What Client Product Development Request to Take Seriously?

When serious potential buyers show great interest in a solution, you don’t want to keep them waiting. Yesterday, I launched a new product i.e. my Sales and Marketing Coaching Service for Farm CEOs. And I’ve not been surprised by the serious enquiries I’m getting about it from old clients.

My interactions with them had told me they needed it…

Sometimes you need to listen to what people are NOT saying, just as much as you listen to what they do say to you.

What they leave unsaid may be a useful indication of where they need help.

The thing is you will not detect such needs unless you train yourself to be alert to their presence.

Years of experience has taught me to devote a good amount of time and effort to diagnosing the unstated needs of those I serve as clients.

And it’s turned out to be a very reliable way to boost the remuneration I get from my work.

Basically, I have now gotten to a point, in which solutions I offer are so value adding, that a growing number of my clients call me to ask that I do more for them.

Just yesterday, a recent Farm CEO who bought my Feed Formulation Handbook and Ration Formulator software, called me to ask for enhancements to the app.

Among other requests he asked if I could include an interface to generate the Phosphorous content of the derived ration.

He also asked if I could develop a version of the app that would enable ration formulation for cattle and other ruminants using concentrates.

We also discussed about having it generate Least Cost Ration Formulas, and also cater for more elaborate amino acids balancing.

I told him that apart from the aspect of catering for use of concentrates for ruminants, I had already commenced work on a much enhanced version of the app.

This superior version is to deliver all the features mentioned above.

But my work is always market driven i.e. I let the demands from my target audience determine what“solution” I accord priority attention, and effort.

Basically, I check for “popularity of” or “interest in” the new feature requested.

If low or poor, I let it go or wait.

If high, I put in the needed investment of time, effort and/or money to make it happen.

In the case of what the Farm CEO wanted, I noted that no other client had ever asked for it. Not one…even though I also felt it was something that would be useful to have…

And this was what made me adopt the currently leisurely pace I employ in working on it.

No matter how much I want to, I have to remind myself that I need to get paid for what I do – and profitably too (Otherwise, I might as well be running an NGO!)

So my efforts will be focussed on projects most likely to yield such rewards

With regard to the above, the Sales and Marketing Coaching service assured of ready interest, by potential buyers.

First of all there was the Akure based Farm CEO who’d contacted me via Facebook 2 years ago, and who I spoke with a few days back….

He’d expressed ready interest in purchasing such a solution if I came up with it.

In addition I had past experiences from working with clients who’d suffered at the hands of market women/other buyers.

The latter were often in the habit of holding the Farm Owners to ransom with regard to buying their eggs and catfish during glut periods.

That told me my new service would fill a gaping market place need.

Furthermore, when I told another Farm CEO client in Jos, who had bought my Poultry Farm Manager software, he promptly expressed interest.

And he even called back to remind me he was ready to call me to find out how to get it, if I so desired.

Compared to the “silence” that has greeted the many references I’ve made to my clients about the advanced Ration Formulator I’m working on, this new service is one that interests many.

And so, I put in the needed work to create and launch it.

Within hours of notifying the Akure based CEO, he responded as follows via phone SMS (see below)

Within hours of notifying the Akure based CEO, he responded as follows via phone SMS (see below)

Creatively presenting my offers using multiple presentation formats

Uploading the introductory video for the service, like I anticipated due to the periodically erratic connectivity we have out here, is taking a while.

I also recognise that this may affect the ability of many interested persons to watch the video as well.

It is for this reason that I’ve created the PowerPoint Slideshow version, which can be downloaded from HERE, and is now also published on Slideshare.net.

It is also why I’ve created an MP3 audio version of the introductory video – which you can request download links to via tayo at tksola dot com.

This will enable as many people as possible gain access to my offer message, and learn what they stand to benefit, as well as how to signup for the service.

As for the enhanced Ration Formulator, I’ll most likely be offering the Farm CEO asking for the customization, a paid service option to have it delivered to him…

Activism Does Not Succeed With Egotism (Case Study of Nigeria’s Activists)

I believe about 80% of Nigeria’s activists let egotism and hidden ambitions diminish their impact. This is based on my personal observations, and subtle testing, of many I’ve related with over the past decade. Screaming, tearing your hair out, or beating your head against the wall won’t change my view. And if youre objective, you’ll likely see that I’m right :-)

Nigerian activists are mostly well schooled members of the elite.

Surprisingly, unlike what happens in other climes, they struggle to achieve critical mass needed to influence significant, lasting change regarding their causes.

As a result, crooked, and poorly schooled individuals in government continue their mis-rule with impunity.

I share some of my views about WHY activism in Nigeria seems so ineffective, and suggest a possible way forward.

Over the past decade, I’ve made many efforts to team up, partner or collaborate with different individuals and/or groups supposedly engaged in activism for various causes.

Very rarely did I record any useful results. Most times I walked away disappointed by the shallowness of the exchanges that took place, and the tendency to “use” followers by “leaders”.

The best and most memorable experience I ever had in my attempts to team up with others to fight for a cause was the anti-fuel subsidy protests held at Gani Fawehimni’s park in Ojota.

For once I saw Nigerians engage in activism in great unison. It was exciting. But it could have ended better. At the tail end, there was a splitting of the ranks that led to decisions about suspending the protest being taken without ALL the activist groups being carried along.

Nigerians love to copy what happens in other countries, especially developed countries.

We copy more or less anything. Including bad fashion styles that make us assault one another’s sensibilities by dressing indecently!

What I however find strange is that we rarely, if at all ever, copy activism done in those same places we copy other things from.

One example…

Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela, Miriam Makeba, Archbishop Desmond Tutu are examples of great black South Africans who practised activism, as a means to FREE their people from Apartheid.

In fighting their cause, they all at various times repeatedly exposed themselves to dangers of all sorts. The protest letters and messages and songs they wrote to the apartheid government, and foreign leaders made them targets of the oppressive regime in power at that time in their country.

As a result they put themselves in harm’s way. Makeba was forced into exile. Mandela found himself in prison etc.

Another example…

In Nigeria, we’ve had real activists like Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Gani Fawehinmi, and Beko Ransome Kuti among others. These people spent extended periods getting negative, often punitive, attention from those they challenged.

They also wrote letters, and messages and songs, which addressed the causes they fought for. They had fans and admirers, but that did not insulate them from efforts launched by those they criticised to hit back at them.

As a result, they often became guests of security agencies in jails across the country. But it did not deter them. And they did not "water down" their messages.

Pastor Tunde Bakare is, for me, one of those still with us, who fits into the ranks of the above mentioned.

There are others of course.

For instance, Wole Soyinka is a seasoned activist still with us, who has intimidating activism credentials. He has proven his mettle at the battle front. Today, he still writes letters and messages and boldly stands up for the causes he supports – by collaborating widely, and selflessly lending his celebrity status to those he teams up with.

