

It provides elaborate details and eye opening insights what he went through and the lessons he learned about how to keep going, no matter what – until success is achieved.

Hear him…

“Like many others, I assumed that simply because I went into business, quick success would follow. I grievously under-estimated (and still do) the time necessary for a new project to get into the black (i.e. to make profit). Most of the difficulties I encountered couldn’t have been forecast; they always managed to catch me by surprise.” – James R. Cook

It is most often the repeated mistakes, setbacks and disappointments that many aspiring entrepreneurs in Nigeria experience that makes them abandon the idea of running their own businesses.

Many people in this country do not have the mental attitude needed to relentlessly pursue the achievement of sustained successes in their chosen endeavour.

During his active playing days, Michael Jordan was revered by his peers, coaches and fans for his “mental toughness”.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti was the same in his pursuit of musical excellence and human rights activism.

Time and time again he emerged from prison and/or nasty confrontations with agents of oppressive government regimes, especially during the military era, to continue preaching his message.
He had mental stamina, and this enabled him persist despite tremendous physical and psychological suffering he went through.

Gani Fawehinmi and Nelson Mandela also did the same in their respective lives.

It’s not enough to know how to do something; you must also have the mental stamina to deal with the attendant challenges/difficulties that will come up when you are engaged in your chosen endeavor.

Sadly, this requirement is not recognized in Nigeria. Yes, a sound understanding of the need for a success conscious mental attitude is missing in our society. It is neglected in all the various forms of formal/informal education provided in virtually every facet of our society.

This mental preparation is what is lacking when many people start up their businesses. They would often have consulted the right people, attended the right learning events, and mastered the technical aspects of running the business. But they often neglect…

The FARM CEO (Issue 90): Agricultural Prosperity In Dry Africa – by Prof. Dov Pasternak [PDF Download]

This issue of The Farm CEO should have gone out last week, but the connectivity crisis I experienced over the weekend made it impossible. No need for details. What matters is that I’ve now found a solution that (seems to) work(s).

This week, I offer download access to a wonderfully loaded 98 page PDF publication titled “Agricultural Prosperity In Dry Africa” written by a seasoned expert – Prof. Dov Pasternak one of the pioneers of drip irrigation – who, over a 40 year period – played leading roles in (what he’s described as) “the agricultural development of dry Africa on new approaches and strategies that will lead to more successful development.”

Below are excerpts from the book’s introduction and Table Of Contents. Click here to download the full PDF…

Even though I am a scientist, by no means have I written this book in the style of a scientific publication. I present here a summary of my more than 40 years of experience in agricultural research and development in Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Argentina and sub-Saharan Africa. It is written in a style that can be understood by a layman but still appreciated by a scientist. The book deals specifically with agriculture in the Sudano Sahel, a region delineated by 300–800 mm/y rain isohyets stretching from Senegal to Eritrea, but it is relevant to other regions of dry Africa that are in the process of transitioning from traditional to more sophisticated forms of agriculture through a process that we call “development.”

From 1971 until 2001, I was an agricultural researcher at the Institute for Agriculture and Applied Biology (IAAB) of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel. My specialty was research on saline water irrigation. Over a period of 30 years, I tested 36 crop species for salt tolerance acquiring a unique knowledge of a great variety of crops (field crops, forage crops, vegetables, fruit trees and ornamentals). This experience helped me immensely when I became the head of Crops and Systems Diversification at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) Sahelian Center in Niger.

I headed the IAAB from 1975 until 2001. This relatively small institute with a staff of 100 people has had a very significant impact on the development of the Negev Desert in what is referred to by many as the “Miracle of the Desert.” I believe the primary reason for this success was the absolute academic freedom given to scientists leading to and encouraging innovation.

[FREE PDF DOWNLOAD] Screenshot PDF Userguide for Excel-VB Driven Monthly Poultry Farm Manager™ – Created by Tayo K. Solagbade

SDAc’s Excel-VB Driven Monthly Poultry Farm Manager™: Created by Tayo K. Solagbade

The Poultry Farm Manager app works with MS Excel 2007 & above. But it can be modified to work with lower Excel versions

This PDF guide is for the mini “Monthly” version of my Poultry Farm Manager app which has been built as a more pocket-friendly alternative to the original, more advanced version which is a bit pricey.

I’m keen to get smallholder farmers familiar with using smart applications like my Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), to handle their daily farm business data recording, and report generations.

An Introduction To Fertilizers & Fertilizer Management + Calculation (FREE PDF Download)

NB: This FREE report first became available in PDF format in my Self-Development Digest Newsletter, issue No. 72 of Mon 5th Mar 2012.

I offer a sneak preview below. Click the link provided at the bottom, to request your copy.

PREVIEW: FERTILISERS AND FERTILISER MANAGEMENT

Inorganic (or chemical) fertilizers are now an economic necessity on many soils. Three groups of fertilizer materials – based on their ability to supply “fertiliser elements – commonly used in Nigeria are:

1. Nitrogen (N2) fertilizers

They come in 2 groups – organic and inorganic. However, because of its high cost, the organic nitrogen fertilizers have been largely replaced by the inorganic nitrogen fertilizers. Some of the common nitrogen fertilizers are Sodium Nitrate (NaNO3), Ammonium Sulphate – (NH4)2SO4, Urea, Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) etc.

2. Phosphorous (P) fertilizers

Include the following: Rock phosphate, Single Super Phosphate (SSP), Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Ammoniated Super Phosphate etc

3. Potassium (K) fertilizers

Examples are Muriate of Potash (KCL), Potassium Sulphate (K2SO4), Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) etc

Micronutrient Fertilisers: These include Copper Sulphate (CuSO4), Copper Carbonate (CuCO3), Copper Hydroxide – Cu (OH)2, Sodium Borate (Na2B4O7), Ferric Sulphate – Fe2(SO4)3, Sodium Molybdate – Na2MoO4

Mixed Fertilisers: Fertilisers placed on the market contain at least 2 of the so called fertilizer elements (i.e. Nitrogen [N], Phosphorous [P], and Potasium [K]). One of them is “Incomplete Fertiliser” and the other is “Complete Fertiliser”.

When mixed fertilizer is not available, it is possible for the farmer to blend his own fertilizers to the required mixture, but to do this effectively or successfully, he must have a good idea of what his soil’s nutrient requirements are.

Effects of Mixed Fertilisers on Soil Ph

Most complete fertilizers tend to deposit an acid residue in the soil. This is due to the influence of certain nitrogen carriers, especially those which supply ammonia (NH3) or which produce ammonia when added to the soil. The major effect of ammonium ion (NH4+) occurs when they are nitrified.
