PII 156: You Need to Tell Stories to Achieve Superior Business Marketing Success

Indeed some of the most successful sales people in the world have been referred to as MASTER STORYTELLERS – and with good reason: they tell stories that make people buy!

In the rest of this piece, I explain how you can use storytelling to achieve your own repeat selling success.

At the risk of sounding like I am bragging, I happen to be gifted in using storytelling to sell. And it has played a big part in the success I have achieved at various levels in selling my products and services internationally.

I have NEVER read ANY of the articles that came up on that Search Engine Results Page (SERP) when I did the search (see some below this article).

But I have known THE truth about storytelling being a key ingredient for selling, from my early startup years, back in 2002 through 2005 reading widely about the careers of many different successful entrepreneurs (This was when I started article marketing from my first website – spontaneousdevelopmentdotcom)

Over time, I intuitively adopted storytelling as a selling strategy, when – while struggling with serious cash flow limitations – I discovered that prospects tended to buy in more readily to offers I made when they read (or heard me narrate) one of many true stories about how I used my solution to solve problems for others like them.

Today, many years after I adopted that approach, I have gone on to publish hundreds of articles based on real life sales experiences I have had – AND they have boosted my sales leads generation efforts again and again!

Sometimes I even share transcripts from actual sales conversations, on phone, email, WhatsApp etc.

An example is the true story published in last week’s issue of this newsletter about an international sale I made, of one of my Excel-VB Software products.

It is this approach that influences those who encounter my web marketing (which is primarily done based Article Marketing where I share those stories) to make contact with me.

And like I have said in past articles on this theme, the stories I tell are often so compelling in their authenticity, that prospects who read them, often go out of their way, to connect with me.

For instance, there have been some who filled and submitted a request for my products via my website contact form, but got no response from me (due to problems with email delivery from the script to my inbox).

So they came back and resubmitted the form, after which some came over to contact me via Facebook, Facebook, even Twitter.

[Interesting Fact: Looking back now, I just realized that the only Social Media platform I use, but have NEVER had a prospective buyer reach out to me from is LinkedIn.com.]

In essence I am saying, when you use storytelling the right way, especially through articles you publish and propagate via your Web Marketing System, potential buyers, who fit your target audience profile are more likely to become HIGHLY MOTIVATED to buy from you.

They will gladly go the extra mile to do what I needed to get money to you, in exchange for what you sell, which they want.

Isn’t that what we are all in business hoping will happen – repeatedly – for us?

Of course it is. But DOING IT takes work!

For one thing, you must use TRUE STORIES. No lies. No fairy tales. No false claims. Nothing phony.

You have to be 100% authentic – a good way being NOT leaving out stories about those times when you actually failed FLAT on your face. Don’t try to use your storytelling to paint yourself as being a perfect person. People want to connect with a human being!

Again – remember that lies or half-truths about your achievements will only create unexpected complications for you later.

Be upfront, honest and straightforward in sharing what you know and where you’ve been with your target audience, in a manner that demonstrates you have gained real world relevant competence that THEY can benefit from.

That is what SMART storytelling will do for you!

The above web contact form submission is just one of many hundreds, I have received for well over a decade, since I began using the web. And especially since 2013, when I focused my efforts on generating sales leads for solutions I offer primarily from the Internet.

That enquiry was sent in on the 13th of January. However, I did NOT see/respond to it, until the 1st of February (last week). In other words, it took me over 2 weeks to get back to him.

Definitely not an ideal way to handle sales enquiries, and for those who know me, it is very out of character. However, I had no way of knowing he had made the enquiry, because his was one of those affected by the yet-unexplained disabling of email delivery from the script handling web contact forms on tayosolagbade.com

I mentioned in a previous newsletter that this has been happening for about 4 months now, making me unaware of over 30 enquiries sent to me using my web contact forms. Only an accidental incident led to my discovery of the submissions.

I have since begun implementing the alternative system I’ve thought up, to ensure I no longer have to worry about missing enquiries like this one.

But I mention this particular gentleman’s enquiry because it shows how a smart Web Marketing System (WMS) can motivate the prospect to:

  1. actively pursue you – sometimes using multiple alternative channels for answers about how s/he can buy from you
  2. patiently wait, to get response from you about what to do and how
  3. diligently go the extra mile to make the payment using whatever options you recommend.