But Many Activists Today in Nigeria, Often Let the People Down!

Let whoever the cap fits wear it. I offer no names…but I have identified some guilty of this.

Feel free to accuse me of judging others, or trying to remove a speck from their eyes when I have a log in mine. That would cause me no discomfort whatsoever.

The truth however is that I am sick and tired of seeing the same phoney activists doing their phoney activism both online and off the web – especially ON THE WEB: Facebook in particular!

They make a mockery of what true Nigerian activists have done, and continue to do. And they provide the loop holes, through which the bad guys we are after, can escape.

They give them an opportunity to break our ranks, because those bad guys know they’ll cave in under pressure, that they cannot stand strong in the face of threats or aggression.

That they will compromise for the right price.

That their egotism will make them ALWAYS put "self" above the rest.

These are the reasons why they are unable to UNITE to beat inertia, and build momentum to achieve the critical mass they need to make lasting impact in pursuit of their cause(s)!

That’s why most campaigns they launch often lack meaningful impact, and often fizzle out in no time.

It’s also why they embark on placard carrying protests, which make a mockery of the word itself!

I see many using platforms like Facebook, to propagate their messages to followers who fall over themselves to comment on every post.

To the untrained eye of the uninitiated, rarely will anything seem amiss.

Yet, I see a lot that’s not right in their daily egotistic tendencies exhibited via their Facebook posts/comments, as well as their actions/inactions.

1. They prefer “fans” who agree with views they express, and who rarely tell them where they’re wrong.

2. They keep a distance from other activists they do not know in person, but who have built equally good reputations in fight for the same cause they support.

Each person expects the other to come and introduce him/herself, and propose working together. Neither wants to lose face by taking the first step.

S/he does not want to be seen as “smaller” than him/her. In the process, the causes they support suffer, because the JOINING of forces does not happen, or does so late!

From watching them, it seems each person fears the other person could steal his/her “thunder” or “prestige” by outshining him/her if given too much visibility or recognition in his/her social space.

The above bad habits are all about silly egotism!

And this keeps them from leveraging the power of the social media platforms they use, and even the offline networking that’s open to them.

Once again, the cause(s) they claim to support ultimately suffer(s) LESS momentum as a result.

The Way Forward: Noise Making & Self-Glorification Achieve Too Little!

FACT: Selflessness, spirit of service, integrity, as well as HONOUR are more important requirements for successful activism.

And we have many examples in recent history we can learn from, if we really want our activism to succeed. Otherwise, those we “fight” will never take us seriously!

Mandela and His Fellow Freedom Fighters acted as ONE well oiled team!

No opponent can withstand an assault from that kind of team!

Watching the movie about Mandela’s time in jail, the many efforts made by the apartheid government to split their ranks were dramatized.

False information would be fed to Mandela on the inside that his people on the outside had give in, or given up. Then they would tell him he was alone, and ask him to give up the fight.

But Mandela stayed strong. And so did his colleagues on the outside. Sometimes they managed to slip information to him warning that what he was being told about them was untrue.

They did this even though they knew they could be in danger. This UNITY in spirit, kept them strong, and made it impossible for the adversary to wear them down.

Everyone was willing to serve. No one felt s/he had to be “Oga or big boy/big girl” or “most popular”.

Even over the course of 27 long years that Mandela was in jail, they stayed true to one another.

No one felt s/he was more important than the others.

They covered one another’s backs.

They gladly helped publicize issues relevant to each member, without feeling diminished by doing so.

Today, people from all over the world enjoy visiting and relating with the NEW South Africa, because of the sacrifices made by these true activists!

That was also the kind of team work African Americans used to end black segregation in America.

No one felt s/he was more important than the others. Everyone was willing to put in the needed work, side by side with the next person.

And they readily formed strong alliances with like minded others that the opposition could not break.

Their concerted efforts over time led to the end of segregation, and brought freedom to blacks!

Nigerian Activists MUST stop working in ISOLATED pockets of Egotism & Selfish Ambition!

That is, IF they want useful long term progress in pursuit of the causes they claim to support.

They need to start teaming up selflessly, to form a truly UNITED front that no opposition will be able to crack, regardless of who leads or who follows.

And they will have to maintain that front, even in their online interactions.

Especially on Facebook!

That means they will do what Jean Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Jai White and others with “fans” do on Facebook…

What’s that you ask?

Well, on each of the above person’s facebook page, you get to read his/her own thoughts, ideas and opinions, as well as view photos and videos of himself, or something he likes.

But every once in a while, his fans will also encounter him/her posting of interesting/useful content about one or more of others…some of who could even be described as his rivals.

Nigerian activists must learn to actively collaborate in promoting one another’s causes, and acknowledging each other in the same way.

That is, if they really want to build the MASS and MOMENTUM to succeed with their campaigns!

My Ideas for Making Nigeria Better

Fulfilling Farm Business Best Practice Product Orders, Amidst Chaos (True Story)

[Lagos, 6:49a.m, 6th April 2014] Each time I visit Lagos, I see more reasons to justify not doing any aspect of my work from here.

I spent all of Friday 4th February 2014 – under stressful conditions – battling to prepare and send courier packs to 3 Farm CEOs who paid for my products.

One is based in Kano (Feed formulation Handbook and software), a second, in Jos (Poultry Farm Manager) and the third in Warri (Feed Formulation Home Study Pack).

Holding a Ready-to-Dispatch Print Copy of My Popular Practical Feed Formulation Handbook

I sent 2 of the packs off at 5.15p.m, from the Fedex branch along Ikeja’s Toyin street.

The 3rd goes out Monday a.m once I get additional handbook copies made.

Massive traffic jams all over the area made moving around to get that done soooo hard.

Near zero power supply has meant my having to force myself to do needed work with noise from multiple generators making my head ring – my work rate suffering badly as a result.

Honestly!!

Only the knowledge that my new product offers are bringing in much more sales make it easier to bear.

I still have a past buyer from Tanzania asking for payment details too (for my home study video), while a Kenyan CEO is working to repeat the bank transfer (for my Poultry Manager app), using the corrected domicillary account details I got by visiting my bank on Tuesday.

This rapid increase in orders for physical versions of my products is something I’ll have to handle more from Cotonou.

Not only will it cost about 40% less to produce copies, there’s also a lot less stress involved in fulfilling orders from that end.

Would you believe, I had to walk 2.5 hours from Ikeja to my home, when after waiting 4 hours from 4p.m till after 8p.m, the traffic jam along the routes failed to ease up?!

But in a way it was fun. I decided to make it fun, rather than let it affect my mood. And I’m always ready to push my fitness level higher :-)

However, the chaos, and extremes out here remind me of why I moved to Cotonou, and why once I find a willing property owner, I’ll move my family to join me.

