Be Easy to Identify Online

Success in business (or life in general) requires getting others to trust you. Today, people will readily Google your name to find out more about you. Do you have your first name and surname registered as a domain name i.e. www.firstnamesurname.com? This article explains why your success may depend in-part, on doing that – as well as a few other things.

People contemplating connecting with us, can make up their minds in seconds. Some may be so fickle minded that one small hint of inconsistency in your online profile or presence can make them flee – literally speaking.

That’s Why You Need to “Protect and Nurture Your Google/Online Identity”

A few years ago, I wrote an article on the above theme – based on my observations and experiences.

Googl’ing a person’s name can sometimes throw up links leading to profiles or pages of persons bearing the same first and last names as him/her. Maybe it happens with yours?

If you’ve never Google’d your name – try it now. If other people show up with the same name as yours, it may not be a good thing…for YOU.

I have met a number of people who faced this dilemma, in their business.

I’ve been lucky with my own name though. I have never encountered anyone online bearing the same first and surname combination with me.

Since 2006 I’ve done a lot of heavy content publishing that’s helped me gain reasonable name recognition. But even then, whenever I checked – even way beyond page 10 of Google’s results, I never came across a namesake.

That notwithstanding, a few weeks ago, I decided to register www.tayosolagbade.com to cover that loose end.

And that’s why I’m now writing this piece – especially for persons in business who find they have at least one or more online name sakes.

Persons in Paid Employment Can Also Benefit From Doing This

At first, there is a tendency to think that this may be a non-issue for those who are not in business e.g. employees.

I would however argue that you should consider making it an issue.

It is in your best interest, to ensure your employer (current or prospective) has no difficulty picking you out from amongst your namesakes online.

Ambitious career persons in today’s world, actually purchase their own names as domains.

They then point the URL to profiles on free hosting accounts. Some even purchase cheap hosting and build their resume websites on it.

For Business Persons, It Is Especially Imperative

For instance, I strongly believe that as a person in business, you must aim to dominate (at least) page 1 of Google’s results for your name. At least 80% should be all about YOU.

In my considered opinion, that reduces chances of people mistaking a namesake for me.

Publishing good quality content regularly, via an intelligent web marketing system, can help you gradually achieve that.

One quick and reliable way to boost your claim to your name on the web (and search engines take this into serious consideration), is to register your name as a domain.

That way, you alone get to ultimately use that URL. No one else.

Imagine what would happen if a namesake beat you to it, and registered the domain?

People who meet (or hear/read about) you may Google you (this happens a lot!), and click on the URL for your name, only to discover a different person!

How confused do you think they would be?

It could be worse. For instance, some may not even realise the person they’ve found is NOT you.

If that happens, you’d better hope what they see pleases them. Otherwise, you’re done!

The above could happen to a potential client/buyer who remembers your name but is unable to recall the URL for your company correctly.

If Your Namesake Does Something Bad, It Could Cost You Greatly!

Be you entrepreneur or employee, you can be negatively affected if your name sake has a bad reputation online.

Some namesakes may do naughty things, linking negative reports to their names.

In 2010, I actually interacted with a prospective client who had this problem. A namesake of his showed up on page 1 of Google, with screaming news headlines (from BBC and other websites) describing the namesake as a criminal. Same name. Exact same spelling!

Like I told him “Few people will even bother trying to investigate to verify if it’s really you the news story is about!”…that includes potential clients/employees!

Think about it. When BBC reports a thing, most people accept it as God’s truth.

Yes they do! And that’s why it’s best to consolidate your name recognition online via regular quality content publishing in YOUR NAME.

It’s your best form of defence against inadvertent or deliberate negativity.

Final Words: Protect Yourself!

I’ll therefore end by saying, if you do nothing else, register your name as a domain (preferably top level e.g. dot com) ASAP.

But if you really want to be in control of what happens when people do an online search in your name, adopt a custom Web Marketing System. (Email me via tayo at tksola dot com for details of what it entails – or use this contact form).

You will NOT regret doing it.

If you ever have to organise a training program or course for retirees or aspiring start-ups, aim to deliver “content” that make attendees your fervent advocates, because what they learn REALLY helps them succeed. This article offers a lot of ideas for generating useful practical content to delight your attendees. Big thanks to E.O, a business coach based in the UK, for initiating a discussion with me on this theme!

1. Offer Information Products Describing Viable Business Ideas They Can Launch

Do the needed ground work/research. Generate a compilation of tried and tested business ideas/concepts. Produce information products, possibly with previews – or even greater details – of what it would take, or where to get help to learn what it would take.

I personally conduct interviews with established individuals in key fields (farm business owners in particular) and publish for sale.

My popular Feed Formulation Handbook and Ration Formulator software came into being partly as a result of the above process. With each such product, I offer a workshop or seminar.

Example: A New Information Product I’m Developing for a Learning Event

Title: How to Make Drinks You CAN SELL from Peels of Pineapple and Nine (9) Other Fruits (You can get a 15 page promotional PDF announcing this by following the instructions below).

I’m already compiling detailed step-by-step information (with photos of basic tools and equipment for even a home based kitchen table operation).

The idea is to enable attendees explore ways to start-up with minimal funds. It’s often best to test the waters of entrepreneurship, with low capital overheads business ideas, to retain worthwhile profits.

Your attendees will be grateful to have this kind of useful resource – because It will save the money!

2. Offer Information Products Describing Guiding Philosophies They Need for Entrepreneurial Success

Most retirees or first time start-ups RARELY know many non-technical requirements for business success. Very few trainers talk about it. Attendees just learn the technicalities of the business. And then they launch out.

But they often lack the mental attitude to make it – especially when things get tough (which is often)!

Providing your attendees a reliable reference document they can consult to draw inspiration, and ideas, to cope with INEVITABLE adversity in business can help them keep going till they succeed.

Example: My “Entrepreneur’s Survival Reference Manual” – Written in 2004

See the cover image below…

Cover page for Tayo Solagbade's Entrepreneur’s Survival Reference Manual

I wrote this “manual” originally for myself. I used to read and re-read it to remind myself to retain the right mental attitude in spite of great setbacks.