Let me warn here that the intention is not to present the prospective buyer as one who is begging the seller for access to the latter’s solution.

Far from it.

Indeed the exact opposite is the case, and THAT is why the prospective buyer is often willing and able to act along the lines mentioned in a, b and c above.

In other words, a Web Marketing System makes those who fit your target audience profile SEE that you offer what they consider not only a valid solution to a need they have, but also that gaining access to you and your solution would obviously be in their best interests, because it would be apparent to them that YOU are an authentically passionate solution provider who delivers what s/he promises.

All of this can be inferred from a well developed and implemented Web Marketing System, without your saying a single word to a prospective buyer of ANY solution you offer.

An even better example of how a WMS can motivate prospects, can be seen in the case of the Malawi based Farm CEO who first emailed me on 23rd September 2018 but had to persist in exploring ways to send me payment – right up till 8th February 2019 (well over 4 months) last week!

Like many others before them, the Farm CEOs whose enquiries and conversations with me are reproduced above have experienced what it feels like, to be on the receiving end of my Web Marketing efforts.

It should be noted that the UK based Nigerian tried reaching me on phone, without success and that was why he settled for sending a web form enquiry.

Imagine therefore, if I had failed to provide a web contact form on my website?

Some people make that mistake. Others have the web contact form on their site, but it does not work.

I have used web forms for years and never let any of mine exist without functioning as they should. This new experience I’m having with non delivery of submissions to my email is one that I have studied and adopted an alternative solution to, so as to ensure I stop having delays in seeing messages sent to me.

The point I’m making therefore is that the foundation for a successful Web Marketing System is a fully functional response generating website.

Without it, you will most likely be pouring water you fetch, into a basket – to paraphrase a Yoruba saying which implies WASTING your efforts,

Having said all of the above, I now offer you the key message I want to pass on in this issue of my newsletter, which is that I have not been doing anything resembling the volume of writing I did from April 2013 to mid 2018, in a long while now.

Back then I wrote at least ONE new article daily, to promote various aspects of my multidisciplinary range of solutions. This was a well established routine that earned me great search engine visibility, generating leads/enquiries that I converted to sales.

Yet, despite the fact that I have not been doing as much active writing for marketing purposes online, as before, I have notched that enquiries have continued to come in for various solutions I offer.

If you have been following my writing over the years, you will have noticed that I share LOTS of true stories about sales conversations, and client support experiences I have quite often.

The reason I do that is to SHOW to my readers that far from being on an ego trip, with regard to what I offer online via www.tayosolagbade.com and other platforms I use, I am actually engaged in high profile money making interactions that add value to the lives of those I engage with.

This is why majority of those I relate with, both on and off the web, take me seriously. They SEE that I am the REAL DEAL, That I offer solutions that work, which I regularly, provide useful information and education about, to help them make up their minds.

Indeed, some of them found me because some other person who knew about me, but had up till then never needed to buy from me, recommended that they do so. Did you get that?

A person who has only heard of you, or followed you online, but neither met with you in the flesh or hired you him/herself,  recommends you so strongly to another person seeking a solution you offer, that the latter decides to buy from you…sometimes to the tune of over N50k!

It takes a rare kind of marketing effectiveness to get that sort of response from totals strangers. This is why I so boldly proclaim to any who will listen that a Web Marketing System, used the way I recommend is the ultimate, most cost effective and efficient marketing tool ANYONE can hope to have access to.

To succeed in selling ANYTHING, you must develop the discipline to smartly convert sales leads to money you want. In this second bonus commandment, I share another true story to illustrate how to use a WMS to achieve selling success.

Like I said in my 10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success, the WMS designed and implemented the way I recommend, will often attract “Motivated Buyers”, to contact you about what you sell. At that point, it will then be up to you to do what is needed to close the sale,

That’s exactly what I did with this Farm CEO, who has now become the newest member of my Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas club.

The screenshots below tell the story about how I led him to the final point, by empathizing with him.

 

This is where Psychology comes to play in selling. Your selling instincts need to be finely honed to accurately assess the psychological state of prospects and clients, when they come to you.

For instance, in the case of this Farm CEO, I immediately saw that he had conviction that my software could help him. This was why he still returned to ask for it, despite having only just suffered considerable material loss.