As I began walking from the bus stop, 2 young chaps in their mid 20s to early thirties joined me. I’d told them while we waited that I would walk home if the traffic jam did not improve.

The traffic situation already bad for weeks before, due to elaborate road repairs being carried out, really peaked that day.

I would later learn it was due to the monthly exodus of thousands of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)’s members to their “camp” along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

I and my new young friends chatted about Nigeria, about corruption and eventually about our work.

This made our progress faster, as we walked. About 400m past the Grammar school bus stop, my friends found a bike rider willing to take them to Akute, their final destination.

We exchanged contacts, they left, and I continued walking another 15 minutes to my home.

The top of my Cotonou sewn native outfit was drenched in sweat.

My thick soled army regulation type leather shoes were completely covered in brown dirt from the long trek, making me shake my head in self pity.

I slept at 11.45p.m that Friday, after taking my meal and posting the blog article for the day.

Waking up Saturday morning at 7.30a.m, I watched movies with my kids all day (Jamie Foxx’s “The Whitehouse is down” is GREAT!).

At last I felt as relaxed as I’d wanted to be since coming down to see them!

A few days back they’d surprised me by baking and selling cakes without an oven like I taught them late last year.

I’d challenged them to do it as part of “celebrations” of the anniversary of my 1st year in Benin Republic.

I’ve been bragging to everyone about the zero oven charcoal stove cakes being made, and sold by them…and even wrote a blog article about it on Thursday:

http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/sometimes-youll-need-to-keep-it-within-your-family/

Despite all that’s happened, I cannot deny that Nigeria’s peculiarly harsh atmosphere drives people to function at their best.

Apart from pushing me to explore smarter and more creative ways to get my work done, it’s helped me start my kids on the entrepreneurial path, towards achieving financial independence.

That’s a dream I’ve had since the first child was born, in 1999.

Having said that, I know it’s better to expose them to other societies, like Cotonou, Douala, Accra, so they can see that life does not have to be so hard, harsh and tough.

That 20 hour hustling need not be a way of life.

That corruption is not a pandemic there, like it is here.

That in those societies laws often work, social order exists, making it inevitable that wrong doers, small or big, get duly punished.

I realize I need to let them see all that, lest they conclude that the many negatives they see growing up in Nigeria, are “normal” and unavoidable.

And that’s why I’m eventually going to make them travel with me.

To Sell with Your Writing, Touch on Different Areas of Your Target Audience’s Life

Successful selling in any area of life requires gaining the trust of the prospective buyer. If you think about why YOU buy things, you’ll likely discover multiple factors often influence your final decision.

For instance, I have bought tutorial CDs and books on a variety of subjects, because I felt they would be useful for my kids’ education.

But not classroom education now.

I refer here to my plan to make them acquire real world relevant knowledge about vocations one can venture into. Examples include various aspect of cooking e.g. baking. And this is why today, they bake cakes without using an oven, which they sell during break time in their school.

So I buy products and services with my kids, their mother, or other loved ones in mind.

But I also look out for items that offer potentially useful value me, in my personal life, as well as for the work I do.

Many people who want to sell will benefit by adopting a similar holistic perspective in thinking about their potential buyers.

The truth is you can make your sales offers by carefully presenting them from a variety of angles that touch on the target audience’s potential interests.

I’ve been doing this for years. My realization of what makes me buy, led me to an epiphany of sorts about how to sell to others.

Nine times out of ten, selling involves explaining benefits to people.

And that requires talking, or writing, or doing both…as creatively as possible.

A look at how I do my multidisciplinary writing on this blog provides a good case in point.

Most of your prospects will have interests that cover different aspects of life. They cannot help it, as long as they are human.

Writing on different categories, however works better if one weaves in references, where relevant or possible, to solutions you offer.

It can be done. You just need to do some creative thinking.

If you’ve ever wondered why I write on seemingly unrelated multiple categories on my blog, the above is why I do it.

1. Business Owners Often Interested in Entrepreneurship…So I Write About It

Basically I share true stories and experiences about my life as an entrepreneur.

From my goof ups to my big wins, I creatively present information and education to help others.

Not only does this cement my credibility as a hands on entrepreneur in the minds of readers, it also moves those interested in solutions I offer, closer to connecting with me by making enquiries or buying.

2. Some of My Prospects Have Full Time Jobs…So I Write About Career Development

So many of my recent buyers have turned out to be people working full time in well paying jobs, who have chosen to start their businesses part time.

Most times they use what they earn from their jobs to finance their business start-up and expansion.

This implies that if they keep doing well, or better at work, they’ll have more money to channel into their part time ventures.

And possibly at some stage grow it big enough to go full time in it.

By sharing my experience based ideas about succeeding in paid employment, such individuals can discover me. And in the process, some also discover I offer products they need to run their part time businesses better.

Examples include my feed formulation handbook and/or software, my poultry farm manager, my payslip generator, Self-Development Bible etc.

3. Some of My Prospects Have Kids…So I Write About Parenting

An oil company engineer, whose wife just had a baby boy, may suddenly develop an interest in parenting. Before then, when he was a bachelor, he would have had little or no interest.

In other words, an effort to learn more by reading ideas on parenting, could make a visitor discover a solution s/he has been looking for, on the site offering the parenting ideas.

I’ve been writing parenting articles for over a decade, but not because I want to use it as a strategy for selling myself or my products and services.

Instead, it’s a passion I have, to help parents get the best out of their kids. So I demonstrate the power of my parenting ideas by exposing my kids to them, and sharing the results we get.

This way, readers gain insights they can apply in their own homes. They appreciate it so much that some email me to say thanks, while others signup to get more via my newsletter.

In the process, some may discover solutions I offer, and make contact. See examples in the screenshots of some emails I received below…

Final Words: Use Your Writing to Touch on Different Areas of Your Target Audience’s Life

The above examples are based on successes I’m achieving in my use of multidisciplinary writing, to attract potential buyers of my unique range of products and services.

The increasing rate of success proves that it pays to be less direct – subtle in fact – when marketing your solutions.

Years ago, I learnt – the hard way – that people resist being “sold”.

They prefer to feel they did the buying on their own, and not because it was forced down their throats.

Stealth is another word that describes this approach.

To succeed often, write about subjects that interest those who fit your target audience profile.

The truth is however that such subjects may not necessarily relate in any way to what you even sell.

Instead, make sure what you write is truly useful to those who read it.

That will make them like you, and take you seriously.

Over time, they’re more likely to trust you…

And when people trust you, they will often buy from you.

You’ll consequently be able to tell friends and associates, about your rapidly increasing sales conversions…like I did in exceprts below from an email I sent out today:

"Right till close of work Friday 4th April 2014, I was tidying video tutorials to go with courier packs for 3 Farm CEOs who sent payment from Kano (Feed formulation Handbook and software), Jos (Poultry Farm Manager) and Warri (Feed Formulation Home Study Pack)…

I sent 2 of the packs off via Fedex at 5.15p.m, at Ikeja’s Toyin street. The 3rd goes out Monday a.m once I get the handbook copy made.