Later, I began offering it for sale (spiral bound and photocopied). A FREE 4 hour workshop is announced on the cover. So that’s the link with my learning event.

It’s 80 pages long. I’m now revising it, to include Location Independent Entrepreneuring that I now do from here in Benin Republic. Once it’s ready, I intend to publish it via my Lulu.com online store, as a physical book I can give out to individual or at learning events.

3. Provide a Business Start-Up Support Service for Your Attendees Post-Event

a. You can prepare and sell feasibility study packs to intending start-ups or prospective retirees. Offer to help them work through it to implementation.

b. Your Training/Talks/CDs/DVDs/Podcasts/Webinars/ can be prepared to highlight key factors that can prevent start-ups from succeeding in their local environment. You will actually investigate their real life socio-economic environment, to verify what’s worked. Offered for sale or via access to paid membership.

c. Setup an Entrepreneur Support Network for Start-Ups

This goes beyond the learning event proper. I am convinced it’s a crucially important requirement.

Setup a coaching support network for attendees who (after attending your event) decide to start their own enterprises.

You would have an emotional investment in your attendees, so it makes sense to do this.Work out a pocket-friendly fee structure.

My pineapple based drinks PDF report has already been requested by some farm business CEOs in Nigeria who subscribe to my newsletter (and even a few I’ve met here in Benin Republic). It announces my paid support service for those who may wish to start a drinks production unit.

I’ve NEVER met most of them in the flesh for over 5 years. But we relate as if were childhood friends! My only link with them is my Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas website (www.iff.spontaneousdevelopment.com), and the newsletter.

Yet, many of them trust me so much, that they often take up my offers/buy my new products. This is because each time, my work adds value. And I’ve always stayed in touch, even at my own expense.

This recent email (screenshot below) from a subscriber of many years – Screenshot of emal from a long time subscriber – Azi Bulus – proves it pays to nurture relationships:

Screenshot of email from a long time subscriber - Azi Bulus

I send my active subscribers bulk SMS messages, and even make LONG distance phone calls to give them useful information etc.

This is what shows them that I care. And I really do.

I strongly believe pre-retirement learning events MUST offer attendees an opportunity to get long term support and coaching, from competent experts.

The journey to success is rarely a short one.

You can make a massive difference in people’s lives, by being accessible post-event, for the long term. Even if only via phone or email, for a fee.

Help attendees through the start-up phase, till they can stand on their own.

Apart from those you help this way, YOUR creator will be pleased with your conduct!

I’ve seen enough over the past 10 yeas, to know this is so important.

ANYONE who offers this kind of support will stand out from other learning solution providers.

Tomorrow, in the Entrepreneurship category on my SD Nuggets blog – I’ll discuss “Why (Pre-)Retirement Courses by Companies Often Fail to Help Retirees”.

Need More Details of How to Make The Above Ideas Work for YOU?

If you need more specific details of how to make use of the ideas I’ve shared in this newsletter, send me a message using this request form – with “Re: Speaking to Retirees & Aspiring Entrepreneurs” in the subject line.

THE FOOL WHO THOUGHT HE WAS WISE (A 14 Year Old’s Useful Short Story On HIV-AIDS Prevention)

This insightful piece was written by a 14 year old boy – Amaechi O.S – 6 months ago. It was typed by him in MS Word format. The story delivers a powerful message regarding a dangerous misconception some people – especially kids or “uneducated” adults – may have about “how to wear” condoms to prevent HIV infection.

I’ve edited it for spelling, comprehension and grammar but added NOTHING to it, and published it here (i.e.www.tinyurl.com/AmeachiOnHIV). A PDF version is available via a download link at the bottom of this post. Please share it freely – and do let Amaechi have your feedback – if any – in the comments section or via email (see below)

Oh yes, one more thing: Consider this the VERY first guest post I’m publishing on my blog…LOL! And who knows…Amaechi may end up becoming another teenage writing genius – like Bamidele Onibalusi!!

======STORY BEGINS====

There was once a family. They had lived through many generations, and were rich, strong, God fearing people.

But one day, one of their offspring brought disgrace to the family.

His name was Leinad.

Leinad thought he was clever, but often did things that showed he was not very smart.

On that fateful day, armed robbers broke into the house where he lived with his family, and demanded for two million naira.

But they were fair with him, and gave him two options.

They told him to choose between being injected with a syringe containing HIV infected blood, or giving them the two million naira.

“We will be back in five days time”, said the men of the underworld.

After five days they came back asking him if he had made his decision.

He said, “Yes. I want to give you the money”.

“Where is it”, said the men of the under world.

“It is in my room”, he replied.

“Then bring it out now!” they said.

Leinad went to his room, but instead of getting the money, he wore a condom on his manhood, then went back downstairs, and said:

“I want the syringe, I want the syringe man!”

So, they tried to inject him in the buttocks with the syringe.

“No, on my hand” he said.

They injected him and left saying “You did this to yourself!”

But Leinad laughed saying: “Those fools they don’t know that I am wearing a condom”.

Two years later he died of HIV.

No. 94: Use Physical Fitness to Boost Your Productivity (4 Tips)

Professional public speaking can be hard work, being both physically and psychologically demanding. The financial rewards are however attractive enough to make many willing to do it.

But when we do it without ensuring we remain in the best state of health, BAD things can happen. And we may be forced to resolve those “bad things”, by spending, even when not earning. That’s in addition to the pain, and loss of other income earning opportunities, we may also suffer.

This truth applies in any vocation.

No. 94: Use Physical Fitness to Boost Your Productivity (4 Tips)

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

**********

Professional public speaking can be hard work, being both physically and psychologically demanding. The financial rewards are however attractive enough to make many willing to do it.

But when we do it without ensuring we remain in the best state of health, BAD things can happen. And we may be forced to resolve those “bad things”, by spending, even when not earning. That’s in addition to the pain, and loss of other income earning opportunities, we may also suffer.

This truth applies in any vocation.

Let me illustrate by sharing a true story. Names have been changed for privacy reasons.