He was yet to buy a new smartphone and only had a small N3k phone he’d picked up after he got robbed. It lacking browsing capabilities and so he was not yet able to do mobile money transfers.

The truth was however that his priorities could change at any point in time. Apart from the need to replace the stolen items, other pressing money demanding tasks or events could force him to DELAY his plans to spend money on such a solution. A good example is if a medical emergency suddenly came up in his home.

The above considerations – and the fact that I’d also been robbed of similar devices less than a year ago – prompted me to send him a revised version of the promo offer he’d come back to enquire about. And I added zero cost bonuses as a gesture of goodwill, as my own small way of empathizing even more, with him.

But it was slightly higher priced – because, like I have told others who came to me (and as I stated in the 10 Commandments Series), I strive to make my offers with integrity.

I do this (making offers with integrity) by ensuring they are reasonably unique in terms of pricing, bonuses and other features. That way, the buyers knows that s/he is getting what is promised, and which differs from what came before, or what will come afterwards.

 

After I sent out the offer, it occurred to me that he might not see the email early enough, since he did not have ready access to Internet connection. To be fair to him, so as to give him the best opportunity to take it up, I called him up, and was not surprised to learn he had yet to check his email.

[TIP: Do you see how acting with due diligence can help you avoid losing useful selling opportunities? My advice: Don’t be too laid back and depend exclusively on indirect methods of communication like email, messenger etc. Sometimes it makes more sense to simply pick up your phone and CALL THE PROSPECTIVE BUYER so as to tell him/her about the juicy offer you’ve cooked up!]

So I read the email offer out to him on phone and asked if he wanted to take it up. He said he did, and wasted no time in asking me to text him my account details.

But he noted that he would only be able to make the payment on Monday (we were speaking on Saturday p.m). This was because he had no means to make payments from his phone or via online banking.

For my time limited promo offer, this would not work – and I told him so. You see, the buyer ALWAYS has to make a commitment to tie down the offer as given.

Otherwise it would be revised upwards in price, and possibly the accompanying bonuses modified.

I made this clear to him, and suggested he talk to a trusted other (friend, colleague, relative or partner) to send in the payment on his behalf.

He initially said he could not immediately think of anyone. I replied that other buyers had often said the same, but after doing a little checking, were able to find someone to help.

NB: As long as they can trust you to refund the money to them, people who know you well will often accept to help you send payment to a 3rd party, if you ask them the right way. I know this because I have done it countless times – several of those involving having clients who have NEVER met with me, helping to send funds to 3rd parties they’d never met, on my behalf!

At this point he agreed to explore the alternative payment option I’d suggested, in order to take up the attractive multi bonus offer I made to him, before the deadline.

Sure enough, he got a friend to help make the payment – she did so twice

[TIP: To make things easy for him to convince the helper, I told him he could make the payment in 2 installments. That way, the person would not worry that the sum was large. By Monday, he would be able to get cash to the helper and she could then pay the balance. And that was how it went].

I am NOW preparing the products he ordered, by personalizing him using his name, business name and contact/other details he’s sent to me.

Those of you familiar with my work, most likely recall I ALWAYS personalize my products for each buyer. This is so as to better protect their investment in solutions I deliver to them.

I have shared this true story to illustrate the importance of taking timely action to close sales leads:

Act Decisively. Avoid  Hesitating or Procrastinating.

To paraphrase a common saying “Delay can be dangerous”.

You see, people often have a variety of expense channels competing for the money in their hands, pockets and accounts.

Make up your mind what profit margin to aim for with each product or service, BEFORE you start generating sales leads.

That way, when they eventually come to buy (and they will, if you use your WMS like I recommend), you will be ready to make IRRESISTIBLE offers that motivate them to make payment before they consider any other things they wish to spend their money on.

Fail to act as recommended above, and you could see potential sales fizzle out right before your eyes. THAT, is not something you want to happen, if you seek authentic selling success!

PII 151[TRUE STORY]: Use Relentless Web Marketing to Achieve Selling Success Inspite of Adversity – Bonus Commandment No. 1

Everything I share in this 10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success series is experience based wisdom – insights from the University of Hard Knocks (UHK) aka LIFE – and NOT textbook theory.