My new product offers are bringing in much more sales…

I still have a past buyer from Tanzania asking for payment details too (for my home study video), while the Kenyan CEO is working to repeat the bank transfer (for my Poultry Manager app), using the corrected domicillary account details I got by visiting my bank on Tuesday."

But to reap such rewards, my experiences strongly indicate one must keep doing it for the long term.

Can you do that?

If yes, I assure you that phone calls and emails from eager prospective buyers of solutions you offer WILL come your way MUCH MORE frequently, than they currently do!

Earning Income Working From Anywhere (True Story)

Yesterday, I was in a Cotonou taxi headed for the Benin Republic-Nigeria border, when Alhaji Usman S., CEO of a pelleted livestock feed manufacturing company in Nigeria’s Kano State, called, and we spoke like old friends…even though we have NEVER met.

I’ve been having such conversations weekly, with increasing frequency since last year…

If truth be told however, I could not have taken my work to the level it is today, if I’d stayed in Nigeria.

Erratic power supply, and other annoyances would have drastically held me back.

So, the insight that led me to relocate to Benin Republic, from Nigeria, now looks great (on hindsight). I’ve been able to work often uninterrupted for 20 hours daily for most of the past year.

And that’s now yielding fruits that I describe in the rest of this article.

NB: Interestingly, some misinformed persons who write me, assume I either buy articles – or have a team of writers working for me. Nothing could be further from the truth. I ALONE create ALL the content on this site. I’ll address this fully in my next article.

But back to Alhaji…

He first called my MTN Nigeria mobile, last September (2013) after coming across my Ration Formulator video on Youtube. Only 6 months ago.

That day, I was in Lagos, conducting questionnaire surveys for my agribusiness case study research paper. He spoke with me for almost 30 minutes, expressing his appreciation for, and interest in my work. We ended that conversation, with him insisting I send him payment details so he could send funds for the handbook and software.

A day later, I did that, but never heard from him.

But a Farm CEO based in Uyo, who recently purchased my Ration Formulator and Feed Formulation Handbook, told me he needed information about manufacturers of feed packaging bags. It occurred to me that Alhaji might have useful contacts that could help my client. So, I reached out to him.

He confirmed that he had such contacts, and readily offered to help my client.

But before we ended the call, he brought up the issue of the products he wanted to buy, explaining that he’d traveled right after asking me to send payment details.

By the time I hung up, he’d reconfirmed the payment details. This afternoon the payment came through. Tomorrow, I’ll send his pack, containing the Ration Formulator CD and Handbook, via ABC Transport courier service.

Once again, another total stranger has taken a leap of faith to buy from me – even though I have no office, and shuttle between 2 countries!

Exactly ONE year ago today, I left my family in Lagos-Nigeria and relocated to Cotonou in Benin Republic, to work as a Location Independent Multipreneur.

It was the first lap of a journey I’d resolved would take me across the entire West African region. Indeed, I’m now preparing to MOVE ON to another Francophone African nation, though Cotonou may remain my base.

I’d planned to celebrate this maiden anniversary by opening my small brew pub in a larger rented Cotonou property, which my wife and kids would eventually join me to run.

So far however, it’s been hard to find a property owner willing to let me use the rented residence the way I plan. At least that’s what those I’ve met have said. I’m thinking they have some fears as well. So I’m thinking I’ll just get a larger place, bring my family down, and simply start by offering home delivery and pick up service.

I’m writing this from my home in Lagos, today 1st April 2014.

Apart from coming down for a meeting with a new Web Marketing client (who used to be the accountant of a company that has been using my Payslip Generator since 2007 – but has now launched his own consultancy since  January), TODAY – like I said earlier – makes it EXACTLY ONE YEAR since I relocated to live and work from Cotonou, Benin Republic.

So, I wanted to spend the day and the rest of the week with my loved ones. I wrote THIS article for my blog as part of the “celebration”.

The benefit of hindsight shows clearly that my decision to relocate was a good one.

For instance….

1. Yesterday, a Farm CEO from Tanzania, who bought my Ration Formulator software last year, wrote me an email that he wanted to buy my new Feed Formulation (and Compounding) Home Study Video Package.

This is my latest product, and it includes the popular feed formulation handbook and a 4 hour video tutorial in which I explain the theory and practice of feed formulation using my handbook’s pages as a reference on the screen.

I’ve since replied him to confirm that the price of the Home Study Package is N25, 000. And it includes the software, a physical copy of the handbook, and the DVD containing the 4 hour video series, PLUS the PDF user guide for the software etc

As a member of my Farm Biz Ideas club, however, he will only pay N15k, since each member get a 40% lifetime discount on ALL my other products and services .

See the link below for details:

http://www.tinyurl.com/ffHomeStudy

2. Last Friday, a consultant in Kenya (who had been corresponding with me for over 3 weeks), emailed me confirmatory details of payment sent by his Farm CEO client, to purchase the lower priced, monthly/mini version of the more pricey full fledged Poultry Farm Manager software.

See the preview PDF of the monthly/mini version here:

However, my online account failed to reflect the payment, right up till today, even though they’d sent me the automatic transcript generated from the bank transfer process in Kenya.

Luckily, I was in Lagos, when he wrote in this morning to say the bank in Kenya had told his client that the account information I’d supplied was not complete/accurate.

So I replied that I would visit the bank in the morning, and have them sort it out for me.

By 4p.m today, I was able to send him detailed feedback supplied by the bank. Basically, they found out that I’d sent the wrong account details to Kenya. All things being equal, the Farm CEO will be able to make payment when he tries again.

Having said above, it’s the fact that they stuck with this effort to send payment that I want to highlight…

Neither the consultant, nor his client has ever met me in person.

We only spoke for the first time last Friday.

I called the consultant to discuss specifications of features for a hatchery module they are looking to have me develop, and integrate with the existing app, if they are satisfied with the latter, post usage.

Final Words: A Great Way to Celebrate!

In other words, I’m saying all these farm owners and stakeholders reaching out to me only have my Web Marketing System to work with.

But when they make contact, I show up as represented, and that convinces them to go ahead and send payment – and some return again!

There’s no better way, than THAT, to celebrate one’s first anniversary as a Location Independent Multipreneur!

No. 135: Succeed by Speaking Part-time With a Full Time Job!

Some experts in paid employment are doing great things others can learn from. You may be one of them. Do you know you can earn extra income by sharing what you know with others as a part-time speaker? I offer ideas you can use in this issue of my Speaking Ideas newsletter.

Some Self-Employed Experts Are (Technically Speaking) Holding Full- Time Jobs

I refer especially to those self-employed persons who do not yet offer speaking services. If you’re one, you’ll want to read this through as well.