Ednut, a talented engineering project manager (in his mid-thirties), with a large multinational, was managing a team of engineers to implement a high capital project on a remote location.

Due to unexpected delays, they were behind schedule. So he worked longer hours to oversee the day and night shifts. This meant going home as late as 3.00a.m., and returning by 9.00a.m.

Each day, he had to work on the PC to collate figures of costs and materials used, for dispatch to his boss in the company headquarters. He was young, and used to pushing himself hard.

One day, he was driving home after midnight on the deserted road. At a point, he fell asleep behind the wheel, and ran his car right into a tree at over 100km per hour.

The car was a wreck. But in what many called a miracle, he survived with minor injuries.

Speaking to colleagues later in his home (where the doctor had identified he suffered from exhaustion), he said “You know, one minute I was awake, the next I simply knocked off!

But he was lucky. It had cost him little. The company paid his medical bill, and replaced his official car. Now imagine if he’d been self-employed? Hopefully, you see what I’m getting at.

Investing time and effort in being physically fit can do wonders for your health. It can also help you avoid costly accidents, or mistakes (e.g. typing in the wrong figures into an important financial analysis spreadsheet!)- by increasing your strength and endurance.

By implication, doing what you do as an expert in your field will become easier for you.

I offer 4 tips you can use.

1. You Need Good Health to Work Productively Physical Fitness Will Help You

Poor health can make progress more difficult than it should be. To do productive work, you need strength and stamina. Physical fitness gives you both.

For instance, your important organs (the heart, lungs etc) are kept in good shape when you engage in regular physical exercise. Your muscles gain strength, and you develop physical and mental stamina. You also burn off extra calories and avoid building up harmful fat deposits that could predispose you to heart related problems.

These and many other benefits mean you’ll have less need to see the doctor or take medication.

Most of us know the above benefits. But in chasing success, we can get really busy and forget. The irony is that poor fitness can prevent you from being your best – physically, mentally, even emotionally.

When that happens, we become less capable of competently implementing tasks that can help us achieve our goals. Ever tried making sense of spreadsheet data with a throbbing headache?

What about standing for many long hours over 3 or more days, speaking to audiences, and taking questions?

Would you be able to deliver the same level of “speaking performance” ALL day, and each day?

Or would your performance fall (e.g. due to “fatigue”) as the days, or hours go by?

The truth is people rarely talk about this aspect. And yet it can play a major role in how well you perform.

Hmm…I would say those questions make good food for thought :-)

If you lack them stamina to cope with the physical/intellectual demands of doing your work, your passion may NOT be enough to save you!

Keep in mind that attendees may have an opportunity to rate you alongside other presenters during a week long event, for instance. If you run out of steam before the end, they’ll notice it, and it would affect their rating of you.

With a good level of physical fitness, your chances of giving a good account of yourself in any area of endeavour greatly increase. That is the truth.

What You Can Do To Get Fit

Engage more actively in physical exercise – as often as possible.

By this I refer to nothing the average person cannot do. See examples below.

a. WALKING, BIKING, SWIMMING ETC

Almost anyone can do these, regardless of age.

I walk a lot when practical/possible. I’ve found it useful for getting to know more new people, and places, than if I drove around in a car.

If the work you do often makes you stay in one place for long periods, try going out without your car whenever possible.

Seize every opportunity you can find to take a stroll. Reports indicate that 30 minutes of walking everyday can give enough health boosting exercise to keep you going for life.

Consider adopting biking instead of driving. Swimming is also an excellent way to exercise the whole body and relax at the same time.

b. PHYSICAL EXERCISE REGIMEN

Adopt a workout routine that works. Since leaving competitive sports (over 18 years ago), I’ve used more or less the same 15 minute regimen.

It basically involves doing a series of pushups, sit-ups, and finishing with certain yoga based exercises. That simple regimen keeps me going for well over 24 hours (more on that later).

Among other benefits, you’ll bounce back faster after working long hours or late. When you tire less quickly, you’ll get more work done. That will boost efforts you make to improve your finances.

Find something that works for you. Talk to a fitness expert if you need help.

A WORD OF CAUTION

Interestingly, you don’t need to push yourself over the edge to get physically fit. So don’t go overboard. There’s no need to do much exercising at one go. Take it one step at a time, especially if you’ve not done this before – or for a while.

What the body really needs is for the exercise to be regular and consistent. It does not have to be exhausting. Like I said, talk to a fitness expert (or a friend who knows) for guidance.

2. When Fit, You’ll be Able to Work Late/Go the Extra Mile Without “Help”

Your body talks to you. And you’ll hear it if you listen carefully. When you choose to work longer hours to finish a project with a looming deadline, it may speak even louder.

You may feel sleepy, and decide to take coffee. That works for some people. But I have never liked the idea of using something outside of myself to stay awake :-)

Luckily, I discovered that staying fit gave me the needed endurance to go the extra mile(s).

I suggest you engage in regular exercise to build your energy reserve. You’ll develop both physical and mental stamina, which will help you go many extra miles literally at will.

Since my time in paid employment, I’ve worked between 10 to 20 hours almost every day. Some would say I’m a workaholic. But I say when you enjoy your work, it’s the same as having fun :-)

When necessary I work all night. I’ve never needed coffee to keep going. No exaggeration. I’ll be 43 this July (2013). And I still work that way.

It’s amazing how being fit can enable you stay wide eyed and alert to do serious work, when you really need to (adrenaline plays an important role of stimulation here).

The late great Zig Ziglar indulged in physical exercise a lot, and he said it helped him achieve improved productivity.

In fact, in his book “Over the Top”(1994), he revealed that at 67 he was in “marvelous physical condition” and that he believed his “best and most productive years” to be in front of him.

When you consider how well Zig finished his run on earth, you have to agree with him!

3. Invest In Periodic Medical Checkups

This goes without saying. But I’ll say it anyway.

Physical exercise is not a cure all. Certain health issues will not be addressed by the most intense of workouts. And very often, the earlier you detect them the better your chances of saving yourself money, time – and possibly pain – in resolving them.