Far from being something I picked up from ANY textbook or classroom, it’s something I conceived by applying myself diligently to thinking about and intelligently, analyzing failures and successes I experienced over years of marketing my multidisciplinary range of products and services.

Then I distilled those experiences into a system that I could put to use practically, to solve the problem of finding prospects or potential clients/customers and making them buyers.

Let me begin by stating an important fact you need to keep in mind, if you want to succeed in winning profitable paying clients using MY Web Marketing System.

You may be doing your marketing, but it may not immediately give you the kind of results you want.

Then again, even when it is giving you the results you want, it may not continue to do so indefinitely, Typically, you may get to a point when it suddenly stops doing so as well as it used to, or even stops doing so completely – for a time.

As you can imagine, this would feel like a total disaster happening in your business life and you would wonder to yourself saying “I thought I had this all worked out before?”

The truth is sometimes the lessons we need to learn are not given to us at once.

Sometimes we need to learn in phases. Success happens in levels or to put it differently, there are different levels of success.

You may be at a certain level of success, and assume you’re home free or made, when in reality there are still other lessons you need to learn. By the time those lessons become necessary; some people wrongly assume that it’s something entirely negative.

The wrong mental attitude they’ve adopted makes them think they’re subfreezing needlessly.

But the truth is that such an experience will often be an opportunity for growth.

It will equip you to deal with adversity mentally.

So your success in marketing is unlikely to simply be continuous and uninterrupted. Nothing in life is ever that way.

What is more likely to happen is that you will experience what are called PEAKS and TROUGHS in your marketing.

The PEAKS are the periods when you rise high and you achieve and things are going well.

But there will always be TROUGHS in the life of an entrepreneur. Those are the down times you have. But those down times usually will come because there is something you don’t yet know, that you need to know to add to the body of knowledge, skills and abilities you have.

So you need to maintain a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) during those periods when things are slow, when things are not looking good, because those are the periods when the lessons are there to be harvested.

It is very important to have the right mindset towards your marketing, so that you can make the most of the experiences you are going to have, because nothing is ever going to happen in a straight line.

In life, you cannot avoid adversity. Instead it is how you respond to adversity that determines how you succeed in the long run.

So, you need to make adversity your friend. Embrace it. Jim Rohn said “Adversity forces the human spirit to grow”.

I agree.

I’m a product of adversity – and every day I remain a student of adversity, learning continually.

It’s NOT easy, and it can be very psychologically an emotionally challenging, BUT I have found that I always emerge wiser and stronger afterwards – and that makes it worthwhile!

Now, here’s why I had to give the above admonition as a preamble…

It’s because if you do not have mental attitude described above, it will be near impossible for you to achieve the kind of authentic success I will now go on to describe, based on a recent true story, about the use of my Web Marketing System (WMS) to attract and win over buyers.

Late last year – specifically, on the 27th Nov. 2018 (2 months ago today) – I got an email from a Cameroonian gentleman based in Ghana, regarding my Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager Pre-Built Custom Automated Workbook software Application.

As he stated in the email screenshot below, he was looking to purchase the app in preparation for a Poultry Layer Farm Business Start-up in Ghana.

Now, he’d gotten my email address (tayo at tksola dot com) from the demonstration video I’d published in my YouTube channel, announcing the PFM app to potential buyers searching for solutions of that kind.

Members of my Web Marketing for CEOs club will recall I’ve mentioned several times, the need to create promotional materials that include what is called a Call To Action – CTA.

There MUST be a purpose to your marketing. Your CTA will be used to effect that purpose.

Be it videos, audios or written materials/resources, you must ensure your message ends with a specific request, offer or invitation to the target audience that comes into contact with it. Something they have to do that will draw them into your sales process – resulting in a “Sales Lead”.

In my videos, I usually recommend at the end that the viewer interested in knowing more send me an email via tayo at tksola dot com or that s/he call me on either +234-803-302-1263 (in Nigeria) or +229-66-122-136 (in Benin Republic).

This was what led the Farm CEO to send me the email he did.

In response, I told him to call me on my Nigeria line, so I could ask him a few questions (see email screenshot below).

I make this request as a strategy to screen out potential time wasters.

Put in place a screening system to help you make effective use of your time.

