[Preliminary Highlights!] Maiden Edition of Efe Ohwofasa’s Lifestyle Business Conference, held Saturday 25th June 2016 in Nigeria’s Sapele!

It was a most exciting day for attendees at the first ever edition of Efe’s Lifestyle Business Conference, held this past Saturday 25th June 2016, at Peemos Place, Sapele-Delta state, Nigeria!

To say they were WOWed would be an understatement, as Efe literally poured out his heart to the audience!

To add more emotion to the event, there were among them some who knew him from back when he actually hawked groceries on the streets in that same city years back, while they schooled together.

What a reunion that was!

You can imagine how inspiring it was for them to see him stand and speak to them on stage in his new status as an internationally recognised business coach. Little wonder that the testimonials came pouring!

[TRIBUTE] Muhammad Ali: Builder of People & Bridges Between People!

This article is based on excerpts from a message I recently sent to a friend, in which I shared my feelings about how Muhammad Ali influenced me. It’s a short piece – especially by my standards – but it’s just right for the personal tribute I’ve been meaning to publish on this blog in commemoration his recent passing :-)

<H3>Like many people around the world who’ve watched the video of the popular “15 Rounds” tribute done by Billy Crystal 36 years ago to Muhammad Ali, I also found it very moving and inspirational.</H3>

<a href=”http://www.sportingnews.com/other-sports/news/muhammad-ali-billy-crystal-impression-15-rounds-retirement-ceremony-1979/164ofgktedjhf133vv24zxcf06″ target=”blank”>Click here to read one of several articles featuring the video version of that tribute</a>.

Like many have noted since his burial, that tribute (which Billy Crystal released on social media after Ali’s death was announced) reflected, among other things, the fact that Ali brought out the best in everbody – regardless of their differences.

He was a builder of people and bridges between people.

Ali didn’t stop at just being good at what he did. Instead he went further to act as a Social Change Agent against problems he identified in his society.

<H3>Politics did not interest him. So being politically correct was never something he tried to be </H3>

Instead he said whatever he felt needed to be said, no matter whose Ox was gored. And he neither played favourites, nor allowed narrow or irrational sentiments to influence his expressed views.

Quite often Ali was practical and realistic in making his points on issues.

Racial discrimination was one subject he really spoke passionately about. His personal experience of getting thrown out of a white owned restaurant (where they told him “we don’t serve blacks here”) in his home town of Louisville just after he returned from winning the gold medal in boxing at the 1960 Rome Olympics, fueled his drive and passion to influence a change in society!

There is no doubt that because of the way he used his fame to speak against racial discrimination in the USA for instance, changes in segregation practices happened faster in that society than they would have, if he’d chosen to keep quiet and focus on the profession at which he was exceptionally gifted and successful.

<H3>I’ve long followed Ali as he spoke against racism etc despite the risks/pains it cost him. </H3>

His life story is a testimony to the power of faith and self-belief. Despite being just one man, he succeeded in unifying people across racial, religious, language and other socio-cultural barriers.

The Muhammad Ali Centre he founded has helped many thousands of disadvantaged people while he lived, and continues to do so.

Incidentally that centre was setup to fulfil the dream he described when he answered a little boy’s question: “What will you do when you retire from boxing?”

See <a href=”http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2QE9XBovMk0″ target=”blank”>the video in which he gives his answer to that question – click here</a>.

That video and the one for the earlier mentioned tribute, as well as those in which he spoke in interviews against racism and his views of how society should be run without discrimination, are why I made him one of my role models in life.

<b>Muhammad Ali set a great example for how to excel professionally/personally and then use one’s success to make a useful impact socially in people’s lives.</b>

Our respective societies will be much better off if we can EACH emulate this man’s wonderful qualities in the way we live our lives and relate with one another.

Those Who Make False Claims About Their Abilities Frequently Reap Failure in Return [Do Your Achievements Confirm What YOU Claim You Can Do?]

Many adults know the “joke” about parents (especially fathers) who tell their kids that they (the parent) always came first in class (even when they did not) during their schooling days. They then use that “claim” to demand that their kids deliver similar performances.

The irony is however often that the achievements of most of such parents in real-life, post-school, tend not to justify the claims they make, and some of their kids, who are perceptive enough, readily notice that.

Some people seem to feel a need to impress others by making false claims about their abilities and/or past accomplishments. The point I am making is that adults, often taking a cue from prevailing societal preferences and values, sometimes feel pressured to present themselves in a manner that will win them approval from a larger audience.

That is not bad in itself, IF the person then takes steps to ACQUIRE the knowledge/competencies that will confer on him/her the ABILITY to achieve at the level of proficiency s/he wishes to be acknowledged for.

The problem however is that some of these people are NOT prepared to work that hard to get such results. They prefer instead to take shortcuts that win them the rewards they seek without the PAINS.