You see, I have all sort of conversations with self-employed experts, as well as career persons in paid employment. By phone, email, Skype, Facebook etc.

Most don’t have much time to spare. Even those who work for themselves, are NOT as free as they CAN be. Look, the only reason most people at work for themselves, or in the employ of some company say “I don’t have time” for something they have interest in, is often that they can’t see enough benefits.

What I propose in this article can help such persons earn added income – an attractive benefit.

Example 1: A Catfish Farm CEO based in Ibadan

I’ve known this gentleman since mid 2013. But we’ve never met. We discuss the amazing results he’s getting by using cheaper alternative ingredients, in formulating rations for his fish.

When we spoke late last year, he was getting great output from using Gari (Cassava flour) at up to 40% inclusion levels. About a week ago, when we spoke, he revealed that he now uses Palm Kernel Cake at much higher inclusion levels than normal, and that it’s yielded about 15% increase in growth rates.

Now, I had called him on behalf of a CEO in Uyo, who’d purchased my Ration Formulator and wanted ideas of low cost alternative ingredients he could use. I knew this could help my client.

When I told this Ibadan based CEO that he needed to talk to other farmers about results he was getting, he agreed saying “You know, I’m actually thinking I need to do a video and put on Youtube….”

At that point I saw the problem he was having.

He knew his own business well. But he did not know how to go about putting what he had to offer together in a manner that would attract the right attention and interest…with benefits that would make doing so worthwhile for him!

Truth is, he needs the help of a competent guide or a coach…or mentor!

But not just any guide, coach or mentor. He needs one who can help him “prepare, package, promote, and present” what he knows to others, VERY often for profitable financial gain.

Further down, I suggest one powerful example of such a mentor…

Example 2: My Accidental Foray Into Expert-Speaking While In Paid Employment

It happened in 1999. Between 1995 and 1999, I’d really broken boundaries as an employee in Guinness.

Among other achievements, I’d used my spreadsheet programming skills, to completely replace manual data entry and reporting systems in the brewing department.

Word had quickly spread about what I’d done. And I’d gotten career boosting secondments.

I still recall a visiting manager from the Lagos Harp brewery told me I was called “Super Brewer” in Lagos. Also, one day I was in the HQ block in Lagos. A Nigerian senior manager heard someone call out my name, as he climbed up the stairs.

He stopped and looking at me, saying: “Are you the Solagbade in Benin Brewery?” I replied that I was.  He then said “Keep up the good work!” and continued up the stairs.

I was 29 years old. You can imagine what that did to my morale. It made me feel like doing more!

Not long after, while on annual leave, I came across an advert in the papers regarding the Annual Young Managers Competition (now defunct).

It was organized by the Nigerian Institute of Management’s Young Management Competition.

Photo of flyer: I came across an advert in the papers regarding the Annual Young Managers Competition (now defunct). It was organized by the Nigerian Institute of Management.

Zonal competitions would hold across the country, from which winners would be selected for the National Finals to be held in Lagos.

When I read through the requirements, it immediately struck me that a lot of what I’d done in Guinness qualified for entry into the competition. They basically wanted experience based management papers.

I thought about the Malta Guinness bottling beer waste investigation project I’d carried out, which led me to derive a formula I called Total Waste Unaccounted For (TWUF)™.

The Packaging Manager (Alex Okorodudu) had assigned me to the project over a year before.

After spending many days collating past records and recording new ones, I’d used a spreadsheet to trend beer volumes sent from the bottling tanks to the filler machine.

The TWUF™ values were then plotted in bar chart form. We eventually discovered the high wastes being recorded were caused by faulty operator cut-off of “chase water” used to clear the beer line.

The TWUF charts and values led us to this solution, because they showed we were losing MORE beer than we had in the bottling tanks at start. And that of course was not possible!

I felt a surge of excitement as I thought about sharing that story.

Then I also wanted to talk about how (using my apps) we automatically generated Process Control charts in the brewing department, that were printed out and pasted on notice boards.

Once we noticed a brew with KPIs going outside the normal upper or lower control limits, we quickly tracked down the operator who handled it. Sometimes we also liaised with the brewer s/he worked with, to find out what went wrong.

This enabled us proactively manage the process to minimize out of control performances. As a result, we had much more consistent output.

So, I began writing my management research paper titled “Statistical Process Control and Target Setting in Manufacturing Companies”.

I ended up using my entire annual leave period – and asking for time off to attend the National Finals   after resuming work). I also used a huge chunk of my leave allowance, to print and send about 7 copies of my thick spiral bound paper, to the NIM headquarters.

As I explained in an article written years back, I won 2nd place at the zonal finals, and placed 5th (out of 8th contestants) at the National Finals…despite flopping my presentation very badly at the latter event!

When I was called out to get my prize (and later interviewed by a journalist…about my goof-up!), I knew it had been worthwhile.

Today, I work as a Best Practice Farm Business Support Specialist, developing customizable Excel-VB driven apps, that are paid for by Farm and other business CEOs, within and outside Africa.

Many of my apps (like the Poultry Farm Manager, the Ration Formulator, and the Payslip Generator) auto generate KPIs that help the business owner make intelligent decisions on a daily basis. And I offer talks and training programs for my clients on Best Practices, Feed Formulation etc.

Looking back, I Realize I Could Have Launched My Career As a Part-Time Expert-Speaker Back Then!

The competition had given me an excellent start-up opportunity…

Brandishing a “National Finalist” tag from an event sponsored by Nestle, and organized by the country’s Institute of Management, in addition to holding a job with a large multinational manufacturer, would have gotten me the serious attention and interest of many!

But it did not occur to me then. However, YOU have an opportunity to reap the benefit of MY hindsight!

You can use your full time job as a spring board to become an expert-who-speaks.

Many who get paid handsolmely as expert-speakers started out doing it part time. They chose a subject that was close to their hearts, and began offeriogn speaking programs to meeting planners.

You can do the same.

Even if you don’t want to go full-time, you can continue doing it part-time, earning extra income!

If the above appeals to you, I recommend you do what those who succeeded did….

Achieve Increased Marketing Success Using This System

I’ve used it for years, at zero cost, to repeatedly attract prequalified prospects, who periodically buy from me, and/or refer others to do so. It’s difficult to imagine ANY website owner being averse to such benefits. I explain how YOU can have such a system.

FACT: If Google Sends People to Websites Unrelated to Their Searches, They Will STOP Using It

That’s why the smart owners of Google continually weed out irrelevant websites from their search results.

It’s also why millions of us love using Google.

We TRUST that engine to turn up the juiciest results available online, relevant to our search.

It’s a symbiotic relationship between Google and her users. No sentiments involved.

As long as we get quality search results, we’ll keep using it.

Otherwise, we’ll do our searching elsewhere.

