Below, I share excerpts from a page in my 4,000 word International Agribusiness Case Study paper, titled  “Adoption of PC-Based Feed Formulation Methods by Farmers, Feed Manufacturers and Extension Professionals, in South West Nigeria.”

1). For having calculated by hand for hours to calibrate protein% in recipes, using your spec sheet is a CHARM! and a BIG time saver.

4). Congratulations! for what you have done. I had found [commercial software name]. It looks to be a very powerful software, but $1250US – 196873.87NGN. The customizability of your software makes it more ambivalent to different situations and countries.” – Ron(ald) Vaughan*, Sun, 25 Nov 2012 13:31:11 -0500>

For ration formulation to succeed, derived rations must be cost-effective, and also yield the desired livestock performance.

Customizable Excel-VB solutions, featuring intelligent errorhandling and intuitive “novice-proof” graphic user interfaces can give such superior benefits.

Extension specialists can learn basic Excel-Visual Basic programming, and collaborate with farmers to develop software to achieve the above.

The Excel-VB Driven Ration1 Formulator™ (see Annex 1.0) was developed in 2004 , and regularly updated since then, for farmers with limited budgets, and a need to freely explore locally alternative ingredients.

It is accompanied by a 70 page feed formulation hand book (published in 2002), which explains the improved Pearson Square feed formulation technique on which the application works.

The application has been used mostly for poultry and fish farming feed formulation.

Thirty (30) livestock farmers (private owners), including some from outside Nigeria, have so far bought it.

One buyer, who has been especially forthcoming with useful feedback and suggestions, is Ronald Vaughan .

Another version, which does elaborate amino acid balancing (suited to pig farmers’ needs), in addition to Least Cost Formulation, is currently being tested.

“Last week, we got together to determin(e) what were the seeds we would need to get for this summer. It was a question of minutes. All we had to do was look up the chart of consumation versus storafe. This was the result of all last summer’s work. Attached is the excel sheet we build so as to keep track of the amount of gran we use per year according to different feed recipes…My point is: we were able to get so far thanks to your app. It came in so handy.” – Ronald Vaughan*, Wed, January 23, 2013 10:33 p.m

*Ronald Vaughan is a project manager in a large farm settlement owned by an organization with branches in many parts of the world (not yet in Nigeria). He’d purchased the Excel-VB Ration Formulator featured in this study, back in December 2012, and put it to extensive use – giving feedback on prpgress made. Many Nigerian farm owners also gave similar feedback (mostly on phone), but Ronald’s detailed narratives provide useful insights we felt should be shared.

PII 160: Sometimes You Need to Take a Massive Leap of Faith to Achieve Rewarding Benefits

In this issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, I share a true story to illustrate how being willing to take intelligent risks can help you get what you want in life.

The most recent message was sent this morning (24/4/19) with regard to his work anniversary.

In 2015, he purchased my Feed Formulation Handbook and Excel-VB Ration Formulator, by sending payment via Western Union Money Transfer directly into my bank account in Lagos, Nigeria.

Here’s the best part:

When he called me for the first time, after watching the demonstration video of my software, I was in Nigeria, so he’d used my Nigeria mobile number.

By the time he sent his payment , however, I was already back in Benin Republic’s Cotonou.
I still recall having to log on to the web from a cafe I use in the Etoile Rouge area, to confirm his payment had dropped via the Western Union link provided by my bank, into my Naira account.

About a year later, I was in a hotel room in Cotonou, when I got an E-mail from him asking that I send him the password to login to the Ration Formulator.

Due to a busy schedule at the time, I could not get back to him immediately. But I did eventually send it to him about 3 days later – and he acknowledged receipt.

My point?

I DELIVER what I promise – and that helps me to build LONG terms relationships with clients, that often turn into valuable friendships.

But and this is a BIG BUT, it often has to start with the prospective client being willing to take that MASSIVE LEAP OF FAITH to believe that I can be TRUSTED to help him/her achieve that valued goal s/he aims for.

Not everyone has the capacity to do that.

And that’s what separates CHAMPIONS from everyday people.

NB: This client’s name and country have been deliberately hidden to protect his privacy.
The prospective client I told him about IS from the same country – which was why it occurred to me to share the story with him.

PII 158: How My Farm Business Support Center Can Help Farm Owners Achieve Superior Results at Low to Zero Cost [3 Common Challenges It Will Address]

Regular readers of this blog most likely know that I have set my sights on having a PHYSICAL location for what I call my Farm Business Support Centre (click here read a 2015 introductory article, complete with a tentative layout plan).