So they LIE.

That’s when a job applicant states military experience in his resume dating back to before he was born! Or an interviewee presents samples of past completed works, which turn out – by a twist of fate – to have actually been those done by his INTERVIEWER!!

It would interest you to know that the examples I just gave are REAL and were obtained from the published results of a recent survey conducted in the US titled “Who lies more on resumes?”. Visit the link below to read the full report.

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/career/?p=381&tag=nl.e101.

People who get ahead by using these dishonest methods are often quite adept at generating excuses for the subsequent poor performance they inevitably deliver. It’s either they were not told on time, that the task or assignment was urgent/time bound. Or a power glitch damaged their PC/flash drive just at the moment they wanted to email the finished work or print it out. :-)

Also, these people will usually be the first to kick against attempts to define roles/responsibilities clearly for proper accountability in their teams. This is because they know their survival depends on ensuring they stay hidden from scrutiny, while they ride on the efforts of other members.

No one is (and no one can be) perfect, but in order to continually function at our best, it is good to strive perpetually towards perfection. I suggest ways to avoid falling into the trap of feeling the need to claim you CAN when you KNOW you do not have the competence to DO SO.

1. Learn to speak TRUTH. A lie is a lie. When you prevaricate, it is still a lie! Learn to say exactly what you can do, and DON’T put any icing on it. If you can build simple spreadsheets with formulas, don’t claim you can also use VBA code, with Windows API calls to create top end custom Excel-VB driven spreadsheet software like those you saw on a website last month! You never know who will remember what you said, and come calling some time in the future to ask you to do something THAT advanced for them.

2. Know What You Want. When you acquire skills and knowledge related to what you WANT to do, you will usually need no push or prodding from others to keep doing so on a consistent basis. By implication, you will easily stay on the cutting edge of latest developments in your field. Telling others you can do something in relation to that area, will therefore not pose any risk to you or your integrity.

3. Believe In Yourself. You must develop your self-esteem to the point that you KNOW, and are thoroughly convinced that it is not what others say (or how they feel about you, or act towards you), that determines if you are good or not good at what you do. Learn to feel good about yourself regardless of what happens outside of you.

This is something that is very hard for a lot of people to do. Yet, working hard at it will actually end up making you come across as self-confident, assertive and at ease with yourself. The foregoing are all qualities that most people are attracted to – meaning you still end up winning not just the approval of others, but also their respect and admiration. In essence, you would have achieved the same end result, BUT without having to use dishonest methods.

In life, the people who end up succeeding with integrity, are those who are true to themselves EVERY day. Make a point of ALWAYS ensuring that you say ONLY what you can do, and DO what you say you will do. Doing so will earn you a reputation that will make others believe in, and respect you EVERYWHERE you go.

PII 019: Success is NOT Hereditary – and There is NO Gene Associated With Poverty [Hint: That’s Why This Former Street Hawker Turned International Business Coach Is Launching an Academy to Help Others Succeed!]

“Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.” – Norman Vincent Peale (NVP)

Life is not a bed of roses. Good fortune does not just fall into people’s laps.

As many who have succeeded authentically in this world will tell you, it takes work, often a lot of hard work, to make it in life.

It does not matter how talented, gifted, intelligent or connected you are. If you’re going to make a memorable impact in any area of endeavour you venture in life, you WILL have to push yourself to do more than the average person does or will do. That is what it takes to stand out and excel.

The above is why the kids of many rich and wealthy people do not always go on to be successful in their own right. Many end up squandering the wealth and resources, even the goodwill built by their parents over the years, once the latter pass on. I’m sure you can point to one or two examples you know in your society – or indeed your neighbourhood.

So, success is not hereditary. We cannot pass it from parent to offspring. In the same way, there is no scientific evidence to indicate that there is a gene associated with poverty.

This explains why some people become stupendously rich in their adult lives, despite having been raised in conditions of near crippling poverty.

In essence therefore, what I am saying is that success is not something that can be predetermined or prevented for any person. The individual determines whether or not s/he will succeed. To paraphrase the famous saying: S/he is the master of her fate – the captain of her soul.

Whatever you become in life will be the result of the efforts you were willing to make to achieve your God-given potential. Nothing outside of you can stop you from manifesting your fullest potential and accomplishing any goals you set for yourself.

The key to leveraging the foregoing truths is however your ability to THINK the right way to attract the success you seek, and to BELIEVE that you can bring your thoughts to manifest the reality you desire.

That was what NVP meant in his quote that I began this piece with.

So, if you want to succeed in spite of any obstacles you may ever encounter in life, there are 2 main things you must do at all time:

  • Don’t Have/Keep an Empty Head

This means you need to be a thinker. The book “Think and Grow Rich” has been read by many millions and counting. It has made most who applied what they read in it, to achieve success beyond their wildest dreams. The testimonials cut across societies, cultures, and races.