Anyone Who Wants to Succeed In Web Marketing Will Be Wise to EARN Google’s Trust!

Your priority should be to get so trusted by search engines, that they GLADLY send people to you.

Set yourself up in a way that let them know doing so will make them look good!

Key to achieving the above is your creation of useful content. They’ll know that a link from your website on a subject is likely to delivery quality information to the searcher, that will make her HAPPY to have found you.

And next time, such a HAPPY searcher, will want to use their engine AGAIN, based on the last great experience.

That’s the Key to Attracting Pre-qualified Traffic (of Potential Buyers) to Your Website

I tell people this all the time.

Don’t just seek to increase your Website traffic. Aim to increase traffic of pre-qualified prospects to your site.

Saying you want to increase your traffic means nothing. What happens when you get such an increase in traffic?

What if the increase comes from visitors who clicked on a link that promised FREE gift prizes? That’s unlikely to benefit you.

You need your traffic to comprise mainly PEOPLE looking for what YOU OFFER!

Typically, such people would use search engines, and follow links in discussion forums, social media and other websites.

To improve your marketing, you need to adopt strategies that get your solutions noticed more frequently, by MORE of such pre qualified prospects.

Since you will not know where to easily find them in large enough numbers, the best bet is to make your offers MORE VISIBLE on the web.

This requires showing up in as many online “channels” as possible.

The easiest and most cost effective way to achieve that, is to boost your search engine visibility.

In other words, taking smart steps to show up in as many ways as possible in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

How do you do that?

Simple. And I said it before: Get the search engines to trust you!

You will do this by building an irresistible online presence, by creating useful content, and actively propagating it via multiple channels, using a cost, time and effort saving system.

Note that your online presence goes beyond your website…to include a combination of online real estate, that you creatively make use of, to propagate your creatively generated – and useful – content.

In my case, I use this blog, on my website, from which content gets syndicated via RSS feeds to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, PInterest, Youtube etc.

Then I also use platforms like Ezinearticles.com to build critical mass of quality article content to enhance my marketing reach and impact.

All of that serves to link me with continually evolving mass of useful creative content. And the search engines like that.

Which explains why I’m getting NOT just more visits/traffic, but also more enquiries from visitors, who are often potential buyers.

Interestingly, some of those who go on to pay have told me they were referred to me, by another person who had NEVER bought anything from me. S/he was just a subscriber to my blog or newsletter.

Isn’t it amazing how this system can make total strangers that confident about recommending you?!

What You Need to Succeed Is a Web Marketing System (WMS)

It’s not just a random mix of resources that I use. There’s more to doing it than that.

If that was not the case, many would already be doing it!.

In truth, it takes careful thinking and planning, to come up with the right approach for each online presence.

What works for me, may not be applicable for you.

That’s why the process starts with deriving a Web Marketing Strategy…which is like a business plan for your online presence.

From there, a custom Web Marketing System will be developed.

And once that is ready, implementing it daily, with relentless persistence is the next step.

When done right, success is ALWAYS inevitable.

I say this from years of succeeding using the same approach – which is why others contact me today for help with marketing their own websites.

A WMS will enable you achieve a self-sustaining online presence, that progressively boosts your marketing reach and impact…

In the process, you/your website will earn the needed name recognition, and credibility, to attract your target audience of potential buyers.

A Word of Warning: This approach is not one that yields overnight success.

However, my success, and the success of myriad others who have used it for years, confirm it delivers powerful and timeless marketing benefits, to those who diligently work it.

If you have a passion for what you do, the above requirement can only excite you.

And if it does, then YOU are most likely to be the kind of person I CAN help, and would therefore gladly work with.

My Suggestion: Signup for a FREE 15 minute consultation session with me

Two main options exist:

I can either show you how to do it, or I can do it for you.

We’ll meet via Skype to discuss your needs and options.

If that appeals to you, click here to send me your message.

Question: Why Should You Believe I Can Help You?

Well, you’re reading THIS, right now…

Quite often, THAT will be proof of the effectiveness of the WMS I use :-)

What’s more, over the past decade, I have developed WMSs (which included writing paid articles and website content) for clients in Real Estate, Medicine, Audiology, Environmental Consulting, Hotels, Bars and Restaurants, Engineering, Legal Consulting etc.

And apart from the work I do for clients, I also publish at least one NEW article (500 words to mostly over 1,000) from Monday to Saturday (sometimes Sundays) on this blog.

My Writing (Which is Often Experience and Research Based) Covers 6 Different Categories:

1. Writing/Blogging, Self-Development (including Health and Wellness, Motivation etc)

2. Career Development

3. Public Speaking

4. Parenting

5. Entrepreneurship.(with special focus on Farm Business)

7. Travel and Tourism)

The above is done according to my publishing schedule.

You can also explore over 170 articles I’ve written on different topics published at Ezinearticles.com since 2005.

No. 133: To Succeed, Find Correctly Motivated Buyers

Why do people who buy YOUR services do so? Do you know? In this article, I explain why knowing the answer to that question, is the key to your long term selling success, as a service provider.

The insights I share can make you more effective in selling your services for the long term, IF you apply them.

Societies Differ In the Value They Place on Specific Types of Solutions

This applies to both products and services, but more to the latter in my experience.

A person can easily make a living as a chiropractor in the USA. But s/he could literally starve trying to sell the same service in my home country, Nigeria.

Unless s/he’s smart enough to find enough of the few people who value such a service e.g. expatriates from societies where such a service is valued. Most Nigerians, even wealthy ones, would NOT pay worthwhile fees (if at all they show any interest) for such a service.

Possible exceptions would be instances when they see it as an opportunity to show off, or prove they belong to a prestigious social class.

Now that, could catch the money spending attention and interest of some who can afford it.

They would typically be people who buy to prove a point, and not because they need the service. They are people who sometimes spend to avoid being outdone by others. Crazy? Maybe. But it’s true!

Which brings me to the issue of buyers’ motives…

Let Me Illustrate With a Personal True Story

One morning, a few years back, a real estate expert I’d interacted with over a series of months, initially by phone and later in person, called me up.

After we’d exchange pleasantries, he said:

“Look, I need you to come down so we can finalize and get started on building my website. I really need it now. When can we meet?”

For me, I had been a bit surprised. He’d always spoken as if he considered having a website a waste of time. So when we met, I asked him why he suddenly decided he was ready to use a website.

His reply confirmed his ego was still in the driving seat of his decision making. For me, that was NOT good!

He said “Come, let me show you this website” motioning for me to come to his side of the table, and look at his laptop screen display.

There I saw a beautifully designed real estate website with pretty pictures of properties for sale. It had all the bells and whistles installed. You know the type :-)

I said “Is this the kind of website you want?”

“No. I want something better!” he replied, looking at me as if to say “How can you even ask me that?”