So consider talking to your doctor about having routine checkups done, just to be sure everything is working right in there :-)

4. Poor Fitness Can Shut You Down, Making You Lose Your Good Health – and More!

It’s so easy to get carried away working to make the next million that you forget to take care of yourself. But your body does not forget. It adds it all up over time, till it’s forced to quit on you.

Don’t wait till that happens. Some who made the mistake never recovered fully from it.

Even if you don’t make any extra money, at least keep what you’ve made – and possibly grow it. One of the worst things that can happen to anyone is to spend the bulk of your finances managing a bad health problem(s)!

Getting – and staying – physically fit can help you maintain good health for the long term. That would boost your ability to achieve your goals in life – as an expert in your field and/or via public speaking as well..

Neglecting to do so could make you prone to developing expensive health problems. And that would negatively impact your finances: Expenses on medical consultation – and therapy – could grow, while income generation activities drop e.g. pursuing or taking up speaking opportunities gets difficult when you’re ill!

Incidentally – and on a final note – having investments in passive income generation channels could minimise your losses in the event of health problems.

But it would not eliminate potential health threats: For instance, when you make extra money without moving around physically, there’s a danger that you may overlook the need to pursue physical fitness.

Don’t.

Otherwise you set yourself up for health problems that could deplete (and/or exhaust) what you should pass on to your offspring.

No. 93: Aim to Be Reliably Competent – Not Popular

Competence, when reliable – and especially when exceptional – can lead to popularity or fame. However, chasing popularity ahead of competence can make you prone to avoidable mistakes e.g. going inadequately prepared for a speaking gig, and goofing up.

Now that, could also make you popular – but it would be for the wrong reasons!

In this issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter, I discuss 2 reasons why chasing popularity ahead of reliable (and preferably “exceptional”) competence, exposes you to the risk of looking bad as an expert-who-speaks.

1. Premature Popularity Can Cause Subtle – But Potentially Costly – Distractions

Celebrities in various areas of endeavor know fame can be a double edged sword. So they’ve learnt to take necessary precautions in their daily lives.

Some of us do not appreciate the value of having “unknown” faces. We can walk down the street anytime we like, to the bar, or to watch a local football team play in the neighborhood. Not many people – except friends, family or associates – would take any notice of us, talk less of calling out to others to say “look!”.

Michael Jackson was often referred to as a mega star. He could not dare go out in public that way. Just like many other famous people still with us today.

Thankfully, popularity comes in degrees. I doubt I could tolerate such loss of my personal freedom that Jackson had to endure. But we all have our passions. He achieved results in his chosen area of expertise, that made him that popular.

When what you do puts you in the public’s eye, popularity tends to be a natural outcome of demonstrating reliable competence – over a reasonable period of time.

For Jackson and other celebrities, their popularity, which came as a result of what they did(do) so well, also posed (poses) a serious source of distraction.

You cough, and it becomes news. You decide to change your attire, or car, and someone comes up with a creative interpretation in the media. Suddenly everyone has something new to say about you, or what you did – and sometimes it may not be so nice.

Okay, so that’s more common in the entertainment industry.

But famous people in more formal vocations (e.g. public speaking) also get plenty of attention from the public. This is why it pays to FIRST devote time and energy to honing your skills, until you’re able to flawlessly deliver solutions or results to those you serve.

If popularity subsequently results from that, you’ll be relatively safe, since doing more of what you do, AFTER it arrives, will be easy for you.

However if you go around drawing attention to yourself as a “superstar” of sorts in your field, without gaining reliable competence, you set yourself up to look bad – eventually (emphasis on reliable).

2. You Can Mistake Your Premature Popularity for Achievement

Secondly, chasing popularity can make you stop striving to improve – you start thinking you’ve arrived. Especially once your efforts to be popular make people start paying more attention to you.

I read a quote credited to a famous writer. It admonished aspiring or up and coming writers not to mistake recognition for achievement. In other words, don’t get carried away by the applause of your admirers. Focus on moving to the next level of accomplishment.

Look at great achievers in the world. Even when they have been acknowledged as being the best at what they do, they never really stop trying to do more.

No they don’t. Instead they strive to create new value to add to what exists. And sometimes they invest energy and time in helping others learn how to do what they have done.

Yet, some relative newcomers in different fields (including the speaking business) make one big splash in the pond, and suddenly think they’ve done it all.

There is a big difference between “having potential” and “actualizing” it.

For instance, a person can arrive with talent and abilities never before seen or heard of.

However, long term success achievement cannot be compared to one flash in the pan – no matter how big the flash is.

Reproducibility & repeatability are crucial for demonstrating reliable competence!

You have to be able to deliver to expectations over and over, to prove you’re reliably competent. And this applies in ANY area of endeavor.

So, even when people begin to announce that you’re the next big thing, it pays to focus on actually BECOMING that big thing, rather than playing to the gallery.

Final Words

You can’t just do one big thing, and then think you can ride on the back of that, (followed by other relatively mediocre showings), to achieve long term relevance.

People who try to do that rarely end up well – for obvious reasons!

The late Zig Ziglar gained worldwide fame by FIRST demonstrating reliable competence. Robert Kiyosaki also achieved global recognition the same way.

Both handle(d) their popularity well as a result.

Many other examples abound (including that of this renowned veteran in the speaking business), that confirm it pays to achieve (exceptional) competence first, rather than chase popularity.

Doing otherwise could lead to costly negative consequences.

No. 92: Caution – A Prospect With Money May Be Bad For YOU! (3 Tips)

**********

People are not the same in the way they approach pursuit of set goals and objectives. You may be willing to be focused and committed. But your prospect may not.

That’s why even when they have money, some people may not be good for you as clients. And if you take them on, things could end badly for you. You therefore need a reliable system to evaluate prospects, so as to choose clients who are a good fit for you.

This issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter discusses 3 checks you can use to protect yourself.

Human Beings Are Unpredictable

If you’ve been reading my speaking IDEAS newsletter, you know I advocate using public speaking as a business marketing strategy. So, in addition to pocketing a fee for speaking, it can get you hired to do what you do as an expert.