You need to know how to take control of your thoughts and channel them in a way that attracts what you want to you, while repelling what you do not want from you.

Get that book and read it. I read it over 20 times from cover to cover, until I internalised most parts of it to the point that I could recall them as needed for inspiration. The result was that I developed the ability to progress no matter what. Read that book. You will thank me later!

  • Don’t Have an Empty Heart

Having an empty heart means lacking passion. When you do not do what you love, you will not be able to put what we call your “heart and soul” into it. When you cannot do that, it will often be difficult to continue doing that activity that you are engaged in.

This is the nature of the human being. We need passion to be able to persevere in doing something – especially during the inevitable difficult times!

So, if you want success, you must invest quality thinking time to identify what your heart tells you is your PASSION. That will be something that you enjoy and WILL enjoy doing, no matter how bad things may ever get for you. No matter what you lack, or what you lose, you will REMAIN ever so passionate about doing it.

Only this way will you be sure of keeping yourself HUNGRY to succeed in any area of endeavour you choose to venture.

No matter how badly life treats you, doing the 2 things mentioned above CAN – and WILL – help you turn your fortunes around for the better, IF you do them right.

There are so many successful people who have told their life stories that confirm the accuracy of the above statement.

You can come up with a few names yourself I’m sure. Both in your country and out of it. It goes without saying that I know a good number myself, and have studied many of them to build my own success despite the severe visitations of prolonged adversity I encountered, especially over the past 14 years in self-employment.

However, every now and then I come across a true story of someone who applied the above steps to succeed, and the details of the experience he had really impress me.

One such person is UK based Business Coach, Professional Speaker and Marketing Consultant – Efe Ohwofasa.

Efe is a client whose work I’m promoting, because I believe in his brand.

We’ve never met in the flesh since he reached out to me in 2013. I’ve now worked remotely with him now for about 8 months on 2 projects.

His amazing rag to riches success story has really touched me, and when he told me about his project to give back in Africa, I decided to go the extra mile to do my bit to help out.

Below is a message I’ve been sending out.

If you can spare the time from your busy schedule – help spread the word if you know any persons or groups/associations/organisations in the Benin – Delta area that may be interested.

There are plans to roll out in Lagos, Abuja and other cities. So we’ve been trying to connect with partners.

To Demonstrate Real Faith in the Creator, You Simply Cannot Use “Safety Nets”!

Some people readily announce – at every opportunity – that they BELIEVE or have FAITH in the Creator. Yet in the way they LIVE, especially privately, in thought and action, they often fail to show it.

What’s more, despite what they profess, these same people, in speaking about their goals, and/or problems they face, they complain about “enemies”, “forces”, “agents” holding their “progress”, “blessings” or even their “destinies”!

How is it possible for a person who truly lives with faith, to be at the perpetual mercy of such evil or ungodly influences?

That just does not add up.

As a result of their above described mental attitudes, many of these people go out of their way to put all sorts of “safety nets” in place, from a just-in-case disposition!

Examples: cutting corners while rationalising that you’re just being realistic; compromising to lower your ethical or moral values/standards in exchange for a concession you seek etc.

Truth is you either believe whole-heartedly (it’s called “blind and unquestioning faith”) or you don’t.

You need no safety nets if you do.

Simply let go and take daily action with confidence based on your faith, to pursue your goals.

This has nothing to do with religion. It is simply a spiritual principle. Every human being is capable of exercising faith and can therefore apply this principle successfully in his/her life!

Like the gentleman whose 2 Facebook post previews and links I share below:

Make the World Better by Being Beautiful Inside, Long After Your Outer Beauty Has Faded [Tribute to Muhammad Ali]

“The shoot produced haunting, intimate photos of a champion ravaged by age and Parkinson’s disease, though the spark clearly was still there”

.

The above is what I choose to take away from this Washington Post article titled “Muhammad Ali’s final photo shoot captured a spark that still lingered – The Washington Post“.

The writer himself knew it mattered enough to mention it (I.e the “spark”), not just in the article, but in its title.

The truth is Muhammad Ali remained a fighter long after he’d left the ring. Many lose that spark with age and illness less severe than the one he battled most of the rest of his life after retiring.

Ali defied it – just like he defied attempts to shut him up or put him (or his people) down. That’s why he’ll remain the same beautiful man in the memories of millions the world over.

We all age. It’s inevitable. But only physically.

Ageing does not – indeed cannot – “ravage” our minds, like it can do to our bodies. Which is great because it is that which resides in our minds (I.e our thoughts) that ultimately makes us who we are – or indeed who we become.

This is why I recommend we all work hard to become, and remain ‘beautiful on the inside’, like Muhammad Ali did until he passed on!