The FBSC’s purpose is to continuously investigate, document and publish Best Practice (I call it BOPMS) ways of rearing livestock (especially poultry, fish, and rabbits) and growing crops, as well as marketing BOTH crops and livestock, for higher yields and profits, using locally sourced materials and indigenous knowledge/skills.

I have been supporting Farm Businesses with custom software, extension advisory services and web marketing support for many years now, and enjoy great relationships with many of my clients.

Specifically, I provide information and education/coaching via articles, videos, audios, books etc – some of which have made clients openly send me unsolicited testimonials.

I believe one of the reasons for my growing success with clients, is that I am gifted with the ability to SEE beyond the core activity the client focuses on, to help him/her understand the bigger picture of what s/he needs to do to boost productivity and profits – and also to deal with adversity.

A good example can be seen in the ideas I offer in the article titled “Why Farm CEOs Need Multiple Streams of Income“.

Here is a statement of FACT:

I have established myself as a reliable provider (working 100% remotely via the web) of a unique range of custom Excel-Visual Basic driven software that business owners within and outside Africa buy from me.

This achievement did NOT come easy. And it certainly did not happen quickly. Indeed I suffered prolonged periods of total marketplace irrelevance and rejection, locally, during which time I was completely reduced to BEGGING friends and relatives for money to meet my most basic expenses and needs – especially to care for my family.It was THAT bad.

But I persisted. I had no choice. There was no other way. I had left myself no escape or alternative option, having burned virtually all my bridges, by following the recommendations in Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”.

I had to begin by literally creating the market for my custom Excel-VB Software Development Service and Products in my country of residence Nigeria. It took quite some doing, but when you have no alternatives, you learn to THINK CREATIVELY to find ways to achieve your goal.

I did that, and began creating demo applications for target niche markets I identified – Small and Medium businesses in the Healthcare industry – hospitals, clinic etc.

One day, a Web marketing client saw one of my demos and though he was NOT a medical professional, and was instead an Environmental Consultant, he saw the potential application to suit his own needs.

After some discussions, he paid me the N100k I requested 100% in advance, to have me build an MS Excel-VB driven dynamic menu driven database version of the Environmental Guidelines and Specifications for the Petroleum Industry in Nigeria (EGASPIN).

This was a digital version of a massive 2 volume bound print manual, used as a reference by professional in his industry.

From then on I’d tasted blood, and began to think even bigger.

What people see today, in form of the range of custom applications I now offer ready for use, is the direct result of what I have learned from over a decade of trying to find the best way to make people take my custom Excel-VB solutions seriously.

Some Excel-VB developers from other countries befriend me AFTER seeing videos of some of my advanced applications in my YouTube channel. And I have gotten unsolicited testimonials and referrals from various quarters.

Several years ago, following references made to my work, by a Nigerian born Professor of Agriculture based in South Africa, I was invited to submit a proposal, and eventually got paid 2,500 (Two thousand five hundred) Euros by a European Union funded NGO, to write an international Agribusiness case study paper about how farm CEOs use my Ration Formulator.

This is mainly because I have NEW ideas based on enquiries from prospects and clients that could be added. www.discovercotonou.com is one such idea.It is meant to be a vehicle for attracting farm CEOs and those aspiring, as well as others, to travel down and learn new ideas about agribusiness under a special travel and tour service I would facilitate via my FBSC – where paid accommodation would be made available for travelers e.g. short stays etc.

This article is meant to give the reader an idea of the bigger picture I see, with regard to the work I do as a Best Practice Farm Business Management Support Service Provider.

It is my intention to – over time – attract like-minded others to support me in accessing the needed resources to implement this next growth phase of my plans, especially as it relates to setting up the proposed Farm Business Support Centre physical premises.

PII 156: You Need to Tell Stories to Achieve Superior Business Marketing Success

“Do you need to be a good storyteller to be a successful sales person?”

The results you get confirm the accuracy of the claim made in the title of this latest issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, which says:

“You Need to Tell Stories to Achieve Superior Business Marketing Success”

Indeed some of the most successful sales people in the world have been referred to as MASTER STORYTELLERS – and with good reason: they tell stories that make people buy!

In the rest of this piece, I explain how you can use storytelling to achieve your own repeat selling success.

At the risk of sounding like I am bragging, I happen to be gifted in using storytelling to sell. And it has played a big part in the success I have achieved at various levels in selling my products and services internationally.

I have NEVER read ANY of the articles that came up on that Search Engine Results Page (SERP) when I did the search (see some below this article).