Delivering a speech requires you to be in control of yourself. That’s relatively easy.

However, working with people to achieve a preferred outcome can be more challenging.

And that’s because it involves the unpredictable human variable – outside of yourself.

Three (3) Checks You Can Use to Avoid Taking On a Wrong Client

First, I assume you’ve already established that the client has the means, and is willing, to pay you.

What follows are 3 useful checks you would be wise to do before saying yes to such a client – even if s/he offers loads of money.

If you want long term success, and would like to build on your successes, adopt them for use with clients.

1. Willingness to Commit Required Time & Effort?

You need the commitment of a client as the decision maker in her company, to get your work done. If she’s a solo entrepreneur, you’ll need her to be available to supply agreed data, finish tasks, review progress or take other decisions.

Get formal agreement on this. Else you may end up being accused of failing to deliver to the deadline, when in fact you lost time chasing her around to keep appointments with you.

This happened to me more than once. I’ve learned my lesson well!

2. Clearly Defined (and Realistic) Expectations?

What is the final outcome to look like? Does she know what she wants? If yes, is it something you can deliver? If no, let her know. Propose viable alternatives.

You’re the expert. Show that you know your stuff.

Don’t let the lure of money being offered trick you into saying YES, when you should say NO!

I use an MS Excel based Functional Requirements Specification (FRS). The client fills in the fields. We review the list together. In certain cases I point out something I do not think can be delivered (or measured) as specified. Or one not covered by the original scope of work.

Eventually we sign off the FRS. The client later uses it to check that I’ve delivered what s/he paid for.

If you cannot get a prospect to complete this process with you, it would be unwise to start work.

Indeed, this process can guide you to quote a better fee for your remuneration – and get her to accept!

3. Readiness to Take Ownership?

What about when you finish the job and hand it over?

Will she put your solution to use or implement the agreed actions as prescribed?

Let’s say you’re a physical fitness/weight loss expert for instance. And you’ve spent 12 weeks with an obese client – providing lessons on proper nutrition, and conducting physical fitness training sessions.

How can you be sure this client will CONTINUE to apply what s/he has learnt from you?

You could say it’s not your business. I however argue that if you indiscriminately take on clients who don’t follow through, you’ll end up shooting yourself in the foot.

Question: How?

Answer: They are likely to make you look like what you offer does not work.

You’ll consequently have fewer success stories to tell future prospects.

Consider also, the real possibility that such people may choose to deny they’re at fault, by claiming your methods did not work for them!

Final Words: Always Check to Be Sure You Can Help a Prospect Succeed Before You Say YES

Take Burt Dubin for instance.

He has helped many wannabes become highly paid international speakers over the past 25 years.

But to achieve this feat, he does not take on all comers. People actually have to apply for consideration!

Here’s what Burt said while speaking with Clarissa Burt on her show:

“You can’t just send me money. I have to feel I can help you succeed.”

It is this precaution he takes, that enables Burt guarantee success in the speaking business to clients. He KNOWS those he picks will diligently invest needed time and effort, to get results that will earn them MORE than they pay him!

I believe all service providers should emulate Mr. Dubin.

So, next time somebody comes waving money in your face for your services, don’t get so carried away.

Take your time to check that the person will be a good fit for YOU, as a client. Your success depends on this.

In the long run, you’ll be glad you did, because like Burt, you’re likely to have tonnes of testimonials and success stories for use in winning over more “good fit” clients.

If you need more specific details of how to make use of the ideas I’ve shared in this newsletter, send me a message using this request form (with “Re: Caution – A Prospect With Money May Be Bad For YOU! (3 Tips)” in the subject line).

No. 91: How an Expert State of Mind Can Hurt YOU (5 Tips)

I know. They call you an expert at what you do. And you certainly consider yourself one. After all, you did not get to be this good by accident.

Well, if truth be told, as experts-who-speak, this danger is even more REAL for us! This week’s issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter explains why that is so, and what you can do to protect yourself.

No. 90: How an Expert State of Mind Can Hurt YOU (5 Tips)

**********

I know. They call you an expert at what you do. And you certainly consider yourself one. After all, you did  not get to be this good by accident.

So how can having an expert state of mind possibly be bad for you?

Well, if truth be told, as experts-who-speak, this danger is even more REAL for us! This week’s issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter explains why that is so, and what you can do to protect yourself.

1. You Are an Expert  – But You Will Not Always Have the Answers

It’s in all of us. Along with the self-assurance and confidence that comes from knowing you’re competent, there comes a potential tendency to forget we don’t really know it all.

Or let me put it this way: you can forget that you MAY not always know what will, or will not work, in your field of expertise.

As experts-who-speak, that can happen often if we’re not cautious.

What we know to be true today, may get overtaken by a newer discovery tomorrow.

So, you’ll probably want to avoid telling anyone something’s “impossible” now, because YOU can’t see it with YOUR experience based expert insight.

Why? Because someone else just might!

2. One Real Life Example of How Expert Mindsets Can Be Bad For Everyone

There was a time when everyone saw nothing wrong with feeding babies, with man made baby foods, without breastfeeding.

Decades afterwards, came the wonderful discovery (known to village dwellers for centuries!), about the advantages of feeding babies breast milk from nursing mothers.  It provides nutritional and health benefits that are hard to duplicate. So everyone switched back to breast feeding!

But certain medical “experts” led us down the earlier path, and kept us going that way for decades. What were they thinking then? And what were WE thinking by listening to them for so long?

How come no one thought to challenge their ideas and recommendations much earlier ?

The answer is that we all regarded them as experts. And societal conditioning makes us believe they know better than the rest of us.

They also knew that – which was probably why they relaxed, and never thought to challenge themselves either – through all those decades!

Do you now see how this “expert mindset” has a tendency to put everyone in trouble? Aha!

3. Authentic Experts Must Be Willing to Be Objective

As an expert-who-speaks, it is highly conceivable that you may find yourself taken up by an audience member, who during the “Q and A” session, challenges a line of thinking, or opinion you voiced.

Avoid getting defensive or taking it personal. Remember that s/he may not have your level of expert insight. Ironically, that may sometimes actually be an advantage – for him/her!