Then he added “Do you know the guy who owns this site, started out only few years ago. Last time we met, he was not doing anything special. But if he can own this kind of website, then I must have mine, or people will start thinking he’s bigger than I am!”

As he said those words, I knew it was potentially one of those nightmare projects that would never go well. So, I offloaded him gently, by pushing my fees higher than normal, to a point I knew he’d balk at :-)

Over time, I’ve found that in my part of the world, farm business owners tend to be the most authentic of clients one can find. Most times their motives are based on the need to get real results – otherwise their investments go down the drain. And so, most times they take you seriously when they hire you.

A Web Marketing System (WMS) Will Increase Your Chances of Getting Found By Buyers with the Right Motives

It has been my experience that buyers with the right motives, tend to be fewer in number. For that reason you need to use more rigorous marketing strategies to find and attract them. This is why depending mainly on face to face, networking and “connections” to promote your service is not wise.

And that’s why I recommend using a combination of strategies.

At the core of your marketing arsenal, should be the intelligent use of what I call a Web Marketing System (WMS).

It does not give results overnight.

But done right, it will help GROW your name recognition and credibility as an expert at what you do.

I’m living proof of that fact …and I offer some recent examples to illustrate that fact:

This past weekend, I got a web contact form enquiry from a business owner from Barbados (a first…see below), for my Feed Formulation Products.

Screenshot: I got a web contact form enquiry from a business owner from Barbados

I also received a phone call from a UK based Nigerian, who told me he was just reading one of my articles, and wanted to know how to pay for my Ration Formulator™ software.

Then at 4.00a.m this morning, a chap who’d had a Facebook chat session with me, a year ago, about buying my Payslip Generator (or learning to build it himself), returned to post a request on my wall (see below):

Screenshot: At 4.00a.m this morning, a chap who’d had a Facebook chat session with me, a year ago, about buying my Payslip Generator (or learning to build it himself), returned to post a request on my wall

Earlier in the week, I’d gotten a call from a Farm CEO based in Uyo, who confirmed he’d received the Feed Formulation learning package I’d sent him via DHL, following his payment.

Those are just a few examples. A number eventually result in actual sales. Some are good friends with me today, even though we’ve still never met.

There’s ONE main reason total strangers reach out to me, REPEATEDLY in the ways described above.

And that’s because I’ve used my WMS to put out credibility boosting information about the solutions I offer – in various formats (e.g. Ezine articles, Youtube videos, ebooks and free download resources of all kinds) – using a variety of channels (e.g. my website, on Facebook, Twitter, PInterest etc).

And this is not something I just did once, and sat back to enjoy benefits from.

No.

I’ve been doing it regularly for years. That’s the key: doing it over and over – but adding new content CREATIVELY.

That increases the mass of useful information linked to me, that’s relevant to what buyers with the right motives want. And so they get in touch.

Use Careful Observation, Combined With Critical Thinking, to Detect Buyers with the Right Motives

Why do companies hire Motivational Speakers to address their employees for one to a few hours? Why do meeting planners for trade associations invite experts-who-speak to deliver their trademark programs to their members?

Ideally, they want such speakers to help their members/employees perform better. Rarely would bias or favouritism be allowed to influence the process of choosing the RIGHT speaker for their event.

The reality in the real world I’ve had to offer speaking services as a Self-Development and Performance Improvement Specialist, has however tended to be a bit different.

You see, as a multipreneur, I offer a variety of solutions to different target audiences.

However, as stated above, I’ve found Farm Business Owners to be the most profitable group. So in line with the Pareto principle, I spend at least 80% of my marketing time/effort reaching out to them.

In whatever free time I have left, I try to connect with other groups. And I periodically make sales.

But between 2002 and 2005, my early start-up years, I’d not gained the above insights.

So I wasted (based on hindsight now) a lot of effort on marketing my Self-Development and Spontaneous Coaching™ learning events.

My objective was to get invited as a speaker and trainer in organisations.

What I discovered was that many (please note: NOT all) of the decision makers had different motives for engaging learning service providers.

Quite often, only people who were willing to play certain games (mostly unethical), or those who knew someone (who knew someone!) up “there”, got hired.

As a result, I found that I got repeatedly ignored.

Yet, I knew I could add value to many employees and their companies with my ideas. So I began putting them on the web via articles, special reports, a flagship Workplace Performance Improvement seminar offer, my Self-Development Bible etc.

Today, that strategy has paid off in some ways.

Take the example of my 10 item customisable Employee Workplace Morale Survey Quiz (approx 23.5KB).

I call it the “Employee Morale Gauge (available as an MS Excel workbook). I wrote an article based on it, titled “Are Your Employees Happy & Satisfied with Their Jobs? (A Ten Item Quiz That Can Help You Find Out)“.

In 2008, it was republished – with my permission – by India’s ICFAI University (with Sangeetha K. as author) in their 252 page journal titled “Employee Morale: Concepts and Cases” now on sale here(see item 14).

The article/10 item quiz has also been purchased by the Human Resource Development Manager of a US company, and at least one company in the UK currently offers it as a download for clients on their website.

Few Organisation in My Local Market Have Ever Shown Interest…Strangely (?)

Apart from speaking at the Centre for Management Development in 2002, and a few other gigs, I got little success as a speaker in my local market.

On the few occasions I got hired, I knew upfront before the decision came. I was basically able to sense that the decision makers wanted results.

They wasted no time on mind games of any sort! (See below)

Screenshot: Email correspondence from a decision maker to me regarding my invitation as guest speaker to the Annual Entrepreneurial Lecture at a Centre for Entrereneurship Development for a higher institution in Lagos, Nigeria

But such opportunities were too few and far between.

So I gradually shifted towards serving farm owners more.

With the progress I’ve so far made, I’m now working on learning resources (e.g. my Practical Feed Formulation and Compounding Home Study Video Package ), and events.

Examples: My 4 to 6 hour Feed Formulation workshop, and keynote speeches on Best Practice) for Farm Business Owners groups and associations.

Final Words: Use a Similar Strategy to Succeed as an Expert-Who-Speaks

Form the habit of asking probing questions.

NB: I paraphrased Burt Dubin in that preceding sentence. He recommends getting decision makers to tell you what results they expect to see AFTER you are done (he teaches his students specific questions to use).

Then use careful observation (trust your gut instincts!), to intelligently choose who you invest time and effort in promoting your services to/respond to enquiries from…

…and HOW far you go to do so.

That way, you’re likely to pick the right clients to serve cost-effectively, and efficiently in terms of time and effort.

The best part is, you’ll be sure of not only getting well paid, but also getting great reviews, that you can use to promote yourself to others.

A Society That Does Not Reward Competence Will Develop Poorly

Chimamanda Adichie left Nigeria for the USA at the age of 19. Today, she’s in the news again for winning yet another award as a writer. Isn’t it wonderful that a person from just about anywhere in the world, can go to the USA, and succeed on merit?