But I have known THE truth about storytelling being a key ingredient for selling, from my early startup years, back in 2002 through 2005 reading widely about the careers of many different successful entrepreneurs (This was when I started article marketing from my first website – spontaneousdevelopmentdotcom)

Over time, I intuitively adopted storytelling as a selling strategy, when – while struggling with serious cash flow limitations – I discovered that prospects tended to buy in more readily to offers I made when they read (or heard me narrate) one of many true stories about how I used my solution to solve problems for others like them.

Today, many years after I adopted that approach, I have gone on to publish hundreds of articles based on real life sales experiences I have had – AND they have boosted my sales leads generation efforts again and again!

Sometimes I even share transcripts from actual sales conversations, on phone, email, WhatsApp etc.

An example is the true story published in last week’s issue of this newsletter about an international sale I made, of one of my Excel-VB Software products.

It is this approach that influences those who encounter my web marketing (which is primarily done based Article Marketing where I share those stories) to make contact with me.

And like I have said in past articles on this theme, the stories I tell are often so compelling in their authenticity, that prospects who read them, often go out of their way, to connect with me.

For instance, there have been some who filled and submitted a request for my products via my website contact form, but got no response from me (due to problems with email delivery from the script to my inbox).

So they came back and resubmitted the form, after which some came over to contact me via Facebook, Facebook, even Twitter.

[Interesting Fact: Looking back now, I just realized that the only Social Media platform I use, but have NEVER had a prospective buyer reach out to me from is LinkedIn.com.]

In essence I am saying, when you use storytelling the right way, especially through articles you publish and propagate via your Web Marketing System, potential buyers, who fit your target audience profile are more likely to become HIGHLY MOTIVATED to buy from you.

They will gladly go the extra mile to do what I needed to get money to you, in exchange for what you sell, which they want.

Isn’t that what we are all in business hoping will happen – repeatedly – for us?

Of course it is. But DOING IT takes work!

For one thing, you must use TRUE STORIES. No lies. No fairy tales. No false claims. Nothing phony.

You have to be 100% authentic – a good way being NOT leaving out stories about those times when you actually failed FLAT on your face. Don’t try to use your storytelling to paint yourself as being a perfect person. People want to connect with a human being!

Again – remember that lies or half-truths about your achievements will only create unexpected complications for you later.

Be upfront, honest and straightforward in sharing what you know and where you’ve been with your target audience, in a manner that demonstrates you have gained real world relevant competence that THEY can benefit from.

That is what SMART storytelling will do for you!

“I literally dream about shoes, all the time.

I live, sleep, eat, drink fashion.

It’s not something I separate. I’m like always designing.

Historically, both in ready to wear and in shoes and accessories, it has been men.

I’m kind of the new garde, which is “wait minute, why shouldn’t a woman know what a woman wants when it comes to footwear?”

I’m always telling young designers, who are very creative coming out of art schools:

“You’ve got to learn the business. In the world we live today, you can’t just sit in the corner and draw shoes, for example. You have to know how to market the shoes. You have to know how to sell the shoes. You have to know how to cost the shoes. You know…you don’t design into a vacuum.

To be an entrepreneur, you don’t have to be like myself – the LEAD entrepreneur.

You know, the people who work for me, they all have to be entrepreneurs. So it’s really a way of thinking. It’s an empowering way of thinking. It’s an accountability. It’s you can make a difference. It’s going to your job and not just thinking that you’re a cog in the wheel. It’s thinking like you could affect the wheel. You can innovate the wheel. You can make it a better wheel. That kind of thinking is so important for any type of job, any type of career – and especially design.

I think having my entrepreneurship background gave me that confidence that I could go out on a limb and innovate. “

EXPERT WHO SPEAKS: Know Your Worth. Resolve to Get It

As an authentic entrepreneur, I have paid my dues for well over a decade LEARNING the theory and practice of the various solutions I provider.

He’s on a road trip across Uganda to find out.

Lawrence Okettayot: “When you talk to someone they’re like, ‘Man, how do you think you’re going to accomplish this? There are European white people out there who have done a lot of technology. And you’re just a mere African. How do you think you are going to make this thing go big?”

[Video Text] There’s a lot of food waste in Africa. Enough to fee 300 million people every year.

So this is Lawrence’s solution.

It’s called a Sparky Dryer.

Powered by garden waste, it dehydrates fruits and vegetables, extending the shelf life from two days, to two years.

Lawrence Okettayot: So, this is our very own first prototype of the Sparky Dryer.

This is our heat source here.