For instance,  a new person who joins an establishment, often bring “fresh eyes” to bear – and is likely to be less sentimentally attached to the existing state of affairs.  As a result, she would more readily identify aspects needing improvement that others have become blind to .

The above perspective could be one applicable to the question-asking audience member I mentioned earlier. S/he could be asking with the “fresh eyes/mind” of one who has not become too familiar with the subject.

Sometimes an expert voices an opinion, and people accept it.

Then when a contrary or competing school of thought comes up, the expert may feel defensive.

The smart thing would however be to maintain an objective mindset. Carefully assess the new line of thinking for its merits, and then offer an informed view based on that assessment.

This will put you back in the driver’s seat as an authority on your subject, because you would then be endorsing that new perspective using your expert insight!

4. Problems Arise When Experts Refuse to Acknowledge They Don’t Know Everything

It’s great to think of yourself as an expert, and to go about your work with that mental attitude.

However, never let it intoxicate you into believing you alone will always have the last say about issues relating to your field of expertise.

That would be a costly mistake – and you risk making yourself looking bad in the long run.

How? Well, if – and this has happened a  lot in history – the other person is eventually proved right, all your narrow minded arguments could make you look LESS than the expert you wanted to be seen as!

If you still don’t get it, let me elaborate further: a REAL expert can also demonstrate her expertise by being one of those who first recognises the next big idea, and endorses or recommend sit to others.

And that includes ideas that eclipse her own. You need not always be the originator of the next big thing, to be relevant!

(NB: It goes without saying that you should stand your ground, if you are honestly convinced the other argument or idea  does not hold water. Say it as you see it. You do NOT need phony humility!)

5. Resist The Urge to Adopt the Expert State of Mind

The moment one gets into the expert state of mind, a great number of things become impossible” – Henry Ford

Henry Ford reportedly distrusted experts, believing they were too familiar with the reasons that something could not be done.

For was (and is) NOT the only one who feels this way about experts…

For instance, James Cook (Millionaire Entrepreneur, and best selling author of “The Start-up Entrepreneur”) warned aspiring entrepreneurs, that people (e.g. experts) who offer advice will often give it based on how your (i.e. the entrepreneur’s) idea affects them.

In other words, they will give you answers that depend on whether they think your idea has negative or positive implications for them.

This a basic self-preservation tendency based on a natural instinct that all human beings have.

As an expert-who-speaks, DO NOT to let that instinct control you. Especially in relating to your audience members who will ask for your informed opinion, view, perspective, and advice – be it openly, or in private.

Instead, be authentic and objective – regardless of whether doing so will contradict a position you may have previously adopted on the issue.

That will actually cement – and certainly NOT erode – your credibility as an expert!

F-Y-I: Google Confirms Hacker Attacks On This Website

I’ve periodically announced the fact that I believe that – this website (spontaneoudevelopment.com) – is a target of selectively orchestrated online attacks. Well, this past Wednesday 22nd May 2013, I got a detailed email from Google Web master Support confirming some of my suspicions.

Below is the detailed hacker email alert sent me by Google, and also the email I’ve since sent to my web host – in line with the advice given by Google.

I’ve also already commenced taking action to clean out the mentioned sites.

(Yesterday a power blackout lasting from about 8.30a.m till 10pm across Benin Republic meant I was unable to start earlier).

Hi

Google just gave me this heads up (see forwarded email below).

A few days back, I got an email that suggested efforts were being made to

sabotage my website. This confirms it.

See a blog post I put up about it:

http://spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets/fyi-orchestrated-sabotage-campaign-against-this-website/

Can you give me any ideas of how to proceed in resolving this problem.

Would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks in advance,

With kindest regards,

Tayo

PS: Sometimes I even get the feeling my emails are being intercepted and

blocked. But again, I can’t prove it. Maybe this has something to do with

it.

Sincerely, Google Search Quality Team

Here’s My Understanding Of The Discovery Made By Google About Attacks On My Websites

I’m sharing all this information to help others, who now, or in future, may have similar experiences. It always helps to read about what others faced, and measures they took to recover.

The malicious code discovered on my websites by Google, was found to be (selectively) redirecting people who visit my website to possible scam – or spam – websites.

So, when someone visits my website from Google, they may even get a virus or malicious code warning about my website. And this will make the intending visitor quickly leave! They never arrive at that page. But I won’t know its happening.

In the meantime, Google will exclude that page from their searches – and I will receive less visits, enquiries and subscribers. That’s been happening – but my consistent blogging has helped cushion the effects a little bit.

See how complicated this whole issue is – and it’s devastating effect on my ability to earn more income?

Additional Insights Into The Negative Impact Of This Hacker Attack

It’s with this Google confirmation that I’m now able to put 2 and 2 together, to make sense of the strange experiences I’ve been having.

Burt Dubin has – as usual – kindly written in, on learning of this new development. My thanks to him – and my friends/family – for all the moral support, as I tackle these different efforts to pull me down (and they are MANY I tell you – without exaggeration).

There’s a consistent odd/tell tale trend I’ve noticed in these attacks. And those I’ve pointed it out to agree with me, that it is a good sign that these attacks are being done (or sponsored) by people who know me, and who want to discredit me. They are not the usual random attacks.

For instance, specific pages and documents on my website (e.g. my PDF resume, learning event PDF flyers and other pages specifically used to showcase my products and services for sale) are selectively attacked – not the entire website!

They also attacked my popular articles (which I still have on HTML pages) that attract a lot of readers. Those pages used to come up in Google, now they don’t.

The obvious purpose is to prevent me from gaining enough credibility to convert more visitors into buyers (like I did with the Canadian Farm Project Manager priest – to their surprise I’m sure).

It’s even affected my efforts to gain marketing traction for my learning events and new products here in Benin Republic. I’ve had so many in-person meetings that started out looking promising.

Then we would part by exchanging cards, and the prospects would promise to visit my website as agreed, in readiness for a follow up meeting.

As you can imagine, a visit to the website that results in a virus warning or a scam offer will NOT inspire any confidence in a prospect to pursue furthr relations with the owner!