My experiences have taught me that some people (especially out here) can be mischievous. Some people may just call to chat you up for the sake of it, just to see what you will say.

I used to call people at my own expense in the past. But after I discovered that a growing number of those I was having to respond to were just curious, I realized I needed to modify my strategy.

Then in Nigeria, there are people who habitually engage in the silly practice of flashing – they call your line, let it right briefly, then end the call, so that YOU feel drawn to call back.

I used to do such call backs, but soon learned it was not worth my while. So I stopped and focused on identifying serious prospects by requesting they call me.

Since 2013, I’ve had enquirers call me, as a prerequisite for getting a response from me. I estimate that I close over 70% of sales opportunities that come to me through this process.

It actually makes them see that I take myself seriously, and that boosts my credibility + makes them come to me believing I can really help them.

My argument is this:

The products I sell are not very expensive, but they are not dirt cheap either. If you’re unwilling to spend the little amount that would enable you speak with me for 1 to 3 minutes on phone, I don’t see any reason why I should believe you are a serious potential buyer for my products that cost MANY times more!

Back to the Ghana based prospect:

When he got my email asking him to call me, he replied that he would and did so about a day later.

I still recall that I was visiting my parents in their home when the call came in. Less than 5 minutes later, we were done. He’d given me the answers to my questions and had asked me how much the app cost.

In responding, I offered to make him a time limited discount offer.

He however declined, noting that he was still looking around, trying to make up his mind, and that he could not make any concrete buying decision until January 2019.

I encouraged him to take his time and we ended the call.

By this time, in line with my recommended best practice for Web Marketing, I had 2 important items of information from him, which equipped me to safely and cost-effectively follow up with him:

a. His Mobile Number:

This I plugged into my Phone Contacts and used to find him on WhatsApp

b. His Email Address:

This I added to my General Contacts who I periodically forward copies of my published newsletter

As you can see, there is a method to my Web Marketing “madness” :-)

My approach helped me check and confirm reasonably, that the prospect was to be taken seriously. Then I stored the 2 key contact details I would need to take him/her to the next level in MY sales process, and proceeded to WAIT for ideas to come to me.

As the year approached its end, I sent out newsletter broadcasts via WhatsApp and email.

One carried the download link to an Excel-VB Greeting Card Workbook that I’d adapted from a source version downloaded from the web.

I’d embellished the workbook with code that got it to do more, plus a floating form featuring my photo, logo and clickable command buttons – including one that opened an offer page for discounted signup for membership of my MS Excel Heaven VB Programming Club.

Just before the year ended, I sent all my past enquirers a GIFT PDF copy of the 4,000 word Case Study I got paid 2,500 Euros to write, by a European Union Funded NGO based in Holland. There was also an offer of a special MP3 audio podcast series.

All of these were sent out using a clear no-strings-attached approach.

Recepients knew they were not being pressured to respond to anything, even as they took ownership of the FREE gif

[TIP] It is instructive to note, at this point, that I kept sending out my broadcasts, regardless of whether or not I got any responses. This is critical to successful selling. Marketing is the life blood of any business and it MUST happen continously, for the best chances of sales leads generation to be had.

I did some thinking, early in the New Year, and decided to send out a special FLASH PROMO offer of my Feed Formulation Bundle at 50% off with a deadline that expired midnight of the same day.

Why?

Because I knew most of those on my mailing list were Farm CEOs, or those aspiring, who had yet to purchase my Feed Formulation products.

Sometimes people tend to be ready at different times, to take up specific kinds of offers. Timing matters, in making offers.

When I sent out my offer, I got some responses – and was NOT surprised.

One of them was from the gentleman in Ghana…

Another Selling Opportunity Opened Up…

In an interesting turn of events (which I’d actually thought could occur) he came back – see screenshot below – while still expecting his payment to reach me, to ask about the PFM app which he had originally reached out to me for!

You see, I’d offered him a different product (Ration Formulator software etc), which has a lower price tag, at a discount, to get my foot in the door, with the intention to them up sell the actual product he’d indicated interest t in to him.

Not surprisingly, he asked about THAT other product – the PFM – on his own.

This request from him gave me legitimate reason to then make him another offer, this time for the PFM.

Do you see now, why it always pays to keep an open and flexible mindset when marketing?