Then this is the drying chamber, where we dehydrate all our products from.

[Video text] Lawrence is now taking the Sparky Dryer to the world.

Starting in remote northern Uganda.

The people here are still recovering from 20 years of brutal conflict that almost destroyed their farming way of life.

Lawrence Okettayot: We have lost quite a lot of people. So basically we lost how to do a lot of faming and agriculture.

[Video text] The problems here sparked the Sparky Dryer idea

So it happened when I was discussing with my uncle, and I asked him “What is really the problem with agriculture? Because you are telling me you wanted to leave farming and do some other things like building.”

Then he was like “You know the main problem is when we harvest our product, it’s quite hard for us to store all of it, because we don’t have any other means of storing it, like preserving it.”

[VIDEO TEXT] Browsing the market in the town of Kitgum reveals that more than a third of everything grown here goes to waste.

Lawrence Okettayot: When I see rotten vegetables like these…these quite inspire me to keep on going, so that next time when I get here, I don’t see anything like this. I only see nice fruit, dried fruits and dried vegetables around.

[VIDEO TEXT] But so far Lawrence has only sold seven Sparky Dryers. And one of those was to his uncle. So far has the Sparky Dryer has helped Uncle Joe?

[Uncle Joe] Before the Sparky Dryer, we were wasting a lot of our income. And we were so really poor because of that thing. We could not even take our children at school, because there was no money.

[VIDEO TEXT] But now Uncle Joe can dry his crops in just a few hours, every day. Come rain or shine. So he no longer wastes 75^ of his harvest. In fact, he wastes nothing. And he’s made enough extra money, to pay for this new building on his farm.

[Uncle Joe] When you take these two mangoes in the market, you will get only 500 shillings. A mango like this one, when it is dried, you will get 1000 shillings out of it.

[VIDEO TEXT] So the Sparky Dryer has increased Uncle Joe’s income by 400%.Just what Lawrence wanted to hear. And on the way back to Kitgum there’s more good news. Another order for a Sparky Dryer.

So the product works and demand is growing.

But will that be enough to make the Sparky Dryer a life-changing African innovation?

[Dr. Roy William Mayega – Resilient African Network] People in Uganda tend to prefer products made elsewhere, trusting that this thing really works better, if it comes, let’s say, from outside of Africa, or from some other country that they consider credible.

So that is a real issue that we need to change.

[VIDEO TEXT] But maybe that change has just begun…with Lawrence and his Sparky Dryer innovation.

Lawrence Okettayot: We want to scale this up to reach East Africa, then South African and other parts of the world. And by doing that, I’ll be the happiest man on Earth because I would have saved quite a lot of people going hungry every day.

If the above describes you/what you do to make money in your business, then stop reading right here. This article is NOT for you – as what it recommends is very unlikely to appeal to you…except, of course, if you wish to turn over a new leaf, and start treating buyers RIGHT!

What I propose in this piece will make people who buy from you WANT to stay on and relate with/buy even more, from you, for the long term – because they will be happy to have bought from you the first time!

I say the above, based on my experience based achievements. And I share below a few examples, to illustrate the point I wish to make.

Most of the buyers of my multidisciplinary range of performance improvement products and services (especially since 2010, when I resolved to focus on selling remotely to a globally paying target audience) have NEVER met with me in the flesh

And yet, many of them have – since buying from me (by taking MASSIVE LEAPS OF FAITH) gone on to maintain relationships with me that have gone beyond “business” into real friendships that both parties truly cherish.

Every now and then the possibility of meeting up has of course been raised.

For instance, recently a long time Kano based Farm CEO client – Alhaji Sanni – (who has made repeated purchases from me) called to thank me for sending him a replacement of his personalized version of my Excel-VB Ration Formulator software[NB: He’d lost the one he’d paid for – I send the latest version to EVERY past buyer who requests it, at zero cost to him/her]

Before ending the call, Alhaji expressed the desire to one day meet me in person saying

“Tayo, it would be nice to meet with you one of these days. Look, why not come down to Kano – and we will host you…”

I replied that I wanted that just as much as he did, noting that I would plan such a visit, especially since apart from him, I actually had 4 other Kano based clients – all never having met me before.

TIP: Several times in the past, my efforts to organize a live feed formulation workshop, free for my clients (see example here) had not worked out too well, because we could not agree a date convenient for most of them to attend. That challenge was what led me to create my Practical Feed Formulation (& Compounding) Home Study Video Series.

I’ve had many of my past buyers/clients – from within and outside Nigeria/Africa – express the desire to meet me, like Alhaji did.