Adichie and Lupita Nyong’o are two great examples.

They came in as outsiders, and they’re getting objective appraisals based on merit.

In Nigeria, Is Finding Authentic Success on Merit – Especially as an Outsider – Possible?

Let me share a true story that offers some useful insight…

Back in 1997, the Cameroonian owner of a small French language coaching centre I attended in Benin City, became good friends with me, during the 3 months he tutored me. I attended when off duty from work as a young shift brewer in Guinness.

One day he told me he was attending the election of new executives for the Edo State branch of NAFTA – National French Teachers Association. I think that was the name.

If I recall correctly, the venue was an auditorium in Edo state’s University of Benin, or maybe it was Igbinedion Education Centre. It’s been a while now, so I’m not sure.

Anyway my teacher had a fellow Cameroonian male friend, who I will call “Oyam”, who’d worked some years as a teacher in a secondary school in Benin City.

Oyam had published 2 books (to help French learners) with a local printer. And he also had audio tapes that taught proper pronunciation.

As an adult learner aiming to consolidate my fluency in the language, I had bought one of the school teacher’s books, and found it very practically helpful. This was after attending a 3 month intensive training course in my teacher’s language school (for which I paid N35,000 in total).

Oyam had been very active in the association, and made his ambition to be elected president known to all.

By the end of that day, he lost that election with the lowest number of votes. And the winner was a Nigerian who struggled to speak French and had not produced any works of his own.

My friends were however not surprised.

They had always told me how those of them who chose to work in Nigerian schools often had to change their names and claim to hail from areas like Calabar, and border towns like Ikom (which I passed through on my 1st visit to Cameroon).

In fact, a year before, my teacher had taken me to visit some of his countrymen he’d found working as French teachers, under adopted names, in some schools.

When I asked why they did so, one such Cameroonian teacher explained that he had learned the hard way.

And what he learned was that if he wanted promotion on merit, consistent with his demonstrated competence as a French teacher, he had to hide the fact that he was NOT a Nigerian!

He then explained how he’d been forced to keep moving from school to school, wondering why Nigerian French teachers who often were not half as competent as he was often got put ahead of him. This happened, no matter how long he stayed there, and despite the fact that he often did most of the work.

Simply put, as a foreigner, he found he rarely stood a chance against a Nigeran. In some cases, a fair minded school owner/proprietor would ignore complaints and appoint him. But the others would generally make things difficult by refusing to cooperate with him!

He said he sometimes overheard them saying: “How can someone come from another country, to lead us, while we’re here?”

And that was when he decided to change his name, and claim to be from close to the border area, but that he’d spent some growing up years in Cameroon.

The next job he got with a big school afterwards saw him get appointed Head of department within a few months!

That was where my teacher and I visited him.

How Many Foreign African Nationals Who’ve Lived for Decades In Nigeria Stand Any Chance of Getting Elected Ahead of a Nigerian?

Today we know about Nigerians in the UK and USA who occupy public office.

But have you ever wondered if foreign African nationals who have lived here for decades, can get elected into public office, or positions in private organisations (e.g. clubs, associations, universities etc) on merit?

Do we even have one example in the Nigerian senate today for instance?

Are we to assume that we do not have Africans from other countries, who have made this place home for them and their families, who can be useful in service?

What signals do such people get in relating with us?

Some may have ideas that they believe can benefit us. But our attitudes could make them keep away from offering themselves for service.

I say this above because I’ve met many such people living quietly in Nigeria!

But look at Botswana, South Africa, USA and you’ll see Nigerians who arrive and get appointed right to the top of the hierarchy, based on their demonstrated competence in the universities there.

I know a number of persons who have experienced this.

These countries, especially the USA, had to evolve to become this way, by moving away from extreme racism.

The successes since recorded over there, by Achebe, Soyinka, Adichie, and many other excellent Nigerians prove those countries have done it progressively for decades.

My Question is: Can the Same Be Said For the Nigerian Society?

Does a nobody from another country stand a chance of achieving – based entirely on merit – the highest levels of success and recognition, IN NIGERIA, if s/he is starting from zero?

Indeed, can a complete nobody who is a full blooded Nigerian, born and raised in Nigeria, reasonably aspire to authentic success, based entirely on merit IN NIGERIA, if s/he is starting from ground zero?

Just like we see happening in the USA for our people in Diaspora?

My personal experiences and observations, over the past 12 years, make me fear the answer to all those questions is NO.

That’s Why Nigerians who Win Visa Lotteries to USA Often Rejoice, and Party, and Even Give “Testimony” in Church!

They do that because they are so sure they will get a better chance of being rewarded on merit for their efforts over there!

The truth is that a society that rejects the culture of rewarding merit and competence, will suffer poor socio economic development.

And that is why Nigeria suffers lack of progress today, even compared to many smaller and less endowed nations.

It affects virtually every area of our lives – including the schools our kids attend.

One example: Parents pay teachers to ensure their kids score ahead of all others. It’s so rampant today.

This ensures the best students who study hard, and whose parents do not try to influence the process, end up losing out!

And we see the results in school leavers who demonstrate poor evidence to back up the credentials they carry around!

And that’s why many gifted and highly competent Nigerians rarely stay in the country. Most find ways to go where they will be allowed to flourish.

If things are to change, we have to start from the basics…from the home, beginning with ourselves, our family members, and then from there into larger society.

Unless we do that, mediocres will continue to dominate in the Nigerian society!

Final Words: We Have to Make The Right Choices In the Best Interests of Our Country!

One night in late 2012, I attended an event organized by Adichie’s NGO (through which she provides writing training courses to young writers from across Africa), in conjunction with Farafina, an indigenous publishing house (see Kachifo.com).

One night in late 2002, I attended an event organized by Adichie's NGO (through which she provides writing training courses to young writers from across Africa), in conjunction with Farafina, an indigenous publishing house (see Kachifo.com) - Picture of the cover of a brochure I picked up at the event

The event was held at Lagoon Restaurant, on Victoria Island in Lagos, Nigeria. And it had many notable writers and poets in attendance, including Adichie herself, of course.

It was sponsored by Nigerian Breweries, and I recall Timaya was the artiste invited to perform.

There were books by many up and coming as well as established writers on display, for sale. What I learned that day, from observing proceedings (including presentations to writers who’d completed their training), told me Adichie is keen to help us rise to the international standards that will benefit us a people, by re-discovering our passion for African story telling.

But I cannot help wondering whether the larger Nigerian society will embrace this obvious need to change…

Yet, we need to, so that our new generation of writers, for instance, can get due reward and recognition right from their own society.

If we do not, they will be forced to seek what is due to them abroad, like so many others have done in the past.

And our nation will continue to suffer the negative effects of that trend.

The choice is ours to make!