Never be too rigid in presenting your offers. Learn to watch the prospective buyer’s “body language” when you communicate with him/her. You can do this even when you are NOT physically with them. How they respond when you speak on phone, or even what they say in email replies or WhatsApp/Messenger chats can give you insights into how to get them to buy!

I’ve honed my selling instincts and skills in this regard for years and it has helped me get total strangers convinced enough to send me money from in and out of Africa, without EVER meeting me in person.

So this system I use, and recommend to you, works – if you know how to use it.

The first step is for you to ensure you have a solution that your target audience wants and which they will consider worthwhile AFTER you deliver it to them.

This latter point (making sure they are HAPPY they bought from you) is critical to your building long term relationships with buyers: It which will guarantee opportunities for REPEAT sales to them in the long term.

“I literally dream about shoes, all the time.

I live, sleep, eat, drink fashion.

It’s not something I separate. I’m like always designing.

Historically, both in ready to wear and in shoes and accessories, it has been men.

I’m kind of the new garde, which is “wait minute, why shouldn’t a woman know what a woman wants when it comes to footwear?”

I’m always telling young designers, who are very creative coming out of art schools:

“You’ve got to learn the business. In the world we live today, you can’t just sit in the corner and draw shoes, for example. You have to know how to market the shoes. You have to know how to sell the shoes. You have to know how to cost the shoes. You know…you don’t design into a vacuum.

To be an entrepreneur, you don’t have to be like myself – the LEAD entrepreneur.

You know, the people who work for me, they all have to be entrepreneurs. So it’s really a way of thinking. It’s an empowering way of thinking. It’s an accountability. It’s you can make a difference. It’s going to your job and not just thinking that you’re a cog in the wheel. It’s thinking like you could affect the wheel. You can innovate the wheel. You can make it a better wheel. That kind of thinking is so important for any type of job, any type of career – and especially design.

I think having my entrepreneurship background gave me that confidence that I could go out on a limb and innovate. “

PII 148: Commandment No. 10 – You Shall Constantly Equip Yourself to Tackle Negative Competition [10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success]

In this tenth and final commandment, I explain using several personal true stories and examples, how negativity from others – both those close to you, as well as people you may not even know or be consciously aware of – can cause potentially serious damage to you, in a way that could stop you from achieving the valued goal you set.

Dispense with any rose colored glasses through which you may be tempted to view the world. Some people, including those you love, may choose to make things difficult for you, as they observe your progress.

What you need to do is PREPARE yourself for that possible eventuality. Otherwise you could just end up getting derailed from achieving your dream.

PII 148: Commandment No. 10 – You Shall Constantly Equip Yourself to Tackle Negative Competition [10 Commandments of Web Marketing for Business Success]

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to eliminate all the negative people from your life. Your mother or father, a business associate, a best friend or even your spouse might be a negative influence. And since any of these people have known you for years, they probably think of you in terms of your past experiences and not in terms of who you are today, or the person you can become.

The saying “A prophet has no honor in his own home” couldn’t be truer, Sometimes it’s easier to find support from a complete stranger. A stranger doesn’t carry preconceived notions about what you can or cannot do…everyone needs someone to believe in him or her, and those who are closest to you may not be the best people to fill that role.

The key is to find someone who does…Negativity works like poison in the bloodstream: If you give in to its power, it will weaken your confidence and kill your dream. EXPERT WHO SPEAKS: Know Your Worth. Resolve to Get It

As an authentic entrepreneur, I have paid my dues for well over a decade LEARNING the theory and practice of the various solutions I provider.

a. I can prepare feasibility study packs for intending start-ups or prospective retirees. And I will offer to help them work through it to implementation.

b. My talk can be prepared to highlight key factors that can prevent start-ups from succeeding in their local environment. I will actually investigate their real life socio-economic environment, to verify what’s worked.

c. I can Setup an Entrepreneur Support Network for Start-Ups for attendees. This goes beyond the learning event proper. I am convinced it’s a crucially important requirement.

I can Setup a coaching support network for attendees who (after attending my speaking event) decide to start their own enterprises. I ALWAYS have an emotional investment in my attendees, hence this opportunity is offered a zero cost.

I strongly believe entrepreneurship learning events MUST offer attendees an opportunity to get long term support and coaching, from competent experts. The journey to success is rarely a short one.