Now consider the REAL possibility that ALL those I’ve been sending my Guest Posts, English-French Guide CDROMs and Seminar proposals to have been having that experience?!!

Our Websites Need To Be Protected – And We Will Often Need All The Help We Can Get

I’m not giving details of the solution I’ve settled on.

But the trends I’ve noticed in these attacks strongly suggest implementing it will make a lasting world of difference. Where I’ve been using this planned solution, I’ve NEVER had this problem, so I intend to simply extend it to the rest of the website.

Sadly, all this has prevented me from building on my success from a few months back.

It took a lot of work to get that far. I’d continued work to build on it. But I found it so strange that everything just came to an almost complete halt.

Google has now helped show why this happened, with this email advice they sent me. I’m now working hard to clean up the entire website to (as they correctly put it) protect my visitors/users.

Most of what I’m trying to achieve in my business (online and off the web) depends on how my website presents me.

That’s where I put up most of my marketing material to support even my offline efforts. Today, people readily Google you, and check your website out to make up their minds.

Mine has helped me earn decent income (and achieve great marketing mileage/exposure) while spending VERY little – even from Nigerians who find it hard to trust themselves talk less of others.

They’ve sent me money from different parts of the country. I have CEOs in Lagos, Niger, Kano, Ibadan and other places who own businesses (e.g. farms, and other companies) that have bought my handbook and subscribe to my newsletter, and are now friends but we’ve never met!

Someone I’d never met before even sent N35,000 (approx. $230 USD) into my bank account, two full weeks before travelling from over 8 hours away in Akwa Ibom, to meet me in Lagos. It was on a Saturday, and I spent about 4 hours putting him through practical Feed Formulation at a feed mill in Oko Oba, late last year.

Why Would A Stranger Send Me Payment 2 weeks Ahead For An In-Person Training? It Was Simply Based On What He Read On My Website.

And That’s How Powerful Your Writing Can Be!

If you own a website, you probably depend on it to achieve similar goals.

That’s why when your website is not in a good state of health, your chances of making useful progress are limited.

So, this kind of attack is something we all need to protect ourselves against. And we will often need all the help we can get to do so successfully.

When focussing on the serious business of attracting clients for your services, it can be annoying to discover “hidden”
attacks like these diluting one’s efforts. This has been an on-going battle for close to 2 years now.

Everytime I
clean it out, they come right back. I’m determined to make this
the last.

I’m grateful for the support provided by Google via their Webmaster tools email alert, and for my web host (Hostgator)’s usual amazing support.

PS: Oh, by the way, I know the “bad guys” are on my newsletter mailing list, and also possibly tune in via RSS etc. So they’re always lurking, with malicious intent.

Well, Here Are Some FINAL WORDS for Those Haters to Chew On

A proverb in my language (Yoruba) says:

“Ota o le pa kadara mi da. Won kan le fa owo ago pada si ehin ni”

Literal translation: Enemies/haters/evil-doers cannot change my destiny. They can only pull the hands of the clock backwards”.

Contextual translation: “People who try to hurt/stop you can never succeed unless you let them. The best they can do is to slow you down. Eventually, if you don’t stop, YOU will wear THEM down.”

And of course, I hope you know that your “destiny” is what you make of it?

Yes it is!

Like Williams Jennings Bryan said

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, but of choice. Not something to wish for, but to attain.”

Sigh. If these guys knew where I draw my inspiration from, they would have quit long ago. But becasue they are so DAFT, they persist in wasting their time.

How do you stop a guy who simply does not understand how to give up?

Your best bet is: Shoot him…and make sure you don’t miss!

The problem you will have is MY creator will not let ANYONE succeed in doing that to me.

Evil can never triumph over GOOD. Falsehood can never defeat TRUTH. Period.

So “haters”, if you can find better things to do with your time, I’d really advise you do SO NOW. You will NOT win this war. I’m in this to the end – and by then I’ll be the last one standing. Believe it.

Did you know you can now literally live without breathing?

Who would have thought it possible? That an injection of a man made particle into your bloodstream can keep you alive, and well – even when you’re not breathing – for up to 30 LONG minutes!

Many struggle to believe Napoleon Hill’s famous “Whatever the human mind can conceive it can achieve” assertion.

Well, this scientific breakthrough(clik to read) mentioned in an August 2012 article proves it!

This issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter highlights valuable lessons we can learn from scientists.

Scientists Are Masters at Making Impossible Things Our Everyday Realities

Read this amazing report, and marvel: Scientists at Boston University have invented an oxygen particle that if injected in the blood, allows you to stay alive without breathing.

I’ve long held the opinion that scientists are some of the most emotionally intelligent people on the planet.

Daniel Goleman explained in his book on “Emotional Intelligence (EI)” that to be emotionally intelligent, you must learn to control and use your emotions to achieve improvements in performance and learning.

Among other examples, he mentioned “Ability to persevere in spite of adversity or frustration i.e. things going wrong” as an important dimension of EI.

They Use Their Setbacks & Mistakes as Stepping Stones to Success

Conducting experiments in remote laboratories, and most times not finding what you want, can be a tough psychological challenge to handle. Yet scientists dedicate decades of their lives to doing just that.

Edison reportedly failed with over 9,000 experiments, before discovering the tungsten filament that made light bulbs possible.

Then he famously proclaimed, based on his experience: Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

From the way they work, his fellow scientists apparently agree. Some do it because they’ve lost a loved one to an ailment with no cure, and dedicated their lives to finding one. For others it’s just about creating a legacy, and/or exploring new frontiers, to help mankind take quantum leaps.

For instance, Dr. John Kheir, who reportedly initiated the research work that led to this breakthrough, got the inspiration after losing a patient.  An unexpected filling of her lungs with blood occurred during surgery. They were unable to drain it out, and get oxygen to her brain before fatal damage was done.

But today, those same doctors have put that bad experience to good use (Isn’t that what Zig Ziglar kept telling us to do? Why do we keep forgetting…or refusing to believe ?).