Over a year ago, a client based in Ghana’s Accra called to tell me how he’d used my Ration Formulator to improve his custom feed compounding for his Commercial Rabbit farm, to the extent that he’d begun selling custom formulated feed to other livestock farmers.

At a point he suggested that if I ever came down to Ghana, he would want to introduce me to other farm CEOs in his network who he believed would need my help etc.

More recently, a Real Estate Consultant who has been a Web Marketing client for almost 2 years now , while we were talking on phone suggested it might be good to meet up somewhere in Lagos. We’ll probably be making that happen sometime in the near future.

For now, however, only on a handful of occasions has it so far been possible to make in person meetings with my past buyers happen.

Sometimes it has been through small group coaching events – like the one I organized for members of my MS Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation club, which I came down from Cotonou, to run in Lagos.

At other times, it has been through agreed face to face meetings – like the one I had with the chap – Enuenwemba Chukuyenum (Chuks) – standing with me in the photo below taken back in 2014.

An agribusiness consultant with an agro allied company at the time, Chuks had purchased my Ration Formulator in 2012. That was before I began my Lagos-Cotonou corridor shuttling as a Location Independent Multipreneur.

Over the course of several phone and email conversations we found we were like minded and began to share news of what we were doing with one another – ME doing more of it!

One day, I’d come into town late in the evening, and called him up to say hello/share some new ideas/insights I had, which I thought (based on our past exchanges) might interest him.

As our conversation got more animated, he said it would be nice to meet face to face, so he could put a real life face to the name. I thought THAT made sense  – so we discussed ways to make it happen.

A few days later, we met up for the first time EVER, since he became a paying client over 2 years earlier. But we hugged one another like old friends, back patting and all – on lookers would have been fooled!

Venue was the inside of the Mr. Bigg’s outlet located at Maryland bus stop area.

The photo of us was taken by my first son – who was 15 years old at the time.

By way of interest, I took the boy along to witness my meeting with this never-before-seen client of mine, so he could UNDERSTAND how I made/make money remotely, selling digital products and services to buyers, who are mostly total strangers when we first begin “talking”.

Indeed, I do this with my kids all the time – as part of what I call Best Practice Parenting.

At my coaching/speaking events, I take one of more of my kids along to SEE what I do and how, so as to give them a mental preparation towards doing similar stuff at some point in their lives, when they eventually discover the purpose and passion.

Final Words

Having said all of the above, it goes without saying, that if the product/service they’d bought from me had not met their expectations,  my clients would not be staying in touch with me, for so long (year in year out, some for OVER 7 years now – and buying more!) like they do, talk less of asking to meet with me in person.

So what have I been doing that’s made my buyers often act this way towards me?

Well, it’s simple.

I ALWAYS – and I do mean ALWAYS – under-promise to over-deliver in terms of what I SELL to them.

And by under-promising, I do not imply aiming to undercut or cheat/deny the client of what is due to him/her.

No.

Instead, what I do is to assess the client’s need, based on what s/he tells me, and then decide whether THAT need is something the SOLUTION I offer can MEET.

If YES, I tell him/her so, and if s/he’s convinced, I make the sale and deliver to him/her.

BUT…I do NOT stop there…

Instead after delivering what s/he has paid for and is expecting, I begin, over time, to give him/her all kinds of follow up benefits in various forms e.g. surprise bonuses targeted to meet the unique needs I have DEDUCED, from our “conversations” that s/he has.

And as I do that, I gently check for any challenges s/he may be having with using the solution I’ve delivered, or with making progress towards a valued goal s/he has told me about.

Wherever I discover an opportunity to add value, I go out of my way, to offer it – most times at little or no additional cost to him/her i.e. FREE.

Why do I do this?

I do it because I KNOW that when people buy from vendors, most times they do not expect that kind of passionate, enthusiastic no-strings-attached follow up from a seller who has nothing to gain by doing so.

And THAT makes them take a second look at me, and it clicks in their minds that I REALLY care.

Once they realize that I am honestly interested in helping them succeed, they open up and subsequently begin to reach out.

Over time, the relationship grows and sooner than later, the natural happens: TRUST is cemented.

As is common knowledge, when there is trust, sales become so much easier to close.

And THAT is the reason why it pays to under-promise and over-deliver!

Those you serve, in that manner, with your products and services, WILL notice the difference between YOU and others who do what you do.

And they will want to bring you closer to them, so they can have constant access to benefit from you – translating to REPEAT SALES OPPORTUNITIES for you!