Millions of lives can now be saved – ensuring that the loss of that young girl’s life was not in vain. The benefits are obvious. And not just in medicine. Military personnel who have to work underwater can fall back on it, if their breathing gear fails. Private sector applications will undoubtedly evolve over time.

Scientists Perform Miracles Because They Refuse to Give Up On Us: But We Take Them for Granted!

Most people would rather not be stuck in a lab, wearing unfashionable white coats, and looking into microscopes day and night.

Yet we expect scientists to do just that. We wait on them to discover the next miracle cure. Ironically, they are just as human as we are. But they don’t let themselves get frustrated by setbacks. If they did, there would be no new cures or medical breakthroughs for us to celebrate or look forward to!

Most of these guys simply do not know how to quit.

A quote I recently read (tweeted by @KarenKeller, and re tweeted by Lia Han @bemycareercoach) says:

Life has two rules: (1). Never Quit. (2). Always Remember rule No. 1.

I’m convinced many successful scientists strictly abide by the above mentioned rules.

How to Emulate Scientists: When Something Gets In Your Way, Simply Change Gears & Accelerate!

I actually think we, as experts-who-speak, can harvest many useful insights, for use in delivering talks (and in serving clients as experts), by studying scientists more closely.

Here’s how…

What do you do when you drive up to a muddy stretch of road that you know your car could get stuck in? You’re likely to change gears, and then step on the accelerator pedal to gain additional traction.

Well, why not do the same thing in your life?

Whenever you get to the inevitable rough and hilly terrains in life, change gears and step on it!

Yes, behave the way you do when driving. But this time it will be your life, not your car.

You’ll leave that challenge far behind you in no time.

Jim Rohn wrote:

“Smile at adversity and act quickly to eliminate it”.

He was right.

Final Words:  One More Reason Why You Need to Emulate Scientists As An Expert-Who-Speaks

This business of life is not just about you.

There is a world out there that needs you to make the most of yourself. Every time you don’t, one or more people will be denied the help they require.  You have an obligation to not let that happen.

The scientists understand this. And that’s why even after they achieve a breakthrough, they celebrate and then get back to work. They know more people who need help, depend on them to do so!

You, as an expert-who-speaks, must realize you have a similar role to play in the lives of your target audience. The only difference is simply that while scientists develop life-giving/improving solutions, you deliver life-changing/enhancing messages.

Ultimately both target audience groups live richer lives when we do our work right.

You may be successful already, but that does not mean your work is done.

I therefore urge you to go back and think up the next new idea or message to turn the lives of your target audiences around for the better.  You can get valuable guidance and help here.

This final Jim Rohn quote provides a fitting end to this piece:

“Always be eager to learn, no matter how successful you might already be. In the Millionaires’s Club, we sometimes invite a billionaire to come talk to us. He says, ‘You’re doing okay, but come on. How about if you really poured it on!'”

All three will get you to your desired destination of “speaking success-ville” – so long as you meet the requirements/play your part well (your fare, abide by the set guidelines etc). During the “flight”, the seat you have will determine how much personal service attention and preference the provider will accord you. It’s that simple :-)

So, make your choice:1. Top Shelf [Click here] | 2. Mid Range [Click here] | 3. Budget Delight [Click here]

FYI: Orchestrated Sabotage Campaign Against This Website

The email (in the screenshot below) is a 419 – that is scam – message being circulated disguised as if it’s from my website email (tayo at spontaneousdevelopment.com).

Believe it or not, this one came right into my inbox yesternight – got me wondering why I would send myself an email, till I read the contents…

This is the 1st bit of proof I’m getting to confirm the suspicions I’ve had that my work online is being sabotaged.

2 days ago, I discovered one of the websites I’ve earned income from had deleted my account without notice*

*******!

NB: Just this evening, I got a response from the above mentioned website to my enquiry saying my account had been reactivated. (See screenshot below). So that’s ONE less to worry about. But the big matter of the scam emails above remains…

*******

Earlier LinkedIn.com locked my account accusing me of “suspicious activity”.

This has been a serious running battle for me for a while.

A group of people are orchestrating these attacks to stop the obvious growth of my website traffic, and my profile.

These are mostly sponsored attacks. And it’s difficult to trace them

See (below) the links to articles I’ve had to publish on my website each time I’ve been punished for what I did not do as above.

Below the links is a message I included in an application I just submitted to a network. It gives details.

2. http://spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets/how-to-unmask-defeat-blood-sucking-vampires/

One thing is certain. They can never stop me.

==BELOW: The message I submitted to an online forum in which I had to warn the owners about the above situation==

I need to say this.

I’m having a running battle getting some bad guys off my back with regard to my website and blog. It’s costing me access to income earning and reputation building networks.

If you accept me into this forum PLEASE know that I do NOT do any kind of spamming, scamming or illegal stuff online.

LinkedIn.com and now constant-content.com (where I used to earn income as a writer) have recently locked me out of their websites.

I still do not know why – but LinkedIn replied to say they noticed “suspicious activity” in my account.

Just this evening I got a fake lottery email I apparently sent to myself from my domain based email (tayo at spontaneousdevelopment.com)!

Then it began to make sense!!

Basically they use my emaill address in place of the name for the sender.

Except for Internet savvy recipients, who think to check the email BEHIND the sender name (which they used my email to replace) most people will conclude the scam message came from my email, click to label it spam – and my website gets whacked by Google and co.

The problem is I don’t know how to stop them from sending those messages out to others – who will naturally think it’s me.

I’m saying all this here UPFRONT to help you decide if you’re comfortable having me on. There are orchestrated attempts being made to destroy my work online.

This is not the first time. I remain focussed on my goals.

And it’s even one of the reasons I relocated from Nigeria to Benin Republic.

Each time this problem has cost me tangibly (E.g. linkedIn and constant-content) I’ve written a blog post about it.

It’s the only form of defense I can think of. If after reading ALL this you’re OK with having me around, I’ll be glad to be a useful contributor to your forum – as (name of ebook) is one reason why I’m still alive and kicking despite the concerted efforts of people who want to pull me down.

Sorry about the epistle.
